Anderson Lee Aldrich: What we know about suspect in the Colorado Springs shooting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What we know about Anderson Lee Aldrich, the alleged Colorado Springs Club Q shooter Anderson Lee Aldrich: What we know about suspect in the Colorado Springs shooting A suspect has been detained following the mass shooting on November 19 in Colorado Springs, which left five people dead and 18 more hurt. At 11.57 p.m., police officers arrived on the site after 911 dispatchers got "several" calls reporting an active shooter inside the club. Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, was identified as the shooter by Colorado Springs Police early on Sunday. He was admitted to the hospital with unknown wounds. Club Q described the assault as a hate crime and claimed it was "devastated" by it. An event featuring drag queens that started at 9 p.m. and was scheduled to end at 2 a.m. was where the shooting occurred.
Who is the Colorado Springs shooting suspect Anderson Lee Aldrich?
On Sunday morning, Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, was identified as the alleged shooter. The culprit was apprehended on the spot and taken to the hospital with unidentified injuries. Aldrich entered the club and started firing a long rifle, according to Colorado Springs Police Deputy Chief Adrian Vasquez, before being tackled by onlookers. At the scene, two firearms were found. There hasn't yet been a motive identified.
How did the shooting unfold?
The shooting happened following "Delusions," a punk and alternative drag performance staged by actor Del Lusional, at Club Q. The event started at 9 o'clock, then a DJ spun tunes from 11 o'clock till 2 a.m. Just before midnight, there was a report of gunfire, and police flocked to the area. "I heard the gunshots while I was backstage. In a tweet, Del Lusional stated, "I only saw the after math and even then, I didn't want to look. The singer wrote: "I never dreamed this would happen to me and my bar," in another post. What should I do with myself? The gunfire is unavoidable in my ears. According to a witness who talked with Colorado Public Radio, one victim fled the scene for a neighbouring 7-Eleven where they both passed out. One of the victims had been shot seven times when he ran over here in an effort to seek assistance. "He fell down. That warning tape is there at the front for a reason. People within the facility allegedly assisted in stopping the shooter, according to a Facebook post on the club. A statement on the club's Facebook page reads, "Our and thoughts are with all the victims and their families and friends." We appreciate the brave patrons' swift efforts in tackling the shooter and putting an end to this hate crime. 11 ambulances and more than 30 firefighters arrived on the site, and ambulances transferred three victims at a time to nearby hospitals. Also read: How did Jean Marie Straub die? Cause of death – revealed. Police spokesperson Lt Pam Castro refused to speculate on a motive during an early morning press briefing, stating that "the inquiry is in the very early stages." The number of fatalities and injuries, Lt. Castro continued, "may alter as the inquiry progresses." The Colorado Springs Police Department's inquiry is being helped by the FBI as well. The killing occurred only days before Sunday's International Transgender Day of Remembrance, when activities are held all over the world to mourn and remember transgender people who have died as a result of violence. The shooting in Colorado Springs was certain to have a unique impact on Sunday's activities. According to its website, the gay and lesbian nightclub Club Q presents a Drag Diva Drag Show every Saturday. On top of the drag show, Club Q advertised a Sunday "all ages brunch" and a "punk and alternative event" that would be followed by a birthday dance party. The shooting brought back memories of the 49-person tragedy that occurred in 2016 at the Pulse LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Read the full article

THE BEST SOURCE OF ALL, WIKI DA PEDIA.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Batman_(film))
« Batman is around 30 years old »
« with Reeves stating Batman is "emotionally stunted at being 10 years old, because that's a trauma you don't get past". »

SCREENRANT ARTICLE. (https://screenrant.com/the-batman-how-old-is-robert-pattinsons-bruce-wayne/)
While Matt Reeves' new DC reboot doesn't confirm Wayne's age in specific terms, it is possible to work out how old he is, and Reeves himself has offered some insight.
Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne was written to be around 30 years old.
THEORY
To use the specific details of Batman's origin, the Waynes were murdered after seeing The Mark Of Zorro, and The Batman version could still mirror that by having the movie they see be 1998's The Mask Of Zorro making Bruce Wayne around 33, having originally been 8 when his parents were killed.
Tumblr media
LOOPER ARTICLE.  (https://www.looper.com/787614/how-old-is-bruce-wayne-in-the-batman/)
According to information provided by director Matt Reeves during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bruce Wayne was written to be about 30 years old in "The Batman."
Tumblr media
REDDIT 1 (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheBatmanFilm/comments/mzmar8/theory_bruce_wayne_is_26_years_old/)
Bruce wayne is 25 years old.
Tumblr media
REDDIT 2  (https://www.reddit.com/r/DC_Cinematic/comments/t955b0/the_batman_year_age_confirmation/)
Selina was 7 years old when her mother died.
Maria Kyle (1976-2004)
Selina is 22 years old.
The movie takes place on Thursday, October 31 (2019)
Vengeance have no age. (ok this one is not relevant, but I found it funny)
REDDITER OPINION
If this is set in 2022, that puts Selina’s birthyear around 1997. And if Bruce was 10 when his parents were killed in 2001 (which I believe has been confirmed?) that means he was born around 1991. This makes Bruce 31 and Selina 25. This is, of course, ignoring the fact that the last Thursday, October 31 (the day Bruce mentions in the opening narration) was in 2019, and the next is in 2024. If this is set in 2019, then Selina is 22, which can’t be right. So either this is set in 2022 (and fuck the calendar, I guess) or it’s set in 2024, which would be closer to a potential sequel release date anyway.
The letter he finds in Selina’s house also says 2019
The movie takes place in 2021. The Thomas Wayne mayoral ad has (on the top left) 2001 as the release date. This coupled with the fact that the news said it was 20 years ago that the Wayne’s were murdered gave me 2021 (year the movie started shooting)
Tumblr media
MY OPINION.
I believe the movie is set in 2019, only because Thursday October 31 is mentioned. I used to think the movie was set in 2021, it made sense to me with the Wayne's death in 2001 ( it's been 20 years).
Bruce was born in 1991, he is 28 years old. Edward was born in 1991, he is 28 years old. Selina was born in 1997, she is 22 years old.
I am convinced that Bruce and Edward share the same age. Both characters mirror each other, it makes sense to me that they were born in the same year.
On the other hand, I'm upset to know that Selina is a 22, it seems strange to me compared to Bruce and Edward. I would imagine her to be around 24, at least.
If you have any theories or just want to share your opinion, you can drop a message :D
EDIT !!!
Please read the replies to this post! A little angel dropped a very convincing analysis regarding the year of the movie! This lovely person succeeded in convincing me that the movie is indeed set in 2021!

Court Hallway
After the trial ended, I did not leave immediately. Rather, I waited in the hallway for Hang Jiahe.
Soon, she walked over, guarded by two bailiffs.
MC: Miss Hang.
Tumblr media
Hang Jiahe: What are you doing here? Are you going to laugh at me?
Hang Jiahe: Are you happy to have beat me?
MC: You’ve misunderstood. I came to tell you something.
Hang Jiahe: What?
MC: Actually… this examination report…
I took out that last examination report again.
MC: Due to time and technical limits, we currently do not have the identification results.
MC: When I showed it in court, I just wanted to add psychological pressure onto you.
Hang Jiahe: …
Hang Jiahe froze for a few seconds, but she then responded quickly.
Hang Jiahe: You tricked me… you tricked me… hahahahahahaha!
She suddenly burst into sharp laughter.
Hang Jiahe: I didn’t lose… I didn’t lose…
Hang Jiahe: I still got my revenge!
MC: …
MC: Miss Hang, can I ask you something?
Tumblr media
Hang Jiahe: What do you want to say?
MC: You said in court that Qi Yu tried to hold Hang Fei back “that night”.
MC: But you still murdered her out of hate for her bystander position, correct?
Hang Jiahe: Yes, I hated her for being a coward, hated her for being too scared to resist Hang Fei, hated her for looking on for so many years without lifting a finger!
Hang Jiahe: She knew during those years what Hang Fei was doing to me, so why didn’t she save me?
MC: …
Hang Jiahe: Then… did you know that Hang Fei had also been abusing Qi Yu during those years?
Hang Jiahe: I did. How could she not have been beaten, with how cowardly she was?
MC: Then do you know why she was beaten?
Hang Jiahe: Why?
MC: …
I took out my phone and opened a video featuring Qi Yu’s abuse. That small woman was lying weakly on the floor, passively enduring the man’s punches and kicks. But she kept mumbling something –
“Don’t hurt Jiahe… and those children… stop it…”
Tumblr media
Hang Jiahe: What…
MC: Miss Hang, did Qi Yu never do anything during all those times you were abused?
MC: Are you sure that every time, she chose to be a bystander, rather than being forced into her position?
MC: Did you know that Qi Yu said those words in each of the videos she was beaten in?
Hang Jiahe: I…
Hang Jiahe froze for a second, but then she immediately reacted.
Hang Jiahe: So what, then? What do you want to say?
Hang Jiahe: That I misunderstood her? That I shouldn’t have killed her? Then does all the pain I suffered for so many years even matter?
Hang Jiahe: You want me to absolve her? To forgive her?
MC: You’ve misunderstood. That’s not what I mean.
MC: I am not you. I have not endured your suffering, so I cannot request for you to forgive anyone.
MC: I haven’t seen what happened during those years, so I cannot judge whether Qi Yu was actively or passively making her decisions.
MC: And I definitely can’t carelessly determine whether she sinned or not.
I stopped for a moment and looked at Hang Jiahe’s gloves.
In her mind, she probably was the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantès – someone who had been wronged and could only get revenge for herself. She believed herself as intelligent and as lucky as Edmond, that she would ultimately be the winner. But…
MC: But even Edmond would figure out the situation before his revenge and repay his benefactors.
MC: I’m telling you this, only because I hope you’ll understand what sorts of people you sent away.
MC: I hope you understand that there have been people who intended to treat you kindly.
Hang Jiahe: …
MC: Also, Miss Hang, I can guess why you were not willing to ask for help from the police.
MC: In that sort of situation, you may have thought that you couldn’t rely on the outside world to go against them.
MC: But even so, me, Captain Morgan, and many, many people still have to do something.
I flipped further into the examination report.
MC: Even if Hang Fei is gone, the things he’s done will not disappear with him.
MC: This is the report we’ve created. Captain Morgan’s already sent it to upper management and applied for international cooperation.
MC: Miss Hang, we will bring you the justice you deserve for the pain you’ve experienced.
MC: As for the last few people, I promise that they will receive the punishment they deserve.
MC: So, for the rest of your life, please don’t live in hate.
MC: You’ve already stayed in the darkness for long enough. Please try to take a step forward.
MC: Doesn’t it say that in your beloved “The Count of Monte Cristo”?
MC: “He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness.”
MC: Miss Hang, if possible, please try it.
MC: Perhaps the light you’ve always been searching for isn’t too far away.
Hang Jiahe: …
Hang Jiahe: Ha… ha… hahahahaha!
Hang Jiahe broke into sudden, sharp laughter. It sounded like a heartrending sob was woven in it, as it resounded in the empty hallway, melting into the rain.
Amid the grey deluge of rain, specks of light leaked through. Maybe the downpour would finally end this time.
Not long after, Simon’s homicide case opened trial, and Wang Chunchong was deemed the murderer. Xingrui Estates declared that they would be depriving Xu Yin of her position and removing her from the family. Only Tyson received the weakest blow, as the evidence for instigation of murder was insufficient. However, lots of people online were saying that they hoped he would “succumb to the demon of illness as soon as possible”.
Thus, the homicide case of the couple in Yaofu Community came to an end.

