actually I will say this. it fucking SUCKS that the devil to pay in the backlands only ever got the one very mediocre translation. it's a really good book, and a big part of why it was so groundbreaking is that it's written like the main character (a now old "cowboy") is talking to you, with all the slang and the colloquialism and even the made up words. and then this translation just fucking. NOT does that???

for example the very first word in the book is "nonada", a made up word meant as a mash of "não é nada" (it's nothing) all into one word. in the very first word you can see that this is a guy with a strong accent and very little formality in how he speaks to the listener/reader. in the translation, it's just "it's nothing". no localization, no informality, no effort in translating the experience. sure you got the literal meaning translated right, but you threw away an entire side of the narrator's characterization!!

also it literally skipped a sentence where the narrator says he thought about holding and kissing his (guy) best friend when they were arguing. mediocre AND homophobic

I have coughed so hard that i have fully - FULLY - dislodged my menstrual cup.

Bad experience with an IRL person finding the account anyways had the reverse effect of a logical reaction, and I want "fuckit" and started censoring less of my face....

But I still gained a kind of complex/insecurity about my nose and chin, which are the most masc parts of me. It also just feels weirdly exposed to show them publicly online now. My full uncensored face is in enough DMs and discord servers, and I'm very doxxable as is, so I don't try to lie to myself and say it's for privacy - but it is for insecurity.

nah, i was just trying to not be a mood killer in the liveblog. but it was poor things. everything about that movie felt like the film equivalent of nails on a chalk-board, at once noisy and incoherent and stupidly on the nose but without anything deeper to say and expensive when your average b-movie managed the same thing using tape and a budget of rolled up fivers and favours from your mum's boyfriend who's alright at a bit of computer effects

and i get pretentious and a tad obsessive when i see claims of "you just don't get it, it's about this you see? she's taking control of her own story!" and im like. no no i get it. i just think it was shallow at best, offensive on multiple points, and also a wannabe camp attempt at shock value (do people watch genuinely shocking camp films anymore?) many things. so many things, several of which ive not seen anyone mention, but then i was trying not to over-obsess about a film that i disliked so intensely, so i didnt go too deep in my search (the lack of intersectionality in feminist masterpiece "if you're rich, you can follow your dreams and self-actualise and even slum it with the personality-less whores for a bit, and also take a brief moment to feel bad about poor people even if they may "rape and rob and kill you" (seriously what was that bit about?)" the ableism in emma stone's performance, the male gaze inherent in so many of the sex scenes, and perhaps subjectively but the dullness of the sex scenes, the het-focus with a single rushed "women stick together" bit of queer sex, although the other woman had no plotline of her own in this film and just randomly reappeared at the end for some cheap unearned catharsis, the way the storyline is structured like three different movies squashed together, and also the flatness of every dude in the story that still seemed to try to say that some of them were actually quite nice, because idk. they weren't foaming at the mouth villains or whatever, this one's a Nice Guy. and this one's a Eunuch. moving on. if emma stone isn't a born sexy yesterday, then she's doing an ableist caricature of a performance of "weird quirky girl who functions Differently." the joke is, it's both)

like. ive seen better explorations of frankenstein. ive seen better explorations of sex workers. ive seen better explorations of women gaining agency. ive seen better explorations of disabled women. ive seen better explorations of patriarchy, intersectional feminism, socialism (seriously, the way this movie approached politics seemed to be "if we insert a witty line here about being the means of our own production, that's the same as political analysis, right?")

many of those things ive seen specifically done better in 1990 b-movie horror frankenhooker, and as for the rest, i don't have to search all that hard either. put on a john waters film and you've got more going forya for a start.

