Pro Hero! Class 1-A's most popular demographics and just some thoughts about them
Pinky: mass appeal. Pretty much everyone loves her, but she's especially popular with pre-teens because of her bubbly, fun attitude and physical strength.
Froppy: most popular with children BUT unsurprisingly beloved by people who live near the coasts, where she usually works, because of her rescue capabilities and no-nonsense but kind demeanor.
Ingenium: most popular with people in the 20s-50s demographic. He's not great with young people (somewhat stiff personality) but his competence, dedication, and compassion are widely respected. Old people also like his proper behavior and he has a large, thirsty contingent of female fans in their 20s because of how hot he is under the helmet.
Uravity: super popular with teenage girls in particular as many see her as a role model, especially those who also come from low-income backgrounds. She also has a large fan following from the martial arts community and often assists in demonstrations at martial arts schools.
Tailman: His largest following is martial artists of all ages and he likes it that way. Older senseis in particular highly respect him, especially his adaptability and creation of new styles to accommodate his Quirk, so he regularly gets invitations from all over Japan and other countries known for martial arts (like China and Brazil) to come learn and develop new fighting techniques.
Chargebolt: huge popularity with little kids for his friendly, goofy demeanor and cool Quirk. As someone with a very difficult to control Quirk that took him until he was 19 or 20 to fully master, he visits kindergartens and elementary schools regularly to help newly-manifested kids control theirs. Also has a sizeable following among gay men for his good looks.
Red Riot: mass appeal. He hits vitually every demographic with ease and the public adores him. He is considered "Husband Material" by many and receives legions of marriage proposals. He keeps every gift and drawing kids send him and he is known for being very kind and patient during and after rescues. His dedication towards chivalry has paid off in the form of being one of the most consistently popular heroes in Japan.
Anima: most popular among animal rights activists, environmentalists, and animal lovers of all kinds. As a hero who communicates primarily in JSL, he also has a lot of fans in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities as well as among people with speech disabilities.
Sugarman: he has a small but dedicated group of fans in the crossover community of "guys who like baking" and "guys who like bodybuilding."
Tentacole: HUGE popularity among people with mutant-type Quirks. He's not primarily a battle or rescue hero so he doesn't get a lot of attention from the media, but his recon skills and rock-solid temperament are unmatched and are often the thing that changes the tide of a difficult battle to favor the heroes. Other heroes speak very highly of him, so he has been getting increased media attention lately. The day he went on a talk show and took his mask off on-air broke the internet and led to a national conversation about discrimination against people with mutant Quirks.
Earphone Jack: she deliberately flies under the radar as she primarily works underground recon. She has a small fan following who try to spot her every time she re-surfaces in the background of a larger battle that requires her offensive capability. There is a massive online conspiracy theory that the hero Earphone Jack and popular solo punk musician Kyouka are actually the same person.
Cellophane: popular among teenage boys and young men. Women like him too, but his laid-back and sarcastic personality meshes well with younger guys. Surprisingly huge group of lesbian fans for the same reason, especially his dry humor. Everyone wants to be his friend and his interviews are always hilarious.
Tsukuyomi: really, really popular among goths, punks, and other alternative-types; basically, anyone who feels like an outsider, especially kids who are treated as villainous because of their Quirk. He gives talks about Quirk assumptions and mentors a lot of at-risk teenagers in his spare time. His serious and reserved demeanor makes it difficult for the general public to connect with him, but his bravery and humility make up for it and he is generally well-liked and well-respected as a hero. Dark Shadow has entire Instagram accounts dedicated to it, as does Tsukoyomi's soothing, sonorous voice.
Shouto: his demographic is solidly adults in their 20s-50s. His battle prowess is nothing to joke about and he is a hero who primarily faces the most dangerous villains Japan has to offer. He is also unfathomably hot, so his good looks have a huge fanbase of their own, especially among young women and teenage girls. Something often said about Shouto is "the camera loves him, the microphone hates him" and interviews are not his forte. His extremely blunt and quite awkward personality puts old people and kids off him, but his dedication and compassion during rescues usually change his naysayers’ minds. He is certified as a field medic and, controversially, is a major advocate for both villain rehabilitation and for heroes to have more accountability for the way they treat others behind closed doors. His characteristically blunt "It literally doesn't matter how powerful a hero is if they're beating their kids at home" soundbite has swayed a lot of people to his cause.
Invisible Girl: does not have a fanbase and does not want a fanbase. She works extremely dangerous undercover and espionage missions and virtually nothing is known about her by the public except that there's a hero registered as "Invisible Girl." Every student and teacher who knew her at U.A. is sworn into secrecy and they often go a year or more without hearing anything from her.
Dynamight: unexpectedly, his single biggest, loudest, most dedicated demographic is pre-teen girls. We're talking feral little bastard girls who growl at the other kids and get into trouble at school. Let's be clear: this is not a crush situation, he's just like their god or something. Other heroes, like Cellophane and Chargebolt, tease him about being Great Explosion Murder God-sama, but he personally thinks it's funny and secretly likes his unhinged hellions. Other than them, his next biggest demographics are teenagers and young adults for his good looks, unmatched combat skill, and intense, unforgettable personality. Even as a mature adult, he's not very good with young children (he often scares them even by accident), and old people and the media find him rude and unlikeable. The public is surprised when he begins speaking regularly, intelligently, and very seriously about the importance of stopping Quirk-hierarchies in schools and society in general as they lead to bullying and discrimination for those treated as lesser (like Quirkless people) and psychosocial and personality issues for those treated as greater (like himself). Related to this cause, he is the face of the growing group of heroes who want to stop using the ranking system. In general, the public doesn't quite know what to do with him as none of the facets of his personality and causes seem to line up for anyone that doesn't know him personally.
Deku: mass, international appeal. His warm, kind, enthusiastic personality and natural empathy makes him extremely popular with civilians, even if his crybaby status never went away as he got older. He is seen as the face of modern Japanese heroics and usually represents his country at various hero conferences around the world. Though he has the most powerful combat-oriented Quirk among Japanese heroes, his power is so great that most of the time, he only gets called out for the most dangerous situations outside of his regular patrols. If needed, other countries also call on him to help in their own situations, so regretfully, Deku has to leave most smaller and medium incidents to other heroes so he can be available for the biggest problems. While he’s on-call and waiting to be summoned, Deku works in the control room of various missions as a gifted combat strategist and Quirk analyst, often working as a consultant for hero team-ups and match-ups against villains. However, his many fans and friends are also increasingly worried about him as he never seems to take days off or time to himself; he has unwittingly and embarrassingly sparked a national debate about work-life balance for heroes, especially as his mentor essentially worked himself into the ground trying to be everything to everyone everywhere at once. This debate led to a new labor law requiring heroes to take mandatory, regular vacations, work a reasonable number of hours per week, and have frequent check-ins with a therapist to prevent mental burnout. As a person, Deku also gained great admiration for the op-ed he published supporting Dynamight’s cause against Quirk-hierarchies, admitting the truth about One For All and his prior Quirkless status in the process.
Grape Juice: widely despised except among men who self-identify as “incels.” By his early 20s, his hero license has been suspended multiple times as credible accusations and eyewitness accounts of sexual misconduct are brought to light and he is currently facing permanent revocation of his hero status, multiple lawsuits, and possibly prison time. Many heroes are expected to testify against him, including his co-workers at the small, unpopular agency that took him on after graduation when no one else would as well as all of his former classmates (including a modulated voice testimony by the elusive Invisible Girl) and retired hero Eraserhead.
Creati: her intelligence, leadership skills, and bravery make her an incredibly popular hero among the public at large. She is also stunningly beautiful, which definitely doesn’t hurt her public perception, and she has many admirers all over Japan. Despite this aspect of her fanbase, she is seen as an exemplary leader among heroes and is highly respected by all demographics, particularly women.

My Comfort Drama List
I think I just really enjoy making lists right now lol
Anyway, I’m currently in pain thanks to period cramps, so I decided now is the time to make and share a list of my personal go-to comfort K-dramas. You’ll notice some intersectionality between it and my previous list of favorite shows that I like to return to.
Shopping King Louie (aka Shopaholic Louis)
Coming in as a surprise to no one (literally no one because no one follows me right now lol) is this super cute fluffy rom-com drama. This drama is just absolutely hilarious and because the closest things to “villains/bad guys/antagonists” in this show are so inept/bad, it’s really makes the show’s tenser moments kind of low-stakes, but in a good way. I never found myself really worried for long.
Louis and Bok-shil just have the cutest most wholesome relationship, Louis is such an adorably loyal and protective puppy of a guy and Bok-shil is honestly a saint for taking care of his amnesiac self even though it was extremely difficult and trying for her. This show is a trope-fest filled with some of my favorite tropes, it’s also hilarious and never fails to bring a smile to my face.
Overall, just a great drama to watch! I will never stop recommending this show to anyone who will listen to me lol
Tumblr media
W: Two Worlds Apart (aka just “W”)
Another show that will come as a surprise to no one. This is a comfort show for me, I don’t know if it is for anyone else.
I find that I run to this drama a lot, I don’t know why. I love the premise of this show and it’s pretty “whumpy” (I may be using that term incorrectly, one of my best friends just recently introduced me to it), I love how whenever Oh Yeon Joo thinks (or knows) that Kang Cheol is hurt or about to be killed, she runs to save him. I love re-watching the whole show, but sometimes I just want to re-watch my favorite episodes just for the cute romantic fluff moments between them.
As someone who happens to be a fan of Lee Jong-suk, this drama also gives me great eye candy. I dunno what it is about that all-denim outfit (among other outfits), but boy does it do things to my heart lol Between it and his winks, nose scrunches and smile, I’m sold every time lol
Sometimes, a comfort show for me is also just a show where I get to look at the eye candy and that’s okay.
Tumblr media
My Roommate Is A Gumiho
This K-Drama is one that I consider a comfort drama because I like to watch it on days like today. To be clear, it’s not the only reason that I watch it, it’s just one of the reasons. It’s the only K-Drama that I’ve encountered so far that has a scene where the female lead is on her period and the male lead takes care of her. What can I say? I’m weak for that.
In general though, this show has some nice hurt-comfort scenes that just make me soft which are built-in just due to the female lead having the male lead’s fox bead/marble. This show is also quite hilarious and enjoyable to watch. I enjoy turning my brain off and just enjoying the hilariously fun ride of this drama.
Tumblr media
My Strange Hero
Honestly, I first decided to watch this because I saw scenes from it in a multi-K-Drama edit set to the song “Adore You” by Harry Styles that I came across on YouTube. I definitely don’t regret it!
The romance in this is really cute and sweet, there’s some great fluff! This show also has some wonderful comedy mixed in amidst the fluff, heartwarming moments, trying parts, etc.
As someone who is going to school to become a teacher, I found this drama to have a wholesome teacher-class dynamic. I’m trash for the trope of a kind, caring teacher who works really hard to help a struggling class or student do better (my love for the anime Assassination Classroom is additional proof of this). Additionally, I love the plot of taking down/dismantling/fixing a corrupt school and faculty.
Why is this on my comfort list? Well, sometimes I like being reminded of why I want to be a teacher and watching something heartwarming and inspiring like this helps to remind me when I’m not actively working with children lol
Tumblr media
Romance Is A Bonus Book
Lee Jong-suk is back on this list with another drama, partially for eye candy reasons, but mainly because I adore this cozy drama lol I could potentially ctrl+v what I said in one of my other lists, but I’m very specifically going to talk about why it’s on this list.
