PLEASE do share your thoughts on Jackie's parents 👀
Tumblr media
THANK YOU for the encouragement. this might get long
let's start with how a while ago i got an anon implying that jackie was pampered by her parents BASED on the scene with adult shauna and them on jackie's birthday. which was the first time it ever occurred to me that people watched that scene and saw something completely different from what i saw. absolutely incomprehensible TO ME to even imagine that because i remember watching it for the first time and thinking that jackie's parents are straight out of a horror movie. there is something so sinister about how they treat shauna all while essentially replacing jackie WITH shauna. shauna gets jackie's gift and i believe (although i'd have to rewach the scene to make sure) shauna blows the candles on JACKIE'S cake and shauna is there with jackie's high school boyfriend. jackie's mother went to her wedding!! the show is not subtle about them putting shauna in the role of the daughter they lost. so why treat her so horribly? when they have no reason to because they don't know she was sleeping with jeff before plane crash before it's revealed to them in that very scene
so what that tells me and how i interpret it is: that's how they were treating jackie when she was alive. there is this insidious sort of cruelty that's masked by fake kindness? but constantly puts you down in ways that's hard to shake off. and jackie was probably Never good enough no matter how much she tried. she only became the Perfect Daughter after death when they could start treating shauna the way they treated jackie. like WHY is jackie such a deeply deeply insecure character? why does she crave validation sooooo bad? and we know she doesn't have a good relationship with her parents from how she talks about her mother when she gives shauna the pills on the plane (and implies her parents are neglectful) and when she says she has curfew and it's very much implied her parents would react badly vs shauna saying she has curfew too but being so unbothered by it she finds time to fuck jeff on her way home lmao. and to me people who fail to notice that are fooled by the appearances. jackie's parents have money and a big house and AFTER JACKIE IS DEAD idealize her. but what they seem not to notice is that the purpose of talking about how perfect jackie was is to belittle shauna. this isn't grieving parents who miss their daughter to me
and now actually let's talk about how i think that interpretation influences jackie as a character. we see how in moments of insecurity she does say things that are... i suppose a mix of self centered and not INTENTIONALLY mean but still hurtful to shauna. but she does usually backtrack and says sorry and her (many many MANY) moments of kindness always come off as genuine to me like she's starved for approval, she craves being loved. i think she keeps coming back to jeff just because even tho she doesn't want HIM she wants to be wanted and wants to be seen as someone who's wanted. but so much of her kindness sometimes feels. how do i put it. anxious? and so i imagine how living with her parents was for her. you're a kid and your parents keep finding ways to belittle you and to shame you but in ways that aren't very obvious especially to a child. you're a kid! you want their approval! so you learn HOW to be and HOW to act to maybe get it. if i am sweet and compliment them and i become the perfect daughter maybe they'll love me. and then you start applying that behavior to all your relationships and you're not even self aware about it. you're a teenager and you're trying so hard

. . . (🍷) ֶָ֢ 𔓘 MY HEART IS ALREADY YOUR'S, JUST CLAIM IT ; an atsushi nakajima drabble. ❞
˗ˏˋ ꒰ 🍷 ꒱ . . . athelete atsushi fluff? hell yeah!! give atsushi love you guys. (aka give me attention).
˗ˏˋ ꒰ 🍷 ꒱ . . . tw; angst, fluff, hurt to comfort idk, fem!reader, footballer!atsushi, actress!reader, anxious atsushi, atsushi has low self esteem, atsushi and reader are just cute fools in love and that's it ig,
Tumblr media
sometimes losing is essential for the development of a person but not now. atsushi is ready to loose anything but this moment, his perfect and only opportunity to open his heart and serve it on a platter. oh whatever entity is above , he prays to you tonight to let things go his way for once. atsushi doesn't deem himself worthy of many things and it's the same now as he runs, bumping into people and profusely apologizing to them, anxious eyes glancing back to make sure his bouquet of flowers he carefully picked doesn't get damaged in the slightest.
anxious, scared yet excitement coated with nervousness.
atsushi is a man of sorrow, of disappointments and of unfortune but he had always gambled his way, betting his entire life for the temporary and fabricated worth to breath, to inhale without feeling as if he owns something and everything to everyone. the burning in his knees aren't from fatigue, he is a good runner or he wouldn't be in the national team but from fear.
he knows he doesn't have much time but please, oh please, let him have a few minutes at most. that's all he needs and deserves. feeling himself near the port where it all started years ago when atsushi was still a freshman in university, atsushi feels the same he felt that day.
and as the adults in his life turned a blind eye to his misfortunes, he too, turns a deaf ear to the thumping in his heart.
he speeds up, his eyes sparkles and he stops in his tracks entirely. the transition of his panick to cold anxiety is impressive but not more impressive then you who waited for him even if he is half an hour late from the original meet up time that he had set and shame not only backhugs him but makes its authority, its dominance over him clear in the form of the blood rushing to his cheeks.
"i . . . am late, sor-"
"-- yeah, you are late."
"i . . . please come to support me tomorrow, it's the semi finals."
you two spoke at the same time and even the way you two widened your eyes happened at the same time.
atsushi had never been a man of fake hope but come on, this moment can't be a coincidence right?
raising his hand to place it on his nape which he then rubbed to form some friction strong enough to take his attention away from his furiously beating heart, atsushi glances down, biting his lip for his words are lost in the labyrinth which is his brain.
you bite your thumb, anxious eyes staying on him before falling on the bouquet of flowers by his side but you don't speak rather, you can't. you have never been one to speak first after all.
a few minutes of agonizing silence passed by before the small yet prominent part of atsushi which is a rebel compared to the rest of his personality, shouted, begged even for him to speak out now or hold this same cruel silence forever.
and who is atsushi but not a man and who is a man but not him who doesn't take the opportunity presented infront of him, taking the risk all for that success which isn't even guaranteed to be his?
taking a deep breath, his stomach is churning in anxiety, he exhales and couldn't, no matter how much he tried to, ignore the sweat forming on his nape.
atsushi raised his head, feeling his fingers turn cold and the coldness spreading to the rest of his hand.
atsushi took a step forward and grabbed your forearm, pulling you near him.
oh.
calling you out despite knowing your movie premiere is in a few hours, finding time to squeeze out of his own hectic training to run all the way here and all for a measly invitation?
no, no, wait no. oh god, no.
this wasn't what he wanted to say, he wanted to confess today yet no matter how much atsushi matures, how much he heals, he will remain the same coward he was ever since a kid.
atsushi could feel tears pooling in his eyes at utter disappointment at his own self, lips parted yet closed because will a confession even matter now? he ruined his chances.
atsushi's coach playfully slapped his back, leading him out of the stadium and your smile didn't dare leave your face as you see him laugh, hiding the upper half of his face with his hand as he didn't try to fight the countless teasings of his teammates, he liked it, liked when they spoke of your name and his in the same sentence.
your heart squeezed in pain upon seeing tears in the eyes of the angel who stood with you many time despite your habit of always fucking over everything.
you knew you would either be proud or regret this moment but when has any of that ever mattered when it comes to atsushi so you step forwards, hesitantly raising your arms before you engulfed the man in a hug, wrapping your arms around his neck as you pull him closer.
atsushi broke down.
mayhaps it's the pressure of representing the country in the semi finals of the world cup, the expectations of his teammates, the fear of failing infront of the entire world, failing infront of you or maybe it's because he is disappointed in itself, lost his faith in himself and because he doesn't think he is worthy of hugging you
"if you win tomorrow," you pause, sadly looking down at his trembling form as he silently cries, ashamed and embarrassed, disappointed and sorrowful, ". . .take me out on a date and kiss me by the end of the night."
you complete your sentence as you didn't mind his arms being by his sides and not encircling your waist. you take the bouquet from his hand while you continue to rub his back in a comforting way with the other.
atsushi nods, face hiding in the crook of your neck and you close your eyes, relishing in the short moment of peace your heart acquired before your big show tonight, nothing but well wishes and hopes leaving your heart for the white haired man who is in your arms.
and you sigh, in disappointment or sadness, you aren't sure but one thing for certain is that atsushi nakajima won't confess today even if his feelings are awfully obvious.
and you? you will wait, for tomorrow, for you were tired of waiting and gave him the shove he needed.
and you could only hope that the status of your relationship changes tomorrow and who is atsushi if not a man?
and who is a man who doesn't grasp the opportunity presented to him?
and atsushi is a man, a human of the rawest form or else is there any better explanation to explain why only a day later, as atsushi scored the last goal, his first instinct wasn't to run towards his teammates and celebrate, wasn't to admire the fireworks fired to congratulate the winning team ; the team he is a part of.
but to look at the bleachers where thousands of fans sat and between them, were you, his eyes immediately found you because he had been looking at you many times once his teammate pointed you out to him.
your heart thumped in your chest, a grin couldn't be stopped by your self control from taking over your face as you continued to look at atsushi who pointed at himself, ran a hand through his hair, showed you two fingers -- his index and middle finger to indicate 'two' -- before he pointed at his wrist and then finally looked at you with a raised eyebrow.
in response, you tilted your head as you pouted subtly before closing your eyes as you shrugged and nodded, giggling upon seeing atsushi being swarmed by his teammates running and jumping onto him.
"two hours . . . i have spend an entire year while waiting for you to confess so two more hours isn't a big deal for me." you mumbled to yourself, not even thinking of the scandals and articles the media will publish centred on you and atsushi.
your eyes soften at the sight below of the happy and excited team members who ruffled atsushi's hair or congratulated him for his goal did end up being the one to make them enter the finals after all.
the grin on atsushi's face, sweat dribbling down his temples and the way sweet laughs left his lips were the sight you wanted to see forever.
when you leaned your chin on your palm and leaned forwards, you could almost picture atsushi being this joyful with your kids -- having a family with atsushi? the thought had you biting down on your bottom lip shyly.
atsushi ran towards his coach who patted his back, congratulating him and throwing a few praises which had the younger boy blushing in embarrassment when his eyes, once again, found you and atsushi tuned out from the world, his eyes were focused on only you and the adrenaline from winning which was still in his veins converted into courage and the small prominent part of him, the rebel, possessed him when atsushi raised his hand to point at you before blowing a flying kiss in your direction, winking after and the way he smirked when he saw your eyes widen in surprise before you smiled had nearly the entire stadium squealing at the sight of the man.
atsushi chuckled, turning to face his teammate as he talked to him for a few minutes before he looked at you again, winking again, taking advantage of this newfound courage in him and something about the sight of a sweat drenched atsushi with his hair messed up winking has you clenching your thighs and smiling like a lovesick fool.
you cover your bottom half of your face with your palm to conceal your smile from the many eyes and atsushi laughed, covering and rubbing his face with his hands -- the camera flashed capturing both of you in the moment and it will surely make a good cover picture on tomorrow's articles.

