Disclaimer: I love Kang Seo Joon with all my heart.

But boy, if you were one of my best friends, I would have told you to get your head out of your ass.

Sleeping outside his ex’s house, eating his food in his restaurant, integrating himself with all of Ji Woo’s loved ones - these behaviours are not normal. In fact, if it was anyone besides Seo Joon doing this, we would call it stalking.

It’s terrifying to see how dependant he is on Ji Woo. It is terrifying knowing how badly his mental health suffered and how his abandonment issues clearly worsened. It is of course not helped by the way Ji Woo left either, so thanks for that bud.

If this was real life, I would want Seo Joon to learn to be himself without Ji Woo. I would want him to realise he can stand on his own two feet and not need anyone. Instead, his unhealthy attachment may be romanticised.

I really hope his abandonment issues aren’t swept under the rug. I feel he is overdue completely exploding on Ji Woo (and according to the trailer we know that will be happening). No one can just take all this pain and do nothing but continue chasing the person who caused. No one - not even Kang Seo Joon.

I want someone to remind him that it is okay to feel these ugly emotions and to show them. Honesty is more than showing people your vulnerability. Honesty is being true to yourself about the hurt and anger you are feeling and communicating that. It is being true about your intentions and it is about knowing what you are worth.

Kang Seo Joon is worth so much more than camping outside his ex’s house, eating his food and forcing a place in his life. Kang Seo Joon is worth an honest and open love. I hope Han Ji Woo will be able to give that to him, but right now, he is too emotionally immature for that. It hurts but Kang Seo Joon needs to walk away with his final words to Ji Woo being:

“What you did to me is the worst thing a lover can do. Don’t use these words and my pain to allow yourself to pity yourself and hate yourself, so that you continue to stay away from me. Use my pain to open your eyes to what I am worth: An explanation. My pain shouldn’t have to do that for you; I should have been worth it from the start. If you can’t say it, then write it. Don’t keep me in a limbo like this, I won’t survive it.”

Hey Bird Boy!

I promised I’d write didn’t I? I’m missing you already, which is kinda stupid and cheesy, but true! There aren’t any other kids around now the holidays are over, so it’s just old people and super outdoorsy people who walk really fast with weird sticks and stuff, lame! Daddy lent me his crappy polaroid he uses for work so I can send you pictures and stuff so at least I’ve got something to do, they won’t be as good as yours but it’s better than nothing.

I tried to get a good picture but it’s hard to hold this huge thing with one hand and this is the best I could do but my teeth are totally starting to grow back so maybe I won’t look so dumb soon.. you can’t really see em but I can feel em poking through!!! It kinda hurts but I suppose we only have to grow em once so it’s not so bad. Growing teeth as a baby doesn’t count cos you can’t remember it.. how many teeth does your little sister have?!

I’m super looking forward to getting to know you properly since I can ask you stuff now! I’ll try n remember to ask you things instead of talking about myself the whole-time cos that’d be annoying to reply to, wouldn’t it?

By the way.. I took a bunch of pictures of my dad until I caught him laughing just to show you that he can be fun and nice, not always grumpy! He thinks he looks cool with his gold teeth but I think they make him look goofy, like a wannabe pirate haha!! YARRR!

I set Amber free cos I started to feel bad about keeping her cooped up in that tiny plastic box and I don’t think I’d like it if I were her, like how I’m starting to hate this stupid tower! I miss looking at her but I decided to start collecting fancy rocks instead since they’re not alive and don’t have any feelings. Dad digs up stuff for work sometimes so it makes total sense!! He said I’m not allowed to join him for that but we can do it on our own instead.. he bought me a big pretty one to start my collection, even though it’s kinda like cheating it still counts!

We found a birdwatching book stuffed in the back of the bookshelf looking for this notebook and dad said we should put some food out to see which ones we could spot.. they attacked him whilst he was putting the seeds out though so he said it was a stupid hobby and that he didn’t want to do it anymore. GET READY FOR THIS!!!

Ahahahahaahaaa I almost dropped his camera laughing at him and he took it off me for a couple days but it was totally worth it, please please pleaaaaase keep this picture cos I almost didn’t wanna send it to you so I could laugh at it forever and ever hahahaha!!!!

Oh, and I told daddy to take some pictures of me whilst I wasn’t looking like you do cos I thought it’d be neat, but I forgot I asked him to do it and got mad at him cos I was in my pj’s and my hair was all crazy.. it’s kinda funny I GUESS!! Plus, he said it made us even for me sending you the picture of him with the birds so here you go BUT DON’T KEEP THIS ONE!!

What’s your favourite sims death?

In all my years of playing, I’ve only ever had a total of seven Sims actually die on me, because until very recently, I’d never played any Sim for long enough (let’s just say that I have a low boredom threshold). All those have either died from old age (two), needs failure (one - oops!) and the ‘death by childbirth’ mod (four). So, I’ve never seen most of the possible deaths and can’t really say! It absolutely wouldn’t be death by cow plant though - those things seriously creep me out and are banned from my game!

Alpha CC or Maxis Match?

I’d say Maxis Mix - I sit somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?

Nope! If I have to work off those unwanted pounds, then so do they!

Do you use move objects?

More than you could possibly know. Especially to move toddlers up and down the stairs - because Sims can rarely get their act together to do it by themselves.

Favourite mod?

Always and forever ACR - couldn’t play the game without it. (I find instructing my Sims to woohoo just a bit too weird, so I’d rather they took matters into their own hands. And since I play a Wants-based game - as far as possible - I prefer them to take charge of their own family planning too.)

First expansion/game/stuff pack you got?

University. I got each and every EP and SP as soon as they were released, such was my addiction.

Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing?

Who’s your favourite sim that you’ve made?

I love them all as if they were my children. I do have a sneaky extra-big soft spot for Bertram and Jasper though. OK, they were born in-game, but I created their parents, so that counts - right?

Have you made a simself?

Who hasn’t? (They were pretty dull to play though.)

What sim traits do you give yourself? Animal Lover / Eccentric / Loner / Perfectionist / Socially Awkward / Unflirty If we’re talking TS2 ‘traits’ then I’d be:

Which is your favourite EA hair colour?

Meh, if you’re twisting my arm, then red.

My favourite hair colour of all is Pooklet’s ‘Brisance’.

Favourite EA hair?

I admit it, it’s still Fuzzy Long for lasses (although I do have a default replacement for it, as there are custom hairs that I like a lot more!), and Caesar or Short Gel for lads. The unisex Dread Bands also gets an honourable mention.

Favourite life stage? Young Adult, because that’s when life really starts to open up for my Sims.

Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay?

Oh, both, depending on my mood! I tend to go through phases of one or the other.

Are you a CC creator? In the dim and distant Sim past, I was once a pretty prolific creator, but I got utterly burned out by it, especially since I’m painfully perfectionist and nothing was ever good enough. So, creating now very much takes a back seat, and I’m mainly just having fun actually playing the game, which I never had time to do in my creator days.

