im gonna make you listen to MY music now 😈 Sophtware Slump by Grandaddy
i did listen to this whole album because i put on the first song and thought 🫠🫠 oh shit this is good. so ty for a very nice 46 minutes 🥰
1. the best song on the album
okay so it actually has to be Broken Household Appliance National Forest just because i had a ‘woagh is this gay sex?’ moment (as usual) over this line
Tumblr media
incredibly slutty line i love it. also ye— a the thesis statement of organic and inorganic melding together, pollution and oil casting rainbow hues on water, streams threaded with heavy metals running to killing deer. actually this made me think of thise zombie deer do you know about the zombie deer? oh and the special emotion that is finding a washing machine overgrown with weeds in the forest and thinking ‘god, i hope your family is looking for you.’
2. my favourite song on the album
personal fav is Jed the Humanoid. crying in the club you made something so beautiful you made a friend and he could solve lots of problems and then new shiny things drew you away and while you weren’t looking,,,, he went away
Tumblr media
speaking for the guys who feel a little bit abandoned in the wake of everything… yeah 🥹
3. my least favourite song on the album
the E. Kenivel Interlude. i am a simple guy and that’s just some noise.
4. the most overrated song on the album
not that i have a clue what’s popular in this album but i’m gonna say Crystal Lake. for no discernible reason.
5. most underrated
uhh Miner at the Dial-A-View only because the way the person who speaks pronounces their ‘d’s’ reminds me of my old philosophy tutor who was unfairly good-looking and correct about everything and that was just… a specific memory for that song to land on so yea… i feel as though how much i like this song (a lot) is personal enough to make it underrated in a ‘you don’t get how important those d’s are to me’ kind of way.
6. the banger of all bangers
He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot for hitting all the shit i’m sensitive about 🫠
Tumblr media Tumblr media
um. something about not being a person for a few years & when you come back you’re a stranger to everyone and they don’t love you anymore. and you just have to deal with that.
7 rate from 0-10
genuinely ten/ten i am biting you right now i just got vivisected

5 albums I can’t live without (in no particular order):
let it be/tim- the replacements
blonde on blonde- bob dylan
new adventures in hi-fi- r.e.m.
blue- joni mitchell
third- big star
Favorite song right now: in a pavement phase rn (keep takin pictures of roads !!!! :-D jk jk ) harness your hopes- pavement
Song I associate with my favorite ship: uhhh idk. sometimes i’ll be listening to favorite thing by the replacements and i’ll think about the time bob and david were at the montreal comedy festival and they were forced to share a room and they stayed up all night laughing and spent the day falling asleep on each others shoulders (according to janeane garofalo) and sometimes ill think maybe bob looked at david&was like... ur my favorite thing <3
A song that could be about me: every time i listen to girl from the north country i will swing my long hair over my breast and be like :0 me ????
A song that reminds me of a good memory: not what this question is looking for but i like love the song saturday by chicago now because it’s used in my favorite stella sketch. and im like i know i fucking hate this song except now i love it because the association is just so positive it overcomes everything
A song I find overrated: I even like shiny happy people but the one r.e.m. song that can just drive me nuts is everybody hurts. i kind of like it in the context of automatic for the people but i really do not care for it as a single. and everybody shits on shiny happy people and i get it but what about everybody hurts.
A song I find underrated: I don’t know how it is not a more popular opinion that answering machine is the best ‘mats song. but paul agrees w/ me and that’s all that matters <3
A song I want my mutuals to listen to: if i could get more people on old people tumblr to listen to the replacements i would be so so happy. but barring that uh she floated away- husker du
A song that makes me laugh: sounds of science bestie boys :)
Last song I listened to: freak scene -🦖jr
This was a good ‘ol time !!! i’ll tag @indiedadrock @brutefury @roadsideprophets @jspaceman iffen y’all would like 2 👽

Whats your favorite song at the moment
Hey Nonny!
Ooof Too many, hahhaha! Because I don’t leave home anymore, I’m not looking constantly for new music to add to my Playlist, so mostly it’s stuff that I come across on Tumblr and is living rent-free in my head on repeat, or me digging on my harddrives for a nostalgia kick.... currently, these are the top 5 cycling in my head, no particular order:
(EDIT IT’S NOW TEN. I COULDN’T CHOOSE. LISTEN TO THEM ALL. THEY’RE ALL AMAZING)
(EDIT 2 SORRY IT’S NOW 15!! NONNY I’M SO SORRY. I know no one cares, but I LOVE sharing my Music with people)
(EDIT 3 *SIGH* Now 20. :| HELP. Stopping before I get carried away. No one ever likes my music so I love when people ask me for my songs with genuine interest)
Nathan Evans - The Wellerman (220 Kid X Billen Ted Remix) (flashing images CW in video!) – Got into the original of this one during the sea shanty trend, and then this dance remix came out... those of you who know me well, know that I am HOOKED on remixes, especially dance remixes. So I was so happy about this official one.
The Kiffness - Ievan Polkka ft. Bilal Göregen (Club Remix) – This one I got into because I think, again, the original with the blind man was trending, and then I found this remix artist on YouTube from his remix of The Wellerman, and his is SOOOO good!! I loved this song back in the early noughts when it was popular as “Leek Spin”. But then these young folks had to go and make it amazing again!!
ZHU, partywithray - Came For The Low – (LOTS OF FLASHING LIGHTS IN VIDEO CW!) Thank Falcon And the Winter Soldier for this one! It took me a WEEK to find out what song they’re playing in the club in Episode 3 when Zemo’s dancing, and YAY I found this finally (not the one hour one, sadly, still trying to find the song D+ Marvel used for that one). I LOVE IT. LISTEN TO IT. SO good if you like heavy club beats
Sim Gretina - A Friend Like Me (Electro Swing Remix) – This is SATISFYING. I LOVE IT. Found it years ago after that homemade Aladdin carpet video was going viral, and every time it comes up on my playlist, I replay it like 6 times.
Linkin Park - Numb (80′s Remix) – That tumblr meme song that went around years ago? HERE YOU ARE!!! :D This is TOO SHORT and it’s also on repeat when I listen to it. Y’all, this is what depression feels like when you’re trying to pretend to be happy all the time LOL. It’s a whole MOOD. This one is great to blast in the car and have people confused at you singing at the top of your lungs. Like, “I AM NUMB AND AN EDGELORD BUT READY TO PARTY!!!”.
One Ton - Supersexworld – Okay, this is an OLLLLLLDDD one by a one-hit wonder Canadian band that I stumbled upon recently when I was going through my hard drives to find new stuff to put onto my iPhone. I was OBSESSED with this song when it first came out, forgot about it, and NOW... SHIT I can’t STOP. This one is BLARING when I hear it, and am so happy I found it again. It’s simple, amazing, and AWESOME. LISTEN TO IT. You will love it. Please. It’s got one verse and one chorus over and over, and it’s catchy as hell. It’s on my personal Johnlock playlist :D
Deorro - Rise and Shine – GUYS. This song. Also on my personal Johnlock Playlist, this one is SOMETHING. First heard it in my BodyPump class, I NEEDED it. It’s SO GOOD. Jazzy Club Music??? YES PLEASE! Video is all kinds of amazing? YES PLEASE. PLEASE listen to this. I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch (Eiffel 65 Remix) – Is this song a decade old? YES. Has it been on my iPod since it first came out? FUCK YES. Y’all, Eiffel 65 is SO underrated for their remixes. This is one of their best remixes, and it’s the PERFECT walking song. YES I look like an idiot walking to it, but I love it SO MUCH. It’s better than the original, imho.
Gotye feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know (Bastian Van Shield Remix) – LOL I KNOW: sacrilege to remix Gotye, but Y’ALL. This is the DEFINITIVE remix of one of his best songs. Six minutes of pure club beats, and just... ANOTHER perfect walking song that you need to SCREAM at the top of your lungs. Also on my personal Playlist, John POV, that I will share eventually.... it makes sense in the song order on the list, I promise LOL)
Tee Lopes - Marble Zone '12 – Tee Lopes is the official composer for Sonic Mania, hired because of all his AMAZING Classic Sonic remixes he did as a hobby on his YouTube channel. This one has a Tango flavour, and it’s SO good and not long enough. There’s an extended version here. Also love his Flying Battery and Ice Cap remixes. If you love video game music remixes like I do, check out his YT channel. There’s a TONNE there and it’s GREAT music to write to.
Aaron Smith - Dancin’ (KRONO Remix) – I dunno where I first heard this one, but I LOVE it. It’s like trancey club music. It’s beautiful, and WORTH a listen.
Pet Shop Boys - I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing [Extended Nude Mix] – Ooooof this one has been on my faves for a LONG time. Originally heard this on the PSB’s album Disco 2, back when their remixes were this good and long and clubby. I miss these so much. If you want a good club beat to thump your car, this is it my friends.
Informätik - A Matter of Time – FUCK ME I love this song. This is the song that made me want to start a Johnlock playlist. I talk more in length about it on this post here, but yeah, I still just.. MM. It’s just so beautiful and is what got me into EBM music in the first place. I listened to this and a lot of their music quite often in college when I was pining over people. Always the pining and never the requited, LOL. I just really love it.
Pride and Fall - Paragon – GUYS. This one is SO good. Trancey EBM and just, UGHGGHHGHGHHHG It gives me so many feels. I’ve loved this song for SO many years, and just, still has to be on every iPod I own. It’s beautiful, and the lyrics are beautiful and I wish I was as beautiful as this song, LOL. Please listen and enjoy. Best bit is a 3:11 :D <3
Rammstein - Mein Teil (Pet Shop Boys Remix) – GUYS. This is one of the greatest collabs of all time. I love both Rammstein AND Pet Shop Boys, and was SO EXCITED when they remixed this song for the single. This is the better of the two remixes PSB did for them, and YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO IT. PURE CLUB BLISS. This is the PSB in their remixing best!!!! <3 Plus, it’s SUPER WEIRD to hear these angry Germans backing a club beat, I LOVE IT. Also, it’s literally a song about a true story of literally eating a dick, so.... *shrugs*
Pet Shop Boys - Love Etc. (PSB Mix) – Y’ALL. This is 6 minutes of LITERAL dance music BLISS. A fantastic remix of one of my fave songs from the PSB, which is essentially shitting on the materialism of relationships. And I love this one, it’s a great work out and car song. Honestly PLEASE listen to it.
Apoptygma Berzerk - Kathy’s Song (Beborn Beton Remix) – GUYYYYYYYYYsSSSS I love this song so much. The original is much slower, and I discovered Beborn Beton FROM this song (another great artist, check them out). This song is just, a great dance song, and just makes me scream out when I hear it. Full volume, beautiful song, beautiful lyrics. It’s my Android!lock headcanon song, but it is also on my JL Personal Playlist, LOL.
Darude vs. Robert Miles - Children of the Sandstorm – One of the BEST MASHUPS in the world, and I am CERTAIN it is an official one; I was obsessed with mashups when I was in college so I have a TONNE of them, but this one has always been a fave, and I still jam to it over a decade later. Seriously, these songs SEAMLESSLY blend together, it’s fantastic. Classic club and trance? HELLS YES.
Eminem - Nobody Listen to Techno (Deep Dish Mix) – Another nostalgia hit for me. Is it pointless? Not if I enjoy it!! I LOVE this song. Deep Dish mixes were THE JAM in my college years, and like, this is just 9 minutes of PURE techno with some of his song “Without Me” sampled throughout. I LOVE IT. SO MUCH. This is a banger, and just, if you need music to listen to while driving or writing, this is one for you!!
Rammstein feat. Sharleen Spiteri - Stirb Nicht Vor Mir (Don't Die Before I Do) – And to bring the mood WAYYY down, did you know Rammstein did a love song? A beautiful, moves-me-to-tears love song? Because I did and it’s one of my FAVE songs by them. It’s SO beautiful, and the Till’s harsh voice WORKS for it. It’s gentle and soothing. It’s a German/English duet, and it makes me nearly cry EVERY TIME. Because I imagine John and Sherlock and then I die inside LOL. It’s so beautiful and I listen to this one years after it was released. Look up the translation, it is so beautiful.
AND if you guys happen to like any of these songs, copy the youtube video link and use this :)
Most of these that aren’t silly are on my Johnlock playlist, so do give the latter songs a listen! <3 I’m sorry for adding more than five... I just really love sharing things with you guys I like because I’m so lonely, LOL.
If any of y’all are playing these and trying to pick me up, *finger guns* Let’s go get cake and jam :D
AHH I like when I get asks like this! Sorry I took so long Nonny, but I just kept ADDING to it, as you can see. Had to stop because I could keep going.

