THE HORNY VAMPIRE FILES - (entry 01)

Zacarie De Fay:

content warning. Zacarie being a bastard, implied death of the 1899 reader, predator and prey followed by nonsexual pet play. I do feel bad cuz this is going to be the least sexual entry of the entirety of the horny vampire files. If you're a mortal he aint gonna fuck with you like that under certain circumstances. Anyway, October has been waiting for SO long for Zac to be released on this blog because this man has the most simps, esp since I play him in our vtm game. Anyway! I'mma release some fucking nasty stories for him from time to time. Juicier stuff under the read more uwu.

We don’t know how old Zacarie De Fay is. We don’t even know if the one wearing a different face in London is the actual kindred that was documented all those years ago. But they go by the same name and have the same modus operandi as the vampire that was the key figure behind many of the Paris Vanishings, of both mortal and kindred. With the penchant for torture and keeping humans as… As pets, it wasn’t a big surprise he suddenly went missing around four decades after this little habit began. Even bigger surprise when he seemingly showed back up at the turn of the century, this time in London. Is it a copycat? A kindred victim that took on his personality? It can’t be a coincidence that he’s in the body of a Malkavian now, one that already showed a penchant for switching personalities.

More observation is needed.

The streets echoed with your own rapid breathing, water soaking through your shoes as rain hammered down onto you, leaving you soaked through and chilled to the bone. Yet you didn’t feel any of it. Not the frigid water, not the cold settling into your skin, not even your feet going numb. All you could feel was the rapid beating of your own heart, pounding in your ears so loud you couldn’t even hear the rain.

You stopped running for just a second, rapidly spinning around to search for any lights in the windows of the houses that lined the street, maybe an open shop. Nothing. All dark, all willingly closing their eyes. Paris was the city that never sleeps but tonight it slumbered, closing its many eyes to willingly let you be swallowed by the darkness, forgotten to unseen clutches.

An unholy scream echoed throughout the winding streets and only a moment later did you realize that you were the one who cried out. Fear perched on your tongue, pressing against your teeth, clawing to be let out, but you bit down on it. You weren’t going to give yourself away. Not when that bloodhound was stalking after you. Never running. You would feel better if it was. If it was rabid and sprinting and clawing and shouting. Then you could escape it in its own frenzy. Not this. Not the cocky walk of someone who knows your every move, who knows these streets better than you could ever.

Someone who knew that you would be back in his grip before the night was over.

Pain pounded at your feet but you knew better than to stop and rest. You already took too much time to find a safe haven.

Despite your feet protesting, you took off again.Either you were going to keep running until dawn, or hopefully you can find somewhere to hide. There was an alleyway up ahead, you could even double back and hide where its haven was, it would try and find you there. Maybe even-

Something slammed into your throat as you rounded into the darkened alley, tightening around your windpipe and slowly lifting you up until your feet dangled. The leather touching you was colder than the rain, than the winter air, than anything you’ve ever felt in your life. The vice-like grip on your throat felt as if it was cutting into your very skin. You wildly kick your legs and try to scratch at the arm holding you up, but you don’t seem to have an affect on it, neither scratching at his bare arm, or further down, trying to rip at its shirt.

“Now.” Its voice made you freeze up. Low, and husky, just like the sip of whiskey you accepted to calm your nerves from the same monster just hours earlier. Its accented voice spoke french flawlessly but with a strange tinge to its accent, something you found charming in the bar, now something that made you sure it was not human, a rotting creature wearing human skin. “Have you tired yourself out yet?”

It spoke like it was addressing an overactive dog and at your silence, it shook you, as if it was shaking a mutt by its collar. With a low sigh, the choke hold it had on you slackened and you were dropped to the flooded cobblestone street, water soaking into your clothes, pain shooting up your spine sharply.

Framed by the cold moonlight shining down on the grimy Parisian alleyway, Zacarie De Fay did in fact, not resemble a human.

Of course, he did look like one earlier. Attractive and tall, graceful on his feet despite the muscles across his chest and arms dimpled against his white shirt. High cheekbones that only brought attention to his cold eyes, a glinting green that stood out in the dark of the bar. He felt your stare and glanced over, eyes simmering behind the dark sunglasses he wore. A quick smirk flashed before he was at your elbow, offering to share a drink that night.

