Hello. I've been wanting to get into SF9 for awhile now and I was wondering, what would you recommend variety show wise / music wise.
Tumblr media
Hi, hi!! Welcome new Fantasy so happy to have you here. I hope you know that getting this ask makes me immeasurably happy. My sf9 boys are beyond talented and it brings me a lot of joy to be able to recommend things to you!! I'm sorry this ending being horribly long and has a million links, but I hope you find it helpful!
Variety Shows:
League of SF9egends
Secret Code 9
Trip With Fantasy
SF9 Fact in Star <- Be prepared to die of laughter.
Mafia Dance (Poor Chani this whole episode ;-;)
SF9 Sangsa
They will also be on Weekly Idol next week, July 13th, so check them out!! :D
Title Tracks: These are personal favorites!
Summer Breeze
RPM
Mamma Mia (They said their new comeback has a similar style and I'm excited)
Easy Love
Savior This is actually a Universe release! But the video and song are sooooo good.
B-Sides: These are some that I really love. I tried to pick from a variety of their albums so there is a good spread. :)
My Song, My Story (It's actually one of my favorites in all of kpop)
Shadow
On and On (Inseong and Youngbin)
Fire
Jungle Game
Play Hard
Love Again
Liar
Some Really Amazing Performances: Quite a few of these are covers but, I feel like you get a better idea of a group's talent when they are out of their elements so I wanted to include them. :)
"The Stealer" Kingdom Legendary War
"Move" Kingdom Legendary War (Best performance from the whole show imo)
"Love Shot" KCON 2019 NY × M COUNTDOWN
"Good Guy" Comeback Stage
"RPM" SF9 LIVE FANTASY #2 UNIXERSE
"Fanfare" Debut Stage
"K.O." Debut Stage (Literally some of the most insane choreography in kpop)
"Be Mine/Growl/I Need You" KCON Japan 2017
Dramas: This may be a little on the extra side since I know that watching dramas is a whole new level of commitment, but SF9 are frequently in dramas... likely more than any other group. It feels like such a huge part of who they are so I wanted to include it! These boys have been in so many!! You can get a full list here, but some fantastic dramas they have been in are:
Hwiyoung & Chani / Imitation - they were part of a project group called "Shax". Hwiyoung even gets his own romance sub-plot, and it is just the CUTEST.
Rowoon / Extra-ordinary You - He has been in a ton of dramas, but this one is my favorite. It's about comic book characters who are trying to change their destiny.
Dawon /Doom at Your Service - This one is about a girl who is dying who makes a deal with a god of doom. Dawon plays the little brother and has an adorable bromance with the male lead. It's such a cutesy character, but the show is pretty top tier and he does such a good job!

I hope you don’t mind me asking, but I decided to become a Universe today after seeing Kino’s debut and discovering the rest of Pentagon! I really want to know them better, do you know any YouTubers who post about them? I’m okay with all types of video, I just want to know their personalities after going through their songs :) P.S. I think I’m Hongseok biased!
hi!!! no, i don't mind you asking at all, i love anyone who decides to become a uni! we can always use more and it's one of the best decisions ever ... imo pentagon is one of the best kpop groups ever. vocally, performance wise and discography wise they are truly the best of the best. nothing has made me happier than becoming a universe! (more under the cut)
pentagon is nine members in total, in age order: jinho (main vocal), hui (leader of the group, main vocal), hongseok (people like to say he is a lead vocal but imo he's a main vocal ... mariah carey i gotchu), shinwon (lead vocal), yeo one (lead vocal), yanan (lead vocal, chinese member), and the triplets/maknae line (born all within like a week of each other with like 3 days between each), yuto (main rapper, japanese member), kino (main dancer, center, vocal), and wooseok (main rapper). they are a largely self produced group, and all members have contributed to producing and writing their songs. mainly, it's hui, wooseok and kino. jinho used to be a vocal coach before he became a part of pentagon.
they are actively enlisting right now, so hui and hongseok are missing. jinho got discharged last november. yanan has been on multiple hiatuses due to his anxiety, so he is usually around mainly for comebacks. (he's missed a few tho, including naughty boy, humph! and dr. bebe)
so, i guess you already know kino. he's usually one of the few people get to know first. he's pentagon's center and main dancer for a good reason, and he's the performance leader of the group. he's choreographed for pentagon and he leads their dance rehearsals, too! here's his havana cover (demotape is my favorite fansite of his and maybe in general even), and here's yeo one (changgu) and him performing taemin's move, because it changed lives.
anyways, i don't really ... watch youtubers who post about kpop idols, not at all. so i can't be of help in that regard. i prefer to watch their actual content / interviews so that's what i can help with!
zip the record interview, esquire korea; this gives you a bit of an overview on where they're at most recently. it's a pretty good introduction and very self explanatory!
pentagon play superlatives; one of the first pentagon videos i've ever watched dated daisy era (so jinho is the only one missing here. hongseok is their designated english speaker so you will hear him a lot in american interviews! he became one of my first biases like that as well, he is a mood maker and easy to notice)
pentagon song association; another easy one!
pentagon try not to react to kpop songs; this one is pretty cute and so worth it ... (yanan is missing here because he was in china at the time)
singing in different languages (they did this twice, here's the first one with everyone but yanan)
their famous lovesick girls cover called lovesick boys. it has 9 million views.
if you really wanna get to know them tho ... watch their pentory! it's their behind the scenes content and it's a lot of fun! you don't have to start with the first (i didn't), you just pick and choose what you wanna see. one of my favorite ones is the do or not recording behind! and more recently their fanmeet behind. their feelin' like promo behind the scenes was also fun.
they also do their own variety content, called pentagon's variety lab. their youtube channel has a lot of content if you really wanna get into them, besides just their music videos! their dance practices are also fun. they had a little variety show called pentagon forest in 2020, here's the link to that. it's very cute and wholesome.
as for your needs as a newly minted hongseok bias, he has a cover series on youtube called HONG seasons. even during his enlistment, he's released songs here because we don't deserve him and he is the sweetest man on earth. head bitch in charge jinho, also known as kpop's first and only vocalist, has a cover series as well called Magazine Ho and releases covers at the end of every month. here, he monthly puts singers out of their jobs without a care in the world. we love that for him. here he is performing kino's original song gravity with him, and here he is performing bohemian rhapsody on his own, because why the fuck not.
so, there you go! i hope this helps as a bit of an introduction. i'm sure there's a lot more ground to cover but i hope this serves as a bit of a start. and i hope you'll enjoy being a universe. thank you so much for this ask! have a lovely day. 💕💓💌

Ranking SF9 Title Tracks (Part 1.)
I'm sad and emotional cause I miss Binseong especially with the comeback around the corner so I'm immersing myself in sepgu in a less sentimental, more critical way. This ranking isn't exactly in order of my personal favorites, but I also factored in which ones I feel are objectively better in terms of song quality, production, mv, overall vibe, enjoyability etc. That being said, I'm can be bad at viewing things objectively, so maybe I failed at doing that. I'm not a music critic, I'm just a fan with opinions. Disclaimer: I enjoy all SF9 title tracks, just some better than others, so don't be sad if I rank your fave low. We don't need that traumaaaaaaa.
Tumblr media
13. ROAR – It's good. Like really good. Like a work of art level good. The rap line shines (PRAISE FOR YOUNGBIN'S PART DURING THE BRIDGE!!!), the music video is so cool, love the choreography and driving/car concept; it's all close to perfection in everything except the actual sound of the song – it's very busy and loud, but it's missing that sense of cohesiveness that gives busy songs that sense of smooth finality.
12. Good Guy – It pains me to rank this song so low, especially since it gave them their first 3 wins. And they all killed this era in terms of visuals, the music video is sooo satisfying, and the song has such a clean production. And the choreo is cool; Good Guy fancams are some of my faves to watch. And the rap!!! Rap line is amazing here!! But imo, it doesn’t have as much of a WOW factor as their other songs do that leave me thinking about it long after listening/watching. I do love that Taeyang choreographed part of it; again, the choreo is the highlight. I think personally, I enjoy ROAR more than Good Guy and it's so experimental and takes a lot of musical risks, but Good Guy is objectively a better quality song because it plays things safe.
11. Fanfare – I genuinely want to corner and question the haters that said Fanfare was a flop debut. It’s catchy, the beat is snazzy, and the sound is so unique musically (it has that seamless cohesiveness that ROAR lacks). Line distribution is so whack (why did I never realize how much of the song was occupied by YooTae?! no hate, just an observation) and while I still think the song is amazing, I can't help but wonder how much more dynamic it would have been if they incorporated the other members more. Even though SF9’s concept has evolved and matured as they’ve aged, I feel like this song perfectly fit the concept they were going for at the time.
10. O Sole Mio – Where was O Sole Mio's win?? Every time I find one of those YouTube compilations of "100 songs every bg stan should know", O Sole Mio is almost always on there, and usually it's the only, or if not, one of the only SF9 songs on the list. The love is there so why no win?? While I wish the costumes were better, I think the concept of incorporating capes into the choreography is SO CLEVER!! Also, the song is so catchy, but the Spanish influence in the instrumentals makes it stand out even more so. And even though line distribution is very uneven, I don't find it too bothersome because each member has a very memorable part in the song. O Sole Mio was one of the first SF9 title tracks I fell in love with and even though I didn't hear the song when it first released, it gives me nostalgia to when I first became a Fantasy. Though, it does feel very dated in an isolating kind of way. O Sole Mio (and a lot of the other tracks from the Knights of the Sun album) is unlike any of SF9's other songs, and listening to it, you can tell that it's from early on in their repertoire and definitely during an experimental phase. It feels like a song from the past you love and feel nostalgic about, but if I were to stand it next to one of SF9's song they released after this, there were so many things O Sole Mio lacks that were improved upon: line distribution (*cough cough more Hwiyoung*), a more established group "sound", more dynamic choreography (the cape part and the entire part during the chorus is really cool, but the dancing during the rest of the song isn't that revolutionary).
Part 2 in progress...

