I might have his character all wrong heehoo but I'm obsessed with this little clown && wanted to write something for him 🙏💕
Tumblr media
“starry eyes” 🃏
pairing. the weeping clown x you pronouns. unspecified notes. pre-oletus manor synopsis. you and joker dream of similar but ultimately different things
Tumblr media
For a long time, very few things could be considered comforting to Hullabaloo’s famed weeping clown. The greatest among them—his parents’ letters—had stopped coming to him long ago, and the rest of his happiness found him in temporary bouts.
But for every shred of hope he found, it seemed his problems only tripled. Tonight, for example, Bernard canceled his routine. Sergei’s new vaudevillian act had taken the audience by storm, snuffing out any remaining interest in Joker’s. Had this been any other performer, he would have welcomed his break, but now he was battling frustration, discouragement, and an injured pride all at once.
At least one new comfort had presented itself to him recently, and it came in the form of you. Neither of you had any plans, which meant that your boredom got to dictate your night— so you swiped a few sparkler sticks from backstage and climbed up to the roof of the funhouse. And here, Joker expelled all of his frustrations.
“Out of any of us, it had to be Sergei.” His eyes burned just as vehemently as the pink sparkler in his hands. “Reckon one of these days he’ll roll out of his tent, drunk to hell, and show ‘em all himself what kind of a ‘gent’ he really is.”
“It wouldn’t change anything.” You were staring down at your own sparkler. “Not as long as Sergei’s selling out tickets, anyway.”
Joker turned and met with the side of your face. “No, Bernard’s a respectable feller—he’d do something. If he just saw what I’ve seen, all those things that keep happening to Natalie, he’d make it right.”
Reality didn’t look as rosy to you, but Joker had no doubt in his mind about the ringleader. Growing up in the magic of a circus would do that to a person. He’d probably never even taken a breath of air that wasn’t perfumed with popcorn and hot sugar.
He faced forward again, sinking his head low. “I need to do something. Not just for Natalie, but for me too. My show gets scrubbed, then what? I lose the money my family needs... I’ll just be some background tree for a different act while my paycheck goes to that beefsteak...”
The obvious solution would be to inform Bernard himself. Joker had contemplated it many times, of course. But he feared that might subject Natalie to a worse fate at Sergei’s hand, so he kept his lips sealed.
You averted your gaze down to the circus-goers below. A thought came to mind, but you were a little hesitant to share. “If... things escalated,” you started, “I wouldn’t mind going with you. I mean, to go look for a new troupe. ...Or something.”
“C’mon, don’t humor me with things you don’t mean. You’ve got your whole world here.”
“Well, it’s yours too. We’d both be losing a piece of our lives if they kicked you out.” Any uncertainty you had about bringing this up slowly melted away. You scooted closer to him, your free hand resting over his thigh. “We could find somewhere that promises so much more than Hullabaloo.”
It felt nice to dream a little. Joker’s lips tugged up into a ghost of a smile, but it faded just as fast as it appeared. “I wouldn’t go anywhere anyway. It was the deal: stay here till Ma and Pa come back for me. It’s just going to take longer now...”
“Maybe that’s the world’s way of telling you to make a change.” Your hand returned to your own lap, which Joker caught out of the corner of his eye. “You know? Life isn’t limited to the circus. All that experience with the masks you carve and gilt for your acts, you could be a proper carpenter.”
“I want a change, but not like that. I don’t have the money to gamble on a load of what-ifs. But once I’m with my family——”
Joker was interrupted mid-sentence by a firework shooting up in the sky. When his voice faded out, you both trailed your eyes up the streaks of color cracking through the darkness. Then he kept going.
“Once I’m with my family,” he said, “we’ll be alright. I could even come back for you.”
Surely you must have misheard him. “...What?”
“I-If you want! I don’t know. You were implying it yourself, and it sounded nice...”
A dozen more dazzling fireworks shot through the skies. The circus pulsated with pops of color all night long, but with the fireworks reflected on the river, there really wasn’t a single dull place in sight.
Although, in your eyes, the most mesmerizing of all was seated right beside you.
“That’s a promise, then.”
Maybe someday Joker would think the same of you.

Funny Girl (Fred x reader, George x reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: Being serious has never been your thing, but when you find yourself at the center of a conflict that tears Fred and George apart in the midst of the second wizarding war, it’s hard to find something to laugh about.
Warnings/Notes: Language, kissing, violence mentions, love triangle?, angst, arguing. Vaguely conceptually inspired by the musical of the same name. Written for @acosmis-t ‘s 2.2k writing challenge!
You’re sitting with George outside of Lee Jordan’s flat, waiting for Fred to finish recording Potterwatch so you can all three grab dinner. You listen absentmindedly on a small radio George produces from his coat pocket, fiddling with your wand.
“Rapier,” you laugh, “I know it’s called ‘pirate’ radio but it is a bit swashbuckling, don’t you think?” you say, poking fun at the moniker Fred’s chosen for the program.
“I suppose Lee thinks so too, this makes it the third program in a row where he’s called Freddie ‘Rodent’ instead. I’d laugh if we didn’t have the same last name!”
“Well, it suits you both. You’re devious as a couple of weasels and fuzzy, too,” you say, prodding at George’s springy ginger hair playfully. He grins and brushes you off, but your touch seems to stir something in him.
“What is it, did I hit your factory reset button or something?” George smiles halfheartedly, but his brooding becomes more apparent as he tries to cover it up. “C’mon, what’re you pouting about Georgie?”
“Y/n, I have to tell you something,” he says. Your heart sinks at the words. It sounds oddly serious.
“Oh, this can’t be good news,” you mutter, looking at him expectantly. He takes a deep breath.
“Well, I suppose it’s up to you whether it’s good or bad. But hey, look, you have to promise not to tell Fred if it winds up being bad.”
“Deal.”
“Y/N,” he says, turning down the radio, “I like you,”
“Well gee, I like you too. We’ve been friends for about nine years and you’re just now figuring out that you like my company? Some people, I swear.”
“No, I like you. I mean, I, uh, I have feelings for you! But it’s complicated.” Your jaw drops and your hand flies to your mouth.
“Oh! What? You mean-”
As you’re searching for the right words, the door swings open and Fred spills out into the hallway, tugging his long winter coat over his slim shoulders. You try to cover your blush, glancing between them. Fred and George. George and Fred. Your two best friends since first year, your greatest confidants, and now, the two people you trust most amidst the terror of the war. You know instinctively that to be with George would be to close a door to Fred, not just in terms of romance but also friendship.
“Later,” you hiss excitedly in George’s ear. Fred eyes the two of you suspiciously, but before he can say anything, you’re mocking him boisterously.
“Good show, Rodent!” you say, clapping him roughly on the back. George composes himself nervously and follows as you and Fred turn to leave. “How about a hunk of cheese? I’ll take you out for something real nice, maybe a wheel of gruyere,” you add. Fred chuckles and throws his arm around you. You’ve always had a more physical friendship with Fred, whether it’s snuggling on the couch or shoving each other about over who gets the better seat on the train. You hope that he can’t feel how tense George’s proposition has made you, and you wriggle out of his arms and jog ahead playfully.
Because of the affectionate nature of your relationship, you’ve always suspected that Fred may have feelings for you, but never George. You’re blindsided by his confession, and you know it’ll only come between you. Your train of thought is interrupted when the boys ask if you want to come back to theirs for dinner instead of going out. You agree absentmindedly, and Fred steps away to call for takeaway. You willfully ignore George’s pointed glances and look around airily.
“Y/N,” George says quietly, but forcefully. You sigh.
“Is there something wrong, George?” you say at a normal volume.
“Hush, would you? Well, have I made you uncomfortable or something? You’re being odd, Fred will wonder what’s the matter.”
“You haven’t told Fred?” you sing loudly, hoping to pull the other twin into the conversation. George smacks his forehead and groans, but Fred isn’t paying any attention.
“Y/N, can’t you be serious for one second?”
“Bloody hell, can’t you let me alone for one second?” you snap, surprised at the bite in your voice. George cowers and frowns, but Fred returns before the conversation can continue.
The next few weeks are relatively normal, and you begin to think that your strategy of avoiding any acknowledgement whatever of George’s advances is working. You avoid spending any time alone with George. Most people wouldn’t think it, but you know the twins keep secrets from each other sometimes, like any siblings do, and he obviously hasn’t told Fred about his feelings.
While you’re evading intimate moments with George, you take time to think: do you have feelings for him? The answer is, of course, yes. You’ve always thought he was more classically handsome than his brother, even though a lot of your classmates still couldn’t tell one from the other after years living with them. George’s face is slightly longer and more defined, and the severity of his features can be quite striking, in the right lighting. He’s also always struck you as more outwardly sensitive and caring, in that he notices your feelings more readily. If you’re having a bad day, George is the one to lend a listening ear. He’s seen you at your worst and apparently likes you quite a lot in spite of it.
Fred, on the other hand, is more like you in every way: he’s the louder one of the twins, more boisterous, a bit rougher looking. Like you, it takes a lot to ruffle his feathers, but once something gets to him, he’s quick to anger. Your tempers have rarely led you to fight, but when it’s happened George has always been there to smooth things out between the two of you. You’d even say that you’re slightly closer to Fred, although your relationship with him is more intuitive than your friendship with George- with George, you explain yourself, but with Fred, there’s no need.
You’re pondering the situation on the boys’ sofa when Fred bursts through the door, looking quite cheeky. His shifty eyes belie some sort of mischief.
“Alright! Out with it, or I’m leaving before you get me with the bucket over the door trick again! I haven’t got any dry clothes,” you pout.
“Who’s to say there’s anything to tell?”
“I’ll believe that when you wipe the smirk off your face,” you counter.
“What smirk?” he says, blushing. You raise your wand defensively.
“Hey! I pinky promise, I’m not planning on pranking you,” he says. You wiggle your wand, raising an eyebrow.
“What are you planning, then? Tell me or I’m tying your shoelaces together with this thing.”
“Fine, but would you put the wand down? It’s not a prank, I promise.” he moves to sit on the couch and you cower, giggling, sure that he’s at least going to go in for a tickle.
“I’m not gonna tickle you!” he exclaims, but wiggles his fingers in your direction. The mere idea of it makes you shake desperately with laughter.
“Stop! Ah! Liar!! Oh! Fred!!!” He lowers his hand. You eye him suspiciously. He sighs. You nod at his hands, as if telling him to put them away. He sighs again and sits on them. You regain your composure cautiously, but as soon as you look away he’s tickling your relentlessly, his hands at your ribcage. You howl with laughter, kicking and rolling away from him, but it’s no use. He pins you under his body on the couch and shoves one hand in your armpit. You’re nearly crying with laughter now.
“Mercy! Uncle! Ah!” you cry, and he pauses. His hips are situated between your thighs, which you’ve been trying to use to push him away, and his face is close to yours.
“You want me to stop?” he asks teasingly, ghosting a hand over your ribcage, causing you to burst with laughter again.
“Please! Fred!” He looks around, as if to an imaginary audience.
“What can I say, I know how to make a girl beg,” he says smugly. You swat him, bringing on another round of tickles, this time one hand at the nape of your neck and the other on your waist. You feel a bulge in Fred’s pants that makes you feel warm inside. The excitement of your scuffle has made you feel a bit happy go lucky. In another pause, you look up at Fred invitingly, even tilting your body into his just slightly. It’s not something you think about- you just do it.
He takes your invitation and suddenly his lips are on yours and it’s not a joke anymore, it’s just a really great kiss, rough and wet and full. His hips press into yours and you can feel his cock hardening. You keep going for a long time, too long, before you pull away.
“Fred,” you say, panting with shock and excitement.
“Y/n,” he says, the same emotions playing across his face.
“We can’t.”
“Why not?” he says, running a hand over your thigh.
“George…”
“No love, I’m Fred, good guess though!” he kisses your neck softly and you push him away.
“Freddie! I’m serious, I don’t want to.” He looks at you, confused and resigned, and pulls away. You stand up and straighten your clothes.
“Well, I’ll be off then. Say, be a doll and don’t mention this to anyone?” You say in a droll transatlantic accent. You groan internally. Why are you being so weird right now? You slip into your shoes and shut the door behind you, your heart pounding.
You’ve never been much on dating. 18, still a virgin, only kissed one boy, your date to the Yule Ball. Most men view you as a friend, nothing more. You’re a bit funny looking, and you’ve never gotten anything on looks alone; it’s your personality that wins you friends. That’s how you became friends with Fred and George- you were a class clown, just like them, and the three of you have always been well liked for it. Fred and George, though, were tall and handsome, and unlike you, had a lot of luck where romance was concerned. Their girlfriends were always jealous of you, but you thought nothing of it, since you were practically one of the boys. You see now that they were right. How odd.
You’re so wrapped up in your thoughts that you don’t hear George coming up the stairwell as you’re descending, and nearly bump into him on the landing.
“Oopsie!” you squeal. Oof, you think. I sound like a babbling idiot. “Oopsie poopsie!” you add, thinking that if you make it clear that it’s a little joke it’ll be less of a weird thing to say. George completely ignores your muttering and advances toward you, backing you into the corner.
“Y/n,” he says softly.
“George.”
“You’re blushing.”
“You’re standing on my foot.” He jumps back and looks down. He is not standing on your foot. “Gotcha!” you say, flicking him on the nose.
“You smell like cologne,” he says, inhaling.
“So do you.” He laughs softly and you scoot backwards, hoping to resist a second romantic encounter. He looks very handsome in the dim lighting of the stairwell, his eyes glimmering. You’re so close now that you’re nearly touching. You draw a deep breath, and before you can speak his lips are on yours. He’s softer and slower than Fred, but his kiss is deep and erotic. His hands move to the small of your back and caress you gently. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up as his lips move from your lips to your chin to your neck to your breast. You sigh with delight, but you hear the door at the top of the stairs open and push him away. You look up to see Fred, his face dark and crestfallen. You could crack the tension in the air with a spoon. You wrack your brain for a way to diffuse the tension, landing on jazz hands and a wry smile.
The boys frown, ignoring you, seemingly beginning to realize the situation. They look at each other in silence for a moment. “Tough crowd,” you mutter.
“Oh, I see,” Fred says stormily. “Fine, you’re all his then.”
“What?” George asks, confused.
“You see the way I look at her. You had to know how I feel.”
“How could I know if you didn’t tell me? Why wouldn’t you tell me?”
“I thought if I told you, you might tell her! With your little late night conversations and all,” Fred says accusingly.
“How can you be jealous of me talking to our friend when you’re practically feeling her up at every opportunity?”
“It was never like that!” you protest.
“Not until today,” Fred counters. “Or did you forget about that when you ran into my brother?”
“Wait a second, did you two…?” George glances between the two of you suspiciously.
“No!” you and Fred say in unison.
“We just kissed,” Fred says sheepishly. “Don’t worry though, I only beat you to her by a few seconds! You know what, come on up to the flat, we can take turns if that’s how it’s going to be!” He’s drunk with anger, his jaw clenched tightly.
“Oh my god! I just realized something!” you exclaim loudly, silencing both of them. You pause and drink in the quiet. “You two blokes look just alike!” you say in a thick cockney accent. George shrugs at you tiredly as if to say what the fuck. Fred spits as he turns to retreat to the flat.
“Go home, Y/n,” he says, shutting the door loudly. George just sighs as he stalks back downstairs, and you hear the bell ring as he exits through the front door of the shop. You slump to the ground, embarrassed and somehow feeling guilty in spite of the fact that you aren’t sure what you could have done to fix things between the three of you.
“I wonder if they’re related,” you mumble innocently, looking around at your audience of none. Why is it, you wonder, that you’re always funniest when nobody is around to hear it?

