You know what I want to see, I want to see more of Steve, Eddie, and Robin being 1980s small town kids from Indiana, by which I mean;

Robin is The Source of Gay Knowledge purely because her parents host Hippie Christmas and she managed to sneak away to find a neat bookstore in Indiana once. 

Her knowledge is not in depth. It's patchy, woven together through rumors, stories she heard or things she picked up from her parents' old pictures. She's got a handful of zines, one book, and some movies she managed to order for Family Video behind Keith's back.

She acts like she's Queen of the Queers because in Hawkins she pretty much is.

(Max and El ask her what a lavender marriage is once, something they overheard snooping around. 

Robin confidentially answers that it's code for when one woman dresses up as a man, fooling officials into wedding two woman.

She does not live this down two years later when they find out what it actually means.) 

Eddie doesn't spend every weekend in Indianapolis. 

Gas is expensive, his busiest days of his "job" is Friday and Saturday, and he has no fucking clue what the hanky code is. 

He's wearing that bandana because Metallica front singer James Hetfield has one on all their tour posters. 

Eddie does make it down to a gay bar though, by accident. Rick needed some back up for a shady deal. Promised Eddie a boatload of free drugs to sell if he agreed to just stand there and look mean. 

He was warned the bar they were meeting in was 'weird' and to not 'freak out' --which Eddie thought was hilarious given his nickname and general appearance, but whatever.

He doesn't understand when they get there, because it's just a bunch of hot men with hanky's in their back pockets everywhere.

Then he sees two women kissing and it clicks. 

He can't out himself in front of Rick, but one of the bartenders playfully dresses him down for his own hanky, letting him know all about the code and teasing him through his embarrassment. 

He's got an offer to come back and learn what color and which pocket his hanky should actually be in, a prospect Eddie was salivating at until Chrissy Cunningham up and died on his ceiling.

(He still wore the hanky, because the feeling of that bartender tugging it out and stuffing it back in might be the closest thing he's ever had to sex and he absolutely wants a repeat. 

He's young and horny, sue him.) 

Steve Harrington may not be academically smart but he's not dumb. 

He figured out a while back that the basketball team as a unit probably crossed the queer line more than once--or at least it did before Hargrove came in. 

( Brad Handly for example, went around slamming kids into lockers and screaming slurs like a fucking movie villain one Monday because the varsity team got dead drunk at Laura's party on Sunday and hey, look, there weren't that many girls there, okay?

They all had fucking hands and mouths. Everybody but Tommy was single and hot to trot. Nothing gay about it.

Its not even like they were kissing or treating each other like chicks. It was just Brad's first time and they got to tease him later for overthinking it. 

Dude graduated soon enough after and given Steve was on the team as a sophomore, he hadn't thought about the guy and why he might be freaking out so bad in years.) 

Robin's entire panic attack at Starcourt, and a few more after had Steve replaying that whole incident. Reframed it a bit, and, yeah.

In retrospect that had been extremely gay, actually. 

It sat with him a lot easier than he'd thought it would. Partially because of Robin, but mostly because that's just who he was.

Stranger things had happened to Steve and this one didn't want to kill, maim or otherwise eat him, so it got filed under 'interesting facts he should never tell his parents if he wanted to keep his trust fund' and then he went about his day. 

(Or he tried too, anyways.

It caught up to him when Eddie and Robin somehow figured out the other was queer and dragged him along to some bar Eddie had a standing invitation at, with demands for Steve to do what he did best.

Babysit.

Their magical trip was utterly destroyed when Brad Handly happened to be the very same bartender who had given Eddie the invite.

 Considering Brad's immediate bark of laughter followed by a hug and introducing himself as "Steve's gay awakening", Steve ended up having to speedrun through Eddie and Robin both having a crisis for him.

It didn't help that Steve had politely, and laughingly, corrected Brad with a casual; 

"Pretty sure that was Tommy man, but if it helps I think that tongue of yours gave Matt Burdon a crisis."

--which ended up with him answering a lot more gay sex questions with Brad than he cared too. 

At least he, through Brad, was able to help Robin connect to some local lesbians and--after a second crisis from Eddie regarding how Steve managed to have more sex than "the resident town freak and guy who actually knew he was gay, Steve!"-- even helped Eddie out by catching the metalheads tongue with his mouth later that evening.

So I’m having the eye opening, I keep seeing Eddie being the trans man out of Steddie. (Who has a kid) And honestly, love that but hear me out about the possibilities.