Okay bro I have to rant about this stuff.
So basically, the MV for Yurina's first comeback was posted yesterday right. I am SCREAMIMG the entire time. It reminds me so much of Utopia istg. Like it's great that she's finding the concepts that suit her best but damn she unlocked the memories of Utopia again and I'm crying because she deserved to debut but didn't get to with kep1er and it's upsetting like fuck you mnet she was in the top 9 every time then she suddenly drops to 14th that was bullshit. But yeah Yurina's new single Cherish is just a Japanese version of Utopia I swear I love it so much. You need to go listen to it and tell me I'm not the only one who gets those vibes.
And with kep1er's Up! They did so well! I actually like this summery concept for them better than Wa Da Da but that could just be me living for summer concepts more than things similar to girl crush (wadada wasn't girl crush but it was close imo). But anyways! The line distribution!!! It's actually relatively fair considering there's 9 members and the last song was extremely unfair! Could it be more fair? Obviously, it's not perfect. But it's actually pretty fair and Hiyyih actually has lines! Like genuine actual lines!
Finally there's Lapillus's debut! Shana is finally debuted! Tbh Hit Ya isn't my favorite song ever, but it's still really good! And I found a short video of their bside and Shana's vocals that we came to know and love in GP999 were so much more obvious there. Like in Hit Ya her vocals just don't have the same tone as they did in gp999 and I love them regardless but her high vocals hit different. The styling though!! The stylists did amazing! The sets the outfits the hair the makeup everything is perfect! Literally my only criticism from just one listen this morning (will probably have more the more I listen) is because I'm not a fan of the concept and I prefer Shana singing elegant pretty songs because it gives me life.
Finally: Nayeon's Debut. Can't rant too much about it because it's not out yet but the album preview came out today and I'm loving all of the songs already. Like the title track Pop sounds so summery and Nayeon is MADE for cute and summer concepts. But also Felix being the luckiest fanboy ever ??? He's featured in the second song on the track list and we all know he's a HUGE twice fanboy. Bestie is luckier than we'll ever be😭
Anyways I had to rant about those no I'm not sorry for this long ass ask there was a lot to unpack in my mind
YURINA DEBUTED? I LTRLY HAD NO IDEA GONNA GO CHECK RN
i heard of hit ya, checked lapillus for chanty mainly but my ass was like it's gonna be an elegant concept surprise it's not
I DIDNT KNOW POP CAME OUT ALREADY GONNA GO LISTEN KZHSKZD
NAW I LOVE ASKS ISSOK

Everyone on my timeline was upset that seven blocked SNTY. Just like you said in your response, I doubt it's purposeful. The company clearly sees what's going on and that's why they're releasing remixes to help us.
No matter the result, jungkook has really proved himself. He hasn't had it easy with any release tbh. With seven we were battling country racists. With 3D, there were a lot of big releases. And now with Golden we're battling Taylor swift LOL we can't catch a break. It sucks because apparently we could've gotten #1 album sales if he released the week before Taylor did 😭 but staying in the top 5 after all that truly shows jungkooks impact. Plus I'm sure SNTY will get more GP support after his live performances because imo it's was better than the recorded version
Yeah, he had the luck to debut is in the same week that The Beatles have a comeback? Terrible timing lmao. But Golden had the second biggest first day streams after Proof (for a k-act), and the biggest second day streams for a k-act, plus broke some other records. It's doing pretty well, but it does have fierce competition. SNTY was nr. 1 on TTH right? And Jungkook got his own cover. It took weeks for that to happen with Seven so this may already be proof of Jungkook's with the GP. Also, Seven was pushed to the radio before it even came out, but I don't see anyone talk about SNTY being sent to radio? Is that not happening? No matter what happens Jungkook raised the bar for soloists and kpop acts in general, and did really well overall. It's always the same roadblocks for BTS and foreign artists. Seven benefited from just being more comercial and marketable, and also having an American artist backing it as well as some radio play.
And, yes, the live version is in fact better than the studio one. I love how Jungkook sang "control" live - so good. But I wish the backing track had been a bit lower, because sometimes I had to strain to hear his voice clearly.

compared to how much i wanna kiss the big brains who handle txt’s overall creative/artistic direction for being so brilliant, it frustrates me that their marketing and social media efforts aren’t as impactful
it’s almost as if the people behind their socials don’t really understand how each platform works and who the target market is per platform :(
they repeat their content between instagram and tiktok, their youtube videos don’t have very useful titles (cough what’s going on with txt series cough), the international subs aren’t up at once, if at all, their instagram has become a hodge podge of reels over the past year, and their approach for promoting DILT got old real fast -- bombarding followers with tiktok trends that have come and gone 😩
there are times too when their socials are completely silent for weeks or even months and that could really hurt their engagement on those platforms (with the exception of tiktok since it looks like the boys can directly create videos themselves). i have a feeling that their youtube account is handled by a separate unit from their ig/tiktok and while that’s understandable (long-form vs short-form media, among other things), it’s a missed opportunity to have all these accounts inactive for long stretches of time, especially in the context of the kpop industry, where new acts and music are being dropped and heavily promoted literally every day
on the other hand, when their promotions are in full swing, MOAs are bombarded with new content -- from both their own accounts and the accounts of the different shows/magazines/vlogs that they've guested on -- which also hurts their engagement since there are too many releases happening in a short amount of time!!
i’m not saying that the boys should be filming unique content for each platform bc their scheds are already jampacked as it is, but the way they present the main content can be tweaked when promoting on different platforms. for instance, during comeback season, we can get some quick behind the scenes/making of type of content on tiktok, the more fleshed out/documentary type behind content for youtube, and have the concept photos and some behind photos on instagram, which would all (ideally) link to platforms in which people could stream or buy their music!!
in between comebacks, it would be really nice if we had some solo or unit activities (song/dance covers, variety show guestings, interviews, magazine shoots, etc) to keep the buzz going about them and to give each member a chance to showcase their personality beyond their own brand of variety content (which imo, caters more towards existing MOAs than casual listeners who'd like to get into TXT more. entertaining as they are, if you are just getting to know them as a musical act, their variety content might be a bit overwhelming to get into). imo, some of the activities they had going on for them during the height of the pandemic were really good moves from a marketing standpoint (especially for yeonjun, with the prive alliance collab and being invited to nyfw albeit virtually) -- i hope they'd be able to get that type of variety back in the way they get to promote each member and in effect, the group as they get to introduce themselves to a larger audience who may not be into kpop at all!!
(on the topic of business/marketing decisions, partnering with dior says a lot about their popularity and influence but imo, dior’s designs are a little too stiff and subdued for txt’s image. i honestly think it would have worked better if it were a deal for individual members like say beomgyu, versus being a group ambassadorship. but that said, it must have been a really sweet deal for all of txt for a fashion house to get the entire group as ambassadors so go get that bag, boys!!)
with all that said, i'm so happy for and proud of the boys on their VMAs debut!! they killed it and i know many new MOAs were born that day 🥹 let's hope they get managed and promoted better bc they deserve the world!!

