2023 Board Candidates

We have taken time to go over the bios and platforms presented by the current candidates, and will here present our thoughts for each on how we feel they align with our campaign's goals at this stage. We are particularly concerned with how willing and capable we feel they would be in helping the OTW meet its commitment towards developing anti-racist policies and practices.

We encourage everyone to read the platforms for themselves, and we look forward to getting to know each candidate more during the question-and-answer period. 

Anh P.

Gave no pronouns, the bio uses they/them.

Anh P. identifies the OTW's lack of transparency as a direct symptom of its current structure and human resource management not being up to the task of managing its 900+ volunteers, but does not offer solutions in their platform at this time. Their main focus seems to be reaching out towards new fans, particularly in non-English-language fandoms, for which their international, non-Anglo background and perspective are well-suited. However, they do not specifically acknowledge racism as a distinct problem nor do they indicate that they would prioritize anti-racist goals. They do not mention the Terms of Service (TOS), Policy and Abuse Committee (PAC), or their position on a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) consultant, nor do they state a position on using funds towards hiring anyone for that position. 

Audrey R.

Gave no pronouns, the bio uses she/her.

Audrey R. has experience within the organization and has a background in policy and nonprofit work, which could translate well to the Board. The work she has done has been on the Strategic Planning committee, which has worked at a particularly slow pace (6 years for implementation of the strategic plan), which she acknowledges “does little to address immediate needs.” Her stated primary reason for running is to protect fandom from AI which, while admirable and important, is not our focus – and to that end, she does not mention racism or harassment at all. She expresses willingness to have paid employees and calls for a conflict resolution management system for volunteers.

Jennifer H.

Pronouns: she/they.

Jennifer H. specifically addresses the importance of communication with the OTW’s user base. She also speaks to the need for complete structural reform. Her platform indicates an experienced perspective on what she can accomplish as a Board member and a willingness to do the hard work to make things better. We find their platform promising in that they are directly addressing issues we have raised, show these issues to be a priority, and express an understanding of the difficulty of the road ahead, but a willingness to do the hard work anyway. She seems to have a bit less experience working for the org, having only joined in 2022, but that is not necessarily a point against them. 

Kathryn S.

Gave no pronouns, the bio uses she/her.

Kathryn S. has experience in non-profit work and community activism, implementing DEI efforts and Human Resources (HR) experience which seem to make her a good fit for the Board and realizing our goals. She explicitly prioritizes the hiring of a DEI consultant along with an HR position. She does mention “recent controversies” in her platform, though she does not specify which ones. Her experience with the OTW is significant, at 9 years. 

Qiao C.

Pronouns: she/her.

Qiao C also brings an international fandom perspective and focuses primarily on the importance of communication inside and outside the organization. She makes a very brief mention of updating the TOS. She does indicate she would like to hire an HR professional, but her platform – while it mentions the recent protests and spends time discussing diversity issues – makes no explicit mention of racial issues outside bringing in more diverse volunteers. We do feel that more diverse voices within the OTW are important, though diversity alone is not going to solve the issue of racist harassment currently allowed in the OTW’s policies and enforcement practices. There is nothing else in her platform that speaks to dealing with racist harassment, updates to the TOS, or hiring a DEI consultant. 

Zixin Z.

Gave no pronouns but the bio uses she/her.

Zixin Z would also bring an international presence to the board. She mentions the need for structural change, paid positions, and increased documentation to prevent the loss of institutional knowledge. She also mentions the need for outreach towards non-English-speaking fans and has a desire to provide support to volunteers from minority groups. She does not mention racism, racist harassment, or hiring a DEI consultant in her platform, so outside the outreach and support she mentions, there is not enough for us to conclude that these would be priorities for her.

Jujutsu Kaisen and Assassin's Creed crossover! What would be each assassin's curse technique? What's their domain expansion? What grade are they?

I was half-tempted to make them Cursed Spirit just for the heck of it but let’s go for them being sorcerers in general. For this one, I’ll try to make their cursed techniques and domain expansion kinda like a reference to their games… Imma try anyway XD

So let’s talk about a brief description of each for those unfamiliar with Jujutsu Kaizen:

Cursed Technique: In a nutshell, sorcerers uses cursed energy to activate their techniques and that’s why it’s called Cursed Technique.

Domain Expansion: I am probably going to screw up the explanation but the main point is a Domain Expansion is a closed ‘space’ created from the mind of the user (usually a reflection of their mind) that guarantees to amplify their curse techniques (or evolve it or mutate it) and give it a 100% hit rate. Not every sorcerer can use a Domain Expansion and it’s noted as a sign that a sorcerer has reached the top of their capability (allegedly).

Grade: Each sorcerer has a Grade that shows their ‘capabilities’ and experience with 4 being the lowest (weak or inexperienced or your family is a pile of trash dicks who is keeping you from promoting), 3 is average, 2 is above average, 1 is the highest status… unless you count Special Grade which is reserved for those who are super dangerous, mostly those with immeasurable destructive power

(Since some curse techniques are hereditary, a bit of backstory would be necessary)

Note: All Cursed Techniques/Domain Expansion names are subject to change because I am bad at naming stuff and they were all translated by Cambridge Dictionary so if it’s wrong, blame them. Also, their Grades is not their final grade but their grade when the ‘story’ starts. In this situation, I kinda like the idea of Altaïr, Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton being the upperclassmen to Arno, Jacob and Evie. XD

Altaïr: semi-Grade 2, barred from promotion by the Sinan Family’s Elders

The adopted child of the Sinan Family who is rumored to have killed his adoptive father, Rashid, and is said to be under investigation, barring him from promotion until further notice.