What if Steve was in like major stealth mode. Passed so well no one thinks about it. Things are great until he goes partying at a place where he knows people don’t have a problem with him being trans. Now normally he tops with a toy but he gets drunk and he doesn’t mind bottoming. It’s not his preference because his dysphoria gets the best of him some times but he ends up having a one night stand and gets pregnant. Now no one knows he’s trans, and he’s not sure how to bring it up. He’s avoiding it and now he’s having to hide more and more. Though thing is everyone’s caught on and holding a intervention. Because something is up and they think it might be a code red for the upside down. They are not having another max situation. Because it seems like Steve is closing himself off. They all snuck in the house, because they’ve tried everything and Steve never lets them in unless it’s for something important. So none of them are expecting to see a half awake, half asleep steve coming down stairs with a tank top on. Stretching around his belly. That’s pretty big. Hand on it, hair pulled in a bun as he hasn’t left the house in a long time and is to lazy to cut it. He’s waddling as he moves to the calendar. Whining when he realizes he has a doctors appointment. “I suppose it’s time to figure out your gender so I can stop calling you a gremlin.” He smiles looking down at his belly. It doesn’t hit the younger kids, but it’s slapping all of the adults who are now quickly pulling the kids back who are getting kicked out silently. He’s booking it out of the room slamming his door shut behind him. Coming back down with a baggier sweater pointing at the door and screaming for everyone to get the fuck out. Nearly in tears. Anywho time skip to steve having the baby and everyone falls in love. Everyone never calls steve mom again, all jokingly call him dad. Though on occasion they’ll joke about him being their mom, but not in a way that makes Steve uncomfortable. The baby being baby sat by Joyce and Hopper excitedly. Hopper who isn’t fond of the child but is always found sleeping in his rocker with the brat curled up on his chest. Now Murray and the kids are the only ones not allowed to be near the baby unsupervised. Murray because Steve doesn’t trust him. He’s the crazy uncle that’s to crazy while Eddie is crazy but not crazy enough to put a baby in danger.

Just a gay Eddie who doesn’t change his sexuality all because Steve is trans. Steve is a guy through and through which still makes Eddie gay. He’s happy either way. There’s more in life then just sex and he doesn’t mind getting railed by the other. Though he’s the one that gets the closest to the baby. She/he love him the most. Playing with his curls, giggiling when ever he messes around with her. He Carrie’s the child by the diaper like a purse sometimes. Just him helping with the child, though Wayne meets the baby when Steve comes over to beg Eddie to help him get them to sleep. Eddies not home but Wayne is and puts the kid asleep fast. Kiriyama Rei from March Comes in Like a Lion - Probably my favourite character possibly of all time. Introverted, kind of ace-coded right up until the end of the manga when it changes (and since the anime never ended he stays ace-coded throughout that lmao), very human, extremely depressed, and I just think he's a very good depiction of like...what it's like to live with extremely repressive depression and post-trauma while not necessarily knowing you have those things.

Dazai Osamu from Bungou Stray Dogs - He's a brilliant intellect genius with too much ability to know so much about the world that he kind of ends up suicidal all the time due to his upbringing / some of the things he's done and also what he's experienced. I just enjoy him. (Notable runner up here is Nakahara Chuuya but dslkajf)

Felix Harrowgate from the Doctrine of Labyrinths trilogy - Angsty, PTSD, waspish, 'I'm going to hurt you because I was hurt and then hate myself and do very self-destructive things about it but keep that part a secret so I just look like a constant dickhead,' brilliant, very good at magic. Love this dude. Would walk hundreds of miles for this dude, like the song. Would definitely write a long-ass fanfic about him.

Daeshik from Love So Pure - I love this guy SO much. He's a side-story / secondary pairing in the manhwa but I LOVE him because he's so against type. He's dorky but not in a very cute way, he's overbearing, he's SO neurodivergent coded it's painful and sometimes hilarious, he's determined and ambitious, he's not 'hot' in any typical kind of twink way, and I know he's split the fandom between 'god he's so annoying' and 'Daeshik is the BEST.' The whole webtoon is fucking amazing anyway, but Daeshik has my whole heart in his journey from 'dorky annoying overbearing friend' to 'oh I just realised I'm gay and now everything is Pride Pride Pride and I'm definitely crying next to a dildo I bought that was too big for me.'

Loki from the MCU - Not necessarily every iteration, but I do love how Tom Hiddleston plays him, and I appreciate the queerer representation. Adore this guy. Look at him, what an absolute dickhead of a god. 10/10 would read him in hurt/comfort fics and PWPs again.

Hyunsoo Seo and Youngchan Baek from Perfect Buddy / XXX Buddy - Possibly my favourite manhwa of all time and I really hope that stays true because it's not finished yet. Idk how to describe these characters because they're both very complex as you get to know them better, but basically 'angry wet cat man with past trauma that he hides exceptionally well vs. Gwyn-dimensioned blond puppy dog who is just pretending to be a puppy dog because he knows exactly how threatening he is and is willing to be to protect the people he loves.'

Murderbot in the Murderbot novella series - I think all of us - or most of us - find Murderbot incredibly relatable and that's refreshing as fuck in any novel series tbh. (ART as runner-up though, love that fucker).

