This is long over due and I’m sorry its so short but this is the end to this story and I’m proud of it. Thank you so much for the love and support of this story it means so much to me. So please enjoy
Part 4
Tumblr media
I was about to kiss Kendall again when I heard the person, I've been trying to avoid all night “Y/N!” I shiver and turn to see my uncle with a smile on his face which is odd cause he’s looking at me. “What do you want.” Kendall held me closer knowing my body change quickly “uncle Cameron this is my boyfriend Kendall, Kendall my uncle Cameron.” They shook hands “yea we met.” I was shocked from what my uncle said and by the anger from Kendall’s expression it wasn't a good meeting. “Yea we have, how are you, Cameron?” When did they meet and how didn’t I know about it? “I'm fine son, I've listened to your band's album you guys are good you ever thought about going solo?” Did my uncle really ask him that? Before I could say anything, Kendall squeezed my hand as he spoke “why are you here? Since you tend to bring Y/N down anyway.” I was shocked at that, have they talked about me before? “I would never, I mean after that video she’s defiantly improved which is why Y/N.” he directed his attention towards me “I would love to buy that song off your hands.” I'm sorry did he not watch my video “I'm sorry I'm going to have to ask you to leave.” Kendall smiled my way at my statement “I'm sorry?” Kendall replied, “you heard her.” He was about to speak but I didn’t want to hear any more so I said two words that would get him off the premises “Freight Train!” My uncle looked at me like I was crazy until a big black man the size of a train was at my uncles' side who then looked his way terrified. “You called Ms. L/n?” I met Freight Train when I spent all that time at the studio, and we’ve been friends ever since. Kendall started laughing at my uncle's expression “yes Freight Train, I need you to take this man off the premises he’s been bringing me down all my life and I did not invite him to my premier so please escort him out.” “With pleasure Ms. L/n.” Before my uncle could say anything, Freight Train lifted him off his feet and carried him towards the exit.
I looked in Kendall’s direction and asked, “When did you meet my uncle?” he sighed “Remember that day I invited you too the hockey game and he was in town.” I nodded “well when I came to pick you up, he answered the door and asked me who I was looking for, I mentioned you and he told me you weren't the kind of girl I should be dating, of course we weren’t dating at the time but it made me so angry that he would talk about you like that, I blew up on him and he told me to relax he was only kidding and went to get you.” I knew my uncle has said terrible things about me, but I never knew he said anything to Kendall. “Is that why you were acting strange on the way there?” he nodded “your uncle pissed me off so much I wanted to go back to your house after to give him more a piece of my mind, no one ever talks about you like that whether I'm your friend or boyfriend no one will ever speak less of you in my presence, I promise you that Y/N.” I began to feel tears fall and I pulled Kendall into a strong hug not wanting to let him go. “Thank you, Kendall, and I’m sorry I should have told you what was going on from the beginning.” He held me tighter and whispered, “Its ok Y/n, we worked everything out like we always do.” We pulled away from each other and smiled, he was about to kiss me again, but Griffin interrupted by jumping out of nowhere “Y/n, great performance will defiantly put that one on the album” Kendall and I both jumped from his presence. “Jesus Griffin, I should buy you a bell, but I’m sorry that song is Kendall’s song its only for him.” He nodded “fair enough but great party and I can’t wait to see what you come up with next.” He then walked away with his entourage following behind him.
The boys and Camille then rushed over to us with smiles and questions “so are you guys, ok? Did the song work? Can we all be friends again? Is the group back together?” Kendall and I both yelled “guys calm down.” And laughed “we’re ok everything's fine now.” They all cheered and were happy nothing was wrong anymore. We may all go through some ups and downs, but I know will always be ok were a team and nothing will ever break that.

1) Different First Meeting: Carlos, while patrolling, gets into a car accident. He isn’t seriously injured, but he’s stuck in his car and concussed. He gets rescued by TK and the newly re-formed Station 126. Concussed Carlos flirts non-stop with the gorgeous firefighter but when he wakes up in the hospital, he thinks he hallucinated the guy to his rescue.  ------> “You and I, Collide” by @bellakitse
2) TK is obviously seeing someone. Everyone at 126 can see that, but they don’t know who the mystery guy is (they tried to pry the information from TK, but he’s tight-lipped). One night, while the team is out at the bar with the paramedic team and Carlos, Paul’s attention is caught by TK’s hand on Carlos’ hip while passing him by. He does his “thing” and observes them: the subtle smiles and looks, the subtle flirting and touching, a longing look while the other walks away and a little jealousy when someone approaches the other. They aren’t obvious, but Paul puts together the pieces and ends up blurting out “YOU’RE THE MYSTERY GUY!”. ------> “Secret Smiles” by @brillliantbanshee
3) Different First Meeting: In the first weeks in Austin, the station 126 is still under renovation, and TK, used to take advantage of his station’s gym equipments, needs to find himself a gym to go to. The one he chooses, happens to be the favorite of a certain APD’s officer.  ------> “One for the Pro Column” by @bellakitse
4) Michelle has been trying for years to find a boyfriend for her best friend Carlos. Everytime she tried to introduce him someone, though, it ends up a failure. When Michelle meets the new firefighting crew of the Station 126 and meets TK Strand, she’s sure she has found the perfect fit for Carlos. Carlos is very skeptical, despite Michelle’s descriptions and praises of the guy (he has experience with her terrible matchmaking skills), but he still agrees to stop by the station.  ------> “The Last of the Romantics” by @bellakitse
5) A couple of Carlos’ sisters are out one night. When they spot their brother, they’re about to say hi, when they notice he’s not alone. It looks like their brother is picking up takeout food with a gorgeous guy and it looks like they aren’t just friends. The two scheme on how to bring up the topic with their brother, and they decide to do it at family dinner, in front of everyone.
6) The 126 tries to guess TK’s full name for years, but the mystery remains unsolved. The mystery is solved when Carlos proposes to him, calling him “Tyler Kennedy Strand”. ------> “The Name of the Game” by Gwenders
7) Carlos and TK have the same phone’s model. One morning, while in a hurry, TK grabs accidentally Carlos’ phone. He’s waiting for a call so, when the phone rings, he doesn’t even look at the caller ID and answers. He doesn’t expect it to be someone looking for Carlos, his mother. ------> “Crossed Connections” by Aklusmos
8) The 126 firefighting crew, the paramedics team and Carlos are out at their favorite bar for the night. Carlos needs to unwind a bit after a difficult week and he’s slightly drunk, but also really cute, clingy with his boyfriend and filterless. ------> “Cuervo Confessions” by @bellakitse
9) The 126 answers a call about an unconscious vlogger who passed out during a live video. TK brings down the door, they enter the apartment and set to help the unconscious patient, unknowingly, in front of the live camera. Despite Marjan, Paul and Mateo’s ongoing competition for social media fame, it’s TK who steals the show and goes viral, becoming, unwillingly, an internet sensation. (NOT SPECIFICALLY A TARLOS PROMPT, BUT STILL COULD BE ONE)
10) It’s Carlos’ birthday and his family is planning a surprise party for him at his own apartment, for when he gets home after his shift. They turn off the lights and wait for him to come home. But it’s actually Carlos that surprises them all when he shows up while passionately kissing, making out and undressing with a unknown guy (like in 1x02).  ------> “Birthday Surprises” by Aklusmos
11) The 126 answers a call about a car accident. In one of the cars there’s a woman, not too badly hurt but stuck in the car. TK crawls in the car wreck to check on her while the others work on how to free her. The woman says something about him being charming and probably being a ladies’ man, but he tells her he plays for the other team (like with Owen’s chemo friend in 1x05). The woman is even happier and she tells him she has a very handsome and single gay son, but TK, even if endeared, tells her his boyfriend wouldn’t approve. But TK is shocked when a frantic Carlos shows up, cause the woman in the car is actually his mother (and yes, she doesn’t know her son has a boyfriend). ------> “Collisions” by Aklusmos
12) TK and Carlos have been chosen to go to their district’s high school for Career Week representing, respectively, the Fire and Police Departments, to have someone closer to the students’ age. The students expect the usual middle aged guys when the two come in. ------> “Somebody Call 9-1-1″ by Aklusmos
13) Owen comes back home a day early from a short trip. The last thing he’s expecting is to find his son with a naked man in his bed (Is that Officer Reyes??). TK insists it’s a casual thing with no labels and little feelings, but the leftovers of a romantic dinner and the way the two behave and kiss each other goodbye, tell Owen otherwise.
14) When his sister asks Carlos to quickly borrow his phone to make a call, he doesn’t think twice about lending it to her. What she finds is a photo of her brother with a hot guy as the home and lock screen. ------> “Shout it to the World” by @brillliantbanshee
15) When TK and Carlos hooked up, it was always a rush thing, never even reaching the bedroom, and always ending with TK leaving before even getting to catch his breath. TK tried not to get too attached, even though he’s actually a really cuddly person, especially after sex. With the time passing and them getting to know each other, Carlos starts to see glimpses of this side of his non-boyfriend. When they officially get together, TK has no reasons to hide his cuddly side from Carlos.
16) TK is at the mall looking for a present, when he meets a little kid who lost their mom and uncle in the mall. TK is pretty good with kids and is still in uniform, so the kid trusts him and goes with him to the information desk to call for their mom. TK certainly doesn’t expect for his brand new boyfriend Carlos to show up with his sister, the kid’s mother. ------> “Let’s Go to the Mall” by @bellakitse
17) Mateo is out with some friends one night, when he spots TK. He’s about to call out to him to say hi and maybe invite him to join them, when he notices TK isn’t alone, he’s with officer Reyes and yep, they’re kissing. He doesn’t know what to do with that information and decides to keep it to himself, until one day he accidentally blurts it out to everybody.
18) One morning, Carlos shows up at the 126. Owen thinks officer Reyes is there to give him, the Fire Captain, some documents, or he’s there to meet with Michelle, since he knows they’re good friends. Instead, Carlos surprises him by being there to bring TK the phone he left at his apartment that morning.
19) TK has to go back to NYC for an old friend’s wedding and he brings Carlos as his date, even if they’re dating for only a few months. At the reception, they meet Alex, who thought he would meet an heartbroken and lonely TK, begging to be taken back (THIS IS AN ALTERNATE VERSION OF THE PROMPT #20).  ------> “A Puzzle I Love to Solve” by @brillliantbanshee
20) TK has to go back to NYC for an old friend's wedding. At the reception, among the guests there's Alex who's hoping to meet his old boyfriend TK to reconnect and maybe give their story a new chance. All his hopes are gone, when TK shows up with a husband and their kid (THIS IS AN ALTERNATE VERSION OF THE PROMPT #19).
