Ultimate Gigolas

Long time no see, ey? Well, I'm back... at least for now, but I'm very excited to deliver this rec list! You all know that I'm a sucker for Barduil and Thilbo, but gigolas just hits different ya know? I tried to assemble a list of fandom classics as well as some lesser known ones that you really need to check out.

I Walked with You (Once Upon a Dream) by The_Dwelf

Kori is just a regular Dwarf, except, he isn't. He is Gimli's reicarnation, he has been dreaming of his past life since he was a child, and now that he's old enough to leave Erebor, he's certain of his condition. With unexpected help from a very shocked Elvenking, he will find a way to rejoin Legolas, at any costs. Angst, fluff, porn and (spoiler?) a happy ending. 

Notes: I would call this fic a lesser known classic. I've read it more than once (I've read most of these more than once) and it never fails to entertain. Maybe it's not my absolute favorite, but it's definitely a must read.

On the Origin of Half-Elves by Lumeleo

Legolas has found his mate, but that doesn't always guarantee happiness. Especially not when his dwarf still holds a grudge over old insults.

Of course, even when they start to get along, things aren't necessarily easy when rumours from the Misty Mountains make Legolas ride out to look for his lost brother... and ends up with a party of dwarves following him, because you can't ever have just one dwarf.

Now if only he can get through the adventure without any angry relatives taking an axe to his vulnerable parts.

Notes: This story is sweet. I really like Legolas and Gimli's relationship, but if I'm being honest I typically read it for the other (if you've read it you know the one I mean) relationship. Love this fic a lot (as well as the series that it folds into).

We Who Are Forever by WerewolvesAreReal

There is an elf who has lived in Aglarond for nigh on five hundred years before Grilka's birth. He stays always near the inner caverns and the halls of dead dwarf-lords, and the younger dwarrows know him for his songs and sad stories, his queer habit of walking the caverns in twilit sleep and speaking to the ferns that grow by the inner ponds.

Grilka likes talking to the elf, despite his grief. Somehow it feels like talking to an old friend.

Notes: This one is similar to the first one, but I like how the ending feels different and unique. These sorts of fics always leave me in so much pain, but only the good kind of course.

The Pirates of Erebor by mckittericks

The pirates of Erebor have long troubled the isle of Greenwood, but when they kidnap an elven lady for ransom, they don't get exactly what, or rather who, they bargained for.

Notes: I'm an intense sucker for a good pirate fic. While the style of this fic means that I'm not constantly rereading it, it's lovely to pick up again and relearn about this different world and its twists and turns.

A Nest for Birds to Sit and Sing by plinys

Within hours of arriving that camp, a hierarchy had sorted itself out among the troops, one that put Gimli’s troop near the bottom of the list and Troop 5126 at the top, though that was mostly because they had high-tech GPS’s and went to some fancy prep school that celebrities sent their kids too.

Notes: This one isn't romantic at all, but the innocence of their relationship is adorable, and makes you wonder what came after for them both.

A (sappy) Love Story by Racheluntilthe_veryend

They had been married for over forty years and together for longer, and at 68 Gimli still stared at his husband sometimes with puzzlement and amazement. This man loved him.

(Cutesy old!Gigolas because who doesn't need this in their lives?? Modern!Au)

Notes: It wasn't on purpose that these two were back to back, but they are almost the exact opposite from each other, and it's more than a little ironic. Still, I adore this fic and all it has to offer, I hope you read it cause it's lovely.

Notes: This may be one of my favorites (I adore fics where Gimli gets to have a relationship with Kili and Fili). It's just too cute and I will love it forever and always.

Rearrange by smilebackwards

Prince Fili’s betrothal to the elf prince of Mirkwood causes Gimli many problems, not least of which, he’s beginning to strongly suspect that Legolas may be his One.

Notes: This one and the next one might have to be my favorites, although I'm struggling to decide between them. Either way this fic is amazing and I have nothing but good things to say.

