A picture of my mother
I asked my grandmother how my mother looked when she was young
“She looked just like you,” she said as if she didn't think too hard about the question
But I refused to believe that such an angry and tired woman once looked like me
After rummaging in her room, she handed me a picture frame
It weighed in my hands, and the dust fell upon my jeans
I wished I could've reacted the way any girl my age would've
“Oh she looks pretty.”
“Oh she's so thin."
“Oh she did look like me!”
I couldn't bear to look at her any longer.
She was young, naturally, without those deep lines that run across her forehead and cheeks
She didn't carry a scowl as she usually does.
She made it seem as if she was smiling for you and only you
And she looked she free, with no worry weighing in her mind
My grandmother handed me another picture, and another, and another
I understood then, my mother should've never had children
I can't be sure she was ever happy with me around
I try so hard to have a civil conversation with her and yet we end up cursing each other
I take after my father, who can't choke out the words, “I love you”
The pictures shake in my hands “Grandma… Why did my mother marry?"
She smiled, sadly, without saying anything at all.
I knew better
"Daughters tend to make the same mistakes as their mothers..”
I long for that care free girl in the picture
I'd give up my own life to let my mother turn back from this path
She was so happy.. so so happy
I know I took this away from her and I know I can never give it back
She enters the room quietly, wearing that same damn scowl
I wish I could be anywhere but here with her

Still, as always, thinking about how Veth's story is such a complex look at womanhood and motherhood and what it means to be a woman and a mother who wants things. Because Veth's story is about wanting, just as much as it's about learning to be brave. Veth presumably comes from a very traditional small town, married her (effectively) high school sweetheart when she was quite young and had a child almost immediately, which, while based on love, might also have been an effort to fit in and become an independent adult in her town, away from the mockery of her brothers. The things people in town didn't like about her were her strangeness and her collections of bits and bobs and oddities. The shiny things that she wanted. In some ways, that was the wedge between her and her community, the strangeness of how she desired things and wantonly kept them. Even marrying and having a kid so young could be an extension of this. Veth wants things and strives to get them
All of that in heightened after she's turned into goblin. It becomes "the itch" to steal and to horde shiny, beautiful things, which is particularly poignant considering how ugly she finds herself, even uglier than she thought of herself when she was still a halfling. She wants to surround herself with beautiful things. She wants to help Caleb. She wants to be her again. She wants.
And it's okay for Nott the Brave to want things, because Nott the Brave exists outside of social contracts. She's already a monster--there's no need to pretend to fit in. It's freeing, to be able to want things as much as you want and people won't bat an eye. As much as she hated that body, she loved the freedom it gave her. The freedom to be transgressive in a way she was unable to be as Veth Brenatto. Because, much as she loves her family, isn't being a woman and mother something of a cage to her? Those labels put her in specific boxes, they determine how she should behave. So much of later development hinges on these questions: "What does it mean to be a good woman in this society? What does it mean to be a good mother?" She is SO hard on herself for not being with Luc enough, which is absolutely understandable, but she also wants this life of adventure. Does that make her a bad person? A bad mother? To want something that isn't her family?
And then Caleb. Probably the most unfortunate thing she wants, something she knows she can never have. Because she has Yeza and she loves him and he's her husband. They have a social contract that she must abide by. But Caleb's right there and she wants him. Does that make her a bad woman? Does that make her a bad wife? It's just one more thing that makes her different from her peers, her inability to be content with what she already has. And, at the end of the day, I think this is what we should think of when we talk about Veth's relationship with motherhood and womanhood. How transgressive it is for her to so deeply desire when clearly, from the way she grew up and the messages she internalized, it wasn't a woman's place to want more than she was afforded, nor was it a mother's.