I didn’t fully reread the issues to make that Steph timeline, but I did skim back through them all, so naturally I have found myself with Thoughts.
The first time I read Robin, I really didn’t pay attention to writers, but the divisions are clearer the second time. For Steph in particular:
Chuck Dixon is, as always, a mixed bag. On the hand, he undoubtedly brought the character to prominence, brought her back after she died, and he also filled out her life a lot. On the other, Wow Is This Man A Conservative.
Grain of salt, since not a true re-read, but I think Jon Lewis’s short run is my favorite, at least for Steph. He made Timsteph genuinely supportive and sweet and he wrote the story where Steph grapples with her father’s death, which is easily one of my favorite of her arcs.
I don’t fuckin’ trust Bill Willingham for lingering so long over those torture scenes.
Wow Fabian Nicieza really did not treat her well! Personally, his arc feels even worse for Steph than War Games for me.  All the “Steph makes mistakes” characterization is brought up to 500%, with zero sign of learning from any time she’s made similar mistakes before. I like Steph as a bit desperate for approval, and maturing out of a little recklessness, and pre-Batgirl untrained in comparison to the others, because I think those are interesting and compelling flaws. But Nicieza ran so far with that that it doesn’t even make sense to me as characterization anymore; Steph just messes up for the sake of pushing Tim’s story forward.
Steph and Cass have a sweet relationship, but man it is not the flawless friendship everyone seems to reference. (I wonder if Cass’s grief colored perceptions in hindsight, or fandom sanded off the edges on their own.) I always had this vibe, but it’s nice to confirm and put words to my thoughts with a second look. They obviously enjoy spending time together, and they understand each other a lot, and the issue where they bond over their dads is particularly great. That said, at a fundamental level, Cass...doesn’t believe in Stephanie. She knocks Steph out to keep her out of fights--and to cut off arguments--and outright admits she thinks Batman is right about Steph not being good enough. But then still wants to hang out with her friend. They spring back to happy when Steph is Robin, but with nothing addressing the previous issues, it kinda reads to me like Cass ignores her concerns now that Bruce approves, instead of anything changing her mind.
damn, Steph is never allowed to have a good relationship with Tim and Bruce at the same time!! Tim likes her, but Bruce doesn’t. Bruce decides to train her, so Tim (though theoretically on good terms) isn’t seen interacting with her. Tim and Steph are back together, but Bruce decides to blacklist her. Steph ghosts Tim, but is happily Robin with Bruce. And on and on, and that’s not even getting into the ways Bruce directly damages Tim and Steph’s relationship.
God Bruce is unfair to her :(
Batgirl is like the reward for getting through years of Steph mistreatment. It’s an arc resolution that feels good for the character and for the reader
Dick and Steph appear together exactly once before Steph becomes Batgirl, and it’s right after Dick killed the Joker lmao. Can you imagine your boyfriend for years telling you about his super cool, talented, strong, charming, nice, competent, better than Batman, greatest ever big brother figure, and then you finally meet the guy and he LITERALLY has blood on his hands from beating a clown to death, while he monologues about his guilt ajksdfjkds

rating spirit halloween’s new animatronics for 2021
or at least what’s showing as New Arrivals on the site for me. looks like we got 15 new arrivals listed here and im HYPE about them so here we go
Tumblr media
the caretaker
pretty standard reaper character with a Gravedigger theme to it. hes... fine? nothing about this particularly stands out to me, but i dont dislike it at all. i like his gravestone. would be good for a graveyard set. i guess ill give him... 6.5/10
Tumblr media
mr. dark
at first glance he also just looks like a standard reaper character (or voldemort. he definitely looks like voldemort now that i think about it) but it turns out he SPRINGS UP RIDICULOUSLY TALL LIKE A CURSED WACKY INFLATABLE TUBE MAN and the spring motion in the video is actually really fucking fast so, while this isn’t a lot different from other jumpscare animatronics, i gotta give him credit bc i guarantee this would have scared the fuck outta me in person. according to the site he’s almost 9 feet tall at his full height
i expected him to jump out and scream but i did not expect. That. i feel like if you put him up on a stage or something to make him loom over people even more he’d be very menacing indeed. would also be really good if you put him behind something so you don’t see him until he's suddenly There
i like him, 8/10 springy spook man
click for more
Tumblr media
grave grabber
pretty much just a zombie but he’s cute i like him. i like the green eyes. i dont know what it is about him in motion but the video makes him kind of endearing to me for some reason and i dont know why. 6/10
Tumblr media
ophelia
at first for some reason i thought the monster’s name was ophelia but i think that’s supposed to be the name of the victim? i think the idea here is “girl haunted by a Nightmare” but the fact that the monster itself is so small and doesn’t actually have a body for the most part makes this unintentionally hilarious to me
Tumblr media
like. it. it’s so small. it’s just a little shoulder demon. it’s so cute
Tumblr media
psst. hey do we have any more cheetos
anyway i like how the girl’s eyes move back and forth but the sounds she makes are uncomfortable and she just looks so. stiff and solid and there doesn’t seem to be any movement at all other than her eyes and the monster peeking out so it’s just kind of weird to look at. it’s an interesting concept but the execution is just strange and unintentionally hilarious. 7/10 bc i still think its really funny
someone should buy this and mod it into chrona and ragnarok
Tumblr media
harriet hustle
WE DID IT KIDS WE FINALLY GOT A FEMALE CLOWN ANIMATRONIC im so happy i could cry i wish my store had her set up i want to meet her
i love how they have her hanging upside down like this, it makes it so much more visually interesting than the figures that just kinda stand there looking spooky, even though she doesn’t really Do much (she just swings and her head moves around a little, just laughs, doesn’t have spoken lines)
i love her outfit i love her hair shes SO cute i love this little murder gremlin i love her i love her
im still waiting on spirit to give us a female clown figure that isn’t “creepy little girl” (ive commented before on how their only female figures tend to be either the Old Hag or the Creepy Little Girl and not a lot else) but i absolutely love this all the same 20/10
this one is fun too because we also have:
Tumblr media
henry hustle
according to the description he’s actually harriet’s dad!! we have an evil clown father and daughter duo here and im LIVING for it
i dont think ive ever seen spirit do characters that are related to each other like this that’s so cute,
apparently his wife/harriet’s mother left them and ran off with the ringmaster. he’s a single father clown trying to raise his evil daughter clown and i support him wholeheartedly
there doesn’t seem to be any more animatronics on this storyline, we don’t have the mother here and the only ringmaster animatronic they have is the rotten ringmaster who was released previously, but i doubt he’s the homewrecker ringmaster in question. he Could Be. imagine if your wife left you for That. we dont even know if henry’s wife was also a clown or not. spirit halloween clown lore going on here
anyway i absolutely LOVE this clown, he does something INCREDIBLY STARTLING AND UNEXPECTED which i dont want to spoil for you. go watch his video and see what he does its great
my absolute favorite type of halloween animatronic is the “does something completely unexpected” category and this one is ALSO a clown and a GOOD clown at that
and he’s got this great vintage clown style i really like, i love scary clowns like this that actually look like they could believably be a real guy and not just some kind of mutant Clown Monster
and hes got cards!! card suit motif!!! i love it i love him this is a great clown 20/10 for him too
Tumblr media
w. raith
we have this one at my local store and listen to me. im completely obsessed with this ghost
it’s pretty much just a ghost but it’s SUCH A GOOD ghost. especially in this photo here with proper spooky lighting and everything. i would absolutely LOVE to see this in a haunt attraction, it looks SO good even in bright store lighting. i feel like this under the right lights and in the right environment could look SO fuckign cool
the shredded rag look!!! the ethereal glow!! the weird jellyfishy movement!!! the classic wooOoO oO o o ooo noises!! this may perhaps be the ideal ghost. it is without flaw. a perfect specimen. i fuckign LOVE this ghost i want it so badly but i do not have the space or the money for this thing 15/10 w. raith my beloved. my true love. maybe one day
Tumblr media
buzzsaw
at first i was slightly disappointed to see that this guy didn’t have an actual name, but then in the description apparently his name is Bill “Buzzsaw” Jackson and his backstory is he tried to be a wrestler but it didnt go very well so he grafted weapons in place of his hands. i guess. you know, to be better at wrestling. i dont really understand it and i definitely would not have gone with “disgraced former wrestler” as the concept for this guy
but anyway we have mr jackson at my store right now, he’s Big, i like him. he doesn’t really move very fast and doesn’t jump at you, he just kinda swings his saw around. for some reason he just seems friendly to me and i dont know why. makes me think of like an uncle dressed up for halloween rather than an actual murderer guy. i dont know i cant explain it but i like him hes my friend 8/10
Tumblr media
wacky mole
this guy’s also at my store this year, i didn’t know his name was wacky mole fsdgjsdg
he’s listed as a new arrival, but i thought i remembered seeing him before, and the description says he’s a returning fan favorite, so. i guess this is a re-release
anyway pretty standard Scary Monster Clown. his teeth look like candy corn. i like it but i think they should just Be candy corn. i like his colorscheme and his silly giant buttons. light up eyes are always a nice touch. he doesnt really stand out but hes overall a pretty good clown. 7/10
Tumblr media
grim
good ol’ classic skeleton. he’s pretty nicely modeled though and i highly recommend watching the video for this guy because he moves REALLY well for a spirit animatronic, he’s got a way wider range of movement than most of them do and his head moves really nicely. one of the benefits of a skeleton animatronic is you don’t have to deal with lip movement, so his jaw movements match with his lines a lot more realistically. i like the animated glowing eyes too, it really gives him a lot of personality. he’s really interesting to watch. like, it’s just a skeleton, but it’s a really really good skeleton, so, 8/10
Tumblr media
BEETLEJUICE!!
i love love love franchise character animatronics and spirit has so much great beetlejuice stuff this seems well suited to them but looking at it............. hm. hm
he just looks so. stiff and his face comes across like, deer caught in the headlights to me. it Does Not look very natural but it looks slightly better in motion (he just swivels from side to side and says a few phrases but it somehow looks less. shellshocked when he’s moving)
maybe not the greatest execution but maybe he looks better in person and im still hype to see him so 8/10 regardless
Tumblr media
night stalker
we have this guy at my store too, im still not really sure what’s going on with his arms (did he just rip loose from them and leave them behind? did someone do this to him? i dont know) but i love a good spooky scarecrow. love his Wiggles. hes a pretty good boy. 6.5/10
Tumblr media
here we have another pennywise, it pretty much just pops out at you, but it’s still pretty good. i like the full size one they had before better, but this one’s slightly cheaper and would be easier to integrate into a haunted house attraction since he comes with a built in set piece. it looks good but doesn’t do much. 7.5/10 i guess
Tumblr media
GHOSTFACE!!!!
FUCK YES I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
please. please spirit halloween set him up in my store so i can see him
anyway hes got kind of the same issue beetlejuice has where the figure just. looks kind of stiff, and he looks more like a spooky ghost decoration than like, A Person. he doesnt seem to have any lines or anything either, he just kinda pops out. but then again i guess whenever we see ghostface in person in the movies he doesn’t usually talk anyway. i dont really know how id make this better but it seems a little underwhelming somehow. still hype to see it though. 7/10 i guess
now if we could just get a jack torrance and a bela lugosi dracula id be content
i would LOVE to see Red from Us but i doubt they’d do one. my other horror beloved is norman bates but i know if they made one of him it’d just be him in a dress waving a knife around (not that i wouldn’t still be hype to see him, but, y’know) (anyway. tangent. moving on)

mr. howle
it’s. a werewolf. he howls. that’s....... about it
it’s a very nice looking werewolf, it’s a well designed figure and definitely looks very imposing, but it’s... just a werewolf. there’s not really anything particularly interesting or creative here. its a perfectly good werewolf. i dont have anything to say about this. 6.5/10
i also just am not a werewolf person so maybe someone out there who has a greater appreciation for werewolves might like him more

