Asagiri please please please I NEED A FUCKING CLARIFICATION on Beast!Kunikida, does the Azure King Case never happen at all or does the Azure King exist but was killed off early before Kunikida and the five police members could get to him????
This has no many goddamn ramnifications for Kunikida’s personality and his character arc. Both situations involve Kunikida never being traumatised or realising how dangerous his Ideals can become however Option A means we could have Kunikida himself being the Azure King and Option B implies that it was fucking Dazai who killed the King and Sasaki for Kunikida.
Would it matter at all, though, is what i’m interested in-would Kunikida ever even go down that route?? He has the Agency, more of a support system then the Azure King seemed to have and nobody to really encourage him down that pass. What would he be like without that hanging over him? Would Katai even join the Agency if they weren’t overburdened by missions and cases (Its always been a thought of mine that it was Katai who found where the King was and relayed it to Kunikida) and what would that look like?
There’s such a knockoff effect on Kunikida and I Want People To Talk About It!!!!

kinda wild to me that one of the most compelling aspects of both Chuuya and Kunikida's characters to me, that I never really see talked about, is how they're heavily set on a doomed crash course towards complete and utter destruction, and how I am so, so worried for them both.....
#bungou stray dogs#been thinking a lot about chuuya lately (shocking for me i know (said with no sarcasm truly lmao it is rare for me))#cause of the 15 manga and also playing the fucking jeht quest in genshin impact ugh (where's the one dual genshin bsd fan who Understands)#but like this pressure has been building up for chuuya for so long due to being used and manipulated by all these people#first the sheep then mori then verlaine then still mori now#he was groomed since childhood just like dazai#but unlike dazai he didn't have an oda to help him get out of the mafia........ he's still stuck there#and his personality is different from dazai's. dazai was more self-aware imo (but still a groomed emotionally abused kid don't get me wrong#but chuuya's whole thing is needing to belong and wanting a leader to be loyal to but ending up in positions of leadership himself#which makes him feel pressured but he accepts and stifles any negative feelings just because he wants to belong#and all this crushed him with the events in the light novels and yeah he went through character growth but he's...... Still In The Mafia...#and that fucking scene asagiri added to the cannibalism stage play i don't think hardly anyone even knows about bc IT'S NOT DISCUSSED ANYMO#where mori emotionally manipulates him with the flags!!! and it deeply hurts him!!! and he presumably deals with that shit all the time!!!#it is WORRISOME. it WORRIES ME okay.#chuuya doesn't have anyone who can save him from the mafia (dazai is in no position to okay; it's all he can do just to try to save himself#and it's so so scary. it spells awful things for him.#didn't asagiri say he'd have a rough path or something??? and he added that fucking scene in the play!!! it haunts me!!#i fully expected this shit to hit a turning point in the meursault arc but we can't have nice things i guess#and as for kunikida a;lskdfl (took me this long to get to him oop) literally the ending of Entrance Exam (the novel) is just#One Big Foreshadowing for Kunikida's downfall#he's compared to the azure king for a reason. Sasaki saw the azure king in him for a reason. it's fucking worrying!!!!!#there hasn't really been anything like that since in the manga (just like for chuuya lol ugh) but he's TERRIBLE at coping with his trauma#and it only gets more apparent once shit hit the fan in the doa/hunting dogs/meursault arc#it's not good!!! i'm worried for kunikida too!!!!#even if the manga isn't focusing on this these worries are always in the back of my mind man#both kunikida and chuuya are doomed to hit some kind of breaking point eventually and i await those moments with dread yet anticipation#i want dazai to be able to save kunikida from the despair being too good a person brings the way he couldn't save oda#and chuuya.... if we get a scene with him & mori mirroring the one in dark era where dazai finds out that mori orchestrated the kids' death#oh man i think i'll fucking die (give it to me i need to cry)

Been trying to write an analysis on Sasaki and the ending of Entrance Exam for days now and it just wasn't turning out so I deleted it... maybe another time when I can formulate a thought properly...
The only part I'll put here for now was the bit about my amusement with Dazai and Sasaki clearly near instantly realizing the other is a threat, which changed the way I read the scene of them chatting in the booth after she stayed the night. It probably boiled down to:
*sweetly smiling at each other* "oh this asshole has got to go"
Actually I went on an unorganized ramble in the tags so read that if you're interested in my Sasaki thoughts. Maybe I'll clean it up one day and make it proper.
#i've never seen anyone talk about her in depth so i thought it'd be fun; i really like her actually there was a lot of (wasted) potential#but my brain said no apparently#she has obvious implications for kunikida's character#but i wanted to talk a little about her dynamic with dazai and the paralleling between them#a seeker of justice who actually does not care much about justice and has no real personal ambition#merely acting in the memory of someone with much more strongly held values#she's also pretty cool i mean she has no ability and is quite intelligent#manages to puppeteer everything on her own simply through her skill at reading people and being selective with info#and yet is described as a puppet herself multiple times#and it was heavily heavily implied she wanted answers on what to do with herself and all her painful feelings towards the world#and dazai saw shooting her as 'kindness'#even as she was midway through telling kunikida#that she was happy when kunikida saved her even though it was all a set up#also i wanted to bring up how there's a really important difference between kunikida and the azure king#they're uncomfortably similar in some ways but very different in others#the point was that the azure king is to kunikida (if he valued ideals over people - the darkest path)#as sasaki is to dazai (if he'd been given no direction after losing his most important person - the darkest path)#it's more complicated than that and definitely not 1 to 1 but i stand by this interpretation#the main difference being that perception of humanity in self and others that is the running theme of this series#realized i paralleled a romantic couple to these two#does this count as kunikidazai lol#ugh anyways eventually i will write this i hope#storyrambles#also i know the point is that her and rokuzou died i know the point is the deaths were pointless#but what if she lived? what if she too got to find a reason to keep going in the face of grief and apathy?#and the continued conflict this could give kunikida too#something something the clash of different ideals of justice and how what is 'right' isn't so clear cut#but eventually he sticks to his belief that it is his ideal that no more people die if he can do something about it#this is so stupidly self-indulgent and an impossible scenario and probably i am the only one who finds it interesting but whatever#i think her living would've made things very very complicated but it's interesting to think about

