My Thoughts on “The Darkest Minds” Movie...So Far

*sigh* Here we go, guys.

First, let me say that ever since the movie was announced I have tried my darndest to be positive and uplifting. We heard the news that Jennifer Yuh Nelson, one of the minds behind 2 out of 3 of the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise, as well as Dan Cohen, Shawn Levy, and Dan Levine—all producers behind the wildly popular and successful Netflix series, “Stranger Things”—would all be playing a key role behind the making of this newest book to movie adaptation. 

Now anyone who follows me knows that I am OBSESSED with “Stranger Things”. The music, the plot, the cast. It is visually pleasing. I also love the “Kung Fu Panda” movies. The first one came out 10 years ago, when I was just 9 years old and every movie seemed to just get better and better. They were funny, heartwarming, and the MUSIC. Jesus, the music was so, so beautiful. 

So it goes without saying that I was actually pretty happy with who was going to be in charge of this movie. I trusted them, as they had done great work in the past. 

Then we got the cast. Amandla Stenberg (you may know her as Rue from “The Hunger Games” or Maddy in “Everything, Everything”) will be playing Ruby. She’s not who I envisioned, but Stenberg is not new to playing characters in book to movie adaptations, so I wasn’t too upset. Gwendoline Christie( Brienne of Tarth from “Game of Thrones” or Captain Phasma from “Stars Wars”) was EXACTLY who I imagined to play Lady Jane, as was Mandy Moore (Jaime from “A Walk to Remember”, Rapunzel from “Tangled”, and Lana from “The Princess Diaries”)  for Cate. Miya Cech, an up and coming actress will be playing Zu. I didn’t have anyone in particular for Zu, but I do believe Miya is adorable and will be able to play both the innocent and sassiness of Zu. Skylan Brooks, whose work I am not too familiar with, is playing Charles “Chubs” Meriwether. He is not at all how I imagined Chubs to look, besides him being black. In my head, Chubs looked completely different. Still, this was not the worst of the casting to me. Harris Dickinson will be playing the loyal, sweet southern boy Liam Stewart—the love interest of Ruby’s in the book. Now, I know I cannot possibly be the only person who envisioned Lucas Till as Liam. If you’re not aware of who Lucas Till is, he is known for playing Travis in “The Hannah Montana Movie”. It is this movie that made me instantly think of him when I read the description of Liam: tall, blond hair, blue eyes, charming smile, and slight southern accent. You LITERALLY  couldn’t get any better than Lucas Till. I don’t know, maybe Lucas Till refused to play in the movie, maybe they never asked him. But I know I will never get his image out of my head.

Now on to my...least favorite of the castings. Patrick Gibson. I have not watched anything of his. He’s 22, 5′10, Irish, red head. And he’s been cast as Clancy. When I first heard of this casting, I thought perhaps I had just completely skipped over all of the details of Clancy in the book. And then when I went back and reread...I wondered how in the hell they got someone that could not look any less like Clancy than if you had cast ME as the man. Clancy is said to be the most handsome guy Ruby had ever seen. He’s tall, with dark hair, pale skin, light eyes. A man with rare combinations; one of the things that draws Ruby to him. So you can imagine my surprise at him being cast. But still, I tried to hold out hope.

But it seems that it is all for nothing because those in charge of the movie are changing things. Things that don’t...really...make sense? 

1.) For one(and I’ll link the article below), they’ve renamed Black Betty, “Blue Betty”. Why? Will the van now  be blue? And if so, why in God’s name would a group of kids who are trying to be inconspicuous be driving a blue freaking car through the American countryside?

2.) In the book, Chubs is a blue, like Liam. They were both in the same camp and both use their powers in numerous helpful ways throughout the series. SO SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHYYYY THE HELL THEY CHANGED CHUBS TO A GREEN??? 

A green. A freaking green. They just felt the need to have nearly every color in the group, I suppose. But Chubs being a blue is a pretty crucial part in the series. I am interested and, frankly, quite scared to see how this changes the dynamic of the story and the relationship between the characters. 

What are your thoughts? I NEED someone to talk about this with.

The Big Ol’ Theory and Discussion Thread

I have a couple of different theories i have either posted myself or I have added to and I have a few I need answer along with some questions. So instead of running around to like 5 different threads, Im making one big one for myself. If anyone involved in these original theories and questions have any problem with this ‘master thread’ please let me know, I am willing to take this down if you arent ok with it.

Theories and Questions I need to Answer

This first and only discussion is an ask from @avara-avara . With her permission Id love to someday add a chat we had through messages about Nesta because it is and AMAZING theory she came up with, as well. But for now im finally answering her Ask. P.S. I am so fucking sorry this took so long.

To be honest... this confuses the shit out of me. I am not sure what I was on the other night that made me understand it. I am so confused right now. I dont know how to piece this together and ive had to read it 5 times to just get my bearings about it.