Wonder Egg Priority shitting itself at the end makes more sense when you view the creator as the Japanese equivalent of Sam Levinson when it comes to misogynist men making deep 2edgy4u content disguised as having depth. Like the instant I saw his comments about how when guys kill themselves from bullying it's logical, but when girls do it it's usually emotional and went "OHHHH, this is why my hatred feels so familiar"

What's your interpretation that the left hand of cleric beast is much bigger that the right?🤔
Tumblr media
Well, like I've pointed out before, the only explanation I am seeing is blood ministration being done on the left arm!
Tumblr media
However, this might get a little more interesting with the Cleric Beasts, because Emilia is also one, yet her arms are symmetrical!
Tumblr media
My closest guess to why it happened is because of something Healing Church has been known to do with female bodies. Namely - do some sort of surgery/manipulation/operation on them in order to change their blood type into 'holy blood' one, which they are able to share with the hunters!
Tumblr media
English localization team had to use term "groomed" instead of whatever this actually says, and this is definitely going into top 10 of my biggest headaches with mistranslations! As you can see from the Japanese script retranslation ( x ), the meaning is more literal, implying a procedure. I always felt like it would be a surgery on bone marrow, since this is where blood cells are produced, and doctors in Bloodborne could have learned to alter them into having impossible type of blood!
So, as a female cleric, Amelia might have had her first communion with the holy blood as a Blood Saint, instead of generic blood ministration treatment like apparently everyone else has!
I am still not sure why female staff specifically was the Blood Saints, since apparently blood vials are not menstrual blood, as we can learn thanks to Adeline:
Tumblr media
Maybe it could have something to do with menstrual cycle, though, because of the whole cycle of moon vs menstrual cycle thing, and Laurence being affiliated with Moon Presence, and then Micolash also stealing his swag and basing his own institution on:
Tumblr media
I'd say this is either some sort of deeply rooted superstition within the setting, or in fact, yes, the holy blood links to the Great Ones who put HELLA importance on blood and birth, so being biologically female is crucial for that link to take intended effects.
Tumblr media
Ludwig is an interesting case, though! He was SUPPOSED to have blood ministration too, like Laurence or Cleric Beast of the Bridge! Why would not the first Healing Church hunter and the HEAD of their hunters do something so crucial? Especially since Cleric Beast of the Bridge drops the Sword Badge with which you buy Hunter Chief Emblem, implying that this beast is currently what Ludwig used to be? But his left arm is not bigger. In fact, it is even smaller. So I am trying to think of the variants of what had happened here:
1) Ludwig somehow merged with an actual horse, so his anatomy is simply no longer judged through the same lense
2) Ludwig is a leftie, and this is where he holds his Holy Moonlight Sword, so its effect would be a "remedy" for possible arm deformations
3) Ludwig is not a simple beast, but the one with a lot of Kin features, so his anatomy is simply no longer judged through the same lense (+horses are primarily herbivores, and Kin is associated with the flora in the setting, so maybe that's why he went horsegirl mode instead of getting something weak like antlers lol)
4) Ludwig is trans and actually was the first to get Blood Saint treatment rather than regular blood ministration (+we take Adeline's blood from her right arm, and notice that his right arm is a little bigger)
5) Ludwig is a cis man and was the first biological male who attempted to receive Blood Saint treatment instead of regular blood ministration, but that didn't take the intended effect because the gods Be Like That in the setting + his unusual visions and mutation might be the side effect of that and that's why Healing Church stopped doing that with male organisms. Basically, if a male attempts becoming a living factory for the holy blood, it will go "wrong".
6) Combinations of the above points
Tumblr media
.....Okay, that went a little unfocused from the initial topic, but you see my points here! Thank you for the ask!
_________________
Bonus ideas:
- Whereas Ludwig is holding the Holy Moonlight Sword in his left hand, Amelia also is grasping the Gold Pendant in her left hand. So maybe nothing was special about her, but holding a special item in the "effected" hand will remedy the asymmetry effect, and had Amelia not been doing that all the time, she'd be asymmetrical too?
- Amelia using recolored model for Bell-Ringing Woman for her appearance might be not accidental, but a fuel for the headcanon that she has Pthumerian blood too, and Pthumerians might simply evolve differently, or traditionally have different way they' go for the blood communition. Off the top of my head, look at Loran Clerics having same sized arms:
Tumblr media
Basically, I can answer why Cleric Beasts and the huntsmen have asymmetrical arms, but not why people like Emilia and Ludwig broke the trend despite being the first in line to have blood ministration normally... Because I just have too many ideas, and my preference usually falls towards the most logical ones, but when there are equally logical ideas I become helpless :')

