shocked and appalled and intrigued and delighted to hear that you hate my number one good time gal faith lehane. i have so many questions!!! actually it's more like one question and it's just "???????????"
I would love to know why she doesn't work for you as a character (if you ever want to go into it, but no pressure!)
ALWAYS ASK FOR MY BUFFY THOUGHTS! I am legitimately thrilled to go into everything about this show.
And I want it to be clear - I think she’s an exceptionally well written character and Eliza Dushku was so good in the role. She just doesn’t work *for me*.
I’m going to start in the middle - the moment when Faith confronts Buffy at Sunnydale U and says, “You gutted me, Blondie”, it embodies the type of bully I hate more than any other. The type who will, in this case, try desperately to kill you and end the world while also trying to kill your friends and boyfriend, and then see themselves as the victim and you as the aggressor if you fight back. The kind of bully who will use any aggression against them - in this case, getting stabbed in the gut after months of violence directed toward the scoobs - to be even more violent.
Faith is a victim, 💯, of her mother, of probably any number of people before she became a slayer; and I don’t want to discount that. I have a lot of sympathy for Faith, and think she was not cared for in the way she deserved. The Watcher’s Council failed her, the adults who knew her in Sunnydale failed her, and the system continually failed her. Joyce was willing to sacrifice her for Buffy to have a normal life, and no one seemed perturbed she was living in a crappy motel - let alone questioning where she was getting money for things like food and clothes and rent. And I understand that breeding resentment and creating a nihilistic person. I understand abuse begets abuse, and that Faith lashes out at Buffy because she sees this girl getting everything - having *everything* - that Faith feels like she deserves. That Faith *actually* does deserve. Faith deserves a warm home and parents who care and lunches and dinners. She deserves a watcher who has her back. She deserves all of these things.
But when she goes after Buffy, when she talks to Buffy about how everything Buffy has should be hers, when she steals Buffy’s body (which I see as a metaphorical rape) and then sleeps with Riley in Buffy’s body (which I see as actual rapes of both Buffy and Riley), when she makes Buffy the subject and target of her ire, I hate it and I hate her. When she sexually assaults Xander as she works on killing him, I hate it and I hate her. When she rages at Buffy for stealing her life when she was trying to end the world, I hate it and I hate her. Because these are good people; these are also kids; and these people aren’t and shouldn’t be her targets.
And I hate it when she comes back in season 7, because the show doesn’t allow her the space to reintegrate into the gang, after everything. It’s partially the way her arc resolves in season 1 of Angel, where it and Faith coming to terms with what she did is separate from the majority of her violence (torture of Wesley notwithstanding). If she had remained on Angel the Series, I think I could have grown to tolerate her, because that show and those characters interacted with her during the season 1 arc and the season 4 arc. But the story the writers were telling on BtVS necessitates Faith’s presence, because it affects her as well. She deserved to be part of the discussion and the resolution about the slayer line. But the writers also had her talk about stealing Buffy’s body like it was ultimately fine, and had the line, “There's only supposed to be one. Maybe that's why you and I can never get along. We're not supposed to exist together.” Which, for me, sums up the thing I dislike most about Faith, even post-turn toward the good side arc. She is myopic. It’s not that they couldn’t get along - it’s that she wouldn’t let them get along. There isn’t a force in the Buffyverse that gets in Faith’s way when it comes to her relationship with Buffy other than Faith herself. And I hate that I think that line is supposed to be funny, because it just drags Faith back toward still being that bully who can’t handle it when someone fights back. And I want her to work beyond that, and be someone who can see and empathize with other people’s experiences. And, for me, we don’t get there.
I used to describe Faith as a Tennessee Williams character, and I hate Tennessee Williams. And I think that’s still true. I don’t enjoy nihilism. I think there’s value to Faith in the story they told. I think there’s a reason she’s here. I just don’t enjoy the journey, or the resolution.

