You’ll be Okay (Chelsea WFC x Reader)
Tumblr media
warnings: none
a/n: so so sad about the team moms leaving :((
prompt: in which you have to cope with the news of magda and pernille leaving chelsea
You had had your first suspicion that maybe Magda and Pernille would be leaving at the end of the season when you lost out on the Conti Cup to Arsenal. You just imagined that they were upset when you hugged them tight and told them that you would lift the trophy next year. Magda and P shared a quick, sad look before smiling at you. "Of course," they had said.
They announced it too the team two months before it was announced to the public, and you had never felt more naive.
Actually, the couple had announced their departure with Magda’s help to the team while you were in a private session with the therapist. You had recently gone through quite the scary event as angry Manchester United fans spent the whole time you walked out of the stadium yelling horrible things at you. You had never seen the girls so angry. Guro yelled at a few people, sweet, calm Jessie had to be held back by Sam to go give a piece of her mind to a woman in a Leah Galton jersey. You had insisted you didn’t need therapy and that you were fine, but it ended up being beneficial.
This had all been planned out. They would tell everyone as you were with the therapist, and then they would tell you separately after training.
Magda and Pernille walked up to the front of the room, and although everyone knew what was coming, most people still cried. Almost no one on the team had known a Chelsea without Magda and the idea of her not being around felt horrible.
The girls delivered their speech, crying themselves and then they allowed questions. "What club are you guys going too?" Sam asked. "We can’t say yet, sorry," Magda said, earning a frustrated groan from the australian. "If you guys go to Arsenal…" Jessie started saying. "Gross! No! Of course not," Pernille said. "Wait- where’s y/n?" Niahm asked, looking around the room.
The blondes at the front of the room shared a quick look. "Uhm, were- were telling her separately after practice," Magda said, holding P’s hand. "Which- actually, is that a good idea? It’s the right decision right?" Pernille asked.
The blues all nodded. "Yeah, I mean I’ve known her since we were fifteen and she’s never had a… a parent figure like you guys in her life before. She’s gonna be happy for you guys but… she’s gonna take it really hard," Jessie said, pursing her lips together.
Your therapy ended two minutes before the start of training so you headed to the meeting room.
The second you opened the door, something felt wrong. Every head turned to you and Magda and P seemed to have just been sat down. You scanned the room, smiling tentatively. "What are all of you weirdos looking at?" you asked them, letting the door close behind you and taking a seat at a table composed of Magda, P, Niahm, Z and Jessie. "Nothing! You just caught us by surprise," Magda said quickly. "Okay weirdos" you joked.
Practice flew by quickly as it almost always did. Thankfully, as you had a game tomorrow, Emma didn't, make you do fitness and you were all instructed to take it easy. You did notice that Emma pulled Magda and Pernille to the side towards the end of practice, and although you did wonder what that was all about, you didn't ask.
"Emma told us that she doesn't want us to tell y/n about the move until after tomorrow's game. I feel dirty, it feels gross not to tell her when everyone else knows," Magda told Millie and Zecira after her talk with Emma as you watched from afar.
That night, you went home knowing something was wrong. But you ordered Chinese food and watched a movie with Jessie, who was your roomate, before going to bed.
There was no other way to describe your performance against Tottenham. You had played spectacularly, scoring a hat trick and assisting Guro. You were on top of the world, and then your world came crashing down.
You all headed towards the changing room, but before you could get into the area, you felt your wrist being grabbed. You turned around quickly to see Pernille holding your hand. "What is it?" you asked, moving to the side to let your teammates in. You could see on the faces of the girls piling into the changing room that they knew something you didn't.
The women in front of you shared a look. "Stop with the looks. Everyone knows something I don't so please just tell me," you said firmly.
"Y/n... I've been with Chelsea for six years... and, Pernille has been here for three and we've- we have decided that it's time for us to... to concur another part of the world. To leave Chelsea," Magda said.
They searched for a reaction in your eyes for a solid twenty seconds. Your eyes were watery but you were hoping your fake smile cancelled out the tears. But they saw through you. "That's great! When are you announcing it to the public?" you asked, your voice clearly shaking. "Honey..." Pernille tried to say but you cut her off immediately. "No. No please don't call me that. I'm happy for you, you're going to do well but I- there are dozens of photographers outside that are going to take pictures of me and there's no way I'm walking out of there with puffy red eyes so please just let me act as though I don't care," you said, letting so much and so little out at the same time.
It was already too late though, your face was covered in tears and your nose was running. Magda didn't wait five seconds before pulling you and her girlfriend into her. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry I'm being so selfish. This is good for you guys," you sobbed into Magda's hair. "We don't think you're selfish, we understand. We know," Pernille answered.
Walking back into the changing room was hard, but thankfully most people were in the shower so all you had to do was grab your Chelsea sweatsuit and rush into the shower. After showering, you slipped on your blue Chelsea sweatpants and then the matching blue hoodie. It was only once you had put it on that you noticed the number 16 was embroidered on the right side. Magda had switched it out. You smiled and combed your hair before heading back to the main room to put on your jewelry and your shoes. Magda and Pernille were waiting outside for you, and you all walked out together.
You woke up the morning of May 18 knowing that today was the day that the world got the confirmation that Magda Ericsson and Pernille Harder were moving on from their life as blues. You were still on a high from the FA cup, and as long as you beat Arsenal on the 21st, the league title would probably be once again, the blues. But today you felt nothing but devastation, as you could no longer be in denial of your two team mothers leaving. You had prepared a goodbye post for them, knowing that on their actual last game for Chelsea, you would never be able to summon up enough energy to post a goodbye.
You had chosen three pictures, one of you asleep on Magda's shoulder in the bus when you had only been playing for Chelsea for about two months, the other of Pernille caring you over her shoulder in the streets of Portland during pre season, you were both laughing loudly. And the last one was a collage of three pictures of you, Magda and Pernille. The three pictures were of your three FA cups, and in every picture you were between the both of them, holding the trophy, and they were kissing your cheek. You were a family, and that really showed in those pictures.
The caption was what you put most thought into however. It read:
I genuinely can't think of a day in the past two years and a little more where I didn't send a text to our group chat, ranting about how good or bad the meal I had was, how the lady in the apartment in front of mine always gave me the stink eye, or just texting you to tell you that Jessie was still on my back about leaving my towels on the floor. I'll always be able to text you, but now I can't take the ten minute walk to your apartment anymore. Now I have to give you guys the key you gave me back. Two FA cups won with you guys, and certainly, two league titles ;) I love you both, I love you for being my soulmates, and I love you for defending me on the field, smack talking the players who injure me, and always being my honorary mothers. Go destroy another league now, and don't forget that Friday's at 8:00, London time, are reserved for your daughters, me, Niahm, and Jessie.
You then got out of bed, waiting for the moment where Chelsea FCW would post on their instagram about the departure of their skipper before posting your message. You had a rare off day today, a day in which you had planned to have brunch with Jessie, Pernille, Niahm, Magda, Sam and Kristie, who was visiting her girlfriend.
You headed towards Jessie's bedroom and then knocked on the door twice. "Come in," you heard her voice say, but it sounded heavy and tired. "You okay, Jess?" you asked gently, sitting down next to her and looking at her. Her cheeks were slightly wet with tears and her eyes were red. "I don't want them to leave. I hadn't let myself think about the fact that they were leaving until today and now all the emotions I should have let myself feel over the past two months are all coming up now," she said.
You looked at her sadly, pulling her in into a hug. "You can cry, Jess, everyone is going to. We play Arsenal at Kingsmeadow in three days and god knows I'm going to cry. I'll try not too, but I will. Let's just focus on the time we have with them, right?" you told her. You felt her nod against your shoulder before pulling away from her. You gently wiped her tears and smiled at her, looking into her eyes, before leaving the room to let her get changed.
May 23, Kingsmeadow, the last home game of Hardesson. You felt like death against a team you needed to all feel alive against. So, that morning, you dragged Jessie out of bed, she made breakfast while you gathered up your pre match kits and made coffee. After breakfast, you were out of the house. "I feel like Magda's gonna score today," you told your best friend as you turned into Kingsmeadow. "Hmm, I feel like you're going to score today," she said to you. "Yeah but I always score," you jokingly said, trying to lighten the mood.
Walking into the changing rooms, Magda seemed a bit down but Pernille was all smiles, they contrasted each other well. There were pretty obviously two groups, the ones who were sad but wouldn't cry over the departure of the team mothers, and the ones who seemed more scared of a team that didn't have Magda as captain.
But the second the starting eleven walked onto the field, you were all professionals, ready to fight tooth and nail for the title. You wanted to lift one more trophy with your Danish and Swedish mothers.
The first goal came in the 22 minute by your sliding header. A free kick was taken by Niahm but it went a bit far into the box. But you read the play well, Manu didn't react quick enough and so you threw yourself head first to connect with the ball for it to land in the far netting. You landed on your stomach but quickly got up and celebrated with the fans and your team. Jessie had been right.
And then, it was your turn to be right. Magda scored. You had never felt more joy over a goal someone else had scored, your heart lit up, your smile had never been bigger and you hugged Magda and kissed her forehead over and over.
2-0 win. That was a very good score, and you were ecstatic about it. You did feel a little sorry for Katie McCabe's missed penalty, but that was football.
And then came the waterworks. As the team walked around the stadium, clapping for the fans, you felt the need to step aside at the bench for a second. Magda and Pernille were leaving. You had never known a Chelsea without them, and now they were just going to be gone one random Monday. So, you went up to James, the team medic.
"James-" you started saying. "-I, uh, I need a favour from you. I need you to pretend that you're checking me for a- I don't know, a head injury? Yeah cause of the collision I got in with Catley. I feel like I'm seconds away from bursting out in tears and I want this moment to be about Magda and Pernille and not me feeling sorry for myself," you said to him.
James looked like he had not signed up for this, but eventually he smiled at you gently and told you to position yourself so your back faced the crowd. He started doing what he would usually do to check for a head injury as your bottom lip shook and tears streamed down your face. "You're aloud to be upset, y/n. It's not selfish, it's human. I say go out there after Magda and Pernille receive their legacy jersey's and don't be ashamed to cry. It's normal," he said to you. You had always liked James, he was like a silent force that always brought wisdom to the team. "I just don't want to make it about me," you said as he palpated your neck. "Crying wouldn't make it about you, if anything it would go to show how much of an effect they had on you, and how much you love them," he said.
You nodded slowly, starting to realize that maybe not being with the group attracted more attention than you wanted. So, you thanked him and jogged to meet the girls who were still going around and thanking the fans.
"You okay?" Kadeisha asked you, draping an arm around your shoulder. "Yeah, upset but yeah," you told her.
As the two gave their speeches, you really saw the contrast between them. Magda was absolutely breaking down in tears and Pernille was just laughing and smiling, rubbing her girlfriends back. The second their speeches were done, you couldn't hold back the tidewave of emotions you were feeling. You crouched down to the ground, pulling your jersey over your face and letting out a shaky sob. Right away, you felt a hand on your back and then you noticed that the person, or maybe people had crouched down next to you. "We will always be in your life, you know?" Magdas voice said sadly. "I know," you cried, pulling down your jersey and looking at her with broken eyes. "Is it stupid to be scared that you'll like your new team more and replace me. I don't want you to forget that you'll always be like my mother," you said to her.
She pulled you up to her feet and held your face, rubbing her thumb on your cheeks. "You will always be like my daughter. You, Jessie, Niahm, Sam, you are all my kids. I won't ever love a team more than this one, you hear me?"
You nodded and Magda pulled you into a hug, behind her, you could see Jessie crying and hugging Pernille.
It sucked, things sucked, but you knew that your mothers would always be your mothers, and that their heart would always be at least 60% blue.

I'm feeling sad today, so FLUFFY COLE X VANIA HEADCANONS TIME!
FEAST YOUR EYES UPON MY HALFBAKED SHIPPING IDEAS!!!🤣🤣🤣 Lol. I need something to cheer me up. These or Pixane usually does the trick. Also, I wrote most of these well past my bedtime. So you KNOW it's gonna be fun! Lol! And I have a little post-series stuff thrown in too. So these headcanons aren't canon to Dragons Rising. Just wanted to make that clear. Anyhoo, let's go!
1: Vania fell first. Cole fell harder.
2: They like to go hiking and spelunking ALL the time. They're the cutest little adventure duo ever! They've discovered all sorts of secret places in Shintaro's mountains. And even some ancient artifacts and cave paintings from Shintaro's past!
3: Whenever Cole visits Shintaro, Vania just lights up. She's happiest when she has her bestie with her.❤️
4: Vania once tried to teach Cole how to use the Shintarians Flight Packs. He was absolutely terrified at first. (Falling off of stuff trauma.😭) But Vania told him to focus on something nice so he wouldn't look down too much. He ended up looking at her. Cue mutual blushing and shy downward glances.🤣
5: Cole taught her some new dance moves. (She had been brought up on more refined forms of dance. Like waltz and such.) She wanted to try something different.