Sebastian Michaelis from Kuroshitsuji / Black Butler - Honestly there were a lot of kind of 'extremely powerful but kind of shitty fuckboys' I wanted to put in this category including Gojou Satoru from JJK, Reigen from MP100, and even Louis from Beastars, but Sebastian's gonna win out because I still don't know if he's going to eat Ciel at the end of that series and I very much love not knowing because he's such a devious fuckhead. Love that not-actually-a-man.

Yuurakutei Yakumo (Kikuhiku) from Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - I just... *flails* Almost no one has seen this anime series and it kind of kills me because firstly the books were written by someone practiced in writing BL and even though this isn't BL you can still tell the vibes are there. Secondly, one of the most ace-coded characters ever. Gender-fuckery abounds, which is fun. Thirdly just, honestly, more folks should watch this?

What personality traits do you think make someone Stede coded or Ed coded(??

Well, the act of self-recognition through the other is so deeply personal that I think everyone you ask would give a different answer! I can tell you what I think but there's no guarantee it's what you (or anyone else) would find compelling!

For me, I deeply sympathize with both Ed and Stede and find a lot to relate to in both their arcs! But I think I'm more Stede-coded because:

His arc has a lot to do with how self-loathing can make you selfish. I think it's something anyone with self-esteem issues could easily relate to and find important.

He's a bitchy cunty queen! I'm a feminine gay man who talks and acts quite a bit like Stede and I love it! On the other hand, some people might relate more to his deep repression at the start of the show and his journey of queer self-discovery.

He really tries to choose kindness in a world that hasn't shown him a lot of it.

He can't be anyone other than himself, even though he's really tried.

Lots of fake-it-till-you-make-it confidence.

Soft, and he doesn't see that as a bad thing!

Alright I’ve had a lot of time to ponder wtf I was gonna answer this ask with. I really like Asmodeus’ character, especially when he’s allowed to ACTUALLY show other parts of himself other than ‘hypersexual queer-coded flirt.’ That is, unfortunately, a very limited number of times. I like him more gross and fucked up than a lot of people seem to.

Onto his characterization in the fandom……oh god where do I start…… this dude has the WORST characterization of any other fucking character. Worse than LUCIFER bad. There’s so many ways people misconstrue and twist his character it’s fucking insane.

To start with the one I see the most: the sterile gay friend approach…..can y’all knock this bullshit off guys I’m being dead serious lol. It’s bad enough that the only queer-coded male character is the LUST guy (Lucifer is not queer-coded, baiting and coding are different stop typing your reply) but y’all just had to make it worse by writing him as a sterile gay best friend to Mc in so many fucking fics. ASMODEUS IS BISEXUAL. THIS IS A BISEXUAL CHARACTER!!! ASMODEUS IS BISEXUAL AND HE IS INTERESTED BOTH SEXUALLY AND ROMANTICALLY IN MC!!! Stop this borderline-homophobic and biphobic bullshit I’m tired of it!! Asmo would not help Mc get ready to date another man lmao he would cling to their leg screaming and crying all the way there if he knew they were going on a date with anyone other than him.

Tying into that, there’s the weird…idk…ignoring(??) or babyification of Asmodeus’ bad traits. Like how he’s always seen as the victim or something. This dude is an manipulative little shit lol?? In the end, I can’t tell people what to write lol. These are just things I find particularly annoying when looking at how people write and view him. Hopefully, it will at least get some people into thinking about how the writing of tropes and stereotypes into their work, especially regarding queer-coded characters, can harm real people.

buncha guys are on a train to Quesadilla Island. there is a Huge Wall in the middle of the island. a duck greets them and says "whatever you do don't press the big red button". they press the big red button. the wall Crumbles. yay! duck comes back and says "wtf now you Can Never Leave The Island". also theres a ton of like ruins/old crusty buildings on the island and their first task was to restore electricity so like. there probably Used To Be People Here.

then! new Building appears! duck says "you idiots woke up a dragon and it flew away. now you gotta take care of her eggs". new building turns out to be an adoption center!! there are two parents per egg and each parent has to be from a different language (at the time it was only spanish and english). i forget who the parents were (this was long before i was In The Fandom) but essentially government assigned gay marriage. anyway they have to take care of the eggs and keep them happy and stuff so they don't Die

also there's a guy named cucurucho who's like one of the top federation guys. hes a bitch. then theres another cucurucho (osito bimbo) whos not a bitch. he appears out of nowhere and speaks in like pre generated text to speech voice lines and also writes and gives people books to communicate

also! an enemy is made called The Code or the Binary Entity! it's. well. exactly what it sounds like. a floating mess of ones and zeroes in black and green. and it is Violent and attacks the eggs

spoiler. some of the eggs die. its very sad. there is conflict. i am going to skip to where i joined the fandom because i don't know too much about the Middle Parts

