There was a period in Neopets wherein all the faeries were designed to wear bell bottoms for some reason and honestly I kind of feel like getting rid of them was a downgrade

enough dresses, have a faerie show up ready to bless your Neopet and then head out to the disco afterward

Opening with a parallel to 2001: A Space Odyssey is not only very funny for Barbie but also I think it carries the message of how female directors don't receive the same amount respect for their work male directors like Stanley Kubrick get from the offset. Like I can't name a single female director with the same sort of filmbro cult reverence Kubrick has. (Barbie touches on this again with the Godfather joke too). But also making that statement while premiering the same day as Oppenheimer, mainly hyped because of Christopher Nolan, a male director who has a bad track record with female characters and has said cult following really makes it stronger.

People say that northern food is bland when in reality, northern food done poorly is bland.
Northern food relies a lot on the flavor of the ingredients instead of spices to get its flavor. Just a hint of seasoning, like salt and pepper. The point of it is to let the ingredients stand out. If it's not cooked to respect the natural flavor, it's going to taste bad.
So no, we don't cover or laden or dishes with spices. It stems from the fact that the north doesn't provide a great environment for spices. But we found how to make our food taste good without it.
Case in point:
I made a clam chowder earlier this year with a recipe that was more orientated for my state. Salt and pepper were the only seasonings- the flavor came from the clam juice and bacon. It was good.
I've made Dublin coddle several times, which is an Irish dish. Salt and pepper are the main seasonings. It gets its flavor from the sausage and bacon, and the vegetables. It makes a delicious gravy to mop up with the right kind of bread.
Northern food isn't bland. It needs to be cooked right.

So I love Grian's new skin. I don't know why this is making me go nuts.
Image description below the cut.
A full body line drawing of Grian in his DHP uniform, holding a mug and looking bored. Next to the full body image, there are a multitude of little doodles of Grian in several different situations.
Left top scene: Grian dealing with a customer, looking bored and sliding a sheet of paper towards them. You are the pov of the customer. He is saying the following: "You need form 36F-1, not 36F. You'll have to fill out form 77L to cancel your last request, then fill our the PP-471 again, to request the form to change your permit..."
Right top scene: A doodle of Grian shooting the shit with Coppy the Copy Machine from tumblr of years past. Grian says: "-and then Doc goes on a tangent about Joe's backline!" and Coppy says, "LOL What?"
Middle left scene: Grian looking vacant, eyes unfocused, with a steaming mug that says "I don't care" on it.
Middle center scene: Grian showing off his CASIO watch.
Middle right scene: Grian eating Skizz's lunch. There is a note next to him that says "Grian Do Not Touch" with big letters, with "ISTG -Skizz" written in tiny letters at the bottom.
Bottom left scene: Grian sleeping in his seat behind the plastic glass wall. Above him there's a sign hanging that says "On Break". In the pov of an angry hermit knocking on the plastic glass.
Bottom middle scene: Grian in a framed portrait, holding his mug. It is titled "Annoyance of the Month"
Bottom right scene: An unknown hermit looking around, saying "Hello? I need a new permit!" while Grian hides under the desk pretending he's not there.

love everyone's theories about what George, Paul or Ringo's films might be like, but we have met men before, yeah? four films about the four beatles is definitely code for a three and a half hour bio-epic about John Lennon's important life, and then some half hearted twenty minute mini features about the other three and how much they loved John

I've been getting a lot of kind words on my recent dyslexia/typos comic (thank you by the way!!) but something that seems to be coming up a lot is folks saying "see Clark being nice is interesting! And people say Superman is boring!"" and while I take the compliment that I've written him well, I worry that it's kind of missing the point in a big picture way.
So much of superhero and Superman narrative discussion gets recycled and caught up in petty discourse: "the red underwear is ridiculous" "no one would do something nice for free" "he has it too easy" etc. and you can tell companies are paying attention to that stuff because they're making shallow responses to all of that to the detriment of their stories. I think about how the Disney live action remakes make surface level changes in response to cinema sins style online discourse, or how MAWS as a show predominantly references and claps back at superficial Superman discourse post-snyderverse with no internal consistency or integrity over the themes and issues it touches on.
People eat that up because it's a checklist of things they want to see in media: diversity? Check! Superman smiles more? Check! Red underwear? Check! We're getting lost in all that to the point we're not asking "but what's the story about, though?" I think we need to be careful when media takes characters we've identified with, does the most liberally safe take on online discourse to please most fans, but then take the character in a narratively questionable direction.
Because we might just end up celebrating a Superman who's been re-appropriated to fit the safest, blandest version of kindness while reimagining his backstory from being an allegory for the immigrant experience to a story about a redeemed colonizer savior from planet empire. But he saves a cat from a tree right? Check.
All this to say, I'm still glad people like my comic. It talks about how marginalization isn't always something visibly apparent, how intersectionality between race and disability can cause someone to not reach out for help, how someone like Clark navigates solidarity without overstepping. I get a little disappointed when people look at all that and just see how it matches up to their shallow discourse checklist. Oh, Superman's kindness isn't boring? Check.

rant about nilou because i’m sick of people hating on her character:
nilou is not a bland character and i hate the way people constantly make her out to be one. the argument that she has no personality just because she’s kind and happy is so stupid to me.
she cares a lot about dance, she cares so much for the people around her, and she’s willing to fight for what she wants. some people say she did nothing in the archon quest. um, did we play the same quest? the arts were heavily looked down upon in sumeru and were on the verge of being banned in their entirety by the sages so academics could be the sole focus. the others could’ve never completed their mission had she not gone and danced in a public space (while it was banned) effectively drawing all the attention on her so she could help save not only the arts, but all of sumeru. she didn’t even hesitate to accept alhaitham’s plan if it meant she could save what she cares about, nor did she care about the possibility of getting arrested. not to mention, she literally got her vision because of how dedicated she was to her craft.
some people even have the audacity to say that kaveh would’ve done more than her. let’s be real here, i love that man, but he could not have done anything as significant as nilou. there’s a reason he only showed up at the very end.
just because she doesn’t have a super dark and angsty past like every other fucking character in this game, just because she isn’t hardcore or a badass like some of the other women characters like dehya, yelan, or beidou, and just because she’s a pure and happy soul does not make her bland or personality-less at all.

enemies to lovers isn't "he's generally an unpleasant person to be around, he constantly puts other people down and disrespects/condescends/ostracizes them, he's cruel and a bully... but his one redeeming quality is that he looks attractive" like. bestie that's not a redemption arc!! or a redeeming quality!!! a person can and should control their behaviors, but how they look literally has no bearing on their worth as a person!
like... this trope is about an initial misunderstanding and miscommunication that leads to mild conflict and resentment of each other, but eventually they move past this rocky start by revealing to each other their humanity and good qualities, and communicating what happened the first time they met so that they can clear up that situation, and slowly becoming good friends who enjoy spending time with each other and eventually become really close, and the realization that one accidental mishap/slip in behavior/aashole mistake isn't what defines a person and sometimes your first interpretation of them is sometimes wrong!! an entire opinion of someone should be formed based on their behaviors, values, actions, and morals, and quality time spent with this person, not because they have nice cheekbones.
