I hate “we’re fucked.”

I mean, I don’t want to shame anyone who has said it, thought it, or posted it. I have too. But as a philosophy, as a statement of belief, I hate it. Because it means you’ve given up. We are absolutely NOT fucked. Things are so bad. This country has taken a turn that I could never have predicted. It is absolutely fascist, nativist, and extremist. It’s every bit as scary as it seems. But we are not fucked. I read a long-form article on the Russia hacks in the New Yorker not long ago. However much you think that influenced the outcome, it was an instructive piece of journalism. There is very little indication that there was a specific political agenda that was being wished for. The goal was simple: Sow chaos and undermine the faith of Westerners in their own institutions. This is really important to think about right now. I have a high regard for Mueller and I think his investigation will have some influence. But don’t wait on him to save us. He can’t. And don’t wait on impeachment. I would support it fervently, but it is nothing to bank on. And especially don't assume Trump can't win again. He absolutely can. Our best bet - better, even, than all of our protests and actions - is actually voting. It’s so square. It’s so old-fashioned. Many of us involved with the hard-left or anarchist scene have been trained to disregard it. Fucking don’t. NOT NOW, guys. It is the best tool at our disposal. Yeah, you can say that they will sabotage it, reject it, whatever. “Sufficient to the day is the evil thereof.” In other words, don’t create troubles before they exist. Anything seems possible to me right now, but it remains the case - despite hacked voting machines and gerrymandering - that there is no known mechanism by which our government can deny massive voter turnout. Take back the House in November. Then take back the Presidency in 2020. The worst thing we could do is pretend that these are givens. I never, ever, ever thought that this piece of shit could sit in the Oval Office. I was so humbled by my error. Therefore I assume he could take it again - I know he could - unless we accept the threat as real. When we say, “We’re fucked,” we roll over. We defeat ourselves. We do their job for them. Don’t do that. We are NOT fucked. We are in a fight. It sucks. It’s hard. People are suffering. The earth is suffering. It will get worse. You know, since everyone loves the Nazi comparisons, there were people during the HEYDAY of the Third Reich who NEVER said, “We’re fucked.” They said, “We’re in a fight.” And you know what’s interesting? Nazi Germany went from the worst regime in the world to a liberal democracy within a lifetime. Look at Japan. Take the historical view. Stop pretending that the worst of what’s happening now is what is going to always happen. This is what is happening RIGHT NOW. That’s all you know. If you think it’s going to be this way forever, read a book. Countries slide into fascism for long periods. It happens. Countries also have short-term extremist right-wing governments. Happens in Europe all the time. They get voted out. The threat remains. The threat of fascism will remain in America in a way it never has before. It’s a real movement. But we’re not fucked. Not even close. We can get off the ropes in the mid-terms and knock them out in 2020. But only if we stop saying that we’re fucked, and start seeing this as a fight. I’m no Pollyanna. Things are so unutterably bad that I walk around in a constant state of nausea and horror. But you have to take the historical view, and you can’t lie down and say we’re doomed, or else they have beaten you. Again, I don’t want to shame anyone who says, “We’re fucked” as an emotional reaction. I get it, I really do. But if you say that as a historical reality, then you SHOULD be ashamed. We are so far from being fucked. It's time for that warrior spirit, from everyone. Our best bet, actually our only realistic bet, is to mobilize the vote. There has always been a silver lining to this situation. I have always hesitated to state it, for fear of sounding like I am not taking the horror seriously. Fuck that; I do. But there has always been the possibility, there remains the possibility, that this is a time when our country faces up to its worst reflection, sees it truly, and breaks the fucking mirror. A time when the last bastion of white power and male supremacy and oligarchy attempts to enact fascism, but the antibodies of the American system and American multi-culturalism kick in to reject it. Where do you want to stand in that equation? As someone who rolled over because we’ve have had two awful years of shit that much of the world has already experienced many, many, many times over, so you decided that we’re finished and done for? Come on. Look at Europe, look at Africa, look at Asia. Back and forth with this shit, and much worse. I have your back. Get up. Here’s my hand. Let’s fight. It can’t become hip to give up. It can’t become hip to say we are fucked. Look at history. People have been so much more fucked than us, and won. If you truly believe we are finished, I’m sorry, but you were the first to fall. Stick a fork in you, turn you over, you’re done. I don’t want to see you do that, if only for the selfish reason that we need you. Do all the protests, do all the direct action, make all the phone calls, then mobilize in October and November. That’s when we can get off the ropes and start punching again. Story Ideas: Social Pressures & Expectations

As part of my submission, I have to write a screenplay from my own 5-8 minute short film. The concept for this must in some way link to Jekyll and Hyde.

I’ve had various ideas surrounding different themes of the novella, one of which is social pressures and expectations.

