The Daughter's Return: Month 1
Stories around the Breakfast Grill
Part One | Next Chapter | Table of Contents | Read on AO3
This idea was sent to me by my good friend @kimahrii and by Anonymous! CW: Some light reader past trauma Characters: female reader x Portgas D. Ace Word Count: 2.7k
“Thatch!” you yelled, peeking your head inside the kitchen. “Fruit for breakfast again?! Where’s the bacon?”
“Sorry kid,” Thatch apologized, scooping a strange liquid into a bowl. “We’re out of charcoal.”
You scowled. “So make more.”
“We could…but were out of wood, too.”
Your eyes grew wide. “We’re three days from another island!”
“We have food! Just not anything to cook with.”
Ace popped his head in next to you. “You could use me!”
The cooks in the kitchen froze at his words, trying to decide if he was being serious or not. On one hand, the day would be hard without protein. But the last time someone tried to cook food…
You laughed. “Thatch doesn’t let people do that.”
“No,” Marco appeared from the supply closet, clearly digging for his own rations. “Thatch doesn’t let you do that. Since you almost burned down the ship last time.”
You pouted at him, your cheeks turning bright red in remembrance. “I was eleven!”
“And a walking fire hazard,” Marco grumbled and went back to the storage closet. Ace was grinning at you, but he could tell you were embarrassed, so he didn’t want to press the story any further at the moment.
“So, eggs and bacon?” Ace walked to the cooler area and reached for the eggs and meat. Thatch scowled at him but passed off the paste that he had been preparing to another crewmate, and picked up a frying pan.
“I’m cooking,” Thatch said, gathering a few ingredients. “I don’t trust you heathens to do it properly.”
“Yay!” you cheered. Thatch always came through for you, in some way or another. You were a lousy cook anyway, even if he had tried to teach you.
Ace wrapped his arm around you and led you out of the kitchen and onto the deck, both of you thrilled with the victory.
“Grab some water buckets!” Thatch called after you. You rolled your eyes but did as you were told.
You and Ace headed up to the secluded part of the deck, buckets in hand. Ace laid down on the deck, giving you a wink and placing his hat atop your head as he spread out.
“So,” Ace said, bathing in the morning sunlight. “You’re gonna have to tell me about this fire hazard thing, you know.”
Before you could answer, you heard footsteps coming up behind you.
“She was a fire hazard for years,” Marco griped, sitting down next to you. You groaned, wanting to crawl away and find a hole to hide in. Marco knew it all, and he certainly wouldn’t spare the details.
A chorus of voices laughed from behind him, and you realized that Ace would now have an audience as he was cooking the food. Surely everyone was coming to see if he would suffer the same humiliation as you had in the past.
“She burned everything she touched when she was younger,” Marco said. “And oh boy, you couldn’t criticize her at all without getting a flaming rock shot at you. Thankfully her aim wasn’t very good.”
“Really?” Ace was grinning, looking over at you. You tipped his hat lower to avoid making eye contact with him, but you could see him trying to catch your attention.
You could feel your cheeks starting to burn, and you could hear the sound of your hair around the tips of your ears starting to fry. You could only hope that Ace’s lucky hat wouldn’t have burn marks when you returned it to him.
Curiel laughed. “She was! How do you think Thatch got that scar around his eye?”
You stared at the ground, knowing you were giving yourself away. Most of the commanders didn’t even notice your embarrassment. They loved making fun of you, even if it was a sensitive subject in your mind.
“Ah, it’s no biggie.” Thatch gave you a playful wink, sitting down on the other side of you. “I gotta think of a cooler story though. Telling people I was beat up by a seven-year-old doesn’t sound as cool as you think it does.”
The rest of the crew laughed, and you gave a polite smile yourself, trying to bury the shame you felt at that story. You had never meant to hurt Thatch, and seeing that scar made your mind cloud with guilt some days.
You felt a hand wrap around yours, giving you a light squeeze. You met Ace’s eyes finally, and he gave you a little smile, letting you know it was okay. He wouldn’t judge you. He wouldn’t laugh at you.
“Let’s get crackin’.” Thatch passed the eggs over to you, along with a bowl and a whisk. “Just scrambled today. Nothing fancy.”
You gave a nod and released Ace’s hand to pick up the eggs and begin preparing breakfast. You had done this a million times before, ever since you could remember.
When you were little, Thatch pulled up a chair for you to stand on and taught you how to crack an egg. People told him it took you 5 times longer than anyone else in the kitchen, but Thatch made you stick with it, even when you were ready to explode with anger. You had been mad at him then, but now you could crack eggs more skillfully than most of the cooks in the kitchen.
Thatch began preparing bacon while you cracked the eggs, and Marco began cutting scallions and mushrooms to add to your bowl.
Thatch looked around nervously. “We’ve got water, right? In case it gets out of hand?”
“Dude,” Ace laughed, looking very nonchalant as he got comfortable on the deck. “Stop freaking out. I can handle it.”
“Heard that before,” Thatch mumbled, shooting a glance your way. “Okay Ace, light it up.”
Ace skillfully created low flames from his torso, keeping them contained but burning hot. Thatch carefully lined the bacon on the pan and then placed it on Ace’s stomach, watching it carefully. The second division commander gave a light chuckle, but kept the flames under control.
Thatch still didn’t seem convinced, though. He didn’t take his eyes off it, looking for any sign of disaster.
“Relax, Thatch,” Ace assured him. “You can put the bacon right on me if you want.”
Thatch physically grimaced at the offer. “That would be a major health hazard. When’s the last time you even showered?”
Ace bit his lip, trying to recall. “Do I have to answer that?”
Thatch gagged at his answer, but Marco chuckled to himself as he examined the vegetables, clearly lost in his own world. “Y/N, do you remember that month you dressed up as a scarecrow?”
“Because of the seagulls!” Rakuyo chimed in. “You were…four?”
“Oh,” Ace grinned, looking up at you. You didn’t look as mortified as you had for the previous story, and Ace was dying to hear more about your childhood. “A scarecrow, huh?”
“Yeah,” Rakuyo said. “She thought the seagulls were going to eat our vegetable garden, so every day she dressed up as a scarecrow to keep them away.”
“Too bad she didn’t realize that once we left land, we left the seagulls too!” Vista bellowed, joining in on the fun. “But hey, she was determined to stand there all day. She was convinced that standing there kept the seagulls away!”
“You guys told me it was working!” you blushed, your cheeks glowing from embarrassment.
“Damn straight we did,” Marco said, adding his ingredients to your bowl. “Kept you out of our hair for most of the day.”
You rolled your eyes. “How did I even like you as a kid? You were so mean to me! And you weren’t even a good babysitter!”
“Oh my god!” Jozu yelled, laughing to himself. “Do you guys remember when Marco let Y/N have 3 shots? He got a six-year-old hammered!”
Now it was Marco’s turn to turn red. “Now, now!” Marco defended. “That was not my fault! I turned away for thirty seconds!”
Ace was clearly humored by the story because his flames shot up, increasing the heat level.
“Hey!” Thatch hissed. “Keep it under control.”
You must’ve really scarred that man. In more ways than one. He was paranoid about everything now.
“You know what she told me?” Marco continued. “ ‘It’s in a little glass so it must be for little people.’ Three shots. In thirty seconds. And it was the good stuff, too!”
“I think I recall her claiming it tasted like candy juice,” Thatch chuckled.
“Coconut juice,” you corrected. “But it was sweet like candy.”
“You were drunk off your ass!” Marco yelled. “At six years old! And you were a mean drunk, too!”
“Shouldn’t have let me drink, then,” you shrugged, grinning at him. It was nice for the heat to be on someone else.
“Why do you think you weren’t allowed at parties until you were 13?!” Marco hissed. “Man, I was in so much trouble that night.”
“If I recall correctly-” Fossa had a grin on his face, showing he definitely did remember correctly. “Marco was put on babysitting duty all night for the drunk kid.”
“God, I didn’t sleep a wink! That was one of the scariest moments of my life. I thought for sure you were going to die. But you didn’t even throw up! You just giggled yourself to sleep and then slept like a rock all night!”
“Even then, you could handle your alcohol,” Thatch chuckled, bumping his shoulder against yours.
“And then that time you ran away!” Marco groaned. “That was probably the most scared I’ve been in my life, actually. God, I was sure I was Pops was going to kill me for losing you.”
Ace perked up, interested in your rebellion. “Ran away?”
“I was five!” you shouted. “And you weren’t listening to me!”
“We had to go grocery shopping, which you agreed to do!”
“I was bored! I would’ve found my way back!”
“Like hell you would’ve,” Marco shot back. “You would’ve found your way straight to a Naval Base.”
“Oh, I will need this story,” Ace said, instantly intrigued. He tried to turn to face you and Marco, but Thatch smacked him back into place.
“You have food on you, in case you forgot,” Thatch scolded. “Stay still.”
“She ran from Marco and got picked up by some bounty hunters,” Jozu explained, ignoring the ongoing bickering you and Marco were partaking in. “They were taking her to a Naval Base to turn her in for her bounty.”
Ace raised his eyebrow at you, trying not to laugh. “How’d you get away from them?”
You shrugged. “They ran off. Marco grabbed me and took me back to the ship before they came back.”
“That is not what happened,” Marco cackled. “That is not what happened at all.”
A few others joined in on the laughter, but you didn’t understand. That’s exactly how you remembered it. “What are you talking about?” you asked, looking around.