Hey! I hope you're feeling better!
Wonho leaving has had me a bit down lately, too - that plus trying to get ready for the holidays, it's honestly crazy!
I'm really hoping this proves to be a nice break for him, he's done so much in the past few years! I'm sure Wonho will come back better than ever.
Libido is what got me to stan OOO, too! The acting & the storyline really got me - but also musically they're so talented? The song itself blew my mind the first time I heard it! Also the choreo!?!?!? OOO really is a one of a kind group IMO.
I've never heard of k-ville, I'll have to check it out! Keeping track of new releases can be hard, so I'll have to look into it.
Those are all great groups you listed!! I've been following the Omega X situation and it's honestly so sad - as much as I love their music I'd rather them get out and be safe than stay stuck in that awful company.
Also TAN is soooo good! Du du du is one of my favorite debuts this year - and Walking on the Moon is probably one of my favorite comebacks! I really hope they have a long career. Honestly all those groups you listed are great!
Ooooh MX in a supernatural concept.... I'd love to see them tackle that. Werewolves would be great! Did you see they're having a comeback in January!? I'm thrilled - no clue what it'll be like but honestly I'd love to see something darker from them.
Also these are some good questions!!
Favorite Monsta X era: I feel like my answer to this will change every other week because it's so hard to pick! Right now I'm gonna say Shootout. Shootout has some of my fave MX choreo, and I loooooooooove Wonho with black hair.
Fave photoshoot: I think their photoshoot for Fatal Love might be my favorite! The suit looks... Monsta X can really pull of a suit.
Hobbies: Reading & video games are probably my two big ones! I also like journaling, but I'm not super consistent with it lol
Favorite movie: Halloween! I really like horror films
Favorite Food: Lasagna
Favorite season: This one's hard! I want to say Winter, but there's something about Fall that I really love. Can't really pick between fresh snow and leaves changing
Tea or coffee: Coffee - I need coffee to survive lol I probably drink way too much of it but oh well!
What about you??
Plus an additional question: If you could plan a week long vacation to anywhere in the world, where would you go & why?
Also: if MX could collab with any artist, who would you want to see them collab with?
Also that meme omg thank you 🤣❤️
- MBB Secret Santa 🎅
Hey!!I am feeling better! But I will feel better once I hear from him, lol.
In all honesty real life has distracted me enough, with the holidays approaching and all. Do you celebrate? Or do you have any plans in general? It is a busy season anyways, lots of gatherings and parties and stuff…
From ooo i have also really liked all the solos that they have been releasing lately. My favourites are Begin and Be Free, but they all are very good! As you said, they do a lot of work, from producing, to the choreo, they are very unique and that’s what attracted me immediately.
I know we’re he for the monstas, but it makes me really happy to have more in common musically speaking. Music is very important for me and it has been years since I have felt like this. I do like rock from the 80s and indie and grunge from the 90’, even some more recent emo bands, but most of the new western music (or even music in my language, i despise reggaeton, and that’s all people seem to listen to nowadays) so when i discovered kpop I was blown away by everything, the concept, the songs, the voices, the clothes, the choreos and I am perfectly aware of the terrible things that the kpop industry hides behind the glamour ad I hate that there’s no way to support your idols without supporting these problems, but still I love the music and I’m happy with that.
I loooove dark and sexy concepts and that’s something the Monstas do very well. I mean the darkest I have seen was Voodoo doll by VIXX and that was just a cultural reset. I would love to see some more of that.
Favorite Monsta X era: I will say Love killa, cause that is the era that got ge to stan them HARD, and from the eras with Wonho, definitely Alligator! I love how he looks all the time, and that bubblegum pink hair drives me insane
Fave photoshoot: the third photobook from the FOLLOW albums, it’s just my jam, i love all the pictures, all of them.
Hobbies: Reading & handcrafts. Tho I haven’t touched a book in so long I mostly read fanfics, lol
Favorite movie: portrait of a lady on fire. I love that movie, it makes me feel so many things, also Bram stoker’s dracula. I do love horror movies too!!! Now with age i have become i bit squeamish, but I do love gothic and supernatural horror (I am more of a Freddy kinda gal.)
Favorite Food: possibly sushi
Favorite season: Fall, all the way. The crisp air, the leaves the wind…
Tea or coffee: tea! Coffee upsets ,y stomach and I don’t like bitter flavours…
Ooof, the week long vacation….i’d go to a place I’ve never been. Probably Iceland, there’s something about that country that calls to me and I would love to see the landscapes, and feel the (probably shit weather), also I love countries where they believe in elves and fairies (tho they'd never admit that)
I have never thought about MX collabs…. I mean I do not think they’d particularly fit with a western artist (tho so far my fav collab is the one they made with Sebastian Yatra) but also in Korea… they are so unique that I have trouble imagining something that would be epic.
How about you??
Also have I asked you if you got a bias? My memory is shit.
In any case, if you had one of the monstas for yourself for a day. What would you do? Where would you take him? Adventure? Sightseeing? Cosy time at home?
And yes, definitely check k-ville entertainment, the new video is out and that’s how I found out that sub unit from shinwa has new music and that made my day
Tumblr media
"Never mention bald Wonho. Your great-grandmother has been waiting for a photo for years"
"Has he uploaded it yet?" "Calm down, mama, they said that they'd do it soon"
AND IF THAT'S NOT ME.....
have a great day!!!!

please talk more about key as a performer!! :) i love hearing ur thoughts.
i feel like he’s not appreciated enough? everyone knows he as the fashion guy on the group (which valid) but imo hes shinee’s all rounder. literally Great at singing and dancing. (i mean all of shinee is good. but i have to be honest sometimes i can’t listen to taem/minho’s vocals. they’re not as strong compared to the other 3.) and i’m super excited to see what he has in store for his upcoming (rumored) solo!!
i too am excited for his comeback!! key's solo music is some of my favourite; one of those nights and i wanna be are pretty consistently in my top rotation and i wanna be is probably one of my top mvs for styling + design. i wish he had had more of chance to promote before he enlisted but hopefully that will be remedied this time around.
i do agree that he is shinee's allrounder, and he's an allrounder in an uncommon way for idols, which is in his technical prowess. he's an extremely good technical dancer and singer, which is an understated kind of impressiveness that i can't think of very many other idols having, maybe rain? i wouldn't even call taemin the same level of technical performer, because he's not a technical performer: he's an economical one. taemin does exactly the right about of movement to convey the point he's trying to: no more and no less. he purposefully pulls back when he's not in centre in shinee and you can occasionally catch him flub nonessential points (in any of his solo choreos also) because he knows where people are looking; this is the mark of someone who has a both a deep understanding of their body and a natural inclination to moving in it. he does a similar thing with his vocals, but from the opposite place. taemin is not a natural singer; he has a pretty short range and his tone is a little weird, but he's done a ton of training and worked very hard to make those flaws into a unique sound that is instantly recognizable as him. is it to everyone's tastes? nope, it's not even to mine half the time, but i've never mistaken a taemin track for any other vocalist.
key, on the other hand, does everything perfect. precision is very deeply ingrained in the way that he holds himself himself on stage and he doesn't let himself slack at all. i'm going to try my best to explain this but i don't know if it's going to make any sense. key pays a lot of attention to the technical aspects of performance because he has to. although he does have a higher natural aptitude/ability for singing than taemin does, he doesn't have the same understanding of his body, and he didn't have a guaranteed debut spot. he's not as good a vocalist as jinki or jonghyun and none of them compare to taemin in physicality, so he poured pretty much everything into being as technically perfect as possible, because he can't generate the same kind of intuitive body understanding. i sound like a crackpot but i promise this is a thing: you have a better innate understanding of how your body moves in space the younger you start working with that body. i've skateboarded since i was 8, competitive swam until i was 13, and i have a third degree blackbelt; i'm very aware of the way my body moves and my reflexes are extremely fast: in the accident where i broke my elbow five years ago the reason only my elbow broke and not my entire face and forehead is because i had the reflexes and training to know to cover my head. taemin started as an sm trainee at 11, and he'd obviously been dancing for some time before that. i'd hazard a guess and say that key probably didn't starting learning how to dance until he passed his audition at 14 (for reference, some ballet masters will say that 14 is too late to start learning and you will never become a principle dancer if you start then), and that means even though they both had approximately the same amount of training (both entered sm in 2005), taemin had more formative years training than key did. he's a great example of the old adage "everyone can sing/dance/act, you just have to practice" because he really did work his ass off.
it's also worth mentioning that key is known as the fashion/funny one because he engineered it that way. like i said, he wasn't going to stand out on talent alone, so he picked an area in which he could make himself stand out. every group needs someone who is good on variety shows/guesting/hosting and the other four are not well suited to it (jinki is too quiet, jonghyun has no filter, taemin is.....a weird cryptid at the best of times, and lee sooman literally told minho to shut up and look pretty), so key saw the spot he could take and he took it. and that's still his spot; he's not even a year post-discharge and he's already on the host panel of two very popular variety shows (amazing saturday and i live alone), and he just signed a massive promotional deal with taeyeon for olive young, plus all of the other smaller stuff shinee has done in the scant 7-8 months that shinee's been officially back. he's styled himself into a variety star because personally i think that's where he's more inclined to be. i do think he loves music and performing, especially as shinee, but i haven't seen the same drive to create performance in his solo work as i have with jonghyun or taemin's solos. the both of them have very strong underlying drives in theme and concept and creating a holistic experience with their work (jonghyun more musically focused and taemin more performance) and while undoubtedly key makes really fucking great tracks that i LOVE, they don't say as much. i know he's said that the new stuff will be something very different for him so maybe that means we'll be getting something wild. i'm always holding out hope for a concept album, but it's not like i'm gonna not listen to his stuff just because it isn't #makesyouthink or whatever. good music for the sake of good music is still good music.
#key#key w#kpop questions#kpop analysis#there's been a lot of people on twt saying how people only know kibum for being the 'sassy' one and honestly.....he did do that on purpose#i dont think kibum has done a single unintentional thing in his life he's too smart and calculated for that#i just think he likes being famous more than he likes the artistic process of being an idol#he's extremely well spoken and a great storyteller and he's more naturally suited to social performance than stage performance#and none of this is bad - in fact it makes him that much more of an allrounder#but you can be good at something and it still is just a job#i know ppl wanna hype up their faves and he does absolutely deserve credit for being as skilled as he is#but he's not really billing himself on his 'idol' skills first#i think it's fair that people see him as the funny fashion one because he's the one pushing that#and especially recently people that have been seeing him on amasat and i live alone have been seeing the social side of him#which is extremely caring and supportive#his i live alone episodes were 1) making food for his neighbours and fellow hosts#and taeyeon#2) making food and taking care of taemin just before he enlisted and 3) spending time with his military friends#he cares very deeply about people and his very diverse skillset and fame make him an ideal host#especially when there's been SO many terrible and unkind ones#again - he has seen a gap where he can fit and he's filling it#tbh i think his variety show work is a lot more important and effective in the industry in the long run than him making more music#even though i would still like him to make more music#kibum please i am (im)patiently waiting#im sorry anon this was probably not what you were wanting me to say but would this be a post from me if it didnt have a hot take#i just realized i barely talked about vocals but also in my defense i am not the vocals person#this is very long i was not expecting to have so many things to say#kibum#answers#text