21) TK and Carlos are casually seeing each other without putting labels on it and without the others knowing. TK spent the night at Carlos’ apartment, but he wakes up very late, he doesn’t have a car and waiting for a uber is a further waste of time. It’s Carlos’ day off and he offers him to take his car. TK then shows up at the 126 with a gorgeous blue Camaro, among everyone’s surprise.
22) TK and Carlos are casually seeing each other, without putting labels on it and without TK’s team and dad knowing. One night, TK bails on a team outing with an excuse, to see Carlos, when they accidentally end up at the same place as the 126.  ------> “Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Aklusmos
23) In the middle of the night, while on shift, Marjan wakes up to grab a glass of water, and finds an unusually soft TK talking to someone over the phone. It’s obvious it’s someone important to TK and Marjan is so very curious (TK and Marjan’s friendship). ------> “Midnight Talk About Boys” by @bellakitse
24) During a call, a guy shamelessly flirts with TK while he works, and Carlos shamelessly glares at the guy while trying not to arrest him.
25) TK and Carlos are seeing each other, without labels and without TK’s team and dad knowing. One night, the two accidentally fall asleep at TK’s house, and, in the morning, Carlos is a little late sneaking out and ends up reaching for the door in the exact moment Owen comes back home from the night shift.
26) One morning, TK is still asleep at Carlos’ house, while the latter is already at work. TK wakes up hearing sounds in the house and is getting ready to face a possible intruder, when he finds a middle aged woman in the kitchen re-stocking the fridge. It sure isn’t how TK thought he’d meet his boyfriend’s mother.
27) One of Carlos’ siblings is getting married and Carlos asks TK to go to the wedding with him as his date, and to introduce him to his family.
28) Carlos is injured on the job, nothing serious, but he’s in a hospital room with his entire family fretting over him, when a frantic TK, in uniform, shows up. Time to meet the family that didn’t know you existed!
29) Carlos is bringing his brand new boyfriend to a family BBQ to introduce him to his family. During the party, though, one of Carlos’ cousin, who’s pregnant, is starting to go into labor there, in the house backyard. Luckily, there’s a very calm and professional TK, who has experience in helping pregnant women and delivering babies.

Gifted
TITLE: Gifted (Sequel to Giftless)
CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: 1/?
AUTHOR: nekoamamori ORIGINAL IMAGINE:
Imagine that you are Stark’s niece and you secretly share a strong relationship with Loki since he entered the crew. One day you get hurt so bad during a mission that you are about to die.  Loki knows a spell that will save you and share his immortality with you but you and he will be linked forever sharing thoughts, pain, emotions…
RATING: T NOTES/WARNINGS:  Also on AO3 click here
Days and weeks passed and Loki didn’t return. There were no notes, no visits, no contact at all. You returned to your life immediately, determined to keep your word to yourself that you wouldn’t become a useless depressed lump over your boyfriend, no matter how much his absence hurt.  You still missed him deeply and your world was lonely without him, but you kept your word. You went on patrols with Tony. You kept up in all of your classwork easily because of the soulbond. You spent time with the other supers.
It was hard, but you managed your life.
You never took the ring Loki had given you off, choosing to hope that one day he would return.
You searched and searched for the spell-book with the portal spell in it, but it was gone. Vanished like it had never existed in this world. You tried to pull the memories of it from the soulbond, to figure out how to open the portal and follow him, but it wasn’t there.
You were cut off.
Your 19th birthday came and went. You allowed yourself tears that day when Loki didn’t come back for you. You had hoped the trouble would be over by then.
You graduated from high school top of the year, which was no surprise since you had access to all of Loki’s memories and knowledge thanks to the soulbond. You and Tony went to take your graduation pictures by your parents’ graves in the cemetery. You even used magic to hold the camera so you could get some shots of yourself and your uncle.
You started college across town and moved into an apartment off campus in Tony’s name. They wouldn’t let a freshman live off campus otherwise, but since it was in your uncle’s name, and he was Tony Stark, they made an exception. It had taken a lot of negotiations with the school and Fury to finally sort your college experience away. Fury wanted you to work full-time for the Avengers. You told him you would after you earned your PhD. You had wanted to be a doctor for so long when you were powerless that you didn’t want to give up on the dream now. You got to test out of most of the classes because of your soulbond with Loki, so you only had a few classes and clinical hours to complete to finish your degree. You could probably do it in a year if you really wanted to. Especially since the school was willing to use your hours healing the Avengers toward your clinical hours. It was a completely illogical plan and there were so many rules broken with it, but in the end, all three parties were happy.
You got an emergency call halfway through one of your lecture courses one day nearly a year after Loki had left. You shut your phone off and stood. You gave a small bow to the Asian professor and an apology. She nodded and the entire class turned to look at you. You had permission to leave all of your classes for emergency calls from the Avengers. You had found out quickly, though, that your disappearances were taken better if you gave them a show when you did. You vanished your bag and sent all of your things back to your apartment. You then used magic to change your clothes to your superhero costume, including the cape you never actually wore as part of it.
“Sigyn!” came the roar of the lecture class. With a bow to them, you teleported back to the compound where the Avengers lived. You actually teleported directly into the infirmary. A safe teleportation spot had been created for you there, and it was extra important now that you lived on your own. You vanished the cape, changing back to normal clothes, and rushed to the emergency bay to find the super who needed your help. It was a brand new kid, one you’d never met before.
“He jumped off of the Metropolis building trying to get his powers,” one of the junior healers told you as you rushed into the room.  Since magic was reintroduced to the world, kids tried stupid things to get latent powers to manifest.  Like jumping off the Metropolis building.
“I really wish someone would put a stop to that,” you replied as you went over to the kid. You placed your hands on him, your hands glowing blue as you healed the broken bones and put the poor kid back together again. Your powers had grown over the last year and you could do this big of a healing now without being useless for the rest of the day. You finished the healing and smiled at the junior healer. “He’ll be ok. Make sure Fury gives him hell for jumping off the Metropolis building,”
She nodded her agreement. “Will do, Healer Sigyn,” she replied. You were still getting used to being called that.  You were so used to just being Kat.  It had been a year of having powers and you still hadn’t really adjusted.
While you was home, you checked in on the other patients and healed a couple who needed it. After that, you went upstairs to see if Tony was home. “Kat!” he called the moment you opened his door. You let him wrap you in a hug, even though Uncle Tony wasn’t really a hugger.
“Uncle Tony, you just saw me two days ago.” you had been called out on patrol with the team just the other night.
“I know, but that’s the only time you ever see you anymore, imp,” he whined.
You smiled and grabbed the other video game controller on his coffee table. “Up for a game?” you asked. He laughed and you settled on his couch to play for awhile.
“Oh, I forgot to tell you. The next Avengers movie is being filmed here next week. Didn’t know if you wanted to stop by.”
You nodded enthusiastically. “Of course I do!” you replied with a grin. You were friends with a couple of the actors and hadn’t seen them in awhile.
“I worry about you, imp,” Tony said after awhile of kicking his ass at video games.
You rolled your eyes. “Why on Earth for? I’m one of the most powerful supers in existence, and the only time I even go on patrol it’s with you,” you reminded him as you proceeded to kill him in the game.
Again.
“You’ve isolated yourself from everyone,” he explained.
“Have not,” you replied stubbornly.
“Name one friend you have at school,”
“That doesn’t mean anything. I’m only going to be there for a year, two tops. It doesn’t make sense to get too attached to those kids,” you replied. It didn’t matter that you were younger than everyone in all of your classes. They still acted like kids.
“And when was the last time you went on a date?” he asked.
You glared at him. “Do you really want to know about my love life?” you demanded, hoping that would get him to drop it.
“No, but you worry about you enough to ask.”
“You know very well when my last date was,” you snarled at him. It was uncalled for to be so mean to your uncle when he was just being nice and asking about you, but it wasn’t nice of him to bring it up either.  He knew that you hadn’t moved past Loki.
You wouldn’t move past Loki.
Loki had promised to return.
And you were soulbound.
He would return.
“That’s what I thought,” Tony rolled his eyes.  “Kat, you can’t just keep waiting around for him to come back. He’s not coming back. It’s been a year.” Tony told you, gentling his tone.
“He will. He promised,” you told him firmly, though your words sounded like a little girl’s dream instead of the words of the strongest super in the world. You set down the controller and touched the ring Loki had given you the night he left before tracing the patterns of magic that went up your arm, marking you as soulbound. Loki had literally bound your souls and lives together to save your life.
“Kat…” Tony said gently.
You just glared at him. “I’m fine, Uncle Tony,” you told him firmly. “I’m sorry I haven’t been around as often, but I’m in college now and living on my own.”
He wrapped you in another hug. “I know. Sorry, Kat. I just worry about you,”
You nodded and hugged him back.  “I know. I don’t mean to worry you.  I really am ok,” you reassured him.
The lie felt hollow in your own mouth.
And no wonder Loki wrinkled his nose at lies. They smelled terrible.

return to sender; ch. 2
i said February lol here y’all go
 AO3;     zutara week 2019
to all the boys i’ve loved before AU — ch. 1
“Is this a bad time?”
Zuko stared at Katara.
“No…”
“You look distraught.” She sat at the counter and leaned her cheek against her palm.
“After the day I had, who wouldn’t be.”
“Well, I wanted to talk to you about today. Is that okay? Do you want to head to the patio in the back? Your uncle said it was a good place to talk.”
“Uh, sure.” He stood up and walked out from behind the counter. “Is everything okay?”
“Yea.”
The creakiness of Katara’s voice raised Zuko’s eyebrow.
“Are you sure?” Zuko sat in a chair.
Katara sat across from him. “Positive.” She tapped her fingers together. “A little known fact about me is that I am petty.”
Zuko crossed his arms. He thought of his sister and wondered what storms Katara hid. “Ok.”
“So, when Suki sent me a screenshot of Jet’s subtweets freaking out about us in the library, I just got a little happy.” Katara took in Zuko’s raised eyebrows and scoffed. “What is he gonna do? Dump me again?”
Zuko realized the storm was larger than he’d imagine. “You wanted to tell me we pissed Jet off?“
“No, I’m wondering if you’re interested in continuing to piss him off.”
Zuko frowned. “How?”
