#this is a throwback to civil war

This Day in History: Fort Sumter
On this day in 1861, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard sends a demand to Union Major Robert Anderson: Surrender Fort Sumter! But how had matters come to such a point? At that point in time, the Civil War still had not really started.
States had been seceding, of course. South Carolina was the first to make this move in December 1860. By April, seven states had separated from the Union, forming their own government. The Confederate States of America immediately got to work seizing federal forts, arsenals and customs houses located in the South.
If the Confederacy was an independent nation, then it could not have another government’s offices on its property.
The focus soon turned to one particular fort in South Carolina: Fort Sumter.

Throwback Thursday - Favorite Books from High School Years - Month of June - 3rd of 5 books #throwbackthursday #favoritebooks
For #ThrowbackThursday during the month of June, I will share my favorite books from my high school years. This was way back in the days when there wasn’t kindergarten for country kids (me), elementary school was 1st through 6th grades, junior high was 7th through 9th grades, and high school was 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. I’m not including books that were ‘typical’ high school required reading.…

My Hero Academia Time Travel Swap Fic
Post Canon Yagi and Top Hero Deku abruptly swap in place and time with Pre Canon young Izuku and All-Might (Even after the war and cleanup and government overthrow quieted down, quirks never really stopped getting unreasonably, inconveniently powerful).
Yagi Toshinori laughed, full bodied, uproarious, and far too hard; Izuku had a clean red square of cloth in hand even before weathered fingers could finish reaching for the cafe’s flimsier napkins. The cloth changed hands smoothly, alongside a well worn set of sheepish grins.
With only a brief pause for a searching look, the young man continued on with his story; Yagi smiled and wiped the blood away, letting the wide hand-motions and emphatic expressions wash over him. Try though they both did, it was rare enough that they could steal enough time for lunch together.
Already Yagi’s gaze caught on a young woman approaching nervously - he glanced away, no malice detected - perhaps an autograph seeker  (though more likely someone seeking help, which could only mean the end to a pleasant lunch and another amusing anecdote of young Shoto’s unfortunate tendency to find himself facing the worst quirk match ups). Something drew his eyes back to the girl.
Old instincts or old paranoia? Izuku followed his eyes, but turned without much haste, clearly Danger Sense wasn’t activating so it was probably—
— A bright flash of light and a twisting sensation — ...probably fine. Well. He wasn’t coughing up blood, so that’s good. He’s staring at a vaguely familiar villain who looked just as surprised to see him. Maybe more so. Deku was nowhere in sight.
Yagi straightened, barely wobbling.
(‘I’m standing up, cafe’s gone—no I’m on a different street—differentcity—teleportation? mental trap? Vivid for a hallucination but depending on the quirk I might not notice errors...fellow with horns in front of me is clearly dangerous..but too confused to do anything for the next few seconds...My, he looks more out of sorts than I am...’)
“The fuck?” the unnamed villain breathed out, stopped in place (‘hm not frozen or paralyzed - just a non-quirked state of bewilderment’—better figure this out sooner rather than later’). The vaguely rhino-like figure was standing far too long in an exaggerated fighting stance; “You — I didn’t — what —”
(‘Didn’t I fight a rhino-themed villain who looked like him, hm, a few decades ago? Son getting revenge? But the plan went awry somehow — Great Lakes his outfit’s a pre-civil war throwback isn’t it — wait, what am *I* wearing — my clothes haven’t sagged this badly since—no, not just clothing this is—’)
“All Might?” the man asked, incredulous.
“You’re...asking if I’m All Might,” replied possibly the most recognizable old man on the planet, speaking slowly, eyes clocking ((too slow, far too slow)the slack jawed news crew behind an overturned car, the murmuring passersby slowly turning into an audience, in a careless way they hadn’t since before—’)
“I mean—he was—you are standing where he was standing, and wearing his costume,” the Rhino replied, defensively puffing out his chest ‘(The Rhino, that was his name—looks like he’s getting over the shock, shit’}.
“And you do sort of look like him, if he suddenly had all his blood and muscles pulled out of his body and his hair gel removed and — are you like his dad? Or did you get hit by a quirk or something?”
The tone was gradually growing arrogant; out of the corner of his eye, Yagi spotted a look in the Reporter’s eyes, a look he associate almost solely with reporters — fear slowly being edged out by unholy glee at a big, destructive, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The crowds’ whispering picked up. The Rhino straightened all the way into a proper loom, a sneer crumpling thick skin.
All Might smiled back.
The sneer flickered, clearly unnerved. Even Izuku, his dear boy, had to admit - his smile was a bit unnerving, if you weren’t used to it. Especially when he made a point to show the All Might Classic Full Mouth Of Teeth out of his unarguably (well, Izuku did argue that one, and so do quite a few others—) skull prominent face.
All Might raised a finger and ever so carefully stood tall, vertebrae cracking loudly in the sudden hush. At 7 foot,3 inches, he tended to rival all but the largest of mutation quirks, and the Rhino paused on the backfoot, uncertain. Yagi’s muscles already strained, ruefully missing his walking stick.
“Hold that thought, I’ll answer in just a moment”
Making a snap decision — ‘either this is in my head, in which case I need time to figure out the parameters to escape, or its not, and i need back-up quickly to not get flattened by a C-rank villian’
He turned, still smiling widely, to the reporter, who’s eyes went wide at the attention.
“Excuse me,” Yagi called out, voice echoing over the rubble of a battleground just barely broken-in.
“Hello over there—” He let the grin soften for the camera, (it has to be live, if this isn’t live wer’e all dead). It was still probably...a lot, for this time-period un-acclimated to more banged-up heroes, but a few fewer teeth were showing now at least.
“—I think I may have been hit by a quirk; would you mind telling me what year it is?”