you mentioned that doyoung and taeil stans are deprived of their vocals and it's true, but imo it's even worse in jaehyun's case (I'm only talking about official songs/projects here, not covers). he's a main vocalist but so many fans think of him as of lead saying he doesn't deserve his position and more and more in recent nct comebacks he's treated as a sub-vocal. i don't like the line distribution discourse as i understand there are many factors contributing to how and why the lines are given the way they are but as someone who biased him for his voice it's upsetting how we have to wonder with each new cb/song if jaehyun will be singing at all or maybe rapping here and there or sm will just use him as a pretty face again. he's the only baritone main vocal in sm and one of the few in kpop as a whole but the industry is sadly known for its preference for higher ranges and crazy notes so jh's voice happens to be criminally underutilized and is barely given a chance to showcase how good it actually is. there are very few challenging/interesting parts he gets that would you go ah yes that's a main vocalist. the songs he got to shine in the most as of late are coming home, make your day and all about you but that type of songs gets the least attention from fans so it yet again leads to him not being acknowledged for his main role in the group. i know he's not the best in terms of technique in nct and that's fine i don't need him to be, but sm decided he was good enough to be a part of their vocal line and now they're not using him, so what was the point, really. and it's not like jae himself isn't passionate about it either, he loves music, loves to sing, said after their concert he's really glad he became a singer and that he constantly gets vocal lessons, he's improved a lot since debut and honestly i would love to hope that soon enough he gets something that requires singing – a collab, sm station, appearance on music varieties such as koms, heck even just him having a good part in their next title track would be a lot, but seeing how sm – and eventually non stans – see him more as a visual/model/actor but not a singer, idk... i do hope their next album proves me wrong though all i want is to hear him singsing, that's fr the only thing im asking for from the company when it comes to him.
- Jaehyun and Haechan were updated to main vocals not long ago. Perhaps, not all k-pop wikis changed bios. Many fans actually can’t differentiate between good, very good, excellent singing. To be impressed they either need labels (main vocal, being chosen among thousands of candidates by a famous university) or something easy to appreciate (high notes, long notes I’ve heard from several vocal couches that high notes “are not hard” and is not a measure of someone’s talent).
- Not all fans listen to Stations, OSTs or covers. You know how low are views for “Coming home”, “Try again”, “Timeless”. Jae’s cover hit 50mln because of aesthetics and a popular pop song in English (lots of non-fans watch it).
- I wouldn’t say Jaehyun doesn’t get interesting or challenging parts. In this area he is doing better, than Doyoung. Jae gets to rap, to sing low and high, whisper, scream, etc. Jaehyun got Hyuk’s part in “No longer” during concerts. He often stands out to me in B-sides. it is true, however, that (similar to Doyoung) he is a second violin in many songs, including A-sides. And that his baritone tone is rarely used. You explained the reason for the latter yourself. He needs a song tailored for a baritone, while NCT sings over ready demos. I don’t know how keys work, but Doyoung looks for instrumentals of songs originally sang by females in a key he can sing (lower). To be able to sing with the full use of his tone Jae needs a slow song (like Coming home). His problem here is the ballad’s unit issue. Not “SM is not using him”. Recently Jungwoo got a few songs well-suited to his voice. Jaehyun will get his turn.
- Jaehyun has 2 OSTs, Taeil - 3. Haechan has zero.
- Jaehyun is not forbidden to sing. He can do covers as often as Doyoung. He filmed his MV in multiple locations in several countries. The editing was much more costly, than most Do’s covers. After the success of the first cover SM will gladly give him more money. Fans asked him about a second cover. He doesn’t want to.
- In every interview Jaehyun says how he works on his singing, both technically and emotionally. If you watch recording diaries, Jaehyun is one of those neos who needs encouragement from the producers. He is not fully sure in himself yet. Doyoung whines about wanting OSTs and talks about wanting a collab with this artist and that artist at every corner. Taeil went to KoMS and regretted it.
- When we, fans, blame SM, we tend to forget to take into account what songs are selected. “Without you” was performed in 2017, 2018, 2020. “Timeless” and “No longer” included in Neocity’s tracklist. Jaehyun was the main star of “All about you” performance for “Resonance” Beyond concert. Jaehyun gets to sing and show off. It takes a real fan to know, that is true, but you can’t say “only looks are used”.
- To sum it up, I fully agree that we are deprived, but I can’t agree that Jaehyun is a special case here (because he is pretty). He suffers the same “1 out of 9″ as others, sans Taeyong and Mark. Ten is the main dancer, even he doesn’t always get to fully shine, his spotlight is given to someone else.  Aftreall, SM upgraded Jaehyun officially to a main vocal. It didn’t forget he is a singer.

Lol its fine!! Reply whenever you can ^_^
But ahh true, true. Idk why I thought it would be a hint to the music lol but a sort og an evolution of the concept so to speak. Either way, am excited for the comeback because fresh svt is always iconic. Oohhh the concept photos are all pretty and idk which one to pick jfkshfjsjd. Like they are all very on brand for them but also unique and pretty. Very artsy haha.
Ahh yes, rabbitnwas forever iconic and it was what helped other places like discord to do similar things! But ah understandable!! Both seventeen and nct (when I was getting into kpop more) always felt like BIG well known groups due to their fandoms being so big at least to me. Especially when people always recommended their songs i just assumed they have been around for a while like bts when I joined only to realize they are still rookies. Monster rookies indeed!! The fact so many people love them is enough for me to say they are amazing, well respected and loved by many. Those comments annoy me, especially when people downplay their hard work by claiming 'bighit helped them get more famous' like what!? Yes bighit did help with getting more western attention per se but like downplaying as if they haven't achieved anything at all is confusing to me. Claiming how streaming fans aren't doing s good job to which im like one, mass streaming isn't healthy and two, fans who do try their best and we do beat records of our own. Seventeen isn't unpopular, just because they aren't you know who level doesn't mean they aren't big like do people forget what unpopular means?
Anywhoo, a day late but happy late birthday to our tiger King. May he forever rule the tiger land and take over the world with his tiger agenda lol.
yes! one side fits my aesthetic the best but all the concept photos were nice ^^
and yeah it is annoying but at the same time those people are so detached from reality that I'm just sort of like whatever djflgj like 'it's obvious to anyone who knows what they're talking about you're wrong so I'm not going to bother arguing w you' is sort of my mindset when i see those comments dhfkj bc if i don't think of it that way then i get angry easily. the way i see it bh/hybe definitely is helping SVT with western promotions but like. i don't think SVT/pledis would have been incapable of expanding into the western market on their own if they wanted to. but it's a given that it will be easier and faster with hybe bc they have connections and a reputation in the western market already established. honestly I'd guess that was one of pledis's main incentives for agreeing to the acquisition. but at the same time hybe and western media wouldn't give SVT the time of day if they truly were the flops some ppl try to claim they are lol
and yeah agreed, streaming culture can be super unhealthy. it's one thing to do it if you want to but at the same time don't be losing sleep over it or prioritizing it over your real life responsibilities. and definitely don't guilt trip and say a bunch of toxic things to others to get them to stream... i feel like it would be a lot healthier if fanbases just stuck to simply explaining, hey this is what streaming is and why it can be important (for like music shows etc) and here's how to do it properly if you choose to stream, and then just let people decide for themselves. there would still be people more than willing to do it, and without the guilt tripping maybe even more people would just find it enjoyable. but hey, what do i know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i also think most kpop stans underestimate how many views from from casual listeners and fans vs hardcore fans/streamers. like streaming does make a difference, but not 100M views difference like some people try to act like it does. tbh there are a lot of groups that have a smaller core fanbase than SVT but get hundreds of millions of views bc they have a lot of casual listeners. you can even see it internally too: don't wanna cry is SVTs most viewed MV by a mile, it's the only one to pass 100M views, let alone 200M. and it has nothing to do w carats streaming dwc extra hard, it's bc it's arguably SVTs most well known song outside of the fandom. i see reactors all the time who react to it and say "oh i know this song! i had no idea it was by seventeen" and you can look at the comments section and see a bunch of people saying the song has a fandom of its own/even if you're not a carat you have to know this song
kpop stans also put too much emphasis on views imo and also equate views to popularity, which on the surface might make sense but isn't always the case. actually in terms of profit, groups/companies make the vast majority of their money off of album, merch, and ticket sales than they do off of views. but those are all things that are a lot harder to "sell" than views, because they actually cost money for the consumer, while you can watch an MV for free. hence why it makes sense that there are a lot of groups with hundreds of millions of views that get relatively low album sales. it's easy to convince casual fans and and listeners to watch an MV than to get them to buy something
and I'm not trying to diss other groups at all or try to say groups that consistently get 200M+ views are flops, they're absolutely not. I'm just trying to point out that kpop stans completely underestimate the amount of casual listeners that exist
but this is why SVT is honestly such a fascinating case. their MV views are nothing to write home about, and yet they're the second highest selling k-act at the moment and are in the top 10 if not top 5 highest selling k-acts of all time, their album sales are literally insane. a lot of people chalk it up to carats being bad streamers but like i said before, streaming isn't going to make a difference of hundreds of millions of views. this indicates to me that seventeen have a bigger core fanbase (ie people who call themselves carats and actually keep track of seventeens activities) but a smaller audience of casual listeners compare to other kpop groups. and i think a lot of people, carats, and non carats alike, pick up on this in some way or another but don't realize that's what's going on and it manifests in kind of weird ways sometimes
and this fact isn't something that bothers me, i actually think it's super important more than anything for SVT to have a strong core fanbase if what they're shooting for is longevity. but i do find it strange bc as i said, groups that do better with digitals than physical sales make total sense from a consumer standpoint!! so how did SVT end up like this!! it's so interesting for me to think about. i think i would have a better idea of why this is if i had been around since debut but alas
the only thing i can come up with is that SVT is better at retaining fans or like... getting fans invested in the group so people who become carats are less likely to be multistans? bc multistans play a huge part in both being and attracting casual listeners. they're the ones making video compilations and edits and content that includes multiple kpop groups, which is how a lot of non-fans get interested in other groups. whereas if someone is just a carat and making content for SVT the people most likely to watch that content is ppl who are already carats. i know im not the only one that's noticed it's kind of rare for SVT to be included in multistan edits and videos. which i don't blame anyone for, i think most of those people genuinely just don't stan SVT and they shouldn't be expected to include a group they don't know we'll or at all. at the end of the day ppl can make what they like. but it's interesting to observe as a general trend. but idk SVT potentially having a lower percentage of multistans still isn't really an explanation for why SVT doesn't have as many casual listeners bc those things kind of just go hand in hand. like either one could be the cause of the other one if that makes sense
ANYWAY sorry for the long reply but as i said the ratio of SVTs core fanbase vs casual listeners is a topic i find endlessly fascinating dhfmfj