But framed by the moonlight, in the dark, with blood sluggishly pulsing from the puncture wounds in your neck, blood staining his lips, you knew.

Blonde hair made silver by the light, elongated fangs peeking out as he sneered down at you, his sun deprived skin looking more like stone than flesh. Staring up at him, you would never have likened him to the man you met hours ago.

Zacarie looked as if he was reading your mind, with the open enjoyment he showed at your distress, your horror.

“Please.” You could only utter. “I don’t wanna die.”

He cocked his head inquisitively at your words, before slowly kneeling down in front of you. You could see your own blood still slowly slipping down his Adam’s Apple, staining the collar of his dress shirt.

“What made you think I would ever kill you?” He chuckled, similar to a parent being amused by a silly misunderstanding their toddler had about the world.

You could only shakily inhale as he reached up to slip his sunglasses off, hooking them instead into the V of his shirt. His broad hand reached forward and squeezed your cheeks under his gloved fingers.

“Silly thing.”

2022

Time changes many things, but usually struggles to change creatures of the night. Marble statues that may be slightly chipped by the sands of time, but they remain standing tall.

One thing times struggled to change was Zacarie De Fay. It oversaw his change of body, but couldn’t quite change his hobbies or hunting practices. Hidden in the body of his somewhat friend, he still stalked the streets, a practise hunter. The streets of Paris weren’t too different from the streets of London after all. Alive and vibrant but shall willingly shut everything out when a monster stalks the streets.

His new body wasn’t too bad. Not as strong as his old one, but more limber. Dexterous, light on his feet. Doesn’t help the face was a natural beauty, drawing gazes wherever he went. He always called Sylvain a pretty boy to his face, but also called him a Backwater Rent Boy behind his back, flatly disbelieving he had much to offer other than a face. But, now, Zac found targets easier than ever. No one would believe that this angel faced bunny rabbit could ever harm anyone. It was always fun watching their eyes widen in horror when the facade dropped and a beast was waiting behind those shining mismatched eyes.

Life was still harder than it used to be however.

With a low sigh, Zacarie relaxed back in his chair, running his gloved hand through the messy black hair that was far too long for his liking. Tugging at a stray curl with annoyance, he quietly thanked whoever was out there for small comforts. Like his footstool.

Zacarie wasn’t a man that really wasted his victims, or overindulged. But how could he resist, when so many would quietly stare at his new face, some admiring from half the room away, others walking right up with a drink, and some thinking it would be a fun idea to try and drug a vampire over a century old. Sylvain was still a young one, to him at least, but at least this amateur stuff didn’t mess him up as much as it would for mortals.

One thing he missed was his dogs. Lucrece gave him two striking Pharaoh Hounds in Paris, quiet and stern and pitch black. Followed at his heels and good at deterring from anyone entering his private rooms.

Now, you didn’t do any of that.

But the way you lay obediently on the laboratory floor, eyes hazy and mind long gone? With only one thing that kept you going, the simple command of Obey? He didn’t mind as much as he would. It was like changing out two obedient beasts for a little lab rabbit, but it kept him entertained. He knew that technically he was never alone, not with the changing of the guards-esque switching between him and Sylvain and Lucrece. But he used to be able to actually… Spend time with them. Now, they’re slumbering and he gets a new dog that neither knows about.

He leans down and scritches along your chin, enjoying the soft whine you give. Zacarie wasn’t sure if he was going to miss you when he got bored and sent you back out into the world. Or harvested you for food. Humans were fragile, in need of constant care, and he was a busy man.

Now, keeping a kindred as a pet, that was a different problem. One he’d be beyond intrigued to look into.

so starting off, i really enjoy that we see things of carmens past get to her. i love love love it when our heros arent always perfect robots and do go through emotions; including past traumas that get to them

black sheep doesnt get it the first time, thats fine! she knows that shadowsan is a very skilled thief. but the more she misses the more agitated she becomes until it seems like shes stealing for her life. this is a lovely detail!!

there are a few things that i wanna talk about shang tsung in the mk legends animated film series.