NXX Base
After the Hang Jiahe case concluded, the NXX investigation team met up at the base again for discussion.
MC: That’s how the Hang Jiahe case went.
Tumblr media
Marius: Thanks for your hard work!
Artem: Thanks for your hard work. You did excellently.
Luke and Vyn nodded at me.
MC: Thanks, everyone.
MC: Enough about me – how’s everyone else’s investigation?
Artem: I’ve already updated Tyson’s case file. I haven’t found any new clues for now.
Marius: I followed what Wang Chunchong said and investigated that guy named Xiao Ren, but…
Marius: I haven’t found anything for now.
Luke: You also found out about Xiao Ren?
Marius: Huh?
Vyn: What a coincidence. I, too, found out about him.
MC: !!!
Luke: Marius, what information do you have on Xiao Ren right now?
Marius: Mainly what Wang Chunchong told me before.
Marius sighed.
Marius: According to Wang Chunchong, Xiao Ren is linked to Heirson’s raw materials purchases.
Marius: Tyson held Xiao Ren to very high regard, and keeps his occupational information on severe confidential status.
Marius: All in all, this person seems pretty mysterious.
Marius: What about you, Luke? What did you find?
Tumblr media
Luke: The aunties in the group told me that Zhao Fei kept looking for someone called “Xiao Ren”.
Luke: I suspect that Tyson brought up this person in the recording that he sent him.
Marius: That’s possible. Wang Chunchong also heard Tyson bring up Xiao Ren, so there should be some sort of link between them.
Artem: Luke, that’s not all the information that the assistive team provided you, is it?
Luke: Yep, that’s not all.
Luke: First, the workers in Heirson where the abnormalities appeared were mostly on the production front lines, so what they touch the most are the products.
Vyn: They probably mixed in their developed illegal drugs into the products, resulting in infection.
Luke: That’s right.
Luke: Secondly, about Zhao Fei…
Luke ripped out a page from his notebook and placed it on the table.
Artem: These names are…
Luke: When I was questioning these ten people about Zhao Fei, their reactions were a bit abnormal. I suspect that…
Luke: They’re the ones hiding Zhao Fei.
MC: What about you, then, Dr. Richter? You just said that you also found out about Xiao Ren.
Vyn: I spoke with half of the 20 special respondents and noticed that it was the same doctor in charge of their examinations.
Vyn: And that person is named “Xiao Ren”.
Vyn: So I suspect that this person knows many secrets regarding Heirson’s experimental data.
MC: If so, this Xiao Ren person knows about where raw materials come from and can deal with the experimental data…
MC: If we can find him, we might be able to patch up the missing part in our evidence chain against Heirson.
Marius: So this Xiao Ren is going to be our investigative focal point from now on?
Luke: Leave it to me, then. I’m the best when it comes to finding people.
Artem: Then leave Zhao Fei to me. I just happen to have something I want to confirm with him.
Vyn: I have only met with the special patients. I will continue to meet with the remaining bunch.
Vyn: Marius, what are your plans?
Marius: Me? I plan to go see Hang Jiahe.
Marius: She wanted to find reporters in the past to drop major news about Heirson, and she’s now in jail…
Marius: We should find out what this news is.
MC: Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that!
Marius: So, jiejie, want to come with me to see Hang Jiahe? After all, only the two of us know her the best.
Tumblr media
MC: Uh…
I suddenly had a bad feeling.
Tumblr media
Luke: Marius, do you really need someone to accompany you just to go see someone?
Marius: I’m not going to see a typical person, am I? I’m going to see someone who might give us an important clue.
Marius: It makes sense to be a little more cautious and bring someone else.
Luke: Then just bring your assistant. If anything else, then bring some recording equipment.
Luke: Convenient, and it can record in real time.
MC: …
Right after, Artem spoke.
Tumblr media
Artem: Zhao Fei’s case was ours to begin with, and now that we have clues…
Artem: MC, let’s finish it off, alright?
MC: Lawyer Wing…
Tumblr media
Vyn: I may be overstepping, but…
Vyn stepped in just before Artem could speak again.
Vyn: May I trouble you to go with me next?
Vyn: There’s a special patient that I need your assistance with.
Faced with their “eager” eyes, I was very sure that –
The investigation team seriously needs to recruit a new member!

You have found LABORATORY NOTE 4! COMBINE with your CASSETTE DECK?
>yes no
Playing LABORATORY NOTE 4...
"Audio log 03 17 22 04. Dr. Francis B-- well, you already know who I am. Reporting from Plasma lab sector 2, on the Expansion Suit Mark Two progress. It is... 3:45 in the afternoon, rainy -- oh the weather doesn't matter. We're underground. Anyway!"
[ there's shuffling. sounds of a pen on paper, likely the doctor taking notes. someone is breathing heavily, small sobs of pain trying to be held back. the doctor clears her throat, marks the page one last time, and sets something (likely a clipboard) on a table. ]
"Hahh.... hahhh... please. jus' lemme.... it hurts--"
[ a sound of skin on skin contact, and a choked off cry as the speaker's sentence is interrupted. silence endues shortly after. ]
"Three, what did I say about lab equipment?"
[ there is no answer, only more heavy breathing, more panting. a small whimper, though no more words. ]
"Very good. Lab equiment doesn't speak. Lab equipment doesn't complain, and lab equipment cooperates when in use."
[ More shuffling, marking something down on paper with pen. ]
"Though, most lab equipment doesn't need heavy restraints and a nose feeding tube, but we make do, don't we Three? Yes we do! Soon you won't need any of that, won't that be nice?"
[ again, silence. "Three" is mostly quiet, only occasionaly breathing aloud in shuddering steps. ]
"Right. Good. Ongoing tests with the EXP-Mark Two have been exceptional! Test subject Three has responded beautifully."
[ movement, and a sharp cry of pain. ]
"For the purposes of my tests, I have installed one circuit board directly into the spinal cord via the neck, and so far have kept it clean and sanitized. No infection to date, though continuing to monitor. Anything can happen..."
[ scratching of the pen, more notes. clattering of something -- hard plastic, metal, can be heard. the doctor had likely placed something upon the table. ]
"Alright. Approximately 12% of the outer suit remains, and 30% of the wiring, control boards and computer remain. In total, 42%. I'm aiming to get that number down to 5%, or at best within the 2-3% for the purposes of undetectable control. That's down a total of 17% from last week, log 03 10 22 03, with lovely progress still. It's not a technical term, but a lot of the 'fluff' on the suit can be contributed to armor for both the computer parts and for the pilot."
[ the 'pilot' coughs, sobs. the doctor seems not to notice. ]
"Probably should've picked video for this test, but I digress. I'm here now, and it's awake. Note to self: opioids may solve the problem of stress-related unconsciousness, though with the added risk of impeding brain function. Worth looking into."
"Please--"
"As I say aloud the commands, it should be noted that this is not voice activated. Merely for the documentation. I am holding the controller with both hands, and moving the corresponding dials. Three, I want you to get up, spin in a circle and stand in front of me."
[ silence. small sounds of pain, whispered curses. giggling, and a clap. ]
"Wonderful! Even smoother movement than last time. The controls can be finicky, and to operate manually there would need to be four hands to manipulate the dials for the singular pilot, but this is great progress."
[ another noise. a pen, dropped. ]
"Now, pick up my pen please--"
[ a sharp scream from Three, and a sharp crack. ]
"Ah. I suppose you're not as flexible as Two. Well, let's hope you didn't break it too bad. Note to self: ease into the arm movements. Maybe there was a reason there was so much padding inside the original. Well, that's -- ah, damn it he's passed out. Note to self three: don't kill the pilot."
[ a sigh. ]
"Well okay. Thats it for today. End log."

Top 10 Scariest Horror Films You Didn't Know Were Based On A TRUE Story feat. Trailers + Where To Watch
There’s something about horror films that are based on real events that just make me weak.
So weak, in fact, I’ve decided to spend the last *checks watch* one and a half years of my early 20s delving into the facts and the fiction haunting the horror genre.
My parents must be so proud.
Most of these films wear the badge of ‘this is reality or close enough to it, anyway’ with dignity, leveraging gullible paranormalists like me to drive ticket sales. The Conjuring (2013) is just one of these films that is explicit in its basis in reality, going on to rake in 16 times its budget and inspiring me to delve deeper into my occultist journey.
(No, really, they’re so proud.)
But the ventures of Ed and Lorraine Warren are not the only experiences of horrifying and haunting events to be reinterpreted via the silver screen. There are some horror films you wouldn’t expect to have reality flushing through their veins.
Some of horror’s biggest hitters aren’t just living in your nightmares. They actually happened IRL.
Which is, ummm, fine, yeah, it’s not like I need to sleep anyway.
*Stay tuned to discover the horror films you didn’t know were based on true stories and the real accounts that inspired them.*

Jaws (1975)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1fu_sA7XhE
This cinematic classic follows the adventures of a great white shark as it terrorises the summer resort town of Amity. A couple of corpses later, and the local police chief, rookie marine biologist, and wild-card shark hunter track the beast down themselves.
Most horror films use a person or a story as a basis for a film. Jaws, however, is an amalgamation of experiences recorded by the writer of the novel inspiring the film, Peter Benchley.
Benchley admittedly had a life-long obsession with sharks and was inspired to write a book on a rogue great white after reading about a bloke called Frank Mundus.
"...in 1964, I read an item in a newspaper about a fisherman who harpooned a 4,500-pound great white shark off Long Island. I remember thinking at the time, Lord! What would happen if one of those monsters came into a resort community and wouldn't go away?”
Quint, the wild card shark hunter, was based directly on Mundus.
Another influence, although not referenced by Benchley, was the 1916 New Jersey shark attacks.
In high summer, five Americans were attacked by a great white off the coast of the Jersey Shore with 4 falling victim to their wounds. For the next 11 days, the same shark cruised along the 70 miles of the beach towns and small villages. The shark even performed the first shark attack reported in US history, countering the long-standing belief that sharks couldn’t bite through human bone.
(Spoiler alert: they can.)
When beach goers came to the beach early morning to discover the 3rd victim bitten in half, this was disproven. After that discovery - which bares a striking resemblance to the opening scenes of Jaws - the story hit The New York Times front page.
Just like the film the mayors tried to deny there was a deadly shark making the rounds to secure profit to their seaside resorts. And just like the film a swimmer was even mauled in an estuary.
It wasn’t long before they settled on the identity of the perpetrator and the locals set off with rifles and pitchforks.
(Not sure how useful they’d be against a shark, but okay.)
The shark met its end after it attacked one of the hunters’ boats, a scene we also witness in the film.
You can rent it for £2.50 on Amazon Prime.

Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWDM_p68HAQ
We follow a policeman who has a side gig as an exorcist as he encounters strange goings on in the Bronx. Ralph Sarchie chases up the paranormal activity and attempts to untangle why possessed people are painting ancient messages and images in various places.
Here’s the thing: none of this actually happened. As far as we know, anyway.
What this film is based on is the real Ralph Sarchie who wrote the memoir Beware The Night as an ode to his work as a demonologist. It’s based on his character, his tone of voice, and how he carried out his work.
Sarchie presents his work as his destiny, as some form of divine intervention he believes was signalled by his survival of a severe illness he contracted when he was 10.
He claims to carry a splinter of the ‘true cross’ - I guess the one Jesus actually died on - and considers himself more of a priestly figure armed with relics and holy water than a paranormal investigator.
Sarchie has worked on many possessions and hauntings, claiming he didn’t charge a cent despite the high fee he probably got from the book sales and the film’s debut. The most famous tale is that of the ‘Halloween Horror’:
A woman named Gabby began to see a woman floating in a cloud of white smoke in the corner of her bedroom. It wasn’t long before this smoky woman began to speak through Gabby according to her partner Dominick.
Gabby’s friend then says this was the ghost of a woman murdered on her wedding night. She then apparently saw the spirit of her father. Activity followed with flying books, moans and growls, and the word ‘HELP’ written on the mirror. Eventually an incubus rocks up and is hell bent on attacking various family members.
When Gabby gets possessed in the presence of Sarchie and his paranormal-busting-partner, he exorcises her of the spirit.
In total, Sarchie has assisted in 25 exorcisms and hundreds of ‘house exorcisms’.
You can watch it for free on Netflix.

The Blob (1958/1988)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdUsyXQ8Wrs
*cue the canned screams*
In some rural town in America, a meteorite crashes to the ground. Someone investigates and a jelly globule attaches itself to their hand before consuming it. It then begins to consume their entire body. It’s not long before it starts to consume, well, everyone and everything in its path.
8 years before the horror icon first became a cult classic, two police officers in Philadelphia saw something float down from the sky. They thought it was a parachute and decided to investigate.
What they discovered was a six feet wide purple glob of odourless gloop. It was filled with crystals and gave off a mist. One of the police officers took the plunge - quite literally - and dipped a hand in. He kept the hand, but noticed the sticky residue left on his hands.
The gloop quickly disappeared and left the grass underneath it unbent. It was allegedly only there for 25 minutes. They were the only ones that saw it. It soon made its way into the press and the FBI asked the Air Force to investigate. They declined.
You can watch it for £3.50 on Amazon Prime.
Wolf Creek (2005)

Two British tourists are backpacking across Australia when they run into trouble in Wolf Creek National Park. A helpful local offers to help fix their broken down car and provide some shelter. Turns out the helpful local is actually a psychopathic xenophobic murderer. He entraps tourists, lures them to his shelter, and tortures/kills them.
Most gory horror films can be compared to real life murders and other crimes. Unfortunately, even the most imaginative forms of torture or murder has probably already happened. But the film was directly based on the backpacker murders committed by Ivan Milat in the 90s.
Milat murdered 7 people aged 19 to 22, preying on those encouraged to backpack across Australia after several tourism campaigns revealed how cheap and easy it was. In ‘92 and ‘93 the bodies were discovered in Belanglo State Forest with the wounds and injuries suggesting the scenes played out in film were similar to those Milat committed.
In late ‘93 a force dedicated to hunting the unknown killer emerged. It used gym memberships, gun licensing, and police records to narrow down a list of 32 suspects.
It was only when Paul Onions, a British backpacker reported he was nearly murdered near Belanglo State Forest that the police could pinpoint that Milat.