Cursed Technique: Hollow Illusions

Altaïr is able to create illusions that cannot be distinguished from reality. It cannot physically harm his opponents but real objects may be hidden in the illusions (ex: hiding a time bomb in an illusion of a person his opponent loves). He can create illusions of anything he knows and have seen and his illusions can even copy living beings down to their quirks and habits using the knowledge his opponent has about them (it’s unsure how but Altaïr believes that his cursed technique doesn’t really create illusions but infects anyone with the ‘thought’ of that illusion and invades their mind for more information). He mostly uses this to confuse or debilitate enemies while using his sword to finish them. Hollow Illusions cost a lot of energy and Altaïr can only use up to 5 average human male size illusions per day… unless he pushes himself but this comes at the cost of harming his internal organs.

Domain Expansion: مكتبة الإبداع [Library of Creation] (“Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted”)

A pure white dome with bookcases filled with books and parchments as walls. Each book and parchments correspond to the ‘laws of reality’. In this dome, Altaïr has complete control over every law that governs the universe and the living beings inside and anything that is created in this domain can be stated as ‘real’ and any ‘real’ thing in this domain can be stated as ‘illusion’ at his whim. (if Altaïr’s theory that his technique invades the mind directly then this domain’s real danger lies in Altaïr’s ability to invade anyone’s mind and change it to his will… of course, that theory has not yet been proven).

Ezio: semi-Grade 2, Auditore Family

The second oldest son of the Auditore Family, an old sorcerer family that has been one of the most influential families in their world.

Cursed Technique: Auditore Family’s Light Absorption

Ezio can use his cursed technique to absorb any source of light, amplifying his cursed energy. He uses his amplified cursed energy to coat his weapons and deal massive damage. (He can even absorb the light of a phone’s screen, it does not need to be natural light)

Domain Expansion: Teatro della Tenebre [Theatre of Darkness] (“We work in the dark to serve the light”)

His domain absorbs all sources of light inside the domain, engulfing everything into darkness. Being hit by a spotlight means being engulfed in a pillar of pure cursed energy meant to deal severe damage (ala Moonbeam) if it hits anything other than Ezio. Being hit by the spotlight amplifies all of Ezio’s attacks and acts as a shield that negates all incoming damage. The domain is also able to absorb the light outside of it, ensuring that Ezio will have unlimited energy in the domain.

Ratonhnhaké:ton: semi-Grade 2

The illegitimate son of the missing Haytham Kenway, part of the Kenway family, a branch family of the Auditore family. He strives to become a sorcerer to find the Cursed Spirit who burned his village to the ground and killed his mother.

Cursed Technique: Auditore Family’s Light Absorption

Inherited from his ‘missing’ father, Haytham Kenway, Ratonhnhaké:ton absorbs light to amplify his own body, making him faster, stronger and more durable.

Domain Expansion: I can’t find any English to the Kanien'kehá:ka language translator but just assume his Domain Expansion’s name is from his native language and it translate to “The Night Hunt” (“We work in the dark to serve the light”)

His domain is engulfed in darkness and Ratonhnhaké:ton stalks his preys in the darkness, the amplification of his body shrouding him in cursed energy that seemed to take the form of different animals. Like Ezio (and anyone with a domain expansion from the Auditore family), he can absorb more light to amplify his cursed energy from outside the domain.

Desmond: Ungraded → Grade 4 (debatably: Special Grade)

Of course, we’re going to shower Desmond with affection by making his life ‘complicated’. Desmond is born of the Miles family, a branch family of the Auditore family with William Miles, his father, as the current head of the family. He’s the cousin of both Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton (of differing degrees) and his birth is shrouded in mystery for one specific reason: no one knows who his mother is. His mother disappeared (or died???) when he was 3 in an incident that everyone is forbidden to talk about (all they know is that Desmond is the sole survivor) and investigations concluded that his mother’s identity never existed. He doesn’t want to be a sorcerer and he actually ran away from the Miles family… until he got into another incident where every being in a closed room with him is left dead in varying degree of gore while he slept in the middle of the room, exactly as it happened back when he lost his mother. Because of this, he’s been given to Edward Kenway to survey and, if necessary, put down.

Cursed Technique: Auditore Family’s Light Absorption – Incomplete(???)

He can absorb light, sure… but it doesn’t amplify his cursed energy at all. No one knows why. Desmond cannot even use cursed energy at all even though he can see cursed spirit. For some reason, Desmond can also absorb cursed energy itself. Edward theorizes that this is the ‘final’ form of the Auditore’s Light Absorption, to absorb cursed energy from others. But they still can’t understand why Desmond can’t use cursed energy when it’s clear that he can absorb it. Some believes this is because Desmond hasn’t mastered it while others believe it’s a drawback of being able to absorb cursed energy.

Domain Expansion: “None”

As far as everyone can see, Desmond does not have a Domain Expansion.

Edward: Grade 1, leader/teacher of Altaïr, Ezio, Ratonhnhaké:ton and Desmond’s team

The ex-head of the Kenway Family (the current head is his daughter, Jenny) who has turned to instructing students and is the current instructor of Altaïr, Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton. He was given Desmond because of his mastery of the Auditore Family’s Light Absorption as well as a personal favor from William Miles who was unwilling to take Desmond back (“He wouldn’t want to see me. It might just make him more uncooperative if I was to try and take him back to our family. He is safer with you than he would ever be with me.”)