The pros:

At first i didn't care for artt butlers shang tsung. As i am firmly convinced that no one can ever top cary hiroyuki tagawa. (Sorry not sorry that man IS SHANG TSUNG,thru n thru. Time and time again he shows up as shang i will drop everything. Fr! ) but for a VA,and comparison to shang's other voices. His isn't bad. It need to be a bit more...low and suave. But he has that "hiss" to his voice. That villain charm. Its not the best. Buuuuut its the closest we've got to an alternative for shang's voice.

His old man design is PEAK! omfg i can't gush enough how badass it looks. Young shang is ok. I never was a fan of "racoon death metal look" for shang tsung. But that's a personal preference. But his character design in the first 2 animated films is amazing.

His sass and swag is still good.

The first half of him fighting liu kang was good. The rest....well. I'll talk more about that in the cons.

His fight with Stryker was epic. Sorry stryker fans. I enjoyed his ass getting fatality'd too much. That fatality is a Klassic ok? Besides that the only time we really see shang fight fight. Ugh which is a pro and a con.

His banter with raiden is funny

Him besting quan chi at snek shit i live for. But i hate how quan chi is there too early in the story and upfrontly at that. Never liked that type of storytelling. Look quan chi is a cool villain,dont get me wrong. But i hate how people put him above shang or below him. When they both are two bad bitches and just go about the "sorcery" differently. Quan chi is a demon. He is gonna demon. And shang well he's just a curse mortal. But shang has more knowledge in soul magic,and can get more milage out of it than quan chi. Quan chi while a very powerful necromancer,is limited to the bounds of the netherrealm. And can be easily beaten if he isn't careful. However i hate it when NRS tries to replace him and do this back and forth shit. Like shang tsung is THE OG. quan chi was a Saturday morning cartoon replacement. FR LOOK IT UP! his debut was that old defenders of the realm mk cartoon. Which btw is a guilty pleasure of mine. But like i wont sugarcoat it,quan chi sucks in anything that isn't exposition character,or a character that is more for a stepping stone for a bigger threat. He does better in behind the scenes. Story wise and character wise. Look he's cool he just will never be as cool as shang tsung. Never will have that swag. He is the copycat of the "copycat"... see what i did there....cuz....shang tsung....shapeshifts....ok I'll stop now

Ok now for the cons...oh boy:

Shang tsung ok,look i love him. But he is WEEEEEEAK in the animated film series. Like good lord. We only get one or two fights in the whole two ass first films. I dont count the snowblind because face it....it sucks beyond them putting two hardly used characters. Which also in turn sucks because these unused characters we haven't seen in a bit. Are cool af. And it sucks they have to be in a film which in all honesty is unnecessary af.

The pacing is too sloppy and fast.

Shang tsung is for some unholy reason a simp for shao kahn?! Hello do the writers even know who shang tsung is?! Shang tsung would sell shao kahn out for one cornchip. FR! Like shang tsung isnt some lapdog. He may pretend. But he aint. We never saw him one bit be sneaky towards shao kahn. It's just disappointing af that these people are one step forward two steps back with characters.

Hardly any time for fatalities. Like get rid of that x ray shit. That is only good for games. Putting it in animated movies distracts us from the actual action and fighting and dialogue and storytelling. Which is probably why it sucks. Because they used it as filler for a sloppy script.

I wanted to see shang tsung soul suck. Fr. Like i mean actually take an opponent and succ souls. We didn't get that hardly. For a guy known for that. He hardly is shown doing it when it calls for it.

We again don't see a good fight. As i mentioned above,liu kangs fight was disappointing af! Not just for shang tsung,but for liu kang as well! It was so anime gokufied its not even funny. Piss poor dbz lvl of writing. Wattpad has better fight scenes written. Ao3 has better writing. Hell some fans do a better job at putting some people at the edge of their seats. How come "professional" film writers can't even make one fight scene good? Makes it make sense.

