hi there! im sure with the advent of a trigun rerelease upon us you've gotten a lot of asks about this over the past couple of days, but in the case you haven't been asked that: do you still plan to move forward with overhaul 2.0 even with the news of a reprint? i ask this with no disrespect or hopes that you do cease work on it, but im interested in hearing your thoughts and feelings about how to proceed.
as well, I'm curious to hear your take on this, do you believe dark horse will redo the translation? or simply edit it? i haven't read much dark horse manga so im not sure historically how they would handle a reprint for a manga that has been out of print for so long, especially since, imo, at this point they would have to meet or exceed your excellent translation. similar to how official video game rereleases at the bare minimum have to meet the current emulation standard- if that makes sense.
btw i just want to say thank you for your in depth and explanatory answers to the many questions you get regarding translation nuances and the work that goes into cleaning and typesetting from scratch and the logic behind your choices. i speak the language but still love hearing the thought process other translators go through when they make certain decisions. it's awesome how much passion you have for trigun and this project as well as helping people to understand choices in the original text and how you translated them for your text.
Hey there and thank you for your question!
We have not been asked specifically about this yet, so your question is very welcome.
We fully intend to continue with Overhaul 2.0, even in light of a Trigun Deluxe release, which the team is ecstatic about, by the way. The need for a digital version for people to read on their computers, phones and other devices remains, and the quality of life that comes with it. Larger pages, the ability to zoom in, very crisp black and white differences, all of these factors can be helpful for people who might find reading difficult due to various health or mental health conditions.
On top of that, it will be free for those who are not fortunate enough to be able to buy expensive Deluxe releases, or the very expensive regular releases, for that matter. We always encourage people to eventually find a way to support the original creator, which is why we suggest buying the digital version of the manga on Dark Horse Comic's own website and not buy second hand books. But until that is economically responsible for people to buy, we offer them a chance to read an accurate translation online in the meantime.
Personally, I doubt they will redo the translation, as the translation for the Berserk Deluxe release remained the same. I don't know if the translation was changed for the Deluxe Hellsing release, but given the trend with their first Deluxe release, I also doubt it.
Of course, they could have changed their procedures for these releases over time and decided some lines or words needed to be changed, however it remains to be seen. Were they to update the translation, we would be very interested in reading it to see the differences, and then determine if it has improved.
Not one wishing to question other industry professionals when it comes to translation, I must still say that Dark Horse comics has repeatedly proven to engage in assembly line translation. Each translation isn't deeply studied, engaged with or understood by the translators, and the work is passed to several individuals with no communication, as is evident by the changing translation of names and words. They do not have the time or means to study the text they are translating, and therefore will ultimately always release a somewhat clumsy but passable script.
None of the translators are incompetent, that is clear, they are instead bound by their workspace regulations to follow the set procedure within the company. You can draw comparisons between the translation industry and production industry; we have the perfect-every-time, cookie-cutter, assembly line product that will do its job but only that, and then the handmade, personalized and polished to the tiniest detail product. Of course, handmade products can come with imperfections caused by the work being done by hand, but that either adds character or can be corrected through recipient engagement.
Thank you so much for your kind words, though. We try our best to be as informative and transparent as we can about our project, while also spacing out information and avoiding to repeat ourselves too much. It is interesting to write about our process too, as it does put the work we do into perspective, even helping with reflection upon how we do it and how we might improve.
So everyone is free to ask about our team, our process or anything that might interest you, and I'll answer to the best of my abilities!

Reacting to TLAT Reviews pt2
I saw Thor: Love and Thunder last night and my friend @marvelvibess just sent me these hilarious reviews of the movie. They are too good not to react to honestly.
Tumblr media
{Image description: light grey text on a black background reading: WORSE marvel movie ever!!! Kirby Lee Ditko Steranko and the gang from marvel NEVER not one time created ANY character openly gay or announcing they were gay ..so marvel , Disney stop pushing this please. Create a character that is and so be it.
Korg is not GAY!!No Eternal was gay and in the printed issues I collect never will be. Btw fat man can’t tie his shoes much less be a superhero. This is ridiculous already. Make up your own stories and contaminate those characters. Don’t destroy something that will never be gay! You can’t change a written story for moneys liking. I worked with a gay captain for 11 yrs has nothing to do with pro or anti anything!!! end image discription}
I love this one just because of how wrong it is. A list of canon queer characters from marvel comics: Valkyrie, Korg, Maria Hill, Ayo, Aaron Fisher (Captain America of the railways), William Kaplan (Wiccan), Theodor Altman (Hulkling), Arnie Roth (Steve Roger’s best friend from the 40s and one of the the inspirations for Movie!Bucky), Tony Stark (never officially says but it is heavily implied, here is a good post on it) Yelena Belova, and those are just the 10 I can think of off the top of my head. In fact marvel has a comic called “Marvel Voices: Pride” that is all short comics about many of its queer and trans super heroes!
Also, the thing about Disney making stuff queer for the money really bugs me because its literally the exact opposite. Marvel is straight washing their characters for the movies because they’re afraid it won’t sell otherwise. Money and capitalism is why it is taking so long for us to get the good queer rep we want/need.
Tumblr media
{Image description: at the top left there are 4 stars in a line one is yellow while the other 4 are white. The text is light grey on a black background and it reads: Definitely would not recommend for anyone who has free time to watch because it was a waste of my time and money. The overall story was all over the place because of the constant narrative cut scenes, and with propaganda littered throughout the whole movie of LBGTQ+ness it is another reminder of how superheros can’t just be super.
The different representations of the other gods was pretty sad of 2022, and with the whole conflict of the movie being about the “god butcher’ he should have left more of a lasting impression on the characters in the movie. Instead to me all i got was “boggie man” and that was a bit of a downer compared to other more well developed characters. If the original Norse mythology is on your radar there were a couple of fun quips referencing them. However, your beloved characters from Thor Ragnarok end up being drivers for the problems in this world and supporting it, and that is not my cup of tea. end image description}
Ok say it with me DIVERSITY ISN’T PROPAGANDA PEOPLE JUST EXIST. DIVERSITY ISN’T PROPAGANDA PEOPLE JUST EXIST. DIVERSITY ISN’T PROPAGANDA PEOPLE JUST EXIST.