Track by Track Review - Hottest 100 2020
Wrote this article a little bit ago just for fun. Decided to post it on here with the thought of maybe getting back to the Bish Review. Also, put an asterix next to my votes (songs that made my top 10). Anyway, here we go:
100. Kool - BENEE
One of the many gems from ‘Hey u x’. Unlucky to hear her biggest hit so early on.
99. Itch - Hockey Dad
I thought ‘Brain Candy’ was a little bit of a disappointment, but Itch was one of the strongest tracks they duo have released.
98. Your Man - Joji
Surprised to hear this track in the countdown. Pretty solid tune though
97. Audacity (feat. Headie One) - Stormzy
He’s still one of the best from the UK rap scene and this track shows why.
96. Germaphobe - Hockey Dad
One of the weaker tracks, I thought, off Brain Candy, but not surprised a lot of Hockey Dad fans liked this one. Definitely plays into their audience’s taste.
95. Loose Ends (feat. G Flip) - Illy
I do not like Aussie Hip Pop. This track is not an exception.
94. Rain (feat. Tay Keith) - Aitch and AJ Tracey
The piano in this is very ‘Humble’ - Kendrick Lamar. Still a banger though.
93. Lemonade (feat. Gunna, Don Toliver and NAV) - Internet Money
Bit of a forgettable track. It’s okay, but feels like there’s a lot better like this out there.
92. These Days - Thelma Plum
First cover of the countdown. Still one of the best Hottest 100 number ones, and Thelma does it justice.
91. Charlie - Bugs
Second cover of the countdown. I do like this but I feel it doesn’t reach the same heights as the original.
90. No Time To Die - Billie Eilish
A little expected from Eilish but still a solid Bond song (the second in history to make it).
89. In Her Eyes - The Jungle Giants
I cannot wait for the new Jungle Giants album. They’ve gotten better and better with each release.
88. Heart Attack (feat. lau.ra) - BRONSON*
I fell deeply in love with this song the second I heard it. It just has this quiet yet strong emotion behind it. The production on it is something else as well.
87. Three Leaf Clover - Teenage Joans
A really solid debut single by the Unearthed High winners. Can’t wait to hear more from them.
86. Laugh Now Cry Now (feat. Lil Durk) - Drake
I still don’t get the hype for Drake. The falsetto “baby” in the chorus also never ceases to make me laugh.
85. Too Tough Terry - Dune Rats
Dunies slow descent from mature stoner pop to edgy tracks for teens has been hard to watch. This song just seems like a parody of the band.
84. Chicken Tenders - Dominic Fike
Has to be the sexiest song about the best thing in the frozen food section at the supermarket. Pity the album didn’t live up to the hype.
83. Down For You - Cosmo’s Midnight and Ruel
I was really keen for this once I heard about the collaboration between the two. Unfortunately it felt a little too much like a Ruel song and it doesn’t really feel like Cosmo’s Midnight had much of a touch on it.
82. The Clap - The Chats
It’s a bit generic for The Chats but I just like hearing them get more popular. Just hilarious dudes.
81. Weightless - Spacey Jane
One of the stronger and more unique tracks on Sunlight. The synth touches really suit the band.
80. Freaks - FISHER
Cannot wait for FISHER to just slowly fade away. His tracks all sound the same and are so basic.
79. my future - Billie Eilish
One of the best tracks Eilish has released. Love how this just turns halfway through from a really soft ballad to a bit of an electro pop song.
78. Lady Marmalade - G Flip
It’s a nice cover. The video of G Flip performing it though is really fun.
77. House Arrest - Sofi Tukker and Gorgon City
This song bangs pretty hard. I like a lot of Sofi Tukker have really been putting out some solid stuff.
76. Baby It’s You - London Grammar
This is a great track, that synth in the chorus is heavenly.
75. Photo ID - Remi Wolf
I do like this song but it reminds me of a track from the 80s or 90s and I can’t put my finger on what that track is.
74. Scream Drive Faster - LAUREL
When I first heard this I thought Ladyhawke was back in the mainstream. Little disappointed it wasn’t, but this slaps.
73. Don’t Need You - Genesis Owusu*
Possibly the best chorus of the year. Owusu has stepped up massively in the Australian Hip Hop scene.
72. Way Down - Ocean Alley
Ocean Alley have plateaued. ‘Lonely Diamond’ just felt like the band had become comfortable.
71. Obey - Bring Me The Horizon and YUNGBLUD
I just can’t take BMTH seriously anymore. They’re music has become so comically edgy.
70. Low - Chet Faker
Hey look, Nick Murphy has become Chet Faker again. Don’t know why he changes between the two when one is just slightly more soulful than the other, but he does release nice tunes.
69. Second - Hope D
I do like this female, Aussie version of Jamie T. It’s a really nice track. Also the number 69 is claimed by Hope D. haha.
68. Lie to Me - Vera Blue
I don’t know what it is exactly, but there’s something about Vera which just puts her on a different level than her counterparts. She’s just that consistently good.
67. Boss Bitch - Doja Cat
This track doesn’t get old for me. It’s so much fun, and Doja Cat owns it. Love it.
66. Fantasising - Skegss
This track really does have a very “Three Leaf Clover” vibe. I have enjoyed Skegss in the past but their new stuff hasn’t captured my attention really. Seems a bit run of the mill.
65. C’MON (feat. Travis Barker) - Amy Shark
I actually don’t mind this song, but why does it feature Travis Barker. It’s a piano ballad featuring a punk drummer, and he really doesn’t do that much. I’m confused, was he jealous of Mark Hoppus?
64. Soak Me In Bleach - The Amity Affliction
The song title reflects my thoughts when I hear that The Amity Affliction have released a new one. There are so many better Aussie metal bands out there.
63. Day & Age - Ball Park Music
BPM have a knack for writing amazing ballads. I wasn’t huge on their latest album, but tracks like this continue me having them in my good books.
62. Run - Joji
One of the best tracks Joji has released. A really mature song for the artist and a step in the right direction for him.
61. Pretty Grim - Ruby Fields
Ruby is good, but I feel she’s starting to release the same song over and over. Need something fresh.
60. Go (feat. Juice WRLD) - The Kid LAROI
Probably the strongest track by The Kid LAROI, but Juice WRLD outshines him just due to his vocal tone. He just sounds better.
59. Gimme Love - Joji
And that’s three for Joji. I really like how this song has two distinct sections and both are solid without overshadowing the other.
58. Fly Away - Tones and I
I still don’t get why Tones and I puts on that fake accent in her songs. It just detracts from what could be a nice pop song.
57. Sobercoaster - Beddy Rays
Really didn’t expect this to get so high. I’m happy though because it’s a really fun song.
56. On The Line - San Cisco
Tracks like this keep me invested in San Cisco. They can really release some brilliant stuff.
55. I Think You’re Great - Alex The Astronaut
The fine line between overly chessy and adorably optimistic is what Alex walks on with every track. I think this falls on the former side sadly.
54. Blue - Eiffel 65 (Flume Remix)
The fact that Flume puts so much of his identity into this remix is why Flume has been one of the most successful Aussie acts this past decade.
53. In Your Eyes - The Weeknd
If The Weeknd release ‘Blinding Lights’ a month later I’d believe that he would take out this countdown. He didn’t though and instead we are left with this solid track in the bottom 50.
52. The Glow - DMA’s
Why? Why did DMA’s have to get so poppy and generic. I loved their first two album, but I struggled to get through the third.
51. Your Love (Déjà Vu) - Glass Animals
Out of the three big hits the band had in 2020, this is the most underrated. There is so much going on here, yet it never feels muddled. Wavey Davey on fire here.
50. Nothing To Love About Love - Peking Duk and The Wombats
Although this is a nice song, there’s been so many 80s electro pop throwbacks recently that have been done better that this collab just fades into the background.
49. Wishing Well - Juice WRLD
This song is so beautiful and heart-breaking. Really shows why Juice WRLD became such a beloved artist so quickly.
48. Ain’t It Different (feat. AJ Tracey and Stormzy) - Headie One
This is a really cool collab. They use the Red Hot Chili Peppers sample so well and really flow so well with it that it feels almost effortless.
47. Animals - Architects
I like a lot about this track, but the chorus really hits another level. Feels cathartic to scream along to.
46. Pretty Lady - Tash Sultana
Was hoping Tash would move into a more psychedelic direction with their newer stuff, but this is still a fine track.
45. as long as you care - Ruel
A pretty by the books Ruel song, but he really does this style so well.
44. You & I - G Flip
Probably G Flips strongest release this year. The chorus has a lot of flavour.
43. together - Ziggy Alberts
Generic acoustic track by generic Byron Bay artist. He really took the cake this year for dumbest comparison, when he compared wearing a face mask to the holocaust. Thought he’d suffer a bit for it, but apparently his fanbase grew stronger.
42. WHATS POPPIN - Jack Harlow
Jack Harlow is just so much fun. He’s killing it, and WHATS POPPIN is proof of that. Keep the bangers coming Harlow.
41. I Still Dream About You - The Smith Street Band
I felt I was growing out of The Smith Street Band, their newer music just not resonating to me. Then they drop this and make me a big fan again.
40. Come & Go (with Marshmello) - Juice WRLD
Just that chorus. It is so enjoyable. He really was going places.
39. Righteous - Juice WRLD
A back to back, and from one of the more exciting songs on the album we get to one of the more sombre tracks. Everything from the guitar, the vocals, those synth notes. . . this track is just a perfect send off for the artist. R.I.P. Juice.
38. Parasite Eve - Bring Me The Horizon
This song is so unironically cringe and edgy that it somehow becomes ironically fun. It does the full circle.
37. SO DONE - The Kid LAROI
I do like The Kid LAROI, but his vocals on this, combined with the lyrics, just make him sound like a child chucking a temper tantrum. It does make me laugh though.
36. forget me too (feat. Halsey) - Machine Gun Kelly
If this song was released in the early 00s (where it belongs), it would’ve faded into oblivion. At least Halsey sounds pretty solid on her verse though.
35. Running Red Lights (feat. Rivers Cuomo & Pink Siifu) - The Avalanches*
My personal number one for the year. This song has that melancholic, nostalgic feel to it that just hits home every time. Also one of Cuomo’s strongest vocal performances.
34. Everybody Rise - Amy Shark
This song is fine. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it, but it’s fun to sing-a-long to.
33. Breathe Deeper - Tame Impala
One of the best tracks from The Slow Rush. I love that piano motif throughout, and the bass is so funky. That weird bridge section towards the end is also pretty slick.
32. Criminals - DMA’s
The real criminals are the ones who told DMA’s this was a good idea. I just can’t get around their new stuff. I miss ‘Hill’s End’ and ‘For Now’.
31. Reasons - San Cisco
Tracks like this keep me from becoming a full time fan of San Cisco. They can really release some average stuff.
30. Bagi-la-m Bargan (feat. Fred Leone) - Birdz
Powerful. Birdz really took it to another level here.
29. Dribble - Sycco
Although I find there’s a lot of similar stuff out there, I think Sycco does sound like an original voice in the Australian music scene. She’s killing it.
28. Straightfaced - Spacey Jane
Although there was a lot of good stuff on Spacey Jane’s debut album, I found it to be quite repetitive. This track was one of the ones that I found to fade into the background instead of standing out.
27. Under the Thunder - Skegss
I really want to like Skegss, they’ve released some great tunes in the past. But this just doesn’t do it for me. It’s just boring.
26. No Plans To Make Plans - Lime Cordiale
Everything that makes new The Rubens tracks so average is presented here on a Lime Cordiale track. Obnoxiously quirky.
25. Reality Check Please - Lime Cordiale
Hey back to back Lime Cordiale tracks. And another one of their weaker ones. ‘Addicted to the Sunshine’ did this chorus better.
24. Blue World - Mac Miller
Didn’t expect this to make it so high but so well deserved. This song slaps hard but still continues the tragic story that is presented on his posthumous album ‘Circles’.
23. Good News - Mac Miller*
Back to back Mac! To be honest, I am close to tears every time this track plays. If only the lyrics “there's a whole lot more for me waiting/I know maybe I'm too late, I could make it there some other time/Then I'll finally discover/That it ain't that bad” were told to Mac before his passing, because he did have so much more to offer. R.I.P. Mac.
22. Complicated - Eves Karydas
This song is so good. I’ve heard it that many times but it still hasn’t lost its shine. So damn good.
21. Energy - KLP and Stace Cadet
I was really hoping this would crack top 20. Probably the best Dance track of the year. Such a jam.
20. Addicted To The Sunshine - Lime Cordiale
Despite thinking that ‘14 Steps To A Better Living’ didn’t have many new tracks that were that good on it, this one is nice. It’s just a pleasantly nice song.
19. You Should Be Sad - Halsey
I really don’t like Pop Country music but I also find it hilarious that the genre cracked the top 20. ‘09 Taylor Swift would be proud.
18. Tangerine - Glass Animals
With Tik Tok exploding in 2020 I don’t get how this didn’t get adopted by someone on it. It’s so primed to get hyped on it.
17. Is It True - Tame Impala
I think Kevin Parker’s vocals on this are underwhelming, but that might just be because the instrumental slaps that hard. The rhythm section is so tight.
16. Screw Loose - Lime Cordiale
This sound is what Lime Cordiale do best. We need more dub influence and less elevator pop influence.
15. Skin - Spacey Jane
No matter what you think about Spacey Jane, they sure do make some emotional tracks. One of the most powerful songs on Sunlight.
14. Tombstone - Ocean Alley
The verses are average and pretty bland but the chorus is amazing. Just don’t think the album resonated with me too much, and Tombstone is another mixed track off it.
13. Rockstar - Mallrat
Possibly Mallrat’s best song yet. Her laid back, relaxed style mixed with the low-fi production really meshes well.
12. Get on the Beers (feat. Dan Andrews) - Mashd N Kutcher
I’m not going to pretend this is my style, but the way this has resonated with Australians during lockdown last year makes the track way smarter than it deserves to be. It’s both ironically and unironically good.
11. On Our Own - Lime Cordiale
I’m happy the three best new tracks of Lime Cordiale’s debut were the highest placing in this countdown. This really is a nice song.
10. Therefore I Am - Billie Eilish
Not my favourite songs from Billie but she continues to be consistently good. The production on this is immense as well.
9. I’m Good? - Hilltop Hoods
I wish old school Hilltop could hear this so could prevent themselves every going this direction. Aussie Hip Pop is not a good genre. This is one of their worst tracks yet.
8. Sending Me Ur Loving - The Jungle Giants*
This song has so much flavour too it. It’s so funky and fun and the production is so tight. Also the guitar work is underrated here, not doing much but adding that icing on the cake.
7. Hyperfine - G Flip
Every time I hear this track (and I’ve heard it a lot) I completely forget about it a couple minutes later. G Flip is good, but this is forgettable.
6. WAP (feat. Megan Thee Stallion) - Cardi B
I understand if this isn’t your style, but I love it. I don’t think there’s ever been a song with so many quotable moments. Every line makes a statement that will get in your head. My personal favourite? “ I let him taste it, now he diabetic”.
5. Lost In Yesterday - Tame Impala
There’s a lot of songs on ‘The Slow Rush’ I like, but Lost In Yesterday I’ve always found kinda boring. It feels a little uninspired. Surprised that this was the album’s big hit.
4. Cherub - Ball Park Music*
BPM have released some great music over the decade but I think this is their best yet. It’s beautiful, emotional and has a fantastic, cathartic breakdown at the end. I love a good build up.
3. The Difference (feat. Toro y Moi) - Flume*
Everything about this track is why Flume has been so great for so long. This track is great for any situation. If I’m partying, I play it. If I’m relaxing, I play it. If I’m getting pumped up, I play it. If I’m sad, I play it. Flexibility matters.
2. Booster Seat - Spacey Jane
OHHH-OH-OHHHHHHHH AND IT FEELS LIKE THAT AGAIN! One of the best sing-a-long tracks of the year, yet massively emotional. Like damn this song is rough.
1. Heat Waves - Glass Animals*
If I had one word to express how I feel about this winning I would say “deserved”. Not many tracks were as perfect for 2020 as this one. Glass Animals love writing absolute bangers with emotional cores and this one is one of their strongest tracks. Glass Animals just continue to outdo themselves.
That’s it for now, gonna maybe start posting again. I dunno. See how I feel. Ta-ta.

