For some reason I crave conversation and discussion.
Have I written another single word of this story? No. Do I think about it daily? More like all the time.
Also, tell the man who inspired the character to ditch golden jewelry. It doesn’t complement his pretty blue eyes in the slightest.

TAZ 2023 Fic Recs
It is that time of year again! Unfortunately, I don't have as many as last year, mainly because work and Life have been a lot this year. But I am very, very glad to share the fics I have loved this year and I'm looking forward to any other recs!
A Candlenights Barold by @sgrumby - or honestly, all three of the Reaper Squad Candlenights fics! Based off that one liveshow where Merle became Santa Clause. Now it is the job of Barry, Lup, and Kravitz to deliver presents to children every Candlenights! This one is based off A Christmas Carol and is not only hilarious but also super in character.
The Best Version Possible by @thedaisiestdaisy - Taako's experience with past romances, his current one with Kravitz, as well as the aftermath of Story and Song. This is a beautiful, meaningful fic that hits me in the feels every time I read it. It's such a deep, refreshing dive into Taako's character.
a monster might begin to worry by @anistarrose - In short, a Barry-kills-Governer-Kalen AU. In long: Such a good fucking fic. Rose's character voices are top notch and she's so incredibly good at playing with emotions and building up scenes. It's a god-tier Magnus fic, with some fun Magnus-Kravitz interactions and some wonderful hurt/comfort.
Also by Rose and very worth reading:
fill up your lungs, feel better - Barry spies on the BOBs corporate excursion and realizes his family still cares, even if they don't truly know him.
to eat from a poisoned plate - Barry leaves notes in Taako's cookbook.
somewhere over the rainbow (bluebirds fly) - Maureen and Lucretia fall in love. Then, Maureen and Lucretia fall out of love.
midlife crises, laboratory niceties - Barry bulldozes his way into being on the Starblaster crew. Davenport is very concerned <3
colors of space and time - Taako and Lup's relationship with their hair.
Rode Hard And Put Away Wet by @holdmecloser-gandydancer - Band AU!! My beloved!! Lup, Johann, and Kravitz are in a band and it gets. Tough. To put it lightly. Whenever Lup discovers Kravitz and Taako are hooking up. This is a WONDERFUL and super funny fic, that also has it's moments of deep reflections and a lil angst! Plus, Blupjeans! We love that!
Astrology for Horse Jugglers by @noodyl-blasstal - Kravitz and Taako meet at a wedding. This goes badly for everyone except them. This fic is pure chaos and I adore it so, so much.
We Got Boned! - Another one by Noodyl! Barry and Lup write a book for payback, kinda. This one is such a fun, weird turn of events. I cannot describe my love for it.
Revenge Plus One by @ceilingfan5 - Kravitz is invited by his ex (Edward) to go on a cruise. A cruise that will host Edward's wedding. And, to add insult to injury, Edward (rightly) assumes that Kravitz will have no one to bring along. So Kravitz does the responsible adult thing: Invite the gorgeous man who sells bagels in the work cafeteria (Taako) on the cruise with him. There is fake dating! There is tension! There is romance! I love this fic so much, I want to eat it.
a lesson in boy math - Also by Larissa! Speed-dating, Taakitz style. Both Taako and Kravitz are the best shade of weird in this <3
fashion statement by @journalofimprobablethings - Taako takes Lup's robe when he finds her and the umbrella. Lucretia deals with that. This fic? Destroyed me. And I loved it. It's pretty full of angst but the good kind, y'know?? I'm in love.
That's all I got this year!! I hope you all enjoy these fics as much as I did! They're all incredible and I love seeing all the different ideas and takes everyone has :O

Hey, this is my first request ever. So i’ll get straight to it. Could you do a HOOK fic/drabble/headcanon(you can pick) of him finding out you are a 2nd gen wrestler kid of HBK, Ted DiBiase or anyone else
I am HONORED that you chose me for your first request, hopefully, I did your idea justice
Reunited (And It Feels So Good): Hook X Reader
Genre: Fluff Headcanon, I don’t wanna spoil it but strangers/childhood friends to lovers???
Summary: Hook finds out a not-so-very-secret secret about you.
Word Count: 719
Supreme Speaks: tbh, i might do a fic based on this later on next month. thank you to the anon who requested this and I hope they (and everyone else) like it. i also wish everyone is doing well and remember you are loved and appreciated. Happy New Year!!
