What's the "whippiest" sword you can think of? Does thinness of blade always translate to it being "whippier" or are there other factors? Also I've been following your blog for a while now and I'm always happy to see your posts!

Thinness frequently contributes to whippiness, although blade geometry is also a factor, as is the heat treat (I’m not super confident in my metallurgical knowledge, so I’d happily defer to someone else on that!). I can’t think of any historical swords that were meant to be as flexible as the ones in the Witcher trailer (the origin of the discussion of flexible “whippy” blades), but some ended up that way due to design, tradition, resources, and the knowledge and experience of the maker. 

The whippiest sword I’ve owned is a late 19th century takouba from Cameroon that has a broad and very thin blade. It was sharpened and would probably cut light targets fairly well, but it is extremely flexible and wouldn’t be able to thrust at all, and would flex excessively if it came into contact with another blade. I’ve owned other takouba that have much stiffer and thicker blades. 

Some spadroon blades are too flexible and a bit whippy. That is true of my British Pattern 1796 Infantry Officer’s Sword. Some P1796s have better blades than my example–better manufacture, better blade geometry, etc.

I can’t think of a scenario in which an overly flexible blade would be desirable for combat. I’d love to have input from other sword-related blogs! @armthearmour @we-are-knight @sinistresabreur @short-swords @historicalfightingguide @swordlesbianism @petermorwood and others!

I'd like for lady space marines to happen canonically (and available lady guardsman) but I'd like for it to be something that is changed in the lore rather than retconned? Like I know retcons happen all the time in WH40k but it'd be cool if there was a reason that it was okay in the canon now? I think maybe we've got an opportunity rn with the primaris marines but what would be your best suggestion for adding lady marines to the story?

This seems to be a pretty common sentiment- people aren’t averse to the idea (or even excited about it) but also want to avoid a retcon. And I can sympathize, but ultimately what made me come down on the side of pro-retcon is that it would prioritize real people (fans who want lady space marines, many of whom are women themselves) over the lore which, frankly, hasn’t exactly been a bedrock of unchanging stability in any other capacity. 

That said, I can see why it would be somewhat awkward from GW’s perspective now that they’ve released so many Horus Heresy novels, particularly, with nothing but men as far as the eye can see. “Yes, the, uh, camera was always just off of the women space marines… pan left and there’s one! Anyhow..” isn’t the most elegant solution.

If they wanted to include it moving forward, I feel like yeah, they kinda missed a golden opportunity when they released the Primaris marines to say “Oh, and also, they can make women into space marines now through the Primaris process; Cawl figured that one out easily enough while he was at it.” They could always have Guilliman be disgusted at the complete logistical waste of ignoring roughly half the best candidates for transhuman uberwarriors and order Cawl to fix it, I guess- that would somewhat suit the lore depicting the Imperium of m41 as desperately head-up-ass that it takes their biggest strategic/logistical genius to go “Uh… guys? I know it’s called the Imperium of Man but uh….” but it would be the sort of ‘so pitiful and/or bleak that it’s obvious parody’ that was early 40k.

EDIT: as for women in the Astra Militarum, the lore already supports their presence (as well as some of the artwork- particularly the newer artwork, woo!) and I’d absolutely love for GW to toss a couple-five women heads on each guard sprue. Or, as others have suggested, if they want to make money hand-over-fist, release a separate ‘upgrade’ pack that’s nothing but human lady heads so you can kit out your IG, Scions, or even (gasp!) space marines with Official GW(TM) Parts instead of having to turn to third-party sculptors.
