you had no idea what you'd gotten yourself into.

and you wanted that, too.

but you always buried those feelings deep down. it wasn't his fault, and you couldn't blame him for it either, so you pretended it was never there in the first place. instead, you put on a brave face. it wasn't too difficult, and for some short moments, you did truly believe that you were happy, regardless of how out of place you felt sometimes around dick and his brothers and sisters.

brothers and sisters. those words were so foreign to you, that when you looked over the relationships you had with dick and his family, you almost had a sort of epiphany. none of them were blood related at all, but they went through thick and thin together no matter what. and a small part of you hoped, wished, that maybe you could be apart of that too.

maybe it was all just irrational.

"why don't you come stay wayne manor?"

and you did. you thought about it quite a lot actually, even before dick had asked you that ludicrous question. and he was right. it would make things easier. you'd have a stable roof over your head, instead of the cracked ones that leaked like your dormatory back in gotham. you'd be able to spend more time with the people you cared about. you'd have people that cared about you too, look after you, and defend you if needed. it couldn't be that bad, right?

that's how you ended up here.

in a room that was bigger than all the shitty squats you lived since you were a kid combined. there was so much space you didn't know what to do with it. but the rowdiness of the boys and girls outside your door brought a smile to your face. life at wayne manor would call for some serious adjustment, but you felt like you could power through it. plus, it was only a bonus that you'd always thought jason was cute, much to dick's disgust.

the first couple of weeks staying here were honestly going great, much to your surprise. the family had welcomed you with open arms, some of them not even batting an eye when you regularly attended dinner with them, or walked around in your pajamas, or were quick to be in the cave once it was time for patrol. like you were supposed to be there all along.

your friendship with dick was more of the same, only now you lived with him. jason and you had gotten closer, but you didn't trust calling whatever feelings you had for him enough to call it a crush. you didn't always understand whatever nerd stuff tim would ramble about, but you listened to him anways. you appreciated how much stephanie and cass involved you into their movie nights and gossiping. well more you and stephanie gossiping than cass, but it still felt like you had the girl best friends you had always craved for. damian took some time to warm up to you, but you could still bond with him over his art and love for animals. alfred loved you already, so there wasn't much there to add. and then there was bruce.

you couldn't quite place your finger on bruce. even when you were younger, his stoicism and broodiness was something you couldn't get past, only in rare moments. there was always something about him that you found off-putting. granted that he was always kind, if that's even the right word for it, he never made you feel unwelcome, but you always felt uneasy around the man.

It has been about eight months since I came back to BATFAMILY fic and this will be my ninth set of recs, which means I'm at about 500 or so for this one fandom, which is kind of blowing my mind a little, but also tracks pretty well, given how amazing the fic in the fandom can be. i love your art! i’m just beginning to get into your fics and am loving your writing too. i am in awe of your many talents 💛 was wondering what comics you recommend for new-ish readers? i’ve read a couple batman&batfam books but want to know where to go next. what’s the good stuff, you know?

ahh hello!!! ty kindly hehehehe. if ur just starting out and want to focus on batman specific books thee most accessible and cohesive list to begin with would be batman year one > long halloween > dark victory > robin and batman > robin year one > batgirl year one. this will get u super familiar with the earlier players — bruce, alfred, dick, babs, and the rogues. some of the comics are worse or better than others but they’re also the most likely finds at a comic shop!!

after that it’s all about figuring out what character you gravitate towards. u can look at big events like no man’s land, knightfall, and bruce wayne murderer/fugitive, or team books like justice league international, new teen titans, and young justice. other batbooks id recommend would be a lonely place of dying (tims intro), batgirl 2000 (cass’s solo), gotham knights and the batman chronicles (particularly oracle year one), and worlds finest: teen titans (the new og teen titans book). robin son of batman is a great book for damian, and we are robin and batman and the signal are great intros to duke thomas if ur after something more recent.

that can be overwhelming tho! if ur after some light hearted comics that cover a broad range of characters tiny titans and lil gotham are also excellent — and can introduce u to the wider universe! a lot of new readers start with under the red hood or red robin 2009 which are like…. among the worst points of introduction. they rely on a lot of context for pre existing canon, and rr specifically is not reflective of the rest of tims comic run.

some of my other personal favourites are impulse 1995, black mirror, wonder woman historia, and gates of gotham. there’s so many great and innovative comics out there!! please don’t be afraid of how deep the water looks before u jump!!!!!!!