Hey, sorry to ask this, but a few days ago I saw a post/discussion about the history of original work on ao3 (i.e. how and when it was allowed). I thought it was in my likes, but it's not, and I thought you had reblogged it recently, but I didn't find it. I was wondering if you have seen this discussion around? Or where I can find more about it? This specific post talked abt how who defended original work on ao3 were not the BNFs, if that helps.
That was me running my mouth in the reblogs of something or other. It’s just the one comment.
But what’s that you say? Some tl;dr about a pet topic? Don’t mind if I do! ;) (To be honest, most of this debate happened years ago, and a lot of the long meta was by me back then too, so…)
Okay, so, the situation with Original Works is actually super interesting and a microcosm of early years OTW wank.
This is going to be even more tl;dr than my usual. To try to summarize very briefly:
There were two big cultural factions. One thought “original” was the opposite of “fan”. That one was in charge of OTW. It was hard to get voices from the other side into the debate because they already felt excluded from OTW.
This divide broke down more or less into Ye Olde Slash Fandom on the “it’s the opposite” side and anime fandom on the “WTF?” side. Americans on one side and a lot of non-US, non-English language fandom on the other.
I. Media Fandom, Anime Fandom, and Early OTW
I went to that first fundraising party that astolat threw in New York City back in… god… 2007? 2008? I wasn’t on the Board or any official position until the committees got started later, but I was around right from the very beginning.
Whether you’re looking at volunteers or at people who commented on astolat’s original post, there were always a variety of fans from a variety of fannish backgrounds. People aren’t absolutely in one camp or another, and fannish interests change over time. If you go dig through Dreamwidth posts to find who was actually participating in this debate at the time, half of them are probably in the other camp now.
If you think like that sounds like a preamble to me making a bunch of offensively sweeping generalizations and divvying fans up into little groups, you’d be right! Haha.
I.a. Ye Olde Media Fandom
There are a lot of camps of people who like fanfic. One of the biggest divisions has been Ye Olde Media Fandom vs. anime fandom. Astolat’s social circle–my LJ social circle–was filled with people with decades of fannish experience and a deep knowledge of the Media Fandom side of things.
Those fandom history treatises that start with K/S zines in Star Trek fandom in the 70s and move on through the mainstream buddy cops like Starsky & Hutch to the more niche, sff buddy cops like Fraser and Ray or Jim and Blair are talking about Media Fandom. I try to always capitalize it because the name is lulzy and bizarre to me unless it’s a proper noun for a specific historical thing. It was coined as a rude term for “mass media” fandom aka dumb people who like, ughhhh, Star Trek, ughhh, instead of books. This is a very ancient slapfight from the type of fandom you find at Worldcon, often called “SF fandom” or plain “fandom”.
(Yes, this leads to mega confusion on the part of some old dudes when they find Fanlore and fail to understand that “fandom” there refers to what these people would call “Media Fandom”. They think only they get the unmarked form. But I digress…)
Media Fandom is a specific flavor of fandom. It’s where the slash zines were. It’s where the fans of live action US TV shows were. It’s the history that acafans have laid out well and that tends to get used to defend the idea of a female subculture writing transgressive and transformative fanfic. On the video side, Media Fandom is where Kandy Fong invented vidding by making Star Trek slideshows.
(Kandy’s still around, BTW. She’s usually at Escapade in L.A. Ask her to tell you about the dancing penises sketch in person. She’s hilarious.)
Astolat and friends had been going to slash cons for years. They founded Vividcon. And Yuletide. That meant that when astolat said “Hey kids, let’s put on a show!” we all jumped to help. This is a lady who gets things done.
From a Worldcon perspective, or even from an older Media Fandom perspective, this group was comparatively young, hip, and welcoming. Their fandom interests were comparatively broad. Just look at Yuletide!
In fact, yes, let us look at Yuletide… [ominous music]
I.b. Yuletide sucks at anime
From the very first year (2003), Yuletide mods have asked for help with anime fandoms, been confused about anime fandoms, or made bad judgment calls about anime fandoms. They’ve fucked up on Superhero comics and plenty of other things over the years, but anime has been the most consistent (well, and JRPGs, but there’s so much overlap in those fic fandoms).
There was already bad feeling about this. There were years of bad feeling about this.
I.c. Where are the historians?
Academic study of fanficcy things pretty much got started with Textual Poachers and Enterprising Women. Other acafans who are well known to LJ and later Tumblr are people like Francesca Coppa who wrote a very nice summary of the history of Media Fandom. These are not the only academics who exist, these academics themselves have written about many other things, and by now, OTW’s own journal has covered a lot of other territory, but to this day I see complaints on Tumblr that “acafans” only care about K/S and oldschool slash fandom.
There were years of bad feeling about this as well.
I.d. What kind of fan was I?
Now, by the time OTW got started, I’d moseyed over to not only a lot of live action US TV but a lot of old-as-fuck US TV that is squarely in the Media Fandom camp. But once upon a time, I was a weeaboo hanging out with my weeaboo friends in college. I learned Japanese (sort of). I moved to Japan. Livin’ the weeaboo dream!
More importantly, I used to be a member of a lot of anime mailing lists back in the Yahoo Groups days. I didn’t realize what a cultural gap that would cause until the original works issue came up on AO3.
I.e. Anime Fandom, German-language Fandom, Original M/M
Once upon a time–namely in that Yahoo Groups era–there was an archive called Boys in Chains. It was where you found The Good Stuff™. Heavy kink and power exchange galore! It was extremely well known in the parts of fandom I was in, even if you weren’t on the associated mailing list. It contained lots of fic, but it also had lots of original work.
Around that same era, I was on a critique list called Crimson Ink, which was mixed fic and original. The “original slash” and “original yaoi” crowds mixed freely and were in fanfic spaces. Remember, this is like 2003. You’re never going to get your gay fantasy novel published in English in the US. A couple of fangirl presses started around then, but they died an ignominious death after their first print run.
Fanfiction.net used to allow original work before it spun that off into FictionPress. We forget this today, but if you were an early FFN person, the separation wasn’t so great either.
Meanwhile, German-language fandom was hanging out on sites like Animexx.de, a big-ass fic archive that prominently mentions also including original work. I have the impression that Spanish-language fandom was similar too.
Shousetsu Bang*Bang was founded in 2005. It was a webzine for original m/m, but it was entirely populated by fanfic fandom types.
In all of those kinds of spaces, there was a lot of “original” work that was kind of slash or BL-ish and seen as fannish if it was posted in the fannish space. These weren’t anime-only spaces. They were multifandom spaces where it was seen as obvious and normal that a couple of huge fandoms like Harry Potter would dominate but that everything else big would naturally be anime.
While fans from every background are everywhere, I found that the concentration of EFL fans living in Continental Europe, South America, and Asia was much higher in this kind of space, even the exclusively English language part of it, than in my US TV fandoms.
II. AO3 Early Adopters
AO3 went into closed beta in 2009. In 2010, it was open to the general public (albeit with the invitation queue it still has). But not everyone was interested yet. Just like fandom is loath to leave the dying, shambling mess of Tumblr, fandom was loath to leave dwindling LJ/DW circles or was happy enough on Fanfiction.net. I used to see a lot of posts like “Why are you guys trying to STEAL fanfic from the original! FFN is enough!”
I literally could not give away the invitations I had. No one wanted them.
So who was on AO3? Obviously enough, it was all of us who built it and our friends. So that means a bunch of oldschool Livejournal slashers coming from fandoms like Due South or Stargate Atlantis.
The queue was open. Anyone could make an account. Everyone was welcome. In theory…
But more and more, there started to be these posts about how “AO3 Hates Anime Fandom” and “FFN is for anime. AO3 is for Western fandoms.” and “If you guys actually wanted anime fandom on there, you’d invite us better and make us more welcome.”
At the time, I found these posts obnoxious. People aren’t purely in one sort of fandom or the other. No one was stopping anime fandom from making accounts. No one was banning anime fandom. If there wasn’t much from old fandoms, that was because old fandoms seldom move.
Things began to change. Trolls on FFN forced the Twilight porn writers out, creating enough fuss and brouhaha to mobilize people who would rather have stayed put. AO3 got big enough that randos found it by accident. Original work started to pop up, posted by people who’d never looked at the rules and had no idea it was not allowed.
III. History of AO3’s Policy
I had argued for allowing “original work” during the initial discussions about the ToS. On one side of this issue was me. On the other, everyone else on the committee.
I was overruled.
Open Door started importing old archives to save them. Boys in Chains was hugely important to fandom history from my point of view. It was slated to be imported… maybe. Except that Boys in Chains is half original. AO3 was happy to grandfather in those stories, but the final archive owner felt, quite rightly, that it would be unfair to tell half of the authors they were welcome in the new space while spitting on the other half.
I was pissed. I had been pissed since being overruled the first time. To me, the fact that it should be allowed was so blatantly obvious that it was hard to even explain why.
(To be honest, this difficulty in explaining why and the even greater difficulty in figuring out the source of that difficulty is what held the discussion back for so long. When every assumption on either side is completely opposite, it’s hard to communicate.)
I felt betrayed. It would be like if you helped build something, and everyone was suddenly like “Well, obviously, we can’t allow m/m. It’s not normal fanfic.”
So we discussed it again and, again, it was me vs. literally everyone else. And still the “AO3 is only for Western slash fandom” bitching rose in volume and more and more people complained of feeling excluded from the new fandom hub. Finally, the committee agreed to open the issue up for public comment and get some more input. I was a fool and neither wrote nor proofread the post. It went out phrasing the question as allowing “non fannish” work or something of that sort.
I was furious. The entire point of the whole debate was that I saw some original work, the original work that belongs on AO3, as inherently fannish. And now this had been presented to the AO3 audience as something completely different. Think pieces were popping up in the journals of everyone I knew about diluting AO3’s mission and how we needed to save AO3 from encroachment. Public opinion was very negative. That’s both because of how the post was phrased and because OTW die hards at the time were mostly from the same fannish background. This tidal wave of negativity meant that there was virtually no chance of changing this poisonous rule. And if the rule didn’t change, the people who wanted the rule change were never going to show up to explain why it mattered.
If you’ve been reading my tumblr, I think you can guess what happened next.
I posted a long post to my Dreamwidth. It was a masterwork of passive aggression. In it, I wrung my hands about how simply tragic it would be if AO3 had to delete all of the original work… like anthropomorfic.
Now, I think anthropomorfic counts as fanfic as much as anything else, but I also knew that it fails most rigorous “based on a canon” type definitions of fic and, more importantly, it’s a favorite Yuletide fandom of many of the people on the side that wanted to ban original work.
That’s a nice fandom of yours. It would be a pity if something happened to it.
Yup. Passive aggressive blackmail. Go me. Suddenly, there was a lot of awkward backtracking and confused running in circles in various journals. The committee agreed to table the idea for a while but not rule out the idea of allowing original works in the future. We agreed to halt all deletions of original work. If a fan posted it, the Abuse Committee (which I was also head of at the time) would not delete that work even though it was technically against the rules.
Time passed. The people on the negative side got tired. I wanted off that committee and had wanted off for ages, but I was damned if I was going to leave before ramming through this piece of policy. Grudgematch till I die! (Look, I never said I wasn’t a wanker.)
After a while, some other fans came forward with more types of “original work” as evidence that it should be allowed. These were from parts of fandom none of us on the committee knew a damn thing about.
This new evidence combined with the gradual accretion of original stuff on AO3 without the sky falling eventually led us to quietly rule Original Work a valid fandom. There was never even a big announcement post. I slipped a word to the Boys in Chains mod myself.
IV. What Were They So Afraid Of Anyway?
So why were people so resistant? Seems like a dick move, right?
Not exactly.
I mean, I was enraged and waged a one-woman war to change the rules, but the other side wasn’t nuts. The objections were usually the following:
I just don’t get why it would be allowed. It never was in my fannish spaces.
Most of our members don’t want this.
Most of the examples of things that ought to be included are m/m. We are privileging m/m if we allow it, and AO3 already has a m/m-centric reputation that can feel exclusionary to some fans.
AO3 is a young, shaky platform that can barely handle the load and content we already have. If we open to original work, we’ll be opening the floodgates. The volume of posting will be so high, it will drown out the fic we’re actually here to protect.
Protecting stuff that doesn’t need protection because it’s not an IP issue would dilute OTW’s mission.
If we allow it, idiots will try to turn AO3 into advertising space, posting only the first chapter and a link to where you can pay to read the rest.
If we add another category of text before we add fan art, that’s a slap in the face of the fan artists we are already failing.
These arguments all make perfect sense in context.
Obvously, the issue with the first two is that different fannish communities have different norms. I knew that a very large community disagreed with the then current AO3 policy, but since so few of them were around to comment, it seemed like a tiny fringe minority.
The m/m thing is… complex. M/M content with zero IP issues is at risk. It is always at risk in a way that even f/f is not (though f/f is also always at risk). Asking for m/m to be exactly equivalent to f/f or m/f in numbers, tropes, whatever is ignoring the historical realities. In our current moment of queer activism in the West, we treat all types of queerness as part of one community with one set of goals, but once you get to culture and art or even more specific activism, this forced homogenization is neither useful nor healthy.
OTOH, AO3 really did have PR problems related to the perception that we gave m/m fandom the kid glove treatment. That objection wasn’t coming from nowhere.
AO3 was shaky. It was tiny when I first brought up this argument. Hell, it wasn’t even in closed beta the first time we discussed this. Part of what made the quiet rules change possible was AO3 organically getting much bigger and OTW having to buy many more servers for unrelated reasons.
The “floodgates” thing was put to rest by tacitly allowing original work before the rules change. We had a period to study how fans actually behaved, and as I predicted, only a small amount of original work got posted. It was indeed mostly things like original BL-ish stories or original work that had been part of a mixed original/fic fest, exchange, zine, etc. Currently, the “Original Work” fandom on AO3 only has 76,348 works. That’s pretty big compared to individual fandoms but tiny compared to AO3’s current size.
The commercial argument was spurious because commercial spam had been against the rules from the very beginning. OH THE IRONY that nowadays AO3 has all these idiots trying to post the first chapter of their fanfic and then direct you to where you can buy the rest.
AO3 has plenty of fanfic of public domain works. One of the problems with gatekeeping original work is that any way you try to distinguish it (not based on a specific canon, not an IP issue, etc.) will apply to some set of obviously allowable fandoms.
As for fan art… OTW has failed fan artists. They needed protection as much as or even more than fic writers. Just look at Tumblr! If we had succeeded at making DeviantArt but allowing boners, fan art fandom could have been safe all these years. Or when Tumblr inevitably shat the bed, we could have scooped up all those people instead of them scattering to twitter and god knows where.
OTW has failed vidders too, at least in terms of preservation. I know I’m not the only one who thinks this. Other major people from like the first Board and shit have discussed this with me offline. Doing some kind of vidding project, possibly outside of OTW is on a lot of our to-do lists. But at least one of OTW’s biggest victories has been that copyright exemption. OTW has demonstrably done really positive things for vidders that other organizations and sites have not. As a vidder, I never expected to see good hosting for the actual video files, and I’m quite content.
But fan artists… yeah. That argument makes sense at least from a place of frustration.
BTW, for the love of god, if you’re a n00b to OTW stuff, please do not reblog this post excitedly telling me that hosting fan art is on OTW’s road map, so yay, good news. Someone always does that, and it’s so irritating. I haven’t been involved in OTW in years, but I used to be, and I know what is on the roadmap. The couple of you who do heavy lifting on sysadmin and coding and policy things are welcome to weigh in as usual. I know none of us like that we can’t host fan art. It’s not what we intended.
Nonetheless, I found this argument to be the perfect being the enemy of the good. If we can save more text now without losing much of anything, we should do it. The fact that we’re fucking up on the fan art front is not a reason to spread the misery around.
V. Is “Original” the Opposite of “Fanfic”?
Okay, so that tl;dr above is why “BNFs” were on one side and “nobodies” were on the other. BNFs from one cultural background founded OTW. BNFs from the other cultural background weren’t even aware that the debate was going on.
But what was the underlying philosophical problem in even having the conversation?
It took me a long time, but I finally worked it out: We had two completely different ways of categorizing writing, and they were so baked into how we phrased questions that everything ended up being unanswerable to the other side. Here is what I came up with:
Schema 1
Fanfic - based on someone else’s IP
Original Work - the opposite
Schema 2
Non-Fannish Work - School essays, stories you are writing to try to sell to a mainstream publisher
Fannish Work Type 1 - based on other people’s characters directly (i.e. fanfic) Type 2 - based on tropes or whatever (“original slash” and the like)
Now, in the current moment when half of Tumblr just got into Chinese webnovels and the m/m ebook industry is thriving in English, original, tropey, BL-ish work is no longer different from “things I am trying to sell”. But this is how the divide was circa 2005 on fannish websites, and it’s the divide that was driving this internal OTW debate.
VI. Let’s Summarize the Camps One More Time
So, again, the debate makes perfect sense if you understand who was involved.
On the mainstream “But that’s not fanfic? I’m confused?” side:
Big US TV fandoms in English
Fandom historians of K/S–>buddy cop slash–>SGA, etc.
Americans
On the other side:
Anime fandom
“Original slash” fandom that had already been chased off of everywhere
People upset that AO3 wasn’t farther on translating the interface and supporting non-English language fandom.
People upset about US-centrism in fandom
Yes, I am very white, very American, and by now very into old buddy cop shows, but this was basically how the breakdown worked. It meant that something that looked like a minor quibble to one side was really, really not.