“The one thing you never want to do is show someone how to push your buttons. Jet just gave us a YouTube tutorial. He realizes it was a mistake to dump me. And the thought of me moving on is driving him crazy. I think it’s only fair to mess with him a little. He was a royal jerk. You know that better than anyone.”
“He is.”
“So are you interested in being my fake boyfriend just until Jet apologized for being a horrible human being.”
“That could take a while.”
“Jet can be pretty contrite when I’m involved.”
Zuko felt his eyebrows furrow. After the day I’ve had, the last thing I need is another ball to juggle on top of Je—
“And wouldn’t this temporarily solve the Jin situation? It didn’t look like you were too excited to talk to her about your letter.” Katara folded her hands under her chin and leaned her elbows on the table. “You don’t have much to lose.”
Zuko pursed his lips. A fake relationship seemed so over the top. “What would it look like?”
“Well,  we’d pretend to be a couple. We’ll say we started dating after you sent me your letter. We’ll go to parties and school events together. I can come to any theatre shows you have. We’ll hold hands—Jet hated it. It can be a win-win.” Katara’s eyes were sparkling.
“I don’t know.”
How many chances would he get to piss off Jet like this?
Katara hummed. “You don’t have to answer right now. Just think about it? Here let me give you my number.”
“Are there any other rules we should have in place?” Zuko handed his phone to Katara.
“Don’t fall in love with me, Ryuku,” Katara winked.
Yea, that’d be a bad idea.
“Here lemme walk you back.” Katara stood up.
Zuko followed her to the cafe. He saw a familiar ponytail and froze. He grabbed Katara’s arm before she could step in the cafe.
“Actually Katara, let’s do it.”
“Really?”
“Yea.” Zuko glanced above Katara before looking back at her. “Yes.”
She squealed before throwing her arms around his neck.
Zuko took a step back to steady himself, wrapping his arm around her. He saw Jin. She blinked and pivoted out of the cafe.
* * *
Katara stepped out of Zuko’s car.
“You’re supposed to let me open the door for you.”
Katara raised an eyebrow at him before glancing to the side. She turned to Zuko and beamed. “Sorry. It’ll be nice getting used to dating a gentlemen.”
Zuko turned and saw Jet. He took a deep breath and let it out. “Ready to go to class?”
“Yup!” Katara skipped around the car and took Zuko’s hand. She pulled out her phone. “Quick picture?”
Zuko nodded, a blush taking over his cheeks. He leaned towards her as she took the photo.
The relationship reminded Zuko of a bubble. It was pretty. But, he knew it wouldn’t last long.
* * *
“Ryuku,” preceded an arm being flung around Zuko’s shoulder. “What’s up?”
“Gas prices, Jet.”
Jet chuckled. “Always the killjoy, huh, Ryuku? Saw you with Katara this morning. What’s that about?”
“We’re dating. I wrote her a letter and the feeling was mutual.”
“I knew you had a thing for her,” Jet said dropping his voice menacingly low. Zuko knocked Jet’s arm away. “And yet, I never ruined your chances with Katara. You managed to do that all on your own.”
* * *
Katara scanned Zuko’s face. “Are you okay?”
“I saw Jet and—”
“What did he say?”
“He wasn’t thrilled we’re dating.”
Katara rolled her eyes. “His problem.” She stuck her hand out. “Are you ready?” She smiled.
Zuko reluctantly smiled back. He took her hand. “Lead the way.”
“This is Zuko, my boyfriend.”
In turn, Katara introduced her friends so quickly Zuko didn’t catch the names. He started to ask for them to say their names again.
But, one of the girls started talking.
Zuko sighed, hoping someone would say a name so he could start to memorize them. But he only heard Iri and Haru’s names.
At the end of lunch, Haru extended a fist towards Zuko. “Zuko, nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you,” he returned the fist bump.
“You have to be at my Halloween party.”
Zuko smiled. “Sure.”
Katara stood beside Haru. “Yay!” She shook her fists in a cheer. “We should have a couples’ costume.”
Zuko looked at the ceiling, raising his eyebrows. “I’m happy to hear ideas.”
Katara giggled. “Perfect.”
+
Zuko watched Katara take the ball back from a defender and lead the attack on the other side.
“Your girlfriend is great.”
“I don’t know that much about soccer.” Zuko turned to Mai.
Sitting besides him, she scoffed. “You’re supposed to say ‘she is.’ You’re terrible at this. How did you two start dating again?”
“Uh, Katara got a letter and we realized the feeling was mutual.”
“Mhm,” Mai watched as the other team started their counter.
Ty Lee stood in the goal, shouting instructions to the defense. “Romantic.”
“How did you and Ty Lee start dating?”
“We were friends and one day Ty Lee asked me if I liked girls. Sometimes, it feels like I was just waiting for someone to notice…I’m glad it was her. She asked me out and we’ve been together ever since.”
“That’s sweet.”
“Pay attention to the game Zuko.”
The referee on the field blew the final whistle.
“Well,” Mai stood up. “I’m gonna wait in my car for Ty Lee. Later Zuko.”
“Later Mai.”
Zuko looked at the field. The players circled around their coach. She talked for several minutes before clapping. The girls got up and started running around the field putting things away—the flags, the cooler, the soccer balls.
Katara looked at the bleachers and waved at Zuko. She raised her pointer finger.  Give me a minute.
Leaning back, Zuko nodded.
This time Katara walked out from the gym and waved again, beckoning Zuko to join her.
“Thanks for coming out.”
“Of course.”
Katara pulled out her phone. “C’mhere.”
Zuko shuffled towards her.
She turned as he stood behind her. She extended her arm before tutting.
“Can you talk the picture? My arm is too short.”
Zuko took the phone and angled the camera to capture both of them.
“Perfect.” Katara smiled, leaning back against him. “Cheese!”
Zuko smiled and took the photo.
Satisfied with the photo, Katara smiled at Zuko. “What a great way to end the day!”
Zuko’s heart fluttered. “Yea.”
+
After Zuko dropped her home, he stared at the photo Katara tagged him in. The sun had just begun to set when he took the picture and it brought out the gold in his eyes and made Katara’s skin glow.
They looked…good together. Like a natural couple.
Katara’s caption—soccer husbands of Republic City—made him chuckle.
Katara’s having too much fun with this.
+
“So you’re the guy who’s been dating my sister?” Sokka used a toothpaste to clean his teeth.
“Yes.” Zuko sat opposite Sokka waiting for him to say something.
Sokka was home on break from the magnet school he went to. The school was on the other side of the county so Sokka stayed with his grandmother.
Sweat collected on Zuko’s palms and he wiped them on his pants.
This is just a formality, Ryuku. You need to meet Sokka to keep up appearances and that’s all.
“So, are you a sophomore like Katara?”
“I’m a senior.”
Sokka let out a low whistle. “Way to go, Tara.”
There’s no reason for you to be so nervous.
“What do you do for fun?”
“Fun?”
“Yea. When you’re not at school or work?”
A groove formed in Zuko’s forehead as he tried to recall the last thing he did for fun.
Sokka snorted. “Oh boy. You’re definitely meant for my sister.”
“No! I mean I train at the dojo.”
“And, is your brain completely off?”
The groove grew deeper. “No.”
“Exactly! I have something to introduce you to.” Sokka stood up. “C’mon.” He led Zuko into his room, “Sit,” Sokka said, pointing to a beanbag.
Zuko did, watching Sokka turn on a small tv and the game console next to it.
“We’re gonna play some video games. You need to get a hobby.”
“Uh,” Zuko accepted the controller from Sokka. “Ok.”
“We need to avoid the guards and save the princess.”
“So, I shouldn’t try to think of how to save the princess?”
“Shh. It’s a different part of the brain.”
The game music filled the silence.
“This is going pretty well,” Sokka mumbled.
“Watch out!”
The defeated score played.
“Ugh! Let’s try it again.” Sokka reset the game.
Zuko let his shoulders drop. His brain needed the break. Even though it sounded like a hasty excuse, Sokka was right: the video game felt like a different part of his brain.
“Are you two done in here?”
Zuko looked away for a moment.
“Zuko, look out!”
Turning back too late, a guard captured Zuko’s game sprite.
“Sorry,” Katara sat on Sokka’s bed in between the two of them.
The tiny growl in Sokka’s throat suggested disbelief. “What do you want?”
“Zuko and I were gonna go study.”
“You said he’s like a star student and so are you. Let him goof off once in a while.”
Katara pouted.
Placing his controller down, Zuko turned to Sokka, “Thanks, Sokka. I had fun.”
“Katara gets everyone to do what she wants,” Sokka leaned back against the wall.
Although he could see the expression on Katara’s face, he knew she was either smirking or sticking her tongue out at her brother.
“Fine. I’ll let you kids study. Next time I’m in town we’ll try the new game I got last week.”
“Oh bubby,” Katara used a baby talk tone. “Let’s take a picture.” Katara placed an arm around Sokka’s neck. “Zuko you too.” She handed her phone to Sokka and put her other arm around Zuko’s shoulders. “My two favorite boys.”
“Ooh. How cute,” Sokka mocked. “Smile!”
+
Zuko was unsure if knowing Katara would visit was contributing to his nerves or bringing them down.
Their high school put on a renaissance fair every year instead of the usual homecoming fair. An alumni helped with the alehouse and the theatre program supplied actors around the grounds for an authentic experience.
“Hey you!” Katara waved. “Earl of the Pearl manor, correct?”
“Yes,” Zuko smirked, “how can I be of service?”
“The show starts in an hour, right?”
“Yes, my lady.”
“Good. Can’t wait to see you perform,” Katara smiled. “Sorry, outsell!”
Zuko felt his chest grow light.
“Can we take a picture?” She brandished her phone.
“Is that a new case?” He whispered, breaking character.
Katara blinked, “Yea.”
“It suits you.” He took the phone from her hands and raised it to take the picture.
The fruit from Katara’s shampoo signaled she was getting closer to him. She pressed her head under his chin.
Zuko’s heart stuttered.
“Smile,” she giggled.
He listened.
After Zuko handed her phone back, she cooed looking at her phone. “That reminds me. I found a couple’s outfit that should be perfect for Haru’s party. For someone in the theatrical arts, you’d think you’d be more into costumes. But! This should work,” she turned her phone to show the picture to Zuko. “Your costume will be a lot simpler than mine and we’ll have plenty of time to put it all together. What do you think?”
Zuko rubbed the back of his neck. “Yea. That could work.”
“Don’t forget we’ll all be in costume. And, besides you’ll be with me,” Katara winked.