Sam’s Emotional Arc 1/3
I hated the finale immediately, but I’ve spent some time with it and talked to friends who loved it. I can see now what it was about, and I’ve come to appreciate the story they were trying to tell, even if I think it didn’t land right.
I’ve been told that my meta on this has helped other people come to terms with the finale, so I thought I’d compile it in one place from across various discord channels and twitter posts. If you are struggling with the finale, I hope it helps you.
Part of this actually started with a shit post. I was making a joke about Sam being psychic since he was scared of clowns when Dean died by one. I realized that may have been deliberate. I dug into the story more and now I’m convinced it was. Then I came across some excellent meta that fit with the themes I was finding and opened up the series even more for me.
Happiness isn’t in the having, it’s in just being. It’s in just saying it.
Cas said it. Dean accepted it. Sam lived it. First, Sam’s journey.
Clowns pop up in s15 before the barn scene. In 15.01, which was written by Dabb, Sam is injured by a clown. Castiel is able to save Sam and heal his injury. The clown keeps coming after Sam, with Sam having fight scenes with the clown, while others attack the other ghosts. The clown is kicking the shit out of Sam again, and Castiel saves him once more. Sam is unable to fight off the clown on his own both times.
They run until they are able to escape outside a magical barrier. Sam turns to the clown and says, “shut up”.
Tumblr media
This is literally Sam running from his fears. On top of that, this isn’t just any clown, but the ghost of John Wayne Gacy, from an episode also written by Dabb.
Dean: A serial killer clown. I mean, this is, like, the best/worst thing that’s ever happened to you, you know, ‘cause you love serial killers, but – but you hate clowns.
Sam gets nervous and struggles with the lighter before he’s able to get rid of the clown, for now.
Tumblr media
I believe this is a metaphor for hunting in general: it’s both the best of Sam’s life and also the worst. The clowns symbolize his relationship with Dean.
Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie was co-written by Dabb (see the pattern?). Sam’s fear of clowns was known since season 2. In season 7, Dabb explored where this fear came from.
On the surface, Sam’s fear is just because he found them creepy, but the episode explains that they actually come from Sam’s fear of being left behind by Dean.
youtube
This episode comes directly after an episode where Sam worried that Dean would get himself killed
Sam: Look... Dean, the thing is, tonight... It almost got you killed. Now, I don't care how you deal. I really, really don't. But just don't – don't get killed. Dean: I'll do what I can. Sam: Well, what's that supposed to mean? Dean: It means I'll do what I can. All right? You can shut up about it.
Sam is dealing with Hallucifer at this moment, but Hallucifer doesn’t really scare him. Losing Dean does.
Sam has a conversation with an employee about greatest fears.
youtube
Recognize the actress? She came back for s15 in 15.06. I don’t believe this was a coincidence. 15.06 featured Castiel helping a parent find their lost child in a season that features Castiel worried about losing Jack. Through his experience with her, Castiel confronts his fears and doubts and then returns to join in the fight against God. [I’ll touch on Castiel’s journey more in his chapter]
Sam’s greatest fear is losing Dean. There’s a lot in the series about how Sam felt lonely and abandoned for much of his childhood. A whole episode, Just My Imagination, centers around this. Sam hated when Dean went off on hunts without him.
Tumblr media
source In The Chitters, Sam tells Dean how his fear of losing his family paralyzed him as child. It’s a story where an older brother dies and the younger brother never recovers from it until he’s able to lay him to rest (sound familiar???)
Sam: You know, whenever you and Dad used to leave me to go hunting, and I-and I wouldn’t hear from y’all for a while, I, um, I was always sure that some vamp or rugaru, or take your pick, I always figured one of them finally got ya. I tried to think what to do, you know, the next step to take. I was just lost. Dean: We came back, though, every time.
You might naturally think, “Wait a minute! Sam left Dean multiple times!” Honestly, this was something I had a huge issue with when watching through the show the first time. I didn’t understand Sam and hated him leaving Dean in s8. I was completely on Dean’s side at first. But, on multiple rewatches and talking to others, I’ve realized that when Sam left Dean, he was running from his fear. In this TV Guide interview, Jared perfectly sums up why Sam left in season 1; he couldn’t stand to see his family die. Dabb wrote Dark Side of the Moon along with a comic that explains why Sam left in detail. While the comic isn’t official canon, it shows Dabb’s thought process. In it, Sam sees his family as running towards a horrible end and can’t handle dealing with that.
Dean: So what are you gonna do? You're just gonna live some normal, apple pie life? Is that it? Sam: No. Not normal. Safe.
There are many more points in the series where we learn about Sam’s fear of Dean dying. This would be 3948573945 pages long if I wrote them all out, so I’m going to focus on the key moments that loop back to this ending, but there’s so much more there.
If you are struggling with this and need more, please let me know and I can do a deeper dive into that subject. We first see Sam’s inability to let Dean go in season 1 when Sam refuses to let Dean die in Faith.
Dean: You're not gonna let me die in peace, are you? Sam: I'm not gonna let you die, period. We're going.
Sam’s whole arc in s3 is him being unable to handle Dean dying. He wants to save Dean, but Dean won’t let himself be saved. This was what Gabriel was trying to teach him in Mystery Spot.
Trickster: This obsession to save Dean? The way you two keep sacrificing yourselves for each other? Nothing good comes out of it. Just blood and pain. Dean's your weakness. And the bad guys know it, too. It's gonna be the death of you, Sam. Sometimes you just gotta let people go.
This is how Ruby gets under Sam’s skin and what gets him to start working with her. Everything Sam did was to save Dean. In s4, Sam’s arc is about him sacrificing himself in order to save Dean. He’s gutted from being unable to save Dean. In 4.12, Sam decides to drink demon blood in order to save Dean
Dean: [says that they will die early] Sam: Maybe we'll be different, Dean. Dean: What kind of Kool-Aid you drinking, man? Sammy, it ends bloody or sad. That's just the life. Sam: What if we could win?Dean: "Win"?Sam: If there was a way we could just...put an end to all of it.
When Sam breaks out of the panic room, he’s suicidal. He’s determined to save Dean with his life as the cost he’s willing to pay. He didn’t think he would survive killing Lilith. He was committing suicide in that moment. The reason why Sam is so willing to sacrifice himself in s5 is because he has low self esteem. He blames himself for everything that goes wrong. In Sam, Interrupted 5.11, also by Dabb, Sam has a breakdown under the weight of his guilt. He hates himself and he feels his rage is out of control. In season 6, we see soulless Sam and, unlike souled Sam, he has no rage. Yes, he’ll kill when necessary, but he’s not angry. It was Sam’s fear driving his rage. He felt out of control of his life and let it lead him down a dark path. In season 7, he sees Dean heading down a dark path and he feels helpless to stop it. He worries about dragging Dean down and tells Dean to let him go. But, at the same time, he’s developing coping techniques. He’s starting to face his fears.
youtube
And then Dean disappears and Sam completely falls apart. Sam didn’t have a healthy relationship with Amelia. They were two broken people clinging to each other. Sam and Dean struggle to reconnect after their time apart. There’s a lot of text addressing the horror of a partner dying and people trying to escape from it.
Mrs Holmes: He could see the end of my days were at hand, and... He had lived centuries all alone, but I don't think he could bear the thought of life without me. That's why he drove off that bridge. You must think I'm a monster.
In Hunteri Heroica written by GUESS WHO!?!? Sam finally acknowledges that he was living in a dream world with Amelia. He was running from his past. We see a flash back with Sam pressing on his scar, which he did to help himself distinguish fantasy from reality.
Tumblr media
The episode is about a man refusing to engage in reality and harming those around him. Sam has a big confrontation with him
Sam: Look, it can be nice living in a dream world. It can be great. I know that. And you can hide, and you can pretend... all the crap out there doesn't exist, but you can't do it forever because... eventually, whatever it is you're running from – it'll find you. [CASTIEL appears to be taking Sam’s words to heart.] It'll come along, and it'll punch you in the gut. And then... then you got to wake up, because if you don't, then trying to keep that dream alive will destroy you! It'll destroy everything!
Likewise, when Sam was with Jessica, he wasn’t honest about himself. He was hiding from his family and his past. Running to avoid pain. Sam is avoidant in general. Not just in his relationship with Dean. When he talks with Rowena in 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains about his fears of Lucifer, he admits that he could talk about it with Dean, but he can’t bring himself to.
Sam: I’ve seen it too. What he really looks like behind – behind whatever vessel. It… Yeah, still keeps me up at night. Rowena: How do you deal with it? Sam: I guess I don’t deal with it. Not really. I mean, I pushed it down and, um, the world kept almost ending, so I keep pushing it down, and I don’t know. [stammering] I really don’t talk about it, not even with Dean. I mean, I could. You know, he’d listen, but… That’s not something I really know how to share.
Tumblr media
In 15.20, Sam’s past is front and center. Literally. I know a lot of people found the Winchester family portrait odd and upsetting, but it symbolizes something I’ll get to in a bit. Instead of trying to avoid his grief, Sam has moments where he lets it wash over him. He goes and sits in the car. He’s no longer avoidant. He’s no longer running away. He’s letting his grief move through him. He’s literally sitting with it.
Tumblr media
Soulless Puppy pointed out that the characters emotional arcs is similar to DBT. Please look through their awesome meta here.
Personally, I see them as similar to the therapy I do called ACT. Both are forms of therapy where instead of fighting against them, you accept painful emotions and allow yourself to feel them. If you don’t do that work, then you can’t stop feeling them and your fears/ghosts will always haunt you.  In Swan Song, Chuck tells us that “Dean didn't want Cas to save him. Every part of him, every fiber he's got, wants to die, or find a way to bring Sam back. But he isn't gonna do either. Because he made a promise.”  In 15.20, Sam initially didn’t want to let Dean go. He’s been refusing to do this since season 1. When he’s separated from Dean he lives a fake life or destroys himself/the world trying to get Dean back. There’s a moment in 15.20 where Sam looks at Dean’s guns. He wants to commit suicide, but he makes the choice to live. For the time in Sam’s life, he let Dean go and lived with his pain. He no longer ran from it. After Swan Song, Dean was unable to let Sam go. He wanted him back. After Carry On, Sam is able to do what Dean couldn’t do. He lives a life outside of Dean. What’s more, Sam has reconciled himself with his past and his family. It’s clumsy and I wish it were better shown, but having the family portrait and their parents in heaven isn’t meant to excuse the way Sam and Dean were raised. In order to move past the trauma of his relationship with his parents, Sam fully integrates them into his life. In Lebanon, Sam was able to confront and forgive his father. In doing so, he can also forgive himself. Mary asks for forgiveness too, and he grants it to her. He doesn’t forget what happened, but he’s able to move forward and leave the intergenerational cycle of violence. He’s able to raise his son, Dean, the way his brother should have been raised.
Happiness isn’t in the having, it’s in just being. It’s in just saying it.
Cas said it. Dean accepted it. Sam lived it.
I can see why people see Sam’s life after Dean as unhappy. I hated it so much because I saw it as horrible and sad the first time through. I had to sit with myself and my emotions first. I think it’s because we’ve been told by society that we have to get rid of our grief in order to be happy. The finale was showing us that it’s possible to do the opposite. [Personally I think it would’ve been better had they showed more overtly happy memories, but many of my friends saw this straight away] When I began therapy, one of the first things I learned was that there aren’t “negative” emotions. When working with our kids, we call them Big emotions. In DBT/ACT, all emotions are treated as normal and natural. Grief, anger, sadness, etc, these are all normal parts of the human existence. We don’t need to run from them in order to have happiness. We can live with them. As interstitial said in our chats, “you can't change the past, you can only change your relationship to it. To accept that your past contained both love and heartache, to miss it, but also know you can do better; that's actual recovery, as good as it gets.” As Soulless-Puppy explained to me, Sam lived in duality. Dean was dead, but Sam lived. Sam was happy, but he grieved. Dean was with him in the watch and the car and his son, but Dean also waited for him in heaven. I hated the finale the first time I saw it, then next watched it with my boyfriend who loved it. As we were watching together and discussing it, I realized that Dean’s death scene wasn’t just about him, but about the show itself.
Dean promising Sam that he will be with Sam in Sam’s heart is also the show promising us that they will never leave it. That’s why Alex kept posting “The end has no end.” Just as Sam carried Dean with him in his heart, we will carry the show with us. I hope this helps. It’s a terrible thing to feel upset about an ending and thinking of the show this way, recognizing these patterns, is bringing me peace. I still have issues with how it was written, but now that I see what they were doing, I wish all the more that they had the chance to do it right. Please share your thoughts and experiences. I love hearing different opinions. Next up, Dean. Then Castiel.

Hi....If you don't mind me asking, who are your favorite MXTX characters (top 5 from each novel)? And why? I'm sorry if you've answered this question before.
Aw of course I don’t mind! Though I feel like my answer is going to be a disaster bc I love these casts so so much aha let’s see:
✨ SPOILERS AHEAD ✨
MDZS/CQL
1. Wei Wuxian
Ah so I feel like this is obvious based on the sheer quantity of things I produce and the effort I put into hurting him 😅 but yeah! I love how much of a classical tragic hero he is and I love how much love he has and how that gets twisted around and shaped into a collar of spikes around his own neck. I saw gif sets of wwx before I ever knew about CQL and my reaction was “fuck. I’m going to love him” and I do! And I love that he does learn from his past and I love most of all that he learns to accept the love he is given and is able to make a happy ending in a place of being loved and held in respect and appreciation
2. Wen Qing
On the other hand, I did not expect to be like “mine now” with Wen Qing. Don’t get me wrong, the sexy immortal look got me but it wasn’t really till I started writing fic that I was like ohhhhh Oh Boy. Wen Qing is brilliant and ruthless, fiercely loving and aloof and cold. I love that she gets the lose-lose challenge of balancing what is right for her family vs what is right in the world, what she owes to her sect and what she owes to individuals. The golden core transfer is my favorite dubious science experiment in p much all media I’ve consumed. She gets to be so human—prickly and tough and also achingly gentle and afraid and putting on a tough face and sometimes still crying. “I’m sorry and thank you” ! Im!!
3. Jiang Yanli
The first fic I wrote for this fandom was literally “Jiang Yanli died no she didn’t” lmao I do feel like I underserve Jiang Yanli in that I often fall prey to using her to further the complexity that the male characters are permitted while denying her the chance to be given the same space for development and breath — something to work on! But in that, I really genuinely love how tightly she binds herself to her family and how she tries so hard to be what others need her to be—and then she does make a choice for herself and for a single moment at least, she gets to be loved and to be happy and to have this, a husband and a son and a place, for herself. And terribly I love how much she permeates the story still after death. She is the unspoken voice, the face turned from the camera but always still present, carried in the hearts and names and memories of the ones left behind
She deserved better but—I am weak for the tragedy of it all
4. Jiang Cheng
Another surprise (tho hardly surprising in hindsight): Jiang Cheng is just...horribly understandable. He makes terrible choices and his greatest heroism is undone by a choice made for him or, in the case of “killing the Yiling Laozu” is a lie. He is such a youngest sibling who doesn’t want to be the youngest until all at once, he’s the one in charge and he doesn’t want it at all. He is full of anger and hurt and so much love he doesn’t know what to do with it, doesn’t want it anymore, has no place to put all of its terrible, overwhelming flood.
5. Lan Wangji
I almost didn’t put Lan Wangji or Jiang Cheng on here and then I realized that this is sort of a list of characters I’m pickiest about in fic and...yeah. I think what I love best about Lan Wangji is his journey of grief and healing and through that, his decision to step into world. Where Wei Wuxian’s decision to travel and be removed from the cultivation world (in varying degrees depending on your headcanon preference lol) is really, really important to me, Lan Wangji’s decision to go from being an isolated lone agent working apart from the systems of the world to being involved and invested in changing those systems and working to make them better is also really important to me. I’ve talked before about how relatable Lan Wangji is to me (esp with regards to our interaction with the outer world) and there is something deeply hopeful and comforting about post-timeskip Lan Wangji being in his like mid-/late-30s and still making decisions and growing and changing and choosing to invest himself in the world and the future
yeah. i have thoughts here that I don’t really have the maturity, life experience, or articulation to put into words but Lan Zhan Good basically
TGCF
1. Xie Lian
suuuurpriiiiise!! Yeah honestly mxtx’s mains in TGCF and MDZS really just hit all my buttons basically. What appeals to me most of all about Xie Lian is, fittingly, how he is humanity taken to extremes. His capacity for incredible kindness and compassion is equaled with his capacity for cruelness and ruthlessness. His heaven-shaking highs are matched with calamitous lows. He is the hyperbolic of what it is to be human—and he is also the small moments, the wildflowers and the maple leaves and the mundane chores and the comfort of whispered conversations late into the night. I could quite literally go on for pages about what I love about Xie Lian but I am not Hua Cheng and can restrain myself LMAO
2. Hua Cheng
of all the characters on these lists, Hua Cheng is the one I’m pickiest about tbh! When I say I love him for similar reasons as Xie Lian I don’t actually mean this as being similarities between the two but the fact that both of them so richly convey mxtx’s points about the nature of humanity and what it is to be human. Hua Cheng is both the boldest and most arrogant of all and also the most vulnerable, the one who shies away from the truth because he’s braced for it to hurt and isn’t sure he can take it. He is gory blood rain and an umbrella to shelter a fragile bloom; he is a blade whose wounds only heal if he permits it and he is a sacrifice that he brushes aside as a fit of madness. *pats his head* this boy can fit SO MUCH inside him that he refuses to acknowledge
3. Jun Wu
Definitely my favorite antagonist in recent reading. I was doubtful of him from the start (something something issues with authority something something probably should talk to my theoretical future therapist shhh) but the unfolding of his reveal was so delightfully painful and exquisite that I was like “YES!!!” reading all of it. About the epitome of a satisfying plot twist imo. But about the character himself, I love how he parallels so many — Xie Lian in his rise and fall, his glory and disgrace; Hua Cheng in his fixation and ruthlessness; He Xuan in losing himself to the plot and not knowing how to move forward. I love that he feels beyond human in a way the others don’t—he’s so old and has gone through so much and he doesn’t feel things the way humans do anymore, doesn’t remember right how love squeezes the heart or how hate can exist without acting on it. I love that he thinks he knows how to control everyone and that it’s such mundane things that fool him: Xie Lian’s absurd stubbornness, Hua Cheng’s foolish faith, Yin Yu’s...emotional maturity??? Not Sure how to verbalize that one. But in the end, he is defeated by both the humanity of others and by his own—he’s so tired. He’s exhausted in a way that gods and ghosts aren’t meant to be. He is, under the armor and the masks, the curses and the power, human—benevolent and cruel, evil and good.
4. He Xuan
I love my fish man! No but really I love how He Xuan is so fixed on his one goal that he refuses to acknowledge anything else in his (after)life—which doesn’t make it go away. I love that he is left unmoored, purposeless through the very act of completing that which gives him purpose. I love his long con and the ways he clings to himself but loses himself not in the act but in the telling himself it’s an act. I love that he tries to be a moral man and then becomes a ghost king, a calamity. His reveal is also terribly badass and I do love his bone fish wholly unironically. Like I’m not going to get a He Xuan tattoo (for one thing I’ve been meaning to get a tattoo for 5 years and still haven’t gotten around to it) but also. B o n e f i s h
5. Mu Qing
Of course! The Jiang Cheng of tgcf lol Mu Qing (which my phone desperately wants to autocorrect to my Qing) is so...gah he’s such a mess! And he so fully commits to the belief that no one will ever see and understand him as he is but will always view them through their own convictions about him and his actions — which is simultaneously heartbreakingly lonely and also. Sir You Are a Clown. I genuinely think he’s owed apologies from both Feng Xin and Xie Lian for their treatment and assumptions of him and think that he would be HORRIBLY offended at the thought (while secretly touched? But like secretly even to himself). He will never explain himself and will just clam up tighter the more people accuse him and it’s such a self-sabotaging behavior and also so horribly relatable. I love u sir, you’re a disaster
SVSS I have not read but I do really like the moshang art 😂