Are there any triggers that anyone in the Pale Household have? Like with fpk I imagine that you can't use an aggressive voice with him. And if there are any triggers, what would be their initial response? I imagine that Hornet would simply shut down and barely react at all.
as i'm writing this, it turned out quite long, so i'll put it under a read more
i'll start with fpk cause he's probably the most prone to being triggered. aggressive tone is definitely one of his triggers, especially if it's paired with audible disappointment. he's terrified of failing others, so he's very sensitive to any sign that he's done something wrong. screaming at him only makes this worse. another big one for him is being referred to as "your highness" or any similar phrase, or just anyone calling him "the pale king" to his face (or in his presence). ruling over the mortals was a mistake in his eyes, he was not prepared for it and it ended up causing everyone pain and suffering. his biggest failure is not being able to save it from the infection, and his response was to reject his title altogether. he knows he doesn't deserve it, he feels shame and wants nothing to do with it. and of course, there is anything that has to do with the vessels. he still sees himself as a monster for what he's done, and anyone mentioning that to him is enough to cause him to break down.
as for his response, he's definitely the type to show very obvious signs of distress - heavy breathing, shaking, and then stuttering and crying. very often, he clenches his fists so hard he ends up hurting himself with his claws. if the situation continues, he cowers in fear just as if he was cornered, and eventually stops responding altogether. although he tends to stay away from others whenever that happens, being comforted is the best way to calm him down
---
you wouldn't expect grimm to have any triggers, but he's unfortunately not free from that burden. his biggest fear is losing fpk again, and the fact that unlike him, fpk can still die from illness or injury, makes him extremely paranoid. so for example, not being able to find fpk anywhere and having no idea where he is (even if it's something as simple as fpk leaving on a hunting trip) can cause him to become distressed, as he immediately assumes the worst. fpk being sick can also have a similar effect. but aside from that, things that remind him of his banishment can also trigger him. he tends to avoid other gods as they all inevitably bring up the fact that he's in exile
whenever it happens, he shut downs at first. you can hardly tell from his expression that he's in distress, but his mind is anything but relaxed. if you look closely, you may notice that he tends to clench his fists. if it doesn't stop and he's not able to retreat to a secluded place, he tends to react in anger. it's very easy to tick him off in that state, and it's not uncommon for him to respond violently, particularly if it's related to his second trigger
---
hornet's triggers mainly involve the memory of her father disappearing. she's very sensitive to any sounds or images that remind her of it. for that reason, she tends to avoid the palace grounds, and even the ancient basin altogether. during the time she was alone, any question about her family would often trigger her, especially those related to her father. similarly, seeing his face in statues or king's idols would have a similar effect on her. these days, the latter doesn't hold as much power over her as she does have a family again, but it was unfortunately replaced by a similar fear to grimm's - that she might lose them, and be left alone all over again. so just like grimm, she reacts very negatively to any sudden disappearance or lack of response from them
and similarly to grimm, she tends to shut down whenever she encounters a triggering situation. but unlike him, and which is surprising considering her usual angry demeanor, she never reacts with anger. if the situation gets worse, she simply shuts down even further, to the point where she completely stops responding
---
as you'd expect for holly, anything related to the infection and the radiance is very triggering to them. in their case, they're particularly sensitive to the smell and taste of the infection, and often react negatively whenever anything reminds them of it. aside from that, they are scared of disappointing their father, so any sign of disapproval from him can have a triggering effect on them. and lastly, their initial response to the news of a new child was a lot more negative than they'd like to admit, at their lowest point they felt so jealous over their father that they considered getting rid of the egg. of course, they would never actually do it, but they're still deeply ashamed of those intrusive thoughts. they tend to avoid lewk and react in stress whenever he gets hurt, as they're terrified of accidentally hurting him
their response to being triggered is very hard to detect from the outside, but they tend to shut down and avoid others. one of the only ways of telling that they're in distress is by looking at their shell - the void becomes more unstable, making it seem like the shell is "melting"
---
zote's triggers are all related to his childhood and the fear of being rejected. he reacts very negatively to being bullied, and any reminder of his parents and original home cause him stress. but with his mask and delusions, it's often very hard to actually see that he's triggered. to any stranger, it's not too different from his usual behavior, but as the time goes and he spends more time with the family, the moments of vulnerability become more common, and with them, the signs of distress are more noticeable
if something does trigger him, he immediately reacts with anger, and that's usually how it remains. in rare moments, he does occasionally end up crying, which he's deeply ashamed of

On Saturday I hung out with my 84-year-old ecologist great uncle and he stopped in mid-conversation (abt the return of the whooping crane) and very seriously told me that "you can go one of two ways, as a naturalist"; either you keep sight of the hopeful possibilities, or you don't. I'm one of nature's wretched little pessimists but when an old ecologist literally holds your hands in his and tells you, "don't despair," you have to try, I feel.