Before he could stop himself, he was smiling. “Okay.”
“Break a leg, Zuko! Can’t wait to see you in action.”
+
“What are you wearing Jake from State Farm?” Katara giggled.
Zuko snorted, finding her laughter funnier than the joke she was repeating since he picked her up. Pulling into a parking spot, he shut the engine off.
Clicking her tongue, she showed him the poll results on her Instagram story. “No fair! People think you’d give better insurance than I would.”
The photo Katara’s dad took of them served as the background to the poll Katara described.
“Maybe pointing the price gun at the camera wasn’t the best idea.”
Katara pointed, looking down at it, ”Sokka worked hard on this.”
“He did, but it might not be the best PR strategy.”
“Well, what do you know?”
“Enough to beat you in the polls.”
Katara hmpfed. “Obviously, it’s because you’re cute.”
Zuko froze. “Huh?”
“Don’t try to fish for compliments Ry—“ She blinked at him. “Oh, you’re serious. Zuko you do know you’re handsome right?”
“I, um,” facing the steering wheel, he struggled to pull the key out of the ignition. “Someone may have mentioned it.”
“But, do you believe it?”
He shrugged, before finally freeing the key.
“You should. You’re very handsome.”
The keys bit into his palm. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome!”
“Well, uh, we should go inside.”
Before Zuko could knock on the front door. Katara tugged on his hand. “First, the doors always unlocked. No need to announce yourself. Second, this light is perfect. We should take a quick picture.” She handed him her phone.
At least she didn’t ask me if this was my first high school party. Zuko extended his arm to take the photo.
“You’re getting much better at this!” Katara cooed after she reviewed the picture. “Okay let’s go.” Pushing the door open, she put her phone in her apron and took his hand to lead him inside.
“Zuko! Katara! You made it!” Haru grew out a mustache to complete his pirate costume.
He embraced Katara before giving Zuko a fist bump. A beat later, he laughed. “Nice. If anyone needs insurance, talk to these.
Katara squeezed Zuko’s hand. “Aren’t we so cute?”
“You don’t really give us a moment to forget, Katara.”
The smirk on her face probably meant something different to Haru than it did to Zuko.
It wasn’t flirty or cheeky. That smirk said our ploy is working.
And, that bothered him.
“Let’s get some snacks,” she tugged him towards the kitchen.
When she saw Katara, Haru’s mom’s face brightened. “How are you, my dear?”
“Good!” Katara let go of Zuko’s hand to hug her. “This is my boyfriend Zuko.”
“Nice to meet you, ma’am.”
“Nice to meet you.” Haru’s mom turned to Katara winking. “He’s polite.”
She giggled, “Stop it. Don’t be embarrassing. We’re just getting some snacks.” The handful of candy Katara took wouldn’t hold her for very long but Zuko didn’t point it out.
“Are you gonna get anything?” Katara asked Zuko, eating a gummy worm.
He shook his head.
“Are you ready to explore?” Katara put the price gun under her arm and placed her hand in his.”
“S-sure.”
She smiled, leading him through the Prakoso house.
It all felt nice. And, Zuko was sure it looked nice, too. The picture of the two of them holding hands, matching costumes, having side conversations.
It would look good until you got too close.
Like fake flowers.
“Ugh, I’d kill to have a relationship like yours. You two are like couple goals.” Pearlista said before wandering off.
“Yea, except it’s fake,” Zuko mumbled.
Katara stiffened.
Crap.
Holding his breath, Zuko let his hand go slack in Katara’s.
“Zuko, I—“
“Hey! Haru wants every one to take a group photo.”
“We should go,” Zuko tugged on Katara’s hand towards where their classmate pointed.
She didn’t protest, letting him lead her.
Every time Katara tried to start a conversation, Zuko blurted something out to steer it away from what he said.
After the photo.
During the pumpkin carving.
And, the dance-off.
“I’m gonna go use the restroom. Can you hold this?” Katara handed the price gun to Zuko.
“Sure.”
“Be right back.”
Katara didn’t squeeze his hand or his face. She didn’t even wink.
Oh no.
Fiddling with the prop, Zuko sighed.
I wonder if she’s mad.
The bass of the music swallowed his tiny groan.
I’m being sucha downer maybe that’s why she left.
Zuko ruffled the back of his head.
Agni, I’m the worst. I should go tell her I didn’t mean it.
His heartbeat was a little faster as he walked around looking for Katara. Spotting her white headband, he walked towards her.
“Ka—“
Zuko’s stomach clenched.
Back against the wall, Katara’s arms were crossed.
Jet leaned over her, talking into her ear. Their body language reflected years of comfort and familiarity Zuko and Katara still hadn’t achieved.
There was another smirk on Katara’s face. She opened her mouth to say something when she saw Zuko. She pushed past Jet, shoving his shoulder away from her.
“Zuko, I—“
“Katara, Jet called for her.
“I’m ready to go home. Please. If that’s ok.”
“Yea. Totally.”
She took his hand and sighed.
“C’mon.”
Zuko wanted to bring it up. It—his comment or Katara and Jet.
Of course, he knew their relationship was a set-up and eventually Katara would end up back with Jet. That was the plan.
But, Zuko drank the kool-aid Katara was serving.
They were cute together.
And he liked being with her.
He liked her.
Maybe Zuko never stopped liking her?
Why am I so shaken up by the two of them together?
He pulled up in front of her house.
“I had a lot of fun tonight.” Katara looked at Zuko.
“Good. Yea.”
Katara paused. “Thanks for the ride. Good night Zuko.”
“Good night Katara.”
What if Jet was apologizing to Katara?
What if she wanted him back?
What if that meant we’re through?
A sharp pain camped in his chest.
Jet looked like he belongs next to Katara. When have I ever felt that way?
Zuko stared at his bedroom ceiling.
The whole relationship’s fake.
Why is it such a surprise?
Somewhere along the way, the bubble had become solid. Fantasy is incompatible with reality.
Bubbles pop.
Solid things shatter.

Family Christmas
Aizawa x reader
He remembered when you first met... there had been a miscommunication between the police and a number of heroes including himself. The tension between the two parties had escalated to the verge of a physical fight between a few of the more outspoken members when he first became aware of your presence. You had been so calm and level headed and were able to sort through the mishap after only a few minutes of listening. He was impressed to say the least but was curious if it was attributed to your quirk. He soon learned it was just your personality and you were an informant for the police that came in for special cases. He saw you several times after the initial meeting while the case lingered unsolved much longer than anticipated but had little time to speak to you until one day you met him in the hall way upon his arrival.
“Ah, Eraserhead right?” Your big eyes blinked at him and a small smile graced your face when he nodded. “Here” handing him a coffee “ I wouldn’t go in there right now if I were you... they are being a bit... unreasonable right now. I’d give them a few minutes.” You then introduced yourself and briefed him on the new developments. He found you easy to talk with and your voice was soft, something he quickly figured out he really enjoyed. Over the next few weeks he learned more about you and began to share more about himself, by the end of the mission you had defended his absence during the day while he continued his teaching, he had confronted those in charge for over using your quirk for the case, and you both kept each other company and sane. As the mission had wrapped up he knew he had to do something or he may not get the chance to see you again with his two jobs and your work with the police, so he took action and asked you out before you had a chance to say goodbye. You had been surprised but that look had melted away and was replaced with a wide smile by the time he finished talking about the pros and cons of a relationship with him and how difficult it would be, him being a hero and teacher after all. You had been amused by his shock when you accepted.
That had been several months ago. Overtime you had both found a comfortable rhythm in your lives, spending as much time as he could spare together. He had moved in even though he lived in the dorms and looked forward to each time he got to come home to you.
You.
He loved you.
“Shouta!” He blinked owlishly and looked at you.
“Eh?”
“Are you alright? I’ve been trying to talk to you for a bit now” concern creased your brow. He hummed reassuringly. “Well we are almost there.... thank you for coming, I know it’s not something you normally like but it means a lot to me.” You smiled but kept your attention on the road.
Aizawa sighed through his nose “I don’t mind so much. Though I’d rather not have had to wear this.” A knowing smile crept up on your face as you glanced at your boyfriend, he had his hair pulled back the way you liked best and was wearing nice pants and a green Christmas sweater with cats on it. You were wearing a matching red one, both compliments of your mother. They had arrived in the mail a few days before and even though Christmas was still two weeks away you had both donned them for the early celebration your family decided to have.
“I appreciate you doing this.” You reached out for his hand which he gladly accepted and pressed a kiss to your knuckles before holding it in his lap. The rest of the ride was spent in quiet conversation and expectation. Shouta hadn’t met your parents in person before, only on video chats and phone conversations, and meeting them and everyone else for that matter, at a big family event wasn’t something he looked forward too. But here he was, in a car loaded down with presents and food, heading for your grandmothers house.
A few short minutes later you had pulled into a cozy neighborhood littered with nice houses and Christmas decorations. You squeezed his hand as you parked in front of one before turning off the car. Taking a deep breath he exited the car and carried the box full of presents while you carried a pan of food. He followed you to the door and nodded to some people you greeted that were hanging out outside. One person opened the door for you both and you were greeted with a shriek of excitement from who he recognized as your mother. She took the food from your hands and hugged you and calling your fathers name “It’s about time you made it! Now all we are waiting on is your aunt and her bunch and no telling when they will get here.” She ushered you inside and aizawa followed right as your father joined her. “Oh Shouta! You came! I’m so happy you are here. Look dear she brought Shouta! I was beginning to think she was keeping him from us!” Your mother exclaimed as the box he was holding was taken from him and he was pulled into a warm, and very tight, embrace. Your mom continued to chat about him meeting all the family and other things as your father shook his hand and patted his back. Your dads welcome was much shorter but equally as friendly full of pleasantries. After the initial greeting you managed to pull aizawa to you and away from your parents.
“Are you alright?” You asked him after a few more family introductions and awkward hugs for him “I don’t want you to get overwhelmed.”
“I’m fine... it’s not completely terrible and it only happens really once a year right?” You laughed gently and confirmed, leaning into him he wrapped his arms around you and held you while resting your foreheads together. Your quiet intimate moment was interrupted by the sound of camera and a flash. Pulling away from each other abruptly in surprise you found a cousin of yours grinning cheekily behind a camera before running off to take more pics. You sighed but smiled as Shouta hugged you briefly from behind and kissed the side of your face.