Reverse Robins: Joker Junior series by miyaji_08 i rec’d the second fic in this series over here for the timkon of it all, but the series—two parts, both complete—is also one of my absolute favorite reverse robins stories. it goes the joker junior!tim route, so heads up for A Lot of tim-centric trauma, but gives tim (and everyone else) so much healing, too. it also gets creative with the robin of it all, as in, the call sign for batman’s partner is different from the jump because dick wasn’t around to originate “robin” for it, which i always think is a fun extra detail. the batfam characters are great and the young justice crew is also great, so read for top-tier hurt and comfort and great characters and satisfying plot and tim and damian competing to see who is the most Tired big brother of the bunch.

blood of the covenant by envysparkler robins are angsty in any order, but man does this hit the angst sweet spot, which in turn makes the soft parts feel even softer. i genuinely can’t decide what my favorite dynamic is in this AU, between damian & tim (damian wracked with guilt, tim hurting and still wanting an older brother even if he’d never admit it) and tim & jason (no spoilers but chapter 4 especially lights my brain up like a supernova) and tim & dick (i think about the part where dick grayson [tiny, cheerful] uses tim [undead, annoyed] as a jungle gym like once a week).

Wing Beats in Reverse by firefright a longfic where jason gets kidnapped by the mysterious red hood, who turns out to be jason’s not-so-dead predecessor. the jason pov here is great, and i was so compelled by how this AU explored his place in the bat family, and how it managed the emotional fallout from the kidnapping. tim is also so interesting in this—it does something i love in a reverse robins concept, which is make tim’s motivations (and lazarus pit effects) less about anger/hurt/revenge and more about ice cold logic, about being the villain so the bats don’t have to/whether they want him to or not. plus some league of assassins trauma as a cherry on top. also, kon gets to show up for a bit. (as a fair warning—and spoilers ahead—the fic has a somewhat hopeful ending for tim, but doesn’t reach full reconciliation in the scope of the plot.)

i woke up so worried that the angels let go by circees a short but potent batkids age reversal au that’s also a grisha au, starring duke as the coveted sun summoner that damian is trying to deliver to safety without mentally adopting a new brother (damian fails on the second part). even with my limited memory of grisha lore i could tell a lot of thought was put into this au, and i have a feeling it would be even better if you are able to catch all the details. i also love that even in a fantasy world where some of the bat family have magical abilities, duke is still extra special—a great analogy to being a metahuman among the bats.

The 90s Are Back! by RedWritingHood saving the two silly ones for last to lighten the mood! in this one, red hood!tim gets de-aged to sixteen and meets all his new siblings. it’s like .01% angst and 99.99% shenanigans, and pretty much all the dialogue is super quotable but Dick holds out his hands like he's calming a bunch of wild animals. "Okay, I know everyone's real upsetti spaghetti right now, but I think we all just need to calm down." might take the cake.

Clowns Don’t Kill People by mademoisellePlume very short, very silly reverse robins brother shenanigans, in which tiny dick grayson isn’t scared of recovering joker junior!tim because dick, having been raised in the circus, doesn’t associate clowns with evil yet. the fic is fun (and a great palate cleanser if you need a break from the angst above), and the author’s note at the end made me fully laugh out loud.

part two of my headcannons for the batfam

bruce likes golf

like really really likes golf

when he was younger he really wanted to be a detective, he guess he kinda is one if you thought about it in a roundabout way

dick is a health nut

like multiple protein shakes a day, avoids junk food for the most part, he really likes rice cakes, etc etc

but he always has junk food for when his brothers are over at his apartment

jason gets addicted to things really easily so he tries to stay away from things like drugs, alcohol, and excessive amount of caffeine and sugar

instead of one giant streak of white, i think jason would have something more along the lines of pre-mature graying