Best affinity combo for countering each pure affinity
(Without using that affinity)
Nature (plants & blight damage) - Materium + Chaos; Materium + Shadow
- Materium: Summons & non-racial units have high blight resistance & poison immunity; Steel Skin transformation gives racial units increased blight resistance; tomes of Transmutation and the Crucible provide fire damage spells & enchantments
- Chaos: Fire damage; lesser magma spirit has +4 blight resistance
- Shadow: all units except living fog have blight resistance (undead have +2, lesser frost spirit & frost spirit have +4) & poison immunity; Soul Fire deals fire damage; Tome of Necromancy can deal blight damage & prevent healing
- NOTES: I’ve paired Shadows w/ Materium instead of Chaos b/c I think that, in terms of fighting Nature, Shadows is just a worse version of Materium.
- [ ] 6 out of 9 of Shadow’s non-racial units have +2 blight resistance, and 2 of the other 3 have +4? 7 of Materium’s 8 have +6, and wind ragers still have +4.
- [ ] Shadows can give racial units +2 blight resist using Wightborn? So can Materium with Steel Skin (both spells are even unlocked at the same tome level)
- [ ] Shadows can deal fire damage using Soul Fire? That is a tier II spell whose damage is split with frost (which plants have no bonus or penalty for), while Materium has a tier V & VII spell that both do pure fire, as well as another combat spell, a world spell and an enchantment that all do at least partial fire damage
- [ ] Shadows can do blight damage with Rotting Explosion? That’s still only a tier III spell, that damage is still split w/ frost, and plants only have -2 blight resist compared to their -4 fire resist
So I think Materium + Chaos is pretty much strictly better than Shadow + Chaos. Shadow + Materium, however, I think has merit.
- [ ] While not having Chaos does reduce your ability to do fire damage, you still have the Tome of the Crucible for late-game fire damage, as well as Melt Armour from Transmutation, while Soul Fire does allow you to do some fire damage early on
- [ ] Wightborn and Steel Skin stack, allowing you to get your racial units’ blight resistance up to +4, as well as making them immune to poison
- [ ] Given that Nature has a lot of healing abilities, the Tome of Necromancy providing the ability to inflict decaying to prevent healing is probably useful
- NOTES:
- frost & magma spirits are elementals, and so benefit from Materium’s Eternal Earth enchantment.
- Nature has no pure origin cultures, but does have two mixed ones: Feudal (Nature/Order) and Barbarian (Nature/Chaos)
- [ ] Feudal: provides some spirit damage, so Materium/Chaos may be preferable over Materium/Shadow, as Wightborn gives your racial units -4 spirit resist. However, as this damage is limited to the Feudal support unit, it is unlikely to have a significant effect
- [ ] Barbarian: as the Barbarian culture uses blight damage, it should be covered by the broader Nature prep
- ISSUES: animals can provide pure Nature factions w/ damage & resistances of any type
Order (celestials & spirit damage) - Astral + Nature; Astral + Shadow
- Astral: most summoned units have spirit resistance
- Nature: lots of blight damage; nymphs & horned gods have spirit resistance; can inflict decaying to interfere with Order healing abilities
- ISSUES: shrine of smiting does mixed fire/spirit damage
- Shadow: Tome of Cryomancy provides frost damage spells & units (white witch & tier I frost spirits); Tome of the Cold Dark allows direct summoning of tier III frost spirits; living fog has spirit resistance; can inflict decaying to interfere with Order healing abilities
- ISSUES: shrine of smiting does mixed fire/spirit damage; decaying requires Tome of Necromancy
- AVOID UNDEAD as they have reduced spirit resistance
Materium (elementals & physical damage) - Astral + Order
- Astral: copper, iron & gold golems have reduced resistance to lightning damage; Steel Skin reduces lightning resistance
- Order: lesser stone spirits, stone spirits, gargoyles & earth titans have reduced spirit resistance
- ISSUES: wind ragers have increased lightning resistance & normal spirit resistance; Astral units tend to have low physical resistance
Astral (ethereals & lightning damage) - Materium + Nature