Open Water (2004)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9q1qJi1nMs
It’s everyone’s worst nightmare: being left in the middle of the ocean. A distant couple decide to take a relaxing break and head out for a scuba-diving vacation. Their holiday is ruined, however, when the guy driving the boat f*cks up the head count and thinks everyone is back on board after a diving sesh. The couple come back to the surface and discover the boat is gone.
Yep, this all happened in real life.
In 1998, Thomas and Eileen Lonergan went on a scuba diving trip to Australia’s Coral Sea. They were mistakenly stranded by the boat crew leading the dive and their absence wasn’t noticed until 2 days later when a bag containing their belongings was discovered.
The crew and other rescue teams searched the area but did not discover their bodies. Personal belongings were found.
A diver’s slate - a device for communicating underwater - was one of these items.
"Monday Jan 26; 1998 08am. To anyone who can help us: We have been abandoned on A[gin]court Reef by MV Outer Edge 25 Jan 1998 3pm. Please help to rescue us before we die. Help!!!"
The other items that washed up, including a wetsuit, suggested they had probably not fallen victim to shark attacks but had become disoriented, dehydrated, or injured by coral. Alternate theories claim it may have been a murder-suicide to avoid the slow, distressing death of being left at sea, or that it was a faked death/disappearance. No bank accounts had been tampered with, however.
Tougher regulations for scuba-diving in Australia shortly followed their disappearance.

The Rite (2011)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hG3ktopqv8
We follow exorcist-in-training Father Gary Thomas as he navigates the loss of this faith. When the opportunity for fighting growing demonic possessions arises, Thomas decides to become an exorcist. We see Thomas as he is confronted by evil and reaffirms his devotion to God.
Portrayed by veteran actor Anthony Hopkins, Father Gary Thomas is a real American exorcist - one of the 14 Vatican-verified exorcists working State-side. He did in fact study in the Vatican to become an exorcist, and another student he met there would chronicle his experiences in the book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist.
Thomas even spent a week on set advising the director, utilising his experiences of the 100 odd people he had seen possessed in his career.
Just like in the film, Thomas echoes that most people that come to him for an exorcism have been abused in their past, linking mental health issues to demonic attachment. Thomas also has a lot of praise for the film, claiming the way those possessed moved in a serpentine way is accurate to those he has seen:
“I was beginning to do some deliverance prayers. Within a few minutes she began to tremor and her facial countenance began to change. You saw a snake. She began sticking her tongue out like a snake and hissing and rolling her eyes. She coiled herself up.”
- Father Gary Thomas on a possessed Venezualan woman

The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Mm8Sbe__o
Anthony Hopkins refers to a staple horror film - a film with truth spilling like blood from a bloated corpse…
This psychological horror sees an FBI trainee as they work with an imprisoned serial killer to hunt down a murderer, Buffalo Bill. Add in just a dash of transphobia and we arrive at the film that made my parents actually walk out of the cinema when they first saw it.
First, let’s talk about Hannibal Lecter and his role as an advisor to the FBI: this has actually happened, using a seasoned killer to catch another. The most famous example of this is none other than Ted Bundy, one of the most infamous in history. Bundy told investigators to stake out the graves of victims or the places where bodies had been dumped as necrophiles like himself would return to the site.
Bundy actually helped them catch Gary Ridgeway who killed an estimated 90 people.
Now let’s turn to Buffalo Bill. The characters were never directly inspired by real people but their crimes were. He was an amalgamation of other crimes with Ed Gein serving as the main inspiration. Ed Gein, most known for skinning his victims and wearing the skins, took 9 lives and would also inspire the character Norman Bates.
He would make clothing out of body parts, make soup bowls from dug-up skulls, and build chairs from human bones.
Ted Bundy even made another appearance in Buffalo Bill’s character in terms of how he lures his victims, acting hurt and helpless until the victim was just within reach.
You can buy this film on Amazon Prime for £8.
Scream (1996)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWm_mkbdpCA
This satirical slasher redefined the genre, putting comedy firmly into horror as we know it. It follows Sidney Prescott, a preppy high school student, as she navigates high school drama and a rampant serial killer.
Just like The Silence Of The Lambs, the crimes witnessed in Scream had basis in reality. Daniel Rolling - the Gainesville Ripper - was an American serial killer who murdered 5 students in Florida within the short span of 4 days back in 1990.
Rolling would sexually assault, rape, threaten, and kill his young victims before leaving them in ‘sexual’ positions. He even decapitated one of those murdered and left the head on the shelf opposite the rest of the body amongst other vile acts. He later claimed his motive was to become a ‘superstar’ like Ted Bundy.
Yeah, that’s enough of that.
You can watch this on Amazon Prime for £2.50.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977/2006)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUQd9OB75dw
It’s time to hear about another vacay gone cray-cray. In the middle of a roadtrip to California, a family’s car breaks down in a mysterious area closed off to the public and they encounter a strange community of cannibals.
Instead of being based on modern crimes that hit far too close to home, this film is based on a historic event - or the legend of Sawney Bean.
Bean was a mythical leader of a cannibalistic group of insurgents in the 16th century. He grew up in a community of witches and later began his own community full of his children which he expanded with rampant incest. They would leave traps and eat their prey in a cave.
The King of Scotland, James VI, even led a team to root the family out of their lair. According to legend they were burnt at the stake while others were hung.
This tale also bears similarities to urban legends from Russia: there is a trope in the Southern Urals which claims after the Chernobyl accident irradiated peoples would become savage peoples, echoing the nuclear testing themes shown by the film.
You can watch this on Amazon Prime for £2.50.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1978)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKn9QIaMgtQ
In this cult class gore-fest we see a group of friends visit an old homestead but instead run into a family of murderous cannibals.
Yet again the crimes of Ed Gein make an appearance. The friends walk in on a home full of furniture made of human remains and meet a man - Leatherface - wearing a mask made of human skin. We also witness various people butchered in different brutal ways.
But this film also has a more political inspiration. Tobe Hooper - the director, producer, and writer - pinned his inspiration on changes in the cultural and political landscape, focusing on misinformation that overran America during the 70s.
*looks into camera a la Jim from The Office*
Hooper pinned the claims of a true story onto the film, responding to how he felt he was being lied to by the government regarding things like Watergate, the 1973 Oil Crisis, and the Vietnam War. The news only confirmed the brutal acts of humanity.
"man was the real monster here, just wearing a different face, so I put a literal mask on the monster in my film".
You can watch this for free on Amazon Prime.

“The Week In Tory returns for the second time in 4 days.
The weeks grow shorter, but the days last forever...
1. The consultant who advised the government to look for "alternative arrangements" on the Irish Border is in line for a £200m contract if alternative arrangements go ahead.
But to facilitate this, the government has to break international law with the Internal Market Bill (IMB)
Nobody can tell us what the "alternative arrangements" are, but the IMB passed through parliament anyway.
2. The UK’s highest-ranking law officer in Scotland resigned over the IMB
& The UK’s special envoy on media freedom, Amal Clooney (yes, that one) quit over IMB
3. The former (Tory appointed) ambassador to USA said the IMB was "hugely damaging to our international reputation"
4. Those snowflake liberal Remoaners Toby Young, Peter Hitchens and Tim Montgomerie turned on the govt over IMB. As did every living former-Prime Minister.
5. Joe Biden said there would be no UK/US Trade Deal if the IMB went ahead
But, Iain Duncan Smith said "we don’t need lectures" from Joe Biden
Trump’s special envoy to Northern Ireland also said there would be no Trade Deal
Apparently, Iain Duncan Smith does need lectures. Who knew?
6. Oh, and IMB also includes a provision allowing the government to break absolutely any law, absolutely any time!!!!!
7. Unrelated, I’m sure, but the number of "problem drinkers" in England doubled this year
So the government cut funding to alcohol addiction services
8. Dominic Raab, whose job it is to understand the Good Friday Agreement, admitted he hasn’t read the Good Friday Agreement
His excuse is: "it’s not a novel". True. Novels tend to be longer than 35 pages, aren't vital to solving conflicts that killed 3600 people
9. The Prime Minister, who literally voted to break a deal he signed with the EU, said the EU was "not negotiating in good faith"
The next morning, Northern Ireland minister and arch memo-misser Brandon Lewis went on TV and said "I believe the EU is negotiating in good faith"
10. It was revealed the Smart Freight System to handle post-Brexit trade won’t be ready until at least April 2021.
That’s at least 4 months without a freight handling system, during the time of year we rely on food imports the most
11. The Road Haulage Association said a meeting with Michael Gove to discuss border checks provided "no clarity" and was "a washout"
12. An official report says 2-day queues at Dover in January are "a certainty"
So the government closed a Covid test site in Kent, to convert it into a lorry park, in what experts (well, me) are calling "the world’s shittest game of whack-a-mole"
13. The government said people would be fined £1000 if they don’t self-isolate after getting a positive test
And then all tests ran out in the 10 worst-hit Covid hotspots
And then all home testing kits ran out, nationally
And then the website for booking tests broke, and just showed a series of error messages.
And then the government said the system was under strain because people were asking for tests when they didn’t know they were infected
So [deep breath] you must self-isolate after getting a test that doesn’t exist, and you can only get a test if you already know the result
14. Naturally, honesty no-fly-zone Home Office Secretary Priti Patel went on Radio 4 and announced tests were available everywhere and there were "no problems getting tests"
Same day - same hour, in fact - Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the testing system "has huge problems"
Jacob Rees-Mogg, who simply cannot shut up about fish, said we should stop the "endless carping" about not being tested for a fatal infection
15.Prime Minister Boris Johnson went on national TV and announced a "£100bn moonshot" approach to Covid, which would test "10m people per day"
Three days later, in front of a Parliamentary Committee, said he "didn’t recognise" the figure of 10m a day
And it was reported his half-brother is on the board of the business that would get most of the £100bn budget, which I’m sure is just a massive coincidence
Officials branded the moonshot as "Moonfuck"
16. And then Health Secretary Matt Hancock had to ask other cabinet ministers to stop referring to him as "Matt WankCock"
Despite appearances, these are not 7 year old boys
17. Food news, and Tory MP Douglas Ross said "I have seen the difference free school meals can make, and I want to make sure nobody falls through the cracks"
Douglas Ross voted against free school meals
18. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said we cannot put punitive restrictions on food imports from the EU (to force them to give up on Ireland), or we will starve
And then, minutes later, he agreed with a Brexiter MP who said we SHOULD put punitive restrictions on food imports from the EU
19. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said "I venerate our civil service" after sacking the innocent heads of multiple departments to protect friends including Gavin Williamson and Dominic Cummings. And as a result, people leaving the civil service rose 14% in a year
20. Planning-ahead news: an international conglomerate pulled out of a £16bn power project because the government hasn’t performed its part of the deal for the last 20 months
21. Funding cuts since 2010 meant the government had to inject £700m to prevent further education going bankrupt
22. This week it was found the government– which last week voted not to implement the recommendations of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry – has also failed to deliver its promise to remove the same dangerous cladding from at least 2000 tower blocks. Sleep well.
And then the government said files on Grenfell were "lost forever", after a laptop was wiped. Because everything is always stored on a single laptop. We all know this.
The government runs G-Cloud, its own dedicated cloud backup service, which has been active since 2012. So... yeah.
23. At a committee in parliament, an MP read out the Covid test figures. Dido Harding, in charge of testing, said “I’m sorry, that’s just not true, I don’t know where that number is from”
It was from her own report. Page 8. In bold type.
Dido Harding said "nobody could predict" a rise in demand for testing
Government scientists predicted it, and in a July report sent to Dido Harding – maybe it was a different one? - said "July and Aug must be a period of intense preparation for a September resurgence in Covid"
Oh, and standard advice says the NHS must always prepare for cold and respiratory infections to spike immediately after the return to school in September
Dido Harding wasted £13m on a "world-beating" testing app that cost £12.3m more than the German app, and didn’t work
She is now in charge of the test-and-trace service which has collapsed completely
So naturally, it was reported the government wants to sack the head of NHS England and install Dido Harding instead. Let's make the most of that successful record, eh?
24. In June the government tweeted "grab a drink and raise a glass, pubs are reopening"
The Prime Minister said "it is your patriotic duty to go out and enjoy yourselves"
This week they said the public is responsible, and "people going to the pub fuelled the rise in Covid"
So the government closed pubs at 10pm, because it’s well-known viruses only pop out for last orders.
25. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government "threw a protective ring around care homes"
A leaked document said care homes are now being asked to accept patients who are known to have Covid
26. Hospitals were banned from launching their own testing regime for staff and patience because… nope, nobody knows why. Just because.
27. There hasn’t been a meeting of COBRA (the government’s committee for national emergencies, headed by the Prime Minister) since 10th May
28. As Covid infections surged, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said restrictions are increasing, and pointed to a chart showing the government has "moved to alert level 3". Level 3 is "a gradual relaxing of restrictions". Not only can't he remember his own alert system, he can't even read it.
29. Despite travel restrictions, it was reported the Prime Minister flew off for a long weekend in Perugia, where his friend the Russian billionaire Evgeny Lebedev lives. He denies it, but the airport has his landing documents. So either he’s lying or... no, that’s the end of that sentence
30. In June the government spent £500m on a GPS satellite system to replace the one we lose due to Brexit
In July it was reported "we bought the wrong satellites"
This week the government cancelled the programme and began asking the EU if we can keep on using their GPS system
31. A cross-party committee of MPs found nurse-Ratched cosplayer Home Office Secretary Priti Patel "bases immigration policies on anecdotes and prejudice"
It found her dept has "no idea" what its annual spending achieves, and referred to "the wreckage that [Patel’s department’s] ignorance caused"
She is one of the favourites to replace Prime Minister Johnson
32. This is because it was reported the Prime Minister is thinking of quitting because he’s worried about his personal finances: the poor man has to "pay tax", "buy his own food" and "support 4 of his 6 children". Oh, the humanity!
33. And Jonathan Aitken – look him up – continues to get privileged access to parliament despite a ban on MPs who have served more than a year in prison. Which he did. And it was hilarious.
34. And finally, because he always needs a guest appearance, Chris Grayling, the man who awarded a ferry contract to a company with no ships, has got a £100k appointment to advise ports”-Russ