Do you have any simblr friends/a sim squad? I don’t think I’ve ever had a ‘squad’ in any capacity! :D I appreciate each and every one of my mutuals that I've ever interacted with - they’re all lovely souls!

How has your “sim style” changed throughout your years of playing?

As soon as I first discovered CC (I played for a couple of years without it), I craved as much realism as I could get. I also had a serious grunge phase. Now, I lean much more into the bright, cheerful, Maxis aesthetic, since for gameplay purposes, I find that it suits the cartoony feel of the game much better.

Who’s your favourite CC creator? Too many to mention. I’m immensely grateful that there are still so many terrific creators making content for TS2.

How long have you had a simblr? Since 2012, I think? It was like a ghost town around here though for a spell in the middle.

Photoshop: cropping and running through @bepixeled‘s ‘Holy Colors Batman!’ actions.

What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next?

Sadly, this is a dream that can never be realised for TS2, but I’d like something similar to TS4′s Cottage Living pack (although EA’s interpretation of English country living bears absolutely no resemblance to the reality!). And rideable bikes and horses. And more BV holiday destinations; specifically something with a more European flavour (The Mediterranean! Scandinavia! The British seaside!).

What expansion/game/stuff pack is your favourite so far?

EP: University (for the extra life stage and all the opportunities it brings)

SP: Mansion and Garden (for the super build mode content) I’m not going to tag anyone, as I’m really late with this, but if you’ve not done this and would like to, please go ahead - I love getting to know my fellow Simmers better!

1. What’s your favourite sims death?

Hum, tough one. I guess being struck by lighting is pretty cool, not that I get to see it that often. Also being hit by a satellite, but I’ve literally never seen it happen in my game unless I cheat.

2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match?

Alpha, obviously. Although I prefer to call my style ‘semi-realistic’.

3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?

I used to, but now I’m like, nah. Let those sims have some meat on their bones!

4. Do you use move objects?

All the time, bruh.

5. Favorite mod?

If I only had to pick one, then Gunmod’s radiance lighting. Picked based on the fact that it’s always the first mod I get whenever I have to reinstall.

I think it was Nightlife? But my PC from back then was so weak that I couldn’t get the EP to work at all, save for a couple outfits that were randomly showing up in CAS.

Been pronouncing it ‘aLive mode’ ever since I started simming. I never even knew there was a debate about it until I saw a post on simblr some years ago.

What, just one? D: I have a bunch of faves, and you can probably tell who they are by the fact that they crop up in every new iteration of my game.

Never, nor do I plan to! Having a sim version of myself in the game would just feel weird.

I think it’s gotten more consistent? I’ve been trying to find a balance between realistic and cartoony cc to maintain that elusive ‘semi-realistic’ look that I’m so fond of, and I like to think that I have a pretty good grasp on it now, after so many years of simming.

One favorite cc creator? BRUH. I have a 10GB downloads folder, and you better believe every creator whose cc is in there is my favorite! 🤣

By offering a blood sacrifice on a full moon. Nah, kidding. No blood is spilled during my editing process, though it does feel that way sometimes, considering how effin' long it takes me to iron out all the small kinks that annoy me about my screenshots. I kinda hoped having a dedicated photoshop action would help, but it only speeds up the process so much, unfortunately. :(

For Sims 2? Dunno man. Maybe a higher-res remake with all existing EPs/SPs and all known issues ironed out. Which is probably never gonna happen, but a girl can dream, right?

i literally adore asks like this because i have so many aus and stories but when people tell me a list of their favorites im like ooooh ok i think i can see the sort of dynamic you like the most (at least in my writing) based on the things most of these aus have in common for example most of these feature a gruff, rough around the edges obi-wan --probably tattooed-- coupled with an earnest, pretty boy anakin who obi-wan is a tad unreasonable about. one of them is really into their age difference and the potential power dynamics there. it's probably anakin, but obi-wan is gonna get a lot of pleasure out of it too

this is sooooo valid we love a toppy obi-wan who wants to pinch at the bridge of his nose in frustration until his partner slips onto his lap and kisses away his worry lines even though he tries to remain grouchy etc etc

Hi, I saw you reblog a post recently about Daisy Jones & the Six and I wanna say I love the show as well as the book but there were so many differences between them that disappointed me. Anyway, do you think Billy and Camila will get divorced in the last two episodes? I’ve noticed that in the interviews, Camila has her maiden name Alvarez instead of Billy’s last name. Also, in the show she seems threatened by Daisy and says that if Billy loves her then that is when this ends. And we know that Billy has been a bad husband to Camila in the past as he cheated on her and in the show he does end up kissing Daisy. I know this may be messed up but I hope Billy and Camila won’t get divorced and that they’ll be endgame. I want the last two episodes to show that their marriage gets better and Billy learns to be a much better husband and father. This seems to be happening in episode 8 of the series as there’s several cute scenes between them and she’s even telling him about her day when they’re in a hotel room. And I shipped them so hard when I was reading the book as Billy did try to be a good husband to Camila after he got sober. And as I’ve mentioned, the series already had so many changes from the book and I want the last two episodes to pretty much follow the book. That would mean Billy and Camila would stay together and their marriage improves since that happened in the book.

There are a lot of changes the tv adaption made that I don't like, the one that bothers me the most is that they kind of erased all the love Billy has for Camila. For example, they didn't show the first song he wrote for her, Señora, or that he would call her even when he didn't have a penny, or how he took her and the girls to Disneyland, or that Aurora was written for Camila and Billy sang it to her, when that one is such a beautiful moment in the book:

And they took all the significance Camila has for Billy, and not just her but their girls too. I was very impressed with Billy in the book, because he actually changed after he got sober. And even though you can see there are multiple times he's about to relapse he never does, because it is as if Camila and his girls are his anchor.

I can see how much love he has for Camila, and the huge effort he's putting in being a better man for her, for being the man she deserves. To me billy's story is about how his love for his family is so big that it overules his self destructiveness and it's the thing that keeps him safe and whole.

I agree with you, I shipped them a lot when reading the book, they're my favourite couple from the book and I was so happy when they ended up together. I love them as a couple so much.

In the show they really made Billy worse, he barely talks with Camila, he never shares the songs with her. They turned him into an absent parent, that he isn't in the books. For example, in the show Camila says: he's never here (talking about their house) and when he's here he really isn't here. And in the book is the complete opposite, look at this quote:

So I'm pretty upset about these changes because I feel like they damaged Billy's character a lot, and his story.

As for the show, yes you're right they did show his love for Camila and Julia in episode 8 and as you do I hope they end up together and that during the last two episodes they show how much he loves his family. I don't know if that's going to happen.

From the spoilers I've seen they don't get divorced, and they do end up together at the end, so that's good. I just wish they wouldn't have changed so much from the books in regards to his character and the huge faith Camila has in him.

