it has hit me that post-4x14, everyone was writing about eddie tearing buck a new one when he found out that buck went up a crane without proper protection and did it without being cleared to go up there.
but that was still a hypothetical. IF eddie found out, about a rescue that had nothing to do with him.
stakes are different this time around.
we could get a very real scene where buck finds out that eddie climbed that ladder up after him. we could see him freaking out, we could see him angry, grateful, but hurt and angry because lbr it is stupidity to send ANYONE up a ladder in that storm, but to have one more person go up after one has already been hit? We all know what that is
but it’s also a full circle moment again because eddie’s got his back, and he’s proving it over and over, and buck’s not expendable, and eddie’s gonna make him see that even if it kills him, clearly, and i dunno it’s 2am i’m having feelings

Buck & Eddie: Buck is looking for answers!
Tumblr media
Before 6x15 aired, I wrote a speculation post about Buck's "Therapy Uniform vs. his date clothes" (linked here) but everyone knows how the season ended with the showrunner pulling that BS by having Eddie revert back to being a giggly high school student who acted like an 18-year-old that didn't know how to ask a woman out on a date. And Buck literally made the same mistake by sleeping with a woman he just met who only wanted one thing from him but I digress. It still pisses me off, so I won't revisit it.
Also, I did a post after 6x13 aired (linked here) about Buck finding the answers (Eddie and Chris) because when he said he was the guy with the answers, he looked at Eddie.
Tumblr media
Anyway, after TM (showrunner, GLAD HE'S BACK so KR can kick rocks and go write an episode) released more cryptic Buck, Eddie and Chris pictures at dark o'clock Saturday night or Sunday morning (depending on your time zone), I revisited my theory about Buck's therapy uniform but now I've revised it. He does wear one but the reason he does is a lot narrower in scope. Even though I still believe he wears specific colors or a "uniform" per say for certain things, I realized after doing some analysis that whenever he wears a Gold/Bronze/Burnt Orange/Dark Orange or a Brown shirt with navy-blue or dark colored pants, he's LOOKING FOR ANSWERS!
That's the difference between my original post and this one and I have photos from each episode to prove my updated theory. Before I delve into this, I need to mention there are two pictures from season 6 that contain the colors but BE WARNED, the pictures included deal specifically with the COUCH METAPHOR 🙄🙃. I know, I know... the season ended with Buck asking ND to help him find a couch but full disclosure, after I started working through my frustration with the way the season ended by writing a huge fanfic, I took a closer look at their whatever the hell they were doing (it wasn't a relationship) and I don't think it was meant to be interpreted that way. I won't go into it here in my CANON posts but if you want to know my thoughts on it, I've included them in my love for FANON writing in my multi-chapter fanfic titled "I'm still in love with you but... I needed to learn how to love myself too!".
Now, let's get into this topic and review Buck's looking for answers uniform.
In 4x2, Buck was looking for ANSWERS from Dr. Copeland and he said, "I think you were right when you said I hide my true feelings from others".
Tumblr media
In 4x3 Buck told Maddie and Chimney he was seeing a therapist to help him find the ANSWERS and he started to find them but then everything went to $hit when the Buckley parents showed up.
Tumblr media
In 4x4, Buck showed up at Maddie's and Chimney's apartment looking for ANSWERS about his parents and that's when he found out about Daniel.
Tumblr media
In 4x8, Buck was lost and trying to find ANSWERS because guess who started dating again? EDDIE! And he was getting ready to introduce AF to Chris but Chris got upset and ran away and took an Uber to Buck's loft.
Tumblr media
In 4x11, Buck and TK were FRIENEMIES (not friends even though he believed they were) so he contacted her and asked her for help because he wanted to find the ANSWERS regarding who hit Sue Blevins and ran.
Tumblr media
In 4x14, Buck wore his "looking for ANSWERS" uniform twice and BOTH TIMES his quest involved Eddie! The first time was when he was packing more clothes to go to Eddie's house so he could keep taking care of Chris. That's when he got the call from AF after TK kissed him and ran so I've included two pictures so his shirt can be seen better while he's sitting at Eddie's beside. He was looking for answers about Eddie being shot in front of him and his heart being ripped out of his chest when it happened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second time he was looking for ANSWERS, he was in the hospital talking to Eddie during THE WILL REVEAL! 🤪😜
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 5x3, Buck was once again looking for ANSWERS about his relationship but reminder, he went home to an empty loft after he told Eddie during the blackout to break up with AF🤪.
Tumblr media
In 5x4, he was looking for ANSWERS about Maddie and why she left him again even though she promised him she wouldn't in 3x16. Did she tell him she was leaving, YES! But reminder, she didn't tell him where she was going and all he told Chimney was "It's what she does, leave".
Tumblr media
In 6x1, at the end of the episode, Buck was looking for ANSWERS again but this time it was about his couch or the lack thereof. At the beginning of the episode, he cooked dinner for him and his Diaz boys and they made fun of him for not having one even though THEY WERE SITTING RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF HIM. He missed the fact that they were waiting for him and had been since he broke up with TK and he still didn't get it. The picture shows Buck carrying his armchair (which is the same color of the shirt he wears when he's looking for answers) and he moved it to where his couch once sat.
Tumblr media
In 6x4, Buck was looking for ANSWERS again when he was trying to decide if he should be Connor's sperm donor.
Tumblr media
In 6x12, Buck was lying on the couch looking for ANSWERS about his death but reminder, the color of the couch is close to the color of his armchair but it's hard to see. He's wearing a navy-blue t-shirt while lying on that uncomfortable orange couch his mother bought even though he told her HE'D FIND ONE ON HIS OWN.
Tumblr media
In 6x15, Buck was looking for ANSWERS about the fact that he died but ND was fangirling over him so hard that he LIKED the attention she was giving him then he said that Bull$hit to Eddie about her seeing him and Buck and Eddie went back to making the same mistakes. Eddie let people (**cough** Pepa and **cough** Bobby) tell him he should date instead of finding his own way. And Buck tried to make another woman like him when in fact all she wanted was his "Firehose".
Tumblr media
In 6x17, he was still looking for ANSWERS but this time it was answers regarding how to calculate the tip at the bar he took ND to and that's when LD showed up and insinuated, they hooked up when she knows they didn't. Reminder, Buck could only do math when he was with Eddie and Chris and the firefam but he couldn't calculate $hit when he was on a date with ND🤪🙃😁😉.
Tumblr media
Finally, in Season 7 (TM didn't specify which episode the scene below will appear in his cryptic post), Buck's wearing his LOOKING FOR ANSWERS colored shirt again. The color pants he's wearing while he sits on Chris' bed can't be seen but based on 6x13 when Chris wanted Buck to give him the answers to his math homework and since Chris is clearly doing homework in the picture, it's possible he's asking Buck to help him but he doesn't have the answers anymore because his special skills wore off after 6x13 which just so happened to be the episode the Buckley-Diaz family was together 90% of the time.
Tumblr media
What, if anything, does all this mean? I'm not speculating but will Buck finally find the answers in Season 7 or will it be more of the same, him looking for answers while Eddie tries to make another relationship work with someone he doesn't want to be with or will Buck and Eddie finally TALK about all their traumas and confess how much they love each other? Only TM, the producers and the actors know the answers to that question.

someone should break down that final scene because it's so loud in it's intent and also symbolizing that tommy is here to play a plot device not only in buck's character evolution but buddie's relationship as well and ultimately in the end as indicated at the end of the scene buck is going go after eddie.