I want to talk about one of the most terrifying and interesting bsd characters who almost no fan remembers.
This character nearly tore down the ADA without ever getting involved herself, yet the entire fandom has ignored her because of her terrible anime adaptation.
Who am I talking about?
Nobuko Sasaki
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you haven't read Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, then you probably don't even know who this character is, in the anime she is watered down to the lovesick girlfriend of an actual villain, and you probably dismissed her immediately. But in the light novel, we get to see how dangerous and cunning she really is, to the point she nearly gets the better of Dazai and almost causes the ADA to be shut down. (Fukuzawa says he would have closed the agency if they hadn't caught her)
In terms of intelligence I'd put her on the same level as Mori, just slightly below the super human genius characters i.e. Dazai, Fyodor and Ranpo
The Azure Apostle
For those who don't remember, Sasaki was the Azure Apostle, a mysterious figure who challenged the agency with several horrifying cases, which would all lead to mass casualties if the agency failed to stop them. These were; uncovering an underground organ smuggling operation (which the agency failed to stop and which massively hurt their reputation) stopping a bombing of Yokohama port which could have killed hundreds of people, and preventing a commercial aeroplane from crashing into the city (this was not included in the anime)
Each of the people, who committed these crimes, had no Idea they were being manipulated and thought it was their own idea the whole time. There was no evidence that anyone else had been involved at all, and the agency had no way to connect her to any of the crimes. And she even makes the genius move of framing Dazai, the mysterious new member with suspicious knowledge of the underworld and a hidden past, as the true culprit.
Tumblr media
In fact, she only made one mistake, challenging Dazai. If Dazai had been basically anyone else, they would have been cornered and arrested, but since Dazai's mind works on a level even master strategists can't imagine, he was able to turn the tables on her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But even after Dazai sees through her plans, the ADA still has to act exactly the way she wants them too and stop the plane crash. Even when they know they're being manipulated, they still have to do exactly what she wanted.
Finally, after Dazai and Kunikida confront her and get her to admit to being behind all those crimes, even then they are powerless to stop her.
Tumblr media
Even after being involved with so many massive crimes, Sasaki herself hadn't done anything illegal, so within the law the ADA is completely powerless to stop her.
Tumblr media
They can't arrest her, and if they try then the agency will be put in even more danger as will many innocent lives. She has completely trapped the ADA, and even Dazai in a choice to follow the law and let her go or take justice into their own hands and prove they will stoop as low as she did.
Tumblr media
In the end, there she has them in a perfect deadlock, let her continue her mission, or kill her themselves. Both are bad outcomes for the ADA.
In the end, Dazai has her killed by using a third party (Rokuzo) to shoot her, so the agency can't be blamed for her murder, though this ends her plans it deeply scars Kunikida and shakes his resolve in his ideals.
Tumblr media
The trauma from this event still haunts Kunikida to this day, we see that when he is affected by Q's curse, Sasaki is who he sees.
Tumblr media
So thats the Azure Apostle, a terrifying master mind who nearly brought down the Armed Detective Agency, but now lets look at the other side of this character.
Nobuko Sasaki Herself
We know several things about Sasaki as a character and her history from the light novel. That she was a brilliant criminal psychologist and was internationally recognised despite being so young
Tumblr media
,that she was the ex-lover of the Azure King and the real mastermind behind his plans, and that she had very little motivation of her own.
That's not meant to be an insult to the character, she says herself that she never really had much direction in life, even with her incredible intelligence she never really had anything she wanted to achieve.
But the Azure King was the opposite, he had powerful drive and strong ideals, he wanted to punish criminals who couldn't be touched by the law and when he failed to change the law as a bureaucrat, she offered him an alternative.
Tumblr media
A very important thing here is that neither of them were manipulating or forcing the other into this path, as far as we see they genuinely loved each other, each providing something the other couldn't, Sasaki her mind and the Azure King his drive.
When the Azure king died, Sasaki had no path of her own to follow, so she simply kept following his, even though she doesn't seem to have really cared about his cause.
Tumblr media
All of this creates a very unique character, you can't say she was driven by revenge, because she wasn't really driven at all. It's more like she was running on momentum, she had chosen a path to follow and could not stop even though there was nothing pushing her down it any more.
She's a perfect antithesis of Kunikida and was the best possible villain a light novel about him could have had.
A man who brings his ideals into reality with his own hands against a woman who uses others to enforce ideals that were never hers to begin with.
Anyway, I made this because Sasaki is criminally underrated in this fandom, If you haven't read "Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam" I highly recommend it, I've only put a tiny fraction of the amazing story here.

yall don't understand, when irl sasaki left him, irl kunikida coped by writing romantic (genre) poetry with irl katai. irl kunikida told irl katai about his vivid nightmares of murdering sasaki with a ceremonial sword he owned. then bsd gives us a world where kunikida and katai not only maintain their intensely tender relationship, but one in which they met at age 12. allowing me to then project onto them the extremely nostalgic and homoromantic kunikida short story My Sad Recollection of a Picture. most underrated ship of all time.

KUNIKIDA ISN’T THE AZURE KING, RIGHT?? RIGHT!?!?
I let it slide the first time I watched the series, but I subconsciously expected to get some sort of explanation for why the two characters looked so alike, but an explanation never came.
It’s not coincidental. Despite having his face covered, Bones made sure we saw the Azure King’s hair and eye color, and they match Kunikida’s EXACTLY. Even the shape of the eyes are the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And like, the whole episode, they kept talking about how the Azure King “lived by his ideals,” saying it numerous times. They talked about him the same way the ADA talks about Kunikida. We also have the similarities over his education and connections in government organizations.
Even down to the fact that Kunikida is drawn to and attracted to Sasaki, who was the Azure King’s lover. Down to the fact that she tells Kunikida, at gunpoint, “you resemble him.”
The Azure King and Kunikida even share the same Japanese voice actor. The irl Nobuko Sasaki was married to the irl Doppo Kunikida, but they divorced early into their marriage.
Was Kunikida the Azure King!?! I told myself he wasn’t, the first time I saw it, because I expected more information later, but like I said, we never got any.
I know I’m not the first person to theorize about this, but I just wish we knew more. The Azure King could just be an elaborate allegory for what Kunikida could have been, if he went down that path. But that’ssuch an excessively detailed allegory. Like why go that hard if it’s just a parallel?