Cursed Technique: Auditore Family’s Light Absorption

He absorbs light and can coat the cursed energy taken from that light in any object. His primary weapon is pistols (4 of them, in fact) and his bullets are all coated in cursed energy. He cannot create bullets made of cursed energy but his mastery over the Auditore Family’s cursed technique means he can coat anything (object, living person) with his cursed energy and can absorb light immediately. Desmond’s pistol and bullets coated with cursed energy is from him so Desmond could protect himself.

Domain Expansion: Raise the Black Flag (“We work in the dark to serve the light”)

The domain is filled with cursed energy showing as black water that Edward can use at any time but acts like acid to those inside his domain. Rotting planks acts as ‘safe ground’ to them and the domain’s walls turn into cannons made of darkness, firing blasts after blasts to all enemies in the domain.

Arno: Grade 3

The son of a veteran sorcerer who died from a cursed spirit (probably?) while on his way to get his son from the park where he was playing with a mysterious red-haired girl. He finds his father’s body and is taken in by the sorcerers soon after.

Cursed Technique: Des Sens Partagés (Shared Senses)

Arno can share senses to any target and it doesn’t have to be human. Those with cursed energy are easier to share senses with and Arno can choose to make it one-way or two-way. He uses it more for surveillance and reconnaissance, acting as a commanding officer in the field.

Domain Expansion: Sens en Bouteille (Bottled Senses) – still incomplete

He’s still working on it but his domain is meant for him and his opponents to share everything with Arno being able to choose how ‘deep’ their bond is. Arno can also take his opponents senses, debilitating them. As a last result, Arno can harm himself to harm his opponent.

Evie: Grade 3

Evie will be our Maki Zen’in, unable to see curses but still wishing to be a sorcerer. She’s considered a prodigy in her own regards and has both an inferior complex and an academic rivalry with Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad because people like to say “If she could just use cursed energy, she would have been as good as Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad”. The Frye family supports her and is even pushing for her to be named the heir, making them a ‘joke’ in the eyes of many other sorcerer families.

Cursed Technique and Domain Expansion: None

She uses cursed tools and is granted a more durable and faster body than even high leveled sorcerers by Heavenly Restriction. Arno usually shares his senses with her so she can see cursed spirits but she has tools to help her if Arno can’t share his senses. If she pushed herself, she can be as fast as Ratonhnhaké:ton in his domain. However, the prejudice and mocking she received as a child makes her have a hard time with mental-heavy cursed techniques like illusions.

Jacob: Grade 3

Evie Frye’s twin and a sorcerer who joined because it was ‘tradition’. He’s friendly and doesn’t seem to take anything seriously. Underneath, he believes it would have been better if he was the one that can’t see cursed energy instead of his twin. He also can’t help but think the Frye family’s support of Evie is a show of how much of a disappointment he is.

Cursed Technique: The Frye Family’s Emotional Manipulation

A cursed technique of the Frye family that can manipulate emotions of the targets, make them calm to the point of not wishing to fight or stop someone from killing them. Jacob can only target 1 target at once but the common target is usually 3. He’s still ‘learning’ the ropes as he calls it but many believes his lack of progress is either deliberate to make Evie a worthy successor or he is being hindered by his own hidden inferiority complex.

Domain Expansion: The Fall of Terror – incomplete

A domain in which Jacob can freely control the emotions of everything in it. The final form of this domain would have every being fall into complete terror, paralyzing them and, in some cases, making them harm themselves.

Bayek: Grade 1

The headmaster of the ‘school’ Desmond is sent to. He lost his son to a group of organized cursed spirits that they are still hunting down. His wife has gone missing, presumably turning rogue to hunt the same cursed spirits without waiting for the approval of the council.

Cursed Technique: Soul Fire

Bayek is able to use his cursed energy to create flames that have the same mythical properties people believe Greek Fire to have. His main weapon is a sword that is covered in his Soul Fire. This fire cannot be snuffed out for as long as Bayek has cursed energy and can melt through the toughest of metal and even the strongest barriers recorded by the sorcerers.

Domain Expansion: آكل القلوب (Eater of Hearts)

His domain is shown to be ruins with the ground submerged in water. His Soul Fire turns into a large glowing snake that attacks anything in the domain and Bayek trades his sword for a bow made of the same flames. His arrows are purely made of Soul Fire as well and he coordinates his attack with the flaming snake that hunts the domain.

Basim: Grade 2

A thief who accidentally got mixed up in all these because the one he was stealing from had an object that contained a cursed spirit. This cursed spirit killed its ‘owner’ and was about to kill Basim. It unfortunately ate his partner in crime and childhood friend Nehal. Preliminary report stated that there is no evidence of any other person at all and many believed that this Nehal has been completely devoured by the cursed spirit before Basim’s current instructor, Roshan, got to the scene and saved Basim from the same fate.

Cursed Technique: Focused Strikes

Basim marks his targets in a specific radius and teleports to each of their location to attack in rapid succession. Almost always lethal but takes a lot of cursed energy. He can only mark up to 3 targets right now but, with enough training, he will be able to mark up to 5 targets.

Domain Expansion: سجن الجن (Djinn Prison) - incomplete

A domain haunted by a djinn that attacks anything in the domain. The entire domain is surrounded by shadowy figures that stand still while the djinn stalks and attacks everyone. The djinn cannot be attacked or killed. Because of the incompleteness of the domain, the Djinn will also attack Basim if it sees him.

“A Reader’s Dream”

A domain expansion that creates hooded figures that kills everything in sight with a blade on their left arm. They can be killed with one shot but more will be summoned as time passes. Each figure wears a hood, keeping their faces obscured. The domain appears like a gray area shrouded in light mist and lines will start to form all over. The more glowing lines there is, the harder for anyone or anything in the domain to move. Each time this domain is activated, it seems to be larger, as if it had been receiving cursed energy from somewhere and had been storing it. The domain itself does not show its user.