(i think that can happen when you're under excessive amount of stress for long time, don't quote me on that)

he has scars from trying to give himself piercings as a teen

he also has like three tiny stick and poke tattoos (also from when he was a teen)

all his electronics are from way back when. like he has a box tv, a landline, and even an iphone 4(no one really knows how it still works)

the only games tim has on his photo are games like sudoku, crosswords, and puzzles

he also only watches hours long youtube videos, things like 'i spent 1000 days in hardcore minecraft' or any video essay as long as it something he's interested in

tim also likes to read fanfics

mostly ship fics of red robin and superboy because he thinks it's funny to send them to kon

he always wears socks, even to bed

when he was ten or so he had a youtube gaming channel but the audio and quality are so bad you can't really tell it's him(they're bad because he literally just looked up 'headphones with mic' and 'web cam for youtube' and chose the first options

damian is a sticky ipad kid

like he watches channels specifically made for kids

not like cocomelon but like the really weird ones that made videos about spiderman and elsa having kids

he won't admit it but he loves kids movies

like inside out and toy story 3 make him cry every time he watches them

and finally the main 5 that i talk about(bruce, dick, jason, tim, and damian) plus alfred all have matching family bracelets

it started out as just the batbros having them but they eventually convinced bruce and alfred to wear them too

the colors are: blue for dick, dark red for jay, bright red for tim, and green for damian

oooh snippets from the batfam fics that haven’t been asked already (or also maybe please more snippets from already asked ones?) I just love batfam, okay?

Lemme check here, hang on--Let's go with Tim does Home Alone, an early adoption AU in which a nine-and-a-half year old Tim is unexpectedly home alone at Christmas time when his boarding school had to close for a bug problem and his parents were out of the country. Tiny Tim has also just seen Home Alone for the first time, and has, in true Tim fashion, set up a bunch of Home-Alone-style traps around the townhouse and tried to reenact bits of the movie (going to the grocery store, ordering a pizza, etc etc) to varying degrees of success.

Unknown to him, the bats have recently come into some intel that Drake Industries may or may not be involved with some Crime TBD. On top of that, they're pretty sure that someone involved may have information about their identities (due to reasons I haven't figured out) Since the Drake family is abroad for the holidays, it's a great time for Nightwing and Batman to break in and see if they can find any evidence.

By the time the traps are sprung, it's too late to back out. Tiny Tim becomes convinced he's now a super villain for lighting Nightwing's mullet on fire like that, so he really leans into his new evil role even as he despairs attacking his heroes like this.

Eventually new-to-Robin Jason also shows up, recognizes what's happening, and leads to this snip:

“Hey, yo, Kevin McCallister!” Robin calls out.

Tim goes still at the name. He should’ve known that Robin would recognize the movie. He wishes Robin was the one to get here, hours ago, before Tim went full dark side. Robin would’ve kept it fun, would have connected the dots sooner, instead of letting Tim accidentally make it scary and bad so fast.

Robin says, “You can come on out, kid, you’re not in trouble.”

Oh, no, Robin’s a liar. Tim wishes he didn’t know that, because he’d like to think that Robin tells the truth, but Tim’s definitely in trouble. Tim shot Batman in the butt with a crossbow. He lit Nightwing’s head on fire. He got them both with the ice. He did these things and he did them at Christmas. He’s a villain, a bad guy, the lowest of the low. It’s Blackgate for Tim, or maybe even Arkham. Tim’s gotta be crazy to be this deep this fast, right? He shrinks down further. He doesn’t think he’ll do well in a jail or asylum.

Robin ventures further into the townhouse. From his hiding spot on the landing, Tim can see him looking around. “I mean it,” he says. “I’m sorry these two dinguses fucked up, uh, messed up your Christmas. I made them wait outside. They’re not gonna bother you anymore. Hello? You here? Kev?”

There’s nothing else for it. Tim stands up and peeks over the railing. Robin clocks the movement immediately, and holds up a hand in a wave. Slowly, very slowly, slow as he can, Tim eases down the stairs until he’s standing in front of the vigilante.

