I was going to try to draw Felix and/ or Sylvain new looks in a way that pleased me (because... i'm trying to make peace with their 3 hopes designs). But then I ended up painting Dimitri 😓

Okay so, I'm just gonna come out and say it: I really hate the way Rufus was written in Hopes. I think that the way his inclusion was handled was poor to insultingly bad. And I'm putting aside my specific biases, and saying this purely from a narrative standpoint.
I don't mind that he was written as being part of the Tragedy. I do mind that the game does Nothing with that aside from using it as the demo plotline, having it be used as a way to ignore Patsy as much as possible (even tho Houses beat you over the head with that fact Patricia and Cornelia conspired with the Western Lords to cause the Tragedy and the only time Rufus is brought up in relation to that is when Cornelia is using it as an excuse to frame Dimitri for his murder /that she canonically committed btw/), and the fact that Rufus was the only new villain for AG--then killed immediately--as the Western Lords are all faceless generic portraits. So basically non-characters, and this is the only new thing AG tackled cause Edel and the Agarthans do not count as newly treaded waters.
Not to mention that his inclusion being as it was makes certain characters like Rodrigue look like idiots because of how stupidly obvious it is that Rufus maybe possibly conspired to kill Lambert. He literally has The Most to gain from Lambert being dead and Rodrigue never thought to investigate him at all?? All the while Dimitri's life was constantly in peril via the singular person who has the most control over it.
And don't get me started on the art book's implied mind control tiara. Whatever's going on with that isn't actually mentioned or implied in the game (unless you want to count Rufus and Cornelia' convo as potential proof), and nor is it in the popular discourse.

Azure Gleam - Ch 3
It says it's prologue, but it's the third chapter of the game, so that's what I'm calling it.
In case you're wondering. Yes, I despise that person now. First villain I've ever truly HATED in this game.
STORY
I love how Arval calls what happened to Tomas a "conclusion."
Still seems weird they trust Shez so fast.
Though, I wonder if Dimitri recognizes her power as the same as those from Duscur and will suspect her?
Dimitri being a sweetie and checking on Shez. Assuring her that her power isn't evil, it's just a matter of who is using it. And hearing him speak somewhat positively of his own strength this time. 😊😊😊 I should've known it would be him being nice instead.
RODRIGUE, my beloved 😊😊😊 But we didn't get to see him
So it was Rufus. Not surprised. Declaring war on Rodrigue. Gross. Felix sounded pissed.
Wow, Rufus, trying to claim Rodrigue wants to make Dimitri his puppet king. That takes some imagination. Or is it just Cornelia using him?
Dimitri telling everyone to calm down and not rush to conclusions. Good for him.
Rhea sending help! Good. So who is in our unit. It's Catherine, right?
So no Sylvain or Felix in the camp? They're not here in the discussion. I'm proud of Ashe for making his own choice, but I can sympathize with Annette.
Arval told me to "run wild" lol. Yessss.
CAMP
Oh, Felix and Sylvain and Rodrige are here!!!! YESS, good, only Annette is missing. I love her and all, but it's the Faerghus 4 + Dedue that have me in a chokehold.
Waiiiiittt, are they suggesting Rufus was involved in Duscur? An NPC only said it so far, but that is an interesting idea.
WAIT, WHAT????? Rufus had Dimitri under basically house arrest, spied on, and went through all his letters??? WTF??? Was it really Rufus or Cornelia? Poor Dimitri. That explains why he's so distant from everyone.
I love this random NPC student woman ready to throw down for Dimitri. You and me both, girlll.
WAIT! Duh, it's not Catherine, it's Gilbert!! OMG, yes, and that's why they had Annette leave.
I love how the knights seem to actively want Dimitri to lead and want to work under him, not Rufus (or Cornelia).
I'm 100% doubting Felix's denial that he's not bothered by the false rumors about Rodrigue.
Yeesh, Rufus is a real shithole, hunh. If you piss Dedue off, you're probably a trash level human being. And he tried to harm Dimitri countless times? The writers just love beating up on Dimitri.
So that campaign Dimitri put down was an attempt to kill him? And Rufus send assassins after Dimitri??
I mean, I always kinda headcannoned that Dimitri's life after Duscur had to be a living hell because all of his father's closest allies (sans Rodrigue, Gautier, and Galatea) got killed, but it's kinda cool to see headcannon go cannon.
And no wonder he and Dedue are attached at the hip. They were probably both targeted for violence quite a bit.
I made Dimitri laugh 😭
Am I bias, or is Dimitri and Shez seem more natural/cuter than the other lords. I know, I'm just bias.
STORY
Ohh, a Rufus portrait! Yeah, Lambert won in the looks department, hunh.
Dimitri wants to resolve this without bloodshed.
Rufus just . . . ripped the letter up. And called Dimitri a "creature." And keeps trying to kill him.
And . . . calls him a rapid animal . . . uhhh, wonder where I've heard that before. Like, Rufus is talking about Dimitri, the same way he talks about himself. And Felix. I wonder how much he heard that shit from Rufus.
Like, I can't remember that last time I hated a character so much so fast.
This is going full Hamlet/Lion King, guys. He helped set up Duscur, the asshole.
Cornelia really is the only effective member of TWSITD.
Why does this game always have Dimitri have to kill his family.
Felix being helpful as always lol.
And Dimitri avoided this for so long to avoid civil war and avoid killing his uncle. But so happy Shez is supporting him.
BATTLE
Guys, I cannot wait to get to the mini-camp thing in this route. The other two routes had such cool lore bits and etc . . .
Feels good beating up Klineman.
Cornelia again lol. She's just deliciously awful. And OFC she just retreats lol. Back for another map later I'm assuming.
Rufus really just said he'll never get along with Dimitri because "man and monster" can't work together. Really not going to feel bad killing this guy.
So Dimitri finished Rufus with a knight killer move. Seems right.
Dimitri MVP again.
STORY
Cut scene time.
Fuck.
Dimitri's killing his family again. Shit. Why. He's way too young for this. And Rufus is spewing vile shit right until the end. This is hardcore for an FE game.
Geeze. Why. 😭 Look I don't care about Rufus, but Dimitri. Why.
Wait, is that Sylvain's dad??? HOW MANY DADS? WHY NO MOMS.
Yep! Guessed right.
That said, Rufus is a shit. He deserved that. Dimitri didn't.
Is this route going to be about finding TWSITD/Duscur? Just how many people played a role in Duscur?
Dimitri telling the truth to everyone. That's my boy. He's always the one that comes clean of the three lords. And we love him for it.
And clearing Duscur's name, no matter what the cost. We stan a legend. God, this is exactly what AM was missing. SOOOO glad AG is carrying it out.
Wait, Rodrigue retiring and handing it to Felix? Why? I like this change for Felix, but why?
FUCK YES!!! Dedue + Rodrigue team up to restore Duscur wasn't on my AG bingo card exactly, but it's hype as shit. And Rodrigue volunteering to take the blame for Duscur to keep Dimitri's name clear 😭😭😭
Rodrigue just telling it to Felix straight. But Dimitri saying he's going to talk to Felix anyways. Because Felix can't go back to school now either. I just love, Dimitri, ok? This is so the opposite of the other lords who just never talk to anyone and hide everything.
And Dimitri telling Gustav you're staying put. Not putting up with his shit. "I will make a place for you." 😭😭😭😭
Reorganizing the army?
Dimitri working too much and not sleeping. Name a more iconic duo.
Oh, great, he's promoting Shez too, lamo. But smart to make his own private army removed from Rufus, wanting people strictly loyal to him. But he's supposed to be the stupid one.
Wait, army of commoners?? What about the status quo? And doing it because he understands the commoners have much harder work?
Man, Dimitri over here making all the changes. I seriously love this so far. But unless Dimitri or the other Blue Lions got bad writing, I was always going too lol.
Ah, Shez accepted with no prodding from Arval? These two are kind of sweet.