For the tomdaya historians amongst us the December 2015 breakup date of Tom and Elle makes sense because he stopped liking her posts on early November. And she didn't attend the Civil War London premiere in April. Tom was working a lot outside the UK, so I think the problem was the long distance. He stopped following her on May 2016 before he left London to shoot HOCO after she posted a throwback pic of the 2 of them
Yea, I know most of us have theorized over the years that Tom and Elle broke up some time possibly before April 2016, coz as you said, she wasn't at the "Capt America: Civil War" premiere.
But yea, I wouldn't be surprised if they did break up on Dec 2015.... esp if she said "first love".

Log term biological shifts created by the Morbius Presidency as well as the long term political impact of the same era.
Biological/Political shifts during the Morbius era
First of all, Morbius' era is so annoyingly contradictory in terms of when it happened, that pinning down specific biological and political shifts is very hard. The timelines and alternative realities are a complete mess, and, of course, the inherent unreliability of historical accounts within a society full of time travel makes it difficult to state anything with any modicum of certainty to begin with.
What we do know is that Morbius railed against Gallifrey's non-interference policy that culminated in a civil war, which would've left a huge mark on biology and the politics of Gallifrey. Here are some vague over-arching theories that may or may not be accurate.
🧬 Long-term Biological Shifts
The Morbius era probably encouraged advancements in Gallifreyan biotechnology and warfare capabilities, like any good war does.
Enhanced Regeneration Techniques: The civil war might have led to more advanced regeneration techniques, ensuring quicker recovery/healing and possibly even influencing the physiological adaptability of Time Lords in future generations.
Psychological Resilience: The mental toll could have pushed for a biological evolution towards greater psychological resilience, possibly affecting their telepathic abilities and mental defences.
🏛️ Long-term Political Impact
Morbius's Presidency challenged Gallifrey's non-interference policy but would have also exposed the vulnerabilities in Gallifreyan society.
Strengthening of Non-Interference Policy: Following the failed coup, there might have been an effort to reinforce the non-interference policy, embedding it more deeply into the cultural and legal fabric of Gallifreyan society to prevent future renegades from attempting power grabs.
Military and Defense Reforms: The civil war would have highlighted weaknesses in Gallifrey's military and defence strategies, leading to reforms.
Political Polarisation: Morbius's radical policies and the subsequent civil war would've no doubt deepened political divisions on Gallifrey, influencing future generations.
Hope that helped! 😃