I believed in the users once before | A system in disbelief

It’s so fascinating looking at legacy because basically in all of Flynn’s actions he has created the perfect situation to justify hatred and disbelief in the users.

Flynn did all the heavy work for Clu. There is no need to propagandize and lie when , in your view God has indeed abandoned you. He had taken a Polytheistic society that used to have more more individualized deities and inadvertently turned it Monotheistic. Between him constantly leaving and then going into hiding- to this society he truly has abandoned them. They have no other User input, requests, commands - he is it and he has left them.

As cycles go on belief wanes, this is a system that used to have direct and constant interactions with users and what they’re capable of and hasn’t in generations. Memory wanes, anger stews, distrust grows. And who comes in to pick up the pieces? Clu. He’s not making a single thing up, unlike most dictators he fully believes everything he spews and from a point of view… he’s right. (Again that’s terrifying).

Where the MCP had to forcefully capture and eliminate programs who still believed in the users (that he hadn’t assimilated or drained). Clu doesn’t. Belief was nearly stamped out organically!! In the grid it has truly become a cultish set of unwavering belief— unlike in Encom where it was a organic part of life stamped out by force. This is more “choosing to leave religion” if it’s comparative?

Those who fight in the games are strays- not regular programs but those broken or lost that are out just… wandering. Those are the ones that get tossed into the arena or rectified (from what we see in the movie) it’s not like the MCP. Clu doesn’t have to work so hard to get rid of belief because I cannot state enough, Flynn did all the heavy work himself.

In this grid the games are a purpose, horrific but using the infrastructure left behind by Flynn. Strays get the games — survival. Regular programs have something to do — watch.

There’s no mindcontrol in the crowd- their user hate and games enjoyment is a necessity if they want a society at all. If it is to believed— as Flynn himself stated Clu can’t create, he can repurpose. He’s the overseer! Not the creator. He’s doing what he can with what he has… he built Rome, which is not good (as sympathetic as I am towards Clu there’s like 12 other things you could’ve done before building Rome)

No one is a better example of Lost faith than Castor.

He’s fought for Flynn and his beloved ISOs , he was one of the best so much so he’s still sought after. He’s changed. “I believed but what did that do for me?” What did it get him but heartache and so many dead companions and at the end of it , after all this fighting Flynn disappears! His fall into self preservation and sour attitude towards users is completely understandable.

It’s sad that this has happened as the original film and novelization describe belief in the users as this intrinsic and natural thing all programs know to be true. And to have a situation where so many willingly abandon belief because there is no communication (‘user requests are what computers are for’) or purpose. That it had been made so easy for clu to turn that sorrow into a burning hatred. It is sad that this thing they all desire the most has basically been made into a cult sect who can’t let go of something that used to be so basic. Above all it’s just so fascinating that this all happened naturally supposed to by a regime, all Clu had to do was step up and acknowledge it.

In conclusion:

Now I’m not saying Flynn did any of this on purpose, he didn’t want to abandon anything, he didn’t want to create a system with no purpose. He was a excited young man who wanted to recreate something cool and was given the powers of a god. He didn’t know the impact even the smallest action could cause. He did not have bad intentions but oh boy did he fuck up.

I hope this makes even a lick of sense, I just have so many thoughts 😭

she has two brothers : i've posted a family hc before stating that she was an only child but I changed my mind — her behavior suggests that she has at least one sibling. i believe utahime to be the oldest of three. her brothers , takuto & setsuko , are twins : born 6 years after utahime . they're both annoying and love to irritate / tease their older sister. ( the origin of her short fuse. ) her brothers are both jujutsu sorcerers, however, while utahime and takuto specialize in providing support, setsuko has a more powerful and combat ready technique. takuto is able to use his technique ‘ lullaby ‘ in different ways depending on the song he sings, in general definition he’s able to destabilize curses, cursed users, and even sorcerers if needed. setsuku has a technique that’s more power focused , dubbing the name banshee, you can infer what he's capable of.

sweet things : it's common knowledge that utahime doesn't like sweets, while that's true i do see her liking more organic sweets that comes from fruit, therefore my portrayal of utahime includes her favorite dessert being a fruit cheesecake , favoring a tangy sweet rather than the intense sweet that most candies and sweets have.

celestia : growing up, utahime was extremely fascinated with the moon and stars, and even to this day she can point out the stars and constellations when she's given the chance to look up and observe the sky and she'll likely start to ramble on about which ones are where and it gets her a little more out of that polite and proper shell she has a lot of the time.

THREE THINGS YOUR CHARACTER LIKES TO DO IN THEIR FREE TIME :

karaoke . . . she loves to sing in general , often taking time through her day to aimlessly sing or hum, obviously she sings in the shower ( if she has music playing ) . she's always loved to sing, always had a knack for it, and with a voice as pretty as hers ? you'd want her to.

drink ! . . . there's not much else i can say, utahime likes to drink and it's how she unwinds after her stress induced days supervising and all, she prefers beer over anything else but that doesn't mean she won't drink anything else. her tolerance is dependent on what type of alcohol / liquor it is.

read . . . since she was able to, she's loved to read. usually she's perched somewhere, working through one of the many books she's bought and put aside for later ( work keeps her busy ). her favorite genres include romance and action , sometimes fantasy. not to mention the word puzzles she likes to do, crosswords, word searches, etc.