@umbralstars replied:
I sometimes think of making a post to point this out but it's criminal that AG doesn't name or give non-generic portraits to the western lords. It makes them complete non-characters when they take up a significant portion of the plot. Like having the Begnion Senate be nothing but generic portraits and names. They seriously made One new villain for AG, kill him immediately, and then a good chunk of the game fighting is generics or rehashing AM but not as well (imo)
Tbh this is a problem with FE in general. They give either generic portraits or reuse portraits. I'd say in this case though it's more glaring because the western lords are meant to be actual villains in the story who not only work for TWS unwittingly, but genuinely have bad intentions while claiming they have good intentions.
Something I noticed when fighting them in the chapter you convince Baron Dominic to fight for your side is that... I never actually realized where the western lord enemies were on the battlefield. Like, when I'm fighting them, I'm just fighting the section of enemies in that area. They don't stand out enough for me to recognize them as the boss. While that's fine for generic war map battles and paralogues (I'm even iffy on Leif having a generic reused portrait though), for characters who have as much weight on the story as the western lords, it makes them feel less like a threat and less important to the story.
I think it's because they're effectively an extension of TWS as far as the plot goes, but it's still... not something I really like. Like you said, the Begnion Senate exists and we barely even see Hetzel in either game, but he still got a personalized portrait, name, and map sprite for battle.
I think AG did better with handling TWS then AM did as far as not leaving the Duscur plot hanging and allowing you to actually fight Thales as Thales (and all the people who suffered because of the Tragedy get a line about it, versus fighting not!Arundel in chapter 19 where only Dimitri gets a personalized dialogue with him).
Also though, I don't think it's quite rehashing because AM was much more focused on Edelgard and Dimitri's former bond with her, so TWS got waysided immensely. AG successfully stuck in Dimitri's relationship to Edelgard and handled TWS, and I can give them a pass for pushing Edelgard to the side more in this case because we've already seen that storyline in AM, so we don't need it again in AG (versus say, SB, where it's basically the same plot But Different. AG and GW get vastly different plots than Houses, even if worse in GW's case lol).
That said, yeah, the western lords were much more prominent in AG than in AM, and I wish they were made more actual characters. Baron Dominic is the closest we have and he'd make a solid character, but in both games he got a generic portrait (and it wasn't even the same one between games lmao). Hell, even Simon got a totally generic portrait. They're supposed to be related to Gustave and Annette, but we don't have any physical indication of that.
I wish I had it in me to write more fics about that stuff so I could make these characters more of characters, but alas, I don't have the energy to commit to that lmao. They'll just have to potentially be possible characters in some future dmcl fic since that's most of what I write.

How’s the game so far?? I’ve honestly never been happier… this is all I’ve ever wanted from azure gleam. Tecmo are finally doing things right by getting Dedue more involved in the story and genuinely seeing more of Duscur.
I'm actually enjoying it a lot! I wish Dedue had a bit more to say in some of the scenes but overall I'm very happy with the way they've been treating him.
I have a handful of complaints but they're really not that big a deal. Mainly stuff like overusing generic portraits instead of giving unique designs to a lot of characters (I know it would be a lot of effort, but a TON of FE games manage to give actual designs to one off bosses, and some of these generics are actually integrel to the plot), the camps looking exactly the same regardless of where you are on the map, and the ridiculous number of mechanics and tutorials, but that's all pretty minor stuff. I'm also not so sure about how I feel about the events of chapter 9 yet, but I'm only on chapter 10 so I'll wait to see how it plays out before complaining about it.
Anyway spoilers for stuff before chapter 10 below cut (includes story, support, and paralogue stuff so read at your own risk)
In chapter 7 I was genuinely so worried when only Shez and Felix showed up to that cutscene. I mean after years of Dedue constantly getting brushed aside in favor of spotlighting more popular characters my heart dropped AND THEN HE RUNS IN WITH THE LANCE AND THERE'S FREAKING DIMIDUE H*ND H*LDING
And I just love Dimitri basically saying "I'm not worthy" and Dedue coming in and demanding he recognize his own worth.
Their supports are pretty friggin gay too. I can't believe they a) confirm my headcanon that Dimidue used to sleep together whenever Dimitri would have nightmares and b) are that gay. They're so gay. The fact that Dimitri's first thought in "what if I had a different life" is "we would still be together somehow" is just. It's peak. I'm dead. I'm deceased
I think I'm gonna make a YouTube video cut of just my reactions during the supports (there will be a lot of screaming) when I have the time.

Asks for Three Hopes
For Claude blaming the church of everything in 3Hopes, do you know if these are conclusions he came to on his own or he heard Edelgard talk about it and was like “that makes sense”?
A little of column A, a little of column B. It SEEMS like mostly B, but I doubt it. There is a lot of text in this game and I haven’t learn all it’s secrets yet.
Can I just say that the devs apparently saying that this portrayal of the lords is what would happen with Byleth? COMPLETELY strips them of their characters, and makes it to where any of them are only halfway decent people because someone else made them that way. And by characters I of course mean specifically Claude.
Claude being willing to sacrifice his own people? Making Faerghus and Sreng fight each other? Killing Rhea and ignoring all of the mysteries he was always so curious about? Invading other nations? All of those things and more that fundamentally go against everything his 3H character stood for? Well, don't worry, he was actually ALWAYS like that and it's only because Byleth Stood There Once that he changes for the better! ZERO THINGS about his base character prevented him from committing these horrific, cruel actions, it was ONLY BYLETH that stopped him from dropping this low!
Like, honestly, how does that make ANY sense? Why is it that Edelgard and Dimitri are arguably BETTER without Byleth in Three Hopes and Claude is inarguably evil, when in 3H it's the OPPOSITE that's true? Where Edelgard and Dimitri can't succeed without Byleth while Claude is able to manage pretty decently without them? Why make his character SO dependent on whether Byleth is around when IN 3H he was one of the few characters that was mostly UNAFFECTED by Byleth's player pandering effect?
Sorry for ranting!! I just needed this off my chest 😭
No worries, rant away! Because it doesn’t make sense at all. It really doesn’t.
The only thing that makes sense is the original idea of Claude not trusting the Church and even wanting Rhea dead at some point. And that’s it. After that? No.
Edelgard is noticeably nicer. So what... did Byleth make her just worse? Dimitri is actually like... a really, really good king. Hell, he even has a great support system. Better than Byleth ever offered! Wtf?
I don’t think the devs thought it through. They are pretty fucking dumb.
I hear Agarthan Myson(who now has a unique portrait - generic warlock with stubble!) leads Flèche to kill Claude on Golden Wildfire to avenge her brother.
His model has stubble! Not sure about the portrait, I can’t remember at the moment.
But yeah, I think he does manipulate Fleche into trying to kill Claude. Poor Fleche. She’s a young fool.
wait is there actually lord supports with byleth in 3 hopes?
Yes-no. They all have a single support with each other. But you can only achieve them if you recruit Byleth and get banished to the “shadow realm”.
You know how it would have been a good way to make Claude not as moronic as he is in 3 Hopes and yet show how he'd do anything to stop the war? Keep it the same until last chapter, make a scene in which Edelgard is talking until she just... Drops dead. Claude then claims to the empire troops that the Alliance won't let them pass to Fhirdiad, and they have the option to either leave or fight. And the last chapter being a fight between the Alliance and the Empire (at which maybe the Kingdom joins?).
Idk I think it would have been interesting to see how much of the army would fight if Edelgard weren't there.
And if we need to keep the "All Lords need to be alive" for the secret ending, then the poison just renders her unconscious and Claude is going to basically abducts her so when she recovers her conscience she'll have to stop the war.
The thing is, I really like Claude being ruthless, but not to the point he's an idiot like in Three Hopes
@homeless-because-of-thanos
Nothing really to add. The writers didn’t need to make Claude drink the dumb dumb juice.
I really can’t tell if they purposely wrote him this way, knowing he’s wrong, or if they really wanted us to believe the Church is some evil and cruel force....

