(GL/Yuri) Shoujo Heroine... and Friends Chapter 6
Tumblr media
Remember Atsuji, the student body president? We get to know him more in this chapter. Also, we get to watch Gitan being a dick.  Please comment your thoughts and like this chapter if you, well, like it.
Rated: T
Fandom: Original story
Relationship type: F/F with some F/M
Description:
Sahana is friendly, innocent and optimistic, making her the perfect shoujo anime heroine… except she’s not the main character of this story.
When school prince Toyomi asks her out, she starts hanging out with him and leaves her friends behind. Prim and proper Masami and tomboyish slob Kunie don’t seem to have much in common outside of their friendship with Sahana, but they try to make the best out of a lonely situation.
So why is the god of love and marriage watching them, red string of fate at the ready? CONTENT WARNING: Some homophobic language and bullying.
Chapter 6: Is he really right for her?
You know when you’re out on a date and you happen to run into someone you know? Awkward, right? Luckily for Toyomi and Sahana, the person who spotted them stayed far away.
Atsuji’s table in the food court was several tables away from Toyomi and Sahana but their bright, attention-garnering Main Character Hair™ stood out amongst the black and brown hair in the background. He stared at them. Well, it was more like a glare.
He watched them laugh together and wondered what was so special about Toyomi, the boy who was always late to council meetings, frequently spoke in a sickly sweet voice seemingly dripping with condescension and was currently resting his hand atop his limp wrist as he leaned forward during his conversation with Sahana. Not that Atsuji cared. If Sahana wanted to be a discount lesbian, fine by him.
Part of his heart cracked upon thinking that. He had dared to sully Sahana’s good name. But he definitely didn’t care.
If Sahana was to date Atsuji, you know, just hypothetically, he would surely be a better match. He was punctual, hardworking, romantic and humble. But did he care? Of course not.
Wooh, reading people’s minds takes a lot out of you. I’m slowly getting better at it, though. Give me a moment.
Okay, the story continues.
Atsuji found himself slamming his hands against the table as he pushed himself up. When he saw a few pairs of eyes on him, he put his hands in his pockets and hightailed out of there.
Once home he took out his laptop and continued writing a story on his bed. A big grin came onto his face when he laughed at a joke he wrote. He regularly checked his notes for plot points he should include. He stopped at the point where a teenage boy confesses to a girl, deciding to leave it until a day he could fully focus on writing the girl’s reaction.
He had a general idea of how he wanted the character to respond, but his inexperience barred him from imagining the details. That is, until he started thinking about Sahana and wondering how she reacted to Toyomi’s confession. If he was the one who confessed, of course. Knowing his disposition, it could have easily been the other way around.
But imagine Atsuji did, and over time Toyomi’s delicate features were replaced by Atsuji’s until he was the one confessing to Sahana.
Once he got to the point of kissing Sahana, he pushed the laptop in front of him and crawled backwards until his head whacked against the headboard. The pain was numbed by a confusing mix of fear and anger.
In the middle of the confusion was one certainty. Toyomi needed to feel as miserable as possible.
This mandatory misery was enforced, or at least attempted to be enforced, by Atsuji, who dumped a landfill’s worth of mostly unimportant work on him. He did this under the guise of ‘student council’ duties.
First he made the poor boy clean the council room. Naturally, he inspected every inch of that room and barked at him to reclean any part that was not spotless.
Another command of his was that Toyomi compile a list of every club and the number of toilet breaks they offered. Atsuji pretended that this was necessary to ensure the efficiency of club activities. Toyomi’s repetition of this excuse to club leaders did not prevent them from giving him dirty looks.
Towards the end of the week, the student council president... By me, I dare not speak of it, for it is much too cruel and disturbing. Wait, you really want to know?
Atsuji gave Toyomi several pieces of red string, which he had confiscated from a club planning to use them on Valentine’s Day, and ordered him to cut them into smaller strings.
The horror of it all! My beautiful invention treated as a weed ruining a lush garden!