BTTF Headcanons
As suggested by the wonderful @tsukinikawatteus, I’ve put together some of my headcanons. Honestly, these are going to revolve solely around Doc & Marty, because I don’t really have any developed ones involving other characters.
I’ll hide it under a ‘read more ’ in case it gets too long and ramble-y. Which it will, because this is me we’re talking about.
First, I’ll answer the ones I got in the ask.
- How Doc & Marty met: For this one, I just go by the official Bob Gale answer that Marty was 13 or 14, had heard rumors about the crazy old scientist in town, & snuck into Doc’s lab one day & got caught. The comic series actually shows this event happening, but I tend to dismiss that version because honestly, I don’t like the way it’s handled. (Plus Bob Gale has said that the comics/game/etc can be take it or leave it as considered canon, so yay) Anyway, I imagine a young Marty hearing all these whispers around town about Doc and being curious. Maybe he was looking for danger/adventure in going to investigate, but I also like to think that part of Marty felt sorry for this guy who everyone seemed to look down on. So he made his way over to Doc’s lab to see what the deal was & was initially scared when he got caught. But he saw all the cool experiments and the general chaos & was totally into it.  (And btw, in my headcanon, Marty is the one who first refers to him as Doc & establishes it as his “name,” unlike the comic version where Doc tells Marty to call him that?? Def didn’t like that part.)
- When they started to consider each other best friends/what impact did they have on each other’s life: I’d say they considered the other a best friend pretty quickly. Doc was absolutely thrilled to discover that this kid thought he was awesome & was so interested in his work. After spending so much of his life without true connections or relationships, having Marty around really changed Doc’s life. He finally had someone (aside from Einstein) to talk to about all of his experiments and the science behind them.
The same goes for Marty considering Doc a best friend. Seeing as he was growing up in such a dysfunctional environment, with parents who probably weren’t super attentive or close to him, he loved being around Doc. Not only was he treated as an equal, he also had someone to listen to him, which he didn’t get at home. He found encouragement and felt respected around Doc. Plus, my general headcanon is that Marty really doesn’t have other friends & was always kind of an outsider.
Now onto some of my other headcanons....
- As I mentioned above, I don’t see Marty as a guy with many friends. He’s friendly towards a lot of people, but doesn’t have a specific group he belongs to. He really only interacts with his band mates while he’s at practice & it’s more of a business situation than a friendship. Marty gets to practice, runs the show (playing sick guitar riffs) & then just leaves. His band mates serve as a convenient cover story for when he wants to go somewhere with Jennifer, but that’s pretty much it. He has three friends, ok? And one of them is an animal.
- Upon finally settling into the improved ‘85 timeline, once all the time-traveling was over, things were understandably very jarring to Marty. One of the things he found hardest to adjust to was the sudden affection from his parents, namely the good morning hugs & kisses like we see Lorraine give him at the end of the first movie. Marty was previously used to spending the mornings in solitude since his father would already be at work & his mom would sleep in (often because she was still out of it from drinking the night before). The idea of family breakfasts & being greeted so warmly when he woke up, and when he got home from school, was super weird to him at first.
- Marty has ADHD. (this seems to be a very common headcanon, lol). Doc, being the kind of guy who’s interested in a wide variety of topics, came across some research & information on it at some point & instantly recognized the signs in his friend. When Marty came over one day, frustrated after a particularly rough day at school, he sat him down & talked to him about his suspicions. And since Doc was well aware of the lack of potential support (because this is the 80s after all, & SO many people with ADHD just didn’t have resources to get help), he took on the role of giving Marty advice and tips on how he could cope with it.
- Related to above point: Marty found that wearing layers helped keep him calm/feel grounded, hence why our boy rocks the t-shirt/button up/jean jacket/puffy vest look. And honestly, the suspenders might play a role in that too, since they put subtle pressure on part of the chest/shoulders/back. This also explains the leather jacket from part II! Aside from just thinking it looked awesome (and perfectly inconspicuous), Marty liked that it was a thick, weighted material.
-Doc is autistic. As he was diving into the world of research concerning ADHD & other various conditions, he came across a series of studies on Asperger’s syndrome & instantly connected the information with his own childhood and current life. Since he grew up feeling isolated from his peers & like nobody understood him, reading through the studies made him feel like he had found an answer. (A fact nobody asked for: the first study printed in English on Asperger’s syndrome was released in 1981. Yes, I checked to make sure this headcanon would be possible.)
-Doc set up a bed for Marty in the garage partially for the nights they were working late & his friend was too tired to head home, but also because he realized that a lot of the time, Marty simply didn’t want to be at home. Marty got into the habit of sleeping in his clothes so that at any given moment he could head over to Doc’s garage if he needed to. Doc made it clear to him that he was welcome anytime & doesn’t bat an eye when the boy wanders in at night & flops down into the bed.
-For Doc’s birthday, Marty went out & bought him the most colorful, “loudest” Hawaiian shirt he could find. It was sort of a joke, but Doc absolutely loved it.
-On Marty’s birthday, Doc asked him to come over under the guise of needing help with an experiment, but it was really a mini party with the lab decorated with streamers & balloons & cupcakes Doc had gone to pick up. Einstein wore a party hat.
- We all know Doc & Marty eat a lot of Burger King. When they eat it in Doc’s garage, Marty takes pieces of the fries and slips them under the table to Einstein. Doc does not appreciate Marty encouraging Einstein’s begging but the boy can’t resist sharing with the dog.
- Occasionally, when they’re taking a break from working or are just hanging out, Marty takes out his guitar & Doc takes out his saxophone & they jam. Sometimes they play actual songs & other times they create their own. Whenever they try to make up lyrics, it quickly devolves into complete nonsense, usually ending up with the two of them laughing so hard that they can’t even play anymore.
-Marty also sometimes puts on a Huey Lewis tape while the two of them are working. Doc initially wasn’t really into the music, but he eventually found himself singing along to the songs with Marty.
Okay, I need to stop myself because. Wow. If anyone actually reads this thing, I commend you on the effort. Kai, you had no idea what you were unleashing when you sent me that ask the other day.

Context? Pfft. I am above such a trivial thing.
Okay, I lied.
This is part of a series of chibi-style Soul Edge comics from way back when (1996?). I think they were printed in the Official Fanbook. Link to image source is at the bottom, or you can find them by searching “コミックソウルエッジ“. Shown above is Taki reenacting the Momotaro story with Mitsurugi as the dog, Li Long as the monkey, and Sophitia, who should’ve been the pheasant but I guess she didn’t get the memo.
Best I can make out in the third panel, Mitsurugi is saying “No, Sophitia. Not a chicken. It’s a pheasant. Pheasant.” (Not sure about Li Long’s line there, BTW.) I’m still not sure if the joke here is that chickens are just easier to draw or Sophitia was like “What even is a pheasant?”
No joke: the rich text editor ate most of the description while I was typing it on my phone, so I redid it on my computer from memory. It might have been funny to leave the image with just my first line of commentary for a while longer.