@seanorib this is honestly all the motivation I need to make a very long post about character designs, I'm including dads who got designs from Houses as well bc damn if I don't have opinions on those too (cut for length):
Fathers of the Black Eagles:
Tumblr media
Ionius IX: This is what I picture when I hear "revenant" pronounced in its native French, this guy looks like a zombie but like, a fancy zombie, a revenant. His design sparked an entire theory post about the Agarthans and their blood experiments on Lysithea and Edelgard and it was fantastic, if I ever unearth it from the hell of my drafts I will reblog it bc it was a great theory post, and made me appreciate this fucker's design while giving me a reason to want to set him on fire aside from "I don't like his vibes". Looks like he could be related to Edelgard, so props there.
A+ design, but potentially an F in being a dad.
Tumblr media
Ludwig: Looks more like a greedy rich merchant than a corrupt duke, full outfit wasn't included here but it should be way more opulent and decadent than it is. I hate that pathetic excuse of a mustache and will set it aflame myself if someone else doesn't beat me to it. Design loses points bc his outfit is red and he's a redhead, I cannot stress enough how much better blue or green or even purple would have worked with his hair. Does NOT look like he's related to Ferdinand in the slightest, outside of hair and eye color.
C- design, F in being a dad.
Tumblr media
Leopold: Looks like a Tekken character, he has the Mishima eyebrows, even that goofy armor wouldn't be out of place in Tekken, I am not convinced he didn't get lost on his way to Tekken. Also he's short, I cannot stress how short this guy looks in cutscenes. Armor's a bit goofy, but he looks like a wise warrior who has seen many, many battles, and somehow despite not looking too much like Caspar, I can buy him being Caspar's dad bc he's so fucking short.
A+ design but only bc I like Tekken, A in being a dad so far as I can tell but I'm not to the end of Scarlet Blaze yet.
Tumblr media
Waldemar: As covered in my previous post, this guy looks like an undead toad, or undead Muppet, whichever. I haven't even been able to pay attention to his characterization or the rest of his design bc his face is so weird looking that I get stuck on that. Props for not having round glasses I guess. Doesn't look related to Linhardt outside of the hair color, I think Fodlan's genetics run on the same logic as Awakening and Fates genetics.
?? design bc it's horrid but also hilarious, ?? in being a dad bc again, I just haven't seen enough of him to know.
Tumblr media
Gregoire: Looks like a dad (derogatory). One of the most dad-looking dads in this game, but his portrait here has the sinister undertones that I can only describe as dad (derogatory). He's a coward in-game though, I have no idea how this spineless wet rag managed to traumatize Bernadetta so badly. His mustache somehow works despite being the exact same as Ludwig's, but the Elvis hairdo is unnerving. Does kinda look related to Bernadetta though.
B design, F- in being a dad and also a person.
Tumblr media
Volkhard: Not a dad, but an uncle, so close enough. Looks like a vampire. Major vampire energy. I know he's dead and it's someone else wearing his skin in both games, but this dude has so much vampire going on that he might as well have lost on his way to a Castlevania ripoff (does not have quite the same vampire energy as an Ayame Kojima vampire).
A+ design, ?? in being a person bc again, this guy is actually basically undead.
Fathers of the Blue Lions:
Tumblr media
Lambert: I hate this man's excuse of a beard so much. The rest of his design is Fine, he's got a generic blond fantasy king look but it's not a bad generic look, but that beard has to go. He looks related to Dimitri so, props again.
A- design, ?? in being a dad bc being dead makes parenting very hard.
Tumblr media
Rufus: Not a dad, uncle again, but can you believe this fucker is related to Lambert? He looks like if you mixed the words "revenant" and a "draugr", and he looks even more undead as a fully animated 3D model. Are his bangs gelled back or is that supposed to be stylized long hair swept back? Who allowed him to choose that beard shape? Why is his armor so boring if he's trying to wrest the throne from Dimitri by force, you're royalty get some fancy fucking armor.
C design, F in being a person.
Tumblr media
Rodrigue: I surprisingly don't have complaints about his design. The facial hair's a bit weird, but considering some of the other offenders, I'm letting it slide. Surprisingly looks related to Felix.
A+ design, B+ in being a dad.
Tumblr media
Lonato: Dad by proxy. This is one of the most "is a knight" looking knight characters in either game. Fantastic mustache, the rest of the design is fine, a bit generic for the armor, but fine otherwise.
A design, D+ in being a dad (SB might, weirdly enough, raise that score).
Tumblr media
Mattias: That's just some guy. That is literally the most "just some guy"-looking design I have ever seen in my life. He's just...a generic guy, he doesn't even have dad-energy, he doesn't even have dude-energy, what am I supposed to do with someone this generic? I guess props for having an interesting nose shape, but considering how many characters suffer same-nose syndrome in this game the bar for that isn't hard to pass. Does look related to Miklan, does not look related to Sylvain which makes me wonder what each of their mothers looked like.
C design, C- in being a dad but only barely above a D+.
Tumblr media
Gustave/Gilbert: If you took a "is a knight, looks like a generic knight" approach and crossed it with a "looks like a wet mop" approach to a character design, I think this would be it. The orange accents are a weird choice, re: my rant on Ludwig. Does kinda look related to Annette, but I'm assuming she took after her mom.
B+ design, C in being a dad.
Father...of the Golden Deer:
Tumblr media
Erwin: Somehow--SOMEHOW--fits all my mental assumptions and biases for "crafty duke who takes being a noble too seriously and imparted that anxiety onto his son and heir". Looks like a duke, looks like he's related to Lorenz, even his armor which is kinda generic is so purple that I can't assume it belongs to anyone but a noble. I hate the purple-on-purple look the armor and his hair have going on, but the excessive purple does evoke a sense of regality even if it's too much purple (I'll save my rant for purple-hair characters and their disaster outfit's for another post, bc there isn't a single purple-haired character in all of Fodlan who gets a good outfit color palette). The weird little diadem thing is an odd addition, but this is the most "dad who looks both related to his child(ren) and looks to fit the role he is assigned on the game" design of any of the dads.
A+ design, uh...B+ in being a dad bc he wasn't actually as bad as I was expecting him to be.
Bonus Round:
Tumblr media
Jeralt: I haven't forgiven his design ever since I first drew his hair. It's fine actually, even the color palette isn't technically bad, but I hate everything about his hair and his beard, they're so fucking hard to draw . Looks like a mercenary though, so props, does not look related to Byleth but we actually do get a design for their mom and Byleth does take after the mom, which leads me to believe that all the moms are gorgeous and that's why IntSys decided we couldn't have them.
A- design bc it's fine technically, B in being a dad.
Tumblr media
Alois: Technically a dad even if we never get to see his family and the Hopes writers entirely forgot about his family. I have no complaints about his design, not even his mustache, this is a decent design. This is also the best armor design on this entire post, in fact this is the ONLY good armor design on this post.
A+ design, ?? in being a dad bc the writers love to not tell us anything.
Tumblr media
Seteth: Dad who's status as a dad is the worst-kept secret in Fodlan. The only design with an unnatural hair color that has an outfit that doesn't completely clash with said unnatural hair color. His hair looks better on the model than in the portrait image. I still hate whatever is going on with those sleeves. Can you imagine going into battle wearing that? All the sweat is gonna show through that white. Mixed feelings about the beard. Looks like he could be related to Flayn but mostly bc of the green hair.
A design, A- being a dad.