Further thoughts on Love Simon and its adaptational changes from Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda:

Simon’s family

The one change that jumped out to me while listening to the audiobook that I felt was absolutely necessary if adapting it to screen was cutting the character of Alice. It’s the lowest-hanging fruit, and you could absolutely do something interesting with Nora to keep some of Alice’s aspects in the character.

Which… they sort of did? I mean, ultimately, Nora in the film is a VERY different character than in the book. But this makes sense because:

They also drastically changed Simon’s parents. Or… they’re not actually that DIFFERENT, it’s just that the film cut the entire plot thread about them being overbearing and embarrassing. They’re still pretty much as overbearing and easygoing as they are in the book, but them learning from this isn’t really part of the film.

Oh, also, they did give some of Alice’s character traits to the mom, specifically the outspoken feminism stuff. It did feel a little shoe-horned in though.

That said, I actually do like the efficiency with which they addressed the ‘Jack makes jokes about gay people’ stuff. They brought forward the tension between Simon and Jack to ‘earlier’ in the story, and they did actually show him doing it a couple of times, without having it be a major throughline that would require more time from him.

So Simon’s family is different, but I think that makes sense. The throughline of the story is really about Simon, Blue, and their friends. Simon’s family is a secondary emotional and plot centre.

Leah and Abby

This is a small thing, but Abby lives on the way to school rather than far away in another direction. This is purely a cinematographic affordance, but it does make sense because they cut time from the later parts of the book’s story and so cut the need for Abby to be so far away…

But the main thing I want to talk about is [Leah/Abby]’s parents’ divorce.

In the book, it’s Leah’s parents who are divorced because her dad cheated on her mom.

In the film, they instead combined this character trait from Leah into Abby’s backstory of moving from DC. (In the book, Abby’s dad and brother are still in DC but her dad is looking for a job in Georgia still).

And… I have mixed feelings about this. I’m not thrilled about the way that this makes Leah, who was already the most opaque character to me in the book, into an even less-fleshed-out character…

But I do admit that moving that moment onto Abby (and effectively moving Simon’s ‘I don’t really know people’ revelation from the book WAY earlier in the film) gives a little more weight to Simon choosing to come out to Abby before anyone else. There’s a moment of very obvious connection there, and I think that works in a medium where we don’t have moment-to-moment narration of Simon’s headspace.

While talking about Leah… I think her having a crush on Simon makes sense, but I’m also not sure I like the adaptational change because it DOES make the falling out feel like it’s based on Leah being upset Simon rebuffed her… Which isn’t REALLY supposed to be the text there, but that is how it came across to me. Though it does at least give Leah more concrete motives and characterisation. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Leah is the book character who needed a second book to flesh out.

Teachers

This is quick, but the vice-principal is, bar none, my LEAST favourite adaptational change. He feels like he exists to serve the sole purpose of separating Simon from his phone once, but they kept him around to just be a bit creepy and weird… I think the film would ONLY be enhanced by removing this character, even if that left Ms Albright as the ONLY staff member with any significant screentime.

Speaking of Ms. Albright… “She doesn’t like men.” … Okay, first of all, I think the book did a much better job with this, because I KNEW Ms. Albright was a lesbian from the book, despite the book never outright stating it. And I even think the dressing-down she gives the homophobes later in the film does a good job of that too. It doesn’t HAVE to be explicitly stated, it can be implied and that can be fine.

Ethan and Cal

I’m lumping these together (though I will mention Cal again later) because I think there’s an interesting juxtaposition.

First of all: I’m not 100% sure how I feel about Ethan… I think the lack of out gay (male) students at the school was an important facet of the book… But I don’t think adding a single gay student actually breaks the larger point being made with that. And I will admit that it does allow some more pointed conversations later in the film between them. I actually quite like the Simon-and-Ethan scenes after the homophobe stuff.

But on the flipside from Ethan, a character who wasn’t in the book… We have Cal, a character who was BARELY in the film. And this one is more confusing to me.

I think partially they just didn’t have the bandwidth to flesh Cal out as much as he was in the book (which, admittedly, wasn’t a HUGE amount even then…) They made him the pianist for the play, which got him out of the spotlight of being stage manager, and then only really had him interact with Simon once, after the outing.

But the reason I’m putting him alongside Ethan is because… the film outright cuts Cal being bi. Which is… weird to me. There are no canonically bi or lesbian characters in the film, which feels like a let down because the book does discuss the different social ‘acceptance’ of gay men, gay women, and bisexual people within the emails (both actual acceptance as well as the ‘lesbians are hot’ trope).

Martin and the blackmail

Martin feels a lot slimier of a character in the film… I think some of that is probably just SEEING him doing the things he does, because he actually really isn’t written THAT differently at all.

But the more interesting thing to me is that in the film, Simon is MUCH more willing in helping Martin than in the book.

Not to say he doesn’t help Martin in the book at all, but the book goes to great lengths to show Simon trying to avoid committing to helping him get Abby, and also has Martin feeling like he’s not helping ENOUGH…

In the film, Simon EXPLICITLY agrees early on to help Martin, and is generally a LOT more interventionist in his friend group. He’s more forceful about pushing Nick away from Abby.

Oh, also, Martin tagging along WITH Simon and his friends to the party, instead of just showing up at the address… Does actually plug a plothole from the book that didn’t need plugging. How did Martin know where Garrett’s house was in the book? It’s explicitly stated that SIMON doesn’t know it.

The Blues

I think that having Simon imagine each of the Blue candidates in the situations they described makes a lot of sense as an adaptational change. Because the film doesn’t take place in Simon’s first-person perspective, and the long descriptions of Bram’s fingers and legs, or Cal’s hair and eyes… just would not adapt well. So I do get it.

I also don’t entirely disagree with the decision to cut Simon lusting after his classmates physically from the film. It ends up a point of contention with Blue in the book (actually one that feels like it fizzles out rather than resolving) that Simon is attracted to Cal, and the way the plot was chopped and changed in the film wouldn’t have really left bandwidth for that plot point…

Also, given the cutting back of Cal’s character, I was surprised to see that he was still a Blue candidate.

And upgrading Lyle from a character who is LITERALLY mentioned twice in the book in passing to being a Blue candidate, someone who clearly knows who Simon is, and a romantic false-lead for Abby… I think that worked. I’m actually surprised how I like that adaptation…

Also Simon and Lyle are the most awkward people in the world.

OH! And I’m glad that the film cut the part where Simon spirals over whether Blue really is Martin or not. That was excruciating in the book, and I think that adapting that into the film wouldn’t have worked.

Bram, in particular.

Bram’s characterisation is different…

He’s less reserved in person in the film, and some of the things that were part of entire email exchanges in the book (Oreos, for instance)… are just part of his character in the film.

This is an adaptational change that makes sense, because as we said above, the film is working with a more limited time to characterise Blue and we need to actually have seen Bram and Simon interact earlier in the film because we lose the post-reveal interactions between them.