FOLKLORE THIRD LISTEN NOTES
the 1
how awesome is it to have been right about this song being about the one who got away?
it sets up a very romantic theme for the album and i don’t know how to explain it
i really love this production it’s very dreamy and tailored (don’t make the pun) to my interests
the verses on this song and the imagery they evoke are perfect god
the way this feels so hard feelings esque… the bus line and yeah
can we discuss “the greatest loves of all time are over now”
i think the only opener that beats this for me is state of grace?
persist and resist the temptation…
okay the more i listen to this the more i’m convinced it’s taylor reflecting on everything that happened in this album years later and reminiscing one day (don’t make the pun)
her vocals on this are so soothing i don’t know how to explain it
cardigan
i was really afraid i wouldn’t like this because of the title but i love it
the imagery really reminds me of poetry can we have folklore poems
i think it’s the chorus (starts with dancing in your levi’s) that i really adore
a friend to all is a friend to none taylor swift said if you are neutral in situations of injustice you have taken the side of the oppressor (no joke this is what i thought of the first time)
“heartbeat on the high line once in twenty lifetimes” might be my favourite lyric
the music video says so much about the album as a whole in terms of the pain
TO KISS IN CARS AND DOWNTOWN BARS WAS ALL WE NEEDED??? excuse me that’s literally a perfect lyric
the train comment this has such a gothic romance feel to it and i love the line peter losing wendy
when you are young they assume you know nothing maybe that’s my favourite lyric
CAUSE I KNEW EVERYTHING WHEN I WAS YOUNG no one talk to me
the front porch line has possible parallels to mad woman?
okay but if this isn’t narrated by betty i’ll eat my own foot
i feel like the hook has real potential to be cheesy / childish but she avoids it so well bless
also the production on this song? a literal dream. she picked the style of production i like best i swear to god thank you miss swift
the last great american dynasty
the beginning of this sounds a bit like 929 to me, but it’s very unique from the first two songs on the album and i like it a lot
okay but the storytelling in this first part of this song is unparalleled
she sounds like the town gossip and you know what? i love it
this is also a really dance-able song to me
blaming the woman… how victorian esque
the chorus is flawless from the lyrics to the vocals to the beat i really love that beat! is that a drum i don’t know music
taylor swift said bitch good for her
the way she says “boys” is really neat
“and losing on card game bets” vs “back when we were card sharks playing games i thought you were leading me on” literally no one is allowed to look at me
again i was dancing to this hard on the first listen because it’s amazing and i’m also seeing the lucky one / starlight vibes but it’s better than both those songs? how does she do it
AND THEN IT WAS BOUGHT BY ME??? i lost my mind?? also this reinforces my water as authenticity theory because she references midnight sea whatever i’ll expand later
i had a marvelous time ruining everything,,, maybe she’s the narrator maybe she’s betty like elizabeth taylor burton to this taylor,,,
her voice in this song is seriously amazing
exile ft. bon iver
this feels like a natural sequel to the last time but it has huge getaway car vibes thematically
okay a lot of people have said this is a haylor song but i see it as taylor’s evelyn hugo fanfiction and you can’t change my mind on that
she put a whole man on this song and it’s still super gay
also i don’t mind bon iver’s voice as much as gary lightbody but still gah (also i had no idea who he was before this album that’s on being born in 2005
)i think i’ve seen this film before but i didn’t like the ending… don’t know why this line hits so hard but it literally does no one touch me
the ooh vocalizations are really cool i am again obsessed with the production
god i just love the lyrics on this so much can you guys believe how amazing
i just want to discuss how this entire thing is evelyn hugo fanfictionso i’m leaving out the side door is thematically important to the album i don’t know how to explain this right now but i’m sure i’m right about this
walked a very thin line vs literally all of mirrorball
i gave so many signs no one touch me! we only know the version of someone they have chosen to show us! there will be no more explanation there will just be reputation
the homeland defending line is amazing i can’t get myself together apparently“i’ve seen this film before so i’m leaving out the side door” maybe the best lyric
the outro for this song is literally flawless i just want to ask taylor what was going through her mind when she made this album please
this song is so sad i don’t even want to discuss it i just want to cry
my tears ricochet
love her getting some sat vocab in spelling really is fun
the intro for this song is so pretty i love
if i’m on fire you’ll be made of ashes too vs the room is on fire invisible smoke
when i said taylor was painting herself as one of the heroes that die all alone i wasn’t kidding!
the way she says loved on this song is really appealing to me
this being the track five makes me super emotional i love this song
i didn’t have it in myself to go with grace,,, you’re the hero flying around saving face,,, if i’m dead to you why are you at the wake,,,, god these lyrics just cut super hard okay!
i feel super personally called out by this goddamn song…
some to throw… some to make a diamond ring after the marriage fanfare
what a ghostly scene / i pace like a ghost
the concept of angrily haunting your past lover because they screwed you over is so amazing
used to tell me i was brave because i fought you
i think this is our first properly angry track five since like dear john and i want to put my head on the desk and start sobbing but i won’t
the halloween vibes of this are sending me this is so perfect
“i’m screaming at the sky” “stolen lullaby” amazing lyrics and also her vocals i don’t want to talk about how emotionally attached i am to this album because i am
so the battleships will sink beneath the waves again i think this song is really personal
the way she sings and the lyrics have a really specific effect i will be crying over
this song is so good. it’s so good. track five supremacy.can we discuss how perfect the production is on the album i think we should
mirrorball
yet more perfect production? she’s really feeding me with this one
after ithk and lwymmd i was not expecting to be so obsessed with track 6 but what a pleasant surprise. like i initially liked ithk too but not like this (don’t make the pun)
again i am so upset by the lyrics
the hush…. i think she invented singing
god the chorus is so specific and so very taylor that i could cry like!! yes!! this is what it’s all about no one touch me seriously i mean it this time
masquerade revelers means something and it’s a beautiful visual too man she really stepped up her songwriting with this album
this whole song feels like something directly out of a dream
THE BRIDGE? BRIDGE CITY? I AM THE RODEO CLOWNS? THE TIGHTROPE? I’M STILL A BELIEVER BUT I DON’T KNOW WHY? THE VOCALS? THE LAYERED SINGING? DON’T TALK TO ME
i’ll show you every version of yourself tonight means something and i will cry
seven
this means the most to me really i just… this is for the kids who were victims of something bigger than them and i don’t want to cry but i think i just might for personal reasons
i again really love the production thanks for my rights miss swift
the half speaking really works for me this time (and this song is closeted teenager rights)
passed down like folk songs,,, i have emotions and i finally learned how to pronounce folk
and i’ve been meaning to tell you / i think your house is haunted / your dad is always mad and that must be why these lyrics are flawless and stunning and god. yeah. this song y’all
will you run away with me? yes. you won’t have to cry or hide in the closet what did i say!! closeted teenager anthem i’m tatttooing this on my forehead
i used to scream ferociously and that whole lyric might be my favourite part
again her vocals are an absolute dream i love the higher register
i still got love for you,,, this is really about childhood love and the way it fades but leaves an indelible mark goodbye i am done i can’t deal with this
i would listen to karaoke of this on its own because the background music is so perfect
taylor swift saw me listening to the japanese house and girl in red and said “hey i can do that” and you know what? she could!
august
okay so before we start this listen i want to say this song made me hyperventilate and almost cry at one in the morning which was great like. i wanted a song that made me feel as much as say it by maggie rogers and taylor swift said “okay bet”
that being said i really do love this intro i feel it’s very beautiful and it reminds me of white teeth teens a bit i can’t explain why
this is the lowkey version of cruel summer and it is equally gay
never have i ever before,,, taylor said i will romanticize being a teenager in love and it will be the most beautiful album you have ever heard in your life
i can see us lost in the memory just the way she sings the chorus is so beautiful
honestly this makes me feel like i’m sitting in a field which i think is the vibe taylor wanted to accomplish with lover but hey
her cruel summers and augusts were the equivalent of my january huh
this is the sad ending for cruel summer this is when she looked up and said “yeah you being in love with me is the worst thing i’ve ever heard” no one talk to me ever again
“back when we were still changing for the better / wanting was enough” is an absolutely perfect lyric i don’t want anyone to speak to me for the next year
“to live for the hope of it all / cancelled plans just in case you called / and say meet me behind the mall / so much for summer love” that was amazing that was perfect thank you
“you were mine to lose”
i love this chorus so much it’s unreal it’s just wow
august sipped away like a bottle of wine CAUSE YOU WERE NEVER MINE
i don’t even know what lyric to type up because they’re all so good and they evoke such a specific feeling i feel like i was punched in the gut
have i mentioned how much i love this production yet? i love this production
isn’t this outro just the most stunning thing you’ve ever heard wow
this is me trying
such a change of pace in terms of production and yet i am completely enamoured by it
the intro is so beautiful and the way she just transitions into a song so viscerally about her insecurities i... i refuse to do this damnit
this is apologizing for cheating but it was on her this time (no i don’t think taylor actually cheated on anyone it’s called storytelling and i feel this is one of the songs farther from her than the others)
for some reason the background music reminds me of pure heroine?
lyrically and thematically it sounds like the archer and wow can’t tell you how much i adore that
favourite lyric: i got wasted like all my potential
the curve became a sphere,,,, this is just such a good and honest and raw song how does she do it i’m asking how does she do it
i really love the melody of this thing i don’t know what to tell you
it’s so upset and emotional but resigned in a sense? i can’t really properly describe this
again this is bridge city! i don’t know if i’ve said this before but the bridge for this song is truly impeccable her ability to do this astounds me like the songwriting alone y’all
i really do love the background beat
illicit affairs
the visuals and the imagery and the storyline of this song are so perfect and damn i can just see the music video (i maintain this is by the same narrator as august)
you’ll be flushed when you return do you see what i mean by perfect visuals?
the way her voice pitches up and the high notes
who allowed the chorus to be this amazing i’ve listened to it like ten times now and my eye still twitches (should i get that checked out?)
i would like to repeat that this is an extremely gay song thank you taylor
a dwindling mercurial high is such a good line ugh i love the imagery again
clandestine meetings and stolen stares,, our secret moments in a crowded room,,,
maybe the perfume thing could build off the water theme?
the bridge of this thing goddamn wow i can’t believe
YOU SHOWED ME COLOURS YOU KNOW I CAN’T SEE WITH ANYONE ELSE
she’s on a cliff screaming in anger because the affair destroyed her!! august + illicit affairs are the same narrator and this is me trying is the person she was with,,, actually i think this is me trying might be about the other person apologizing to the narrator of august + illicit affairs,,,,
you taught me a secret language you know i can’t speak with anyone else vs. do all lovers feel like they’re inventing something do you ever just sit on the floor and cry
for you i would ruin myself a million times,,, evelyn hugo quote about screaming i’m in love with celia st james,,, death by a thousand cuts,,,, yes it’s fine everything is fine
invisible string
ahhh the pizzicato! that’s beautiful that’s really on point she really said strings kids rights huh
i really do like this production and the way it contributes to this idyllic image of her childhood whew i love this song a lot
ugh the melody of the pre chorus is so lovely we have to stan
all along there was an invisible string,,, tying you to me,,, okay now i am mildly intrigued by how much of this was autobiographical goddamnit there will be no more explanation
bad was the blood… that’s so cute! she said i looked like an american singer! no one touch me
wow her vocals on this song are so lovely and the lyrics! aren’t the lyrics just flat out amazing we have to stan taylor swift i think
string that pulled me and there are musicians pulling strings in the background okay i see you
that dive bar,,, dive bar on the east side,,, we love a consistent muse (also met you in a bar)
oh yes i do really like this bridge too it’s so romantic and wonderful perfect
an axe to grind for the boys who broke my heart? i think she should be allowed to do that as a treat
the hell / heaven reference thanks for another religious metaphor to add to my collection
her vocals on this song are so unique and i also like them a lot my eye is twitching again
maybe i got my track eleven rights back didn’t it! i really hope this is track 11 otherwise i’m going to look like a clown (no i don’t want to google it)
the outro is so soothing and beautiful i think i hear a violin
mad woman
the piano! hearing real instruments on taylor songs again! we are so blessed
i think this is narrated by the same woman from the last great american dynasty honestly
maybe also by the august / illicit affairs narrator trying to get revenge my mind okay
every time you call me crazy i get more crazy ugh i love this! women straight up going unhinged i see you with your gone girl fanfiction miss swift
the way this song feels like a whispered confession and her vocals and the eerie nature of the background music we have absolutely no choice but to stan
now i breathe flames every time i talk is a really amazing visual
this feels like a better done version of i did something bad i said what i said
it’s obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together - i love that line! i love unhinged taylor swift! blank space and idsb mashed together with a new feel i can’t put my finger on but i am quite literally obsessed with it
every time you call me crazy i get more crazy yeah that’s a line
there really isn’t anything like a mad woman (also this is intentionally linked to the last great american dynasty and i won’t shut up about this now)
the bridge is so intimidating and delightful! hell hath no fury like a scorned woman wow the visuals i see in my head are amazing
good wives always know taylor this is a better criticism of the patriarchy than the man is i just want you to know that from me personally
the outro is amazing there’s definitely some sort of snare drum here (i don’t know instruments again)
epiphany
it did not click that this song was about the pandemic the first time i listened to it
but honestly i am so obsessed with this intro it reminds me of the archer a little bit
i think this is paralleling war with the pandemic
ease your rifle and the accompanying vocal is so well song
okay the beaches reference is helping my water and authenticity thing
some things you just can’t speak about yeah i will lose my mind for personal reasons
this song is really comforting for some weird reason
something med school did not cover feels like an actual punch to the gut. someone’s daughter, someone’s mother… okay. okay i didn’t get this the first time but i am upset now.
and some things you just can’t speak about is a line and a half i think
it’s really just so beautiful and it’s hurting me
what’s the significance of twenty? she keeps referencing it and in lover too
but wow the bridge is otherworldly i love it so much… her mind amazes me
watch you breathe in… watch you breathe in…. please it’s so beautiful i can’t
actually this song might be one of my favourites it’s so good (of course i’ve thought that about all the songs so take this comment with a grain of salt please)
the outro is also super heavenly do i hear strings again?
betty
so we’re all in agreement this is gay
the beginning sounds so country and that’s her beginning and this is about a high school love
you can’t believe a word she says (most times) is so fun and cute i can’t believe i got rights handed to me on a silver platter with this one
the storyline she implies in the chorus it’s literally so beautiful i just have a lot of feelings! i snuck in through the garden gate every night that summer just to seal my fate!
this feels like a quintessential taylor swift song with the characterizations and the lyrics and how it feels ripped out of a diary entry (yes i know it isn’t but that’s how it feels )
do i hear a fiddler? emily poe is that you? not the point i know
BUT IF I JUST SHOWED UP AT YOUR PARTY man the chorus really does snap
taylor swift said fuck 2020 god bless america we’re officially moving into a good timeline
on broken cobblestones is all of my rights encapsulated into one don’t touch me
this is just gay james is a lesbian i don’t make the rules i just enforce them please
betty i’m here on your doorstep LIKE IN THIS IS ME TRYING BETTY IS THE AUGUST  / ILLICIT AFFAIRS / MAD WOMAN / CARDIGAN / THE LAST GREAT AMERICAN DYNASTY NARRATOR
the narrator of betty is the same as this is me trying no one talk anymore
WILL YOU HAVE WILL YOU LOVE ME WILL YOU KISS ME ON THE PORCH IN FRONT OF ALL YOUR STUPID FRIENDS THE MOMENT OF EMOTIONAL CATHARSIS I EXPERIENCED
i’m only seventeen i don’t know anything and the way it explicitly connects to cardigan
car again / cardigan is some nice wordplay
this is an objectively perfect song
peace
the opening music for this track is really lovely, it feels like a good return to lowkey after how Much betty was honestly
our coming of age has come and gone is one of the best opening lines i’ve ever heard
i’ve never had courage in my convictions won’t you look at what a great lyric that is
no i can never give you peace,,, man i really do like this hook
the production on this song is amazing
i’m a fire and i’ll keep your brittle heart warm! the ocean wave line helps my authenticity theory! they say love’s for show but i would die for you in secret! is this a song or a series of excerpts from my poetry the world may never know (i’m kidding i could never write anything this good)
would it be enough if i could never give you peace no one look at me i can’t be perceived any more than this
it’s like i’m wasting your honour wow what a line that is especially after exile but then the narratives don’t exactly match up hold i’m thinking
swing with you for the fences (i know places) sit with you in the trenches (epiphany) i feel like there’s something to referencing those songs directly after each other
oh.. the child line…. oh?
i’m a clown to the north does that count
man this song is so good and it gives me serious call it what you want vibes for some reason
but i would die for you in secret i feel like this bears repeating cause i’ll scream
would it be enough,,,, am i too much,,,, i would like to lie down
the outro to this is so pretty and haunting and thematically it kind of reminds me of dwoht / afterglow but that’s just me
hoax
i wrote hoax lyrics pre album but hers are much better
my smoking gun,,, knife to a gunfight,,, the way,,, man
okay a depressing song to close out a taylor album is new and im going to lose my mind
i really love the piano in the background like that’s beautiful
the confessions screaming on the cliff vibe i was right
YOUR FAITHLESS LOVE’S THE ONLY HOAX I BELIEVE IN
no other sadness in the world would do well that is a depressing ending to seeing daylight
my best laid plans / my sleight of hand / my barren land she’s literally such an amazing songwriter why is anyone allowed to have this level of talent and not pay appropriate taxes
THE ASH FROM YOUR FIRE IS THIS THE PARALLEL TO MY TEARS RICOCHET? i think i cracked something here wow
YOU KNOW I LEFT A PART OF ME BACK IN NEW YORK PLEASE EXPLAIN
the hero died so what’s the movie for i’m fine this is all very fine can you hear me screaming
you knew you won so what’s the point of keeping score i really think this is the other half of my tears ricochet you guys
her voice and the production combined here is so haunting
my only one my kingdom come undone can we just have a mental breakdown super quickly and collectively so i know i’m not really losing my mind
i really love this song a lot wow
the piano harmonies / melodies are so pretty (i don’t know which one it is sue me)
it’s perfect wow

