after seeing ice marceline in winter king's kingdom i had a terrible thought

WK said that simon could just make an ice betty after the betty he had was confirmed dead (implying he's done something similar)

and in the episode 'Simon and Marcy' marceline got really sick and simon had to get her chicken soup to feel better

and in WK's universe she's an ice version (still as a child) AND melts once WK is destroyed

my headcanon is that in WK's universe he was unable to keep marceline alive, possibly in a crucial moment like what was shown in 'Simon and Marcy' and in his grief in being unable to keep a CHILD alive (one of the core parts of simons whole dad thing he has) he made a duplicate once he reverted the crown's curse onto PB

living among ghosts of people you once loved can really drive you nuts. maybe that's why an ice-betty is nowhere to be found

I hate how hotd never allowed Alicent to feel hate or resentment for Rhaenyra and viserys

Rhaenyra was allowed to resent and ignore Alicent for marrying her father, Rhaenyra was allowed to hate on toddler Aegon. Rhaenyra was allowed to hate on the fact that she has to marry in the future

Hotd never allowed Alicent to resent Rhaenyra even after the Driftmark incident

Hotd never allowed Alicent to resent Viserys for raping her, for neglecting her & her children, for not supporting Amond. They infact had her mourn for him and steal the throne over a misunderstanding.

Hotd never explored what Alicent wanted in a marriage, hotd never explicitly acknowledged all the abuse she suffered from Viserys.

IT'S SO TRANSPARENT HOW THEY NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED VISERYS' ABUSE OF ALICENT. HIS ABUSIVE & DISMISSIVE BEHAVIOUR WAS NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED BY ANY CHARACTER NOT EVEN BY ALICENT HERSELF

no cause you’re so right for naming Kirakira in that potential canon post, I could name every character in that show and make arguments for each one, villain and cure alike. the characters were too ambitious for the show! like, don’t just reinforce that Akira cares a shitton about people, tell us why! Ichika feels that she has to put a smile on her face no matter what, show us more! Noir and Lumière are probably meant to be an allegory for abusive relationships, please elaborate!

THANK YOUUUUU i'm so glad to hear others feel the same way, it makes me feel better knowing that it's not just me overthinking things. i am actually in the process of writing a mini essay/reflection on the characters (will not be published until i finish the series) and it's funny that you mention ichika feeling like she has to smile no matter what because i actually bring it up in the analysis. i think they definitely had the foundations for a good arc where ichika learns that it's okay to cry sometimes and i'm so mad that they just ignored it and went with "ichika learns she has to put precure duties before her personal wants and needs" when that conflict had literally never come up before. with regard to akira i really think she has potential and i love her caring nature but they never actually Do Anything with it and it's frustrating. while i haven't actually gotten to the noir&lumiere backstory episode yet i do know what happens courtesy of being in this fandom for 6 years and yeah. i definitely think they could have done way more with it

Extra Lore Crumbs:

The Apprentice did have a universe of her own at one point, until a cosmic entity set its eyes on it. The Apprentice was born after that point, chosen as its vessel, but she grew too unstable, was consumed by the void, and destroyed her own world in the madness. She didn’t mean to, of course, but that’s what happens when you try to make a kid your vessel, stupid 🙄.

The Blank is what’s left of her universe, an endless night sky that reflected on a water-like floor, (Ayo, Kingdom Hearts, that you?) where every star is a universe, far away and out of even her reach. All except one.

In the Blank she found an entrance to the Gray where The Reader was, busy reading timelines and talking to The Writers.

She just kinda popped up behind him and went “yo, what ya lookin at?”

The rest is history.

I find it facinating that Big Mama is heavily implied to be a Japanese spider yokai, specifically the Jorōgumo (絡新婦). It might even be confirmed. But how exactly does being a Jorōgumo influence the behaviours and powers she is revealed to have in the show?

PART A: "Snuggle Muffin Beefcake"

In season 2, episode 1 - Many Unhappy Returns, we get confirmation on something that has been implied since the ending shot of episode 22b of season 1. That being Big Mama and Splinter had some form of a relationship prior to the events of the show.

The story of Big Mama meeting Lou Jitsu is super similar to the folktales of the Jorōgumo.

Lou Jitsu meets Big Mama while she acts as his truck driver during the filming of one of his movies and begins dating her sometime during or after production. It isn't confirmed how long they dated but Lou ends up proposing to her on their last date. Big Mama pulls away the curtain and reveals her true form, kidnapping him and forcing him to be a champion in the Battle Nexus.