Warnings: None really, I TRIED MY BEST, I used gender-neutral terms to appeal to everyone
Taglist (DM if you want to be added): @hooks-martin @triscillal @diabloguapos @wwenhlimagines @sheinthatfandom
AEW has many second-generation wrestlers such as Brian Pillman Jr., Brock Anderson, The Gunn Boys, and Hook
Hook didn’t really “get along” with the others
He just wasn’t that interested in talking with them
Or with anyone outside his friend group
That was until you arrived on AEW’s scene
Many people, fans and wrestlers alike, were excited to see you in AEW
You have made a name for yourself all around the world for your wrestling skills, storytelling abilities, charisma, and attractiveness
And slightly because you are Shawn Michaels’ child
Yeah, that’s right. Mr. Wrestlemania, The Heartbreak Kid is your dad
Even though it was a blessing to have him as your dad and mentor, you wanted to become a wrestling legend by yourself
So your ring name was completely different from his and you barely mentioned him in promos/interviews (essentially keeping your personal life very private)
But everyone can see the resemblance when you step in the ring, especially when you went against Natalya or Charlotte Flair
Anyways back to Hook
He was completely “hooked” when he saw you for the first time, to the extent that he actually started to talk to you first
It surprised many people backstage as they know Hook to be cold to others
And as you were seen as an untouchable person (being the child of one of the most prominent figures of professional wrestling)
As he started to talk to you more, he couldn’t help but admire you, your accomplishments, and your personality, and vice versa
However, he felt more familiar with you. Like he already met you before or something. But he just passed it off as the butterflies in his stomach growing
After being in AEW for about a month, you and Hook started to date
Many people started to notice Hook being happier and slightly more friendly (not too much) to others, including his dad, Taz
While his son was telling him about his significant other, Taz couldn’t help but smile and laugh
“It’s so nice to see you two reconnecting after all these years.”
“Reconnecting? What do you mean?”
Taz then opened a little book of memories of his career and flipped to a random page before showing it to his son
“The number of times Shawn and I had to meet up at the park or backstage for your little playdates-“
Hook blocked out his dad as he analyzed the picture of a younger him and what seemed like a younger you smiling at each other, while Taz and Shawn were in the background
"You two were very close until they went to live with their mom full-time while Shawn was on the road. Y'all just went separate ways and sort of forgot about each other."
Everything started to click in his head as he picked up his phone and dialed your number
It made sense why you two got along so easily, how you had the same opinions on different topics, how it felt like you two went through the same experiences
He vaguely remembered you, but he didn’t know it was you
As soon as you picked up he said, “You’re Shawn Michaels’ kid?”
“Yeah…I thought you knew.”
Now he felt like an idiot…
“It's like I knew, but I didn't know it was you. It's complicated-”
“I thought it was a fact that everyone chooses not to discuss like how you’re Taz’s son.”
After explaining why you didn't bring up your dad (mainly because everyone talks about him or associates you with him), Hook said he wasn't mad but just surprised and completely understood your reasoning
"But this also explains why I felt so vulnerable with you. I'm happy we were able to find each other again"
After getting off the phone, Hook sent you the picture
A couple of moments, he was notified that you posted on Instagram
It was the picture of you two and then a more recent picture with the caption "day 1 🤍"
He found himself smiling at the post, also happy that he found you again

It's almost 11pm and today's @taznovembercelebration piece is once again over 3k so I'm too lazy to do the formatting on tumblr, so it's just on ao3, but it's based off of my very first taz fic idea i had in 2019 that i never did anything with aside from write a few scenes.
Day 7: laugh/problem
Angus McDonald is having a normal one. Until he's not.
Read it on AO3

BKS ✦ notes & bts : chapters 1-5
Tumblr media
spoilers for chapter 1-5 of Best Kept Secret!!
a/n :
I feel like this is just SO self indulgent of me but whatever I guess lmao, bks is my brain baby currently and I will take any excuse to talk about it. These posts are going to be long in-depth dives into my writing process, dress inspo, music i was inspired by, etc. of the mentioned chapters so settle in cause this is what i'm doing today lol. also this might be the longest one bc i'm gonna talk about starting and coming up with everything.