[SPOILERS FOR LIGHT NOVELS] i don't think Kunikida was ever okay
so i was rereading the light novels and... yeah i don't think Kunikida's okay. bear in mind that these were either set before the start of the anime or were set before the end of season 1, so things such as walking alone, cannibalism arc and decay of angels arc had NOT happened yet (stressing this point as much as possible). i've also included roughly when in the BSD timeline the light novels were set and which pages i found the information on.
LN1 (s1e6 and s1e7 - azure messenger arc)
is absolutely terrified of the dark - i'm specifying the dark here instead of ghosts, which he specifically mentions in the anime, because he says he doesn't believe in them. but all the same, he's definitely not (keep telling yourself that, honey) shaking and crying (pages 24 and 25)
even at age twenty is willing to let himself die to save the other hostages - it says in the light novel that he is in fact suffering the effects of the poison gas, and still tries to save them despite Dazai and Sasaki stopping him (page 29)
made sure he still wouldn't have been able to kill Dazai - despite holding Fukuzawa's orders in high regard they would go against his ideals, which is why he never brought the real gun with him (pages 76-78)
the entire ending, pretty much - he had to watch both Sasaki, who he cared about, and Rokuzou, who he raised like his own son, die. he couldn't understand that there was no other way to do things, but since we don't know how his ideal came to be (seriously, Asagiri? nothing at all besides a couple vague suggestions?) we can't exactly push this point much (pages 95-101)
LN3 (set between s1e1 and s1e2 - where the Agency are planning Atsushi's entrance exam)
has what can only be described as a panic attack at the mention of a bomb threat (pages 4 and 5)
starts describing increasingly dark and oddly specific methods of torture to use on Dazai, whilst panicking and trying to attack something that isn't there (pages 16 and 17)
Kunikida and Katai's Brilliant Days (set around s1e6 - first part of azure messenger arc, but by this point Kunikida had not watched Sasaki and Rokuzou die)
sounds terrified at the thought of being called useless (page 5)
anyway that's all i got for now, will update if i think of anything else

One thing I love about Bungou stray dogs, are the parallels.
It's like this series is a mirror considering how many times people and events parallel each other.
Dazai and Akutugawa. Akutugawa and Kyouka. Odasaku and Dazai. Dazai and Atsushi. Kouyou and Kyouka.
Beast literally exists because Akutugawa and Atsushi mirror each other.
When we first meet Chuuya and get Soukoko in a room together. Chuuya remarks the sight Dazai "rivals a billion dollar painting."
And when Dazai first brings up the formation of Shin Soukoko, he's sat infront of a painting (and not any painting, one irl Dazai painted.)
The light novels 55 minutes and Stormbringer end battle mirrors the other. And 55 minutes starts on a ship and Stormbringer ends on one.
Kunikida screaming after Sasaki dies and saying "there had to be another way" and Dazai saying no there wasn't. And that same scene playing out with Fukuzawa and Fukuchi.
In the Anime the scene where Dazai learns Mori planned Odasaku's death. And the scene where Mori tells Fukuzawa one of his members will be transferred to the Port Mafia.
Both of these scenes with Mori sitting on a chair by the window are identical.
The search for Arahabaki = The search for the tiger.
Oda reaching out to grab Dazai and missing when as he walks away to face the assailants. Dazai doing the same when Oda walks away to face Guide.
Kunikida's warning Atsushi about helping Kyouka, and using the metaphor of a sinking ship. And than saving Atsushi and Kyouka from a literal sinking ship.
The Lupin trio toasting to the stray dogs. Atsushi and Dazai toasting to the stray dogs.
And many more, love that shit.

do not fuck with me when it comes to kunikida doppo . he is genuinely so kind and caring and compassionate and i think the fact that he used to be a teacher only adds to this, because he definitely comes off as the kind of teacher that is compassionate and cares abt each of their students individually. we can see this in the flashback shown in the ova where kunikida is speaking to katsura trying to get through to him. He might be blunt and might not always read emotions well but we are talking about the man who, despite knowing sasaki got many, many people killed, still wanted to see the good in her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
not to mention the fact that he actively jumped towards the girl with grenades around her neck, as though still trying to save her despite risking his life.