Song Tag
Song game!
Tagged by @bae-minseung
Thanks for tagging me, luv!
Rule: You can only repeat one artist and song only one time, so we can all kind of spread new 🎶to the people we tag. Try to listen to at least one of the song’s people rec here.
1. Song you 💛ed the first time you listened to and never got tired of?
Universe by Minhyun
When ‘Universe’ came out on April 3rd of 2019, I already knew it was going to become one of my favorite songs ever. How did I know that? I can’t really say. The first note tickled my ear and made me feel fuzzy inside, but also a little sad. I don’t know if there’s anyone else out there that likes standing in the rain and feeling it trickle down your cheeks, but it felt like that—only better. It felt like the cold water was warm, and instead of it being clear, it was dye and it was coloring me beautifully. That song felt like first love to me. Thrilling and beautiful, but also a little heart-wrenching and sorrowful. I think that’s why I love it so much, and still love it to this day. I can always go back to that song to fill me with the color that I lack. In the words of Minhyun: “You have to be happy, my universe”.
2. One song you 😭 every time you listen or makes you emotional?
The Last by Agust D
‘The Last’ is such a painfully honest song, and I admire that honesty. Since BTS debuted in 2013, I remember looking at Min Yoongi through the eyes of a relatively thoughtless nine-year-old and thinking, “What kind of person are you? Who are you?” I thought it was a funny question, at the time. I knew who he was. He was Min Yoongi—Suga from BTS. He was a cool Korean guy I saw on the internet. Though, as time went by and I got older, I realize it.
“You’re me.”
“You’re older than me, and we’re different people.”
“But that doesn’t matter.”
“You’re me in another body.”
When I came to that realization, I cried for hours without making any noise. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I couldn’t. Up until that point, I was someone who locked her door and screamed until she felt better, but at that time, I realized that it felt better to scream in my head, because then I could do it whenever I needed to. I could be in a room full of people, and I could still be screaming. For whatever reason, I felt comforted by that. I always used to scream and throw tantrums so that people would hear me. So they would know what I was thinking, and what I did or didn’t like. I needed to be heard; I desired it. But after coming to my ‘realization’, I didn’t need to scream to be heard anymore, because there was already someone out there that understood me.
I’m incredibly blessed that ‘The Last’ came out around that time that I developed my ‘Yoongi-ness’, for lack of better term that doesn’t sound too over-dramatic. I’ve never been depressed—I’ve just been really sad or couldn’t feel anything at all, but I’ve felt less really-sad (or at least more comfortable with my really sad), because I knew that I could come back to this song and feel like someone understood.
And that made me happy. That’s one reason why I’m so happy now.
He understood me without hearing a word I said, knowing my face, or knowing my name. Without knowing of my existence, I felt treasured and that’s why ‘The Last’ is always the song that can make me emotional/cry.
3. One song that always makes you happy/😁?
Get Cool by Stray Kids
I have no reason for this whatsoever. I think it’s just the way they sing it or the meaning behind the lyrics, but I always feel cheered up when I listen to this song. Like nothing can bring me down and I can just be unashamed about how freakin’ happy I am.
4. One song you would dedicate to your best friend and/or family?
P.O.P (Piece of Peace) by J-hope
I think this one is pretty self explanatory. If I care for someone, I want to be their strength and their light. I want to make their dreams brighter and their nightmares disappear. I want to be a safe place for them. Therefore! Piece of Peace.
5. One song with production (the sounds, the beat, the mood) you 😍?
Manitto by Villain
This song!! This song always makes me feel like I’m in an MV, ‘cause no matter where you are, it somehow fits every. Single. Situation. It makes me feel like a suave criminal that walks by people on the street and everyone’s just like, “Daaaaaamn, is that a snack? ‘Cause all of a sudden, I’m hungry”. I always feel 50% more confident once I listen to this song. I’m not someone who swings their hips when they walk, but Manitto has that effect on me. It unlocks my inner zest. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it and it’s been stuck in my ear eternally ever since. The vibe, the mood, the production—all of it is outstanding and totally underrated. Plus, Villain is probably one of my biggest vocal inspirations. I don’t necessarily follow his style (mostly because I don’t think I’m capable of his abilities), but I admire him so much because he’s always had his own voice color that is just incomparable.
6. One song with perfect, amazing, outstanding lyrics?
My New World by CIX
Oh my goshhhhhhh, where to start with this one? There’s nothing I don’t love about this song, particularly the lyrics. Everything from Yonghee’s falsetto to Seunghun’s power to BX’s and Hyunsuk’s shared rap part to Jinyoung’s “heyyyy~” (only those that have listened to it will understand)—it always hits me in a strong, powerful way. It’s a song all about carrying your light along with your darkness, and that’s always a lesson I’m try to teach myself every single day. I think one of my favorite lines is: “Take the bumpy road”, because it reminds me of something I told myself once. I was sitting on my bed at 4:30 in the morning, watching the sunrise. I was in a really nostalgic mood and I was alone in the house, so I just sighed, laid down and started crying for no reason, telling myself, “It’s hard to be a good person”. I think ‘My New World’ has become a source of strength for me, because it makes me feel like I’m more capable of going through the struggles of trying to be the best version of myself.
7. One song that you would recommend to anyone?
go, just go by eli
I think if you listen to it, you’ll find out what I mean without me even having to say much. I remember putting this on my friend’s ‘Calm Down and Chill’ playlist and then that same day, he called me and said, “What the heck is this?” and I was like, “...what?”. He explained to me that he meant the song, but I didn’t understand why he was so adamant about it until he said, “You can’t put stuff like that on my playlists. It’s too beautiful and it makes me cry”. I think that’s pretty powerful.
8. One song you don’t understand why you like so much but you do anyway?
BLACKWHITE by CORBYN
Corbyn (ex member of 24k) is a little-known self-producing soloist under 28Laboratory and BLACKWHITE is my favorite song by him. I love the classy-old-film vibe it has, despite it being a hip-hop song with hard rap. I’m not sure why I like, but I think it has something to do with how clever and almost punny the lyrics are. Not to mention, I always gets chills whenever he says, “Y’all don’t amaze me”. Another thing that probably helps in adding to my love for this track is that his producing feels familiar to me since he produced a lot of my favorite 24k songs, like Super Fly and Bonnie N’ Clyde.
9. One song that you think people in general wouldn’t like, but you do?
TOP Gang by MCND
I will openly admit that this is a genera plenty people aren’t that into—hip-hop with rap-heavy vocals and a raw production quality—but I happen to love this song. Not only does it impress me that all the members are so young (Win has been my baby since Under19), but also because the members took part in the writing and producing of the song. Castle J helped in producing it, and he wrote the lyrics for it, along with Win and BIC. They really have so much talent and they put so much effort into it, and I find the way they structured their rhyming to be very addictive. I find myself going back to listen to it because it puts me in that “I can do anything” kind of mood.
10. One song people normally like and you don’t like or hate?
Cheerleader by OMI
...I don’t have much to say about this one, I just don’t like it. I’m not a very social person, but I remember the year that this was REALLY popular was probably my busiest year yet, so I was out all the time, and it was playing EVERYWHERE. Going to the pool with my friends? It’s playing. Dinner with my family? It’s playing. Literally just shopping for some new underwear? (TMI, I know) Yup, that’s right. It’s playing. I just couldn’t stand it by the end of the year. 😂
11. One song you would call a masterpiece?
Saturn by Sleeping At Last
‘Saturn’ is the one song I come back to over and over again. It makes me happy, it makes me cry, it makes me thoughtful and pensive. It’s everything that I would consider a ‘masterpiece’. The beginning part with the violins and the piano always reminds me of my sister and I, because that’s always been out thing. I play piano, she plays violin. For both of us, music is our first love. My sister’s lost her first love because life is busy and she’s always working and stressed, but I’m fighting tooth and nail to hold onto it and never let go, because to me, music is everything. It brings me to the stars, which are too far away for me to physically touch. It can make me feel when I’m numb, it can make me happy when all I’ve done is cry, and it makes me realize over and over again that life is literally the best thing ever. We’d have nothing without life, and music makes that apparent to me—especially this song.
12. One song you recently (30 days max) discovered and really liked it?
I’m not okay by Deadfish
I like songs that give me an atmosphere, and this song definitely does just that. It feels like brutal honesty cutting into my skin while I’m drowning in my backyard pool, and the chlorine is seeping into my wounds and it just hurts, but in such a nice way. It feels like the loneliness gets a little bit less lonely by the end of the song, and it definitely lessens your sense of self-pity, because you realize other people feel the same as you, if not worse.
13. One song you listen to to get pumped like you wanna tear down the government or something?
HIT by Seventeen
Hit fills me with a sense of excitement and hype unlike any other. Basically, everything about it—the beat, rhythm, lyrics, bass-drop, synth, the fanchant—gets me absolutely hyped up. I can’t sit still whenever I’m listening to it, and I always (ALWAYS) sing along. If I’m sitting, I’m doing this weird shoulder and waist dance. If I’m standing, I’m jumping up and down higher than a volleyball player. It’s even worse when I’m in the mood for dancing, ‘cause then I attempt the choreography, but only in the comfort of solitude, ‘cause oh my gosh, there’s some embarrassing moments. This one definitely is heightened by the fact that I’m going to a Seventeen concert in less than a week.
.