My first reaction to all of this?
Tumblr media
WHAT.
Tumblr media
THE.
Tumblr media
HELL.
You don’t need a whole-ass orc army complete with battering rams called Grond an army of that size to take the palace; covert and lightning fast is the way to go! Especially if you know how to find a secret passage leading straight into the Emperor’s bedroom. You know, as Song Huaien does! Is this just Song Huaien’s ego being let out to play? Does he really need to repeat Xiao Qi’s greatest hits, only bigger, better, with greater oomph and taking time to show off his numerous troops? Is that really it...?
Tumblr media
Then I saw those two clowns on the battlements... and the puzzle started to make sense!
See, there is a reason why Daddy Wang let all those ministers go. And it’s not because he thought they would sit this whole mess out instead of doing what any somewhat conscientous civil servant would do. That is, organizing a defense of strategic points. See, they even roped general Wei in! Okay, Awu was the one to send him a message, but still! I hope she did remember to ask him to relay all the best wishes to his Awesome Mom...
Tumblr media
Okay, but why this great production? Why this showy siege when you could just take the palace from within? Why surround the capital in such a way that Xiao Qi had to divide his own troops in order to break the blockade, even though you supposedly control the only great force in vicinity? Why, for heaven’s sake, let those ministers go, allowing them not only to mobilize their own troops, but also to smuggle the Emperor out, should they wish to do so. They didn’t bother with saving Zitan, but they totally could have in the time that Song Huaien took to arrange his toy soldiers in pretty rows! It’s almost like Daddy Wang wanted this bombastic, unnecessarily complicated performance instead of a wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am approach that would work just as fine while consuming a fraction of the resources.
And this is just it. Daddy Wang needs his coup to be HUGE. He needs to be seen. He desperately needs to make his one attempt into the biggest BOO! in the world. Because right now? He’s a dead man, a ghost story come back to life. And ghosts are the best fodder for rumours. If he wants to avoid a situation in which half the provinces keep WTF-ing and scrabbling for information while he tries to demand taxes, he’s on the right track.
But that’s not the only reason, even if Daddy Wang is really, really into this whole saying Boo! thing. See, public perception matters. And all those distant Ma cousins are merely careful, not dead. Let’s say that Daddy Wang takes power in a more discreet manner and announces his ascension to all and sundry. What would stop every single viable claimant in Cheng from coming after his head? Xiao Qi and his army have officially peaced out to Ningshuo, remember? Potato’s alleged edict isn’t worth the paper it’s been written on, if there’s nothing to back it up. What is Daddy Wang supposed to do in that case, send everybody a cute explanation of how he totally has an army, just ask Song Huaien? They will, you know. They will ask him... how much would it cost for him and his army to switch sides.
Daddy Wang is basically puffing up in order to look much bigger and much more threatening than he really is. He’s showing off that he has claws, fangs and thousands of swords, while at the same time marking Song Huaien as his. See, he is proudly announcing, I too have an army of my own and the guy leading it is so totally on my leash that he didn’t even hesitate before storming the imperial palace. What a good boy! Careful, he bites.
And you know what, it’s not a half-bad plan, although not even half as good as keeping Golden Ticket and setting him up as a figurehead. But it could have worked... IF. If is the key word here.

What Did Batman Do Between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises?
https://ift.tt/3cfgO0Z
The Dark Knight not so much glided back onto cinema screens in 2012 as he hobbled across them. With a scraggly, unkempt beard and a bathrobe acting as his cape, Bruce Wayne appeared more like how one imagines Christian Bale exists between gigs than Batman at the start of The Dark Knight Rises. He appeared like an invalid whose great adventures were behind him.
In retrospect, this is probably not the version of the Caped Crusader fans expected to find after The Dark Knight’s thrilling finale. At the close of what many still consider to be the high water mark for superhero movies, Batman has agreed to take on the burden of Harvey Dent’s sins, framing himself as a murderer and saving Gotham City from cynicism through a veil of lies. Yet it’s not really a sad ending. Gary Oldman’s Jim Gordon even pens a triumphant eulogy for the superhero’s fallen image. The Batman’s become “a Dark Knight.”
After the film concluded, many fans began speculating just what a third chapter of the Christopher Nolan directed and co-written Batman films would look like: the police at war with Batman? The rise of a criminal underworld of masked freaks like Joker and Batman, embracing the chaos unleashed by their fight? Maybe we’d get to see Batman tackle the Riddler, a foe almost as mentally taxing as the clown.
None of these came to pass, however, as made exceedingly clear in the first seconds of Bale’s introduction in The Dark Knight Rises. Eight years have passed in the film’s narrative since last we saw our hero, and Bruce is now disheveled and broken, haunted by ghosts while living like one in the shadows of Wayne Manor. Prior to directing Batman Begins, Nolan dreamed of making a film about Howard Hughes’ final years: the period when the millionaire aviator, film producer, and mad man succumbed to his neuroses and obsessions. Rises not so subtly revisits that iconography, with Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) even expressing disappointment over Citizen Wayne not having Hughes’ long fingernails.
To many moviegoers, particularly fans, this is apparently all Batman’s been doing for the last eight years: living like a recluse and leaving the burden of saving Gotham to the GCPD. However, given all the context clues in The Dark Knight Rises, this is hardly accurate.
Bruce Wayne’s Greatest Crusade
While Nolan’s third Batman movie begins with Bruce Wayne fully entrenched in his traumas—the loss of his parents, his murdered childhood love, Rachel Dawes, and an overwhelming sense of despair about the state of the world—he didn’t immediately hang up the cape at the end of The Dark Knight and start growing the beard. In fact, more than just obsessing over “saving Gotham,” Bruce moved on to trying to save everyone.
The timeline is never fully explained, but various scenes between Bruce Wayne, the woman who calls herself Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard), and other members of the Wayne Enterprises board reveal Bruce Wayne only gave fully into his demons about three years before the events of The Dark Knight Rises.
“You have a practiced apathy, Mr. Wayne,” Miranda says when she sees Bruce has stepped out of his cave, literally and figuratively, and is now at a charity event. “But a man who doesn’t care about the world doesn’t spend half his fortune trying to save it, and isn’t so wounded when it fails that he goes into hiding.” In another scene, she clarifies the timeline further when she tells Bruce (and thereby the audience), “Three years ago, a scientist published a paper on weaponized fusion reactions. One week later, your reactor started developing problems.”
When these details are fully considered, they paint a tragic portrait of Wayne’s isolation. In Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, Bruce Wayne never imagined Batman to be an indefatigable superhero who valiantly fights an endless war on crime. With the filmmakers’ quest to ground their Batman in verisimilitude—which is to say make him feel real even as his exploits are far from realistic—they opted to depict the character as neither crazy or misanthropic. He did not only put on the cape to soothe his fractured psyche, and he doesn’t get his jollies from beating up the desperate poor every night… a grim implication for a “grounded” interpretation of a billionaire patrolling “dangerous neighborhoods” looking for a fight.
As Bruce tells loyal butler Alfred (Michael Caine) in Batman Begins, “[I’m coming back] as long as it takes. I’m going to show the people of Gotham their city doesn’t belong to the criminals and corrupt.” In his way, Bruce viewed the Batman as akin to a political campaign. Batman’s a symbol to galvanize the better angels of Gotham around an idea of anti-corruption and anti-organized crime reform. And like a political operator, Bruce built a network of allies and true believers to implement incremental change through the system. But as the saying goes, the road to Hell is paved in good intentions.
After several years of Batman-ing, Bruce has inspired copycat vigilantes who got themselves killed and a nihilistic anarchist who called himself Joker, a glorified terrorist who did irreparable harm to Gotham’s institutions, its morality, and the public trust. Still, Bruce Wayne had a desire to use his wealth to improve the world, and not just his own mood. Hence instead of spending “half his wealth” solely on an ego-stroking war on crime, he invested in building a clean energy fusion reactor.
While it seemed like an almost incidental plot point in 2012, the increasingly dire effects of climate change with each passing year makes the fantasy of powerful nuclear fusion ever more appealing. A nuclear fusion reactor that actually produced comparable amounts of energy to modern nuclear power plants (which run via nuclear fission) would mean a much cheaper power source, as well as one that did not have the drawbacks of nuclear fission, including dangerous radioactive material that must be disposed of for millennia, and power plants that run the risk of melting down.
In Nolan’s fantasy action movies, Wayne Enterprises spent hundreds of billions of dollars on “some save the world vanity project,” as one of Bruce’s rivals puts it. A clean, cheap, and massive nuclear fusion reactor could be a silver bullet for curbing carbon emissions around the world, and a chance to stop something far scarier than supervillains.
Yet after five years of investment, it resulted in more chaos. A scientist’s paper in a professional journal reveals Wayne’s dream machine was also a weapon in the making. Indeed, that’s exactly how Tom Hardy’s Bane uses it during the second half of The Dark Knight Rises. Like the abstract idea of Batman before it, the good intentions baked into Wayne’s nuclear fusion miracle result in more death, more destabilization, and more chaos.
The man with an obvious hero complex failed again. Only then does Bruce give up on the world and indulge his myriad traumas.
Batman Returns Off-Screen?
That is how Bruce Wayne spent five of the eight years between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. However, that doesn’t mean there was not also room for Batman. While the canonical text of the film states no one has seen Batman in eight years, there is reason to believe Bruce Wayne did not hang up the cowl on the night Harvey Dent died.
In another scene in Rises, rookie cop John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) recalls the myth that grew around the night Harvey Dent died. Blake says it was “the last confirmed sighting of the Batman [before] he then vanishes.” But confirmed is the operative word here since there are little things that don’t line up between the two movies that fit this narrative. For starters, there is the swanky Batcave sitting beneath Wayne Manor. When we first see it in the third film, finally renovated after primarily being a long lost historical site from the 1800s in Batman Begins, Bruce is perched at a bank of computers, trying to figure out the identity of Selina Kyle.
“You haven’t been down here in a long time,” Alfred says to his surrogate son. The implication is that in some earlier time, Bruce would spend days in the Batcave. Why would he if his war on organized crime was over? Why build an entire second Batsuit in the cave to complement the one he keeps hidden in his off-site location if he’s done? The answer is that he wasn’t. At least not for some months or years after the events of The Dark Knight.