starting writing and original outlines :
i've said this so many times lmao but i wrote the ending first. like the ending ending. i work really long hours at a job that has me listening to music for like ten hours a day while i work so i get a lot of thinking time lmao. basically i originally wrote it as a story with no specific characters in mind. I'm a big Pedro fan so i was between characters i thought fit the fic but settled on din because i think he fit the character i was imagining best. (it helps that he's in my top three pedro characters lol) from there laid out a vague outline in my mind of where i wanted to start so i created a set list of characters and basically just dove right in without much to guide me except for an ending point lmao. it wasnt until closer to like chapter 15-16 when i started properly outline each chapter in advance in the document, before that i just wrote vague notes in a notebook that i didn't end up following all that well lmao
music :
i've also said this at one point but the original name of best kept secret was "my keeper and i" i wrote the first three chapters in the same week and spread out the posting but i used the same playlist for most of the early stuff so here's that!!
original bks playlist
inspirations :
if you've seem/read bridgerton then you might know that i took a lot of inspiration from the pattern the show uses and still do.
basically the show has a pattern of the couple getting together and breaking it off or having an issue that's resolved and then there's a new issue. i've sort of been following that sorta kinda
also reader is heavily based on charlotte because i had just finished queen charlotte when i started writing bks
din is more based on anthony bridgerton than george, (anyone unfamiliar with bridgerton, george is the love interest in queen charlotte)
also a lot of din's style of self loathing is based on edwards from twilight LMAO
notes :
Tumblr media
here's a random page of misc. notes that i lowkey can't decipher lol
Tumblr media
here are my chapter four notes! shoutout to when i didn't realize it was sarad'ika and it was originally ika sarad lmaooo
there's some unused dialogue here, specifically there was going to be a longer conversation about how he wanted to get her out of the castle more often as well as a scene where she was going to eat fruit ands it was gonna drip down her front and he was gonna wipe it off. it was gonna be a whole thing lmao but it didn't really fit the rest of the chapters vibe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so.... originally there was a timeline issue where the first lunar interlude (i'm a huge taz balance fan and that's where i got the name lunar interlude from lmaoooo, i have 2 taz tattoos) was going to be chapter 4 and then it was going to be chapter 6 and then it made the most sense to make it 5, so any timeline notes here are wrong.
in my original concept for the fic, every chapter was going to end with a small portion of din pov, but it didn't flow well and i really didn't like it so it ended up being easier having it be specific chapters.
when writing the first lunar interlude i went through and read the previous chapters and wrote down how i thought he was feeling during each scene which is what these notes are ^
dresses :
here's a collection of the dresses i used as inspo for chapters 1-5 (these were posted on my old account but i'm gonna put them here as well!!)
chapter one :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the wedding dress was based on this dress!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and this is the sort of jewelry i was picturing but this stuff is still pretty, i couldn't find anything as ugly as what i was picturing for her wedding jewelry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is the sort of stuff i pictured for her blue dresses she hates but honestly all of these are pretty as well LMAO. in all honesty i think that the blue dresses she doesn't like wearing are probably pretty i think she mostly just hates what they stand for and also they put her in gaudy makeup and jewelry as well which doesn't help
chapter two :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
used all sorts of dresses as inspo for this chapter! here are these!
chapter three :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sort of a combination of these for the chapter three dress, if that makes sense lmao
chapter four :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
something along these lines for the garden dress!!
that's all for these chapters!! I'll probably do 6-15 for the next one since there won't be as many notes for those and then go back to five each for the rest!! i have to do some practice makeup for the concert i'm going to this week so the next one of these will be up either tonight or tomorrow!!

Hey so I have had a lot of ideas for TMA fics and I don't write fics,, like ever,, so if anyone wants some inspiration far a kinda crazy fic, here's most of my list:
• Au were martin really was a ghost
• Jonah killed Martin after Jon promised to not look in his head and when they go to fight Elias/Jonah it's revealed (that one's pretty wild and probably wouldn't work but I like it)
• Be more chill au -Jonah Magnus is the squip, Elias is Jeremy, Michael is Michael, Rich is either James wright or Maxwell Rayner
• Heathers au Jonah is JD Elias is Vanessa
• Dear Even Hansen au Elias is Connor
• What Joshua gilespie does in the eyepocolypse
• In 1997, Elias brings brownies into the archives. The last person he offers the brownies to is James Wright who considers the offer before informing Elias that the brownies are, in fact, filled to the fuckin brim with pot. Chaos ensues as the majority of the archives crew is now high from the pot brownies (Based on Gray's Anatomy Season 14 episode 20)
• Time travel aus-
• Ep 200 -> 1996: office Twink from artifact storage is 20 years older and Knows shit and also has new eyes (why is he here? That's for you to decide)
• Ep 200-> 1996: crazy rat man from tunnels is freaking out and Knows shit (Marto might also be there)
• 1996-> 2016: office Twink from artifact storage fucked with a thing and shit happens now it's 2016??? And there's also another him that's also Jonah Magnus who was also James wright??? Wild.