For a change of pace I’m going to actually say something nice about a character, and that’s Claude (under the cut cuz it got a bit long and I remember!! that’s a fucking thing you can do lmaooo).
Like, there’s honestly a lot to this character that I find very striking and sadly gets overlooked in favor of either making him a complete joke or a complete/near complete sociopath. I like that Claude initially believes himself to be this beacon of hope to this silly land of Fodlan because of his view as an outsider... and then realizing and acknowledging he’s not, that while an outsider’s perspective takes away the bias of growing up steeped in certain ways it also leaves holes that he just can’t catch without someone showing him due to his ignorance of said culture. He thinks he has Cyril and Rhea pinned down to rights because of course he would, why wouldn’t he... and then he actually talks to them and is shown wrong, and he listens! With Cyril he likes being shown the truth even if it means it puts him and his previous beliefs in a nonperfect light! With Rhea he doesn’t just reject her words even though they blow a giant hole in what he thought of her for the vast majority of the game!
And the way his trust issues are handled, while I do think could have been dealt with better had the route focused on his character more, I still absolutely love it. It’s so subtle but consistent throughout pre ts/post ts VW, how often he “makes sure” the Golden Deer are by his side, how he always has to find the “right time” to reveal his plans to them because he genuinely thinks they won’t trust or believe in him, how he genuinely thought that Hilda and Judith would abandon him if things got too dangerous for them personally (in AM for Judith, Hilda for both CF and AM), how you never really get Claude’s full story anywhere even in the end or the S support (almost like that’s a big source of trauma for him and he’s a secretive guy because of that trauma that doesn’t magically stop being a thing because you wanna kiss him! Congrats IntSys for once you managed to get something kinda right!), how even something like you calling him a stalwart ally is responded with a wink and a deflection saying that you’re just flattering him (because you can’t actually believe he’s a good ally too, right?), but then you see him actually trust someone and oh. Oh man. The difference is night and day. How he pleads with Dimitri to stop fighting and join forces in both AM and VW despite Dimitri being off the fucking walls at the time, how he honestly believed that Dimitri would not only recover from his madness but still come to his aid in AM, hell even in CF he honestly believes that there’s no way Byleth would kill him despite them deliberately forcing the Alliance into the war by invading them, shown by his shock and hurt if you actually do - Claude puts his trust in few people but when he does he does and that’s honestly so indicative of how drastic his trust issues affect him.
You see that growth more blatantly in his supports as well - compare how worriedly Claude deflects Hilda’s observation about his knowledge of how Almyrans see the Gonerils pre ts to him inviting her to meet his parents post ts. Similar with Leonie, how he offers to take her to his homeland, something pre ts Claude would never dream of.
And then there’s his empathy and compassion! Like often he’s very careless when it comes to trying to discover the truth yes, but when he sees there’s a line he’s going to cross if he does? He steps back, always. His supports with Marianne show this amazingly, with him thoughtlessly stepping on her insecurities, trying to apologize and make her feel better but failing, and then ending with him opening up to her about his own life - something he very, very rarely does - to make her feel less alone with her struggles. His ones with Flayn even say straight up that he dislike forcing secrets out of people, and when he says he’ll give up trying to get Flayn to talk herself... he does. Legitimately. Afterwards he just spitballs theories to her. Even when he sees he’s hitting close to home when he correctly guesses Flayn and Seteth’s relationship he doesn’t push farther than that despite the huge implications of what that means. And this “I don’t like to force secrets out of people” line is backed up by you losing support points with him if you try to dig at Flayn after Remire.
And we know that Claude doesn’t immediately think of the commonfolk in his dream via his supports with Cyril, but damn, when they’re in front of him, when they’re directly in his care? Claude arguably goes the farthest of the three lords to portect them. Mr. “Tactical Retreat” suddenly puts himself in direct danger by painting himself as a prime target for the Empire to attack in AM and CF. He involves none of the other houses and tell his men to retreat should things get dangerous for them (as shown in explore dialogue with CF!Lysithea and what he says if Judith and Hilda die in AM/CF in their respective maps). He calls in the Almyran army in CF and on the Kingdom army in AM - forces with trained soldiers ready to fight, not civilians desperate to live. And speaking of civilians, he evacuates all of Derdriu’s civilians and closes down entry into Derdriu. Even with him planning on retreating himself should things go badly that takes some nards to go through with given how easily things can go badly for him should just about anything go awry; he goes the distance for those under his care.
And also how readily he offers his support and understanding to the more emotionally abused characters. Look at his talk with Dimitri during Golden Deer’s Plea, back at his supports with Marianne, how he sympathizes with Rhea - someone he actively disliked/distrusted for most of the game - once he hears her story.
And yo, man, his backstory? Imma be real, very rarely do I get invested in “racism bad” storylines because so often they fall into “white man bad POC good” black-and-white (lol) mentality, but this? I actually felt this. So rarely is a mixed race person’s perspective shown in regards to racism since it’s more complicated than “whitey bad POC good”. No, both have people in them that are raised with beliefs that breed racism. They’re not evil people, they’re a result of the culture that raised them, and that raised those that raised them, and so on and so forth. He gets that his dream is unrealistic and that it’d take a very, very long time to implement even if it did happen and even then would face extreme backlash from people from both sides, but he believes in this dream. It’s what lets him face on Edelgard in CF despite the insignificant chance he has of winning if he does so, what pushed him to go beyond his familiar home of Almyra into the completely unknown Fodlan, what drives him to aim for Almyra’s throne despite his position as the youngest prince (aka his weak connection compared to his half-brothers).
And like, Claude shares with Rhea in that IntSys dropped the ball on their characters anyway, despite how much thought was put into them. Rhea is stripped of damn near any agency in post ts, non-CF routes and Claude has noticeably less direct attention given to his upbringing compared to Edelgard and Dimitri (and small things like no appearance from either of his parents’, no child portrait, stuff like that). This is most likely due to their routes basically being copy-pastes of each other so it had to be compatible with both characters so both characters had to suffer for it. But like, for what we got? I still love it.
#Claude#claude von reigen#Claude (fire emblem)#gonna actually tag him since it's positive#more stuff I couldn't fit in the post itself:#i personally acknowledge Dimitri and Rhea to be better written characters than Claude but just something about him had me connect to him mor#though I still do love Dimitri and Rhea don't get me wrong lol#And furthermore on the point with Claude and Rhea#he almost sounds like he doesn't want to get to truth from Rhea when she's at her deathbed#and only does so because the truth NEEDS to be known by someone and only Rhea has that truth#shown by how his first words to her when they meet for the last time is him apologizing#and interestingly Rhea says that she's happy to see the ''two'' of them#them being Claude and Byleth#just find it interesting how she says that specifically#like you'd think she'd be wary if anything towards Claude given his outburst the last time they talked privately#but by the last talk it looks like things like... actually improved between the two of them?#like not sure if ''respect'' is the right word but there's noticeably less tension in the air#and in fact there's that lessened tension in all the moments after Claude initially yells at her and she reveals some of the truth#and also you gain support points with Claude if you say you should let Rhea rest after rescuing her#which despite him saying ''Sadly I agree'' tells a lot about him cuz IntSys could have just made THAT the option you gain nothing with#or just have it join the endless dialogue branches that have both/all options do nothing to support points#if it really meant nothing kwim#loooon ass tag list but had a bit to say that I couldn't fit lmaooo