6: At first, they are both quite shy around each other. Not quite sure how close to get. But eventually once they got comfortable around each other, they became very snuggly and affectionate. Especially Cole.😊🧡🧡🧡
7: Everyone in the Ninja fam were super happy when Cole finally admitted to liking Vania. He'd always been so supportive of their own relationships. So they were happy he'd finally have a partner of his own to love.
8: Vise versa, the Geckle and Munce were very excited that the Skyfolk Queen was interested in the Son of Gilly/Milly.
9: Vania loves to chatter about her interests and Cole is always happy to listen. (Chatty Extrovert x Good Listener!😁) Vania sometimes secretly worries she's talking his ear off. She doesn't know that Cole loves just hearing her voice.🥹❤️
10: Vania is very protective of Cole. She loves him dearly. Even before they started their relationship. She wasn't kidding when she said she would bring her entire army to his aid. (As seen in Crystalized.) That being said, I think she would do anything in her power to help keep him safe.
Okay, post series ones now!
11: Cole had this perfect plan for proposing to her. Except he wasn't expecting one thing. When it finally came time to propose, Vania proposed at the same time. 🤣 They laughed about it more a good ten minutes before exchanging rings.
12: Cole ends up becoming King Consort of Shintaro. At first, the Shintarian people are a bit apprehensive to the idea of having some who isn't a Shintarian on the throne. But this changes quickly after seeing what a good ruler he is. And he quickly becomes popular with the people.
13: They have three kids. Their names are Valkyrie, Zephyr, and Collette. AKA Cole Jr.✨ More on that later.
14: Val and Zephie here are twins. But, they're aren't identical twins. Val looks more human and is the spitting image of Lilly. Except with streaks of gold in her black hair. Meanwhile, Zephyr looks more like a Shintarian. And he has the opposite. Gold hair with black streaks.
15: Cole was unbelievably excited about finally becoming a father. He'd always wanted kids of his own. When Val and Zephyr were born, he actually cried when he got to hold them. He couldn't believe him and Vania could make something so beautiful.
16: Collette is the baby of the family. She's adorable and definitely a daddy's girl. Also, this happened;👉
Jay: Hey Cole! I guess you missed out on naming one of your kids Cole Jr again, huh?
Cole: *smirks* Oh? Meet your niece, Collette.
Jay: A- *Jay EXE. has stopped*
Cole: *Dabs in victory*
Kai: Son of a gun. He did it.
And FINALLY, this funky quick doodle I did of them. It's kinda "Meh" but I tried.😅 (Vania is a nightmare for me to draw. Lol.)
Tumblr media
On a side note, I'll probably do something like this for each of my favorite Ninjago ships. That should be fun!
(Tagging @only-lonely-stars because I know she like these two. Hope you don't mind!)

Open your eyes - Millie Bright x reader
Tumblr media
Request: Hey based of the Chelsea womens win yesterday ! Would I be able to do a Millie bright x reader angst please 🙏🫶🏻
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“No, NO keep your eyes open! Please babe, open your eyes” Millie cries next to you.
Earlier that day…
You turn over in bed to feel cold bed sheets. You frown and roll out of bed to meet your fluffy slippers and robe crumpled up on the floor. After securing the robe on your waist, you move downstairs to see your girlfriend of 2 years in the kitchen. You walk up behind Millie and wrap your arms around her waist, your chin on her shoulder.
“Jesus babe, you scared me”
“I’m sorry” You mumble back as you kiss the side of her neck.
“I made you coffee. I was going to bring it up to you when this was done”
“You’re cute. Thank you baby” Millie turns around and you give her a slow but passionate kiss.
As you pull away, you see the time on the clock on your wall. How is it half past 11 already. You quickly drink the luke warm coffee and grab a piece of toast before racing upstairs. You completely forgot you’d pick up your younger sister Leah and Jords on the way to the Emirates. You flip your bedroom upside down trying to find your shorts. You bend over, looking in the last drawer when you feel a sharp pain on your ass.
“Ow babe, bloody hell” You grumble standing up, giving Millie a glare.
“Looking for these” Millie holds up your shorts and you let out a relived sigh.
“Thanks baby” You take the shorts from her and give her a kiss as a thank you.
You quickly slip your shoes on and kiss Millie out the door. As you start the car up, you jump in fright as you hear a knock on your window. You turn to see Millie holding up a pair of boots.
“Thanks babe”
“What would you do without me?” Millie smirks.
“Probably die Mills. I’ll see you later okay?”
“May the best team win. I love you”
“I love you too” Millie leans in to give you a peck.
You drive to Leah and Jords’ house and they’re waiting out the front with their gym bags. You greet them as they get in and you drive to the stadium. Leah of course teases you about being late and little do you know Millie’s teammates Sam and Erin are doing the same thing. Once you get to the stadium, you all get your passes and get to the locker room.
You all get changed into your game kits, you go out for pre-game warm ups. You and Katie pass the ball back and forth for a while until the team does some small games and exercises. You look behind you and see Millie staring at you. You send her a wink and she gets hit in the face with a ball by Guro. You laugh and get called over by Katie as everyone is going in the locker room to change into the game kits. You get ready with your starting lineup, including your sister and Katie.
After the usual lineup and captain procedures, you take your position across from Sam just over the half way line. Since Beth is out. Jonás has bumped you up to forward and you are loving it but you are missing being in the midfield trio with Viv and Lia. The ref blows her whistle and the North West London derby begins. All throughout the first half Chelsea are putting up a good fight, the Arsenal forwards struggling to get past the Chelsea midfield and back line.
The ref calls for half time and the score stands a nil all. You sit on the pitch for minute and take your boots off. Frustrated with your performance, you walk into the locker room and throw your boots in your locker, hard. A few of the girls jump at your sudden outburst and you sit on the floor with your knees up to your chest and head in your hands. You listen to Jonas talk tactics and look up when needed.
When Jonás leaves, a few of the girls including Katie and Leah attempt to talk to you but you only give them one word answers. You change your socks and slip your boots back on before going back out to the field, even if there was 10 minutes left off break. You grab a ball and practice shooting from different spots. You even did some of the runs that happened in the first half. You hear the fans cheering and you kick the last ball before turning around to see everyone coming back out. You went to get the ball but the trainer said he has it. You jog back to your place and see there’s subs coming on. You look over and see Tobin coming on and Caitlin coming off.
“We’ve got this okay? Trust the process” Tobin says as she runs past you. You give her a thumbs up and the ref blows the whistle.
It comes to the second minute of extra time in the game and you are preparing for a corner kick from Steph. You assisted Tobin in her goal in the 80th and unfortunately Jessie equalised for Chelsea 5 minutes later. Steph kicks the ball and you jump up to head the ball in. When you jump, the goalkeeper attempts to punch the ball away but hits something much worse, your face. You fall straight to the ground and are instantly unconscious. Millie noticed you on the ground and thankfully the game was called.
“No, NO keep your eyes open! Please babe, open your eyes” Millie cries next to you.
Leah was on your other side and she could see you were unconscious. She and Millie both yelled for the medics and they come running over with the bags. More medics rush over with a backboard and stretcher and both Leah and Millie hold onto each other tightly.
“We need to take her to hospital now” The paramedic says and Leah and Millie both go in the ambulance.
At the hospital, they rush you in and your sister and girlfriend try to run in after but get stopped by a nurse. The national teammates get re-directed to the family waiting area, where they hold each other’s hand tightly. 10 minutes later, the rest of Arsenal and some of Chelsea’s players turn up and wait with Millie and Leah. A few minutes later, your mum Amanda and brother Jacob race through the doors asking where you are. They race over to Leah and Millie. 4 hours later and not a word has been said to Millie or Leah and the pair are becoming restless. Leah decides she’s had enough so she goes up to the nurses station.
“Hi, my sister Y/N Williamson got admitted about 4 hours ago. Is there an update?” Leah begs as the nurse types your name into the computer.
“Ah yes, she’s in surgery right now. Shouldn’t be too much longer” Leah thanks the nurse and sits back next to Millie and tells her.
“Y/N Williamson” Leah, your mum, brother and Millie run up to the doctor. Millie and Leah are still holding onto each other tight, your mum and brother doing the same.
“Y/N came in with a intracranial hematoma. We’ve performed a craniotomy to remove the hematoma. She is in the ICU and should wake up within the next few hours” The doctor explains that only a few visitors at a time and what room you are in. They all thanked the doctor and went back to tell your teammates and friends.
Millie immediately turned to your mum, brother and Leah and said they should go in first. Your mum and brother insist that Millie and Leah go first and to take as much time as you need. The national teammates walk down the hallway and turn a corner to see your room number. Leah starts to walk but Millie doesn’t. It’s like her feet are frozen to the ground.
“It’s okay Mils, I’ve got you” Leah smiles at Millie and Millie knows she going to be okay.
Both girls enter the room and gasp at the state of you. Half shaved head, many IV tubes and countless stitches on you head and face. The girls took a seat next to you and they both want to say something but nothing comes out. Leah starts to say something to you but stops herself as she bursts into tears.
“You need to have some time with her. I’l be back in the waiting room okay?” Millie nods and hugs Leah before she leaves.
“Hey beautiful girl. Remember that time we went to Italy and we got gelato. Then you turned and split it all over that kid” Millie laughs through her tears and continues to tell you stories of your latest vacation to you.
“Y-you push me”
Millie’s eyes widened and moved closer to you. She looks at your face and your eyes open to reveal your beautiful y/e/c eyes Millie loves. She holds your cheek like it’s made of glass.
“Hey baby”
“You pushed me into the kid” Millie tries to remember for a brief second then laughs a little as the memory comes back.
“I missed you. What happened?”
Millie starts to explain what happened then asks if you want to see your family. Your family rush through the door, Leah coming through first. Your mum goes next to you and tells you how scared she was, your brother does the same.
“When can we go home?” You ask Millie, looking up at her.
“You have to stay in for a few more days, then we can go home”
“Hey Mills, how about we go and have a shower, get changed and come straight back?” Leah suggests as they are both still in their game uniform.
“No, I’m not leaving her” Millie protests. You put a hand on Millie’s and she looks over at you.
“Go Mills, I’ll be okay. Plus you stink a little” Millie rolls her eyes but ultimately gives in as she can’t say no to you.
“I’ll be right back. I love you”
“I love you more” Millie leans down and kisses you softly.
When Millie and Leah leave, you turn your head to your mum and she gives you a well known smile.
“You better keep her, she’s a good one”
“Yeah, she really is” You smile, as you watch two of the most important people in your life walk away.
I Like You - Part 2
Sadie Sink x Reader
Tumblr media
Part 1
Masterlist
“That shit was long.” I say as we walk out of the hall. “Well it is the longest season yet.” Millie says as I nod as I look up at what was a previously bright sky a now dark grayish color. I look back down at the script in my hands. “I am going to kill myself. How much screen time do I need.” I say as I flip back through the pages. “Oh shut up Y/N. You love it.” Noah says making me smile as I turn to face him and walk backwards. “I do. But you’re just mad you went from being the main character to a nobody, that cries every second of screentime he’s got.” I say as he does a tight lipped smile and flips me off. I smirk and he changes his expression to a pout. “Fuck off.” He whines as I laugh. “Don’t worry, you’ll have your time to shine when the duffers decide to kill you off for the season 5 finale.” I say making him roll his eyes. “I thought you loved Will.” Millie says making me turn back around and walk normally. “She does.” Finn says as he jogs over to us, slinging his arm over my shoulders. “Are we going to eat or what?” Gaten asks as he begins walking on the other side of me. “Well where’s Sadie and Caleb?” I ask as I look around, the whole cast being here except Sadie and Caleb. “They’re coming don’t worry. Caleb’s just buying us some time so we can hang out with you before Sadie steals you.” Finn says as he laughs pulling me to the car and holding the passenger door open for me. “Front seat? For me.” I ask placing a hand over my heart as I fake shock on my face. “Best seat for the best girl.” He says winking at me making me laugh as he shuts the door after me. “I thought i was the best girl?” Millie says from behind in between Noah and Gaten. “Sorry not sorry mills.” He says as he gets in the car and turns on the car and drives out of the trailer park.