A New Character for PAW Patrol Movie 3?
Recently, a user on the PAW Patrol Wiki found a link to a website about casting new actors for the upcoming third PAW Patrol movie. In it, they gave some details about a new character; "Dexter".
Tumblr media
As you can see here, Dexter is described as a golden retriever, wheelchair bound, expert on large jungle animals, good at inventing things with the resources around him, and is prone to make mistakes and treats each one as a new learning experience. He also has a rhino as a "best friend", and the Audition Package included mentions two other characters; "Martin" and... "Watermelon"?
It's important to note that PAW Patrol: The Movie 3 is still very early in its development. All or most of this can, and likely will, change at some point. Then again, some or even all of this might get scrapped at some point, so take all of this with a grain of salt. There's no guarantee any of this will make it to the final product, but if anything, at least it gives us a very brief glimpse of one aspect of the upcoming sequel.
However, there's still no info on which of the main six PAW Patrol pups it'll focus on... or if it'll be one of them? The website's trying to find a voice actor for this Dexter, but it's also trying to find one for Ryder, too. Maybe that's a clue to who they picked after all? Or maybe it means nothing. Who knows, and those that do aren't talking.
Fan reaction to this has been, from what I've noticed, mixed. Chances are, you noticed right away that Dexter sounds like a combination of many characters in PAW Patrol already, such as Rex and Tracker. There's also some aspects of Marshall and Rocky in there, which makes me wonder if that'll affect either of their chances to be the focus of film #3. Plus, while fans have praised the inclusion of more disability representation, some of us (myself, included) are disappointed that they went with one we've already seen. Given the large range of disabilities out there, such as autism, aspergers, deaf, etc., it's a shame they picked one that's already been represented. Given Brunker's penchant for plucking things from the TV series to repurpose them for his movie, I suppose I can't say I'm surprised.
With all this said, the film's still in its early development cycle, so things may change from now until its planned release date. The only other thing to mention is that the page sometimes refers to the movie as "PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie 3", which some have taken to mean it might be about superpowers again. Chances are, this is just a placeholder, thus it'll absolutely change down the line. At least, I hope so... I'm not too keen on them focusing on superpowers once more, though maybe others might feel differently.
That's all for now. And if anyone wants to check the site out for themselves, here's a link.

I’m not saying that CE as an actor can’t be critiqued or that you can’t be disappointed in his role choices or dislike a movie he is in but I don’t understand why so many people in the fandom (or people who claim to be fans) constantly say he’s bad at what he does or hasn’t got the talent.
He clearly does. Of course he’s a handsome white man which definitely would have helped him, but the guy can act.
He has had some rocky patches but none of us can claim to know how/why he chooses certain films. When he experiments he is always great and I think it’s overlooked a lot of the time but Captain America is actually a very hard character to get right. He also spent a lot of his career being type cast.
I’m not saying we have to pour one out for the man but can we just stop ragging on every single thing about him at the moment.
(I’m not accusing you of doing this I just think it is wide spread across the fandom and when we aren’t ragging on him for the relationship situation we are ragging his career. Can we not just have some fun and literally talk about ANYTHING ELSE…at least half of the time? You’re a safe space that’s why I came to you)
I definitely understand what you say. I don't agree with this whole situation, whether it's PR or real, but I also don't agree when people, for example, body shame him or make disgusting comments about his appearance. I'd say the same goes for his work. I really try to separate him as an actor from him as a person. It's still hard for me to do because I've loved his characters because of him, and while I don't agree with whatever this is, a lot of his projects are my favorites, and I love watching them after a long day. But at the same time, I don't want to support someone who married someone like Alba, but I've been excited for PH, for example, so yeah, it's a hard thing to decide, and I think a lot of people feel the same way.
I'm obviously against everything Alba and her friends stand for, but it's hard for me to “let him go” and to imagine he is like them.
I agree that he is a great actor, and I think he has rage. He played very different characters very well, and I agree that playing Captain America is not that easy, and he did an amazing job.
He had a few not-that-great projects, for example, "Playing It Cool," but all in all, I think he had really great ones.
The problem is that most people are really disappointed in him, and not a lot of people want to talk about his projects or how excited they are about his newer ones. When I tried to talk about something else, people accused me of being racist and antisemitic just because I said something good about him.
And to be honest, most people aren't even excited after everything. They don't want to see his movies; they don't care about him. There are a lot of people who are only here to see how this whole thing ends, and that's it. He's lost a lot of fans, and I don't think it's because he is married or not, or who knows, but because of Alba and his friends.
I understand why people are disappointed or why people don't want to support him anymore, but sometimes I feel like people are too cruel to him. Call me anything you want; maybe it's just my stupidity or the faith that I still have in him, but I can't and won't ever say bad things about his hair, teeth, or body, or call him talentless. I know I said he doesn't look that healthy and seems like things have taken a toll on his mental health, but it was just me expressing my concerns.

Murder by Death (1976)
Tumblr media
A weird little guy invites five world-famous detectives to his spooky mansion for the weekend, to see if he can outwit them once and for all. Silliness and charmingly lame jokes ensue. And if you're at least a casual fan of 20th century English-language detective fiction / movies up to 1976, you'll appreciate the characters and genre tropes being parodied / taken down here.
While not as raucously funny as other comedy movies from this era (like Airplane! and Blazing Saddles, assuming that era's comedy works for you at all), the Neil Simon script is consistently chuckle-worthy, with some genuine lol moments. There is one joke involving Peter Falk firing a gun and having to go to the bathroom that is one of the stupidest, funniest things I have ever seen, almost entirely because of how he delivers it. Seriously, the whole movie is worth watching just for that.
Speaking of Peter Falk, the cast is Hollywood royalty, many of them reprising crime-solving characters in parody that they were at this point famous for. Special note to James Coco as the Hercule Peroit parody Milo Perrier, one of the few actors who seems to get the tone the screenplay is trying for, so he is perpetually funny. And of course Peter Falk as Sam Diamond, being absolutely perfect as Columbo doing Humphrey Bogart doing Sam Spade. Falk was never not 110%, and that's also true here. Truman Capote, playing the principal antagonist, is...well. He was never a great actor. But he's certainly being Truman Capote and that kind of makes up for it.
Also special shout-out to Estelle Winwood, who at 93 is bright-eyed and sharp enough to make an extended fart joke funny.
(That woman died eight years after this, two years after I was born. She was born in 1883 and debuted on Broadway in 1916. Amazing.)
The big black mark on this is Peter Sellers as Sidney Wang, doing his awful stupid Charlie Chan Tojo "me so solly" yellowface garbage. Obviously his history of doing this character like this, to pop culture acclaim, was enough to get him into this movie doing it, WELL PAST the point where it was in any way acceptable. The movie knows that, sort of, and tries to Tropic Thunder it by making his behavior an object of (too) light scorn, while also pairing him with an "adopted Japanese son," played by Japanese-American actor Richard Narita. It is still utterly awkward and gross, redeemed only slightly by the fact that Sellers is a good actor so he gives Wang genuine depth of character, despite the rest of this. That is in no way a defense, and it is still terrible. Just slightly less terrible, maybe? Relatively?
With all of the magical realism and trope tear-downs in this plot, I kept expecting by the end that someone would reveal Sellers as a character perpetuating a racist fraud. But they aren't brave enough to do that. Real shame.
Tumblr media
Also there are no Holmes and Watson parodies here, which seems like a glaring omission. Wikipedia says they cut scenes from the original screenplay which would have had them either show up right at the end, after the crime has already been solved, or near the end, and then solve it. These were apparently cut because it was decided they would distract from and overshadow the plot at that point.
Fair enough. But as the plot by the end is purposeful convoluted goofiness mixed with a meta-commentary on the whodunnit genre in general...would it have made THAT much of a difference? I don't think so.
It is a breezy 90 minutes. And while the first half drags purposefully bad jokes out a little too long and has trouble settling on a consistent comedic tone, it ramps up and is really solid by the end.
There are also some surprising jokes about sexuality and gender identity here. I don't want to oversell that, because it is all played as just more wackiness. But I didn't expect anything quite like this in a Hollywood movie from 1976. A welcome surprise.
Oh and the paper caricatures of the cast at the beginning and end were drawn by Charles Addams. Yes, THAT Charles Addams.
Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 67%. I'd go higher than that, at least the high seventies. That Peter Falk bathroom joke at like an hour and seventeen minutes is really goddamn funny.

