When you compare what happens when Thirteen returns after 10 months to her reunion with Yaz in the Vanquishers, look at the difference in the devastation on the Doctor’s face to learn it’s been a few years. The first time she’s just been shoved, and she’s so surprised and you can see that shock when Ryan says “ten months” was over her like cold water. And Yaz is upset, perhaps against even her own expectations of how she’d be in that situation. But oh my gosh, watch The Vanquishers. Thirteen responds with so much more agony. The devastation is so much more intense - here, with Yaz looking at her with the biggest heart eyes filled with tears. And I think that juxtaposition is so incredibly acted in the microexpressions of the actors because what you can see is the weight of that unintentional abandonment weighing so much more heavily on the Doctor, to know it happened again. And you can see by contrast the sheer abandon of Yaz’s devotion to the Doctor made so much more clear, and palpably how much more she loves her now in spite of what’s occurred. The parallels in this story and the way these characters have grown is going to kill me.
Honestly, there are a lot of bad takes on Thirteen flying around right now.
[post marked for spoilers, just in case]
People calling her misogynistic slurs, saying they hate her in a way they haven't said about any of the male characters... yeah, that's misogynistic.
But popping off about how if you don't absolutely love Thirteen you must be misogynistic is also, yep, misogynistic.
A character being a woman doesn't mean everyone has to be a 100% stan or they're a bigot.
And the people who don't like her for reasons including story, characterisation, writing etc, are in no way responsible or representative of those hating on her for misogynistic reasons.
Nuance is a thing folks!
You are allowed to have characters that you like, dislike, kinda like, kinda dislike, and feel "meh" about.
Thirteen is not a real person. There is valid criticism to be made of the writing that has gone into both her characterisation and the manner in which she has been introduced in the overall game story.
Equally, there is criticism to be had of people reacting to her for reasons unrelated to her as a character, ie to her mere existence within the game.
Comparisons to the demon brothers in season one, some of whom began as antagonistic, are pretty meaningless when it comes to the introduction of any other character.
The seven demons that reside in the House of Lamentation are introduced as the romanceable main characters of the game. The player knows in advance that each will become enamoured with MC, and that their attention will be focused on MC and the player.
Side characters do not have this role, nor do they promise it. Simeon, Solomon, Barbatos and Diavolo were not originally dateable, and their characterisation showed that.
Since they have been made dateable, their characterisation has expanded - although sadly not equally.
But even those characters were there from the very first season. The player always knew them.
New characters take longer to adjust to.
At first I found it unfortunate that the game has chosen to introduce a character which they would have known would be controversial (see the mass review dragging in Japan since Thirteen was announced) with a very antagonistic personality.
It has given fuel to those misogynists who were already prepared to hate on the character.
However, there is credit to be given to Solmare for looking past that and doing what they want with the character, regardless of bigoted reactions, and I think that should be applauded - and hateful fans ignored ^-^
You do not have to love or hate Thirteen. You can like, dislike, or have no opinion on her too.
Not every opinion on every character is a moral crusade!
PS, boosting hateful tweets and posts by bigots is a great way to give attention to a minority that are better blocked and ignored ^^
We all know how misogynistic the world is. Doesn't mean we need to spend our time attacking others, hating on them, or sharing the hate for more to see!
(I have a different complaint about season 4 thus far - I'll try to write that up this weekend 👀)
Might as well draw the newbies~