• Tattoo shop au: Flower shop- Mike, Tim, Sasha, Martin Tattoo shop- Gerry, Jon, Agnus? (Witchy shit shop- Oliver, Jane, Jude?)
• Ok so in like ep192 or whenever they see jonalias they just like,,, successfully pull him down and give him Eliass eyes back and it also might end the eyepocolypse but I'm not sure
• Au where Eric Delano lives and he and adelard dekker raise Gerry bc fuck mary
• 2016 the og crew is just havin a baller time but then what the fuck the world just ended? Turns out the web did the ritual before Jonah could pull it off that sucks well what the fuck then what do we do? Or it was just like,, a meteor or something? Full on you me and the apocalypse style
• Not!Jon
• Desolation!Tim
• A series of letters between Jonah and all the other boys (or Anabelle and all the other boys) in an 1800s au
• TAZ (the adventure zone) TMA AU:John=Jon Merle=Martin, Julia= Basira, Magnus=Daisy (kinda), Lup=Sasha (litch= not Sasha?), Taako=Tim, Lucretia= Gertrude, Davenport= Elias I guess, Krav= Oliver (duhzville), Barold= Micheal (litch= the distortion), Garfield the deals warlock= Mikaele Salesa
•^JohnxMerle(xDav?)
• TMA TAZ AU- Martin and others are a part of the IPRE and they meet Jon the Hunger/archivist.

hi hi!!! 24, 20 and 13 for the ask game. <3
24: Which fic of yours do you wish people would ask about more? Why?
I dunno, nothing really jumps to mind at the moment? I love being asked about literally anything, whether it's the most recent thing or something I wrote six years ago.
20: Which fic have you put the most work into? Which fic have you put the least work into?
[new project] almost certainly. I don't think I've edited anything so intensely maybe ever? Runner-up is The Reckoning Arrives, which is almost 78K and took many months, so that tracks.
I've written a ton of little fics mostly for The Adventure Zone that are just "hi here have some words." The most recent thing of that nature is I think Oh no he's hot, which is a tiny little Ed POV fic that I wrote in a single morning based on a Tumblr post.
13: Do you prefer writing multi-chapter fics or single-part fics? Do you prefer reading multi-chapter fics or single-part fics?
I don't have a preference for writing, I just go where the muse drop-kicks me. For some reason, in this fandom it's been more multi-chapter, or at least multi-part, whereas in TAZ I wrote a lot of little vignettes. Which is probably partially the source material and partially the absolute transformation of my life since then.
I will read either; I've gotten off track with some of the multi-chapter WIPs I've been subscribed to lately, but I like both in different ways.

What have you been up to? Ramble away about your current interests my friend 👉😎👉
uhhhhhhh well. in the years since consistent activity I have:
Started, Subscribed, and MSQ/Major sidequest Cleared FFXIV and it occupies my brain like a parasitic worm (but I love it) as goes most people who get into it it seems. For those wondering started with WHM and have run it through just about everything so I'm fairly confident I am at least Somewhat Competent in pretty much everything except Savage and Alexander raids (shudders in Eyes of the Creator if you know you know)
Not only that but have main 5 categories of battle class leveled- WHM for healer, PLD for tank, MNK for melee, DNC phys ranged, RDM caster
I should stop talking about FFXIV help
I think I've changed jobs??? still call center-based work boo been there two years and I Hate It Homie (but hey 16/hr without a degree is hard to beat)
my cringe ass ff.net is poised for deletion as I've got ebook back ups of everything I just can't commit yet (and might not have to since I hear. Gasping Dying rumors about ff.net being on last legs)
I've developed a hobby of making FEH wlw ships- Azura/Deirdre, Mathilda/Lilith, Nagi/Natasha, Felicia/Selena (sacred stones) to throw some out -and stubbornly want to write fic but can't seem to figure out how to finish it oops
also generally feel awkward posting on AO3 because I don't really agree with their "you can write fic of actual people" stance but also Where Else Post Fic but also jokes on me I can't finish fic anymore
speaking of I did contribute to a zine or two with the Invincible Zine group over on twitter a handful of Duo Unit scripts and a 5k one shot on the Horrors of Adrift Corrin
("Katie isn't that the "uwu" corrin alt that looks after baby azura what is possibly horrifying about that" you ask and to which I respond "eldritch horror of being a dream-based sentient clone made real babeyyyyyyyyyyyy" and I didn't even use all my concepts and ideas)
Genshin Impact made a character I finally was willing to eat the lore for Miss Shenhe I love you so much what a wlw icon I think I did reblog something of her earlier but yea love
Played through Persona 5 Royal was a good game but I have never seen a game Say So Much and Nothing At All at the same time while also contradicting itself (and somehow in 100+ hours of gameplay even on 2nd easiest difficulty and w/ a friend and a guide hello). Core cast is poggers tho love these high schoolers and I don't think anyone would be surprised to hear I love futaba the most
Have kinda accepted that I've fallen out of love with KH and frankly don't feel a lot of hype for 4. 3 was a solid gameplay entry with some neat use of worlds for the filler plot but the more time goes on the more disappointed I get with how it handled resolving anything from all the build up, shafting it in favor of setting up a game that doesn't even exist yet.