Thanks again for tagging me, luv! I had a lot of fun doing it, as you know I always like to share my music with anyone that’ll listen. Anyway! I’ll tag my peeps now.

@lostmyshame (I’m curious what you’d say. You intrigue me. 👍)

Fantastic Beasts Characters As Classical Pieces
What if you could describe the characters of Fantastic Beasts with one Classical Piece?
Newt Scamander: “American”-Allegro Ma Non Troppo by Antonín Dvořák: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JocDYVUb4kE
This particular tune was composed when Dvorak was abroad in America, working for a conservatory. ‘The American Quartet’ was composed during Dvorak’s stay in Spillville, Iowa, which he composed with great inspirations from contemporary Africa-American melodies, Native American tunes and even a songbird called “the red eyed vireo” that kept pestering him while he was composing. This reminds me of Newt’s worldwide voyages and him working on his book on his journey, inspired by people and magical beasts he sees. The piece speaks with a joy of seeing something new, the joys of travelling, meeting and being influenced by new people which is the essence of Newt’s character.
Tumblr media
Porpentina Goldstein: La Campanella, Grandes études de Paganini, by Franz Liszt. : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1Dvg2MxQn8
“La Campanella” or “The little bell” is called one of the difficult, most intricate piece on the piano to play. However, in it’s trilling and high notes it exudes an elegance that is both delicate, intimidating and fast. Tina Goldstein is characterized as a short fused level-headed personality. She was described as being "grounded."She was naturally ambitious, and had a desire to stand up for what was right. Her femininity is underrated, especially when she is placed beside Leta or Queenie. However, her femininity is most beautifully appreciated by Newt: the golden traces of her seen through the tracking spell, her emotional expressions when she was bidding Newt goodbye, her pouting at Newt’s “engagement”, all this highlight her unique femininity. This is what the La Campanella will capture.