Once we arrive Finn comes running to open my door. “M’lady.” He says holding his arm out. I laugh as I accept the arm and allow him to help me out. “What’s up with you Finn?” I ask making him chuckle as I look up to see the bright yellow sign flickering, struggling to stay on, one of the letters about to fall off and another letter with the lights off. “Cute.” I mutter and Millie’s laughter from behind me makes me turn to look at her. “It’s really good. Don’t judge.” She says as her and Noah walk past me. I turn to Gaten and Finn confused. “When did you guys come here?” I ask as I furrow my eyebrows. “First night we arrived.” Gaten says making me nod as we walk up the small steps to the door. “We agreed the next time we’d come would be the day you landed.” Finn says as he holds the door open to the small restaurant. I walk in looking around at the completely empty but old fashioned restaurant. “Is this part of set?” I ask as I look around making Gaten laugh. “Surprisingly it’s not. I was shocked too, believe me.” He says as I nod looking at the red booths and the red and white squared tiled floor. I look around until I notice Caleb and Sadie talking in a booth. Mostly Caleb as she didn’t look very interested in what he was saying. As if Sadie had powers and somehow magically sense my presence she turns her head in my direction locked eyes with me. Her eyes widen as she looks at me. “Y/N!” She yells as she stands up and smiles calling me over as she walks out the booth walking over to me as I meet her halfway. “I can’t believe I fell for it.” Sadie says putting her hand on her head as she rolls her eyes. I smile widely as I understand what she’s talking about. “He told me that Matt and Ross needed me.” She says elaborating a bit more. “And then he told me that it was Shawn instead. I’m so dumb.” She continues before finally looking at me. “So what did you get?” She asks as she looks at the screen with the menu. “I feel like burgers.” I say as I stare at the burger menu. “I might get a meal. I’m pretty hungry.” I say as she nods, waiting in line with me as all the others are now sitting at the booth. Once I order we walk back to the booth. “Oh, looks like that’s full.” I say as I begin to take a seat on the nearby 2 person table. “We can make room, they’re not animals.” Millie says as she looks at the boys making them nod in agreement and begin squishing themselves against each other to make room for the two of us. Then out of nowhere Noah barks. “I take that back.” Millie says as she leans away from him and leans back onto Calebs shoulder as Millie stares at Noah disgusted. “So are you guys excited for filming this season?” I ask as they all nod. “I think it might be the best one yet.” Gaten says as I nod agreeing with him. “I think it’s the worst one yet.” Noah comments as he raises a hand to speak. “Why?” Caleb asks as he stares at him confused. “He’s got barely any screentime.” Millie says as I look up at her and laugh as she smiles knowing she stole it from me earlier. “I think it’s the best season yet.” Sadie comments making us turn to her. “She’s thinking that because all eyes on her.” Noah says making us all laugh. “That was a good one, I’ll give you that Noah.” I say making him smile with pride. “Thank you.” He says trying to bow seated as the waiters bring the food to our table. “Thank you.” We all say in unison as they leave our table.
“Goodnight.” I say as wave goodbye to the others as Sadie guides me to my trailer. “Look we’re right next to eachother.” Sadie says as she points at the two trailers side by side. “You coming in or what?” I ask as I stare at Sadie who’s standing at the bottom of the steps and hold the door for her as she walks in. “Where are my pyjamas.” I say as place my bag on the bed and begin to unpack. Once I find my oversized shirt and pants I walk to the bathroom and close the door chucking them on. “I missed you so much.” Sadie says as I walk out of the bathroom. “I missed you too. But majority of our screentime were together. Makes up for it, right? And we have to be together for press. I’ll literally die if we don’t.” I say as take a seat on the spinny chair by the desk as I look at the starfish named Sadie on my bed. She stays silent for a few seconds before speaking up. “After filming do you wanna go out tomorrow?” She asks making me pick up the schedule that was left in my room. “Filming is all day, most days.” I say as my eyes widen looking at the sheets. “What days do we have off?” She asks sitting up. “Friday filming ends early but I have a full day of on Saturday and Sunday. Well that’s my schedule at least.” I say as I smile happy with the days I have off. She groans as she flops back down onto the bed. “I thought you loved filming?” I say as she sighs. “I do it’s just that I like spending time with you more.” She says as she stares at the ceiling. I get up and take a seat on the bed and look down at her. “Most of our scenes are together. What’s you point?” I ask smiling down at her. She rolls her eyes and looks back up at me. “Finee.” She agrees lightly hitting the arm I was leaning on. “It’s just that I also want to hang out with you after filming.” She says making me furrow my eyebrows. “We can? We finish filming at 9.” I say as I look at her confused. “Yeah but we need to sleep.” She says making me raise my eyebrows. “You need to sleep. I don’t.” I say teasing her as she hits my arm again. “Isn’t it past you bedtime anyway?” I ask as I look at my wrist. “Its practically 10:25.” I say looking down at her with a smile before putting my hand on her head to assist me get up. “Hey, what was that for.” She pouts as she sits up once more. “Do you want some chocolate?” I ask holding up a pack. “I can’t.” She says as she raises an eyebrow at me. “Why not? It’s vegan.” I say taking a bite out of the bar in my hands. “Really?” She asks as I hold it out to her. “Yeah, I bought you one, not sure if you’ll like it though.” I say as she takes it out of my hand and takes a bite. “That’s… that’s actually… really good.” She says pausing as she chews. “You’re welcome.” I say as I smile walking back to the bed taking a seat and throwing the blanket over me. “Get under.” I say as she looks up at me before rolling over to get off the bed and slide under the blanket next to me. “It’s pretty cold.” I say as she comes close next to me. “Do you want to watch a movie?” I ask a split second before she yawns. “Alright bedtime then.” I say as I put my MacBook down under the bed. “No, no. I can… I can stay up.” She says as she yawns in between making me laugh. “Sure Sades. You got a big day tomorrow. Sleep.” I say as put my hand on her face and dragging it down her face to close her eyes. “Fine, but not because I’m tired. Only because tomorrow is a busy day.” She lies as I grab my headphones laughing. “Sure, sure.” I say as I begin to play a movie.
The sunlight shining in my face makes me groan as I pick my phone off the floor to check the time. “6:30? Piss off.” I mutter as I put the phone down and turn the other way to see Sadie’s face centimeters away from mine. “Fuck.” I whisper as I feel her move her arm over my waist and pull herself slightly closer to me. The sunlight on her face makes it clear to see her. I smile as I stare at her half asleep. “Kill me.” I mutter as I look down at her lips. After contemplating whether I should stare at her like a creep or go back to sleep. I choose sleep, preferring her not to wake up to me staring at her.
The sound of a camera and 2 voices makes me open an eyelid because the sun was shining even brighter than before. “Shit!” “I told you to turn it off! You’re going to wake them up!” Two voices whisper yell to each other. That’s when I notice the two giggling devils. “The hell are you two doing here?” I ask raising a hand to rub my eye as I stare at Noah and Millie in my trailer. “You two are so cute.” Millie says smiling widely making me furrow my eyebrows and look to my side to see Sadie snuggled into my side and my arm spread out across the bed as the top of her head rests on it. My eyes open widely as I notice her arm draped over my stomach holding me close to her. “Why didn’t we get invited for the sleepover. I want some action.” Noah pouts before snickering after Millie slaps him and scolds him. “What time is it?” I ask as I look at them. “Time to get up.” Noah says making Millie roll her eyes. “You are such a child in the morning.” Millie says as she laughs looking at us once more before walking out pulling Noah behind her. As they walk out I pick up my phone. “Ah shit.” I mumble as we need to go get breakfast with the rest of the cast. “Sades. Time to get up.” I say as lightly tap her shoulder with my arm that’s trapped under her head. “Yeah yeah. A few minutes.” She says as she uses the hand around my waist to pull herself closer to me. “Sadie, you’re practically sniffing my armpit.” I say as I smile making her groan as she rolls away from me. “I like your deodorant.” She comments as she smiles tiredly at me. “Come on. We gotta get ready for breakfast.” I say as I get out of bed and pull her out with me. “You gonna get ready in my trailer? Or you wanna go back to yours?” I ask as hold her up so she doesn’t go back to sleep on my bed. “Or do you wanna bring all your shit here?” I ask making her smile as she slightly opens her eyes. “I really like the third option.” She says making me laugh. “We’ll move your shit here later tonight if you’re ready in time for breakfast okay?” I say making her nod as she slowly walks to the bathroom to wash her face.
pairing: Ona Batlle x f!Reader
warnings: does the fact that i absolutely hate the way this turned out count?
word count: 1982
summary: you’re very busy people watching others, too busy to notice that ona is watching you
a/n: based off the song, people watching by conan gray
People Watching
You sit quietly in the corner of the locker room, observing as once again, Millie and Ella start singing some pop song. It gets even louder once Tooney successfully convinces her best friend to join in.
A little smile grows on your face as Ona gets nudged by Alessia, the Spanish girl chuckling as she refuses the forward’s attempt to draw her into their chaos.
Ona shakes her head at Alessia and your heart skips a beat as the grin on her face widens.
She looks beautiful and you duck your head blushing slightly and cursing yourself for your gay panic.
For the rest of the time in the locker room, you focus on reorganising the contents of your bag and maybe just occasionally sneaking glances in Ona’s direction.
That wasn't funny but she laughed so hard, she almost cried
They're counting months they've been together, almost 49
He's making fun of how she acted 'round the holidays
She wears a ring but they tell people that they're not engaged
They met in class for metaphysical philosophy
He tells his friends, "I like her 'cause she's so much smarter than me"
They're having talks about their futures until 4:00 a.m.
And I'm happy for them
Once again you’re sitting quietly, this time in a cafe, listening to the couple at the table next to you. They’re telling their friends how they met and their love story is so sweet it makes your heart ache.
Would you ever have your own story like that?
Looking up from your coffee, you immediately notice the way the boy is looking at his girl like she had hung the stars in the sky.
Another question preoccupies you as you go back to your coffee.
Would anyone ever love you like that?
But I wanna feel all that love and emotion
Be that attached to the person I'm holding
Someday, I'll be falling without caution
But for now, I'm only people watching
People watching was probably the activity you did most. Most times you’d find yourself doing it unconsciously. You were shy and often anxious, especially so around others. This shyness resulted in you being near silent around your teammates, particularly the louder ones.
You liked Millie, you really did. She was really nice to you and had helped you settle down in Manchester when you had first signed for them. Sometimes though, her loudness scared you a tiny bit and you just wished she would give you some prior warning before she created a loud bang.
I'm only looking just to live through you vicariously
I've never really been in love, not seriously
I had a dream about a house behind a picket fence
Next one I choose to trust, I hope I use some common sense
Very rarely, you envied her. Millie and her girlfriend had such a strong relationship despite how far apart they lived and whenever she talked about Rachel, you could see the way her eyes lit up. She loved her girlfriend, anyone could see that.
Would you ever find a love like that?
You couldn’t help thinking that if you could be as confident and outgoing as Millie, you could tell Ona about your feelings for her.
The brunette was something or rather someone unexpected. You came to Manchester solely to improve on your football, you never thought that you would find someone like her who would give you another reason to stay at the club.
It was entirely unexpected, Manchester United signing the cutest full back to help you and Millie with the backline.
Ona was warm, like the Spanish sunshine she loved so much. She was sweet, often offering to stay back after trainings if you wanted some extra practice.
She too was quiet but only at first. She would sit beside you in the bus, on the bench during games and in the locker room. Softly, the Catalan would ask you for clarifications and the meanings of words she picked up from the conversations around the both of you.
Often, she would kiss your cheek in thanks for the answers and it always left you a blushing mess.
But I cut people out like tags on my clothing
I end up all alone but I still keep hoping
After she had a better understanding of English however, she talked more with your other teammates but still occasionally sat down beside you, enjoying the way your presence put her at ease.
Following an exhausting game that had ended in a tough loss, Ona silently sits beside you, leaning her head against your shoulder.
‘You okay?’ You whisper.
‘Mhm. Just need some time.’ She mumbles. A bad pass on her part had resulted in the goal that had sealed the loss and you knew that the full back was beating herself up about it.
You want to hold her hand but afraid that that would be too much, you settle for asking her if she wants a hug.
‘Really?’ The defeated expression on Ona’s face lifts and you open your arms to her.
‘Of course.’
She’s quick to let you wrap your arms around her and even quicker to reciprocate the embrace.
As Ona tucks her face into the side of your neck, you rub circles onto her back and make a promise to yourself that you would do your best not to push her away like you did to so many others before.
You didn’t trust easily and often found yourself pushing away people you deemed had become too close to you. With Ona, you were determined not to. It was safe for you to let her in, she wouldn’t hurt you. At least you really really hoped she wouldn’t.
I wanna feel all that love and emotion
Be that attached to the person I'm holding
Someday, I'll be fallin' without caution
But for now, I'm only people watching
You knew a lot of things about your teammates. A lot of things about the staff even. Things that not many would know because it wasn’t very obvious.
You knew that Ella and Alessia liked to go get their nails done at a place near their apartments, not because of their exceptional service but because they were friends with the staff.
You knew that Maria liked to walk her dog in the evening but on game days she preferred to do so in the morning because it soothed any anxieties or worries she had.
You knew that Hannah could play equally well as a right or left back but would rather play on the right because of a superstition she had. It was why you always let her be the right back whenever you were on the pitch with her.
You even knew that Janie, the team’s primary doctor liked a member of the groundskeeping team even though she never said anything because you had observed the way she would sneak glances at him while the team trained.
And Ona, you knew a lot about her. You knew that she always stepped onto the pitch with her right foot first. You knew that while she had chosen to pursue football as a career instead of ice skating, she still loved the latter sport because when she couldn’t sleep, she’d watch ice skating competitions under the blankets in the hotel beds.
You knew that though she had adapted very well to Manchester, she still struggled with the lack of physical affection. Spanish affection was very different from English affection and you tried your best to remedy that by giving her the occasional hug.
As much as you would have loved to hug her more often or maybe even kiss her just as you’d dreamed about, you made sure that none of your actions gave away the way you felt about her.