Hearts Will As Hearts Must by determamfidd

The Dwarves are returning to Erebor reclaimed, and the elves uphold their promise to safeguard the caravans as they pass through Mirkwood.

One particular Dwarf has wit and spark enough to match Legolas Greenleaf - perhaps even outmatch him.

It's hate at first sight.

Notes: This fic is just... I can't with it, it's lovely and I adore it so very much, like you have no idea how much I love it. If you haven't read it (what are you doing???) drop everything you're doing and read it. I swear you won't regret it.

Summary: There's a certain point where you can no longer ask someone what their name is. Thorin isn't sure exactly when that point is, but he knows that it's probably some time before the person in question saves your life. On the far side of the Misty Mountains, Thorin realizes that he never quite caught the first part of Mr. Baggins' name, and he finds that it's astonishingly harder to learn than he would have thought. Fili, Kili, and Dwalin are no help whatsoever.

**I literally didn't laugh this hard in a long while. Definitely worth a read! (And another, let's be honest).

Summary: Dis often chided her older brother for being a misanthropist. She did it so often it had become a term of endearment. It was true that Thorin struggled with people; he struggled to form and maintain relationships. Dr. Grey had diagnosed him with this and Thorin hadn’t the heart to tell him this wasn’t a symptom of his PTSD, it was a symptom of his personality. He exercised a sense of apathy with almost everyone he met… But Bilbo was different. Thorin actually found himself wanting to know more about him.

** This is honestly a favorite of mine. I can't begin to describe how amazing this fic is. If you have the time, go for it! I promise it will change you for good.

I need Thilbo fic recs that recognize the cultural differences between hobbits and dwarves. Because dwarves are loud and affectionate species. They slap each other on the back, they hug, the weird headbutt thing Dwalin and Balin do, they make jokes about their friends. They show their affections loudly. They aren’t afraid to show off their love for someone. Dwarves are a proud race and they show that quite often. But hobbits are a more quiet kind of love. Hand holding, forehead kisses, hand kisses, laying your head in their shoulder, falling asleep while they read to you, bouquets of flowers, picnics in a secluded area with all your favorite foods, baking together, reading together, admiring the stars kind of love. Hobbits are much more reserved than Dwarves. They take pride in their hosting skills and gardens. And I NEED to see Bilbo and Thorïn bumbling around trying to follow each others courting traditions and failing miserably RIGHT NOW.

One evening, a few weeks into his stay in Erebor, Bilbo sat hunched over a heavy metal desk, perched high on a pair of cushions, his hairy feet dangling off the edge of the chair. He’d been hard at work for hours, drafting what would one day become the first chapter of their fated quest. 

Thorin approached him from behind and set his hand on Bilbo’s shoulder. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to his temple. “I’m going to sleep. Join me when you’re ready. Don’t hurry on my account. Your candlelight does not bother me.” 

“Mhmm, be there soon,” replied Bilbo, his brow furrowed in concentration as he mouthed the words of the sentence he was trying to get just right. “Ah, Thorin, Thorin…” he looked up suddenly and swiveled around.

Thorin had just finished ducking out of his embroidered tunic. The flickering light of the roaring hearth set into the wall and the dim glow of the sunstones huddled up against Bilbo’s plants tossed flattering shadows across the thick muscle of his back. It also highlighted the pure white scar tissue rimmed in silver where Azog’s blade had sliced him through. Elvish medicine had saved his life, but he would always bear the mark of his nemesis and feel the wound echoed in the movement of his body. 

Thorin looked over his shoulder and lifted a brow when Bilbo called his name. “Mhmm?”

Bilbo found himself staring. He still wasn’t used to seeing the dwarven king in a state of undress, especially in so casual and intimate a moment. A physique such as Thorin’s was unknown among hobbits, which went some of the way towards explaining why Bilbo had never found a lover among his own kind. There was much more there, of course, but the physical nature of his attraction had caught him off-guard more than once since he’d found the courage to acknowledge it. 