my top ten favorite kpop singles of 2021 so far: first quarter edition (january-march)
10. Pixy - Wings: I’m not as into this song as other people, but it’s grown on me, and I think they have a lot of potential. I did not expect a group called “Pixy” to have this dark of a concept haha, I like that. I like the choreo and overall performance of it too, I think that’s the highlight for me
9. G Idle - Hwaa: Not my favorite G Idle title track, but I do think it’s in the top half. It’s interesting to me that they did this song, since it is pretty much all in Korean, there’s no English whatsoever (the only English is a “yeah” at the beginning haha), which for a group like G Idle who has used a lot of English in the past and is very popular internationally is kind of a bold choice, and I’m into it
8. Ateez - Fireworks (I’m The One): I’m still not fully sold on Ateez’s direction post-Wonderland/Answer, with the “end” of their pirate concept (possibly, it seems complicated lol, idk, but you know what I mean anyway), but I do kinda like this song! It sounds kinda like... European lmao. Like I keep thinking I hear accordion in the drop, but idk maybe I’m just imagining things. I mean all that in a good way, btw. Like a good kind of European (if you can imagine such a thing)
7. Shinee - Don’t Call Me: As someone who only got into kpop in 2019, and didn’t even get into a single boy group for like 6 or 7 months (and even then, for a while I just had one single token boy group lol), Shinee isn’t a group that I had checked out much from until fairly recently. I’m still new here, I suppose lol. But yeah idk, this song is good! I love the production and their obvious charisma and talent. Like, I can tell even just from this song that their reputation is earned. It’s just a solid release
6. Purple Kiss - Ponzona: I do prefer Skip Skip, but I decided to limit this to singles and title tracks. I also prefer My Heart Skip a Beat (by a lot, actually), but that came out last year lol. This song has really been growing on me a lot though! Like, a lot actually. I like the violin, I think that’s a really interesting touch haha, I feel like that adds so much to the way the song sounds overall. Yuki’s rapping is impressive too, I like her flow in every song I’ve heard her in so far, especially since she writes her raps herself and Korean isn’t her native language. Honestly that’s one of the most impressive things about Purple Kiss... they seem to be involved in writing all of the things they do! That’s SO RARE for a group to do right from debut, especially for a girl group! I think that’s a great sign that things are changing, and girl groups are being taken more seriously and being allowed more creative freedom than ever before. Ponzona was literally a song written for a monthly evaluation when they were trainees. That’s really impressive. Skip Skip was too, but yeah lol.
5. Pentagon - Do or Not: I mentioned that for a while I just had one token boy group that I liked, and that was Pentagon haha, they were my first. I like that this is a return to their fun sound, but in a different way... like, this song doesn’t sound anything like Shine or Naughty Boy lol. Pentagon are just really good at conveying passion in their songs and I think that shines through here too! I like the way the bass and percussion sound, that’s just quality mixing lol. I also love that even though it’s this kinda pop-punk-ish-doo-wop-ish kpop song, it still has a bit of sadness underneath the fun, which is something I think is a trademark of Pentagon’s style haha. But mostly, it’s fun
4. Tri.Be - Doom Doom Ta: The main reason I checked this out was because it was written and produced by LE from EXID, and you can really tell haha. In fact, her voice is in the song at certain points, and like... she has a really distinctive voice lol. Anyway this song is like a pretty hard commitment to this Latin/moombahton kind of sound, and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that trend in kpop, but either way, I do think this song is a bop. I’ve had it on repeat way more than everything below this point, in fact all the songs in this top 4 I’ve had on repeat like an order of magnitude more than the songs from 5-10 lol. it’s been a slow beginning to the year. I don’t have a lot of specifics to mention here about Doom Doom Ta, I just think it’s an earworm
3. Weeekly - After School: This was really highly anticipated for me, because I love their previous title tracks. Tag Me especially is a song I consider to be almost perfect, which is not something I say about very many songs at all haha. I personally don’t think After School is quite as good as Tag Me or Zig Zag, but I do really like it! It’s always good to get more fun, exciting, unashamedly catchy songs haha, it’s a breath of fresh air. I love this concept for them too, I think it fits them really well! They’re just a lot of fun. This mini-album, We Play, is my favorite of theirs so far too, though that doesn’t necessarily affect my placement of this song in particular
2. Cherry Bullet - Love So Sweet: God damn, this song is really good. It’s really simple, but that works to it’s advantage imo. I love that the background melody of the instrumental during the verse is the same as the vocal melody in the chorus (or at least very close), that’s just super satisfying. Ending the song with an extended “da da dadada da da” segment was a big risk too lol, that could have been annoying, but idk I think that really is one of the highlights of the song. This song feels like the kind of song where the songwriter came up with that melody and went “YES! this is IT! YESSSSS” and they knew they had come up with something really, really catchy, and they built the rest of the song around showcasing it. And it works!
1. Dreamcatcher - Odd Eye: This probably isn’t much of a surprise lol. But similar to After School... This isn’t my favorite Dreamcatcher comeback, and tbh I think it’s my least favorite of the Dystopia trilogy. But like... that’s still enough to make it my favorite song of the first quarter of 2021. It’s great, I love the way they do the cyberpunk concept and sound without going into the synthwave direction like Everglow La Di Da did. I love La Di Da a ridiculous amount, but I just mean that it’s nice to see variety even within a similar overall concept. Also! Handong is back! And she crushed it! In previous title tracks she and Gahyeon often got the least amount of lines by far, and the least amount of screentime and such, and Gahyeon definitely got times to shine during Scream and Boca and made it clear that she’s leveled up a lot, and I was really hoping that Odd Eye would be able to do the same for Handong (without sacrificing Gahyeon’s screentime and lines)... and yeah, it really was, lol. Handong was all over this song, and her voice reaaaaaally complements this sound. This group has no weak links, and obviously all of us already knew that, but now even the people who only casually listen to them know that without a doubt too.
idk... i’m not totally sure about this list but that feels mostly right to me i guess. I feel like Odd Eye is definitely my favorite so far, but to be honest I don’t feel like it’s the Song of the Year. like, if it had been released in 2020, I don’t think it would have made my top 10. If nothing better than Odd Eye comes out for the rest of the year then sure, it will be my SOTY haha, but idk, I just think that there hasn’t been anything *truly* great so far yet. And that’s okay... I’m very picky about this kind of thing. I don’t give high scores to things that don’t deserve it lol... and like in my opinion there were only 4 songs in 2020 that are the kind of near-perfect instant-soty song I’m talking about, and three of those four came out in the second half of the year. So the fact that I don’t think anything so far has been at that top level isn’t a bad thing, and isn’t really something I’m worried about. I think we definitely have not gotten the best songs of the year yet (unless everything else ends up sucking lol, but idk i hope thats not what happens...)
oh also there was an WJSN comeback today, and that would probably have been on this list, but I havent heard it yet because i was waiting until I finished writing this haha. like, since it came out on March 31st, tbh I’m just gonna count it as an April comeback, so i’m sure it’ll be in my list for the second quarter that i’ll post at the end of June lol. i mean, unless i dont like it. but i’ll probably like it haha.