Cut people out like tags on my clothing
I end up all alone but I still keep hoping
I won't be scared to let someone know me
Life feels so monotone but I still keep hoping
If you weren’t so busy people watching others you’d see that Ona was always, always looking at you.
She was looking at you every chance she could. At recovery, at trainings, at team bondings, on the bus and even while she was talking to other teammates.
Half her mind was constantly on you.
She did always make sure to look away just as your gaze inevitably fell on her though.
The Spanish full back was almost certain that you liked her but she wanted you to be comfortable with her. She wanted you to be able to be at home with her, just as she was with you.
Sometimes though, she couldn’t resist giving you the tiniest hint that she liked you back.
Cut people out like tags on my clothing
I end up all alone but I still keep hoping
I won't be scared to let someone know me
Life feels so monotone but I still keep hoping
Hope. Hope is a four letter word and a feeling that you felt whenever you saw Ona. You kept on hoping and hoping that you would get your happy ending. That you would love someone and have them love you back. And that Ona would be the one for you.
For all of your people watching, you really could be quite blind.
The full back was making a TikTok with Mary and the smile on her face was perhaps the most beautiful thing you had ever seen.
Your gaze can’t help but be drawn to her and you were trying your best not to blatantly stare at her.
Ona however, already knew that you were watching her.
Looking up at just the right time, she catches your eye and winks. Winks to let you know that she knew you were watching her and that she didn’t mind.
You flush immediately, gaze darting to the grass which you proceed to look at like it was the most interesting thing you had ever seen.
Ona giggles, quickly finishing the TikTok with the goalie so that she can plonk herself down on the grass, next to you.
‘Hola.’ She greets cheerfully.
‘Hi.’ You mumble, not looking up because your face was still red.
‘You know that you’re kinda cute right?’
That causes you to look up, cheeks even redder than before.
‘I am?’
‘Yeah.’ Ona nods, a smile gracing her face.
The Spanish player chuckles and leans in to kiss your cheek before getting up, leaving a flustered you behind.
I wanna feel all that love and emotion
Be that attached to the person I'm holding
Someday, I'll be falling without caution
But for now, I'm only people watching
You were falling. This was your someday. You were falling without caution for Ona.
For Ona who had earned your trust, for Ona who had made you feel at home with her. For Ona who was now dozing off in your arms. For Ona who you were now attached to.
You missed her when she was away for national camps, missed her when you were injured and couldn’t travel with the United team even though it was only for two weeks.
You missed her simply when she wasn’t beside you.
You felt all that love and emotion for her. She was the love you had been hoping for, the love you had dreamt about. You were done with people watching because you no longer envied others. You had found a person who you were safe with. You could let her in because she would never hurt you.
It had taken you a while to get there but you had finally made it.
‘I love you. You know that right?’ Ona softly murmurs.
‘Yeah. I love you, you know that right?’ You ask back, in the same fashion.
Your girlfriend hums sleepily, cuddling closer into you.
‘I know.’
Spanish Translation:
hola - hi/hello
A little snippet from Best Part of Me. Featuring the Rake kids.
Especially for you, @tragiclyhip.
@youflickedtooharddamnit @secretaryunpaid @thebejeweledwatercat and anyone else who reads/supports
“It’s okay Tanny,” TJ assures him, and drops his brother’s hand in favour of pulling him into a hug; an arm around Tanner’s waist and a hand on the back of his head. “Don’t be scared. I’m here. It’ll be over soon.”
“You’re a very good big brother,” the man praises, a friendly smile curving his lips.
“Tanny gets scared easily,” TJ explains, fingers lightly combing through his twin’s hair. “It’s my job to protect him. ‘Cause I’m older.”
“You’re only older by six minutes,” Millie reminds him.
“It doesn’t matter how many minutes, I’m STILL older. So I have to protect him. He’s smaller because he was sick when we were in mommy’s tummy,” TJ explains to the older couple. “Because I was taking all the food for myself and he wasn’t getting enough. So when he was born, he had to be in the special nursery and have doctors and nurses take care of him. He didn’t get to come home for a long time. Right, mom?”
“Right,” she confirms, and runs a hand over his hair. “But not everyone needs to know our business.”
“I’m just explaining why we look the same in the face but not the body. I didn’t mean to take all the food. I didn’t know what I was doing. I wouldn’t have done it if I did. He’s my brother. Why would I hurt him like that?”
“Tyler, shhh. I’m sure these nice people don’t want to know every little detail. Shhh.”
“We were the first boys after daddy lost his first one. So it was extra special when we came along. Mommy says daddy really cried when he got to hold us.”
“Sorry,” Esme gives a sheepish smile. “He’s very social. He loves to meet people. And tell them his life story.”
“We’re here to see daddy,” TJ continues. “He got hurt at work.”
“The bad guys hurt him,” Millie adds. “Really, REALLY bad.”
“Okay, guys, that’s not something you need to tell everyone, alright? That’s enough.”
“He kills people,” TJ says. “Bad people. When he has to. To protect good people. Isn’t that awesome?”
“Tyler James…” Esme lightly and briefly places a hand over his mouth. “...enough, please.”
Ok that last post made me think about Trigun characters and Animal Crossing
Knives would have a perfectly curated town. Of course the museum is complete. He has every type of flower, but they're all sectioned off so the colors don't clash. He practices Villager Discrimination against ugly villagers. Bought Raymond on ebay. Surprisingly fond of Isabelle. Will time travel whenever he wants, for whatever reason he wants.
Lagato doesn't actually care about AC. He has a town for the sole purpose of getting fruit/items/etc. for Knives. When Knives got upset that he wasn't putting effort into his town, he decided to put an hour aside each day to properly decorate it like it's a part-time job. Still can't remember any of his villagers' names. Made his avatar have blue hair like him.
Vash has a super cute town. Doesn't usually let villagers move out because he loves them all. Sometimes he makes headcanons about villagers that they want to travel, and then he'll let them go so he's not "holding them back." Always attends KK's concerts. Cried a little at the first one. Not against time travel, but not motivated enough to use it usually. Will use it if he forgets a villager's birthday though. Always receiving stuff from Knives's town. Knives once attempted to force him to re-terraform his entire island because he didn't like it. This resulted in a serious fight. Always makes sure his character is gucci'd down to the socks.
Wolfwood says he only plays AC because the kids at the orphanage pester him to (but you know he finds it calming). He makes the goth, halloween-themed town with the edgy fake corpses in the basement. Never bothered to get all the flower types. Vash helped him get all the fruits though. Gets super pissed off when Redd sells him fake art. Uses a guide because convenience is king. Doesn't bother with time travel, too much effort. He plays pretty normally by himself, but when he goes to the kids' towns, he makes sure to trample all the flowers and hit all the townspeople with his net. If the kid starts crying though, he does his best to fix it; he doesn't actually like hurting their feelings. He never uses medicine to fix his face after getting attacked by bees.
Meryl was the first person to complete the main island "quest." She doesn't get why people time travel: doesn't that take away from the feeling of accomplishment when you complete it the good old-fashioned way? Did time travel once when she missed her favorite villager's birthday though. All her buildings are very sensibly located. Reloaded her island choices until she got the color of the airport she wanted and a layout with the town hall near the center. Terrified of tarantulas. The first time she got Tarantula Island, she accidentally closed the game without saving. Always has a cute, custom-designed outfit on.
Milly doesn't actually play AC very much. She time travels as she pleases, and as a result, her entire island has turned into an overgrown meadow. It gives Meryl and Isabella a heart attack. Brings gifts whenever she goes to her friends' islands. When she goes to Wolfwood's or vice versa, they spend the entire time hitting villagers. You know she's rocking that ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) face and the froggy outfit. Tarantula hunter supreme.
Roberto does not have a switch. Milly, his niece, begged him to try out her AC once though. He cut down trees until the bees came for him. He doesn't understand the appeal of this game.
Moving On
Tumblr media
A/N: This story was written for the January prompt of @hp-12monthsofmagic challenge
Bringing friends to the Burrow during the summer break was somewhat of a habit for the Weasley children, and yet, Charlie Weasley had never really been one to invite people over. That wasn’t because he didn’t have any people to bring, he simply preferred sticking to a small but eclectic circle of friends.
Lizzie Jameson was one of the exceptions. She was one of Charlie’s few regular guests at his home near Ottery St Catchpole, and Charlie would’ve been hard-pressed trying to think of a time when he wasn’t excited about his best friend’s stay.
This year, however, things were different. He had been looking forward to Lizzie’s arrival, he really had, but when the lively Hufflepuff girl Apparated into the Burrow’s front yard, Charlie wasn’t the one to greet her first. Before he had even risen from his chair in the kitchen, his mother had rushed past him, pulling a bashfully smiling Lizzie into a smothering hug.
“I haven’t seen you in forever, dear,” Molly Weasley cried out, cupping Lizzie’s face with both her hands and squeezing it ever so slightly. “Won’t you look at that, what a beautiful young witch you have become! And what a nice tan you got yourself! You must tell me all about your trip, Charlie was so frugal with the details. Did you get my birthday gift? I really hope you liked the chocolate Quaffle.”
Over his mother’s incessant stream of chatter, Lizzie raised an eyebrow at Charlie.
“I thought you made that one?” she mouthed, to which Charlie responded with a shrug.
“I came up with the idea.”
He was happy that he and Lizzie would finally get to spend some time together. At school, catching her alone was tricky; they were in different houses, and Lizzie had a plethora of friends and other extra-curricular activities to occupy her time. They saw each other during classes and their work for Professor Kettleburn, but even those Lizzie had come to leave in a rush more often than not.
Charlie knew the reason for it, of course. Lizzie now had a boyfriend, after all.
He felt his excitement fade as he listened to his mother and his younger brothers, who had stormed into the kitchen upon hearing Lizzie’s voice, interrogating her on her boyfriend Orion’s shiny new career as rookie Chaser for the Montrose Magpies. Lizzie answered all of their questions patiently and with a proud smile on her face; for some reason, she seemed unable to even stop gushing about his new jersey.
“The old ones were so boring, but this season, they’re stunning. Trust me, you’ll love them.”
Charlie raised his eyebrows fractionally. “I thought you were a Catapults gal, Snidget.”
Lizzie responded with a laugh. “They’ll have to share my love with the Magpies now, I guess.”
“So much for loyalty,” Charlie muttered to himself. He was surprised at how snappy he sounded, but a strange sort of irritation had taken hold of him ever since the topic had turned to Quidditch. Lizzie seemed to share the notion; her brows knit together in a frown, but before she could reply, Charlie’s younger brother Fred drew her attention.
“Don’t listen to him,” he smirked, his brown eyes flashing. “He’s just jealous he only gets to handle dragons instead of Snitches.”
“Others chase undying fame, Charlie only scary lizards,” Fred’s identical twin George sniggered.
“Chasing scary lizards is a perfectly acceptable career choice if you ask me,” Lizzie jumped to Charlie’s defence with a stern look at them both. “And it’s not like Charlie isn’t his own kind of famous either. I have a lot of friends who are quite partial to him, actually.”
Knowing where this was headed, Charlie motioned for Lizzie to stop, but it was too late. His mother leaned closer with sparkling eyes.
“What kind of friends? Girls?”
“Mum…”
Not minding him, Lizzie giggled in reply. “Yes, actually. There’s Janet, and Alexa, Elle, Madison, Rose, Millie… oh, and Ava.”
At that, Charlie frowned. “Who’s Ava?”
“I’m not sure you know her. I only met her properly last year.”
“What house is she in?”
“Ravenclaw. You might know her from Potions, actually. She’s rather petite, blonde, wickedly clever. She’s top of… well, almost all classes, really.”
“Does she like dragons and Quidditch?” the twins asked innocently, elbowing each other in the sides.
“Sadly, no and no.”
Charlie thought all of this rather odd. “And she told you she wanted to meet me?”
A faint dusting of colour rose to Lizzie’s cheeks. “She didn’t exactly say it, but I think the two of you would get along well. I can introduce you if you like?”
“Thanks, no need,” Charlie said abruptly and rose to his feet. He left behind a stunned silence as he walked through the kitchen door into the garden.
As he crossed the garden towards the hedge separating the Burrow from the fields beyond, his thoughts circled around Lizzie and how strangely angry her behaviour made him. Was it too much to ask to not talk about her relationship for more than five minutes? Or his lack thereof, for that matter? There was more to life than dating and all the other things that seemed to consume all of Lizzie’s waking thoughts lately. When had she changed so much?
When he reached the broom shed on the edge of the Burrow’s grounds, he unlocked the door and stepped inside. The dark, dry heat hit him like a Bludger to the face. He looked around. There were gardening tools, discarded furniture, and old plant pots littering the shelves and floors, and in a rack by the wall, the ragged broomsticks of the Weasley family were stored. Charlie took one of them out and put it back again, sitting down on a dusty sunchair instead.
He was annoyed with Lizzie, and his mother, and Fred and George, but mostly, he was annoyed with himself. It wasn’t Lizzie’s fault that he was irritable, and she had only meant well.
