‘Cruisin’ For a Bruisin’ ‘50s Juke AU

Another one! Had this sitting in a chat with @thedeathdeelers (since she loves this AU so much 😊). Read the other two installments of Soc!Julie and Greaser!Luke here and here! Credit to @lydias--stiles for the rival gang name.

Luke bursts through the school doors, pushing himself to the limit as he rockets through the streets on foot.

He's late. He's so, so late and that means he's dead.

Lessa brought the hammer down after his latest stunt and gave him detention.

On Race Day against the Ghoulies no less.

If he doesn't show, then it’s bye-bye to their turf. Their well-earned block.

The Phantoms may be ruffians- a menace to good ol' fashion American values- but the Ghoulies would straight up wreak havoc on this side of town if given the chance.

They can't let that happen.

In this all-stakes race, he was set to drive the 'Curve, the car he and the boys spent all month fine-tuning. He's the best driver out of all them, so it's his job to protect his crew.

But he failed everybody.

Showing up late is better than not showing up at all. Still on grounds of disqualification, but at least he'll face Dante's dogs like a man.

He makes it to the bridge and finds his friends standing off to the side, watching something far out in the distance. The Ghoulies on the other.

"Boys," he pants, causing everyone to turn to him, wide-eyed, "The warden kept me in. Guarded like it's the state penn. Could you believe it?"

The boys don't say anything, still openly staring at him like he's some anomaly.

Reggie points a shaky finger.

"Y-You're here." he sputters.

Luke nods, "Uh yeah? Late. I know. I gotta settle shit with Dante now and-"

"No, Luke," Alex keeps glancing back at the horizon, panicked, "You're here?!"

"And if you're here..." Bobby leaps, gripping his hair, "Then who's driving the 'Curve?!"

"What?!" Luke explodes.

A piercing vroom riccochets throughout the abandoned bridge. Luke and the Phantoms rush forward, craning their heads just as two vehicles whizz by.

Someone is, in fact, driving the 'Curve. Racing Dante like planned.

And they're winning.

There's no telling who's in there. They're wearing Luke's helmet. How did they get a hold of his helmet? Luke swears he left it with Julie, for safe keeping, and to make sure she comes to the race and-

"Where's Julie?" Luke asks, even though it would be easy picking out the one poodle skirt in the hodgepodge of leather and denim.

Then it dawns on him just as the 'Curve pulls in, cutting off the Ghoulie's Zipline ahead of crossing the finish line.

Their side erupts in cheers. To the Phantoms, it doesn't matter who's under there, all that matters is that they won!

Luke pushes to the front. The turf war be damned. The driver hops out of the 'Curve, just as Dante furiously storms out of his own vehicle. Soon, both sides realize that Luke hadn't been the one driving.

The real Luke unclips the helmet and tears it off the driver's head, unleashing the bountiful curls.

"What the hell were you thinking?!" Luke takes Julie by the arm, shielding her from the likes of the Ghoulies.

Julie vibrates in his hold, beaming at him with an electric smile, breathless, "Did you see that? I won!"

"Yeah! How does it feel to get beaten by a doll?" Reggie jeers at Dante, who's fuming. The rest of the Phantoms join in, except for Luke.

"You could have- geez, Julie you could have spun out there!"

"No, I eased on the turns and punched it on the release. I'm not a total square."

Luke knows that Julie knows how to drive. Hell, she's taught him a few tricks she learned from her mom. But now is not the time to show it off.

Not when her actions have big consequences.

"Julie. Do you have any idea what you just did?" Luke shares a look with the boys, once the celebratory mood wavered. They nod, confirming what he's thinking- what they're all thinking, "You drove. For the Phantoms."

"And kept the block!” Julie rejoices, “Los Feliz is still Phantom territory!”

Luke remains stoic, “You don’t understand...”

"If people had doubts where your loyalty lies, they know now" Alex joins in.

It takes Julie a total of five seconds to realize what they’re talking about.

Her face drops. She looks to each of the boys, her eyes begging for them to tell her otherwise, "No.”

Luke grimaces, "You're a Phantom now, babe."

Her bronze complexion pales at the bombshell, "W-Wait, no. I'm not- I only did it because you would have had to forfeit-"

"The rules are a person from each gang races," Willie, a Ghoulie, declares, "And if you want the win to be binding... that girl better be a Phantom."