Because of this I REALLLLY loved Endwalker and was very happy to play it on release (oops back on XIV braincell)
I do miss RikuVen tho and think about how Re:Mind validated the hell out of me by confirming Riku hung out with the Wayfinders and to the lil guys out there making content big fucking salute I'm sorry I'm a bitter woman who couldn't handle expectations.
Have a wild ass idea about XIV/Fates crossover to give an excuse for Ysayle/Corrin to exist they are just about perfect together but can't quite figure out how to make a plot to justify it that I'm satisfied with
I made a quotes bot on twitter that may not last much longer but eh
Gotten really into The Oh Hellos not out of any christian love but moreso the lyrics are just (chef kiss)
TAZ Ethersea season one was. Okay? It started really strong but fell off like the shoreline which was. sad. I can hope season 2 learns better from the mistakes there but also can't be too mad improv-based storytelling is hard to 100% nail
is that everything? I think that's like everything. still me just now several years older and just a smidge wiser and man I'm gonna be 26 in like. a week.
oops.

no grave can hold my body down, I'll crawl home to him
@taakitzweek, Day 1! (with a bonus alternate ending)
Kravitz hadn’t intended to be caught out here, in the rain, in the dark, barely managing to keep one foot stable, scythe out for balance instead of reaping like it’s meant to do, on their anniversary.
“You’re just making this harder for yourself,” he calls in his work accent, swearing under his breath as he nearly falls. This necromancer seems to have set up some sort of… obstacle course? With wards around it that block his access to his non-human forms. The whole thing is suspended with ropes above a deep artificial gorge, the bottom far below invisible in the gloom.
Right now, Kravitz is barely keeping his feet under him on a large, wobbly red dome, two behind him, three others ahead. The scythe helps, but only a little bit. He already blazed through one obstacle, that required him to leap from one tilted rectangle to another or else fall into the depths below. He doesn’t know how far down the wards blocking him from flight extend, but he doesn’t want to find out the hard way.
“Aren’t you having fun?” the disembodied voice of the necromancer asks. “After all, you should have to prove your skills to get a chance to fight me.”
“You know you’re just a two-bit necromancer, don’t you?” Kravitz calls, taking a steadying breath and leaping in three quick bounds to the end of this obstacle. He eyes the next one sourly, a bar between slotted indentations in two floating walls, with more indents rising up. “At best.”
“Now you’re just being mean,” the voice chides. “Now you have to be careful with this one. For the fantasy salmon ladder, you have to jump with the bar up to the next rung, and swing from there to the floating dice!”
“The what?”
“Only four sides, don’t worry.”
Kravitz breathes slowly, trying to calm his newly pounding heart, and lets his scythe vanish. He rolls his shoulders and lets his suit jacket disappear, leaving him only in his white shirt and black pants. He had kicked off the shoes after those rectangles, dispensing with the socks as well, and tied back his braids after one of his gold beads had swung around and smacked him in the face.
“I’m not the most dexterous,” he admits, keeping up his work accent. “Why don’t we just have a straight fight?”
“That’s no fun.”