“Don’t act modest!” Rakuyo called out, like he was trying to pull out a story that you weren’t aware of.
“Come on,” Ace begged. “Tell me.”
“I don’t…” you trailed off, looking at Marco for help. You really thought that was the story. You were certain Marco had rescued you.
Marco watched you closely, trying to see if you were bluffing. “Holy shit,” he mumbled after a few moments.  “Did nobody tell you?”
“When exactly was that supposed to come up?” Thatch replied softly, taking the scrambled eggs and pouring them into the pan.
“What?” you demanded. “What happened?”
“You killed those guys,” Vista said, chuckling at his own words. “After you ate that fruit, you set off an explosion. Marco went to investigate, and found you at the heart of it all.”
“No.” You laughed nervously, looking around the deck at everyone’s faces. Vista was always making up absurd stories; making fun of how gullible you could be. You refused to fall for it again. “I was five. I couldn’t have done that.”
“You did.” Marco leaned across you and grabbed a piece of bacon from the plate.
“No,” you reiterated. “I remember you coming and getting me. I remember-”
“The crater you left? The ash? How exhausted you were after?” Marco asked, pressing you to remember. “You told me that those guys were trying to grab you, and then they just disappeared. You think they had time to run away?”
You knew he was right, but you didn’t want to believe him.
It’s not like it mattered. You had killed plenty of people, both accidentally and intentionally. And those two men weren’t good people. They had wanted you dead. You were just a kid when it happened, too. It was so long ago, the details were fuzzy when you thought back to it.
But still. How had you not realized that they had died by your hand? Had you chosen to be oblivious for this long? Had a part of you realized what you had done and tried to block it out?
“Badass,” Ace said. He patted your knee gently, bringing you out of your thoughts and back to the present.
“Yeah.” You gave a weak smile, trying to show that it wasn’t bothering you.
Thankfully, Thatch finished up his breakfast cooking at just the right time, and everyone immediately forgot what you had been talking about. They were far more interested in food than in embarrassing stories from your childhood.
Ace extinguished his flames and jumped up to grab food. You watched everyone, trying to force yourself to move, but you couldn’t. You were stuck thinking about those men.
Thankfully Ace fought the other commanders for double portions and came back with plates for each of you.
“You okay?” he asked, sitting down next to you.
“Yeah.” You shook your head a little, trying to clear it and the old memories that had resurfaced.
“It was nice hearing about your childhood,” Ace said, picking up some bacon. “You sounded cute.”
“They’re going to pay for those stories,” you grumbled, shoving eggs into your mouth.
“I was told they have some really old bounty posters of you too. I heard you might even be missing a tooth in one of your younger ones.”
You shot him a glare. “You better not go looking for them.”
“Oh darling,” he shot you a mischievous grin. “You know that the first thing I’m going to do after this. And I can’t wait to see them.”

so how do loveisland!harry x yn get paired together then?
i’m glad u asked anon ahahah
“Are you ready to meet out next islander?” Laura Whitmore, the co-presenter of the show asked.
The sun was scorching down on you as you were stood in line with the five other girls. You were stood in the middle, in between Gemma and Paige.
Gemma had already been coupled up with Liam and Tasha was with Andrew and now it was time for the next man to walk down the villa to meet his match.
Literally
“Yes!” A chorus of islanders replied, whilst you stood with your hands in front of you so you had something to play with to calm your nerves.
“Okay, let’s welcome guy number 3.”
Everyone cheered and clapped and awaited the guy to walk down the side of the villa and towards where you were all standing.
Because you were on the far side you couldn’t get first glance at him, but as he slowly made his way down and further towards you you could feel your heart start to buzz with butterflies.
When he finally arrived in front of Laura, giving her a gentleman’s hug and cheek kiss, he turned towards all of you and waved to say hello.
He was gorgeous. Pretty. Handsome. Adorable.
He was just your type to a T. Although you didn’t know when the cameras would be on you, if someone was recording you right now you’d no doubt be blushing from how immediately attracted you were to this man.
“Harry, welcome.”
Harry.
What a perfect name for a perfect man. You only hoped his personality was as charming as his exterior, because he looked as delicious as a banana-split sundae right now.
“Thank you. Happy to be here.” He replied and it send a warmth, hotter than the already burning sun; into your chest. His voice was so melodic and toned.
“How are you dealing with the heat?”
“It is very hot isn’t it?” He joked and everyone laughed, including you.
“So here are our girls.” Laura panned her hand to show off all your stunning women. “Two are already coupled up but you still have the choice between four more girls. Paige, Y/N, Indiyah and Amber.”
“Yes.” Harry nodded in understanding. His eyes kept brushing over Amber and you couldn’t help but think he had already decided who he liked - and it wasn’t you.
His eyes briefly brushed back down the line and your eyes met his. From here you could make out they were green, but you would do anything to see them a little bit closer up. His smile was cheeky and it made you smile too, but you tried to remain as calm as possible so it wasn’t too awkwardly obvious how into him you were.
“However the choice isn’t yours.” Here came the plot twist.
“No?” Harry raised his eyebrows.
“No. Instead, the public have coupled you up with the girl they think you’d be best with.”
“Oh okay.” He nodded his head.
“Y’more nervous now?” Laura tried to dig for a little more of a reaction than he was giving already.
“No. They’re all really stunning people so I would be happy with any of them.” He said it so genuinely that you couldn’t stop your heart from wanting him more and more.
It didn’t help that he just looked absolutely divine. He wasn’t overly chunky and muscly like the other guys were, but instead he was perfectly toned. He had just the right amount of muscles and the tattoos were just a glorious addition. Normally you weren’t too into them, but for a man as handsome as him you’d let it slide.
“Eyes on anyone in particular though.”
“Maybe. Maybe.” He said but looked down at his shoes so it wasn’t as obvious who he was talking about. No doubt Amber though. She was stunning.
“Harry. The girl that you are going to be coupled up with is….” The suspension really had you hanging. “Y/N.”
Instead of the normal reaction of a simple nod or no reaction at all because you’re not overly happy, Harry fist bumped the air and shouted ‘yes!’. The rest of the islanders laughed and Harry quickly walked over to you, not wasting another second without getting to greet you.
“Hi.” He said softly against your ear as he leaned down to politely hug you.
“Hi.” You whispered back, trying your hardest to keep you excitement contained.
“Y’look a very happy man Harry.” Laura stated the obvious.
Harry stood close behind you, but you were too nervous to turn around just yet. He smelt amazing and you’d have to ask him what he used so you could buy it an spray it over your pillow sheets.
“So so happy. Yes.”
“I’m taking it Y/N was your ‘maybe’ from before?”
“Maybe.” He answered and you smiled at how this experience had just gone from amazing to extraordinary.

Their appointment ended fifteen minutes ago, but they weren't done quite yet. An elegantly dressed woman approached their well-appointed table with a smile.
“These are the final three dishes you can sample today. But, if you’re not satisfied, I’d be happy to set up another appointment for you.”
Ethan did his best to contain his annoyance. He wanted this done already, and the time restraints seemed preposterous to him, especially since they had booked the last appointment of the day. But he held it in; after all, he wanted this to be a happy experience for his fiancee. So instead of voicing his true opinion, he merely smiled.
“I’m sure we can make a selection based on what we’ve sampled,” Kaycee smiled. “Isn’t that right, Ethan?”
“Mmm. I suppose."
“Then, I’ll give you some privacy to try these. If you have any questions, I’m right outside the door.”
The clicking of her heels echoed as she walked across the empty room. Ethan and Kaycee waited silently until they heard the door click behind her to dig in.
“So!” she beamed, rubbing her hands together with delight. “What do we have now!”
“It looks like coq au vin, almond-crusted salmon, and chateaubriand.”
“All fancier than anything this Philly girl ever thought she’d serve at her wedding, but let’s give it a go!”
“You act as if you were raised solely on Geno’s Philly steaks and pretzels.”
“You’re not far off,” she giggled.
“Really? Should I get your mother on the phone? I’m sure she’d have a different story.”
“She sure would,” Kaycee laughed. “And it would end with her yelling at me, so, please…. Let’s not do that.”
“I love having something to hold over your head,” he winked, lifting a forkful of the coq au vin to his mouth. Biting into the succulent morsel of meat, a slow groan usually reserved for smaller venues escaped him.
“That good?” Kaycee grinned. “I haven’t heard that sound from you since our day off together last week.”
“Mmm. If I could find a way to bring those two things together, I might just believe in heaven. You’ve got to try this.”
Kaycee stuck her fork into the dish and took a bite. Her eyes widened, signaling her approval, though more tepid than Ethan's.
“You don’t like it?” He asked.
“No, I do! It’s really good, it’s just….”
“Just?”
“I don’t know, it’s not what I pictured having at our wedding.”
“Then what do you picture?”
She closed her eyes and tossed her head back, biting her lower lip as she appeared deep in thought.
“I know! My mom’s Braciole. I know it’s not standard wedding fare, and there is no way I can ask my mother to make it, but….”
“I don’t care what standard is. If you wanted Big Macs and fries served, that’s what we’d be having….”
“Well…” she interrupted.
“I was exaggerating! But Braciole… we could do that. Let’s ask the caterer if they could prepare some for us to test… on another day, of course.”
“Of course!” She smiled. “You wouldn’t mind?”