This show has some of my favorite tropes for a comfort drama and it also talks about books the process behind them being made. As someone who loves reading and who used to turn to books as a way to escape many things (including my ADHD) as a child, I found this drama also having to do with books brings a sense of nostalgia and comfort to me.
Aside from that, I adore the relationship between the main lead (Eun-ho and Dan-i). I loved how kind and supportive Eun-ho was and how he just cheered on Dan-i, worried about her and wanted to help her. I found the show to be quite wholesome despite it being quite different from my usual go-to dramas.
As I have said before, this drama leaves me with a very specific vibe that’s akin to cozying up with a good book while wrapped in a blanket with a warm drink set to the side. It’s just…a warm and cute drama with plenty of romantic fluff ❤️
Tumblr media
Extra-Ordinary You
This K-Drama is a another drama that I really enjoy watching when I'm feeling a bit low. This is the drama that introduced me to Rowoon and, by extension, SF9. This drama is cute, funny and the premise is really interesting. I don’t watch too many school dramas, but I’d definitely watch more if they were like this show!
I love the author slander in this show, I will never stop loving how the self-aware characters talk about how the author is a bad author and I find myself roped in all the time. I find myself also wanting to make jabs at the author too, especially since the author gives off “never actually went to high school” vibes lol
Anyway, I just adore the leads Ha-ru and Dan-oh. They’re super cute and I just love the romantic fluff between them.
I think the only drawback of this drama is how much I hate Dan-oh’s pre-determined-by-author romantic interest, he’s a verbally abusive piece of trash.
Anyway, Rowoon as Ha-ru does a great job of being just a cute boy and making my heart flutter along with Dan-oh’s.
Tumblr media
Doom At Your Service
Try as I might, this drama is just forever going to pop up on my lists even though I fully admit that the 1/2 of this drama that deals with the female lead’s best friend’s love triangle is completely skip-able.
Like W and Romance Is A Bonus Book, this drama is also partially guilty of being on this list for eye candy purposes because Seo In-guk is another of my biases. Again, I’m going to keep my stance that sometimes a comfort drama is a comfort drama because of the eye candy.
I adore this drama and consider it a comfort drama. The leads did such a good job with what they were given and really any scene is made better by them being there in my opinion. I’m really just trash for hurt-comfort where just a “simple touch” can help the person in pain. I didn’t know hand holding could make me so soft. ❤️
Tumblr media
Splash Splash Love
This drama is really good for a quick lil pick-me-up. It’s only about 2 hours long and well worth the time spent to watch! Admittedly, one reason that this drama is on my list is because it also happens to have another one of my biases, Ahn Hyo-seop, in it.
You hate math like me? Great! You’ll find a kindred spirit in the female lead of this drama. She gets transported back in time to the Joseon era after jumping into a puddle on a rainy day. While there, she has to pretend to be a eunuch mathematician in order to survive.
This drama is cute, funny, and has romantic fluff for any fluff lover!
Tumblr media
Some Honorable Mentions:
Basically, K-Dramas that would probably be comfort shows but I haven’t re-watched them quite as many times as the ones on this list (yet).
Business Proposal
While You Were Sleeping
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo
Extraordinary Attorney Woo

A BRIEF DEVILMAN CRYBABY RANT
What on Earth is Devilman Crybaby?
I watched Devilman Crybaby, the 2018 anime, because I heard that it was like a mix between Neon Genesis Evangelion and Berserk.
That’s true, in terms of imagery, symbolism, structure. Even the soundtrack of Devilman is similar to NGE
Devilman Crybaby is also similar to Dune in that both series ask the question “What makes us human?” Answer that question very quickly, and then proceed to spend the rest of the series adding additional footnotes to this thesis.
With Dune, the answer is extraordinarily complicated. According to Devilman Crybaby, it our ability to cry.
Devilman’s themes are not really subtle or  complex. In fact, unlike the other three stories I mentioned, it’s kind of stupid, and that’s what makes it wonderful.
Beginning the first episode, the opening theme song and first scene made me think I was in a for a surreal, poetic experience. It’s a fantastic first scene, introducing us to the characters of Akira and Ryo and setting up the theme of kindness all the while having a wonderful atmosphere.
Then, we suddenly cut to a high-school track practice, and the next few scenes are a blur of horniness, weird jokes, and some of the most inhuman dialogue I’ve ever seen.
A lot of the scenes are also so nonsensically paced, either being way to slow or way to quick, ending either abruptly or a bit after they should have ended. There’s also so many scenes where the actions of character’s straight up make no sense, like that entire scene at the peir.
However, the end of the episode…it sure was something. It sees some pretty awesome body horror and an absolutely brutal fight.
A complaint I do have is the animation. It’s…not good. The character designs themselves are often enjoyable, but the drawing style is just kind of ugly. Ryo’s a good example of this. His design as this thin, regal looking, blonde, pale person who always dresses in white does a great job at telling you what he is as a character, even if it’s basically just the design of Griffith from Berserk. However, he’s drawn with these weirdly shaped eyebrows, and his haircut just looks bizarre. This seems really nitpicky, but it’s important.
A lot of the monsters also seem like they could be a lot cooler if the animation was a bit more detailed.
Not only that, but you can tell that this show was very low budget with all these instances of re-used animation and many obvious cost-cutting measures. There are multiple scenes where we barely see the characters talk and instead just see looping shots of the environment around them.
Oh, also this first episode is super horny. It’s close to being porn sometimes, and I’m not joking or exaggerating. I’m fine with art being horny, but there’s a certain point where it just becomes indulgent. It doesn’t help that, 90% of the time, it’s women being sexualized.
I’m not even going to get into the way the character of Miki is treated.
The episodes after the first one…fine, I guess.
The problem is that this story jumps the gun on its weirdness and darkness, ending the first episode with something very weird and dark. As such, the next few episodes, which are remarkably less insane, just saw me waiting for things to go crazy again.
Another problem is that the series is ridiculously quickly paced. I really liked the main characters of Ryo and Akira, and I liked their dynamic, but they barely had any time together. It doesn’t help that a lot of time is being spent with subplots.
This quick pace continues to hound the series until the very end.
People in this series keep talking about rising crime rates and how the world is going to heck, but this is never elaborated upon.
Characters like the beatboxing gang, Miki’s family, Miko, Psycho Jenny, Akira’s parents, the gay guy, Silene and her friend, and many others, go underdeveloped.
Stuff like government conspiracies, the tattoo gang, the demons having a secret plan, christianity, sexuality, and the meta aspect of the in-universe Tv show, are all underdeveloped.
Only a few plot elements feel completely finished, like running. The use of the relay race at the end is pretty creative, with Ryo not taking the baton, serving as a metaphor for his apathy.
Relay running is used similarly in many other placed. It symbolizes how the gay guy and Miko are being individualists, and Akira being the anchor shows how others depend on him. It ads a bite to Miki’s death. Blah blah blah.
The PE coach was also a brilliant use of set up and pay off carried out over the episodes.
The idea of hands grabbing others is an image used repeatedly throughout.
Miki is also a really nice character, and while I was annoyed at how little agency she had for most of the show, I appreciate how she did help save Akira in that one scene. Unfortunately, that was it, and I feel like we barely knew her as a character.
The tv series has a racism metaphor that I would rank 4/10. It shows how racism against devilmen is bad, but it also claims that demons are ontologically evil and it’s okay to kill them all. There are suggestions that they do have hearts, but this is never elaborated upon.
We see a running pattern here, the show not having enough time. As a result, its themes are half-baked and overly simplistic. It talks about how we should get along, and how humanity are the real monsters, and how individualism is bad, and empathy is nice, and how imperialism is bad, and all that jazz, but it never tied these ideas together.
Compare this to Eva, where it feels like End of Evangelion managed to touch on every idea the show had set up. That’s probably because Eva was twice as long.
It also doesn’t help that this show is almost laughably unsubtle. Miki’s “social media” post that saves people is so on-the-nose.
There’s also scenes that are just weird, like that one scene with Bonito flakes. Also, what was the deal with the kid looking up porn. Also, Donald Trump canonically exists in it. Also, who were the people shooting at the rainforest people?
I’m sure there’s an explanation, but that’s not important. It’s fine if a show is ambiguous, but this doesn’t feel purposeful so much as it feels sloppy.
It feels like the show doesn’t know what it wants to be about, with their being two or three episodes were are titular crybaby barely appears. That’s not great.
I don’t hate all of these subplots, it’s just that none of them go anywhere. For instance, we watch this romance bloom between Miko and Frizzy Haired Guy for two episodes, and I will admit, I like Frizzy Haired Guy. I was rooting for him. Then, he gets killed off and is barely mentioned again. All that buildup was for nothing.
I suppose the story is trying to purposefully be unsatisfying, something both Eva and Berserk do, but when you do that, you need to have a reason. They could have made the scene where Frizzy Haired Guy die really tragic, but they instead make it all flashy and confusing so they can have us wonder if he’s maybe still alive for a bit.
Also, we had this whole episode introducing us to gay dude, and then he randomly goes evil and gets killed off in the last episode. So long, character development!
Comparing this show to Eva again, the ending is almost amazing. The imagery sounds awesome on paper, but the animation and character designs are so minimal. It also feels like Akira stopped growing as a character after the first six episodes. He feels almost removed from the destruction, as it’s all happening because of someone else.
I could also nitpick that entire last episode to hell for the thousand different moments that are written weirdly, like that one scene where Ryo doesn’t notice that Akira’s bottom half has been removed. Also, that ending shot was way to one the nose in looking like End of Evangelion. I know the Devilman manga came before Eva, but I don’t care. Why is the sea even red?
Despite all my complaining, I still like this show. The characters are fun, even if they really aren’t that complex (especially all the characters that aren’t Ryo and Akira). The world-building is imaginative and awe-inspiring, many of the action scenes are pretty cool, and there are moments when the minimal animation does work.
Also, sometimes it’s nice to have a story that’s willing to be as bleak as this one, and as weird as this one.
To be honest, I feel like it could be weirder. I generally understood what was going on most of the time. In fact, the most confusing scenes were from the ordinary slice-of-life segments, like when that family had that giant The Last Supper painting.
I also think an idea which is carried out to its fullest is the idea of apathy. It’s the source of most of the conflict between Ryo and Akira. The ending sees Ryo destroying everything, including the one person he cares about, in his pursuits. It’s a tragic irony, I guess.
I feel like it would hit more if we had more time with these characters. What was Ryo’s reaction to learning that he was Satan and that everything he knew was a lie? What was the nature of his relationship with Psycho Jenny? What were Ryo’s actual motivations beyond “destroying humanity”.
If Ryo’s goals were more fleshed out, than the irony of him accomplishing his goals at the cost of the one thing that truly mattered to him would hit much harder.
This is definitely a story which you’re supposed to feel, not understand, but I don’t think I felt everything the show wanted me to feel.
Another victim of the quick pacing is a lack of atmosphere. Now, the show does have a few sequences with some fantastic, otherworldly atmosphere, like the beginning. However, there are many times when it would be nice if the story could slow down a bit and let us enjoy the imagery.
The lack of atmosphere in the final episode is also a result of how needlessly complex the show can be sometimes. A lot of lore is thrown into our face in that episode, as well as a lot of character backstory and insight. A lot also happens in that 25 minutes. It would be nice if we got time to digest what was happening.
I feel like I need to stop, because it seems like I dislike this show, but, there were times when I was on its wavelength.