But what was so wrong about wanting to pursue his passion? Why did everyone always question him? His internship with the dragonologists in Wales during the first half of the summer was the first step to the career of his dreams, but instead of support, all Charlie received from his family and friends were patronising remarks.
The door creaked open, and a shadow blocked the light streaming into the shed. Convinced it was Lizzie, Charlie sullenly said, “If you want to play Quidditch, I’m sorry. I can’t provide you with balancing and broom surfing.”
“Oh, neither can I,” said the voice of his older brother Bill. “I’d break something even trying.”
Charlie’s shoulders relaxed as Bill sat on an upturned cauldron across from him. “What do you want?”
“I heard you stormed out on Mum. Do you want to tell me what happened?”
Nothing,” Charlie shook his head. When Bill didn’t reply, the words suddenly came tumbling from his mouth. He told him about Lizzie, her repeated attempts at pitching him to various of her friends, and how strangely disappointed Charlie had been from the moment she had set foot into the Burrow’s kitchen.
“I don’t know,” he finished with a helpless shrug. “I just don’t understand why she’s changed so much.”
“You have gotten older since you first met. People change when they grow up, and so do their friendships.”
“That’s not it,” Charlie insisted. “It only started after she got with Orion.”
Bill made a contemplative humming sound. “Is that why you’re so upset? Because Lizzie has a boyfriend now?”
“Why would I?”
“You’re not jealous then?”
“Absolutely not,” Charlie said vehemently. He paused. “Should I be?”
“Well, is there anything on your part?”
“Why does everybody keep asking me that?”
“You’ve always been close. More than close, even.” Bill shrugged. “You wouldn’t be the first person to fall in love with their best friend. It happens. I mean, you even kissed.”
“We… wait, how do you know that?”
Bill’s lips curved into a knowing smile. “There’s no secrets at the Burrow.”
“Okay, but even if we kissed, it doesn’t change anything. I don’t have feelings for Lizzie,” Charlie insisted stubbornly. More quietly, he added, “Or at least, that’s what I thought.”
“You don’t think that anymore?”
“I don’t know,” Charlie said, frowning to himself. “Everybody thinks there’s more to us, so what if they’re right? What if there is?”
Bill was silent for a long time. “Do you remember the plush Erumpent I got for Christmas when we were small?”
“No.”
“Mum and Dad got me an Erumpent and you a dragon. You loved that dragon. You took it with you anywhere.”
“Sounds about right.”
“People liked the Erumpent better, though. They kept asking you if you weren’t sad that it was way cuter than your dragon, and eventually, you believed them.” He paused. “Do you see where I’m going with this?”
“No, because dragons clearly are superior to Erumpents.”
“You changed your mind after people told you how to feel often enough.” Bill’s voice softened. “I know you want to please everyone, but you shouldn’t let that decide how you feel about something. That’s for you to decide, and only you. And if someone’s not happy about it, that’s their problem, not yours.”
“If anyone thinks Erumpents are better than dragons, they have enough of a problem as it is.”
With a laugh, Bill rose to his feet. “Think about it. Mum says dinner’s at six.”
Charlie stayed in the broom shed long after Bill had left. Their conversation ran through his mind over and over again. Bill suggesting that he was jealous was ridiculous. Why would he be jealous?
Jealous. He let the thought sit with him, gave it a little room to breathe. It felt strange.
He remembered when he and Lizzie had come into this same broom shed during their Christmas break a couple of years ago. They had hidden from the twins and had found themselves under a mistletoe in the doorway. It was the only time they had ever kissed, but it had been Charlie’s first; both their firsts, in fact. Looking back, he wasn’t sure if the memory felt good or awkward.
Bill’s words kept Charlie occupied over the next couple of days. He spent his time with Lizzie and his family, trying to put his issues aside, but they never quite left him alone.
By the end of the week, Charlie still didn’t know how to feel. Was he jealous of Lizzie’s relationship with Orion? Wasn’t he? The idea felt foreign to him, as if his mind refused to wrap around the concept of Lizzie being anything but his friend.
The summer in Devon was kind, and the Weasley children made the best of it, spending their days in the garden from early in the morning. A pleasant breeze stirred the leaves of the trees in the orchard, and the scent of grass and honeysuckle hung heavy in the air. Charlie sat on the steps in front of the kitchen door, watching Lizzie playing tag with Ron and Ginny, an affectionate smile playing around his lips.
Maybe he and Lizzie could have been more, he thought to himself. Maybe, if things had been different. If she hadn’t fallen in love with Orion, or if Charlie had known what he wanted from her when there had still been a chance.
Ultimately, it was what it was. And that, Charlie decided, was perfectly fine.
Further out in the garden, Ron and Ginny had left Lizzie to her own devices. She sat in the shadow of an old honeysuckle tree and was reading the letter she had received from Orion the other day. A soft smile formed on her features, the happiness radiating off her so strong that Charlie thought he could feel its warmth even from where he was sitting. It was then that something within him settled. If Lizzie smiled like that, he was satisfied, no matter who or what was the cause of it.
“Would you look at that, George?” Fred grinned as he slumped on the stairs next to Charlie.
“Someone’s in love,” George sang, suddenly appearing on Charlie’s other side. In unison, the twins added, “Go on, make your move!”
Charlie stifled a sigh. “I’m not in love.”
“Then why are you staring?”
“I’m not staring.”
“You are staring,” Fred and George sniggered, fluttering their eyelashes and making kissing noises.
Ignoring the twins’ wolf whistling, Charlie rose to his feet and made his way over to Lizzie, who looked up from her letter with an apologetic expression.
“Sorry about them,” she glared in the direction of Charlie’s cackling brothers. “I told them to knock it off, but you know how they are.”
“It’s fine,” Charlie waved her off. He nodded at the parchment in Lizzie’s hands. “How’s Orion?”
“Are you polite, or do you really want to know?”
“Why wouldn’t I want to know?”
Lizzie suddenly looked sheepish. “I never thought you cared much.”
“Don’t take it personally, Puffskein. I had a lot on my mind.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“It’s fine.”
Lizzie tilted her head. “You know you can talk to me, right?”
A smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, Charlie nodded. “I do.”
Slowly, the smile returned to Lizzie’s face as she tucked her letter away and told him about Orion’s first days in Montrose. Her eyes were flashing with excitement, and the dappled light falling through the canopy above them made her hair look like dark honey. She did look pretty, smiling like that, and Charlie wondered whether there really wasn’t more to the thought.
The simple answer was no, there wasn’t. Lizzie was happy, and that was all he needed to know.
“Say, that friend of yours,” he said when she was done with her recount, “the one you mentioned the other day. Tell me about her.”
A knowing smile formed on Lizzie’s features. “Which one?”
Charlie searched his brain for any of the names she had mentioned and said the first that came to his mind.
“Uhm, Ada.”
“You mean Ava?”
“Yeah, Ava. Tell me about Ava.”
these r fun so i will do more. request things and i’ll do them lol.
helluva boss characters’ reactions to their s/o saying “i love you” for the first time! i’ll make more in the future if you all like this one.
blitzø:
“oh. um. you said what now?”
doesn’t know how to handle this. this poor guy believes he is ultimately worthless and undeserving of anything positive. so you saying this… was a surprise, to say the least.
it takes him a minute, but he does say it back. it makes him tear up a little. he really isn’t used to this, but it’s okay, because you can learn together!
stolas:
omgomgomgomg he is SO HAPPY.
he literally freaks out for about five minutes before actually returning to his senses and saying it back.
“did you just say what— you— well— ahem. i love you too, dearest.”
this man’s face is so red the entire time. it’s actually pretty endearing. he’s craved love forever, since he never got it from his arranged marriage, so by god is he eating your words up rn.
striker:
*blinks*
“…how and why?”
yeah, so it takes a minute to settle in. striker is sort of absorbed in his bad boy aesthetic and therefore believes everyone would be afraid of him, or expect him to he invulnerable. he’s actually relieved that you said it first, because now he can drop the facade and actually be with you.
“well, i’ll be a son of a gun, sweet pea. you’ve got some interesting tastes. i share the sentiment, though.”
you’d better believe the hat is comin off for the cowboy hat-hidden kiss.
it takes him a little to learn how to say it back. he’s still sort of stuck in that cold exterior. but you can warm him up no problem!
stella:
(seriously): “it’ll pass.”
moxxie:
“OMGILOVEYOUTOO. I DIDN’T THINK I’D HEAR YOU SAY IT, BUT YOU’RE SAYING IT, AND I’M JUST SO HAPPY, I JUST-“
he’s going to go on a lil ramble because he is so elated. he might even sing about it.
he gives you a kiss on your cheek and smiles ecstatically. “i love you too, so, so much.”
he is so sincere with it. so in love.
millie:
“well, i love you too, baby!”
she’ll kiss you and hold you super close, probably going in for a nice cuddle sesh.
she is really happy that you said it, even if she seems casual at the time.
she feels like she found the right person and wants to settle down with you in the future, but tries not to get too carried away with that thought.
loona:
she acts like it isn’t a big deal and says it back nonchalantly, but it is. a big ass deal.
loona grew up having no one to love her, no one to care about her; she was viewed as a pet to be sold and treated with no respect.
until blitz took her in, and even then, we see how she acts around blitz. she believes she’s undeserving of the parental love he provides her, so it would be the same scenario with romantic love.
overtime, she’d probably start to understand how to handle it. but the first time her s/o says it, she probably cries when no one is looking.
chaz:
alr we know this guy is a fuck boy but he did date both moxxie and millie, so i think he does know how to love? just not well.
probably feels like a jackass deep down for screwing them both over the way he did, especially moxxie. he probably thinks he’s not worthy of being trusted by someone again, so he just hides it all beneath the f boi attitude.
however, when you say it, his entire demeanor shifts for a second. at first, he doesn’t believe he heard you correctly. then you say it again, and he visibly just. softens? like he doesn’t feel the need to act like a total idiot for once?
“i, uh… i love you too, babes!” and then the f boi attitude returns after that small moment of shock. he’s like, “i knew you’d say it at some point, who could resist me?”
verosika:
she would be a little stunned. she’s a succubus, after all; she feeds off of lust, not love. it’s not a concept she’s familiar with.
she’d look at you very flirtatiously, as if you just said some sort of magic words she’d been hoping to hear from someone one day (even if she’d never admit it.)
“love you too. let’s go to a club.”
y’all get crunk and make out, the end <3
Mel's 2023 Reads 🎉🎉Tier List🎉🎉
Tumblr media
F Tier
I would consider this tier the You Sucked Tier
These books all disappointed me in major ways. Some were just two short and underdeveloped whilst Insurgent was just a crime on humanity. It committed Character assassination badly and really underplayed abuse.
I was not the audience for the Leia book as its clearly for kids who aren't old enough too watch the Star Wars films.
Honestly I've had a pretty decent year F Tier is thankfully been minimal.
D Tier
I would consider this the Very Underwhelming Tier.
Sorry Marvel fans the Spider-Gwen comic would be higher if I didn't start with issue 5. It was cool okay I saw it at universal and went mine!! I also apologise to Good Omens fans. As a huge fan of the show I just didn't enjoy it. It works a lot better as a TV show. It was too crowded and I wish similar to the High Republic that there was individual pov chapters.
Allegiant I'm suprised I enjoyed it more then Insurgent but it didn't character assassinate Tris character but instead had weird new characters because the villians in the last book were defeated. I cried and the ending so therefore it belongs in D Tier. Old As Time was the most disappointing out of all of the Disney Twisted Tales I was expecting more. Some really good ideas that weren't fleshed out properly. I also found Belle really unlikeable in the first half of the book. I also wanted more Enchantress, her being Belles Mum was fascinating. Would still recommend though it has a beautiful message.
Again not bad for being one of the lowest tiers.
C Tier
I would consider this tier the Enjoyable But With Huge Flaws Tier.
The two books here I enjoyed but have too many major flaws holding them back. I'm suprised that there aren't more but then again 2023 has been a great reading year so I shouldn't.
Look I'm a new to the World of FNAF so I may not be able to accept weirdness. I also accept and respect The Creator didn't expect his game to be popular and as a result is new to writing but the second Fazbear Fright Book Fetch whilst improving on Into The Pits flaws had its own flaws to the point I couldn't put it further. Don't be angry FNAF fans.😰
I adored the Bullet Train movie and was super excited when I found out that it was a novel originally. But the outdated language, highly visible fatphobia and transphobia meant I couldn't put this any higher. I don't care the year it was published, call me a Snowflake but as a Trans Nonbinary Plush Sized person I do not want to read stories that mock my existence, so it's going in C tier. Still a really good story though.
I'm happy that most of my 41 reads ended up in B, A and S Tier
B Tier
I would consider this the Loved It But Could Have Been Better Tier.
Only six books in this tier again it's very surprising how many books have dodged this tier. I loved also this books but they had wasted potential and could have been better. They definitely would have been in A and S tier if they were.