CD's Movie Poll #1 Winner
The Road to El Dorado
* fair warning: spoilers ahead *
Kicking off the start of my movie poll/movie watching series is Dreamworks’ The Road to El Dorado!
Tumblr media
ngl this film has been on my watchlist for quite a while, and yet I never got around to actually watching it until now! (or rather, not until the other night lol) I’d heard so many great things about it before like the memorable characters, the kind of 2D animation that you really don’t see in Dreamworks films these days, and of course, the music!
I will say that I really enjoyed all three of those things in some ways and others 🤩
Right off the bat, Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh have really great chemistry! In fact, I loved their chemistry so much that I wanted to see footage of them recording their lines. so I legit looked up something like “road to el dorado behind the scenes” on youtube as soon as I finished watching the film and found that not only did they do ALL their voice recording sessions together in the same room but they also used plastic swords and playfully had it at each other!! AHHHHHH! so good!! 😂 ⚔️
but yeah they're hilarious! both on screen and behind it. I also just love the fact that both Kevin and Kenneth come from theater backgrounds cause I think that definitely added to how well they portrayed being con men 🎭
Ofc actors aside, some of you probably know this about me already, but I’m a BIG fan of dynamic duos when it comes to media...
Tumblr media
I loved the straight man-ness that was Tulio, and he was probably my favorite of the two. I tend to like characters that find comfort in strategy, cause I tend to be that kinda person too. I know sometimes the logical and level-headed ones aren't always funny, entertaining, or the people to root for in the slightest. But Tulio definitely isn't one of them. I found myself chuckling at a good number of things he said and did like not believing in fate simply cause he relies on loaded dice for example, plus his sarcasm, and how much he tried to compose his patience as well
Miguel was great too! It was fun how much he loved the city of El Dorado and just wanted to take it all in, and his endless optimism of course! But he definitely needed more guitar playing scenes! idk there’s something about those characters who just have an instrument to play at the ready for dramatics that’s really humorous for me, it’s almost, if not totally, breaking the fourth wall in a way 😆
I also really enjoyed the Chief, I love how it’s implied that he knew all along Miguel and Tulio were humans and not gods and yet he still liked them and let them stay anyway. that said, it's kind of a shame that the pair didn't stay in el dorado cause there genuinely were people there who adored them when clearly the people of Spain didn’t…heck they didn't seem to have a problem that they weren't actually gods!
and you have to admit, Miguel and Tulio did match the stone art of the gods quite nicely, like the resemblance there was freaky 😳
Chel was great as well, her cleverness and way of sweet talking definitely stood out to me the most about her character, and I also really loved her voice! 😌
and Altivo the horse? I wanna say he was truly Miguel’s companion when compared to Tulio earning the heart of Chel. after all, Miguel was the one who wanted to rescue him and bring him along, and I was genuinely happy when they decided to bring him on their journey cause the horse wasn’t a bad guy, like he not only gave Tulio and Miguel the keys to escape the ship, but he wasn’t spiteful to them or anything. basically what I’m trying to say is he isn’t how Maximus treated Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert initially, horse to con man
As for the villain? well…this is the first of three times I’m gonna be saying, “I got some Aladdin vibes from this movie" 😅 👉👈 which isn’t completely a bad thing by any means!
But yeah…I immediately got Jafar vibes the minute Tzekel-Kan came on screen (also I had to look up this name cause I didn’t catch it very well while I was watching this film, I just kept calling him “Priest Guy”)
I mean…the fact that he can do sorcery, on top of serving a sweet kind-hearted ruler, tangling with not just one but two thieves, anybody picking up what I’m putting down? Yeah that’s really all I gotta say about that guy 🤷🏻‍♀️
also I swear to god that Jim Cummings is in literally everything that was 2D-animated in the 1990s-2000s! and he's always gotta play that big tough guy. Again, that also reminded me of Aladdin. but then again the conquistador didn’t really have that big of a role in this, at the very least I just hope he gave T-K what he got coming to him
I guess just to get it out of the way, I was admittedly humming "One Jump Ahead" in the beginning when Tulio and Miguel are getting chased through the city, but that’s all there is in terms of Aladdin similarities the way i see it
lastly in terms of the characters and cast, I gotta give credit to Elton John for being part of it too! I mean who doesn't love a singing narrator? and he and Tim Rice did an awesome job crafting the soundtrack for this film. every song was absolutely BEAUTIFUL 🎶 ✨
Needless to say, the animation was 👌 and the opening sequence was definitely one of my favorites throughout the whole film as well as the expressions and the solid movements of the characters, very well done no question there. oh! and how there were just gold objects of anything from butterflies to apples in el dorado! they didn’t call it the city of gold for nothing! ✨✨✨
but in the end, did it really have go the route of the overall goal is get all the gold by the end only to actually lose most, if not all, of it by the end? I just feel like that plot line is done a lot in movies. tho to be fair, this was made in the 2000s so heck, it probably began that trend. But I’ve found in recent years that when it comes to treasure hunting movies, this exact scenario happens just repeatedly and it’s nothing new. I’d say movies like The Goonies and Uncharted are two that come to mind for me that have this happen...
Tumblr media
Now there’s no way I can conclude my thoughts here without saying how AMAZING the “It’s Tough to Be a God” sequence was! I LOVED the “It's Tough to Be a God" sequence from the singing of the two leads to the colors to the everything about it, it was all magnificent! I'd arguably say it was my favorite scene in the whole film! And I'd be lying if I said that Miguel and Tulio’s version hasn't been stuck in my head ever since I watched it, because so help me it HAS and STILL IS and why that version is not on Spotify, I have no clue, but it SHOULD be. Again, props to Elton and Tim for writing this song and the others!!
Tumblr media
So overall, I thought El Dorado was a great movie! It was definitely worth the watch! It's not perfect by any means, I'm not even sure it's my favorite Dreamworks film, but it was still very fun and entertaining all the same and I'm really glad that I finally got to see it after all these years! 🤗

you're so right about shika reacting like that, I totally agree!!!
I love the fact that the supernatural are known in your novella, that's so uncommon for books like that and I love it! the vampiric animals is a really cool and original idea omg I can't imagine vampire cats, they're so chaotic already, add vampirism to it??? they would rule the world and I wouldn't complain. the implied conversion of the MC though?!?!?!? I love it, it would definitely be me, who would say no to being a vampire????? I would love to read it 😭😭
you got me with the mystery part of your other story, I'm obsessed with that. I also love it when authors use classic tropes but switch the characters around, it makes it so fun! we almost never get playboy MCs either, so that's also super cool!! and the fact that they help each other heal from their issues and grow? &? $? $? I bet I would cry reading that novel but I would love it 100%
AMY????? FIRST????? THAT IS SO COOL I'M SO PROUD OF YOUUU. CONGRATULATIONS OMGGGGGG!!!!!!!! TELL ME YOU CELEBRATED OR SOMETHING! '! &!! & &
how bad is it to get sick during a trip? that's so sad!! also YES I recommend them, I didn't watch them all but I watched a recap and they look cool, it's a classic whodunit and the murders are brutal at times. there's 6 movies in total!! the 6th was released this year and jenna ortega is a mc, I love her. she also played as Wednesday last year and she's such a good actress. I'll definitely check out happy death day after I finish scream 6!!! <3333 also thank you for your congratulations you're very sweet
Yes! I really wanted to include some of the societal impacts of the supernatural in my book, like my MC being a lecturer in Supernatural Studies. One of her classes is in the book, so you'll get to learn a little about how the Black Death affected vampire clans in London :D
And vampiric animals, yes I wanted to include one, so there is one haha. The process is much trickier than with turning a human into a vampire and it takes much longer, so there aren't many around. Most big clans have one though.
MC doesn't get turned in the book, but it is directly expected and referenced that they will be at some point soon.
As for the novel, yes, I switched it because I thought it'd be very cool to get the playboy's inner monologue. The first parts of the novel include, along with the mystery, a lot of the MC slowly focusing more and more on the male lead and forgetting about flirting with others. Let's just say that MC's friends are sick of hearing them give a play-by-play of what the male lead ate at dinner, and then denying that they're interested in him as anything more than a bit of fun lol.
As for the mystery plot... It's my first time writing a proper one, but I'm having a lot of fun and I think it's a decent one, but we'll see haha.
Haha, I didn't celebrate no, because results were so delayed from the strikes, I only just found out the marks and idk, I'm probably going to get something tasty as a celebration at some point :D Thank you though!!!!! You're so sweet!!!! <333333
I was pretty sick in Tokyo, but it was a combination of the flight, which I predicted would happen because it always does, and then also a really heavy workload while there. I lost 9 lbs in ten days because of how much walking I had to do and I the fact that I was too ill to eat more than two apples over three days. It was a shame, but that's what happens when you're in a big group: you can't tailor the trip to your individual needs like needing to rest after a 14 hour flight and two hour queue at customs XD I still had fun though!
And oh, I didn't know Scream films were who dunnits, that's awesome, I'll put them on my list of things to check out! Thanks for the recommendation!!
And you more than deserve my congratulations for surviving exams hehe

The Boys Who Wouldn't Grow Up - Chapter 2
Summary: The Johnson family has settled into their home for the summer! It's a shame that personal problems have followed them on their journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though we don't see her in the movie, I've given Widow Johnson her own sweet, welcoming personality. Unlike Grandpa with his taxidermy animals, she has a collection of something else. Things aren't as warm and fuzzy with the Johnson's compared with the Emerson's, but that just makes things more interesting~