PEOPLE YOUR CHARACTER LIKES / LOVES :

shoko : her closest friend , a confidant, shoko is a constant in her life that she doesn't have to worry about watering herself down for ( not like she really does anyway but regardless ) , she's completely herself around shoko and catch up no matter how long it's been inbetween their visits. she really loves shoko, is perhaps overly protective of her ( all her friends ) and i can see utahime actually telling shoko anything whereas she may hold herself back from telling mei mei anything that could be compromising .

yuuka iori : her grandmother , a woman that's raw, she always says whats on her mind and doesn't hold anything in, she has a more rancid sense of humor ( she's one of the fun old people ) . but she's always been closer to her grandmother.

her scar : she didn’t have to take the mission, she was already training to become a teacher vs. staying a active sorcerer, because her strengths laid in her ability ot easily teach others, often tutoring when she was at tokyo. her scar was given to her thanks to the special grade curse that had originally presented as a grade 2. she regrets how confident she had been going into the fight, knowing what she knows now, that she almost died killing it, she would have been much more careful, maybe she wouldn't have taken it or at least had some backup. her scar taunted her for a while, eventually she had no choice but to deal with the fact that she'd forever have that reminder of her weakness.

goodbyes : utahime's father passed away shortly after her scar healed, it was a very intense time for her and she lives to regret never being able to say goodbye the way she wanted. he grew sick, but he's always had a stronger immune sysetem than the rest of the family, that being said, he died suddenly, on a rainy november morning. if she was given the chance, if she had known ! then she would have made sure he was aware of the love she had for him, the only girl surrounded by her brothers she was a daddy's girl, her dad's soft spot, and they had a bond to resemble that. her biggest regret is never telling her dather how much she loved him.

this barely even discusses the actual story because there’s so much setup. the sin eater au has very complicated lore for something which is mostly about everyone suffering a lot. i apologize in advance

this is a modern world with magic, but it’s not very powerful. the average person mostly interacts with it in the form of purchased physical objects. the average person is able to sense magic— for instance, walking up to an enchanted object, one can likely sense the power, the temperament, and the purpose of the enchantment. they can also tell some things about other people’s internal magic.

everyone has internal magic. if you don’t it is because you are dead. your internal magic is affected by a lot of things. sometimes your physical health but mostly mental nonsense*. it can get corrupted due to the aforementioned mental nonsense, which is a tiny bit unfun.

the vast majority of people cannot do anything with their internal magic. they have no way to access it in a conscious manner. a few people are able to consciously access their magic— “magic users”.. this is sort of but not totally genetic, but in any case you cannot become a magic user on purpose. you have it or you don’t.

having access to your internal magic is mostly not a good thing. there are very few Actual Magicians because trying to do anything notable with it means studying it as a discipline, which is like learning engineering and law at the same time while going to trade school on the weekends. if you don’t want to go to superhell college, you can practice a reasonable amount and then you can do silly little party tricks. which is cool and fun!

however.

a person’s body can only contain so much magic. if you are normal and don’t have any way to consciously access yours, your body handles it for you— you’ll gradually produce more if you lose it, you won’t end up with more magic than you’re supposed to have, everything will be chill and fine.

if you are a magic user, you are theoretically capable of decreasing your internal magic via performing spells, so your body decides not to be helpful. if you have somehow acquired too much magic, you gotta get rid of it on your own.

magic users can mess with the magic of non-users. you can give magic to someone or take it away from them.

again, normal people can’t use their own magic but can perceive the magic inside of objects or other organisms. some people can use magic, which may not be good for them. here’s a third category for you to remember: a small number of people are completely unable to perceive magic at all— they are “magicblind”. this is mostly not a problem.

being a magic user means that you have been chosen to act as the eater of sin for your community; this is, supposedly an honor. it is your duty to listen to the wrongdoings of your community members, to take their corrupted magic from them, and to keep it inside yourself literally forever. you are not allowed to say no.

john was eleven when he finally got caught shaking sparks from the ends of his fingers. he was twelve when he started taking sins. he was twelve, and the parents of his schoolmates were telling him about how they drink too much and they yell at their wife and they beat their children and they wish their spouse was dead, and he would take their hands and look them in the eyes and scoop out the rotten twisted bits of their magic and bury them inside himself as deeply as he could.

after a while it started to show no matter how much he tried to hide it. corrupted magic doesn’t smell, exactly, but it produces a similar sense of repulsion. his schoolmates began to look at him with disgust. their parents began to fear him. he moves his bedroom to the top floor of the house because his aura keeps his siblings from falling asleep. his mother doesn't touch him anymore.

it began to make him sick, eventually. it is a sickness that cannot be chased away, and one for which he gets no sympathy. it is a duty and it is an honor and he does as he is told. he is resigned to it. but it is a very lonely and painful path to walk. he cannot imagine anything else, but there is very little light left in his days. other than duty there is very little left to live for.

until the new foster kid with flyaway hair and ripped denim trousers sits next to him without seeming even to notice what he is.

Due to the fact there are many designs and that they have interchangeable parts, can a mech be outfitted with weapons? I know they have claws and a strong jaw (presumably) but can you strap a plasma rifle onto one? What about utilities like a lighter? Does that mech need training and a license for dangerous upgrades?

assuming the answer to 1 is yes, has there been any major wars or conflict?

Once again about interchangeable parts and different mech designs, are certain mechs designs suited for specific tasks? Can an operator choose the design before becoming a mech? How much freedom do they have?