The Summer of Online Anime Cons - Review!
Tumblr media
By: Peggy Sue Wood | @peggyseditorial
OKAY. This review has been way overdue, but in my defense, I wanted to wait until Summer was officially over, and for me, that meant the Crunchyroll Expo needed to happen before making this post. So let's get into it:
This summer, in addition to the Big Three Anime Weekend (where people could attend Anime Expo Lite, Funimation Con 2020, and Aniplex Online Fest all at once), we also had Comic-Con, the Virtual Crunchyroll Expo, and several other small conferences happening online like the Toonami special.
The events I "attended" happened to all be free (woohoo!), and to be perfectly honest: I LOVED it. I hope that they have more virtual conventions like these in the future.  It's not because I don't love in-person and live conventions. I mean, anyone that knows me personally knows that I love conventions, traveling, dressing up, and more. I am a massive nerd for literary/professional/writing conferences and actively seek them out to attend throughout the year (if not present at them). I love anime conventions just as much and see them as a way to geek out with people from all over the world who share the same interests I do (and often know the niche anime/manga/webcomic/etc. that so few of my regular friends know about or have any interest in seeing!).
However, I think that Anime Expo has seriously fallen apart in recent years. It's something I've been more than vocal about in the past, like last year. Last year, as much as I did have fun, the convention space was overly crowded. AX is one of the largest anime conventions in the US, and overcrowding isn't unexpected given the size of it; however, since 2017, the convention has gone from simply full/crowded to claustrophobia-inducing. Enough so that someone like me, who had never felt claustrophobia before in their life, became overwhelmed and physically ill due to the number of people touching me on all sides as we attempted to shimmy down packed hallways. As a reference, I usually love enclosed and or crowded spaces--like, my mom and I frequented packed swap-meets as a child that I loved navigating. I also grew up with six older siblings, in a home next to Disneyland... so, like, crowds are not an issue for me, which is why I never expected to feel the level of anxiety I did in that horrible 2017 crowd, which repeated in AX 2019.
Add on to that panel experience: whereas before people could and would regularly slip in and out of panels with lines sometimes being outside the door for smaller rooms with more popular content, now the lines for most programs are often placed outside, in the heat, with attendees asked to line up sometimes hours in advance to have even a chance of attending. To my knowledge, Sakura-Con and several other conventions I've gone to in the last few years don't have that problem, and it's a fair guess as to why but let's leave that topic for another day.
By comparison, the virtual convention was a breeze! Yes, sometimes I had to sacrifice going to one panel over another, but who hasn't had to do that at conventions before? Ultimately, I could enjoy the panels from the comfort of my own home in PJs. I didn't need to worry about food, overheating in the sun, or finding the bathroom while at my house. I didn't get to meet new people (😥), but I did get to "attend" with friends of mine that can't go to conventions regularly for health reasons.
My major criticism of the virtual conventions can be summed up pretty easily. One issue I found was that the scheduling of three digital-conventions in one weekend was far too tight, but that was quickly mediated by the Funimation and Aniplex groups banding-together and merging the events so that Day 2 of FC2020 was a split with AOF2020. Another criticism I had is the lack of shopping--but I'm sure my wallet and bank account were relieved to find that I was much too entranced in panels to care about putting my cards through a ringer. I thought I would be upset by panel cancellations, but since virtual conventions are new and since panel cancellations happen at live conventions too, I can't say I'm all that upset by them. Not to mention how easy it was to handle such cancellations online when you have many more panels to attend freely.
Tumblr media
What was probably most upsetting was, at times, the layout. Of all the conventions, I think AX and Comic-Con did the best job with panel layout. AX used Twitch live streams, YouTube, and a handful of unique call-in panels that were easy to navigate. More frustrating was the ever-changing schedule times at AX, but that happens (mainly when you are one of the first conferences navigating the online-field and thereby making all the first mistakes). Ultimately, it was EASY to get to the right "room" for the right panel. It helped too that their schedule was frequently updated, so it was rarely a question of "which room?" and "when does this thing start?" Comic-Con, which featured all their panels on pre-scheduled youtube posts, was similarly easy to navigate and enjoy. Frankly, I preferred the use of YouTube as Comic Con's primary platform for distribution more, but that's just because I enjoy being able to go back and rewatch things later.
Funimation and Aniplex suffered a bit by not updating their schedules consistently. For example, Funimation kept listing panels for Day 2 in the room merged with the Aniplex Online Fest live-stream, leaving me (and I'm sure a few others) to wonder what in the world happened to all those disappearing panels. Though, I'm sad to say that Crunchyroll Expo had it way worse. Their different "rooms" attempted to allow for many panels and multiple languages, and it suffered due to the way they handled this, among other complications. The way things were labeled for different languages meant you either had to search through the individual tabs to make sure you wouldn't miss anything, or sift through all of it at once. There was no in-between. You also wouldn't know which panel was whereafter it aired, meaning things got lost easily. Sometimes I wouldn't even know what panel was canceled, rescheduled, or entirely overlooked by me! This issue is difficult for me to find acceptable, as the Crunchyroll Expo happened months after other conventions and had arguably more time to review platform options and layouts for their digital conference. It almost felt like they were aiming for a "different just to be different" feel ultimately at the cost of user experience, which is crazy since Crunchyroll is one of the largest online anime streaming platforms in the US abroad. It would have been better for them to publish their pre-recorded panels similar to episodes of a show that people could scroll through than the disorganized mess that their expo "stages" tried to do.
With that said, let’s focus on content.
Panels were the main focus of these conventions (obviously), and content-wise, they did NOT disappoint. AX hit HUGE on the industry panels from major licensing and publishing companies in the US and Japan. They also had the most in terms of interesting focuses. There was a healthy mix of fan panels, culture panels, industry panels, and such, meaning someone could find something of interest in nearly every hour. In fact, at the time, Casea (@madamekrow) and I were in a real panic about how to watch everything we wanted to watch. You could tell that a lot of thought had gone into making this thing work given how quickly they had to switch from live to digital, and I appreciate that. FC2020 and AOF2020, by comparison, were not as reliable in terms of those profession-based and fan-based panels, and given that they are mainly licensers of anime rather than convention planners, it makes sense. They were also up against a convention with a long history (BTW, AX celebrates 30 years in 2021). That's not to say they didn't come to the table without the cards.
FC2020 brought it home with premiere screenings of animes to come. My favorite of their premiere list is By The Grace of The gods, set to come out in October of 2020. Meanwhile, AOF2020 lacked premieres, professional and fan-based panels but made up for it with entertainment of a different kind. They hosted all-night marathons of popular works they license, held a digital concert, and unintentionally perhaps, generally gave a place to "chill" between the stressful jumping from panel to panel. In conclusion of the Big Three Weekend, they gave the summer a phenomenal start!
Next up is Comic-Con. In my opinion, their panels were heavily movie-based as opposed to print-media comics, manga, or anime. Yes, of course, there were plenty of comic panels too, but they weren't the same as what we saw during AX, FC2020, or AOF2020. The feel was different--maybe because of content. Regardless, it was interesting. I enjoyed much of the industry-related panels, like "Manga Publishing Industry Roundtable" and "How to Thrive as an Indie Comics Creator Now!" (I mentioned before I'm a publishing nerd, right?) Perhaps most preferable to me is that the Comic-Con panels are still available on their YouTube channel, which means that unlike many other conventions, I can share the panels with friends interested in a particular series, subject, or person. I LOVE that. Share-ability is huge, and I think Comic-Con was smart to make their content available moving forward. It has certainly been great for my film-loving friends and our team members here at The Anime View (like Jenna @jkmorgan-media).
Lastly, Crunchyroll Expo. What can I say about this one? The panels were huge variables. I know that everyone on our team found them to be a mixed bag, myself included, as Crunchyroll opened up to fans hosting panels. This was great, in my opinion, but with that comes a bit of criticism. Some fan panels were polished, exciting, and engaging. I loved many of the mecha panels. I also loved some that were engaging discussions of a topic between people that were close friends. HOWEVER, with that came just as many who were new to public speaking, hadn't prepared much of anything and just recorded an awkward Zoom call, or worse (it's hard to describe how).
As for the smaller conferences like the mini-Toonami Con during Adult Swim’s digital conference, I don’t really have anythings specific to say so I’ll be leaving them out of this review.
I don't want to shoot down any of the fans that hosted panels despite this negative review. It's HARD to present at conferences, and for some, it's even harder when they know they are being recorded. I remember my first conference where I stared at my paper the whole time and had to be asked to raise my voice twice for people to hear, while my friend aimed my phone at me to record the mortifying presentation for my mother. I don't blame the people that had a hard time doing this, and I fully support Crunchyroll for giving fans, particularly young ones, the platform and experience to do this. Some of those panels were very interesting, despite the presenter's awkwardness. Controversially, the handful that made no effort (and you could tell which), I don't extend that empathy.
For me, panels quality has nothing to do with camera work, lighting, or even sound in some cases (for the most part, as long as you can hear the words--awesome). I didn't need to see spot-on PowerPoint slides, anime clips to fit the conversation or hyperactivity. To me, it was all about what was being said or not said. One panel that comes to mind that I aimed to attend was about picking the right anime for you or a friend. I ended up ditching half-way through. It was, sorry to say, terrible. The hosts definitely had the energy and passion to discuss anime and interesting subjects beyond their approach to the idea of recommendations.
For example, they spent a reasonable amount of time comparing how they grew up experiencing anime to how many people now entering the fandom have come to know it. They started by describing how they watching anime on a handful of VHS rentals from BlockBusters, while many people in my (Peggy's) "anime generation" grew up in the age of fansubs and illegal uploads; meanwhile, my (Peggy's again) niece grew up experiencing all of her anime through legal online licensing services like Netflix, Funimation, Crunchyroll, etc. After discussing that difference, they mentioned briefly (as in one time in a single sentence) that the popularity of a particular genre in anime when you entered may affect what you find most interesting before completely undercutting themselves to say that you can't recommend anything to anyone because people always think about what they like first. (I hate to break it to them, but I find it pretty easy to recommend things based on my friends' stated interests in past series. Maybe that's because I watch almost everything of every genre in anime, but also--it's not rocket science. If your friend likes thrilling action movies, you can probably name a few thrilling action animes to satisfy their interest.) It felt as though the panel's title was misleading when the answer to recommending anime is "you can't." (when, in fact, you can with little to no complications!)
Overall, for me, AX takes the crown in terms of content. They had a fantastic mix of everything you hope to see at a comic convention in addition to making it fun. Comic-Con takes the crown for best platform use and layout (AX takes a close second and Aniplex/Funimation sharing third)... Crunchyroll doesn't rank in this category. Aniplex/Funimation shares the title of Best Entertainment. Crunchyroll takes the crown for fan inclusion into the presentation spotlight. They're all winners, but if I really had to rank them, it'd be this:
Anime Expo - Title: Content is King  👑
Comic-Con - Best Platform/Layout
Aniplex/Funimation (Sharing is caring) - Best Entertainment
Crunchyroll - Best Fan Inclusion
With that, I conclude my long drafted review. Thank you for your patience, and I'll see you all next week in another post!

You: Nvrmind
Stranger: I get the idea, yeah
Stranger: they brag
You: My sister doesn't brag, she just sucks on her boyfriends face
Stranger: it's gonna come off some day if she's not careful...
You: And when she's not found doing that, she'll be found in the kitchen talking as loud as she can
You: Hopefully
You: Maybe then I won't have to see that moron
Stranger: XD
Stranger: or maybe you'll just have a guy without a face hanging around
Stranger: which would be... worse...?
You: Well, if he didn't have a face, I wouldn't be able to hear him speak
You: BUT, if he wasn't around, then I wouldn't have to see the sorry excuse of dick always lounging around our house
You: Tbh, idk what would be better. It would be absolute torture for him to not talk about himself all day
Stranger: oh no

Stranger: SHE'S FUCKIN' THE NEIGHBOR BOY?!
Stranger: oh good god...
You: Yeah, I know right?
You: Fun fact: He graduated last year and always hangs around our housse
You: how he didn't know how to season chicken is a crime
Stranger: you... you put seasoning... on chicken...
Stranger: there's... nothing... to... figure... outt...
You: Especially since his father is the professional grill artist of this side of the culdesac
Stranger: WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
You: He covers them completely
You: Like actually douses them in spices and throws em in a pan
Stranger: ...

Stranger: I ACTUALLY laughed out loud when I read that XD
You: It has full coverage from folding laundry, cleaning a house-and this rate
You: Changikng Diapers
Stranger: (congrats on writing a book, btw)
Stranger: (that's not easy, even if it's just a gag gif for your sister's idiot bf)
You: Aww, thanks
You: I think it ended up being about thirty thousand words.
You: He'll still be reading it around next Christmas
Stranger: well, at least he can read...
Stranger: ...that's a start...
You: That itself is a big accomplishment, so I have to give him that.
Stranger: XD
Stranger: Do you write a lot?
You: yeah
You: I love writing
Stranger: GOOD.
Stranger: What kind of stuff do you write?
You: I like writing fantasy, fiction, non-fiction
You: Anything, I just love writing
You: I also right stupid do-it-yourself books for people with an IQ lower than a duckling
Stranger: I dunno
Stranger: I've met some pretty smart ducks...
You: I have not
Stranger: Do you like comics at all?
You: there's this one duck that the people own across the street. her name is Greta the Great (idk why that name), she likes to climb onto cars somehow and sits on them. She does not move and when you try to move her physically, she go all murder duck on you
You: yeah
Stranger: (I promise these questions are going somewhere)
You: I am literally reading ms marvel comics right now
Stranger: YESS
Stranger: I MET G. WILLOW WILSON ONCE