The Batman: Can a Superhero Movie Be Too Dark?
By David Crow
Throughout the movie, memories about the violent days after Two-Face’s death and the passage of the Dent Act abound, with all the characters describing it as a “war.” It seems plausible someone as obsessive and exacting as Bruce Wayne would want to participate. In fact, it’d be odd if he did not. Embracing hidden and more surreptitious tactics after becoming a public enemy might also explain how Batman injured his knee so badly between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises that he needs a brace to hide the limp.
It also might explain why no one bats an eye at Selina Kyle’s cat-themed costume. While no character calls the femme fatale with a heart of gold “Catwoman” in the film, she isn’t afraid of embracing the theatricality of her catlike ears either. She even hisses, “Cat got your tongue?” to a mark. The impracticality of this entire aesthetic seems inspired, at least in part, by the Batman. While there is never a line of dialogue confirming this, Hathaway and an uncharacteristically restrained Nolan rely on inference to get the point across.
Like Jim Gordon, Catwoman is given a moment to pause in what she’s doing to marvel at the television when news of Batman’s return breaks. And when she hitches a ride in the Batman’s sci-fi aircraft, she steals a glance at her surroundings when he’s not looking, smiling to herself about being in the same space as an apparent childhood hero. Indeed, Selina would’ve been a teenager during the events of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and like perhaps so many other members of the next generation of criminals and adventurers, her imagination took flight with news reports of a man dressed as a Bat jumping off rooftops.
It returns to the theme of “escalation” from The Dark Knight, with the Joker saying to Batman, “You’ve changed things forever.” At the beginning of that film, the Bat was still fighting mobsters; by the end he was facing clowns in war paint. The transition was painful for Gotham, but no one seems to think it odd anymore for a famed cat burglar to turn her goggles into cat ears. It makes you wonder if there were any more elements of a rogue’s gallery in the interceding years before the Dent Act brought vaguely unconstitutional order?
This is admittedly speculation. And the kind which reminds us that there were stories that could’ve been told between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises that we’ll never see. It’s probably this knowledge that disappoints some fans. Before details of Rises’ plot leaked, the nascent comic book Twitter theories of the era imagined Bale’s Batman opening the movie still running from the Gotham City Police, and fighting the next war.
Instead Rises begins with the war over, and Bruce all the bitterer for it. It was a large pill to swallow for fans who dream of Batman as a crusader always ready for the next robbery, mugging, or burning building. They wanted to see Batman fighting serial killers who leave riddles, not as the Phantom of Wayne Manor, and then as a retiree who’s conquered his pain well enough to enjoy a glass of wine in Italy.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
For those disappointed, Matt Reeves’ The Batman looks poised to offer the follow-up they wanted a decade ago. But Nolan’s choice to depict a Batman who had the vision to see the big picture, and to then walk away from it, remains satisfyingly singular and whole.

How do you think the Beforus Ancestors(Aradia, Tavros, Sollux, Karkat, Nepeta, Kanaya, Terezi, Vriska, Equius, Gamzee, Eridan and Feferi)were like? I love your Alternian Ancestors stuff so far and was curious what you Interpretation of the Beforus ancestors were.
oh HELL yes I am about this.
Aradia Megido, the Tombkeep: I see Aradia as being born a bit later than the others, while the coddling laws are at their strongest. Rather than put up with that, as quickly as she can she removes herself from Beforan society to the very outskirts. Like their Alternian counterparts, Beforan’s are often avoidant of the notion of death. However, in their case, it is not because death is a failure of the dying, but a failure of those around them. It is not seen as a natural cycle but something to be abhorred and feared at all costs. As such, tombs are kept, but they are far away from the rest of civilization and usually talked about in hushed tones. Aradia grows up among these tombs, befriending the local ghosts and considers them her own coddling charge. She guards the tombs from any who get too curious, or more often, from well-meaning government officials looking to tear down monuments to such “nastiness”. What they find instead is an angry little girl with powerful psiionics. She becomes something of a bedtime story for young grubs, even long after her passing. They say she still haunts the halls.
Tavros Nitram, the Menager: In parallel to his obsession with Fiduspawn, I see Beforan Tavros as being some variety of animal handler, using his fully fledged wings (and his bronzeblood bankroll) to travel the world and collect rare and exotic creatures to his own plot of land, to tend to and train. Some know him as a kindly soul, treating all beasts with the utmost love and dedication. He seems like some kind of fairy tale figure, surrounded on all sides by animal companions who he communes with. To others, this is reckless ecosystem mixing, but then, what do scientists know anyways. He prefers the hero title a bit more, as it aligns more with his intentions anyways. Eventually one of his expeditions ends poorly, with him being confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. Outwardly he dies content to let his coddler and his animal friends care for him for the rest of his life, but there’s a restless spirit that he passes down to his descendant.
Sollux Captor, The Dronebee: Completely and utterly unremarkable in every way. Sollux contented himself with working his function as a goldblood. His technical ability was fostered at every turn by a Beforan education system eager to see a lowblood embrace their “natural talents”, but while he made minor waves in the programming circles in which he moved with his often unique approach to coding, to most he was just one worker among thousands, very valuable of course! Every worker is valuable :) But ultimately.....not worthy of notice. Which is fine: that’s how Sollux likes it, and more than that if left him time to pursue more personal projects, such as a little game later known as sgrub. Just because he’s not vocally complaining doesn’t mean he’s not compiling a list. From his perspective, Beforan civilization is a ticking timebomb anyways. Why shouldn’t he be the one to start the countdown?
Karkat Vantas, the Advocate: Look, I know we all love revolutionary Karkat, but I think something we forget is that Karkat was pretty pro-system even as late in the game as Act 6. So, for the Beforan model.....well, every system needs its bootlickers. Karkat Vantas becomes a mouthpiece for some lowblood lobbying groups, acting in vocal support of the Empress’s coddling plan. Its not all love of power: legitimately there is a part of Karkat that tries to see how this is good. Healthy. The needs of his friends are being met, they’re safe, and attended to. Surely all of that is worth a little......infantilization, right? He deals with a lot of criticism from other lowbloods for being a sellout, and though he does his best to cultivate a calm unflappable demeanor so craved by Beforans, I guarantee Beforus has more than a few Grubtube compiliations of Vantas meltdowns that Kankri watches when he needs a good cringe. As he got older he slowly began to question the system he’d spent his whole life building, but ultimately lowbloods don’t live long enough for those kinds of regrets.
Nepeta Leijon, the Believer: What, you think clowns have the monopoly on weird religious communes? Nah. To be fair to Nepeta, her commune’s status as a “cult” is probably more indicative of Beforan prudery than anything else. Her sect, the Righteous Assembly of Withdrawn Renegades (or RAWR for short), is dedicated to the principles of free love and a return to the natural. Within the massive tunnel and cave system in which they live, trolls are free to strip themselves of signifiers like caste and clan and live as the gods intended: covered in dirt, chasing something furry, and flirting furrociously :33. While Nepeta in life insisted there was no leader it was her effect on people that kept them coming back for more, and while the commune purrsisted after her eventual death, ultimately its membership dwindled. Meulin was brought up among some of the last vestiges of it, and some of their old hideouts have been inherited by the Lost Weeaboos.
Kanaya Maryam, The Prioress: Literally, the prior. One of the earliest trolls, widely considered the Matriarch of Trolls in some sense. In her time she revolutionized many of the practices of auxiliatrices, ensuring greater safety for the grubs and greater care for the mother grubs. Many of the norms now in place for jadebloods are in large part due to her own influence. Despite her farreaching influence (and the fact that she left behind a journal of her practices), not much is known about her personal temperament. Quick readers may catch a certain dry sarcasm behind her words, and the especially studious scholar may note slight reference to a few great lovers (and a few great disappearances, *cough* rainbowdrinker *cough*. Her greatest secret is her brief and tumultuous kismesis with Vriska Serket, notorious Mafiosa, but only a very few historians have ever uncovered it. In part, her long shadow may have contributed to her descendant’s eventual anxiety regarding her prescribed role,
Terezi Pyrope, the Gumshoe: Beforan justice is tricky. As opposed to Alternia, there are in fact actual laws in place that aren’t just “don’t fuck with highbloods”, but in many ways its almost more corrupt. More often than not the courts are more concerned with petty infractions than it is with actual injustice, and furthermore, inter-caste tension remains a huge concern that bubbles up in violence. After a few years badgering olives for traffic tickets while watching actual fully fledged crime families get off scott free, well....Terezi had had enough. She took her pursuit of justice into the real world, working as a private detective for hire. She’s notorious for her, erm....quirks, but she’s a fastidious hunter and a careful investigator when she wants to be. She brings em back alive. USU4LLY >:).
Vriska Serket, the Mafiosa/Mapm8ker: Let’s be clear, a lot of Vriska’s society was laid on top of her and it was abuse from which she struggled to free herself. However, what does one do when freed from society, but seek to shake things up a bit. She’s still a thief of Light, make mistake, and she slowly works up the ranks from card shark working the tables to in charge of a small army of foot soldiers, smuggling mindhoney to goldbloods (who have been restricted “for their own good”) and sopor slime to clowns. She’s the flamboyant head of her own criminal empire, with the code of only stealing from those she deems worthy and a reckless approach to life
However, most of that isn’t generally known. And to the outside world, she’s just a simple cartographer, travelling the world to assemble some nice, safe, boring maps. Indeed, when her journal was finally unearthed by her descendant, she couldn’t help but wonder if these exploits were true, or simply a story her ancestor liked to imagine herself into on her off days. Tough to say.
Equius Zahhak, the Showpony: Alright, y’all knew I couldn’t stay away from that one. Equius was something of a puzzle to his descendent when Horuss actually went back through his (meticulously kept) caste records. By all accounts, he was an intelligent, capable, hardworking man. A tinkerer in his off hours, he was a pioneer in the field of robotics, and by all accounts not romantically unsuccessful. And yet, the man never seemed concerned with making a name for himself. Instead, over the course of his long life, you could perpetually find him at the shoulder of someone more powerful and important than he was. Was he....a bodyguard? Trophy husband? Butler? Hard to say, but there he was. Trotted out like the loyal steed he was.
Gamzee Makara, the Borrower: A peculiar legend of clownery regards a strange “hobo looking motherfucker what will wander into your hive and be all and snatching up your most secretous things for the messiah’s wider purposes”. So far as is known, he is not malignant, although its not unknown for a troll to occasionally disappear while running after him to retrieve their stolen items. Even without that possible threat, its usually not worth it to chase after him: the things he takes have a way of ending up back in your hands, one miraculous way or another. Gamzee is an itinerant monk, wandering the countrysides. Some passerby he’ll occasionally offer aid to, or proverbs. Which might be helpful if anyone could decipher what they mean. Ultimately he’s a happy man, if prone to fits of temper and bouts of melancholy. Still, as he notes, he’s got motherfucking friends all over these globes :o) what’s a motherfucker gotta be lonely for?
Eridan Ampora, the Magician: Well.....the Empress doesn’t exactly need Orphaners. As such, the violets are largely left to their own devices. Given they’re often prone to creative endeavours, Eridan found his own outlet. He became renowned as an illusionist, and at one point his shows were capable of drawing large and massive crowds, who would gasp in awe at his tricks and wonder if the violet really did have a trace of magic in his blood. He seemed to like the idea, eventually penning a popular grubling children’s series about a boy with those very abilities (which eventually found its way into the young hands of his descendent). However, celebrity wasn’t necessarily the best mix with Eridan’s temperament. He was prone to some truly disastrous quadrant outings, as well as developing several more addictive habits to drown out the oddly oppressive loneliness that permeated him. These bad habits were only worsened by the worst thing to ever happen to Eridan Ampora: the internet. With access to videos of his performance, most were pretty easily able to spot the trick of it, and hell hath no fury like a cyberbullying teen going after a b list internet celebrity. He took it as a sign to swear off the craft forever and lived the rest of his life on book residuals, alone, drunk, and miserable
Feferi Peixes, Her Highness: Not as much to say about this one, as Feferi is the one we have the most information about. Like it says on the tine, she instituted the coddling system on Beforus. This was widely considered a Bad Idea by those victimized by it, but you couldn’t pay anyone in Feferi’s court to tell her that. The Empress is sweet tempered and excitable, it’d be like telling a child 12 perigree night is cancelled. Perhaps the great irony is that as Feferi gets older, the thing that frustrates her most is that it feels like no one takes her seriously as a person. Merely as a figurehead. Still, she lives her life on Beforus ultimately convinced this is what’s best for the greater good.

