Hello! Are there any books that exceeded your expectations this year? 😊
Hiiii!
I've had such an up and down reading year this year. How has this year gone for you? I've had some low lows and some high highs this year.
So, me being me, I have a list of books that surpassed my expectations. 😆
Royals by Rachel Hawkins was oddly good for me? Almost 4 stars.
Greymist Fair by Francesca Zappia was better than anticipated. Over 4 stars.
The Curse of Broken Shadows by Laura Winter was one I didn't know what to expect walking into it but it was a solid 4 star book for me. The character work is just chef's kiss.
Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison is my Christmas entry to this list. It was a SOLID romance and it had a lot of Christmassiness to make my heart happy. (4.25 stars from me.)
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Look. Look. I KNOW. I know. But this book had me twirling my hair and blushing like a school girl. I don't know what you want from me. (One of only a handful of 5 star reads from me out of 164 books so far this year.)

Hey, Carrie! How are you doing? Have you read any new horror releases? Or are there any horror releases you're looking forward to? :)
Hi sweetface! I'm so glad you asked! 💛
I'm loving T. Kingfisher's What Moves the Dead, which comes out in July. I read a copy through NetGalley, and it's definitely one of my favorite reads so far this year. I also have copies of Black Tide by KC Jones and Lucky Girl by Mary Rickert in my queue, so I'm excited to get to those!
As for other new horror releases, Hide by Kiersten White fell a bit short for me. It's fun, but I figured out the plot twist way too soon and kind of ruined it for myself. 😖 Sundial by Catriona Ward wasn't quite as strong for me as The Last House on Needless Street either.
I just read and adored Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall, so I'm super excited about her new book, These Fleeting Shadows! I'm also looking forward to The Sacrifice by Rin Chupeco, The Children on the Hill by Jennifer McMahon, Into the Sublime by Kate A. Boorman, and looking a little further ahead at next year, Don't Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones.
How about you? Any new horror I should add to my list?

Hi! What was your last 5 star read? And what made you like it so much? Have a nice day 🌻
Hi! Thank you for the ask✨
Im gonna give you my last two, because I feel like they’re an extension of the same answer, my last two five stars were Howls Moving Castle and Castle in the Air, both by Diana Wynne Jones.
What I liked about them both, was the soft easy fantasy adventure the characters are set off to, in most fantasy books I’ve come across the stakes are always high and you feel like everyone is in danger all the time, but with Diana’s book things stay mellow for most of the book and it doesn’t take away from the emotion of the story, both books were such a lovely read, but I do feel like I wouldn’t have enjoyed Castle in the Air as much if I hadn’t read Howls Moving Castle first, (because I feel like you could read one without the other) because the return of the characters was one of my favorite parts, especially when it was revealed the characters were there all along!
What about you? What have been this months favorite reads ?
Have a lovely day today! 🌼

Hello! I'm here as a member of the introvert bookworm support group to check how you're doing this holiday season ✨️ What books do you want to finish before the end of the year?
Hiya fellow introvert 😚 Thanks for the ask ✨
Kinda late with this reply because holiday season didn't start well 🥲 My vacation got spent managing some personal problems at home and now I'm back at work with so many distractions at home that I can't concentrate on anything (hating WFH right now).
I'm almost done with my yearly reading. Did manage to read 2 books in the last week. I just want to finish my current read (A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher) before the year end. I have a few new books lined up for the new year ☺️

Hello, Rose! What are your top 5 favorite bookish pictures you took this year? 💫
Oh! That's a tough question. Hmm. I think my top 5 and not what the note count says is this in no particular order:
And an honorable mention to:
My book and nature photos tend to be my favorite and a big part of that is the lighting always looks so much better.
Thanks for asking @therefugeofbooks! I had fun looking at all my pictures for the year!!!!

Hello ✨️ your photos always make me crave food! So I'm here with a very important and serious question: what's your top 5 baked good/pastries to eat while reading? 👀
And have you decided what's the first book you'll read in 2023?
Oh damn that’s a hard question! I absolutely love baking so it’s really hard to pick, and of course they make great accessories for book photos haha
I’d probably have to go with my staples, the things I make the most often, not in any particular order:
1. Custard horns
2. Lemon syrup cake
3. Shortbread
4. Lemon meringue cupcakes
5. Brownies
I started reading One of Us is Lying the other day, which is my first book for the year.
Thanks for asking :)

Hi! 17 and 20 for the ask game?
Another 17! Okay, Did any books surprise you with how good they were?: Besides Dear Senthuran and The Impossible Resurrection of Grief, another book that surprised me was How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu. It was surprising mostly because I had no real expectations besides it being a book that some readers had associated with the concept of solarpunk, or at least a kind of ecofiction. I did stay away from reviews though so I really had no clue what I was getting into but I really enjoyed it. It was a bittersweet story to say the least.
20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?: I had a number of anticipated releases and read only 3 of them lol. One was Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes and it was a solid read. I was a bit disappointed though because it went from a horror story about a haunted space ship into an action story toward the end and I felt like we didn't spend enough time with the horrors. The other was A Prayer For the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers. I adored the first novella in the series and liked this one too, just not as much as the first. The last anticipated read was Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield and that one was very good. Less cosmic horror that I anticipated but that was fine because the overarching themes of grief and love kept me invested.

7, 8 and 12 for the book ask? 😊
Ello!!! Thank you so much for sending in an ask <3
7: is there a series/book that got you into reading? i've loved reading ever since I was little, so i guess maybe some children's series like Geronimo Stilton, Dork Diaries, Billie B Brown, Pony Pals, EJ12 (idk if these are as popular globally as they are in australia)
8: what is the first book you remember reading yourself? There's this really famous children's book that they ritualistically make every child read in Australia called The Rainbow Fish (among others), so that's mine heheh
12: did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings? oooh this is a good question because I actually enjoyed most of my high school compulsory books, probably because I was in the Literature class, not the general English class. My favourite was hands down, The Handmaid's Tale. Love that books so muchh I will never get tired of it.
Send me some bookish asks (please)!

Mexican Gothic for the book ask? And happy birthday 🎉🥳
never heard of | never read | want to read | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
I always seem to be drawn to and disappointed by spooky gothic house stories, but the plot twist in this one delighted me!
(And thank you!)

Hello! 2, 12 and 22 dor the ask game? ✨️
End of year book asks
2 - Did you reread anything? What?
I didn't this year! I usually reread The Night Circus at least once a year. This year, for some reason, it just didn't feel right.
12 - Any books that disappointed you?
A couple of them, yes! The Massey Murder by Charlotte Gray, and Gap Year in Ghost Town by Michael Pryor. The Massey Murder was just really out of town and long-winded for a true crime account of a woman defending herself against the unwanted advances of her employer. Gap Year in Ghost Town just really didn't do it for me.
22 - What’s the longest book you read?
Brothersong by T.J. Klune at 522 pages.

It is my belief that the World (or, if you will, the House, since the two are for all practical purposes identical) wishes an Inhabitant for Itself to be a witness to its Beauty and the recipient of its Mercies.
