Like his whole character arc was about growing from being the aloof Shadowhand who didn’t care about anyone or anything but himself and his research. camilikha on twitter posted with mtl the part of the TGCF Audio Drama production team's talk where they discussed hua cheng's character concept, and i love what the AD team said so i attempted a rough translation of the CN text:

"The core of Hua Cheng's character: Ultimate beauty, ultimate danger, ultimate devoutness The simultaneous contradiction and balance in his feelings: On one hand, he has a yearning desire that is blasphemous; on the other hand, he sees Xie Lian as sacred and inviolable, so he simultaneously possesses a devotee's sense of worship and sacrifice [1], and restraint [2]. His love is akin to a fire in the abyss; on the surface he approaches everything with effortless skill and ease, but in his heart he is always simultaneously suppressing and yet burning with fervour and zeal."

*translation notes:

[1] "献祭 worship and sacrifice" here refers to the religious act of a worshipper making sacrificial offerings to their god. the sacrifices offered to the god can be other people/things, or oneself.

[2] for the part about "restraint 禁欲", the CN phrase used refers to religious asceticism or abstinence (the AD team used many phrases with specifically religious connotations in this description of HC). however, "asceticism" felt to me like the wrong eng word for HC as he is not ascetic at all, nor is his devotion or love chaste. I struggled to find an eng word that fit here, but this is what the AD team was likely referring to (his abstinence during the centuries before he met XL):

(I think the AD team may also have been referring to how HC initially attempted to hold himself back early in Book 1/Arc 1 for fear of overwhelming XL at first (during the period before they started kissing and HC realized XL fully reciprocated his attraction and desire).

and just my thoughts but i love how the AD understood HC as character so well! i love how they highlighted how he is simultaneously the concept of the most faithful devotee, and the most ardent lover. whether it's his religious devotion or his romantic/sexual love for XL, it's intense & passionate to the highest degree

i also love how they described the juxtaposition btwn HC's effortlessly calm & competent exterior, vs the intense passion he holds within. i really love how well the AD understands his character and allows HC to be as layered, multi-faceted and gorgeously romantic as he's meant to be

okay this is so small but makes me really happy. taketora just got done talking about how much he admires tanaka and how cool and "manly" he is, which like makes sense right, both tanaka and taketora are always being shown as these like loud "boy's boys" archetypes who do everything with power, talk about girls, and emphasize "guts" and "manliness," so obviously taketora would respect tanaka

but then he immediately turns to also think about how much he admires fukunaga in the same way—fukunaga who doesn't display any of those same qualities that taketora was just admiring about tanaka. fukunaga is quiet, fairly low-key and doesn't flaunt anything ever. dude just goes around making weird puns that 1 people often barely even hear and 2 apparently seem to baffle everyone. but taketora sees all of that and sees how fukunaga still shows up and gets the job done more than successfully—he's one of the top point getters on the team—and taketora respects him for all of that, still calls him a "man's man" and tbh more than respects him, he admires him and sees him as a rival

and idk that just makes me happy, like 1 it's a nice small way of furudate saying that yeah "manly" is a thing that's important to taketora but it doesn't just mean one stereotypical thing—like it's showing that taketora isn't as one dimensional as we would have thought and that he sees things from multiple perspectives (we also saw this from him back during the whole "guts" thing with kenma and how he respects him too)—and it's also an example of seeing fukunaga from another perspective too. it's because he's so low-key that even we as readers have probably barely noticed how much of a rock he is for the team, but if you got back through their matches you can see how often he does score—he's quiet but he's always there. and i just like that furudate takes a moment to not only acknowledge fukunaga but to do it from taketora's pov in order to really hit it home to us how true it must be

to me, fanon mickey often being ooc (imo) is a result of people not understanding his trauma ......or the complexities of autistic people's emotions. yes im back on my autistic mickey soapbox. argue with the wall

mickey is very childlike as a result of trauma and autism imo and acts impulsively as a result. being childlike is not the same as being childish/petty! he is immature in some ways, but he very much processes his emotions in an adult way. and as someone who finds autistic!mickey soso important, i honestly find it offensive the way his complex character is often watered down to either a petty, homophobic "thug" only capable of feeling rage or lust and only good for breaking shit; or a stray puppy that follows ian around and sits around to wait for the plot to need him to advance ians story

hes sensitive, stubborn, courageous, messy, creative, brackish, socially awkward. hes great with money and sometimes has good business plans, but if those plans fall through he always has a backup. healing his inner child is something hes not too keen on, but i like to think he eventually gets to a point where he can let go and enjoy the small things in life. draw for fun, watch shitty movies and like them anyway, let his husband dote on him, try cooking because its something he never got to do as a kid, work on his reading skills even if hes embarrassed to admit struggling with bigger words. he can do all this and have meltdowns and stim and yell and break shit because sometimes he struggles with expressing himself with words! he can do that and still be a well-rounded member of society! he does their taxes, knows the difference between Roth and Traditional IRAs, watches franny at the park like a hawk when he babysits her, teaches carl how to make a real bloody mary, goes on dates with ian and kisses him in public, secretly feeds the neighborhood cats because they remind of the one that stuck around the milkovich house

This whole interview is incredibly fascinating to me, and understandably frustrating for Neil given the interviewer pretty much trying to get him to come out the entire time, but the final two questions and answers here are incredibly poignant and interesting and sincere from Neil. He pretty matter-of-factly hones in on how his lyrics and their music operates in terms of signs and signifiers and in relation to the world and society. It's a bit unfortunate Chris Heath doesn't really focus in on Neil's answers but Chris' remark right after is hilarious