It could be said that for a short duration of the beginning of Lous stay in the Nexus the couple still tried putting together a weak charade of their romance (despite him proposing you dont see an engagement ring in the picture below). Lou eventually begins refusing to continue the charade and to fight in the Nexus, angering her and promptly resulting in him being locked in a dark cell deep in the property. He then eventually escapes.

Now that you've heard the in show background for Big Mama, heres a common folktale featuring the Jorōgumo:

The legend tells of a man who rested beside the waterfall basin of Jōren Falls when the jorōgumo tried to drag him into the waterfall by throwing webs around his leg. The man transferred the webbing around a tree stump, which was dragged into the falls instead of him.

After that, villagers dared not venture close to the falls anymore. Then one day, a visiting woodcutter tried to cut a tree and mistakenly dropped his favorite axe into the basin. As he tried to get his axe back, a beautiful woman appeared and returned it to him. "You must never tell anyone what you saw here", she said. Initially he kept the secret, but as days went by, he finally told the whole story whike drunk at a banquet. Feeling unburdened and at peace, he went to sleep, but he never woke again.

There are two alterate endings featuring the woodcutter in this story.

1 > the woodcutter was pulled outside by an invisible string and his corpse was found floating the next day at the Jōren Falls.

2 > the woodcutter fell in love with the woman from the waterfall. He visits her every day, but grows physically weaker each time. The oshō of a nearby temple suspected that something was off about the whole thing and accompanied him to chant a sutra. When a thread reached out to the woodcutter, the oshō let out a thunderous yell, and the thread disappeared. Now knowing that the woman is a jorōgumo yokai, the woodcutter still persisted and tried to gain permission for marriage from the local tengu yokai. When the tengu denied him the woodcutter ran towards the waterfall, where he was entangled by webs and disappeared into the water

Reading these two stories side by side there are some similarities we can pull away from them:

Like the Jorōgumo of the waterfall in one of the alternate versions, Lou Jitsu (the woodcutter) falls for Big Mama (the woman) and begins visiting her regularly. When her true nature is revealed Lou Jitsu (woodcutter) persists in his romantic feelings for the yokai and remains captured by the Jorōgumo for some time (its implied he died but we dont really know???).

While Big Mama never gave Lou Jitsu the chance to tell anyone about her true nature, it can be safe to assume if he escaped before getting kidnapped, he would've told somebody eventually and she would either be caught or attempt to cover it up however she could

PART B: Queen Eight-Legs

Another aspect of the Jorōgumo is their natural talent in manipulation, shapeshifting and creating organic webbing, communicate with spiders (specifically tiny fire breathing spiders). They also are noted to live in darker places like caves or abandoned houses.

Big Mama is seen to be able to do most of the things listed and has some other abilities as well. Some of the powers Big Mama has revealed in the show are:

Deception intuition (very skilled at manipulation)

Shapeshifting (December 2020, executive producer Andy Suriano confirmed that her "cloaking brooch" is just jewelry and is for show)

Web generation + web spitting (can generate web from her palms, spinnerets and even her mouth to catch enemies)

Wallcrawling (self explanitory)

Agility (she is seen to easily dodge Draxums attacks when they fought)

Durability (she can take immense levels of damage and uses her larger set of arms as shields)

Strength (despite her small stature in human form, she tossed Bullhop and immediatly pulled him to his feet at one point during their dance sequence)

We never see her interact with a spider in the show or display any fire related abilities as far as I can remember, so I'm putting that on a maybe for her abilities.

On the note of living in caves or other abandoned places, as far as we can tell she lives in the hotel. The Grand Nexus Hotel is far from abandoned but we do see many of the darker rooms she commonly lives in covered with her webs.

Due to the fact that the yokai live in dark spaces they may have night vision, but don't quote me on that.

Just keep in mind that many things about the Jorōgumo I dont really know because there are very few folktales that I could find on the internet. The ones I quoted just seem to be the most generally accepted ones and seem to be what Big Mama is majorly based on. As far as I can tell there could be more abilities Big Mama has, but I don't see many more abilities she could have based on the source material of the folklore and the show itself.

I could've missed something!

I'm a mixed American that wasn't raised with many folktales due to never really being surrounded by one particular culture. Despite the rich heritage, my family is more knowledgeable in modern pop culture more than anything else. I am not someone to quote officially for any of this stuff and you should do your own research if you're interested in the topic of yokai in Rise of the TMNT. I am just a nerd on the internet.