On top of that shit,liu kang only used his bicycle kick once. Wtaf. Thats a signature move and he uses it quite often. (At least players do. Lol) and shang tsung should have gotten at least one bootkick. I love shang tsung,but damn nothing?! Ugh

That fight was good in the first half. But it ended as quickly as it started and was honestly lukewarm. And is an absolute disrespect to both characters capabilities. Shang should have gave liu a bit more of a challenge. And liu should have came out swinging last minute. But barely makes it out alive. Just to show the audience....HOW FUCKED THINGS ARE IN MORTAL KOMBAT!

Therefore....when liu fights shao kahn.....ITS SERIOUS! dun dun dun. Lol. But fr tho. Actually show the stakes are high. Dont let your protag win easy. Make it actually fucking hard. And make it bittersweet af when they "win". Because this is mortal fucking kombat baby. Not some cutesy fucking bland ass cheesy overrated boring popcorn flick comicbook movies *cough*. There is no happiness here,only bittersweet Victories.

I kinda hate how cramped the films feel. Like i said too fast paced. Like they are trying to cram 30+ years of games in 2 or 3 movies and that isn't feasible because there is too much lore. Confusing af lore. So in order to make it better. It would have been better as a series instead of films or movies. Like an animated series. Even a mini series would work better. More time to actually flesh things out.

Unless you like scorpion,raiden and maybe shang tsung,you wont like scorpions revenge. And if you like raiden battle of the realms will rip out your heart like a one eyed aussie. Speaking of which If your a kenshi fan,sure snowblind is cool. But if you like me and dont give a damn about kenshi,like i dont hate the guy i just dont find him interesting enough to have his own damn movie. When there is so many other characters that deserve their own movie. And shang tsung they fo so dirty in that movie its criminal. Like it legit should be illegal to nerf your OG big bad. Like that was trash. And Kano shouldn't be more important than he needs to be. Like i love the man but no. He is better as a steet level villain with some braincells enough to lead a mercenary faction of cutthroats. Like the guy rules the underground,that's how it should stay. Nothing bigger,nothing less. Like kano isn't supposed to be a wish brand shao kahn. Ok?! Kano is kano. And is supposed to be that bastard who stays in the streets,ya know.

Ok im done venting for now. But yeah. The animated films are decent. But they still are lackluster and are a far cry from what we mk fans,and especially OG fans. Deserve.

a/n: where are my fellow jayce simps (also the way busyness is spelt is cursed)

You begin to stretch, still half asleep, listening to birds singing outside your window accompanied by the busyness of Piltover's streets. You slowly open your eyes starting to feel more awake but still not ready to leave the bed. It feels warmer than it did last night suddenly becoming aware of the quiet snoring beside you.

You slowly turn your body and are welcomed by the sight of your sleeping husband. A small smile appears on your face while slowly taking his hand. You didn't expect him to be here this morning considering he had been spending the last couple of nights at the laboratory with Viktor.

You can't pull your eyes away from Jayce. You haven't seen him look so content in a while. You were so used to seeing that worrisome look on his face, constantly wondering if he was doing the right thing, that you almost forgot what he looked like without his eyebrows knitted together causing troublesome lines to appear on his young face.

You gently place your hand on his cheek, caressing the somewhat soft skin. Jayce hums in delight, clearly still asleep, making you smile. You wanted him to sleep for as long as possible.

You're somewhat taken by surprise when your husband rolls over, throwing his arm across you and burying his face in your pillows. You quietly laugh trying to move up the bed so you could still kind of breathe even with Jayce almost on top of you.

You hear a quiet groan, sounding almost like a whine, from him making you stop moving. Jayce quietly grumbles something but you're unable to understand it because it mostly sounds like gibberish.

Jayce grip around you becomes more secure as you feel a soft pair of lips against your temple. You gently run your nails up and down one of his arms getting another quiet hum in response.

You watch him, unsure if he was fully awake yet or if you could possibly lull him back to sleep. Unfortunately you got your answer when his eyes slowly open before looking down at you. A tired, goofy smile graces his face while pulling you closer so he can kiss you.

You smile against his lips while wrapping your arms around his neck. You start to play with his hair as Jayce moves his hand up the back of your shirt.

"Mmm, you're warm." You say cuddling up into his chest. Jayce laughs while tracing circles on your bare skin.