Queenie Goldstein : Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, By Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky, Nutcracker Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV1qLYukTH8
From the moment Queenie entered the screen she filled my mind with a mystrey and alarm. She was almost ethereal and unreal sometimes and it is sometimes hard to tell what she is thinking when she is smiling and reading about you. That creepy-ethereal sweetness is evoked by the piece ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’. Feminine yet intimidating, this piece reminds me of Queenie. The character is both popular as a good and benevolent figure, also as a horror figure. ‘Sugar Plum’ is not a real fruit, but candied plum, and what she is seen making on screen for the first time? Strudel.

 Jacob Kowalski: Miroirs (mvt: IV "Alborada del gracioso") by Maurice Ravel : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCKDG7w2S9c
Ravel’s ‘Miroir’ is a five-movement suite for solo piano written by French composer Maurice Ravel between 1904 and 1905. It was dedicated to his artist friends in Les Apaches (”hooligans”), who identified themselves as Avant-garde, and artistic outcast. Jacob as a non-magic folk, wants to grow as a person: from a dull employee of a canning factory to an artist of baking. From a wizard’s perspective he is a “hooligan”, in a sense: he is a no-maj who must be excluded. He is an outcast, but he celebrates it, a spirit that Ravel captures in the ‘Miroir’. The fourth movement Alborada del gracioso is called “The Jester’s Aubade” or the ‘Morning Love song of a Clown’. An Aubade laments on the lovers separating at daybreak. It can also be identified with his unfortunate separation with Queenie.

Niffler: Danse Boheme by Georges Bizet, Carmen:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P1dquJE7mQ
Gypsies were known to nick things in the past, and they are very mischievous and caused troubles for other non-gypsies. These are also the characteristics of niffler. They are troublemakers, and they pursue after shiny objects and treasures and pinches them for their own fun. Bizet’s Danse Boheme starts with light woodwinds with small movements which later becomes grands with frequent tremolo and hectic and fast tunes on the strings. This reminds me of the niffler’s small sneaky antics and how they usually get out of hand and makes things out of control.

Pickett:  Dance of the Reed Flutes, by Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky, Nutcracker suit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h94BdxnheeM
Also known as the Marzipan song, the Reed-Flute song is a piece predominated by wind instruments. The piece also reminds be of birds chirping and woodland, which is considered as the seat of the Bowtruckles. The piece is very cheerful and innocent, like the bowtruckle and has a hint of mischief.

Theseus Scamander: Violin Concerto in D Major, Allegro Moderato, By Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNmgDEUdKlw (for convenience skip to timestamp 6:17)
Tchaikovsky composed it in  Clarens, a Swiss resort on the shores of Lake Geneva, where Tchaikovsky had gone to recover from the depression brought on by his disastrous marriage to Antonina Miliukova. The concerto was swiftly composed and Tchaikovsky wouldn’t be able to complete it without the help of his composing pupil Iosif Kotek. However Kotek later refuses to play the concerto, believing that it would damage his reputation, which caused a breach between him and his tutor. Theseus is plagued too, by the death of his fiancee, Leta Lestrange, and finds consolation by his younger brother Newt’s support. The on-and-off relationship between him and Newt reminds me of Kotek and Tchaikovsky(despite the fact that the latter two had some homosexual tension between them). The overall melody is elegant yet majestic, tender but firm and noble with intricate notes, which all together sums up Theseus’ character and magical abilities. And let’s not forget his worldwide popularity and how this concerto (despite its failures in the initial receptions) rose to the position as one of the four greatest violin concertos in the world.

Seraphina Piquery: Bolero, Maurice Ravel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r30D3SW4OVw
Boléro is a one-movement orchestral piece by Maurice Ravel. This piece begins with a soft beating of snare drums and repeats the same melody over and over again, but each time it includes a different instrument and gradually becomes grand. The melody includes the dynamics of every possible instruments in the orchestra. Seraphina is a martial heroine and an apt leader who utilities every wizard’s power in the ministry, that makes her power formidable. The meticulously crafted melody also expresses Seraphina’s calculating nature.

Albus Dumbledore: Erlkönig By Franz Schubert.(instrumental by David Garrett) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1uWr0p90EQ
Schubert’s Erlkonig is an aria that uses the lyrics from Goethe’s poem from the same name. Erlkonig or the “Elf King” is about a father and son riding through the forest in the night. The boy hears whispers and sees the trainy veil of the Elf King floating through the air, who whispers to follow him. However the father sees nothing. When the duo reach the farm, the boy is found dead. This symbolizes that man is always flying away from death, but no matter how hard he tries death will get to him at the end. Dumbledore is a private person who is trying his hard to conceal and outrun his past, but it always gets tangled in the end.

Gellert Grindlewald:  Don Giovanni! A cenar teco , by Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart, Opera : Don Giovanni. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciZNyQNzM7I
In the Opera, the Commendator was an old man, Killed by Don Giovanni, who wished to win the old man’s daughter Dona Ana. Thus he came back as a spirit to drag Don Giovanni in hell. It is called one of the scariest songs by Mozart, and the process in while Commendator drew Don Giovanni into hell with fire and a legion of Demons reminds me of Grindelwald conquering his enemies and destroying them completely. Both of the characters were hateful, vengeful and absolutist, although Grindelwald cannot be justified like the Commendator, who rage was justified (because his daughter was snatched by a sketchy playboy). However, Grindelwald must think he is right and have thought about muggles like that!!

Credence Barebone: Swan Lake Op 20 introduction By Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky, Ballet: Swan Lake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhYnHXpDyUI
Credence strongly reminds me of the Odette/Odille Complex from Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Swan Lake. The ballet ends with a pessimistic note, in the sense that the pure and virginal white swan dies and the seductive and evil black swan wins. Up till the end of the Second Franchise, we saw that Grindelwald was able to draw Credence towards him, and I believe Rowling is aiming for a classic pathetic end for Credence, as “the innocent that gone bad” collateral. Ominous, haunting, breathtaking and beautiful, the opening of Swan Lake portrays the ravishment of Odette by an evil magician Rothbart. Credence has been manhandled by his adoptive mother and emotionally abused by Grindelwald and his journey from innocent to a dark entity is surely very Swan-Lake like.

Leta Lestrange: Declaration of Love by Alfred Schnittke, A Fairytale of Wandering :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAVVXff_4BM
Originally composed for the soviet dark fantasy film A Story of Voyage (1983), Declaration of Love has been getting the position of classical music. The story of the film traces the journey of two orphan children, brother and sister separated at birth. However when they two meet in the adulthood the brother has become evil and violent. Although they reach a happy ending, but their encounter is as charged as Leta-Mustafa (who is Leta’s half brother from the same mother) encounter. It could also possibly indicate Leta’s encounter with Credence who was almost professed as Corvus Lestrange. The piece is haunting, beautiful and Schnittke’s signature discords lurking about throughout the symphony makes the piece perfect for Leta.
Tumblr media
Nicolas Flamel : Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity, By Gustav Holst, The Planets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz0b4STz1lo
Flamel was a strong positive force in the film ‘Crimes of Grindelwald’. Unlike Dumbledore, who is more ‘hovering over and watching’ rather than participating in action (except in rare cases), Flamel’s presence and entrance fills the people around him with hope. Holst’s ‘Jupiter’ has a similar effect. In Indian Astrology ‘Jupiter’ is called the eldest, and ‘Adviser of Heaven’ who counsels with gods and protects the mortals from fatality and evil. Flamel’s presence was something like that.

Nagini: The Aquarium By Camille Saint Saens, from Le Carnival des animaux.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVpl-RNzdE4
Saint Saens’ Aquarium, is a doleful piece that evokes the image of the dimly lit, and often creepy aquarium. This so called aquarium is not visited at the daytime when the people are bustling, it is visited during the nighttime when there are no people. The Snake, is a creature that is fluid, smooth and meandered like water. This piece not only reminds me of an abandoned carnival, a place where Nagini belonged as a ‘freak’, but also a dimly lit, damp space where a snake inhabits.