More questions! 1) Only some parts are interchangeable - and outfitting can mean multiple things. Obviously nothing prevents a mech from holding a weapon with their hands, or physically strapping them onto limbs and holding triggers - I assume this isn't what you mean. When an operator is integrated, their neural I/O is mapped to their new Mech body, propagating nerve signals through the machine muscle that makes up most of a mech's body mass. It's possible to re-map neural bandwidth on demand, to add additional components, limbs, sensors, proxy capabilities or, as you mentioned, weapons. Initially, the mech may have to give up part of their sensory I/O or choose to sacrifice functionality to make room for additional parts, but over time, after initial operator integration, the integration systems themselves slowly seek deeper into the operator's organics, splitting even the finest of signals into smaller strands - as such, operators will often experience their base capacity for neural I/O expanding very gradually - and experienced mechs may not need to give up anything to fit an upgrade. Adding parts requires an Integration Module / INTEG. These are semi-uncommon upgrades that interface with a mech's nervous system by weaving directly into their machine muscle, and acting as an extension for compatible external systems to latch onto.

Trying to enforce which tech a mech decides to incorporate can be a complex affair, and in setting not many factions would consider it a worthwhile endeavor.

If you outwardly sport dangerous upgrades, chances are you won't be welcomed into civilized settlements.

2) The entire setting is post apocalyptic, with mechs being ancient techology, remaining after the fall of the empires of old, now studied and replicated - whichever conflict lead to the fall of previous civilizations, it was extremely comprehensive in its destruction.

Current civilization has existed for long enough to independently develop space travel, but with new powers emerging, new faction conflicts are brewing. I may get into these later, but I've identified at least a handful distinct groups at risk of entering lasting conflict with one another.

3) Certain mechs are better suited for certain tasks by design, and the frame of a mech largely defines its final shape and capabilities (prior to upgrades).

Mechs are mostly Found Technology and the understanding thereof is still being built.

There are generally two ways of becoming an operator - being integrated inside a mech equipped with operator conversion systems, and being integrated within a standalone conversion pod. There are reasons to integrate even if you don't have a mech, which I'll get into later (you could become a Virtual Dweller for instance).

It should be noted that an Operator is what the user becomes during integration. Many operators aren't even aware that they're separable from their Mech Body - if they were converted inside a mech equipped with conversion systems, they'd simply wake up as the mech upon completion.

If you find one and want to perform modifications on it prior to integration, you'd have to find a way haul it back to a workshop with all the necessary spare parts to make significant alterations, and hope it doesn't get stolen or damaged along the way. For this reason, it is often a take it or leave it kinda' deal.

I shall take this as an excuse to talk about my (many) well-beloved nuggets. This is gonna be a long post.

On the first loop of my first playthrough, I decided, on a fair Day 26, to take on Malkuth's "When Dusk Falls" mission. And, as luck would have it, the Dusk that arrived was a Green Dusk.

Of the fifteen in the facility at the time, only five survived. These would become known as the "Eternal Five," as they have been in my facility every single day since then, even across playthroughs.

Since then, several other nuggets have become nearly as renowned, but those will be discussed later. For now, let us speak of the nuggets who survived the Green Dusk of the first facility and have lived on since then.

Geomeuntugu

The very first nugget ever hired, Geomeuntugu has become the facility badass. Clad in his Mimicry EGO, his classic pipe, and the ever-present red flame around his head, he's the one who always gets involved when shit gets real.

Personality Headcanons: He sees himself as the most important member of the corporation, because let's face it, he is. He isn't afraid to let others help in suppressions, but he enjoys the thrill of stabbing abnos and destroying them.

Toki

A strong-willed nugget, Toki is sort of just a farmer who wandered into the facility one day. For a long time (way longer than necessary) she was clad in Harvest EGO, but has since been upgraded to Justitia in what can only be described as the makeover of the century.

Personality Headcanons: Toki doesn't take any shit from anyone, and is always willing to use her Adoration weapon to fling goo at people.

Odelie

A powerful user of Gold Rush, Odelie is adept at punching her problems away. Her Adoration EGO Armor makes her incredibly durable as well, perfect for close-ranged combat.

Personality Headcanons: Similarly strong-willed as Toki, but Odelie really enjoys violence and murder. Slamming her plated fist into an abnormality gives her a thrill not much else does. Really hates Geomeuntugu.

London

A rich kid, who was hired using all the LOB I had to be fast-tracked into the position of Central Command Captain. Everyone hates him, but when push comes to shove, he's capable of a lot due to his Sound of a Star set.

Personality Headcanons: He's a snobby rich asshole who everyone despises, but he secretly does look out for them. When things get tough, he's often the first to run and flee, often pleading for his life in the process. Despite being a scaredy-cat, he's willing to put his fear aside to protect his friends when it counts.

Sergey

Who?

Personality Headcanons: I often forget he even exists, let alone that he's one of the Eternal Five. The other members also frequently forget he exists, to the point that the corporation has considered having him added as an abnormality who causes anyone who isn't directly looking at him to forget he exists.

Now, that's all the stuff about the Eternal Five, but I have a few more I'd like to get into just because I love them.

Ashely

Often given the honorary title of "Eternal Sixth member," Ashely was originally created to be the friend of Laetitia. She's often seen wielding Laetitia's weapon, armor, and gift way past the time for upgrades, and she's known for getting very attached to the abnormalities.

Personality Headcanons: Ashely is just happy to be here, and loves to be given work to do. She's often unconcerned with the darker aspects of the corporation, and just wants to hang out with her co-workers and play with the cuter abnormalities. However, she sure knows how to fire a gun.

Sorin

The organization's insane person, Sorin is often assigned to work with CENSORED and Mountain of Smiling Bodies. He's so adept at these works that most think he must've already been insane before entering the company.

Personality Headcanons: Often says strange things and completely disregards social etiquette. Is frequently seen wearing MoSB's EGO Gift, scaring those around him in the process. Some people enjoy his company, but most steer clear, which he seems fine with.

