2. Do you find it easy to create NPCs? Why or why not?

i have so much experience creating characters between original fiction, video games, art, and ttrpgs that making characters is extremely easy for me

3. Do you build settings/encounters or NPCs first?

well with lost it was more setting/encounter just because it was supposed to be a short shot so the small, contained setting and murder mystery aspects were "more important" than the npcs. but once we realized it was gonna be long running, the npcs got a lot more fleshed out. brownbird was definitely a balance of character and mechanics when making her stuff

4. Do you usually have a strong sense of who an NPC, or do they tend to be kind of basic/there to serve a purpose?

my npcs go from "here is a basic vibe" to "oh god theyre calling the shots now" fairly quickly. like lizzie was NOT really a person in game 1 and then in game 2 she was like "im going to lash out and arrest hawk because im in love with divine" and i was like yes maam okay maam i guess this is part of the plot now?

6. How do you pick names for NPCs?

in lost theyre all named after country/folk/americana artists, songs, or bands!! it started as an easier way for me to name them (inspired by mr will orville) but then it became long running and the cast list started expanding and i was like oops!! but yeah its mostly Vibes

Kendra! I was wondering your opinion as you’re the tumblr philosopher on these matters and I enjoy and agree with you on your literary critiques. But Lately (past year or so) I’ve seen a lot of comments along the lines of “does this drama have a happy or sad ending” literally any video on Instagram that has a collage of dramas or movies you’ll find comments like this or ones like “this story isn’t going the way I want I’m going to stop watching” I honestly am so confused I swear this is a newer phenomenon where people decide what to watch based on if the ending is happy or if the story comes together the way they want.

Like, I understand —sometimes I am only in the mood for something sad or dark so I can cry, but, I never determine what I’ll watch based on the ending! are people asking about the ending so they can watch in peace knowing it’ll end how they want? They can’t handle the events or the narrative if the happy outcome isn’t there? Is this like a side effect of fan fiction and self-insertism? Or an over-reliance on escapism? I am so confused by this and I see it on such a large scale.i can’t help but be bothered by it when I’d normally just mind my business but I feel like it’s so derivative of the work and feels like it’s enabling people not to be affected by work if it hurts them or is tragic or complicated. oh let's DISCUSS!!!!!!!!!!! i've noticed this phenomenon too nd i mainly think its another fallout from fanfiction 😑 like when ppl say 'does it have a happy ending?' MOST of them are not asking if the story's themes take a turn that's upsetting or if there's heavy triggers (bc when ppl want to know abt triggers they straight up ask abt triggers) they're ACTUALLY asking 'does the story end how i want it?'

it's hard for me to put into words but nowadays ppl start getting into a piece of media not with the intent of enjoying what's there, but actively fighting against what something is to create fandom fodder. FOR EXAMPLE ppl who watched squid game or all of us are dead but get upset when........ppl die? its a fucking death game show and then zombie drama like what do you expect??????????? ppl are LITERALLY fighting against what the narratives are supposed to be.

and like you said there's nothing wrong with wanting to know if a piece of media is super heavy emotionally or super fluffy bc sometimes you want one or the other. nd there's also nothing wrong with wanting to know abt any specific triggers in a piece of media. that makes sense. it even makes sense for something's tone or message being offensive to you so you drop it.

BUT imo there's a difference btwn accepting that you and the narrative of what you're engaging in just aren't compatible and being upset that this piece of media isnt something you can control and make your own. like what even is a happy ending to these ppl? is it everyone living and getting what they want? well is the narrative about people facing consequences for their actions? is it in the horror genre where characters are EXPECTED to die? is the happy ending two characters ending up in a romantic relationship? ok but is the narrative about how the characters need to accept themselves before focusing on an intense romantic relationship??