yet another very necessary taehyung rant
i’m back! before i start i’d like to say i appreciate you all so much for the comments and such, even the ones who claim that tae isn’t underrated (begone thots), you motivate my procrastinating ass. you guys don’t need to thank me though i’m just doing the lord’s work. now i have things to talk about so let’s get started!
if you’re new to these posts then this part 3 of what has kind of become a series (?), where i go on rants defending taehyung and explain why he’s kind of underrated. contrary to popular belief; as you’re about to see, boi needs it.
now i’m sorry, but before everything i really want to talk about this man and his precious dog!!
Tumblr media
RIGHT MY DUDE TAEHYUNG DIDN’T JUST GET ANY DOG, HE GOT A FOSTER. LET’S PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT. he even asked the guy how to be a good dog owner, the same guy went on to say he didn’t believe he and tae were the same species lmao.
moving on to the sad shit
hate
i will never shut up about this. the popular members get hate too. honestly everyone will go on about how the hyung line members get hate (totally fair), but nobody wants to talk about the shit the maknaes have to deal with cause they’re popular. i’ve never seen someone as grossly sexualised as jimin is, i’ve seen many a horror. jk gets so much hate for having a lot of lines, as if it isn’t tiring and stressful for him. and honestly tae just can’t fucking breathe without getting berated for it. here’s a list of things he’s gotten hate for:
-suggesting a movie with a sex scene (which made him stop his film reccs)
-suggesting a song with sexual lyrics
-posting work from his favourite photography which contained nudity
fun fact; taehyung is an a d u l t, what a concept.
-showing yeontan in jin’s vlive
-saying older brothers should care for their little sisters (they said he’s sexist)
-landing an acting role before jin
-winning face of 2017
some jk stans were mad cause jk got more likes on instagram (if you didn’t know the nominees’ pictures were posted on an insta account and people thought they were meant to vote for who they wanted to win.) jk had gotten more votes on his picture so people were mad that tae won, but apparently it’s not the case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tldr; despite him being the most beautiful creature on this sad earth, it’s not just about visuals and it’s a big deal that he got chosen
general sadness
i’ll say this again. even though everyone thinks tae stans showing concern is twelve year olds trying to stir up drama, we have good reason to do so.
let’s take a moment to talk about stigma, the lyrics are already ambiguous and seemingly sad. this is what he said about it:
"stigma is about hurting. when i started creating it i wanted it to be about being cut over and over again. i wanted army to feel my hurting? in mvs I’m shown as a person who’s hurt, but it hurts so much that i become someone who enjoys that pain.”
and even that one time taehyung started crying when reading his letter to jimin on bon voyage S2, he started crying and talking about jimin being there for him when he was “crying in the bathroom”  uhh c h i l d
remember when the members jumped on tae to open up to them? the way they spoke...you can tell he had gone through something and it breaks my heart honestly, but it seems the members are caring for him.
visuals
his visuals have gotten him far and this is just a fact. he must feel like his only significance in the group is being a visual. honestly when members are being acknowledged for things and it comes to him they’ll always say something like ‘thx for not being ugli lol’.
i know this is a thing in kpop i guess but it’s as if he’s just there to look pretty and...growl? and what else? oh yes! be lol so random xd. this really pisses me off cause even in old interviews namjoon would introduce him as ‘the member responsible for 4d charms’ and you’d just see his expression drop immediately.
don’t get me wrong, it’s just a fact that he’s a popular bias cause of his looks, that’s just the way it is and i know it. we as people sub-consciously show bias towards people we find attractive in everyday situations. i’m pretty sure if he weren’t so stunning some people would probably bash him for his ‘alien behaviour’ rather than be like ‘oh ahaha tae-oppa is so cute l o l xd’ or some other cringy shit.
anyway, he has a lot of fans because of his appearance, who probably think they’re the biggest stan just cause they’ve heard stigma like four times. maybe they watch some ‘taehyung extra compilations’ now and then, but they don’t actually know shit about him andng;sd’#;l#fdfd
for those that don’t know, he had originally accompanied a friend to the auditions and had no plans to audition himself. he was spotted by an employee who told him he had to audition because he was so good-looking. his looks definitely got him where he is, i imagine it makes him feel like his only significant feature is the fact that he’s pretty. a lot of people have nothing good to say about him not regarding his looks/behavior.
if you get really deep into it, i think he feels like his visuals are the only reason he’s loved by fans at all. although he doesn’t do it anymore, i’m pretty sure he used to exaggerate his attitude so that people would like him. i know this feeling all too well myself and while i obviously can’t pin point what’s going on in that pretty lil head of his, i think i’ve got an idea. you’re really just ‘weird’ and you try to pass it off as quirky then you’re like ‘oh you like this?’ so you keep acting that way, afraid you’ll stop being interesting. it was brought to my attention that people are actually dropping him cause he’s become more quiet recently :(.
Tumblr media
can i ask why? when taehyung is so beautiful inside and out, he’s definitely got flaws we all do, but while he isn’t perfect there’s just something so unique about him. he’s so clever sometimes yet he can have those dumb moments like forgetting what year it is, he seems like he’s just a cutie yet he’s so mysterious and vague. he’s this beautiful mess of self-contradictions and i love him for it, my favourite art hoe. i found a tae personality-analysis here on tumblr and it was an enjoyable read, op says they had a hard time with his mysterious ass haha
now let’s talk about tae being a golden maknae (hear me out!)
i got this comment
Tumblr media
hmm i didn’t know that he auditioned as a rapper. [some of the members really came in with little to no experience in their field though, isn’t that impressive?] yeah that’s true, like i’ve said this before but tae is a golden maknae, he can rap okay? it only sounds weird cause we’re not used to it. even in the table room skit they did that freestyle rap and tae was really good, i’ve read that yoongi himself was really impressed with him!!
and he can dance pretty well too um why isn’t he dance line ???
tae’s been underrated since the start, he was even hidden at the start as he was a ‘secret weapon’, for what? surprise surprise; his looks :o i’m pretty sure he knows this, and it all must add more to the probable mixed feelings he has regarding his role in the group.
singing
please talk about his beautiful deep voice, i didn’t even like deep voices until he came around. also let’s appreciate the fact that he came in with no experience and apparently originally auditioned as a rapper?
C R Y S T A L S N O W though I mean oh my god.
my friend once said; ‘i cry every night at taehyung’s wasted potential’ ( @n-uee what’s good?) which is too accurate. i’ve said pretty much all i needed to say on this subject in the previous part. still though acknowledging his high note in stigma isn’t enough, please he is finally not being wasted on growling anymore talk about it
yeah uh finally finished i’ve been dragging this on and editing it for months lmao i’m such a procrastinator. anyway as i said he’s not just a pretty face and there is so much more underneath the surface. i wish tae well and await his next cover!
part 1 , part 2
ofcourse  none of these posts are complete without some pictures, so have taehyung with dogs aka my favourite concept in the world:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway he’s one of the only good things in my life in this god awful world and i purple him bye.

After a summer full of traveling and other activities, it’s time to get back to writing more regularly.  Here in northern Alabama, it’s a dreary, gray day with lots of rain, which made me want to put a record on that was a solid swinger but in a mellow groove.  Enter the dependable Billy Taylor.
The Music
https://raggywaltz.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/theres-a-small-hotel.wav The Tune:  “There’s A Small Hotel”
Recorded:  25 October and 16-17 December 1957 in New York City
Personnel:
Billy Taylor-  Piano
Earl May-  Bass
Ed Thigpen-  Drums
Billy Taylor led one of the tastiest, most consistently swinging piano trios around during his heyday, and this album is a solid example of that.  With the album’s title making a big to-do about a new trio, you’d think that Taylor’s group was brand new.  And you’d be wrong.  Bassist Earl May had been with Taylor since the early 1950’s and Ed Thigpen came aboard in 1956, a year before this album was recorded.  While they were both with Taylor prior to this album, this was the first time Thigpen played with Taylor in the context of just a trio, hence the specificity of the title.  At any rate, the music on the album is top-rate and relaxed, with Thigpen sticking almost exclusively to brushes and the tempos breezy and loose.  Taylor’s fluid piano technique is on full display, as well as his skill for using dense chords but still keeping things light and moving.
“There’s A Small Hotel” is an old Rogers and Hart song from the 1930’s that was briefly popular during the 50’s and 60’s but has since fallen out of fashion (although thanks to another jazz album with this song on it, I laughed when the tv show ‘Mad Men’ made not one but two references to this song).  Normally played as an up-tempo romp, Taylor opts for a more understated rendition, trading a brisk walk for an easy strut.  It’s a successful performance, and has some of those nice chords during a particularly strutting chorus.  Perfect music for a rainy Sunday afternoon.
The rest of the music is in much of the same vein.  The album opener, “There Will Never Be Another You”, gives Thigpen a chance to trade some fours with Taylor, while Thigpen gets the full spotlight for the last number, a Taylor original named “Titoro”.  The latter tune is mostly an extended malleted drum solo, but the melody, chord changes, and bass line is catchy and head-bobbing, which kinda makes me wish Taylor had soloed on it a bit longer.  “Sounds In The Night” is an interesting composition by Taylor that begins in an abstract, dark mood before moving into a blues.  Bassist Earl May gets a few choruses to solo before Taylor’s piano returns for a few stomping choruses of blues and then takes the tune out.  All in all, a solid album from one of the more underrated pianists of jazz’s Golden Age.
I’ve been hip to Billy Taylor for years, but this is the first album of his that I’ve added to my record collection (heck, to my entire music library).  I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more of his music, though.  I’ve been sleeping on him and his music for too long!
The Cover
Tumblr media
Raggy Waltz Rating:  C+
First of all, let me say that I actually really like this album’s cover art.  A full-color shot in the 1950’s is always neat, and the composition of the picture is kinda cool.  So why a C+?  Well, it’s what’s going on between the gentlemen.  Actually it’s rather funny.  Ed Thigpen needed a light, so Earl May, being a good friend and band mate, obliges him and offers him a lit match.  The thing is, he has to reach across the leader to accomplish this.  Billy Taylor doesn’t look too enthused about the whole thing.
“Really, fellas?  In the middle of the photo shoot?”
“Do you have to lean over me like that, Earl?”
“You’re an Earl, not the Duke.  Chill, bro.”
“This is coming out of your next check, pal…”
The awkward-yet-amusing posing of the guys aside, the picture has a kind of staid hipness to it.  The matching earl gray suits (ok, I’ll stop with the earl puns) with matching ties, socks, and shoes give off a square vibe, yet the parted haircuts, Taylor’s horn-rim glasses, and the cigarettes lend the picture a degree of cool kitsch.  It’s like finding out your physics professor plays jazz in a nightclub after class.  He’s still a physics professor, but, like, a cool one.  Thus, we arrive at staid hipness.  Billy Taylor always gave this vibe off, since he perpetually looked like a college professor, did a lot of teaching (both in the classroom and on television), yet was one swinging piano player, equally at home in a smokey club.
The composition of the cover art is fantastic.  The photograph leaves plenty of room above the band members for the album title and info and the information is printed in an unobstructive and uncluttered manner, making for a clean design.  Printing the names of the guys directly below them in white is a nice touch, too.  Fantastic job, Fran Scott.  Other than the poses, you did great!
The Back
Tumblr media
Fellow jazz pianist Marian McPartland wrote some glowing liner notes for the album that are also refreshingly focused on the music on the album itself and not a scholarly essay on the polemics of jazz as art, blah blah blah.  Mrs. McPartland provides insight into the music from the perspective of both a fan and a contemporary.  The design on the back is rather aesthetically pleasing.  A young Creed Taylor produced the album, years away from his fame in the record business.
The Vinyl
It’s always funny to see all the different ways record companies back in the day described their high fidelity sound.  Some had ‘Orthophonic’, others had ‘Stereo Odyssey’, but nobody had ABC-Paramount’s ‘Full-color Fidelity’.  Which, when you think about it, isn’t a bad way to describe rich sound.  This particular record is a first-pressing in mono, with a clear and severe deep-groove.  The blackish labels are in great condition, but as I discovered when I removed an old sticker on one of the labels, the original color was a deeper black.  The vinyl plays through without any skipping, but Full-color Fidelity it is not.  This being a record put out by the almighty studios of ABC, I would’ve thought that the sound really would be full-color and 3-D.  Nope.  It’s not terrible, though.  There’s a medium-light ‘snap-crackle-pop’ factor that doesn’t quite overpower the music, but is noticeable.  I personally don’t mind, as the fidelity tends to be pretty good in spite of that.  All in all, a pleasant listening experience for a quiet afternoon.
The Place of Acquisition
In between travels, I made a trip with a friend of mine to the local record store on a whim.  She wasn’t a record fiend like myself, but with curious amusement, she followed me into the store.  I didn’t expect to find much, but the record store had just been gifted with some new arrivals, and among the ‘new’ records was this album.  My friend thought the cover was “lame, but in a cool way”, and I thought it was awesome finding a Billy Taylor album in the wild in decent condition, so I grabbed it.  Like I mentioned earlier, Billy Taylor is undeservedly underrated, which is a shame.  But every cloud has a silver lining, and in this case, Taylor’s underrated status means his records are low on the collectivity charts, which translates to extremely affordable records.  Hopefully, it stays that way until I find more of his albums!
An underrated but consistently swinging pianist, Billy Taylor is the perfect answer to a rainy afternoon. The New Billy Taylor Trio // Billy Taylor (ABC-Paramount ABC 226) After a summer full of traveling and other activities, it's time to get back to writing more regularly.