“Mike can you please pass the marshmallows?”
Eleven sighed, looking at her boyfriend - who was fully engrossed in telling a story to Will - across the campfire.
“Mike?”
No answer.
Max nudged her on the side, “Just use your powers - he’s too caught up in telling Will what happened in gym last week - which by the way was totally gross” Max shuddered at the story, remembering what Lucas had told her in very graphic detail. Eleven nodded at Max, she turned her attention to the bag of marshmallows by Mike’s leg, staring at it in complete concentration. She inhaled sharply, and the bag started to move towards her. She felt her nose start to trickle with blood as Max quickly grabbed a napkin and handed it to her.
Mike stopped mid-story, noticing the floating back of marshmallows out of the corner of his eye, and turned his attention to his girlfriend, frowning, “Hey, I could have gotten that for you”
“She called your name like 3 times nimrod” Max spoke with a dry tone.
Eleven quickly dabbed away at her nose, catching the bag of marshmallows as they landed in her hand. “It’s okay Mike, I didn’t want to interrupt you”
“Hey, hey hey! What did we say about using your powers! This is a strictly no power camping trip!” Hopper suddenly thundered, a tinge of anger in his voice. He appeared from one of the 3 tents that surrounded the campfire. Eleven looked up at her father, giving him an apologetic smile, “I’m sorry Hop” she quietly spoke.
He sat down next to her, taking the bag of marshmallows from her lap and shoving one in his mouth. “This is supposed to be a relaxing weekend with your friends alright?” his tone much more calm with his daughter.
Eleven nodded quietly, taking the bag back from Hopper’s lap and grabbing a marshmallow and shoving one on her stick. She grabbed the stick and outstretched her hand so that the marshmallow hovered right above the flame.
“Careful El, don’t put it too much in the fire or it’ll burn and burnt marshmallows are not tasty” Mike chided in.
“Hey, hey, hey! Guess who’s back with dinner!” a voice suddenly announced from the trees behind Mike and Will. Out of the darkness appeared Steve, Lucas and Dustin, a triumphant smile on their faces. They all had fishing rods under their arms, but Steve was carrying a large cooler. He placed it near the fireplace, landing with a loud thud.
“Oh shit, you guys actually caught something?!” Max exclaimed, walking over and opening the cooler.
“Why must you always doubt us Max?” Lucas huffed, taking a seat next Mike.
“Because you’re boys, and boys are always to be doubted” she retorted back. She glanced into the cooler and saw 4 large cods. She loved her friends - her guy friends, but she would get sick of their nonsense every now and then. She loved that she found a friend in Eleven. Although Eleven was still learning about the outside world, she didn’t mind teaching her a thing or two.
“Okay, wow rude Max, I’ve been nothing but nice to you” Steve interjected, taking a seat next to Hopper and grabbing a stick near the fire. He reached over Hopper’s lap and grabbed the bag of marshmallows out of Eleven’s lap, earning him a dirty look from her.
“You know you could have, asked her for the bag right?” Hopper stated.
Steve shrugged, shoving 3 marshmallows in his mouth, “This is quicker”
Max scoffed, “And you wonder why you don’t have a girlfriend”
“Okay one, ow, two aren’t you like 12? What do you know about boys?” Steve questioned, shoving more marshmallows in his mouth.
“Uh one, I’m 14, and two I’ve been dating Lucas for the past couple of months, I know plenty about boys … “ she trailed off, looking over to Lucas and Dustin who were engaging in a heated game of Chubby Bunny, shoving as many marshmallows they could in their mouth. Max rolled her eyes, “See what I mean?” she gestured over to them.
“Hey, hey! Idiots! Stop shoving marshmallows in your mouth, you’re going to choke!” Hopper exclaimed, getting up from his seat and snatching the extra bag of marshmallows off of Lucas’s lap. The two boys frowned, but were hard to take serious since their cheeks were all puffed up from all the marshmallows shoved in there.
Eleven quietly stood up and walked over to Will, who was surveying the chaos unfolding around them. Eleven liked Will, she enjoyed his calm presence. It was refreshing considering that Mike, Lucas, Dustin and Max could all be wildcards when they wanted. But not Will, he was always quiet, always standing in the background. Eleven took a seat next to him, a soft smile on her face as she adjusted her shirt.
“It’s nice isn’t it? To be away from it all for a bit” Will commented to her, continuing to watch as Max and Steve bicker, and Hopper scold Lucas and Dustin.
Eleven nodded, pulling her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around her legs, “Yes … I like being with friends, outside, I don’t have to hide”
Will nodded. He had been through a lot these last couple of months. With the mind-flayer taking over his body, Joyce though it’d be a perfect idea to go camping with his friends. It would be a good way for him to reset with those closest to him. That didn’t stop his nightmares though. His PTSD would occasionally reappear in the smallest way. Whether it be something tickling his neck, or a cold draft through his bedroom. He always felt like he was being watched by it - waiting for the right time to reappear and strike again.
“Have you been doing okay Will?” Eleven asked, turning her gaze to the small boy.
Will shrugged his shoulders, “I’ve been okay, it’s been a couple of rough nights here and there but - “
Will froze.
His face suddenly paled, his eyes went round as he pressed his lips in a straight line. He lifted his right arm and carefully reached over to the base of his neck, his fingers ghosting his skin very delicately. His stomach dropped, heavily, as if it were being dropped down a roller coaster.
He wanted to vomit, he wanted to cry.
Eleven quickly took notice of his behavior, placing her hand on his arm. Her eyes searching for his, “Hey, are you okay?”
Will quickly snapped back to reality, twisting his neck to look at a concerned Eleven. He wanted to scream, he wanted to tell her what he felt.
But he stood quiet.
He swallowed quickly, giving Eleven a quick nod. “Yeah, just a bug on my neck”
She gave him a half smile, squeezing his arm gently as she turned her attention back to Hopper who was trying his hardest to teach the boys and Max how to gut a fish. It was not going well. Eleven got up from her seat, now intrigued by the commotion around her as she stood next to Mike, looping her arm around his. But Will stayed seated, frozen, as fear slithered through his veins.
He knew that feeling, he could never, ever forget that feeling of dread, of emptiness.
It was back. The mind-flayer was back.

You stepped out of the warm shower, grabbing the white towel that hung from the door and quickly wrapping it around your body. You relished the feeling of being clean, feeling safe and warm for once in your life. You stood in front of the fogged mirror, wiping it down with your hand.
Taking in your appearance, you finally had some color to your face (besides the fading bruises). Your hair was glistening in the light, slicked back from being wet. You felt human, you felt normal for once. Glancing down at your wrist however, you knew that you could never really be normal. There was always going to be a part of you that was always going to be different. The three numbers etched on your skin proved it.
You sighed heavily, grabbing a smaller towel from the towel rack and quickly drying your hair with it. Grabbing a brush from the sink, you brushed your hair back, carefully drying the ends so that your shirt wouldn’t get wet. You put on the clothes that Nancy had let you borrow, a pair of athletic gym shorts that were a tad bit too small for you, and a large crewneck sweater.
You hesitantly stepped out of the bathroom where Nancy, Billy and Jonathan were quietly conversing. Billy still sitting on the couch while Nancy and Jonathan sat on the floor. Billy noticed you coming in and stopped mid-conversation, sucking in a tight breath as he did a double take, his eyes drinking in your figure as you took careful steps towards them.
The tiny pair of shorts showed off your long, toned legs, and if Billy loved anything besides a nice ass and a nice pair of tits, it was nice legs. He loved how the shorts showed off your figure, something that you were hiding underneath your other pair of clothes.
He would never admit this to you however.
“Hey, wow, you look so much better” Nancy remarked turning her head around to you, Jonathan nodding in agreement.
You looked down at your bare feet, pushing a strand of hair behind your ear, “I feel better, I feel refreshed. I’m just really tired” you spoke gently.
“Well, Jonathan and Billy are about to head home. I brought down some pillows and blankets so you can crash on the couch. We can regroup tomorrow since it’s Saturday and hopefully we can get in contact with the kids and Hopper”
You nodded at Nancy’s statement. The three of them promptly then stood up, it was nearing to be 12 AM and your body was absolutely wrecked. You couldn’t wait to fall asleep on a warm, cozy couch.
“Hey, I’m gonna let Jonathan out the front door. Billy you know how to go through the back door right?” Nancy asked the blond, who nodded silently at her.
“I’ll see you in the morning okay? Just be sure to stay quiet - I don’t think my parents would be too happy to know I’m housing you” Nancy said to you, giving you a soft smile. You let out a laugh, “Yeah that’d be weird to explain”
Jonathan gave you wave as the pair headed back up the wooden stairs, leaving you alone with Billy in the basement. He walked over to you, towering over your frame as you shyly looked away from him. He took out his unused cigarette from his leather jacket and placed it on his lips.
“One more light for the road?” he mumbled to you.
You frowned, looking up into his eyes, “Nancy said you can’t smoke in here”
Billy let out a chuckle, “One thing about me doll, I don’t like to play by the rules”
He leaned in closer to you, cigarette still hanging by his mouth. You licked your lips as you snapped your fingers, holding up the flame to his cigarette as he took a deep inhale, then a loud exhale.
There was silence amongst the two of you as the thick smoke dissipated in the air.
“Will I see you tomorrow?” you asked softly, tilting your head to the side.
His mouth twisted into a half smile. His mind quickly wandered back to a couple hours ago, how seemingly normal everything had been and in an instant he had suddenly been roped into this whole save the world plot with you. But he laughs to himself, his life had never really been normal anyways. He took the cigarette from his lips and stared down at you. He raised his free hand and brushed his fingers against the yellowing bruise by your eye.
You close your eyes, inhaling shakily as you lean into his touch. His calloused palm now rested on your cheek, his thumb making soft circles on your skin. His warm touch was something foreign to you, something you never knew that existed, a feeling that sent shock waves through your body.
Without saying a word, his hand quickly left your cheek. You opened your eyes and Billy turned on his heel and left out the back door. You stood planted on your feet as the loud roar of his camero left the neighborhood leaving you standing in the Wheeler’s basement in silence.
---
“Let’s spy on Billy!”
Eleven groaned, twisting her body over in her sleeping bag to face an eager Max who was wide awake at 12 AM.
“Max ... it’s super late ... I’m tired”
She weakly cracked open her eyes to see her red-headed best friend hovering over her, a wolfish smile on her face.
“Please, please, please! Last one, I know Mr. Wheeler wasn’t the most exciting person to spy on but Billy could be” Max pressed on.
Eleven sighed heavily, slowly sitting up and adjusting herself. “Last one okay?”
Max nodded happily, “Yes, last one, I promise”
Eleven reached over to her backpack and pulled out a black bandana, carefully placing it over her tired eyes. Max grabbed the portable radio that was by her sleeping bag and quickly messed with the knobs, until she reached a station that was playing nothing but static.
Eleven inhaled sharply and concentrated on the static. Her mind wandering through different channels until she reached a dark void.
Her feet splashed quietly as she looked around for Billy, but kept seeing nothing but darkness.
“Will I see you tomorrow?”
Eleven whipped her head around at the voice, trying to find where the source came from. She wandered around the void until she found Billy, his back turned towards her. She quietly tip-toed over to the blond, watching his movements carefully. Watching as he raised his hand and placed it on a girls cheek.
A girl.
“I - I see Billy ... he’s with a girl”
“Oh please tell me they’re not naked or anything” Max groaned.
Eleven ignored Max comments and continued to watch the pair. She watched the girl lean into Billy’s touch, his eyes intense as he held her cheek in his palm. Eleven had never seen Billy be so gentle with a girl before, let alone with anyone. If anything she was always told to stay away from Billy, but this, this surprised her.
She watched as Billy snatched his hand away from the girls cheek and quickly left through the backdoor.
The backdoor.
Wait, she knew that backdoor, she’s been through that backdoor.
“He’s at Mike’s house ... with a girl” Eleven stammered out.
“Wait, what?!”
Eleven quickly turned her attention to the girl standing there, frozen, as if being stunned by Billy’s soft touch. Eleven examined her features as she walked closer to her. Her face was bruised, her eyes weary, tired. She was wearing shorts that were too small for her, and a sweatshirt that engulfed most of her frame. She watched as you pulled up the sleeves from the sweatshirt, turning your body away from Eleven as walked away from her.
Then, she spotted it.
Eleven’s breath hitched, her eyes widening as she felt the blood drain from her face.
001.
There was the number, tattooed plainly on your wrist.
Eleven began to hyperventilate, the feeling of uncertainty gnawing at her stomach. She didn’t know what to do, she didn’t know what to say.
“El?! Are you okay?! El?!”
Eleven ripped off the bandana, blood streaming down her nose as tears began to prick her eyes. Her breaths were coming in short pants as she turned to Max, a worried expression written all over her face.
“What did you see?!” she stressed, there was panic in her voice.
“I - I saw ... my sister”

