Dreamling - The Last Unicorn AU

Dream of the Endless sat on the stairs of his throne and mulled over the last reports he had received. The dreamers were acting strange lately. Nightmares thrived more than usual, finding new and awful inspiration in their host’s minds. Additionally the dreamers seemed to grow in number, filling all the places of the Dreaming. He had heard many a voice asking him to create new places for sleepers to go because the dreams were overflowing with them. As if there were more and more humans, craving sleep… A hoarse throat was cleared loudly and Dream sighed wearily.

“The audience has ended for today, Mervyn. I will receive no-one else.”

“Boss, actually, I think you’ll want to receive this one.”

Dream looked up, curious at Mervyn’s unusual lack of swearing. The pumpkin-headed man stepped aside and through the heavy doors of the throne room a colorful tiny thing danced and fluttered. It was a butterfly.

Its wings tinkled as it flew and spun above Morpheus’ head a few times until he held out his hand to let it settle. A buzzing sensation ran through his hand where the tiny thing had landed and colorful shapes crawled over the back of his hand and back again to the wings of the butterfly.

“Welcome, little friend. You come from my sister’s realm. What news do you bring?”

“News! News! News travels fast in places where nothing much ever happens! But not here, so much happening all the time!” it chirped happily.

“Yes?” Dream prompted gently.

“But a lot happens, oh so much! Everywhere, from there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere! There is nowhere to go but everywhere, so I just keep on rolling under the stars!”

Now the butterfly’s voice had taken on a sad note and its wings quivered. The Lord of the Dreaming frowned.

“What has happened? Is there a problem in Delirium’s realm?”

“I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this – but she’s gone, no light, no light in her bright blue eyes, I never knew daylight could be so violent…”

“She’s gone? My sister?” Dream tried to solve the puzzle of the butterfly’s words with a growing sense of dread. The little thing’s wings had turned almost grey and flapped only weekly. Could it not sustain itself any longer? Morpheus carefully blew a kiss at it and again vibrant colors began to glow on the gossamer wings. It lifted itself up and began to sing:

“Thank you, you! There is no one alive who is Youer than You! Thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance, risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body!”

“It was gladly given. Now tell me, what happened to my sister? Where is she?”

“No, no, listen.” it whispered suddenly, intensly. “Don't listen to me, listen. You can find the others if you are brave.”

“The others? What about the others?”

Dread had formed a cold stone in his gut. Dream got up and started towards his gallery, the butterfly spinning happily around and around him like a rainbow ribbon.

“Live! Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new sensations. Be afraid of nothing!”

The Dream Lord did not think it was telling him anything with that, it was simply enjoying the energy he had provided it. He was not easily frightened. But he was worried.