My biggest issue with this theory is the timeline. As far as I know, ACOTAR and ToG are on the same timeline. They are different universes yes, but their times are around the same as each other. So for Rhiannon to be a child or long descendent of Nessian would mean the timelines are off by at least a couple hundred years. I mean its still kinda possible since ACOTAR squad is already ancient and will probably live until they are a trillion but still... the timeline as far as I know, would be off. 

Another thing for if we went with this theory is that Cassian would have to be some kind of demon. Not necessarily Valg.. but defiantly a kind of demon. And to follow that would mean that my theory (the bone carver one above) is right (it probably isnt) and that Cass is not fully illyrian and nesta is a witch or at least not fully high fae. Which is also a tricky obstacle to get around. Because in... umm.... i wanna say QoS.. idk.. In a ToG book, we learn that Witchlings can only be born from an already existing Witch and that they are EXTREMELY rare. Unless we are talking about the creation of Crochan Witches, which in this case would surprisingly be an easier possibility because..... Ironteeth Witches are part Valg part Fae. But those are Ironteeth. We dont know if Crochans are the same. We do know that they are supposedly the less violent of the two races so we could assume that because of that they are of different demon origins. And like I said before this would mean Nesta is fully High Fae and Cass is half some kind of demon. Unless Nesta is a Witch and then Cassian is still some kind of demon that then creates a new stronger kind of witch. But I am not sure how that would work out. 

So... If any of that were to check out and for sake of easy-ness Im using Nessians Daughter = Rhiannon. Then at some point in Rhiannons early life she created a portal to the ToG universe and went through and probably never returned to the ACOTAR universe. This is completely possible because according to Rhiannons Wikia, she is powerful beyond belief. Seriously! Read it! Here! To back this up further, @liquifyme and I were talking one night and she thought that maybe the reason everyone in ACOTAR inner circle is so damn powerful is because they are all half breeds and that in ACOTAR Universe, Half breeds turn out more powerful. So it would make sense that 2 powerfull half breeds aka Nessian, pop out a half breed that is also extremely powerful. 

Theres A LOT of ifs and maybes in this even for a theory. so... 

I dont have a conclusion to this but I open to more discussion on it, @avara-avara . 

Id also love your input on this Candace. You’ll probably point something out I didnt even realize. @liquifyme

@sarah-bae-maas Has a FANTASTIC series called A Court of Hearts and Darkness (ACOHAD).  I’m a quivering mess waiting for each new chapter and all work stops when it hits tumblr!

@paperbacktrash writes tons of amazing fics and her blog is just fabulous, so check her stories out!

This focus grabbing blogger @thelittleloverofbooks Really said alot of good things about this movie and book with a eye catching review in a detailed paragraph or so. She writes with absolute positivity about this movie and book as she knows its in good hands and she even states she trusts the director of the movie. She goes on to explain her personal opinion about the director and the not so worst cast to give us a closer look into the world of the people who all put their time and everything into this movie.I have yet to watch and glance at the book cover as I’m not a reader but a writer. She also lets us know about the really great past work to ensure the movie is in good hands of Jennifer yu nelson as she directed the past and on going films Kung Fu panda and the Netflix original stranger things.please don’t come for me S.T. fans but i haven't watched it but if you have id definitely would recommend you to watch or read this movie. Loverofbooks does explain a lot of the characters and to give you a better understanding of their back-round but not really the directors besides her awesome past films. there isn't really any information about the settings,themes,protagonist,conflict etc. so I’m not really pulled into this movie besides the main character Ruth on the hunger games is the main character in this film,book. little lover of books didn't really giver her rating if she did i missed it but i can already tell shes more in love with the book. there wasn't much quotes from the movie or book and since i haven't read or watched it i was confused when she, talked about a character that has changed in the movie then in the book. i understand that if you have read the book this is a heads up but i didn't personally find this useful for me. But i just adore how much research shes done and the factual tone she gives and the organized structure and time put into this review great job thanks lover of books I’ve also added a couple links above that connects you to the movie more until next time.

There is a crossover fanfic being (?) written by @thelittleloverofbooks that I really, really hope keeps going…if it’s completed, then I missed it somehow and I’ll have to go digging around to finish it! (ACOTAR/TOG)

@bioticblackops writes an amazing TOG fanfic called Blind Hearts, definitely recommend! (TOG)

@buggitybooks wrote an AU called Across the Stars, a coffeeshop Feyrhys fanfic that I want to go on forever!  

This is just a small little sample!  I know I’ve missed some shout-outs to some of my other favorite fanfic authors, so I deeply apologize if I didn’t mention you here; it’s not intentional, just a product of 3 hours of sleep and getting over a three-week long flu.  (And maybe the glass of Amaretto and Bailey’s I’m currently enjoying, who knows?)
