If I had a nickel for every time I had a favorite character who lived in a future capitalist driven society where superheroes are a thing of the past and more legend and myth than reality, take up the mantle of their city’s “patron saint” superhero sort of on accident but then just say ‘fuck it we ball’ and roll with it, dismantle corrupt corporations from the inside out while also working to help the ‘bad part of town’ fight off the gangs with themes of the original villains that the original superhero used to fight, have a little brother who eventually helps them in their superheroing business, learn that the guy who they thought was their father isn’t their father and instead it’s some rich guy in charge/owner of the corporation they’re trying to take down, are snarky ass little shits with a gallows sense of humor, and have a significant other named Dana, I’d have two nickels.

Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

the issue on the table: June 21st is the birthday of both Ouma Kokichi and Venti (as someone actually had to point out to me)

(SORRY GUYS IM INSANE ACTUALLY VENTI’S BIRTHDAY IS JUNE 16)

June 21st is also the first day of summer; the solstice. The longest day of the year.

For Venti, this means many things. Of course, Venti is the god of wind who terraformed his land to be a place of sunshine and calm days. He specifically sculpted it so that his people could live well off the land as long as they were living in his domain; this is why Mondstadt is the gentle land of wine. We also know (from Vind, the storm watcher nun who guards that one tower out on a cliff in the middle of nowhere) that Mondstadt does not experience horrible storms. Rains, sure, but not storms. This is Venti’s doing; as long as the Lord of the Winds demands it, he will not allow his people to suffer.

When he ascended to the position of Mond’s primary deity, he literally brought the people of Mond spring and summer from the endless winter from which they had fought so desperately hard to escape. Of course Venti’s birthday is the first day of summer.

Now for Kokichi. In the interest of taking entirely different meanings from this… Kokichi is a *child*. He talks a lot earlier on about the value of innocence and acting like a kid while you can, and what is summer associated with except the break that so many children desperately wait for?

Kokichi is also someone who endures, someone who plays the long game. For that, the longest day of summer is super fitting; he after all is the one best able to make it through.

I want more people to talk about how Collei and Wanderer not only parallel each other, but are also perfect literary foils.

They’ve gone through so much of the same shit. They’ve gone through most of the same hell, but they’re so different. And I don’t think many people realize how close Collei was to becoming Wanderer. The ONLY reason Collei isn’t exactly like him is because of Amber. Because she had someone to support her, someone who helped her heal.

And the opposite is also true! Wanderer could’ve become Collei! And the only reason that didn’t happen is because his Ambers betrayed him. He had people who supported him, who helped him heal, but none of them ever stuck around. And while sure, NOW he’s getting that support, he’s still extremely cynical and untrusting of Nahida. He doesn’t trust anyone to be genuine because nobody would in his shoes. But that’s also exactly how Collei was with Amber at first.

While of course I don’t think Scaramouche will ever be up-beat like Collei, I think we’ll slowly get to see his cynicism fizzle out. The same arc Collei went through during the manga.