After one last break to stretch, fuel up the car and take Thorn for a much-needed walk, the Johnson family hit the road, ready to finish their journey. David was still in a sore mood, choosing to finish the trip by following them on his motorcycle that had been previously attached to the back of the car.
Max wished his son would wear a helmet so he wouldn’t hurt himself, but at least with all those layers of dark clothing, he wore his skin would be protected. Little victories mattered more when parenting his sons.
Riding the bike across the winding roads made David feel like he could actually breathe again. Being in the car for hours had been suffocating, but now the wind was blowing through his hair and washing away his worries. It had been a nightmare convincing his dad to let him get the bike, but all the saving up and part-time jobs he worked to pay for it had made it worth it.
He felt light as air, like he was flying. Someday he wanted to fly away from this life and start something new. It was probably the only good thing about growing up.
It wasn’t long before the family had finally turned onto the dirt road that would lead up the path to Grandma’s house. Max hadn’t been home since his father died, and it was too sad to think about visiting his childhood home without the welcome hug and smile from his dear dad. However, he felt more prepared for this trip and was more than willing to do this for the sake of his mother. As he drove the car up to the driveway, the sight before him allowed several memories to come flooding back.
The beach house was a product of another era, built in the 1940s not too long before Max had been born. The outside was a bright teal with white trim and plenty of windows lining the outside to bring in light. The gravel path to the house was lined with flower bushes, bursting with life and color thanks to Grandma Johnson’s amazing gardening skills. Out on the porch was a pair of wicker lounge chairs, one of which showing less wear than the other on account of Grandpa Johnson no longer being around to use it.
After passing miles of graffiti, trash, and local troublemakers on the streets of Santa Carla, Max was relieved to see this adorable, welcoming sight.
“Look, Thorn! There’s a big yard for you to run in!” Marko exclaimed, eagerly petting his dog as he got a good look at the space. Growing up in an apartment had deprived the Johnson boys a chance to have a backyard to play in when they grew up, so it was certainly a welcome change for Marko. He could already imagine playing catch with Thorn or lounging outside in the sunshine while reading one of the many books he had brought to enjoy over the summer.
As David pulled up the driveway on his bike, all he could think was how overly bright it all felt. Everything about this house gave him a migraine, and he felt like he needed sunglasses just to look at it all. He made a mental note to buy some blackout curtains as soon as possible because there was no way in hell he was waking up to the hot, California sun in his face every morning.
“Home sweet home! I’m glad to see this place hasn’t changed a bit!” Max said cheerfully as he stepped out of the car. He popped the trunk to start unloading suitcases, expecting the boys to help with the work. Marko simply grabbed his own suitcase and Thorn’s food bowl while David walked past his father, completely ignoring the silent request for help.
There was definitely hope for Marko in this new situation, but it was going to be a rough start with David.
“There are my boys!” a raspy, feminine voice called from the porch.
Out stood Grandma (or Widow Johnson as the locals referred to her), a friendly old woman with a long braid of silver hair and a warm smile on her face. Just as her home was, the widow’s appearance was from another time. She was dressed in a floral house frock, a stark, white apron, a necklace of shimmery pearls, and dark blue house slippers. It was all something that looked like it was straight out of a 1950s catalog. The only modern accessory she had was the cane she walked with, no doubt given by her doctor after her surgery.
“Hiya, Mom! It’s so good to see you!” Max greeted his mother as he made his way up the steps of the porch. Even with a bag in each hand he still managed to give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “Why don’t you go sit down, we’ll have everything inside soon”.
“Oh hush, Max. I’m old, not bedridden. I can walk and talk just fine, thank you” she insisted, giving her son a playful pat on the shoulder. She never liked being reminded of her age, and she wouldn’t let things like a silly old cane stop her from feeling young.
“Why as I live and breathe, is that my grandbaby Marko?” she exclaimed. The last time she had seen the youngest Johnson boy, he was missing his two front teeth and had a teddy bear that was scuffed up from all the times he dragged it around the park. Now he was the same height as her and looked like a strapping, young man.
“Hi, Grandma!” Marko exclaimed, running up to her with the stuff still in his hands. He had missed her quite a bit, as she was definitely nice to visit during the holidays.
“Oh my goodness, look at your beautiful hair! You’re the perfect image of a cherub, my boy” she cooed, giving his cheek a gentle squeeze. Marko had long since stopped going to get haircuts, preferring to grow out his blond curls into the popular mullet style all the other kids at school were rocking. Between that and his boyish-looking face, he was often complimented for his appearance, and it never failed to put a bashful smile on his face.
Max and Marko made their way inside, leaving the widow to greet her eldest grandson. Seeing David was a bit more of a shock for the old woman, as she wasn’t expecting to see such a drastic change in style for him. She remembered Max talking to her over the phone about this phase David was going through, but it was still quite the surprise.
Still, a new fashion statement didn’t change a grandmother’s love.
“My little Davey! Hello, Sweetheart!” she greeted him, holding her arms out for a hug. For a moment, David paused, caught off guard by such a positive reaction despite how he looked. He now felt like an asshole for calling her an old fossil on the ride over. Maybe she’d be cooler than he anticipated.
“Nice to see ya, Grandma,” David said with the faintest smile. His hug was brief, as he still wanted to get inside and out of the sun.
The interior of Grandma’s house was not at all what the two brothers were expecting. While some things were unsurprising like lace doilies on tables, fresh-cut flowers in vases, and old-fashioned furniture in each room, other features did not at all fit the aesthetic.
Lined up in the main hall of the home were displays of suits of armor, all polished and shining a bright silver in the light. Each piece came from a different era in time and a different part of the world. Why on Earth did a sweet, old lady have these?
“That’s nothing! You should see what I got in the study!” Grandma said, acting as if she knew just what her grandsons were thinking when they saw her decor.
She ushered the two into the neighboring room. A quick pull of the double doors opened up a path to an entirely different section. As children, Marko and David were not allowed in their Grandma’s study for unknown reasons. Now looking at what was inside, they understood why that was.
Almost every inch of the walls was covered with some kind of weaponry. Battle axes, shields, muskets, spiked flails, spears, throwing stars, and plenty of swords neatly hung on the walls. The only normal thing in this room was the mahogany desk and set of bookcases towards the back of the room. Even then, the desk had a long dagger, a rag, and a tin of polish spread across it, so it seemed that Grandma had more work to hang on the walls.
“What did we move into, a Medieval Times production?” David asked, still very surprised by all these weapons. He could definitely see why this room made his father nervous when he was younger. If he or Marko had gotten their little hands on any of these, it could have led to a hospital trip.
“I studied ancient history before I settled down with your grandfather. I had a particular fondness for military weaponry from different cultures, so I started a collection to live through the history myself”
Grandma’s eyes sparkled as she gazed at her treasures. She had a thirst for knowledge that she was always working to quench. Caring for the armor and weapons made her feel like she was preserving a forgotten era.
“I kept it all locked up so Max wouldn’t hurt himself when he was little. Then I did the same for you boys! But I’m sure you’re both smart enough now to not poke an eye out with these”
“I don’t know, Marko is pretty drawn to shiny things. It’s like living with a bird” David joked, earning a playful shove from his brother.
The rest of the house had a similar appearance, old lady chic with a dash of crazy weaponry. It was definitely an interesting mix. Grandma gave them a rundown of the rules. Only listen to music with headphones so the noise wouldn’t be too distracting, pick up after yourself and go run errands on certain days for her. It was all pretty understandable until she dropped a bomb on the two teens.
“Oh! If you want to watch tv, I’m afraid we only get the weather channel and the history channel here. Don’t need to see any of that other nonsense. It’ll rot your brains while they’re still young”
David simply scoffed, but the look of utter horror on Marko’s face was indescribable. All those music videos he was looking forward to seeing on MTV were now just out of reach.
Tumblr media
It had taken the Johnson family the rest of the day, but with a little hard work, they were unpacked and settled into their home for the summer. Max had made it very clear that the boys needed to take care of their rooms since it was in their grandmother’s house. He also expected them to be on standby whenever she needed help with chores on account of her recovery. She had assured them that it wouldn’t be too much on account of her being a tough gal.
Grandma had made a casserole prior to their arrival that day, so dinner was one less thing to worry about. While Marko inhaled his serving and eagerly fed some delicious bites of food to Thorn under the table, David had been very picky, tapping his fork against the meal instead of eating it. Max could still sense the resentment from his son.
It would be best to talk about this now and air out some problems before they were bottled up and turned into something worse.
“Marko, could you please take Thorn out around the house? He needs to do his business before bed” Max asked the younger son. With a quick nod, Marko got up to put his plate in the sink and grab Thorn’s leash. When he and the pup were out the door, Max put his full attention on David.
“Let’s not beat around the bush here. I know you’re still very unhappy, David. That you resent me for this” Max started, putting his silverware down on his now empty plate. “However, I need you to improve your attitude while we’re here for the summer. Your grandmother is being very generous to us right now. Be mad if you want now, but this will help you in the long run. You could get a part-time job, make some money, and stop being cooped up in your room all day. I’m just thinking of what’s best for you”.
David felt his blood boil hearing his father say that.
“Was it best for me to take me away from my friends? My home? Was it good to take me from the counselor I was seeing at school? I was gonna get recommended a really good therapist, and now that plan is fucked up”. It hurt so much to say these things out loud. David was in deep pain and while he would never dare admit it, he would often go to sleep with tears in his eyes. He felt so lost and scared, and his father was only making it worse.
“David, please don’t say th-”
“NO. Don’t you dare say I need to watch my language or that you know how I feel or other bullshit like that!” David cut him off. His fists were clenched and pressed firmly against the kitchen table. “I hate waking up in the morning because I know all I’ll get is shit about how I gotta grow up and get my act together. I just want to be a kid, and you’re giving me all these expectations I can’t meet. I don’t know how to make you happy when everything I do is wrong! I’m not good enough for you! ”
Tears splashed onto the empty plate below, but David’s face only expressed anger, not sadness. Max felt his heart ache for his child.
“Son-”
“Forget it. I’m going to bed.”
With a toss of his napkin and a hard slam of his chair against the table, David stomped off, thoroughly exhausted from the emotional outburst. All the pain that had built up was finally starting to come out. He felt like such a failure as Max’s son, and even after he expressed his raw emotions, he knew later on Max would want to keep talking about this.
How could that man expect David to speed up his transition into adulthood and still accept treatment like a child at the same time?
David rushed up the stairs and quickly escaped into his new room. With a good, hard slam of the door, he threw himself on the bed, groaning loudly from the tenseness he was feeling. He didn’t even bother to wipe off his eye makeup or change into pajamas. He just wanted to sleep and forget this day even happened.
His eyes were sore from the silent crying, but David eventually found himself slipping into sleep. The sounds of the distant waves and light breeze made for nice white noise. As the boy felt unconsciousness take over, he could have sworn one of the sounds he heard out the window seemed a lot like the sound of..........wings fluttering.

Hello, I just wanted to talk about my girl Piper Mclean again about my own personal opinions about how I feel about the "hate" towards her character. I'm only going to talk about one of the reasons why people don't like Piper instead of listing all of it.
Number 1: "Piper backstory and problems aren't that serious." Aside from the writing about her race, I understand why people had a problem with Piper personal issues and that it's nowhere near as traumatizing and harsh as the other demigods backstories. It also doesn't help that Piper is rich and it makes it much harder for the readers to related to Piper due to her wealth. But honestly despite Piper wealth and high status, her problems feel more down to earth. What I mean is that Piper's dad ignore her despite him having good intentions of not wanting Piper to get involved with his rich lifestyle. He still neglected her and didn't listen to her when she wanted to know more about their culture. Also people said that Piper a brat for not wanting the gifts her dad gave her and not appreciating her wealthy lifestyle. Piper never wanted those gifts from her dad, she wanted to spend time with him and learn about their native culture together. That's not being a spolied brat and that a child wanted to bond with their parent. Piper was lonely, she didn't have friends and her dad didn't spend time with her. Also Piper wealthy lifestyle wasn't really all that pretty and nice either. Piper clearly didn't like going to the rich schools her dad made her go to. All of the girls made fun of her appearance and shamed her for it (they were probably lowkey racist too). Which is not good for a child self esteem. Piper problems are more lowkey then the others, being neglected by your parent, feeling alone because of your parent neglect, and being judged by your peers for being different. Me personally these are issues I can related to then the other demigods characters. What do you think?
I don't personally see Piper's problems as less than or more than the others whether in terms of relatability or not. The wealth and privilege argument is almost a non-issue given how little it actually matters to the plot and how Piper relates to other characters. Piper is not written as rich the way Rachel Elizabeth Dare is written as rich - Rachel actively acknowledges her privilege and it motivates her to actually help the world. Annabeth calls her out on it, Percy thinks about it, and Rachel talks about it. Meanwhile it's hardly mentioned unless in passing for Piper, and it's more of a side effect of her father being a movie star and her being emotionally neglected.
Of the seven - Hazel has the trauma of literally dying, being abused by her mother, general period-specific racism and sexism, etc. Frank has a dead beloved parent, an emotionally distant grandmother, and social pressure singling him out for not acting like he "should". Leo has his mother dying in front of him, his family abandoning him, systemic abuse and racism through the foster care system, etc. Percy was in an abusive household for many years, suffered systemic abuse through multiple boarding schools, and has lived through the Titan War and has all that extra ptsd, has seen friends die, etc. Annabeth had an emotionally neglectful father, suffered enough with her stepfamily that she ran away, lived on the streets with other young kids for several months, watched a close friend die/get turned into a tree at the age of 7, and has the war ptsd and trauma from being betrayed by her older brother figure in Luke, and having everything she loves stripped from her over and over. Jason has lost his memory, and only has hazy recollections, struggles with his identity, and rediscovers his sister, has to relive the traumatic story of his abusive dead mother, and is quickly thrust into probably the most horribly stressful environment for a recovering amnesiac.
Piper has an emotionally neglectful/distant parent and her internal monologue points out that she does suffer from systemic racism. She has the unique trauma of realizing that her first relationship has been a complete fabrication and one day her boyfriend has no idea who she is, was told by her father that she had a deadbeat mother only to find that her mother is literally the personification of all the concepts (glamour, beauty, passion) that she distrusts in her father's industry, and that she cannot tell her father any of this because it would literally break his mind and soul, after *checks notes* her father is kidnapped and used as a hostage to get her to betray her only friends.
I'd say her trauma is enough to give anybody some absolutely wicked trust issues and paranoia. Not to mention it lines up pretty closely with the traumatic backstory beats the other demigods have. Even if we were keeping score, which we're not, because trauma and suffering does not have to be equivalent to be equally valid, Piper has been relentlessly bullied like Percy and Hazel, has been distanced from her parent by being sent away to schools like Percy, has trauma related to her godly parent's domain like Frank, Leo, and Hazel, suffers from systemic racism like Leo and Hazel do, and unlike the others who have living mortal family who are in on the secret, Piper has no one on the outside.
I don't know that she's more or less relatable than the others, because they all have unique trauma that others will identify with more, but I know that she doesn't have "less problems" than the others.