(Simon and Bram get together about 80% of the way through the book. In audiobook terms, they are together as a couple for about 90 minutes, almost the entire runtime of the film. So it makes sense that Bram would need characterising earlier in the film.)

That said, I think Bram being a bit more outgoing and talkative loses something… Because with the adapting out of Cal’s personality too… this kind of removes the underlying ‘type’ that Simon has. In every Blue candidate in the book, Simon likes their reservedness that’s hiding hidden depths. Even with Martin, Simon finds his awkwardness endearing more than his outspoken aspects…

Changes to The Reveal and Fallout.

So, this is the main thing that had to be changed. There is just too much plot in the back half of the book that just couldn’t ALL stay intact or in the order it happened in.

First of all: Martin outright publishing the screenshots instead of just a bizarre homophobic text post… makes sense, but it also drastically changes the PLOT of the second half in a way that I think is ultimately worse.

Secondly: Simon’s friends falling out with him AT the same time as the reveal is… not my favourite choice. I completely agree that in adapting the book they needed to condense the ebb and flow of people falling out… But I don’t overall like the fact that Simon is outed AND loses his friends in the span of a week.

That one comes back to Nick… I think that if Abby found out about Martin’s blackmail FROM Martin as in the book, Simon could have been spared Nick a little.

But the main adaptational changes I don’t really like in this regard… are about Blue.

By having Blue delete his email address after the outing, we lose a really interesting power dynamic between Simon and Blue that is the throughline for the second half of the book.

In the book, Simon gets outed without Blue being directly involved… And over the course of the middle of the book, it becomes clearer and clearer to Blue who Jacques is. So for much of the middle of the second half, Blue KNOWS who Simon is, but still can’t tell Simon who he is, and that leads to a lot of tension both ways.

We lose that in the film.

And moreso than that, we lose the privacy of Simon and Blue’s relationship.

Book!Blue would NOT have taken well to Simon declaring his love for Blue publicly on CreekSecrets and arranging very publicly a meetup that EVERYONE would attend.

And yes, obviously, their relationship is public pretty soon after they get together in the book too, but I feel like the hope and intimacy of the moment works so much better when the ‘I know you’ email is a private thing between them, and not a public declaration. Again: Book!Blue is much more reserved.

We also lose the final 20% of the book almost entirely. We don’t get to see Bram and Simon on dates, or just existing together as a couple or fooling around in the auditorium… And this is a sacrifice that is made in the film for runtime reasons and because the way film narratives climax doesn’t lend itself to a long dénouement… But it feels like a real loss, because ultimately SEEING Simon and Bram being together is the payoff for the several hours of seeing them making their way there.

Was this the right medium?

I don’t think that a film was the right way to adapt this story, ultimately.

The book is semi-epistolary. 13 of the first 26 chapters are JUST email exchanges between Jacques and Blue, and there are more emails later in the book too. The narrative of the book has multiple conflicts and resolutions throughout, underneath the overarching plot…

I think the best adaptation of this book was not as a 2-hour film. It would have been as a 3- or 4-hour series. The emails work as a framing device, a series would have allowed more room for narration and imagination spots, we could have seen more of EACH of the Blue candidates.

Obviously, a series would still have required significant rewrites and adaptation… You couldn’t have had the final episode be JUST Simon and Bram happy together, for instance, and I think you’d still have cut out Alice from the plot…

But I think that there are ways to rearrange the book into a series format that keeps the soul of the story a lot more coherently than the film did.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence on that front that the next story in this universe on screen was a series instead of a film.

which, I’ve gotta say -- considering I only watched it for the first time... in late August of this year? -- I think I’d already internalised this idea of the show “still finding its feet” in that season/generally not being as good

however while this is true in the sense that there are some concepts that are rougher now/better explored in later stories + character things that definitely don’t exist later on (Hawkeye mentions “mom and sis,” and Radar smokes and drinks I think are the two I noticed the most... there’s also Henry’s wife giving birth in showtime, which I don’t think is ever brought up again, but I can include it in my show canon)

anyway, a lot of character stuff and concepts persist! 

the “dear” episodes of course, the depiction of the army as both inherently ridiculous and dangerous (the ringbanger, the army-navy game, tuttle) feels pretty consistent, even some early experimentation in episodes like yankee doodle doctor and showtime (which, I take back my previous post, showtime also feels like a season-ending episode, so that makes it s1,3,5,7 for me so far). And Klinger made appearances much sooner and more consistently than I remembered. Even that early on it feels like the writers could tell that character was something special

then there’s Hawkeye becoming Chief Surgeon in episode 4 already, early seeding for Margaret to become more friendly with especially Hawkeye (although they’re right in showtime -- she and Trapper always seemed to have a tension... she shoulda given some % of the perfect guy to him, she and Hawkeye bonding over wanting to lowkey bone Trapper), and Mulcahy’s series-long arc of not feeling like he’s necessary in comparison to the others in the camp

an early couple of entries into the “Hawkeye’s brain works a certain kind of way” with “yankee doodle doctor,” “bananas, crackers, and nuts,” “tuttle,” “sticky wicket,” “major fred c dobbs,” and the whole nude-camp-walk in “dear dad again” especially

a lot of same-sex flirting, including some of my favourite scenes, such as: Hawkeye and Trapper dancing, Hawkeye kissing Frank -- on the forehead and on the mouth, Hawkeye warning Frank that he’s going to call an usher if he doesn’t stop walking his fingers up his thigh, Hawkeye and Klinger discussing gaudy outfits, Hawkeye telling Trapper he won’t go home with him just because he gets him drunk, Hawkeye and Trapper flirting in Margaret’s bed, and Hawkeye telling the general he wants his baby, and also general vibes, such as Tommy saying young Hawkeye was “a bit of a sissy,” Hawkeye giving Trapper his long-johns because of one pathetic cough, and the way Hawkeye grabs the back of Trapper’s neck in relief and support in showtime

and then of course the first suggestion of the show’s overall trajectory with “sometimes you hear the bullet,” but would argue particularly “yankee doodle doctor,” “ceasefire,” “sticky wicket,” and “showtime” are also strong indications of that

a question of time, ch 1

Firm, withholding the worst of her disappointment for his benefit; still, his pervading thought was that she hadn’t looked at him for more than a few seconds at a time, as though avoiding him—or perhaps avoiding the ghost of someone else. Instead she’d spoken to the roses she tended, blooming a glorious, vivid crimson, and let him overhear.

occasionally I’ll write a line and it just captures exactly what I ✨see✨. this last line, Amanda not even caring enough to look at Sixty, so consumed by her garden, was that. her disinterest… Sixty, like Connor, looking for approval and finding none… sigh. it’s the perfect starting point for him. not even doomed, just… inconsequential

all of ch 6 of aqot was a Struggle, but in terms of interesting style/formatting I was super happy with how it turned out. the non-chronological order worked out far better than I’d hoped. I cant add any more aqot without spoilers, so I’ll leave it there 😏

last call, ch 2

In their usual seats by the bar, Connor and Hank sit, locked in rapid fire conversation. Hank’s nursing something that looks suspiciously not like his favourite whiskey, which tells you they’re not celebrating, and Connor’s gesticulating as he speaks, his face animated and expressive.