i just finished osamu dazai’s entrance exam and it was SO GOOD??????? in no way did the anime do it an ounce of justice
anyways, just like last time, here are some quotes and my thoughts
i love love love the way we get to really explore kunikida and dazai’s dynamic as partners in this light novel, it really helps the reader understand how they work together so well
"I'm impressed, Kunikida. Nothing gets by you, does it? Incredible." His smile is cold, inhuman. "I'm so glad you were my partner."
"What do you want?! Why did you threaten the detective agency?! What was the point of killing the missing people and setting the bomb?! You... You were..."
You were so talented.
I couldn't have asked for a better partner.
they drive me crazy i love them so much </3 in this scene kunikida is questioning dazai and threatening his life on the suspicions of dazai being the azure apostle, it’s the way that even though they had only spent so little time working together that they both felt they were good partners
i love how in the ln it’s actively a mystery for those who don’t know what’s going on, even as someone who watched the anime, dazai being setup was pretty convincing
the speech given at the end of it all by dazai to kunikida on the risks of following one’s ideals also carries a bigger impact than what was provided in the anime, it makes more sense
the way that sasaki is also a genuine love interest of kunikida’s is also so heart wrenching, her last words really just hit hard
here’s something i found so sweet
"Hello, little one. Can you hear me?" Dazai takes over the call.
"We here are airplane experts. There's nothing to worry about anymore. We're going to fix the plane. What's your name, little miss?"
"Ch-Chiyo..."
"Chiyo, everything's going to be okay. Got any snacks with you?"
"Mommy gave me this piece of candy..."
"Candy, huh? I love candy, too. It's so sweet, and it really helps you relax, doesn't it?"
"Dazai—"
"I've got this... Chiyo, first, I want you to really take your time enjoying that piece of candy. After that, I'm going to need you to take that device you're talking into and bring it to the captain's room. Do you know where the captain's room is?" Chiyo nods, wiping the tears from her eyes.
"Don't worry. There's nobody screaming in there, and I bet your mommy will be feeling better in no time."
"B-but I... I can't go alone. I can't leave Mommy behind..."
"Your mommy's gonna be just fine. The pilot will make things all better. So I'm going to need you to take that device to their room and give it to them, okay?"
"Well, this is just no good. I'm quite weak, you see. A big guy like yourself would snap me right in two... But I promised Chiyo I would save her."
THE WAY HE TALKS TO THE LITTLE GIRL WARMS MY HEART AND MAKES IT ACHE AT THE SAME TIME HE HANDLES IT SO WELL AND THE WAY HE WANTS TO KEEP HIS PROMISE UEUEUE
I tear the stitches off my hip pocket and pull out a sheet of paper.
"...I always have a spare page with me for emergencies."
I unfold the paper and write with my own blood.
"The Matchless Poet: Release Key!"
here’s kunikida just being cool i love him sm i love my wife
here’s some silly ones
"It's this incredibly rare book called The Complete Suicide. I've been searching all over for it, and I just noticed it on display in the used bookstore back there — Ah! I have to go back and buy it before someone else does."
Nobody asked.
"Tsk... Guess I'll just have to come up with another way to use you as bait. I bet the criminal targets tourists. All right, Kunikida, slip on your rubber boots, throw on your backpack, put on your red-and-green-striped shirt, and start walking the town in your knickerbockers. Make sure to bring a giant camera with you to take pictures of everyone who walks by and say 'eh' at the end of every sentence."
"Like hell I will!"
""Like hell I will, eh!'"
"You call that a strategy? That's a terri-"
"A terrible idea, eh?'"
"Stop guessing what I'm going to say!"
"Hmm? In that case, how about you get naked, put on a top
you like?"
hat, and ride around on a unicycle screaming what kind of girls
"We're not even talking about the same thing anymore!"
all in all i highly suggest you read osamu dazai’s entrance exam i promise it is so worth it <3

I’ve been trying and failing for so long to cohesivley articulate my Azure King + Kunikida thoughts to the point where this is going to be an incompetent mess but i really do think that the entire Azure King and Apostole Incident were like, the Defining moment for who Kunikida was, is and will be.
His character revolves so strongly around the Azure Incidents because its his fixed point in time, his two mini Dazai-Oda moments. Thinking about how his two light novels Magnificent Days and Dazai’s Entrance Exam were focused on the before and after of the Azure King’s death. And the novels themselves! “Kunikida and Katai’s magnificent days” Love and intimacy, a shared, sheltered world, a decade worth of friendship. The story takes place mostly with just Kunikida and Katai, inside one cozy house.
And after the Azure King’s death you have “Osamu Dazai’s Entrance Exam” like a work report title. Cold, militaristic. Missions, strict schedules. Beginning in death and ending with death.
The tone shift from the gentle, domestic Magnificent Days to Entrance Exam feels so daunting because you can almost sense how neurotic and hurt Kunikida is over even accidentally getting people killed. Its that loss of control that made him so stiff.
How Kunikida can’t even wear blue because of it. How Sasaki still haunts him years down the line. How the anime made it a deliberate choice to have the Azure King looking similar to Kunikida. Red string of fate except it’s the blue of corpses. “Traitor to their country”

some more genderbend hc cause you guys enjoy it hehe
Fem Dazai:
- 176cm
- 15-22 long long hair but after the prison arc, she cuts her hair to a messy short “wolf cut” because her hair was poorly taken care of at prison
- Fem Dazai is a master at manipulating her emotions including her tears. She has the most angelic crying face
- There’s a saying in the port mafia that the men Dazai lock arms with never return alive🤫
- (Femskk) IMAGINE they are at a ball and they need to identify a man and kill him once the ball is over. Dazai spotted him in an instant. She kissed him and danced with him, leaving a lipstick stain on his cheek. Then when he’s alone, Chuuya saw the lipstick stain and she smirks. The lipstick stain was Dazai’s “mark” on her soon-to-be-killed target. Like I mentioned before, I doubt Dazai does the dirty work
- Dazai gets free rides in cop cars because she has a thing for men in uniform
- Dazai wears the ugliest PJs sorry.
- Fem Dazai definitely has a mommy voice
- Men pay for her meals outside
- Pretty When You Cry by Lana Del Ray is HER song
- she changes boyfriend every month, Kunikida accused her of trying to date every men in Japan
Fem Atsushi
- her PJs are uglier
- 165cm
- all her makeup is expired and broken and she wear hand-me downs from the other girls because she feels guilty for spending on nice things for herself :(
- Dazai brought her to do her nails once and she loved it so much but she broke it in two days
- BUT she loves Hello Kitty, she has a shrine of it in her room
- Atsushi volunteers at a nearby orphanage and the kids love her
- I imagine Atsushi having a gentle and soft voice
- Atsushi would see a group of female students and wish that she has a friend group like that
- Atsushi never wore crop tops because she doesn’t want to show off her scar on her torso until Akutagawa kept slicing off her clothes in battle (wink wink) then she stopped caring about her scars
- Out of all the girls, I think Atsushi has quite a toned body, she has abit of muscle
- Atsushi feels embarrassed that she eats a lot but the girls reassured her and said it’s fine (at the expense of Kunikida’s wallet)
Fem Kunikida
- 180cm (tall mommy)
- the exact same as her male copy lmao
- has never been in a relationship before. She gets damn red whenever a man flirt with her
- she looks different with her hair down and without her glasses, she’s a beauty
- men are intimidated by her height😤😤
- Nobuko Sasaki is 174cm and he’s the only guy who found Kunikida’s height beautiful
- Whenever Dazai gets into danger and comes back alive, Kunikida would run up to her (slap her hard) before engulfing her into a tight hug which is reciprocated hehe
Fem Ranpo
- 158cm (someone short than Chuuya??)
- she’s really cute and she looks way younger than male Ranpo
- she usually has her hair down but on special occasions, she adorns two braids with flowers in them (curtesy of Poe)
- she’s unaware of her surroundings most of the time. She would manspread or lie in the floor indecently even if there’s a man around. Fukuzawa reprimands her for this but she still does it
- she’s quite tiny even if she’s around the same height as fem Higuchi
- side eyes and roll her eyes A LOT. Fukuzawa scolds her for this too but she still does it
- she’s like an insect, she’s super hard to hold in one place
- she smells like cotton candy and all those sweet stuff
- got her period once when she was 16 and never got it again LOL Fukuzawa is concerned
- she gets people to carry her princess style
- she loves dolls
- Ranpo has soft features so she really looks younger than her age but she has notably very gorgeous eyes and long lashes
- she doesn’t wear makeup (she tries but she doesn’t know how to)
- made many grown ass men cry before
Fem Chuuya
- I’m a firm believe of big bust Chuuya. Sorry. Gravity defying boobz
- has long hair but she tied it into a ponytail using a brown ribbon
- 153cm…but she wears 10 inch heels…she has never worn flats except for when she was 15
- she changes her collar frequently
- wears red lipsticks
- wears the most revealing clothes during non-office hours but her sense of style is amazing
- her hat is bigger than male Chuuya’s
- was a tomboy before Kōyō “fixed” her
- fem chuuya laughs easily and she has the ugliest laugh ever. She snorts like a pig. Dazai and her use to laugh like pigs together
- FemSKK! Once, Kōyō was putting on make up for 16 year old Chuuya and Dazai for a mission to attract some men but nobody was attracted to Chuuya and they all went to Dazai. After the mission, Chuuya got pissed and told Dazai she felt like “lipstick on a pig”. Dazai wipes off the lipstick on Chuuya’s lips with her thumb and smiled while saying “ah you don’t need makeup. I love you just the way you are.” (Ref to beast) Chuuya got even more pissed
- I’m sure Chuuya wears pants not a short skirt because it’s more practical
- MANEATER OF THE PORTMAFIA!
- Queen of the sheeps and queen of the night.
- I can imagine men shrinking in fear whenever she says “what do you want”
- has a secret love for romantic novels/shows
- I got a feeling she has a random crush on some idol/celebrity and would fangirl in secret
- she has a walk in closet filled with shoes.
- “why do you have a billion pairs of shoe for one pair of feet?”- Kajii
- Dazai and Chuuya speak many different languages. They dated international people before