Sun Myung Moon’s second wife was Kim Chong-hwa. Both were jailed for bigamy since both were already married.
The family of the late Sun Myung Moon (of the Unification Church) is ‘more corrupt than you can imagine’
Sunday Journal USA Vol. 878, April 25, 2013 (part 2)
Moon Sun Myung married his first wife, Miss Choi Seon-gil, on April 28, 1945. [She was 19 when she was first introduced to Mr Moon.] They had a son, Moon Sung-jin, who was born on April 9, 1946. It became known that Moon Sun Myung and Choi Seon-gil divorced on January 8, 1957, on the grounds of the so-called Unification Church pikareum doctrine (a ceremony to restore the blood lineage [through ritual sex]). ...
Mr. Moon’s second wife was Mrs. Kim Chong-hwa. At this time, after being accused by Kim’s husband Cheong Myeong-seon of being involved in a ceremony to restore the blood lineage [pikareum], Moon Sun Myung [and Kim Chong-hwa were arrested on] February 22, 1948 and he was sentenced to 5 years in prison. He carried out the sentence at prisons in Pyongyang, Daedong and Heungnam.

“The police of the North Korean puppet regime arrested Sun Myung Moon [in Pyongyang] on the charge of bigamy/sexual immorality. The reason was the husband of a certain Mrs Kim [金鍾和 Kim Chong-hwa] made an accusation to the police. The husband now lives in Seoul. At that time Moon said that he and Mrs Kim should marry because he had a revelation from God, although Moon still had a legal wife [Choi Seon-gil in Seoul]. When the police stepped in Moon was in the middle of doing this coerced marriage with the woman follower, Mrs Kim. The police arrested them. Mrs Kim was sentenced to ten months in prison. Moon was given a sentence of five years and six months. Mr Kim Kyong-rae interviewed this Mrs Kim in person and collected this information, and then wrote this report.” from The Real Face of the Principle Movement – What is the group doing? She was the women’s group leader at the Somunae-pak Church, one of the largest Presbyterian churches in the city. She would become his main follower in north Korea. ‘A great preacher has come from Seoul,’ she told her husband’s cousin, Kim In-ju, also a Presbyterian…”
“In January, 1947, he [Moon] moved to the house of Kim Chong-hwa and her husband, Chong Myong-sun, who had become the leading members of his small group.”
“In Pyongyang, his followers did not keep in contact with each other. The only member who could have held the others together in Moon’s absence [in Heungnam prison] was Kim Chong-hwa, who had been sentenced to eighteen months in prison at the same time as Moon, but she had been unable to reconcile her faith in Moon with God’s apparent inability to prevent him from being sent to prison. She was released after one year, and was no longer interested in him or his followers.”

I don’t believe that abortion is wrong just because the fetus/embryo can feel pain. In fact, I believe abortion is wrong and whether or not the fetus can feel pain, while being killed and if it couldn’t, still wouldn’t be enough for me to deny that abortion isn’t ok. (From fertilization) However I did find this article..and it seems to be trying to provide evidence that fetuses feel pain before 20 week, and that would change my perspective on abortion a whole lot. So, if you can provide evidence that this article is false please tell me and I will delete this post.
”Historical Development
On January 30, 1984, President Reagan spoke at the Annual Convention of Religious Broadcasters saying, “There’s another grim truth we should face up to: Medical science doctors confirm that when the lives of the unborn are snuffed out, they often feel pain, pain that is long and agonizing.”   [full remarks available here]In response to President Reagan’s statement, a prestigious group of professors, including pain specialists and two past presidents of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology sent the President a well-documented statement showing their strong agreement.   A copy of the letter can be viewed here.
° ° ° ° °
In an early analysis (following the speech from President Reagan) titled, “Fetal Pain and Abortion: The Medical Evidence,” Vincent J. Collins, M.D., Steven R. Zielinski, M.D., and Thomas J. Marzen, Esq. wrote,“But the presence of a functioning cortex is not necessary to pain sensation.  Even complete removal of the cortex does not eliminate the sensation of pain; no portion of the cortex, if artificially stimulated, results in pain sensation…The requisite structures for the sensation of pain are, therefore, the nociceptors, a continuous neural pathway of sensory nerves that transmit pain impulses from the nociceptor through the peripheral nervous system and the spinal cord to the thalamus, and the thalamus.  In order to determine that pain is sensed, however, these structures must not only be in place, but also known to be functioning.”
° ° ° ° °
Not long after, interest in understanding and conducting medical research on fetal pain began.    Today, there are hundreds of studies which confirm the existence of fetal pain – overwhelmingly – by 20 weeks.  Now, much of the scientific focus is on treating that pain.
° ° ° ° °
With nearly 1000 scholarly articles citing to this early comprehensive pain study, the authors write,
“Various putative neurotransmitters called the tachykinins (substance P, neurokinin A, neuromedin K, and so forth) have been identified in the central nervous system, but only substance P has been investigated thoroughly and shown to have a role in the transmission and control of pain impulses. Neural elements containing substance P and its receptors appear … at 12 to 16 weeks of gestation. A high density of substance P fibers and cells have been observed in multiple areas of the fetal brain stem associated with pathways for pain perception and control and visceral reactions to pain.” [internal citations omitted]

Another early and persistently cited source writes,
“Endorphinergic cells have been observed in the anterior and the intermediate lobes of the fetal pituitary gland and were responsive to CRF [corticotropin-releasing factor] stimulation in vitro by 20 weeks’ gestation.”  [internal citations omitted]

This study provides the first direct evidence that the fetus has a hormonal response to invasive stimuli.
“The rise in both β-endorphin and cortisol concentrations during transfusion (median increase 590% and 183% respectively) was greater than observed in preterm neonates undergoing surgery under light anaesthasia (approximately 80% and 105% respectively)….Just as physicians now provide neonates with adequate analgesia, our findings suggest that those dealing with the fetus should consider making similar modifications to their practice. This study provides early insight into the flawed assumptions on pain.
“Because self-report may be absent or a faulty source of inference, nonverbal behavioral information is often needed and used for pain assessment.” The study also says, “Such evidence [behavioral response associated with painful stimuli] suggests that the sensation of pain requires no prior experience, and appears early in ontogeny in order to serve as a signaling system for tissue damage. Human fetuses mounted hormonal responses to painful stimuli delivered in utero, which were similar to the hormonal responses of preterm neonate or older children experiencing such stimuli.”

Some say the fetus may experience more pain than neonate counterparts.
“The last pathways in the nociceptive system to be formed are the inhibitory descending serotonin neurones, which can block the ascending pathways. These do not form until after birth, raising the possibility that the fetus may actually be more sensitive to noxious stimuli than the older child….” [internal citations omitted]

This study pointed to evidence of the stress response
“Invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques are increasingly applied to the fetus. It is not known if the fetus feels pain during such procedures, but the fetus does mount significant stress hormonal and circulatory changes in response to these from 18–20 weeks. Perinatal stress may have long-term neurodevelopmental implications.”
Smith et. al. Pain and stress in the human fetus; European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, Volume 92, Issue 1, September 2000, Pages 161-165.
° ° ° ° °
This landmark study provided further evidence of, and recommended treatment for the stress response.
“Our group has shown that the human fetus from 18–20 weeks elaborates pituitary-adrenal, sympatho-adrenal, and circulatory stress responses to physical insults.” P 828 “This study provides the first evidence that direct fetal analgesia reduces stress responses to intervention inutero. Further experiments are now indicated using higher-dose fentanyl, as well as studies using different drugs and different modes of administration. [internal citations omitted]

° ° ° ° ° More evidence:
“The first neurons to link the cortex with the rest of the brain are in place from about 16 weeks’ gestation. Their activation could be associated with unpleasant conscious experience, even if not pain. Thalamic fibers first penetrate the subplate zone at about 17 weeks gestation and the cortex at 20 weeks. These issues are important, not only because of immediate suffering, but also because of possible long term adverse effects of this early experience.”
Glover, Vivette The fetus may feel pain from 20 weeks; The Fetal Pain Controversy. Conscience Pg. 35(3) Vol. 25 No. 3 ISSN: 0740-6835
° ° ° ° °
With the fetal stress response fully accepted, attention turned to more efficiently treating it.
“In contrast to DZP, REMI has the potential, as do other opioids, to provide effective fetal analgesia after accidental direct stimulation (e.g., touching with endoscopes). Therefore, it has been suggested that pain relief has to be provided during in utero interventions on the fetus from mid-gestation (20 weeks) on. Direct administration of fentanyl to the human fetus has been shown to block the fetal stress response during mid-gestational in utero interventions. In our trial inadvertent touching of an immobilized fetus resulted in fetal “awakening.” Therefore, when fetal analgesia or blunting of the fetal stress response is required, additional drugs (opioids and nondepolarizing muscle relaxants) must be administered directly to the fetus.” [internal citations omitted]

° ° ° ° ° This study presented first-hand testimony of behavioral responses.
“One account: ‘Midwife, 9: But when it comes to fetal pain, I don’t know—I really don’t know and I think it’s all very unclear, but I would say it’s 21 weeks—whether we say it’s before that I don’t know. Do they [fetuses] know what pain is to be able to perceive it as pain? But certainly, they react to having a needle stuck in their chest and their heart stopped with a drug.’ Another account:  ‘Gynaecologist, 22:After 18 weeks if I do a feticide, I put a needle in the baby’s heart – I’m not sure it’s necessary, but I do it I suppose as a sort of PR exercise, because I think it’s important to be seen to be caring about the fetus if you see what I mean.. so I feel I need to do it, it’s the politics of caring about the Fetus.'”
C. Williams; Framing the fetus in medical work: rituals and practices; Social Science & Medicine. 60 (2005) 2085–2095
° ° ° ° ° This study criticized a JAMA study that placed fetal pain in the third trimester.
“Closer examination reveals three major flaws in the scientific rationale of recent reviews purporting to rule out the occurrence of fetal pain. First, pain perception is presented as mediated by a hard-wired system, passively transmitting nociceptive impulses until “perception” occurs in the somatosensory cortex. Pain research over the past 40 years, beginning with the gate control theory and extended through vast amounts of clinical and experimental data, has long outgrown this Cartesian view of pain. Based upon this progress, we can assert with confidence that nociceptive signaling in prenatal development depends not only on the context and characteristics of the stimulus, but also on the fetal behavioral state at that time. For example, fetuses undergoing intrauterine invasive procedures were reported to show coordinated responses promoting the avoidance of tissue injury. Second, reviewers of this literature incorrectly assume that pain perception during fetal life must engage the same neural structures as those used by adults. Lack of development of the latter areas is then used to support the argument that fetuses do not feel pain until late gestation. Clinical and animal research shows that the fetus or neonate is not a “little adult,” that the structures used for pain processing in early development are unique and different from those of adults, and that many of these fetal structures and mechanisms are not maintained beyond specific periods of early development. The immature pain system thus uses the neural elements available during each stage of development to carry out its signaling role. Third, such reviews presuppose that cortical activation is necessary for fetal pain perception. Based upon this assumption, the lack of evidence for pain-specific thalamocortical connections supports their contention against fetal pain. This line of reasoning, however, ignores clinical data cited above that ablation or stimulation of the primary somatosensory cortex does not alter pain perception in adults, whereas thalamic ablation or stimulation does. The thalamus plays a pivotal role in regulating the spinal-brainstem-spinal loops that mediate context-dependent descending facilitation or inhibition, coordinated via the key mechanisms underlying consciousness.” [ internal citations omitted]