I don’t care about the checkmarks and I’m probably not gonna buy one unless I can think of some really funny way to use it. and to be clear, this post isn’t really about that.

but it was the inspiration for this post, because I saw some interesting secondhand discourse on the topic, which reminded me of this old XKCD episode

but I think there’s a better point to be made in this neighborhood than the sorta gratuitous “take that” approach Munroe used there

which is that if you let yourself get to the point where you see any expenditure of money “for fun” as wicked because there’s children starving in detroit, you have fallen for one of the central lies that money tries to indoctrinate us with: that you can math out everything in terms of +EV and opportunity cost, even things like good and evil.

and the reason you can’t math it out is that:

nobody on planet fucking earth knows enough to actually math out the consequences of an action. nobody has that level of perspective or context.

even if they did, how do you price those consequences against each other? there’s no way to compare one person’s pain to another’s; you’ll getting meaningless results, worse than useless. there’s a reason that we say “there’s no winners in misery poker”.

even if you could compare, how do you add or subtract? how do you do basic arithmetic when we know the hedonic treadmill exists, or that beyond a certain minimum successful care produces over-unity of happiness?

but we think we can anyway. we think we can b/c we live in a world where everything costs money and everyone needs money, where we’ve been trained to think that you can just convert X into a dollar-denominated opportunity cost and compare that way.

but that ain’t how good and evil work, and it ain’t how our hearts work. and it’s a deadly risk, because as soon as you start trying to do that math, you can get your arm twisted into believing that enough money can make something wrong into something right (b/c you can donate it to make something better happen than the bad thing you did). which, to be clear, is nonsense, and it’s the kind of thinking that ate Ana Mardoll (f’rex) alive.

or you start wondering if your existence is somehow a net negative to the world b/c you happen to take prescription meds paid for by medicaid. which, to be clear, is also nonsense and eats people alive every day.

and all this shit erodes your moral sense, your... fuckit, I’m just gonna say your conscience. b/c you keep telling it “no this good thing is bad actually because of the math” or vice versa until you get so much practice at it that nothing feels good anymore, or nothing feels bad anymore. and now you’re entirely off in deep space without even anything to base your busted math on.

I don’t claim to have all the answers. my own mutant ass take on virtue ethics is probably not an effective coda to this post b/c it’s not actually the point. and I’m definitely not saying that you shouldn’t spend your money on good causes. it’s good to care, and it’s good to act on that care! you’ll probably even enjoy it! but that’s not the point either. the point is more that “you should quit your topic X because my topic Y is more important” or “you should give up on real human being Z because my topic Y is more important” are snake oil, because you can’t even do math to those things in the first place without getting yourself irrecoverably, tragically confused.

Like I do think that behavior like this is probably coming from a deep need for attention, and I think sometimes people pick fights and act unpleasant because they come to (even subliminally) desire the adrenaline/dopamine of causing an argument or being confronted. That's why I think engaging in drama (aside from generally being a waste of time lol) can be really unproductive. Like, sometimes when you take the bait you're actually enabling this person in something destructive, and maybe it's more morally appropriate to ignore it (thus taking their toys away) while also being sort of like, petty and funnier to know that they're floundering and desperate for a response. 😳 I mean is there any bigger fuck you than to ignore anon hate and know that this jackass is refreshing your page 80 times a day waiting for a response? LOL.

And like I'm human like anyone else, I do say these things and try to be principled and there are days I really just lose it and can't shut the fuck up LOL. I think personally I get very upset when someone ELSE is being harassed, or like, when bad behavior affects the entire fandom. So I apologize for any time I came in and acted immature or vagued anyone because I really do my best to be direct and speak to people directly! But sometimes they delete your comments so like fuckit man I tried lol.

In general I'm a big believer in like, writing what you want to read, and that extends to creating a fandom you actually want to be in. So I try not to engage in drama or share discourse (even when I agree with the talking points!) because I think of my blog like a little scrapbook of things that make me feel happy and creative and I want to protect that. I want that to be my contribution in a fandom, to share things that encourage creativity ! But now and then when someone is being a real fuckin twat you also have to stand up for each other and protect the space in that way, too.

What we're not gonna do is shame creators and chase them out!!!! If you don't like someone's work, keep that in your group chat! Don't be a fucking twat!

And when you use the skill, your guy just yells "GET THE FUCK UP" and whoever it is you're looking at shrugs off their wounds and gets the fuck up.