I thought of you when the Qilin bowed to Dumbledore. I went "Ha, Blair's going to hate this."
Oh my goodness anon. You do me great honor. And yes, yes, I hate it. The saddest part is that I thought this movie was actually pretty good. Better than the second film, not quite as good as the first. It had some genuinely beautiful moments, some others not so great. (Lally needs to be mainstay. She's such a delight, they better not bench her like they did to Tina, or kill her off like they did Leta.)
Truly, it was shaping up to be a great movie. But then they did that. And completely fumbled the climax.
I kid you not, when the Qilin bowed to Dumbledore I started laughing so hard that I accidentally woke up my kitty. I had to pause the movie, as I laughed for a full minute, give or take. Something tells me that I'm not supposed to laugh at that moment. That it's supposed to be poignant and powerful. But seriously, seriously. Seriously. This movie expects me to buy that Albus War Crimes Abuse Apologist Child Groomer Dumbledore (Those are his middle names, right?) is pure of heart...? Give me a break, Rowling.
First of all, nobody is. Everyone has flaws, everyone's got demons. Not being pure doesn't mean you aren't a good person. This is just like the idea that only the pure of heart can cast a Patronus. Even if I accept the existence of "pure hearts," that is still balderdash of the highest caliber - fucking Umbridge could cast a Patronus. Even children aren't pure of heart, though I could be a bit more understanding if that was the take the series went with. You can call this a personal belief on my part, and fine, it is...but the movie says so too. Literally in the very scene when they establish the Qilin's powers, Lally clarifies that obviously, no one is actually pure-hearted. This is contradictory to what they go with later. Fine, for the sake of argument, let's say I accept that in this world, some people just have totally pure hearts.
But do not try to tell me that Albus Dumbledore is one of them. Albus Dumbledore, who plotted a fascist takeover with Grindelwald, who was complicit in the imprisonment of his sister and is at least indirectly responsible for her death (all of which the movie itself discusses) who refused to face Grindelwald out of shame, who never warned anyone about young Tom Riddle's behavior, who kidnapped infant Harry and then imprisoned him with abusive relatives, who left Sirius to rot in prison, who lied to Harry for years and groomed him into becoming a martyr at seventeen, who employed and constantly defended an unrepentant child abuser, and guilted Harry when he complained, who showed blatant favoritism for Order families, who hired a fraud to teach at Hogwarts for no other reason than to expose him, who kept the truth about the prophecy from Harry for years, who forced Sirius to live in the house he was abused in...
...Need I go on?
This man is not pure of heart. I recognize that I am pretty biased as a Dumbledore-Anti and one could make a case for him being more of a mixed bag. Fine, I acknowledge that one could make that case, that Dumbledore is a character who is more in the gray. I don't agree, but I get why people might see him as such. But someone who falls into shades of gray is not "pure of heart." That's the entire point. Not that it even matters because, as we seen, the Qilin itself is not infallible, nor do I understand why anyone thinks it would be? It's still a living creature. (Or a dead one, in Grindelwald's case.) It can be influenced just like anyone else. It's a baby for goodness' sake. Animals can be trained. Animals can be replaced with duplicates - would anyone apart from Newt be able to spot a dressed up fawn from a real Qilin? How many wizards on average even known what a Qilin is? Animals can also make mistakes just like humans - and Newt's Qilin clearly did.
But you know what's even worse than that? There's someone else at that ceremony who the Qilin should have bowed to. Someone better. In hindsight, it feels very obvious. The Qilin should have bowed to Jacob. No, but seriously, think about it. How many times did this movie make a point to mention how big Jacob's heart is, what a good person he is? I could have accepted this. Even moments before the Qilin takes her bow, Dumbledore himself is complimenting Jacob. Why doesn't the Qilin sense the purity in Jacob's heart? If she had bowed to him...can you imagine it? A Qilin bowing to a muggle, in front of all those people? Would leave all of Grindelwald's rhetoric totally discredited. Especially since he had just tortured said muggle with an illegal curse no less, but I guess everyone just ignored that?  It would do far more damage to his cause.
I feel very strongly about this.

What are some headcanons (if any) that you have about Steve and Bucky and their friendship?
When I first approached this answer, I got a bit of a deer-in-the-headlights feeling, because there are so many of them - particularly because I write a lot of AUs, which is basically a headcanon writ large. But for that sort of thing, I'll just drop a link to my fics on AO3.
But here's a list of headcanons (some major, some minor) I have that aren't tied to a specific AU, and are canon-compliant (with the movies; I don't really give the same weight to stuff from the comics or other sources, though I might draw inspiration from there):
George Barnes and Joseph Rogers were brothers-in-arms in WWI, and became best friends. Joseph died when George's gas mask got broken, and then they were hit with mustard gas. Joseph gave George his and covered him with his body to protect him. Hearing this story growing up, Steve promised himself that if he were ever in a position to do the same, he would make the same sacrifice his father did (hence throwing himself onto a grenade without a second thought in Basic).
Because of George and Joseph's friendship, the Barneses became family friends with Sarah Rogers and helped her out as much as they could, which is how Steve and Bucky originally met.
Steve's favorite color is blue; Bucky's favorite color is red.
Steve drinks his coffee black. Bucky has a massive sweet tooth, though he didn't particularly like chocolate; in the war, he would trade the chocolate from his rations with the other Howlies. Post-Winter Soldier, however, Bucky will happily devour anything sweet, chocolate or not.
[I don't know if this counts as a headcanon or not, but Steve's love language is acts of service and Bucky's is touch.]
Steve smells really nice and gives the best hugs ^/////^
Steve's favorite season is spring, because that's when everything starts coming to life again, and the weather finally begins to warm up. Pre-Winter Soldier, Bucky's favorite season was winter, because that was the season for snow, Christmas, and several family birthdays including his own. Post-Winter Soldier, his favorite season is summer, the season of warmth and light.
Steve and Bucky both know how to knit and sew, in order to cut costs during the Depression, though their skills have probably gotten a bit rusty since then, besides minor mending.
The Barnes family was always very physically affectionate, sharing hugs and kisses all around. The Rogers family was more reserved, but after spending so much time around Bucky and his family, Steve became quite comfortable with that sort of thing too.
Steve did in fact move in with Bucky after his mother died, and they lived together until the war.
After the serum and Hydra experimentation, Steve's body temperature tends to run a little high and Bucky's tends to run a little low. Cue cuddling scenes! :3
Just as Steve calls Bucky "Buck," Bucky calls him "Stevie." It started as a joke, but it stuck.
Bucky has an uncle named James, which is why he goes by his middle name instead.
Steve's cooking is rather boring; he sticks to like five recipes and just cooks them over and over again. Bucky can follow a recipe, but when left without supervision is liable to mess something up.
Bucky has four sisters. He's the oldest. His oldest sister, Becca, is two years younger than him. (But I...haven't really thought through any of the others ^^')
After breaking free of Hydra's control, Bucky struggles with self-harm and suicidal thoughts related to the guilt and shame he feels over what he was made to do.
Because of the metal arm, Bucky has a lot of trouble with back and shoulder pain, to the point he needs regular chiropractic and massage work done on it. It gets much better after he gets the vibranium arm, but still isn't perfect.
Steve is really good at giving back rubs and shoulder massages. The Howling Commandos used to come up with excuses for why they needed regular massages from him, and he was too nice to say no.
Before the war, Bucky was something of a ladies' man. After the Winter Soldier, however, he doesn't end up romantically with anyone. It's hard for him to let himself be that vulnerable with anyone, and even harder to find anyone who could relate to everything he's been through, so he just decides not to bother. His bonds with his closest friends and their families are enough.
Steve and Bucky have almost a sixth sense about when the other is in serious danger, almost like twins. It's not a superpower or anything; they've had this since they were kids, which is how Bucky was able to come to Steve's rescue so many times. This also comes into play when Bucky is at his lowest; Steve starts feeling like something is off when Bucky is on the verge of killing himself.
When hugging or lying side by side, Steve still likes to tuck his head under Bucky's chin, like he used to when he was much smaller.
But the most important headcanon of all...
The Two Steves Theory:
This headcanon is one that @sergeanttomycaptain and I came up with in the first half-hour after seeing Endgame for the first time, and in my mind remains the only way to be truly satisfied with Steve's ending. If you'd rather read it in story format, you can read my fic "Let This One Remain."
But in short, here's how it works:
Everything in the movie happens the same way it does. It's just that they cut five minutes too early. What you should have seen was that after old!Steve gives the shield to Sam, suddenly they hear someone else coming up behind them. It's another Steve. Or should I say, the same Steve who just took the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir back in time. The first Steve.
This Steve, or Steve Prime as I like to call him, explains that he went back in time and put the Stones back as the plan was. He considered going to some point where he could settle down with Peggy and live the life he'd always wanted...but ultimately, he realized that actually wasn't what he wanted after all. He wasn't the same person he'd been in WWII when he'd fallen in love with Peggy, and he was no longer right for her. He might not always feel like he belongs in the 21st century, even still, but he recognizes as he travels back and forth through time that he wouldn't belong in the 1940s either. Besides, he's built a life for himself in the 21st century now. He has friends there. He has Bucky. He has Sharon. And that's actually where he wants to live out his days.
But, before going back as planned, he made one final trip to London in 1945, and talked to the version of himself who was sitting in that bar, mourning Bucky. He told that Steve that Bucky was still alive and captured, and that he needed to give his coordinates to Peggy when he brought the plane down, so they could find him sooner and they could go rescue Bucky. Then Steve Prime goes back to where he left Bucky and Sam waiting.
So old!Steve is actually the one that Steve Prime went to talk to. Peggy and Howard were able to find him, and then they rescued Bucky before he could be completely turned into the Winter Soldier. They went back to the States, Steve married Peggy, they had children...in short, they lived a full, happy life. The scene at the end where Steve and Peggy are dancing? That's that Steve.
Steve Prime, meanwhile, comes back to live with his friends, and to try to pick up where he left off with Sharon, now that she's been un-Snapped. Sam takes up the mantle of Captain America, and Steve retires.
And they all lived happily ever after.