I hope FNAF and Star Wars fans aren't angry at me but Darth Plagueis and Into The Pit absolutely deserve to be in B Tier. I loved Darth Plagueis as my first legends novel but the pacing was garbage fire. I would have much preferred a Trilogy where Book 1 is Plagueis's Backstory and Training With Darth Tenerbous till he kills him. Book 2 is Plagueis Grooming Palpatine to be his apprentice and then Book 3 takes place a few years before and then during Phantom Menace. It would have made the book feel less like 3 books squished into one. As for Into The Pit well, all three protagonists we're insufferable especially Millie in Count The Ways and the stories as a whole are to vague for me. The ending of Into The Pit had me scratching my head. I'm hoping I have a better time with the Tales Series.
As for the comics I haven't even Read Phase 2 yet so I was way too lost to properly enjoy The High Republic Adventures it also in genuine felt way to short. I loved Maz and Dexters appearances though. 2024 is looking to be the year I delve more into Doctor Who extended media with Big Finish having their first fifty stories free on Spotify but 2023 was a good start. Seventh Doctor comic was a pick up from the library and it was good but it also felt way too overcrowded with characters so in B Tier it goes.
I will come back to Plagueis someday and see how it goes but for now I'm super happy with my decisions.
A Tier
I would consider this the Amazing But Not Peak Tier. All the stories I really liked but they just missed a single step preventing it from being S Tier. Nine stories again which shocks me as it shows how generous I am.
Again hoping that fans of these novels are meant. I loved seeing my favourite prequel film turned into a Shakespearian play but unfortunately but unfortunately the source materials flaws stop this from being rated higher. It has however got me excited to read the orginal Trilogy Shakespeare plays.
Would have loved to put The Story Book Of Legends higher as well as it was very enjoyable and brought back alot of nostalgia for me involving Ever After High as it was basically my childhood but the world building is very nonchalant. It feels like if I hadn't been a fan of the orginal show I would have been dreadfully confused. I hope the next two stories in the Trilogy are less alienating when I get to them.
Bloodline and Spider-Man Hostile Takeover are definitely gonna be the most controversial. I loved Bloodline as a Leia Stan but I do not love Disney assassinating Leia and Han's relationship be like Satine and Obi-Wan. Leia even gave up being a jedi for her family. I just don't think that Han would listen to Leia and stay away whilst she's going through so much. Han would never be satisfied with only a video call. As for Hostile Takeover, Liss really messed up with one of the characters Anika she felt tropey and stale, only there to be Peter's over love interest option. Hostile Takeover is such a good Spider-Man story but Anika really let's down this book for me. Echo was written brilliantly I don't understand why Anika couldn't have been as well.
Congratulations to the books in A tier for coming very closer to S Tier though. 🎉🎉
S Tier
Welcome to the Peak Writing Tier it feels like I just give books the S Tier too generously but trust me when I say that these books have absolutely earned it. These books blew me away and are the reason why I've had to do a Tier list instead of a ranking. I'd mention all the books if I could but then this post would go on for hours so I'm just gonna mention three.
Claudia Gray dominated this year and has honestly become one of my favourite authors. The way she writes Leia is so masterful and awesome. Leia Princess Of Alderaan shined and hugely redeemed Holdo as a character for me. However as usual The High Republic lands on top as usual. Into The Dark By Claudia Gray blew my mind in all the best ways possible. It gave me a rollercoaster of emotions and I enjoyed the smaller cast of characters alot. Each character arc felt well done and hugely earnt. As a Star Wars fan I can say your missing out if you don't check out The High Republic in my opinion its so much better than the sequels cos all the writers actually sat down and talked with eachother laying out a clear plan. Peak Star Wars with amazing representation.
I got to go to my first authors talk this year and it was amazing. The Many Half Lived Lives Of Sam Sylvester is a book I wish I could have shipped off to younger Mel who had been bullied in High School for their Autistic traits and was so confused about their identity. Maya MacGregor is such a lovely person and a great author it was a privilege to meet them. They really did the queer Autistic community the representation we deserved. And their next book which I won an arc copy of was just as good. I will be following more of their stories in the future they deserve the hype.
Finally When Our Worlds Collided was an emotional book that brought out the rage in me. I hope this book gets put on the GCSE English curriculum and replaces the harmful stuff such as Of Mice And Men. As a lighter skinned biracial person I was heartbroken realising the struggles and injustices Black teens might face in the UK. I loved Chantelle, Jackson and Marc and how they managed to come together through tragedy and help eachother through their battles. So glad that I impulsively bought this July 2022. Everyone needs to read this especially if you are White. Read diversely people it's important.
Conclusion
Overall 2023 was a great reading year I'm excited to try dip into more nonfiction and fiction in 2024. I'm also listening to Doctor Who Big Finish this year which means my 2024 tier list will certainly be larger next year.
Here are my storygraph and goodreads if you want to follow me.
video love letter
Tumblr media
A/N: hi hi hi! this is a little one-shot i wrote after watching Free Guy. for reference, my s/i is a musician who writes tracks for Soonami Games.
Ship: Keys x Olive (s/i)
Summary: Neither Keys nor Olive had ever said anything aloud about their affection for one another, but Millie could see it plain as day.
Millie watches, entranced, as Olive grins and rests her chin on Keys’ shoulder. The broadcast he’s pulled up on his computer shows their former boss throwing a temper tantrum in front of a slew of cameras, shoving at the microphones that interviewers begin pushing his way. She can hear the pair giggling.
“... embattled Soonami game founder Antwan Hovachelik finds himself in the crosshairs.” The reporter on screen continues. With each word Millie can feel her chest growing lighter. She’d been taught her whole life not to wish suffering on others, to be kind and feel empathy, and here she was, a minute away from grabbing the bottle of Chardonnay she kept in the cabinets and making a toast to Antwan’s tears.
The trio had been dumb when they’d sold their souls to Soonami games back in the day. Millie and Keys, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, signing away the rights to a game they’d poured their hearts and souls into, and Olive naively following at their heels when Antwan had purred at her to hand over her recording masters to Soonami Enterprises. She didn’t know Antwan, she’d said, but if her best friend and her at-the-time girlfriend trusted him enough, she should too, right?
And so she’d given her express consent for the company to use, change, and sell any and all music she created for Free City. Without any notice necessary. She’d created a beautiful tracklist of 18 songs, some short catchy ditties, some long, synth-driven beats that she’d spent hours picking apart. The first time she listened to them in Free City, all chopped up and remixed with a strong EDM bassline, she’d cried like a baby. Millie had felt so bad she’d thrown up.
“Crosshairs,” Keys says thoughtfully. “He’s in the crosshairs and embattled.” Olive laughs and knocks her forehead affectionately against the side of Keys’ head. He’s an enigma, their best friend. The same guy who cries at the end of every predictable romcom can hold a grudge like no other person she’s ever met. Millie can tell, just by his tone of voice, that he’s going to hate Antwan with his whole being until the day he dies. Maybe after that, too.
Millie sighs, though she’s smiling. “We’re too busy to gloat.” She nudges Olive as she says it, knowing she’s about to join in.
“Speaking of busy,” Mouser says over the sounds of Antwan’s cries of victimization. “We just doubled the amount of unique visitors we can handle.” He leans on a nearby router, looks over the trio like he can’t believe what he’s saying. “It’s amazing, who’d have thought that so many people would just want to watch video game characters instead of shoot at them?”
Olive’s nose crinkles, the glint of her lip gloss catching in the low light as she pretends to think. Millie shares the look, and Keys joins in soon after. “Oh yeah, we did.” Keys corrects, and Olive lifts her head from his shoulder to exchange a hi-five with him.
“Alright, alright, let’s get back to it,” Millie interrupts. She seats herself at her desk, opens up the file for Free Life, and is about to slide her headphones on when she hears it.
“You’re so cute when you brag.”
It’s Olive’s voice, sweet as honey off the comb and followed by the sound of skin on fabric- she’d patted his arm. Then there’s the sound of her tiny white shoes on the hardwood floor, and her plopping down on the couch where she usually does her writing. Millie whirls around at breakneck speed, eager to see if this is finally, finally happening.
Keys and Olive have known each other almost as long as they’d been alive. As recounted to her by Olive in college, they met at summer camp in sixth grade when a boy pushed Keys out of a tree and broke his glasses. Olive had tried fixing them with glitter glue and a little pink bandaid, and the pair were inseparable ever since. They were pen pals all through middle and high school, only seeing each other on weekends and holidays and summers, until their mutual acceptance to MIT brought them together.
When Millie had entered the picture during their freshman year, Olive and Keys had already known each other for seven years, and while she’d always had suspicions that the pair were harboring secret affection for one another, when Olive had asked her out on a date, she’d accepted. Olive was sweet and pretty, and spoke highly of the people she loved, and maybe Millie had gotten romantic and platonic feelings confused, because their relationship had fizzled out soon after. Queerness was a journey to explore for both of them.
Neither of them had ever said anything aloud about their affection for one another, but Millie could see it plain as day the moment she was newly single. Keys took cans of soda from Olive’s hands and opened them unprompted, insisting she didn’t mess up her nails. Olive answered every single phone call, text, and video chat request from Keys in record time. They were fucking idiots.
Now, Millie locks eyes with Keys the second Olive is distracted, submerged in her PC. He looks fully bewildered, eyes wide and cheeks flushed sugar pink. The smile on his dumb face has yet to melt.
Mouser caches his gaze first. He gestures first to Olive, then brings his hands to his heart, nodding solemnly. Millie can’t help but agree with his silent monologue.
When Keys begins to turn in his chair, she bats at his shoulder. She also doesn’t say anything, knowing she doesn’t have to. A hard stare says enough, she thinks. Her eyes flicker to Olive, who’s now donning a pair of headphones and chewing her lower lip, visibly lost in thought. When she looks back at Keys, the defeat is visible on his face, and Millie almost feels bad for a second before remembering how many times he’s given her those same eyes to get out of random shit in the past- and succeeded. She doubles down, pursing her lips.
Though she can tell he’s nervous, he concedes and slides his glasses off his nose. Millie turns in her chair, pulling her headphones over her ears and hitting the mute button so she can eavesdrop.
She hears the creak of his chair move as he stands, the sound of him shuffling- achingly slow, mind you- across the floor and stopping before the couch. Being the nosy person she is, Millie dims the brightness of her computer monitor so she can see their silhouettes behind her. “Hey,” he starts, a hand landing on Olive’s shoulder. The girl tugs her headphones down onto her neck, gifting him her full attention, which is so cute Millie has to bite her cheek to stifle her smile. “Um, do you wanna come grab a coffee with me?”
Fucking idiot.
To her left, Mouser groans. Yeah.
“Oh!” Olive smiles nonetheless. “I’m actually in the middle of a new track and I don’t wanna lose the ideas I have. But thank you.” She pats a manicured hand against Keys’ own, and slides her headphones back on.
Keys stands still, for some reason shocked that she didn’t catch onto his pathetic attempt. “Okay. Yeah.” He shifts, puts a hand into his pocket as he makes his way for the front door of Millie’s apartment. “I’ll just uh, grab you one.” He says.
There’s a beat, and for a second Millie thinks she’s going to have to put her fucking head through a wall at how awkward that was. Then Olive speaks again. “Oh, Keys, um-”
“I know,” he cuts her off, and from his spot in the doorway, Millie can see the soft curl of his lips, fond in the way he always has been toward their friend. “Small iced, caramel with extra cream.”
If Olive grins any harder, Millie thinks her face will crack in half. “Yeah,” she says, quieter than she had. When Keys leaves the apartment, she watches him go.
Millie presses a hand to the space between her eyebrows, rubs soothing circles to alleviate some secondhand stress. Whatever. She supposes they’ll try again later. She’s more than willing to play matchmaker for the foreseeable future if it means she’s not stuck in the middle of two morons and their wistful glances anymore.
She logs into the game, meets Guy to say her goodbyes.
When she starts speaking, it’s quiet, and she can’t exactly find the words. How do you break up with someone who isn’t even real, let alone your boyfriend?
Guy does it for her. He puts it all out there, in exactly the way she would want to say it if she could find the words. “I created this world, but I can’t live in it,” he says. Onscreen, his hand pats at her shoulder. “See? Was that so hard?”
She smiles, then takes a breath before adjusting her mic. “So, what are you gonna do?” It’s incredible, she thinks, a fully formed AI on her screen, so lifelike that it’s giving her advice.
A tilt of his pixelated head. “Whatever I want. Thanks to you.” His face smiles at her onscreen one. “I’m not stuck in a loop anymore, neither are you.”
It’s a little silly, she realizes, but the fondness that curls in her chest is so warm that she’s willing to overlook it. She’s gifted him so much, she realizes. All this time she’s wondered if the contributions she’d made to Free City were enough, and here she is standing before intelligent artificial life that she not only created, but freed.
“I love you, Millie,” he says next, and her throat tightens. “Maybe it’s in my coding, you know? Maybe I’m just written to want you to be my other half. Maybe that is my programming talking but, guess what? Someone wrote that program. I’m just a mirror image of your other half. I’m a love letter to them. And someone out there is the author.”
It hits her all at once, and she gasps as quietly as she can when the pieces all fit together. She remembers when they had started working on this game, back in college. Before the breakup. Before she knew she and Olive weren’t a match. Lovelorn, she recalls, who’d been waiting for his soulmate his whole life.