° ° ° ° °
This study writes that while “evidence for conscious pain perception is indirect, evidence for the subconscious incorporation of pain into neurological development and plasticity is incontrovertible.” Expanded finding are below.
“ Physiological stress is different from the emotional pain felt by the more mature fetus or infant, and this stress is mitigated by pain medication such as opiates. The plasticity of the developing brain makes it vulnerable to the stressors that cause long-term developmental changes, ultimately leading to adverse neurological outcomes. Whereas evidence for conscious pain perception is indirect, evidence for the subconscious incorporation of pain into neurological development and plasticity is incontrovertible. Scientific data, not religious or political conviction, should guide the desperately needed research in this field. In the meantime, it seems prudent to avoid pain during gestation.”
Lowrey, et al. Neurodevelopmental Changes of Fetal Pain. Seminars in Perinatology. Volume 31, Issue 5, October 2007, Pages 275-282.
° ° ° ° °
This study was hugely influential, but more as challenging those who require later gestation consciousness before they will call it or treat “pain.”
“The tacit consensus concerning the cerebral cortex as the ‘organ of consciousness,’ ” Merker wrote, may “have been reached prematurely, and may in fact be seriously in error.”
Merker, Consciousness without a cerebral cortex: A challenge for Neuroscience and medicine; Behavioral and Brain Sciences. (2007) 30, 63–134  available at:  http://www.willamette.edu/~levenick/cs448/Merker.pdf
o In response to this study titled, Consciousness, cortical function, and pain perception in nonverbal humans; K. J. S. Anand, the author writes,
“Within the medical/scientific community, concepts of pain are based on its semantic definition rather than the actual experience it signifies. Pain is defined by Merskey and Bogduk (1994) as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage,” followed by the note that, “Pain is always subjective. Each individual learns the application of the word through Commentary/Merker: Consciousness without a cerebral cortex experiences related to injury in early life” (Merskey & Bogduk 1994). Over the years, this definition has propagated undue credibility for the verbal expression of pain, defined within the context of adult consciousness, engendering medical practices that regard verbal self-report as the “gold standard” for pain (K. D. Craig 1997; Cunningham 1998; 1999). Major flaws in this definition include its excessive reliance on verbal self report, the criterion that some form of learning is required in order to experience pain, and its focus on use of this word rather than the experience of pain (Anand & Craig 1996; Anand et al. 1999; K. D. Craig 1997; Shapiro 1999;Wall 1997).”
° ° ° ° °
This recent study highlights the forming consensus.
“There is considerable evidence that the fetus may experience pain. Not only is there a moral obligation to provide fetal anaesthesia and analgesia, but it has also been shown that pain and stress may affect fetal survival and neurodevelopment.”

A close examination of the story. Part 14: Katarina's parents, Dom and whatever their name really was.
In the previous parts we have explored the story, how when looked closely it crumbles. We have looked at Fitch, Katarina, Reddington, the abduction of Liz, Jennifer, Pete, Nik, Kate's plan. At each corner, superficially, the apparent narrative makes sense, but when we examine it, that narrative crumbles, and what is left creates a much more interesting story.
Let us take now Katarina's parents, and see what we know, Liz's point of view, and what the apparent narrative would have us believe.
Tumblr media
We have Dom Wilkinson, a name he says he took after "migrating" to the US after the Cold War, and for lack of a better name, Lena Volkova, as Katarina's mother appears in IMBD and Amazon, played by Andrea Sooch.
Tumblr media
She is also known as Virginia Lopatin, the name she took 2 weeks after Cape May when she boarded a ferry from NY to CT, then marrying Ted King in 1998 in Chicago.
Tumblr media
above: (the information Ward digs on Virginia Lopatin, a name first used on a ferry ride in 1991)
What we KNOW about Dom
We have a very good grasp of Dom. He was a key figure in the story, who appeared in 7 episodes with speaking parts. And his scenes were always compelling, which made it easy to forget all that did not fit. But there is plenty that makes no sense in the current narrative.
We know Dom has a house in upstate New York, within driving distance of the PO box in Wilmington, NY that supposedly Katarina set up as a communication system.
In that house there are no photos, but there is a piano that Dom plays and music sheets that belonged to Katarina.
In Dom's barn Red had stored the island box, and in that barn there are toys dating from the 1960s and 1970s, and a trunkful of what Dom says are all the memories of his daughter: drawings, toys, a ballet case, stuffed toys, a doll, and glitter.
Tumblr media
Dom will not have lugged these from Russia. Dom lived in the US or Canada when Katarina was growing up. All the toys are from the 1960s & 70s.
Among the drawings are one of the house with the blue door, and one of a man with dark hair and two girls with dark hair too. Is that Dom? Who are the girls then?
Likely the identical ones in the Summer Palace are copies Liz wrote her name on, as the ones in the barn have blots of water paint, as opposed to the crayons Liz had in the Summer Palace:
Tumblr media
Dom also keeps some old weapons and Russian explosives.
Tumblr media
how likely is to have brought these from the USSR all the way to the US?
Cooper located for Liz a CIA report detailing an investigation into Dom as the KGB agent known as Oleander, that was dismissed because of lack of evidence.
Oleander was the name of a Russian operative active during the Cold War.... I'm not sure he's even still alive. A few years ago, the CIA thought he might be living here in the United States under an assumed name. That was never proven. No charges were ever filed.... Agent Keen, be very careful. If that man is the operative they call Oleander, he's extremely dangerous. And he won't appreciate FBI agents dropping by to ask him questions.
Dom's prints are not in the system (which would be impossible for a legal immigration), and his face is not in any facial identification database. Ressler described him as a ghost.
Your grandfather.... Look, all I have is a photo.... My only regret is that I hit a dead end. 'Cause that guy he's a ghost.
Dom was described by Red as being a Rostov, and seems to be saying that if he goes to a hospital, he would have questions asked related to that, he would not want to answer
He's a Rostov, Elizabeth. If we take him to an emergency room, questions will be asked, questions he's not prepared to answer.
This seems to indicate a disease of some sort that he would have to explain. The aplastic anemia suffered by the male Rostovs like Constantin comes to mind. But if he survived to age 81 then he must either be the uncle who contracted the Ribowski virus which gave him leukemia, which counteracted his anemia, or he followed the treatment of that distant Rostov who did.
RED ABOUT CONSTANTIN: Kirk is dying. And the Ribowski virus is a temporary antidote to what afflicts him.... He has aplastic anemia-- a systemic failure to produce viable bone-marrow cells. It's been a death sentence for generations of men in his family, except a distant uncle, who had contracted the Ribowski virus. After getting the virus, the uncle lived longer than any other Rostov with the blood disease
This would mean that Dom's real last name is Rostov, because the disease is transmitted along the paternal line, and Katarina married a distant cousin, Constantin Rostov.
Dom also seems to have asked Fakerina to help him protect Katarina, promising her nobody would get hurt:
Dom promised me no one would get hurt. Said he loved his child and just wanted her to be safe.
and then convinced Ilya to betray Fakerina and set her up to be killed by a car bomb in Belgrade, which backfired when Fakerina survived. He says he did it to keep "his own" safe.
Despite all my anger, my frustration, I did what I thought was necessary ... Did I make mistakes? Yes. Do I deserve to die for them? Eh, maybe. If I die, at least I will go to my grave knowing that I did what I did to protect my own.
Dom seem to have held Reddington is low esteem:
RED TO DOM: You don't have to believe me or help me or like me. You never have. I don't know why you'd have to start now.
DOM TO RED: Like you care. Like you're even capable of considering anyone else's feelings but your own!
as we see in the conversation in Belgrade, after the explosion failed to kill Fakerina:
YOUNG ILYA: I should tell him.
YOUG DOM: We're not telling him anything.
YOUNG ILYA:  Oh. I know how you feel, but Reddington deserves to know what we've done.
Who Dom really was, his present identity or where he lived was not known to Fakerina, or to Kate.
But the one thing she doesn't know is you. I haven't told you about Masha because I didn't wanna risk coming here or making contact with you again until this fight was over.
Dom belongs to the geographic cluster of New York. Since Katarina says to him that she was not a traitor, and she was acting with Fitch, we can only surmise that Dom was not really a KGB agent, but pretended to be one.
Dom, according to Ilya's memories in Orion, seemed to be concerned with keeping Liz safe. For Dom, Liz is always Masha.
YOUNG DOM: She has to die. It's the only way to protect Masha
Ilya does not seem to like Dom much in the Orion memory recall, yet he accepts betraying Fakerina for Liz.
Dom also said that the last time he SAW his daughter was in the rear view mirror of his Wagoneer, a sentiment he repeated to Liz, that he had not SEEN his daughter since he got the key to that post office box.
I got this 28 years ago. And in 28 years, there was not a week that has passed that I haven't tried to use it. I'd say a silent prayer first hoping, praying to find something from her.... Last time I saw my daughter was in this rearview mirror nearly 30 years ago. If my Katarina was still here, she would have let me know.
Notice he says he has not SEEN Katarina, nothing about being in contact with her, hearing from her, etc.
Dom has an accident, around the time he picked up Lena's letter . I think he was extremely upset about this letter, likely telling him (and maybe Katarina) she was dying.
Tumblr media
RED: I got your message about the accident.
DOM: I sent it a month ago.
RED: Yeah. Three months after it happened.
DOM: I'm fine, by the way.
RED: Car's on life support, but you're doing fine
and we saw a locket, supposedly given to Katarina by Dom, inscribed in Russian, in which Katarina's name is written as Ekaterina. A Russian from of the name, but not the same name:
Tumblr media
What we KNOW about Lena
Is basically nothing. We have what Ressler's research found:
that one person doesn't exist before buying a ticket for that ferry. Everything about her credit rating, social security, mortgage payments it exists only after she bought that ticket, not before
Name's Virginia Lopatin. Married Tim King in '98. Lives in Chicago with a dog and a cat, three credit cards, and a subscription to Foreign Affairs. Says she's 81. Rostova would be 59... .She was 22 when Katarina was born.
The CIA knows Katarina's mother's age when Katarina was born, but claim not to be interested in "Katarina Rostova"?
There are a lot of ways to convey that information, for example it could have come from Velov. Instead, the CIA knows this. They also "know" the father was KGB, but the man investigated as Oleander, had an half-hearted investigation dropped, and the prints and face are NOT in the system.
The CIA did not investigate the ferry sighting, because KR had not used that name in the manifesto?
So, it would seem the CIA knew who Katarina's parents were, and they were trying hard to not do anything about it. Why?
We know she was in the New York area in 1991, as it seems she boarded the ferry 2 weeks after the Cape May suicide, with the identity Virginial Lopatin. She took the ferry in Long Island to Connecticut, supposedly to go to Boston, if we can believe that art of Rassvet.
Tumblr media
We loose track of her for seven years until she reappears in Chicago in 1998, where she met and married Ted King. It is notable that she is part of two geographic clusters (next one in series) : New York and Chicago (Kate, Kate's sister, Tom & Tom's foster parents, the Phelps).
Tumblr media
ABOVE: Lena as Virginia King, married to Ted King since 1998
Her cover story to Ted was pretty thin and other unbelievable except for the sap in love with her:
I met Virginia in 1998. The love of my life. I-I knew it the moment I laid eyes on her. She told me she was from Saint Petersburg, uh, that she'd split with her husband in her 40s, came to America to start over, and spent the rest of her life here.
Tumblr media
and we know the story Ted said that Virginia had said about a photo Ted found in the pages of a book:
I found a photograph between the pages of a book in the bedroom. She said it was the only photo she had of her daughter, and that they'd had a falling-out and that she hoped that they would reconnect at some point.... Virginia didn't talk about it. She said it was "too painful," that, uh, the falling-out that they had had was her "greatest regret. " .
Tumblr media
Ressler assumed that was Katarina in the photo. But we do not know that. Is the daughter the woman or the baby. If it is the woman, is that Katarina, or did Lena had another daughter? One she was estranged from?
Two things are certain: That woman had dark hair and dark eyes, not the red hair and light eyes we had seen young Katarina as, and looks similar to a photo seen in Scottie Hargrave house/office, and similar to Liz.
and that seems rather curious when we consider that drawing among Katarina's toys of a man with two dark haired girls. Was Katarina not really a red head with light eyes but a dark brunette with dark eyes, and like Vanessa Cruz, she used contacts and a wig or hair dye?
Tumblr media
The lamp is identical to one in Red's Bethesda apartment.
Finally, Katarina, in Rassvet (so take it with a good handful of salt) tells Lena she is a traitor, which seems to indicate that Lena was a Russian citizen and a soviet.
So the supposedly Russian parent was living in the USA and the one who has the American roots was supposed to be the KGB?
What is remarkable to me, is the difference of Lena and Dom. Lena made a new life, remarried, and seemed interested in foreign policy (or that was where the advertisements-codes) appeared.
Dom, on the other hand, retreated to his lonely cabin in the woods, living in isolation, surrounded by memories:
DOM: You said it, chum. Look around here. You call this living? After I lost my daughter I crawled crawled into the wilderness like a mortally wounded animal to get as far away from the pack as I could, to to run out the clock. Run out the clock and die. And If you came for a survival manual, you won't find it here
&
DOM: You have no idea how I feel surrounded by nothing but memories every Christmas, every time it rains.
RED: The car.
DOM: Yes.
RED: The last time you saw Katarina was in the rearview mirror.
DOM: Some memories you want to hold onto. Most haunt you like a curse.
And what is similar: The CIA seems curiously uninterested in finding either one of them.
The Russians seemed interested in finding Dom (or Katarina through Dom), but nobody seems to bother with Lena, the one whose cover story was that she was Russian.
The relationship between them is uncertain. We have no idea if they were married, if they work together, of they were sleeper spies, if Lena (or Dom) were honeytraps.
Her grandparents, according to Liz's point of view.
Liz believes Dom was a Russian KGB agent codenamed Oleander, who in 1991 was living in Moscow, where she was also living at the time, and from where RR took her. After the events of Cape May, and after Katarina and Ilya went all the way to Moscow to talk to him, he got Katarina and Ilya out of the USSR and eventually arrived in the US, where Katarina gave him a key to the PO box in Wilmington, NY. Liz then learned Dom set Fakerina to die, but it backfired, and gave credence to the idea that KR was still alive.
Liz has no idea of the trunk of Katarina's old toys dating from the 1960s and 70s, she has no idea Katarina grew up in the United States, and likely, Dom had that little cottage in the woods (likely as an escape) for Katarina to have drawn it as a child.
She believes Dom to be a former KGB agent, who escaped to the US after Katarina betrayed Russia. And in the last episode of season 7 Liz seems to take Fakerina's side, believing she is Katarina, her mother.
Our father, the real Raymond Reddington, cheated on your mother with mine a Russian agent named Katarina Rostova.... He took me from her in Russia. She followed him to America where we were staying.
Liz, even though she has been to the Summer Palace, seemed to have believed the narrative that she lived in Russia. We know that they lived in Canada, where all of Kate's memories are.
Liz knows for sure only the story's told in Rassvet. It is uncertain what if any Resslerler told her about her grandmother, or if he even showed her the photo of the estranged daughter.
In the Rassvet tale, Katarina had Ilya empty his bank account and filled a suitcase with cash and new identity papers, to protect her from the fallout of her activities with the cabal. Katarina met her in Long Island, on the ferry terminal, and send her mother with a new identity, supposedly to Boston.
Liz may know Lena died in hospice, but it is uncertain. She seemed curiously uninterested in her maternal grandmother, never even mentioning her.
Conclusions
Tumblr media
Let us move on to how Katarina tells her mother in Rassvet she IS a traitor, which would imply Lena was KGB and a Soviet asset or citizen, but she tells Dom she is NOT a traitor, because she knew she was working with high levels of the government (Fitch).
So the mother seems to be a KGB asset and the father seem to be CIA pretending to be a KGB one, using the name of a beautiful and deadly bush and flower of the same name: Oleander. Like Rose. Why not Foxglove, Oliver, Lawrence, Reed, Cyprus, Basil, Rowan or Narcissus?
Unless the REAL OLEANDER was Lena.
Both of Katarina's parents have links to New York. The PO box in Wilmington, NY is within driving distance of Dom's cabin, as he drives each week, the last time, when he picks up Lena's letter. Coincidence? I do not think so.
But there seem to be no clarity about the situation between Lena and Dom. Nobody has mentioned Lena to Dom, not even in Rassvet, as if it were a forbidden subject. Katarina mentions Dom (Papa) to her, but not vice versa.
What kind of relationship they had? Were they married? Lovers? Coworkers? Why were both in New Yok?
Why does Lena meet Katarina on the New Yok side of the Cross Sound Ferry, which is in Long Island? Was she living in Long Island?
We know another character who supposedly goes to Long Island when she leaves Liz: Jennifer