This task did not work as Atsuji had planned. Toyomi didn’t come to the realisation that his relationship with Sahana was doomed to end, nor did he receive the message that love was pointless and that he should lead the single life.
What he did notice was humanity’s capacity for cruelty. No, not from Atsuji’s actions, but Gitan’s. After catching wind of Toyomi’s quest for toilet break information, he absolutely had to make a comment while Toyomi was walking from one club room to another.
‘Do gay guys even cruise these days? Honestly, you must be getting desperate if you’re using school toilets.’
Toyomi gave him a bewildered look. What did toilets have to do with gay people? Gitan grabbed him by the strands of his hair and pulled them up, mimicking the cutting of hair with his fingers.
‘Hey, maybe if you cut your hair, you can be better at sneaking into men’s stalls. Or do you like being an attention whore, faggot?’
Toyomi’s voice was strained as pain circled around his hair’s follicles. ‘H-how am I a-’
Gitan stretched his arms until they were open, still holding onto Toyomi’s hair. ‘Come on, we all know the truth.’ His voice and gestures were loud and dramatic enough to rival Toyomi’s way of moving. ‘Your hair and visage are terribly reminiscent of a BL character.’
‘BL? How do I look like one of those characters?’
‘Do you have a pile of dust for a brain?’
Toyomi shook his head and immediately yelped from the pain that action added to his head. Gitan snickered at him.
‘What’s the matter, faggot? And try not to sound too condescending when you answer. I know that’s hard for you.’
Before Toyomi could answer, a certain mint-haired girl shouted at Gitan, the sun creating a glow around her through the window behind her.
‘Let go of him before I bring a teacher here!’
Gitan didn’t even have a chance to let Toyomi go because Fumie snatched him from him. All he could really do was smirk and make another remark.
‘I see you need a girl to fight your battles for you. Isn’t that right, faggot?’
Fumie checked Toyomi’s face for any injuries. ‘You’re an abomination, Gitan.’
‘Oh, get off your high horse, you third rate nun!’
The yelling gathered a dozen students to the scene. Rumours dripped from the tongues of students in deafening whispers.
‘Are you really okay with him prancing around like he does?’ Gitan continued.
‘I never said I approved of his behaviour,’ Fumie answered. ‘That isn’t a good excuse to bully someone, though!’
Toyomi crashed into their conversation. ‘What behaviour? Why does everyone think I’m… and what’s wrong with gay people?’
Gitan crossed his arms and scoffed with pride. ‘Of course you’d defend gay guys.’
Toyomi didn’t know how to respond to this accusation, so he shut his mouth.
Whenever Sahana wasn’t around, he could hear people calling her a fake girlfriend in a failed whisper. Every word pinched his heart inch by inch until the entire thing throbbed in pain far worse than what he felt after Gitan’s insults.

masterpost on why mod norway hates den//nor a lot without mentioning kin stuff or specific ships that are better
disclaimer: this post isn’t to start an argument, the only reason I’m making it is to organize my thoughts about den//nor because @ adhd wyd.
This is okay to reblog, but I will ignore any and all reblogs adding on things about how I’m wrong. This is based off a mix of opinion, canon and scientific evidence about attraction, and I really, really, don’t want to argue about den//nor, especially with people who ship it. So really, for the sake of my mental health and your time, don’t bother arguing with my stubborn ass. I’m not going to change my stance on this and there’s nothing you can say to change that.
contents: yaoi / it’d be unhealthy (for both of them) / the actual shippers / dynamic
yaoi.
I’m not saying I dislike gay ships, no. I live for gay ships, I’m a gay male, I love mlm ships. Big comfort material. I dislike yaoi, gay ships are fine and dandy. Yaoi is gross.
Yaoi (”Also called BL (Boy’s Love) and Shounen Ai, yaoi is a genre of manga that fetishizes m/m relationships and relies on homophobic stereotypes for plot and character devices.”), and fujioshis.
“In most yaoi mangas, there is one agressive masculine man who preys upon an usually much younger, submissive feminine man. It strengthens the homophobic myth of gay men being predators and pedophiles.”