my point......a lot of times when ppl ask 'does it have a happy/sad ending' theyre bypassing everything abt the possible themes and narratives involved bc a good/bad ending is entirely subjective on what actually goes on in the story. so you asking that BEFORE engaging with it is boiling it all down to your preconceived desires........the cookie cutter approach to media..........being totally detached from what's actually in front of you. that's why ppl are mad that a marvel movie isnt a gay romance movie. or being mad that people die in a show abt a fucking death game

ok so a schimillion years ago a videogame called anarchisma was released and completely redefined an entire genre and nothing was ever the same again

ok let me explain a little more

a genre of irken videogame is the "rebel sim." basically a game that has a very anti-empire slant to it, ranging from surface-level critiques to extremely controversial ideas in it. it doesnt have to be a simulation game (the genre of "rebel sim" predates the lifesim, an extremely immersive VR game with time-dilation properties so it feels like youre experiencing years of gameplay in real-time, but in reality its been an hour) but thats just what theyre called

to this day, many popular rebelsims (especially those released by established companies and not indie devs) play their stories extremely safe, diluting the genre from a true expression of anarchism to a sort-of vent about the little frustrations of irken life, without an actual rallying cry or call to action or really anything daring about them. back when anarchisma came out, this was mainly seen via the stories being very surface-level and safe, picking a couple scattered issues and not really exploring them other than going "hey.... did you know.... that x thing.... is bad?" (i.e. a short scientist being brushed aside despite their skillset and the fact that they meet the height requirements for their job, as opposed to stating that height requirements for prestigious jobs shouldnt exist at all.)

enter anarchisma. at first you play as a lil' dude named myx, a short engineer. he has a friend named thirteen-13 that follows him around, and myx as a protagonist goes thru the game in a very "safe" way, following the conventions of your period-typical rebelsim that acts smarter than it really is... except for one thing. he keeps referring to thirteen-13 as the "dhar bitae," an irken term meaning "all-seeing..." and the period-typical slang for the control brains

once myx's route is over and done with, you're able to play as thirteen-13. and thats where the real game starts.

thirteen-13, in the game world, is the equivalent to the control brains- he's a computer that ruled over the fictional world but was kept under strict lock and key by his technicians. every time he escaped or was deemed "too defective," a new "instance" of him was reloaded, hence the number at the end of his name. thirteen is his name, and 13 is the instance number. and oh yeah! due to a loophole where he's a computer and not an irken per se, he's actually the first canonically defective character in all irken media!

needless to say the game was pretty controversial when it came out but it also redefined the entire genre. thirteen-13's plot gave rise to the "rebel ruler" trope, a trope that is very common in rebelsims to this day but watered down beyond belief- in anarchisma it works because theres a REASON thirteeen-13 couldnt just fix everything with his vast power: the societal ills the game addresses were around long before any iteration of thirteen, and they're going to be around long after he's gone. it's a bleak game with themes of powerlessness, futility, and imprisonment in an abstract way- when your enemy is a system of ideals and not one lone person, how do you fight?

anarchisma was the first game red played as a smeet. deemed defective and cast away from everything he'd ever known, a rejected smeet only kept alive because his outpost couldn't afford to kill him, this game was red's lifeline. like i said, thirteen-13 was a revolutionary character in that he was defective and proud of it- and that was what kept red alive during all the horrible things that happened to him in his smeethood.

due to the nature of irken videogames, especially irken indie videogames, there are a lot of conspiracies surrounding it. irken videogames tend to be heavily influenced by their developer's real-life experiences, and while this is not always the case, there were some... speculations on the plot of the game and its enigmatic developer. nobody knows anything about this guy so its impossible to confirm or deny if this was pulled from real-life or if he just made all of it up, so a lot of people got obsessive with the game's messaging, and wether or not the developer was trying to tell the populace something with it.

red was one of those people.

the idea that the control brains themselves wouldn't, couldn't, didn't hate him for existing... he was young, and didn't know anything about the world. of course it appealed to him!

as he grows up, his relationship to the game itself and the theories surrounding it becomes distant. he tucks his old comms unit he got from his outpost away- the only thing old enough to play this game; it's too old to run on modern systems. he stops reading theories. he has a nightly audience with the control brains, and he never even so much as looks for evidence about the theory. is he just trying to protect himself? he insists he's not defective; does he know, deep down? does he know that the "treatments" never worked, and he's always going to be defective? is it too risky for him to attempt to find the answer? is he scared of the answer?