The Top 25 Movies About Social Media to Add to Your Watch List
New Post has been published on http://tiptopreview.com/the-top-25-movies-about-social-media-to-add-to-your-watch-list/
The Top 25 Movies About Social Media to Add to Your Watch List
Social media has inspired comedies, dystopian thrillers, documentaries, and horror movies.
Here is a list of the best movies related to social media, in no particular order.
1. The Social Dilemma, 2020
Documentary
Netflix
A popular movie that can’t be recommended enough.
Even if you’re in the business there are parts of this movie that will still startle.
Featuring interviews with people who invented a variety of the algorithms.
This movie balances the shock factor of what’s going on behind the scenes of social media with insights into how social media can be improved.
youtube
2. Love, Guaranteed, 2020
Romantic Comedy
Netflix
Stars Rachael Leigh Cook, Damon Wayans Jr., Heather Graham, Kandyse McClure (Dualla on Battlestar Galactica).
Social media is defined as a social network, and what kind of network is more social than a dating app?

This romantic comedy follows an attorney and her client who claims that a dating site guarantees love is offering a false promise.
As evidence, he offers himself, who has engaged in a thousand dates and failed to find love.
youtube
3. The Hater, 2020
Thriller
Netflix
This is a great movie that you might never have heard of but should definitely check out.
It’s a fast-paced thriller and drama about using social media to settle personal scores.
The hero of the movie is both likable and worthy of loathing.
Don’t be put off by the fact that this is a Polish movie and you might have to read subtitles.
This movie tells a story of harnessing the power of social media like a weapon against those who may or may not deserve it.

It’s highly relevant in today’s world of disinformation amplification yet it’s not really about social media in the same way that a movie like Taxi Driver is not about guns.
Both movies, Taxi Driver and The Hater, share a theme of the misfit trying to fit in and not really able to find a way in until circumstances create an opportunity.
youtube
4. Emily in Paris, 2020
Comedy-drama
Netflix
I cheated.
This isn’t a movie.
But so many who have an interest in social media marketing and movies will find this so interesting that I had to fit it in.
The central character – Emily (duh!), is a social media marketer from Chicago who is sent to a Paris office where she’s met with skepticism.
She changes her Instagram handle to @emilyinparis and starts posting photos, her account goes viral.
The series is from the mind of Darren Star, the writer behind such hits as Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and Sex and the City.
If any of those are your favorites then it’s likely you’ll enjoy Emily in Paris as well.
There’s a bit of suspension of disbelief necessary regarding the social media, but Emily in Paris is fundamentally a fantasy not a documentary.
A little fantasy helps to get through these dark and pandemic times.

5. Die Influencers Die, 2020
Horror
Roku
This is a B-Movie slasher exploitation flick about a group of easy-to-hate influencers meeting dreadful ends.
What’s not to like right?
Millions of social media followers are dangled in front of a small group of social media influencers in exchange for spending the night at a reportedly haunted studio in Las Vegas.

For those who enjoy heavy metal, are annoyed by social media influencers to no end, and harbor a fondness for killer clowns…this movie is for you.
youtube
6. Spree, 2020
Social media satire/Horror
Amazon, Vudu
A spree is defined as a sustained period of time during which an unrestrained activity is indulged.
That’s pretty much what this movie is about, a rideshare driver going to the ultimate extreme to achieve Internet fame.
Starring Joe Keery (“Steve” in Stranger Things), Spree is a dark and violent comedy that’s not necessarily for everyone.

7. #realityhigh, 2017
Dramedy
Netflix
This is a teen dramedy about a girl going through the social media popularity rabbit hole and becoming another person to please others.

8. Hard Candy, 2005
Thriller/Horror/Revenge
Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, YouTube
This is an under-the-radar movie that might make some uncomfortable.
It stars Ellen Page (Juno, Umbrella Academy), Patrick Wilson (Conjuring, Watchmen, Aquaman), and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy, Sideways, Princess Diaries).
The movie won several awards including three at the 2005 Sitges Film Festival (Best Motion Picture, Best Screenplay, and an Audience Award for Best Motion Picture) and four awards at the 2006 Spanish Malaga Film Festival (Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Cinematographer).
Ellen Page won Best Actress at the 2006 Austin Film Critics Association Awards.
This is an intelligent suspense and thriller.
But it’s not for the squeamish.
It can get grueling for some.
Ellen Page stars as a 17-year-old teenager who entraps an older man via a chat room.

Expecting illicit activities the teenager turns the table on him.
Again, I must warn that this movie is not for those with delicate sensibilities.
youtube
9. Searching, 2018
Thriller
Amazon, Vudu, YouTube
A movie starring John Cho (Harold & Kumar, Star Trek) in the missing person genre.
The daughter goes missing and police lack leads, so the father takes to the Internet to trace the daughter’s virtual steps to find her.
youtube
10. Ingrid Goes West, 2017
Comedy
Hulu
Stars Elizabeth Olsen and Aubrey Plaza.

Aubrey Plaza is a great actress who consistently surprises with the quirky nuance she brings to her roles and that’s also the case here.
This film is in the stalker genre but it’s also a satire of the influencer world.

