The Birds Sing No More

Once, long ago, there was a wonderful meadow. It was surrounded by a copse of trees, and nestled in the tree were birds of all kinds.

Day and night, without stopping, the birds would sing.

People came to the meadow in droves. There were chatterers and merrymakers, dancers and singers, artists and muses. They came together in the meadow and spoke or sang or drew or danced with those of like mind. There were spats between people sometimes, as was expected, but the peace was never disturbed for too long. Nothing could quiet the singing of the birds, and as long as they sang, none could truly be unhappy there.

The people named the place 'The Meadow of Twittering Birds'.

One day it happened that the wicked lord of a dark realm came to the meadow. He had admired its beauty for a long while, and wished greatly to control it. With many powerful enchantments he finally established control over it, and the people, who did not like him, were unhappy. Their revelry, however, despite becoming a little muted, did not cease. The birds still sang.

But dark days came eventually to the meadow. The wicked lord raised a tower in the middle, and surrounded the place with a wall of great stone. He said that he would bar the way if the people did not pay. He said that they would be driven away too soon if they did not pay.

The birds' singing became quieter. The people in the meadow lessened. And at last when the wicked lord flew a flag of death from his tower, and said that the meadow would be his, and no longer of the birds, the birds stopped singing.

People left, and the wicked lord was confused. He asked them, 'Why are you leaving? Why aren't you coming back?'

And the people said, 'We are leaving, because the birds sing no more.'

I'm not a Twitter user (we speak as is right and we will not call it X). I have never been one. Its current destruction matters little to me personally, and I am mostly indifferent. But it makes good fodder for a story.

I go to a classical charter school, with an emphasis on critical thinking and asking questions. I had my latin teacher tell the whole class today that none of us should work for Elon Musk because we will be very bad at not calling him out on his bullshit and questioning things and will loose those jobs very quickly. He went on to talk about how authoritarians test loyalty through blatent lies. That was all didn’t say anything about morality but that it was just something to be aware of.

In addition to how stupid it is to pay ANY amount of money just for a blue checkmark, can we also talk about the fact that paying for a verified status means that ANYONE can be verified now? Right now, the verification system is (somewhat) fair and accurate - most platforms need an account to include a phone number, large following, links from credible-ish media sources to your account, etc. in order to be considered “verified.” But with this new plan, any schmo can pretend to be anybody if they can make the account fast enough and have the means/will to pay the subscription.  So imagine you’re a new content creator that finally hit it big enough to start getting trolls, and one of these trolls decides to create an account in your name, pay for verification, and then start posting trash online. Yeah your core fanbase might recognize the account as fake right away, but the people who don’t know you and see a blue checkmark posting  We’ve also gotten to a place where most people subconciously equate a username+checkmark with credibility, so that’s another level of disaster right there. I know this is going to end up as another internet thing to be careful with and people are going to adapt to ignore the checkmark or whatever, but why create such an unnecessary headache in the first place?

I can’t stop thinking about how Vlad is like the DP universe equivalent of some strange queer crossbreed between Elongated Muskrat and Jefferham Bezos AND he’s also Danny’s shitty uncle. Your roommate's creepy gross sad lonely uncle becomes kind of an inside joke between you and your friends. That's why, when your roommate announces that his uncle is coming to pick him up and drive him home for some important family event, you all gather near the parking lot to finally witness this myth of a man in real life. It's also why you nearly faint in shock when Vlad fucking Masters steps out of a car to greet your roommate who, without missing a beat, immediately calls him a bitch.

I don't care about their Rich People Problems - A Rant

So, I was doing my weekly audit and I realized why I didn't like 2023 BLs.

I love Perth but I can't stand Kanghan. His problem is his dad is too nice. HIS DAD IS TOO NICE. He has money, his dad doesn't expect things from him. Like seriously. That's his problem.

Also the Only Friends characters. Their problems are seriously HAVING money and time. Money can't buy happiness type story. *deep breaths*

And Tantai from Laws of Attraction. They want to paint him as abused, but we know for the most part his dad only ignored him. There wasn't that much physical harm. And he has all this money that he can do anything with. Hell his dad even offers to send him to the US. They have money. And still Tantai doesn't have a job. He only has to pick a place and his name will get him a decent job but no, he is doing god knows what.