Doesn’t that sound a lot how the fandom portrays Denmark and Norway? Denmark is canonically the same height as Norway (Well, Norway is like an inch shorter at most), and the two have about the same body shape. Yet what do y’all fujioshis do? Draw Norway as some femme boy that’s like a foot shorter than Denmark.
“It also relies on heteronormative stereotypes, where there are always strict uke/seme roles in bed, as well as a feminine caring and a masculine powerful dynamic in the relationship outside of the bed.  “
Again, what do y’all do? Make Norway super femme and oh so much smarter than Denmark, making Denmark the unhealthily powerful one -- Bringing me to my next point;
it’d be unhealthy (for both of them).
Tumblr media
“They have known each other since childhood, but while Denmark considers the two of them to be like best friends and believes that Norway thinks the same way he does, he is unaware of Norway's blunt teasing.[7] Norway frequently refers to him as anko[12], a term Himaruya has described as having a nuance like older brother or oniichan, the familiar form of big brother, and having a classmate-like feeling.[13]”
“Main article: Norway
Norway is a childhood friend of Denmark's, who he feels rather close to and strongly about, believing that Norway sees him the same way as a "best friend." “
(source: Norways wiki & Denmarks wiki)
Since I’m not sure how to word it; lets take my parents for example; they’d been dating since they were 15 (fifteen) until they were like 23-24. My mom used to go over to his house every. single. day. because she felt more at home there than at her own home. They never argued, they were like a perfect relationship almost. Why they broke up? My mom, and I quote, “saw him more like a brother than a lover.” Which is a completely justified reason to break up! My parents have the same relationship as siblings. Now, if my parents felt like siblings after 8 years of growing up together; imagine the bond that Denmark and Norway have.
They grew up together for thousands of years! Meaning they’d be much, much closer than my parents were. So maybe they could’ve dated at some point in their history, but I can see them doing the same thing my parents did; break up because they felt like siblings/being best friends would be better. Plus, you don’t call your lover “brother”, even if you’re not actually related or don’t mean it as sibling-way especially if you have other, blood-related, siblings.
Why would a relationship be unhealthy for the both of them?
Because if they feel like brothers, then you get the same unhealthy benefits of actual incest from the Westermarck effect, “a hypothetical psychological effect through which people who live in close domestic proximity during the first few years of their lives become desensitized to sexual attraction.” Which, guess what, Denmark and Norway have known each other since childhood,
Fujioshis turning the shp into yaoi + the westermarck effect; what do we have?
If you put the two into a relationship you’re implying that one of them is unconsciously forcing themselves onto the other. Or just, y’know, people straight up writing something like Danish Slaughter House - a fanfiction where Denmark straight up rapes and kills all the Nordics.
And speaking of Danish Slaughter House, let’s move on to the next point;
the actual shippers.
I don’t even know where to start with this one. I guess I’ll start with shamchat, a great site, I spend a lot of time there - as one of my biggest hobbies in the past few years is roleplaying. I have almost 2 years of experience with writing Norway. The thing is, when I come across Denmarks on the site it almost always, if theyre a Dennor shipper, starts off as something like:
Best friends hanging out -> Denmark asks Norway to do something with him -> Norway is busy -> Denmark gets sad -> Norway tries to make him feel better -> Denmark confesses feelings.
what? and then Norway will tell Denmark that he sees him as a brother or just doesn’t feel the same, and then there’s a long range of reactions I’ve gotten from Denmarks with this, some of the worst including being harassed ooc for not shipping it, being guilted ooc for not shipping it (@ my RSD, someone telling me that they’re crying because I don’t ship something just. x20 as bad as neurotypicals), Denmark trying to force himself onto Norway sexually, and there was actually one where they had Denmark threaten to kill whoever Norway had feelings for.