Within the novella a big theme was the ways in which the Victorian gentlemen were expected to behave in a particular way - their status and name meant everything to them. These people lived in a particularly repressive time, where it was frowned upon and often illegal to do various things that are considered ‘normal’ now. In fact, I feel that this theme is one that could have prevented the final outcome and they could have helped Jekyll earlier if only they were willing to intervene and see him - however, the invasion of other’s affairs and ‘gossiping’ was simply not done! Therefore no one stepped in and would rather ignore it. Even Utterson, who had an obsession over the situation and Hyde stood back many times in fear or ‘seeing something he shouldn’t’.

In the final chapter of the book in particualr, the silence from the men may indicate not a failure of words but, as in other instances, a refusal to use them. A fear of standing out and not conforming.

Throughout, the gentlemen; Enfield and Utterson, are too reserved and decorous men and wish to deny the inner darker elements of humanity. This silence reflects the repressive tendencies of Stevenson’s time. Victorian society refused to allow the discussion of many issues.

In chapter 6, Lanyon decides that some knowledge is not worth the cost of obtaining or possessing it:

“I sometimes think if we knew all, we should be more glad to get away.”

Like Utterson and Enfield, he prefers silence to the exposure of dark truths. The task of exposing these truths must fall to Henry Jekyll himself, in the final chapter of the novel. As the only character to have embraced the darker side of the world, Jekyll remains the only one willing to speak of it. These men all wish to remain trapped in the walls and social norms and expectations of society refusing to believe in other ways or explanations that they do not understand or know is ‘wrong’. This can be seen as a reflection of Victorian society and the gentlemen of the time, who would rather remain in blissful ignorance and not kick up a fuss then explore and wish to expose the truth that may cause a disturbance of some kind - their status and names are more important to them.

I feel that in many ways this pressure from society and the need to conform is still very real in this day and age. As a young female, I feel that there is a large social pressure in the way that I should look and be. The ever-growing influence from the media is a large contributor to this.

Media has created a look and their own perception of what beauty is and if you don’t conform to this, then you aren’t beautiful. We’re force fed everyday people’s perceptions of what someone should look like whether it's the size of their waist or their complexion.

Michel Maffesoli (1996) theorises that humans are tribal and social beings, who long for ‘a sense of belonging’; therefore if others believe that they should look and be a certain��way in order to be accepted then they’ll do this in an effort to conform and be liked.

Shame culture is one we touched on in a lecture, again linking to this age of media and social sites. Since everyone has some sort of access to the internet and online mediums, people have been given a voice, a platform to speak their minds. This is a great thing, particularly for people who didn’t feel that could express themselves in such ways and perhaps felt too shy or looked don’t upon to do so in person. However this security of being behind your screen, guarded by this invisible wall that protects you, people have become too confident in speaking their views. In an attempt to be liked and self-gratified, people may enjoy shaming others when someone’s view may not sit on the side with the majority. This shame and pressure can force people to change and become someone they’re not in order to be accepted and liked - because it’s what the majority think and believe.

During my travels over the Christmas holidays, I watched a film on the plane that I found really interesting. The film ‘Chak De! India’ (2007) is about the Indian Woman’s national field hockey team. This initially sparked my interest because I am a hockey player and haven't really seen a film that portrays the sport, unlike other popular spots like football.

However, this film is filled with the concepts of social pressures and the feeling of being forced to conform, but also the breaking of these pressures and challenging the ‘norm’ - specifically in relation to the stereotypes and expectations of women.

It explores themes such as feminism and sexism, the legacy of the partition of India, racial and religious bigotry, and ethnic and regional prejudice.

The film presents a poorly put together group of women who are ‘India’s best hockey players’, there isn’t a lot of belief in them to accomplish anything - even the committee are spending their share of fundings on the men’s team who have greater support.

Throughout there is a general lack of support and beliefe to the team, one of the girl’s fathers, families, boyfriend and husband not believing that this is ‘proper’ for Indian women. It is mentioned several times that the women shouldn’t ‘be running around in short skirts, but cooking and being with the children at home’. These are very traditional views of women in the 21st century, however, it is still very common for different cultures and countries like India.

Of course, the women do very well in the end and prove the country and their families that women can play sports as good as and even better then men - they are worth and can do more than the traditional views and expectations.

I’m very interested in using this theme which is strongly seen in the novella, but also one that many people can relate to, it is a timeless theme that is seen throughout the ages, from the Victorian era to today, and no doubt in the future as well.

Ideas:

1. Futuristic setting - Progression of changing and ‘making’ yourself better through enhancement and tech.

This idea came to me after reading an article about a man who planted a Bluetooth compass into his chest so that he could; like birds, have a ‘natural’ sense of direction, always knowing where north is.