“Not at all! I just want you happy.”
“OK, and if we like it… Braciole and coq au vin it is!”
“Both?”
“Sure,” she shrugged. “It’s good to give people a choice… and the way you moaned over that coq au vin? It’ll get me raring to go for our wedding night.”
“Well,” he chuckled. “I think our menu is just about finalized.”
 ~~~~~
A little over one year later…
The kitchen was filled with a lovely aroma as pots and pans bubbled with the offerings of that evening’s feast. He was a bit frazzled, even though everything was well under control. Everything needed to be perfect tonight. The dining room was already set with… the table adorned with the exact same linens, china, crystal, and silverware from their wedding the year before. When he called the caterer to inquire about renting the items, they thought it was so endearing they offered to prepare their wedding meal, but Ethan assured him he had that under control.
He jumped when his phone rang… it was Sienna, who had been kind enough to get Kaycee out of the house for the afternoon, advising they’d soon be home. He thanked her profusely and met his wife at the door, a blindfold in hand. She teased him, asking if he planned on getting that kinky so soon? But as he snuggly tied the knot behind her head and led her to the dining room with a smile, it was a definite possibility, he assured, but later.
Once they were standing in front of the candlelit table, he uncovered her eyes and smiled when she gasped.
“Ethan, everything is beautiful! Wait, are these the dishes we had at our wedding?”
“They are. I got everything we used that day, from the napkins to the candle holders.”
Words failed her as she turned to him with a bright smile. “Ethan, this is so… I don’t know what to say!”
“You don’t need to say anything, but I do want you to eat,” he pulled back the chair, and once she was settled him, dinner was served.
About an hour later, the couple was relaxing on the sofa. A very full but content, Kaycee rested her head on Ethan’s shoulder.
“I can’t believe you learned to make my Mom’s Brasiole!” She said as she rubbed her belly, “And the caterer’s coq au vin too!”
“Well, I love cooking, but even if I didn’t, I’d learn how to make 30 different meals if it meant seeing you this happy.”
“I am happy, and not just because the food was downright orgasmic. But because you did this for me. You have no idea how much this means or how loved I feel.”
Ethan leaned over and gave his wife a gentle kiss.
“Good, because you are loved. I’ll tell you what, this is our new tradition! I’ll make this every year on our anniversary. What do you say?”
“Every anniversary? Won’t you want a break once in a while?”
“Nope, what I want is to make you smile. So, every year?”
“Sounds like you’ve got a set date, Dr. Ramsey!” She stood up from the couch and extended her hand with a smile. “Now, why don’t we put that blindfold to better use?”
~~~~~
As the years passed, Ethan kept his promise no matter how they celebrated the day, and their celebrations took on many forms. Some years, work kept them busy, and it felt like just another day until Kaycee returned home to the delicious aroma that filled the air. Other times, it took a little creativity for Ethan to accomplish his task. She thought they’d surely skip the tradition the year they spent their anniversary in Tuscany. But Ethan was undeterred. He couldn’t make the meal at their hotel, so he rented a nearby house for the day and surprised his wife with their traditional dinner.
But some years weren’t quite that fancy. One of Kaycee’s favorites of all was the year she and Ethan were on parental leave together after Emma's birth. With the baby finally asleep, the exhausted mom collapsed on the couch. As she was trying to recall if she had showered that day or was it the day before? Ethan pulled up two tray tables and presented two paper plates with their special meal.
“Ethan!” she gasped. “What is this?”
“You didn’t forget our anniversary, did you?” He frowned.
“Considering I said happy anniversary before, I think it’s fair to say I remembered! But… how did you find time to do this? We have a newborn. I never expected….”
“I made everything the other day when your Mom was in town.”
“You mean the day we took Emma out of the house so you could get some much-needed rest?”
Ethan merely shrugged.
“I froze all the food after. I knew I’d be able to heat it up for you today.”
“But you were supposed to rest that day!”
“I did… a little, but it was more important to keep my promise to my wife.”
She moved her hand to the back of his head and pulled him in for a tender kiss.
“How’d I ever get so lucky?” she asked.
“If you ask me, I’m the one.”
~~~~~
She knew the day wouldn’t be easy, but she promised herself she’d try not to cry. She’d do her best to be happy; she knew that’s what he’d want her to do. She had been staying with Emma and her family and didn’t want to make a fuss or bring everyone down. Her daughter was well aware of what day it was but decided to follow her mother’s lead. Finishing the dishes, she saw Kaycee reading in her favorite chair and smiled.
“Hey, Mom,” she asked softly. “Is there anything special you’d like to do today? It’s just you and me, so I’m happy to do whatever you want.”
“Well, that new pizza place opened in town, and I thought we could order from there tonight, my treat. What do you say?”
“That's a possibility,” Emma nodded. “What time do you want to have dinner?”
“I’d like to take a nap now, so how about around six.”
“That sounds perfect,” Emma grinned. “I’ll be sure to get you up if you sleep through the alarm.”
“I’ve only done that once, my dear,” Kaycee laughed.
“Even so.”
Several hours later, Kaycee woke up. She wasn’t as quick on her feet anymore, but she managed to get down the stairs alone and found her daughter setting the dining room table with her best china.
“That’s a little fancy for pizza, don’t you think?” Kaycee smiled.
Caught off guard, Emma jumped. “Mom! You scared me. You’re up earlier than I expected.”
“I had to be. I wasn’t going to sleep through the alarm and have you gloating,’ Kaycee winked. “But you haven’t answered my question. Why so fancy for pizza?”
Her daughter’s face softened as she smiled a tiny grin. “Because we’re not having pizza, Mom. Why don’t you sit right here.”
With her heart beginning to race a little faster, Kaycee sat down. Moments later, Emma emerged from the kitchen, two plates in hand.
“One for you,” she beamed, “and one for me.”
Tears rushed to Kaycee’s eyes, and she let out a gasp.  “It’s… it’s….”
“Happy Anniversary, Mom,” Emma said, leaning over and taking her mother in her arms. “I know it’s got to be so hard without Dad here, but the love you two shared, it still deserves to be honored.”
“I miss him,” Kaycee wept softly. “But all I have to do is look at you, and I know part of him is still here. But my sweet girl, how did you know….”
“Well, I may not have followed you and Dad into the medical field, but I wouldn't be such a good lawyer if I wasn't observant, you know. And, if watching Dad make this dinner for you every year was not enough….”
Overcome with emotion, Emma covered her mouth and closed her eyes. She promised herself she wouldn't cry, at least not yet.
“When we were at the beach house last summer after Daddy got the diagnosis… he told me all about this tradition. He asked if I’d learn these recipes, and of course, I agreed. He made me make them a dozen times until he said I finally got it right. Then I promised him I’d make this dinner for you every year on your anniversary, and it’s a promise I intend to keep.”
Tears rushed down Kaycee’s cheeks as she beckoned her daughter near. The two women held each other for a long while until Emma broke the tension.
“Mom, the food’s gonna get cold, and if I have to put it in the microwave….”
“Oh,” Kaycee laughed, “if you do that, your Dad will do whatever he needs to send a storm our way!”
Clasping her daughter's face in her hands, Kaycee smiled, and Emma swore her mother looked twenty years younger.
“No more tears, my sweet girl. Let’s eat. Let’s enjoy this beautiful meal together like my Ethan would want us to.”
Emma nodded and opened a bottle of wine. Pouring two glasses, she handed one to her mom.
“To Daddy, and you, and the love that led to me being here. I love you, Mom.”
“You’re the best of both of us, my dear. Thank you for all of this.”
The two women enjoyed the rest of their meal with smiles and laughter, nary a tear. And that night, while Kaycee showered, Emma finished one last task. Sneaking out just in time, she leaned against the door and smiled.
“I told you I’d get it done, Dad,” she whispered, then snuck off down the hall to the love of her own.
Kaycee shuffled out of the bathroom and toward her bed, noticing a bright red envelope before she sat down. Taking a deep breath, she held it close to her heart for a long while. Her frail hands trampled as she broke the seal. Then, her gentle smile grew three times brighter. She’d know that handwriting anywhere.
My Dearest Kaycee,
If you’re reading this, it’s our first anniversary apart, and I know it's a lot to ask, but I'd like for you not to be sad. While we may not be together, neither are we apart. Love like ours is rare, and it would take much more than death to separate us. So if you're ever missing me, spend time in the garden we planted together and listen to the birds that flock there. I will be in their song. Or stand at the beach where we shared so many beautiful days and watch the waves roll in. I will be the sea air that surrounds you. Or, best of all, look into the eyes of our Emma, the greatest gift you ever gave me, and you’ll know I am there.
She promised to help keep our tradition going. I promised you long ago to always make sure you knew how loved you were on this day, and, my precious Kaycee, a promise I make to you, is a promise that must be kept. Death be damned.
I love you for all time and eternity.
Until we meet again, my love.
Ethan
Kaycee rolled over and wrapped her blanket tightly around her. Though she missed him terribly, she smiled as she heard her grandchildren laughing as their parents tucked them in just a room away... and she knew, he was there. He was in their laughter, he was in her tears, he was in everything that surrounded her, but most of all, he was in her heart, and that was where he'd always stay.
Hello! I hope you're doing fine and thanks a lot for the events :)
for the red ribbon event, can I ask for Glorfindel + "Aww come here!" "Nonono your hands are cold! What'd you do, dip them in the snow?" "It's not snowing." "Tell that to your hands!"