Thank you so much for that reading, CC. I know it was difficult for you. My money is on KC3 continuing to give financial support/favors to Harry behind the scenes. I also suspect William does not approve of KC3 trying to please Camilla by showering her with money/influence either. I think the problem has always been KC3. QE2 and William had the right idea of what the Monarchy should be and how a monarch should behave. KC3 unfortunately seems to be a throwback to the old days of corrupt monarchs.
Hi Nonny,
My money is on it being something to do with the Sussexes as well. I am planning to do another reading later this week to see if I can get more information on that 10 of Swords in reverse card.
Like you, I do not see Charles as being of the same mould as QE2 and Prince William. He does remind me of the more indolent kings in the past, those who lavished favours on their mistresses and who were not really concerned about the welfare of their people. King Charles 1 comes to mind. Charles 1 believed in the divine right of kings, and under his reign England had civil war and he (Charles 1) ended up being executed. Charles III should take note (Charles III also apparently believes in the divine right of kings, like his predecessor).

Throwback Thursday
Tumblr media
I drew Josiah Walls, So today I'll be talking about the poll tax in Florida (a place with so many alligators and crocodiles sweet Jesu-). So by the end of the Civil War, African Americans made up nearly half of the population of Florida. As in other Southern states, most Black people in Florida before the Civil War were enslaved people and none had the right to vote...the passage of the 15th Amendment in 1870 extended the right to vote to all citizens regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. A closer evaluation of the 15th Amendment indicates that it states the right to vote cannot be denied because of race. Which they should've followed but they outright IGNORED it...and as a result other methods of voter suppression, such as poll taxes and literacy tests, were used to get around the wording of the amendment and effectively disenfranchise African Americans in the election process. Florida was the first ex-Confederate state to use the Poll Tax as an effective barrier to prevent Black people from voting.White lawmakers in Florida had a strategic reason to fear newly empowered African American voters at the end of the Civil War. Black people made up about 45% of Florida’s population and thousands of white residents had lost their right to vote because of their Confederate ties. By 1867, there were 15,434 Black voters registered in Florida and just 11,148 who were white.Soon after the Civil War, there was an explosion in the number of Black voters (male only) and Black elected officials. Nineteen Blacks were elected to the 76-member Florida Legislature in 1870. During this election, Josiah Walls, a former slave, and Union soldier from Alachua County became Florida’s first Black member of Congress. Walls would be the only Black member of Congress from Florida for the next 116 years! In 1889, Florida’s Legislature adopted a $2 annual poll tax as a requirement for voting. On the surface, there was nothing discriminatory about the tax. Both whites and Blacks had to pay it. In reality, the legislators knew that the $2 tax (which is $74 today now) would affect Black people more because they were overwhelmingly poor. Although some poor whites were also disenfranchised, they could often find ways to circumvent the tax. Political candidates for example, often paid the cost to entice white voters to support them. Election officials frequently “overlooked” the tax for whites without legally coming into conflict with the 15th Amendment.Florida officially abolished the poll tax on June 14 in 1941. This was due to so many candidates trying to buy votes by paying the tax. U.S. Sen. Spessard Holland of Florida would be one of the leaders pushing to abolish the tax in federal elections. In 1964, the 24th Amendment was adopted abolishing the poll tax in all federal elections. It would take the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, however before the majority of African Americans in Florida could register to vote. Wow... Florida lawmakers were actually afraid of black people would have equal human rights as they should and that they would get involved in politics if they wanted to and potentially win...and they knew that black people were half of the Florida's population.