Dazai Osamu x reader
💌 Reading into the palms of isekai bullshit:
Chapter 3 💌
Summary: You were no stranger to isekai bullshit. It’s not like you had a problem with it. The genre took over the anime scene for years now but you try to stay away from thinking about how you would handle the situation. The last time you thought about inserting yourself into your favorite show you wrote a 100k word xReader fic for your favorite characters and you didn’t want to spend all your time consumed by the brainrot again. Never again, you promised yourself that was the last time you’d let the devil on your shoulder win. You clicked on chapter 1 to start the adventure over again but when you opened your eyes and saw Dazai O-FUCKING-samu getting choked by Kunikida you honestly hoped it was a dream.
Notes: Another isekai so I can play around with BSD like dolls.

Aside from the raid on the agency and fearing being shot to death the next few days turned out okay. You had a few scraps on your arms and legs from the broken glass but other than that you were right as rain. While Atsushi was going with Ranpo, Kunikida wanted you to stay behind to help reorganize the files with him.
"I wanted you to stay behind because tomorrow you're going to escort Ranpo to Kyushu." He took another file from the stack you were holding. "You still have amnesia but it's clear your talent for palm reading could be useful for detective work. It's not Ranpo's ultra deduction but he should be able to help you get a better grasp of it."
You stiffened. You hadn’t thought of that. The next few days they would be handling the Azure Messenger. Which was a mess you'd gladly skip out on but the anime didn't follow Ranpo to Kyushu and you don't recall reading about it either. You'd have no idea what was going to happen. This isn't good but you can't refuse the order. Realistically it was sound logic but you were going to disappoint Ranpo with your clear lack of talent. Oh boy. You were dreading the experience. On the plus side with you gone Dazai could still offer his space to Sasaki and by the time you guys got back you’d finally have your own humble abode.
By train it would take several hours to make it to Kyushu from Yokohama. You were not looking forward to such a long journey especially with Ranpo. Sure enough it was only three minutes into the first train when the other announced that they were bored. “Well, did you bring a book or something?” you asked hoping he had the foresight to plan his own entertainment.
“I did but it was boring. It’s no fun when you can already guess the ending. They made it so obvious too.” he was flailing his arms before he settled to look out the window unamused and slightly irritated. You sighed, you brought a book too or well Dazai handed you a book. “The Complete Guide to Suicide.” You didn’t want to read it, not because the subject matter wasn't interesting, you just would rather not know but you were curious about Ranpo’s book. The moment you tried to grab for it he turned to you “It’s the sister, she lied about her condition and wasn’t even at the hospital. She and the doctor were in cahoots.”
You frowned “You know that’s not going to stop me from reading it right?” He rolled his eyes, pulling it just out of reach. “I know, how about you entertain me!” his smile sparkled with intrigue
You raised an eyebrow “What you want me to tell you a story?” That wouldn't be so bad if you could just talk about another of your favorite anime. What were the odds they existed in this reality? Ranpo hummed “Not exactly. I want you to read my palm.” he practically shoved his hands in your face. “Well what do you want to know?”
He shrugged, “I don’t know, what can you tell me?” He seemed genuinely curious. Kunikida must have told him about your “talents” otherwise he probably wouldn’t have bothered. You grabbed his hands scanning over them before saying “Originally you’re not from Yokohama but you did go to the Yokohama Police Academy until you were kicked out because you exposed the warden. You met Fukuzawa by chance while you went to pick up your work permit. He was the one who gave you your glasses.” You paused to look up at Ranpo. Shockingly he opened his eyes to stare at you. He didn’t look off put nor did he look surprised but there was this secret third thing you couldn't place. You continued as you matched his eye contact “You don’t need the glasses to activate your ability but it does make it easier for you to shut it off should I go on?” You were not sure how much more you could say at this point. With the way he was looking at you you might have said too much already.
“You don’t actually read palms.”
Shit, he saw through you.
Hesitantly you laughed “What makes you say that?” your stomach drops when he tears away a thin layer of skin from his palms, it was a prosthetic. He came prepared. “Because it wasn’t my palm you were reading. So how did you know that?” Ranpo doesn’t move to pull out his glasses nor does his expression change but he continues to stare at you. A bead of sweat drops down the side of your face. Ranpo saw right through you from the beginning. WHAT DO YOU DO!? How did he know?
“I found it weird that Dazai wanted me to mask my hands. He had made a copy of his palm a few days ago saying he wanted to test your talent again. Kunikida said that when you first met you were able to read Dazai’s palm, with that being the case it confirmed it wasn’t a special ability.” He discarded the fake skin, throwing it into his bag. When he turned back to you he seemed perplexed with the new information. “If you actually read palms you should have recognized it was Dazai’s immediately. Instead you gave me information about myself that only one other person would know.”
You sighed cat’s out of the bag you guessed. Should you just come clean or wait to see what Ranpo speculates? You sighed just when you thought things were going smoothly. “I should have expected as much from Dazai and here I thought we were finally getting along.” You shifted awkwardly in your seat to face Ranpo more. You were about to tell him when his eyes widened suddenly almost like a realization hit him. “You’re not from here,” he trailed off, finally closing his eyes “(Hometown name), right? But how did you end up here?” He relaxed back into his chair. You wonder how he figured it out but you wouldn’t doubt it had to do with the state you were in that night at the warehouse. “I wish I knew. The last thing I remember was falling asleep reading my favorite manga and then I woke up in the river. To be completely honest I thought this was a dream so I thought it would be funny to mess with Dazai a little.” you scoffed at yourself “Really stupid idea thinking back on it, but you know,” there was no way this was going to work. You had another stupid idea. “Since you’re the only one who knows if you ever wanted to mess with Dazai this would be the perfect opportunity to finally pull one over on him. Obviously the choice is yours but I’m just saying there would be no way for him to figure it out on his own.” You watched as a devilish grin formed on his face.
“I’m listening.”
“If you keep my little secret I’ll answer any questions you have plus be your snack gofer for a week. Oh and get you all the shiny marbles you desire.” This entire venture was hinging on the fact that Ranpo loved snacks. You only assumed it would be amusing to watch Dazai fumble about his original accusation. Dazai was never wrong and you knew that was one of the reasons Ranpo doesn’t like playing chess with him. So you figure it would be fun to watch Dazai have to reconsider his approach and strategy to gain intel on you. Watching Ranpo mull around the idea was a good sign. It meant that he was at least interested. In which part you didn’t bother asking.
“Eh, good enough for me!” He reached his hand out for you guys to shake on it. “So how’d you know about all that?”
You smiled “Oh the Armed Detective Agency is a part of my favorite manga” Before he could ask you added “Yes, you are my favorite character. How could I not love the world's greatest detective.” He seemed pleased with himself as he dug out some snacks from his bag. He started munching on some chips not even bothering to finish the ones in his mouth as he asked “So then you know what happens already, isn’t that boring for you?”