There is some beautiful and horrific imagery in here. I love Satan’s design, and I feel like it actually works with the minimalist artsyle.
A lot of the scenes showing nuclear war in the last episode were pretty breathtaking, as the show is pretty great at showing scale and grandiosity. The use of filters really helps to sell the effect. The flashbacks to Ryo and Akira’s childhood also had an awesome juxtaposition, with these brightly colored childhood memories that use these long shots clashing with the dark and frantically edited present.
There are also many scenes of brutality earlier in the series that are legitimately pretty shocking, mainly the massacre at the track meet.
This is a series that has a lot going for it, but it ultimately stumbles at the finish line, ending up seeming more like an ant by the feet of the stories that the manga inspired.
However, they say the book is always better, so I’ll be sure to check it out.

yeah no fr you get it. i notice so many little things that just feel weird when games try to be too realistic. like modern fallout games? you immediately notice when character's mouths or animations are wonky. tbh i play far too few super-realistic-games to really point out any ones i have flaws with but like!
final fantasy! 15 is pretty realistic but still keeps that anime vibe. prompto's hair is a little silly but hey, its ff! and it fits in the world and doesn't feel off. kh? entirely silly. even in kingdom hearts 3 where there's a lot more like "high-def" textures and stuff, all the characters are so silly and anime-esque that it still just works.
hell i sometimes think ts2 has more polish and personality than ts4, and that came out in approx 2004...
idk man i love my silly anime games and my clunky/chunky/low-poly graphics. realism is fun as are pretty graphics but man. i can look past shitty graphics if the story and characters are fun and i have a reason to care. but if the graphics are slowing my device down and i can barely play? that's just a pain.
on that note why are assassin's creed games so fucking big. i had to dl over 100gb for ac: valhalla awhile ago. is this even necessary anymore...? ngl i like ac4's graphics more than the more modern games sometimes...
sorry im a little passionate abt games. oopsies. ily corks
No, but exactly, that's why i brought up ff. It has a dash of realism to it, but the charas look so stylised in the anime way despite that, that flaws don't jump out as much as they do in the RE engine, to me. I very much remember wonky hair being a thing despite the fact that i played one (1) 3D final fantasy entry, and that was years ago, but it never struck me as odd, because... it was stylised, and it could get explained as part of the style. When you aim for photorealism, even the most minor flaw registers as - a flaw, cannot be explained by saying "it's stylised".
And, yeah, real. I can't tell you for Valhalla or Odyssey - I don't own them and don't really have an urge to get them either (not in an elitist "it's not a proper ac game", but just a bit of a side-eyeing "i play ac for certain reasons, and odyssey and valhalla took a path that removed those reasons"), but from what I hear they have a fuckton of content. I think Origins also took so much to download, it was ridiculous.
(And same tho. I made tumblr bc i wanted to be insane ab elder scrolls somewhere, enstars just kinda took over. But i've always been a video game freak)

Fate and Phantasms #299: Ibuki Douji
Tumblr media
Today on Fate and Phantasms we are creating the great god of Mt. Ooe, Ibuki-Douji! In this build, she is a Rune Knight Fighter to properly appreciate her stature, as well as a Storm Sorcerer to make her a living force of nature. Ibuki almost hits as hard as the Orochi she can summon.
You can examine her character sheet here, or her build breakdown below the cut!
Next up: If I had a nickel for every snake-based goddess that made Rex feel funny I would have three nickels. That is not a lot, but it’s weird how it’s happened twice in a row.
Race and Background
We had quite a bit of trouble deciding on Ibuki-Douji’s race, which is an interesting experience for us. We decided against Tiefling because her skillset is more water-based than fire, and Aasimar was also in the running due to her godly origins. In the end, we went with Yuan-Ti Pureblood, specifically the version from Volo’s Guide to Monsters. She is famously friendly with the Orochi, and if you are going to build a god it pays to be a little overpowered. If the issue is forced, the more modern take on the race is also acceptable.
As a Yuan-Ti Pureblood, she gains +2 Charisma and +1 Strength thanks to Tasha’s customizable races. She also gains 60 feet of Darkvision, and her Innate Spellcasting lets her cast Poison Spray and Animal Friendship an unlimited amount per day, though the latter can only affect snakes. At third level you can also cast Suggestion once per day, and all these spells use your Charisma to cast. Speaking of spells, you have advantage on all saves against magic, and are immune to poison, both the damage type and the condition.
I admit we have not gotten far enough into Heian-Kyo to understand Ibuki’s exact point of origin, but our general understanding is Shuten is hiding out on her mountain and gained otherworldly power, and that would make her a Hermit, giving her proficiency in Medicine and Religion.
Ability Scores
Ibuki’s strongest point is, appropriately, her Strength. at a certain point she just throws away her sword entirely and starts beating people to death with a snake skeleton larger than most people. Definitely a “girlboss” moment. Very empowering. Second is her Charisma. She gains power from divinity, but specifically her own divinity. But not in the same way Divine Soul Sorcerers do, where their only mechanical identity is “Sorcerer with Healing”. Anyways, we’re getting off topic. Third is her Dexterity. She does not fight in a lot of armor. In fact, it would be more accurate to say she fights in no armor whatsoever. She barely fights in clothes. Her Constitution is also above average, as gods typically aren’t known for dying easily. This does mean her Wisdom is rather low, but she is easily influenced and can even become a berserker, so it is appropriate. Finally, we’re dumping Intelligence. From what I gather Shuten doesn’t like letting you out that often.
Class Levels
1. Fighter 1: at level one you get your Great Weapon Fighting Style, which means you can re-roll 1s and 2s on damage dice for two-handed weapons. we’ll be adding quite a few damage dice to your two-handed weapons by the time this build is done, so that’ll be super helpful. you also gain a Second Wind for a little bit of healing, as a treat.
you also get proficiency with Strength and Constitution saves for better concentration, Athletics to make you even stronger, and Intimidation because you’re literally a demon god. even if your charisma was dogwater you’d still be intimidating.
2. Fighter 2: second level fighters can use an Action Surge once per short rest for an extra action in a turn, no strings attached. this action can be used for multiple attacks, another levelled spell, literally anything you could fit in a normal action. it’s like Quickened Spell, but significantly better.
3. Fighter 3: at third level you get your martial archetype, Rune Knight. this lets you activate your Giant Might as a bonus action proficiency times per day, turning you into a Large creature for up to a minute if you have space. during that time you have advantage on strength checks and saves, and once a turn your weapon attacks deal an extra d6 of damage, like diet rage. this is how you go from your little babby form up to that Raita-drawn-twice-as-large-as-Guda form.
you also get the Rune Carver feat, letting you carve designs into a weapon or armor or piece of jewelry, y’know the kind of stuff you’d think would have runes on ‘em. you can put one of each kind you know on an item at the end of a long rest, and they stay magical until your next long rest, giving you passive buffs while carrying them around. you can also invoke runes- usually as a bonus action- once per short rest for an extra bonus. for example, the Fire Rune gives you double proficiency with tool checks, but the reason we’re taking it is its invocation. as part of the same action you hit someone with a weapon attack, you can invoke the fire rune to summon some burning snake heads to restrain them if they fail a strength save. this lasts a minute, and they take damage and can retake the save at the end of each of their turns.
our second rune right now is the Frost Rune, giving you advantage on Animal Handling and Intimidation checks. you were already good with snakes and good at scaring people, but now you’re better. you can invoke the rune for a +2 bonus on all strength and constitution checks. sadly, we can’t really invest too much into constitution as a gish, but we’ll do what we can.
4. Fighter 4: use your first Ability Score Improvement to bump up your Strength. you hit hard, it’s kind of your thing.
5. Fighter 5: speaking of hitting hard, now you do it twice as often with your Extra Attack each action.
6. Sorcerer 1: now that we’re set on physicality for a hot second, let’s pop over to Storm sorcerer. yeah yeah you’re a Wind Speaker, you know Primordial, but the real fun is Tempestuous Magic. if you plan on casting a levelled spell with your action, you can use your bonus action before or after it to fly up to ten feet away without provoking attacks. it’s a discount version of the little cloud thing she does.
and of course, if you’re gonna use Tempestuous Magic you’re gonna need some Spells to cast using your Charisma. for cantrips, pick up Booming Blade and Sword Burst to hit even harder than before, and grab Gust for even more windiness. Message is just always pretty useful, it’s your standard Chaldea communicator. for levelled spells, Mage Armor will help your low AC even when you’re not wearing much, and Fog Cloud completes the aesthetic of your magic. it gives you a big enough cloud to hide in that even your giant self can fit!
7. Sorcerer 2: at second level you become a Font of Magic, giving you sorcery points equal to your level at the end of each long rest. you can convert points to slots or slots to point, but you can’t have more points than you started with. they’ll get more interesting next level, I swear.
for your spell, grab Burning Hands for a little Orochi action right away. well, not right away, we’re at level 7. still, faster than the main spell we’re grabbing for Orochi.
8. Sorcerer 3: at third level of sorcerer you can use those sorcery points from earlier on Metamagic options, customizing your spells as you cast them. with Subtle spells, you can cast them without vocal or somatic components, so you can now cast spells while holding your big fuckoff swords. meanwhile an Extended spell has double the duration so you don’t burn through spell slots as fast.
if you’re still not strong, tough, or fast enough, grab Enhance Ability for advantage on one kind of ability check for up to a minute.
9. Sorcerer 4: use this next ASI to grab the Slasher feat to spice up your swords even more. that rounds up your Dexterity for a better AC. the feat also lets you reduce the speed of whatever you hit by 10 feet for a round, and your critical slashing hits force disadvantage on all their attacks that round.
for spells, grab blade ward to turn that diet rage into… zero sugar rage? i think? its still not 100% ragealicious, but it’s a lil closer with the damage resistances. also, dragon’s breath. when we summon orochi later it’ll already have fire breath, but now you can turn any snake into orochi!
10. sorcerer 5: fifth level sorcs can spend their points on magical guidance to re-roll a failed skill check. you can also cast third level spells like fly! now we’ve got a full-length flight for ya!
11. fighter 6: with the basics of magic covered, lets head back to fighter to make more heads roll! at level six you get another asi which we’re using to grab the great weapon master feat! now whenever you score a crit or kill a creature with a melee weapon, you can make a bonus action attack, and that’s not all! whenever you attack with a heavy weapon you can take a -5 hit to the attack roll for a +10 to the damage! dont wanna put too fine a point on this, but ibuki’s rlly good with a sword. or a snake corpse. that’s a heavy weapon, right?
12. fighter 7: at seventh level you get a runic shield, letting you protect your buddies as a reaction proficiency times a day! you can force whoever is attacking to re-roll the d20 and use the new roll.
speaking of runes, now that you’re level 7 u can use the hill rune! the normal stuff is just poison resistance, which doesn’t really help you, but you can invoke the rune for resistance against bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage for 1 minute! so now it’s a… low-cal rage? i think.
13. fighter 8: use this asi to bump up your constitution for more health and more concentration! the one downside of multiclassing with casters is their terrible hit dice.
14. fighter 9: ninth level fighters are indomitable, so now you can re-roll a failed saving throw once a day! use it wisely!
15. fighter 10: at tenth level, your great stature gives you up to a foot in extra height (ibuki be biiiig) and your deal an extra d8 of damage each turn instead of a d6! you also get another rune, and you might as well grab a storm rune. you get advantage on arcana checks and you can’t be surprised normally, and you can invoke it to get all godly for a minute- whenever you or another creature makes a check, save, or attack roll, you can react to give that roll advantage or disadvantage. things just go right for gods. mostly. sometimes. okay honestly being a god kinda sucks unless you’re monotheistic.