Hank makes a comment, punctuated with the sway of his glass, and Connor laughs at him, his eyes bright; the loose collection of colleagues around them laugh too, following his lead, and you’re caught in the sound, isolated against the background noise of the bar, bathed in colour by the string lights above.

okay so I’m sure you pointed this one out to me before buuuut… it feels exactly the way I wanted it to. it’s a warm moment watched from a distance. I feel like it subtly catches character without being too weighed down with description. I’ve been working recently on trying to build up scenes and atmosphere without getting caught up in length prose, and this one shows a nice balance, I think.

1- Flora and Helia, they were my first OTP. Headcannons, Flora steals all of his cardigans but he can’t even complain. They inspire each other’s art, they’re just so cheesy and in love it’s great. Saladin adores Flora and just think she’s perfect for Helia. Helia helps Flora with her garden. Flora cuts his hair. They eventually move to live in Lynphea. They have a lot of picnics and hikes. Helia will always get her flowers for her hair and overall be super cheesy. She loves to just hold him and loves his cologne.

2- Aisha and Nabu (I will never forgive Rainbow for what they did), Headcannons, despite being very chill, Nabu will join Aisha on whatever catches her eye be it swimming with sharks or jumping off planes. He helps ground Aisha and it takes her a while before she genuienly believes that he’s there to stay. She teaches him how to dance. He organizes little surprise hikes and little adventures. The only time that Aisha can stay still for more than an hour without getting ansty is when she’s in his arms.

3- Musa and Riven (Rainbow did them so dirty, tbh, they’re only so high because of the potential they had, if this list was exclusively about what we see in the show, they’d be num 5) Headcannons, They’re both touch-starved so they’re constantly touching, be it Riven always having an arm around her or her sitting on his lap half the time. It takes them a long time to learn to be vulnerable and communicate when something bothers them but they eventually get there. She teaches him how to play the guitar. Musa paints his nails from time to time and he refuses to take the polish off. She writes almost all her love songs about him (not that she’d ever admit it to anyone other than him).

4- Tie between Tecna/Timmy and Stella/Brandon (s1-s3 it’s Stella and Brandon, s4-s6 it’s Tecna and Timmy)

Tecna and Timmy Headcannons, their love is very much about the little domestic things. Timmy makes her coffee when she’s working on a project, she cleans his tools when he’s tired, Timmy learns how to make her favorite meals, Tecna cleans his glasses because Timmy won’t clean them unless he straight up can’t see anything. Tecna is ready to fight anyone who even insinuates that Timmy is somehow less than the other Specialists. Timmy accomodates to make Tecna comfortable in any situation and to keep her from being overwhelmed.

Stella and Brandon Headcannons, he gives her massages whenever she’s tired, especially after she becomes queen. PDA. They keep up their flirting game from s2 until they get married (mostly so that the media doesn’t start making rumors about cheating) Stella almost decapitates one of her diplomats when they insinuate that Brandon’s useless. Brandon helps Stella through panic attacks when she feels like she doesn’t know what to do. Stella loves laying on the balcony with him to look at the stars and just talk.

5- Bloom and Sky (Another couple done dirty, s1-s3 they were great but after that… yeah) Headcannons, he loves playing with her hair. They love to travel to different villages of Eraklyon to help out in any way that they can, all of Eraklyon loves Bloom. Sky is one of the only people that can calm Bloom down after a particularly bad nightmare. Sky really bonds with Mike, Mike calls him son and Sky almost starts crying. Sky still has nightmares about the things he did under Valtor’s influence. Bloom will find him awake at 4 am and just hug him and remind him that it wasn’t his fault.

Wyler vs Wenclair: If we’re looking at just the ships themselves I genuinely don’t think I have a favourite. I started in the Wenclair fandom but I tend to interact with the Wyler fandom a tad bit more these days. I love them both so much it hurts. But if I HAD to choose probably Wenclair because my favourite character is Enid and I’m going to get a lot more Enid content with Wenclair than I am for Wyler. Also I’m just a femslash kinda girl. 80% of my ships since I started in fandom at 11 have been femslash. Likely because I’m bi and complex queer women that actually interest me are hard to come across in media. And I already read a lot of published romance books that portray straight relationships that I enjoy so it would hurt slightly less to give up Wyler. SLIGHTLY! But I’m not happy about you making me figure that out. I’ve been sitting here for like 20 mins already.

Wyler vs Tynid: Wyler probably takes the cake here. Emphasis on PROBABLY. But because we have very little canon Tynid content it harder to make content about them and it’s a rare pair so I rarely come across other people making content about them either. Whereas Wyler has a very active and engaged community and that’s what fandom and shipping is all about. Like to an extent I already don’t have Tynid (when something does pop up it’s the best thing ever though). Also despite the lack of Enid (rude and unacceptable) Wyler as a solo couple has a very intriguing dynamic that is a lot of fun to pay with. They’re dark romance and obsessive devotion and that’s what I live for.

Now that torturous occasion is over (WYCLAIR ENDGAME) the rest of these are a lot easier to answer.

Enid x Ajax: Not really? I don’t have anything against it. I love Ajax and Enid really seems to like him. They’re cute. But I’m weird about Enid ships. I have a very specific idea of who Enid is and what type of relationship would suit her in the long run. And Ajax is too chill for Enid in my opinion. I think she’s better with someone who’s as intense as she is. Someone a little less hinged. Ajax is sweet and I think he makes a very good first boyfriend. That guy you go to school dances with. That you remember fondly. That very rarely upset you. And who was always by your side, holding your hand. Your first kiss. Maybe even your first time. But it’s as if something is missing. Love isn’t sweet. It’s intense. It’s obsessive. It’s always burning and sometimes it hurts like a bitch and you feel like your drowning. But it’s also fucking everything and it’s what makes life worth living. I’m in a ranting mood apparently, but to summarise, for some people sweet is enough, but I don’t think Enid is one of those people. It’s a valid ship but it’s just not for me.

Bianca and Lucas: Love it. Underappreciated ship. Will be writing it into the Wyclair fake dating AU. We haven’t seen much of them but from what we have I think they’re really compatible.

Yoko and Divina (Yokovina): Also love it. You’re obviously from the Wyler fandom and not the Wenclair fandom because A LOT (tbh literally all of us) ship it. It’s a big thing. You should check it out. Both of their screen times were lacking so most of the headcanons I have about them have come from their fandom curated personalities. But they’re endgame. I won’t take arguments about it.