Kalafina Bingo Challenge - my predictions
My own challenge, so I need to do it, right? >D Also, other people, participate please :D To those who don’t have a Tumblr account, go ahead and post your predictions as an ASK to me, I will post it for you :)
HERE is the original post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, I think the most difficult part is that we don’t know HOW MANY of the songs that fans voted for are actually being used. I say it will be the “Top 10″ because if, for example, they went with the Top 20 of the poll, they might end up with the same setlist as 9+ONE or ballads only. But since we know what kinds of musicians will participate (aka flute and accordion girls), that won’t happen. So they will at least determine part of the setlist. Then again, I think they will resort to songs that haven’t been performed so often in the past, otherwise it just might turn into another Arena Live or 9+ONE.
Oblivious Their debut song, if it doesn‘t come up then what will?
Hyakka Ryouran Their most recent song and the only one that hasn’t been performed live yet - in a recording and moreover in its original version.
Märchen Same as “Hyakka Ryouran”, more or less. Yes, it appeared in 9+ONE, but I say it will come again in its actual version with the flute.
* Usumurasaki Ah, one of my absolute favorite songs, therefore I voted for it. It’s been only performed once and... well, actually I can’t think of a reason why this should be performed as I don’t think people voted for it, but I really want it xD
* Koibito no Mukashigatari no yuugure no Same as “Usumurasaki”. But why not, it would make a great intro song of a second act or enchore (I doubt it would be the starting song, too much like Far on the Water Live).
Hikari no senritsu I’m missing flute songs. And this being one of their popular songs, hell why not.
Serenato THIS NEEDS TO BE PERFORMED!! PLEASE!! I want to hear that one because Kalafina’s voices have changed so much over the past 10 years and there is just no way that this will be like that one performance we have a recording of. Especially Hikaru. And I desperately want to know what they would make out of “Serenato” nowadays as a new interpretation.
Ongaku To be honest, I don’t want “Ongaku”. It‘s an awesome, upbeat song but it’s just too overplayed. I hope they go with “Identify”, “One Light” or “Progressive” instead but it’s still kinda hard to believe that it won’t come up.
Kantankatan Again, we haven’t seen this live yet (in its original version) and being one of their most recent and very beautiful songs, I’m almost 100% sure it will be performed. Please.
Monochrome The accordion needs work, right? VERY sure it will be performed, because “Signal” and “Hanataba” just have been performed so often, while “monochrome” only once. And they can make a pretty good show out of it.
Hanataba The accordion needs to do something again, right? Other than that, there is only “Signal” left, if I remember correctly, so chances are very high for Hanataba  (although, I’d prefer Signal <D).
ARIA Ah, Hikaru’s signature song. It’s hard to believe that it won’t come up and apparently many fans voted for it. I would love to hear this in a new version, as Hikaru probably can’t really do it in the original style anymore, as we have seen at the Red Day Live. That’s why I am super interested in new interpretations of old songs and “ARIA” would be perfect, as she did already in the Premium Lives. Haru wa kogane no yume no naka An underrated song in my opinion and performed like never. Hopefully hopefully. Obbligato or Mata kaze ga tsuyoku natta I suppose at least one rock song that isn’t upbeat will be performed and I hope for either one or both of it, because they are performed sooo rarely and give great change of style. And I want to heat Wakana’s super high kajiurago part in “Obbligato” xD Tombo I am missing ballads in this setlist, so I guess their most recent one will come up too. Just as they performed all the songs from the “Into the World/Märchen” single during 9+ONE, I say they will do the same in the 10th Anniversary with the “Hyakka Ryouran” single. Lirica SUCH an underrated song and loooong overdue in a recorded live concert. I need this. WE need this. Alleluia I’m missing some Keiko songs here as well. I really want to hear this and not “Ongaku” xD Very popular, so chances are high I guess. Seventh Heaven An amazing song, which I suppose is also popular. But the main reason I picked this is that MAYBE Kalafina will perform all their album flag ships. It would make sense, because it would make a great theme throughout the concert, you know, as a journey through Kalafina music history.
Red Moon See above. Dark songs ftw.
Eden See above. Also, a super nice mood changer.
Consolation See above.
Far on the Water See above :p Also, a Rekishi Hiwa Historia song somehow needs to be there right? I hope it’s just not “Storia”. Please. not. “Storia”.
-------------
Honorable mentions aka songs that won’t be performed but still I kinda hope for it, but probably not, but maybe, but no.
(* Adore: This definitely won’t come up, although I voted for it in the poll. I think it’s too much of a B-side and to be fair, the album version isn’t really good, only the live versions.), (Kichigo no Shigemi ni), (Door), (In Every Nothing), (Kotonoha), (Yami no Uta). ----------------
As for the other predictions:
A new album would be amazing and kind of overdue, but I am not really convinced that that will happen. If the rumors of an autumn world tour were true, then they would have to release the album maybe in spring, then immediately do the domestic tour (and other events possibly) and THEN a world tour? Seems a bit too busy for me, even for Kalafina. Then again, no spring/summer tour at all or AGAIN some sort of Best Of Tour? That also seems unlikely to me, so I go with the following:
A world tour in summer/autumn and before that some other smaller events or single releases. But still fingers crossed for a new album, I’m craving for fresh songs.
ALSO, SOLO PERFORMANCES! This hope will go down last XD
ALSO ALSO, A NEW UNRELEASED SONG. If the rumors of a new single in spring were true, then this would be a great opportunity for a premiere performance and a good surprise for the concert. They did this with “Hyakka Ryouran” in 9+ONE in Kitakyushu and “Into the World” at the Arena Live, right? So why not again and people would go crazy.
ALSO ALSO ALSO, some normal song in an acoustic version. Would be nice xD
Movies watched in 2017 (11-20)
Continuing my 2017 film journal. So far, I’ve continued to find some real gems!
Three Came Home (dir. Jean Negulesco, 1950)
Documenting the true story of the American Agnes Newton Smith, a writer interred with her son in a Japanese POW camp during WWII, Three Came Home is a decent film, with solid performances and a few standout scenes. It is a movie which the censorship codes held it back from being a more powerful work; you always get the sense that the filmmakers wanted to show more of the graphic and harrowing side of Smith’s ordeal, which included torture and almost being raped. nevertheless, the filmmakers go as far as they could at the time, even allowing star Claudette Colbert to get in front of the camera sans make-up. Everyone is coated in sweat and grime. Sessue Hayakawa is there too as the sympathetic Colonel Suga. He gets one strong scene toward the end of the movie, where he evokes immense grief and guilt without words, a reminder of his power as a performer and his heyday as one of the best starring actors in Hollywood during the 1910s. (7/10)
BBC Sunday-Night Theatre: Nineteen Eighty-Four (1954)
Peter Cushing as Winston Smith—who can resist that? Once again, this man proves he is one of the most underrated actors to have ever stood before a camera. Despite the obvious low budget, this is a great adaptation of Orwell’s novel, much superior to the American feature adaptation made a few years after. In fact, I would say the low budget and cramped sets add to the desolate, gloomy, claustrophobic atmosphere of Oceania’s dystopian world. Everything is dingy and depressing. The ending retains the bleak outlook of Orwell’s novel and Cushing’s great depiction of brokenness only makes it all the creepier. I also want to highlight the great work Yvonne Mitchell does as Julia; she’s pretty and sensual, but not at all a glamorous starlet like the American ‘50s adaptation. Overall, a great version. If you love the book and care about your adaptations being accurate, then you’ll probably enjoy this picture. (9/10)
Reaching for the Moon (dir. Edmund Goulding, 1930)
I wouldn’t really call this movie good and the only folks I can recommend it to are old movie buffs like me, but if you are into pre-code movies, art deco, Bebe Daniels, and/or Douglas Fairbanks Sr., then Reaching for the Moon is worth watching once. The plot is frivolous and forgettable, the pace is slow even for a 70 minute picture, and poor Fairbanks is kind of wasted. He spends some time doing his usual acrobatic thing, but it always feels slapped on and not organic to the scenes. Apparently the movie was originally supposed to be a musical, but the studio cut most of the songs at the last minute since audiences were getting tired of musicals in mid-1930. To be honest, I wish they had kept them in, because the musical numbers are the most energetic and engaging parts of the film. I especially enjoyed Bing Crosby and Bebe Daniels in the jazzy, very Depression-era number “When the Folks High Up Do the Mean Low Down.” Easily, that scene and the art direction are the best assets the movie has to offer; William Cameron Menzies does lovely work on the art deco sets, which are like a dream of 1920s glamor. (6/10)
The Eternal Mother (dir. DW Griffith, 1912)
Like the Griffith short I watched in the last batch, not an essential among his early work. Mabel Normand and Blanche Sweet are wasted as a wanton woman and a virtuous wife. The plot is incredibly thin and silly: a man leaves his good wife for a tart; the tart bears his child and dies on cue. The wife is so good that she takes in the child and the husband spends his years alone until he and the wife reunite as elderly folks. Not much of interest on the technical or story scale. (4/10)
Three Outlaw Samurai (dir. Hideo Gosha, 1964)
I got interested in this one after figuring out Rian Johnson used it as an influence on the next Star Wars movie. I’m guessing most of the influence came from the way Gosha shoots the swordplay, which is very kinetic and rough, but there may be some of the film’s cynical treatment of justice and honor in the new Star Wars too… maybe, since Star Wars is rarely cynical when it comes to good and evil, but we shall see. Regardless, it is a good film, an essential if you like chambara. (8/10)
The Dentist (dir. Leslie Pearce, 1932)
To say WC Fields is weird is an understatement. I would not say I am a fan, but I do adore his surreal and deadpan Yukon parody The Fatal Glass of Beer and generally like The Bank Dick. The Dentist isn’t as impressive as either of those, but it has plenty of good, misanthropic laughs as well as some very risqué humor for 1932 (but then again, this is from the pre-code era). (7/10)