The kind of Sad i’m feeling over Laudna gone is so strange. So upsetting.
Like, i know she’s probably coming back, within 1 or 2 episodes. I know this isn’t the end of her story. Is just, the particular circumstances of her death are so heavy and bleak.
Laudna was (is) a deeply tragic character that is portrayed as “cool with what happened” in a very interesting way. Walking the fine line between being shaped by her trauma, but moving forward in spite of it. But people forget that her trauma is massive... like impossibly massive, and then, this happens
She’s killed as a message for someone else, as a dare, as a device to impact the main person(s)... again. It wasn’t strictly a sacrifice or directly her choice (she stayed so a part was her choice, but not all of it). She’s killed by a powerful woman that didn’t even knew her name, she’s just a sacrifice device to advance the story of important people... again
And even now that she has friends and people around her, for the first time in her life, the hope that she may get resurrected back intermediately... Is not enough
She’s not a priority, she seemed fine with being dead, so yeah, others get the chance first right? It's just logical
This thought of “She has gone through worse, just add this to the pile” is just... god, so bleak, and it makes me so sad for so many reasons. I’m actually struggling putting it into words.
Because someone has gone through the worst that the world has to offer, should people just understand how “strong” and “used to it” are, and make them the shield for pain? Why don't give them a break? give them respite, love, help. They’re not going to ask for it, for so many reasons, but if you can catch those cracks, those small glimpses of vulnerability, they deserve a check in, they deserve help.
Just give her a break.

My mother's reflection lies in the mirror
I yelled at them, cursed at them so fiercely that it might have punctured a wound
I cry, in a way that they won't understand, "I never get time to myself!"
I hope these venomous words pierce through them like they're piercing me
I grit my teeth, my jaw clenched as anxiety oozes out from it. "I sacrificed a lot for you!"
It's only the truth, after all. A truth I must drill into their head.
I flung a glass plate, the delicate thing shattered instantly. "You are just like your father!"
They're sobbing uncontrollably, muttering incoherently. I wish their voice would fade away.
I continue, hoping that their tears will run out soon and be replaced with silent compliance.
Then I saw it, and I stopped abruptly, the bitterness still lingering in my mouth.
There was an antique mirror behind them, with a clear reflection.
I see... I see my mother staring back at me. It's a look of pity mixed with disgust.
She's a battered woman, wearing a terrible scowl and tired dark eyes.
Everything about her expression makes me want to scream.
Choking on my own tears, I quickly pushed that crying child aside
I tremble as I walk toward the mirror, bearing its reflection towards me.
No, that can't be me. It's not possible.
But it is, I'm the splitting image of my mother.
Oh god… oh god…
I look back at the frightened child, desperately trying to shrink in size
The child was me, and now I've become her

i read all 205 chapters of demon slayer last night in one 11 hour sitting. it was pretty good! surprise! the anime people have been raving about for the past several years is actually good quality. who would have thunk it. anyway i wanted to search up some reviews of the anime to see what other ppl thought of it but then i remembered the youtube anime community, with a few notable exceptions, is allergic to media literacy
#demon slayer#tanjiro is a very good protag and really embodies the themes of the story#very fresh too kind of like emma tpn#hes got a phat ass and wining personality like all other shounen protags but unlike most he isnt just talk#like he actually goes the extra mile to purposely be kind and it justifies why ppl like him so much a lot better i think#i was unfair in comparing it to bnha when i didnt even watch it#bc unlike bnha the author has a clear direction and kept things concise to drive home the poin#every character and plot point had a purpose#at least it does now since i havent had much time to actually pick at it yet#but anyway its got the standard shounen sexism but i think it was a LOT better than like. bnha or naruto#the girls are few and far between and arent as deep as the boys mostly#but i liked the love hashiras examination of womanhood in the taisho era#and the depiction of sex workers is surprisingly respectful#also the romance subplots arent forced (cough izuocha cough) like maybe you get the sense the characters have crushes?#but like! there are demons eating people! who tf cares! “im glad kanao isn't dead” yeah tanjiro me too youre such a romantic#but yeah the romance between the love and serpent hashira was pretty nice if lowkey#and otherwise i like how the ending just indicates that they may begin to like each other and the epilogue indicates they eventually did#how did it happen? idk! what the fanfics come up with would be better than what the manga would have squeezed in!#also i love how inosuke wanted a homoerotic sasunaru-bakudeku rivalry with tanjiro but tanjiro was too nice#and for the pervert/coward type character zenitsu was fairly likeable as well#i was worried nezuko was just going to be a glorified macguffin for tanjiro but she at least DID have agency sometimes#though i think they should have explored how she felt about the demon thing more and also show her casually with tanjiro#bc it feels like they only show her doing stuff when its a big angsty battle but i want her and tanjiro to annoy each other a bit!#shut up pandora