The article discusses how “Liviu Babitz, 38, claims that this chip gives him a ‘new human sense.”

’The electronic chip is attached to the skin with two titanium bars, and includes a compass chip with a Bluetooth connection.The chip vibrates every time Mr Babitz faces north, transforming his body into a functioning navigational system.

People who make these adjustments are referred to as ‘biohackers’. This lead me to look into this ‘biohacking’ trend more:

“Biohackers want to make their bodies and brains function better by "hacking" their biology.”

Within it talks about Rich Lee, a man who has made various modifications to his body in order to become ‘better’ and ‘more advanced’. He describes himself as being ‘biologically fluid’.

"I want to see a biologically fluid society where people can just augment these things."

Luke Robert Mason, director of the Virtual Futures organisation, says there is a great deal of excitement around biohacking but "we are a long way from radically altering the human body in the sorts of ways they evangelise".

"What we see today are the first steps by a brave group of pioneers. Today's reality is a lot more experimental (and painful) than is often communicated to the public.

Another example was a young girl called Corina Ingram-Noehr. She discovered biohacking when recovering from a serious concussion that left struggling to speak. Her boss recommended trying medium chain triglycerides (MCT) oil, which helped her "head turn on" and acted as something of a gateway drug for biohacking.

"It opened the floodgates and I was like, 'If this works, this one little thing works so well - like, what else can I do?' "Biohacking for me is taking control of your own biology. It's taking shortcuts to get to a place that you want to be - so shortcutting your health. That's kind of how I think of it at least."

I found her story particularly interesting as her engagement came through originally needed and good intentions from a medical point of view, but this leads her to think ‘what else can I do?’. Something like this speaks to me in terms of storytelling as someone who could take things too far and begin with good and innocent intentions but becomes blinded by their need for more.

Concept 1:

A futuristic setting where a biohacker’s business has taken off and it’s become the ‘norm’ for humans to keep getting ‘upgrades’. If you don’t have the latest tech and enhancements (like the lastest phone or keeping up with the latest trends in our time) you’ll be looked down upon and seen as lesser - society has new views and a perception of what’s cool, right and beautiful. People feel forced and a need to keep buying these in order to conform.

Eventually, it’s clear that people are becoming less and less human and more machine. What’s thought of as an improvement is actually causing us to lose our individuality and unique qualities as humans. For example a new medicine or chip that helps people to stop feeling pain or upset - this seems great, however, people lose the ability to sympathise, grieve and show they care. Dealing with these pains and emotions are part of what makes us stronger and connect with others. People are becoming mindless machines and can be controlled in the end

This story can go one of two ways:

1. Single person: We follow the path of a boy who is one of the first biohackers. He has flaws and no friends, however by one day changing something (like having the navigation compass in his chest) suddenly people like him and think this is cool. This leads him to continue with this and implant more and more into him in order to be liked by others, however he soon, but too late realises that he’s lost who he is and what’s really important.

2. Society: Follow single person who is feeling forced to conform by the large consumerism society that is feeding and growing off this need to buy the latest upgrades and tech.

A young boy lives in a junkyard in a futuristic, steampunk setting. He lives and travels with his lovable robot companion, Widgit. This boy has nothing and scavenges - he lives in a world where biohackers are on the rise and society is obsessed with body and human enhancements.

and the stream punk guy has nothing and lives in a junkyard place with widgit and invents and then starts improving himself and soon he has adorers and a nice place but loses happiness and widgit and so he loses who he is and eventually improves himself too much he destroys himself xxx

The human body may be weaker physically than the mechanic, but it can do many things that machines can’t. When you tip over the edge, you lose your human side, including the ability to love, lose and empathise.

Widgit is more human than the modified humans are, because he has the ability to care.

In other words, look for purpose-driven companies that would challenge me and provide me with stretch assignments so I would continue to grow. He told me not to focus on title or the money, because that would change over time if I worked hard. Finally, [he said to] understand that there will be good days and bad days, but if the good outweigh the bad, you are on the right course.

I learned at an early age through my martial arts training—where, as a black belt and teacher, you are measured on the progress of your students—that I loved getting things done through a team as opposed to being an individual contributor. This led me into people management and my first job at Pepsi. I went on to work at ADVO and ADP before joining Intuit in 2003. I held various roles within the company before becoming CEO in 2008, and chairman in 2016.

What apps, software, or tools can’t you live without?

Time is our most precious and limited resource, therefore managing my time is my most important priority. A productivity tool that helps me is color-coding my calendar so I can see how I’m spending my time against my “100-point plan.”

I allocate my time in a 40-30-20-10 split: I spend forty percent of my time running the company through operating mechanisms and product reviews; thirty percent building our organization’s capability and leadership bench through 1:1’s, skip levels, and leadership development forums; twenty percent on outside-in learning by engaging with fellow leaders in roundtable discussions, forums and board rooms; and the last ten percent on personal growth and development, meeting with mentors and learning from others I admire. Color-coding my calendar holds me accountable and allows me to measure whether I am on track or off, so I can adjust if needed.