A bit later you had been separated from Shouta as you were asked to help get the food ready but your dad came to his rescue when he found him being questioned by some well meaning family about babies and marriage. Shouta has never been so relieved to be sat on a couch beside a man he scarcely knew and soon found that your dad was much easier to talk to than most others he had met. You had definitely taken after your dad in your quiet personality but you had your mothers looks. He smiled at the thought of you. Sitting back he was content in watching most the antics from a distance. He could see the young men of the family running around outside through the window and most of the women were in the kitchen.
“Hey, I’m going upstairs for a minute. All the kids are up there and I’m going to say hi and let them know to start getting ready to come down for dinner.” You had appeared near Shouta handing him a drink and kissed the side of his head. He watched you until you were out of sight before turning his attention back to your dad. When you returned he was listening to an uncle of yours describing a hunting trip he had been on. Shouta had mastered the poker face but you could tell he was dying a bit on the inside. You sat on the arm of the couch next to him and ran your hands through his hair. Immediately he turned to you and asked about the kids. “Oh they’re fine. The little ones have toys pulled out everywhere and some of the older girls are watching them. The oldest boy is really the only young boy of the family so he brought some friends from school and they have locked themselves in a room and are playing DND, i can’t believe he’s in high school now. I remember when he was born.” You stretched and then whined that these family gatherings make you feel so old now. Shouta pulled you into his lap and you both sat in comfortable silence as he laid his head on you and you curled into him. Even though the atmosphere around you both was pretty busy there was still a sense of peace. Your family had gladly accepted Shouta and the initial anxiety had worn off. He still felt overwhelmed but with you entangling your fingers together he knew it was manageable.
Or so he thought. Getting food was insane. Oh it smelled amazing and it started out easy enough. They had been asked to get in line and had plates in hand when the kids were called down. He never saw just one kid appear, it was as if a floodgate of children had been loosed. Plates were being held over heads, kids were screaming and running, crying over what food they did or didn’t want, young parents frantically trying to fill small children’s plates... did someone just throw food overhead? Once his initial shock wore off you helped him navigate his way through the line, watching where you both stepped. At times like these he was thankful for your patience and calm nature but he could tell you were getting frazzled. You ushered him to a table and went back for drinks. Sitting down Shouta sighed and ran his hand through his hair before picking up his fork and beginning to eat. The first bite had almost reached his mouth when a familiar voice spoke.
“Aizawa sensei..?” He looked up and froze. “What are you doing here?” Directly in front of him sat not one but three faces equally shocked, confused, and concerned. If he didn’t know better he would have thought time had stopped. It seemed to have slowed down as his thoughts rushed him, but before anyone could say anything a drink was sat in front of him. You placed your hand on his back as you sat down beside him smiling widely at him.
“I’m back! That was almost a nightmare” you took a bite and chased it down with a drink. Looking over at your boyfriend you quirked an eyebrow at the expression he was looking at you with “what? Are you ok?” He nodded then blinked slowly and turned to his plate. You watched him eat for a bit noting he was tense but not knowing why. You placed a hand on his leg and squeezed gently and looked over “oh hey Fumikage. I didn’t see you or your friends come down. How’s the game going?”
At first you were met by blank stares but then the boy next to fumikage spoke up. “The game is going well and the food is great, thank you!” You watched as one of his hands had morphed into a mouth and another pushing fumikage enough to break him out of his trance and he quietly agreed.
Nodding you ate a bit more then turning back to Shouta you said “this is my younger cousin I was telling you about and his friends he brought from school. Fumikage this is my boyfriend Shouta.”
“You’re dating aizawa sensei?!” The poor boy was so shocked and you choked on your drink. Coughing a bit you looked between Shouta and the kids and then you laughed, the awkwardness of the situation hitting you.
Wiping your eyes you apologized and attempted several times to talk about things with either Shouta or the kids but it was painful. Eventually when you were both done eating you pulled Shouta away asking if he was ok. After reassuring you that he was fine and it was just unexpected you explained to him about how the Tokoyamis were related to you. “The crow likeness runs on his dads side of the family and he’s related to us on his moms. So we have different last names. His dad had to work today but that’s his mom over there.”
It was getting close to time for the gift exchange and you couldn’t find Shouta. You had helped clean up after everyone was done with dinner and had sat down with your grandma for a bit. She had talked about her time with your grandfather and asked about Shouta. She was very approving of him from when she had met him earlier in the day and enjoyed your stories about him. But now the whereabouts of this man of yours was a mystery.
Heading upstairs you asked one of the kids if they had seen a man in a green Cat sweater with long black hair pulled back come up and they pointed to the door tokoyami and his friends had been playing dnd in. Getting close you could hear voices but they were too muffled to understand so you knocked quietly. Tokoyamis quiet friend opened the door for you to come in. He was a sweet boy but you had never heard him speak. Stepping in you looked to aizawa who was standing near the game table. “Everything alright?”
Everyone nodded at you “yes, we are just making a deal on not speaking about this l at school... or ever.” Tokoyami answered. You smiled but quirked an eyebrow at them as Shouta walked to you.
“Alright I guess, if it’s that important to you all. It’s time to open presents so if you want...” You were cut off by the three boys running past you. You laughed and linked hands with Shouta once again. “Come on let’s join them”
Downstairs everyone had made a place for themselves and you and Shouta found a place in one of the corners of the room. You sat with your back against his chest as one of your uncles became the designated person to pass out gifts. “My grandma really likes you, really everyone seems to like you but she really does.”
“You think so?”
You hummed in affirmation “yes. She also said you are very handsome and we will make beautiful babies one day.” He buried his face in your shoulder and you smiled knowing he was blushing. “You want to go home after this?”
“Sure, if you are ready.”
Gifts were exchanged, laughs were had, and Love was shared. Overall is was a great Christmas celebration but you were ready to go. You said your farewells and loaded up the car. The boys came down to see you both off having eased up with their teacher being around. You stood to the side as they reminded each other not to say anything at school, swearing it to each other.
“Hey guys! Over here!” All four boys looked in your direction to be met with a blinding flash. Both you and your same cousin with the camera smiled cheekily. “Thanks guys, I just wanted a pic of all you in your Christmas sweaters.” You laughed at the glares you got and finished saying goodbye.
Aizawa opted to drive home and held your hand as you discussed the days events. He assured you he enjoyed himself and wasn’t going to leave you for anything your family did. You laughed and rode the rest of the way home in comfortable silence.
You awoke to aizawa lifting you out of your seat and carrying you inside. He unloaded the car as you changed into one of his shirts and crawled into bed. Shortly after he joined you in just pajama pants “we don’t have anywhere to be in the morning so I hope you let me sleep in.” He said with one arm covering his eyes.
You watched him for a minute then leaned up and kissed his lips softly. “I won’t wake you, you deserve to sleep.” He hummed. “Unless you want to make beautiful babies.” You whispered against his lips kissing him quickly then rolling over and settling into bed. Shouta pulled his arm off his face and looked wide eyed at the back of you as he felt his exhaustion melt away being replaced by something different entirely. Running his hand over your side and kissing your neck you felt a low growl in his chest and knew sleep wasn’t coming anytime soon.
Rolling over you met him in a heated kiss
“I love you Shouta”
“Mmm I love you too”

The Charlotte Chapters- Part 2
Fast forward three years…
Now I am nineteen. A lot has changed, but mostly silly little things- I keep my hair long now, I have a “real” job, I occasionally go out on dates. Life is pretty good. I started to go to college. It wasn’t great, but I felt happy I was doing something productive with my life and continuing to learn.
Elliott and I are still pretty good friends. We’ve made tons of memories- he got his license as soon as he was old enough, and we always just went out on adventures. Our signature thing was going for coffee. And it wasn’t like a typical activity- we would spend hours and hours in the coffee shop, talking about anything. Just random things. And we’d go for drives- long drives out in the country because it was so peaceful. We enjoyed showing each other songs and playing them over the BlueTooth- singing along and relating to the lyrics.
He was honestly the best friend I’d ever had. But that’s about as far as it went.
I knew Elliott was interested- he would flirt, he would sometimes share how I made him feel. And I’m too nice of a person to simply turn someone down, especially when that person is my best friend. He did know I didn’t feel the same way- but hey, you can’t tell someone how to feel.
That was the year that I met Ross. He was the stereotypical good looking guy, at least in my opinion. Bright blue eyes, a chiseled jawline even… he took great care of his hair. Not to mention he played guitar. I was smitten. What college-aged girl could resist pursuing someone so promising?
In hindsight, I know that looks aren’t everything… they’re far from that. I wish I’d dug a little more deeper when making my decisions.
We met each other at the college’s “video game club”, as if I wasn’t enough of a nerd. I hadn’t made any friends yet, so I anxiously went on my own; I remember being quite proud of myself.
For such a geeky club, there were a lot of people that decided to join. There were probably thirty or thirty-five people gathered around, mostly in small groups chatting about video games, I assumed. The demographic was mostly male… I was probably one of the ten or so females.
I noticed Ross because he was also standing awkwardly by himself. He was on his phone- or at least pretending to be on his phone- in the far corner of the room. His brown hair fell down over his eyes. How could he see like that?
When he looked up from his phone, he noticed me. I don’t think I would have approached him- I’m not the type to do that. I probably would have endured the evening alone, and then I likely would have never gone back. But Ross boldly made his way over to me, where I stood right by the door in case I needed to escape in a moment of panic.
“Hey,” he greeted me, grinning an extremely handsome grin, “you a new student?”
“I am,” I said a bit shyly. “I’m guessing you are, too.”
“Yeah. Wanted to kinda at least try to be a little social, you know?”
Oh, I knew. I had to put on a persona for a while, see if I could fit in anywhere, and once I realized it was just going to be like highschool all over again I could retreat to doing my own thing peacefully- at least then I could say I tried.
“This club seems silly,” I said. “Why does everyone take these games so seriously? Like, we’re talking about Mario Party here.”
Ross smirked. “You’re funny. Hey, do you want to leave this place and maybe go for a coffee or something? On me.”
He certainly knew how to make good first impressions.
***
Somehow things progressed. We had a great first “date”, if you’d call it that. We chatted about lots of interesting things, and we got to know one another. You know how first dates work. I was extremely awkward, but apparently he found that to be cute. We got along really well- probably because I so easily agreed with everything he said- but really, for the longest time we never had any arguments.
He took a pretty busy college program, which didn’t allow him for a lot of free time. This was probably our first “bump in the road”. And I suppose when I reflect on it now, this is where it all went wrong.