"Yeah, you were freezing cold when I came in last night." He shakes his head lovingly as you look up.

"I didn't think you were coming home last night." You rest your hand on his bare chest, fidgeting with the necklace you gifted him on his birthday. You don't think he's ever taken it off.

"Yeah," he awkwardly laughs. "I wasn't exactly planning on coming home either." You try and hide the subtle frown that crosses your features as Jayce lifts your chin up so you're looking at him. You glance to the side while he brushes his thumb across your bottom lip.

"I wish you didn't have to work so late... especially with no breaks in between. I worry about you." You sigh while gently holding onto Jayce's wrist. You look back at him and he gives you a small smile.

"I know, but..." Jayce's smile grows bigger as his sentence drags.

"Why?" You ask putting your hand to Jayce's forehead. He rarely blew off work.

"Same reason I came home last night," he grabs your face again leaning down. "I missed you." Jayce kisses you and your heart melts because of his words.

"I missed you too... so what did you have in mind for your day off?" Jayce thinks for a moment before giving you a boyish smile.

"I have a thing or two in mind." He says before rolling on top of you. You feel your cheeks get a little warm before you respond.

"Yeah? Like what?" You run your hand up his back as Jayce leans down to kiss you.

"Well, we don't need to move unless you want a change of scenery." You laugh as Jayce starts to trail kisses down your neck. You bite your lip before saying:

"Actually... I would love some fresh air. Maybe the balcony?" You ask innocently making Jayce freeze. He looks up at you with a surprised yet excited expression.

"Seriously?" He asks making you laugh and shake your head. Jayce groans while laughing coming back up to your face. You kiss him feeling his hands go up your shirt.

"I mean, who knows..." you pull away from the kiss while twirling a piece of Jayce's hair. "Maybe if you play hooky more I'd be more inclined to do it." Jayce smiles while sighing.

"Guess I'll just have to play hooky more."

Summary: You are a faceless youtuber who does Sims4 and ranty vlogs, but somehow you end up playing a game with your friend Rae and then things get 💕💕💕.

Warnings: so far none!

As soon as you turned off your camera you instantly brought your knees up to your chest and hugged your legs tightly, trying to breath and process this last round. When you encountered Corpse kill your friend you couldn't help the shriek that left your mouth, even though as soon as it came out, you covered your mouth with your hand, biting at your palm.

Corpse didn’t even tell you to do anything, you just knew you had to keep quiet and almost instantly you two had made a silent pact. You followed him around as he successfully killed the rest of the players and you even made a few congratulatory comments like “good job!” or “omg savage!” when he did. Meanwhile you could see your chat going crazy asking you when you had switched teams or basically poking fun at you for running around like Corpse’s puppy.

Not to mention that after you were voted out everyone in your chat started freaking out about what Corpse proceeded to do. To avenge you. As you watched him win the game while also mumbling about you, you felt your jaw slack open but you pushed through, deciding to chat about random things with your followers. You weren’t surprised when you saw that Corpse and Toast won as impostors, you even let a soft “yay” escape your mouth and then laughed incredulously about it with your chat.

Afterward you mention to the guys that this had been your last round which made them all start to boo and joke around.

“Booo Y/n! It's only 11pm!” Rae whined through your headphones. Everyone else agreed but you sighed and tried to explain yourself.

“I know! But I'm not made for gaming like you guys! I usually fall asleep by 11:30pm so I would already be in bed by now!! I'm the grandma friend!” You let out a yawn by the end of your sentence and you saw your chat start spamming you with a few of “awwww y/n is such a cutie” and “she is such a grandma.” You chuckled a bit at that but then you heard something that made your breath cut out.

“Aww, such a baby y/n.”

All in all, it was pretty fun and it was a hell of a first time playing this game. Everyone hanged out a bit and congratulated you for your first game. Rae even started to joke about how you had become a Corpse simp but that's when you decided to proceed to call it a night. Probably the best choice given your present state. You love your friend but, too soon, man, too soon. Twitter didn’t seem to agree with you on that.

Toothiana Concept Design Review

As promised, I tried to hunt down every single design of her and I think i got them all. (Or at least most.) It’s the Queen’s turn lets go, starting with her book designs!

