Week 11 Scrapbook - What Up When It Ain't in the US?
America is not particularly known for their progressivism when it comes to our cinema and the stories told (more accurately sold). There is this sense of commercialism that historically has excluded the stories of minority groups, which has only recently been remedied for select groups but certainly not all. The tales of the LGBTQIA+ community are important to share in both fictional and nonfictional depictions, but are consistently downplayed to American audiences. However, when it isn’t in the United States -- it is quite different.
Beautiful Thing (1996)
Tumblr media
This is the LGBT film I stumbled upon years ago due to its peculiar soundtrack compromised almost entirely of Cass Elliot songs. The narrative centers around the love story of Stu and Jamie (pictured above) in England. There’s sprinkles of references that reward viewers that notice small details, as there is a scene where Jamie (on the left) wears a Keith Haring shirt. I rarely get interested in love stories, but it really took me in and I wanted everything to work out. It tends to be a trend for gay cinema to reel you in and then betray your heartstrings, but the ending for this film is quite happy.
Considering the film was released in 1996, it is quite progressive and holds up fairly well. There is a powerful scene where one of the boys cries to their mother when she confronts him about being gay. The two are at each other’s necks for the vast majority of the film, but it is turned around by this intimate scene between the two of them as they are the only people in each other’s lives up until this point. If this was a film in America, the boys would not be up front and center but instead be the subplot given marginal screen time to pad out the film. All in all, it’s a beautiful thing (pun intended).
More than anything, Harvey allows the film’s gay protagonists to eventually live fully and visibly as themselves. Audiences see this in the most literal sense at the end of the film, when Jamie and Ste slow-dance in the middle of their estate to Mama Cass’s 1968 chart-topper “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” Departing from the tired and tiring depictions of gay people as outcasts, seedy sexaholics, and victims, Beautiful Thing offers complicated characters moored in a world in which any sort of gay nuance or texture is often redacted. On its release two decades ago, Beautiful Thing achieved a level of artistic complexity that created not only a more interesting, but also a more relevant expression of queerness. It still does this today.

My Beautiful Laundrette (1985)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another British feel-good gay film. This one features Pakistani relations within the world of Margaret Thatcher’s England to a comical degree. There’s something really special about seeing a queer relationship play out on cinema, but when there’s effort to take it a step further and make it a biracial relationship -- that’s when I’m truly suckered in for good. The narrative focuses on the two characters, which is interesting to say the least considering this is from 1985. Gay representation probably wasn’t at the top of the priorities in the minds of many American filmmakers. Released in the same year as other films such as Back to the Future, Rocky IV and A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge.

Pakistani immigrant and friend go into business together. Offbeat and appealing.
- Vincent Canby (The New York Times review)
Much like this week’s reading, the problem of Cuban society ignoring, denying and alienating homosexuals by keeping them in a closet is not limited to Cuba itself. This was the first review I found for this film, and while it was from 1986, it is a textbook example of gay erasure in my view. There is a Vine from years ago that has resurfaced in recent years as a way to mock historians for their infamous gay erasure. The two are much more than “friends,” but that is a surprise awaiting those who give it a chance.
Half the movie elapses before the two kiss, but it’s no big deal when they do; My Beautiful Laundrette treats it as perfectly ordinary, which was all but unprecedented in 1985. Any didacticism is reserved for speeches about Pakistani Brits embracing the capitalist mores of their adopted country, with the refurbished laundrette serving as a grand thematic symbol. And even that material is fairly lighthearted, as heavy-handedness goes. No matter how clumsy the movie gets, it’s always enjoyable just to spend time with these proud hustlers, who stubbornly refuse to lie down and be marginalized.
- Mike D’Angelo (AV Club review)
Skam (Norwegian television series)
This is a Norwegian television series, and I am writing specifically about the romance between. What I find refreshing about this show is that it focuses on a character coming to terms with their sexuality, and they have a lot of internalized homophobia -- which leads to one of my favorite scenes/conversations of all time (pictured directly below).