A few months into our “too good to be true” relationship, I texted Ross asking if we could hang out. I hadn’t seen him at all in a week, and he only lived five minutes away. In my mind, it didn’t make sense to me. If he had homework, couldn’t we do it together? That’s a coupley thing. Sort of.
Can’t… I said I don’t have time right now, He texted back. Maybe next weekend.
This really bothered me- two weeks without seeing my boyfriend? I understand in a lot of cases this is perfectly fine… when someone is on a trip, when you’re living long-distance for whatever reason… in that case, the time apart is expected. But I didn’t sign up for this, not when we went to the same college and our houses were practically within spitting distance.
I honestly can’t say he was entirely to blame, because instead of voicing my opinion, I responded simply with a “K”. It’s passive aggressive and doesn’t exactly allow for constructive conversation. What was I expecting him to say to that? Ross left it at “K”, and we held in that anger, that frustration.
For a while, it was fine. I could live with some rocky times, some space from my partner. But what I couldn’t live with were the bottled up emotions- I was still mad about the fact that my needs weren’t being met. And whose problem was that, exactly? Ross was never there, but at the same time, I could have just spoken up.
But I’m not sure it would have made a difference- when my uncle Sam passed away, Ross was absent and clueless about how to help me. I remember we were sitting in my backyard, drinking iced tea and watching Youtube videos, when my mother interrupted our good times to announce the terrible news.
“Charlotte, sweetie, I’m so sorry,” Mom said, looking at me with tears in her eyes.
Uncle Sam and I had never been overly close, but I always found we had a lot in common- he was a foodie, a thinker, he loved to read, and he barely talked to anyone. Whenever we did spend time together I felt like I could just be myself, and he admired that. I’d like to think relatives don’t pick favorites, but I’m fairly certain I was his favorite.
I wasn’t sure how to respond. I was mostly shocked, initially, so no tears came. But I rested my head on Ross’s shoulder, in an attempt for consolation, and I’ll never forget the disappointment he brought me.
He got up. As he rose my head slid off his shoulder. As soon as my mother left, that is. He brushed off his jeans, flicked his hair to the side coolly. Checked the time on his phone.
“I have to get going,” Ross told me.
And then he went home.
His discomfort with the situation was more important at the time than my grieving over my dead relative. How selfish does a person have to be to think that way?
But then again, in the end I was the one being called selfish.
***
Losing my uncle was really hard on me. Never in my life had I lost someone close to me other than my grandmother, and that was when I was quite young and it’s difficult to remember. But at nineteen years old, I was old enough and mature enough to understand that Uncle Sam really wasn’t coming back, and all those things I wanted to talk to him about were never going to be a conversation.
I didn’t have many people I could talk to. My family I suppose was an option- but I didn’t want to talk about Uncle Sam to Uncle Sam’s brother (my dad). That would probably just make my father more emotional than he already was. And if I told my mother or my sister, they would relay it to my father… so regardless, it would make more people upset than necessary.
I figured going to a third party would be the best, most unbiased approach. Elliott was still around. We often still went for coffee, and spent time together, but for the most part we had our separate lives. I texted him to visit my apartment so we could have a couple beers and play some board games, catch up a bit.
I never meant for anything to be interpreted as more than that. Two good friends having a games night, chatting about what’s new in our lives.
Elliott pulled open the box of Monopoly, and I cracked open a beer. It was one of those “craft beers”- far better than a simple Budweiser or a Coors Light. At the time I felt pretty sophisticated. Pathetic…
I offered one to Elliott, and he waved it off. “Got any coffee?”
Many people, except maybe night workers and other weirdos out there, would not drink coffee at eight in the evening. It just seemed like a backwards thing to do. But Elliott and I could agree that coffee didn’t have an effect on us anymore anyways, it was just another tasty drink. A hot cup of coffee, now that was cozy anytime of the day.
I got up from my place on the couch to turn on the coffee maker. A random thought, but out of the corner of my eye I always thought my coffee maker looked like Darth Vader.
Sometimes I got bored living alone in my apartment, and my imagination went wild.
There was a catchy tune playing on the radio. In fact, I recognized it was by The Tragically Hip. Elliott was a pretty big fan of the band. I didn’t know the particular song, though… but the lyrics were rather interesting.
Hey there coffee girl
Beautiful and disaffected
It was perfect ‘till
He came along and wrecked it
One night he’ll make you choose
I’m sorry, but he will
The hardscape or your shoes
When the moon’s behind the hill
It sort of resonated with me- one night he’ll make you choose. I turned up the volume, kind of looked to see if Elliott noticed the song playing. As I predicted, he was looking back at me.
“I’ve been meaning to show you this song,” he said. “You listen to the lyrics?”
“Yeah,” I said. “I can kinda relate.”
I placed the filter, scooped in a few piles of dark roast, and pressed start. I really liked the sound of the machine starting up. It was peaceful to me. It meant coziness was coming.
While waiting for the coffee, I sat back down beside Elliott and we started the game. I wanted to be the hat, he wanted to be the car. My beer was good- this one had a slight citrusy taste to it. A little bit of a pop to my taste buds.
I realized for the first time in a while, I was having a really good time. Why was it that I could have this much fun with my friends, but I couldn’t find enjoyment like that with Ross? Maybe part of the problem was that I hardly saw him… but who knows.
I missed my friends. And I didn’t have a lot of them. But when I started dating Ross I started to forget who I was as an individual. I mean, I knew deep down, but it kind of got lost in the confusion that was “us”. We did things together, or not at all. I stopped seeing friends. Ross didn’t make me stop seeing friends, let me make that clear… but he wasn’t exactly an encourager of free spirit.
Spending time with Elliott made me think about all the good times I was possibly missing out on- I used to love going shopping with Alexis, I always had a blast playing video games with Brad, Mike, and Brock. But I think somewhere along the line that became “forbidden”... why would someone in a happy, loving relationship spend so much time with guy friends? Well, that logic used to make sense in my mind…
“So why did you want to hang out tonight?” Elliott finally asked me. “Everything okay?”
It was a fair question- I didn’t ask to hang out nearly as much anymore. If we did, it was strictly for coffee for maybe an hour. That was it. He had reasonable inquiries.
I moved my little top hat over five spaces. I think the coffee was ready. “You know, Elliott, maybe I just wanted to see you. Wanted to see how you were doing. I mean, things aren’t so well on my end.”
In hindsight, maybe it was a cry for help. I still wasn’t over the death of my uncle; my family was grieving; I was struggling with anxiety every day; and to make matters worse my romantic relationship was failing. That one person that was supposed to love you and be there for you unconditionally, had so many conditions. And I knew that just wasn’t right. So why didn’t I leave?
“So talk to me- what’s going on?” Elliott asked. I could see concern in his eyes.
“Well as you know, my uncle died a couple months ago. And I know we were never that close, but I kind of wish we had been. I really looked up to him. And you know, I just wish Ross would sit and listen to me sometimes. Not just talk about basic everyday shit… I want him to listen when I tell him about something emotional, something deeper than books or videogames or the weather. But he just isn’t around.”
Elliott kind of raised his eyebrows as if to say, I’m not surprised, but he didn’t say as much. He simply said, “uh-huh,” waiting for me to go on.
I was on my second beer now, and being the lightweight that I am, I was already a little buzzed. Buzzed enough where I was just comfortable and light, so I could talk about anything on my mind.
“I missed hanging out with you,” I confessed. “ I miss having friends, and having fun. I don’t like feeling so… trapped. I don’t understand why I can’t get out; it’s not like I’m under lock and key or some shit.”
“I don’t know either,” Elliott mumbled. He got up and started towards the Darth Vader coffee machine. Fixed himself a tall mug. It was one of my favorite mugs- it had cats all over it.
At some point I realized I had drank too much. I knew I was in good hands, but I had taken it too far. Drinking felt good, though. For me at least, it gave me this euphoric feeling. I felt like I could do anything, or say anything, and I’d be happy. And why would being happy be an unhealthy thing?
I’d also had a couple of coolers- some funky lime flavored ones. Who knows? I really enjoyed anything with the flavor of lime. Mexican food with a wedge of lime squeezed over top, some flavored sparkling water, you name it. Lime flavored coolers? Great!
I mean, I wasn’t drinking too much in the sense that it would have some serious adverse effects, but it was probably my choice of drinks that was unfavorable. Apparently sugary, fruity coolers didn’t agree with my stomach.
We’d played almost a full game of Monopoly, and now we were on to video games. I don’t think Elliott even liked video games, but hey, it was nice of him to pretend to be having fun. I think we were playing Super Smash Brothers or something like that. I suddenly had to vomit.
I tried to stand up and the room spun around me. My stomach churned.
“I’m going to be sick,” I mumbled, clumsily trying to make my way towards the washroom.
Elliott quickly got up to help me. He guided me to the washroom, as a decent friend- a decent human being- would do for someone in need. I leaned into him for support. We were almost there.
What’s funny is that we were ninety-five percent of the way there- we were in the doorway of the washroom- when I threw up. Elliott jumped out of the way. I had spaghetti that night. There were chewed up, spewed up noodles on the cheap bathroom floor. After vomiting I stumbled and fell against the bathtub. Elliott watched from the doorway; I think he was a little frightened.
I was fine- those particular coolers just didn’t sit well with me. It felt a lot better to expel them from my system. I slowly got myself up off the ground, and latched onto Elliott’s arm for balance. I recall him saying he was going to put me to bed now. I would be more comfortable.
I lay down in bed and Elliott put the blankets over me. I rolled onto my side and vomited once more, then went to sleep. Elliott went home.
That is honestly the story. Honest to God.
So why do stories get mixed up in our minds? And why do we allow others to do that to us? When I retell this story, to anyone, I have to convince myself that I did not sin here. I have to force myself to believe that I am still a decent human being. Why? I know the story. Elliott knows the story. I never would have cheated on Ross.
But you’d be surprised at how well words can get twisted sometimes.

“A Friend in Me,” Servamp
Summary: [AU - No Powers] Mahiru's not quite sure why he's so upset over his boyfriend breaking up with him. Lucky for him, he's got plenty of friends to stop him from getting too sad and no Licht, you don't need to kick his ass.
Pairing: Gen
Notes: (in tears) Why is this the first thing I write after three months why am I doing this to myself how did this even happen
AO3
Mahiru had known it was coming.
There had been so many arguments, so many fights, so many missed phone calls and missed dates that when his (now ex) boyfriend finally decided to call it quits, it had been a relief.