Anon from before here. The one who thinks the whole "Edelgard is bad because she wants to relax and eat after the wars over' is a leap or whatever. Isn't it *optional* to do that support anyway? And I think its implied that theres food shortages on the other routes as well. At least I vaguely recall there being talks about that kind of thing on other routes. Might just be something different though, Ain't like I've been playing the game nonstop since it came out.
Anon from before here. The one who thinks the whole "Edelgard is bad because she wants to relax and eat after the wars over' is a leap or whatever.
oh joy… i missed u so much…
Isn't it *optional* to do that support anyway?
you think you’re smart but you still can’t read. optional or not, it’s still important. even if supports were completely non canon we still have her stupid portrait scene which conveys the same message. her b support shows the same nonchalant and childish mindset. my point still stands.
are you ever going to address the points i made? or is that too hard? are you just going to keep coming back again and again to make strawman arguments?
And I think its implied that theres food shortages on the other routes as well.
yes, people are going to be hungry on all routes because edelgard started a war and that is never a good thing for produce production.
i literally said this: “in azure moon dimitri isn’t starving his people. hell, in his mural he’s giving food out. same with ss/vw. this shit is only in adrestia and the faerghus dukedom” “this shit” is the deliberate staving of citizens, you know, the thing that only happens under edelgard’s rule?
the golden deer and blue lions are not the ones whining about wanting to eat cake/relax while the world that they set on fire burns.
At least I vaguely recall there being talks about that kind of thing on other routes. Might just be something different though, Ain't like I've been playing the game nonstop since it came out.
you think? are you going to bring any quotes to me? or do i have to do everything myself even when i’m not the one making the argument?
if you don't even have a basic understanding of the point that you are trying to make i honestly don't know why you wouldn’t think it would be a smart idea to bring evidence with you or at least do some searching on your own. that’s why we have the datamine. i’m just genuinely baffled.

A whole list of things I wish the game actually explored (under a cut because there’s a batshit lotta text and tbh I’m probably missing some if not a lot of things I would’ve liked to see at all/more of):
Annette and Felix having a post timeskip support that focused on the fact that their parents lived together after the coup. For that matter, I would’ve liked conversations between Felix and Gilbert because of that, because I imagine it means Felix has lived with Gilbert, while Annette was living with her uncle.
On that note, we know next to nothing about Felix’s uncle. It’s a problem in this game in general that we know basically nothing at all about characters’ families, some of them not even getting a portrait (like Glenn, which is insane to me because of his importance as a character he is in Blue Lions, and Holst doesn’t have a portrait either which is also lol wut). I understand some of them not having portraits like say, Caspar and Ignatz’s brothers because they’re not important to the plot of any route or to any character’s development, but they should all still have names and a little known about them.
My main issue with this is less the fact that we know nothing about so many side characters that get mentioned and more that a lot of supports feel like useless filler (as mentioned below, Raphael and Dimitri’s supports. They could’ve had a lot of meaning if they’d gotten another support or two, also detailed below, but both their supports are humor related filler and do nothing for either character whatsoever when we have so much information those could’ve been used for. A lot of supports could’ve been more like Petra and Caspar’s supports where we learn a lot of important information about their backgrounds and their relationship).
There was a rebellion in Western Faerghus, but Yuri never talks about that or if it affected him and/or his mother at all. Sadge.
There is so little information about Almyra that’s it literally stupid lol. You’re gonna make a main character with his route half Almyran and not even make his route have anything to do with Almyra. Real smooth, IntSys. We only get bits of information in supports and we get Nader coming to help Claude briefly in the main story and he’s an enemy in CF, but since they made Silver Snow first you’d think they’d actually make VW signicantly different from an already made/planned route and center the story more on the actual lead character. Even in SS, Seteth is basically your main character while Rhea isn’t there and it’s handled very much as a Church based route. VW is handled as Church Route 2.0 with some relation to the actual main character of that route. It would’ve been really cool if we got to meet some of Claude’s brothers or hell, even just one would’ve been better than what we got. If we were really lucky we could’ve met one of his brothers who hated him, maybe as an enemy not affiliated with the Empire who spills it that they’re siblings and has people questioning that because if people knew his brother was Almyran, it would create a whole plotline in VW relating to people actually finding out about Claude. Ultimately the point is, VW was a waste almost entirely because it has almost nothing to do with Claude, and the Fodlan worldbuilding should’ve been kept to SS and not split between two routes when one of them deserved to focus on Claude instead. All the routes focus on their lead character except VW, which only focuses on Claude a little bit instead of how much it should have.
Constance actually talking about her time in Fhirdiad/enrolling in the School of Sorcery there. Similarly, Lorenz having more to say about his time at the School of Sorcery and about his time in Faerghus in general.
Dimitri is literally called a vagrant in his bio pts. That’s a really weird term to use considering we have really little to go on that explains why his bio defines him with that very specific term. The main thing we’re constantly reminded of is that he was slaughtering Imperial troops, but that doesn’t really put the vagrant adjective into perspective. That sounds more like something someone living in Abyss would be.
Petra’s relationship to Duke Gerth. We get to see him and his relationship with Constance, but nothing about Petra.
Ferdinand apparently took people with him and was traveling before returning to the monastery in non-CF routes. It sounds like he was more of a mercenary or something? We never find out anything about who he traveled with though and what exactly he was doing.
More about Thales and Arundel, specifically when the death took place and how Thales successfully posed as him for so long. Thales had to have known enough about Arundel to be able to do that so convincingly, but there’s so little information about what actually happened.
Raphael having a support with Dedue about cooking because why the actual mcfuckity fuckers does that not exist??? Raphael literally helped at a restaurant during the timeskip and Dedue is like Pro Chef ™. Also in that regard, same with Ashe, because Ashe was born to restaurant owners and surprise kids! also lost his parents.
Raphael having an A+ support with Dimitri. They have so much in common and I’m really, REALLY sad their supports got diluted to nothing but comedy. It’s a huge problem Raphael’s entire character suffers and Dimitri’s supports with the Golden Deer got done so dirty.
On that note, Dimitri really could have had great supports with ALL of the Golden Deer.
Hilda is recruitable in the Blue Lions route and easy to miss in Silver Snow since you only have two weeks to recruit her. Where are my supports about their level of strength because of their Crests and how it dictates so much of how they’re perceived? Hilda wants to be lazy because she’s terrified of disappointing people, while Dimitri is always trying extra hard with everything he does. They’re complete opposites with a central point connecting how they do things.
Leonie wants to become a mercenary and follow in Jeralt’s footsteps (who was from the Kingdom iirc) and I think Dimitri would more than gladly hire her as a mercenary in training in post timeskip. Also, I imagine Leonie would really respect his strength.
Lysithea hates being seen as a child but Dimitri respects people for who they are and wouldn’t judge her for her age and I think she’d really respect him for that; plus they both have ties to TWS and I think Lysithea telling him about them in their post timeskip supports could have given closure to the plot holes regarding TWS’ relationship to Dimitri. Considering in the DLC Dimitri outright asks Edelgard about her hair color, they could have even discussed that in a support and Lysithea could explain what happened to her and that it likely happened to Edelgard as well.
Lorenz literally declares “glory to Faerghus, ruin to the Empire” and willingly fights for Dimitri/Faerghus after the Alliance is dissolved; plus Lorenz’s concepts as a member of the nobility heavily fall in line with how Dimitri treats his people. When it comes to how they feel people should treated, they have so much in common and could also teach each other so much. Both of them have a habit of meaning well and coming across with it poorly, and I think it’d be really nice to see them talk about that and try to come up with ways together on how to fix that. ALSO he left the School of Sorcery early because of political changes in the Kingdom, so they could 110 percent talk about that too.
Ignatz wants to be a painter but is in the Academy training to become a knight. Firstly, Faerghus is like, the Go To Place if you’re training to be a knight, and Ignatz definitely has a lot of chivalry to spare. Secondly, he could become a knight for his family whilst being a painter because as soon as Dimitri found out what Ignatz wanted, he would help him reach that dream. Dimitri wants people to be happy but he also understands the conflict of wanting to make family proud (including Rodrigue, as Dimitri literally states Rodrigue is like a second father to him).
Again with Raphael, they could’ve talked about their parents and how it’s affected them since. Dimitri has gotten violent and aggressive because of it even if he tries to avoids being like that, and I think Raphael could try to teach him how to manage his hatred. More than anyone Raphael has a really good handling of his feelings and staying positive and I think he could’ve really helped Dimitri in trying to stay positive for the people who are still alive. Since Dimitri can only get supports PTS after Rodrigue dies, he could even bring up how people want him to live for himself and how he wants to do right by the living and not just the dead. They could have had an A support that went into why Raphael and Dimitri both want to be so strong, and even an A+ support to balance the humorous supports with actual character development supports on these topics.
where’s my fucking dlc where claude can join you in azure moon and get supports with dimitri y’all know i’d actually pay for just that alone and on that note they should really have supports even pre-ts specifically if they could have supports post-ts and it’s the only route they can both survive in so YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE INTSYS STOP COCKBLOCKING MY SHIPS
Ashe should have had things to say about his relationship with Christophe and it bothers me how we only know about him and Lonato. Also, Lonato attacks in his chapter and mentions “his son” which I feel like was a HUGE low blow to Ashe and really should have been a conversation during the chapter if Ashe is present in the battle (regardless of route). He’s literally fighting the side Ashe is on, he KNOWS Ashe is at the Academy and he could be fighting him but still has the nerve to say he does what he does for “his son”. So like uhhh, hey sir, what about your other son???
You all knew this was coming: where are Ashe’s supports with Yuri??? Also, he was in service of House Rowe during the timeskip (and remains that way until recruited non-AM) so uhhh, no mention of that anywhere with Yuri? Okay. Okay. Cool. Got it. Gotcha. That’s fine I guess. I’ll just be a lil bitter ‘bout that.
The fact that Ingrid and Rodrigue don’t even get to have a conversation anywhere bothers me so much, my dudes. We know all about her love and respect for Glenn and not enough about her and Rodrigue’s relationship. She was literally planned to be his daughter in law at birth and we get nothing about them.
0/10 no information on glenn and miklan having a relationship im not saying romantically, but i’d take that too  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Dimitri should have supports with Yuri and it’s 2021 and people are allowed to be offended by anything these days, so I’m offended that they don’t have supports!!!
why no joke about claude proposing to dimitri with failnaught doh oh right bc the proposal wasn’t a joke!!! :D