Hi! I saw ur post on how it’s hard to stan gidle bc of the questionable stuff they do and since I don’t know much about it can u please explain to me anything problematic they’ve done? Not that I doubt u I just wanna know about it
ooh, girl! lemme tell ya. this is gonna be a long one, and i will preface this saying i absolutely do not have all the facts and details, but this is what i’ve gathered in my time being a mostly soft neverland.
when (g)i-dle debuted they released this v beautiful mv along with their debut song latata. in the mv the girls had henna in their hands, which, ok. nothing too bad, right. but that was just the beginning of a very weird history of cultural appropriation.
then they released another banger: hann (alone). amazing vocals. amazing sound. cool choreo. but the mv was littered with all these…hm. middle eastern references. which. ok, latata also had some of that. it’s…ok. maybe they’re just going for A Thing. it’s ok. this is just their first comeback, their second single overall, and their first digital single release ever. BUT during one of end of year shows, the girls found themselves in hot water bc they had a stage where they had freaking synagogue as their backdrop. not even like a cool 3d stage, it was printed synagogue on freaking sheet. we all collectively had a very oof moment. (also, shuhua had like, no lines in this song. a crime on itself.)
after that came senorita. which should have been called señorita. it was catchy, it was replayble, it was spicy. it was also also kind of weird how they had a guy just singing “señorita” in the background, and no other lyrics in spanish, other than soojin saying “señor” by the end…hm. also the beat is just very generic “latin-inspired” song. in one of their live stages they had a fake-ass mariachi band as their….back up dancers. or whatever. they were just in the background pretending to play the trumpets. which personally i found more funny than offensive. but also i’m mexican and when momoland dressed up in ponchos, sombreros and fake mustaches, me and my sister just laughed and went “haha we do look like that!” i can take a joke. like, very easily. (also, if you want a more tactful latin-inspired k-pop song, listen to vav’s senorita & give me more. absolute bops imo.)
after that came uh-oh, which is a very clearly an old-hip hop inspired comeback, even down to the mv. it’s proooobably my favorite song of theirs ngl. this comeback wasn’t…too bad or shrouded in controversy, ‘cause tbh the mv director did a pretty good job at paying homage to late 90s/early 2000s music videos. but still, some people were skeptical considering the rep they had been building up. and at this time it was becoming very clear that soyeon is calling the shots, or at least has the most say out of all the girls both in songwriting and art directing when it comes to their concepts/mvs.
during the summer/fall of 2019 gidle participated in the competition show queendom. in the show, during the planning of the stage performance for their cover of 2ne1′s fire, soyeon asked yuqi to make “tribal sounds” for the opening of the song and sing it like she’s “an african chief” and said this was how they could keep their sound, which she describes as “ethnic hip.” it was. gross. and the rest of the girls just laughed it off. queendom pretty much ended up confirming everyone suspicions that soyeon is the one coming up with these ideas and the rest of the girls are just there to do what she says. you can look up the behind the scenes and planning of the stages on m-net’s youtube channel. soojin doesn’t even get a word out when they were planning the fire stage. it’s…weird ngl. you can’t even accuse m-net of evil editing this one bc she just says that! like, wtf. anyways [here is an excerpt of the video]. she says it with such a straight face, too. ew.
people demanded an apology from gidle, soyeon more specifically. it never came. so people boycotted their next release: lion. honestly i don’t know if any transgressions happened during this time cuz i was just so put off by what was mentioned above that to this day i can’t really even vibe to lion. it just brings a guttural disgust to my whole being.
i’m little iffy on the timeline here – bc like i mentioned, i was keeping as far away as possible from gidle at the time cuz of soyeon’s comments – but i do remember that some time after yuqi found herself in hot water for a comment she made about shuhua during a livestream that went like she “needed darker skin to be a police because her white skin wouldn’t let her to catch criminals at night.” or at least that’s how a fanclub made it sound like. it sounded v suspish, but a lot of fans came to her defense saying the joke was poking fun at how fair shuhua is and how she wasn’t actually making fun of darker skin. the fanclub that made the translation actually came out with a letter of apology saying they had rushed the translation and the joke was actually little more nuanced than what they made it out to be. regardless, yuqi actually apologized on a fancafe letter. which was actually really nice of her, since the mistake wasn’t so much on her part, and if anything this is a way lighter offense than anything soyeon has ever done or said, and yet….
[here is a koreaboo article that includes screenshots of the fancafe letter and a translation]
it’s been awhile since gidle/soyeon have said or done anything since – well, it’s been a while since they have released anything, and they’ve been under a microscope since the queendom incident. also, i haven’t payed attention at all to what they have been doing, if they have been doing anything, lol.
their latest transgression has been the very blatant, very suspicious uplifting of imagery from fka twig’s cellophane mv onto their mv for their newest single, oh my god. @anna-something made a [post] which very clearly lays it all out, screenshots and everything. considering all the evidence above i have to say this one also falls on soyeon’s shoulders yet again. also, as i was making this post someone commented on an yt comment i made on a mv reaction of the mv (since i’m not gonna give them views, lol) saying “maybe they have the same mv director.” i looked it up, they don’t. cellophane was directed by andew thomas huang, while oh my god was directed by yoon rima.
in conclusion, it is very exhausting to try to stan (g)i-dle. wouldn’t recommend it. mostly because soyeon does not seem like the greatest person ever. now, i will say i am all for cultural appreciation! in fact, i tried to believe that’s what they were going for during senorita. but… it’s become very clear that soyeon doesn’t understand there IS a line between appreciation and blatant appropriation, so she tends to fall on the latter. if she just apologized, strived to be better, and actually took the criticism and applied it towards becoming a better person – and therefore a better artist – than i could get behind her 100%. but as it stands right now, i don’t like her. i don’t like her at all. i have given her chances, but she does not seem to want to accept her missteps. she doesn’t even addresses them at all. and i’m tired. if yuqi could, why can’t she? i doubt cube, as shady as they are, is keeping her from releasing some sort of statement.
if she intends to make it big over here in the west she needs to grow up, she needs to apologize. until she does that she will continue to jeopardize not only her own career, but also yuqi’s, miyeon’s, soojin’s, shuhua’s, and minnie’s careers, and they really don’t deserve that. she might be the biggest voice in the group, but she’s also the one dragging them down. APOLOGIZE, SOYEON, GODDAMMIT!
if anyone wants to add anything else that missed, please feel free to do so.

hehe!! obviously, your taste is just as amazing!! i'm lucky i get to be an anon for you ;; and aww you must've been really emotional!! since it's a meaningful comeback for you as well! i stanned them during debut era, hehe, but it took me quite a while to learn their names and fully stan, since i was busy with many other groups! i fully fell into the atiny life in the early days of say my name era, though! and i literally have so so much to say about pristin and their potential..i hate pledis -🐇
i don't know if we can really count bol4 as a girl group since they're a duo of artists more than actual idols but.. i love them so!! AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR CHUNGHA'S COMEBACK EITHER i'm so ready!! i'm curious to hear what she'll show us this time 💞 (since i never listen to teasers because i don't like spoiling myself the music) and that sounds like a nice lazy day 💕 i'm glad you got to relax like that! my day was nice too! i went to eat cake with my aunt at this really good place!! - 🐇
i listened through the playlist and i love it!! first of all i already knew don't need your love & highway to heaven, both of which i absolutely adore!! they also inspire me to write a lot,, though i still need to get to the actual writing process ksjfosdn then of course UTOPIA IS SO GOOD as expected from ateez,, it was a strong contender for my favourite song from the album! i didn't get around to listen to red velvet's new album & jaehwan's debut album yet, though! so (...) - 🐇
it was really nice to hear these really good songs, i'm more motivated to finally listen through them now!! parade was really nice, and i really loved blow me!! i'm glad jaehwan didn't decide to go for a full ballad album, and went for versatility instead!! now, our summer is my favourite song from txt's debut album, but i didn't hear the acoustic version until now... it's really beautiful, i was taken aback by it, i usually don't enjoy remixes/arranges that much!! though you can't (...) - 🐇
you can't go wrong with an acoustic version, right. i really liked it, its vibe is different from the original, but it's still a very nostalgic end-of-summer-memories kind of song... AND FINALLY hold on me is so amazing... you might just have introduced me to my new favourite song, maybe.. i really loved it that much.. i'll definitely download it onto my phone! and oh my gosh i'm sorry, i didn't realise i was ranting so much,, sorry!! ;; - 🐇
-------------------
Okay, I want to apologise again for not being able to answer these earlier, but I do feel much better now so I’ll definitely reply to everything promptly ^^ also do not worry about ranting, i love love love reading it and answering! (My awfully late response may not indicate that on this occasion, but I swear there’s absolutely nothing to apologise for)
Yes, it did feel quite significant in my heart hehe i’m glad they’re receiving success! i can’t lie, it literally took me 3 hours to learn their names and faces, but it helps there was a good amount of content and help (again credit to @wangtaeil for that!)
omggggg bol4 are so awesome, of the songs I’ve heard I have enjoyed them so much! I don’t want to spoil too much for you, but it look and sounds like a bad-arse concept for Chungha, she’s so versatile and just downright amazing!
CAKEEEE CAKE CAKE CAKE, which flavour was it? That day sounded nice for you too, I’m glad to hear you enoyed it  ^-^
oooooooo what kind of stuff do you write? (only if you’re comfortable talking about it of course <3)
What was your favourite song from ATEEZ’s third EP?
Me toooo, Jaehwan’s mini had so much variety, I enjoyed it way more than I expected!!
Our Summer was my favourite song too and you are correct! Can never go wrong with an acoustic version, people who heard it at the showcases are so lucky, it’s super duper lovely~ WOW WE SHARE THE SAME VIEWS, remixes sort of feel like a waste of  a track imo when they add it to an album, one would rather hear a new song than a remix... (looking at blackpink’s Dx4 remix)
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I’M SO HAPPY TO HEAR JUST HOW MUCH YOU ENJOYED HOLD ON ME. When you have a chance, you should watch the performance of it, the dance reminds of signature Infinite performances T^T the Dream Concert made me particularly emotional the support of inspirits in the crowd, his little smiles throughout the performance and Woohyun’s soulful voice just transports me away (whoops now i am ranting, sorry!!)