Lucifer: Stays in HoL but possibly renovates it a little bit to have more privacy. (as a compromise in case you reaaally didn't want to stay there - now you have your own bathroom + a small kitchen)
His brothers still depend on him so you continue to share family moments. (which isn't too bad, Lucifer is usually busy so sometimes you might actually want their company) Though now you get noticeably more alone time together - which makes him realize how it would've been a good idea to actually move out (he'd immediately regret that tho because he very care family).
Helps out with chores most of the time. Going OUT on dates is a must at least once a week or so otherwise both of you lose your minds. Nothing else changes, really. Mammon: More likely to move in with you in the human world but would (slightly) prefer the Devildom. (he'd only do that tho if he can secure a spot in a safer area for your sake. even if you are a powerful sorcerer.) Paying rent&bills is going to require hustle which might be a reason why you have to move back into HoL. (though...in canon if he is in love with u, u get rich even if u do nothing...so that'd be handy in this case) Definitely enjoys how he gets to keep you for himself and he is living for the small moments with you (such as morning cuddles) but also! with you everything is much more fun, even if both of you work multiple shifts; after each day you are so tired you can barely watch a movie. Both of you visit HoL on the regular.
Leviathan: The only reason he'd do it is to get more alone time with you. Would take ages to actually do it, but he'd prefer to live in the human world with you (it's safer + its better for anime and gaming). (Lucifer is against the idea which also slows down the process but he eventually gives in). You'd probably have an apartment in a city with fast internet connection (dw he's done his research) and where you can afford rent. He works from home (either esports or programming) so he is always there to greet you when you get home. Decorates the entire apartment with figurines and posters plus there is never enough space for him. Henry is there also. You'd think he cooks / bakes and you'd be wrong. 92% of the time it's take-out food time. Definitely needs help with chores at first but gets the hang of it easily. Occasionally you visit HoL.
Satan: Definitely would rather moving out and renting an apartment. I think he'd prefer the human world. I feel like he'd want to change cities often (every 3-5 yrs or so). He is a curious demon and there is always so much to learn about humans. Very domestic. Does the chores and he does them well. You can never complain. Somehow can balance work & you & chores. (probably needs explanation sometimes with equipment he isn't familiar with but we can excuse that) Every weekend is date weekend where you learn something new about each other and the culture of the country. Asmo visits every month or so & stays for ~3 days.
Asmodeus: hmm...i think he'd let you decide on the realm but he picks the exact location. He picks a very busy area with rich nightlife, but to your surprise he only participates like a couple of times a week, usually with you. Listen he adores being with you. Posts about your life together very often. Would start a new vlogging channel if you'd let him. Rent & bills are No Big Deal, though at first he is shocked at how expensive they are. Is fine with most of the chores but since he refuses to do the dishes, when it's him on dinner duty you both go on a date instead. Beelzebub: Refuses to move out if Belphie can't come, unless it's literally the house next to HoL. (/closest to. i'm not sure if they have like. a close neighbour) Rather domestic, does the chores and puts in work to get the bills. Sometimes you might not find him at home - he is either getting groceries or decided to visit Belphie. Would rather have a movie night with you than going out on a date. Depending on what kind of house it is, he might pick up gardening as a hobby. Belphegor: Similar to his twin he'd prefer staying close to him if possible, but if that can't happen he's fine with moving in with you in the human world. (yes he prefers that over the Devildom) Lucifer doesn't like this idea at all so you probably need to convince him.
Bills might be an issue as he keeps losing jobs but you can't really blame him for that, can you. Regaring chores, he only does the groceries, vacuuming, laundry, and changing sheets, everything else is up to you. Every Sunday you spend sleeping in & cuddling. Beelzebub visits you every week, usually on the weekends.
The rest of the characters are under the cut... long post
Barbatos: Hm... I think you'd probably need to move in the castle, or a small apartment very near. It is because of his job obviously, can't help it.
As he is the royal butler I imagine you wouldn't need to worry about bills / rent because. Yeah. Chores, on the other hand, fall on you very often - sometimes his job requires him to be there 24 hours a day. Even when he has more break time he'd rather not do chores at home as well because then he'd literally have no time left to spend with you. But when he can afford to do them, he definitely helps out & does them better than you (no shame in that tho he does this for a living)
Diavolo: Pretty obviously you move in the castle. No rent & no chores to worry about unless you are desperate to help Barbatos out.
He'd spend literally all his time with you if he could & Lucifer often scolds him for it. Neglecting work isn't a good idea right.
Every weekend there is something new to do, he spends lots of time thinking about how you are going to spend it. Also this would be the first time(s) you'd actually see him stress about work, since you live close enough to him now. (obviously he mentioned it many times before but that's a different experience) Solomon: Honestly you are free to choose where you'd want to live as he'd follow you anywhere.
Tbh I'm not sure about his finances but I'd like to imagine you don't have to worry about paying the bills. (as in: you have to work too if possible but that's ok)
He does his chores but he does them his way. If you do them differently he might comment but usually he just lets you be. It's entertaining to learn how many different ways there are to,,, doing dishes.
Simeon: Definitely prefers the Celestial Realm & I don't think there is much you can do to negotiate if you want to live with him. Similar to Solomon, paychecks aren't a big deal but it's something to consider; if possible you'd need to work to help out.
He has his favourite chores to do but occasionally he helps out with others as well, especially if he sees you might struggle / hate one.
a/n: for those wondering... no we didn't move in together yet because i'm still waiting for my vaccine... but once it's done we're ready<3 i'm a little bit nervous ngl but i'm so excited also dfgh