fe3h characters ranked by how much i like their eyebrows
(yes this is only the students, no you dont get pictures with it i’m too lazy, yes i’m right about everything <3)
Hubert: can’t have an opinion on something that doesn’t exist 0/10
Lorenz: they’re too thin and the way they blend into his nose makes him look like like the anime boy equivalent of squidward’s house, i think maybe they’re just too low on his forehead?? idk but it’s 2/10
Raphael: WAY too small for his hair texture and face, if he had fluffier brows he would be so much more approachable 2/10
Constance: you could draw a single line on your browbone with a mechanical pencil and it would be thicker than poor ms von Nuvelle’s eyebrows 2/10
Hilda: basic thin anime brows, not too much interest especially considering how good the rest of her design is 3/10
Balthus: he and dedue literally have the exact same eyebrows, balthus’s just extend out further and have a sharper point, but those differences do not stop these brows from being ugly 3/10
Dedue: i love a thick eyebrow, but these are so low-set and the weird spike/hook things on the ends are not flattering, i can understand stern but there’s no reason for his brows to look evil, it’s a 4/10 for me
Ingrid: the shape is strong and determined, and the placement on the face is good, but why the fuck does this bright yellow blonde have black eyebrows i’m so tired of this bullshit 4/10
Leonie: Pretty good shape, but the color is sooooo different from her hair that it makes everything off. the sharpness of the arch is nice though 4/10
Felix: great color match considering their thinness, but the way they blend into the top of his nose on one side depending on which direction he’s facing is a little strange and really off-putting for me, i think his eyebrows look fine thin considering his hair texture but i would like more definition, 4/10 (although his eyebrows look GREAT on his in-game model, i dont know why they’re so different)
Caspar: i’m not a fan of the feathery/spiky tipped eyebrows in general, but i do like that caspar has something unique. if only they weren’t literally straight lines with a color about 10 shades away from his hair 4/10
Marianne: pretty good! the shape is pretty basic and you can’t even see them pre-ts, but they are very kindly shaped 5/10
Yuri: blends too much into the nose and has very little definition, but gets extra points because they’re so expressive 5/10
Dorothea: not a great color match but not terrible, the shape really compliments her eye shape though, 5/10
Linhardt: these are decent, good unique shape and decent color match, i think they should be a little bigger or more defined because both his haircuts leave a lot of empty forehead space, but they’re not terrible 5/10
Annette: again, pretty standard thin anime girl brows, but these are a little thicker and have a soft, gentle slope 5/10
Bernadetta: hers are hard to judge because her default talking portrait doesn’t have a neutral expression (poor bernie), but i think these are pretty good, they’re kind of short which is cute and unique among the cast, but i think the taper is a little too intense for how short they are, 5/10
Hapi: the shape is uniquely expressive and the color match is actually decent despite how thin they are, 5/10
Ashe: for once the super-anime-style thinness works a little better for his face, since he already has small, delicate features, the shape is a little boring though, 5/10
Ferdinand: a slightly softer version of the angry arch with good color matching and a lot of expressiveness, i think my king deserves big ol caterpillars but these are pretty good 5/10
Sylvain: LOVE the way the shape matches his hair texture, that’s impeccable, plus the shape is well defined and has lots of personality, if only the color had literally any similarity to his hair color, 6/10
Ignatz: friendly, matches the rest of his foundness, a little too dark though 6/10
Dimitri: good definition and color matching, although the shape is very flat and makes him look grumpy, but overall a strong set of brows 7/10
Edelgard: strong, determined shape with just enough thickness to have a defined arch and some interesting tapering, pretty good brows! 7/10
Petra: her eyebrows are totally different shapes pre and post timeskip, which is weird, but i like both of them, they both are a really flattering shape with a definable arch (the arch is further back post ts, which i think looks better) and a well executed taper, pretty good color, all around a win 8/10
Claude: SUPERB eyebrows wow, the thickness is absolutely perfect, the sharp inner end proceeding into a rounded outer end with both an elegant smoothness and a pronounced arch to the shape, the feathering on the ends for texture, these are all around stellar brows, 9/10
Mercedes: LITERALLY PERFECT, the color is exact, the shape is gently rounded and has personality, they’re thick and positioned perfectly on her forehead, absolutely incredible 10/10