“You know that even if I fall I won’t die, right?”
“It’ll still give me plenty of time to hide again,” the necromancer says, sounding entirely too cheerful. “I imagine your new heart and blood won’t take too kindly to that kind of fall damage, anyway.”
“I beg your pardon?” Kravitz says sharply. There should be no way the necromancer would have that kind of information.
“You know, I bet your elf friend would do great on this course!” the necromancer exclaims. “He’s a regular flip wizard, isn’t he? What was his name? Taako?”
“You’re not going anywhere near Taako,” Kravitz growls, and jumps for the bar. He forces it up, hopping the bar three rungs up in a matter of seconds, swinging to the ‘floating dice’ with relative ease. Those are harder, and he almost falls, catching himself at the last moment. The voice cheers, commenting dramatically on everything he does, but he manages to take a flying leap and land on the next platform, slamming his knee against the edge.
“Oof, that’s gonna leave a mark!” the necromancer says cheerfully, and now Kravitz can see her, holding a brightly decorated microphone, alone in an announcer’s booth save for a half-rotted zombie thrall, which is also holding a microphone. “We thought you were a goner there for a second, but you really pulled through!”
Kravitz just growls, no words this time, and glares at the next obstacle, a narrow space between two curved walls, the rain coating them.
“Now, bare feet is an interesting choice for this one,” the necromancer says. “Don’t you think, Rocky Road?”
“Did you name your zombie thrall Rocky Road?” a familiar voice rings out, pitch rising in delight at the end of the sentence. Kravitz looks around frantically, shoving his braids out of his face, to find Taako lounging right next to him.
“Taako?”
“Hey babe.”
“How did you—”
“I’m not really here,” Taako explains, and as Kravitz squints through the rain, he sees that Taako is indeed spectral, albeit shining brighter than most full-bodied people. The elf grins and tips his wizard hat. “Turns out you can modify Blink! Cool, huh?”
Kravitz raises his eyebrows, running through the spellwork necessary to do that and finding himself, once again, astonished by this impossible elf. “When did you do that?”
“When you were late for dinner,” Taako says, pouting. “You could have called.”
“No he couldn’t!” the necromancer calls. “Wards!”
“Wasn’t talking to you, bubbeleh!” Taako yells back without looking. “Bones, come home.”
“I can’t, babe,” Kravitz says, gesturing at the course in general. “Wards.”
Taako sniffs, glancing up towards the necromancer. “Well, she should just be embarrassed,” he grumbles, doing something with his hands that Kravitz can’t make out. “I mean, that hat with those robes? Yikes.”
“Whaaaat are you doing?” Kravitz asks, recognizing the look in his husband’s spectral eyes. Taako is about to do something that breaks the laws of the universe, again, he can just tell.
“Ihave an amazing dinner laid out,” the elf informs him. “That you, my dude, are missing out on right now. And I want my husband home for our anniversary.”
“He’s busy!” the necromancer yells.
Taako doesn’t even spare one of his hands, instead conjuring a Mage Hand wordlessly just to flip her off. He grunts, apparently done with whatever it was he was doing, and Kravitz, without being prompted, stands back. Taako lifts both hands, forming a diamond shape, and Kravitz faintly hears Barry and Lup in the background, calling out details of whatever ritual Taako is doing, and Angus, cheering him on. Taako looks sideways at nothing (Angus, probably), winks, and then with a pop he’s fully present, standing on the platform in the flesh.
“I knew you were gonna break the universe again,” Kravitz says fondly, Taako already moving into his embrace. He presses a kiss to Taako’s hair. “Hi, babe.”
Taako smiles against his collarbone before standing back. “Digging the workout look, my dude. Bare feet?”
“Dress shoes are more slippery,” Kravitz says, gesturing up at the sky. “It’s raining.”
“Uh-huh,” Taako snorts, lifting his replacement umbra staff, although this one definitely does noteat magic, liches or otherwise. He opens it, shielding himself from the rain, and grins at Kravitz. “So, what’dya need?”
“Oh, I don’t know, Taako,” Kravitz jokes, feeling a buildup of necrotic energy at his back. “Maybe we can just celebrate our anniversary right here?”
“No!” the necromancer screams. “You have to complete the course!”
“But my dinner, babe,” Taako pouts.
“True,” Kravitz acknowledges. “Well, I guess I just have to… finish this?”
