ooooo thank you evil question im gonna do books AND fics bc i love to proselytize :))) both in no particular order because picking just five is hard enough

books:

- moby dick by herman melville. truly one of the funniest wildest most fascinating books ive ever read. feels like playing tag with herman melville. i often think about how much more delightful it would be if i was operating with an 1851 set of pop culture references bc i could tell like 2/3 of the jokes were going over my head (if anyone has context for the running joke about tall kentuckians pls hit me up).

- ghost wall by sarah moss. hauntingggggg. haunting as hell. i think about it often

- postcards by annie proulx. im a proulx completionist and i do think this is her most delightful book prosewise (close range is a close second i would not describe it as delightful but its def masterful. two for one. everybody go read proulx.)

- wolf hall by hilary mantel. rip hilary the goat no one else should ever have bothered writing historical fiction. i love this whole trilogy (you already know the end! he gets beheaded! and it works so well!) but the first one is the weirdest and the most ambitious and my favorite.

- the age of homespun by laurel thatcher ulrich. yeah its a dense tome about early new england material culture. yeah it quantifiably changed the trajectory of my life. its LAUREL

raajenboagen by oplopanax (hockey rpf) the definitive omegaverse and the definitive historical au and the definitive romance. highly recommend if you like deeply thoughtful religious and cultural worldbuilding with your omegaverse or if you, like me, were obsessed with prairie blizzards as a child

soldier’s heart by alex51324 (downton abbey) i literally wrote a whole explainer one time on how much i love this fic. just finished my yearly reread, it still fucks

stretch out your hand, my captain by thegooddoctor (the terror) killer writing about gender and historical queerness and repression and also prose so good i genuinely think about it all the time

jeeves and the club for inverts by triedunture (jeeves & wooster) i am realizing that all these are historicals. oops well i like what i like. anyway anyone who can do wodehouse pastiche this good is a national treasure

down by the brazos by ionthesparrow (hockey rpf) you guys know that thing where the setting is a character. this does that for gulf coast texas, a place i have never been, in a way that makes me literally able to smell the water

Usually yes!! I love getting comments from my readers and I want them to know I appreciate it. if i don't reply it's usually because i think the comment is strange/rude or i just dont know what to say lol

def love me (and leave me to die) but it was hard to pick bc tbh im the angst queen (TOTK SPOILERS IN THIS FIC!!)

HyMart i'm going to pick this one because its happy all around and tbh idk what fic of mine is necessarily "happy" or has an ending that isnt streaked with tragedy or pain in some way whoops

probably my Post-SkSw fic for my Aftermath series . I have restarted this fic 3 times now and I just have no idea how I want to structure it, what I want the tone to be, things like that. Everything I put down never sounds right. Also I just don't have time lol

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue for sure.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Character's inner monologues and scene transitions, I think. I find inner monologues interesting, but I don't think I excel at making them interesting for the reader. I tend to give too much away. As for scene transitions, I find that when I write them they come out very short and rushed.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I usually don't do this because I'm just not a fan. in my world everyone in Hyrule speaks perfect American English lol. jk but kinda not. it's just not something I'm really thinking about when I write? and if I do include other languages, the main character(s) are usually oblivious to it and I don't include actual syntax. I'll just say "they muttered something in a different language" or something similar.

Super Mario. In Kindergarten. I made picture stories. LMFAOOOOO

love me and leave me to die this one probably. i worked super hard on it for zelink week 2023 and thought i presented some unique ideas. totk spoilers abound though lol

fdkasfdh COUNTRY COWBOY JIMINNNN gotta love him. I'm from New England so we definitely don't have cowboys around here, but the appeal of them from afar is definitely there for me. I got into watching the show Yellowstone and so Jimin's character definitely drew major inspiration from characters on that show. I'm glad I was able to give him some sweet southern charm, and that he reminds you of home!

we know that bobby only watched ds9 and dean watched the tos movies for sure which implies he's seen tos as well (plus he calls jack spock). so what do you think everyone's favorite trek is? sam is without a doubt a tng fan first and foremost. i think out of all tos movies cas prefers the wrath of khan because he Feels Things when kirk and spock do the ta'al through the glass. charlie has definitely seen some trek (we've seen her llap), do you think she's into tos first and foremost? anyway let's talk about star trek nights in the bunker.