☃: I am doing fine, thank you very much and you're welcome :) Naughty and mischievous Glorfy coming right up! Enjoy!
“Aww come here my love,” icy fingers wiggled their way over to your arms while you sat knitting by the fireplace, basking in the warmth you were receiving. Unfortunately, your lover had other plans on his mind after his return trip from scouting with the young Lords of Rivendell.
Inching closer to your half-seated position, ready to make a sprint for the door on the opposite end of the room, you were calculating all the possibilities of escaping his dangerous clutches and so far nothing gave a hopeful solution. Glaring at his hands as they gained grounds, you reached for your sewing pan to throw it at him, “Come any closer and I will not miss—”
Launching himself at you as you spoke, his fingers managed to graze your shoulder as you barely escaped his clutches. “Come on now my love, I simply wish for a hug. Give your darling one please,” the little shit-eating grin on his face he sent your way as you both rounded the table was making your blood boil.
You were beyond perplexed at his statement and wanted to throw your sewing pan at his head, “Nonono, your hands are cold! Get it through your head, don’t put those icicles on me—ah!”
Cutting you off and gracefully dancing around the table, Glorfindel’s hands snatched your arm the moment you attempted to dive to the right and tugged your squirming figure into his embrace. Howling at your antics, he dug his fingers into your side, tickling you which caused the coldness to seep through your thick fabric and bit at your flesh. “Glorf—ah, no! Oh, Eru, why are your hands so cold?” you practically cried into his embrace as he delivered his onslaughter of terror, “did you dip them in the snow or something?”
“My sweet dear,” he marvelled as he turned around with you still in his hold and waddled over to the window, “it’s not snowing.”
“Why don’t you tell that to your hands,” you snapped as you wiggled in his arms like a fish out of water. Glorfindel bellowed at your antics, still refusing to let you go now that he finally had his hold on you. If the smirk in his voice wasn’t enough to make you retaliate, then it must have been his fingers still digging into your sides, occasionally running up and down to leave trails of goosebumps.
“Why don’t you wish to hug me, darling, don’t you know I’m cold and I’m in need of warming up?” he grinned as he nuzzled his face into yours, lifting you higher in the process.
“Go warm up by the fireplace then.”
“But I have you...”
Flabbergasted at his reason, you struggled to respond, only spitting out incomprehensible words that urged your golden hair lover to crush you against him. You were hit with ultimate defeat and it annoyed you, “I don’t believe you sometimes. Me of all people, ah…er…you’re evil and I don’t like it. I don’t like you.”
“Well I love you, so deal with it by cuddling me.”
Let's (re)Read The Eye of the World! Chapter 7: Out of the Woods
Tumblr media
Welcome back to my continued to be filled with spoilers reread of The Wheel of Time. If you don't like spoilers, retreat to the woods or possibly start vandalizing your nearest auto body customizer, depending on what's more convenient to you! If you do, read on.
First, I realize I'd been forgetting to do chapter icons since my bad day so let's cover those real fast!
The Gleeman had a harp icon, which is sort of Thom's personal chapter symbol, so naturally he's the biggest player in that chapter.
The Westwood had a heron-marked sword icon, which usually refers to blademasters, including Rand. It likely symbolizes Tam and his recollections of the Bloody Snows.
Both this chapter and Winternight have a leafless tree with the moon behind it, often referring to travels through the woods at night (like Rand had to do to get back to the house in chapter five). I guess in this chapter it just refers to getting out of the woods because dawn breaks early into it and Rand reaches the village soon after.
Okay, hopefully that's the last time I forget and realistically it is the twenty-sixth to last. Onto the text!
He no longer felt the strip of cloth digging into his shoulders, but then he felt nothing in his shoulders except numbness, nor in his feet, for that matter. In between, it was another matter. His breath came in labored pants that had long since set his throat and lungs to burning, and hunger twisted his stomach into queasy sickness.
You can tell Jordan was no stranger to all-night marches through the woods. His military experience really elevates a lot of these kinds of sequences.
Vaguely he caught the smell of woodsmoke. At least he was almost there if he could smell the village chimneys. A tired smile had only begun on his face, though, when it turned to a frown. Smoke lay heavy in the air—too heavy.
Poor Rand, having come so far only to be smacked in the face by reality now. At least he's clever enough to figure out what he missed: that the Trollocs heading down the road to his house implied they'd been coming from where the road led.
Grimy-faced villagers, some yet in their night clothes, poked through the ashes, here pulling free a cookpot, there simply prodding forlornly at the wreckage with a stick.
The Grinch should have just burned the Whos out of Whoville. There wouldn't have been any wimpy singing then!
The destruction seemed scattered at random through the village. Five houses marched untouched in one row, while in another place a lone survivor stood surrounded by desolation.
Is it actually at random, or did every house hit have a young man in the general age range living in it?
Egwene, running by with her arms full of bedsheets torn into bandages, looked around at them without slowing. Her eyes stared at something in the far distance; dark circles made them appear even larger than they actually were.
Like Rand, Egwene has spent the whole night running around and trying to deal with the wounded, though she has the slight benefit that her family isn't among them. Though she's seen a lot more people, and probably a lot of dead men. It's no surprise that when she figures out Moiraine is her ticket out of here, she runs. She's traumatized already.
He wondered why her hands were clean when smudges of soot marked her cheeks.
Because something even more valuable than the printing press survived the Breaking, Rand. People know to wash their hands when tending the sick and wounded, but she hasn't had time to clean herself in any other way.
Alsbet cracked one’s skull with a frying pan. She took one look at the ashes of our house this morning and set out hunting around the village with the biggest hammer she could dig out of what’s left of the forge, just in case any of them hid instead of running away.
Really, it's kind of surprising that the Two Rivers folk needed Perrin to come home when they had Alsbet.
“You have to do something. You have to. You’re the Wisdom.” Pain twisted her face, but only for an instant, then she was all hollow-eyed resolve again, her voice emotionless and firm.
Poor Rand, to have come so far and survived so much only to be told it's all for nothing. And poor Nynaeve, to finally have everyone's unconditional respect only when she can't help them as much as she wants to.
Suddenly he was knocked back a step as Egwene cannoned into him, throwing her arms around him. Her hug was hard enough to bring a grunt from him any other time; now he only looked silently at the door behind which his hopes had vanished.
I'm really sad that their relationship is all downhill from here (well, flat for a few books but then downhill). It's a shame that they can't come to express this kind of care for each other at the end.
Oh and because I'm being fair, note that Jordan is using an anachronistic verb here. A lot of people give Sanderson shit for his anachronisms but Jordan wasn't quite perfect, especially in this first book.
Another of the Dhurran stallions passed him, its harness straps tied around the ankles of a big shape draped with a dirty blanket. Arms covered with coarse hair dragged in the dirt behind the blanket, and one corner was pushed up to reveal a goat’s horn.
Earlier Rand saw one of the stallions dragging something towards what he thought were Bel Tine bonfires, but we can now discount that impression well before he catches up to the truth. The three flames are just for cremating the enemy dead.
As he made his way down the Green, people called to him, some from the ruins of their homes, asking if they could help. He heard them only as murmurs in the background, even when they walked alongside him for a distance as they spoke. Without really thinking about it he managed words that said he needed no help, that everything was being taken care of. When they left him, with worried looks, and sometimes a comment about sending Nynaeve to him, he noticed that just as little.
This is a little microcosm of a lot of Rand's interactions with his allies to come, and it's no surprise he doesn't associate this dissociation with anything negative when it's rather adjacent to his meditation technique AND on this first big occasion it's going to pay off as well as he could hope.
All that was left of the peddler’s wagon, though, were blackened iron wheel-rims leaning against the charred wagon box, now on the ground. The big round hoops that had held up the canvas cover slanted crazily, each at a different angle.
Is there any Darkfriend who doesn't get screwed over by their association with the Shadow?
Suddenly he found himself facing something scrawled on the inn door, a curving line scratched with a charred stick, a charcoal teardrop balanced on its point. So much had happened that it hardly surprised him to find the Dragon’s Fang marked on the door of the Winespring Inn.
Rather amusingly, despite the ill-intent of the symbol, it serves as a foretelling of who has come to the inn on the first day of spring.
“Nynaeve wouldn’t do anything. She said she couldn’t help him. I knew . . . I hoped you’d think of something.”
It's also something of a microcosm of the series as a whole that every authority figure is failing Rand, even these ones who mean well. By the end of the series, virtually all the major power players will have been replaced by Rand or his enemies, or be part of a weird prophecy clique that meant forsaking all of their actual duties that he was counting on them fulfilling. The Wise Ones are basically the only exception and they've spent the last 3,500 years prepping for his arrival.
“I was just wondering,” Thom said, tamping his long-stemmed pipe with his thumb, “if the Mayor knew who scrawled the Dragon’s Fang on his door.” He peered into the bowl, then looked at Tam and replaced the unlit pipe between his teeth with a sigh. “Someone seems not to like him anymore. Or maybe it’s his guests they don’t like.”
Thom is of course so addicted to speaking in riddles that he can't give a straightforward bit of advice in a medical emergency. Thanks Thom!
“We just ran like chickens with a fox in the henyard till Master Lan put some backbone into us.” “No need to be so hard,” Thom said. “You did as well as anyone could. Not every Trolloc lying out there fell to the two of them.”