and if he is, which is he scared of more?

seriously some of you guys claim to be progressive but youve managed to dredge up the old “video games/ movies/ comics/ magazines/ books/ hoop and stick games are the reason our kids are violent” argument lol. i keep seeing ppl say every piece of art that depicts bad things is unequivocally bad and its so stupid. first of all, you should be able to understand that fictional characters are not real people and their actions don’t take place in the real world. on top of that, you should understand that just because someone made art depicting something bad doesn’t mean theyre bad, and just because someone enjoyed it doesnt mean theyre fucked up and evil and literally condoning blah blah blah. when you say this shit, you sound like a boomer 

at some point you should be mature enough to see a piece of art and engage with it beyond the level of “i’m going to write a callout post for pearl from steven universe”. and more than that, you should accept that art is subjective and other ppl are gonna experience it differently than you 

i’ve been a horror fan for a long time and i love seeing fictional violence. blood, gore, torture, lies, cheats, dirty deeds, sexual assault, extreme emotions, extreme trauma, unreality, and morally gray characters. when handled well, these things can be dramatic, shocking, and emotional and i love it. 

i understand that some ppl would rather avoid these things, and i think content warnings are a good thing. if my friend has an anxiety disorder and epilepsy i’m not gonna force them to marathon all my favorite horror movies with blinking lights. you should be able to pace yourself. but the flip side of that is: some people don’t need those warnings. some people actively seek that stuff out and enjoy it. and just because it’s not for you doesn’t mean it’s not ok for someone else to love it. there are tons of normal level headed ppl who enjoy things that are way more extreme than your average disney channel show, and enjoying those things doesn’t make them problematic or suspicious or whatever, they just have different tastes than you 

example. one of my favorite characters is guts from berserk, one the best manga series of all time. in berserk, guts attempts to sexually assault another character, kills hundreds of people including a child, and serves in a war under a proto-fascist warlord. does the fact that i enjoy berserk mean i condone murdering hundreds of people? no, i wouldnt hurt a dragonfly and im also a tiny baby. does liking berserk mean i cant criticize the parts that are genuinely bad?? also no, the series basically treats casca (our main female lead) as a lamp for half the plot, and the part where guts tries to assault her is framed as an edgy character moment, which is pretty misogynistic if u ask me. again, if any of that turns you off, you dont have to read it. but i did read it, and i got a lot out of it and learned a thing or two about how not to write about women. 

with any piece of art, you should bring your own morals into it, and engage with its ideas. art is not always good or evil, it’s a dialog between you and an author. you NEED to be able to appreciate these things without resorting to insane reactions and in-group/out-group shenanigans 

you know that kid you knew in 9th grade who you could ask “do you listen to [band]” and they would always say yes no matter what band it was, just because they were terrified of the idea that someone else might be different than them in some tiny way? thats some of yall except youve formed a hivemind around it and appropriated a bunch of liberal academic terms lol

I have this thing with movies where I generally don't enjoy watching them. They never have time to set up stuff in a way that's enjoyable for me. Like they only have 2.5-ish hours to start a plot, introduce characters, and just generally do everything that you do to tell a satisfying story. That's so short! It usually leaves me feeling like "I wish there was more of these characters but there just isnt and im sad about it"

I like TV shows cuz they have the opportunity to make filler episodes, downtime episodes, specific-character-focused episodes, and there's usually a lot more of the world and the characters than in a movie. Just cuz there's generally more time in the actual thing. They're a lot comfier.

The Star Wars and Star Trek movies are good examples of movies I do enjoy, cuz there's SO MUCH other SW/ST content that a movie doesn't feel rushed or limited. It's like, there's already decades of content for these franchises and that lets me enjoy their movies. If there was only one SW/ST piece of fiction in existence and it was a movie i would not be interested.