11. The Social Ones, 2020

Perfect Memento in Strict Sense: Pages 22-24 - Youmu Konpaku
Half-Human Half-Phantom Gardener
Youmu Konpaku
Tumblr media
Power: The ability to use sword techniques
Threat Level: Medium
Human friendship level: High
Main place of activity: Netherworld
Since phantoms are formless, most people are unable to distinguish between normal ones.
The Konpaku family are not simple phantoms, but are a lineage of mixed race between humans and phantoms.
Her appearance does not differ from that of normal humans.
Youmu's thought patterns are similar to a normal human's for the most part, but it's said her body temperature is a bit lower.
Her lifespan is far longer than that of normal humans.
This is probably because she is half phantom, which do not have distinct lifespans.
A large phantom accompanies her human form.
This phantom is the characteristic of half-human half-phantoms, and is one of the ways to distinguish her from normal humans.
The largish phantom acts on the will of the half-human half-phantoms.
Also, unlike normal phantoms, its body is not particularly cold to the touch.
Youmu serves as the gardener for Hakugyokurou(*1) in the Netherworld, and is also a live-in sword instructor, but lately she can frequently be seen in this world(*2).
Though, it is likely because lately(*3) the barrier between this world and the next has weakened.
Many theories have been put forth to explain the weakening of this barrier, but its true cause is the whim of the youkai who manipulates boundaries.
Weapons and Abilities
She possesses superior swordsmanship, and is a master of the two-handed technique.
The two swords she uses are called Hakurouken and Roukanken.
The longer sword is Roukanken.
It's believed that Roukanken was forged by youkai, and it's too long to be used by normal humans.
It's said that it has the power to kill ten phantoms in one stroke, but as one cannot actually kill spirits(*4), it's unknown if this is true(*5).
The other sword, Hakurouken, is the ancestral sword of the Konpaku family, and it's said to have the power to dispel the confusion of those it cuts.
That is, using it on phantoms will send them to nirvana, and using it on humans will cause them discomfort and a bit of pain.
The exact details of its function are unclear, but it can only be handled by the Konpaku family.
Daily Life
She lives in the Netherworld in Hakugyokurou.
She wakes up early in the morning before the mistress of the estate to patrol the gardens.
During the day she tends to the gardens and trains her sword technique, and will go out on errands if called.
At night, she patrols once again, and supposedly goes to bed only after confirming that the mistress has done so.
If she were to discover an intruder at this time, she would surely cut them down at once whether they were human or youkai.
Eyewitness Reports
"When I go to visit the Netherworld, she always swings those swords at me. It'd be nice if she'd actually check who was coming." (Reimu Hakurei)
It's questionable why living humans would go to the Netherworld to visit.
"She comes shopping here a lot. It's like someone is coming to take you to the next world, and it feels pretty weird." (Anonymous)
It would be nice if you'd be more tolerant if she's just coming to shop...
"I thought a dangerous, sword-wielding youkai had come, but she looks sort of powerless, and I can't help feeling sorry for her, somehow." (Anonymous)
Her appearance is that of a young girl.
Countermeasures
Although she is a phantom, half of her is human.
It's possible to come to mutual understanding with her, so conflict can be avoided through discussion.
Unlike other youkai, she doesn't assault humans without a purpose, such as food or boredom.
If you don't challenge, provoke or put her in a blatantly disadvantageous situation, she will likely not attack you.
Even if the situation looks threatening, she will not fight anyone lacking in training, so that will at least make her go easy on you.
If you've done nothing wrong, you can probably talk your way out of a battle.
Even if you've clearly done something wrong, things might work out somehow if you offer a proper apology.
Now, what should one do in the unlikely event of being attacked by her?
All normal humans can hope to do in such a circumstance is offer a prayer to Buddha(*6).
*1: This word is read Hakugyokurou, not Shiratamarou.
*2: This world, as opposed to the next world.
*3: In the era of the 9th child of Miare, Akyuu.
*4: Normally they are sent to nirvana or disappear.
*5: Supposedly the things it cannot cut are next to none.
*6: Namo amithaba Buddhaya

Aragaki, the lone wolf who sticks out like a sore thumb at nightly meetings, is from the same orphanage as Sanada. Three years ago, Aragaki was a member of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad, where Sanada awakened the power of Persona within him. However, he wasn't able to fully control his powers. One day, a horrible accident occurred and a number of people were driven mad. Aragaki's Persona went berserk and snatched away the life of an innocent bystander. Despondent, Aragaki dropped out of school and began aimlessly roaming the streets at night. In order to restrain his Persona ability, whenever Aragaki is faced with danger, he takes a suppressant drug - although it has its side effects. Aragaki only returned to the SEES to bear his past deeds. Aragaki gave his life as a final apology to those tied to the past and unable to move forward, saying: "I'm the only one who deserves to rot in hell."

People are taking my return to the SEES really nicely... What the hell happened. Back when it was just me and Aki and Kirijo, the lounge felt way too big... But with all the new members, it's stuffed. Girls, a little kid, and even a dog... Some real variety in this lineup. Did Aki and Kirijo just get swept up in all that?
And on top of that, they're all treating me real good, even though they barely know me. The 2nd years think I bailed their asses out at the meeting place, when really I was just chasing off some pests. Either way, they're being real nice to me.
I don't bother with school or club activities or whatever, so I can focus all my energy on battle. Hit me up whenever you're heading off to Tartarus. I mean, that's why I came back here in the first place.

Koromaru-san reports that you often give him treats. It seems you two have become fast friends. Aragaki-san, you are rather reserved.

Oh come on, are you guys really kicking things off with a bunch of embarrassing comments? Hundred-man army, good guy... Don't just make stuff up about me. Ugh, I dunno how to deal with this.

Escapade
Category: Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad 2009/9/6 (Sun) 21:55
Under the full moon, a Shadow appeared, as promised. I hang out at Escapade plenty, but this time everyone on the floor was complaining about the power being on the fritz. I guess that was an omen or something that a Shadow was about to appear. Can't let things like that slip you by.
But man, there were some real annoying tagalongs last night. Junpei thought he was gonna party his ass off, the poor guy. That chick from Strega was totally stringing him along, but Junpei still managed to be worried about her. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but pure-hearted guys like him are the ones that fall for that kind of thing.
But still, the chick's Persona was really something... Might be worth worrying about. I think I'll pop my head into the hospital too.

I mean, Junpei's so unsubtle about things like this... I bet he's going to visit at the hospital again today. Maybe if Junpei keeps talking to her, Chidori-san will start to open her heart... Or maybe I'm naive for even thinking that?

Man, you guys are a real pain. Though I guess I can't be so quick to judge if Koro-chan hangs with you...
⬤ Questions From Persona Users ⬤
1. How did it feel when your Persona awakened?
I don't remember anything from back then...
2. What did you think when you saw your Persona?
Don't really care, that's just how he looks. He's Aki's Persona's brother. I mean, me and Aki go way back. You couldn't separate us even if you tried.
3. What's your favorite attacking strategy?
I'm not a big fan of whittling enemies down bit by bit. Better to give 'em one big hit and knock 'em dead, all in one go.
4. Any Shadows you have trouble with?
I don't got any weak points. I mean, if your Persona is weak, that just means your heart is weak.
5. What do you want to do when we're done fighting?
Hell if I know. I just want to take responsibility for what I've done. I think I'm just about there. After that... Aki, it's your turn.

What Are You Weirdos, a Cosplay Group?
Category: Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad 2009/9/16 (Wed) 22:58
Come on... I am not gonna participate in your little cosplay thing. The bus stop was one thing, but this time you want me to wear a tailcoat? What? Is that a butler costume? Like I'm gonna play some servant role.
Oh, and when we're going off to Tartarus, don't expect me to act like we're going on a picnic, or whatever. When a Shadow pops out, I want to look like a grown-up warrior. We didn't get this far by being stylish.
I mean, if you're fighting to win, then I'll quit whining. Just don't mess around too much. And don't forget that lives are on the line.

2009/9/17 (Fri) 19:29 Aki
I've never brought this up, but... Junpei, what do YOU look like with your hat off? I mean, even when you went swimming at the beach, you refused to take it off.

Haven't Seen a Movie In Ages
Category: Posts 2009/9/23 (Wed) 22:26
Man, I haven't been to the movies in ages. It's a lot nicer to go on your own, but... Well, if you're inviting me, you must be kind of a weirdo. I guess I don't mind coming along though, kills some time.
But like, did you pick that movie on purpose? "Woof-Meow Kingdom"... We were surrounded by family, made me weirdly sweaty. And the climactic scene where they got dragged in the river... That was... Well, whatever...
Right, I need to give Koro-chan the special dog food and assorted bones I got on the way home. The leash we use on walks is filthy, so maybe I should get a new one, too... Oh, and I'm going to give him a bath later tonight. Shoot, I forgot to get a massage brush...
Anyway, do you think Koro-chan's good at doggy paddling? Never know when something bad might happen around water...

Evening Walk

You guys keep going off about how taking a walk at night soothes the soul, and I kinda have to agree. I used to kill time at night by hanging out in back alleys or clubs, but I guess it's not so bad doing something more healthy with my evenings. And this is so weird, but taking a nice walk makes me want to make dinner for Koro-chan.
It's fall and everything's being harvested, which makes it the season for eating. You guys need to remember to eat up and stay healthy. Or else you're gonna end up bedridden, like our leader was. What would you even do if a shadow popped out then? Well, I guess everything's going good on that front, so it's fine for now. Just remember to get a nice square meal in every day.

The Trick to Cooking
Category: Cooking 2009/9/27 (Sun) 23:47
Fall's the season for eating, but I don't think that fancy kitchen we have is getting any use. The fridge is full of sports drinks and milk, the cupboards are crammed with protein shakes and cup noodles and junk food... It's messed up. Do you people seriously never cook? We didn't even have a good set of utensils, so I brought some in. Yamagishi's the only one who seems excited about cooking, but she doesn't have the basics down yet. Don't get me wrong, enthusiasm's great, but...
Well, if you've heard someone say that cooking is an act of love, it probably came from someone who's mastered their basics. Doesn't matter how much love you pour into your cooking, if you mess up some fundamental part, it's not gonna taste good. A super common mistake beginners make is ignoring what the recipe says and improvising instead. Get your basics down pat, then you can switch things up. Remember, you don't gotta rush it. Doesn't matter what you're doing, taking it one step at a time is key.

Aragaki, I'm rather surprised at how good you are at cooking. I wouldn't say you surpass my family's professional chef, but your food was indeed exquisite. Perhaps eating together with everyone isn't so bad, every once in a while.

So tomorrow's the long-awaited full moon, huh. And you know another huge Shadow's gonna pop out. But I never thought the full moon would fall on tomorrow's date, of all days... I can't bring myself to call it a coincidence.
It's not like I think I won't be coming back, but with what I have in the palm of my hand... Well, I can't tell if it's a coincidence or a cruel prank. And the whole time I sit here agonizing about it, the pocketwatch in my palm keeps on ticking. If I had to name the one thing I can never change, it'd be my past self. Who's bound by their past now? It's not just me... So, the only thing left for me to do is to make things right. Because no matter what I choose, I don't got much time left...
I'm not gonna write anything more here, I promise. You don't have to forgive me for my selfishness. And no matter what happens, don't you dare cry...

If You Get Into A Relationship...
Social links with Aragaki don't turn romantic until you max out your S. Link rank with him. But once you do get to max, if you call him one more time, you can have the protagonist confess to him. After a short period of heated questioning, you can enter Aragaki's room. Acting much unlike the Aragaki you've seen so far, he will embrace the protagonist and make an unexpectedly bold move. While it's quite the mushy event, if you do get in a relationship, he'll actually be quite assertive. By the way, the protagonist confesses to him in the dorm lounge. If you think about it, Yukari and Junpei and all the other members would be right next to them the whole time...