What’s your workspace setup like? Coffee shop with laptop and headphones? Home office with a standing desk?

I have a seated desk for when I’m focused on getting work done, a table for in-person meetings, and a video conference screen so I can meet face-to-face with people around the world.

When I’m in my office I’m surrounded by photos of my family and special memorabilia that represent the influences in my life, like my framed We Are Marshall poster, a Marshall University football, and a model of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable—with a Latin inscription that reads “leadership through serving others.” My home office is similar, with family pictures and signed photographs from my favorite movies including Forrest Gump, The Godfather, and Gladiator. Family and fighting for causes greater than oneself have always inspired me!

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or life hack?

The tip is simply-stated, but requires real commitment: never touch something more than once. For example, my email inbox is cleared every day, despite receiving several hundred emails that require action. It is not managed or sorted by an assistant. Instead, I practice the principle of read, act, file, or delete. To stay on top of it, I schedule forty-five minute meetings (versus an hour), which allows me fifteen minutes in between meetings to quickly read and act on any incoming messages.

What’s your favorite to-do list manager?

Call me old school, but I’m a pen and paper kind of guy! If I write something down I won’t forget it.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can’t you live without and why?

Google Home, because it has the power of Google search at voice command. Conversational user interface (CUI) is enabling us to do things faster than ever from shopping to getting our news, and these types of gadgets have won me over. I’ve just been looking for the one that can understand my West Virginian accent, and luckily they keep getting smarter!

What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else? What’s your secret?

I’m not sure I am better than everyone else at anything, but I do write poetry. My wife and my two daughters each have poems that I’ve written for them framed on their walls. My wife has one that was written before our wedding, and another that I wrote when she chose to leave her profession to be a stay-at-home mother. Each of my daughters’ poems were written the night of their birth. While they aren’t world-class poems, they are sincere expressions of my love and gratitude for having them in my life, and for helping me strive to be a better man each and every day.

What do you listen to while you work? Got a favorite playlist? Maybe talk radio? Or do you prefer silence?

While I am a musician myself (guitar and sax) and I am constantly inspired by music, it has its place in my life. I tend to work in silence, which allows me to focus 100 percent of my concentration and energy on the task at hand. However, during a break or at home, my playlist is quite eclectic—80’s rock, contemporary country, and some classical music tossed in for good measure. Lyrics matter most to me, so good songwriters are a plus!

What are you currently reading? Or what’s something you’d recommend?

I’d highly recommend a book I recently read called Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth. It’s full of amazing, inspirational stories that show that anyone, regardless of I.Q., talent, or background, can succeed if they have grit—a blend of passion and persistence. I’m a big fan of this school of thought—one of my strongest personal beliefs is that it doesn’t matter where you went to school. This book makes all of us underdogs feel like we’re just as capable as anybody else.

How do you recharge? What do you do when you want to forget about work?

Spending time with my wife and daughters is my favorite way to recharge. I also love to go to the movie theater. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been touched by the power of movies, and I find some of my greatest inspiration comes from them.

What’s your sleep routine like? Are you a night owl or early-riser?

I’ve always been a morning person, so on a typical day I get up early, around 5:30 or 5:45 a.m. I work out every morning, I do P90X and I watch [CNBC’s] Opening Bell. Then I read a couple of papers: The Wall Street Journal and the Huntington Herald Dispatch before getting into the office around 8 a.m. I usually get out of the office a little after 7 p.m., get home, have dinner, and spend time with my wife. I’m in bed about 9 p.m. That’s the program!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

My Dad is no longer with me, but the best advice I ever received was from him on making tough career choices. He offered three simple guideposts:

Surround yourself with people smarter than you: According to Dad, this was important for choosing where you work, because it ensures that you will constantly be learning and growing. With this in mind, I have always been drawn to work in organizations where the bar is high.

Volunteer for assignments no one else wants: Once you find the right environment, volunteer to work on the hardest and most unwanted problems facing the organization, because that’s where you’ll stretch yourself and be forced to grow in ways you wouldn’t have planned. In addition, every boss has something that no one wants to do, and if you volunteer to take it on, it will distinguish you from others and establish you as the “go-to person” for tough problems.

Finally, make sure you can pay your bills: The last thing Dad told me was to never prioritize big dollars and big business cards over the principles above. He cautioned that if I did, I would most likely find myself in a position where the number of bad days outweighed the good ones. As for paying my bills, Dad was always someone who fulfilled the promises he made. For him, bills were a promise of payment. So he closed by saying “but always try to make enough to pay your bills!”