16. fighter 11: eleventh level fighters get another extra attack! now you got three attacks in an action, and up to 7 per turn! most people would kill for that kind of action economy, and you have!
17. sorcerer 6: a sixth level storm sorcerer knows the heart of the storm, giving you resistance to thunder and lightning damage. on top of that, any spells you cast that deal that damage makes you explode, dealing damage to creatures you wanna hurt nearby. we don’t use that a lot, but your dragony spells are pretty flexible, so we won’t tell if you won’t!
you’re also a storm guide, so you can stop the rain nearby or control the direction the wind is blowing. it’s mostly flavor, but it can be useful!
oh right, we don’t need much til level 20, so let’s grab thunder step for extra mobility and explosions. you teleport, you explode wherever you left and you can even explode where you’re going!
18. sorcerer 7: seventh level sorcerers get fourth level spells like storm sphere! i know your np probably isn’t totally literal, but now you can make a storm anyway, woo.
19. sorcerer 8: use your last asi to be a tough guy for 38 extra hp now and 2 more next level. like i said, sorcerers suck at not dying, so try to suck less.
annoyingly sorcerers can’t bestow curses, so we’re gonna grab vampiric touch for those unclean fingers of yours. you can make a melee attack against a creature, dealing necrotic damage if you hit and regaining half that in hp, then for a minute afterwards you can keep making attacks as an action.
20. sorcerer 9: our last level is for fifth level spells! with summon draconic spirit, you can make a dragon show up for up to an hour. orochi’s probably chromatic, but you can pick gem or metallic if you really want. it takes its turn right after yours, and you can command it without spending a bonus action or anything.
it’s only got 50 hp which is bad for level 20, but it’s flashy and it gives you resistance to whatever its breath weapon is.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
giant lady! well yeah, but more specifically giant lady with giant fucking sword. Great Weapon Master is a good feat, and while you don’t have a way to ensure you get advantage to take full. well, advantage. of it, good shit is still good shit. with seven attacks you can dish out 133 damage before we even account for any dice in your attacks. dice that you can re-roll for better damage thanks to Great Weapon Fighting.
you’ve also got a pretty solid defense. your AC’s nothing to write home about, but you’ve got resistances and immunities up the wazoo. you are either immune or resistant to poison, thunder, and lightning permanently, can get resistance to physical damage types for a decent amount of time per short rest, and if you know you’re going up against an element you’re not resisting yet, you can summon a dragon and just leave him out of the fight to get an element of your choice too.
you’re also great at being consistent in just about everything. you can give yourself advantage on an important attack, re-roll a failed skill check or save, can’t be surprised, and have advantage on most of the skills you focus on.
Cons:
your even if you’ve got defenses to get around it, having a bad AC is still rough. though you’re plenty strong enough to just grab platemail or something if you really want.
your spells aren’t strong since we didn’t touch on charisma that much, so sword burst, burning hands, and dragon’s breath aren’t the greatest options. a lot of your spells don’t care about charisma though, so it’s not a huge issue. and even when it is you can give them disadvantage on their saves…
…you’re too tall? yeah look this is a pretty good build, the only real downside is not packing your own hea- wait no you’ve got vampiric touch. yeah this sheer heart attack has no weaknesses.

Hello, I hope this isn't too random/ rude, but I have a question. What's it like to be an illustrator without studying illustration in university? Do you think it's an obstacle or does it not matter at all? Do you wish you had studied it in school? I've been thinking about my future a lot and it's so difficult to find information about this field. Anyway I love your illustration work! I'd be happy to get any answer you wanna give me
It is not random or rude no worries, I'm happy to reply. (tho expect typos because english is not my first language and it's the end of the work day and i'm too tired to re read what i write)
Just a little context, the things I will say here are about my own experience as a woman that was born and raised in Chile, south america and born into a low income family.
So short answer is: it doesn't matter at all. You can have whatever profession and become and illustrator.
Longer answer: You must be strategic and be really passionate because there are a lot of things to be learned and sacrifices to be made to make things happen.
Hell, I haven't even "made it" myself yet, I am just at a more advanced point but I'm not like super economically comfortable or even known in the illustration community.
Anyways, I decided to study strategic design because i knew my context and i knew i needed a degree to be "someone" and advance in my life, however i'm also very stubborn and i'm the type of person who will follow her dreams and do whatever she wants! so it should be something that would give me tools for both my dreams and life itself (jobs and such)
If you're from a first world country you probably have the option to go to schools of animation or illustration that are pretty good and can get you faster on the industries you're interested. That was my dream to be honest i wanted to study animation, but here there aren't many (or any) really good schools that teach contemporary or entertaiment arts, it's all very old and around the "bellas artes" kind of thing. That wasn't my thing so if I'm going to get into debt to study I thought, hey at least design will give me tools that can help me read my goals and also get to know interesting people. so that's what i chose.
BUT in design you don't draw at all, I knew it, and I knew what my end goal was: being an illustrator. So from day one in university I was always trying to draw and put in illustrations into my projects. most of my teachers hated that i did that but i did it anyways. others were super cool about it and supported me, you just have to know why you do things and not care that much lol
I said something the other day on twitter (i'll add that at the end of this) that applies to this because in the end i knew i needed certain things to be "successful" or even getting into the scene:
I needed to be REALLY good at drawing, like having your style, something to say, having a wide range of habilities that would make people ccome to me when they wanted to say their stories
I needed to be very disciplined because i must find spaces when i'm not studying or working and drawing (for this, always drawing things you like is key lol)
i needed to be proactive and create my own projects and go to conventions and get past my anxiety and not having a mentor or guide.
network, this is the hardest for me but i realized networking didnt need to be a souless thing, in my case it just meant i tried my best to get to know my peers and other artists and be friendly even if we werent FRIENDS, if we're friendly and cool enough we will recommend each other for jobs.
YEAH so to do naother short answer: Yeah i wished i had had the opportunity to go to a cool school like calarts or gobelins etcetc but that wasnt my reality so no i do not regret my choice because it was the best in the context i was in, i wouldnt worry too much about it either because in the end even you've a degree but suckass at drawing or you're just not someone who knows what they need you to know you won't get hired.
and yes it is difficult, but i don't think anyone expects illustration and arts to be an easy career, i've had my breakdowns (manyyyy) and it's ok to do other things and expand your possibilities but it's also what i'm passionate and it has made me live things i wouldnt otherwise so no ragrets.
just be proactive, draw a lot, draw more, learn things that are useful for the specific field you're interested in (i'd say that choosing something to be your main focus helps, like children books story boarding etc, so you can create a good portfolio) and get in touch with people who work in these things you're interested, make friends, learn from them...
yeah! and good luck, it's all about that shonen protagonist mentality, never give up!!!
i hope this helps i know i'm a mess when writing these replies lol

so i finally finished chapter 0 and if the rest of the cases are going to be like this i low key wanna die
the mystery labyrinth is sooooooo long???? at first glance it looks super cool but then you realize youre just making yuma walk down a long corridor while him and shinigami talk. And he cant even run any faster
and like, how many modes/mini games are there???? the reasoning death match yeah, okay valid. interesting to see yuma literally dodging the verbal assaults, i like the sword over bullets but whatever
then you chose between door options, not sure if theres a DR equivalent of that but okay, but must we see yuma getting slashed every single time
then theres the “reinvestigate the mind crime scene” like uhhhhh sure. I personally hate these kinds of “lets replicate the crime scene” types (AAI Kay’s Little Thief) because its like, how Valid are these clues anyway if youre physically not there
then theres the minecart which is mind logic, fine, i guess
shinigami beach barrel is... a better version of hangmans gambit but not too much better. I like her eye beams.
GOD gami is.... the idea is funny but iunno why we needed it (their version of the bullet time battle i think?)
AND WE STILL RECREATE THE CRIME IN A COMIC FORM but its in the death note book. ????????? like i get that the wrap up is is necessary but was the comic book format the only way? The stills are very nice though but it loses the charm from DR where it had a different overall style from the rest of the game
like my take away from this first case (its not even the first case its case 0 and now im on the prologue???????) is the graphics are nice but that labyrinth went on for waaaay too long and i dont know if the dialogue is just not for me anymore but it just being yuma and gami is already tiring.
Theres a lot of just talking sequences and yeah in the end of the day its supposed to be a little more than a visual novel but it just feels so slow sometimes?
rip those detectives in the first case, what a waste of characters. i mean, maybe we will re open the case or see mentions of them later but iunno, somehow doubt
Okay so i had already deduced Zilch as the culprit, knowing he used Aphex’s body as a duplicate. (Nice call back to DR1-5). I knew Car 1 and 5 were swapped but I guess I didn’t understand the world enough because of the existence of Shinigami and the “Fortes” so I was under the impression that Zilch’s real Forte was to make things swap and he was lying about the animals. The fact that they explained the whole train car swap logically made me feel like i was thinking too far like a professor layton mystery lmfao.
My dumb ass did not remember the names of the characters so i was having a ball during the minecart mind logic part
anyway on to the prologue, i know as hell that yakou is a fan favorite. everybody loves a scruffy gintoki voiced by koyasu. (not me, but i know ppl like older 20s/young 30s year old “dads”)

Thoughts on Trigun Stampede
I can see why this new (reboot-retelling-reimagining-prequel?) show may be divisive for fans of the OG ‘98 show. But for me it’s an improvement on the ‘98 version in a lot of ways (not all ways, but many).
The OG anime was the VERY FIRST anime I ever saw besides a few episodes of Sailor Moon or Pokémon that I may have caught while babysitting. I saw it in high school (2003-ish?) after a friend of mine cos-played Vash for an anime convention.
While I really enjoyed the show (specifically Vash’s arc and character), there was LOTS I didn’t like and it informed my hot-and-cold opinions on anime for a long time.
I adored Vash; I loved the world building of the planet and concept of the PLANTS; I really loved the dynamic between the 4 main protagonists. The music was bad ass. The thematic questions of when is it okay to choose who lives and dies (and whether humanity deserves to be saved) were excellently developed, and the Christian imagery was *chefs kiss*
But the show irritated me in a lot of ways too. I hated what I dubbed ‘face-changing’ when the animation style would shift so suddenly from serious to exaggerated. I found the character design of most of the villains (and Milly if I’m being honest-not her character, her design) to be largely ugly. The animation was stilted and the frame rates were sooooo low even in big fight scenes. And Knives I felt was under-utilized as a villain and his conclusion a bit rushed.
I re-watched the OG before I started watching Trigun Stampede and my opinion stayed pretty much the same (with the added exception that I found Vash’s objectification of women- facade or no- early in the show to not fit tonally with his overall character and was a bit squicky).
But now I’m watching the NEW version and….I’m SUPER digging it. Almost ALL of the things that I disliked about the 98 version have been removed or improved upon and MOST of the things I liked have remained or been updated.
The story has less filler overall. One COULD argue that it is ‘rushed’ but with the announcement of a second season, I really don’t feel like things from before have been removed, just delayed until a later part of the story. The show is more tonally consistent throughout, something I found jarring in the OG.
I feel like the villains, especially Knives, are legitimately threatening, and in some cases are given sympathetic backstories which made them more fleshed out. I appreciated, for instance, Vash being given a history with Monev/Rollo. It made that fight more meaningful since they had a connection to each-other beyond ‘I’ve been told to kill you’.