Pugsley and Eugene: They’re already besties. They haven’t met but they’re inseparable. Wednesday herself thinks they’re super similar and she would know. Plus they’re both lacking in the friendship department and Pugsley would corrupt Eugene and I’m here for their antics. Also headcanoning that Pugsley has a crush on Enid too, and Tyler and Wednesday are like… you’re lucky we love you. You’re the only two people who could get away with that.

002 | Give me a character: ANDERS

How I feel about this character: Ugly baby. Perverted old coot. I love him. He is like... simultaneously the most self-absorbed bastard and the most selfless giving person. Absolutely beautiful. I think Anders is a man/character of dichotomies, and I think despite some issues the narrative really gets that across well.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Merrill. Fenris. Justice. Hawke. Not sure if the canon version of this romance is any better than any of the others, but it’s definitely awful in a funnier way for me personally. And noncanon Hawke you can of course do great things with. Carver. Bethany. Basically whether these two end up in the Circle, or with the Wardens, you have an immediate in for thematic relevance and shared experience with Anders. He’s my favourite person to ship each of them with. Sigrun. I don’t have a justification for this one. Just think it would be cute. Nathaniel. Mmm, same. I’ve seen other people write this well in a way that makes me want to say I ship it, but I can’t exactly pin it down. Leliana. I mean, they don’t talk in canon. And I don’t think I can ship her Left Hand of the Divine self with Anders. But, like- canon diverge before that? Think about it. They both wanna be Andraste. They’re both wildly heretical Andrastians talking about love and compassion and justice. They need to kiss about that.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I’m going to say Justice? Like, I think their connection is romantic, but it’s sometimes hard (for me anyway) to get that across when they’re sharing a body, so I don’t think of it in quite the same way. I think despite all the dysfunction in their relationship, Justice and Anders really managed to be what the other needed through some hard times and I think there is some genuine longing there where Justice loved that Anders’s hedonism could coexist with the goodness of his cause and his compassion, and Anders was inspired by Justice’s courage and sense of morality and responsibility. I’m glad Anders has Justice, even in playthroughs where everything else goes wrong for him. I guess also Isabela? In the sense that I think they’re fun to put in a room together and bounce off one another. I think they make good friends-with-benefits too, but I don’t think they especially want to be emotionally intimate with one another. Anders doesn’t really respect Isabela and I think Isabela has very little patience for Anders’s drama so :/  But I like that they seem to manage to coexist in a working relationship quite well despite that. I like how Isabela seems to know how to handle him without taking his shit personally, and see the good in him without enabling him overmuch.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Idk, he’s a jackass, but I don’t think he was wrong about bombing the Chantry if it helped end/stymie the prison labour system in Southern Thedas? I guess something more specific? I don’t think he’s a character that’s easily satisfied. I think he’s reckless and self destructive and loves testing people’s boundaries. I’m writing a fic where he’s cheating on my OTP for all of the above reasons. I feel like ‘Anders would cheat on my OTP’ is probably an unpopular opinion, but it probably says more about me than him, lmao.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I think there are probably a couple answers I could give to this but I think #1 is just better acknowledgement of who Anders was and what he was up against? I dunno. The real thing I want is for da4 Fenris to wryly talk about how much he hated Anders in Kirkwall and now he’s essentially become Anders - a freedom fighter raging against an uncaring slave labour machine and aggravating the people he talks to with problems they don’t know how to help - and isn’t it strange and wonderful and awful where life takes you? I think it would be ironic.

my OTP: Anders/Merrill & Anders/Fenris. I often ship them simultaneously in a polyamorous sense, but not always. I talked about both of them in this post.

a headcanon fact: There’s canon dialogue reasons not to, but I think most people headcanon Wynne as Anders’s teacher in the Circle, and I’m no exception. I feel like her ‘boys will be boys’ attitude in Origins really jives well with a lot of Anders’s worse qualities, lol.

002 | Give me a character & I will tell you: OGHREN

How I feel about this character Worst boy, best boy <3  What a pathetic old war veteran who got chewed up by the system and spat out and left for dead. Also he’s terrible!

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Nobody really. No one deserves that, especially not Felsi. Okay, I lied. Wrote a fic once where he had a thing with Stroud and a fade spirit named Fury. Also he totally has a weird little crush on Nathaniel Howe (and maybe Anders too). It would be nice to explore more of that in ways that would cause brain damage for everyone involved >:)

My non-romantic OTP for this character: He and Zevran have a funny little set of banters going. I like how amused Zevran is by Oghren trying to negotiate this grudging respect for him. And I like Zevran trying to get him to laugh with the joke about an elf and a human and a dwarf talking about wiping the piss off their hands. Also Branka, to be honest. Theirs was obviously a very unhappy marriage, but I do genuinely like Oghren’s involvement in Paragon of Her Kind, and how he obviously seems to love and revere this woman and care about her when everyone else has given up on her. I love the way he’ll unreservedly call her a genius, and genuinely be upset if the Warden elects to kill her. Pity she doesn’t seem to return any of that affection.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I like him. I think he’s great for the duration of Paragon of Her Kind, as I said above. I think he definitely overstays his welcome after that though, between the rest of Origins and Awakening. Especially since Origins itself is saturated with a lot of Warrior characters when you really only want one in your party to draw fire.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish he’d gotten a little more depth following Paragon if he was going to stick around. I think it’s frustrating that the writers seemed to think he was hilarious when the rest of us seemed to only see a sad pathetic alcoholic who takes out his disappointments with the world by sexually harrassing the people around him. I’m not even sure what I expect because I don’t even *need* him to get better, especially when he clearly doesn’t want to. But I wish there was a way to engage him less shallowly.

a headcanon fact: He thinks that Chasind honey mead is TOO SWEET and obviously for PANSIES & LITTLE GIRLS. But he still likes it. He sips it in secret at night and thinks of the honey termites in Orzammar.

002 | Give me a character & I will tell you: LELIANA

How I feel about this character: She is... the first character I romanced in this series. But I’m not sure it left me with many strong feelings about her. I think the back and forth the first game has about whether she fabricated her vision of the Maker entirely was interesting. I find her need to mythologise the world and the events of her life kind of frustrating, especially where it concerns turning Marjolene’s abuse of her into a tragic romantic epic. Though I think she is allowed to make sense of her life that way, if she chooses, I do find it alienating. I also think her association with the Chantry as a spearhead for its Imperialism is frustrating in DAI and subsequent additions to the series. Not that I consider it out of character, but it is a slap in the face imo for people who romanced her as Amell/Surana/Tabris/Mahariel. Definitely grounds for divorce.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Morrigan. It’s definitely fun to contrast their worldviews. And, of course, to get Leliana to use her comparative savvy and experience to get Morrigan begging >:) Zevran. It’s fun since they’re both bisexual killers for hire who like shoe shopping. Warden. I think most of the backgrounds can be done well with her (discounting DAI). Wynne. I do like how Leliana seems to see through Wynne’s old lady act a little, and point out that she herself is older than she looks. I think this could be fun. And I brought up Anders up there ^ as a potential crackship >:)

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I don’t think I have one? Or, rather, I’m open to all the things I discussed in the shipping section being explored nonromantically.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I think there’s a lot of potential for her and Josie and Cassandra to be the villains in a DAI playthrough tbh. They are the ones kind of controlling the narrative about what the Inquisition is, and using it to further an agenda I do not feel is particularly in the interests of the Inquisitor in many cases, let alone most of Thedas.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Leaning more into her villain potential in DAI should have been an option imo.

my OTP: Any permutation of Leli/Morri/Zev/Warden is okay by me, given the writing to back it up.

a headcanon fact: This is very fix-it of me. But Tug made it out of the Arl of Denerim’s Estate alive, but without working legs. Leliana thought it was more romantic to write about him dying and giving Sketch his axe. Ableism abounds. Sketch is not done being pissed off at her about it.