(@amorfati-rp Agares) She approaches the dragon quizzically. "You seem....different from the dragons I've heard about. How come you're so different?"
::THE GREEN DRAGON
Of all the people of the village who could have approached it, it was the half-elf girl that was most unexpected. That girl, always flitting to and fro. Back from her home, across the village, into the forest and out again to the wells - it was understandable. To the dragon's knowledge, she was without a father, she and those two brothers of hers. The priest had been happy to share the news of a pregnancy in the village, one directly attributed to that girl's mother, and so it could only be expected that weight be put on the eldest's shoulders. Even so... Similar to most residents of a grown age, the half-elf named Agares didn't press herself with coming too close to it most days, if ever. For some, it was merely their way of showing respect to a being as powerful as a dragon, no matter how diminished its powers had become in its old age. They didn't wish to bother it, and the dragon didn't mind - as a matter of fact, the gesture was appreciated some days when the pain had become overwhelming and it remained incapable of doing much else than simply laying with closed eyes. There were others, however, who feared the Green Dragon and its watchful rest over the village, that whatever gossip or slander spoken in its presence would be taken and relayed to the priest. Of course, it had enjoyed listening to all sounds of the confined, bustling life inside the forest's walls - but it could hardly be thought of as anything more than simple interest and adoration. These worries that came from those humans were stemmed from fear. Fear from their old home, fear from the very same mistakes that had led them there - it could hardly bear any resentment against that. Still, the priest hadn't been the dragons only company, much to its relief. The children, covered in dirt from their play, flocked to it nigh constantly despite their parent's lectures, climbing and shouting... It was a painful, but rewarding feeling. Most had never seen a dragon before, and paid little mind to the weakened form in distraction of the awe of its great wings and coiled tail. For those too shy to approach, it typically could afford to open its eyes enough to gaze back at the child, a cause of excitement for many. In these times, the priest would typically stay by its side, keeping careful watch ensure that the pain wouldn't grow too much, nor that any child ran astray. And from the shadows of the trees, that was when it had typically picked up on her presence. Not with the other adults, but staring from afar. Neither an adult nor a child, as the dragon had understood it, but still - far more child than adult. Those eyes were never settled on it, but rather, the priest besides it. In a way, that feeling of "Love" no matter how misplaced was the closest she had gotten to womanhood. Most others her age had already been married, or were much too caught up in their own affairs to afford the luxury of such needless pining and delusions. It was an obsession, one regarded with the same nonchalance as the dragon had with all affairs of the village, and so remained an unspoken secret between the two. It could tell it clearly; she meant no harm. She simply didn't know what to do. It was unexpected, then, that she had saw it. It was with the same bravery and innocent curiosity of a child that she had approached the resting dragon, and only after those words were spoken did it began to stir. Beyond the priest, the dragon didn't care to speak to anyone, simply preferring to watch their lives and interactions without its interference. And in those rare moments it did have something to say, it was always through him that those thoughts were conveyed. And this girl... There wasn't anything special about her. At least, not that commanded it's attention - she was a villager, a simple but precious existence it had seen years and years before. The dragon knew she would get along well without the need for words. Dulled, yellow eyes rolled open to stare drearily up towards her, and a long, tired sigh was its answer.