I still really enjoy Wolfwood as a character here, and am enjoying seeing more of his past. His relationship with Vash is still extremely gripping/endearing. Love the use of Needle-Noggin again.
I think they’ve done something smart with Meryl by giving her development beyond learning to love Vash. She starts out naive here, which is NOT how she is in the OG, but she’s still as driven. I think by shifting her development over 2 seasons and almost treating this season as her ‘backstory’ she’ll be more interesting and three-dimensional for it by the time the show concludes. Not that I disliked her in the original, I just found her more bland than Vash, Wolfwood, and even Milly, as she was a more static character.
Let’s talk about ANIMATION. As stated above, I have no nostalgia for the animation of the original. I found the face-changing off-putting, the secondary character and villain design outside of the main protagonists to be hard to even look at (I’m not including Vash, Wolfwood, Legato, Knives here as they all have excellent and unique designs) and the actual quality to be cheap and stilted.
While I DO think that the OG hand-drawn animation could be a bit more unique and expressive at times in its shadows and lighting (think Vash and his blue glowing eyes in silhouette), this updated CGI animation has almost everything else in its favour for me. No face-changing or off-model characters! Clean, crisp lines! Dynamic and fast-paced movement! Clear and unique characteristics coming across in weight and mass and angles! Beautiful set dressing! Fantastic colours everywhere! Energetic camera tracking! Jacket!
I will say that one thing I keep going back to as something the OG does slightly better is Vash himself. I think he’s just a tad TOO soft-spoken in this version and his comedic and goofy facade has been lost a bit. He’s still fundamentally the same person as the original and he’s so engaging and sympathetic as a character- that remains the same if not better- but I feel his ‘spark’ may have been lost a bit in the re-telling. I’m glad they kept his original voice actor for the update, and I like his more mature performance here.
I’m of two minds on his redesign as well. Part of me loves the new arm and jacket and fluffy hair, and part of me wishes he had a bit more ‘presence’ on screen. He seems…smaller, somehow? His facial expressions are just right, though! He has that ‘older-than-they-look' softness about him that really comes across in his eyes and voice. I’m excited to see if season two continues to bring back more elements of the original character (sleeker, more inconspicuous arm design, and buttoned up coat, for instance).
Overall I’ve enjoyed revisiting Trigun in general, and I’m happy to have a production that has taken something that I loved but saw as flawed, and polished it up a bit and made it shiny and new.
9/10 would recommend.

Contemporary Animation Research #2 -
vimeo
Noëlite Leclère - The Corridor of a Thousand Doors
A really interesting short film that is created to emulate a 1990s PS1 analog horror aesthetic. The combination of 3D low-res backgrounds and hand drawn animation is really interesting - as well as the addition of the opening title sequence and the 'game over' scene.
vimeo
Goxe Armand - No Date Tonight
A really left-field short film about a girl's travels through a strange town. The pacing, art style and sound design is really interesting - and while the film doesn't really do that much, it really is able to convey both a strong story and vibe.
vimeo
Felipe Bolivar lipeli - Encore Tiède
Beautifully animated, somewhat surrealist animation that employs really interesting character designs, dialogue, sound design and colour choices.
vimeo
vimeo
Lucas Bascans - Laser Moon & Soleil sur oeuf
While both are extremely different to eachother, these films by Lucas Bascans are extremely inspirational. The first employs this strange mix of hand-drawn animation and real life imagery - giving it a strange surrealist collage feel. The second I'm pretty sure is 3D rendered, employing flat colours on low poly models.
youtube
Marie Derambure - Le rêve polyphonique de Racine et Rossignol
Really interesting compositing to make the story feel as though it came straight from the pages of a manga.
youtube
Yoann Roussin & Ylang Lebot (PULPE) - Slice
Clean, beautiful backgrounds, character designs and amazing sound design / music.
youtube
Worthikids - Captain Yajima
A really interesting short film that absolutely nails the 1970s/1980s sci-fi tv show feel. I'm pretty sure it was animated in blender, which is crazy considering how much it feels like a work of clay-mation
youtube
SelectStation - WetSocks 2004
Super mysterious and intriguing animation, almost presented in a trailer like format for a Love-de-lic feeling game. While it doesn't really spell out a story to you (being more so just a taster of something bigger), the feeling it wants to convey is there from the very first second.

Ridi, I am so sorry that I just saw your new fic! I read it as soon as possible - with many breaks because christ my heartstrings are going to break soon when your not carefull! - and I really regret forgetting my ao3 login, but I'll tell you what I love about this one here, I suppose.
Remus folds the newspaper in half, watches the last of his milk marbling his tea for a moment, before stirring it in (white mug, yellow-and-black Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. logo—Sirius found it in a charity shop, presented him with it back in Talgarth: look—wolves, Moony, wolves!). There’s not quite enough, so it’s still a deep, dirty brown; the colour of tobacco. His shower this morning ran cold.
This is such a perfect picture for the quiet misery that eminates from r in this fic, like fog eminates from the sea, I want to hug him. And the wolves! And s getting him a mug!
The part of Remus he keeps muzzled often considers himself lucky that his mother will never have to bury him.
God, oh god. I might like rs grief in this more than anything else.
A Welsh women calls him annwyl when he offers her his seat on the one-seven-seven bus to Peckham. It dislodges something important, and when he gets off at his stop, he starts to cry.
This reminds me so much of when someone called me "deern" (just "young lady" in low german, does not sound like the animal in English) after my grandpa died and I started bawling right that second.
R comparing s to paintings is such gay nerd behaviour I am going to get sick if I dwell on it for too long. But also r 🤝 me re: comparing our crushes to paintings.
I loved the friendships between the four of them so much!!!!! And the coin thing for j and s?? Just- won der full!!!!
And r feeling so awfull about his crush/being gay is so heartbreaking (and perfect. Having a crush on your friend is so hard)
R hating apperition is also wonderfull.
And well, now I have to ask how do you pronounce remus without enlonging the E?
R and s being from completly diffrent worlds is shown in so many wonderfull little details I just- the household magic!!!
This is so disjointed - sorry for that!! I love your writing style do much! It's subtile in a very charming way! And you have a way of weaving in detailes without losing focus that's very impressive.
agnes omg hi love hello!! not at all this is such a. sweet message to open my inbox to my god!! i'm so glad you liked it!! i think you definitely picked out the sort of. quiet little misery he carries about with him while muddling along in this one :-) both for s and for his mum! i really enjoyed writing the bits about his mum honestly they were super fun in a sad sort of way and just not something i get to write about an awful lot (<- says guy who has full autonomy over what they write). he is SUCH a little freak about describing s also i. got a ton of art books for christmas and i found id keep trying to describe him and a specific image id seen in one of them would come to mind so i just thought hm okay. guess that's what he'll do. i feel like you mentioned quite a few of my little. favourite bits i had when i was writing like the little details and objects which are honestly my favourite things to put in (in my planning document i'll have a plan for a scene which will literally just say something like: BIKE GREASE or TATTOO) which i could probably talk about for far too long about but just!! thank you so much bab this is so lovely :-))

Movies I watched this Week #105 (Week 1 of year # 3):
🍿
4 Restaurant films + 3 with John Leguizamo:
🍿 As an ex-chef and as a person who likes to eat, I was looking forward to seeing the new conceptual thriller The menu. Unfortunately, it wasn’t satisfying. As a satire of the 1% foodie class, ‘Triangle of Sadness’ was sharper. As mouth-watering Food Porn a-la David Gelb, (who actually advised the director with hi-rez hi-end fine dining creations), it fell flat. As a wink & nod to Alinea Restaurant’s choreographed tabletop dessert, well, I wish I was able to enjoy it in Chicago instead. Otherwise, like the ostentatious dishes, it felt pretentious and vacuous. Leguizamo plays a washed up movie star. 6/10.
🍿 What ‘the menu’ wished it was, was Jon Favreau‘s sweet Chef, about a father and his 10 year old son who bond on a gastronomic cross country trip in a food truck called The Boss ‘El Jefe’. This was a charming movie that Adora & I watched many times. I believe that as times goes by, this will end up being considered as one of the best food-centric films, up there with Tampopo, Ratatouille, Babette’s Feast, Etc. Leguizamo played the line cook Martin, cooling his balls with corn starch. 9/10.
🍿 Lobster Soup, another slow, enchanting documentary from Iceland. It tells of Bryggjan, a small cafe in a tiny fishing town and the few locals who’s been gathering there for 40 years. The place had slowly become the cultural center of the town. Surprisingly, it was made by a Spanish director. 9/10.
🍿 I never heard of Dinner Rush before, even though it got good reviews when it came out in 2000, and was favorably-compared to other food-porn movies of the past. That Bob Giraldi, the director, was a NYC restaurateur himself, helped the authenticity of the kitchen drama (even though I’ll argue there were ‘too many cooks’). The background story is about some mafia guys trying to muscle in on Danny Aiello, the owner of the restaurant. Vivian Wu played a waitress who looked notably like AOC.
🍿 “… If I die, I’m going to do it stoned, and smiling in my bed…”
Repeated re-watch, American Ultra, a clever action-comedy about an artistic stoner, who’s actually a dormant Ultra super-agent. Jesse Eisenberg is the last person you’d expect to play a ruthless killing machine, so his love for girlfriend Kristen Stewart is the key to this innovative story. Leguizamo played “Rose”, his crazed drug dealer. To be watched while stoned.
🍿
Coraline, after Neil Gaiman’s Gothic dark story for kids. (Clip Above). A nightmarish vision of parallel world discovered by a lonely girl with too-busy parents. I can see why Adora had become obsessed with this story as of yet. Even her accent is similar to Coraline. The stop-motion animation was stupendous too. My favorite discovery of the week.
🍿
So after Coraline, I returned to the earlier Haunted House fantasy, Tim Burton’s Gothic comedy Beetlejuice. Weird and original Disnyfied vision of the after-life. With young Winona Rider and Dick Cavett. The Harry Belafonte’s Banana Boat scene. 4/10.
🍿
3 Titanic-adjacent films:
🍿 James Cameron’s masterful Titanic, first re-watch in 20+ years. Ambitious myth-making saga combining epic romance and maritime disaster. Still gripping suspense, pathos & thrills, played luxuriously with Enya-styled score, and exact skills. 3 hours and 14 minutes long, it is divided into two perfect halves: the first half is building the love, and at 1:38:00 they hit the iceberg. With a continual final shot. 9/10.
🍿 Cameron’s very first short film, Xenogenesis, financed with $20,000 from a local dentist (who backed out after seeing the rushes). An experimental indie sci-fi with the seed concept for Terminator. Very badly done, and it didn’t help that the YouTube copy is very low-quality. 1/10.
🍿 Gloria Stuart was 87 when she played the old Rose in Titanic. She was 23 when she starred in The Invisible Man, James Whale’s brilliant horror classic. 7/10.
🍿
Immersion, a slow, ominous thriller from Chile. A father takes his two grown daughters sailing on a lake. He sees a sinking boat, but because the far-away occupants look 'suspicious’, he turns a blind eye to them and hurries away. The uneasy, suspenseful tragedy that follow reminded me of ‘Straw dogs’, even though there was no violence or assaults present, or a 2021 version of Polanski’s ‘Knife in the water’.
Recommended - but not for me: These types of films fill me with too much anxiety.
🍿
3 delightful shorts:
🍿 Jon Lefkovitz’s In perfect unison - where two characters do or say the same thing at the same time. A supercut using 100+ moments throughout film and television history, set to the tune of TV on the Radio's "Second Song".