so the eggs go missing. horrible awful tragedy. everyone is upset (and begins to go Insane). forever is so angry and sad he goes and pretty much attacks cucurucho. he then gets drugged on Happy Pills and becomes an absolute weirdo. pac goes and gets kidnapped/drugged on purpose and finds a Cure. yay! the get the leftover Happy Pills and put them in a very secure safe. it is not very secure. bbh immediately steals the pills just to prove that he could. the safe is later reinforced further. also when forever was detoxing he screamed that cucurucho told him that the eggs weren't kidnapped they ran away because of an Even Worse Danger. which some of the islanders believe and some dont

bbh does not buy it and kidnaps a federation worker who he named ron and we later found out is WB011. the workers dont get names and there are tiers D-A, d is the lowest A is the highest. also bbh has fully lost all the color on his skin and is torturing himself with soul vultures and is now covered in his own corrupted blood and torn clothes. hes also canonically completely colorblind

while this is happening tubbo is flirting with fred, another federation worker (WA02). so he's a fed worker defender 100%.

tubbo breaks into fred's office and finds two books: one saying bbh is suspicious and possibly dangerous and advising workers to avoid him. then next book says worker WB011 has not clocked in or out of work for several days and is missing. he draws the conclusion that bbh has kidnapped WB011.

unfortunately bbh had some sort of psychotic episode and. um. ate ron.

also tubbo, slimescicle and. fuck i forget the third person. got coordinates from a chest surrounded by black concrete. each of them had one of the 3 coordinates (x, y, and z) and it took them like 45 minutes to connect the dots. they are led to the entrance of a Maze. when they get through the maze they find a circular room with a wheel numbered 1-8 in roman numerals, surrounded by the eggs signature belongings. obviously they all Freak Out and try to find a way to get in. tubbo enderpearls through the barriers and spins the wheel. lava pours down from everywhere. rip

a little later everyone goes in the maze and finds a room thats like some sort of control room with a big red button. when they press it theres a dialogue that said "i think i found something about the eggs disappearance. lets continue this conversation on the main channel"

at some point they find the circular room again and it has the wheel again but this time the only egg belonging is chayenne's rubber ducky. strange.

more black concrete keeps appearing, then a huge alien structure appears. THEN. they find a message on black concrete FROM THE EGGS!!! wherever they are they can't get back and can only send one message at a time. two more alien structures end up appearing.

tubbo digs a giant hole with a world eater that bbh and aypierre hate so he names it the controversial hole.

bbh is slowly testing everyone on the island to see who he can trust and who he can't, and is implying to everyone that he will burn the world down and kill everyone to get the eggs back. we support his wrongs

philza gets kidnapped and put in a bird house for like a week, thinks it's a bad dream and can't really remember what happened.

bagi arrives with nothing but a frying pan and determination. she somehow has the code for the main channel, but they don't know what to input the code in to make it work.

etoiles now has a love/hate relationship with the codes and enjoys fighting them for fun. he kills one and the only thing it drops are its sword, shield, and a book saying "protect". he takes that to mean protect everyone on the island.

at this point everyone is incredibly suspicious of everyone else btw.

also yesterday bagi told fred that tubbo was in love with him and this morning tubbo got a letter from fred rejecting him and signed it "WA02". my ship has crashed and burned i'm so sad. he has also heavily implied he will Ruin Bagi for this

discussion #3 (only friends): each other's first true love— a topmew downfall

according to p'force and first, only friends is scheduled to air around the mid of august or early september. it's likely to be true because they're currently at the 19th q, which indicates there are only a few q's left before they wrap the shooting process. (i think, maybe, the official trailer will drop around the first week of august [which is next week, omo], and i'm preparing myself for the utmost worst). p'jojo also hinted the draft is looking good, so, yeah //screams).

we get updates from the official twitter page of only friends, the director (mostly p'nine), and other staff working on this drama. mainly, we get glimpses of topmew's (seemingly) domestic dates, and i'm honestly delighted to see them smiling. i think every topmew apologist (not just mew or top, hahaha) is content with the domesticity they're showing.

however, i guess by now, it's in my nature to look at the darker side of topmew's bright exterior. every picture comes with a daunting realisation that there will be pain, and that pain will hurt not just topmew but everyone rooting for them.

so, in this post, i would like to lightly touch on how topmew are each other's first true love and the implication of their blossoming affection on their fragile relationship.

a brief preface of mew and top's love life

so, our angel baby mew, (i think i'm a mew apologist so he's very precious and baby-coded in my eyes), according to boston, has one of the dullest love (and sex) lives ever. how can a fourth-year university student, a senior, has never been laid? well, i don't quite understand that perspective because i'm just like mew but we'll just leave it there.

mew is speculated as:

someone who's never been in a romantic relationship.

