THERE WILL COME SOFT RAINS by Ray Bradbury (1950) (link) - tw: death
Eight-one, tick-tock, eight-one o'clock, off to school, off to work, run, run, eight-one! But no doors slammed, no carpets took the soft tread of rubber heels. It was raining outside. The weather box on the front door sang quietly: "Rain, rain, go away; umbrellas, raincoats for today. .." And the rain tapped on the empty house, echoing.
THE ONES WHO WALK AWAY FROM OMELAS by Ursula K Le Guin (1973) (link) - tw: child abuse
Do you believe? Do you accept the festival, the city, the joy? No? Then let me describe one more thing. In the basement under one of the beautiful public buildings of Omelas, there is a room. It has one locked door, and no window. ... In the room a child is sitting.

it's not often that any piece of literature can impact me so much that it goes on to define how I see the world and how I want to live but I just need to get it out there that Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, and Julian Gough's works have changed my life
I'm working through reading the rest of Ray Bradbury's works that I've found in my university's library, but I need you all to know that when I spotted The Fog Horn in our archive, I almost cried and missed my shuttle home. There Will Come Soft Rains has permanently instilled in my mind visions of the quiet world without us. Kaleidoscope broke my heart and mended it again when all the men fell like stars and wondered if that was how all dying people felt.
I know Harlan Ellison for one thing and it's I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, and it forced my brain open so it could accept it in its entirety. AM's malice and hatred is engraved into my mind as his own is engraved into miles of his own wires.
then there's Julian fuckin Gough and the Minecraft End Poem and like - I can be funny about this but I have genuinely never felt more loved than when I was reading through that thing for the first time. There is worth in dreaming and being alive.
anyway they're the reasons I really want to take short story-writing seriously thanks for sitting through this short post of short, unhinged praise

‼️DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT HATING ON THE 1984 ANIMATED SHORT!! I love that big clunky robot and its deep voice, UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE. I am that guy's biggest apologist!! If it weren't for that adaptation, I'd still have no idea how tf I can make fanart of that story because I wouldn't have thought that you could just. Give the house a main robot body that hangs out on the ceiling Glados style and get silly with it!!
I just thought it'd be funny to compare my more whimsical version with a darker take. Ok rant over‼️
So yeah, don't mind me, just giving everyone whiplash by making a dang smart house from one of the saddest sci-fi short stories into a silly little guy.
Mr Ray Bradbury, I am kinda glad you're already dead, because it means you can't beat me to death for completely ignoring the whole point of your story :-]
Yeah uhh since you're already here, take these stills

There Will Come Soft Rains - Sara Teasdale - USA
(War Time)
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white,
Robins will wear their feathery fire Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn, Would scarcely know that we were gone.

There Will Come Soft Rains - In Real Time
On August 4, 2026, this blog will post this short story by Ray Bradbury in real time, as it is happening in the story.
Q: Why? A: Inspired by the success of things like Dracula Daily, I wanted to do my own version of the epistolary story posting. In my own way.
Q: How will the story be posted? A: The story will be posted with one new post every time a new event happens in the story. If a time for an event can be determined by the text, it will be posted at that time.
Q: What time zone will be used? A: Central Standard Time will be used. If you live on the East coast of the USA, add two hours. If you live on the West coast, subtract two hours.
Q: What happens if the owner of the blog is unable to post on August 4, 2026? A: This blog is on a queue. This means that it will post whether I'm dead or alive. I felt it was fitting with the theme of the story.
Q: Are you going to post anything else? A: Maybe.

Not a poem I created but one that needs recognition
There Will Come Soft Rains
Sara Teasdale 1884-1933
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallowing circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,
Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

How mainstream sci-fi authors name their short stories:
One sad and dreadful day they finally came down to Earth
unique name
it's easy to find (there simply isn't another short story with the same name)
you can tell this is a sci-fi right away
it pretty well summarizes the story
How mainstream sci-fi authors name their novels:
The Ship
the most common name you can think of
it is NOT that easy to find that one book you are looking for (there are literally like five other books with the same name from the same year and by the same author)
idk is this a sail tale? pirate story? a fanfic?
first few pages are located in a spaceship, but then they land on a planet and the ship is never going to be brought back ever again

I deeply love this poem. it really inspired this idea of coming to term and finding peace with the disappearance of humanity that Ophelia and her journey into the Forest that eats the world is about

...wow book... even your Introduction is now so hopelessly dated! It wasn't the "internets", faxes or Walkman.... but Circuit City t'was the final nail
