Posted @withregram • @wild.planet The Rhino Orphanage has had a very special and unique arrival in 7 day old giraffe calf “Jazz”. Jazz was found dehydrated and in a near-comatose state last week at just 2 days old after being abandoned by his mother for an unknown reason. He was taken into the orphanage and, after an assessment by Dr Pierre, had a catheter placed so he could be started immediately on TPN (intravenous feeding - often reserved for the most critical patients). He was also started on IV fluids and within a day or so was able to tentatively stand and walk around the room - making it a bit Baby giraffes are notoriously difficult to get onto a bottle, not to mention require extremely labour intensive care, but as Jazz has come out of his comatose state over the past days he has also slowly taken to the bottle with the encouragement of his new best friend Hunter (despite occasionally falling asleep during feeds!). In what is possibly the cutest friendship of all time, Hunter is the teams anti-poaching and security dog, who immediately took a shining to Jazz when he arrived and has refused to leave his side ever since. Hunter even stopped eating for the first few days of Jazz’s arrival and only regained his appetite once his new friend had begun to take the bottle! With giraffe numbers dramatically declining over recent years in what’s being called a “silent extinction” - with a subspecies even being moved onto the endangered list for the first time - every individual is critical to overall conservation efforts, and Jazz is no exception. * Update Jazz 🦒 & Hunter 🐕* Amazingly the past 2 or 3 days our AP Dog Hunter has noticed that his giraffe friend Jazz, has been feeling a lot better. Hunter now has the peace of mind it seems to leave Jazz for short periods to catch up with his brother Duke and his favourite activity, swimming in the water troughs. It doesn't take him long to pop in the room to check up on Jazz though, and he still sleeps in the room with the carers and Jazzy. 🦒 It’s Our Planet... One of the most valuable & special trips took place when I was a) recovering from being sick, partially rainy most of the weekend but none of this hindered it from being such a pivotal time spent with my favorite @thegreatsparky . An orphaned rhino at around 9 months old drinks 20 litres of milk per day! Making rhino rehab pretty expensive. We have developed our own special "Rhino-shake" recipe packed with probiotics, slow release carbs and fibre, a little more costly but important for having strong healthy rhino bums. Happy #RhinoFriday Update on Kwayera by @savingthesurvivors “Remember the baby orphan we rescued when he was found wandering the bush alone? Our Veterinary Assistant Dot spent a week stabilising him before Dr. Johan took him in the helicopter to The Rhino Orphanage where he is going from strength to strength! Kwayera is doing very well. He has been joined up with an older orphan "Kraaitjie" a very sweet little girl. You can see how small he is at about 9 months old, but Kraaitjie is 14 months old and is having a very good influence on him. He is trying his best to eat dry food with Kraaitjie. His carers have taken out his 3am milk feed and he is now moving onto the normal milk schedule with 5 feeds per day instead of every 3 hours. He is also starting to drink more fresh water from the trough.