You hummed “Not really, the story didn’t follow you to Kyushu so this is all new for me. Oh but Kunikida and Dazai will call you in a few days to ask for help solving their case. Which is completely different from what happens in the light novel but I’ll spare you the details.”
“Interesting, so then you already know what they're going to ask and how to solve their case.”
“Technically yes, but I’m not sure how much of my actions will alter events in the future so I’d rather not say anything until the time comes.”
“Let me get this straight, you already know what’s going to happen and you’re just going to watch everything play out as it should, that’s so lame. How boring.”
You let Ranpo roast you for your decisions to stay out of the plot. At one point he scoffed at you saying that it was no wonder even though he ruined the book’s ending you still wouldn’t mind reading it. Eventually he started playing a new game where he would try to guess events that happen in the future but you didn’t tell them when they would take place. You also weren’t entirely telling the truth about some of them either but it was not like he was guessing important plot things. It was mostly ridiculous things, like side story tidbits that would happen in “Bungo Stray Dogs Wan” This seemed to keep him entertained for a while but eventually he got bored of that too. Luckily you arrived at the station before he could come up with another game. Although he put you to work immediately wanting you to fetch him more snacks and ramune. You almost regret making the offer.
In the end it would all be worth it to keep your cover with Dazai. On the next train Ranpo was too enthralled with his sugar haul to pay attention to you so your mind wandered to a certain waste of bandages. You had taken out a notepad to scribble and doodle on to pass the time. You lied to Ranpo earlier about him being your favorite character. It was Dazai. You might be a little too into liking the stupid brunette but honestly you just wanted him to be happy, to finally feel loved without thinking he doesn’t deserve it. You must have had a dreamy look on your face or something because Ranpo looked at you with disgust. “Don’t tell me you have a crush on Dazai, that’s just gross.”
You tilted your head at him “Huh?” He pointed at what you were drawing. You had drawn a collection of chibi Dazai’s all over the page. Oops you didn’t realize what you were doing. “Oh yeah, ew gross.” You tear the page out and crumple it up. Throwing it away at the first opportunity to destroy the evidence.
He laughed at your actions but didn't say anything else. When you finally arrived in Kyushu they had an escort waiting for you. Apparently your client had set up accommodations for you both. You were going to meet with them tomorrow once you’ve had time to settle overnight. During the brief you weren’t much help as expected and once Ranpo got started the most he needed you for was to fetch him refreshments as he looked over evidence. It didn't take that long to crack the case but the amount of paperwork that needed to be done was insane. All because he was from outside of Kyushu. No wonder it took three days total to finish up here. Two days were just traveling and one day of mostly paperwork.
Just like you predicted on your last day when you and Ranpo were walking around he got the call from the others. He didn't bother asking you anything assuming your passive view on the situation means you wouldn’t help but you also think it was a matter of pride. He rolled his eyes at you because he had to do all the work and maybe that’s what it really came down too. He made you get more snacks than you could carry making you more of a pack mule than a gofer. When you finally got on the train he made sure to give you an earful that he'd let it slide this time but as your superior if you knew what happened next you were to report to him about it so he doesn't have to lift a finger. You're actually not sure how serious he was about the demand. All in all it was a successful mission. It was getting late by the time you made it back to Yokohama but you still checked back in at the agency to be updated on what went down when you were gone. Not like you didn’t already know but it was nice to be kept in the loop.
Making your way back to the dorms you realized that no one gave you the keys to your room. It should be ready by now. You assumed it's because Dazai was holding them hostage. At least since no one mentioned it you figured as much. They think you two were very close it seemed or knowing Dazai he probably outright asked to do the honors. You moved to knock on his door but the moment you did it swung open. He was standing there jingling the keys in front of you. A satisfied grin plastered on his face. "My darling (Y/N), what a pleasant surprise! Could you perhaps be looking for these?"
You rolled your eyes trying to grab for the keys but he pulled them away before you could touch them. “Yes, yes very funny but I’m not in the mood to play right now. I had to entertain Ranpo for several hours and would like to get some sleep.”
He smirked knowingly, "Hmm funny you should mention Ranpo, I ran into him earlier! I don't know, maybe care to explain this?" He held up a wrinkled sheet of paper. It was the one you drew all over on the train. Goddamnit Ranpo, why? "I thought I threw that away." You could practically hear Ranpo's smug tone saying,
"I said I'd keep your secret but I never said which one."
That bastard probably went through the trash to have this blackmail. This was probably payback for making him do all the work, but he said he’d let it slide. You've been played. You needed to think of something quick "I mean to be fair I drew everyone but I had a hard time getting you to look right, like what is even going on with your hair. I bet it'd be easier drawing the slug’s weird ass hairstyle."
He shifted his weight back on to his other foot. "Is that so, then you won't mind if I keep this?" It seems bringing up Chuuya to change the subject wouldn't work a second time. Oh well, it was worth a shot.
"I already threw it in the trash. Be my guest." You grabbed the keys from him checking what number your room could be found at. Just before you left you pivoted to look at him "Oh one more thing. What did you plan to accomplish with that little stunt of yours?" Obviously it was a big question on your mind. Now that you didn’t get the inner monologues or the outsiders view you have no idea what the other could possibly be thinking.
"That was just to keep you on your toes my little belladonna~"
You huffed “I sincerely doubt that. Why would you go through all that trouble?”
“Aw, and here I thought you trusted me?” He dramatically clutched at his chest with a soft whimper as you laughed at his antics. “I can trust you implicitly but still question your motives. It’s not like I pledged my blind loyalty to you like some kind of a dog.” You were about to leave for real when you realized what episode you should be around. “Oh that reminds me, you plan on going out later right? You should say hi to your cute dog for me.” He narrowed his eyes with a slight frown “So you can see the future.” his tone went flat causing you to smile.
“Fortune telling is not an exact science but sometimes it’s used to predict the future, yes. The least I could do is try to keep up with you, my little white snake.”
You could hear Dazai stifle a laugh as you started walking away. It was proof that he got your joke. At least you were hoping that it was because he got your joke. You really tried but there wasn’t a lot of clever word play at your disposal. There was a plethora of double entendres for feminine but not a lot for masculine pronouns and you weren’t about to say the scientific name for white snakeroot, “Ageratina altissima” because it’s one hell of a mouth full. Essentially it meant something akin to “The unaging tallest” not as flattering as “beautiful lady” but it was still a poisonous plant and human descriptor so it was close enough to say you tried to put in the effort. Part of you thinks it was better than giving him any real compliment. You feel like Dazai likes the ambiguity that comes with the chase. So why not play the game?