OKAY SO I HAVE. MANY MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS. SORRY THIS IS SO LONG.

like. like of COURSE bobby only likes ds9 of course he does i could have told you this without the show becuase like. bobby is That Bitch. i think rufus will have watched TOS at least because leonard nimoy worked hard on linking jewish faith and practices into the vulcan lore and i think that would mean something to him. bobby will catch rufus smiling at him sometimes while they’re watching ds9 and ask him what all gruffly and rufus will smirk at him and say something about sisko with jake and bobby with dean and bobby will just cough and take a swig of whiskey and rufus will raise his eyebrows but let it slide. rufus definitely makes a comment once about dean&cas being like jake&nog that totally flies over dean’s head but bobby is all knowing eyebrow raise about.

i think cas and jack would really like discovery. while it has some issues with inconsistency, pacing, being a little dark, it also does better than the other TV treks at utilising the nature of film as a medium to instill a sense of wonder, at space and the world, and that’s something they’d really appreciate. i have my own issues with disco, but an obol for charon is as close to the central core of trek that disco ever gets. cas and jack also like that one in particular because they like listening to all the different languages being spoken. they all love michael (everyone loves michael). cas’ faves are stamets and reno because they’re mean and gay, jack’s fave is tilly because she’s excitable and bright and he latches onto that. dean likes reno because she’s got spunk. sam’s fave is airiam and he will never forgive them for killing her off. sam, cas and dean all feel an uncomfortable kinship with both ash and culber - they’ve both been the one with monster teeming under the surface, controleld by something not themself, but they’ve also all spent that time in hell/purgatory, separated from everyone they love.

thinking about episodes that would really get to them all, darmok is. THE ONE. i have a whole unfinished essay about darmok as the platonic ideal of star trek; the perfect distillation of everything trek is SUPPOSED to be about. it doens’t always get there but by god it tries! that speech michael gives in the disco s2 finale - “There's a whole galaxy of people out there who will reach for you. You have to let them. Find that person who seems farthest from you and reach for them.” - that’s what darmok is about!!! it’s all about a situation where real communication seems impossible, where everything we know about talking and learning has broken down. and picard says, okay, i will find another way. i can’t relate to you, you can’t relate to me, but by god i’m going to try. we all meet people we have trouble communicating with in our lives, and often, those people will not care about changing their own ways to accommodate us. for people with autism, adhd, psychosis, the list goes on, this is a very common occurrence. it’s exhausting and frustrating and alienating. darmok is all about crossing that barrier. about reaching for someone through a world of difficulty and learning how to talk. learning how to share something with someone who seems out of our reach. it’s beautiful, it’s heartwrenching, it means more to me than i can easily put into words! 

anyway i think the bunker fam would experience a lot of emotions watching it together. there’s defintiely a lot of hugging eachother, sam cries a lot and won’t look at anyone until after the episode ends. jack just asks a lot of questions and talks about his progress learning sign language with cas. dean snakes his hand into cas’ halfway through and doesn’t let go. doesn’t show the emotion on his face, but he clutches harder at the emotional beats. cas runs his fingers through jack’s hair and thinks a lot, and decides not to say anything unless dean talks first. its just a Lot for everyone. 

dean def makes them marathon all the TOS and TNG movies. it’s an experience everyone needs at least once. i think you’re right about cas and TWOK with the ta’al through the glass, but also ‘this simple feeling’ and the hand hold would make him feel crazy. bones being the one that spock entrusts with his katra DEF makes dean feel some type of way because as much as destiel is kirkspock-coded, dean IS bones, and seeing spock trust bones so completely despite how at odds they were when they first knew eachother would dig deep into dean’s psyche and make him more than a little bit nutso. the movies are way too long for jack so he mostly sits and plays animal crossing while they watch and looks at the screen when everyone else gasps or when something exciting is happening that holds his attention for a while. sam’s fave is nemesis precisely because it’s terrible and he loves how camp it is.

