Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) Movie Review by: Will Whalen
Kingsman: The Golden Circle has finally arrived looking stylish and gentlemanly. This was one of my most highly anticipated films of the year and I have been looking forward to this since I walked out of the theater after seeing the first film. The first was one of my favorite films of 2014 and is one of my favorite action/spy films of all time. Although, Kingsman: The Golden Circle does have its flaws, it’s still a blast and I’m quite surprised by the poor reviews.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle is about when the Kingsman's headquarters is destroyed and the world is held hostage by a new villain on the rise, the Kingsman must team up with the Statesman to defeat the enemy.
Matthew Vaughn has been one of my favorite directors for quite some time now. Everything he touches is absolutely brilliant and an all out blast. The way he makes his films with his stylized direction, is enough to get me into the theater excited as ever. The way he directs action scenes and the direction in Kingsman: The Secret Service, melts my face off, and with The Golden Circle, the stylized action is definitely here the second time around. What I love about Vaughn’s big action scenes in his films is that he almost always has the perfect song to fit the glorious scenes. He knows exactly how to get you on the edge of your seat and knows how to make you jump with excitement at the same time, while jamming along the way. Another thing I love about the world of the Kingsman is how inventive the weapons and their gadgets are. Like the classic spy films, they have some of the coolest and outrageously awesome gadgets that you could ever even imagine.
Before I saw this, I read somewhere that the original cut for this was 3 hours and 40 minutes long. But after Fox asked Vaughn if they should make it two parts, Vaughn immediately cut it down to the length it is now. That also had me a bit worried before seeing it because I thought that it would’ve felt very edited down, but I couldn’t even tell. Although, a lot of the characters are very underutilized even at a 2 and a half hour runtime. That makes me wonder about the original cut for this and if it would’ve shown more of these characters, which brings me to my next topic, and that’s the characters.
Taron Egerton as Eggsy is perfect and I just love this character. If the entire film was just revolved around him and his life apart from the Kingsman, I’d still be very entertained. Eggsy is hilarious and such a likeable character and you genuinely care for him when he’s in danger and even when he’s having his own troubles at home. The other characters are great as well though. Mark Strong as Merlin is awesome. He’s a character that every film like this needs. As far as our new characters go, although they are awesome, most feel very underutilized, especially Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum and Halle Berry. I would’ve loved to see more of them, especially Channing Tatum, because every time he’s on screen, he has the spotlight. I can’t be too entirely disappointed though because I feel like Vaughn tried to build this world up more than anything and we’ll most likely see more of these characters in the future. Now, let’s talk about the villain of this movie. Julianne Moore as Poppy was a fun villain that brings laughs. Is she better than Samuel L. Jackson as Valentine though? Absolutely not. She’s not a bad villain at all, but she’s in one location the entire film. She has a cool villain hideout or whatever and it’s a fun set piece, but she’s there the entire film. She’s a fun villain and I enjoyed seeing her every time she’s on screen, but she’s just a dull antagonist unfortunately. Some of her best parts are due to her henchmen or robot dogs. There’s just not that much to her character, but nonetheless, she does bring a lot of fun to this film. There’s also a great celebrity cameo that was damn brilliant.
As far as other problems go, like I said, some of the characters are a tad underutilized. At times, the pacing is all over the place. When a movie that was 3 hours and 40 minutes was brought down to 2 and a half hours, I’m surprised it flowed as well as it did. There’s also a certain choice with one of the characters that I thought was just a bit unnecessary. It’s introduced but then it’s pushed to the side very quickly. Another character decision they made, there’s a certain reason that a certain character does something and to me, was kind of lazy and a tad dumb. I can’t elaborate on the characters because it would kind of be a spoiler. Other than that, the other problems just had to do with pacing.
Nonetheless, I had a blast with this film. I feel like the reviews have been a bit harsh or have been taking it a bit too serious. It’s a fun, awesome, highly entertaining film that had me jumping in my seat and laughing throughout. It’s not without flaws, but if you loved the first Kingsman then you’ll at least like this and have a blast. I’m already waiting for another sequel. I could watch these films forever and I honestly wish they would release the near 4 hour cut out on blu ray, but we will probably never see that cut unfortunately. Remember, manners maketh the man.
I’m going to give Kingsman: The Golden Circle...
3.5 out of 5 stars.