(possibly) a virgin.

doesn't care much about relationships (before boston questioned mew about it).

has a traditional understanding of romantic relationships (doesn't like the idea of a one-night stand).

top is his first boyfriend and first love (?).

thus, this is some basic information we can gather from the mock trailer about mew. can anyone relate to mew? because i do. (except i'm still single to this day tmi.)

top

oh, yes. our certified heartbreaker. i think many of us have painted top as a bad guy from the get-go, but as i've discussed in my previous post, there are so many layers to top (and mew) than what meets the eye. and let's be real, everyone is a fragment of the good and bad. so, top is too.

but let's extract some details regarding top's love life from the first trailer:

fond of one-night stands and casual/open relationships.

something must have happened to him (either in his first relationship, his sexuality (his coming-out) or his family background (strict parents, etc) that shapes top as someone who's so deprived of genuine affection.

(my guess is) top has never felt true love and empathy from his previous partners/family, not until mew.

boston's fuck buddy.

mew is (probably) his first true love.

i like to entertain the idea of top not believing in love because of his experience with his previous partners or his parents (rejecting the idea of same-sex relationship).

judging from the photos, colour grading and clothing style, i assume only friends is set in the '80s or '90s. i made this guess because p'jojo said he could feel the vibe of gay ok bangkok while filming the series (i can't find where i read this. i apologise). additionally, it's the time when lgbtq+ is still looked down upon (everywhere, but more so in asia), and so many people are struggling with their identity (from my brief reading of thailand's social history).

however, looking back at p'jojo's never let me go, i guess this won't be a pertinent issue to the whole premise of the drama. it'll only affect several characters (top is one of them).

the idea of being each other's first true love: a promise of happiness and heartbreak

in my previous discussion, i highlighted the changes topmew will experience after their first encounter. from two different worlds, there are bound to be misunderstandings and mistakes made. but, as this is a new experience for both of them, they'll make rash decisions— a break-up.

i think, when we're in our first relationship, we can't quite grasp the essence of blending and adapting to our partner's behaviours. it'll be difficult to accept some of their flaws and tolerate their downsides. without honesty and openness, a relationship can't work no matter how much we love each other. and that's the first downfall of topmew's relationship; they believe only love can save them.

top: a promise of happiness

i mainly see only positive effects happening to top. i don't know when they'll go steady, but from the photos i see, after their fateful first meeting, top is ready to let mew into his life.

personally, i'm still puzzled about top. i don't know what makes him agree to mew's "can you wait? i think we can be more than a one-night stand?" because i see him as someone who doesn't comply with anyone if it's not beneficial to him. therefore, i guess top sees mew as another 'fun' time, not quite like boston, but someone he can 'play' with. but the more he learns about mew, his heart starts beating a bit too fast and it's silly and before top knows it— he likes mew. he genuinely likes mew.

side note: i also hope the drama will emphasise on how attractive mew is. i want to be ensured that mew is so likeable and desirable that everyone (read: top and ray) can't get enough of him. i want the drama to show the alluring side of mew, with dashes of innocence and cuteness, which can convince me why top falls hard for mew and why ray can't see san the way he looks at mew.

exhibit #1: the (first) awe

both of them are wearing fond (and sated) smiles on their faces. absolutely adorable. but i notice a more gentle, subdued shine from top— he looks very enamoured. stupidly fond of mew that his eyes turn to crescents and the smile on his face oozes with astonishment. their first kiss might be really sweet (and spicy?) that top can't quite wrap his head around mew.

exhibit #2: the 'oh-oh, i like him?'

in the mock trailer, we know mew is a smart (and nerdy?) student. and because of his lack of experience in dating, he might like these cute dates (retrieved from his research/reading), which i find endearingly sweet. i assume their dates will be cafe hunting, library dates, a stroll around the park and lounging at mew's apartment (with some spice and everything nice).

it's very interesting to see top's gaze softens (and intensify with adoration) in the photos of them together. this one in particular illustrates a gear shifting in top's brain. it might be from a moment of epiphany— oh. mew is so... cute? that realisation you have when a thing/person makes you feel so happy that you start being possessive and want them all to yourself? i think top is going through that phase.

exhibit #3: the 'i'm glad it's you' look

i personally like this photo the most because it's just topmew basking in each other's presence. a casual date, just the two of them amid the crowd. two cups of juice/soda (?) on the table— green— which commonly indicates balance, harmony, and equality; a mirror to their feelings for one another.

i can't stress enough that before their downfall, at one point in their relationship, they do love each other. they really do. (i don't know why this breaks my heart to say.)

exhibit #4: the 'i'm not supposed to be jealous/angry but i am'

this photo still remains a mystery to me because i'm unsure of its story. it's either ray visits mew's apartment when topmew have just gone back from their date or topmew are in mew's apartment before ray comes over. either or, top doesn't look happy sharing the same space with ray.

perhaps topmew are ready to go on a date but ray stops them?

i guess, before top meets mew, he confronts boston. he doesn't look happy, though. and it's a pattern i'm seeing recently; top doesn't appear happy when he's with boston. this didn't happen before mew.