I truly think we may get a buddie canon confirmation by the end of the season honestly.
So far nothing we've seen has dissuaded me from Bi Buck and canon Buddie happening eventually.
This scene firmly establishes that Buck is friendly with Tommy now. Enough for them to be "casually" touching each other.
If Bucktommy do happen then this scene informs multiple things, including that queer men often (let's not forget TK in the lonestar crossover) perceive Buck's actions towards them as sexual/romantic interest. If that's the case, then this kind of casual shoulder touch (that we often see Buck and Eddie exchange) is then cast into a different romantic queer light. This then signals that we should be looking back at the times Buck and Eddie have been doing this with each other and question whether it was really as platonic as both of them might have perceived at the time. Which is even MORE interesting since it seems like Eddie's doing this shoulder touch MULTIPLE times to Buck this season?
This kind of small setup of Buck and Tommy being friendly could also inform how the basketball scene in 7x04 comes about. There's a possibility for jealousy from both Buck and Eddie. If Tommy perceives Buck to be queer then he might be a LOT more forward with his intentions than we've seen any other man be on the show. TK just said "thanks, but I have a bf", but if Tommy is single, he could instead hit on him much more forwardly a la Taylor Kelly. And if he does so IN FRONT OF EDDIE??? GWORLIES, we're in for it.
For me, at this point in time, I'm less so focused on the intentions of the writers (until we get more info) and more so focused on the IMPLICATIONS. Because even if Buck and Eddie don't get together for like 2 more seasons or something, all of this with queer Buck will ABSOLUTELY recontextualize everything he's built with Eddie so far, in a similar vein to the will scene in 4x14.
And yes, I firmly believe we will get a strong hint of eventual buddie endgame by the end of the season. Honestly, even if it's just bi buck, I would be convinced, but I also think we'll get something else specifically about Buddie by the end of the season. Maybe an Eddie realization? I'd be down for Buck realizing his sexuality first but Eddie realizing his romantic feelings for Buck first.

Do you have any clue how big the fandom actually is nowadays? Back when I started watching the show after s4, I'd never heard or seen anything about it before (besides the maybe 3 gifs that made me start watching) and I've been on tumblr for years. But these days it seems like everyone and their mother knows about "the gay firefighter show" or "the fans of that stupid cop show" (lol) and it's trending every week. It's like we now have a reputation as a big annoying fandom. Did the show really get so hugely more popular since 2021? Or is it just because I'm in a different corner of tumblr now? And did we really get louder/more annoying?
honestly i have no idea, but that’s a really interesting question!
i also joined the fandom right after s4 (caught up just in time to watch 4x14 live lmfao that was a time) and before that i’d never even heard of it, but i was also on tumblr hiatus at the time, so i don’t really have any data on how visible it would have been.
i don’t really know how to best estimate the size of the fandom tbh? like if you look at the most popular posts/gifsets that blow up right after an episode airs, they tend to max out around a couple of thousand notes. then there’s ao3, which doesn’t actually accurately represent anything but i’m checking anyway—in march 2023, as of just now, the fic with the most hits has just shy of 9k. this is only counting complete, single-chapter fics, since multichaptered ones mess with the hit counts. (there’s also 828 complete works posted in that timeframe, but idk how many of them are completing ones that were started earlier).
hit counts are obviously not a real metric for measuring fandom size, but maybe it gives some idea of the scale? idk

something that really bothers me about people in fandom (and honestly just in real life too because i see that’s hit all the fucking time) is how they’re always trying to compare trauma and play the “who has it worse” game with the characters. like one, stop comparing trauma it’s weird, but also two, stop trying to play the who has it worse game with different kinds of trauma ??
like we can sit here and argue about who has it worse in 4x14 of 9-1-1. eddie, the guy who got shot, or buck, the guy who’s eddie’s blood splattered all over. at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter because both of them were put in incredibly traumatizing situations. eddie has the trauma from being literally shot, being a target, and bleeding out on the street, not knowing if he’s going to live to get get back to his son no king after his son’s mother died. he had go through all that pain, but buck has the trauma of having his best friend’s blood splatter on his face, while feeling helpless as he bleeds out. and we know he feels guilty, and blames himself, thinking that it would have been better if it had been him. but these are two different kinds of trauma, it’s not something you can just weigh on a scale and hope to get an accurate measurement. it’s complex, and there’s so much nuance, depending on how each person handles and processes it, the person you’d expect to be least hurt might be more, or one just may be better at compartmentalizing than the other. it’s subjective to the individual.
like people are arguing over who had it worse when bianca died, percy or nico. and everyone’s trying to compare what they went through, but you can’t. because at the end of the day, the trauma nico has from losing a sibling and feeling betrayed by someone you trusted is going to be different from the survivor’s guilt and the trauma from the ultimate failure percy experiences. you can’t compare the two because they’re measured on completely different scales. trauma affects each individual differently, and something that might seem mundane to you can feel like drowning to someone else.
i don’t think we should be asking who’s the most and who’s the least traumatized because trauma is trauma. you experience something that changes who you are, something that changes the way your brain works and people expect you to stand in a line and rank you pain on a scale from 1-10, and then tell you that you’re overreacting or not reacting enough based on how they think you should feel. and it’s so weird, and really invalidating ??? anyway, that’s it. i just think people should stop being so insensitive about how they talk about trauma, real trauma and fictional trauma when analyzing characters in media. because a lot of the trauma fictional characters go through has probably happened in real life, in some shape or form. i think it’s strange.

I just want to tell you that I love you so much because we think the same in particular about b/t. I really hoped we'd have the same scenes a/e had, I wasn't prepared for this much. I mean I get it's important for buck, but why we have to see every second of this awful relationship? The ana/eddie breakup was wonderful and we felt all eddie's pain, but we didn't see episodes on episodes full of their scenes. Let's hope in 5x12 it'd be over
Awwwww thanks nonnie, that's so sweet! 🥺
I'm guessing this is about my tags on this post and yes I absolutely agree. I was also not prepared for the amount of screen time we were going to have to suffer through with bt. I was really trying to bite my tongue in season 4 about my feelings on her character and did my best to get behind their friendship because m/f friendships aren't seen as much as they should be, and it's not like she was around much.
But once 4x14 made it clear they were going the relationship route I was done. Buck wanting anything to do with her after 2x06 when he found out the truth that she fought to air that stuff about Bobby never made any sense for me, and made even LESS sense after all the awful thing she said to him earlier in the season. "Intimidated by strong women?" Ma'am, where?! When?! 🙄 but also "needy"? Right after the audience learned about Buck's childhood trauma? They haven't been subtle about her not sticking around or trying to get the audience to like her, so I'm just curious as to why we have had to see so much of her.
Like, we're not supposed to like her, she's not sticking around, so what the hell was Ghost Stories? In a year no one will care about an entire episode dedicated to a case that has nothing to do with, and almost entirely doesn't involve, the main cast or tie in with them and another case (like Athena's missing persons case and Sue's hit-and-run being the same thing). But a year later everyone would have still wanted to watch firefam shenanigans and the 5 cut scenes of the Ghost Roommate Call.
Same with Past Is Prologue, in a year when she's gone forever no one will care about her "backstory", and even that was still told and framed entirely from Buck's POV because this story isn't about her.