makai
Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x f!MC (Dr. Brooke Spiers) Word Count: 3.4k Rating: 18+ (NSFW - minors dni) Author's Note: makai (mah-kigh) - one of the four key directions on Oahu, but used on all Hawaiian Islands; makai means "toward the ocean".
Premise: A follow-up fic to this text exchange. Ethan and Brooke meet for a little pre-planned Hawaiian rendezvous.
Tumblr media
Hey, I’m here. Where you at?
Brooke taps out the message on her cell phone, keeping one eye on the almost-empty lobby.
It's late now - late for check-in, late for milling around, late, it seems, for Hawaii itself - and she'd be lying to herself if she said she wasn't feeling a bit sleepy—a bit like, maybe, she should be getting up for a six AM shift in Boston after having gotten a good seven hours of sleep the night before?
Rather than waiting for her elderly boyfriend to meet her for a late-night swim - and a little more, hopefully - after sleeping a total of five half-lucid hours on an airplane in the last twenty-four hour period.
She's about to text him again, when she hears a voice from behind her.
"Christ, enough with the texting already."
Whirling around, she can't help the grin that splits her cheeks at the sight of him. Without responding, she throws her arms around his neck, squeezing him in an impromptu hug. His hair is a little damp and appears freshly washed and there's the sharp, pleasant, and familiar smell of his cologne that she inhales when she presses her body to his.
He seems almost nonplussed at her public and spontaneous affection, his arms staying at his sides for a beat longer than they should, before he returns her embrace. She giggles as he even takes her for a half spin, kissing her neck before setting her down, hands lingering at her hips.
"Well, aren't you in a good mood," he comments, a smile playing at the corners of his lips.
She shrugs, giving him a cheeky grin. "It's nice to see you. Plus," she adds, taking his hand and interlocking her fingers with his as she starts to walk, "I'm in vacation mode, so you're going to a get a much better version of me for the next few days."
He allows her to lead him out of the lobby and to the stone pathway that will eventually take them down to the beach.
"I like the version I get at home," he remarks once they're in the open air, which smells like hibiscus and coconut and the reminiscent warmth of the sun still emanating from the stones.
As they walk, he tugs her closer and puts his arm over her shoulders. She smiles up at him as she wraps her arm around his waist. He returns it, staring down at her with an inscrutable look, but one that causes a bloom of warmth to start in her chest and work its way outwards.
"It's nice to be somewhere different, though." Resting her head on his shoulder, they continue to amble down the path. "I like us at home, too, but…" She trails off with a shrug. "We work a lot. And don't see each other outside of work enough. I mean, I thought with you suspended I'd at least get a date night, then you had to go and get your freaking job back!"
He throws his head back and laughs, a loud, head-shaking, self-deprecating thing.
"Oh god, I've really done you wrong, haven't I?"
"Yes!" she insists, though she can't stop her own giggles. "Not even a dinner out. Our first movie in months was on the private jet that Vik got me."
Ethan rubs his chin thoughtfully. "I haven't gotten you a private jet yet?"
"Nope." Her hair tosses against her cheeks as she shakes her head, unable to keep the smile off her face. She loves teasing him, she loves being away with him, she loves—she cuts her thoughts short and focuses on their banter. "For shame, sir."
He glances at her and she sees the heat in his gaze as she calls him "sir". She bites her lip and looks up at him innocently. His eyes go from hers down to her lip in an instant and she laughs again.
"You're like one of Pavlov's dogs, I swear." Breaking free from him, she jogs lightly ahead of him down the path, her sandals slapping the pavement with her movements. "Anyway, your old bones are slowing me down. Keep up!" She takes off towards the beach, her sundress whipping around her legs, even as she can hear his bit off curse from behind her.
"I'm not running!" he calls, his voice growing distant as she puts more space between them.
"Your loss!" she yells over her shoulder, before turning around and jogging backwards to tease him even more. She screams as she sees him gaining speed quickly and her shrieks turn into hysterical giggles as he ducks down and lifts her effortlessly over his shoulder, continuing on without breaking his stride.
She buries her face in the thin cotton of his shirt so that she doesn’t wake up all the other sleepy inhabitants of their resort with her giddy snorts, especially when he playfully smacks her butt as he carries her steadily to the beach. Soon, she feels his steps change as his feet sink into the soft sand.
"Wow." His voice is soft and, even though it's coming from somewhere near her rump, it still carries over to where she is, hanging securely off his shoulder.
"I want to see!" She squirms and he grips her bottom, holding her still as he reaches up with his other hand. She feels him wriggle his finger under the heel strap of her sandals and she stills, waiting as he removes first one and then the other. Leaning forward, he places her down gently and she immediately wiggles her toes in the warm, fine sand before whirling around to take in the view.
"Oh, wow," she breathes as well, because truly there isn't another word for it.
The moonlight reflects off the dark surface of the waves, illuminating the gentle ebb and flow of the tide. Dark shadows on the horizon appear to be mountains or something in the distance - she hadn't had a chance to check out the beach in the daytime upon their arrival, so she's just seeing it now for the first time, perhaps not in all its colourful splendour, but still, majestic and beautiful in its own right.
And the stars - Brooke can't remember the last time she'd seen so many of them. They sparkle in the inky blue firmament like someone had tossed an infinity of tiny diamonds on a velvet tray. She breathes in the salty sweet air deeply as her and Ethan take in the view together, silently, for a moment.
"Thank you for asking me to come here with you," Ethan says quietly, eyes still on the sea and the sky. "I didn't realize how much I needed this… this quiet beauty. This moment of serenity."
She quirks a smile at him, taking his hand in hers. He looks down at their intertwined fingers and then back up at her face, his eyes warm and soft, the pale blue glistening in the moonlight.
"I did," she tells him simply with a little shrug, still smiling up at him.
He looks at her for another beat, his eyes conveying a message that only her heart understands, then he turns to her, stroking her cheek softly with his knuckles, before leaning in to place a soft kiss on her lips.
She cups his cheeks in her hands and returns it, keeping it soft, sweet, open-mouthed and warm. After a moment, she pulls back and looks up at him, the smile back on her face. It’s silly, but it almost feels like a permanent fixture tonight; one she can't get rid of even if she tries.
He’s watching her again, eyes heavy and heated, even in the glowing light of the moon. He slides his thumbs over her cheekbones in a light caress. "Brooke, I—"
Even though they’ve gone down this road many times before - the incomplete sentences, the longing looks, the words that are felt but not said - Brooke still feels her breath catch and her heart rate increase as she waits.
They stay suspended like that for a moment, the waves and the moon their only companions, when suddenly the call of a night bird, tropical and unfamiliar, breaks them from their reverie.
Ethan looks up and Brooke looks away, disappointed - though not surprised - that the moment got away from them again without any new revelations.
“Looks like we have company,” Ethan remarks, his voice carefully composed, even as he pulls her closer, rubbing her bare arms with his hands.
“Well,” Brooke replies, still determined to make this a good night, “as long as our only company is avian...” She pulls away from him, reaching up and teasing at the straps of her sundress. “What do you say we go for a swim?”
Biting back a smirk, he looks back and forth across the long expanse of beach. Her gaze follows his, ensuring along with him that they truly are alone. As much as she thrives on the spontaneity of a moment like this, she'd rather not have any of their colleagues - or any guest for that matter - see her naked. Which is exactly what she plans on being in due course.
“Looks pretty quiet.” His gaze locks in on hers again. “No?”
She nods, teeth catching at her bottom lip as she slowly backs up towards the water, pulling the straps of her dress down to fall on her upper arms. “Indeed it does, Dr Ramsey.” She pulls one arm out and then the other, leaving the dress clinging to the tops of her breasts. She continues to step backwards until her feet hit the shoreline, warm, frothy waves caressing her ankles. She laughs in delight and looks down, sliding around in the wet sand.
Ethan is closing in on her, his shirt already off. She sees he’s holding her sandals and his shoes in one hand, shirt slung over his arm.
“How’s the water?” he asks, though his eyes are still on the beach, as though he’s looking for something.
When she realizes his apparent destination, she can't help but shake her head fondly - he's walked over to one of the resort chairs, stacked up neatly for the evening, and is placing their shoes and his shirt on the pile.
Heaven forbid they get sand on them, she thinks, unable to stop the swell of affection she feels for her fastidious man.
Making her way over to him, she shimmies the dress up and over her head.
“Space for one more thing?” she asks innocently waiting for him to turn to look at her.
When he does, she gets immediate gratification at his dumbstruck look.
She had foregone a bra completely, so she watches as he takes her in from head to toe, nipples already stiffening in the exposed night air and under his gaze. She'd also pulled out the "special occasion" underwear, a lacy, boy-cut confection that she knew he'd appreciate.
And by the look in his eyes, he seems very appreciative.
Smiling cheekily, she shimmies down the underwear as well, tossing it to him before wading further into the water.
For all her bravado, standing stark naked on a public beach for longer than thirty seconds stretches the limits of her comfort, so it feels nice to seek both warmth and privacy in the languid tropical waves.
She had almost been worried that the water would be cold, but instead it's the perfect temperature - just nice enough to submerge herself in without feeling like she's entering a frigid bath. She wades out a bit deeper until the water just skims the top of her breasts and she turns in time to see Ethan entering the water.
Her heart picks up speed as she admires him, his naked, muscular body limned by the moonlight, walking into the ocean like some sort of reverse Poseidon, his eyes fixated on her and her alone.
Brooke shivers in a way that has nothing to do with water temperature, goosebumps lifting the fine hairs on her arms as she waits for him to get to her. The anticipation is sweet, but not as sweet as seeing him up close, smiling down at her as he collects her in his arms.
Their naked bodies slide together and she instinctively wraps her legs around his waist, feeling his arousal at the crux of her body. She kisses his neck, his jaw, his cheek, as his hands glide down to her bottom to lift her higher.
"This is nice," she murmurs, twining her arms tighter around his neck.
He hums in agreement, stroking her back up and down with one hand as they quietly watch the moon ripple on the horizon.
"I love touching you like this." He presses a kisses to her shoulder, squeezes her tighter. "If I could keep you this way, naked, pressed up against me, your skin on mine—if I could hold you like this forever, I would do it."
"Might be difficult to get work done." Her response is flippant, but his words have struck a chord deep inside her and her heart twangs painfully at the implications.
He snorts. "I don't care. Who needs work."
She pulls back to look at him, affecting a look of shock. "I'm sorry, who are you, and what have you done with Dr. Ethan Ramsey?"
He shakes his head, burying his face in her neck. When he speaks again, his words are muffled against her skin. "Dr. Ramsey has learned more in the past three years than in any of the previous years combined." He pulls back to look at her, one hand still holding her against him securely, the other pushing her damp waves back from her face. "Learned and grown and just—" He shakes his head before continuing. "Just tried to be better. To do better. Thanks to you." He kisses her and she can taste the salt on his lips.
"I can't take all the credit," she whispers against his mouth as they pull apart after a beat.
"Why not?" he whispers back, pressing another salty kiss to her lips. "You do it all the time at work anyway."
"Hey—!" She pulls away indignantly. "It's not my fault I’m the only one who can actually solve our cases—"
He laughs loudly and spins her around, making her lose track of her indignation as she dissolves into helpless giggles.
The warm water swirls over their bodies and she tightens her arms and legs around him. Her giggles inadvertently turn into a soft moan as she feels him, hard against her centre, settled right between her spread legs.
He tucks a kiss below her ear, nipping lightly at her pulse. "I want you so bad," he murmurs, sucking gently on the spot where he bit.
"So what are you waiting for," she breathes, her head lolling back as her hips move restlessly, her body stroking wetly against his length.
"Not in here," he groans, "the bacteria—not good for your—" He grunts as she presses more tightly against him, continuing to rub intimately in a way that has them both moaning.
"Have I ever told you—" She gasps, her breath coming out in short pants. "—how hot it is when you say the word 'bacteria' during sex?"
His response is a muffled groan into her shoulder as her jerky movements become more frantic, chasing the climax that has been inevitable since the first touch of salt water on her bare skin.
It's an odd sensation, the languid warmth of the ocean surrounding them while a different, more intimate, kind of wetness grows between. She misses the feel of him inside her during a moment like this, but there is something strangely, captivatingly erotic about making love this way. Their bodies sliding together in a new sort of intimacy, his rigid heat captured between her velvety folds.
“Ethan, I—” Her voice catches and his fingers tighten on her bottom, holding her to him in a way that hits that exact spot she needs it to. "Ah—ah!" She feels her muscles clench as a wave of pleasure crests…then crashes down over her. She lets out a moan, throwing her head back, the movement lifting her half out the water. Her nipples hit the cooler night air as her breasts emerge from the sea, and the feel of it in contrast to her climax sends prickles of sensation across her skin.
Ethan ducks down, kissing between her breasts as his hips jerk and finally still. He lets out a long groan through clenched teeth and she feels a bloom of warmth between them as she holds his head tightly against her chest. She can feel her heart pounding and his heartbeats echo hers from where his chest is pressed, closer to her stomach.
They hold each other for a protracted beat, the only sounds the crashing waves and their ragged breaths.
"Would you consider that," she finally says, still slightly breathless, "acceptable for my pH balance?"
He snickers deeply into her skin as he wraps his arms around her tighter before releasing her slowly. She allows her body to dip back and float leisurely on the bobbing waves. Letting out a contented sigh, she looks up at the stars, her eyes catching on a streak of light separate from the rest.
"Look!" She sits up quickly and grabs Ethan's arm, pointing at the sky.
He looks up as well and they watch as two, three stars make a quick descent from their position, a trail of sparkles in their wake.
"I've never seen a shooting star," she breathes, mesmerized.
He doesn't reply, so after a minute she glances over at him. He's staring at her, a soft smile tilting the corners of his lips. She can't see his face that well, even in the bright glow of an almost-full moon, but she recognizes the gentleness in his expression, the curve of his cheek as the shadow of a dimple barely appears.
She loves him so much.
She loves him so much that her heart aches with it, like a balloon that's about to pop or a cup that's overflowing.
She loves him for all his flaws, for all his hubris, for the ways he tries to be so good, and for all the ways he fails.
Her eyes well up as she looks at him, the words yearning to tumble from her lips. To tell him that she's always on his side. That he's hers, no matter what. There's no one else and there never will be.
That this is it, for her.
Instead she smiles back at him, albeit a little tremulously, and she leans forward, pushing off with her feet as she wades back to the shore.
He follows her quietly and they dress quickly, clothes awkward and difficult to tug onto their still-wet bodies.
As she grabs her sandals and goes to walk, he grabs her hand to stop her and pulls her into his arms.
They stand there for a bit, quiet and still, and Brooke feels all the little moments that have brought them here swirling around them in a hopeful nostalgia; the promise of things to come, built on a foundation of what they've surpassed.
"Time to sleep?" She looks up at the rumbling sound of his voice, blinking her eyes tiredly without even having realized just how tired she was.
"Mmm," she agrees, pulling away. "Your room or mine?"
He looks askance at her and she groans good-naturedly. "Fine, we'll be good. But see if you last more than one night without me. Just see!" She pokes his shoulder and grins at him and he catches her hand and holds it tightly against his chest, over his heart.
"Meet me for coffee tomorrow morning?" He brings her hand up to his lips and presses a kiss to the palm. "Hawaii has the best—"
"Yes, yes, I know, you talked my ear off about it on the plane, I remember." She shakes her head. "You're so boring I literally don't know how I stand you."
He grins at her and shrugs good-naturedly as they begin the slow walk back to the resort. "I try not to tempt fate too often by asking that very same question."
"Probably for the best." She tilts her head onto him and he drapes his arm around her shoulders. They meander down the path, away from the ocean, in comfortable silence.
She knows, deep down, how he feels about her. And if the final show of her loyalty to him is for her to wait until he's ready to tell her, well, then—
She'll wait.