According to Joyce, this is one of the earliest designs for Tooth. She started out as a suited human and not as a human-bird hybrid. If you squint you can see a widow’s peak/hairline on her head. She gives me more super hero-like vibes in this one and the peacock feathers are interesting! I can’t say I’m a fan of it. Below is another book design I found that is VERY similar to this one, so I grouped them together.

Rating: 4/10 Glad he made her more bird like.

As a bonus, here is the design for Tooth as a child. Her toy there looks almost like a tooth but I have no idea what it actually is. I like how u can see a tiny curl of her hair under the hat. Otherwise I don’t have a lot of thoughts on this one.

Rating: 4/10 Not a fan but this exists I guess. BUT SHE ALSO HAS A SWORD.

A tooth that appears in the Man In The Moon Picture book. (Heh it almost looks like shes hanging onto Aster’s sleeve here.) I just noticed shes got an F symbol on her bag that she has on the belt of her childhood outfit. She looks kinda angelic here ngl. Very wintery colors. Rating: 6/10 Wish she was more colorful just a little bit

THERE SHE IS. THE FINAL BOOK TOOTH. Her feathers are absolutely stunning and the feather-puffy pants combo is A LOOK(A good one). The only things I got that bother me is how round her head is at the top. If it had longer feathers that stuck out it’d look a little less weird. And one other thing

Ear Feathers?????? Don’t know why but this AINT A VIBE. Rating: 7/10 looks like a queen and the swords are badass

I cannot stress enough how many movie Tooth designs exist so buckle up.

Starting with a mysterious human looking Tooth, this design surfaced from this post 8 years ago. The original poster claimed it wasn’t from the movie credits and I couldn’t find any other trace of this design so it’s dubious at best. However I included it just in case it was in the movies/plans at some point of production. (I’m a little skeptical but oh well.) I do like how her outfit does look similar to real life outfits of her home region and she just looks gorgeous here.

Rating: Dubiously Canon/10

This one feels more stylistic but damb I gotta appreciate how intricate her feathers look. Looks like she’s right out of a storybook and it’s very appealing.

Rating: 6/10 Not many thoughts just love her

A fascinating one I found in my search. This was one of three designs that had Tooth in a mask but if you squint you can see she has a knife/dagger. So she would have had that blade wielding quirk like her book counterpart. She looks a bit more human in this one(At least in my opinion) The little flared collar is a nice touch that I oddly like. She looks like a fairy queen here for sure. She almost reminds me of a fencer Rating: 5/10 Good but too human

The other masked Tooth! There are, a lot of thoughts I have about this one. The colors are GREAT and so are her wings. Her body however reminds me of the suited Tooth design Joyce had drawn up. It looks almost like shes wearing a shirt with holes in it over a pink one and I just don’t know how to feel about it. Something is just off about this one.

Rating: 3/10 Wings r great throw the rest away

Another rare Tooth. She looks very similar to the one above and still has that mask. Or it could just be her actual head and not a mask this whole time! What a twist. Anyway, given the lighting it’s hard to tell what her base colors were but I’ll work with what we got. She’s a little less colorful looking than the other Tooths so it’s a little disappointing. Her wings are still quite impressive in my opinion.

Rating: 5/10 It’s nice but very one note in this concept image color wise

Now this Tooth is an interesting one. She ditched the bird theming all together and is more butterfly themed. She’s more humanoid here but something about this design just hits a sweet spot for me. It’s very simple but I can’t explain it. Also I’m weak for her head covering/hood(?)

Rating: 8/10 Ignore the very blue white haired Sasuke lookin guy in her arms

Excuse the very poor image quality here. I could only find it in this resolution so we gotta squint on this one. This one.. Call me weak but its one of my favorites. Her puffy pants make a return and they look like actual clothes! Her feather-cloak is a nice touch. I *think* this Tooth has hair if you look close but it’s hard to tell. It works in this design oddly works! Rating: 8/10 No complaints! Just that its so JPEGY AAAAA

Oh man Y’all I

Her energy itself is powerful. This Tooth feels older than the final design and has a very seasoned look to her. Call me a simp I DONT CARE. She’s such a queen here and I can’t get over it

She lives in my head rent free and I will never ask her to pay rent. I’ll PAY HER. If I was forced to pick a favorite Tooth, it’s this one. She has fantasy elements and traits that remind me of an Indian Queen.