You: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You: nope to that shit
Stranger: I am a big fancy california person who also has enough industry ties that he can get in on a free professional guest pass XD
You: HOW
You: I MUST KNOW KIND SIR
Stranger: My dad worked on some of the official Marvel character encyclopedias
You: LUCKY
Stranger: YUSS :3
You: Do you know which ones>
You: ?
Stranger: those big leather-bound ones they used to have in Barnes & Noble...
Stranger: "Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe"
You: DE FANCY ONES
You: That's cool. Those are normally the types of books I just read in store
Stranger: yeah, cause they're $75
You: Yup
You: I almost bought one once, but if I bought it, I wouldn't have been able to go to camp
You: So I put it off
You: It was only because it was marked down for like 54.99
Stranger: you can get them for, like, $25 now
You: Really? I haven't been to a Barnes and Noble for like three months
Stranger: I mean... if you were to send me the money, my dad would PROBABLY sign one for you XD
You: That would be cool...
You: Although it wouldn't be wise to send money to a stranger across the internet
Stranger: yeah, I was gonna say...
Stranger: might be kind of hard to explain...
You: and I don't make enough in a day babysitting the snotty nosed demon down the street
Stranger: "HEY DAD, I NEED YOU TO DO A FAVOR FOR THIS TEENAGE GIRL I MET ON THE INTERNET"
You: I can see why he might be concerned
Stranger: yeah, lol
Stranger: anyway
Stranger: LOOOONG roundabout point I was trying to get to
Stranger: there's a new comic publisher called "AHOY Comics"
Stranger: that prints short prose stories in the back of each issue
Stranger: and anyone can submit one
Stranger: and it pays
Stranger: so if you can do a quirky horror/fantasy story in about 1,000 words
Stranger: it might be worth looking into
You: You don't have to draw?
You: Or anything like that?
Stranger: no, it's a prose story
You: Oh, duh
Stranger: you should probably check out one of their issues first, if you get the chance
You: That sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out
Stranger: They already bought two stories from me :)
You: awesome
You: So is that how people get like "discovered"?
Stranger: I hope so! XD
Stranger: Mine haven't actually been published yet
Stranger: so I don't know how it works after that
You: So do they publish them after they buy them? Just raw, like after no tweaking or changes? Or do you have to do rough drafts upon rough drafts before they release it?
You: Or would you know?
Stranger: they tweak a little
You: I can actually understand why. I mean publishing something that's probably never reached professional editing doesn't really sound like a wise idea to me.
Stranger: the biggest change they made to mine was just shortening it
Stranger: 600 words is the optimum length, even though they accept up to 1,000
You: That is actually a genius program. I wonder how many creators they have?
Stranger: a lot...
Stranger: have you looked them up
You: Yeah, I've been scrolling through their website.
You: Most of their comics look like something I'd read
Stranger: The prose story in the first issue they ever published was by Grant Morrison.
You: have you ever heard of line webtoon?
Stranger: And now they're publishing me.
Stranger: In the same space
Stranger: as Grant
Stranger: Fucking
Stranger: Morrison
Stranger: Yeah, I actually have a webcomic on Line Webtoon too...
You: He wrote that one comic about the asylum right?
You: Really?
You: Which one?
Stranger: ...TWO, actually...
Stranger: One's about a gay penguin, and the other's just stream-of-consciousness, usually R-rated doodles
You: Oh cool, so like the slice of life/ comedy?
You: Oh, have you read Backstory?
You: that's one of my favorites/
Stranger: I haven't, no
Stranger: what is it?
You: One of the creators is Stan Lee
You: May he rest in peace.
Stranger: *crosses heart*
You: not, back story
You: Backchannel
You: Sorry
You: On the surface, Tom Tanner is having an average high school life - struggling to stay on the lacrosse team, hiding his affections for his friend Sally, and trying to keep his head down and grades up. What his father, an LA police detective, and friends don’t know is that Tom is an engineering prodigy and is being recruited by BACKCHANNEL, a decentralized hactivist group causing havoc at prisons across the U.S.
You: There's the description that was on the webtoons page
Stranger: ooohh...
Stranger: Here's mine, if you're interested...
Stranger: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/i-think-im-a-penguin/list?title_no=194476
Stranger: (I really need to update this thing again...)
You: OKKKKKKKKKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
You: Ima be right back
You: Thud downstairs
You: fam might be home
You: ima fetch a vacuum hose
You: brb
Stranger: vacuum hose...?
Stranger: Also where were they?
You: OH MY LORD AND SAVIOR
You: My sister, her boyfriend, and parents are with my cousin who was pregnant and having difficulty delivering, they were staying until friday
You: One went with while the other is at his dorm in Iowa City
You: And that leaves the little shi-thead, Ethan
You: He was supposed to be at a sleepover.
You: He comes home at almost four in the morning when it is -50 degrees outside and covered head to foot in snow. Banging on the front door, because he forgot to grab his stupid fourth controler for playstation.
Stranger: -_-
You: He left with a muffin
Stranger: ....
Stranger: ...
Stranger: ..
Stranger: .
You: He also left with the little warm air left in this house too
Stranger: ...
You: So there's that.
You: HEY!
You: WHAT IF THOSE THUMPS WERE HIM AND HIS TWAT FRIENDS
You: THE ONES I WAS HEARING EARLIER
Stranger: I was about to ask about that, lol
You: Okay, I'm technically not home alone. I've got ninja. Our small bean of a cat who believes she is a lion.
You: She likes to attack strangers
You: Maybe I should have sicced him on the little shit
Stranger: I approve of everything about your cat
You: Thanks
You: She is sitting with me, growling at the window
You: I am now annoyed knowing that my brother and his friends have nothing better to do than sit outside in -50 and stare at me through the window.
You: I hope their parents are proud
Stranger: I mean... your brother's parents are also your parents, so...
You: Yeah, they are real proud of his accomplishments in life
You: *sarcasm
Stranger: WAS IT REALLY HIM?!
You: Thumping on the window?
You: Walls and such?
You: I have no idea
You: And I don't think he'll come near me for a few days until he knows I won't rip out his intestines
Stranger: you should do it anyway
Stranger: just to show him
You: I just know, I saw four figures waddle back down the street
You: Little shits
You: Ima tell their mommas
Stranger: ALL FOUR OF THEM CAME?!
You: They'll whoop their ass
You: They didn't come in
Stranger: Just... just stay and play video games at your house!
You: (thankfully)
Stranger: They already made the damn trek!
You: I can't
Stranger: god dammit
You: Oh.
You: they are petty and have nothing to do with their lives
You: I'll gove them this pleasure
You: give*
You: Besides
You: that is waaaaay too much testosterone for this house. Plus, I don't have a door on my room and I won't get any sleep at all, let alone with like the two and a half hours I have to do so.
Stranger: ...do I need to let you sleep?
You: Nah, who needs sleep when you have a blanket fort and enough coffee for four thousand vikings
Stranger: And idiot siblings who would've woken you up anyway!
You: Exactly
You: The only reason i'm up this early, is because I never get me time.
You: This is my time to shine baby
Stranger: SAME
You: I'm listening to thirteen reason why, eating waffle crunch, sipping on mostly sugar induced coffee, and on omegle. making friends and bonding over comics and douch brothers and boyfriends
You: Besides, my parents aren't here. I could be like a normal teenage girl and throw a party
You: but why would I do that when I could invite the best person on planet earth.
You: ME AND ONLY ME
You: It is a strictly me party.
You: That's probably why his friends didn't come in...
You: I am tying all sorts of strings together tonight
Stranger: not everyone's a party person
You: I LOOK LIKE A FREKIN MARSHMALLOW MAN RN
Stranger: embrace it
Stranger: BE the marshmallow
You: I have on: tights, spandex, leggings, yoga pants, and sweatpants. two long sleeve shirts and a sweatshirt, four pairs of socks and a beanie
You: Oh, and leg warmers I found under my bed a few weeks ago
You: I also have the heater shooting lava temp air into my pillow/blanket fort
Stranger: Perfect.
You: Ikr?
You: At least I won't freeze to death, even if the power goes out
Stranger: haha, that's good
Stranger: freezing to death should be avoided
Stranger: (I REALLY feel the thing about needing to stay up late to get "me time," btw)
Stranger: (It's 2:17 AM here)
You: Ah, 4;17
You: lol, most the time, this neighbor girl named abi?
You: She comes over and pretends she's part of the family because shes a lonely only child
You: Gotta love her though
Stranger: Not as bad as your brothers or sister's bf?
You: Nah.
You: I can tell her to leave me alone and she listens
You: That's the difference
Stranger: KEEP HER
You: IKR! XD
You: You know that stupid NUN movie?
You: The horror?
Stranger: I know of it, I haven't seen it.
You: Neither have I nor will I ever...
You: An ad just played for it and I think i just had a mini chest pain there at the end
Stranger: I haven't seen the ad, I don't think...
You: At least the devils hour is over. I don't have to worry about stuff like that
You: I've only seen it once before, although it was months ago. I don't know why it'd be playing now.
You: brb
You: THEY CAME BACK FOR THE MUFFINS!
Stranger: MOTHERFUCKERS
You: GOD DANG IT, THEY'RE ALL GONE
You: Oh wait
You: They left a single chocolate chip in the bottom
You: at least they have common decency
Stranger: i suppose it's better than nothing
Stranger: ...but not by much...
You: Yeah...
You: There is literally nothing sweet in this house.
You: i could make something, but I don't want to leave my fort
Stranger: WHY ARE THEY VENTURING OUT INTO FREEZING SNOW
Stranger: FOR MUFFINS?!?!?!?!
You: Who knows
You: HEY, THEY ORDERED PIZZA
You: WHY DON'T THEY EAT THEIR OWN FOOD
Stranger: tell their parents
You: oh they most definitely will hear of this
Stranger: tell their parents that their children are out wandering the streets at 4 AM in the middle of a blizzard
You: Funny thing
You: My cousin?
You: The pregnant one that is giving birth three states away?
Stranger: yeah?
You: that's her mom
You: She's gone
Stranger: what?
You: Brother is staying at cousin's house down the street
Stranger: OH
You: I locked the door
Stranger: lol
You: they ain't getting my heater
You: if they come back, that's probs be what they go for.
Stranger: well, it kind of sounds like you need that to... you know... LIVE...
You: well, unless the furnace doesn't kicks off i'll be fine
You: besides i've got ninja
You: a very irritable portable heater
Stranger: *tapes cat to face*
Stranger: "I'm good!"
You: No...
You: .
You: .
You: .
You: kitt-ing
You: haha
Stranger: -_-
You: I have no friends
Stranger: I'm sorry
Stranger: I'm a 24 year old man who still lives with his parents, and spends his evenings socializing online with total strangers who--not always but USUALLY--turn out to be teenage girls.
Stranger: ...so you might still be ahead of the curve on this one...
You: I don't know about that one
Stranger: (nothing wrong with being a teenage girl, obviously)
Stranger: (just... maybe not the demographic I should be socializing with the most...?)
You: I'm a socially awkward fifteen year old gorl who has severe anxiety and when tries to speak to anyone that's not related to or known for at least five years, cannot speak to in person without screaming on the inside. If not found caressing my refrigerator or at the back of my public library, I will be found on youtube, tumblr, pinterest, or just staring outside at the field of cows across the street.
Stranger: (the person in my other Omegle window called me out on it and now I'm feeling self-conscious)
You: haha
Stranger: yeah, I have anxiety problems too
Stranger: and I'm starting to dip towards being more comfortable interacting with people online than I am in person
Stranger: which scares me a little
You: Oh, I'm homeschooled too, so... there goes anything that has to do with people
Stranger: cause, you know... real life... is... goof
Stranger: *good
Stranger: OH GOD
Stranger: Okay
Stranger: yeah
Stranger: I'm sorry
Stranger: homeschooling is bad
You: Not necessarily.
Stranger: I mean, it can be really hard on your social life
Stranger: (and yeah, the regular education system is pretty bad too, soo...)
You: I don't have to ding fucks that call themselves teenagers. I can stay at home in my jam-jams all day
You: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You: WHAT SOCIAL LIFE?
Stranger: ...
Stranger: I don't even know what advice to give you on that one...
Stranger: Most of my friends who need to get out more are, you know... adults... who can leave the house without needing permission and drive and shit.
You: Ok, I will admit. If I put my mind to it and really focus and stuff, I can form a coherent sentence without looking like a mentally sick and deranged horse.\
Stranger: And I do have SOME friends my own age. Lol.
Stranger: ...
You: I do have one friend.
Stranger: Is it Abi?
You: Nah, she's family
You: his names Levi
You: He is nine and his favorite animal is parrot
Stranger: ah
Stranger: is this the "demon you babysit" you mentioned earlier?
You: HOW DID YOU KNOW
Stranger: ...because you mentioned babysitting a demon earlier...?
You: That is some serious string tying, sir
Stranger: > person says they never interact with other people
Stranger: > person mentions one other person they interact with
Stranger: > person mentions interacting with someone recently
Stranger: QED: person they interacted with is probably one person they mentioned
Stranger: ...
Stranger: okay that actually made me more confused...
You: YOU'VE BEEN TALKING WITH ME FOR TOO LONG
You: YOU'RE DEVELOPING A TERRIBLE MEMORY
Stranger: ALSO IT'S ALMOST 3:00 IN THE MORNING HERE
Stranger: SO I MIGHT BE A LITTLE SPACY
You: that might be my excuse as well
You: I am dreading to admit I have a dentist appointment at 8:30
Stranger: FUCK
You: its five
You: fml
Stranger: ...
Stranger: I can't really judge anyone else's life choices
Stranger: especially when it comes to spending too much time on this site...
Stranger: ...but you should not have spent a couple hours talking to me
Stranger: :P
You: Nah, it's fine.
You: I should probably get a little sleep, though
Stranger: yeah...
You: so i don't fall asleep at the dentists office
Stranger: hope this bite-sized glimpse of socializing gave you what you needed...
You: Maybe
Stranger: ...i don't even know what I'm saying anymore I'm tired...
You: probably not
You: good night
Stranger: hang in there
You: actually, good morning
Stranger: it gets better
You: does it really?
Stranger: adult responsibilities really aren't that much harder than teenage responsibilities
Stranger: but you get the freedom of being an adult
You: adulting sounds pretty difficult
You: are you sure?
Stranger: to, like... leave the house whenever you want, and pick your own schedule and shit
Stranger: you've managed to keep yourself alive while your parents were out of town, yes?
You: .
You: .
You: .
You: barely
You: almost murdered four teenage boys, that's for sure
Stranger: it seems hard when you're not doing it
Stranger: then you just kinda... start doing it, without even realizing it
Stranger: adulting, I mean
Stranger: not murdering teenagers
You: I was gonna say...
You: I was so confused after that first statement
Stranger: lol
Stranger: okay, I'm out of wisdom
Stranger: go get some sleep
Stranger: and... try to... find friends? In the real world?
You: That was real encouraging
Stranger: sorry
You: Go and... find friends
You: Nah it's cool
Stranger: wherever you get your comics
Stranger: see if they hold D&D tournaments or something?
Stranger: or Magic?
You: okie dokie
Stranger: okay
Stranger: good night
You: night'
You have disconnected.

Just Another Late Night At The Game Center
And just another massive dose of game culture, as originally shared on the Attract Mode Twitter account, (most of) everything that was shared in the latter half of February. The first half was covered here.
Before I forget: the above is courtesy of erickimphotography.com.
Again, given how short Feb is supposed to be, I figured this post would be too... and it's not. So am wonder if going weekly might best going forward?
Anyhow, where did I leave off last time? Oh yeah; Valentine's Day. And here’s Amy Rose, from the day after, reminding us all that, as great as love can be, it also hurts (via sonicthehedgeblog)...