The show has made it abundantly clear, from the writing, directing, acting choices, framing, even the costumes and music, that bt are wrong for each other, but it's so hard to watch and we've had to suffer through so much of it! Buck is clearly miserable all the time, and when he's not actively looking miserable, he's clearly putting up a front. He hasn't been himself around her like, ever, and the only time he tried to open up, he got told that not everything is about him. I do think she was trying there, and wasn't actively being malicious or anything but she has canonically never once given a single fuck about anyone's emotional state but her own and how she's being affected by things so a) she doesn't know how to help Buck because b) she doesn't really know him at all and c) it's still more about her restoring what she thinks is the "balance" in their relationship where Buck goes back to being the version of himself she recognizes and wants to be with.
She's literally trying to force Buck out of the trap he's in, instead of climbing in with him like Bobby told Buck he needed to do with Abby in season 1 (and what Buck immediately applied to his relationships with Eddie and Maddie in season 2), which is...interesting to say the least. I wasn't really on board with the "Buck is Taylor's Abby" theory because Buck is still putting all the emotional labor into this relationship and doing all the supporting and heavy lifting just like he was with Abby, but the parallels just keep popping up and after 5x09 it's pretty clear that she's in a different place than he is in the relationship. Which, it isn't hard to see why since she's getting everything she wants/needs out of the relationship while not noticing that Buck isn't getting anything he truly wants/needs. Which is a compelling story for Buck's arc, and is going to provide growth for him! Yay! But also, as you said, they absolutely got the same kind of point across with Eddie and his relationship (that breakup was riveting to watch), but they managed it in sooooo much less screen time!
Let's just hope that big wrench arrives sooner rather than later in 5b because I can't take much more of Buck looking so lost and alone, and I absolutely cannot take ANY more of her being on my screen and taking time away from characters I actually care about and want to see. And also poor Oliver deserves a break from having to play Buck being lonely and miserable and not getting to work as much with such great scene partners like JLH and Kenneth Choi, and having less time with Ryan, Aisha, Peter, and Angela. I just want the firefam back together! I have a feeling though that 5b is going to deliver some great stuff.
Sorry this got long and ranty. I just have a lot of feelings, and I'm out of fucks to give 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for giving me a moment to vent, nonnie! Come back any time!

Station 19 rewatch: 4x14
Going to try to do another rewatch before my family wakes up. We have a lot to do today and there is a dark cloud over the house after loaing our cat this week. Here's hoping i can get through one of my favorite episodes before they get up.
Surrera is so cute here and the whole food thing, like girl where is our payoff on this baby that was so clearly teased. Or is there another medical condition that could be blamed on her excessive eating.
Im so glad maya and andy are friends again. I loge their friendship.
I'm glad andy acknowledges that getting married doesnt fix things; but i worry that if maya and carina hit a rough patch, andy will remind maya of this conversation or use her own issues with sullivan and their marriage as an i told you so.
Danielle is beautiful but does anyone else think she lost weight, random question but just looking at her in her uniform there she seems smaller and it worries me. Didnt really notice last time i watched this episode but am i alone in this.
Oh carina baby you so dont want to go. I just want to hug you.
Jack is so cute, he deserves a family so much but i really do fear he'll be killed off.
Im surprised ben reached out to Sullivan instead of dean.
I love this outfit on maya. Carina your girl is flirting with you and thinking of happier times, engage with her.
I love that maya opens up with carina about her dad and the protests and the happenings in the world with him. It shows so much growth and im here for it. Also anyone else annoyed that one carina answered gabriella's phone call when maya is opening up to her and two that she didnt turn it off for their last few hours together.
The look of like disappointment/devestation on maya's face when carina answers the call and walks away from her is too much hurt.
So sad that bailey isnt there and that ben is alone for even a second of this.
I'm glad andy and sullivan came to be there with ben. Like i get why they wanted andy but im sad after ben and Dean's episode dean wasnt there.
Oh jack, i dont even know what to say besides oh jack lol.
The drama with trash girl is too much lmao. I know its important for jack/inara but its just too much.
Carina packing up her knives being a trigger for maya like she's leaving forever is heartbreaking.
Carina snapping at maya hurts, dont be mean to baby. Also the kitchen sign is totally carina's doing and though she hadnt confided in maya yet that she is her home its a dead giveaway.
I really need screen grabs of the changing words on the sign.
The kids talk, the coming out talk and the marriage talk are all things that should not be done while packing or doing anything else.
Wait it totally sounded like she said "it felt pregnant" lmao or i just have babies on the brain.
Now carina being flirty and maya not reciprocating.
Maya you shouldve pushed the marriage talk now if it was what you really wanted. Instead of letting carina drop the i never wanted to get married bomb and walk away.
Andy and ben together, this friendship is beautiful. I feel like it took several seasons for ben to really get in good the team. Im trying to think of other moments besides the prt support and such when he really connected with folks before this season and none come to mind. He has been an outlier from my memory, tell me im wrong with examples please.
Lmao "you slept with my wife which means we are in a pod", things a pandemic makes funny.
Thats just wrong, giving gibson shit still. Dont hit the puppy with the newspaper when he's doing nothing wrong.
Once again with gabriella, seriously carina turn off your phone and be present with maya and maya alone.
Maya's jealousy is everything. This argument ugh, so good and just the tip of the iceberg.
I hope that maya does take the month break and the months after to really get to know the us immigration system and what it will take for carina to become an american citizen as well as learn more italian. I dont need her fluent but id love to see her use some italian with carina. She lost her brother who she spoke to in her native tongue itd be nice for her to gain that in her wife.
I love how carina stops herself as she raises her voice at maya, like she realizes it may be triggering to maya. I really do think the show and actresses put in a lot in this episode to show how well they know each other and have grown. I feel like they talk more even if we dont see it and maya is working on her issues with carina's love and support. I also do love how this argument ends though ;)
Once again maya opening up and finally carina is there and not sidetracked. And its nice carina opens up as well.
Ben's dream with the different versions of himself and his mom is funny and heartbreaking.
Joey in the dream lmao.
The nice thing about ben is if he gets hurt on the job and cant be a firefighter anymore he has other professions to fall back on.
Oh jack. I just want you to get your happy ending.
I still think its so weird to be talking about jack after they had sex but im glad they are in a place that is so comfortable and can laugh about him.
Once again another bomb dropped, kids. This is something that needs to be discussed properly.
Oh maya dont drop the marriage bomb like that. And i guess i dont underatand the outrage of the "just because", like why would carina think it was anything but that when it was dropped on her like that and after she said she didnt want to get married. This fight is so much about misunderstandings and hurtful comments.
I get how maya's fear gets the best of her here especially after carina said they just moved in together because they didnt want to be apart (asif that is a bad thing) and it was bureaucracy.
And i can understand why maya's fear hurts carina but they both needed to take a minute to breathe and try to talk it out.
I do like when carina tells maya to breathe, again like she knows her triggers and feels maya is on the verge of a panic attack.
If carina felt she married maya when she moved in i really dont see the harm in making it official. Would her having been moved out in italy for 6 months or more have felt like a divorce. I really need to know more about her logic here.
I agree why not just do it.
You've both said enough carina. I hate that she just walks away, so un carina like.
How did jack end up at the hospital? Was he called or what?
Andy is such a good friend this episode, checking on everyone.
Gabriella is so right noone wants to be proposed to the way maya kind of did. Like i cant help but wonder how carina would've taken a true proposal.