Dazai played a role in the deaths of the Flags
SKL I'm kinda feeling low rn but I'm going to write this anyways. (cause at least maybe it might make me feel better to do something interesting TT). ANYWAYS.
some time ago, I came across a discussion in another platform about whether or not Dazai 'killed' the flags or had a role in doing so. and a lot of people were saying that Dazai is innocent of that?? I personally disagree and here's why.
"Everything. Verlaine's targets, the detective, the researcher - it was all based on the information I gave Verlaine. In other words, the system he used to assassinate people was my system too (. . .) I did it to buy time before Verlaine reached his final target. His final target is Ougai Mori, the Port Mafia boss. Normally, he would've been the first to be assassinated but after manipulating the intel a bit, I got him placed last in line. And thanks to the time I bought, I'm ready to assassinate Verlaine instead. Just need to make a few final touches (. . .)"
--- Dazai, Stormbringer
I think this quote can explain itself. But to break it down a bit, Mori was originally Verlaine's FIRST target. However, Dazai manipulated information so that it would change and Mori would be last. As Dazai says, "the system he used to assassinate people was my system too" -- and who did Verlaine target first instead of Mori? The Flags.
Dazai 100% knew what he was doing.
He's also the one who brought Chuuya to the Flags when Chuuya passed out and interestingly, prior to this, he must have known/seen Albatross still alive, still grasping for air - and did nothing about it. Except bring Chuuya there, likely hours later.
The Flags, Detective Murase, Chuuya's torture - Dazai is responsible for this.
A common occurrence with Dazai's character is his manipulation and passivity when it comes to ensuring the best outcome. He is willing to let bad things happen to people as long as it best serves his goals. Before I mention the more known things, I'd like to say that Dazai is like Ranpo in that they can both see through things. Dazai knew about the secret government facilities torturing children for skill research and used it as a part of his plan. How many times do you think Dazai saw suffering and actively chose to ignore it or utilize it to his advantage?
He does this multiple times through-out the series:
He lets Atsushi, Tanizaki and Naomi be lured in a trap, despite knowing that Higuchi was a mafiosi all along
He provokes Akutagawa's unhealthy obsession to get him to do things and even SMILES knowing this (manga: chapter 84) despite the fact that Aku literally has a terminal illness. Aku tells Atsushi that he can't bear to disappoint Dazai before he dies (chapter 87) - and Dazai fully takes advantage of this
Kunikida and Sasaki (Dazai's Entrance Exam LN)
and maybe some other stuff that I haven't mentioned
One big flaw Dazai has is that he doesn't trust people beyond the expectations he has for them. He doesn't share his plans and takes everything on by himself, planning ahead, using selective honesty and using those around him as pawns rather than team mates - even if his intentions are good.
An exception to this is when he fights as Double Black because he absolutely does trust Chuuya enough to share his plans and depend on him. But outside of these missions - Dazai's manipulative and control freak tendencies are still strong and standing.
Think of the current situation. Chuuya's a vampire. No matter how you look at it, Dazai's the one calling the shots. He's going to save Chuuya.
But it would be rather boring if everything went Dazai's way, don't you think? In Dead Apple, everything went his way and Chuuya saved him, just as he expected.
But this time, I want Chuuya to have a say in the grand scheme of things. How does he feel about being drowned by Dazai? How does he feel about Dazai in general - about his manipulation? Does he not feel used at times? Does he even know Dazai had a role in the Flags' demise?
A big big flaw of Dazai is his tendency to go full on chess-player mode and do things his way without regard or consultation from others -- and currently, I think one of - if not the best character to potentially call him out is none other than his ex-partner/childhood frenemy/person he's worked with the most, Chuuya Nakahara.
Thanks for reading <3.
(** extra notes that's lowkey unrelated but I want to mention it anyway cause I'm too lazy to make another post **)
it's funny how many people Dazai has callously let die or suffer for the sake of his plans/the optimal solution and yet when it happens to him (Mori -> Oda Sakunosuke), he is absolutely devastated. Maybe poetic justice in a sense (jk, I'm sorry Oda TT). I honestly want to see more emotional Dazai coming up in the future tho <3
I want Atsushi to stop viewing Dazai with rose-colored lenses and actually see the damage Dazai's caused Akutagawa
Also the part about Ranpo and Dazai being able to see through things like hidden evil that no one else can - this was actually inspired by a post from @dazailover420 about Ranpo's personality and how it's actually a coping facade to hide the pain from the things he sees daily (a pretty sad theory tbh). link to that is over here:

