i think, because steve knows what it's like to be set aside by someone he loved and because of the fear he has attained after it, he understands where you're coming from, but that doesn't mean it hurts any less when you reject his advances, or refuse his compliments, or brush him off when he tries to tell you how much you mean to him

and it hurts him because he knows you feel what he feels too. and when he sees that flash, that second, of pain in your eyes right before you roll them when he says you're the prettiest person he's ever seen, or that he only wants you, or there's no one else for him, that's when his heart breaks too

steve tries to laugh it off too, to keep his charm going, to kiss the pout off your lips before it even takes shape, but his heart squeezes tight in his chest with need

but he'll keep trying and telling you until you believe him, because he knows you are worth it.