For fucks sake! Once I was on as FtM!Caught Binding!Norway because I was feeling incredibly dysphoric, and I had a Denmark threaten to out Norway to the other Nordics, while Norway was begging him not to, and when he finally agreed not to  - which took actually making Norway (and me for that matter, since I have really big emotional ties with Norway) cry - he immediately jumps to a confession, which Norway sorta tells him off because what makes anyone think after threatening to out someone as trans they’re gonna accept a uwu love confession uwu uwu, which in turn upset Denmark and the entire rp turns to them - Norway trying to make him feel better, telling him that he’s his brother and always will be, etc. Making the biggest effort to make him feel better, but no instead he runs away to his bedroom, locks himself in his closet and tried to stab himself to death.
Most of these were done while I was on mobile, so unfortunately I don’t have saves to them.
Am I upset that you people portray Denmark horribly? Of course. My point isn’t the portrayals of Denmark here, though. Because the canon portrayal of Denmark is actually pretty fit for Norway, not going to lie, but my point is about how the shippers pull bullshit like this when someone doesn’t like their ship, which again ties into the homophobia of yaoi.
“Many mangas in this genre also have a plot centered around rape (the seme/top rapes the uke/bottom, then the uke realizes he actually loves the seme and allows the relationship to continue), abuse (physical, where the seme will hurt the uke, or emotional, where either part will threaten things as far as suicide if the other part dares to leave them), pedophilia (shota is a subgenre of yaoi in which boys as young as 5-6 will have sexual relationships with middle aged men). “
Most of these I’ve actually had to deal with personally aside from the pedophilia/shota bit, while I’ve never actually done an rp with someone as Shota!Denmark (I skip anyone who thinks shota is ok), I’ve seen them around, along with Shota!Norways.
I’m not going to start with the amount of Denmark’s on shamchat idealizing Norway in every way, shape and form.
dynamic.
Admittedly, Denmark is an almost ideal guy for Norway personality-wise, with how socially inept Norway is (Which Denmark can still be there for him if they’re friends), but for Denmark, Norway isn’t super suitable. The idea that Denmark needs someone to keep him in check is a little, how do I say it, wrong. Denmark is over 2000 years old, he’s smart enough to keep himself in check, while it would be nice for him to have someone to be there to tell him “You’re being too loud” and to give him a little help here and there, best friends can do that, can they not? As for a romantic partner, Denmark would probably be better matched with someone who doesn’t have trouble complimenting people or doing things solely to please him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Denmark has his self image as a priority, and as shown by the above strips I’ve given, Norway isn’t the best to give him that. Norway is better at subtly doing things for people he cares for, not outright stating and cheering for him - which I did try to find the part of a strip where Denmark was imagining Norway and Iceland cheering for him (Or something like that), I couldn’t find it, but that one in specific emphasizes that a romantic relationship between Denmark and Norway wouldn’t quite work the same way their brothery relationship works.
Everyone teases and gets into arguments with their siblings, (Which Norway does tease & occasionally insult Denmark) and you always know that everything your sibling says to insult you isn’t serious, but even though Denmark “blatantly ignores offensive and aggressive social tones ”, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t pick up on them and he holds himself up too high for it to be a healthy relationship romantically if for either of them if Norway isn’t going to be positive, Norway is kinda negative and Denmark contrasts that greatly, but if Norway can’t give Denmark flattery and self esteem boosts straightforwardly, then Denmark won’t be happy in the relationship, which makes him less positive, making him less ideal for Norway. Whereas if they just stay as brothers, it’s easier for Denmark to just brush off any teasing or criticism Norway might have.
As for romantic relationships for Norway, I did say earlier that Norway needs someone who’s positive, good at social interaction, cheerful, friendly, etc. He also needs someone who easily picks up on the little things he does and isn’t extremely high-maintenance when it comes to needing flattery. Someone that Norway doesn’t have to be straightforward with. While we’re at it, I’ll also mention why someone who isn’t these things wouldn’t work, Norway needs someone positive and good at social interaction because he’s not these things, (He’s said it himself, he is painfully shy around strangers as he resolved to leave upon seeing them; yes I’m ignoring that he did all that speaking right after he said that, this is because I’m going off the it was only there for comedic purposes and doesn’t mean anything), and he needs someone cheery/friendly to contrast himself (I’m not saying he isn't friendly! He is quite that, but isn’t great at expressing it.), since a relationship between two characters who are really apathetic about a lot of things would just end in them thinking theyre apathetic abt each other. Picking up on little things + not needing to be straightforward with is kinda self explanatory after the stuff about Denmark.