Life is Strange is a video game series that gave me the same feeling as most standalone movies. Even though it's a series! I enjoyed the first game a lot but it's the only one with Max in it. And she was my favorite character and I was really invested in her to the point that I just was not interested in future Life is Strange games that didn't have Max in them. And I'm occasionally like "Man I liked life is strange i wish more of them had Max in them so that I would play them"

It's like, you can't just show me a character that I love and then when I finish the content, go "ok and that's all you're ever gonna see of them" you can't do that to my gets-too-attached-to-fictional-characters autism brain you simply cannot. Because in addition to "oh man I'm not gonna see more of that character? D:" my autism brain is also feelin "i cant get overly-attached to this new character because what if this is the only content theyre in, too? D:"

The amount of people on this site that can’t (or refuse to) separate reality from fiction is alarming. Insisting that shipping anything “squicky” makes you do that thing in real life is one of the least intelligent and most harmful things I’ve ever heard. MORE harmful than whatever “problematic” ship/fanfiction they claim is damaging young minds.

These are the same people who would assert that “marijuana is a gateway drug!” Or “any position other than missionary is filthy!”. I mean, if you think that, do you, but you can’t run around butting your head in other people’s lives trying to control how they live.

A lot of these people seem to be under the age of 25, which is also interesting to me. Some of y’all haven’t even grown up enough to have any life experience at all, but you all already have enough self-righteousness and hate in your little hearts to go around condemning (and in some cases, harassing) real-live people who aren’t harming anyone, simply because you don’t like the FICTIONAL things they’re into? Get out of here with that.

Half of those people would never even have the courage to butt in if they witnessed real abuse occurring right in front of them.

This is the type of culture that insists video games make people violent, that women shouldn’t enjoy sex as much as men, that any kind of kink is disgusting and dysfunctional. This is the type of culture that eventually leads to book-banning and book-burning.

Are REAL-LIFE cases of pedophilia, rape, abuse, incest, murder, and the like repulsive and need to be stopped? ABSOLUTELY. I can’t think of any person I’ve ever encountered in fandom who has written something “problematic” who wouldn’t agree.

But let’s be clear: FANFICTION IS NOT REAL LIFE. Reading about someone committing murder doesn’t make me want to go out and murder. Playing an RPG game doesn’t make me want to go out and shoot a bunch of people. And writing about a sexual relationship involving two people with an age gap doesn’t make me want to go out and condone/watch/engage in illegal sexual relationships.

A lot of you need to have a really good think about why your blood pressure gets so high when you see someone you don’t know from Adam, minding their own business, enjoying something that has nothing to do with you.

It’s really not about “representing the fandom” or “protecting young, impressionable minds”. As an abuse survivor, I knew people, had friends even, who did absolutely nothing to help me when I was going through what I was going through. Some of those same people were also the loudest when it came to what we now call “purity culture”. Where were they?

My point in saying that, is that writing can be a powerful thing. It can change your life for better or for worse. But I guarantee writing or reading about illegal activities in fandom isn’t pushing anyone over the edge into thinking XYZ is “ok, therefore I will engage in it in real life”. Anyone who does assert that has no critical thinking skills, and those are the people I’m actually concerned about.

Why do I read and write fanfiction? BECAUSE I WANT TO. That’s it. It’s not feeding some dark need or giving me the courage to work up to commit some heinous crime. I see two (or three or four) attractive people that I think would have an interesting dynamic, and I want to see them kiss, so I read/write it. That simple. I’m not crusading. I do enough advocating for people in REAL LIFE. The way I treat ACTUAL PEOPLE speaks more volumes about who I am and what I believe than the fiction I consume and create. Some of the best people I’ve ever met are in my favorite fandom.

I don’t give a shit what you ship. If you ship it, great. Enjoy it. I grew up in a household where we couldn’t really talk about anything; there was a lot of repression and denial. I choose not to live my own life that way. It’s healthy to experiment and explore your desires in a way that doesn’t cause any ACTUAL harm to REAL PEOPLE. What better way to explore than through writing?

So if you’re running around calling people “sick,” “disgusting,” “horrible,” “pedophiles,” sending threats, telling people they’re going to go to jail simply for writing about FICTIONAL CHARACTERS, I will say this: BLOCK ME. You are the people that are toxic to fandom. Fandom is supposed to be a safe space. It’s not a place for you to crusade for fictional characters and earn useless brownie points that don’t count for shit in the real world.