dean has definitely seen all of trek. i refuse to believe someone who watches as much tv and films as dean wouldn’t sit and watch the whole shebang. i think he’s probably seen TOS and the TOS movies more than the others because its easier than sitting through 7 seasons, but i think rather than that being his favourite he’d just have really strong opinions about the best episodes of each one? like if you asked him what his favourite is he’d say you can’t answer that because they’re all so different from eachother

VOY - bride of chaotica, non seqitur, macrocosm for the favourite episodes. seven, janeway and tuvok would be his favourite characters. he think toms a bit of a knob but also feels a kinship with him for the similar brand of bab dad-ism but he wouldn’t be able to put that into words. he’s also a fierce defender of threshold being a good episode (he’s right for that)

DS9 - our man bashir it’s our man bashir. he doesn’t dislike ds9 but its very plot heavy and he didn’t care for it when he was younger. rewatching it after living through multiple supernatural wars he’d probably appreciate it more. i know for a fact he cries every time there’s an episode about sisko being a good dad. jadzia and garak are his faves

TNG - he LOVES q. he also absolutely will not be caught dead referencing how much loves q after cas comes into his life because sam will do the little brotherly knowing eyebrow raise at him and he will die of embarrassment. he regularly references ‘there are four lights’ because he’s a fucking nerd. he has made cas watch elementary my dear data and fistful of datas a half dozen times each at LEAST. cas KNEW how dean was going to be about the cowboy hat he’s defintiely got into full cowboy getup at home just for watching movies and in cas’ head star trek is fully to blame.

TOS - oh there are so many good TOS eps to choose from. obv he loves most of the series becuase TOS has MANY banger eps, his favourites are probably like. mirror mirror, amok time (baby dean defintiely had some kind of crisis watching it for the first time; i know the rituals are intricate). i know deep in my bones that dean watched the conscience of the king (introduction of the tarsus iv massacre) once and then spent his entire teenage years writing fic about that in his head, whether he posted it or not. dean related too much to those experiences of shared hunger. city on the edge of forever is one of everyone’s faves for a reason (and i’m STILL mad we never got a closer take on that episode in spn it could have been so fun). 

ENT - he definitely thinks enterprise is stupid and he’s not wrong but he has also definitely watched it and been very repressed about the whole thing. mans was like oh i feel a kinship with malcolm reed the obviously repressed queer man. i will never examine this feeling ever again thank you <3 he also makes fun of archer for being obsessed with, of all sports, water polo. shran is his favourite character because he’s a little shit and makes him laugh, and t’pol, because t’pol is a badass and he’d appreciate that. i can’t remember the title of a single episode off the top of my head though lol.

i can see what you’re saying about sam being a TNG stan. i’m conflicted though, I feel like TNG’s generally the favourite of 1) obnoxious nerds who think knowing trivia facts makes them smart, 2) men desperately trying to seem masculine and 3) people who’ve watched it three times and have extremely complex thoughts on the personhood and rights of robots. i could see sam fitting into the third group, but people who are in it for the robot feelings are a coin flip between voyager and tng being the fave, and i just have a feeling that voyager would be his favourite. i know kid sam is getting gender envy watching voyager in shitty motels while dad and dean are out, trying to find the words for it. his first semester at stanford he talks a friend into giving him the janeway haircut and rides that high for months. sam’s favourite characters are seven and EMH. 

sam and dean have definitely had dozens of long drawn out debates about philosophical topics in star trek. do the holograms deserve rights and if so which ones. are the romulans and vulcans still meaningfully the same people. was spock right for trying to foment reunification by going undercover on romulus. can the borg be redeemed. etc etc.

i haven’t seen any of picard at all so i can’t comment. i also think sam and dean probably read a lot of the trek books? they’re pretty common to find in secondhand bookstores and cheap, would have been even cheaper back in the day. sam probably doesn’t care for them much, dean has a few solid faves though. i’ve only read the disco books so i can’t comment anything specifically (besides the fact that i think dean read dead endless and cried like a baby), but some of the TOS and DS9 books are gay as hell and i know dean was eyes emoji-ing that shit.