Retrospective Review - Batman: The Long Halloween Parts 1 and 2
The Long Halloween was definitely an adaptation that I was really looking forward to for a long time. In terms of Batman investigative stories, it ranks right at the top for me. The fact that they were going to emulate the adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns and make this a genuine 2 parter excited me even more. Its definitely one of the best Batman adaptations that have been made. It is an adaptation that does not stick the original comic series like a glue, the way Year One and TDKR did, but it adheres to the general story and spirit of the original story. As a result, it offers something new to the viewer while watching, while simultaneously still feeling like the sort of detective story that the comic was.
What I appreciated about this movie, even on rewatch, is that it is a lot of movie. With the 2 parter combined, its close to 3 hours in run time. And its a film that uses every bit of screen time for character and drama and to build up suspense. This is not a very action driven story. There are some action sequences, but there aren't too many massive set pieces. There are a lot of conversations in these movies. Scenes between Batman and Harvey, Batman and Catwoman, Harvey and Gilda, Gordon and his wife Barbara, Falcone and various members of his family etc... Whereas most films would probably remove a lot of these scenes and give us the barebones that is required for the characters, this movie lingers on character beats, allowing the audience to marinate in the events taking place. This can be dicey if the investigative element is not interesting, but that's where the strength of the source material stands out. The Holiday Killer is genuinely interesting mystery to resolve. And Batman goes through a variety of suspects in trying to find out who is the one responsible. I actually liked majority of the changes that are made in the movie from the source material. They are close enough to the original comic book story, but with different motivations. A lot of the strengths of the comic book story help the movie a lot.
The dichotomy of Gotham being a city where there is the mob, with Falcone and Maroni fighting for control, as well as a slew of freaks like Joker, Poison Ivy, Hatter, Scarecrow etc... is fascinating. You care for Harvey Dent, who is a central character in this drama, but also recognize that there is something not quite right about him. Therefore, when Two-Face comes to be, its not a complete shock. The backstory about Gilda is also deeply affecting quite tragically shocking. I liked that Batman is able to solve the mystery in this version whereas he doesn't really solve the mystery in the comics. It shows his growth as a detective over the course of the movie. In general, there is a vulnerability to this Batman. He's not an expert detective, he can slip and fall when pursuing Catwoman, and he can make incorrect conclusions. It just makes him more believable as a character. I also like that Falcone is really built up as a guy of formidable presence. He's not just a mobster but he has a personality. Basically, this film does a great job of showing the grey shades of the characters, even people like Bruce's parents, who have usually always been painted as good people. Here, you question their past relationship with the Falcones.
There isn't much I don't like. Its a shame that the film doesn't carry over the art style from The Long Halloween which is so iconic, but I get that the character design in the comics may not translate perfectly in the movie. While Selina Kyle/Catwoman plays an integral part in the movie, her motivations aren't very clear for a long time and her appearances feel a little random until that point. I also wish they had stuck a little closer to the source material when it came to Alberto Falcone. That's probably the biggest departure from the source material. That was one aspect of the comic that I missed in the movie. Also, while I think the pacing worked, it can be a little testing at times. Also, for a layman, the film doesn't really give a lot of background to the characters and their relationships. The fact that Selina knows that Bruce is Batman is not something that you would know until its revealed. Same vice versa.
When it comes to the voice action, Jensen Ackles is solid as Batman. He was a better Red Hood in my opinion but he's good as Batman as well. The star for me was Josh Duhamel as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. He's terrific. Billy Burke makes for an excellent Gordon. Naya Rivera was a wonderful Selina/Catwoman. Alastair Duncan as Alfred, Troy Baker as Joker, David Dastmalchian as Calendar Man, and Titus Welliver as Falcone are all excellent. Overall Chris Palmer and Tim Sheridan did a terrific job adapting The Long Halloween, which Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale made so iconic. For me, it ranks towards the top of the Batman pantheon. I'm very excited by the notion that The Batman is following the DNA of The Long Halloween as a detective story. An 8.5/10 for me.

Stargate (1994)
Welcome to the Cult Film Tent Revival my freaky fanatics, prepare yourselves to take the sacrament from across the stars, as we engage in the miraculous works of one of our most beloved Cult Saints, Saint Kurt. Coming to us from the golden age of Sci-fi Adventures, when Hollywood would dump the big bucks into a film so out of this world, we are partaking this evening of 1994's Stargate!
The Message
Every child has an Egypt phase. I remember fondly flipping through my DK Eyewitness guide to ancient Egypt with my Anubis warrior action figure from the movie stargate propped up on my desk. This wasn't even school work, Egypt inspired this young freak to learn outside of the classroom, and Stargate inspired me to look to Egypt in the first place. My father was a military man, as mentioned before, and this film irked him to some degree. He hated that the film was slightly critical of firearms, but mostly he hated that it depicted the high security military installation where he worked unrealistically. You know the high security military installation in the side of Cheyenne Mountain. yeah, that one. I don't know why my father expected a bunch of nerds from Hollywood with not security clearance to have any idea what it looked like in that hyper-secure location, but he did. I suspect after they lost him on the guns he was looking for any reason to hate Stargate, and so, impressionable as I was, I thought for years that this movie was really stupid.
Thank the Gods of Cult that I had the inspiration to give this film a second chance. I have to say, it's a little stupid, but it's not REALLY stupid. Also, Disney's Atlantis is totally just animated Stargate, and that's pretty fucked up.
Stargate is the story of how a big old nerd, whos name is NOT Milo, played by James Spader was enlisted by a bunch of military bad guy types to use his crackpot pseudoscience egyptology crap to decipher a bunch of writings that every other scientist or academic was wrong about. When he does this he succesfully creates a Stargate, a bridge between our world and another.
Our other hero is Sergeant Kurt Russell. Russell is sitting around trying to take two and not call his doctor in the morning, just generally being sad about guns because his son accidentally shot himself. Like father like son I guess. Sorry if that sounds cruel, it's just so desperately reaching for pathos and drama that it kind of enters into the realm of parody parody. I may have been raised by gun nuts, but I am very pro depicting guns as dangerous. Stargate is about as subtle as a pie in the face, or a bullet in the face. Ok, I'm done. Anyway, the military has one more mission for Kurt and he decides for some reason that means that guns are good again for killing bad guys, except for later when he decides that guns are bad again.
So Disney's Atlantis and Guile from Street Fighter enter the Stargate and discover a world where illiterate humans are kept in subjugation by a ruling class of aliens who use them to mine precious minerals and demand to be worshipped as Gods. The leader of these aliens is an immortal alien being who has possessed the body of a teen boy pop sensation and goes by the name of Ra.
James Spader is gifted a wife by the locals because it's so quirky that women are property, i guess, but it's okay because they happen to be in love, and with her help he is able to learn the truth behind this worlds condition. Ra had built the Stargate to travel between worlds and was worshipped in Ancient Egypt, however the people got wise to his BS and he had to escape. He took many humans hostage and crossed the stargate and then banned reading and writing as an attempt to quell any kind of uprising, and it's worked for a long time.
Ra is pissed at the earth boys though because he knows a nuclear weapon when he sees one. Turns out Kurt Russell brought a big ol bomb with him across the stargate as a contingency plan for any aggro aliens they may have found. Hey, they found them so I guess it wasn't too bad of an idea. Ra punishes his worshippers by having them mercilessly bombed and Spader and Russell team up with the locals to revolt. They eventually gain the upper hand and Ra attempts to flee with his Pyramid space ship but our heroes teleport the nuke onto his ship and save the day. Thus launching several Sci-Fi television series that I have never watched.
The Benediction
Best Scene: Ra Footage
The Throne Room Scene where we are first introduced to Ra and his godlike warriors is pretty excellent. It's so menacing how he surrounds himself with a force field of children, and the combination of futuristic technology with an ancient Egyptian aesthetic that this film sells itself on is on it's ultimate display in this scene. I really like the villains in this movie and I savor whenever they get to be shown off.
Best effect: Mastadge Ride
The CG on Stargate is better than in Species which sought to be it's competitor a year later, but it is still dated. It's utilized in cool enough ways and sparingly enough that even though it looks cartoony at moments it is very easy to forgive. Being Easy to forgive however, would be a pretty lackluster qualification for best effect and I'm going to have to turn this honor to the practical creature effects for the Mastadge. When we are first introduced to our alien world one the first things we see is the fuzzy maw of one of these creatures, before it takes James Spader for a very harrowing trip across the desert. These alien beasts of burden do sometimes reveal that they are mounted upon horses, but in close ups they just look so good. I love them and I want one.
Worst Scene: It's just sad OK!
Kurt Russell becomes very popular with the young men from the village of Ra's worshippers. They come to see him as some kind of hero and seek to emulate him. However, these people are very peaceful and not in any way battle hardened. A group of the young men stand up to the leaders and seek to aid the Earthlings in their revolution. They are brave but in many ways out classed by Ra's elite guards. Through the sheer force of numbers they do succeed in casting off the shackles of their oppressors but not before one of the young men we've come to care about is tragically blasted all to shit in slow mo. That scene made me cry a ton when I was a kid, and I dreaded waiting for it as an adult. It is worth noting that if you aren't 5 years old a lot of the drama in Stargate is pretty hamfisted and corny. It's a pretty excellent action movie, and a pretty goofy drama.
Coolest looking Villain: Animals as Leaders
I used to think that Ra was really stupid looking, but I was a kid and was biased towards cool warriors with animal heads, but I really have a much better appreciation for the effects and costume design of all of the godly villain crew than I used to. That said, The Anubis guy in particular still holds up. It's the dope Jackal head, the teal of the armor. It's what I picture when I picture Stargate. The Horus guys are also worth a mention with their awesome hawk jets. I couldn't pick a "Best" villain, so I went with the Coolest Looking.
Worst Aspect: Lacking Character
When I have fond thoughts of Stargate, they almost never revolve around the characters, or if they do it's in a juvenile manner. Who had cool armor, who had cool weapons, or who did the coolest thing? I have a hard time caring about these meandering people. They are inconsistent. They have no flaws that they work on or grow from. They are special because the script insists that it's so, and I don't really care if they succeed or fail at any point in the film. It's a shame because we have a good set up, and good lore. If at any point any body acted like a real person I think Stargate would be better remembered as a film than as the weird older sibling of a long running television series.
Summary
I'd like to say that Stargate succeeds at everything it's trying to do, but it doesn't. Stargate fails in the tragedy and pathos it attempts to create within it's characters; but it does succeed in almost every other way. Stargate is an engaging and exciting action movie. Stargate delivers on it's science fiction concept, and provides some fun fantasy lore to round out it's world building. Stargate is also a great looking (at most times) special effects spectacle. For all of those reasons, It is not a great film, but it is pretty darn good film.