Thorin noticed Bilbo’s wandering gaze and turned around. He made a bit of a cheeky show of leaning up against the wall next to the hearth, as if aware that the firelight did much to flatter his body. 

Bilbo swallowed, twitched his nose and tap-tapped his pen against a spare bit of paper he used to blot the ink. “Do you…” he cleared his throat, “...do you think there’s someone who could teach me Khuzdul? I should like to add some dwarvish script to my book. I’ve also heard that Smaug left the archive virtually untouched and there are many wonderful and ancient tomes that are still in good condition. But I can’t read any of them. And that…” he rapped his pen again, “... is a speeeeecial kind of torture.”

Thorin was a stoic man, capable of very subtle expressions. But the delight at hearing Bilbo’s request was immediate and obvious. He smiled, his eyes lighting up as warm as hearthfire. He crossed the great chamber to Bilbo’s side and reached out to cup his cheek. “I will send for a scholar from the Iron Hills to be your tutor. You will have the advantage of learning under a master of languages.” 

“That’s really not necessary. I can muddle along with some references and a helper. I don’t want you to go to a lot of trouble,” Bilbo replied. He felt the tips of his ears burn red, and he was suddenly grateful for the mess of his hair and the low shimmer of light.

Behold! 'Tis I, the mysterious Bagginshield Cryptid, returned from the deep woods and here to visit you with another Bagginshield question. . . What is your favourite headcanon?

Best of all cryptids!

It’s tough to answer, seeing as there are so many. But my overall favorite headcannon is a good ole’ “no one dies/everyone lives” trope. Thorin and Bilbo eventually get married and have a lovely life together. THAT is my favorite!

Usually, I’m sad, but okay with character death. I have never gotten over Thorin Oakenshield’s death. I read The Hobbit when I turned seven, twenty years ago, and I still have not recovered. What is a better way to feel better than to pretend like it never happens?

One headcannon I like, is that Thorin was so tired after the battle of five armies that he faked his death and lived a simple life in the shire with Bilbo.

The possibilities are endless with Thorin living. All of my favorite head cannons can reside within this topic.

Jealousy: Thorin is now king and needs a consort, so Bilbo thinks he’s going to lose Thorin to some dwarrow dam. BAM. Love it.

Cultural misunderstandings: Bilbo doesn’t understand dwarf courting and accidentally becomes engaged to Thorin (or vise verse).

Mutual pining: Bilbo refuses to admit his feelings because he is but a simple hobbit, and how could Thorin ever care for him like that…while Thorin feels like he hurt Bilbo too much in the past to be worthy of his love!

The possibilities. Are. Limitless!

FTLODD's review: When I say this is hands down the best smut I've ever read, I freaking mean it. It all comes down to the tension that is brilliantly portrayed between nephew and uncle. Though technically incomplete, we are gifted with - as the author states - '13k of pure garbage' (one man's trash, so on and so forth). It works as a stand alone just fine. Guh, it just turns me to goo.

In Which Kili Makes A Good Choice by hasbean - 2 chapters - A fill for the glorious Hobbit Kink Meme; Thorin was Kili's first.

Content: Thorin/Kili, Thorin/Fili, coming of age, Thorin being a good uncle, Durincest

FTLODD's review: One of my favorite tropes, Thorin ceremonially beds his nephews in a coming-of-age ritual. This is tender as well as hot, and we get the bonus content of a flashback to Fili's coming-of-age in the second chapter as well.

You wouldn't think about sending them home... by Miralana - 1 chapter - There is an edge to Thorin's movements every time he lays his mouth or his hands on Kíli, and Kíli knows that his uncle would hate nothing more than to see him get hurt or killed.

FTLODD's review: THE TENSION. Pent up Thorin does it for me, what can I say. The smut is fantastic.

Private Night by twodwarves_oneeagle - 1 chapter -Written for the prompt: I want Kili in Thorin’s lap, riding him. Make it as filthy as possible, anon.

FTLODD's review: What I love most about this fic is the surprise little tender ending, smutty as it is.