<33
thanks for reading and adieu ✨
goodnight im going to sleep now LOL.
I still have school tomorrow pls fjrhgregh. t'was a pretty good writing experience though. take care of yourselves.

If we’re talking about sexism in BSD can we talk about Dazai Osamu’s Entrance Exam? (Not the anime adaptation) I really really really hated how Dazai and Kunikida would talk about Sasaki right in front of her like she wasn’t even there?? And just how they generally were with her…Reading that light novel was a genuinely unpleasant experience more times than I’d like to admit solely because of how egregiously gross it was when it came to Sasaki's character and how the guys would treat her. I've never seen anyone talk about it but it's been bugging me for a while now.
(个_个)
I understand how that's all sorts of fucked up. I haven't read the Entrance Exam novel but in my opinion the Sasaki / Kunikida / Dazai anime scenes rub just as wrong. There's really the whole deal of talking in front of women like they were lesser / objects which is plain atrocious. But then again, the bsd novels produced the unfamous Naomi description, so it's really the author giving their worst apparently.
The sexism in bsd is pathologic. Something I've brought up before but that is really explicative to me, Dazai going “The murder must have occurred in the early morning, because that's the only time of the day a woman wouldn't be wearing make-up”. And it's probably silly of me to pick up on such a small thing when wearing make-up is debated within feminist spaces itself, and it's probably something I have personal issues with, but the way in the story it serves the role of an objective hint, something plain and unconfutable, that women are expected to wear make-up at every hour of the day and them not doing so is just absurd and unthinkable… To me it really speaks of how the world of bsd is a world were women are expected to fit a determined ideal that is very distant from reality, and the author really has a very limited understanding of what women are actually like irl.
If we’re talking about sexism in bsd, can we talk about what was up with the Yosano / buisnessman (?) scene in chapter 7? It's been two years since I've watched and read that scene, and I still can't figure out what it's supposed to mean or convey. First, Yosano is shown being tame and overly polite towards someone who was being extremely rude; then, after he hits her and tells her to know her place, she replies “Well, a thousand pardons, sir. Would it be more womanly for me to crush your puny ××××× under my heels, perhaps?”. Now, her reply is somewhat funny, but really, doesn't mean anything. And I'm not talking about the censure. Why is her behaviour so fluctuating and inconsistent? What does womanhood has to do with anything here? Why would she be so polite and then suddenly backtrack? Really, why was she being polite in the first place to someone being so vulgar and disrespectful towards her? Honestly, that doesn't feel Yosano at all. At most it feels like that's supposed to portray how a woman is expected to react in an imaginary and unrealistic world, but that has so little standing potential irl, not even Yosano in this manga could hold the charade for long, and the result ends up looking awkward and nonsensical. Every time I see this scene I'm just like… What is going on here. Not even in a judgemental way, just as in “I seriously can't understand what the author was trying to say with this”, and frankly, I don't think they do know either. It really makes evident their struggle to write female characters, like women were this strange, foreign, very abstract concept that's impossible to crack or relate to. And when the answer is so simple, that you shouldn't write women as an unknown and indecipherable species, but simply as people— it would almost be endearing if it wasn't so detrimental. I won't even get to her “It is an era of equality for men and women” line which, put in the context of this manga, comes off as the most unfunny joke ever. Here, I can see what the author was trying to do alright, nodding to irl Yosano Akiko feminist viewpoints, but making the character Yosano talk in cheap feminist slogans to rival mcu movies ends up doing her a disservice more than anything, and I doubt it would leave the actual Yosano Akiko positively impressed at all.
If we’re talking about sexism in bsd, can we talk about how Kouyou should be the next pm boss, and the fact that the spot is canonly reserved for Chuuya instead is insane and nonsensical and outrageous to the point that even CHUUYA agrees on the fact that she should be the one? You know, Kouyou, the powerful ability user, experienced, senior in hierarchy, who has been shown to be both loyal to the current boss Mori and close to him on a personal level? Compared to Chuuya who never wanted to be the boss in the first place? But he gets to be either way, because the concept of a woman pm boss is just unthinkable. I feel like there's more reasons to cry for that Cannibalism stage play scene than the Flags' voices.
If we’re talking about sexism in bsd, can we talk about Higuchi? Can we talk about Lucy? Bsd offers so many examples of its sexism, we could be here to talk about it for days. At this point I feel like I might come across as someone who loves hating on things, but in reality every time I write a post of this kind it's a desperate prayer to the author: “Prove me wrong! Please, prove me wrong! Write women with layers and agencies! Expand on their virtues and flaws and ambitions! Dedicate narrative arcs to them! Prove me wrong!”