I suspect that really some people - like Alsbet - were putting up a struggle the whole time and that Moiraine and Lan only rallied the stragglers.
Help from an Aes Sedai was sometimes worse than no help at all, so the stories said, like poison in a pie, and their gifts always had a hook in them, like fishbait.
And in this case, Moiraine has a hell of a hook.
“Some of the stories are exaggerated, in a way,” Thom added, as if the words were being dragged from him.
It actually really pains Thom to suggest a young boy seek out the Aes Sedai, all things considered. And it says a good deal about him that he can put aside a very justifiable hatred, even only a little, for the good of a complete stranger.
“Seven bands. Seven! That many have not acted together since the Trolloc Wars. Bad news piles on bad news. I am afraid, Lan. I thought we had gained a march, but we may be further behind than ever.”
Trolloc bands are another thing that will rapidly become irrelevant. I think they get mentioned again in Jordan's last book, but really only as a background detail. I'm much more interested in Moiraine saying they're "further behind than ever". They weren't especially behind in New Spring. What's changed since then?
Surely there must be something about an Aes Sedai to mark her for what she was.
The ageless face. The Great Serpent ring. Sorry that she's not wearing a jersey that says "Damodred 01" so that you know she's the tiniest member of the Blue Ajah.
“A night like that can give a man bad dreams, Rand. If you have nightmares, you must tell me of it. I can help with bad dreams, sometimes.”
I think the sleep deprivation is both making Moiraine seem creepier than she intends to and preventing her from considering that Rand wouldn't have had much sleep today either.
“I’ll pay any price in my power if you help him. Anything.”
Just imagine if Rand had been involved in the Bowl of the Winds debacle; he'd make Elayne and Nynaeve look like Nelson Mandela. "We'll give you all land within a hundred miles of a river if you just agree to use the Bowl that we hereby agree has always been your property and that we owe you rental payments with interest on."
(Yes Rand is a shrewder negotiator by that point but come on he's spent a few pages panicking about Aes Sedai help and instantly agrees to be screwed over every which way if she'll just help him.)
“Death comes sooner or later to everyone,” the Warder said grimly, “unless they serve the Dark One, and only fools are willing to pay that price.”
This is foreshadowing for the Forsaken resurrections of course, but it's also amusingly backwards. Serving the Dark One means you get MORE deaths per lifetime than the average, not fewer.
“You think only of taking care of me. Why should he not think the same of his father?” Lan scowled, but fell silent.
Just like Rand spent all of yesterday afternoon hoping Lan would adopt him, Lan has spent much of his freetime hoping he gets to adopt the crazy Aiel farmer, so seeing him suddenly so loyal to his REAL adoptive father is very hurtful after such a miserable night.
National Collect Rocks Day
Be a geologist for a day and see what interesting rocks you can find. Pick up a book on local rocks or hop on the internet to identify what you find.
Why not live out a childhood dream and be a geologist for the day in celebration of Collect Rocks Day? If you’re the type of person who can’t resist picking up a pebble or two at the beach, or is always on the lookout for shiny minerals when they dig the garden, then this is a chance to make time for finding attractive stones and crystals. People of all ages can use Collect Rock Day as a chance to search for precious and beautiful rocks.
History of Collect Rocks Day
The study of rocks and earth, otherwise known as geology, has been around since at least the 4th century. In Ancient Greece, Aristotle made some important observations about geological changes and the work in the field of geology continued on from there. As the Romans needed certain rocks to build their empire, they became particularly adept at studying, mining and acquiring various types of rocks.
While some folks might simply overlook the importance of rocks, others have a keen eye and can see the unique ways that the planet expresses itself through different kinds of rocks! Collect Rocks Day was established to show honor and appreciation for this interesting activity of looking for, gathering and maintaining a collection of stones and rocks.
How to Celebrate Collect Rocks Day
Get into the groove of Collect Rocks Day by joining up with some friends and participating in some events and activities. Start with some of these ideas for celebrating the day:
Collect Rocks with School Kids
On Collect Rocks Day, school teachers may wish to combine rock collecting with some learning around different rock types and how they are formed. Perhaps it would be fun to head out to a park or forest area, or even just the backyard, for kids to search for unique and interesting rocks or stones that they can collect and learn more about. Teachers could encourage students to check out books from the library that are centered around the theme of geology and rock collecting.
Once the kids in the class have been outdoors and have collected their rocks, it might be great to build a lesson around the concepts of geology. And don’t forget to create a display so that the rock collection can be viewed by other classes or even the whole school!
Visit a Rock Museum
One way to show appreciation for Collect Rocks Day would be to visit a museum that houses a professional array of collected rocks. The United States offers a wide array of geology museums within a short distance of most cities and towns. Check out one of these geology museums in celebration of the day:
Rutgers Geology Museum located in New Brunswick, New Jersey
University of Wisconsin Geology Museum in Madison, Wisconsin
Mines Museum of Earth Science in Golden, Colorado
Yavapai Geology Museum located in Grand Canyon Village, Arizona
Take a Rock Collecting Trip
For adults, Collect Rocks Day is the perfect opportunity for a trip to a fossil-filled beach in search of rocky treasures. Or why not experience something a little different and try panning for gold in a little stream or river? There could be an endless number of exciting possibilities for celebrating Collect Rocks Day in a memorable way for those who just want to get a bit creative with it!
Create a Collect Rocks Day Playlist
A superb way to celebrate any day is to be sure to have the correctly themed soundtrack to play in the background! Collect Rocks Day offers a wide array of songs that can be placed on a playlist through Spotify, Apple music or another platform and then played just for fun.
Try adding some of these rock themed songs to a playlist for the day:
Rock You Like a Hurricane by Scorpions (1984)
We Will Rock You by Queen (1977)
Rock with You by Michael Jackson (1979)
Crocodile Rock by Elton John (1972)
Jeff request guidelines
—————————————————
“Look alive, people, this is the most challenging mission of the year!” Tony yelled, startling everyone who, until his entry, had been peacefully and quietly lounging in the common room.
“What mission? I haven’t heard anything?”
“Pride! Come on guys; it’s literally tomorrow!”
“Oh,” Natasha sighed, “I wouldn’t call that challenging, probably our easiest one yet. Marching around, being gay, shitting on any homophobes we see… sounds like a typical day honestly.”
“You know it.” You raised your hand and Natasha returned your high five, though the land shark between you didn’t like to feel left out so he raised his head upwards to nudge your hands with his snout.
“Are you queer, Jeff?” you whispered, though Tony’s interruption mostly drowned you, and Jeffs returned ‘mrrr’, out.
“Yeah, that’s not the hard bit. We need to go all out and make sure people don’t think we’re doing this just because the government asked us to. Nobody accuses me of rainbow washing, especially not for the US government.”
“We are doing it because the government gave us instructions to, though.” Steve reminded.
“You mean you think we wouldn’t have done this anyway? With all the non-straight people in this building? Don’t be ridiculous, grandpa.”
“So what are your plans?” you asked. Out of interest for sure, but also to cut off any reply Steve was about to give.
“Flags!! Tons and tons of flags! Obviously, everyone grabs their own, but I have boxes and boxes, so we let everyone at the parade grab what they want.
Oh, and ‘The Avengers’ have made sizable donations to several LGBTQ+ charities; all year round, but extra this month. You’re welcome.”
“Mrrr!”
“Jeff wants to know where the flags are,” you translated. “He loves flags.”
Tony sighed, “sure Jeff, just ignore the donation… they’re in the garage.”
Jeff squealed; within seconds he was on the run, past the lift as he couldn’t reach the button, and on his way to the stairs in an attempt to hurry down. You were hot on his heels because the last time he’d tried the stairs, he’d tripped and rolled down 10 flights.
You caught up with him quickly, scooping him up and carrying him to safely call for the lift.
This time though, the whole team came with you, and soon Jeff was like the leader of a cult, a bundle of heroes following his every move. Jeff’s troop all headed down to the garage, eyes widening at the towers of boxes, filled with flags of all sorts of colours.
“Help yourself,” was all Tony had to say, and then everyone was searching for what they needed. Natasha grabbed a bisexual flag, Wanda draping the pan one atop herself. The room was filled with people giddy at the representation, grinning as they wrapped their flags like capes around their necks.
You went forth to grab your own, searching through an inordinate number of boxes just to find what you were looking for. Among the stash, you managed to find a rare box filled with small flags, the type you held and waved around rather than drape over yourself. It took some digging within it before you finally emerged with what you had been searching for: the ace flag.
But then that didn’t last long. Yelena came instantly to snatch it from you with a laugh, then dropped down to find the matching aromantic one. You rolled your eyes in mock offence, but you didn’t actually mind sitting with her and finding another asexual one.
With your new one found, you tucked it in your pocket to keep it safe before searching the boxes for more flags. A whine from Jeff stopped you, and then he came up and gently tugged at your trouser leg; he seemed sad when you looked down. You realised he didn’t know which flag to get.
“Hold this for a second, Jeff,” you said, holding out your mini flag and letting him lightly clamp his teeth around the handle. Once he’d taken it, you were free to go to the tallest stack of boxes, clamber up, and then pull a flag from the very top.
Jeff beamed when you returned with a rainbow pride flag long enough to be a blanket on him. He dropped the ace flag back at your feet, and in return, you knelt down and swung the rainbow over him. You had to roll it slightly before tying it loosely around his neck, long enough to be a cape, short enough that he wouldn’t trip.