🍿 Out of sight, a very cute story in Studio Ghibli style that doesn’t ever mention that the little girl is blind.
🍿 “...Our lower classes are desperately trying to escape the meteor through discount time travel...”
World of tomorrow, still my favorite science fiction film of all times, Genius animator Don Hertzfeldt’s Oscar nominated mind-bending, surreal masterpiece, “One of the greatest short films in the history of movies”. Free to re-watch on YouTube. 10/10.
🍿
In the recent My Next Guest with David Letterman he flew to Kiev and interviewed Volodymyr Zelenskyy at an underground station, in front of a small audience. It’s moving and tragic.
Can’t forget that Zelenskyy came first to prominence on live TV when he played the piano with his pecker.
🍿
Never heard of Andrew Callaghan, a 25-Year-old YouTube ‘Gonzo Journalist’, who just released This Place Rules, a wild documentary about the events leading to the January 6th insurrection attempt. He traveled around the country in his own RV, interviewing the craziest nuts and out-there Nazis, Alex Jones wannabees, toothless soothsayers, foreskin conspirators, and a bunch of Q-anon fanatics as they prepare themselves for the fascist revolution. Unsettling.
🍿
Adam McKay’s first film, Anchorman, a loud, low-brow and obnoxious ‘comedy’, with the always-insufferable Will Ferrell. Old-fashioned sexism geared for young teenage males made this a big hit. One point for coining the phrase ‘That escalated quickly’. 2/10.
🍿
Throw-back to the art project:
Adora on the Titanic.

3/3-PCW Extreme Political TV
Tumblr media
Political Championship Wrestling Extreme Political TV Sunday March 4th, 2024 PCW Arena Washington, DC
Announcers: ‘The Voice of PCW’ Johnny Suave AGE: 50 / HT: 5’ 11” WT: 195 HOME: Philadelphia, PA HAIR: Brown / STYLE: Like Ronnie Dunn / FACE: Goatee DRESS: Brown suit without tie
Colleen Crowder of ‘That Big New York Newspaper that Pushes Narrative as News’ AGE: 38 / HT: 5’ 5” WT: 142 HOME: New York City, NY HAIR: Black / STYLE: Curly / FACE:Narrow face with rounded jaw, turned-up nose, faint freckles, and thin lips. Bulging blue eyes, thin eyebrows. DRESS: Black pants suit
Tuesday Night at Michigan Madness in Grand Ledge, Michigan: Trump vs. Haley The raucous energy of the PCW Extreme Political TV audience hits a fever pitch as the screen flickers to life, showing the grainy footage from Michigan Madness from Grand Ledge, Michigan. The unmistakable figure of Donald Trump, his hair a golden coif even in the low-res video, stands triumphant amidst the cacophony of jeers and cheers. With the precision of a practiced showman, he swings a kendo stick with a vindictive crack against the already faltering Nikki Haley. Her resilience wanes; she’s a cornered political animal in the ring, but even her grit has limits against Trump’s relentless assault.
“Holy Crap!” Johnny Suave’s voice pierces through the uproar as Trump meticulously sets up the table, positioning it like a sacrificial altar. He hoists Haley up—she’s struggling, but it’s no use. The slam through the wood is definitive, resounding through the arena like a gavel pronouncing judgment. “He hooks the legs… 1… 2… 3,” Suave announces, his voice tinged with disbelief at the ease of Trump’s victory.
“Welcome to tonight’s PCW Extreme Political TV from the PCW Arena in Washington, DC,” Suave greets the viewers at home, his tone shifting to the familiar excitement of prime-time wrestling. Beside him, Colleen Crowder sits with a scowl etched into her features, clearly not impressed with the former President’s win. “Colleen, I have to say, Trump’s dominance tonight was something else.”
“Something else indeed, Johnny,” Colleen retorts sharply and sarcastically, “but let’s talk about a real win. Joe Biden’s victory in Michigan on Tuesday.”
Michigan Madness in Grand Ledge, Michigan: Biden vs. whoever The video clip rolls, showcasing an empty ring where Biden’s opponent should have stood. In a moment of absurdity that only PCW can deliver, an uncommitted, red-shirted jobber right out of a Star Trek episode ambles out, a lamb to the slaughter… but getting some support from the Michigan fans. With the dramatic flare of a certain space-related movie franchise, Biden’s eyes ignite into lasers, zapping the unfortunate soul into oblivion. A quick pin, if you want to call it that, another decisive triumph.
Colleen can’t help but smirk. “That’s how you do it, Johnny. And come November, that Blue Wave is going to sweep right through.”
Opener: Suave nods, allowing the political jab to hang in the air for a moment before moving on. “This Tuesday, it’s Super Tuesday and we will tape next week’s PCW show from Tennessee.  But now, ladies and gentlemen, tonight PCW will be crowning new tag team champions in a four-way elimination match that promises to be nothing short of chaotic.”
The camera pans across the roaring crowd as Suave runs down the lineup: The Deplorables, led by Red Solo Cup Ray McAvay and ‘The Prairie Populist’ William Daniels Bryan, wave their flags high, the very embodiment of the American Heartland Coalition. They stand opposite The Green World Order, ‘Extreme Vegan’ Brock Cole Lee and GreenPete, who brandish recycled signs and wear the determined scowls of the Progressive Alliance.
“Let’s not forget the Sports Entertainment Corporation,” Suave continues, the camera catching Gator Bates and The Alabama Kid cracking their knuckles menacingly, corporate sharks ready to bite. “And last but certainly not least, representing the American Patriots, Starz N. Stripes and ‘The One Man Hollywood A-List’ Stone Chism, looking to add some star-spangled flair to the PCW Tag Team titles!”
In true ECW fashion, the tension is palpable, the stakes sky-high. Each team embodies a facet of the American spirit, from heartland values to progressive ideals, corporate power plays to patriotic fervor. As Suave wraps up the introduction, the crowd’s anticipation becomes a tangible entity, the air thick with the promise of an extreme showdown that will leave the PCW universe forever changed.
Pulp Fiction Video Promos The screen flashes to a montage of slick skyscrapers, the pulse of Wall Street throbbing like the heart of America’s financial power. A ticker tape of stock prices scrolls at the bottom as ‘The Real Wolf of Main Street’ Kirk Walstreit and P.M.C. Banks strut into frame, the very picture of corporate excess with their tailored suits and smug grins.
“Listen up, peons!” Walstreit snarls, his voice dripping with condescension. “We are the bottom line, the portfolio pinnacle of PCW! And our future plans states we’re diversifying our assets with gold… tag team gold!”
Beside him, P.M.C. Banks chimes in, “Market trends say it’s time for a hostile takeover of the tag team division!”
Their manager, Gordon Guyko, steps forward, his face a mask of greed incarnate. “Remember, folks,” he advises with a slick smile, “Greed is good… greed is really, really good.”
***
Cutting away from the glitz of Wall Street, the scene transitions to a lavish Hollywood set. Spotlights dance over ‘Mr. Hollywood’ Kevin Daniels, flanked by The Skanky Rich Bimbos, Paris and Nicole, who pose with practiced pouts. The Pop Songstress Mega-Star Taylor Switt stands beside them, her agreement silent but evident in her steady nod.
Daniels preens before the camera, his teeth a blinding white as he boasts, “The PCW Title? It’s practically begging for some Hollywood flair. Star power… that’s what it needs. And that’s what I bring.”
***
“PCW Originals” Justin Sufferable and ‘No Frills’ Chris Escondido crash the glamorous scene, the camera jolting to the gritty locker room where they stand, sweat and determination etched on their faces.
“PCW blood runs through these veins!” Justin declares, punching his chest. “We’ve been here since day one. We’re not just part of PCW; we ARE PCW! And the title picture won’t be complete without us. I’m not just unbearable… I’m not just intolerable… I am… JUSTIN SUFFERABLE!”
***
The camera shifts again, this time to the scholarly confines of Berkeley, California. Professor McCarthy holds the ‘good book of politically correct things, thoughts, and views’ clutched against his chest like a sacred text. Around him, The Flock nod zealously—Codee Pink, Emily S. List, The Young Jerks, and The Legion of Anti-Fascists—each one a fervent disciple.
“Today’s lesson,” McCarthy intones, “is about adherence to the good book! Charlie Blackwell and all those who defy its teachings must be shouted down!”
***
From the hallowed halls of academia, the feed cuts to a dusty American road. There stands Main Street USA—Mike the Mechanic, Farmer John Deer, Ken Worth-The American Trucker, with ‘The American Girl’ Sarah Mae Smith by their side, looking like a snapshot of Americana itself.
“PCW’s got to understand,” Mike the Mechanic says, wiping grease from his hands, “what happens when gas prices soar and food costs more than it should. PCW needs champions who know that struggle!”
***
“Speaking of champions…” The camera pans to reveal Charlie Blackwell, the Texan holding the PCW Title with pride. He stares down the lens, intensity burning in his eyes.
“American Patriots, Progressive Alliance,” he drawls, “I ain’t hard to find. You want this?” He pats the belt. “Come and get it.”
The montage ends with a back-and-forth of determined faces, each faction poised for battle, each contender ready to lay claim to the PCW Tag Team titles. The screen fades to black, leaving the viewers on the edge of their seats, primed for the chaos to come.
Outside the PCW Arena The camera jostles through a sea of raucous fans outside the PCW Arena, the air thick with anticipation and the scent of spilled beer. The lens focuses on Woodward Bernstein, microphone in hand, as he navigates the growing tension at the entrance.
“Chaos reigns supreme here as ticketless masses clamor for entry,” Bernstein shouts over the din. He pans to Donald Trump, who’s throwing his hands up in exasperation at one door, his face a caricature of indignation as people push against the barriers. “Unbelievable! Total disaster,” Trump bellows, pointing accusingly at the crowd. “They’re trying to sneak in without buying a ticket!”
Swiveling sharply, the camera catches Joe Biden offering a contrasting scene by another door, fewer unticketed patrons mingle there but the same sense of urgency. “Folks,” Biden addresses the few gathered, “I’ve got a plan. A proposal that could end this malarkey if everyone’s on board.”
“Back to you, Colleen,” Bernstein tosses, the feed cutting away just as the blue seat faction erupts in cheers from inside the venue.
MAIN EVENT-PCW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Deplorables vs. The Green World Order vs. The Sports Entertainment Corporation vs. Starz N. Stripes/’The One Man Anti-Hollywood A-List’ Stone Chism Inside, the atmosphere is electric. The ring sits like a gladiatorial stage awaiting its warriors. Ring Announcer Kimber Marshall steps into the spotlight, her voice rising above the cacophony.
“Introducing first, fighting out of the American Heartland Coalition corner… The Deplorables!” Red Solo Cup Ray McAvay and ‘The Prairie Populist’ William Daniels Bryan stride out, their every step met with a mix of jeers and approval.
“Next, representing the Progressive Alliance… The Green World Order!” Extreme Vegan Brock Cole Lee and GreenPete emerge, eliciting a chorus of boos mingled with some scattered applause from the eco-friendly in attendance.
“Coming down from Corporate America, The Sports Entertainment Corporation!” Gator Bates and The Alabama Kid saunter to the ring, their arrogance as palpable as the disdain they inspire from the crowd.
“Finally, Starz N. Stripes and ‘The One Man Hollywood A-List’ Stone Chism, representing the American Patriots!” The duo bursts onto the scene to a hero’s welcome, revving the crowd into a frenzy as they make a beeline for the squared circle.