Im so glad gabriella spoke some truth to carina and turned her around on the marriage idea.
If we let the wrong decisionss rule how we live our lives things in the world would be so different. Less babies possibly and fewer marriages among other things.
Once again andy being a good friend this episode.
If carina hadnt shown up im curious what maya's next move wouldve been after talking to andy.
Love the proposal and love how its carina who announces they are getting married.

Quinntana anon here!! thanks so much for your response; one of the things that stuck out to me is when you mentioned they understand each other on such a deep level, bc I totally agree - and I personally don’t think Q & S would fully realize that until they’re out of Lima/McKinley and have had some time apart.
I often think back to that s3 moment when Mr Schue is singing goodbye to the seniors in the choir room and they look at each other before holding hands for the briefest of seconds. it’s like their way of acknowledging all of the shit they’ve gone through together while simultaneously acknowledging the love they have for each other. their relationship works in a way maybe only they understand, and that’s enough for them.
there was so much room for a juicy storyline between them post 4x14, both platonically and/or romantically. I know the fact Dianna wasn’t really around much by then most likely contributed to the lack of, but I can still whine and blame RIB (so I will 😝)
Hey Quinntana anon! I love how much you love these two, it really comes through from what you write. Please feel free to talk to me some more about Quinntana lol.
I vibe with what you say, I also think they needed time away from McKinley to realize how important they are to one another. Like I said I think they both take their bond for granted and that can be both good and bad. I think the high school environment and obsession with how people viewed them/social hierarchy hindered them both. Quinn a bit more so and I think she desperately needed to get out of there more than most, but it goes for both. So they need distance from that to realize what it is they have, exactly. In my experience getting out of that high school environment can drastically change dynamics and Quinntana deffo shift post-graduation.
I love your thoughts on the 3x22 moment. I think a lot of it is Naya and Dianna just really giving it their all but it is in the text so there's no reason we couldn't read into it. And I find that with Quinntana it's often in those quiet moments we find the truth, you know? Not the admittedly iconic hallway fight or even their hookup, just those small moments when they understand each other.
I'll take this opportunity to talk a bit about s4 Quinntana if you don't mind because oh boy. So correct me if I'm wrong but by my calculations, there is exactly one Quinn scene in season 4 that doesn't include Santana in some capacity - convo with Kitty and confronting the Puckermans. And there are no Quinn songs that don't also feature Santana, including her solo Come See About Me because it has Brittana on backing vocals. So that's crazy, isn't it? They really had Dianna come back as a guest star in season 4 and said "but only Naya scenes". And I love that for those two.
And narratively, where does that leave us? I think it means Quinn's season 4 arc is Quinntana. As much as she has an arc as a guest star anyway. And that really just hits different because the entire thing is this tension brewing but now that they're out of high school it's like, what is this leading up to? Because it isn't the Kitty and Marley thing. Even in Naked, they're in NY for Rachel but can't stop with the remarks. And then in 4x14 we of course find out what it's been leading up to.
I think you absolutely can blame RIB because fine, Dianna wasn't available for the rest of season 4. But then to have Quinn's season 5 scenes revolve around Puck, of all people? What a downgrade. Of course, we had Brittana running in parallel with that but how about we make it the Unholy Trinity and not just for the length of that Toxic performance (which is another topic in and of itself). How about we focus on the girls all seeing each other after a long time. And in parallel to Santana seeing that there's something off with Brittany, she sees it on Quinn, too. Quinn, who's been running through the same cycles with men she doesn't love and the non-wedding seemed like some sort of breakthrough. But now she's back with another boy she only likes the idea of. And here's Santana, seeing both of her best friends lose themselves pretending to be someone they're not while she's also busy destroying her friendship with Rachel for the sake of a dream she doesn't actually want.
I mean, it writes itself. But the writers really said, no Unholy Trinity, we just need them to be sexy. It will never not bother me that Quinntana never had a one-on-one or really any scene after the hookup. You know what it was, RIB being cowards because they were too powerful.

I always thought it was odd that we never saw Eddie picking Christopher up from Buck's after he ran away or even another conversation between Christopher and Eddie and instead we launch into him seeing it's Ana that Eddie is dating.
But then I realized, the whole point of Eddie and Ana's relationship (or at least what came under the microscope at the end of season 4) was that Eddie and Christopher were synonymous and Eddie was trying to create a complete family for Christopher.
So when Christopher ran away, we get this scene (once Eddie picks up Buck's call and finds out he's okay):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then it hit me. Holy shit. This was the resolution Christopher needed, the reassurance, not from Eddie or even Ana herself. Christopher literally went to his other dad seeking the reassurance and comfort he needed, that there would be one person (besides Eddie) that wasn't going anywhere. And this is what makes it okay for Christopher to be open to meeting who Eddie is dating. This is why they didn't show Eddie picking up Chris or having another heart to heart with him. Christopher was safe and with the one person Eddie trusts most with him. We already saw Eddie's reaction when he picked up the phone and Buck told him he was there. We already saw Buck's reaction in this conversation he has with Christopher. And we saw Christopher's reaction to what Buck says, to the reassurance he provided. It all makes sense.
Especially this line "Christopher loves having her around." I've always focused on how that line is important for Eddie's character but it really is also important for Christopher's. Which makes me worry slightly for him should Eddie break it off with Ana and it's not handled appropriately (meaning should Eddie just kick her to the curb and drive away without looking back, though I doubt he would do it like that). While Eddie needs to follow his heart like Carla tells him in 4x13, he and Christopher aren't just a package deal, their characters really are synonymous with each other in this dynamic. Eddie has been wanting someone to stay; so has Christopher. And if Christopher is Eddie's heart (he is), then it's absolutely no mystery to me that he went to Buck to get what he needed. There literally is no difference between the scene above and this one:
Tumblr media
They are a family, folks. Buck literally is Eddie's partner and co-parent to Christopher. Eddie has been trying to recreate the conventional family mold when really his family has already been complete for some time now. Which is exactly why I think the writers chose for Eddie to reveal the will change to Buck in 4x14 (besides letting Evan know he wasn't expendable), because Eddie finally realized. He realized after the well collapse in 3x15 who would care for Christopher the way he wanted and the way Christopher deserved. He then realized Buck is important to us and I need to let him know how much. Eddie needed reassurance that Buck wasn't going anywhere (in 3x09). Then Christopher needed reassurance that Buck wasn't going anywhere. In 4x14, Buck needed that same reassurance.
Christopher has two dads. I'm going to keep saying it. Holy shit, they literally are a family. Excuse me, brb, gonna go cry in a corner.

Supernatural Season 4 Review/Thoughts
Season 4, hoo boy...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Notes: y'all, I've been getting through like 4 episodes a night,,, is that normal?
Things I liked:
the (I feel) very deliberate lack of much sound at the beginning of 4x01 felt very nice and consistent with the end of 3x16 and very very beginning of 4x01
cas's entrance was very much hyped up and very much lived up to that hype
new ruby?? i think I love her??
i think overall, the concept of these episodes are getting better and better plotwise?
in 4x21 When the Levee Breaks, the use of young Sam was HEARTBREAKINGLY AMAZING
I LOVED the obvious differences between Cas and Jimmy, so impressed with Misha
Ruby's villain speech? Impeccable
Things I didn't like:
lololo the Sam drinking demon blood scenes are so hard to watch,,,
ok. Dean says this thing in 4x13 After School special where he's like "wowo 3 of the cheerleaders are legal!" and it really made me uncomfy bc I feel like we've kind of moved away a lil from that being his main character trait..idk
the whole chuck being the supernatural author thing,, getting bad vibes from it
so 4x21 and 4x22 where Dean/hallucination Dean was calling Sam a monster and sounding like J*hn, it hurt me. like STOP BRINGING HIM UP!