Tears of the Kingdom so far:
They're getting really generous with their throwbacks. You thought recognizing all those names on the BOTW map was a trip? Naw, fam - they brought back Like-Likes, they brought back Floormasters. And we know they've got ReDeads, and we know about Gleeock. Maybe my dream/nightmare will come true and we'll run into Dead Hand again. Anything is possible; this game is in fact rated T.
Sky islands felt very much - "BOTW, but make it Skyward Sword."
Down on the surface, it's very much "BOTW, But Extra!" In the same way that "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was "A New Hope But LOUDER".
I can't tell how much time has passed since BOTW. They're being very ambigous about it, but it's been a couple of years for sure.
Love that Purah is taller than Link now.
What is it with this franchise and it's love for ancient civilizations suddenly becoming relevant again? It started in Twilight Princess and now it's basically a setting trope.
I got REALLY excited when the mummy said "Rauru" because I was sure it was a direct call back to OoT, but nope, we've got a goat man instead.
Although now I will laugh and laugh at my ESP, and my ponderings of the Zonai not being some version of Hylian. (I'm a little sour about the Sheikah being classified as another Hylian tribe though, instead of their own race, but I'm just nitpicking.)
I was also right that all the 'Ancient Sheikah wonders' tropes from BOTW are now "Ancient Zonai wonders" tropes.
And I bet dollars to doughnuts that Zelda is currently being controlled by some entity or we're not actually seeing Zelda, because she's acting too out of character. My guess is she's in another time period, based on the Recall sound effect that played when Link turned over the busted Master Sword.

More about Soldier Boy from GQ Interview.
Which means the big question in season three is something a lot of us are contemplating right now: When a would-be tyrant is finally toppled, what fills the power vacuum they leave behind? What if the venom that person injected into society has already sunk in so deep that there’s no sucking it out again? What can we do?
A popular answer on both sides of the real world political spectrum these days is looking for inspiration from an idealized, imaginary past. As conservative politicians try to drag everyone back to an America where white Christian men get to decide what’s right for everybody, liberal politicians fall back on ineffectual appeals to a bygone era of civility, decorum, and reaching across the aisle.
The show’s newest superhero, Soldier Boy, is an explicit throwback to the fantasy of an idealized past—a beloved, humble American hero who killed dozens of German soldiers in World War II, then refused the honor of his own national holiday, insisting the date should be used to honor all superheroes instead. (He also wears a combat helmet and fights with a shield, so yes, he’s The Boys’ Captain America.)
You will not be shocked to hear that the truth about Soldier Boy is a little more complicated than the official story. Believed dead for decades, he returns to a world he doesn’t recognize. For Captain America, being unfrozen meant catching up on stuff like Steve Jobs and Star Trek. For Soldier Boy, it means balking when he sees an openly gay couple walking down the street.
Eric Kripke didn’t need to look far for his Soldier Boy: Jensen Ackles was just finishing his 15-season run on Supernatural, the first TV series Kripke created. “He said, ‘I know that there are some actors that the studio and network and producers have in mind, but I'd be willing to go to bat with you if you want to do that’," Ackles recalls. “And I was like, ‘How big of a bat do you need?’”
Anchoring *Supernatural—*a TV show that premiered in the early days of George W. Bush’s second term—has taken up much of Ackles’ acting career, but he’s still managed to dip into more conventional superhero fare, squaring off against a young Clark Kent in Smallville and voicing Batman himself in last year’s two-part animated film Batman: The Long Halloween. (“Especially the Batman thing—that’s such a heavily painted lane,” he says. “You don't want to reinvent that too much.”) Even this funhouse-mirror version of Captain America wasn’t much of a stretch: “I've known Chris Evans for a million years, back when he and I were fighting for the same roles,” says Ackles.
But more than anything, Ackles was ready to show Supernatural fans what he could do on an Eric Kripke show that isn't bound by traditional TV's standards and practices: "I don't want to be a one-trick pony," he says. "I think I've got something else up my sleeve." Once unleashed onto the modern world, his Soldier Boy feels less like a superhero than a warning: Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.
(...)
But like so much of The Boys, this ultra-dark worldview turned out to be uncannily well-timed. “Kripke is a fortune teller,” says Ackles. “He has some weird Kryptonian crystal ball in his office, and he's like, This is what the cultural landscape's going to look like a year from now, and he writes to it. I don't know how he does it.”
Trump was defeated, but he’s gathering strength for another presidential run, and we’re all stuck with what he unleashed—and there’s no sign that it’s going anywhere, or that the Democrats in power have serious plans to do anything about it. And maybe that’s been the real message of The Boys all along—the one that makes it stand apart from all the other superhero stories out there right now: No one is coming to save us, so we’d better figure out how to save ourselves.