The Fall of the House of Usher (dir. JS Watson Jr. and Melville Webber, 1928)
While not as good as the later Watson and Webber offering, Lot in Sodom, their surreal adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story is still dazzling. It actually feels quite modern. It is a modern dress adaptation and conjures more of the dreadful, claustrophobic spirit of the original story rather than sticking closely to the letter. It also has a lot more obvious Caligari influence than the later Lot in Sodom. (9/10)
Fire Over England (dir. William K. Howard, 1937)
I’ve been reading a lot about the Tudors lately and Elizabeth is my favorite of the bunch. After watching the pretty poor Cate Blanchett movie, I went sixty years back to this 1937 adventure film produced by Alexander Korda. While not focusing exclusively on Elizabeth, it does tell a rousing yarn about an English spy (playing by a young and totally adorable Laurence Olivier) out to do business in Philip II’s court before the legendary English victory over the Spanish Armada in the 1580s. It’s a fun swashbuckler complete with broad characters, a hiss-worthy villain, swordplay, and daring escapes, also of historical interest since the conflict between England and Spain is meant to reflect the then-contemporary conflict between most of Europe and the Nazi Germany. Flora Robson is a great screen Elizabeth, commanding and charismatic while also sporting a fierce temper. And though given little to do, Vivien Leigh is ravishing, and even in this early film, she and Olivier are wonderful together. (8/10)
Ruka [The Hand] (dir. Jiri Trnka, 1965)
I was turned onto the work of Czech animator Jiri Trnka by the Brows Held High episode on his 1959 feature adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. That film is a charming fantasy and heartfelt look at the power of art; however, Trnka’s most famous film, the short “Ruka,” is much darker and proved to be his swan song before he passed away in 1969. It is a political satire about the suppression of artistic expression in totalitarian regimes. It is both darkly hilarious and incredibly bleak. Considering Trnka’s work is usually characterized as nostalgic and whimsical, his final film is strikes a sad, but still powerful chord and remains incredibly relevant even today. (10/10)
Big Deal on Madonna Street (dir. Mario Monicelli, 1958)
So freaking funny! I watched this one because Martin Scorsese recommended it as one of his choices for essential foreign cinema. Though Big Deal is a parody of 1950s heist pictures such as The Asphalt Jungle and Rififi, it is nothing like the pathetic cinematic parodies we get now, like Meet the Spartans or Fifty Shades of Black. Like Airplane or Blazing Saddles, it still understands that it needs to work as an original story with characters we enjoy watching and good gags that don’t really on references to popular culture alone. Big Deal is also interesting in its presentation of everyday life and urban poverty, seeing as our heroes are a mix of sad sack, small time criminals and lower class working folk; in many ways, it feels like a comic romp set in the same universe as The Bicycle Thieves or Umberto D. (9/10)
DeModa – Lucid Dreams EP & Exclusive Interview
One of rBeatz favorite artists right now, DeModa, recently put out his new EP, Lucid Dreams, and I’m really feeling these unique elements from the New York City based-producer and performer. His fluttering ambiance, unique synthscapes, guitar focused and choppy/glitchy vibe create an uplifting feel that fit nicely around the vocals.
DeModa has a live show that he does all himself. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays the guitar, keys, drums, and sample pads throughout his show. Think Youngr and Mura Masa. These are the artists that I’m most impressed with these days. The process of creating and playing all instruments by yourself is the true testament of a producer, and to put that on stage, live, is next-level. We’ve had the pleasure of interviewing DeModa below.
You know the drill, play the Lucid Dreams EP and read the interview below for the FULL DeModa experience.
INTERVIEW:
Where does the name DeModa come from and why did you pick it?
Glad you’ve asked! It comes from the Spanish phrase “de moda” which means in-style, tasteful, or trendy. It felt fitting for the music I was making because, although I try to create a unique style, I also incorporate some of the tasteful elements from genres I love.
Where are you from and how has that shaped the musician you are today?
I was born and raised in NYC, and have been here my whole life. Being such a competitive city that is so focused on what’s “cool,” and what is going to be “cool” 5 minutes from now, it sort of influenced me to ride my own wave. My belief is that you won’t get very far chasing trends and doing something that has already been done a million and a half times. However, I do like to tip my hat to the popular trends from time to time. For the most part I pressure myself to bring something new to the table.
You are a one man show, so what playing elements are most challenging for you? Did you play any instruments when you were younger?
Playing guitar is probably the most natural for me, since I’ve been playing for about 13 years. The keys and percussion I tend to struggle with the more, but the most challenging aspect of my live performance is crowd-engagement and stage fright. Most performing artists probably look out into the crowd and see an ocean of happy, dancing, music-lovers, however, my brain usually tells me there is an angry mob with pitchforks and torches just waiting to tar and feather me for missing that D#.
Is there an instrument that you currently wish you COULD play?
Oh yeah, the drums for sure. Drummers get all the girls.
Tell us the story of how you got started creating music on your computer?
Funny story actually. When I had started getting into electronic music, I told a friend, “you know, I think I could make something like that,” and my lovely, supportive friend replied “Yeah. Better leave that to the people who actually have talent.” I clearly took that as a challenge and started making electronic music. Now, a bunch of songs and a-whole-lot-of-money-invested later, I’m trapped
Kidding. Making electronic music is fun.
What has been your favorite moment when creating your 2017 EP, Lucid Dreams?
That’s a tough one, because there were so many favorite moments. I’d have to say my favorites were the times when each featured singer sent me their vocal stems. Watching all the songs come together with the vocals was so fulfilling.
What do you like to do when you’re simply hanging out – aside from music?
Hanging with my old friends, probably. All of our lives have taken us to very different places, and I find myself missing them a lot of the time. Nobody can make me laugh as hard as they can.
Do you participate in any extracurricular activities?
Yes! I’ve been DJing for a charity called Emily’s Entourage, which is about raising funds for cystic fibrosis and nonsense mutations research. They’ve raised enough money recently to fund the research without any grants from the government. It’s truly an amazing experience.
Also, before the DeModa project, I used to be a competitive Muay Thai kickboxer. I have a few fights under my belt but I’ve found that writing music involves my face getting punched a little bit less, so I’ve decided to go with that instead.
Who has been one of your favorite acts to collab with?
All of them! And I don’t say that to be sensitive to anyone’s feelings. Each collaboration I’ve had, everyone has truly brought something new and unique and special to the table.
Who are your musical influences?
There are so many, but to name a few:
The Beatles. They were able to achieve a unique, psychedelic euphoria that was also so catchy and universally loved. Even now with all of the technology we have that would still be an amazing feat.
Hendrix. His guitar riffs were so mind-blowingly complex and smooth that I imagine he slept with his guitar and maybe even had sexual encounters with it.
Freddy Mercury. Self-explanatory.
Porter Robinson. The worlds album/live tour still brings tears to my eyes when I hear/watch it.
Flume. Another artist who is so psychedelic and complex, there is just no one else like him. People can try to emulate him but by the time they even marginally come close, he’s already updated and reinvented his sound.
What DAW do you use and why?
Logic X, because it was an easy transition from the broke days of GarageBand.
Maschine 2, for live performance and production, because Native Instruments makes the best everything.
What is your favorite MIDI Controller right now?
I’m biased because I just picked up the Komplete Kontrol S49 keyboard the other day and I’m still not over the mini light show you get when you turn it on. I have 5 midi controllers at the moment and 3 of them are Native Instruments brand. One could say I’m a fanboy.
What is one of your favorite or go-to VST Plugin?
Depends what I’m using it for.
  Synth: Massive
  Drum machines: Izotope’s Breaktweaker is probably the most underrated drum machine of all time.
  Pitch automation: Waves’ Soundshifter Pitch
  Compression: Native Instruments Supercharger GT
  EQ: I love Logic X’s stock EQ, but I also love the Izotope Ozone EQ, because of the way you can option-click and single out small increments to find those muddy frequencies.
What is your biggest accomplishment to date?
This one time Nora En Pure made eye contact with me for about .73 seconds, so that was pretty cool ~
Other than that probably the success of Downtown Glow on Spotify.
Do you have a key production tip for our young producers out there?
Yes. If you’re not willing to sacrifice losing your friends, most of your social life, money; if you’re not willing to take the time to research, learn, practice, and perfect your craft; if you can’t take rejection, constructive criticism, destructive criticism, naysayers; if you cannot bring something new to the table, or otherwise do something much better than the person who originated it; if you’re not ready to work 2 full-time jobs and strategically invest most of that earned money into your music career; if you’re not ready to go all in, it’s probably not worth the time to learn any production tips. That’s probably the most fundamental production tip out there.
What has been your top favorite venue to play and why?
The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn with Gibbz was fun, and hopefully after this summer tour I’ll have a new one!
What is your favorite color?
Purple.
What food do you eat the most?
Pizza, before it was cool.
What is your favorite social media platform and why?
I mostly dislike social media but lurking in the weird, dark corners of Facebook is always fun.
What is next for DeModa?
Some music videos, collaborations, and remixes are on the way, as well as a remix EP for Downtown Glow and then hopefully a debut album!