On the Head of a Pin was kind of gore-y and not my style, also I don't like Alistair's accent
Other Thoughts:
4x06 Yellow Fever I thought was really interesting how one of them was directly affected by the thing that they were hunting
Anna? very very interesting
jkdasl;jfdks there's a scene where Dean calls Sam a knowitall but when Sam goes "what" Dean just goes "what" back and it's SO GOOD
It's a Terrible Life kind of supports my thesis: Sam is sort of the smartest character in Supernatural :/
the ghostfacers guys are back! i love them!
omg 4x20 The Rapture was INSANE, I had no idea what I was in for with that one,,(abt to make a post, I'll link it here in a min)
oh MY GOD did they think that 4x14 Sex and Violence made Dean look straight?? NO SIR! HILARIOUS
Adam?? what?? so confused??
a lot of the stuff in When the Levee Breaks with Sam's withdrawal kind of hit hard since I'm trying to stop SHing, and Jared really portrayed it well
Favorite Episodes: Lazarus Rising, It's a Terrible Life, The Rapture
Least Favorite Episodes: Metamorphosis, Criss Angel is a Douche Bag, On the Head of a Pin
Episodes I Cried At: Lazarus Rising, Wishful Thinking, Heaven and Hell, Jump the Shark, When the Levee Breaks
I am a real old lady, living in Israel, and I am a Klaine-MPreg addict. Do you have a list, or know of a list, of these stories. The regular klaine list (Lynne & Zinnia) doesn't have one. Thanks. OLK
A search for completed mpreg fics resulted in 183 fics on AO3 and 125 fics on FF.net. Here are the search results on S&C. Judging by the number of hits or favorites on these stories, there are plenty of readers that like mpreg!Klaine fics.
Under the cut are 11 mpreg!Kurt fics and 17 mpreg!Blaine fics. I placed an asterisk against the authors who have written a few mpreg stories.
Warning: Some of these also contain boypussy. Make sure you read the tags or author comments if this bothers you. Happy reading! HKVoyage
AoS rewatch:  1x06 FZZT
And with this, we start that season 1 thing with spelling words in titles as if they were acronyms, though this one is only typed in capital letters but without the periods, unlike T.R.A.C.K.S.
This is the best episode of the first part of season 1, in spite of being one of the few that have no elements of the overall storyline. If all the early season 1 episodes were like this, no one would be saying anything against pre-Winter Soldier season 1. The standalone story is a great one, and it is full of important character moments and character development, Especially for Simmons and Fitz, and their relationship. This is where they stop being just comic relief supporting characters and become fully fledged characters.
Simmons later had a lot of inconsistent writing, but her characterization in this episode is perfect. It’s certainly one of her best episodes ever. We see everything from her rationality and scientific curiosity which can sometimes sound a bit creepy (”So sad a man died this way…and yet, so amazing.“), her determination and her courage and willingness to spare the others the responsibility to sacrifice her, by sacrificing herself to save everyone.
And it’s the first great FitzSimmons episode – where their relationship is in the focus and the heart of the story. There’s a lot of fun bickering, as there always is, but then we also get to see how much they mean to each other, how much Fitz is willing to risk for Jemma, and  we get the first hints he may be feeling something romantic for her.
One of the differences between Fitz and Jemma is how much is Fitz is grossed out by things like dead bodies (or  needles stuck into eyes, as in 1x04) while Simmons is cool and unaffected by them (but if she weren’t, it would be hard for her to do her job). I relate to Fitz in this case.
Simmons taunts him that he’s „afraid“ of a dead body, which angers him and he protests that he’s not afraid, just disgusted. Later, she says he was too afraid to go into the field. But when it comes to saving Simmons, Fitz is later completely unafraid to get into the lab with her and risk getting infected himself, and later wanted to jump off a plane to save her.
But before that, at the beginning of the episode, Fitz’ little crush on Skye gets its swan song as he makes a terrible attempt at hitting at her, which she doesn’t even register. She’s too busy talking about her problems with Ward – who has been ignoring her - and comparing him to her ex-boyfriend Miles, and she also has noticed the FitzSimmons chemistry before either of them have, pointing out that they are „psychically linked“. She has always been the world’s biggest FitzSimmons shipper.
Speaking of which, the ship name itself is again spoken in canon: just like the doc in the Pilot, Coulson refers to them as a single unit, „FitzSimmons“.
Fitz and Simmons’ impersonations of Ward are both terrible. Why do they make him sound like Edward James Olmos?
The only thing that feels out of place in this episode is May’s interrogation of one of the witnesses, who’s a little boy. It’s a humorous scene where she offers him a cookie, but looks completely intimidating while doing it. This doesn’t really make sense, as we know that May can be softer, and we now know that she is usually very caring with children. And scaring an already traumatized child shouldn’t be funny.
Indeed, Skye, I’m also shocked that neither Coulson nor Ward are familiar with The Big Lebowski. Well, actually, I’m not at all shocked that Ward hasn’t.
Foreshadowing: Ward: „Everyone looks clean on the first go round. Dig deeper“
At this point, I’m not sure if Ward is really still angry at Skye (I did believe he really was in 1x05, but only because he was jealous of Miles), or if he thinks that he now needs to continue his performance of being a strict, loyal SHIELD agent angered by Skye’s Rising Tide allegiance.
It’s a testament to how good this episode is, that it succeeds in making you feel for  Diaz, the firefighter about to die, a minor character who’s only been on screen for a couple of minutes. The writing and the acting is really good. This episode’s plot is so sad, because the victims are people who were heroes helping and saving others, and they died as an indirect result of that. It’s also possibly the only episode where the team isn’t dealing with any villains who intentionally caused this, but a virus and an accidental infection.
This is also one of the best episodes for Coulson. The scene where he stays with the dying firefighter as long as he can, to make it easier for him, telling him about his own death experience, is really beautiful. (We never find out if what he told him was true, or just something he said to make him feel better.) He cut off the comm with May when she tried to warn him to leave. He does something similar later when he pretends that he lost communications with Blake, because he has no intention of following the order to dump Simmons into the ocean, instead of hoping and believing that she will find the antiserum. And he openly defies Blake and the superiors’ orders at the end of the episode, even replying „Let them try“ when he’s threatened with SHIELD taking the team away from him. (I don’t know how Fury felt about Coulson disobeying his orders – but maybe he liked it, because, after all, he also disobeyed orders that he deemed to be stupid ass orders, like being told to bomb New York.) In spite of the many ways in which the later seasons improved the show, one of the things I’m sad about is that this humane, always compassionate season 1 Coulson was kind of lost, as he became darker and angrier, prone to keeping secrets even from his team, and occasionally too obsessed with revenge.