- Materium: primarily physical damage (most Astral units trade defence for resistance); wind ragers have lightning resistance; Goldtouched increases resistance
- PRIORISE: Tomes of Rock and Terramancy (physical damage spells); Tome of Wind (wind rager) Tome of the Golden Realm (Goldtouched)
- AVOID: copper, iron & gold golems (reduced lightning resistance); Steel Skin (reduced lightning resistance); fire damage spells & enchantments from the Tomes of Transmutation and Crucible
- Nature: plants have increased lightning resistance; Astral provides no bonuses specifically to blight resistance; Leafskin gives +1 resistance; Summon Greater Animal can summon thunderbirds (lightning damage & resistance) (25% chance when used in snow/ice/arctic terrain); Tomes of Beasts and Vigour can buff thunderbirds and stormscale serpents (lightning damage & resistance) (obtained from certain ancient wonders)
- AVOID: nymphs & horned gods (-2 lightning resistance instead of +2)
- NOTE: due to Astral having higher resistance than defence it might not be worth taking Poison Blades or Poison Arrows for blight damage, as they reduce physical damage
- ISSUES:
- both Mystic culture and the Tome of Astral Convergence provide pure Astral factions ways to do mixed lightning/fire/ice damage. wind ragers have reduced ice resistance and plants have reduced fire resistance. however, given the prevalence of lightning damage in Astral, it’s probably still worth using these units.
- the Mirror Shields enchantment reflects 50% of non-physical damage done to Astral shield & polearm units. This may be a problem if we are using blight damage, as plants have reduced resistance to it
Chaos (fiends & fire damage) - Materium + Order
- Materium: bonus defence; lesser stone spirits, gargoyles, stone spirits & earth titans have +4 fire resistance
- AVOID: fire damage spells & enchantments from the Tomes of Transmutation and Crucible
- Order: spirit damage; Tome of Sanctuary can reduce & remove negative status effects, reducing the effect of Tome of Pandemonium
- NOTES:
- [ ] Tome of Warding (Astral) & Tome of Cryomancy (Shadows) are both useful, providing fire resistance and bolstered resistance & frost damage, respectively. However, those bonuses aren’t really present in other tomes for those affinities, or in the case of Shadow, frost damage in other tomes is tied to units weak to fire damage
- [ ] Chaos has no pure origins, instead it has a mixed one: Barbarian. Barbarian culture does not do fire damage, but instead blight. Barbarian support units do blight damage, but Barbarian culture also has the primal strike ability, giving their units +8 blight damage on their first melee attack of a battle. This is enough blight damage for me to feel like it affects things, and originally I was concerned because Order celestials are weak to blight. However, the Order tomes you would want to take for this are Zeal, Inquisition and Supremacy for spirit damage, and Sanctury to prevent/remove status effect, none of which provide celestial units. Additionally, all non-racial Materium units have high blight resistance, so you’d already be pretty effective against it.
Shadow (undead & ice damage) - Astral + Materium; Astral + Chaos; Astral + Order
- Astral: Magical Wards gives frost resistance; banshees & living fog have -4 lightning resistance;
- Materium: Tomes of Transmutation and Crucible give fire damage (good against undead & frost spirits)
- AVOID: wind rager (-frost resistance)
- Chaos: fire damage (good against undead & frost spirits); moral gain from Tome of Revelry can be used to counter moral loss from Tome of the Doomknight
- AVOID: fiend units (-4 frost resistance)
- Order; spirit damage; several morale gain spells & abilities for countering moral loss from Tome of the Doomknight
- NOTES: spirit damage is less effective than fire damage against lesser frost spirits, frost spirits, banshees and living fog
- AVOID: celestial unit, Angelize (-4 frost resist)

Let us no longer hold ill feelings in our hearts. The crown cannot stand strong if the House of the Dragon remains divided. Set aside your grievances, if not for the sake of the crown... then for the sake of this old man who loves you all so dearly.
AKA Viserys just wanting his family to stop fighting and be happy and getting that as his last wish, if only for a little while.