002 | Give me a character & I will tell you: STEN OF THE BERESAAD

How I feel about this character: Another dumb bitch traumatised war veteran <3 I like him. I think he is the source of the best character work and worldbuilding this series has done on the Qunari. And he’s fun and rewarding to watch open up. Discovering that this really hardened and murderous bastard, with this totally foreign social perspective, likes cookies and art - it feels lovely.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Warden! I don’t go here often enough, but I have seen some really cute fics about him bonding with Wardens of different kinds and showing them his nice and soft sides <3 I think him and Morrigan troll flirting with one another is also really funny and great, lol.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Zevran, maybe! I’m disappointed that follow-ups to the series never did anything with Zevran considering going to Par Vollen with him and checking out the Qun. And Dog <3  I feel like Sten is really that war vet guy who needs a service animal.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I’m not sure what counts as an unpopular opinion. I suppose I think it was terribly out of character for him to declare Alistair ‘basalit-an‘ in the comics. He clearly has absolutely no respect for the guy in Origins.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Egh, I think I’m pleased enough with what we get from him in canon, excluding the comics jank.

Sean /Not Me: The Series (2021)

Not Me, as a whole, breaks me in the best ways possible. And Sean - he’s just everything to me. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful character arcs you can give me is having a character find a few more reasons to live. Make them start cherishing their life as a thing that should be protected and you have me on the floor sobbing. And Sean is this to me - comfort and pain wrapped in one person.

Jim Jimenez /Our Flag Means Death (2022)

Do you know how hard it is to choose only one character from this damn show? I love them all so much, with my entire heart. But Jim is my special kid okay. It truly hits diffently, seeing them having their own arc in this silly little show, being just as silly with their crewmates, but also being badass and cool off the side and also having such a precious friends to lovers romance alongside everything. My beloved. 

Ayukawa Ryuuji “Yuka”/ Blue Period (2021)

This anime wrecked me, everything about Yuka wrecked me. Their story made me cry for two hours straight and unlocked something in my brain. I don’t know how to explain. 

Shen Yi /Under The Skin (2022)

With everything happening this year, I almost forgot I watched this show, but everytime I remember it, I’m so incredibly fond. It’s rare to watch a crime show that feels comforting, but this one does it! And I attribute a lot of it to this lovely protagonist, because he is so warm, sensitive and charismatic. I loved watching Shen Yi and going through all these cases from his point of view. He just feels like such a comforting presence and honestly, more protagonists should have this characteristic. Let them be gentle!! 

Guillermo de la Cruz/ What We Do in the Shadows (2019-?)

As someone on this hellsite put it - he’s the most character ever. Last week I finally caught up with the new season and I’m all here for Guillermo’s emancipation arc! Fuck it up son!!!! I’m cheering you on, keep doing your hot girl shit!

Vegas Theerapanyakul & Pete / Kinnporsche: La Forte (2022)

Yes I’m cheating again but what are you gonna do about it. I couldn’t choose between these two because I find them both equally as engaging and interesting. If you’ve been following me - you know. You know the insanity I feel for these two. Who would’ve thought comfort is stored in the toxic BDSM couple. Emotional support fucked up men. Truly on the top of the list for this year.

Striga /Castlevania (2017-2021)

Listen it doesn’t need much - give me a queer muscly lady with a huge sword and the coolest action sequence of the series and you have me sold. My actual favourite is Alucard, but I feel like we, as a society, should appreciate love and go crazy over Striga a bit more. Like, she’s right there!!

Lucifer Morningstar /The Sandman (2022)

I just think they’re neat. Once again a show full of wonderful, beautiful characters, but Lucifer simply lives in my mind rentfree. @ netflix I beg, please renew this show so we can get the sequel with Lucifer going apeshit. I’m on my knees. 

Wen Ning / The Untamed (2019)

Sooooooooo I’ve been rewatching this curse of a show for the past week while lying sick in bed with covid and. AND. After three years the pain truly does not get better. Once again, I did not know who to choose for this - every single character in this god forsaken show deserves their own spot. But I somehow ended up on my darling, my boy, my favourite Ghost General. His story arc fucks me up so badly every time and yet it is one of the most beautifully tragic things. He’s a red thread, pulled through the entire story, and it makes my heart bleed. (and yes @the-cloud-whisperer​, I’m gonna come back to you soon and finally scream with you properly)

👑 Louis de Pointe du Lac / Interview With the Vampire (2022-?)

2022 has not ended yet but I know this guy takes the crown. I’ve been a fan of the Vampire Chronicles since I was 15 and finally. FINALLY. I get what I fucking deserve. And FINALLY here is a Louis that I adore - one that is charismatic, one that feels raw and real, and one I can finally love and be invested in. This show truly made me fall in love with his character when before that, he always paled in my affection to Lestat. He always kinda bored me in the books and the movie adaptation. As my friend put it: we all want to be Lestat but actually we are all Louis. But here is he at last, my highest quality blorbo: Louis de Pointe du Lac, resident disaster man full of existential despair, wrath and love. This show is all I’ve been thinking about and I will not apologise.

i feel very yucky abt damien and huxley i would love to hear ur thoughts!!!

Okay so I'm gonna preface this by saying while we know the next audio is gonna have Damien and Huxley, and there isn’t going to be a listener, that’s all we know so far (thought someone did mention something about a patreon announcement which confirms that they’re romantic?? idk I’m too broke to afford the patreon rip), but this thing is gonna assume they are canon.

This one is gonna be kinda long and probably not as eloquent as it could be but here we go!

I personally don’t like Gavin - at least not in the romantic sense. In fact, it’s one of the (very very) few gripes I have with the d.a.m.n. story. In almost every other part of this universe you get to choose which character you wanna ‘canonically’ be involved with, but with this particular story we get saddled with Gavin as the canon romantic LI. I personally felt like I was gritting my teeth at points in the story because of the romantic involvement Gavin had with listener, but I still listened anyway because I like the story - and I’m glad I did listen because I love these characters! I just quite literally would have preferred any of the other d.a.m.n. boys over him, and Huxley and Damien just happen to be my favourites.