When watching Ward in these early episodes, the question constantly arises, what is real and what is fake. The speech he gives to Skye, about feeling helpless that he cannot protect his team members from someone, a superpowered psychopath, it is a part of his performance, but is there maybe some grain of truth in it? The best lies are usually those that have a bit of truth in them – an actor needs to find something to relate to give a better performance. Ward was deceiving and manipulating everyone, but at the same time, we know he did develop some feelings for at least some of his teammates. Not just romantic feelings for Skye, but it’s also canon (at least since 3x09) that he projected his little brother into Fitz. The same episode hinted he may have seen Simmons as a sister figure. (I personally believe that he projected his family on the team, which also explains his later negative feelings for them.) And he definitely has a hero complex and wants people to see him as a protector (whether or not this fits with the reality), this is how he defines himself and his worth – it’s one of the constants of his characters throughout the show.
First mention and appearance of Titus Welliver as Agent Felix Blake
We find out that FitzSimmons have never even passed their field assessments.
So many defining FitzSimmons moments. FitzSimmons sitting on the different sides of the lab door, separated.
That moment. That moment when they are arguing and Fitz starts saying that she has been always by his side, that they’ve spent every moment together (“You’ve been beside me the whole damn time!”) – and his face changes. That’s when he realizes just how much Simmons means to him. And it’s the moment when so many fans started shipping FitzSimmons.
It’s right after that he went into the lab with her to do everything to help her find a way to save herself „We’re gonna fix this together“
Fitz desperately yelling: „JEMMA!“ - I’m pretty sure that’s the first time on the show he has called her by her first name.
Going by what we’ve seen so far – countries SHIELD has offices in include Morocco and China, but apparently not Peru or Belarus (and, going by 4x14, no office in Russia, either).
I love the way Simmons corrects Ward about his imitation of her bad imitation of him.
Aw, the Skye-Simmons hug was sweet. The Bus Kids friendship was one of the things that the show developed very convincingly from the start, in a relatively small number of episodes.
In the ongoing story of Coulson worrying about his earlier death and comeback, he has ordered his own physical exam. This is so far the most tender May/Coulson scene, and the tenderest May has been in the show. (And I bet the writers were being intentionally naughty and ship-teasing when they put the„Take off your shirt“ line in there.)
The last scene, where Fitz is unhappy and a bit jealous that he didn’t  get to save Simmons from jumping, but Ward did instead (don’t worry, Fitz, Ward had a much better chance of succeeding there, let everyone play to their strengths), and Simmons reassures him that he was the one who did most to help and save her, being there with her in the lab, and gives him a cheek kiss… if Fitz didn’t realize before that his feelings for Jemma may be romantic, he is definitely starting to understand it here, going by that last shot of him, deep in thoughts.
Buck & Eddie: The Lightning Strike (Combined scenes from 6x10 & 6x11)
The scene of Buck being struck by lightning at the end of 6x10 “In a Flash” has been combined with the scene of the 118 arriving at the hospital with him in 6x11 “In Another Life”.  They were edited into one full scene to illustrate the way Buck being dead for 3 minutes affected Eddie and the rest of the 118.
It’s unclear WHY the scene of Maddie and Margaret was inserted at the beginning of 6x11 but it affected the pacing of both episodes because it wasn’t logical from a TIMING perspective.  At the end of 6x10, Bobby called dispatch while they were loading Buck into the ambulance and he told them they were 3 minutes out.  So... there are two questions that need to be answered.  First, who notified the LAFD representative that arrived at Maddie’s and Chimney’s house?  Second, how did he get to their house so fast?
It would have made more sense if the scene with Maddie and Margaret would have been shown after Buck arrived at the hospital especially since Buck’s coma dream started right after the commercial break.  Also it took Maddie and their parents a while to arrive at the hospital and they weren’t shown talking to Bobby until after Buck saw Daniel in his dream.  If 6x11 would have started with the 118 arriving at the hospital, it could have remedied this pacing issue and it would have maintained the suspense that carried over from the end of 6x10.  They did it with The Shooting and it would have been nice if they would have done it with The Lightning Strike too.
The Shooting started at the end of 4x13 “Suspicion” but it continued at the very beginning of 4x14 “Survivors” which maintained the suspense of what happened to both Eddie and Buck. Suspicion ended with Buck and Eddie staring at each other right before Eddie went unconscious for the first time and Survivors started with Eddie on the ground with his eyes closed and Buck coming out of his catatonic state of shock and making a split-second decision to roll underneath a LADDER TRUCK (the same type of truck that crushed his leg in 2x18 “This Life We Choose”) so he could save Eddie.  Even though Bobby and Athena ended 4x13 (right before Eddie was shot) still in the middle of an argument, their next scene wasn’t shown until 4x14 when Bobby answered Hen’s call about Eddie.  Therefore the show could have done the same thing in 6x11 with the Maddie and Margaret scene.
Watching the scenes from 6x10 and 6x11 together WITHOUT the scene of Maddie and Margaret in between the two of them makes it hit different. Watching Eddie drive the ambulance in a panic only to immediately hear him tell Chimney he was taking over doing chest compressions on Buck IS PALPABLE.
These types of pacing issues have plagued seasons 5 and 6 but it doesn’t seem like they’re going to be resolved anytime soon. Hopefully they will be resolved before the end of the season but with the way seasons 5 and 6A happened, it’s unlikely.
Daryl and Carol - S5 Template (Maybe)
As I said in an ask on Sunday, I want to talk more about this Daryl/Carol situation. Because we see them in the trailer a lot riding on his motorcycle together, many people have speculated that at the end of the season, they’ll basically ride off together into the sunset.
Tumblr media
Now, as far as I know that is just speculation. No one has any idea if this will actually going to happen or not. Maybe we’ll see them riding around on his motorcycle in the first episode and then there'll be nothing of the sort for the rest of the season. We simply don't know.
But I had an epiphany over the last week that made me think about the possibility of them leaving the group together. Counter-intuitive though this may seem, them doing so might be a good thing for us. I think we have evidence that it would lead to them running into Beth. Let me explain.
First, let me reiterate one more time that even if they do take off together, it will be as a mother/son pairing not as a romantic one. Angela Kang recently did an interview where she pretty much confirmed Daryl and Carol aren’t heading for romance, so it’s not something we need to worry about.
So here’s the thing. Last week's Fear episode (5x15) got me thinking about the bridge symbolism. In that episode, a bridge little literally falls apart beneath them.
Tumblr media
We already know that the bridge represents the community. So, the bridge falling apart beneath them represented the community falling apart. We already kind of knew that at the end of 5x15, but 5x16 confirmed it. Ginny came to “help” them but she split them all up, which means their community is in shambles, much as TF’s was right after the fall the prison. Everyone separated, split up, in different places, and trying to find their way back to each other. So, the bridge falling apart represented that.
I was just turning this over my head and thinking about the bridge symbolism. I mentally ran through the various episodes that have had bridges in them and what they represented. This is when I got my epiphany. I started thinking about when Daryl and Carol went off the bridge together in 5x06 and what it meant.
In the past, I’ve always assumed that it was a foreshadow of Beth’s arc. Falling off a bridge generally means getting separated from the community. But it doesn't always have to be the person who fell off the bridge who is separated.
Tumblr media
For example, there was that time Tara fell off the bridge in 7x06, Swear. Yes, she was separated from her community for a short time while she went and discovered Oceanside, but overall, I'm not sure she really fits the bill. She wasn’t gone very long and nobody presumed she was dead. She simply wasn’t gone long enough for that to be the case.
So, while her falling off the bridge represented her being away from the community in the short term, I think it also represented Heath disappearing for a long period of time.
Tumblr media
Because Heath, like Beth, has been gone for years. There hasn’t been much talk about him (to be fair, there hasn’t been much talk about Beth either) and I think we can assume TF thinks he's dead because he never came back.