Check out this devastating big boot from Mario, one that would make the WWE's Undertaker or Kane proud (via suppermariobroth)...

You're no doubt familiar with Julie Bell's work, but are you aware of the close resemblance between her art & the artist herself? (via slbtumblng)...

My Friend has been Falsely Accused of Tracing So I Will Defend Him
Okay I accidentally deleted the blog I posted this one because I’m a dumbass, so I’ll just repost it here even though I don’t use this blog anymore, but apparently I still have followers. Bless caches because I was able to get this back from google caches so I don’t have to retype everything. I added further evidence and refutes to claims that were not in my original post btw.
Anyways, I am making this post to help out my good friend @5ru9 aka Falco who has been recently accused of tracing/copy pasting other people’s / official art!
I’ve known Falco for over 3 years, and we’ve grown as artists together. Once in a while we give each other advice on art (thanks for the mech and armor advice and teaching me how you line and color!), but most of the time we just meme each other.
Anyways, a lot of people have pointed out that they’ve seen him livestream before, and he’s already posted some of his block outs and other wips as proof that he does not trace in his post here:
http://5ru9.tumblr.com/post/168277137427/hello-i-have-been-informed-about-a-callout-post
To further prove his claim with solid evidence, I shall present to you!
Times he’s asked for advice on his art, or I randomly decided to mention things I notice in his WIPs!
Exhibit A-1:
Tumblr media
A Tenkai Knight he made up! I pointed out a few things I thought were awkward about the perspective in his WIP.
Exhibit A-2:
Tumblr media
He started working on this way back in July and didn’t finish it until much later because he was working on several other pieces at the same time. I suggested lowering the eyebrows and drawing the eyes a bit narrower to get more of the playful expression he was aiming for. In his final piece here, you can see that Falco continued to refine the piece.
By the way! The reason he sometimes posts a lot of detailed artworks one shortly after the other is because he sometimes works on multiple pieces at once! And then finishes coloring them around the same time.
Exhibit A-3
Tumblr media
Falco and I spent good time trying to figure out why he felt like something was wrong with his sketch! I thought maybe it was the trapezius and I decided to red line (or blue line i guess) it so it’d be easier for him to see approximately where i thought the line should go to fix it.
Exhibit A-4:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gif-ing process turned white bg into blue… anyways! Falco showed me an early version of his Tenkai Knights OC that he eventually used in an April Fool’s joke to pass off as a new character in the series. He mastered the tenkai style enough that at first glance, people really did believe it was official! Like you had to get a good look to realize Shiyu was not really a real new character! Btw I had to go into my old twitter acc to find this…. (Edit: the gif wasn’t working bc it was too big so i had to make it smaller… and choppier and stuff to fit the mb max)
Well now that brings us into!!!
Exhibit B
Some of his old art!! (I’m so sorry falco i’ll be exposing your ancient art to ppl now)
Tumblr media
Here you can see his progress from 2014 Tenkai fan art to early 2015! It starts looking more and more like the official art, which is what he was going for.
For reference, here’s what the character Ceylan Jones/Washizaki looks like:
Tumblr media
I blocked out fan art by everyone except falco (which i marked) that shows up in this google search. Everything else is official art. The two fan arts by falco you see here are more recent, the angel one being from 2016 and the chicken one from 2017 (i think he also made a version with sonic instead of the chicken? lol). They’re both on his dA accounts btw! The 2017 one really looks like official art, doesn’t it? But it’s his artwork! He practiced a LOT to reach that point, and I hope the earlier arts I showed above this one are enough to convince you in his art progression! Side note: i only used images w/ceylan because 1. i’m biased because ceylan is my favorite character and 2. he drew ceylan a lot because ceylan is his favorite character Also you can see his handle change from s3iwashi to burningbraven. 5ru9 is is a pretty recent handle.
ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN IN THE TENKAI FANDOM FOR A WHILE CAN VOUCH FOR HIM!!!!!
And now for the last one,
Exhibit C
Tumblr media
WHAT? WHO IS THIS???
This is my favorite character from a Chinese series called AOTU World! His name is Grey, or 格瑞。I commissioned Falco to draw Grey for me, and let me tell you it would be IMPOSSIBLE for him to have copied any of this. Why? Because the donghua is 3D and the manhua’s art is very inconsistent!
Let me show you the reference pictures I gave him to work with!
They’re all in my gdrive folder here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1CqwH5KS-pHX0ZqLHQpoIZBi6W-gsU_Tz
This is all official art from the manhua, except the 3D model is from the donghua. Look at how inconsistent the references are! There’s no way he could have copy and pasted or traced this! Grey doesn’t even do this particular pose anywhere. lol. I told Falco “give him a cool sword pose”. (I’m sorry for being so vague, Falco! But it turned out great!!) The style he ended up drawing in was a mixture of all of them.
Btw!! here’s the blockout and the sketch he sent me before I sent my payment for the commission!! You can see his construction in the block out!! The arm construction and leg construction is light, but it’s there. You can also see the block out below the sketch. Notice he actually fixed the leg length from block out -> sketch?
Tumblr media
ARGUMENTS AGAINST SPECIFIC ACCUSATIONS
Tumblr media
LOOK, thte actual drawing doesn’t even match the sprites that closely. Pay attention to the collar especially. The whole frankensteining the image and then painting over it thing is just way more effort than drawing it himself. They don’t even match that well in the overlays. Like wow it’s such a crime to try and stay on model.
Tumblr media
WHO WOULD EVEN NEED TO TRACE A MOUTH LIKE THAT? IT’S SO EASY TO DRAW. I CAN DRAW IT PERFECTLY JUST BY LOOKING AT IT. (well i AM an animator so I also do style mimicking)
Doesn’t the fact that you have to edit the sprites to match his artwork prove that you’re just a tryhard in making up fake evidence and not a tryhard enough at art since you think it’s so impossible for people to draw characters on model?
Tumblr media
Yes he referenced the broom and possibly the heels from this image, but your overlays for the leg and arms are disingenuous and you know it. The leg positions are different, and the overlay doesn’t even match up. Face tracing also makes no sense. You literally stretched the mouth to try and make it fit but it still doesn’t fit. Do you really think it’s that hard to draw mouths and eyes in the DR style? DR faces are really simple to emulate. Also you fool, if you follow Falco’s artwork enough, you’d realize the way he draws bodies is actually rather consistent even as he does different styles. Especially when it comes to hands. His way of drawing hands is how I recognize his art and know right away it’s his art and not official art or a trace (also his coloring style). The heels he drew are also reminiscient of how he typically draws shoes/feet. he draws them bulkier. The other art has dainty heels. At most he referenced how backside works because he’s used to drawing sneakers.
Also come on, if all you referenced from an image was a broom because you liked the style (his is also clearly drawn by himself since you can’t overlay it on the other one. like i said he mostly used the style as a reference for how-to-broom) and you referenced pieces from many other images, are you going to list every single thing you referenced? While yeah it’d be nice to, it’s a little ridiculous to expect all 5-20 references whenever they post the image. It’s a thing where, if someone asks, you’d tell them, but it’s too much to list all of it. This isn’t a 20 page thesis.
If it’s such a crime, then holy shit sue all those people who parody other people’s comics and sue everyone who dares!!! to ever draw something remotely similar to someone else. Dang.
Art doesn’t live in a vacuum.
Tumblr media
Okay, this one is just plain stupid. You distorted the sprite to match it up with his, but what would be the point for him to distort it just to trace? Also if he traced, can you explain the rest of the fingers that are drawn nicely but clearly different from the sprite? Also the thumbs don’t even match up. His faces more downward while the sprite is facing more forward. Also explain the turned body in Falco’s sketch, then!! And the hair! OH WAIT YOU CAN’T EXPLAIN IT BY ANY OTHER WAY THAN HE DREW IT HIMSELF!!! BECAUSE NO SPRITES MATCH IT AND YOU CAN’T FIND ANY SPRITES TO DISTORT ENOUGH TO EVEN GET CLOSE TO MAKING FAKE EVIDENCE FOR IT.
By the way, the style he drew it in is closer to the drv3 than this sprite. while it’s pretty much the same style as the older games, drv3′s art is more refined than the older games. Falco’s art is also more refined as you can see. (wow not only did falco’s art improved from back when we first met; even professional artists improve. shocker. /s)
Tumblr media
Dude what the hell? The overlays don’t even match up even ifi you tried to frankenstein them. And these are really common poses at really common angles, and once again, must every single thing we reference from be listed in the description of every place we post an image? Let me just list all 30 videos and 50 images i used as reference for one of my prints. jfc.
As for the saihara animation based on the digimon opening animation? It was pretty clear to everyone that it’s some kind of parody. Many people when making parody animations don’t mention the original video either?? It’s a fun thing for fans of the franchise to recognize the reference themselves. Yes he could have said it was the digimon opening on the description, but at least he didn’t say he thought of the idea himself? And if you talk to him about the animation, he will openly tell you it’s from digimon. And the fact that you think it’s a trace despite how much the overlays do NOT work out is practically proof that you’re just doing this maliciously and hoping that saying he traces enough with shoddy evidence will make people believe you.
ALSO PEOPLE LITERALLY TRACE ANIMATIONS TO MAKE PARODIES OF, DOWN THE STYLE WHERE ALL THEY CHANGE IS THE HAIR AND OUTFIT, AND YET SOMETHING WITH DIFFERENCES EVEN DOWN TO THE STYLE LIKE THIS IS SOMETHING YOU THINK IS A TRACE? Do you need a new pair of glasses?
Tumblr media
I was gonna ignore this one because it was the same as a lot of the others, but you literally erased Falco’s face line so it would match the sprite, and you covered the bigger boobs Falco gave her, and totally ignored that the angle doesn’t even match properly. Like you covered parts of his sketch in your overlay just to make it look more like it matches, but if you actually fucking overlayed it correctly, even with squashing it, it won’t fit. (Also sorry to point this out Falco, but the circles on your goggle lenses are too small compared to the sprite; Maybe if you actually traced like this person claims you’re doing, they’d be perfectly like the sprite. OH BUT WAIT YOU DREW IT YOURSELF SO OF COURSE THERE’S SOME DIFFERENCES. JUST LIKE HOW EVEN THOUGH ALL YOUR OTHER WORKS ARE REALLY CLOSE TO THE STYLE AND PRETTY MUCH ON MODEL, THEY’RE NOT EXACTLY THE SAME WITH THE SPRITES! SHOCKER...!)
Tumblr media
HOLY FUCK. I already pointed out and gave evidence that Falco started on the Nier Automata drawing waaaaaaay before he posted the actual picture. The 2 sketches are sketches! They don’t take a super long time. I busted out 10 inktobers in 1 day. (thumbnails of my artwork below)
Tumblr media
Look I even even lined and colored 5 fairly detailed chibis in 1 day (i did the sketches earlier though. btw i hand drew the plaid on ray. it was annoying)
Tumblr media
At the moment I have 5 wips. They’ll likely all be done around the same time. I know Falco often has multiple wips as well, and sometimes he also finishes some of them close to each other. Some artists (like my friend Fish) can pump out extremely detailed paintings in less than a day. WOW some artists can draw at a fairly fast rate. WHO KNEW? (manga artists in weekly magazines pump out 15-20 pages of manga in a week)
He’s still developing a style; he’s mostly doing style mimics of series he likes in the mean time.
At the moment he’s mostly experimenting with the drv3 style, but he was practicing p5 earlier. By the way, he DESIGNED a phantom outfit for mishima. Who the heck would he copy that from? He made it up because he loved mishima and wanted to make him part of the gang in some AU fan art. Mishima doesn’t have artwork like this for him to trace, so it should be obvious it’s his own work.
And the pokemon and crash bandicoot ones are actually not that close. The pokemon one looks like a good attempt at imitating the pokemon style, but since he hasn’t practiced it enough, you can tell it’s a little off model because, well, he drew it himself and doesn’t practice the pokemon style a lot. Same with the crash one. Had it been a trace, with his level of control over his lines (which you can’t refute), it would have been much closer.
And you act like it’s a crime to imitate others’ art style. It’s really not. What is wrong with you? Do you want to slow down animation production by only letting the character designer draw everything? Or do you want animation where the art has 0 semblance of consistency because all the artists draw in vastly different styles? lol. What do you have against artists that try to stay on model?
Tumblr media
LOL THIS IS ONE IS SO STUPID WHERE DO I EVEN START?
Oh, I KNOW. Why don’t I do that same pose with my own hands?
Tumblr media
IT’S A MIDDLE FINGER, YOU IDIOT.
Just because YOU don’t know basic anatomy and can’t tell a middle finger from a pinky, doesn’t mean everyone else is as incompetent as you. He wasn’t doing the rock-on hand pose (sry idk if that pose actually has a name lol), and he’s drawn the rock-on hand pose properly before.
Closing statement
I believe I covered a lot of things and provided a lot of evidence here that Falco and his other friends did not cover in his defense against the false accusations.
I even added more counter arguments in this repost because apparently my original post wasn’t enough to convince people.
Perhaps the person calling him out meant well (no, I doubt it because they made a new side blog just to diss him because they knew if they did it on their actual blog, they’d be called out for being a jerk), but they did not do enough digging to find out if their claims were true or not (and they probably know well enough that they MADE UP THEIR EVIDENCE).
If you’re going to make a call out post, please make triple sure sure of everything before you accuse people. Talk to them first. Talk to those who know them too.
Many jobs require you to be able to draw characters exactly in the style given. Animators for example! There are multiple animators working on one series, and they all need the skill to draw consistently! Some games also have teams that need to be able to draw in the same style so they don’t have to leave everything up to one person. Comic artists often have assistants that help them draw background characters, but those background characters can’t be too different from the main style either.
As for the people who believed the call out post before, it’s perfectly understandable. I am also guilty of falling for similar posts in the past. Due to that, I decided it was best to double check before retweeting (i say retweet because i use twitter far more than tumblr these days. heck i almost never post anything on this blog) things, and if i wasn’t sure, I would just leave it be.
I hope my post was able to convince you on Falco’s innocence and all his hard work. And if you already believed him but checked out this post anyways… Thanks! ObligatoryPleaseWatchAotuWorld.
And again:
Art does NOT exist in a vacuum. All artists are influenced by each other and MANY artists, especially professionals, use a lot of references, whether it be from photographers, their own pictures, others’ artwork, life, or whatever. We all use many different resources. If you’re going to say that’s wrong, you just dismissed millions of artists in the world.