“Your referee for tonight’s bout, PCW senior referee Corrina Romanov!” As the Russian official steps forward, a ripple of unease spreads through the audience.
“Wait just a minute,” Colleen interjects, her tone laced with suspicion. “Corrina Romanov? After what happened last time Russia meddled in a PCW match? You have got to be kidding me!”
“Colleen, let’s not jump to conclusions,” chides Johnny Suave, ever the voice of reason even amidst the unruly pandemonium.
The raucous PCW arena quivers with anticipation as the bell tolls, its clangor heralding the dance of mayhem. Eight warriors, draped in the vivid tapestries of their allegiances, collide in a chaotic ballet within the squared circle. Muscles taut and eyes ablaze, they exchange blows that echo the thunderous sentiments of their respective factions.
“Business is about to pick up here!” thunders Johnny Suave, his voice cutting through the din like a siren’s call.
“Let’s hope it’s not at the expense of fair play,” chides Colleen Crowder, her skepticism aimed squarely at the Russian referee Corrina Romanov.
Amidst this tumultuous melee, bodies soar over the ropes, expelled from the tempest like political dissidents. The dust settles to reveal an imposing tableau: Starz N. Stripes locked in mortal combat with the zealous ‘Extreme Vegan’ Brock Cole Lee. Their struggle is a microcosm of ideological warfare, each strike a manifesto, every grapple a debate.
“Starz showing the power of patriotic might!” exclaims Suave, his voice tinged with excitement.
“Or maybe just brute force,” retorts Colleen, ever the contrarian.
Gator Bates, the embodiment of corporate ruthlessness, slithers back into the fray for the SEC, his presence tipping the scales. Ray McAvay, the Deplorable everyman, joins the skirmish, his fists writing checks of defiance that his body must cash.
“McAvay’s not going down without a fight!” Suave roars.
“Typical underdog rhetoric,” Colleen snipes, rolling her eyes.
But the narrative twists as Lee, Bates, and Starz suddenly cease their hostilities, turning their collective gaze upon McAvay. What follows is a brutal symphony—a three-on-one beatdown, the soundtrack to which is the groans of the Heartland hero. William Daniels Bryan, ‘The Prairie Populist,’ rushes to aid his partner but finds himself outflanked by The Alabama Kid and GreenPete, who dispatch him with ruthless efficiency.
“McAvay’s in trouble! Is this a conspiracy?” Suave’s voice cracks with concern.
“Or just the harsh reality of politics—and wrestling,” Colleen counters, a wry smile playing on her lips.
Bates goes for the cover. One… Two… Three. The Deplorables are vanquished, their populist dreams dashed upon the canvas.
“Down go The Deplorables!” Suave laments, the crowd echoing his sentiment with a mixture of cheers and boos.
ELIMINATED: The Deplorables (American Heartland Coalition)
“Survival of the fittest, Johnny,” Colleen quips, unfazed by the carnage.
Now only three teams remain, standing amidst the detritus of battle. Chairs clang against flesh as Brock Cole Lee, eco-warrior incarnate, swings wildly, felling opponents with the precision of a chainsaw through virgin forest. Starz catches The Alabama Kid in the clutches of the American Stars and Fujiwara Arm Bar, the submission hold as inescapable as the grasp of Uncle Sam’s tax collector.
“Will The Alabama Kid tap?” Suave gasps, on the edge of his seat.
“Only if he’s got any sense left,” Colleen muses, a smirk curling her lips.
But then, a chairshot rings out like a gavel of injustice—Lee connecting with Starz’s skull, derailing his momentum. Chism enters with a vengeance, delivering the Anti-Hollywood Blockbuster to Lee.
“Chism’s looking to steal the spotlight!” Suave declares, admiration evident in his tone.
“Typical,” Colleen scoffs, undeterred in her cynicism.
The chaos intensifies as Bates lands the Gator Chomp on Chism, and GreenPete fires off the Harpoon to Bates. Tables shatter, kendo sticks splinter, and steel chairs fold beneath the weight of ambition and desperation.
“An absolute free-for-all! This is PCW at its most extreme!” Suave yells, barely audible over the bedlam.
“Or its most absurd,” Colleen murmurs, her voice almost lost in the cacophony.
The PCW faithful roar their approval, baying for more as the ring became a maelstrom of mayhem, each man fighting not just for the gold but for their very ideology. Brock Cole Lee, the purveyor of plant-based punishment, launched himself into the air, crashing down onto Starz with The Juicer—a move as smooth and brutal as a well-crafted stump speech. The crowd was on its feet; this could be the end.
“Starz’s dream might just be juiced!” Suave hollered, his voice climbing octaves in suspense.
But Chism, ever the showman, dove into the fray, breaking the count just in time. His arrival was timely, keeping hope alive for the American Patriots.
“Chism with the save! This match continues!” Suave exclaimed, nearly breathless with excitement.
GreenPete, the eco-warrior, wasn’t about to let the opposition grow roots. He charged, spearing Chism. The Alabama Kid, all Southern pride and power…with a crap-ton of NIL to boot… then delivered The Crimson Tide to GreenPete. It looked like another one bites the dust, but Lee sprang into action, disrupting the pinfall.
“Chairshots! Chairshots!” Suave cried out as the competitors escalated their offensive to new heights of extremity, echoing the political battlefield outside the squared circle.
Then, amid the chaos, Starz seized an opportunity. The Alabama Kid found himself upended over the top rope, his exit as unceremonious as a concession speech. Starz then turned, his eyes locking on GreenPete who lunged with a Harpoon, only to find nothing but steel as Starz dodged, leaving GreenPete to collide with the unforgiving ring post.
“Oooh, Green “Oooh, GreenPete just made a campaign promise to that ringpost, and I don’t think it’s one he intended to keep!” Suave hollered, his voice dripping with the kind of glee reserved for political upsets and underdog victories.
With GreenPete reeling, Starz pounced like a candidate on a hot-button issue, dragging his dazed opponent back into the center of the ring. With the precision of a debate team champion, Starz applied the American Stars and Fujiwara Arm Bar.
“Starz is locking it in! He’s looking to make GreenPete tap out faster than a politician changes their stance!” Suave roared as Colleen Crowder shook her head, clearly not appreciating the analogy.
“Oh shut up, Johnny.”
On the apron, Brock Cole Lee, ever the activist, attempted to intervene. But Chism was there, yanking Lee down. The crowd erupted as GreenPete’s resistance finally crumbled, tapping out to the unrelenting pressure.
“GreenPete has tapped! The Green World Order is eliminated! We’re down to two teams!” Suave declared.
ELIMINATED: The Green World Order (Progressive Alliance)
But the bell had barely rung before Professor McCarthy, with his cadre of ideological warriors—the Flock—stormed the ring, incensed by the elimination. Their protest was as loud and disruptive as a filibuster on the Senate floor.
“Here comes the Flock, and they’re not happy about this at all!” Suave observed, as chaos enveloped the arena.
In response, McAvay, Bryan, and PCW Champion Charlie Blackwell of the American Heartland Coalition rushed down to confront the interlopers. The tension in the air crackled like live cables at a political rally gone awry. Corporate World, represented by Kirk Walstreit and P.M.C. Banks, sprinted down the ramp, eager to capitalize on the commotion.
“Corporate World joining the fray! It’s pandemonium in the PCW Arena!” Suave shouted, struggling to be heard over the din of the crowd.
The ring became a maelstrom of conflict, every faction fighting for supremacy, echoing the tumultuous nature of the political arena where only the shrewdest survive. Steel chairs swung like policies debated on the floor, each strike landing with the impact of a closing argument.
The PCW arena, a battleground of brawn and bravado, was on the precipice of descending into anarchy when Dawn McGill, the statuesque owner of PCW, emerged with a battalion of security guards, her heels clicking with authority on the concrete.
“IT’S DAWN McGILL!” Suave shouted.
“Why?” Colleen responded.
The crowd’s rowdy chants turned to cheers as she cut through the chaos like a decisive ballot measure. Her gaze was sharp, commanding respect and compliance as she pointed at each uninvited intruder, her gestures clear: it was time for order to be restored.
“Get ’em out of here!” she barked, her voice cutting through the noise like a campaign slogan piercing through political ads. One by one, the members of the Flock, Corporate World, and other non-competitors were escorted from the ring, their protests drowned out by the approval of the spectators. It took minutes that felt like an old school filibuster, but eventually, the ring was cleared, leaving only the true contenders for the PCW Tag Team Championship.
“Alright, folks, we’re back to sanctioned mayhem,” Johnny Suave announced, his voice tinged with a mixture of relief and excitement as Colleen Crowder scowled beside him, clearly unhappy with the interruption of the progressive narrative.
Back in the squared circle, the SEC and Starz N. Stripes along with Stone Chism re-engaged with a ferocity reminiscent of a hotly contested primary. Gator Bates launched off the ropes and connected with a Doomsday Device to Chism, who barely kicked out at two, keeping the American Patriots’ hopes alive.
“Chism avoids disaster! But can he capitalize?” Suave hollered as the fans roared, divided in their loyalties.
With the cunning of a seasoned political strategist, Chism sidestepped the Gator Chomp and countered with a cutter that left Bates stunned. They ascended the turnbuckle, trading elbows with the intensity of debate-night zingers. The Alabama Kid joined the fray, and together they executed a high-risk maneuver that nearly sealed the deal, but again, Chism survived by a hair’s breadth.
“Unbelievable! Chism is hanging on like a third-party candidate on election night!” Suave exclaimed.
Chism’s retaliation was swift and merciless—a low blow to Bates, the kind of dirty trick seen in negative ad campaigns. In a flash, he tagged in Starz, who unleashed a barrage of offense, slamming both Bates and The Alabama Kid into turnbuckles with the force of a landslide victory.
“Starz is cleaning house, and the crowd is loving it!” Colleen Crowder admitted begrudgingly.
Starz then planted Bates with a DDT before synching in the American Stars and Fujiwara Arm Bar, wrenching back with the determination of a determined incumbent. Chism, not to be outdone, delivered another low blow to The Alabama Kid, ensuring his partner could maintain the hold.
“Desperation moves by Chism! But hey, all’s fair in love, war, and politics… I mean wrestling!” Suave quipped as the crowd watched with rapt attention.
Bates had no choice but to tag out, his will sapped by Starz’s relentless grip. It was the moment of truth—Starz N. Stripes and Stone Chism secured the victory and became the new PCW Tag Team Champions. The crowd erupted into euphoria and dissent, a reflection of the polarized state of the nation itself.
“Starz N. Stripes and Stone Chism have done it! They’ve climbed to the top of the PCW mountain!” Suave declared, while Colleen Crowder’s expression soured further, her disappointment palpable.
“Sure, they won, but at what cost? And with what tactics?” she muttered, embodying the skepticism and critique often levied in political circles.
As the show wrapped up, the new champions hoisted their titles high, the PCW arena awash in the glow of their triumph. Suave signed off with characteristic flair, “This has been PCW Extreme Political TV… next week… Super Tuesday! Goodnight, everybody!”
Colleen Crowder, still salty about the outcome, could only offer a curt nod as the credits rolled, her mind already crafting tomorrow’s narrative.