Her fingers fly to the keyboard, calling up the video Keys had sent her earlier that week, the one she hadn’t been able to finish watching. His face renders in the video player, and when she presses play, Keys confirms it all to her.
“You brought him to life. You brought him to life. And he was alive because he met the one person he waited his whole life for. And I had to make it realistic so,” onscreen Keys rubs his fingers together nervously. “I based it off of you and Olive. Back when I was programming him, I thought… I thought you two were meant to be. And that like, killed me, you know? Because I’ve loved her since we were kids and now she was with someone else.”
Millie’s hand clasps over her lips before she can do something stupid like scream. She finally has it.
Onscreen Keys tugs off his glasses. “I had all this love for her and nowhere to put it, so I poured it all into this guy that was looking for his soulmate. Someone who loved that he liked cotton candy ice cream, and glitter, and hummed along to this one Ashlee Simpson track from like 2004.” He sighs. “And I did, of course, but… back then I thought the someone she wanted wasn’t me- it was you.”
She pauses the video and turns over her shoulder to look where Olive is nodding her head gently to whatever tune is playing through her headphones. She can’t believe she didn’t see it before. Guy had always been a near-exact replica of her. Down to his fucking coffee order. And she’d fallen for it all over again, not because she was in love with him, but because he was so familiar. Son of a bitch. What a brilliant moron.
Millie turns back to her monitor, opens up her email account as fast as she can with her hands shaking in excitement. If Millie’s insistent needling and Keys’ horrible flirting won’t get her to see it, this video is the only way. Watch ASAP, she puts in the subject line, then adds the attachment and sends it. She also mutes her computer again, and watches her friend in the monitor reflection.
There’s a dainty gasp a few minutes later, and then Olive is tossing her headphones onto the couch and jogging out the door. “Finally!” Mouser yells, and Millie whoops her agreement. The two share a hi-five when the door slams closed.
The next time Millie sees her two friends, they’re holding hands the way only couples do, and Keys is wearing a smear of her lipgloss across his bottom lip. They don’t even have to say it. Millie already knows. And for the first time in a long time, she feels like everything is back in place.
* ENOLA HOLMES / ENGLISH / 2H 3M / 2020
— Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson does not appear. — Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes, Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes, Sam Claflin as Mycroft Holmes, and Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury. — Directed by Harry Bradbeer and distributed by Netflix. — Favorite Quality: I loved Enola more than I was expecting to, Millie did a fantastic job in this role.
I will begin by admitting that I may be slightly biased in my review, as I don’t like Henry Cavill. I will not be overly negative concerning his portrayal of Sherlock (as he did an okay job), but I wanted to say it to be as honest as possible. Watching this is the third time I have attempted to get through this movie, and the only time I have ever completed it; however, I am disappointed in myself for never getting through the first half of this movie before now. The fourth wall breaking is something I do not usually enjoy, nor quirky main characters, but I absolutely loved Enola; she was so entertaining. I had a hard time watching this movie whenever Mycroft “women don’t deserve rights” Holmes and Sherlock were on screen, but whenever they disappeared, I was having the time of my life watching Enola traverse London. It did fall into the modern demand for action, which took away from the mystery; however, it did actually feel like Enola was using her intelligence to figure things out instead of fumbling into every answer without doing any work. As a lesbian, I am not overly fond of awkward teenage relationships with heterosexual couples, but God, her relationship with Tewkesbury was cute. I think I enjoyed it more than usual because they did not officially end up together, which bugs me in almost all television series and movies I watch. I liked watching them develop feelings for each other but not immediately fall into “die-for-you” love. It might also be a small note, but I appreciate the acknowledgment of choice (and force) in corsetry instead of just being demonized; it was a nice nod toward the history and discussion behind the practice. This movie was aesthetically gorgeous and fulfilled my constant demands for a film set in Victorian England that isn’t just so dark you can’t see anything. The colors were rich throughout and only suffered through the end sequence, which made sense for what was happening. The plot was interesting, and I liked how they changed tracks (in terms of the main focus) early but still managed to make everything come together satisfyingly. I will be honest and say I just could not stand Sherlock or Mycroft; I thought they were both awful and just didn’t fit the characterizations (well, maybe Mycroft did), and I often got so mad when they were on screen I was tempted to fast forward through their parts. I don’t know if we were supposed to come to love Sherlock, but I just felt he was continuously awful and did very little to aid Enola throughout the movie. Mycroft, I just wanted to push him into a puddle and beat him with a blunt object. I think I was supposed to feel that way about him, so I’m not upset; I just felt like I shouldn’t have hated Sherlock as much as I did. That was just a high-class British man with an ego and nothing underneath; at the end of the movie, I still wasn’t sure if he even cared about Enola as much as they wanted me to believe he did. The acting was not bad; I just think I did not enjoy how he was portrayed. Despite those complaints, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and started the sequel immediately after finishing it because I wanted to watch more of Enola. As a Sherlock adaptation, I don’t think it holds up as Sherlock Holmes was unbearable, but as an adjacent media, it was one of my favorites. I haven’t cried because I felt as helpless as the characters in so long, Enola’s experiences made me so emotional throughout that I just loved her. Finally, I am proud to announce I will now be the Holmes’ stepmother because I will marry their mother if it’s the last thing I ever do. The women in this movie were all fantastic; I loved them all.
you filled a hole in her heart; how she wishes you were there forever
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mb13 | after a long roadie, mat turns up at your apartment. he was shocked when he seen your young daughter awake, and they have a small heart to heart.
Mat didn't expect for his trip to be this long.
A whole month long to be exact. A whole month away from you and your daughter. Granted, Amelia wasn't even his kid, but when you saw how Amelia interacted with Mat, it was a dream come true.
Of course at some point you knew you would eventually move on from her father, but when it was with an NHL player... there were some concerns.
Concerns that ended up just like how this one played out, you were just too deep in your own sleep to know it happened.
Mat promised to come straight to your apartment when he got back to New York, and he did exactly that. His hockey bag was discarded by the front door, the whole apartment dark.
It was around midnight, due to flight delays.
He decided to take a shower, a short one. When Mat was done, he just threw on some pajama pants. While standing in the bathroom, he heard a door slowly creak open, small cries coming from the opening.
Mat knew you were fast asleep, you were entirely too heavy of a sleeper.
As he turned on his heels, he heard a quiet, sad voice. "Mat?" Amelia spoke from her door, tears slowly streaming down her tired face.
Mat furrowed his eyebrows at her. "Mils? Why are you awake, is everything okay?" He whispered.
Amelia shook her head, slowly walking to the man. She sniffled, clearly holding back her tears. When she stood in front of Mat, she leaned against his leg. Mat let out a quiet sigh, picking her up into his arms.
"What's wrong, Mils?" Mat asked, looking at the small girl in his arms.
"I thought you left," Amelia sadly told him, leaning against his shoulder. A quiet cry came from her trembling body. "You were gone for so long."
Mat knew exactly what she was talking about. A sad situation of sorts.
Amelia was young when her father left, but not young enough to know what happened. Amelia watched her father leave, and never return. Only earning a simple, "He's not coming back." from you.
When Mat first started seeing you, you made it clear that with time, he was going to be seen as a father figure in Amelia's life. You told Mat on many occasions that unless your relationship was serious, he wasn't going to meet your daughter.
You were overly worried. It was your first time on a date with a man since your daughters father abruptly left. Amelia was three, a small toddler, but smart enough to wonder why her dad wasn't around. Though her brain didn't quite grasp, you knew she was very sad about it all.
But when Amelia met Mat for the first time, and you seen how Mat interacted with Amelia, you knew it was going to be hard if it didn't work out. But is has, for at least a few months so far.
Amelia knew Mat had a busy job, she understood that. But when Mat leaves for the long trips, it confuses Amelia. Sometimes Amelia would think that Mat left and never was going to come back.
Luckily Facetime was an option.
"I'm sorry, Millie." Mat sighed, using his hand to smooth down her messy hair. Mat placed her on the counter of the sink, so that she was facing him.
"I thought you were leaving me," Amelia sniffled, her small body hunched on the sink.
"I'm sorry you thought that, I think your mom and I just assumed you knew.." Mat trailed off, running a hand through his own messy hair.
"I didn't," Amelia deadpanned, crossing her arms.
Mat raised his eyebrows at her sass. "Millie, sometimes for my job, I have to go on the road for long period of time. But I'm always going to come back,"
Amelia just stared at him, rubbing her eyes.
"You are unfortunately stuck with me for as long as your mom allows you to be. Because I love you and I love your mom," Mat tried to joke.
"I'm not stuck with you, I like having you around! You always watch TV with me," Amelia's sad demeanor quickly changed to a more bright, happy demeanor.
"Sometimes I'll be gone for a couple days, but it can get up to a couple weeks. But, I can promise you that I'll always come back." Mat held up his pinky, watching as Amelia latched their pinkies together.
"Okay," She nodded.
Amelia wrapped her small arms around Mat's torso, attempting to pull him in for a hug. Mat picked her up once more, ready to put her back down to bed.
Mat walked to her bedroom door and just as he was about to open it, Amelia let out a whine. Mat paused, looking down at the girl.
"What?" He spoke quietly, his face laced with confusion.
"I have a question, actually two questions," Amelia leaned her head onto Mat's shoulder.
"Ask away, but then you have to go to bed." Mat sternly told her. "Your mom will kill me if I let you stay up."
Amelia nodded, letting out a dramatic sigh. "Can I call you dad? Is that okay? And also can I sleep with you and mom?"
Mat's mind went completely blank.
The discussion of whether Amelia would call him dad or not was ongoing. For Mat, it was like the official title to prove he was the one she thought of as a parent. It put him on the same pedestal as you. And for you?
Well, when the moment would come, the moment of when Amelia would call Mat dad, it made you nervous. You were naive to the notion that hockey players weren't shit, that they weren't the most loyal ones in the bunch.
So for Amelia to put him in the father position in her life, it made you nervous for the slight chance he would leave the both of you.
If only you could see the true and honest thoughts in Mat's head.
"You want to call me dad?" Mat asked, waiting for Amelia's confirmation.
"Yes, and I want to sleep in the bed with you and mom." Amelia nodded, confirming her words.
"Yes, you can sleep with us, and yes you can call me dad.” Mat spoke calmly, but his mind was anything but calm.
His mind was racing, all positive thoughts. That’s the one thing he’s been working towards since he fell in love with you.
Mat was learning, adapting to conform into a father figure for Amelia. He’s taken care of her while she was sick, went to her school concerts and even took a picture with her for her first day of pre-school.
Amelia asking to call him dad just proved his hard work was for everything.
Wings! Blitz au drabble.
Another day, another job with a new target.
The winged imp had used his wing span to appear bigger then he really was. A trick that was normally something used in the realm of trying to scare off a attacking animal. But it was also very helpful in terrifying a target. It worked well enough that it made the target veer away from the path to the road and back towards a different path.
Blitz wouldn't had had to cut off the target from running towards the road if Moxxie hadn't accidently missed the shot. He claimed he had been bitten by a horse fly just before he was going to shoot. And Blitz had still yelled at Moxxie about it despite having been bitten by this same sort of bug not long ago. How could something with the word horse in it's name be so annoying?
The target had now ran into the open field. They were going for their phone as they ran, hoping to call for help. A mistake on their end. Not that running would had helped now as Blitz and Millie were catching up with Blitz's newer but ever growing in strength flight strength and speed.
He was holding Millie by the waist. Adding to the carry weight was the ax Millie was holding. Months ago Blitz would not had been able to do this. But after all the practice making his wings and various other muscles stronger, he could easily do this.
"Ready Millie?" Blitz asked.
"You know it, B." Millie replied.
"In that case... death from above!" Blitz called out.
Then Blitz dropped Millie right at the target. The target did not have the time to move before Millie and her ax went right into their face.
Blitz let out a whoop in the air and swopped down to land. He landed just as Moxxie caught up to both him and Millie. Millie was making sure that the target was not getting up again even if they would had been able to survive that first attack.
"Whoo! That was the best plan!" Millie cried, taking a seconds worth of a break before going continuing her ax attack.
"Naturally. I came up with it." Blitz said.
Moxxie was still catching his breath as Blitz slapped a wing on Moxxie's back.
"A thing of beauty, huh Moxx?" Blitz said.
Moxxie's gaze naturally fell onto Millie as she hit the long since dead target one last time with the ax.
"Yeah..." Moxxie said, in that soft, swoon adjacent tone his voice would take on when talking about Millie sometimes.
"I meant my plan." Blitz said.
"Oh. Right. I mean it is great that your wings have gotten strong enough to lift someone. Though-" Moxxie said.
Blitz grinned, a spark of mischief in his eyes.
"Aw, someone jealous they didn't get a airlift?" Blitz asked.
"Huh? What no. Don't you even-" Moxxie said.
Too late. Blitz was taking to the air and grabbed hold of Moxxie by the waist.
"Blitz, Blitz no put me down right-" Moxxie cried.