So why does he feel so sluggish?
He has a bucket load of chores to do—no thanks to his lazy roommate who never wakes up before three pm—and only until dinner time to do them. But Mahiru can’t even bring himself to sit up from his bed, let alone step out of his bedroom. It felt like it would take a herculean amount of effort to even consider moving.
Maybe his roommate was rubbing off on him.
‘Or maybe you’re just sad,’ a part of him says.
‘But why?’ Mahiru wonders. ‘I knew we were going to break up. It was inevitable. Thinking simply, we should have broken up ages ago.’
It wasn’t like he lost another family member. So why did he feel just as sad? Why did he feel like his entire chest was caving in?
He covers his eyes with his arm, unable to even look at his own darkening room.
From outside his room, he hears the familiar shuffle of feet and the clank of pots as his roommate meanders about the kitchen, most likely making himself a quick snack after waking up.
Dinner, he realizes. He has to make dinner soon. He’s the responsible one in the apartment. He’s the one who’s in charge of the meals and the cleaning so he needs to get up. He needs to pull himself together and—
A knock on his door. “Mahiru? Are you there?”
He can’t answer.
His shirt sleeve is getting wet and his throat clogs with shame.
Why is he crying?
Another knock, this time a little quicker. “Mahiru?”
“Sorry Kuro,” he manages to get out and prays to whatever deity will listen that his voice comes out steady. “But can you make your own dinner tonight? I’m not feeling well.”
The other side of the door is silent and Mahiru is suddenly, terribly afraid of Kuro opening the door. He doesn’t want anyone to see him like this. It’s embarrassing, it’s shameful and it’s so stupid but why can’t he stop crying?
Mahiru can only be grateful that he manages to hold back his sobs long enough to burrow beneath his blankets so the noises he makes can be muffled and drowned out by Kuro returning to the kitchen.
~~~~~~~~
Kuro’s not exactly the most terrible cook in the world but given the choice between his own cooking and Mahiru’s, he would choose Mahiru’s any day of the week.
But he has a feeling that wouldn’t be an option today.
So he pulls out the instant ramen, some pre-cut vegetables and a hard-boiled egg from the fridge.
It would be a gourmet instant ramen dinner, he tells himself as he turns the hot water dispenser on.
In the minutes between as he waits for the water to boil, Kuro lazily putters over to the living room, wondering what he should watch tonight.
On the couch, he spots Mahiru’s backpack.
It’s fallen on it’s side and half-open, several notebooks and Mahiru’s pencil case spilling out. That’s enough to make Kuro pause because Mahiru, born housewife he is, never leaves his backpack out in the open like this.
Kuro’s back at Mahiru’s bedroom door again. His hand hovers to knock. He can barely hear anything from behind the door but there are sounds—muted, indistinct but there.
“I’m not feeling well.”
Kuro doesn’t like it when Mahiru isn’t feeling well.
In the kitchen, the hot water dispenser beeps to tell him the water is ready.
Kuro’s hand falls away from Mahiru’s door and he returns to the kitchen.
He picks up the ramen, puts it away and gets the curry blocks instead.
Making curry takes more effort than Kuro wants to exert in the kitchen but Mahiru isn’t feeling well and there are some things even Kuro won’t allow himself to slack in.
“What a pain,” he mumbles to himself, without any real meaning.
~~~~~~~~
Mahiru doesn’t remember falling asleep but he remembers waking up when he hears knocking on his door again.
“Mahiru?” It’s Kuro again. “Can I come in?”
His throat feels sore, his head hurts and he knows his eyes are beyond red. Mahiru doesn’t want Kuro to see him like this but he still doesn’t trust his voice to not waver if he were to say anything.
He can only hope his silence is enough of an answer.
A pause.
“I’m coming in,” Kuro says and Mahiru would have screamed if he didn’t think he would burst back into tears again.
He shouldn’t be like this, not when he had already promised himself that he would become a reliable person like his uncle. How could anyone rely on him if they ever saw him this weak and pathetic?
Mahiru hears the door open and still unable to find his voice, Mahiru—cocooned in his blankets—turns defiantly towards the wall.
He hears Kuro make his way to the bed, quiet like a cat and without the usual lazy sliding of his feet across the hardwood floors.
Mahiru has a feeling Kuro isn’t slouching like he usually is either.
“Mahiru.” Kuro’s voice is soft when he calls out to him. It’s soothing and Mahiru wonders why, when he already hears Kuro’s voice almost every day. “Are you okay?”
Please leave, Mahiru wants to say but he can’t speak, still too afraid.
He can only curl further inside his blankets and pathetically wish to be five again when hurts could still be soothed by his mother holding him in her arms.
I just need to be alone for a bit. I’ll be fine Kuro, I promise.
It was a simple thing to say and it’d give him the space he needed and Kuro the peace of mind he needed to return to his nightly anime shows and video games.
But even the simple things had abandoned him and Mahiru can only respond to Kuro with an unwilling silence.
He hears Kuro sigh and Mahiru thinks, he’s gotten fed up, he’s going to leave now.
But Kuro doesn’t leave.
Instead, Mahiru’s bed dips inwards as another weight settles down on it and Mahiru nearly leaps out of his blankets, sadness briefly trumped by outrage because what the hell was Kuro doing in his bed but—
“It’s annoying when you’re always so energetic,” Kuro begins to say and Mahiru is both miffed and curious enough to keep quiet and listen. “But I can’t deal with you even more when you’re like this. Hurry up and let yourself get taken care of so you can get better.”
Oh, Mahiru thinks. He’s trying to comfort me.
The thought alone is enough to make the tightness in Mahiru’s chest loosen just a little. He hears Kuro grumbling and it’s close enough to make Mahiru realize that if he turned around right now, he’d be able to touch Kuro’s back.
Thinking simply, he wanted the comfort Kuro was offering him now. Therefore, he should take it.
So Mahiru turns and lets himself press his forehead between Kuro’s shoulder blades. There’s still the blanket separating them because Mahiru is still a little embarrassed but he likes to think that Kuro understands his gratitude in the way his hand grips the back of Kuro’s shirt.
“I really can’t deal,” Kuro says with a huff but there’s not an ounce of annoyance in his words.
Mahiru smiles beneath the blankets.
~~~~~~~~
The next morning, they have curry for breakfast.
Kuro grumbles out an excuse about them not putting his efforts to waste and Mahiru grins all throughout breakfast.
He even lets Kuro get out of helping with the dishes and watches the other slouch away to the living room with fondness.
Today, Mahiru doesn’t have class at his college, just his part-time job to get to in the afternoon so he busies himself with all the chores he didn’t do yesterday.
Compared to yesterday, he’s practically brimming with energy. He feels normal again and Kuro can see it too even as he complains that Mahiru’s being unreasonable as he’s forced to raise his feet off the floor so Mahiru can vacuum.
The background music and fighting noises that come from the TV as Kuro plays his game accompanies Mahiru as he finishes his vacuuming, puts out the laundry to dry and cleans the bathroom.
It’s just around noon when he finishes so he gets right to making lunch. He makes several of Kuro’s favorite, enough for dinner too for when he comes home after his shift and when Kuro sees this, he raises an eyebrow but doesn’t comment.
Mahiru’s grateful to Kuro for staying when he could have left so when Kuro asks about what happened yesterday, Mahiru answers.
“My boyfriend broke up with me.” With a clear head and energized from lunch, Mahiru almost laughs at how easy it is to say it. “It was inevitable, really. I don’t really understand why I was so upset yesterday, though.”
Kuro shrugs. “Not like it matters now. Better fish in the sea, or so they say.”
Mahiru laughs and mentally makes a note to make more of Kuro’s favorites for dinner tomorrow.
~~~~~~~~
The moment Mahiru’s out the door, Kuro pulls out his cellphone and begins furiously typing.
Mahiru may have felt better today but he had still been upset yesterday and that was reason enough for Kuro to get in touch with certain other parties.
~~~~~~~~
“You sure you’re feeling alright?” Koyuki’s worried tone clearly comes through even on the phone and Mahiru can’t help but smile.
“Yea I’m fine. Really,” he insists when he hears Koyuki begin to take a breath to—no-doubt—ask him for the fifth time if he was really feeling alright. “Kuro helped cheer me up last night.”
“Kuro?” This time, it’s Ryusei who speaks and Mahiru can practically hear the doubt in his words. “That chronically lazy roommate of yours who does nothing but nap and play video games?”
Mahiru muffles a laugh behind his sleeve, mindful of keeping his voice down in the store’s back room where he’s currently taking a break. “Yes, that Kuro. He’s a pretty good guy, once you get to know him.”
Ryusei mutters something too indistinct for the speaker phone on their side to pick up but it has Koyuki scolding him; Mahiru lets it slide if only because he has to get back to work soon.
“If you need to talk, we’re here,” Koyuki offers, still worried. Ryusei chimes in, seconds later, agreeing with Koyuki and Mahiru can’t stop smiling.
~~~~~~~
It’s nearing the end of Mahiru’s shift when Misono bursts into the convenience store, Lily cheerfully in tow.
“SHIROTA,” Misono all but shouts. “ARE YOU FEELING ALRIGHT?”
Mahiru almost falls to the ground, utterly caught off-guard.
“I’m fine Misono,” Mahiru carefully answers, almost afraid he was going to set Misono off if he said something wrong. “Why do you ask?”
“My brother contacted us earlier,” Lily happily explains, holding up his phone. “He says you weren’t feeling well and asked us if we could check up on you.”
“Kuro did?”
Lily nods and Misono looks ready to go into a long lecture about taking care of oneself when Mahiru’s phone suddenly starts ringing.
Surprised, Mahiru pulls it out of his pocket half-expecting it to be Kuro but his eyebrows furrow in heavy confusion when he sees the name on the screen.
Hesitantly, he accepts the call. “Hello?”
“Shirota,” is Licht’s clipped greeting. “Where is the person who upset you?”
Mahiru’s beginning to feel oddly out of the loop all of a sudden. “I’m sorry, what?”
“My shitty assistant just told me his brother texted him and said you were upset. Now tell me the name of the person who I must smite with my angelic powers.”
Mahiru splutters. “No one! There’s no one you need to smite Licht. I’m fine.” Here, he meets both Lily and Misono’s eyes. “Really.”
“I’m at the airport right now,” Licht continues like he hadn’t heard Mahiru. “I’ll be in Japan within the next day.”
“Don’t!” Mahiru yells into his phone, as if he spoke loud enough Licht might actually hear him.