Jeff spun excitedly at his new accessory. He tried to see it on himself first, then ran in circles around the room so all the other Avengers could see his style. Jeff’s joy was infectious; smiles followed him around the room when they saw him so happy… and that gave you an idea.
Once you were back in your room and you’d made sure Jeff was settled comfortably on your bed, it was time to pull out your phone. You’d seen plenty of videos where people brought their parents to Pride with signs offering free hugs; it had always seemed sweet; to have someone supportive and willing to share love and sharing them with those who didn’t. Now, finally, you had a perfect candidate.
Luckily, Jeff was in agreement. At the end of the video, he let out a small ‘mrrr’ before running off to make his own sign. You watched him go, knowing full well your land stark would be the true star of the show the next day.
The team gathered early the following day. They were dressed in whatever clothes they were comfortable in. After all, the main statements were the flags, accessories and face paints they wore with them, representing their identities.
When you eventually entered, all eyes turned on you. Not because of what you were wearing, no. Because of what your land shark wore.
Jeff had slept in his flag, so he remained just as wrapped in it as he had the day before. But there was a new addition to his attire, a sign written by Jeff himself:
“FRƎƎ HUGS.”
He’d never quite grasped which way the E would go.
Nevertheless, Tony grinned at the sight. “I think we’re ready to go!”
Roads were shut ahead of the start, and crowds began to gather. There was a buzz in the air, raucous and chaotic, but fun nonetheless, a whole day of people being freely and loudly themselves.
You set up at the front of the crowd, piling the boxes all around each of you and, as the parade passed, handing them out to whoever needed them. Some people recognised the group of you, and you happily took photos and listened to their crying or yelling about how much certain Avengers had helped in their coming out, or just in their lives in general. Or smiled at the others who just gave you an appreciative nod.
But, as expected, Jeff took the spot as the main attraction. He ran back and forth across the street in front of your makeshift stall. His pride cape flew behind him, and he made sure everyone got a chance to see him. The only thing stopping him was the multiple people who read his sign, crouching down in the middle of the road just to give him a hug.
Between handing out flags, you kept an eye on him. When he ran around, he was beaming, spreading joy to the crowds that passed him; they would look over at him, smile, and maybe even take a photo of the joyful land shark.
But then there would be other times, when someone was hugging Jeff. He sat still, letting them get comfort from him for as long as they needed. He would even snuggle into them too… if he could manage. Most of the time, a hug was all they needed before they would pass through, maybe picking up a flag. But others had stories to tell.
Jeff was an excellent listener, as well as being safety conscious. You saw a few occasions where people began to tell Jeff their stories as they hugged him. He’d interrupt, nudging for them to follow, then lead them to the side of the street before plopping himself back down and looking at them to continue. They would then be away from crowds; people wouldn’t have to filter past, and there would be a lesser risk of getting trampled.
The person generally ended up sitting on the floor with Jeff; he would nod earnestly as they told their story and let them hug and pet him as they wanted and needed.
You saw many people bring themselves to tears having their conversation with Jeff, even if the land shark could give little more than a ‘mrr’ in return. Despite it, they still left looking happier than before, more relieved. Jeff looked back at you every time. You would give him a thumbs up and let him continue.
Eventually, the back of the parade went past you, and your job was done, meaning it was your turn to join the crowd. Tony’s robots cleared up the rest of the boxes, and then the Avengers jumped into action, tagging on at the back of the march and showing your support.
Only… one thing was missing.
Your ace flag. The one you had checked several times throughout the day was still sticking out of your pocket. It had disappeared.
You looked frantically around the stall, wondering if it had fallen out, but it was nowhere to be found. You would have seen it by now, so unless you accidentally gave it away, someone had taken it, and there was only one other Avenger who you thought would do such a thing.
“Yelena!” you shouted. It was a struggle to be heard about all the parade noises, but she shot her head up at you. “Did you steal my flag?”
“Not since yesterday, but you did see me do that.” Yelena reached to pull her own one out, then frowned. With a little more worry, she started patting through the several pockets her outfit contained, but it looked like none of them had what she needed.
“But where-”
Jeff burst through the crowd, heading back to come see you, and the unfinished question answered itself. In his mouth, clutched like a skull and crossbones, were two mini ace flags, flapping wildly with the speed he ran.
“There.” You finished with a sigh.
You wouldn’t be getting them back. Jeff lived with you; he stole your stuff all the time. You knew you wouldn’t get it back until he wanted to give them back.
Yelena, however, was not equipped with the same knowledge.
“Give me my flag back, Jeffrey!!”
He squealed, only running faster at the challenge. There was a long way to walk yet, but you had your entertainment sorted: Land Shark vs Widow.
It would be an enjoyable day indeed.
Prompt 10.4
Tumblr media
sorry I took so long lol
Part one Part two Part three
The morning sun filtered through the windows and bounced off the wooden floor and granite countertops. Cole stood at the stove, concentrating on not burning the pancakes he was cooking. He didn’t even notice when Blaze entered the kitchen until he spoke
“Phantom.”
The villain’s voice startled him and Cole almost dropped the pan he was holding, nearly spilling pancake mix all over the floor. He turned to face him.
“Blaze.”
He poured himself a cup of coffee, humming absentmindedly as he did. It seemed nearly impossible for the villain to operate with at least three cups of coffee a day. “How’s your girlfriend?”
“She’s fine, a bit shaken up with a few bruises but she’ll probably be fine.”
He turned his attention back to the food, scooping some scrambled eggs onto a plate along with two pancakes.
“And how about you?” Blaze asked, taking a sip of his coffee.
“I’m fine,” he responded, nodding stiffly.
The villain stared at him for a moment. He knew Cole far too well to believe those words. “But are you really?”
Cole sighed and nodded again. “Yeah, why wouldn’t I be.” Blaze continued staring at him and eventually, Cole caved and filled the deafening silence. “I’m worried about her, okay? Radia would’ve killed her if she wasn’t there. It’s just… I don’t want her to get hurt.”
He took another sip of his coffee. “You care about her, that’s why the deal is in place. Having people you love will always be a vulnerability, but it’s part of being human. And besides, If any hero tries to come here I’ll kill them myself.”
The villain finished the sentence with a smirk. Cole smiled and shook his head. “I’ll never understand why you think death threats are reassuring.”
“It’s a potential solution, isn’t it?” He smiled and gave the criminal a pat on the shoulder before leaving. “Oh, and do try not to make a mess,” he called out as he left.
Danni walked into the kitchen a few minutes later. She sat down at the table and stretched, letting out a small yawn.
She wore a black hoodie and sweatpants that Cole had left in his room. The clothes were much too big for her and hung off her small frame. Her brown hair was pulled into a messy ponytail with a few strands falling into her face.
He slid a plate of pancakes and eggs to her and smiled. “You’re up late.”
She snickered. “I’ll have you know I got up at a normal time, but your boss lives in a fucking maze.”
“Yeah, okay. You could get lost in a driveway.”
She laughed and Cole laughed as well. Her smile was contagious to him and it seemed to make his worries evaporate.
She glared at him jokingly. “I hate you.
He patted her on the head and smirked. “I love you too.”
The two finished their breakfast. It was considerably better than the last time he’d cooked breakfast since the fire alarm hadn’t gone off. Danni stood up and walked to the living room, sitting down on the couch.
“If you need anything, you can come find me or Blaze,” Cole said over his shoulder.
Eventually, he left, leaving Danni to flip through the channels on the tv. She stayed like that for some time, watching several different news channels go over the same story. It seemed there weren’t any new developments regarding her case but that didn’t stop newscasters from talking about it for what felt like hours. It didn't do anything except make her nervous, listening to reporters go over the same details over and over and listening to heroes insist that they’d catch the thief soon and make sure she paid for her crimes. She sighed and turned off the tv after god knows how long.
She walked out into the hallway and began to head back to her room but all the hallways looked the same and the rooms did as well. She couldn’t even find the damn staircase.
Danni groaned and stared up at the ceiling. “How the fuck does anyone find their way around this place,” she muttered to herself.
Suddenly Danni felt cold metal digging into her back and she froze. Her heart was beating a thousand times a second and she felt like she couldn’t breathe. She hadn’t even heard someone behind her.
Danni heard a gruff voice behind her that confirmed everything she already thought. “Don’t move or I’ll shoot.”
eternally frustrated with myself because I just genuinely don’t know what I want?? specifically re: relationships but also with just everything in life lmao.
like -- I do enjoy being by myself, most of the time. I very much enjoy being able to do my own thing and not having to cater to someone else. me and my fiancé didn’t even live together long in retrospect but it legit felt like I lost myself, and that every decision I made wasn’t even my own. which, feeling like you ‘lose’ a lot of your independence in relationships probably isn’t even a thing that happens in normal, healthy relationships to well adjusted people but I have literally never had one of those lmao. I just. I like being my own person. I don’t dig the way I tend to gravitate towards people who are Very Bad for me either. Idk how I can simultaneously be independent as Fuck but also have a bad habit for codependency but. it sure does happen. And I’m terrified of letting myself end up in a bad situation again.