theories speculate that topmew and bostonnick are in the same place. it's highly likely topmew are having another (supposedly fun) date. but it's ruined when top sees boston and nick. i don't think it's out of jealousy (i hope not) from top's behalf. it's more to anger and fear because what if mew learns about top and boston— here— out of all places? of course, it's a devastation to mew.

this is new to top. he's never afraid of people. never been conscious about himself. but he's afraid of mew. why? because he loves mew, and he doesn't want mew to know he's an asshole that still has some lingering relationship with boston, mew's friend. he doesn't want mew to see that dark side of top coming to life. he can't bear the thought of losing mew because of his (hidden) persona.

from top's point of view, i can conclude that he's getting positive outcomes after encountering mew.

sidetrack: topmew's colour theory (slightly) coming to life

and i would like to add from my colour theory: top is wearing a black and white shirt in this photo— a harmony of the good and bad.

also, i would like to highlight top's shirt is dominantly white which means he's becoming/showing more of his good side after knowing mew. i'm actually proud to see top in these shades, a brighter colour. he's embracing his inner self and mew has been a lot of help. his love for mew brings him out of his dark hole.

but sadly, mew is wearing darker colours. the blue in this photo isn't entirely bright. oh.

and his bag— read me— is like a cry for honesty. mew wants nothing but honesty from top, a person he genuinely likes. but top has always been anything but honest. and that's top's biggest misstep.

mew: a promise of his first heartbreak

i'm glad we haven't seen many sad photos of topmew (as of now). it's intentional because their (possible) break-up is the climax of this story.

hence, i'm extracting still shots from the trailer because mew is visibly heartbroken while confronting top as he discovers about top and boston. but i do find it intriguing that even in the trailer, we don't see much of sad mew.

this is going to be the pinnacle of the drama: mew seeking the truth.

in this post, i've mentioned that mew will confront top at the university.

from the paleness of their faces and the red in their eyes, this is taken after their tearful confrontation. i'm so excited to see this scene unfold because forcebook broke my heart with their raw acting in a boss and a babe (ep 9, you'll forever be epic). this one will be ten times more gut-wrenching, i believe.

it's not nonchalance, but i find mew's expression so watered down? i expect him to be more volatile, in despair and bawl his eyes out after the break-up but here, he goes to the bar and has a drink or two and he just looks so aloof but nothing more?

and i think that's the scariest thing about mew. we don't know what's going on in his mind. the kindest person can be the most evil— mew's vengeance might begin shortly after this.

when the truth unfolds, a heartbreaking chaos

top will endure the hardest blow after their breakup. it's because when their relationship ends, it's when top's feelings begin to overwhelm him. he likes mew, but he can't hold onto him. why?

side note: these days, i feel sorry for top. the more i think about him, the more i understand the inner struggles he's facing. i can't really say i'm a top apologist, but i do understand him. and i want to hug him if i can.

i would like to underline that change is one of the most difficult things to do. let it be me, you or other people, only the bravest will choose a different path— diverging from normality— a route full of surprises and challenges. we're so accustomed to the comfort of simplicity and normalcy that change isn't preferable, yes?

looking from top's perspective, it's hard for him to discard his shell— a safe cacophony of his— despite coming to terms with his feelings for mew. i do want to believe top is taking baby steps to let go of his previous lifestyle, but as long as boston is still around, top can't really escape.

habits die hard— i don't know if i can call it a habit, but i think top might come back to boston just because boston feels like a second skin, once a place to stay. no matter how in love top is with mew, boston is before mew and after mew. something must've tied him around boston so tightly that top can't simply let go. he wants to, but he can't.

despite everything, top still comes back to boston. even if they no longer share the same virtues, boston has become so much of top that if letting go of boston means he's letting go of himself too.

and in top's indecisiveness lies mew's reluctance to forgive. as i've mentioned, mew's idea of a romantic relationship is somewhat naive and unrealistic. yet, it's not absurd because many of us share that ideology: first love should be beautiful, sincere and transparent.

mew handles this heartbreak with anger and so many questions because he thought love should be truthful and kind and gentle but why two of his most precious people are hurting him? mew no longer sees boston as a friend, and top is no longer the love of his life. mew's greatest downfall is his love for top and his trust for boston.

conclusion

i find the concept of first love/true love depicted from the lens of topmew to be heartbreaking. when the pictures of them having fun and enjoying their cute dates together are posted, aside from happiness, i feel an immense sadness for what's to come.

mew is top's first true love in the sense that top discovers his truest self with mew. he gradually opens up and becomes someone he's supposed to be— not need to be. mew is top's first true love in the sense that it scares top to think of the consequences— of his dishonesty to mew— of the truth coming out someday and he'll lose mew— himself— forever.

top is mew's first love in the sense that mew wants to savour every little moment with top, all the fun dates and kisses that awaken the butterflies in his stomach. top is mew's first love in the sense that he wants to pen down everything they share in his journal because mew believes this might be forever— top is his first and true love.

therefore, everything topmew is— their love— only results in two things; happiness and sadness.

side note: although i still don't know if any of my topmew speculations are true, the mock trailer indicates topmew's love story as the 'right person, wrong time'. i'm inclining to topmew's story to be sweet but tragic because it's the driving force of the series. topmew, sanray and bostonnick revolve around each other. like a domino effect, anything that happens to topmew will affect other pairs and vice versa.