“Oh! Hold on,” Taako says, and carefully casts a spell. Kravitz feels a glow spread through him, pouring into his muscles like sunlight and hot chocolate. “Bull Strength,” Taako explains. “Picked it up from Merle.”
“Thanks, babe,” Kravitz says, pulling him into kiss. Beyond them, the necromancer is shrieking something unimportant, and when she shoots a withering bolt of necrotic energy at them, Taako’s umbra staff effortlessly knocks it away.
“Go on,” Taako says, floating up and over the obstacle, deflecting another bolt. “I’ll be waiting up at that big red button up there, although,” he shrugs. “You know how I am with big red buttons.”
“I know,” Kravitz calls. He smirks at the obstacle in front of him and leaps forward, slamming his hands and feet against the sides, catching himself effortlessly. He scoots through the tunnel, barely noticing the rain pouring down the sides anymore. He jumps onto the next platform and faces the final obstacle, a fourteen-foot-high curved wall, Taako and the button at the top. His husband is caressing the button, occasionally snarking back at the necromancer, who is growing increasingly unstable. Kravitz smiles and sprints at the wall, leaping up and just barely getting a grip on the edge. Taako looks down with a smile, spinning the umbra staff, necromantic spells splattering against it like water.
“Look, rabbit, I saved the button just for you.”
“Thanks, dove,” Kravitz says, hoisting himself up over the edge. Taako pulls him into another kiss, and Kravitz thumps the button almost as an afterthought.
The necromancer shrieks again and the whole course shakes like an earthquake, the obstacles disintegrating behind them. Kravitz grabs Taako as the wall crumbles to dust underneath their feet. He feels the wards snap just in time to catch them both in midair, hovering and watching the necromancer with equally unimpressed expressions.
“Not bad,” she sneers, hands crackling with black fire. “But you’re no match for me!”
She thrusts her hands skyward, zombie thralls erupting out of the earth around her announcer’s booth. Kravitz whistles and the true ground materializes once again, free of the shielding spell. He sets Taako neatly on his feet and pulls his scythe from the Astral Plane, twirling it with ease.
“Just come quietly,” he says in his work accent, smirking at Taako giggling. “You’re making me late for dinner.”
The necromancer howls, apparently beyond words now, and Kravitz and Taako flip and jump their way through the zombie hordes, Taako blasting Disintegrate at the zombies sneaking up behind Kravitz, Kravitz whipping his scythe through three zombies on top of Taako.
They reach the necromancer in her crumbling announcers booth. She snarls, black blades forming out of nothing in her hands. Kravitz smiles and gently moves Taako behind him.
“This’ll just take a second,” he assures him.
Taako grins and conjures some popcorn, winking at Kravitz when he laughs.
Kravitz is still laughing when he hooks his scythe into the necromancer’s soul. He yanks it out as her body disintegrates, opens a portal, and stares straight into Taako’s eyes as he says, “Yeet!” and throws her soul into the Eternal Stockade.
Taako erupts into laughter, popcorn spilling everywhere, tears at the corners of his eyes. Kravitz laughs too, scooping him up into his arms.
“Who taught you that?” Taako demands through laughter, hooking an arm around Kravitz’s neck.
“Angus,” Kravitz admits, grinning. “Now, I believe you promised me dinner?”

the tfw discord: so what if the boys had memory problems after they recovered the stolen century? me, immediately:
Cooking is a reflex. Taako finds himself opening cabinets, shuffling through pots and pans, preheating the oven without having to run the numbers in his head. It’s the one thing besides magic that comes as easily to him as breathing, and there are days where it might as well be—like today, when slicing apart each small, rounded potato is as effortless as the twitch of a finger. He’d told Magnus and Merle once that he could whip up a better meal than all the Bureau’s cafeteria staff combined—with his eyes closed—and promptly been challenged by one member of said staff. One blindfold and an admittedly messy kitchen later, the employee had conceded to a savory, satisfying success.
When the potatoes are diced and scattered across an ornate glass pan, complete with rich green peppers and a touch of seasoning, Taako reaches absently over to his assembly of ingredients on the counter. Just one more component, and then he can start it roasting and move onto the sausage, because gods know Magnus alone will pick through the peppers to get to the meat. Lup, at the very least, is sure to appreciate his vegetarian-friendly masterpiece, even if no one else in their carnivorous family will. He just needs—
He needs—
Taako’s hand stalls in empty air, and suddenly he’s hyperaware of the oven’s maddening hum, and the gentle breeze drifting in from an open window, and someone’s dog barking outside. His eyes flick to the ingredients and he knows all of them, could list them in alphabetical order, but the mental step-by-step in his head is gone. Blank. Like someone’s plucked it clear out of his memory—no, no, not like that. Never again. But that doesn’t change the fact that one minute it was there and the next it’s just—vanished.