To top it all off, Angela Kane confirmed that Jadis gave him to the helicopter people. So, Heath and Rick at the very least are in the same place and that has been confirmed. But I digress. Once more, I think Tara falling off the bridge represented Heath’s absence more than it did hers.
So, back to Daryl and Carol. Given that template, I always assumed that them going off the bridge in 5x06 was a foreshadow of Beth being separated from the group for a long time. And I still think that’s a valid interpretation, given everything we’ve seen.
But here’s something that occurred to me last week in thinking about the bridge stuff. Because of all this talk of Daryl and Carol taking off together, it occurred to me that if they do leave together, that would be them leaving the community together. Obviously. And…the two of them went off a bridge together in 5x06.
To see what I mean, you kinda have to take a giant backward. Look not at the specifics, but at the very broad sequences of everything that happened in S5, because I think everything—truly EVERYTHING—that happened in S4 and S5 were foreshadows of bigger things that would happen later.
We’ve already proven this with quite a few events. This is just another one that, if Daryl and Carol leave the communities together, will end up being true as well. For example, Beth being separated from Daryl in the short term, from 4x13 to 5x08 was a foreshadow of them being separated for much longer time after Coda.
Similarly, I'm thinking about the fact that in 5x02, Carol tried to leave and Daryl stopped her. Then the two of them took off together to find Beth. Literally, the two of them left the rest of the group at Father Gabriel's church and took off on their own. Only after that did they figure out where Beth was and come face-to-face with her.
But it's so much more than that. The more I think about it, the more the parallels lineup. Let's back up and talk about Carol. Why did she try to leave in 5x02? Because she just suffered a major trauma by losing a child. Actually, by losing children (Lizzie and Mika.) She was depressed over the death of a child and was trying to leave the group over it. Daryl stopped her from leaving just before the two of them took off together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, going into season 10, Carol has been traumatized by the death of Henry, her child. From what I can tell, at the beginning of S10, she’s just returned from being out on a boat. Which means she's leaving the community to go off on her own and deal with her grief. The reason she and Daryl are happy to see each other is simply because they haven't in a while. So, their little reunion in 10x01 will parallel their reunion in 5x01. They’ve been separated for time and are just glad to see each other. BFFs, after all, right?
Do you see why the two of them leaving together might be a big thing a good thing for TD? It won't be a romantic thing anymore than it was in 5x06. I don't know why they would choose to leave the communities together plot-wise, but if they’re following the template of S5, the two of them leaving together will probably lead directly to them running into Beth.
Tumblr media
You could even argue that Tyreese parallels Ezekiel. Even though Carol and Ty weren’t a romantic couple, they were sort of “playing house” in 4x14. They actively talked about staying there and raising the girls together, just as Carol and Ezekiel raised Henry together. In 5x02, Carol had just lost Tyreese. And while Zeke isn’t dead, she’s still lost him, and their relationship by having left him after Henry died. The parallels are strong with this one, my friends.
Another thought that’s been bouncing around in my head lately? My fellow theorists and I have been examining that final scene of Slabtown a lot lately. The one where Beth walks down the hall holding scissors, as though she's about to attack Dawn or Edwards, but then Carol is brought in on a stretcher and she backs off.
Tumblr media
The reasons we’ve been examining this scene are irrelevant to this post (just a few background symbols we've been looking at) but I think it's because I keep looking at that scene lately that this occurred to me.
So, we think Beth is with the helicopter people. And we know Rick is. I had the thought some time ago that maybe Carol being brought in on the stretcher was a foreshadow of something bigger later on.
Tumblr media
I can see Beth being with the helicopter people, trying to stage a coup and get away from them, but then she stops when someone is brought in that she recognizes. In this case, it would be Rick. I mean he was pretty much on stretcher when they took him away in the helicopter, and we know he was badly hurt. If Beth is with the helicopter people, there's a good chance she might be there when they bring Rick in and he needs medical care.
I still think that's a possibility, but if Daryl and Carol take off together in the same way they did in S5, well, maybe it will actually be Carol again who is brought in. Maybe it will be a very specific replay of what happened in S5. Carol getting hit by a car in Atlanta could have a parallel to something in the future that will eventually happen to take Carol to wherever Beth is. Same as S5.
Tumblr media
I have no idea if this will pan out or not. If Daryl and Carol don’t leave the communities together, the entire thing will be moot anyway. But remember that Melissa was seen filming in Texas (presumable for Fear), as was Michonne’s stunt double. Norman was seen at a Texas airport as well, around the same time, but there’s some speculation that might have been for Ride. There just no way to be certain.
But, if I'm right about this template, a lot of the interesting things in Consumed suddenly make more sense. We saw a lot of suspicious symbols like red cars and red + green tents on the sky bridge (BRIDGE!).
Tumblr media
Anyway, I think this has a lot of potential. I can't help but be curious about who will fill Noah's role if they retell this part with Daryl and Carol looking for Beth. There's no telling who will be, but it would have to be someone who's escapes the helicopter group (where Beth is) and somehow tells Daryl and Carol about it.
 I can't help but think it will probably be someone from Morgan's group. Morgan himself? Dwight maybe? We just have some really interesting possibilities and some great ways to connect these story lines. It makes me super excited. Of course, just to reiterate one more time, this is all conjecture right now. But super-fun conjecture to think about! 😉
Hey so, you've probably been asked this before and if so you can just completely ignore this. But. I know there's been plenty of talk about the differences of Dean and Sam's personalities and families in It's a Terrible Life, but I've yet to seen anyone (as far as I remember anyway) talk about theories of why Sam's fiancé is Madison, and not Jess? Or Sarah? Far as I've come on that theory is, maybe because of the Werewolf thing? And how it relates to Sam's own "demons"? Thoughts?
I like your optimism that I have already been asked all of *the* most obscure questions :D Hehe
The fact Sera wrote both episodes is my first port of call, and Madison would be her own character so faster to mind. I think Heart is also one of her pet favourite episodes although do not ask me how I know that because It’s almost certainly something I read 7 years ago :P
I would also have to assume on a boring technical level that they were trying to come up with uncanny valley lives, and Dean’s fake life already collected up Bobby and Ellen and Jo, while Sam’s life was deliberately meant to be the less well-developed one because Zach had just thrown together enough to stop him realising the game was up *immediately*, while not bothering to make a complete enough backstory that Sam wouldn’t help motivate Dean because without the much bigger cracks through which their old life came, Sam wouldn’t be able to motivate him in the same way. I don’t think he made many mistakes in the set up except mildly underestimating Dean (while still getting exactly what he wanted out of him by the end of the episode - in the short term, in the long term that’s when Dean gives him the “stab you in the face” warning :P), since he would have been constantly watching them, like an ant farm, and could have fixed Sam if he WASN’T meant to poke at his own backstory. Sam was never really their focus since Ruby had him under lock down doing her side of things and the angels by that point were all aboard on starting the apocalypse.
So I think the last most obvious reason it’s Madison is because Sam was just being mocked as a disposable character, and it really comes across that way when you know the whole story and who set it up:
SAMYeah, ‘cause I only moved here 'cause I just broke up with my fiancée, Madison. But I called her number and I got a damn animal hospital.