I NEED WIELDER AND ROSE TO MEET ABBY’S FAMILY ASAP! I know that they would both just be so overwhelmed with love from Abby’s (most likely) massive family. Rose especially would be so flustered from all the attention and love, having not come from a home that gave that love freely and unconditionally. It would probably be so refreshing for her. I KNOW Abby’s mom is gonna be feeding all of them well, too!

OMG IMAGINE!! Abby’s mom doing the usual embarrassing family stuff like pulling out baby pictures, and telling embarrassing stories, and Abigail obviously red in the face but still taking it on the chin until her mom pulls out the voicemail that Abigail had sent her when she first moved to Glenwood and all of them lose their shit in very different ways. Abigail is embarrassed beyond belief, Rose is also flustered from the “going at it” bit, and Wielder can’t stop laughing hysterically.

OPLA - episode 5 first impressions

SPOILERS AHEAD.

I love that they're amateurs in this, literal kids playing pirates, with Nami being their only braincell. Several times over. Amazing. (Also, bonus point for the boob window.)

Oooooooh, we're getting official First Mate acknowledgement - even if it was meant to push Zoro towards his "job description", I am all here for it. These guys are not built to "talk emotions", never have been, never will be. And yet, Luffy still remembers every single word Zoro said to him when they first met, huh...

Sanji ("little eggplant"!!!) being a British lad swearing until the start of dawn is not something I knew I needed in my life, holy shit. He's sappy af of course, but I am glad they didn't overdo it with him.

Both Nami and Zoro being not amused by Sanjis demeanour - and the latter ACTUALLY teasing her! - is also pretty damn amazing. Bonus points for Luffy (pure, charming, milk-drinking Luffy) having no idea what "boyfriend" means.

The scene with Mihawk (also gay-coded as fuck, just like all swordsmen in this show so far... "And when I'm done with you, I'll take your captain", "though I do like your hat", huh) was the first time the CGI kinda bothered me, everything prior to it has been solid in my eyes so far.

Generally, still a big fan of the cautious-yet-on-the-same-page kinda relationship they show Nami and Zoro to have. It's just a very interesting angle, Zoro actually responding to and being curious about Nami, them throwing shade at both Luffy and Usopp is just, actually playing GUESSING GAMES about each other (and them actually being HONEST about it), is unusual but appreciated. "Why do you even care?" - "Because you're my friend, you idiot." MAN, I love their portrayal here so much.

Koby/Helmeppo relationship improving, yaaaaay!

Just like the Nami/Kaya parallel, I liked the Luffy/Sanji parallel they did here. It was very simple in execution, but that's how all set-ups between Luffy and the others have been so far, bonding over goals and dreams.

Zeff's such a Gordan Ramsey, screaming at the adult in Sanji, but being all adorable about him being his son, gaaaah.

And Nami really, really grew fond of the boys, you can feel that the power of friendship is catching up on her and it HURTS. Her holding Usopp's hand as they watched Zoro getting striked down...

Fight choreography is still stellar. And man, adding the heartbeat to the stabbing scene between MIhawk and Zoro was KILLER.

It's a shame they didn't show Sanji watching the strike down, but man... Luffy jumping to Zoro's side means everything, as always. "He said it's too early for you to die!" "If I fail to become the greatest swordsman, you'll be disappointed." "You could never fail me." "Never." Guys, that's where he fell. He fell hard. Oh, the PAIN.

This post has been popping up on my dash every few days for the past MONTH and it's been kinda annoying me because it's so clear to me that this person does not read comics and is essentially angry over a game of telephone. We can have a conversation about asexual Shatterstar without pretending that FUCKING ROB LIEFELD EVER INTENTIONALLY WENT "today I will make representation for the asexual aromantic people of the world :)". ROB LIEFELD. He was supposed to be a cool emotionless alien warrior dude in Liefeld's eyes. Liefeld was not thinking about his sexuality when creating him in the 90s alongside all of Liefeld's other cool emotionless/angry (insert adjective) warrior dudes with 50 different belt pockets.

Shatterstar was not made bisexual to erase any asexuality. That isn't what happened. Liefeld CLAIMED he was acearo (not using that term, mind you. He just said he would never fuck, essentially, because "he's a Spartan. And not a gay one.") It was accidental coding at best, and it was used most prominently in a homophobic rant to shit on the choice to make him bisexual.