✨ FE3H Students + Fair Hcs ✨
Bc my babies deserve to go to the fair toooo
🦅 Black Eagles 🦅
They’re all pretty confused at the fair tbh
For most of them it’s their first time there
There’s so much to do, so many people that they can’t focus on one thing
When they eventually gather their bearings, they’re really intrigued
Edelgard loves the games, but Ferdinand keeps trying to beat her at them
Ferdie doesn’t actually like the games,,, his comptetitive side just gets the better of him
He actually really likes the spinning rides. The ones that do drops make him sick and the swinging ones terrify him
Hubert is absolutely terrified by the rides bc,,, heights,,,,
But he goes on them anyways bc he has to accompany Edelgard
Petra and Dorothea walk around together and visit all the pop up booths to see what they’re selling
Bernie goes with them bc she doesn’t want to go on the rides and it’s generally less crowded by the shops
She ends up buying a few cute pins and Dorothea and Petra get matching sunglasses
Petra manages to win Bernie a large stuffed bear and Bernie almost cries bc of how much she loves it.
Caspar wants to do anything and everything and eat everything so Linhardt just walks around with him to try to keep him out of trouble
Caspar ABSOLUTELY tries to fight a carnie when he can’t win any of the games. The BE have to hold him back lol.
“BET I WONT CLIMB OVER THIS BARRIER AND TAKE THAT GIANT PIKACHU FOR MYSELF!!! BET!!!”
Caspar ends up eating too many fried desserts and throws up after a ride so for the rest of the day they just walk around and look at the animals
🦁 Blue Lions 🦁
They’re extremely excited to be at the fair
Most of them have been to festivals, but never one with all these rides and games
It’s canon that food from Faerghus is,,, bland,,, so all of them are really blown away by the food
Annette, Mercedes, and Dimitri are especially excited over the fried desserts like fried Oreos, cookie dough, cheesecake, etc.
Ingrid, Dedue, and Ashe are all really drawn towards stuff like potato spirals, 10 pound buns, and those giant turkey legs.
When they pass by the 10 pound buns stall, sylvain makes a horrible joke (based off a joke I made aha ha)
“Why but those when I got a pair of ten pound buns for you right here ayyyy”
“I can’t fucking,,, stand you,,,,”
Annette and Mercedes take HELLA pictures of everyone. Almost all of them are candids.
Sylvain and Felix play the games the most. Felix bc he likes the challenge and Sylvain just wants to win prizes for girls
Felix is that one dude who manages to win hella prizes, so he’s got a bag full of stuffed animals. He also ends up towing around a new bike for the rest of the day
Sylvain,,, isn’t very good at the games,,, but he laughs it off and pretends he doesn’t care. But he does. And he’s low key mad.
Dimitri and Dedue try all of the rides, ESPECIALLY the big thriller ones. But at one point Dimitri accidentally grips the safety bars too hard and crushes them. They have to shut down the ride for the rest of the day
Ashe and Annette get stuck in the house of mirrors for a bit. It’s funny bc you can see into them and all you see is them frantically trying to get out.
🦌 Golden Deer 🦌
Chaos Group™
They’re so excited but some of them go a little crazy
Claude figures out how the carnies rigged their games and finds out how to beat AL of the games. He ends up winning hella prizes on top of making a lot of the carnies mad
Hilda gets prizes too, just not how Claude gets them. She ends up somehow convincing the Carnies to let her win and they give her HELLA prizes
Basically the two of them end up walking around eating fun foods while they drag around their huge bag of prizes. They get a lot of stares from small children lol
Lorenz is a Fool and tries to get prizes as well. He ends up spending WAY too much money but only ends up with 2 stuffed animals
However he is pretty intrigued by the exhibition hall attractions, and he ends up checking them all out and hanging out there
Marianne and Hilda walk around the petting zoo together. The animals love Marianne and seem to crowd around her. Hilda takes a bunch of cute pictures of Marianne with the animals.
Lysithea goes crazy over the sweets and she ends up getting a stomachache so she stops going on rides and just walks around the fair with the others
Afterwards Marianne and Hilda get matching hennas together and take cute photo booth pictures.
Raphael tries all of the food and somehow doesn’t end up dead from a sick stomach. He absolutely adores the deep fried Oreos and ends up buying a shit ton of them. His one complaint is that it’s too expensive
Ignatz and Raphael definitely get caricature portraits done. Ignatz is pretty intrigued by the art style and tries to replicate it for fun. Raphael shows his portrait to his sister and it cracks her up
Leonie goes on hella rides, she’s truly an adrenaline junkie. However, she doesn’t want to go alone so she always makes at least one of the GD go with her.

Honestly, I wonder if IS hired new ppl into the company, and instead of testing their abilities by putting them to work on a small project (like gamefreak does), they put them to work on 3h. That would explain all the "incompetent" answers in the Nindori interview, how they forgot to put actuall important lore into the game (The Claude true name thing), the low quality-pixelated textures, 3d models and animations... It isn't going to help future entries if they keep doing this, seein 3h sales.
Honestly I wouldn’t say that any of those things you mentioned are really what’s worth criticizing here. I haven’t read the full transcript of any of the interviews and my memory of them isn’t the best, but I tend to think of those kinds of things as more expressions of content creators’ visions than of the quality of the actual products. And FE16 is indeed a very arthouse-y, take-what-you-will out of it kind of game, with a heavy foundation in Jugdral so that part at least flies with me. As for the rest:
Claude’s real name is irrelevant to the plot(s) and tells us nothing about his character that we didn’t already know. At best it’s trivia. For comparison, it’s stated explicitly in in-game text that Yuri isn’t going by his real name either, and in his S support he shares that name with Byleth although the player doesn’t hear it. I cannot imagine a scenario in which it would add anything of substance if we were told at some point what that real name was, except again as a point of trivia. There are major issues with the lore and lore presentation of this game though, notably in the over-reliance on lategame exposition dumps and all the vague and sometimes contradictory backstories. Rhea, Edelgard, and Dimitri all get hit with that last one to varying degrees, and with Edelgard especially the dodgy writing has required people to reinterpret her as an emotionally manipulative liar in order to make sense of everything.
I said this before the game came out, but realistic graphical quality has never been a selling point of console FEs and - looking more broadly - of Nintendo’s library in general. You can’t look at Path of Radiance and say that its 3D elements don’t look awful for a non-launch Gamecube title, and it will never cease to surprise me that Genealogy came out the same year on the same hardware as Super Mario RPG or the third Donkey Kong Country game. Personally I was going to be satisfied with Three Houses’s graphics provided they were better than those of the last console release, and this game does in fact look better than Radiant Dawn (in terms of assets used, at least; it’s more a matter of opinion whether the switch from static portraits to models for cutscenes and supports is more dynamic or just clunky and awkward). If anything bugs me about the visuals here it’s the various uncanny valley CG art, not anything as technologically-involved as the models or textures.
I’m not one to ask about development cycles, or who was working on what projects, but I’m not overly concerned about FE16′s financial performance especially relative to the 3DS titles. It seems to be a general rule that console games don’t sell as well as handheld ones, a point that often gets brought up when addressing the terrible sales of the Tellius games compared to their GBA predecessors, and in any case I doubt IS cares very much when Heroes is their big money-maker for FE now and will probably continue to be for the foreseeable future. Mobile gachas are just more profitable for a much smaller investment of money and effort, and while I don’t play Heroes myself I don’t see anything wrong with the company leaning on the proceeds while they stick members of their team on “artsy” original pieces like Three Houses or remakes of older games. Remakes don’t seem to sell very well either, but they’re effective for feeding the nostalgia loop of Heroes.
Basically, Three Houses has its fair share of problems, but I don’t think you can attribute them to developer inexperience or incompetence. Well...most of the time anyway; some of the writing choices here are extremely questionable.