“I won’t get caught even if the police try to stop me. Because I’m an angel.”
(In the background, Mahiru thinks he can hear Hyde cheering.)
He closes his eyes and begins counting to ten.
~~~~~~~~
In the end, he has to beg his boss to let him leave his shift early so he could focus all his energy on trying to stop Licht.
His boss agrees, probably because he saw how harried Mahiru was looking and decided to take pity on his hardest worker.
(Misono’s death glare probably helped too.)
~~~~~~~~
It takes a good hour on the phone plus Misono and Lily’s vouches that they would be looking out for Mahiru before Licht concedes and lets Franz drive him home (Mahiru hears Hyde whining in the background about wanting to go to Japan so he has a feeling he’ll be seeing Licht sooner than later). This, however, leads to Mahiru having to promise Misono that they would all spend time together this coming weekend at Tetsu’s family’s hot springs before he’s allowed to go home.
On the way home, his phone lights up with another call. This time, from Sakuya.
“Let me guess,” Mahiru begins once he picks up. “Kuro told you about the break-up?”
“Guess again~” Sakuya sings. “It was actually Koyuki. He was worried you were holding back on Ryusei and him so he asked me to call as I am your number one best friend. Now, how would you like me to sweep you off your feet, my beloved?”
Mahiru rolls his eyes at the theatrics. “I’d rather stand on my own two feet, thank you very much. And please don’t call me beloved ever again.”
“I’ll stop calling you beloved if you call me Sakkun,” Sakuya bargains and Mahiru rolls his eyes a second time but he can’t stop smiling. He can’t stop the giddy feeling that swells and balloons in his chest like something almost tangible that’s always been in reach.
~~~~~~~~
And when he returns to his apartment to be greeted by Kuro who complains about not finishing his game but still comes to the table to eat with Mahiru, Mahiru wonders how he could have ever been so upset when he already had everyone he needed by his side.
Haha soz
so looks like I haven’t done an update since Barcelona, which was about 15 months ago..
A shit tonne has actually happened since that trip, I will endeavour to give as much detail as possible, but I make no promises.
Here we go:
Olivia and I flew into Paris and spent the first day exploring Paris, which was amazing. We did the Eiffel Tower, ate pastries and of course, went and got macarons from Laduree. We lasted 2 days before we finally exploded and it resulted in me packing my bags and flying back to Edinburgh. Olivia ended up doing the rest of the trip by herself, which probably wasn’t terrible. She really enjoyed being able to do her own thing.
Edinburgh was a bit lame in those 2 weeks as Tristan was away on an army camp and Anna was away as well. I spent my days cooped up in Anna’s flat trying not to spend any money before jetting off to DC. I managed to kill a week (even though it felt like forever) and I finally hopped on the plane down the London before boarding another flight to DC where I did a layover in Iceland. It was a long, painful flight and I was so jet-lagged when I finally arrived into Baltimore Airport where Connor picked me up. Seeing him again was magical, I didn’t realise how much I missed him. We headed back to his place and I was trying so hard not to fall asleep. I felt awful because all I wanted to do was chat and sing and just enjoy being with Connor. We finally get back to his place and head out in search of food. I almost fell asleep eating my food, so we headed back to his place and I crashed around 10pm and Connor headed out to mates place in another apartment for a bit so I could get some rest.
The next few days he showed me around DC and we visited the monuments which we beautiful. I would love to go back some day and do it all again. DC was my favourite state in America (so far). After a few days with Connor, I jumped on a bus up to Philadelphia to visit Aunty Liz and Uncle Arthur for a week. It was amazing to see them again, and see their house and see what their lives are like. They live in a really nice, quant suburban area of Philly where they are surrounded by woodlands and little coffee shops. Their house was beautiful and it was great to catch up with William and Alex as well. After spending a week with Liz and Arthur, I jumped on another bus up to the next state; NEW YORK!
So wow. New York was next level! Connor and I were staying at a hostel on the edge of Central Park, it was alright.. I’ve stayed in better places, but for the price of it, we couldn’t complain. We spent our first day walking from our hostel (north west central park) through central park and down in the centre of Manhattan to walk through Broadway and experience the real New York. One of the nights that we were there, we even went to a Broadway show - MISERY. One of my favourite books by Stephen King. The main character - Paul Sheldon, was played by Bruce Willis which was pretty cool to see him doing some live play acting. It was such a great night! The next day Connor and I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and explored the back streets of Brooklyn. After quite awhile, we finally came across the hipster area of Brooklyn which was so cool (I did not feel cool enough to hang out there). It was full of guys with beards and top buns. It was surreal. I would have bought all the clothes if it weren’t for the fact that everything costed ridiculous amounts of money. That day was a lot of weeping, whining and window shopping.
From New York, Connor and I headed back down to Philly together to spend Christmas with Liz, Arthur and Alex (William was in the Canary Islands with his boyfriend). It was the most incredible few days, they loved Connor and Connor loved them. We all got drunk together on many occasions and spent our days playing board games and setting up the house for Christmas Day. After Xmas, Connor and I headed back down to DC for New Years where we ended up just spending it in his apartment getting drunk, dancing, and making ridiculous videos of ourselves! We spent the next few days just chilling, teaching ourselves to play guitar and eating amazing food. We rented a car and drove to West Virginia and it was the best road trip possibly ever. We sang and sang and sang. We stopped off at Shenandoah National Park and explored that for a bit. We eventually made it to Connors flat mates house, whose family we were visiting as there was a massive post christmas party taking place down the road. Holy shitting christ - this was probably one of the most surreal experiences of my life (other than the caving in Budapest). The house party we ended up going to was a lot of family friends gathering together in the massive, white estate looking house in the middle of bumfuck nowhere in Virginia. The wives were all perfect and the husbands.. well they weren’t so perfect. It was almost like stepping in the movie, The Stepford Wives. The children were perfection, we all got high, and they all sat around and sang beautiful songs and played instruments. Connor and I just sat back and enjoyed. It doesn’t sound like much, but you needed to be there to experience it. For them it was so normal, but my god, yeah surreal..
We headed back to DC the next day and headed onto our next destination, Boston. Now, I can’t really say much for Boston. Maybe it was because it was our last state on the trip, or because it was fucking freezing, I don’t know. But neither of us loved it. We visited Harvard whilst we were there and it was pretty underwhelming. I can’t even recall what else we did there - we did stumble upon this cool comic book store. But that’s basically it. (I couldn’t even tell you how long we were there).
I flew home after Boston, and the first thing I did when I landed was call Anna and tell her I was craving Wings, and then I texted Tristan and told him the same thing. 1 hour later and I found myself sitting in Wings with my two favourite people, in my favourite cafe, in my favourite city in the world. I couldn’t have been happier. It was great to catch up with them and just seeing their faces again were great. I hadn’t seen either of them in 6 weeks. It was great to see Tristan again and know that we could be apart for 6 weeks and still have the flame. Especially because we had only been seeing each other for 3 weeks when I made the decision to stay in Edinburgh for a further 6 months.
Tris and I had booked an AirBnB for my return as we wanted to spend some time together and celebrate our own little Christmas. We rented it up near Toll Cross really close to where Charlie was living. It was a really cute little apartment. I had gotten Tris a mug from the Friends store and he got me a copy of Child44 - my favourite book at the time. It was a lovely weekend with him.
I got a job pretty quickly at JLT - an occupational pension administrator company. It was lame as hell, but it paid the bills - well until Tristans mum asked me to move in with them about 4 months into Tris and I dating. I said yes and I was suddenly living cost free - which was great as Tristan had decided to come back to New Zealand with me in June. Not a lot happened in my last 6 months of living in Edinburgh. It was a pretty mundane lifestyle as Tristan and I were frantically saving for New Zealand and I worked a VERY mundane job. I saw the girls as much as possible, but after moving out to Dalmeny, it was pretty hard to see them most days. It was mainly in the weekends. I miss them all so damn much.
Tristan and I came back in NZ in June 2016, and we spent 2 months adventuring around the North Island and spending time with Mum and Nigel and then Dad and Drew. Tris had planned to only spend 2 months here as he needed to get back to Scotland for Uni and Army. I was OK with that at the time, and I am certainly OK with it now. I think I always knew that I didn’t see Tristan as a long term partner. Which is a shame - because I know that he saw me that way. I broke up with him about a week after he left. I realised that I didn’t miss him as much as I should have. Every time he called me, it felt like a chore to have to answer the phone and chat to him. So that was the end of that..
I got a job pretty quickly, working at Fisher Funds for a month covering a guy called Matt who was heading to America to visit his mum who was sick. The job was a crappy job, but I ended up making an incredible couple of friend through the job. Mainly - Helen. Helen has become one of my closest friends in Auckland and I don’t know what I would do without her. She is currently 6 months pregnant and I cannot wait to be ‘Aunty Elle’ and she has named me. I utterly adore her <3. Another couple of friends I have made from Fishers is Sarah and Matt. Both incredible and I love hanging out with all of them.
I last at Fishers for a few weeks but ended up resigning as there ended up being a bit of a complication as I outted them accidentally to the recruitment agency that Fishers was lying to them and avoiding paying recruitment fees.. so post that, there ended up being some bullying and I wasn’t going to stand for it, so I was OUT. I moved to Perpetual Guardian, which really wasn’t any better. It was a total bore - it was working in Wills, EPA’s and Trusts which could not have been more boring if i’d tried. Whilst working there, I got a call from Nuala from Hudson tell me about this new job at Network for Learning where I would be Admin/Receptionist in this really awesome tech company in Parnell. Well, you shoulda seen my face when I was offered the job after an interview the week before. I couldn’t have got out of Perpetual Guardian fast enough.
So,
Since June last year, Tristan and I ventured around the North Island together for 2 months, then I broke up with him a week after he left because I realised I didn’t love him anymore. I have jumped between 3 jobs since being back. I moved into Glen Innes/St Johns with Dad and Drew since being and home, and hopefully we will be moving again soon. Mum and Nigel live in Te Aroha and Olivia is killing it at The Raw Kitchen. Nothing overly noteworthy has happened over the past 10 months other than I now work at N4L which I love, living at home still, and am currently ‘seeing’ someone who I think is pretty damn cool. Hope he sticks around when he finds out how much of a weirdo I am.
Oh on a kinda exciting note: I have flights booked to Japan in August for a 20 days solo trip. Also, heading down to Dunedin/Wanaka for 6 days next week. Hopefully after that I will have some interesting things to talk about.
Ciao.