Eurovision 2004 my top 36 (WOW)
Tumblr media
Hello, and welcome to another episode of this ESC top series, and for the first time ever I go to two different dates: May 12 and May 15, 2004, when the 49th edition took place in Istanbul, Turkey, after Sertab Erener’s victory in Riga last year. This year was the first one to have a semifinal round to accommodate the growing number of participating countries, which was of 36 this year. While Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, FYR Macedonia, Switzerland and Monaco returned to the competition, we said hello to Belarus, Albania, Andorra and Serbia & Montenegro. From the semifinal qualified 10 countries added to the 14 automatically qualified countries from 2003. The contest was won by Ukraine and Ruslana with the song Wild Dances, making this their 1st win and they won the year after they debuted. And now, let’s start this kinda long list. Also, this year is the worst one in terms of sound quality, most of the songs sound cheap and there are a lot of mic fails.
1st Place: SERBIA & MONTENEGRO/Zeljko Joksimović & Ad Hoc Orchestra-Lane moje (Real Placing: 2nd-263 points)
At first I was bored of this song, but then I listened to it and I was amazed by how beautiful is this song. His voice is stunning, the music is mesmerizing and wow... I don’t know what else to say, this takes my breath away and my senses fly to another place.
2nd Place: UKRAINE/Ruslana-Wild dances (Real Placing: 1st-280 points)
HELL YEAH THIS SONG!!!! I was, and still I’m obsessed with this song, it’s so energizing, powerful, epic, and makes me feel good, Ruslana is such a perfect singer and what a voice does she has. Of course this is a worthy winner and what a winner! Also when I was playing GTA 4 this song appeared and I was like ASKJFKLDLK and Ruslana was the DJ, and it was one of the best moments of my life.
3rd Place: CYPRUS/Lisa Andreas-Stronger every minute (Real Placing: =5th-170 points)
Again a cute ballad with a very young singer, and I found it very lovely, the lyrics are cute and the music is so wonderful. I’m so moved by this song every time I listen to this. Surely this song deserved so much more than it got.
4th Place: SPAIN/Ramón-Para llenarme de ti (Real Placing: 10th-87 points)
Oh a song with a very salsa touch to it, Ramón’s voice is very good and suits this song perfectly, the music is so catchy and the lyrics are good. AY QUE CANCIÓN TAN BUENA. I love it.
5th Place: SWEDEN/Lena Philipsson-It hurts (Real Placing: =5th-170 points)
LENA <3 I LOVE YOU, the song is so good, her voice is stunning, as always, and she has such a stage presence with this song, and the microphone stand is a nice touch to this one, I like more the Swedish version but this is very good as well. Hurts oh it hurts really hurts in the middle on the night...
6th Place: BELARUS/Aleksandra and Konstantin-My Galileo (Real Placing: =19th SF-10 points)
This song is very good, has a nice feeling to it, I love the music and maybe the problem here is her voice, but anyway I always enjoy this entry so much and the performance is nice for this song, a nice debut for Belarus too.
7th Place: ALBANIA/Anjeza Shahini-The image of you (Real Placing: 7th-106 points)
Another cute song, the music is so good and her voice is stunning, also I’m in love with her and overall this entry makes me feel so happy, the performance is very effective and what a debut for Albania, well done.
8th Place: GERMANY/Max-Can’t wait until tonight (Real Placing: 8th-93 points)
This song is brilliant, the music is so calms and the lyrics are nice, his voice is so perfect and suits this song so well, I always sing along to this one and I love the part in which he sings in Turkish, a nice detail there. Wow... no more words to describe this wonderful song.
9th Place: GREECE/Sakis Rouvas-Shake it (Real Placing: 3rd-252 points)
If you asked me 2 years ago, I would’ve said that this was in my top 3, but later I discovered 8 songs I like more than this one, still Sakis is very hot, the performance is perfect, I enjoy the music and his voice here was a bit shaky but I like it. I’m in love with this men and with the song as well, what was Greece planning for 2005?
10th Place: FRANCE/Jonatan Cerrada-À chaque pas (Real Placing: 15th-40 points)
What a nice song, I enjoy this ballad so much and his voice is perfect and I love the last part because it’s in Spanish. The performance was a bit too much but it captures the essence of this song. What a beautiful song!
11th Place: ANDORRA/Marta Roure-Jugarem a estimar-nos (Real Placing: 18th SF-12 points)
Awwww a song in Catalan <3 and I love this, her voice could’ve been better but still this works, the music is so 2004 and I’m so crazy about it, this is such a wonderful debut and I enjoy this entry so much.
12th Place: MALTA/Julie & Ludwig-On again... off again (Real Placing: =12th-50 points)
I’m crazy about this song, I love their voices and the music is very schlagery but it works for me, the chorus is so catchy and I like the whole atmosphere in this song.
13th Place: TURKEY/Athena-For real (Real Placing: 4th-195 points)
Again this song is so epic and I love it, this has a nice chorus and the verses are very good, this is something I’ve absolutely would’ve heard in 2004, because it’s awesome.
14th Place: BELGIUM/Xandee-1 life (Real Placing: =22nd-7 points)
Why this finished so low in the final? THIS IS WONDERFUL AND EPIC, she sings so well and the music is amazing, I’m amazed by this one and since I heard it I fell in love with this song. Certainly deserved so much more than it got.
15th Place: ISRAEL/David D’Or-Leha’amin (Real Placing: =11th SF-57 points)
OH WHAT A VOICE, the music is very nice and the performance is perfect, I’m in love with this song and he sings like an angel. I’m so amazed by this song, and it deserved the final.
16th Place: ESTONIA/Neiokõsõ-Tii (Real Placing: =11th SF-57 points)
I’m in love with this song because it’s very interesting, the music is hypnotic and they sing quite bad but I enjoy this entry so much, and the language is very interesting. I like their dresses though.
17th Place: CROATIA/Ivan Mikulić-You are the only one (Real Placing: =12th-50 points)
Before Sergey Lazarev, there was Ivan Mikulić, and this song is lovely, even if it reminds me of another song from Mexico, his voice is so good and the music is pretty and enjoyable, but maybe in Croatian this would’ve been so much better.
18th Place: ICELAND/Jónsi-Heaven (Real Placing: 19th-16 points)
This ballad is nice, but maybe he was nervous because his voice sounds a bit bad here, the music is so brilliant and I enjoy the key change at the end of the song. Overall a nice average song.
19th Place: LATVIA/Fomins & Kleins-Dziesma par laimi (Real Placing: 17th SF-23 points)
Oh a song that makes me feel free, and I enjoy the music so much. Also the fact that this the only song that has been in Latvian it’s nice. I enjoy their voices but here the sound ruins everything.
20th Place: UNITED KINGDOM/James Fox-Hold on to our love (Real Placing: 16th-29 points)
This song is great as well, the music is so enjoyable and perfect, his voice is on point and overall this entry is very cute, I’m in love with this one, a nice song for me.
21st Place: IRELAND/Chris Doran-If my world stop turning (Real Placing: =22nd-7 points)
Oh another lovely Irish ballad, the music is so cute and his voice is very good. The chorus is so nice and here he unleashes his voice. This entry is vey nice and yeah, I like it.
22nd Place: FYR MACEDONIA/Toše Proeski-Life (Real Placing: 14th-47 points)
I’m just in love with his voice, it’s so amazing, but this song isn’t good, sounds kinda cheap and doesn’t grace his voice. I love the performance though and his voice makes this better.
23rd Place: NORWAY/Knut Anders Sørum-High (Real Placing: 24th-3 points/last)
Awww HOW THIS FINISHED LAST IN THE FINAL, this song is so cute, the music is so fresh and I love his voice, this song also has a very catchy chorus, this song didn’t deserve last place in the final.
24th Place: PORTUGAL/Sofia Vitória-Foi magia (Real Placing: 15th SF-38 points)
This song is very good, the music is so catchy and I remember the chorus because it’s memorable, her dress is awful and maybe the performance was poor but I love this song. Her voice is so nice to listen.
25th Place: MONACO/Maryon-Notre planète (Real Placing: =19th SF-10 points)
Oh this is such an adorable song, her voice is very good and I enjoy the music because it’s very good, this was very underrated and this was the comeback of Monaco, with a song that IMO deserved more.
26th Place: DENMARK/Tomas Thordarson-Shame on you (Real Placing: 13th SF-56 points)
This song is enjoyable and nice, he has a nice voice but maybe the performance was too red and too bad, overall this song is good but I need more oomph to this one.
27th Place: FINLAND/Jari Sillanpää-Takes 2 to tango (Real Placing: 14th SF-51 points)
I like the tango sounds on this song, his voice is good and the music is enjoyable and catchy, but I think this song needed a bit more to reach the perfection, also, Jari is such a charming singer.
28th Place: BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA/Deen-In the disco (Real Placing: 9th-91 points)
This reminds me of Hot Stuff from Donna Summer, and it works a bit for me, I like this one but I think there are better songs this year. I always dance to this one but maybe it’s a bit crazy for me, even I usually like this kind of songs.
29th Place: AUSTRIA/Tie Break-Du bist (Real Placing: 21st-9 points)
Another cute song, but sadly this fails to impress me and it’s kinda boring, the chorus kinda saves this one but this doesn’t go anywhere, they sing okay. Not a great effort.
30th Place: ROMANIA/Sanda-I admit (Real Placing: 18th-18 points)
I must admit that I love the music because it has potential, but her voice was a bit bad and the performance isn’t great, the dress is horrible and they killed their own song, sadly.
31st Place: THE NETHERLANDS/Re-Union-Without you (Real Placing: 20th-11 points)
This is lovely, but I must say that this song after it ends I don’t remember it, the atmosphere is cute but maybe this didn’t stood out in a quite strong final, also the running order killed it.
32nd Place: POLAND/Blue Café-Love song (Real Placing: 17th-27 points)
This song isn’t so bad but I don’t like her voice, is so weird because I usually like those voices. The music is good but sadly this song passes by and doesn’t say anything to me.
33rd Place: LITHUANIA/Linas and Simona-What’s happened to our love? (Real Placing: 16th SF-26 points)
Okay this song is also very annoying, this only repeats the chorus and it turns boring, the music is kinda nice but sadly this song doesn’t goes anywhere.
34th Place: RUSSIA/Julia Savicheva-Believe me (Real Placing: 11th-67 points)
This song is incredibly boring for me, it’s uninteresting, the performance is horrible, what’s going on with those dances, her voice isn’t good, this song is one of the worst Russia has sent to the contest.
35th Place: SLOVENIA/Platin-Stay forever (Real Placing: 21st SF-5 points)
Another boring and plain song, I’m not so fond of her voice and the music is very flat, not a brilliant effort.
36th Place: SWITZERLAND/Piero Esteriore & The MusicStars-Celebrate (Real Placing: 22nd SF-0 points/last)
No... just no Switzerland... this is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard, no more comments.