Was gonna make a post about how it's kinda weird that everyone just accepts that Scooby-Doo Zombie Island takes place almost entirely on a Civil War Plantation, but then I remembered that Witch's Ghost takes place in Salem which is also a site of racism based atrocities that the movie itself almost addresses with Sarah Ravencroft, except they made her white and actually a witch making the colonists correct in trapping her. All while not really dealing with the fact that most witch hunts were a combination of misogyny and racism, as well as the racism implicit in a "colonial town" throwback

Pathfinder 1E - Feral Archetypes
Tumblr media
Art by Pathfinder artist Will O'Brien I'm diving back into Pathfinder again for more monstrous character flavour. Rather than races and traits, this time I'm looking at class archetypes that have a wild/feral feel to them (mostly Druid and Barbarian) I found all of these on the Archives of Nethys, which is a great resource for Pathfinder content, so consider supporting them if you find their stuff useful! Archetypes in Pathfinder 1E work differently to D&D. Instead of every character getting one at an early level, they're optional, and you swap out of some of the core class abilities for the archetype versions.
Feral Gnasher (Barbarian; goblin-only)
Feral gnashers grow up in the wild, either raised by animals or scraping by on their own, and soon learn to fend for themselves. These barbarians often utilize pieced-together armor and fight with their sharp teeth and whatever improvised weapons are within reach.
Alternate Abilities: Savage Bite, Lockjaw, Wicked Improvisation
Devolutionist (Druid)
Full of simmering hatred toward civilization and those who dwell within it, devolutionists believe that the world would be better off without any sentient life at all. They transform intelligent creatures and domesticated animals into throwbacks to their feral ancestors. Alternate Abilities: Undomesticate, Devolution I really like this one as a concept for a villain or an evil PC. This kind of insane Darwinism makes for a compelling bad-guy motivation. It's exactly the kind of insidious ideology Thrash is struggling against in his arc as a PC as well.
Flesheater (Barbarian)
A flesheater eats flesh to create a spiritual bond between herself and the consumed creature, allowing her to take on aspects of the creature that served as the meal. Alternate Abilities: One Flesh, Feast, Unbound Form
Pack Lord (Druid)
Some druids bond with many animal companions rather than just one, achieving a level of communion rare even in druidic circles and leading their pack brothers and pack sisters with total authority.
Alternate Abilities: Pack Bond, Improved Empathic Link
Mad Dog (Barbarian)
Though named for the wild savages who fight alongside rabid dogs, mad dogs employ all manner of beasts as their battle brethren.
Alternate Abilities: War Beast, Pack Tactics, Ferocious Fetch
River Rat (Rogue)
What highway robbers are to roads, river rats are to waterways. Skilled at hiding amid reeds and roots, these rogues strike the unwary from the shallows as others would from the shadows. Despite their strong association with banditry, river rats make excellent guides and hunters.
Alternate Abilities: Swamper, Rat's Resilience
Wild Rager (Barbarian)
Rages are barely controlled, but there are those who wholly give in to their more savage side, letting their rages take them to a confusing and uncontrolled place of terrible savagery. These barbarians become beasts, consumed with absolute bloodlust to the point where they cannot tell friend from foe.
Alternate Abilities: Uncontrolled Rage, Wild Fighting, Rage Conversion
Holy Beast (Shifter)
Thousands of gods are venerated in Vudra, and devoted followers might have personal relationships with their chosen deities. Holy beast shifters pledge to hunt down their deity’s enemies to earn that deity’s blessing. These shifters tend to take on the aspect of their deity’s sacred animal, and many of them seek to destroy rakshasas.
Alternate Abilities: Blessed Claws, Divine Fury
Feral Child (Druid; human-only)
Some youths, abandoned in the wilderness and then raised by animals, are so connected with their adoptive home and family that they become feral. Suspicious of civilized society, these foundlings often choose allegiance to the wild over their human forebears.
Alternate Abilities: Illiteracy, Beast Family, Native Cunning,
Rageshaper (Bloodrager)
All bloodragers blend the unpredictable surge of arcane power with the savage fury of battle lust. For most, their rage is a conduit for the eldritch power locked in their heritage, but for a rageshaper, the latent magical energies in his blood bring about physical transformations and facilitate the blending of arcana and aggression into a deadly synthesis that few other barbarians (or even other bloodragers) can match.
Alternate Abilities: Bestial Aspect, Furious Transformation
Wild Hunter (Ranger)
A wild hunter seeks to emulate the animals around him to keep him safe while he tracks his prey. Instead of studying the traits and behaviors of a favored enemy, a wild hunter studies those of various animals, incorporating those attributes into his hunting strategy.
Alternate Abilities: Animal Focus, Shared Focus
Mooncursed (Barbarian)
Some barbarians exhibit an unusual form of lycanthropy powered by their fury. Such a character transforms willfully but can maintain her animal or hybrid forms only while raging.
Alternate Abilities: Shifting Rage, Hybrid Rage
Weretouched (Shifter)
Weretouched shifters are scions of lycanthropic forces, whether hereditary or supernaturally imposed. They can assume both animal and hybrid forms, as a lycanthrope does.
Alternate Abilities: Lycanthropic Aspect, Lycanthropic Empathy, Lycanthropic Wild Shape