Scarlet Blaze Ch 5
Onto Ch 5. Spoilers beneath the cut.
STORY
Edelgard is a master at making enemies lol. But I guess that's what happens when you want to conquer everyone.
Lonato and Rowe being dumbasses lamo. Edelgard, your allies suck. And Lonato's purely motivated by vengeance too. Messing up plans, getting all those people killed.
MAP
New facilities. Batallions and blacksmith. Yesssss.
Also, you know in one of the past battles how Seteth wrecked Petra and Ferdinand? Well, can confirm, that I'm on casual and not classic mode lol. They're still here.
Randolph is so fucking boring.
Poor Petra got the same dialogue she did with Byleth about liking hot over cold. Couldn't they think of anything new for her to say?
SHEZ & HUBERT C SUPPORT
I'm excited for this. Hubert is by far one of my favorite Black Eagles. He's just so unapologetically . . . Hubert.
Wait, I can pick getting jealous of Edelgard, for getting to train with Hubert. 100% this. I love so, so much the more varied answers here.
I love how Hubert's making this huge deal out of a commoner getting the honor to train with Lady Edelgard, like it's some oh so rare present you're lucky to get, but like . . . Dimitri and Dedue? Half the Golden Deer are commoners? It's not so rare as you think, bub, it's just Adrestia lacks any commoners in their route.
I really think Adrestia puts way more importance on rank.
FERDINAND & LINHARDT C SUPPORT
Linhardt's design is very pretty in this game.
Linhardt's a good artist if he can copy it exactly.
Side note, I hate realism in literature. Mark Twain is torture for me.
Ferdinand asked for a portrait. I mean, if I looked like Ferdinand, I wouldn't mind a realistic portrait.
Ferdinand's quite full of himself, lamo, calling himself the personification of nobility. Poor Linhardt.
SIDE BATTLES
Extra quests are basically monster fights? Are they worth it?
"If we were done with you, we'd kill you, not abandon you." Good, old Hubert. He was talking about Shez's powers.
Edelgard's redesign screams anime magic girl princess.
"Did Hubert threaten you? Don't let it get to you." She's really dense, hunh. Most people don't like getting threatened by the second in command.
"Enemy Rodrigue appeared." MY HEART. Noooo. Didn't like fighting him at all.
Petra wants to go on an expedition with me. How could I say no to her? That was a bit underwhelming. All that stuff with the horses just felt a bit like a waste of time.
Only female units challenge. That's interesting. I'm guessing there's a male units only challenge coming along?
I don't want to fight Gustave :(
On a side note, this game really suffers from "I must retreat" syndrome.
MAIN BATTLE
Fog of war. My favorite. /s
LAMO why is it every time someone sides with Edelgard, they're evil? And working with TWSITD? Like Rowe.
I don't like Caspar's hair. It looks like a pincushion.
NOOOOO, Ingrid's here. Nooooo. I refuse to fight her. And I think I heard Jeralt.
Lamo, Lonato died. Gotta restart.
Oh, thank God, Ingrid retreated.
Aww, poor Ashe is upset Lonato betrayed Dimitri. :(
Edelgard "family should never fight family." Girl, you started a fucking war. What did you think would happen? What an ignorant sentiment from someone who takes her actions.
Lonato's a fucking idiot too. "I could not bear to lose another son." Maybe then . . . don't try to kill Rhea because she killed your son when he tried to murder her????
Did Alois abandon his family to join a bunch of mercenaries?
Have to admit, having Byleth be nigh unbeatable really makes the whole "ashen demon" thing seem more legit.
STORY
"This victory will further our conquest." - To anyone still arguing she's not after conquest.
I'm guessing this dialogue between Arval and Shez is going to appear on every route.
Got Ashe, feel weird about it though. Like, I love him, but it feels so, so wrong to take him from the other Blue Lions so far. He's all alone. I'm sure that'll eventually change though.
Go Glouster, hahaha. This is amazing. He was working to wreck the Empire the whole time. Did Edelgard really think people would welcome invasion with open arms?
Edelgard is getting her ass kicked 🤣😂👌
Claude wanting to spare lives. It's not your fault. Edelgard is solely responsible for every death here. Let's not forget who started this.

Wait so Edelgard Stan’s say Claude is a better rival to Edelgard then Dimitri because Claude jokes in get this CF, that he wanted to be supreme ruler of Fodlan with a wink on his portrait? The route where Claude and Dimitri barely get screen time or characterization to be called a character. I think I lost brain cells.
Yeah Claude says that mockingly and they believed him despite the fact when he got the chance to rule all of Fódlan he gave it up. He didn't want it. He wanted to open borders and improve relations between nations with diplomacy and trade (which is why the Merchants say his trade policies are more open and free market and his main skills is politicking rather than martial prowess).
But these are also the people that claim Edelgard wasn't trying to assassinate Claude and Dimitri at the beginning of the game despite The Flame Emperor basically spelling it out. So they'll believe what they want to believe.

edelgard discourse under the cut...
i know this is a controversial take, but i think edelgard’s story would’ve been better recieved if she didn’t start out as the crown princess. the truth is, at her core---edelgard’s country has an imperialist past, but edelgard herself wants to give rights back to the vassal states (thats what her whole support with petra is about, and tbh, i would be surprised if edelgard did not one day give them back their freedom and indepedence entirely). but edelgard’s country is not the only one with an imperialist past. dimitri’s country committed a fuckin genocide? the leicester alliance’s whole arc with claude is about how they’re racist and horrible against the almyrans. and no matter what side you choose---all of fodlan is unified by that one at the very least previously imperialist and racist country.
what makes real life imperialism evil isn’t like. one medieval kingdom taking over another medieval kingdom. it’s the subjugation and oppression of whole groups of people. while dimitri, edelgard, and claude all go to war (though dimitri and claude may not start it) and then end up taking over an entire continent, none of them can really be compared to real life imperialists because the territories they’re taking over all started out as one country to begin with, they’re not taking away land, property, or liberty from peasants or people of color, and, in fact, edelgard’s war is honestly at least partially against her very own country and their outdated ideas and beliefs of racism, classism, sexism, ableism, etc. she’s enacting a revolution for a new government system for everyone including her own people---not just the leicester alliance and faerghus, and one she claims will give power to the peasants, free public education, a meritocracy where EVERYONE can govern regardless of religion, crest status, or country where u were born, AND if her supports with petra are to be believed, she wants to give brigid at the very least back their rights.
so like. in a way she’s kind of toppling the ACTUAL terrible parts of andrestia’s ACTUAL imperialism and tbh whats she’s doing is more in line with a peasant rebellion, and this would be a lot better recieved (and probably more clearly and concisely written) if she was like. an actual peasant tbh. of course this goes so much deeper because she’s really just a pawn in a larger game those who slither are playing, but she’s using them as much as they’re using her. she’s in a very precarious position, but she’s really trying to do as much good as she can within the very few years she has left on this earth.
OF COURSE. because this is a japanese game, we can criticize the fact that this marrative exists at all, that edelgard appears to be a ‘good imperialist’ that is just and righteous by every account of the crimson flower narrative (as is dimitri in his narrative which could be considered even more damning because dimitri has a lot less revolutionary politics) given japanese history, that a character that takes over other countries is actually right to do so. the writing kiiiinda is more imperialist and dangerous than the actual character, and that, genuinely, is more important than a fictional character’s politics.
but i still think its dangerous to blindly call characters imperialists when these terms have real life meanings, real life impacts that affect real life people every single day. and imperialism isn’t so cut and dry as ‘medieval kingdom invades another medieval kingdom but the medieval ruler is a really nice and sweet anime character!’ it’s basically every terrible and evil act in human history on a global scale? it feels like an insult to everyone whose been affected by any kind of imperialism to be like ‘this anime character who squeals at mice and makes a portrait of ur character and won’t let them see it is an imperalist’ when we should be saying ‘maybe the game is the problem, maybe there are underlying issues in some sects of japanese modern day sentiments (that can be proven by the overall rise of japanese nationalism) that have bled into the game and the perspective of the writers.’ and maybe, just maybe, that’s a more important conversation to have than ‘is this anime character BAD or GOOD’
full disclosure tho: i am white+chinese, my great-uncle was a mechanic for the flying tigers during ww2, i am MORE than aware why edelgard as a character makes people uncomfortable. i understand. and i sympathize with u. i just don’t understand why JUST edelgard makes people uncomfortable and not the game itself as well when it shows through its writing in every single route uncomfortable and often prejudiced writing. shouldn’t u be uncomfortable with the whole game or at the very least the writers and the writers’ prejudices and beliefs and not just a character? it feels like a logical fallacy here of displacing emotions on a single symbol instead of the actual source of ur distress.
especially when roleplay is often about rewriting canon, making it better. ‘transformative works.’
i’m not going to tell u u should like or not like edelgard. i can definitely recognize why she makes people uncomfy, and why other people love her. i’m just saying. u should dislike the writers most of all bc the writers are real people with real harmful ideas. edelgard is just a bunch of pixels, who has some pretty good ideas at the end of the day as a revolutionary as opposed to a direct analogue to a real life imperialist.
this has turned into a whole ass essay lmao.