Minsung

A generally dependable employee, who just does what's required with nothing extra. They frequently are seen on suppression teams, and in their free time, they hang out with Ashely a lot. They are also seen in the company of the Eternal Five rather frequently.

Personality Headcanons: Minsung doesn't put too much or too little effort into work. They do what's required, and similarly, they don't go out of their way to please people. But if assigned work, they'll do as much as they can to get it done in a timely fashion.

That's about it for the main ones. I do have others, but none as important as these eight, who I often just consider the "Lobcorp Eight."

The Glue Gunners had to think on ways to make their glue more effective on a normal life.

Top Path

The Bloons Solvers had to find another use for their corrosive glue in this new society.

Trash Solver - Some Bloon Solvers decided to use their corrosive gun to take the trash out of the city, becoming a very important job on this society.

Decease Solvers - Some Bloons Solvers decided to use their glue to help others get rid of cell deceases. They changed the glue, so they can activate its corrosiveness inside the body and targeting the cell.

A group of Bloon Solvers did not like this new society and didn't want to abandon their ways, so they continued to study a way to make their glue more corrosive. This group is considered terrorist for using public constructions and monkeys for their experiments.

Middle Path

The Glue Stormers were pretty okay. They weren't really focused on taking care of bloons, so they were able to change pretty quickly.

Arm Storm - These Glue Stormers decided to add more arms to their backpack. The amount one has is determined by the mental capabilities of the user. The highest amount of arms is 12 pairs.

Glue Sniper - This group of Glue Stormers sacrificed their arms to combine them in a pressure gun that can shot glue for miles.

One time, the Glue Gunners tried to make ships full of glue with pressure guns in it. They were able to do one, but it costed too much material for them to do more. They named this ship Glue Hurricane.

Bottom Path

The Super Glues decided to use their glue for different things.

Glue Cannon - Some Super Glues decided to make cannons that can shot the Super Glue. They usually use it to help constructions.

Super Stitching - These Super Glues decided to use their glue to help monkeys attach limbs back together, so they modified it a bit, so after the limb is completely regenerated, the glue will be absorbed by the organism and transformed in protein.

There are some giant Glue Cannons made to help in giant construction. They are comparable to mountains in size, but they aren't used in a long time.

SUMMARY (rough wip): Ainz finds himself wondering why he's doing things the hard way and decides to lean on a trusted subordinate for help. Thanks to this, Demiurge suddenly gets to see his god in a whole new light; he didn't think he was even capable of falling in love, but WHOOPS, there he goes!

CONTENT NOTES: Starts out as unrequited lust, to unrequited love, to fully requited. Probably counts as slow burn? Gonna get kinky, but I haven't decided HOW kinky. BDSM will be a thing. Power dynamics will be at play, too, but we're keeping this particular fic consensual and ETHICAL. This is a ROMANCE.

STATUS: Still a long ways to go… A lot of scenes and basic structure are outlined, and the first 2k words or so are totally done. But I don't yet know if this is going to turn into a 40k fic or a 100k monster…

Gonna just rattle off some of my general Dottore thoughts + headcanons here

THIS IS KINDA LONG LMAO I’M SO SORRY IN ADVANCE ENJOY MY FUCKIN... MADDENED RAMBLINGS IG??? This bitch has been living rent free in my fucking head for months now and I don’t know how to evict him

We haven't gotten confirmation either way on how the Segments work I don't think, so I'm headcanoning them as at least partially organic until further notice jgksdjgk

Also I know we got that shot of that weird THING where Dottore's eyes should be when his model got posted, but you can pry red-eyed Dottore from my cold dead hands !!!!

(I personally think they just fucking slapped some textures under there because we're not supposed to see what his eyes look like yet. Think Kaeya's eye under the patch)

The way I draw him, he does have scars around his eyes underneath his mask, though I've probably tweaked how they look about half a dozen times by now. I'll post him later probably

My idea with that oneshot I wrote is that, despite his best efforts not to, Dottore is still capable of feeling emotions. Beyond basic things such as anger though he is... Not very well in touch with them. He insists he doesn't feel guilt in disposing of the other Segments. (If anything he almost sounded happy abt it while talking to Nahida bc it sounds like they never shut the fuck up lmfao) It only starts to sink in that maybe he does have some regrets when he starts having those nightmares.

He had countless pairs of eyes to give himself different views of the world, and now he only has himself. But he keeps pushing onward and shoving it back down, because to accomplish his goals, no length is too far. Dottore is completely and utterly ruthless, I think we all know this by now.

That also lends credence to how he could end up playable as well. I personally see him eventually getting a Cryo Vision, as (iirc) it's been shown that basically every Cryo user we've gotten so far has gotten theirs due to family conflict. And when you think about it, what he did to the Segments could be interpreted as him effectively killing his brethren or maybe some kind of extremely convoluted suicide WHDFHDSF it could honestly go either way

It's still too early to say on the Vision front tho lmfao it'll likely be a good year before he's playable

Moving back onto the Segments for a moment, the reason he gives in-game for creating them is... A lot more understandable than I expected. Giving himself multiple views of the world and effectively stopping time for that version of himself. The lengths he goes to in pursuit of knowledge are genuinely fucking impressive, and also go to show how utterly unhinged he is.

I saw this on Twitter first, but Dottore is extremely focused on preserving the past. Even outside of the Segments, there's lore in artifact descriptions and the like that point back to him as well, and though he keeps it under tight wraps, his conversation with Nahida gives a lot more insight into his mindset + who he is as a person than at first glance.