Blitz was already in the air, lifting Moxxie up. Moxxie cried out louder, yelling at Blitz to go down.
"Don't drop him now!" Millie called out, waving to the two.
"No promises!" Blitz called back.
Of course Blitz had no intentions of dropping Moxxie.
But Moxxie didn't need to know that.
we’ll be alright-ish.
*for mills*
i get asked this all the time: would i make a good parent?
the correct answer: no. most definitely not.
but do i firmly believe that good parents exist in the world?
abso-fucking-lutely.
take my friends louis and harry for instance. they’ve been wanting a little knucklehead to call their own ever since they first met. both insanely, *insanely* good with kids. they’d been trying for three years. five surrogates, two that instantly turned them down because of god knows what, it wasn’t like they were providing a service to a pair of freak shows, although they definitely acted like it, apparently. one was reluctant to say yes, but got an abortion without them knowing. did it suck? yes. the fourth was more than willing, yet suffered a miscarriage at three months. the last one was probably the most shaky of them all. it was the only one that actually worked, true, but that poor woman had to have a c-section at ten months because that stubborn ass baby just *wouldn’t* come out. that whole time, you could tell they were in pain. you could see the evident emotion through them crying, harry more on the outside, louis more on the inside. did i mention that they love kids?
anyway, so one night my best girlfriend millie viktoria and i went over to their place to babysit their nine month old daughter elliott. cute as a button, every single feature of her, head to toe. harry was caressing her like i caress a pack of doritos after a long day at work. geez, they must have spent ten minutes saying goodbye to her. it was getting annoying, so i had to abruptly remind them of their 7:30 dinner reservation.
it’s funny, those two doofussy dorks swear left and right, but never around their kid. well, at least harry. i can’t say the same for louis, so i’ll just put it as very rarely. so i was expecting him to say “ah, shit,” but they just took off, louis wishing us luck in an obvious joking manner, apparently she was very easily to handle, at least, according to them. harry simply reminded us that there was a clearly organized checklist and other notes of what to do, how to properly care for her, all that fun (and by fun i mean booringg) technical stuff.
“mills, my love, can you read all that shit out to me?” i asked her as soon as the happy couple left. (and they were holding hands, gah! so cute!)
“it’s like… ten pages.” she was already on top of it.
“ten whole ass pages?! fuuuccckkk meeee.” i fake cried as i took a seat on the couch. “i’m hungry.”
“here,” millie came over to me, holding the precious child cargo thing that harry ever so delicately handed off to her. “you can hold ellie, and i will read up on what we need to do.”
“sounds like a plan.” i rolled my eyes before focusing them on… oh my god. she was beautiful.
“oh my god, aren’t you a sweetheart.” my voice dropped down considerably, i don’t know why.
but in my arms, she was quaking like i was when i watched gay porn for the first time.
“oh, you poor thing, you’re shivering.” i couldn’t have said that more deadpanned.
luckily there was a pale pink blanket next to me with white polka dots (or were they beige? i swore i wasn’t colorblind). jesus, harry the has a stupid thing for polka dots, the style diva that he is, it drives me nuts.
anyways, i wrapped elliott with the blanket, and rubbed her a bit so she’d warm up.
“there,” i smiled. “you look like a bean burrito that i could just eat up with some chimichurri.”
“ooh, that sounds delicious right about now.” millie came over licking her lips and sat down beside me, peeking over and waving to elliott.
“i know right. ugh, i’m starving.” with my free hand i rubbed my stomach. “i wonder what they got in the fridge.”
“rem, we can’t just rummage around in their fridge,” millie said to me as i got up with elliott in tow and went over to the fridge.
“hmm…” i looked around, searching for something. “red wine… ginger ale… should i make fun of them for that?” i glanced over at elliott, then back into the fridge, nodding to myself, “for sure.”
i found a slice of frozen pizza that had a couple of bite marks on the tip and the crust.
“rem, that’s not yours!” millie had appeared right beside me.
i shrugged. “well, now it is.” i finished the remainder of the slice in nineteen seconds flat.
“how was it?” millie asked as we sat back down on the couch.
“tastes like shit,” i remarked. “i bet louis made it.”
“shut up! louis is an amazing cook!”
“would he have the guts to appear on masterchef?” i shook my head. “don’t think so. wouldn’t dream of it.”
then i looked down at elliott. “would you like that? huh?” i took notice of how dead silent she was, and how she looked up at me with an eerily glazed (almost half-asleep) look in her pale turquoise eyes (the same gaze that i had when i salivated over that gay porn… alright i’ll stop.)
“you don’t really talk that much, do you?” i said to her.
“rem, she’s a baby, of course she can’t talk.”
“well, babies have their ways of communicating. babbling. cooing. burping. dumping in their diapers. the whole shebang.” i turned my attention to the quiet one. “you know what, what if i just squeezed the voice out of her?”
“gently! she’s a baby!”
so i took my thumbs and pressed down gENtLy on the lower portion of her rib cage, until…
“oh, i think that worked a little too well.”
“ya think?!” millie had this horrified expression that was present solely in her eyes, it was slightly hysterical.
because now came the tricky part, trying to get her to shut the hell up.
i could only imagine louis’ reaction…
“wot the bloody fuck did you do?!” in a tone of voice that could only scream unbridled rage.
i also knew that we’d most likely never get invited back to their place ever again.
and secretly, i liked this lil’ kid.
so talking to louis was definitely a no-go.
“call harry,” i told millie. “he’ll know what to do.”
“what?!”
“well, we can’t just leave this place and not have fixed this kid. what if they come home to this crying nightmare?! guess who they’re going to blame for it?! OBviously us!”
“rem, wait, just calm down for one second! i think harry said that playing some music soothes her more oft than not.”
i rolled my eyes. “of course he says that.
“i know harry has his guitar somewhere.”
“the one with the hand paint on it?”
millie nodded. “yeah.”
a smile formed on my lips. “i like that one. it’s very cool.” i looked around, seeing if it was within eyeshot. “i can’t see it anywhere, can you go find it for me?”
millie instantly shook her head. “how about you go find it. i believe it’s my turn to hold the baby.”
i sighed with a twinge of exasperation. “fiinne.” i passed elliott along to her and got up, millie following close behind with elliott.
after about ten minutes of searching, we eventually found it in their bedroom.
“holy crap, are we allowed to be in here?!”
millie laughed. “probably not.”
“i say we raid their drawers.”
“probably not a good idea.”
“why?!”
“because i know they’re very disorganized. probably.”
so we went over to the guitar, gazing down at it in sheer awe.
“i wanna touch it.”
“rem, wait.”
“i’m going to touch it.”
“well, i wanna touch it first!”
“too late.” i already had grabbed the guitar by the neck, running out of the room with it, millie walking as fast as she could behind me with elliott still in tow.
“hang on, there’s a crib in this spare room, i saw it out of the corner of my eye. i’m just gonna set her down there for a sec.”
i followed millie into the spare room and watched as she gently nestled elliott into her crib, adorned with so many things that i could only describe as a waste of valuable time, effort, and most importantly, money.
“okay, do you know how to play the guitar?” millie sat down in a rocking chair in the corner.
“fuck no, you?” i was twirling the guitar around like a tennis racket.
“i actually took lessons in primary school, so…” millie did that fruity hand flip thing that annoyed me so fucking much.
“well, i had the guitar first, so i should play it.”
“no, me.” millie got up and took hold of the lower portion of the guitar neck, trying to tug it away from me.
of course, you know this has to end well.
we kept playing tug of war with that damn guitar until we heard the high pitched twang sound of a guitar string snapping.
“oh, fuck.” i set the guitar down gently.
“harry will never forgive us.”
“nope.”
we looked at each other, petrified, horrified, you name it.
“what should we do?”
i shrugged. “we’re not calling him.”
“we basically just committed a heinous crime.”
“we should make a name for ourselves. rob a bank, commit a felony, commit a few felonies…”
“remy! now is not the time to joke around! this is serious!!!” millie was now pacing along this lavender colored silk rug that took up almost the entire floor. “we can’t just leave the place with not just a crying baby, but a broken guitar.”
“that’s two for the price of one,” i smirked.
“you’re not taking this seriously at all, are you?” millie’s voice had raised a bit.
i shrugged off her shoving me quite violently with trembling hands.
“alright! fine!” i rubbed one of my shoulder blades. “call harry then, see what he can do.”
“okay, maybe instead of being a stuck-up little bitch, maybe you can call him.” millie (rather aggressively) took the phone out of my pocket and shoved it in my face. it was probably the most passive-aggressive i’d seen and heard millie act in a long time, so i finally bit the bullet and took it upon myself to call harry.
“hey, what’s up?” i was expecting to hear noise in the background from the restaurant, but instead it was strangely quiet. he must have stepped outside to hear me better.
“i fully acknowledge that we’re the worst babysitters in the world,” i began to explain to him.
“what happened?” a split second later, a sense urgency clearly present in his tone.
so i took a deep breath and explained everything to him, saying the automatic “i’m really sorry,” after each sentence.
he took a considerably long pause, but i didn’t have to wait very long for his response. “guitar strings are replaceable, so no need to worry about that. i don’t mind any of you touching my guitar, but please try not to break it next time.” another pause. “you know that drawer right by my bedside, the third one down has all of my songs that i perform. hopefully millie still knows how to read sheet music, has all that in there.”
“yeah, i think i got it.” i hung up abruptly and went back into the bedroom. i then opened up the drawer, and caught sight of a stack of very neatly organized papers, each of them kept in an individual file with a label on each individual tab.
“which one would you think would calm down a screaming infant?” i shuffled through the tabs, my eyes immediately picking up on one that read medicine. “ah, medicine, that sounds enough like a healing remedy.”
millie tapped me on the shoulder, mouthing the word “no” quite frantically and making the motion of slitting her throat with her finger.
“what? why?” i shot her a questioning look.
“it’s about sex,” she mouthed to me.
“eh, teach ‘em young.”
suddenly i felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, and when i saw harry’s name appear on the caller id, i gulped.
“shiiittt, what now?”
i answered the phone. “allo?”
“you hung up on me?” the quiet background noise (or lack thereof, i should say) was still there.
“oh, sorry, didn’t mean to.”
“i was gonna tell you what songs specifically to play. well, i guess si can just tell you my favorite. fourteenth file down is fine line. i play it and sing it to her, but you only have to strum the instrumentals, you don’t have to sing if you don’t want to. works just the same.”
“fine line, eh?” i began shuffling through the files again.
“yes. when the surrogate would come to visit, i would get as close to her belly as i possibly could and play the song. i don’t know how, but i felt like she could hear it, cause like, whenever she was kicking or moving around or something, she’d immediately stop. so it like, kinda soothed her. even before she was born.”
“oh, that’s wonderful, thanks for sharing.” i couldn’t have sounded more sarcastic if i tried.
“let me know if you need anything else.”
i hung up, rolling my eyes.
“fine line it is then.”
“awww, that’s one of my favesss!” her voice sounded dreamlike, just like my voice when i described gay porn to my coworker for the first time (don’t ask).
“i still wish we could play medicine. i bet it’s a banging ass tune.” i probably sounded more dissapointed than i should have.
we went back into elliott’s room, only being met with piercing squeals even more deafening than before.
“fuck. this had better work.” i sat down on the floor while millie sat down in the rocking chair, reading over the sheet music before setting it down in front of her. and as she gently strummed the remaining chords on that guitar, she would occasionally look over, to make sure she was hitting the right notes and whatnot.
and very, very gradually, the wailing subsided.
phew.
“that was a close one,” i whispered.
millie set the guitar down on the floor and propped it up against the side of the rocking chair, going over to elliott, who was now fast asleep.
“she must have tuckered herself out while doing all that crying. takes up a lotta energy, y’know?” i got up and joined her, peering into the crib.
millie frowned and furrowed her brow. “she misses her dads, probably, poor thing.”
we left elliott’s room, millie leaving the nightlight on and the door slightly ajar, and headed back out into the living room.
i caught sight of a pile of papers that we’d abandoned on the kitchen, pointing them out to millie. “shit, we we supposed to do anything with that?”
she went over and picked them up, flipping through them. i peered over her shoulder and saw that everything was in cursive. how disgusting. nobody writes like that anymore. only old fashioned ass cronies. then again, i’m talking directly about harry.
“you know,” millie said, setting the papers down, “i think good parents go by a checklist like this. but the best parents… don’t even need one. they just learn as they go. that’s the best kind of parenting, i believe.”
i yawned and headed towards the front door. “fuck me, i’m getting an ice cream and calling it a night.”
this is garbage but i hope you still like it. @fiction-tastic hopefully to reprieve you from that somber-ish story i wrote the other day.
Also I forgot to ask you this a while ago but after reading "Waiting" I just had one quick question. Who gave you the right to come into my house, step into my room and rip my heart out like that?
IM SORRY I HAD TO DO IT! IF I DIDNT WRITE IT THE IDEA WOULDVE WENT AWAY AND I JUST COULDNT HAVE THAT!
However, I as the author declare that I am delusional and refuse to believe in the fate of my own work :).