Rating: 10/10 Y’all already know i simp for this one I dont need to put anything else here.

The final Tooth having gold feathers to imitate jewelry is just as good so I have no complaints about her. Her eyes are absolutely stunning

They sort of remind me of a mosaic with light shining on it or gemstones even. That and her eyelashes are so on point. I fuckin ADORE THEM. No lash glue needed those are all natural baby. Additionally, she’s very humming bird themed(which is excellent) but her wings actually look more like dragon fly wings

Curious since they are one of(if not the) fastest flying insect. It makes sense when you see how fast Tooth can zip around. It never occurred to me until dragonflies came around this season and I watched them closely. Overall I adore this version of her all the same.

it’s honestly very odd to me that disney has been retconning their iconic properties for 7 odd years now, if my memory is serving me correctly & maleficent was the first time they’d done this, and their fans, the Disney Simps, if you will, seem pretty unaffected by this. the decision to do a cruella deville backstory is stupid for obvious reasons – let’s turn the woman who’s name is effectively Cruel Devil into a girlboss – but i dont really get what their angle with the remakes is in general, aside from trying to ensure they keep their shit copyrighted until Yellowstone explodes.

I would sincerely love to sit in the focus groups wherein they decide what elements of the source material to doctor – “we have to cut the pink elephant scene from dumbo, even though it’s the only one that anyone remembers, because we can’t have an... underaged elephant... get turnt. and the circus eventually becomes cruelty free and stops using animal performances. jasmine already marched to the beat of her own drum in the animated aladdin, but we should throw a musical number in there to drive home how Fierce she is. gay representation is what people want to see right now, so let’s make a minor character from beauty and the beast that everyone forgot about gay and call it a night.”

the things they choose to overhaul aren’t details that anyone was criticizing to begin with. like someone in the marketing department saw “disney princesses drawn as CEOs” clickbait and just assumed the entire representation debacle online was a question of revisionist mad libs.

I spent an irresponsible amount of time yesterday binge watching YouTube essays about how the simpsons declined and atrophied, and the one thing I didn’t see pointed out in any of them was that the simpsons was very inherently a product of its time: when it aired in ’89, it served as an absurd and caricatured portrayal of an american family, but close enough to the actual picture to remain relatable. but the simpsons is still airing in 2021, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense when viewing it through the lens of homer being born in the mid-80s and growing up with an N64 and being raised on nickelodeon. a millennial homeowner supporting a family of five on a singular income. and since the in-universe canon has surpassed the point where you could just say “well, the 90s just never ended in springfield” you couldn’t effectively modernize it without burning the whole damn thing to the ground

it also calls to mind the old joke about comics (“the only one who stays dead is uncle ben”) which are similarly repackaged and rebooted with each new generation of consumer. batman gets meaner, or nicer, gets a new batmobile, a touchscreen batphone, whatever, but there’s never going to not be a batman.

and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. im not even going to get into stuff like dark fuck archie, aging disgruntled powerpuff girls reboot, the ill-conceived television adaptation of heathers, and the rest of it. there’s this weird phenomenon going on right now, like media necromancy or something. I don’t even know what to call it. endless retooling of existing properties even when they’re inextricably products of their time, to some extent. It’s like executives just threw their hands in the air and exclaimed “welp, this is as good as its ever going to get”

i dont know if it speaks to the purchasing power of nostalgia, or that people are generally creatures of habit and their media tastes reflect that to an extent, or that these corporations are just banking on these familiar titles knowing they’re a safer bet than something new. maybe a little of all of it to varying degrees – im not going to pretend I know the full answer to this. maybe I’m just getting old and becoming one of those old people who bitches about “aint used to be like this...” from my wooden rocking chair on the porch. either way, i wish people would stop, like, enabling this stuff with their wallets. it’s difficult for good media that makes contemporary sense to get as much traction as it deserves when the waters are this polluted