Anyways, back on track. Kinda? Conclusion.
I do like the “quiet one & loud one”/”opposites attract”/similar tropes a lot, but when it comes to Denmark and Norway it doesn’t quite work out as well as others might. Especially with fandom misportrayals, it kinda ruins the pairing for me.

FEATURE: Six New Winter Anime Impressions!
What are the odds? Last year I had to make sure not to watch too much anime so I had time to do work; this year, I have to make sure I watch new anime as it comes out so it's easier to report on for Crunchyroll. That means I've found myself steaming through the first episodes of a whole bunch of shows over the past few days. It's weird to actually be confronting a lot of these after writing about them hypothetically for the last handful of months and knowing about their production background. How some of them have turned out is interesting -- not always the best, but definitely interesting. So here's a fast run-down of a few of the newest offerings, based (for better or for worse) solely on their first episodes. (As an aside, I interact with very little manga/light novel content -- so I can't comment on source material for any of these.) Click on the titles to watch them streaming on Crunchyroll!
elDLIVE Short: Katekyo Hitman Reborn! in space. Demographic: Shonen action Animation: Nice so far Plot: Can probably be protracted to 700+ episodes Lewdness: Low Based on: Manga elDLIVE is based on another manga by the creator of Reborn!, hence the similarity in style and storytelling. A schoolboy named Chuuta talks to a voice in his head, which makes him a laughingstock; this voice turns out to be an alien critter living inside him, which gives him the ability to use superhuman powers. These powers lead to him joining elDLIVE, the solar system's police force. So far, it's a very shiny-animation shonen series. There are some neat alien designs (I had a chuckle at the moon man alien named Méliès) and some cool effects. But there's nothing so far that's really fired it above and beyond all other shonen. Which isn't a criticism so much as it is to say... if you like shonen, this is fun and you should watch it. It looks like the type of show that'll be here for a while.
Gabriel DropOut Short: Angelic try-hard comes to Earth, discovers MMOs, and becomes nerd trash. Demographic: Teen/adult Animation: Nice Plot: School comedy Lewdness: About what you'd expect Based on: Manga At first glance, Gabriel DropOut looks like it's going to be in the vein of Lucky*Star, starring a smol irritable nerd and her classmates. For the most part it's entertaining -- the other three main girls are a kindly demon who uses her temptation abilities to convince Gab to actually go to school, the incompetent daughter of Satan, and another angel whose latent masochism takes no time to reveal itself. It definitely has sequences and jokes I enjoyed, but then it disappears into panty jokes. At this point I think it's a matter of waiting and seeing whether the funny outranks the fanservice or vice-versa. But there's plenty I find funny, and I can't just out-of-hand reject a show that has an angel trying to send a computer to Hell for Windows updates.
      Interviews with Monster Girls
Short: Monster High does a student exchange with Japan.
Demographic: Teen/young adult
Animation: Fairly mainstream
Plot: Potentially school comedy with lurking metaplot
Lewdness: Shockingly low
Based on: Manga
A biology teacher intrigued by the supernatural teaches at a high school with three supernatural students and a succubus teacher. Sounds like a lead-in to a harem anime, right? It's... really not.
Considering the plot involves a biology teacher getting to know a vampire, a succubus, a dullahan, and a yuki-onna, you probably wouldn't expect it to be a show where one of the major themes is using shared suffering to break through social barriers.
There is fanservice, but it's extremely low and played off as 'you're a teenager with limited experience so you probably didn't know how that was going to come across.' Largely it's about a society where demi-humans (or 'demis,' as they prefer to be called) -- the source of our fairy tales and folktales -- have gotten equal rights and government assistance so they can function day-to-day, but still struggle to fit in in human society. (The succubus, for example, avoids human contact and deliberately dresses frumpy because she dislikes her nature and what it does to humans.)