“Macaulay Culkin, I presume,” says Robin.

“M’Tim,” he says, because it’s hard to talk around the painful lump that’s swelling up in his throat.

Tiny Not Sober AUs for DC/DP to encourage my hyper fixation:

1) Jack Fenton is the time traveling clone/son of both Superman and Batman. An organization mixed their DNA. A scientist felt guilty about raising a baby to be a weapon so they stole the baby. Would have given them over to the heroes. Didn’t happen. Baby got lost in time to become Jack. He’s thrilled learning this when it comes out after the organization is exposed and the heroes look for the baby.

2) Okay so I read a fic where Maddie is the one gunho about dissection and stuff while Jack FREAKS out, saving his son. I wanna use that idea and have Jack discover Danny is Phantom when he was walks into the lab to find his wife HURTING THEIR KID. He stops her, learns everything, tries to help his son and is forced to knock Maddie out. He takes Danny and Jazz, running to Gotham to protect them because Jazz was also locked up because Maddie learned she is liminal. Jack meets a very nice man who runs a club he works as a bouncer for while keeping his kids safe. His kids were making friends and his boss was awesome about the fake ID stuff. Now if only that furry wasn’t breaking things at the club and his son’s ghost enemies didn’t follow him

3) I latched onto Jack. I don’t know why. But okay so Jack and Maddie get divorced after the portal thing because they found Danny going into it, freaked and Maddie didn’t take it well. Jack refuses to let her hurt him and divorces her. Her claiming her son is half ghost, evil and must be destroyed gets held up in court.

Then Phantom shit happens and everyone figures it out really early. Maddie is keeping the portal open and shit. I’m a little not sober as I write this so�� I will expand later if asked. Jack decides he needs to call up his old friend from college he made before he got into ghosts: Barry Allen, forensics scientist. Why? “Oh he’s the Flash. The guy was BAD at hiding it. Like super bad.”

*proceeds to not see that Vlad is evil until Danny spells it out* “ah. Oh maybe it’s cause we dated.”

Cue record scratch and insanity.

4) Ellie out of nowhere rapidly gets sick. Trans!Danny needs to mix her DNA with someone else’s or she’ll die. He panics and uses a random DNA sample from the ghost zone cause there’s a ghost there with an obsession for science he was visiting. The DNA is of either: Tim or Dick.

Ellie gets deaged to newborn and Danny freaks out. Of course now he’s aware he needs to tell the other parent cause it’s be fucking rude otherwise. Luckily, he had slept with the other ‘parent’ long enough it fits. Danny has some help acting as if it was a pregnancy out of nowhere. As in ‘didn’t notice at all’. Mostly doctors help faking it and some illusions.

He then contacts the other dad.

Or: Ellie’s orb gets absorbed and now Danny has to give birth so he seduces the other person so Ellie can have two dads. Or he just has to find someone to do that with?!?

5) … I have a thing about pregnancy fics and kid stories but like: some rouge kidnaps trans!Danny cause his DNA was in the system after his parents had him and Jazz be put into it before he went ghost. Why? Cause Jack was worried that his connection to his cousin Clark would be discovered. Because Jack knew Clark was Superman and worried. (Also: this AU has the parents knowing from the get go cause I keep trying to find a fic like that, with good parents.)

But so like I did some bitty gritty research on this but fuck it its a world with ghosts and superheroes. I don’t care if it doesn’t match with reality. Danny’s DNA has him being riven to be a genetically compatible person to one of the bat kids. Like any child born from them would be the ‘perfect’ specimen or bled or whatever. So now Danny got snatched and pregnant and the Batfam saves him cause Jack calls up his cousin. They find out and it’s chaos.

6) Trans!Danny is the twin of Damian cause I’ve only seen it once but the sentance: you picked a name for yourself but go by another is stuck in my head and also the shenanigans of Damian learning his twin survived, is really a boy and all is fun. Bonus: Ellie is a baby so Damian is convinced he’s an uncle.

He’s not wrong.