RESULTS: -MAIN EVENT-PCW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Starz N Stripes and ‘The One Man Anti-Hollywood A-List’ Stone Chism defeated The Deplorables, The Green World Order, and The Sports Entertainment Corporation

My review of Disneys Wish which isn't at all organized or even well thought out. I'm just spamming text at the screen and hope it makes sense. Spoilers
I went into Wish with super high hopes because the internet was already tearing it to pieces based on the character models alone. I had high hopes that just meant people were missing an artistic style choice that the trailer didn't show. I also had hoped it would be a classic Disney Princess fairy tale. I really just wanted that, the classic disney princess. I have not been a fan of the animated films that are more artsy or explorative on different types of villains that aren't just a traditional badguy. We've had a lot of puberty/growing up as the villain or generational trauma as the villain. Theres nothing wrong with those, I sometimes just want a film thats prince/princess + badguy. Heroes journey.
The last Disney movie (and I'm lumping both Disney and Pixar together) that gave me real feels was Tangled. Do I think Tangled was absolutely perfect? well no, but I was willing to ignore the magical true-loves-tear because I just loved the goofy nature of Rapunzel and Eugene together. It was perfect because its a timeless movie. It will age well.
So Wish unfortunately was a huge disappointment. It didn't so much as follow a classic fairytale recipe as obviously it was a nod to classic Disney films. I appreciated that. I didn't realize how many easter eggs were hidden within it until the movie was done actually and I saw somebody elses review. To a point this actually made me more upset.
I went in focusing on the animation primarily because everybody said it looked like something off of Disney Junior. I actually liked how they pulled the 2d/stylization off of classic films like Sleeping Beauty. People said it made it look dull and the color choices were ugly. I don't think so. I love the Sleeping Beauty style. I thought it looked very nice. The problem is that the characters didn't blend in. It was like Disney was trying to make the characters also 2d but also 3d at the same time and they didn't match. I actually thought the characters looked like they were floating around on a greenscreen rather than physically present within the environment. I understand what they were trying to do, I just think it didn't quite work and it added to the illusion that it was a low-res Disney Junior tv show instead.
I also really liked Asha and Magnificos characters designs. I even liked how the Queen matched the King. At the beginning too I thought the Queen and King had a decent healthy sounding relationship which was nice.
What I didn't like was all the rest of the characters were useless including the goat. I understand peoples complaints about Ashas personality being a quirky girl or being a combination of all the disney princesses combined and I dont think she stayed that way for long. She was a bit goofy at the beginning of the film but then wasnt. The "seven friends"..I was going to go on a long rant but now I don't feel like it anymore. Now that the movies done I understand they were supposed to represent the 7 dwarves but they were supid. None of them had a personality. None of them had enough screen time to even obtain a personality. I never would have known they were the seven dwarves until I saw somebody elses review, with the exception of the one guy "thats why they call me grumpy". That one made me do a double take, like I guess he's got a similar color scheme. They should have just been nixed. All of them were useless. The scene where they used teamwork to pull on the ropes to release the dreams. You could have given more screen time to the goat and just had him do it by himself. The movie was too crowded. The song of friendship at the end...don't even get me started. It was so stupid.
That poor goat. They were trying to use him as another animal companion silly pal but even he didn't have that much screen time to even justify his silly voice. His one liners also didn't mesh with the tone of the film. He was pushed to the side but all these other useless characters.
My biggest beef was, I didn't think the king was that bad enough of a villain to be a villain and I think he actually had a point to an extent. The monkeys paw affect. The king literally has a utopia going where everybody lives a nice life, he just offers every once in a while to grant your wish. If its too vague or dangerous he wont do it. The catch is you forget what your wish was and you carry on with your life. Asha is mad nobody gets their wishes back. In particular she's mad her 100 year old grandfather whos wish was "to inspire the young people", his wish was too vague so it couldnt be granted. So she decides to break in and release everybodies wishes and give them back. My qualm is I guess is that theres a song about "be your own star" you don't need anybody else. And technically grandpas wish came true anyway. He did technically inspire the youth, infact they formed a rebellion and overthrew the country. So if you can still accomplish your dreams, why are you overthrowing the country? It infact was actually a dangerous vague wish because the country was overthrown and yall are all happy about this. I mean I do get it but it just didn't feel like it was enough to form a movie about it. It wasn't enough to tip the villain over the edge to be the villain.
My one question is, how old is King Magnifico? if him and his wife created the country and they do a wish ceremony when kids turn 18..are they immortal? has grandpa been waiting for his wish since he was 18? or is the country like 10 years old? What I would have done (even though I'm not a story writer at all), what if Magnifico had been eating the wishes to keep himself young forever (I guess kinda like mother gothel) cause then I'd be a little mad if he wasn't giving wishes back. I think that'd be a little more understandable.
and then quickly, I cant remember any of the songs. The songs I do vaguely remember did have a very similar Encanto/hamilton vibe to them. Particularly the intro Welcome to Rosas song...I understand it was a different writer for this film but Im just not a fan of that style of music. Just the fact that I can't remember any of the tunes anyway...its just kinda..meh...
anyway, I could rant more but this is already too long and it may be full of mispellings but Im not going back to read what I just wrote. Ha.

Having now seen all three of the Stuart Gordon-Jeffrey Combs-Barbara Crampton horror movies I can conclusively say a number of things.
Number one, Re-Animator is the best of the three obviously holy shit it's far and away the most movie movie of the three.
Number two, the special effects in all of them are often pretty good. Sure there's some really bad parts like the frequently unconvincing cat puppets and the fact the resonator in From Beyond looks like a child's science fair project but a lot of the gore sfx work and like the full-body prosthetics they do in all three of them are really good. Giorgio in Castle Freak looks amazingly horrifying and I think that monster thing that Pretorious turns into in From Beyond is really good it's super gross body horror which is what it's supposed to be. And in all three of them, injuries and blood look fairly realistic and ik it's cause they often had like, actual medical professionals they referred to to make it realistic. With these low-budget schlock pieces it's easy to criticize many aspects of them so I wanted to take a minute to point out something that was genuinely well done.
Number three, the actors are so much better than the material and I think in a lot of cases could have been given more to work with. I think Crampton's performance in From Beyond showed that she's just as capable at playing a scientist as Combs and I think they could have done more with her character. I think Jonathan Fuller could've handled more as Giorgio, perhaps to add more nuance to an extremely black-and-white character. And I think Combs time and time again has shown that he is a very skilled actor who can bring dynamic range and physicality to a role, but in every single one of these three movies, his character ends up either dead or presumed dead at the end. Give him a fucking break. Give him a character who doesn't end up tragically and brutally killed. Hell swap his roles with Crampton, make him the nervous househusband and make Crampton the breadwinner who has to fight the freak.
All of them are enjoyable films if you're someone who enjoys movies of this caliber. I think if you're going to watch them, start with Re-Animator, and your next step depends on what you're looking for. If you want body horror scifi with some really gross looking shit, From Beyond is your man. If you're more into a traditional exploitation horror "there's a guy in our house ripping boobs off with his teeth," Castle Freak is the way to go.
Should you watch any of these if you're not prepared for horror beyond what you see in like, Halloween or Saw? Probably not, unless you're comfortable with not just gore but heightened elements of sexuality as well including some fairly rough assault scenes. And therein lies the issue with so many films like these. It's a critical failure of the industry I think. So many assault scenes are completely irrelevant to the plot and are just there for gratuitous nudity and violence against women and it's like come on guys. If you want gratuitous nudity you can get that with consent. It's more fun that way. I do try to look past these issues when looking just at the plot or craft of the movie obvs, but it's something that plagues a lot of b rate horror and you can't talk about these movies without acknowledging these problems entrenched in the history of the genre.
Again obvs Re-Animator is the best of the three but in regards to the other two. Frankly, I think I prefer Castle Freak to From Beyond, if only because some of the effects in From Beyond were so gross I could not bring myself to enjoy them, particularly with the shit they have coming out of Jeffrey Combs's head holy shit that's so gross, but that's just me. I've never been a big fan of that style of body horror, and the scifi elements weren't enough to keep me engaged beyond that. Castle Freak is a style of horror which, while absolutely an acquired taste, is often easier to ingest because most of the time you know what's going on. It has a castle and it has a freak. That's the movie. I think they're equally as poorly executed as each other so no matter what, you're going to be in for A Ride.

[Review] The Golden Compass (PSP)
Tumblr media
His Dark Tie-in Game.
Wayyy back in 2016 I played the DS licenced game for the Northern Lights movie. I still haven’t seen the film but the PSP game is a decent way to follow up the Arctic animal companion game Never Alone, thematically. The DS game was unique among all the released versions; every other port was made by Shiny Entertainment. Remarkably, they put out the same game on PC, Wii, PSP, PS2, PS3, and 360.
The PSP might actually be the format it’s best suited to, with its cramped level design and disjointed gameplay. Or to put it another way, every other port was hampered by game design decisions built around the limitations of the weakest platform. My experience did suffer from mid-level loading and frequent audio hitches, not to mention the less-than-ideal PSP thumbstick. But there’s some kind of charm to the relatively low-res textures that are trying to capture this detailed fantasy world.
Tumblr media
This version of the game certainly does a better job adapting the film than the DS game did (although apparently the structure of the game is based on a version of the film prior to a last-minute edit that rearranged the third act), with a richer 3D world and a mix of in-engine cutscenes and FMV movie clips. There’s spoken dialogue throughout with Lyra and Pan’s actors reprising their roles and everyone else with decent soundalikes, while the gameplay has a try at representing different tones and scenes with its various states and modes.
The problem is that none of these modes is well executed, at all. When it’s Lyra 3D platforming it’s clumsy, with a bad camera and no drop shadow. When Iorek is brawling it’s shallow and repetitive. Lyra and Pan are sometimes called upon to do “evasion” sequences of boring QTEs, while Lyra’s silver-tongued conversations are presented as gauntlets of tedious (and difficult!) minigames. These latter two also have a set of consumable items to make them easier, although you get totally loaded up with more than you’d ever need.
Tumblr media
I do like how Pan has different forms that let him buddy-up with Lyra for different abilities: the ermine takes on precision actions and can scan your surrounds for interactables and lore, with the cat you can dash and climb, the hawk lets you glide Pathless-style, and the sloth(!) can grab and swing on poles. They’ve also added bits to the story which I always love to see in a tie-in game, although it’s mostly in the form of new boss characters for Iorek to fight, like an electro-tank, a magic shaman, a super-hunter with a wolverine dæmon, the witch-queen, and a heavily armoured flamethrower guy. But the strongest sections of the game are when it slows down and Lyra can explore an area, take in the detail they’ve packed in to make it feel real. These “adventure game” feeling parts also spotlight the alethiometer feature.
The eponymous device has a complex series of symbols, which Lyra gradually learns more about. This is often represented by picking up a big glowing collectible in the world, but there’s cleverer occasions where an object in the world will grant you the understanding of one of the three meanings of an icon, representing how Lyra’s life experiences are giving her deeper wisdom which leads to more accomplished use of the oracular object. You can then ask it prebaked questions, whether for plot or fleshing out the lore, using the meanings you’ve discovered and filling in gaps as a player by induction or intuition. Sadly this does then lead to another boring minigame, but there’s the core of a really interesting dynamic here.
Tumblr media
Due to the nature of the story the back half is very action-heavy when Iorek becomes playable, although they move a section of this to the start of the game, I guess for a more exciting cold open. But it’s rarely engaging enough to not become frustrating or dull, even with how varied the gameplay styles are. Every individual part is stilted and ends up dragging, so ultimately the game feels like it both skips around and plods along. The sprinkling of good ideas, occasional cheesiness, and the strength of the source material can sometimes shine through, but on the whole... what a mess.