Reverse Robins: 32
Masterpost
Damian (15) and Duke (14) have progressed past their mutual murder attempts and work together as Batman’s partners, Signal and Shadow. By complete coincidence, the two have made a light-dark theme pairing out of their costumes, which they refuse to acknowledge whenever Mia (15) brings it up. In the years since Damian arrived in Gotham, the trio had also adopted Colin into their group, when they all teamed up behind Batman’s back to take down a children’s fighting ring. Colin rarely comes out as Abuse, instead trying to go back to a normal life, but he still hangs out with Duke, Mia, and Damian at Gotham Academy.
Ever since Talia dropped Damian off with him, Bruce has been hearing rumors about a civil war brewing within the League. He and Damian, while patrolling together, run into Cass (8), who is in the process of both being kidnapped and also kicking her kidnapper’s assess. Damian recognizes Cass’s style as League-trained, but Cass also recognizes Damian’s movements as League-trained and books it. She doesn’t leave Gotham though, and over the next few months she keeps showing up randomly, only when Batman is alone, and never really doing anything, just watching him and disappearing when he gets too close. At the same time, Bruce learns for sure that there is a Wholeass War Going On in the League, allegedly started by The One Who Is All deserting the League, causing followers of Ra’s al Ghul to turn on David Cain. Cain then started calling in favors and allies to fight against Ra’s, and within a year nearly the entire assassin community was embroiled in a conflict nobody was totally sure why they were fighting, WW1-style.
Bruce finally manages to start a pantomime communication with Cass, where he learns that she is running from someone dangerous, is yes-no scared of the dangerous person, and trusts him (Bruce) for some non-pantomimable reason. She eventually agrees to come back to the Cave with Bruce. Damian Loses His Mind when he realizes who Cass is, and together Damian, Bruce, Duke, and Mia, with additions from Cass, manage to piece together what exactly is going on with the aforementioned war that Bruce had only been kinda sure was even happening. Because of the communication barrier (that Cass may or not be playing up to get what she wants), Cass joined the trio on the streets within a week, and was adopted within a month. The League immediately takes notice of this and approximately 200 assassins of differing factions within the League all descend upon Gotham and start fighting each other, their own factions, and Batman and Co. By the time the dust settles, Talia has made an appearance personally in Gotham. She and Damain get into a blow-up fight about her leaving him with Bruce all those years ago, Damian has another morality crisis (to kill or not to kill, that is the question), and Talia and him part with a new, if not better, relationship. They learn that Cass made her first kill three years ago and immediately ran away from David Cain, which is what started this whole mess in the first place. Mia starts calling Cass “Batgirl”, as a throwback to her first alias back when she was in elementary school and still doing her best to annoy Batman into training her. Also, while the gazillion assassins were in Gotham, Maps met a magic specialist who took interest in her near-encyclopedic knowledge of occult theory and offered to train her in the practice. Mia accepted and leaves Gotham to train with no warning to anyone but the Bats, so congrats to her for becoming another cold case in a long history of Gotham cold cases, this is what ten-year-old Mia would have wanted.