BUT that being said, I’m lonely and I don’t dig that feeling. I do miss having someone consistently around, and especially like. someone that actually wants to do things with me and be around me. I don’t exactly care for physical touch really so I don’t miss that necessarily but I do miss like, sharing a bed and knowing someone else is there. like yeah it’s great to be ‘living for myself’ and all but. idk.
on the same note though, I worry that some of this stems from feeling like I’m just... behind. I’m 25. I work a lot and very hard but I can’t afford my own place. my Almost Marriage didn’t pan out. sometimes I feel so lame meeting new people at work and having to answer personal questions, like no I’m not married, don’t have any kids and had to move back in with my parents. I’ve had like three major relationships in my life but am still so uncomfortable with sex and intimacy, though ngl a lot of that may be related to 1. hardcore repressing trans-ness (which is an entire other discussion) and 2. just. incompatible partners. but it’s also like. that’s so many Issues to bring into a relationship. not to mention built up things from previous relationships that just feels so unfair to burden a partner with. and like, it’s to the point where I’m genuinely embarrassed.
part of me wishes I’d stuck it out with therapy, but I was so jaded back in 2020. It was right after my engagement had fallen apart and my ex had basically said ‘yeah you need to go to therapy and work on yourself. maybe if you do that I’ll date you again.’ (Which I did need to work on myself, but when you take into account the fact that this person legitimately abused and took advantage of me, it still feels like a slap in the face. like okay **I** need to work on myself, but you’re fine, clearly. /s) I went to two sessions but ultimately stopped going because 1. the therapist was weird about the fact that at that time, I ID’d as a lesbian and 2. I realized that I essentially was like, internally accepting literally all the blame for the relationship dissolving when like... uh no. sure I absolutely was not perfect and made a lot of mistakes, but so did my ex. and I absolutely did not deserve the abuse I went through. I do remember having that epiphany during the second session and being like, ok well I’m cured now.
I’m aware none of this is a good description whatsoever, but basically my thought process ended up being that well, if I accepted that yeah I didn’t deserve what happened to me but was also partially at fault for the relationship ending, then I’d made peace with that fact and didn’t actually need this therapist. but like. I absolutely did. And still do. maybe not that specific one but like, one in general. because it’s two years later and it feels like no matter how much I crave a relationship (or feel like I crave one) I can’t actually get up the courage to try again. because it’s like, why put myself through that again? why put my entire self on the line and let someone in when it has the potential to fail. and to hurt. because good god I legitimately cannot go through something like that again. not to be dramatic but I legit would not survive it lmao.
this post isn’t even negative honestly. like yeah I’m sad over this sure but I’m annoyed more than anything. because I’m aware this is fully a Me Problem. like yeah bad shit happened to me but lots of people are able to pick themselves up and move on. I haven’t been able to. and at this point it’s probably less of a can’t and more of a won’t. once again, I’m letting fear rule my entire life.
realistically, there is nothing wrong with me. I know this in the back of my head. I’m having a hard time getting over things and that’s okay. 25 is very young and also, there isn’t anything wrong with being alone. but it very much feels like there’s something wrong with me. like wow I really am the problem, aren’t I.
okay trying this again, since it never went into the tags. This time with no linkies, short terms only, no words Tumblr doesn’t like, etc. we’ll see if it works....
Endwalker spoilers
While I'm Getting Out All These Thoughts I've Been Mulling for a Year, I want to fling into the aether some thoughts about another thing that I related really strongly to with Urianger: his struggle to figure out what the heck he felt for Moenbryda.
Before I start, let me reiterate that all headcanons are valid. What I want to dig into here is specific to me, and if it's not your hc that's cool too!
So Urianger reads, to me, as aspec, or on the ace spectrum. This can mean A LOT of things and even under the same subcategory people experience being aspec very differently. The Scions are written intentionally vaguely, and in the same way that the game is written to invite you to coauthor aspects of the story, they invite you to coauthor their characterization.
So I will unabashedly admit to projecting my own orientation onto Urianger. I'm demi, and the way that pans out for me is I don't experience traditional attraction at all until I have a strong connection with someone. (For many people different kinds of attraction are totally separate spectra.) In other words, for me bits of people that give other folx the vapors are just where different limbs connect, and I get very confused about the idea of not saying "I love you" until further into a Relationship (I'm using the capital letter to differentiate the amatonormative meaning of dating, not because it's more important) because I can only experience interest in a Relationship with extremely specific people I already love deeply. I'm in my mid-30s, I can count my lifetime crushes on one hand, and I've dated two people—I'm married to the second.
That said, the number of people I have absolutely adored with all my heart is much larger. And for a number of them I absolutely agonized over what I was feeling. English really doesn't have a strong vocabulary for describing a variety of types of attraction or relationships, and the late 20th century white American culture I come from lacks a variety of frameworks to describe them.
So… while I was in denial about my feelings for my now-wife for years because I didn't think it was the right time and I didn't think she'd reciprocate them, I didn't struggle to fundamentally understand what they were. I loved her, in a way that opened the doors to wishing for a Relationship with her.
The number of times throughout the game that they very specifically talk about Urianger struggling to understand his feelings toward Moenbryda resonated with me in a really specific way. It certainly seems that at least some of the writers intended him to have latent romantic feelings, but the difficulty understanding the nature of what he felt reminds me of something else. While recognizing and describing romantic love was relatively straightforward for me, I have absolutely spent ages agonizing over the nature of my feelings toward people toward whom I have felt qpr (see: “The Struggle to Explain Relationships That Transcend 'Best Friendship' But Aren't Romantic....” by Jasmine Rose-Olesco)
In an amatonormative society like mine and possibly like Eorzea where, culturally, on a rough linear scale of closeness you're friends, you're best friends, you're romantically linked, you get married, you're family, there's not an easily accessible way to describe feelings like this person means everything to me. We are so close, not like siblings, but like…I don't know? It feels different from friendship, and it's not romantic… but I want to share my life with them. The [Ace] Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) was founded in 2001 and I wasn't aware of it until about 6 years later. Only in the last decade has the ace spectrum been more widely discussed in the mainstream and broader relationship vocabulary in general become more widespread. (People in qprs can have any orientation.) Growing up without language to help unpack these feelings, I struggled with them, ricocheting all over the amatonormative spectrum of vocabulary. I would very much relate to Urianger having qpr feelings for Moen and his studious little brain, like mine, failing to find good examples for how to describe or understand them. Agonizing over it for a decade makes perfect sense—been there/done that myself. The struggle is real! His relationship with Thancred does read romantic to me (those romcom camera angles tho!) and there’s a lot of really deep and satisfying emotionality to explore introducing romantic love to an aspec heart experienced in qpr love. There’s a lot that is shared, and some that is different. They’re both deep.
One of the things that ultimately I love about ff (even as it drives me a little crazy) is that very few relationships—straight or not, romantic, platonic, etc—are explicitly defined. In the game, love is love is love, and with the Scions the deep platonic relationships are given the same weight and taken as seriously as the (possibly) romantic ones. You don't often see platonic relationships valued on the same level as romantic ones in media. It's…. refreshing. :3
“Whatever happened to that thing with your wife?”
“When I came home, there was a man in my house!”
“You must have ears like an eagle.”
“You need your strength.”
“You never give up, [name], do you? You never give up!”
Next Major Life Change 🐛 September 2023 - Cancer
What It Is: Distant Thunder ⚡️, Narrow Pathway 🤏, 2 Pentacles, The Moon, Strength
Your reading is more like a warning, probably one you can see coming. Distant Thunder shows the desire to bring a Tower down yourself, and you have one here showing things outside of your control, as well as intense Mars energy. You want action. You’re not happy with the way things have turned out. In the preshuffle I saw the desire to leave a job for a new one, and the back and forth “should I stay or should I go?” question playing over and over in your mind. 2 Pentacles mirrors that, and you keep holding on to where you are, because you can’t see what else is out there. Your plans didn’t pan out, you’re frustrated, even bitter about it, and you long to “prove a point” to someone or act in a way that is all-or-nothing. Which is where Narrow Pathway comes in. 4 Cups shows you not being happy with anything available to you, and you have the desire to act out of character in the name of winning at all costs. But it’s unlikely you will. Not with that method anyway. It’s just like…shooting yourself in the foot, and still not being happy with your options.
Why It’s Happening: The Devil, King of Cups, Ace of Cups rev
Because you’re stuck, trapped to a situation you don’t want to be in, you feel no passion or desire for, and it’s going nowhere you want it to go. But you keep that to yourself, staying put in this 4 Cups apathetic, discontent, bored & restless state of mind. You crave victory, recognition, success, a promotion, someeething, but you’ve already waited a long time (you feel anyway), and nothing has come that you’d hoped for or expected. Simply in it for the money, because you don’t have a choice. You’re kinda all or nothing though, which is an issue being pointed out. You wait and wait and wait for something to come to you, and when it doesn’t, it’s like ACT RIGHT NOW, impulsively, destructively, but no. You’re being advised against that. You’re becoming impatient yes, but no one else even has a clue, and you’re more likely to be denied or resisted by suddenly coming at 1000 when you’re normally at a 10.
Advice: 5 Cups, The Chariot, The Tower
This shows to properly mourn what hasn’t worked out, because that’s the real reason you feel upset. Something you didn’t want to end, ended, and you didn’t have any choice in the matter, things were outside of your control. This may have been a dream job, an opportunity to get there, something you were really happy with. You’re heavily focused on this thing, and because of that, you’re not paying attention to all of the other things that could be as good. Or better. Rejection is redirection, no one is winning over you, or getting there faster than you, you’re just being directed elsewhere, trust that. Everyone has different paths, dreams, situations, karma and timelines. Comparison is moot.