If I Have Given Offense by pherede - 1 chapter - Kili commits a grave transgression, and by the ancient laws of the Dwarves he must be punished. Durincest, dubcon, bondage, humiliation, public sex.

FTLODD's review: I obviously ADORE sex-world-building, and this fic hits all the right notes in that regard. It's twisted from start to finish.

Beginnings and Odd Endings by Book_of_Kells - Chapter 5 - First Night AU - Dark Thorin and angry Sigrid.... Lots of sex.

Content: Dub-con/non-con/rape, primae noctis, Dark-Fuck-King Thorin

FTLODD's review: I FOUND IT I CAN'T BELIEVE I FOUND IT I FOUND THE PRIMAE NOCTIS FIC!!!! Written from Sigrid's point of view, her struggle with bowing to tradition but ultimately enjoying what Thorin does to her is JUST *chef's kiss*. And the potential paternity implication at the end is a delicious cherry on top. This is dark smut at it's finest.

A Moment More by pherede - 1 chapter - Finally in the safety of Beorn's home, omega Fili goes into heat. Fortunately Dwalin is there to take care of him.vExcept that Dwalin is an aggressive, experienced alpha who wants everything Fili has to give. And Fili has a lot to learn. If only his inexperience weren't exactly what Dwalin likes most...

FTLODD's review: Poor, poor Fili. Like watching a lion toy with a mouse. You may be noticing a theme with tension going on here... By the time you're done reading this, you will feel as exhausted as Fili, but in a very good way, just like Fili.

I Will Do The Honors by orphan_account - 1 chapter - You can make yourself at home away from the camp, if need be." The voice of Gandalf interrupts Bilbo's instinctive day dreams about his front possibly being pressed up against a tree and one of the more muscular, larger Dwarves in the company crowding against him from behind. Oh, that would just be lovely…

Content: Bagginshield, omegaverse dynamics, heats, Thorin is an asshole and it's sexy

FTLODD's review: One of my favorites, what can I say. Thorin is a prick, but Bilbo is fucking sassy, and it's all very hot. Enjoy.

Possession by bluehawthorn - 1 chapter - Bard arrives at Erebor and is met with a version of Thorin he is very much unused to. Fill for kink meme prompt: AU where only Dwarves have A/B/O dynamics. Established Thorin/Bard. Normally, Bard tops. But when alpha-Thorin goes to rut, he tops the hell out of very confused Bard. non-con, dub-con is fine. ++++ knotting!

FTLODD's review: Honestly this could go on a regular smut list because it's not so much noncon/dubcon as much as it's like.... surprise!con. Bard's totally into it. Nevertheless, it's hot as hell, and next to Thorin/Ori, this is my favorite rare pair.

Goldlust by twodwarves_oneeagle - 1 chapter - After defeating Smaug and taking back Erebor, Thorin claims what is his.

Content: Bagginshield, Rough sex

FTLODD's review: Without the fic explicitly stating it, I consider this to be a quintessential Dragon-sickness smut fic. It literally doesn't mention it anywhere, it just screams it in my opinion.

Playing Favorites by waldorph - 1 chapter - In which Thorin is pretty sure he's getting it, and Kili knows better.

Content: Thorin/Kili, Durincest, bratty Kili, pent up Thorin

FTLODD's review: This one just makes me blush throughout. Thorin fighting his base urges but ultimately giving in is a kink I have, okay?

(The whole series is so good and really got me into the ship)

Until You See The Light by Lapin

Fíli and Ori have broken no promises. Fíli did not try to force a marriage on one unwilling, and Ori did not run from Erebor like a thief in the night. And yet, the two of them are paying for the crimes of their family. Somehow or another, they must find a way to make a marriage work, in between the politics and the old hurts.

Smaug never came to Erebor's door, but then, there are greater monsters than dragons in this world.

(Anything by Lapin in any fandom you like is gold tbh, but this one in particular has such amazing world building in it. It's unfinished and I don't know how likely it is the author will return to it)