Hi!! Its the anon back AGAIN i want to say ur stories ‘type’ is more raw and cover topics that a lot of people are afraid to and i think that’s really dope of you. I relate to these stories too as i’ve been thru some of the types of situations so its neat to see smeone writing abt it. I think i just found ur blog thru tags on here, and my favourite stories of urs have to be chenles (thats my all time fav of urs!!) and i rly liked winwins ck and eyeliner story too, the essence of the stories were so different from like any fics ive ever read if that makes sense? Their vibes were super interesting. (im so sorry for this long ask omg) LASTLYYY my biases are chenle, jisung & renjun!! (Ot23 stan but im in love with the dreamies o gosh)

I do talk about some dark shit, unless you’ve read Winwin’s and Chenle’s fics I would advise you not to read.

This is definitely my favorite ask/review yet. Raw is exactly the vibe I aim for. I started writing because what I was reading felt a bit disconnected from reality. As much as I love escaping, the fics I loved the most were achingly sad and authentic.

Writing is usually vulnerable for me, I’ve journaled since I was 6 and that mentality hasn’t changed. The winwin story... like you said, I struggled with those problems in high school. My eating disorder, insomnia, dependency on substances was horrible and, of course, I fell in love with people who had it worse than me. I hope you felt recognized in your pain. Thank you for loving my favorite stories 😭. Chenle’s same situation. The y/n is me about 3 years ago... Chenle another innocent guy I dragged down with me. I know it’s fucked up but it’s therapeutic in a way to write about those times.. I want to write from that perspective again but I don’t want to mess up the hold your breath ending I always use.

Your biases are so close to mine!! I swear I will write a dark fic for Renjun if it’s the last thing I do. I think I may extend the Holiday Blues with him mostly because there’s another drug I am familiar with. But there’s def no winter holiday’s left soooo I’ll think of something.

Jisung would be top three if he wasn’t so innocent. It sounds weird but I’ve corrupted a lot of people (like ruined their lives) and idk he seems so naive. Honestly I will probably will write an angst fic for him (without smut obviously). Renjun was my first bias outside wayv like he was the reason why I put down my wayv stick (not really can’t afford that shit). He has a strange quiet intellengnce to him, idk I could never pick him a part. Chenle is like a Yangyang equivalent (everyone says Haechan but I think Chenle is more similar) but he’s more outgoing and comfortable.

5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?  Oh definitely. If not on AO3 itself, then def in PM on discord. I get the feeling of not wanting to sound repetitive, but when you write for a rare pair like I do, I want every person who comments to know how much I appreciate it

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? All of my fics end happily. Hell, only one fic I’ve written (Ghosts From The Past) even has angst in it 

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written? 

I wrote a DBZ/highschool dxd fic back in 2014. my first fic. its still up but i havent updated in almost 2 years and might take it down

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? on FFN yeah, not on AO3. just typical flame comments

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?  nope lol. I’d get too embarrassed + plus smut ends up being more funny than sexy for me lol

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? 

Yup. On FFN, i happened to click on a mutual’s fic and found my chapter copied word for word with the names changed. I was PISSED, and said if he didnt change it id report his account. He eventually did, and said it was just insipration but thats bullshit

11. Have you ever had a fic translated? nope, ive had people ask about translating my FFN fic but i didnt feel comfortable so I turned it down

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? actually yeah once! with @redaloves for a winter themed DB event last year

13. What is your all time favorite ship? hmm I guess gochi

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? “Twins Through Time.” Ive had the idea for years after a discord joke but I just keep putting it off 

15. What are your writing strengths? Dialogue and plots! 

16. What are your writing weaknesses? definitely all the describing words type of stuff about their thoughts and emotions lol. I’m never sure what’s enough

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?  it has to be organic. Those fics with random Japanese words in a context where it doesnt fit completely takes me out of the story. like “Oh my Kami” just stop