Being a demi isn't genetic -- two of the main characters are twins, one human and one vampire. While it's not said in so many words, it's treated more as a condition that's widely misunderstood, with our protagonist giving the school demis a haven to teach him more about themselves. Whether it's intentionally a metaphor for disability or not, it can certainly be read that way -- and as someone with some wildly misunderstood conditions, I found myself tearing up a bit at the scene where the vampire broke the ice with the dullahan by being open about her day-to-day difficulties.
    Piacevole ~My Italian Cooking~
Short: Small adorable people make delicious food
Demographic: Food lovers
Animation: Unique and pretty
Plot: Low
Lewdness: Essentially nonexistent
Based on: Manga (read here)
In the list of minisode-lengh shows is Piacevole, consisting of four-minute-long shorts about a girl who takes a part-time job at an Italian restaurant. The head chef is a schoolboy who proves his worth despite his age, and the episode ends with a quick run-down of the featured dish. This is light, fluffy, and completely innocuous (beyond momentary commentary on that one ridiculously stacked character). And the art itself is very sweet to look at.
    Seiren
Short: Dating sim adaptation with no dating isim
Demographic: Young adult
Animation: Rather nice
Plot: Anthology
Lewdness: Middling
Based on: Nothing (original concept)
So Seiren has been getting pretty much the most hype of any winter anime whose progress I've been following. From a business standpoint, I have to say their social media roll-out was grade A. The way they spaced their character profiles, cast announcements, and merchandise was... I mean seriously, it probably sounds weird to say, but the flawless marketing cadence was what initially intrigued me.
Made by the creators of Amagami SS, it's an anthology-type show with your typical awkward teenage boy in the midst of a variety of young women, with each girl getting a short story in the form of a handful of episodes detailing how she influences our hero's final year of high school.
Hikari Tsuneki is our first girl up, and she is of a Type: doesn't care what anyone thinks, slightly more open about things like dirty manga and invading personal space, you know. The first time we see her with our protag, she's sitting on his desk and he just stares... stares... at where she'd been sitting once she gets up.
Unsurprisingly, it really does feel like a dating sim adaptation, but it's all-new material. It's pretty all right so far, with the stand-outs (to me) being the animation quality and the opening and ending themes. I'm willing to keep watching for a while.
Spiritpact Short: BL ghosts Demographic: Fujoshi Animation: Fluctuates, but generally nice Plot: Fast moving with lots of exposition Lewdness: Surprisingly low Spiritpact is a Chinese-produced anime based on a popular BL webcomic about a stoic ghost hunter who forms a magical bond with a recently deceased exorcist woobie. There's very little by way of blood and gore, plenty of supernatural violence, and what looks to be a quickly unspooling plot. Honestly, I'm not a huge seeker of the BL, but I do enjoy this. My only complaint is the sheer amount of exposition and the awkwardness with which it's delivered. This could be a product of trying to get the plot underway quickly, or it could have happened on the Japanese dubbing end. I'm not sure. But there's a lot of telling rather than showing going on. That aside, the voice acting was great, the characters (while they were the expected BL combo of serious handsome and goof-ass cutie) are entertaining, and the animation's pretty nice. I'm definitely going to watch at least a few more episodes of this to learn more about the world it takes place in. (Oh also, their excuse for the lead looking cute and young is that when you die your ghost looks like you during your happiest moment, and his happiest moment was in middle school. I've heard worse.)
Rather unexpectedly, Interviews with Monster Girls ended up being my favourite of this first crop of winter simulcasts I tried. The others all had their positive points, but there was something very sweet about this one -- even though the entire set-up makes it seem like it's going to be a typical moe show. I mean, it still has the potential to go that way, but I'm hoping we'll continue to see what was in the first episode.
So what else is running this winter that deserves my attention? I'd love to hear your recommendations! And if I can fit them on my slate, I'll give them a go!