He says it himself: Humans have a hard time making peace with themselves. Wouldn't that also imply things like the passage of time? Growing older, and one's own mortality?

There's a lot of potential with his character, and I think that's part of why I love him so much. He's just so fucking fascinating to me. Like. I know I haven't done RP shit in a long ass time (definitely FAR less than I used to), but Dottore is the closest thing I've had to a muse in years. Getting into his head is so unbelievably fucking fun for me

6 Hours Ago… Victor had returned to the underground castle to further examine it. Sure the rest of the group managed to get the church restored with some help, but he needed to see if there was anything down there that could help him in the long run, especially if he was going to succeed with the Enlightenment. He enters the castle library, looking through each book to see if there was anything that he could have that could help or make a good backup plan if things go bad early. After 2 hours of searching, he was about to give up, until he saw a rather peculiar book. The one armed old man notices how dusty it is, so he has his stand blow off the dust. Then he places the book down on the table and reads whatever may be inside it. Then… he saw drawings and descriptions of all kinds of creatures. Creatures that looked a lot like,,,

“Stands. The ower of this place was a stand user.” He stays, as he looks through the book, seeing stands of a mechanical nature, of organic nature, etc. It explains a lot about how this guy got the castle to move from place to place too. He continues to skim through the book, until something at the end catches his eye. A silhouette of a person with horns, and what appears to be butterfly wings. All the other stands in the book only looked vaguely humanoid, with a few exceptions, but all were completely detailed. This one was a huge contrast. So, he decides to read.

“Sadbu Ttrue; An unholy union between human and spirit. A cursed enity that terrorized this small part of Japan for years with its ability to bring nightmares to life. Never in all of my travels have I seen a creature this tragic, yet so malevolent. I couldn’t let it continue to tormenting others, so I did what I could and sealed it away with the help of its other, Pian Oman.” Pian Oman? Victor treads back a few pages and notices sees that name and the drawing of the stand itself. It had the body of the man, the features of a wolf, and long silver hair.  “Pian Oman; A spirit capable of trapping anything inside of special rainbow colored crystals in a suspended form of animation. If the crystal, or Dimenstone, is broken then anything that was inside of it gets released.” Victor smirks upon reading that last part. So now he had a base for a backup if the cult plan fails. All that’s left is to head back to the church.

Trio of smaller satellites to continue NASA/USGS's Landsat legacy With a trio of smaller satellites that can each detect 26 wavelengths of light and thermal energy, the Landsat Next mission is expected to look very different from its predecessors that have been observing Earth for 50 years. This new plan for Landsat Next, a joint mission of NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), is designed to provide more frequent, and finer resolution, data of the changing surface of Earth. "I think this is going to be a phenomenally capable instrument, with the biggest leap in Landsat capability since Landsat 4," said Bruce Cook, NASA Landsat Next Project Scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "This is basically the first chance we've had to completely re-conceive the Landsat mission." The Landsat series of satellites has provided a continuous record of Earth's surface from space since 1972, allowing researchers and resource managers to track changes in the natural and human-influenced environment. Landsat Next, planned to launch by late-2030, will extend this record while providing more frequent observations, higher resolution images, and more than twice the spectral bands as its predecessors. Earlier this month, NASA officials approved Key Decision Point-A authorization for the mission. Landsat 9, which launched in September 2021, is a single spacecraft that collects data of Earth's landscapes and coastlines every 16 days. Its sister satellite Landsat 8 is also in orbit, and together they gather images of any given spot on Earth's surface every eight days. NASA and USGS envision a Landsat Next constellation of three spacecraft, orbiting in a configuration that would provide finer spatial resolution and expanded spectral imaging capabilities every six days at the equator. When combined with Landsat 9, heritage Landsat image data would be provided at even higher temporal frequencies, Cook said. These more frequent observations are especially important for tracking fast-changing processes like water quality, crop health, and natural hazards. Landsat Next will also gather higher-resolution, more detailed images of Earth's surface. Pixels from Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 are 98 feet (30 meters) wide, about the size of a baseball infield, in most wavelengths. For most Landsat Next wavelengths, pixel size will be 33 to 66 ft (10 to 20 m) wide, about the width and length of a tennis court. The three spacecrafts that make up Landsat Next will be identical, each carrying an instrument or instruments that detect 26 wavelengths spanning the visible to shortwave infrared and thermal infrared regions. This is more than double the spectral bands of Landsat 9, and is designed to allow data users to glean even more information, Cook said. New spectral bands were added to Landsat Next in response to evolving science and user needs. For example, new visible bands will help scientists and resource managers manage water quality by identifying chlorophyll or dissolved organic material in the water, as well as harmful algal blooms. Red edge and shortwave bands will help identify stress in forests or croplands. New near infrared and shortwave bands will provide information about snow and ice surface states, water content and freeze-thaw dynamics in a changing climate. Landsat heritage spectral bands have also been refined. For example, Landsat's SWIR2 band was subdivided into three bands to advance agricultural management and the impact of crop residues on soil fertility, crop productivity, and carbon sequestration. Landsat Next will also increase the number of thermal infrared bands from two to five, which will provide measures of surface emissivity, improve estimates of surface temperature, and help with mapping minerals. "One of the things that we've really focused on in the Landsat Next project is listening to the user community," said Chris Crawford, USGS Landsat Next Project Scientist and Co-Lead of the Landsat Science Team. "At the same time, we're still coming back to data continuity as a guiding observational principle and guaranteeing that no matter what future Landsat missions look like, they maintain continuity and compatibility with the prior historical record. Because that's really the strong, unique attribute of Landsat: 50 years of measurements that we hope to carry into the next 50 years."