“Come on,” he whispers, and snaps his fingers like it’s going to conjure up the memory. Potatoes, peppers, a subtle but elegant dusting of spice. Check, check, check, and then the checklist breaks off, like someone’s ripped it in half. Taako stares down the length of his outstretched arm and burns his gaze into every bottle, scouring the label for some sort of clue. Salt, pepper, olive oil, baking grease, sausage. He can feel his heart starting to race, and that’s what makes it so much worse—like this is a big deal, like people don’t forget shit all the time—
“Son of a bitch,” Taako breathes, because this is a big deal; because he’s a chef, for gods’ sake, and if there’s anything he’s supposed to know, it’s what comes after the fucking spices in a potato-and-pepper dish—
Olive oil.
The thought manifests itself gently, pushing through a mounting haze of panic and stifling frustration, and stands out clear as day. Taako’s hand closes around the olive oil. He lifts it slowly, dazedly off the counter, pops it open, and drizzles a good amount over the pan before he sets it back in its place. The pan goes in the oven. The oven door gets closed. Taako pulls out a chair at the kitchen table and sits down.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened.
He’d met Magnus on the quad a few days after Story and Song, and there was Carey right next to him, bantering on about something or other. He’d opened his mouth for some innocuous greeting, and—
There was a small, lithe dragonborn standing next to Magnus. He knew her—hell, they’d faced down a horde of possessed robots and his future boyfriend’s spectral warrior side by side. Every angle of her face and crinkled laugh line was unmistakably, undeniably familiar; he had the cadence and roughness to her voice down pat. But where a name should have been attached to her image, there was nothing. Just—nothing.
He’d arched an eyebrow and said, “Well, if it isn’t the dynamic duo,” and they’d grinned widely and started talking his ear off about whatever rogue shit they’d gotten up to, and Taako had listened with a quarter of his attention and an even smaller fraction of ease. Because he knew her name, he knew it, he knew. It was just a lapse, a quick slip of the brain. That was all. It had to be.
In the past he’d substituted nicknames for every fill-in-the-blank where he knew damn well a name resided. The entertainment value had endless potential, and it was a good exercise in seeing how creative he could be on the fly. Now, of course, it’s become a habit he can’t shake, but he also isn’t keen on admitting to himself how he’s started to lean on it. A face doesn’t always recall a name. Sometimes it recalls an impression (Lup, warm) or an emotion (Lucretia, anger) or something equally abstract. Sometimes the name is there, floating at the back of his mind, and sometimes it isn’t. There’s no way to tell, and he isn’t willing to make the venture—no, Taako’s good out here, playing it safe where he knows he won’t make a fool of himself. Names are a game of blackjack, and he’s pulling out before he makes a wrong bet.
Words are different. Words are sand in an hourglass, catching on his tongue and just as quickly sliding out of reach. He’d informed Merle and Magnus once, a bit haughtily, that a stutter is one of the first and most telltale indicators of brilliance, and it’s true that his mouth struggles to keep up with his brain more than he’d like to admit. But he doesn’t tell him about the words that ricochet, that bounce off a nearly formed thought and get completely lost. It doesn’t matter, because he has a veritable dictionary of colorful colloquialisms and self-invented slang that distracts from the way his sentences might flounder. Draw the eye, dull the senses. That’s showmanship at its finest.
The apartment is empty. In a few hours it’ll be filled to the brim with light and laughter and loud, boisterous accounts of what exactly had happened during Year 43, thank you very much, and what Angus could tell them of his newest case, and how fast the astral plane was filling up with Lup and Barry assisting Kravitz on the job. Taako takes a deep breath and flicks his wand at the gramophone across the room, and a lazy tune starts to play; muffled piano and the dark undertones of a cello. He stands back up and thinks stove, pan, sausage, and cycles the mantra in his head as he returns to the counter. Whether he’s dealing with fucking early onset dementia is his future self’s problem. There’s nothing he can do about it now.
He has a dinner to make. He has shit to get to.
He’s going to forget this whole thing ever happened.
