idk of it's just me but i don't understand, the atla fandom, from all ships existing would just slander zukka out of nowhere. like mf i just want to see my boys being silly and in love in fanwork, why they need to be so mean lmao

I think it's because for close to 20 years, Kataang and Zutara were reining supreme in ship wars and fandom space. Jetko was the main mlm ship before but it didn't have nearly the same popularity. No other ship could even touch those two and those two continued arguing about what's best for canon.

Now though? Zukka's the second most popular ship on ao3- all of those fics and content showed up in 3 years. And suddenly the Netflix actors are pushing for Zukka practically every interview while actively dissuading Zutara(and hinting strongly at Kataang- thanks Gordon & Kiawentiio going "he/she's my.....family, yeah let's say family *wink* *wink*"). They're getting extremely popular and now fucking Netflix, Entertainment Weekly and Deadline are tagging #zukka in the year of our lord 2024(thank you for your service Dallas Liu, braver than the marines). Popular ships unfortunately get hate, especially queer ships, like just as a baseline regardless of if it's a canonically supported or unsupported ship, if it's "morally correct or incorrect".

This 'crackship' that no one took seriously suddenly feels...like a threat to these people??? Like we can joke about hahaha zukka gayyyy but we all know that's just silly gobbledygook right? (Not saying Zukka should or could be canon, but just the fact that people are seriously considering it as a ship option in fandom makes people act weird)

A lot of the the points made for "why Zukka is bad actually" are so funny though, that my initial irritation is fading and I'm just laughing at it. Some highlights that made me actually lose it:

Zukka is misogynist to Katara because, and I shit you not, they think that we think Katara is homophobic sdjfhbbgvh. I was shook when I discovered this was a thing.

Zukka bad because Klance bad (war flashbacks to Voltron)

I think people who are Big Mad don't get that we're genuinely just chilling and making silly stuff without thinking too much about what SHOULD happen in canon. Everyone in ATLA fandom takes the show and the fandom far too seriously, like losing a fan discussion is somehow a slight upon their personal morals.

We coasted along without much hate for a good while but the increasing popularity means Zukka as a ship is going to get bashed ;_; I think the best we can do is block and ignore instead of engaging(very hypocritcal of me rn tbh, I'll try to stop).

OOOH! Good question and I have kind of an interesting answer. So when I watched S1 I picked up on the fact that Eleven would likely be a love interest for Mike (female protagonist + male protagonist smh) but I also had this other weird feeling about Mikes relationship with Will. From the very first episode i just knew Will was gay. Especially with all the bullying he got. Since a lot of it was also targeted at Mike I had a feeling he was being queer coded as well. The way his parents interacted with him made me a little suspicious. The love Mike had for Will compared to his other friends also convinced me something was going on.

In S2 I dead thought Mike had something going on for Will. He was super protective of him and I just knew it was something deeper than him being his best friend. The S2 EP2 Crazy together scene is where I started gaining more of an interest in seeing what would happen with them.

I think the very moment when I was like “this is a real ship and I could see it happening” was S2 EP5. This is when Will is freaking out about the MF and Mike Grabs his hand. From that moment I knew it was canon

My friend started off with her saying she named the characters Ryan and the Professor—using his real name Connie. I got extremely excited and asked her what she wrote.

She said she killed the Professor. Mf can't escape death even outside his show what the HYELL

So I demand for more details 'cause WHAT THE HYELL. Her prompt was apparently: Write a narrative story that included the phrase "I knew what I had to do. I just didn't like doing it."

And so she wrote a story with the following details:

Ryan and the Professor are married

The Professor is a woman now 'cause our country hates gay people smh

One day while Ryan and the Professor were in a car ride, Ryan accidentally swerved which caused a car accident and put the Professor in a coma.

The story takes place 99 days after the coma. The Professor was currently on life support.

The whole story is essentially Ryan and the Professor's mom, Dinosara—named Sara in this story—debating with each other on whether to take the Professor off life support.

Obviously Ryan didn't want to kill his. wife. And Dinosara didn't want to kill her daughter, but she thought that not pulling the plug would just prolong the Professor's suffering.

They cried. A lot.

Eventually, Ryan finally agreed with her—that's when he dropped the "I knew what I had to do. I just didn't like doing it." line—and the fic ends with Ryan taking the Professor off life support.

I’m sure it wasn’t posted with malicious intent, but as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, your post about Seventeen’s sexualities is kind of upsetting. Opinions are one thing but unless an idol confirms their sexuality themselves (like S. Coups, Yoongi, kinda Moonbyul), it’s really distasteful to say stuff like that. Especially when you acknowledged the backlash you might receive over it with the “blah blah blah.” This is exactly why so many idols are scared to engage in skinship with one another and how some of them end up losing the bonds they’ve formed together because people want to sexualize their relationship. Men should be allowed to love one another and engage in skinship without it meaning they’re gay or secretly romantically involved. Members kissing and hugging and showing genuine love for each other is exactly the same as girls kissing their friends while drunk or snuggling when they’re bored. fr tho i loved the fact that we had a real prelude for this region.. i think the excuse to make something a little more isolated and establishing in it's plot is already super beneficial for whats to come. we got a lot more character exposition, and even the time to install these cool archon quest specific mechanics. i loved solving everything, it was all SO fun but they also got to have these really emotional beats, i feel this is some of their best pacing yet.

imo the last half of sumeru really helped hoyoverse find their stride, fontaine so far has similar storytelling energy to the whole heist bit of sumeru.

the best thing however might've been the SCORE??? they went out of their league with this one, it's the most fitting, noticable and influential instrumental work they've done in an quest imo