COMIC TEA PARTY- THURSDAY BOOK CLUB START!
Good evening, everyone~! This week’s Thursday Book Club is officially beginning! Today we are discussing Asteroid 8082 by Will Quinn~! (https://asteroid8082.com/)
Remember that Thursday discussions are completely freeform! However, every 30 minutes I will drop in OPTIONAL discussion questions in case you’d like a bit of a prompt. If you miss out on one of these prompts, you can find them pinned for the chat’s duration. Additionally, remember that while constructive criticism is allowed, our focus is fun and respectfully appreciating the comic. All that said, let’s begin!
QUESTION 1. What is your favorite scene in the comic so far and why?
my favorite scene is probably at the beginning when corrina is getting a tour of the colony. i really love the design for the colony and how theres just like this conveyor belt that goes through the whole place. for the life of me i never wouldve thought of a design like that but it works so well in making it feel familiar, foreign, and futuristic
but i also like the door designs you see as they pass by because it still has that mark of needing to be kind of a sterile and effecient environment
but all around i really enjoyed how quickly and simply it built up the world in the background and really kind of drove home how corrina is in an entirely new situation
Knytt
Hmm, that's good to hear. I was worried about the sterility being too much
i mean, I'm used to drawing outdoor environments, so it was a challenge
Oh! I'm Will Quinn, by the way!
...
sorry, I forgot that wasn't clear on Discord.
RebelVampire
thank you for coming~! its nice to see a creator come by.
Knytt
well, I usually lurk around here
...but rarely comment
thank you for having me!
RebelVampire
another scene that i really enjoyed was the one where theyre kind of bantering over the hoverbike and corrina accepts the challenge and is like "nah i can drive." that was the moment where i truly felt that corrina was indeed a kid since she was trying so hard to look cool. but it was also a nice moment of vulnerability too in that way. like showing that you can be as mature as you want, but that doesnt mean peer pressure isnt there
Knytt
Yeah. Corrina really does try to act cool
And before that scene I guess she succeeded
RebelVampire
idk if she succeeded so much as a lot of scenes her uncoolness felt like it came from a different place of insecurity. like not so much peer pressure, but more from being alien to a new place and being insecure in her own adjustment
Knytt
Hmm, that actually reminds me of something.
When my spouse was reading the comic, she saw Corrina as the main character.
But my original idea was that Iris was (my spouse is an immigrant)
So I've always been curious about how people saw that
RebelVampire
i personally saw corrina more as the protagonist myself. not that iris wasnt a main character. but corrina felt more like the main of the main characters. but this is inherent bias that between the two, corrina was introduced first.
Knytt
I see!
Thank you
I should mention that chapter 3 was originally supposed to be the first chapter
RebelVampire
hmm, interesting. that def would have changed things then cause itd have been a lot more even.
but it is pretty even between the two as is. i just connected a bit more with corrina. i think it also has a lot to do that corrina feels like the more grounded character between the two. Iris as been on the asteroid for years upon years so none of the culture stuff feels weird to her or anything. Whereas Corrina is like "yup this is weird." and as an earthling who doesnt live on an asteroid, that is basically how you feel seeing everything. so corrina provides a really needed grounding influence for that reason. its a lot easier to understand how she feels in regards to the world and shes easier to sympathize with from the immediate start cause its kind of a fish out of water intro.
mathtans
Made it here. I rather liked the "no use of ozzes", just as one-off comedy.
Also the conversation near the start of "you live in one building?" "oh no, no... three".
Checking the backlog now. Yeah, the conveyer belt was a neat idea too. There's a lot of interesting science happening behind the scenes that comes out every so often, which is pretty neat.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 2. The comic’s setting is quite futuristic and different from Earth, causing a number of culture clashes for the characters. What ways of life on the asteroid interested you the most? What sorts of details did you notice in general in how the colony was culturally and physically structured? Of the culture clashes that occurred between the characters, which one did you find the most compelling and why? Which culture similarities did you notice remained between Earth and the asteroid colony? Why do you think those cultural elements and traditions stood the test of time? Last but not least, how similar or different do you feel other colonies would be?
hey math~!
i did enjoy that joke as well about the nah we live in three buildings
like that was supposed to be marketably better XD
mathtans
I think I see Corrina as the main, in large part because we see her arrive as the outsider. Outsiders are generally mains in stories, because stuff needs to get explained to them the way it needs to get explained to readers.
Also, she's from Earth, and so are we.
Hi Rebel & creator!
Knytt
Hi!
mathtans
One of the things that I found kind of interesting was the whole planet/asteroid loophole issue. Hadn't thought about how governing would work in that sense.
But there were also subtle details, like the colour of the sky on Earth.
RebelVampire
yeah i was really interested in the politics. especially cause they briefly mentioned a war and like...man. space wars already. thats a pretty heavy thing to admit in passing.
but it was interesting to see that there is some complicated governance stuff going on cause i feel thats reflective of how itd probably be in life
mathtans
I'm not sure I even picked up on the war aspect. It was more the trying to get rights and using ships as bargaining points.
It makes sense but I doubt I'd have thought of something like that.
Knytt
I'm glad someone liked these science/future bits, because I definitely spent a lot of time planning them! (compared to how often they come up, of course.)
And Math, there was a war mentioned briefly
mathtans
Yeah, that's always the lament of worldbuilding, you do all this stuff and then it never really comes up. The short strip about the gravity thing in between parts was a good way to do it though.
Oh, I don't doubt it, just mean it kinda sailed over my head.
Knytt
Actually, Iris's father was closely involved in the war, btw
RebelVampire
thats fair cause when i said it was mentioned in passing, i really mean it was mentioned in passing. but it was bad enough to cause some long lasting political effects for even their asteroid. and considering their asteroid is kind of out there, you can only imagine the effects it had on bigger colonies.
that is an interesting factoid
mathtans
Iris' father does seem the type
Knytt
I made an upcoming short comic where Corrina talks more about it
The war, I mean...
But it'll be in a printed anthology
mathtans
I wonder if the spacers know about trees and plants and stuff.
Though that reminds me of another interesting aspect, that whole idea of "wearing the clothes of another culture". And Iris is like, wear whatever.
RebelVampire
yeah i really liked how thinking of things like "oh that person is japanese" is considered archaic by iris
cause it opens up the question of at what point in someones heritage do they stop being one nationality and become another
and i liked seeing how that question had evolved in regards to space travel in the comic
cause space travel comes with a lot of huge punches in that arena
mathtans
Yeah, it's sort of a planet culture rather than a country culture.
But an asteroid isn't even big enough for a planet culture, so it's more of a mixed bag.
RebelVampire
yeah, but still i think the point stands. in that the comic really makes you think about what constitutes a culture and how a countries culture may no longer matter in the future. it may come to be entirely about each particular communities culture.
speaking of culture, i really liked the bit with corrina and iris arguing about child labor laws. i thought that was such an interesting piece of culture. but also sensible because generally a colony would need everyone pitching in to survive so it makes sense iris would help. not to mention i cant imagine theres much for a kid to do on an asteroid. yet, i also understand corrina's point. so it was just an interesting argument where both sides had some fantastic points even though nothing was solved.
mathtans
Community, that's a good way of putting it. And yeah, nice to have those grey debates where neither side is necessarily right.
Also, the way Iris summed it up later as "she concluded she was smarter than me" (or whatever it was) felt true to the age (whether it really is I dunno, but it felt that way).
Knytt
When I was writing a lot of these scenes, I was worried people would take it the wrong way, politically. I was trying to have sort of "grey" debates like you said, and I'm glad that came through
RebelVampire
yeah i think the comic did a great job of being more thought provoking than anything when it came to these sorts of areas. cause theres a lot to dissect.
like another moment i really enjoyed was how even though the asteroid is seemingly very disconnected from a lot of earth culture, everyone was still super stoked to watch some sports. so it was interesting to see how even when separated, older cultural phenomenons still kind of continue to be present. not to mention theres lots of one culture affecting another, even though its earth culture affecting colony culture in this case.
mathtans
That reminds me, the asteroid was always seemingly having internet troubles, yet the door to the food station room said "free wifi". I found that funny.
Knytt
Oh, that's right!
mathtans
It was also a bit amusing that when they finally got to watching the sports game, there was almost more interest in the field and the spectators.
RebelVampire
tbf wifi and internet are separate entities. you can have wifi without the internet. so not false advertising, just a useless service.
mathtans
Indeed!
I figure they bought the door surplus. One of those items they were paid money to take off someone's hands.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 3. Though filled with lots to say about culture, the story also has a strong focus on character. For what reasons do you feel Corrina and Iris struggled with their relationship initially? Between the two, which one did you identify with more in regards to their feelings? By the end, did you feel the two characters truly overcame their issues with one another? Or, did you feel that there would still be many moments of strife between the two? Equally so, between all three children characters, how do you think their perceptions of each other changed over the course of the story? Finally, which character did you enjoy the most overall and why?
mathtans
I will say that as soon as Corrina confused Iris for a boy, I was shipping them. Or a future them in a few years, at any rate. Gotta get my ships in there.
Though I think wondering if Iris was a "fanboy" was almost the greater faux pas. With the implication of Corrina's popularity in there.
As to which character I enjoyed more... that's tough. It really kind of depends. I think maybe overall I prefer Iris, but she does go a bit too far sometimes - or in the case of giving up on fruitcake, maybe not far enough - and in those cases I'm more for Corrina.
Knytt
Heh, if I ship them too, is that canon?? I definitely identify with Iris more, but I like Corrina better I think
RebelVampire
i think i overall identified more with corrina more just because i felt corrina was trying hard at least to make friends while looking cool. whereas iris was just a grumpy bear of insecurity. so between the two corrina felt more sympathetic. not to say corrina was perfect cause that whole "fanboy" thing made me think "girl turn it down a notch we get it youre very cool"
Knytt
Yea, both of them need to take it down a notch...
RebelVampire
but tbf, i think the reason that they struggled with their relationship is that theyre super similar. cause they both seem to be insecure and have a desperate need to appear cool to each other. but because theyre trying to achieve the same thing, they both come off kind of pompous and butt heads. cause even though they have the same goal, they each handle it super differently. cause corrina is focused on kind of raising herself up to appear cool whereas iris feels like she wants to just not be looked down on.
Knytt
I worked as a teacher before doing this, so I tried to make them seem like the kids I taught
in terms of their insecurities
mathtans
Heh, canon ship is now in. Yeah, Corrina's more sympathetic, but I kind of like how Iris is outspoken at times, like even speaking up about politics and things.
I teach high school, so I kind of know the feeling.
Meanwhile the guy is just basically clueless to all that.
Superjustinbros
Hello!
I hope I'm not too kate~
RebelVampire
hey super~!
yeah i agree, between the two i felt iris was perhaps more worldly and that while she might know all the tech stuff corrina does, shes way more versed in like social and political situations than corrina
Superjustinbros
...Wow I'm amazed at how much progress this comic made in only about almost a year of production.
And it finds a way to work in monochrome as well
mathtans
I'm with the commenter on that one strip by the way, where Joe was saying to Iris "Corinna's the only cute girl out here", I'd have kicked him.
RebelVampire
i really do think the black and white suits the world too. makes it feel more space like.
i was super surprised joe got away with that XD
mathtans
Yeah, that's a good point, what with space being black.
RebelVampire
not that i dont understand where joe is coming from. not that iris isnt cute, but iris is also his bestie so automatically not available or even on the consideration block.
Superjustinbros
“i really do think the black and white suits the world too. makes it feel more space like.”
I second that- makes me wonder what will happen if the main cast ever lands on a regular planet- will the story suddenly shift to color?
mathtans
Oh yeah, I get it, guy be clueless because he grew up around her. I suppose I shouldn't complain, he'd spoil the Iris/Corinna ship.
Knytt
I'm not sure I'd be good at drawing Luna or Mars...
There's a short comic about Corrina on Earth though
(also black and white)
Superjustinbros
oh lol I didn't realize the creators were here, heh.
Knytt
Hiya!
Superjustinbros
Well I think the black and white works regardless
Hiya!
There's a good usage of clever shading to show depth
mathtans
I kinda wonder what it is they study out there. Aside from each other.
Superjustinbros
(also I'm in love with the simple character designs and the bead eyes, they fit the style of the comic)
RebelVampire
yeah i was wondering that too. especially in regards to what corrina did to get labeled a genius and made an intern despite her age.
Knytt
Corrina's main area of study is physics
specifically "gravity manipulation", a relatively new field that Iris's father helped develop
Superjustinbros
Sorry if I'm not focusing on the questions atm, I'm kind of stuck in conversations in other chats.
mathtans
So she understands the gravity of the situation.
Superjustinbros
"gravity", heh.
Knytt
slow claps
RebelVampire
yes, so im sure shell stay grounded in her studies
mathtans
I suppose gravity's lighter on an asteroid, must make things easier to monitor for fluctuations.
RebelVampire
this reminds me that one moment i found really funny was when they were fixing the tower and then the thing they used to fix it was a fraction of the size of the original
Knytt
Yep. That's how technology!
RebelVampire
QUESTION 4. As a slice-of-life, sci-fi, there is a lot to be said about the comic’s approach to life. In what ways did you see our present day lives represented in the comic? Additionally, how did the comic affect how you think about the way we live life right at this moment? Given this comic is also set in the future, what scenarios from the story do you think are the most plausible that we’ll see in real life once we reach that level of space travel? Alternatively, what scenarios do you feel might change due to the length of time it’s going to take for us to get to that future? Overall, what is your ultimate take away from the comic’s message about life, people, or anything related?
yeah. that was a moment i indetified with iris tho. cause it made sense cause that is how technology do, but i was equally confused how it was meant to be replaced at first when they didnt have a giant thing with them
mathtans
That remark reminds me of the fear of heights. It's nice to have little things like that which characters have to overcome, or otherwise delegate.
Superjustinbros
If the future happens I don't want it to be on nothing but meteorites and other extraterrestrial masses of land.
Feels... lonely too in a way
mathtans
I like how they still do stuff we do, like try to watch sports, or bake fruitcakes. Even if they don't necessarily do it often.
(Resulting in ghosts speaking to you, eerie.)
RebelVampire
i enjoyed that fruitcake was still considered mostly awful
except by joe who has nostalgia glasses for it
mathtans
Heh, yeah. Also, Christmas, still a thing.
(Who won the 'war on Christmas' then?)
Knytt
I thought "of course they'll still have Christmas"! We don't sacrifice a goat anymore, do we??
Superjustinbros
lol
Space Christmas: The holiday of the Future
mathtans
Well, in Sweden they kind of do. (Google 'straw goat'.)
Knytt
I've seen those! they're cool
RebelVampire
speaking of xmas i found it kind of humorous that iris kind of assumed joe was just in some sort of cult
Knytt
Oh yeah, the Pilgrims
I imagine any religion would seem a bit cultish to Iris.
RebelVampire
tbf tho there is kind of a fine line between a cult and religion in some respects. so it makes sense for any child to not really necessarily understand the difference.
Knytt
yea
mathtans
As to character bonding, the ship is maybe starting at the end there with the having something to drink together while watching the fruitcake.
RebelVampire
of the scenarios we see, i actually think the lack of attachment to nationality is the most plausible for a real life future for us. cause its hard to be attached to that when the world is spread out.
you mean your corrina iris ship?
mathtans
yis. must have yuri ships.
Superjustinbros
I second that, Rebel.
RebelVampire
https://asteroid8082.com/comic/chapter-2-page-11/
cause personally i thought that ship started there
cause knowing iris' personality she tots thinks that looks cute but wont say so
mathtans
Heh. I'd forgotten about that moment. It was nice too.
Iris probably kept the clothes in case Corrina changed her mind.
RebelVampire
tbf where would the clothes go otherwise?
its a 3 building colony that doesnt sell anything according to iris XD
mathtans
Maybe someone will offload some dept store dummies.
Superjustinbros
oh boy we got ships in this comic? owo
mathtans
We can ship Joe with one of the dummies.
Knytt
Iris think she's cute. pay attention to the phrasing: https://asteroid8082.com/comic/chapter-3-page-7/
mathtans
Finally a cute girl.
Good point there.
Incidentally, I wonder if 8082 has any particular significance.
RebelVampire
look at that ship sail
Knytt
the number 8082? hmm, not a lot
Superjustinbros
space ships
ba da ching
Knytt
I wanted it to be like "there are a lot of other asteroids; it's not important enough to have a name"
RebelVampire
that is the impression i got. that it was just a no name number cause heck there be a lot of colonies and asteroids and stuff
mathtans
I wondered if there was some kind of filing system, like it was system 80 and they were on the 82nd rock or something.
Knytt
There is a system! Asteroid 8082 isn't the 8082nd asteroid.
RebelVampire
the 82nd rock from the sun
Knytt
the 8 at the beginning is the number designation for that charter
so that's right!
There are 8 charters. think I mentioned that... so there are no asteroids in the 9000's
RebelVampire
interesting
https://asteroid8082.com/comic/chapter-4-bonus-2/ off topic but before i forget, i really liked this bonus comic. it was nice to see that there was kind of no reasonable expectation for the kids to fix it. and it more seems like adults being adults and just wanting the kids out of their hair so they can work.
Superjustinbros
Yeah.
mathtans
Ahh, that makes sense.
Yeah, that extra comic was fun, but I think in part because they were keen on the outcome too. Happy ending all around.
(Until they learn of the crash.)
RebelVampire
yeah i was kind of sad we didnt get to see them react to that
the adults
cause i bet that was a scolding about hovercraft safety
Knytt
I thought of making a bonus comic where Joe gets his hat back...
mathtans
Other ship: Joe and his hat.
It was nice that Iris cared about getting it back, when he couldn't seem to vocalize it.
Before the end, also want to mention that some of the science behind the scenes is cool. Like what happened when that hatch opened, I hadn't thought about that stuff.
RebelVampire
yeah i was a little surprised corrina was so cold hearted seeming about it. not that i didnt understand her point, just was surprised. especially considering corrina was the one who was like "lets make fruit cake for joe"
mathtans
Also the initial visual of walking away from the ship itself is interesting, what with wondering about being able to breathe.
I don't think Corrina was cold hearted, it was more, I'm busy trying to fly this thing, let's deal with that another time.
Superjustinbros
Anyways since the CTP is ending soon, I'd like to wish the authors luck on the rest of the comic- it's coming along great so far and the artstyle is amazing and well-drawn.
mathtans
Woohoo for bonus content.
Knytt
Thanks everyone for coming and talking!
mathtans
Thanks for creating!
Knytt
Oh, and if anyone's interested in that prequel story on Earth, it'll be in this kickstarter anthology (we just went live today!) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/386994989/planetside-anthology?ref=cbco55