The actual advice with Distant Thunder is to start clearing out everything in your life that is not useful, used at all, dreams/ideas/beliefs and even people you’ve grown out of. You’re at the beginning of a change that feels BIG, eventually, but it’s the beginning…even if you feel like it’s already been forever. In some ways though, you’re waking up for the first time. Or second, third, etc. This clearing out can start with old junk you hold on to, old clothes with holes, old music you’ve played and overplayed - or that takes you to a time & place that doesn’t suit you anymore, it makes you feel like shit or reminds you of old things that need to be released. Get rid of people that aren’t for you. Support is everything 💜
Page of Swords matches Narrow Pathway in its advice. Communicate how you feel with those involved or affected by your decisions, maybe even your job if you’ve never flat out said “I’m looking to move up in the company”, maybe say that. You never know. Don’t act impulsively, that is repeated many times, because you could dig yourself a bigger hole than one you’re trying to climb out of now - that’s the warning of the reading. You feel the desire to change, but so far have only waited for something to fall into your lap. It’s not going to, but you can seek it out, step by step. It won’t show up immediately, Spirit seems to want to test your patience in this way for a reason. Shadow work. Shedding old skins.
But if you keep looking, keep on top of things, check jobs every day, communicate to others who support you and could help, you will eventually find what feels right to you to shift into - and it will suit this new (current) version of you in a more comfortable and authentic way. You have to be patient with the process. It’s not just a job that’s changing here, it seems like just the catalyst for a much bigger change. You’re so discontent because you’re the one that’s changing, or has, but nothing around you is matching what the inside of you wants, or is becoming. Don’t point fingers outside of yourself, it’s you. You’ve outgrown a lot in your life, so keep your eyes sharp for new opportunities, consciously release what’s unnecessary, and take your time with the new, try it on & be sure it fits comfortably first.
TGI Friday’s Endless Apps Review
Tumblr media
If you’re a fan of enjoying savory appetizers in a fun environment, what could be better than Endless Apps at TGI Friday’s? “Endless Apps” refers to limitless appetizers, and TGI Friday’s has a vast range of tasty appetizers that you can either enjoy before your meal or in place of a meal. The franchise has offered this deal for a limited time on more than one occasion, and it’s a welcomed addition to the menu – as most endless, bottomless, unlimited deals would be. While your tastebuds are warming up, let’s dig into this TGI Friday’s Endless Apps Review.
History and Inspiration
Crave-worthy appetizers have been a part of TGI Fridays since the beginning. The franchise introduced the Endless Apps deal for “people who don’t like to see a good time end.” You can pick out one appetizer, then another, then another until your heart and tummy are content. With this deal, customers can order unlimited refills. It was launched in 2019 for a limited time, but the deal was so popular that TGI Friday’s announced that the deal has made a comeback, and this time, it’s here to stay.
Types of TGI Friday’s Endless Apps
Unfortunately, not all of the appetizers listed in TGI Friday’s menu aren’t available in the Endless Apps deal. Only a few selected appetizers from the actual menu and a few other added items are available. These include the following: Mozzarella Sticks Boneless Buffalo Wings Loaded potato skins BBQ chicken flatbread Pan-seared potstickers Green bean fries Sesame Chicken strips Meatballs  Fried pickles TGI Friday’s Endless Apps Review Can’t decide which appetizer to choose? That’s the beauty of this deal – you can order more than one item. You’ll likely be allowed only to order one item at a time, but that gives you enough time to decide your ordering strategy. Do you order the newer items first and work your way backward to the classics? Do you order alphabetically? Do you opt for a more adventurous approach? Close your eyes and point at the menu. As the deal suggests, the possibilities are endless.
Tumblr media
1.      Taste and Texture The Endless Apps are all delicious- I know, I’ve tried each of them. They’re all rich in flavor and packed with savory ingredients, mostly fried and saucy. My only complaint would be that every once in a while, something tastes like it’s been sitting in the kitchen too long, or it was re-heated. I’ve noticed this more with the loaded potato skins- almost as if they’ve been re-cooked or overcooked. I can overlook this as long as they’re loaded with cheese, bacon, and sour cream, which they are, but in a case such as this, my next order would be something less “heavy” and dense. The buffalo wings are always a great choice- the chicken is juicy and tender, and each piece is drenched in sauce. The Sesame Jack Chicken Strips are also on my list of favorites. Golden brown chicken breast strips are coated with crispy Japanese panko breadcrumbs and toasted sesame seeds, then tossed in their famous Jack Daniel’s sauce. I love this sauce with its sweet, barbeque flavors. Overall, I’d say you can’t go wrong with any of the choices. 2. Are they healthy? Ordering the Endless Apps is like a party for your tastebuds, and like most parties, the food is delicious and non-nutritious. Most of the items are full of carbs, calories, and sodium. For example, the Boneless Buffalo Wings soaked in the sauce has 1,190 calories and 4,450 mg of sodium. You might think the crispy Green Bean Fries would be a better choice, but those come with 900 calories and 1,720 mg of sodium. The Fried Pickles only have 110 calories, but be careful if you start dipping them in rich sauces. If you’re looking for healthy, you might skip the appetizers altogether and go for a Cobb Salad (also savory and filling). 3. Are they Worth it? Some restaurants only offer their special deals on certain days or during specific hours. However, TGI Friday’s offers its Endless Apps all day, every day, even though it was previously only available from 9 PM to closing. Now you can pop in any time to get this deal, so it’s like Happy Hour every hour, every day. The options are some of my top favorites, my kids and friends enjoy them, and the price is unbeatable. This is a fantastic deal, and it’s definitely worth it.
Tumblr media
Photo by TGI Fridays   Final Verdict For just $10, you can have endless refills and a wide array of choices, which makes this an incredible deal. The fact that you can order it any time any day makes it even sweeter. Paired with a $5 cocktail during Happy Hour, and you’re set.
What Does Elderly Wandering At Night Mean?
Seven (Se7en)
1995 - 2h7m - Rated R
Directed by David Fincher
Written by Andrew Kevin Walker
If you’re a fan of crime movies or just Brad Pitt, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Seven. If you haven’t…It’s currently available on that streaming service we all share with our families.
Directed by David Fincher, this dark drama truly set the tone for not only more incredible Fincher films, but the crime genre as a whole. After a somewhat rocky directing debut with the third Alien installment, David Fincher’s sophomore film Seven helped to set him apart from similar directors at the time. I wish I could have seen this movie when it premiered in 1995; I’m sure there were fans like me that were anxious to see what he would work on next.
Cinematography is an important part of any memorable film and Seven is no exception. Especially as of late, people are always discussing the “vibe” of a movie they’ve recently seen. This vibe is created by the Director of Photography, also know as the Cinematographer. The DOP for Seven was Darius Khondji, who also worked on beautifully shot films such as Midnight in Paris and Uncut Gems. I have no doubt that this movie jump started Fincher’s love of poorly-lit rooms and consistently rainy doorways. It showcases many artistic choices that continue to reappear in his later films. I dig it.
The screenplay is written by Andrew Kevin Walker who’s writing credit include the Burton/Depp Sleepy Hollow and Jason Segel’s modern day chamber film Windfall on Netflix. I think Seven starts a bit slow, but in my experience, that’s how Walker works. He takes the time to introduce characters and establish the world they live in. The writing isn’t flawless. In my own critical review, I rated this category 3/5. It’s important to let the audience figure things out, but lay the context clues to fully understand the story. This movie does that well. And the fact that the writing allows for viewers to “pick up the pieces” means you’ll be pausing it to explain to your parents or discussing it with coworkers the next day. The only downside for me was the use of an overpowering score paired with the panning view of the newest crime scene. It is ominous, sure, but almost distracting at times. With new tv shows and all-star films emerging everyday (some with equally awkward music choices) most detective movies can seem trite. But I think Seven’s style of storytelling through dialogue is intriguing and put simply, it works. It probably wouldn’t work as well as it does with just any actors. If you’re not a fan of either actor in this starring duo, why are you even interested in reading this far?
Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are cast as recently promoted “rookie” detective Mills and close-to-retirement officer Somerset, respectively. The conversations between them are written in such a way that they become the glue that holds the story together. If you’re not listening to the back-and-forth of this team, it’s all too easy to miss critical plot details. Detective Mill's wife, Tracey is played by a young and pretty Gwyneth Paltrow, though unfortunately, that’s the only way she seems to be portrayed. Though it’s probably intentional, her time on screen always seems to be cut short. Kevin Spacey (in what some might say was his prime) is our intelligent yet terrifying antagonist, John Doe. He doesn’t talk much either, but delivers an unforgettable performance. (He won the MTV Movie award for Best Villian in 1996.) Both these characters are important to the film’s story, but somehow, I still find myself wanting to know more about them. You’re sure to recognize a few other faces in the background of these scenes, as well. The casting only strengthens the authenticity of the world Fincher builds. Even though at times you may find yourself checking your watch, when the film’s concluding few minutes come around, you’ll be hooked until credits roll.
So, is Seven worth a couple hours of your time? Yes. It was one of the first of its kind and has aged rather gracefully. Sure, there are other films with similar plots, but the building blocks of dark, edgy crime dramas are visible here. I love that about it and any true movie fan would, too.