Ch 4 excerpt - Isabella
(540 words today! Hooray!)
It’s eerie how little my father has changed.
He’s standing in front of the windows, looking out of them, haloed in light that’s flowing into the room around his shoulders, framed beyond that by the off-white curtains embroidered with gold, framed beyond that by the creamy yellow walls, and beyond that by the palace staff, each in their own tiers of tan, or tawn, or brown. He’s the center of the world, in his perfect white coat with the red sash, always the brightest spot in every room. No one else in this castle is allowed to wear pure white like he is. Not even my mother was, when she was his wife.
He’s so much the same—not a hair or wrinkle different—that I keep having little moments where I feel like a child again. Like I’ve been caught playing in the aviary, avoiding my tutors, and I’m about to get a lecture.
When he spins, though, he’s smiling in a way that is so much worse. Smiling in the way he did when I got older, and he’d do things like explain the intricacies of foreign trade negotiations with Jhar, or the influence of escrowers on government, or the innate power wielded by an heir in court. He smiles like he’s explaining how we were going to prevent a war with Konighaus, back when I was still listening in awe and drinking up every word.
He lifts one finger, shaking it chidingly beneath that smile, “You’ve been holding out on me!”
I don’t have time to respond before he laughs, sweeping one arm forward over the desk to offer Creed another seele. “It’s so good to finally meet you, Master Creed. Would you prefer I call you that? Or is Vince more comfortable?”
Creed startles. “Uh.” He steps forward to accept the handshake, bobbing his head in another bow as he does. “Creed, Sire. Thank you, Sire.”
“Creed it is, then. You must be quite the man, to have earned a place by my daughter’s side. I imagine her status as heir to this empire is something of a secret. But obviously not for you. She trusts you?”
“It… certainly seems so,” Creed says.
“And do you trust her?”
Creed’s eyes flick to mine. “Of course.”
I squirm under his gaze, not because Creed shouldn’t trust me, but because my father doesn’t give a damn about anything if it doesn’t benefit him in some way. “That’s enough,” I say, working to keep my composure this time. “Leave Creed alone.”
My father leans back from the desk, only touching it with his fingertips. His hair settles against the high, fitted neck on his coat, stopping just above his collarbones. “I’ve been working on a plan to disestablish the Church, you know.”
Creed is looking at me.
“Why should I care?”
My father smiles. “Because I suspect you wouldn’t need to be here if they lost their Right of Inquisition.”
I exhale slowly, trying to control my voice. “We can handle the Inquisition.”
“Can you?”
It’s a challenge, a throwback to the last thing I “couldn’t handle.” My voice comes out so strained it’s barely audible. “You couldn’t revoke their rights in a single province without starting a civil war.”