jedimaster-shiro mentioned you in a post
@greenpaladinofnature the handbook is official; Lauren and Joaquim aren't the only people who approve for Voltron. The writer of the novelizations is writing this one.
AND YOU ARE DAFT!!!! DREAMWORKS the peopel with the most say DISCREDITED the paladin handbook (Agreeing with teh authors) saying it is NOT offical!~
also this space mall book is BELOW like FAR BELOW the target auduence for the pg 13 rateing prompted by dreamworks for VLD due to SCIFI VIOLENCE! also published by the same publisher (thast SOESFICALY MAKES CHILDRENS ACTIVITY BOOKS) with no author noted on the blog, promoted by the same voltron blog THAT DREAMWORKS ADMITS IS NOT AN OFFICAL BLOG BTW. “we do not own tumblrs for voltron”-the Dreamworks Question desk attendee I asked.
All this tells me many things that ARE CONFIRMED OR WERE WITHIN WEEKS AFTER THE PEUMPTO RELEASE OF THE BOOKS IN QUESTION.
The books were not Pitched at all to Dreamworks before being put into print because they were pitched to simon spotlight as Childrens activity books (the paladin handbook may be canceled because of this)
DREAMWORKS not just the wuthors said they never gave the greren light yet for the paladin handbook (the space mall and pidge are as yet unknown)
There have been knockoffs before peopel liek you defended as legit that were CONFIRMED KNOCKOFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KNOCKOFF meaning not offical!
knockoff meaning PLAGERIZED CONTENT
or in thie case of the books KNOCKOFF meaning PARODY
thats right the paladin handbook is calssified as a Parody Knockoff! BECAUSE OF TEH AGES THING.
so
YA NOT OFFCIAL BY ANY MEANS!!!
Nice try but I am in the field in question, I am a publsihed comic artist I am a legit contracted artist in the field of published works (Comics books specaly childrens activity books and cartooning) the fact peopel liek you IGNORE THAT to a point where you defend SHIT when I say its fishy and than try and continue to defend it WHEN ITS REVEALED I WAS RIGHT pisses me off to NO END!!!!!
what part of DREAMWORKS IS SAYING THIS BOOK SI NOT OFFICAL did you not undserstand. they dont even have a tumblr for voltron. they have a twitter but not a tumblr last I actualy went to a Q&A and asked if they had an offical voltron tumblr.
I WENT TO DREAMWORKS AND ASKED IS THIS YOURS and got a no! I ask about news on the paladin handbook when peopel were getting preprders before the release and got a link to a statement made by them that bascily said “We dont have an offical paladin handbook” and it was THEM defending the writers comments on the handbook not beign offical.
all this that I DID to shit UP the comments liek the one you sent me and you BASTARDS STILL ARE IGNOREING THAT DREAMWORKS CONFIRMED THE PALADIN HANDBOOK IS NOT OFFICAL!!!!
its a knockoff that got thruhg the system.
That being said its still a fucking knockoff!