Once
a/n: OKAY here’s the losers club x dead ghost reader request!!! sorry it took so long to get up anon, but i really really hope you like it!!!
“I just wanted to call this meeting of the Loser’s Club to order, and raise my glass to the two greatest friends and happiest people who unfortunately couldn’t be with us tonight.” Bill said, raising his glass with a shaky hand. Everyone at the table looked at the two empty seats, feeling somewhat guilty. One was intentionally left, the other definitely was not, and was even less planned. Bev wiped away a small tear, and took a long sip of her beer. The moment each of the Losers besides Mike had moved out of Derry, all the memories from their childhood had been forgotten. Especially the summer of 1989. That was something not a single one of the losers’ had ever planned on delving back into, if they had a choice in the matter. (Y/N) (Y/L/N), a kind-hearted person with their soul on fire, had passed that fateful day in the sewer, at the hands of the goddamn clown.
“Beverly!” (Y/N) screamed upon seeing their best friend floating among the trash of the cistern. They looked frantically to Bill, Richie, and then Ben, searching for some sort of support in the way of getting Bev down.
“Here, climb up on my shoulders!” Bill said finally. (Y/N) looked skeptical, as if they were afraid Bill wouldn’t be able to do it, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and Bill was a lot stronger than he appeared. He hoisted (Y/N) onto his shoulders and they were able to grab Beverly’s ankle. They pulled her to the ground, her eyes iced over in a milky white fashion, her irises barely visible.
“Bev?” (Y/N) whispered, their voice cracking. No response. “Bev!”
“(Y/N) stop, shaking her isn’t working.” Richie put a gentle hand on (Y/N)’s shoulder, and guided them away, where they sat miserably. (Y/N) couldn’t help but feel this was all their fault. They should’ve kept a closer eye on Beverly, she was their best friend. (Y/N) shouldn’t have left her alone after the day of the fight. Richie left (Y/N)’s side, and rejoined the others in their efforts to wake Beverly up. They were all completely distracted, leaving an unsuspecting (Y/N) vulnerable. She watched as Ben kissed her, bringing her back to life, just as Pennywise was able to grab (Y/N).
Bill gulped down about half of his beer, and grimaced as he sat back down. The tension in the room was almost suffocating; being surrounded by strangers who were once your entire world, two lives stopped in the middle of a sentence, and six others that felt immense guilt that they could never quite shake, even before returning to Derry.
“Well, now that things are awkward, how is everyone doing?” Richie joked, attempting to cut the tension back a bit. Eddie just kinda looked at him, while the others stared into their quickly emptying glasses.
Everyone was not only remembering (Y/N), but Stanley Uris as well. Stanley, the Jewish boy with a strange sense of humor, who was extremely bright and very shy, and was the most different after the encounter in the sewers. He was separated. The only one who was separated. They found the woman who had been haunting his nightmares for a very long time preparing to eat his face, and was in the midst of it when they found Stanley, crying and shivering, screaming about how they had left him, and they weren’t really his friends. Patty Uris, and later Beverly, had confirmed he had in fact died at his own hands, after the phone call he received from Mike.
As the evening bore on, and more drinks and food began circling around the table, the Losers quickly became re-acquainted. Bill was a famous author, who couldn’t write a book ending for shit. Beverly was in fashion with her abusive husband, Ben was a rich architect, and Richie did was Richie did best, telling jokes. Doing voices. All of the Losers were moderately successful, but none truly happy in their own lives. Eddie had married a woman who was exactly like his mother, constantly worrying about him and his safety, not to mention coddling him. Mike had stayed behind in Derry and became the town historian, never leaving behind the traumatic memories as the other Losers had been fortunate to do.
“Yeah,” Ben grinned as he took a bite of his dinner. “(Y/N) was the best. She was always looking out for us.” The other Losers smiled fondly, and as you watched from a distance, you smiled too.
----------------------------
As the 6 Losers’ descended into the cavern, they each felt sick to their stomachs. Richie had violently thrown up not long ago, after sinking a hatchet into the back of Henry Bowers’ head. They’d made it this far, what did they have to lose?
So much more than they expected, unfortunately.
As they group got closer and closer to the face off with the demonic clown that had been terrorizing them since they were just 13 years old, each member couldn’t help but feel as though they weren’t alone, besides being surrounded by 5 other people from their childhood club.
The truth was your spirit had been trapped in the caverns for 27 years, unable to be at  peace until Pennywise was destroyed, and you saw that your friends had made it out safely.
“Are we all ready?” Mike asked, looking to the others. “Did you all get your tokens?”
“Mine is something I’ve kept with me every day for, uh, 27 years.” Ben said quietly, tossing the old yearbook page with solely the signature of Beverly Marsh into the flames.
Eddie took a quick final puff from his inhaler, and threw it in without a word.
“Yeah. I, uh, got a token from the Capitol Theater.” Richie sighed, throwing the token into the small fire.
“Dude, that’s metal, that’s gonna take forever to burn.” Eddie said, turning to Richie.
“Well yeah but so will your inhaler, plus the fumes from the plastic and stuff.”
“Same for Mikey’s rock, it’s-” Mike cut Eddie off by reaching out to join hands, just as they had when you were children, that day at the Quarry. The blood oath.
You stood behind Richie and allowed your hand to come to rest on his shoulder. You felt him tense up a little bit under your touch, but he kept his eyes closed and chanted with the others, quietly.
Slowly, they got louder and louder, as the deadlights began descending into the ritual box.
You removed your hand from Richie’s shoulder and stayed back, waiting with bated breath to see if the creature would finally be vanquished.
“Why isn’t this working?!” Someone screamed out.
“Keep chanting!” Mike yelled back.
They continued chanting, but to no avail. The Ritual of Chud had not worked.
The sound of someone -or something- snickering came from the misshapen shape behind the Losers, and out came Pennywise mixed with some sort of spider creature.
Mike looked like he was ready to cry, and the others immediately turned to him angrily.
“Tell them why your silly little ritual didn’t work!” Pennywise was saying, slowly circling the Losers club.
“Fuck Mikey, you lied to us again?!!” Bill rang out, sprinting in the opposite direction.
You narrowed your eyes, prepared to do everything in your power to help your friend’s one last time.
Holding your nonexistent breath, you watched as the Losers scrambled and avoided Pennywise’s claw-like daggers and pincers.
Everything was happening so fast, no one was sure what was happening. One minute everyone was running, then they all disappeared, hiding. Pennywise was getting frustrated and bored, they weren’t putting up the sort of fight he had been hoping for.
“Wanna play truth or dare? Here's a truth, you're a sloppy bitch! Yippee ki yaya mother f...” Richie yelled to distract the clown. Pennywise whipped around and opened It’s mouth, revealing the very deadlights that had entrapped Beverly all those years ago.
“NO!” You screamed, not prepared to watch the Loser’s lose anyone else, the way they had lost you.
Eddie looked down at the jagged piece of metal in his hands and repeated to himself what Beverly had said to him probably not even an hour ago.
“It kills monsters if you believe it does.” Eddie heaved the jagged thing as hard as he could, hitting Pennywise directly in the throat, and releasing Richie from the deadlights.
Richie hit the ground with a thud, rendering him unconscious.
“Richie, wake up! I did it, I did it Richie!” Eddie was grinning, shaking the man beneath him.
“EDDIE WATCH OUT!” You screeched, launching yourself in place of Eddie to distract the clown demon from his initial target.
Eddie rolled out of the way as Pennywise, though confused and angry, still aimed directly for Eddie’s chest.
“(Y/N)?! (Y/N)?!?!” He spluttered, not believing his own eyes.
He’d seen a lot of things in his life, but not once did he ever expect to see you after the funeral.
Hell, he hadn’t even remembered you until a few days ago, let alone recognized you from another world.
Richie was finally semi-conscious, and didn’t believe his eyes.
“Man, I must’ve really hit my head hard, I’m seeing (Y/N) again!” He said, rubbing the spot where he knocked his head on the rock.
“MOVE!” You screeched, attempting to stop Pennywise’s dagger attacks as best you could. He was still sputtering some fiery substance from where the metal pole had made contact, but that hadn’t stopped him quite yet.
From across the cavern, Bill rubbed his eyes incredulously. He thought he had seen you, with your (Y/H/C) hair flowing and your eyes burning, the same way they had when you were 13 years old.
Bill thought he had hit his head, or was seeing some sort of Pennywise-induced vision, or maybe some after effects from whatever root Mike had slipped into his drink a few days prior.
Mike smiled next to Bill, fully knowing you’d been around for quite some time. You’d visited him in a few different dreams on a couple occasions, reminding him that the 27 years had almost been up by the time Mike was seeing you again.
Beverly and Ben had been separated from the rest of the Loser’s and were wandering around a different part of the cavern.
Eddie still looked confused, trying to ask you several questions as you fended off Pennywise.
“Mike! You know exactly how to defeat this bitch, PLEASE! Wrack your brain, I can’t hold him off forever! I’m sorry!” You cried, quickly losing leverage.
Mike’s eyes widened as he recalled something very, very important that the Derry Natives had imparted onto him; “All living things must abide by the laws of the shape they inhabit.”
As Pennywise was still trying to get around (Y/N) in an attempt to gain access to Richie and Eddie, Mike stood up from his hiding space.
“We have to make him believe he’s small,” Mike said as the others joined him.
“Me? SMALL? I’m the eater of WORLDS!” Pennywise laughed.
“You sure about that, big guy?” You asked.
“I’m the EATER OF WORLDS!” He repeated, shrinking back slightly, snapping a pincer in Eddie’s direction.
“No you’re not, you’re just a clown.” Mikey said, advancing.
“EATER OF WORLDS!” Pennywise said again, a look of fear flashing across his features.
“CLOWN! CLOWN! CLOWN!” The Loser’s chanted, getting closer and closer.
“You’re just a stupid fucking clown.” You said from behind the Losers. Pennywise crumbled quicker and quicker, making feeble attempts to make the Losers stop. Mike proceeds to rip out his heart, and as they finally unite, the Losers crush the heart of the demonic clown together, and their nightmare is over. Finally.
Especially (Y/N).
The Losers’ turned from Pennywise’s smouldering ashes to face you, who began to glow.
“Thank you, guys. I’ll see you all in the future,” You said, tears streaming down your pale face.
They all smiled in a sad, confused sort of sense. None of them understood how they were able to see you again, or process the fact that you were able to help them by distracting Pennywise, then remind Mike of the missing piece.
You scanned the Losers over one final time, committing them to memory as you finally, and joyously ascended; only to be met by one Stanley Uris.

The Totally Not Normal Train Station
There is something to be said about the aura in a train station. People bustling to and from different places, unaware of how time stands still as they wait. There is something to be said about the people that use the train station located on E. Federal Dr. They are the type of people who care little for the rules of the universe or the rules of time.
For example, see that man with the extremely tall top hat? The one who looks like he came out of the 1850′s? His name is Michael Kain, he is not in fact from the 1850′s. He is from the 2080′s. Shocker right. Don’t worry, top hats don’t come back into fashion. He’s on his way to a convention.
Don't look shocked, here. Look at that woman in the sun dress, now I know what you are thinking, “Why is she wearing a sundress on this cold and chilly winter day.” It's because it’s not. In fact, she is currently living in last summer. I think she's on her way to meet her date.  How do I know? Look at the date on her ticket and the flowers in her other hand. Spooky right? Not really, I know her. She likes  to relive this one, not entirely sure why.
Look at that child over there. The boy with the blonde hair and the blue eyes, who is currently wearing a red striped shirt and jeans. You didn’t notice him before? No shocker there, that's the point. His job is to look as generic as possible. Why? I just told you, it's his job.
Now look at that dog over there, isn’t it cute? No nothing is wrong with the dog, it's just a dog I wanted to point out, sheesh. Now that alley cat over there, that ain’t no cat. Look at it closely, look at its fur, how it flickers in and out of sight? How it glides through the shadows, how no one notices it as it curls through their legs. It's familiar of course. And if there is a familiar there's a witch!
Look at that man over there, he is the only one who acknowledges it. What do you mean how do I know! Look at him, he keeps peering towards it as he reads that newspaper upside down, he is clearly the witch. Look at his bag, can you see the herbs poking out? Don’t worry, it's basil. Stop freaking out, Basil is used for protection, which he so clearly needs.
Ugh, look behind him, that man in the shadows, it’s a federal agent. Oh, come now, did you really think the feds wouldn’t be looking for him? What for? For magic use obviously! Of course, it's a bit too late for a protective spell, can’t do much against the law I suppose.
Now that woman over there is interesting, I’m not 100% sure what she is. I mean there are so many different races it's hard to keep track! No, stupid. I’m not talking about human races; I’m talking about aliens. She could be a martin, but they don’t usually appear as a woman. Although, that would be the greatest disguise.
Now, now. Ignore her, she isn’t looking for trouble, that person in the corner, by those trash cans, now they're looking for some trouble. In fact, from the looks of it, they're about to start a fight with the woman standing next to them. Of course, that won’t do anything, seeing as she's a ghost and last I checked you can't punch a ghost. Believe me.
Oh, here comes the train. No, don’t get on. It’s not ours, it's theirs. You clearly haven’t been here before. There are multiple trains that go through this station some are for us, and some are for the others. This one in particular houses the circus. No not a circus, THE circus. That woman in the corner is going to get on, so is that man near the stairs. It’s funny though, seeing as they are on opposing sides, of course THE train is the only place they will get any privacy! Star crossed lovers obviously. It's like you've never been in love with the killer clown of the opposite circus, whose leader is a master sorcerer who is threatening to kill your mother.
Oh, Look at that woman who's just come down the stairs. Her name is Emily Van Weber. She runs this train station. She is very powerful, so I wouldn’t talk to her. Of course, she is powerful, her last name is Weber? As in of the Weber family? As in the world best time weavers? Wanna know something funny? She was supposed to take over the family business, but then she took a trip to Venus and fell in love with this alien who I believes’ human name is Ken, so she ditched everything and made a bunch of  underground, illegal train stations, like this one, who defy the laws of time and space. She is technically wanted by the entire galaxy. She also runs an underground bunny smuggling operation. Yeah yeah, keep laughing, but there are times and places that don’t have bunnies and will pay a lot for some.
Now that man next to her is definitely not Ken. I think he’s Alexander Murdoch. The future president. Don’t worry, you won’t live to see him rule. He's super corrupt, but like he’s chill with the place existing, so long as we hook him up with 1920’s dishwashers. Hey! It's actually the most smuggled item in his time, you can make a load of money, and it's super illegal. Like “punished by death” illegal. Eh, I'm not sure why, I don't take trips to his time often, it's quite boring really, and by this time the protests have quieted and the people are complacent, which is clearly no fun.
Don’t look down trodden. Here, look at this badge. Yes, I know it looks worthless, but it's from a rebel group a couple of years after his “death”, don't question the quotation marks, and I am a part of it. They totally tear down the government and like it's pretty dope. Why wouldn’t I be? It's a rebellion!
Alright, quiet down, I want to hear their conversation. Well I want to know what type of dishwasher he’s looking for, so I can get it first. I'm going to sell it to him obviously. Ugh, okay so here's how the deal between them works, she doesn't need to get it for him, but as long as someone who works or uses the trains sells it to him then it's fine. Don't be like that, I am a part of the rebellion, I am also making money on the side. Yeah, it's a bit manipulative, but it's not like the rebels know about this place, besides we’ve tried to start a rebellion sooner, but there is only so much one can change.
Is that... Oh crap, Stand in front of me. No not like that, like this. Now don’t look at me, it'll blow my cover.  That woman over there, the one who just showed up, the one in the wedding dress. We aren't on great terms, in fact most of the people here aren't on good terms with her. She is probably going to her wedding, or well one of them at least. She is literally married to someone in each era. It keeps her cover up. She is looking for a way to bring her true love back. Doesn't seem hard I know, considering time means nothing in these parts. But here's the thing, her love doesn’t exist. Okay, okay, wait till she leaves and I’ll explain.
Did she get on the train? Good. That means she's headed for the 80’s, interesting.  Anyway, like her love used to exist, but then she was caught committing this suuuper bad crime, so they uncreated her? I can't tell you what she did, just that I helped catch her. Which, in hindsight I feel bad for, considering I kind of agree with her. But that's not important anymore, she can't be brought back because she no longer exists. Don't look so scared, you wouldn't even be able to commit the kinda crime that would get you uncreated, your body literally would not survive it.
On another note, have you seen that man that was standing at the stairwell, when she came in? He entered the train? Great, just great. Well I was supposed to meet him a couple years ago, thought I would explain myself to him, but seeing as he's already popped into the 80’s and I really don't like the 80’s, I’ll see him some other time. No, the 1980′s are fine, in talking about the 3080′s. It's kind of a mess. Don’t worry about it, just some mega virus turning people into mindless pigs. Eh, they figure it out, but y'know, a lot of people get sick, and I really can't deal with it.
Welp. Guess that's that. Where am I going? Nowhere, you’re leaving. Well, your train is here, and you have to go. Tell you what, if you find this place again, I’ll be waiting. I’ll tell you more next time. But for now, you have to go. Or else, you'll be here for another couple hours, and you don't have that kind of time. Heh, time.  Hurry the trains going to leave!
Goodbye! See you in a couple of years! Stay away from milk, trust me! Also stay away from your parrot. Oh, did I say that out loud?  Don’t worry about it! Bye!
As I said before, there something about the train station on E. Federal Dr. Just like there is something about the train Station on SW. Kentucky RD. Or on NE. Venusian St. It’s not the fact that technically these streets don't exist or that the train station cannot be found by those who don't deserve to find it. But rather. it's about those who are considered worthy of it that really make the place what it is. I mean, who decides that a smuggler, a ghost, a killer clown, a spy, an alien, and you are all worthy? The aura of this place, an aura filled with the weirdest of things, time and space and hope and power and love and hate. This aura that shouldn't exist, but does. It is the aura of the worthy, and only those who understand that enter.

-Dex is the one who usually encourages Penny to make friends, or is around when Penny tries to speak to someone, basically just to look out for her.
-The two sometimes have screaming matches when it comes to Dex telling scary stories, as anytime he says one, something weird happens. Penny is 100% Dex is cursed while Dex just think its a coincidence.
-The two go on picnics together at Lake-Side Village when both are stressed from matches. They usually snack on fresh fruit or whatever sweet Penny was able to make or find in the kitchen.
-If given the chance, they will goof off on a map and probably forget to decode ciphers. :’ D.