And in that sense, Madison is really tragic for us to know was a really awful thing that happened to Sam romantically since Jess, but also has this set up to be mocked and a too-easy joke for Zach. I think if it had been Jess there would have been the danger of him remembering too much, in character, and out of character if the writing process was casting around for a love interest to have a “hilarious” joke from Zach about them, Sam’s girl of the week options are limited and Sarah and Lori from hookman in the first season were both fairly sweet and survived the episode without much interpersonal drama for Sam, while Madison was also very tragic so mocking her and what Sam went through with her, is a very blatant example from the first couple of seasons of Sam being put through the wringer - I think he cried more in that episode than he’s done for the rest of the show since :P There’s much more obvious material to make a joke from than most of his other romantic connections and the only one who he actually cared about (since season 3 had him mostly just being set up for Ruby, while lusting after Bela a little… and honestly at this point trying to think who else Sam has been linked to, the Bad Writer Voice in my brain that comes up with all the junk pile snark suggested that old woman from 3x06 who pawed all over Sam - “But I called her number and I got a damn retirement home.” … So let’s be glad it was Madison :P)
Anyways, if there’s a wider meta purpose you probably got it… Madison is one of the monsters that Sam’s been connected to romantically, and actually Dean seems to think Sam’s got together with a lot more monsters than he actually has because in 4x14 he has some line about what is it with Sam and monster chicks or something, thinking he’s sleeping with the siren (whoops) and he’s reacting to Sam saying he and Ruby are together. Madison is really the only other major example, although Dean also thought Sam had a thing for Ava who he might not have qualified as a monster at the time, but *would* have classified as like finding like if he thought Sam had a crush, since they both had psychic powers and by season 4 that’s all the backstory to Sam’s struggle with humanity. (I mean honestly, Madison seemed to traumatise them both for different reasons so I could get if she stuck out in Dean’s memory even if he seems to tease Sam for it, it would be making light of it as a coping mechanism to the awful stuff they’ve done on the job.)
I’d also get if the show wanted us to think Sam had a bigger history with this than he does - hence the line in 4x14 AND this reminder about Madison - because they like making generalisations of their history to tell the story, focusing on one or two incidents and making it sound like a life-long pattern (despite Jess being Sam’s defining romance and characterised by the normality and that he lied to her about monsters to protect a bubble of normality). We won’t find out about Amy Pond until season 7 aka they don’t write it until then, so it’s retroactively adding to the pattern that was barely a pattern in season 4, but if they want to build up the image of Sam being attracted to monsters as part of the question about his own nature, trying to remind us that Ruby isn’t his first is a good way to go about that.
Then they end the season with Dean or false representations of him repeatedly telling Sam that he’s a monster or he isn’t human any more and Sam picks Ruby over Dean, and throws his own humanity away blah blah blah we all know the story :P (I say, blah-ing away one of the best season finales on the show.)
… TBH the show trying to set up this narrative that you are what you sleep with just reminds me that in the version of the Winchester Gospels where Sam doesn’t drink demon blood, this is all excellent supporting narrative/examples to build up the ridiculous counterpoint Destiel subtext going on on the other side :P Which is kind of a joke I make but season 4 is told a LOT through their sexual preferences and encounters. If I was going to write a serious academic paper about the show where you don’t need to make the same disclaimers about intent and interpretation as you do on Tumblr it would be excellent to examine season 4′s main arc and plot points as told through the representations of their sexuality, because the Sam/Ruby, and Dean/Cas/Anna major narrative parallel of you are what you sleep with is barely scratching the surface… It’s a huge thing. The siren episode doesn’t just *happen* to be in this season and it’s not a random isolated incident, it’s one of the many ways this undercurrent of the season shows up. And that puts the Sam and monsters subtext directly next to Dean and dudes, which lines up perfectly with playing Sam/Ruby off Dean/Cas for the length of the season. Hey and lo and behold in 4x17 Sam has a history with Madison, and Dean has a hot co-worker he hangs out with, and a deep insecurity about the idea of Sam hitting on him in the elevator (… at work), and some queercoded behaviours, and a complete lack of love life mentioned in the main text, including shoving Jo hard into the sister box in the same exchange we find out about Sam and Madison…
Tim coudn't have chosen a worst co- show runner if he could. That's why even 4x14 felt so strange we had some great scenes in between her BT fanfiction. That's why she was the only one that saw buck that way, that's why 5x07 and 5x09 were BT centered. Honestly hope she get fired like tonight. Thanks to her a lot of people lost all the enthusiasm for 5b, we will how the ratings will go on monday
I'm sure she won't get fired but hey! We manifested it on another show so who knows! 🤣
I honestly always felt like 4x14 was giving me whiplash! We had the shooting scene and ride to the hospital, the Chris scene and Will scene (both of which Tim apparently fought to put in because she didn't want them), but in between All Of That, we had the reporter of all people being the only one to see (that we are shown or told) Buck right after?! Bobby's reaction to Buck seemed weird given what we learned this season about Buck's parents, Buck didn't even get any hugs?! From anyone except Chris?! This was a perfect Bobby/Buck bonding opportunity or even a moment for Chim and Buck, or Hen and Buck, but instead we got....the reporter who didn't actually offer any comfort and only managed to take advantage of Buck being a literal mess, not to mention using the same kind of language his mom used to berate him. The "you didn't chase after me" line will never not make steam come out of my ears in anger 😤😤😤, the kiss in the middle of everything, her being at Eddie's welcome home party when no one from the 118 was there?! I get them not wanting to overwhelm him his first day back home, and maybe they were all on shift, but it was such a weird look. IDK, the vibes and the story they were trying to tell with 4x14 was just kinda all over the place. And yeah, it's set up to show BT being doomed from the start but like, pick a different episode and stop missing good emotional beats just to wedge her into an episode she didn't belong in.
Same with 5x07, and 5x09, we didn't need any of that! Her other brief moments were important to show the cracks in the BT relationship and Buck slowly isolating himself, getting no emotional support from her, and falling back into bad habits as everything else is crumbling around him, but we didn't need any of her backstory to do that, especially when we know next to nothing about Ravi, and being down several characters means we could have spent more time with the ones we DO have still around.
That's the concern I have about the new character coming along as well. People are already demanding that she's more than a love interest and needs to have her own arc and be her own character and it's like no! No she doesn't! That's not her purpose here! If she was a new main being added then yes (but also no because I'd rather see more about Ravi than them adding another new main and learning about them instead), she would need to be her own character but she's not (at least not yet but if y'all don't shut up she might be and then we'll be right back where we were with 5a), she's here to be a foil for Buck. He's not been pushed to the brink yet, and if Breaking Point taught us anything it's that he's got a least one more bad life choice left in him. Buck's been languishing in the dark feeling suffocated for too long. He's getting ONE (1) hit of adrenaline that makes him feel alive again, and he's gonna go off the deep end a bit. And none of the firefam will push him towards that because they know about his issues with acting expendable. Lucy does not. Just like Lena had no way of knowing Eddie was not going to use fighting as a healthy outlet, but turn it into something else, Lucy won't know that Buck has zero regard for his own life and isn't just out there having a good time.
I actually am really excited for this arc and I think it's going to be so interesting to see, and the potential for good Buddie and Buck/Bobby scenes to come out of it, but I probably won't be able to fully enjoy it until we know for sure she's gone forever. 🤷‍♀️ I have faith, but like, not that much faith. Before 4x14 it would be a different story because I honestly thought they were making it so clear BT were bad together that them getting together was not even on my radar. 🙃🙃🙃