Julie spins around, everyone's stares piercing and probing, and she buries herself into Luke, "Please tell me it's not true."

Luke sighs, wishing that this didn't have to happen, "People saw you driving for us. They already think you're one of us. Sorry. Rules are rules."

"But I can't be in a gang!" Julie whispers, fearful, "My dad's gonna kill me."

“So you recruiting Soc’s now?” Dante darts forward, getting wound up, “That can’t count-!”

Willie grabs the guy’s collar, stopping him, “Man, you know whose kid she is? She’s not all Soc,” The long-haired Ghoulie looks at Julie, “Right?”

“She doesn’t have to answer to you” Alex stands in front of her, the rest of the Phantoms follow, already shouting insults at the rival gang.

Sensing the beginning of a rumble, Luke ushers Julie into the car. He slides into the drivers' seat, peeling out just as the two gangs are beginning to fight.

The whole ride was silent and tense. At one point Julie had shed his jacket, staring at the Phantom decal on the back, thinking.

'Might as well keep it', Luke thinks to himself. It's her crest just as much as his now.

He doesn’t say it out loud.

They pull up in front of her house, and unlike the other times, there’s a car already in the driveway. Her dad is already home.

“What’s gonna happen now?” Julie whispers.

Luke’s hands hover over her, his brain running a mile a minute, “We'll figure this out. Come to some agreement with Trevor? Shit, he’s probably heard about the race by now. Maybe he could let you leave the gang if we asked-”

“What if he doesn’t?”

“Don’t say that.”

Julie faces him, “It does seem poetic in a way, doesn't it? Mom had been one of you back in the day before trading it all away for a cushy life in the nicer part of town. It all comes full circle, I guess.”

He couldn’t tell if she’s serious or ecstatic. Her statement only held an air of acceptance, nothing else.

“Julie, let’s think about this.”

“What do you think?”

What does he think? A part of Luke, a really honest part of him, wants to say that Julie's always meant to be a Phantom.

Maybe it's the part of him that wants them to go the distance.

Sure be easier to date another Phantom than a Soc...

But this kind of life? For someone like Julie? She was built tough. She could pull off being a Greaser.

He knows she’s capable of more.

“I think... your dad’s gonna kill me,” he settles, reminding her of the situation at hand.

Switching off the car, Luke pockets the keys and exits the car.

He’s not gonna leave Julie to the mercy of her father. Whether or not his presence would make things worse, it’s his fault Julie got into this mess, for getting her so involved with the Phantoms despite every warning.

Julie takes a deep breath and follows, slamming the side door shut behind her.

“Let’s get this over with. Face the music and all. ” She grabs Luke by the hand and, together, they walk to her front door. “’Now or never’, right?”

Luke catches the slight smile on her face while she recited the Phantom mantra.

“Yeah,” He gives her hand a squeeze, as she opens the door, “Now or never...”

Moodboard and summary for a hypothetical college au I may never write for @thedeathdeelers who said she was in the mood for pining juke in college.

Julie's main memories of high school are losing her mom, developing crippling, if luckily temporary, stage fright and a messy break up with her boyfriend Nick. That last one being recent enough to both heighten her gratitude that it was over and leave her cringing when she thought about how long it had taken her to come to that decision. So saying she was looking to college to be a fresh start was an understatement. She was determined to ace her classes, flawlessly integrate into campus life and take the town by storm with her newly formed band with her friends Flynn and Kayla. Then she meets Luke Patterson. At first he's just the guy whose band keeps showing up at all the same auditions for gigs as hers, and annoyingly enough is good enough to book them half the time. Then he's the musician she admires before finally becoming the friend she can't live without. The only problem? She's finding it incredibly difficult to ace her classes, or fit in on campus, or become a rock star when she is hopelessly in love with her "friend" Luke. Between late night almost dates at the 24 hour diner, misunderstandings that keep seeming to crop up and a missing mixtape that may or may not effectively confess her feelings...Julie's definitely on the edge of something big. She can only hope it's greatness and not complete disaster.

I love that when Luke finally manages to poof onto the Orpheum stage, the first firework explodes on the background. The bubbles of light get brighter when Alex gets there, they multiply by a hundred when Reggie arrives, and when they are all there, creating music and love together? The fireworks dance.