Another thing is, canonically, I don’t think any of the characters Erik has made have a romantic relationship that isn’t with the listener. Yeah sure, maybe some of the secondary characters are in relationships (like the dude in Marcus’ story who has a partner? And family? I can’t remember his name rip), but they don’t interact with the listener as much as the main characters do - and to have some of the most forefront ‘main characters’ be in a relationship is just really jarring to me? Sure, Lasko and Gavin had a fling, but they aren’t currently in a relationship. If Hux and Damien become a thing, there will now be a gender attached to the receiver of the romantic affection of these characters, when the whole point of Erik’s universe crafting is that there is no gender attached to person who is usually at the receiving end of any romantic affection i.e. the listener. (Edit: this doesn’t change their sexuality at all, which is great, but my point is in a universe where Erik makes it a point to be gender inclusive about people who are in relationships with the LIs, it seems kinda out of place. Not bad, but new).  I don’t know if this point made much sense so I apologise about that.

I can also definitely see how the whole friends to lovers thing can happen, especially after both of them going through something as traumatic as what happened in inversion together, but I feel like there have been no hints towards them getting together and it’s just going to be dumped on us for the sake of having a canon non-listener couple in the redacted universe. Granted, I haven’t had the time to listen to all of the audios after inversion because I’ve been so busy, so I might have just entirely missed the videos where this relationship has been hinted at (which if it has please let me know), but from my current knowledge and stand point this relationship has been ripped out of thin air. It makes me feel uncomfortable because up until this point I’ve seen all four of the the d.a.m.n. boys as brothers, so now that two of them are potentially gonna be dating each other feels gross and I don’t like it.

And finally, to carry on from this particular point, I don’t think I would be able to listen to the non-canon romance audios form Hux and Damien then. But this is just me being stubborn because I feel like they would be ‘cheating’, and I’m just very weird when it comes to things like that lol.

Don’t get me wrong, Huxley and Damien are amazing characters and I want them to be happy and safe, and while I’m not gonna go around attacking people who like the ship, it doesn’t mean I have to like it. I shall suffer in silence instead lmao

I’m at my parents’ place for a bit right now, so I watched the Taskmaster finale with my dad last night, which was quite fun but it did mean no post where I constantly pause it to write down my thoughts as a I watch. Instead, here is a post-episode list of thoughts (spoilers for the ending of Taskmaster season 13, obviously):

- After the post-team task discussion, they showed Judi asking if they can talk about her singing, and that was played as a joke, but seriously, why the hell was no one talking about Judi’s singing? That was almost a Nish Kumar level of someone being mainly shit for a whole season and then the very last pre-recorded task is a team task that makes us say “What the fuck, you had that in you all along?” I didn’t know Judi could sing like that! Why didn’t she pull that talent out in the showing off task? It was genuinely really good singing. I assume they did discuss that in the studio and just cut it for time, but I’m sorry that in what made the edit, her singing got overshadowed by Bridget’s dancing.

I mean, Bridget’s dancing was amazingly funny. The bit where they put her sarcastic walking over that music to show it was the same rhythm was very, very funny. I don’t think they should have cut that either. But make a cut somewhere else. Or just make an XL version like we all want.

- They’re going to release the aubergine task as an outtake, right? I think they have to.

- Loved Ardal’s jacket.

- Sophie!! I was so happy. I mean Chris has become one of my favourite contestants, and what I really loved was having Chris and Sophie together in a season because it was fun to watch them compete with each other, and I’d have been fine with either of them winning, but by the last few episodes I was supporting Sophie pretty hard. I was so pleased with that ending. There were a couple of tasks from across the season that she threw herself into so hard that it would be unfair for her to not win. That is the kind of contestant who will make Champion of Champions 3 awesome.

On that note, we are presently on track for an all-female CoC3, so that’s cool. And a couple of other demographic stats – Taskmaster has never had a queer winner or a person of colour win it before, and Sophie is both, so that’s cool. She follows a long line of straight white winners, a line that’s previously only had one sort of deviation because I’m not sure if you can count Noel Fielding as completely straight.

- Sophie said on the podcast that she got some quite explicit messages from queer women about ways that it made them feel to see her do that entire task with her tongue out. I would like to say 1) I’m genuinely sorry that famous people get creepy sexual messages from random members of the public, no one should do that, there are so many lines between thinking something sexual about famous (or non-famous) people and putting those thoughts in a message and then sending it to them, and those people should have stopped at any one of the lines that divide those two things, and 2) This blog is very far from a message to Sophie Duker, she will never see it, so I would just like to say I had a bit of a celebrity crush on Sophie Duker before this season and that has grown exponentially by the end. Like… like it’s grown a lot. And her running around for a fair bit of the season with her tongue out is not unrelated to this.

- The duck task was one of my favourites in a while and so classic. Loved the very Taskmaster-esque juxtaposition of different ways to approach it. The young athletic guy (Chris) just running full out for the whole time and shouting random words, taking the direct route 1 approach, doing it so well that he even beat the lateral thinkers just on pure drive, and it was great to watch. An older less athletic guy (Ardal) trying the same thing but it doesn’t go so well. Two other people (Bridget and Sophie) finding two different legitimate workarounds. One person (Judi) going feral and physically attacking Alex. A couple of people cheating, and then we get the fun edit with audio of them repeating the rules over video of them breaking those rules. It was good stuff.

- The ending with them all doing the Bridget dance in a circle was wonderful.

- Seriously, Judi in that team task did an amazingly good job of singing, and even Sophie did a good performance, and they were both cheated out of having that acknowledged by the need to discuss the Bridget dance in detail.

- I said after the first episode that I hope Ardal’s nitpicking and Judi’s bullshitting remain throughlines for the entire season. I think it’s safe to say they were, given Judi’s rant about ducks recognizing their mother, and Ardal picking on Bridget about DNA. It was very funny when Bridget shut him down, even though I’m pretty sure she didn’t quite get the word for DNA actually right. But she came close enough.

- Overall, I’d just like to give all three women on this season credit for some of the best outfits in Taskmaster history, during the tasks and in the studio. Strong across the board. Can’t quite say the same about the men, though Ardal did make up for much lost time with that jacket.

- Awesome season overall. To be honest, much better than I expected when the lineup was announced. Every one of the exceeded my expectations for how entertaining they were (even Sophie, and I loved her before Taskmaster so she was the only one for whom I went in with fairly high expectations). I have come out of this season really liking all five of these people.

- For the last couple of seasons, they announced the new lineup right after the finale. They don’t seem to have done that yet, so I assume they’re saving the season 14 announcement for after Champion of Champions 2 next week. I’m looking forward to both those things (CoC2, and the new lineup announcement).