It'd be very cool if Shatterstar was acearo, and maybe he should've been, because acearo people are very, VERY underrepresented in media and there are only a few even slightly prominent asexual characters in comics, all extremely recently confirmed, but Marvel did not make that choice with him and the choice they did made was not to spite asexuality. It was the 2000s, and cishet comic writers from the 2000s barely knew what bisexual people were, much less asexual. That aside, I personally hc him as aspec as well as bisexual, which is definitely something a lot of people id as!

It's like... this person's mad and I get it because there really are so few acearo characters out there but also... please.... Rob Liefeld was not intentionally making rep for anybody outside of insanely jacked usually white guys who wear a shoe size 4 and who never feel any emotion except for :I or angrily screaming.

It's not much, but I recommend reading Gwenpool's Love Unlimited Infinity comic for a sweet story about her coming out as acearo, Conner Hawke's more recent appearances where he's canonized as asexual (and his old ones have similar accidental coding to Shatterstar, if you're interested!!! Again, not intentional, cause like with Shatterstar and Liefeld, a lot of them were written by a homophobe (Dixon) but still!) and the Pride stuff DC and Marvel put out yearly unusually have at least 1 ace story. And hopefully more prominent asexual characters get added/confirmed soon!

Also, don't be aphobic on this post btw. This is me correcting comic history inaccuracies, not shitting on someone for wanting more asexual comic characters.

Just watched Belle Époque and I recommend everyone to watch it

This is a movie made in 1992, set in 1931’s Spain, and it follows the story of Fernando, a young man who’s deserted from the army who ends up on the middle of the countryside with no place to stay, so he’s taken in by man (because they share similar political ideologies and he’s a good cook) and his four daughters. It doesn’t sound like much but god is it good.

-The characters are so funny, like the father of the sisters talks about how he hates than he was baptized as a kid because he hates the church, how he hates than he couldn’t join the army because of his bad feet, not because he wanted to join, but because then the choice to reject the offer and piss them off was no longer on the table, and how he hates than he can’t get it up unless with his wife, which means than no matter how much he wants to cheat, he can’t.

-The four sisters: One who’s a widow, one’s who’s in a relationship with a guy but does with him whatever she wants (first rejects him, then flirts, then rejects him again, etc), the younger who’s a virgin and who wants to date Fernando, and one who’s more masculine and super queer coded

-Seriously like, Violeta is so gay. She dresses in drag for a party (goes as a man) and then dresses Fernando in drag too (as a woman), then she kisses him but only when he’s dressed as a woman and refers to him in feminine terms (like she said “pero que guapa estas” [“you look so pretty”] and she used guapa [feminine] instead of guapo [masculine]) she also has a scene with her mother where her mother says she’s not fit for marriage, than what she needs is to find a girl who’ll love her and understand her and who’ll help her with the house.

-Also during the party mentioned above, a guy is flirting with Fernando (thinking he’s a girl) so she grabs a bottle and breaks it on his head. After this he tells her “you behaved like a real man” and she said “that’s because I am”. Then there’s a scene of her very sensually helping him put on one of his high heels he misplaced while running away from the whole conflict, and then kissing again and she touched his fake breasts then they slept together and it was possibly the gayest straight scene ever, they were still in drag and she kept on referring to him in feminine terms. This is her in drag vs her usually

-After their kiss he claims he’s in love and when he told her father he was like “oh I knew it which of the sisters is it?” and when he said Violeta everyone was SO SHOCKED because wdym Violeta?? The father tells him than that’s an impossible love, but he doesn’t elaborate, he just asks if he told her because he just can’t believe it, then Fernando talks about what happened the day before and his father at hearing than they slept together just goes around screaming “Miracle! This is a miracle!” because Violeta sleeping with a man??? That must be a miracle for sure. Then she rejects Roberto because what happened the other day happened no thinking about it and he complains than he wants to marry (damn boy calm down) and her father just looks at him and asks “how are you going to marry a man?” Like Violeta being referred as a man is a common occurrence, she calls herself “brother in law” etc. She also handles a rifle at one point.

-The whole movie is good but just for Violeta it’s enough to watch it

-It takes place before the republic, so they are in this ‘will the republic win’ ‘won’t it’ mentality

-Their mother is a singer and has an affair with her manager or smth and the father knows and couldn’t care less

-Everyone wants to fuck Fernando. And each time he sleeps with anyone he claims to be in love with them

-The boyfriend of one of the sisters wants to marry her but she rejects him first and he really wants to marry mostly to escape his overbearing mother. He tries everything, he tries turning his back to the church so his mom will disown him, he tries becoming republican (as in, in favor of the republic) because his gf says so, he’s just trying so hard.

-The set, like the places they used to film the movie are so pretty and realistic to the time.

I watched it in soap2day and while the audio is in Spanish, there do are English subtitles