And the shows point it out over and over again. Like make up your mind, you want me to like them or not?

I can't stand any of these characters especially when they are paired with a poor boy.

Sailom has to carry the emotional and rational burden of the relationship while Kang acts out. Kang won't suffer any consequences what so ever but Sailom will and yet...

And don't get me started on Tantai and Thee. He has an evil father. He knows what his father is capable off and yet, Thee is taking the brunt of the fall, the blame, the beating, everything.

Same with Sand. He keeps saving Ray at his own expense. Not just emotional but physical, financial and social. And Ray gets mad at him??? Like boy take a look in the mirror.

Even a little bit with Bai Zongyi and Zerui's relationship.

I can't... I just can't with these characters.

I'm like read the room. It's 2023. Rich people are enemy No. 1 all over the world. Especially rich assholes with no self awareness and you make them into the romantic leads. Like 10 years ago I could have suspended my disbelief. In 2023, I can't. I can believe the 'everyone is gay' universe. I can believe all BL shenanigans. I can even believe people would choose to kiss other people with vomit still on their lips. But I can't suspend my disbelief and say they aren't Elongated Muskrat baby edition.

It's simply because the writers didn't know how to come up with a life struggle for these characters and that's why you have 'having money is a problem' problem. Like grow up.

You want power dynamics? There are other ways.

You want poor little rich character? There are other ways.

BLs have done it before. BLs have had decently written poor little rich characters. But this isn't it.

I still remember what Mark's mom said last year in Love Mechanics: (To paraphrase) 'Money can buy happiness but it's not as expensive as we think.' That is such a powerful, honest, realistic and rational statement.

I’m not surprised by the most popular groups (though as a l/n fan it does feel discouraging sometimes asdfghjl). But do you know the most popular characters for each unit and maybe why they are the most popular 🧐

thanks to elongated muskrat I can’t check any of the old stats accounts so this is from memory.

I believe the most popular character in Leo/need is Saki. I think part of it is the gyaru/genki girl personality, like she’s very fun and that usually appeals to a lot of people. Also she’s very popular with people who are disabled/chronically ill for obvious reasons. And like all the Tenma sibs (Incl Toya) are pretty popular, and specifically Tsukasa so I think she gets a bit of a boost from that.

More More Jump I actually am not sure. All I know is they used to consistently show up at the bottom on title stats alongside MEIKO and Honami. I think Shizuku was usually highest (this is for JP). Tbh from observation I’d say she’s probably the most popular MMJ girl in EN fandom as well. I think her looks might play a part in it I can’t lie but her voice and character arc probably help as well.

I think the most popular from VBS is Toya but again stats showed that he, Akito and Kohane are all pretty popular on JP and consistently showed up pretty close to each other (An is the least popular from VBS by a noticeable margin rip An 6ever in our hearts). Again like I said all the Tenma sibs are popular but I think his voice (on top of the fact that I’m fairly certain that itoken is one of the bigger names among the cast) and his “appears cool but is actually very soft” character archetype make him quite popular.

Tsukasa is the most popular character in the game no question on both sides of the fandom. He’s got a lot of appeal so like it’s totally understandable: his arc in the main story is a pretty solid “starts out as a jerk ends up being a nice person” kinda arc, he’s also the onii-chan character and the comic relief character. Seriously I think a large part of it is just because the game is very aware of the fact that he’s their weirdguy and treat him as such (it’s why i post so many facts about him because there’s so much stupid trivia dropped about him compared to everyone else; he runs on rule of funny 50% of the time).

N25 I think is the main one with clear different favourites between EN and JP. Mizuki is the most popular one on EN. Definitely connected to their trans swag bc a lot of fans connect to that (prsk has a largely queer fanbase on EN side). Also they’re pretty energetic and fun but also depressed and have a compelling backstory that again a lot of people can relate to. They’re very popular on JP as well just not the most popular.

For JP the most popular Niigo girl is Kanade. She’s like up there with Tsukasa on JP for most popular character. I think the appeal comes from her kindness and determination to save people despite her own trauma and she’s quite cute in an unconventional way (hikikomori) as well. I think there’s some boost from tomoriru as well being another bigger name for the cast. She voices for Revstar and voiced for Love Live Nijigasaki when the game launched, as well as some anime, and has a good following so that might be a contributing factor in her popularity.