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Dragon Ball

19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?  School Days ! I love the Mutual Pining and its just a really fun fic to go back and re-read

oooooooo thats hard lmfao yeah ur right all my fav dgm fics are on that list lololol damn ten is a big number let’s see if i can do this esdrfg i’m gonna kinda chop and mix between the authors of my favourite fics and the best fics from my favourite authors, but i cant keep it to one fandom sorry lololol anD also i cant really ???? put them in a specific order???? lmao i love all the authors for their various styles and stories, but let’s see how i go ahahaha

1. Methoxyethane!! my bias!!!! she’s written the best porn i’ve ever read, ever and i can’t even say specifically which fic it was because, like. It’s tied between at least three lmfao. But!! if you’d like to read something from her id def recommend A Fish and A Bird as a place to start (or if you wanna go straight to the hard stuff, Hot like Magenta is… really fucking good. Like. really fucking good). (Voltron, Keith/Lance)

2. Hurryup because im STILL CRYING BECAUSE OF SHUTDOWN IT’S NEVER GONNA END OKAY I !!! LOVE !!!! THIS !!! FIC !!!!! (D Gray Man, Tyki/Allen)

3. surveycorpsjean im not going to lie and say ive read much, or even more than one thing, but Fresh Air (Mystic Messenger, 707/MC) changed my life okay it really did lmfao

4. gyzym from back in my Inception days - honestly it’s still a fact that Inception has the most consistently incredible fics as i’ve ever freaking seen in any fandom, ever. Like, i could probably fill this entire list with authors and fics that have changed my life and made me fall in love in so many ways, over and over, but if you want to read the best coffee shop AU in existence then look no further because it is I’ve Got Nothing To Do Today But Smile (Inception, Arthur/Eames)

5. rageprufrock because gyzym reminded me of Inception and i can’t NOT say Presque Vu because while Nothing to Do is the best AU in existence, this is such a perfectly canon fic that i literally just. it’s canon. it is. Everything about it is perfect and flawless and fuCk im. If you’re ever thinking of a reference to an inception fic and cant remember which, it’s probably Presque Vu. (Inception, Arthur/Eames)

6. tothemoon for literally everything. im not kidding, i mean it. everything. Every single fic i read was beautiful to a degree i cant even explain. It’s poetic, it’s profound, it’s deeply meaningful and just. Beautiful. I recommend On Lightning, On Luster or 35mm depending i guess on ur ship preference but like ??? it lit doesn’t even matter what u choose everything in their archive is perfect. (Haikyuu, Iwaizumi/Oikawa, Bokuto/Akaashi)

7. literally myself because i can’t keep choosing inception authors cause that’s not fair lol and if i didn’t love my own writing i wouldnt have this massive ego and also would probably be dead lmfao and of COURSE im going to say make it out alive because its my CHILD, okay, its my BABY. (D Gray Man, Tyki/Allen)

8. Scientia_Fantasia because [Fire Emoji x3] is wonderful. It beautifully tackles some really hard subjects and has amazing and perfectly represented trans and autistic characters, not to mention an age gap relationship which isn’t just shrugged aside as nothing big, but actually plays a large part in the development of the characters AND their relationship. (Kingdom Hearts, Axel/Roxas)

9. clandestine7 i really cant go past because Long Distance is, to this day, one of my favourite fics in the entire Free! fandom, it’s just. i don’t even know if it’s finished and it’s been two years since i touched free and this fic has stayed with me that entire time. Its just… fucking flawless. It’s beautiful. It’s wonderful. (Free!, Rin/Haru)

10. I wanted to choose something big for 10, and i was kinda stumped for a while cause I thought i’d already said all the authors i have a deep emotional attachment to lol. But looking at Long Distance again after so long pretty much opened my mind to all these memories of the Free fandom and how beautiful it could be. And i think, in that, the most beautiful fic i read not only in this fandom but in any - Phosphorite is to Free what tothemoon is for Haikyuu. A fucking poet who can bring you to tears not only from the emotion in their stories but the way they write it. Wind Waves was a large part of my life for a long time - i think it’s written in my heart, and I don’t know how I forgot it, but here it is. Something big. (Free!, Rin/Haru)