Death Toll in West Texas Shooting Climbs to 7

ODESSA, Tex. — The death toll from a shooting spree Saturday afternoon in the West Texas cities of Midland and Odessa increased overnight from five to seven, as investigators continued to piece together the bizarre and violent chain of events that had led a gunman to open fire on motorists and officers while driving on highways and alongside shopping centers.
Devin Sanchez, a spokesman for the City of Odessa, said seven people had been killed, in addition to the gunman. At least 21 others were wounded, including three law enforcement officers and a 17-month-old toddler who remained in serious condition Sunday morning.
[Read more about how the Odessa shooting unfolded.]
The gunman has not been identified, but authorities described him as a man in his mid-30s who fled from state troopers who had tried to pull him over. The gunman then hijacked a United States postal van and indiscriminately fired from a rifle at people before the authorities shot and killed him outside a movie theater in Odessa.
The attack on Saturday spread panic and fear for hours across West Texas, hundreds of miles from the border city of El Paso, where just 28 days earlier a gunman had killed 22 people at a Walmart in an anti-Hispanic attack. The motive behind Saturday’s shooting remained unclear.
Local and state officials said the shooting began with an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 20, a busy artery connecting Midland to Odessa.
At 3:13 p.m. Saturday, state troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety tried to pull over a man driving a gold car for failing to signal a left turn, the authorities said. The car was headed west and was near the Midland airport. Before it came to a complete stop, the driver pointed a rifle toward the rear window and fired several shots at the state troopers, injuring one, the Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
The gunman then drove west toward Odessa, shooting a person as he sped away on I-20 and east Loop 338.
He then began what officials called a shooting spree in Odessa. At some point, the gunman hijacked a postal van in Odessa and drove to the Cinergy movie theater on Highway 191. He shot an Odessa police officer and a Midland police officer. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect, the authorities said.
Cellphone video from witnesses captured the final moments of the attack on the back side of the movie theater.
The videos show police vehicles appearing to block a street outside the theater, around the corner from the entrances and in front of the building’s barren and beige side walls. The postal van speeds into view and the driver turns the van so its side slams into a police cruiser. A burst of gunfire follows as officers who have been chasing the van rush out of their vehicles to shoot at the gunman, who appears to remain inside the van.
On Sunday morning, the white postal van and the Odessa police vehicle remained in the same spot where the shooting had ended. Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were among the officers examining the crime scene on Sunday.
More than a dozen people were being treated at hospitals Saturday and Sunday. The wounded state trooper was in serious but stable condition, and the two officers were in stable condition, the authorities said.
The injured Midland officer, Zack Owens, was shot several times in an arm and hand, but relatives said his most serious injury had resulted from having glass shards in one eye.
Officer Owens’ brother, Jake Owens, is also an officer with the Midland Police Department. Abigail McCullough, the wife of Mr. Owens’ cousin, set up a donation page on GoFundMe, a crowdfunding site, to help pay the medical expenses for Zack Owens. By Sunday, more than $47,000 had been raised.
The 17-month-old girl who was shot was identified by family friends as Anderson Davis. A GoFundMe page for Anderson said the toddler had been wounded by a bullet fragment. The page was created by Haylee Wilkerson, a friend of Anderson’s mother, and had raised more than $119,000 by Sunday morning.
A note from Anderson’s mother on the page said her daughter was alive, which was “a prayer answered bigger than I’ve ever had to pray.” Her mother wrote that Anderson’s vitals were good and that she had shrapnel in her chest, her front teeth had been knocked out, and she had a hole through her bottom lip and tongue.
Residents in Odessa, a city of 120,000, remained on edge Sunday. Though Odessa and El Paso are separated by nearly 300 miles, the cities share some ties and a Western sensibility.
On Saturday night, at the University of Texas Permian Basin in Odessa, Stephanie Stonecliffe watched as her children played with rocks. She said her friend had been shopping at the Walmart in El Paso when the gunman there opened fire.
“Eventually I knew it was going to happen closer to home, especially with what’s going on in the world,” said Ms. Stonecliffe, who moved to the area recently from College Station, Tex. “This just tells me the world’s getting a little bit more dangerous.”
53 People Died in Mass Shootings in August Alone in the U.S.
So far this year, there have been at least 38 shootings with three or more fatalities, data shows.
By Neil Vigdor | Published August 31, 2019 Updated Sept. 1, 2019, 12:11 p.m. ET | New York Times | Posted September 1, 2019 12:55 PM ET |
The month of August ended as it began: with a shooting rampage and a significant death toll.
Seven people were killed near Odessa, Tex., on Saturday as a gunman started shooting indiscriminately at cars, bringing the number of victims of mass killings by firearms to 53 for the month. The authorities on Sunday revised the death toll from the shooting in Odessa to seven from five, excluding the gunman.
The term mass killings is defined by the Justice Department as three or more killings in a single episode, excluding the death of a gunman. There is no legal definition for the term mass shooting, despite its frequent use by gun control groups and the news media.
This month’s loss of life was most acute in Texas, where four of the eight deadliest shootings occurred, including an Aug. 3 massacre at a Walmart in El Paso that killed 22 people.
The spate of gun violence has left the country on edge and catalyzed a more intense debate over gun control.
The carnage in West Texas on Saturday was the 38th mass killing by firearms in the United States this year.
Here are some of the deadliest shootings so far in 2019 based on figures from the website Mass Shooting Tracker and local news media accounts. The death tolls do not include the people who carried out the attacks, and not every episode of 2019 is listed.
AUG. 4 — 9 KILLED
Dayton, Ohio
Nine people were killed and 27 others were wounded after a gunman wearing a mask and body armor opened fire in a busy entertainment district. The gunman’s sister was among the dead, according to the police.
AUG. 3 — 22 KILLED
El Paso
Twenty-two people were killed and 26 others wounded in a shooting that targeted shoppers in a Walmart store in El Paso, a predominantly Hispanic border city. The suspect, a white man in his 20s who was taken into custody, wrote an anti-immigrant manifesto that was posted online shortly before the attack, the authorities said.
JULY 28 — 3 KILLED
Gilroy, Calif.
An annual garlic festival in an agricultural community south of San Jose turned deadly when a 19-year-old man opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle that he had bought legally in Nevada. The gunman killed himself in the attack. The victims included a 13-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy.
JULY 6 — 5 FOUND DEAD
St. Louis County, Mo.
The bodies of five men who had been fatally shot were discovered in an apartment building by police officers in north St. Louis County, according to The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The victims ranged in age from 37 to 65. Two men were arrested in the killings, which the police said were connected to “drug activity,” The Post-Dispatch reported.
JUNE 8 — 5 KILLED
White Swan, Wash.
Five members of the Yakama Nation were killed in White Swan, a remote community on the Yakama Indian Reservation in central Washington State. Four people were arrested in the shootings, the latest act in a cycle of criminal activity on the reservation, which is between the Cascade mountains and the Columbia River. Two of the men charged in the killings took a child hostage at gunpoint, the authorities said.
MAY 31 — 12 KILLED
Virginia Beach, Va.
A city engineer quit his job and then went on a shooting rampage at Building No. 2 of the Virginia Beach Municipal Center. The gunman, a former soldier, was armed with two handguns and a cache of ammunition as he targeted his former co-workers in offices and hallways, according to the authorities. His victims were civil servants in the public works and public utilities departments and a contractor who was at the offices to discuss a permit.
FEB. 15 — 5 KILLED
Aurora, Ill.
A disgruntled employee who had been fired from his job returned to a suburban Chicago factory with a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun with a laser sight, which the authorities said he used to kill five of his former co-workers. The gunman was not supposed to have a weapon, as his gun permit had been revoked a year earlier because of a felony assault conviction. The victims included an intern who was on his first day of work and a grandfather of eight.
JAN. 23 — 5 KILLED
Sebring, Fla.
Five women were fatally shot while they were lying on the ground in a SunTrust Bank branch by a 21-year-old man, who called an emergency dispatcher and said, “I have shot five people.” The suspect, who was charged with five counts of first-degree premeditated murder, was wearing a T-shirt that bore the image of four scythe-wielding grim reapers on horseback.

"Gaëtan Dugas loved to fly. Adopted by a large family in the Quebec City suburb of L’Ancienne-Lorette, he grew up next to the airport, watching planes take off and wishing he were on board. He trained as a hairdresser, but once airlines lifted the ban on men doing the work of “stewardesses,” he found his dream job. He became one of Air Canada’s new cohort of male flight attendants.
It was 1974. Dugas was a wildly handsome, flamboyant and utterly promiscuous 22-year-old surfing a jet stream of sexual liberation. It was an era when flying was still glamorous, people smoked on planes and the horizon of casual, carefree sex appeared limitless. With a bleached-blond coif and the pants and shirt of his uniform re-tailored to be skin-tight, Dugas wore his gay pride to work. He shared makeup tips with his female colleagues and competed with them to pick up the hottest male passengers. By the end of the decade, the Air Canada flight attendant with the cute French accent and men in every port was a minor legend, known from the airline crew lounge to the bathhouses of New York and Los Angeles.
In 1980, he was diagnosed with Kaposi’s sarcoma, a previously rare skin cancer that would become the mark of AIDS. In the LGBTQ community then, it was known as the mysterious “gay cancer,” with no indication it was contagious. Two years later, Dugas was living in New York and undergoing chemotherapy when Bill Darrow, an investigator for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), interviewed him about his sexual activity for a cluster study of men afflicted by AIDS. Dugas was extremely co-operative. Estimating he’d had some 750 sexual partners in the previous three years, he gave Darrow a list of 72 contacts from his address book and became Patient 57 in a CDC study of linked cases. Released in March 1984, the same month that Dugas died of AIDS, Darrow’s study planted the seed that would lead the media to falsely demonize Dugas as Patient Zero, arch-villain of an epidemic that would eventually kill more than 700,000 people in North America.
And it all began with a typo.
When Darrow published his report, Patient 57 was renamed Patient O, with the letter “O” standing for “Out-of-California.” Somewhere along the paper trail, the “O” got confused with a zero. Adding to the confusion was the fact that Dugas was the study’s “original” patient, placed at the centre of the cluster diagram, between patients from L.A. and New York. Darrow stressed that there was no evidence that Dugas had infected the others—never mind that he’d introduced AIDS to North America as Patient Zero. But that was the sensational claim made in 1987 by San Francisco journalist Randy Shilts in his bestseller about the AIDS epidemic, And the Band Played On. Cementing Dugas’ legacy as a monstrous degenerate, the book provoked a spate of lurid headlines, and later a cheesy HBO mini-series. It was a textbook case of “fake news” that “went viral” before either term was even coined.
In 2016, scientists debunked the Patient Zero myth with a conclusive study of blood samples that showed Dugas’ virus was unrelated to others in his cluster. By then, it had been established that the HIV/AIDS virus, which likely originated with African primates, had been circulating in North America since at least 1970, and that its incubation period was three or four times longer than the one or two years between sexual contact and illness in the CDC cluster.
Now, Killing Patient Zero—a powerful documentary by Canadian filmmaker Laurie Lynd that premieres at Toronto’s Hot Docs festival this month—sets out to clear Dugas’ reputation once and for all, while challenging the urban legend that he was a sexual predator who deliberately infected his lovers.
Based on Richard A. McKay’s landmark book, Patient Zero and the Making of the AIDS Epidemic(2017), the film features 38 interviews with friends and colleagues of Dugas and Shilts, as well as doctors, scientists and gay men and women who lived through the epidemic, notably the sardonic Fran Lebowitz. They include Darrow, who laments how his study was skewed, and Michael Denneny, Shilts’ editor and publisher, who takes the blame for igniting the Patient Zero hysteria with a shameless publicity ploy to sell And the Band Played On.
Denneny recalls a PR woman coming into his office in tears on a Friday afternoon, saying no one wanted to cover the book. “I panicked and called up an ex-boyfriend who happened to be a publicist,” he says. “He suggested the following, which I thought was extraordinarily clever. The story of Patient Zero is only mentioned in 11 pages. He said, ‘You pull this material out and present it to the New York Post, a miserably homophobic newspaper. This story has everything you want. It has beauty, it has depth, he’s an airline steward and, best of all, a foreigner. They’re going to eat it up.’ ”
Shilts hated the idea, calling it yellow journalism. But Denneny eventually talked him into it, arguing it was the key to getting his groundbreaking work about AIDS onto the national agenda in a Reagan era of deep denial. The Post broke the story with the headline, “The man who gave us AIDS.” And the New York Times, which had refused to review the book, would publish 11 articles on it over several weeks. Dugas’ family, horrified to see Gaëtan so cruelly exploited, refused to co-operate when 60 Minutes came looking for interviews. They’ve stayed out of the media ever since.
What’s remarkable is that the prime movers of the Patient Zero myth were all gay and progressive—the publisher, the publicist and Shilts, who died of AIDS in 1994. It wasn’t just the straight world that craved a scapegoat. And two decades before he made Killing Patient Zero, Lynd admits that Shilts’ book had a huge impact on him as a young gay man. “It woke me up,” he told Maclean’s. “I was living in New York and had blinders on—I was so lucky I didn’t get AIDS—and I bought into the whole Patient Zero thing.”
His filmmaker friend John Greyson was more circumspect, however—he had the prescience to puncture the myth with his surreal musical satire, Zero Patience, a small Canadian film that premiered the same week in 1993 as Philadelphia, the AIDS drama starring Tom Hanks.
Greyson, among other subjects in Lynd’s film, points out that Dugas’ promiscuity wasn’t as freakish as it sounds in the context of the times. Between rising up against persecution in the Stonewall riots at the end of the ’60s and being decimated by AIDS in the ’80s, the 1970s represented a brief window of delirious freedom for the gay community. “We thought that sex was good for you,” says Lebowitz, marvelling at the male capacity for racking up anonymous encounters. “New York was an orgy. To me, it seemed you couldn’t possibly have sex with so many people.” Putting things in perspective, Denneny says, “If you scored two nights a week, that meant you didn’t score five nights a week, so you felt frustrated.”
No one disputes that Dugas was an overachiever and may have played an unwitting role in spreading the AIDS virus. But the most sinister accusation was that he did so with psychopathic intent, as a kind of “Typhoid Mary.” In interviews, Shilts went so far as to compare him to Jack the Ripper and serial killer Richard Speck. Lynd, who suspects Shilts was tortured by “internalized homophobia,” tries to undo the damage through testimony from those who knew Dugas as a kind, generous soul who was singled out only because he was such a co-operative patient. Like many early AIDS victims, Dugas persisted in having sex during his illness because there was no proof that it was sexually transmitted. But because his co-operation helped prove that it was, Greyson sees him as a hero, and as a gay man boldly immune from guilt and shame who “epitomized a politic of deep pleasure.”
A fellow flight attendant, Elaine Watson, remembers Dugas as someone who was “ahead of his time—he was who he was; he didn’t pretend to be straight, he didn’t pretend to be anything.” Another close colleague, Gaetane Urevig, has fond memories of a joyful soulmate who used to tell her, “One day, I’ll be a star.” Gaëtan Dugas didn’t live long enough to find out the sad consequences of his idle prophecy. But, as his legacy finds a warmer spotlight, he may have finally scored some long-overdue redemption.