y ES theyre all really cute and entertaining, they dont go over the top, but theyre still pretty funny - as funny as a girl group can be anyway
pfft i find all of them entertaining tbh. show me some songs fam
o, alrighty. this is a dance practice, it was the first thing that was released and everyone went nuts
((Then she showed me the dance practice video))
lisa is the one with shorts, jennie has the cap, rose is the one with braids and the last one is jenniejisoo
oof, a bit too edgy for my taste, sorry. but the routine is great!
well, they were kinda made to be badass
yeah, i figured
also, a little side note
o?
their company is one of the biggest companies out there, but theyre known for their shitty management, as in, they dont really give idols many comebacks or promotions, so they dont have many songs;; even tho they debuted two years ago
well, that kinda sucks
yep..
i imagine this business is pretty finicky behind the scenes. i guess it can’t be all sugar and glitter all the time
true..  anyway, this is is one of the two songs in their debut ep lol
((Then she showed me “Whistle”))
also, may i add, their mvs are hella aesthetic
they seem to be..  not a fan of the super edgy american-ish songs though
yeh, their second ep was better. this is from the second ep
((Then she showed me “Playing With Fire”))
pyromaniac title, piano in the first second. this one's gon' be gud
yeah, this one was definitely better - well, not objectively, just imo
yeah then theres this beautiful beautiful song
((Then she showed me “Stay”))
that title gives me the hibby jibbies
y e p p
nvm i saw a mcdonalds in the background and now i'm chuckling
sdfdsdfg honestly the mv is So Pretty
ALEXA I DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR SAD TIMES
shhh its a nice lil song just dont read the lyrics lmao
...i'm reading the lyrics now I THOUGHT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE A BADASS GROUP WHAT IS THIS
the chorus is so nice tho, with the claps
it is..  well, that was mildly depressing
at the end they hold hands and laugh and jump around in a circle in the mv and its just..  i rlly like the mv and the filter is very pretty
a e s t h e t i c
anyway, back to badass
((Then she showed me “Ddu-du Ddu-du”...?))
this is their most recent release, this time with a mini album
and i see thanos’s throne is back
y eS
these sets look expensive as fucc.. is that a fennec fox?
maybe..
and the evil parrot from rio? what is this, a crossover episode?
THE MOST AMBITIOUS CROSSOVER
first we had the shrek 2 song, now this they gon' hit me with dat turu turu du alexa halp meh
i k r wat u gon do
is that.. a sparkly tank?
y ES jennie is an icon

I'm very curious to see whether Nmixx will succeed where Blackpink and Red Velvet failed. Let me explain what I mean by that.
Let's take a look at Red Velvet first. Red Velvet's concept, when they debuted, lies in the creation of actual red velvet. The flavor is made from chocolate and vanilla, and similarly Red Velvet the kpop group was supposed to have chocolate songs, i.e. darker, mature, or girl crush-y songs, and vanilla songs, meaning bubblegum or more upbeat songs. Take a look at this list of songs and tell me which ones you recognize:
List A (vanilla): Happiness, Ice Cream Cake, Dumb Dumb, Russian Roulette, Rookie, Red Flavor, You Better Know, Peek-A-Boo, #Cookie Jar, Power Up, Sappy, Milkshake, Umpah Umpah, Queendom, Feel My Rhythm
List B (chocolate): Be Natural, Automatic, Wish Tree, One Of These Nights, Would U, Hear The Sea, Rebirth, Bad Boy, I Just, Really Bad Boy, Zimzalabim, Psycho
I'm willing to bet that most kpop fans would only recognize Bad Boy and Psycho from List B, maybe Zimzalabim (I heard about it for being "controversial.") Without following Red Velvet I was able to recognize 8 songs (in bold) from List A (though I will admit I hesitated over Peek-A-Boo's placement on List A, I decided it was more upbeat in the end).
So. Red Velvet's had their fair share of "chocolate" songs, but only recently have they really been successful. You could argue that this is because of public interest leaning towards bubblegum, the point still stands: Red Velvet's "vanilla" songs have been overwhelmingly more successful than their "chocolate" songs. (Hot take of the day: Feel My Rhythm wants what Paint Me (Orchestra ver.) by Mamamoo has).
~
Let's take a look at Blackpink next. When As If It's Your Last came out in 2017, they introduced it as the "pink" side of Blackpink. They are "black" (goth? emo? girl crush?) and they are "pink" meaning more upbeat, lighter, closer-to-bubblegum songs. And then they...never mentioned it again.
It's not that Blackpink doesn't have any "pink" songs. They have As If It's Your Last (henceforth AIIYL), Stay, Ice Cream, Don't Know What To Do, Hope Not, and You Never Know. But AIIYL and Ice Cream are their only "pink" title tracks (and I would note that Ice Cream was the second single from an 8-song album–I cannot think of any other release that had 3 singles for only 5 other songs).
So, overall, Red Velvet's had more success with their vanilla, and Blackpink has basically just not done their pink duty. In contrast, I would point to Twice, whose music seems to have matured with their audience. They have unquestionably dominated the bubblegum scene (that's not a phrase I ever thought I would write), but more recently have had success with more mature songs (I Can't Stop Me, Cry For Me), and equally mature albums (please listen to Last Waltz, it's amazing). And I saw a lot of appreciation for The Feels, Twice's bubblegum-y, prom-themed English single. The consensus seemed to be: this is a good, Twice-like English debut.
All this to say, Twice is now in a position where they have transitioned to a chocolate/black side of their own, but vanilla/pink comebacks like The Feels are still met with applause. (Maybe not Scientist...it was too much like The Feels imo...but Formula Of Love was overall a very solid album that wasn't bubblegum).
But Twice's concept was never black-pink or chocolate-vanilla like the aforementioned groups. Their evolution worked for sure, but it wasn't in the name like Blackpink or Red Velvet. So let's take a look at their little sister group, Nmixx. Because Nmixx's concept from the very beginning has been mixing genre. It's in the name. Their debut O.O had a very clear girl crush-teen crush mix. A little 1-2-1 if you will. It's not quite the same as black-pink chocolate-vanilla, but the concept "mixing genres" could very easily mean doing all the genres.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the reception. I'm not here to discuss the kpop community's reactions to O.O (though I could), it's enough to say that O.O got murdered, dragged through the fires of hell, resurrected, and murdered again. If this was not your experience, please give me your life, I want to live it, but also I'm not going to sit and find the thousand posts and Tweets to prove you wrong. The community has experienced mass amnesia before when it comes to remembering how badly songs that turned out to be popular got dragged upon release (i.e. Dalla Dalla, Next Level). I'm also not going to sit here and discuss the bad faith criticisms of O.O that lead me to believe most kpop fans can't count to two and don't remember that Bohemian Rhapsody exists.
But I will say that I don't think it could be worse. Their next comeback could have the same terrible reception, I suppose, though I find it unlikely, but (and this may be naive of me) I can't really see how a comeback for a group that got so much hate for their debut can have a worse reception than O.O. What I'm saying is, they should continue to be "experimental." (That's in quotes because mixing genres is only new to JYP, not in general).
There's no telling what JYP is gonna do next with Nmixx. I said girl to teen crush for O.O because those are recognizable kpop concepts while the actual musical genres, baile funk and pop rock, don't mean anything to most people. I doubt JYP will use the same musical genres. But will they stick with the same concepts for the next comeback? Will they go for mature, bubblegum, dark/mysterious, elegant? Only time will tell. But I think they are in a unique position to pull off all of those concepts and look good doing it and I hope JYP doesn't waste it.
