Tumblr media
...YouTube, I feel like your free animated movie recommendations have declined in quality a bit since the halcyon days of Osmosis Jones.
Yes, it is a blatant Kung Fu Panda knockoff, with an American voice cast that is clearly whoever was home at 11 am the week they called.
Tumblr media
This is bad. Like, unfinished, I think I'm missing like half the movie, they forgot to resolve the main plot and it just stops, bad. There is a scene where the only character on screen suffers an animation error, and no one fixed it. The framerate of the movie drops every time the action picks up or the camera swings around too fast. Like...you made a computer-animated movie, and you don't have the hardware or time to do...you know...computer animation? The stones on the Chinese producers of this mess.
Not everything has to be Pixar or DreamWorks. CG is hard. I get it. But you gotta work to your strengths. In this case, the computers you are using can't even render the movie properly. Like...I don't know how you get around that. That's kind of a major issue.
Technical incompetence aside, this suffers from the usual bad CG animation problems of every character looking like they come from a different artistic universe, and most of the action is generic mocaping that doesn't take into account how any real bodies shaped like these bodies would move. And there are just things they didn't bother capturing. Like none of these dough monsters ever stands up on screen.
Shot composition is a disaster. Most scenes are a mob of creatures standing in a pack in an empty space, doing exaggerated facial reactions to someone else talking. It's like bad machinima made in the Skylanders games engine, except all of the character designs are way worse.
The plot, such as they attempted it, is supposed to be about a small, incompetent warrior who looks like Jackie Chan who gets transported to the mystical realm of Merryland by a magical jade necklace his grandfather gave him. There, he transforms into an anthropomorphic panda, for reasons that are never explained. There is a prophecy that a Panda Warrior is destined to save the realm, and our guy is apparently it, except there is a flashback to like a couple of years ago when the ultimate evil took over, and...there is ANOTHER Panda Warrior who was just there and sort of stopped it? But then didn't? Who the hell was that guy?!
Also the ultimate evil is one of the two sky-whales who guard the Dragon Ball (yes, literally) just turning evil because it absorbed too much power. Why did this happen? How are you going to stop it from happening again? Then that whale turns into a nine-headed snake after an evil mouse from the real world just...is there, and merges with the Whale. After the snake is defeated the mouse just crawls out of it and runs away, and no one says a damn thing.
Our panda warrior and his 7 legendary warrior friends kung fu fight the snake at least 3 different times, and never get close to stopping it. And the panda doesn't do anything special or lead them, he is just there, and then at the very end his necklace glows and that...helps? Somehow? The true hero here is, and I'm not joking, Jimmy Ginseng, a tiny ginseng man with an erhu who shows up whenever the warriors are losing, plays the erhu, the enemy gets soothed by the song, and then Jimmy gets tired and leaves. EVERY BATTLE ends like this, including the final one.
So...?
The panda has that cool green sword in the picture. And he does have it. It is just...a sword, thst someone randomly gives him. I think he ends up dropping it and it never comes up again.
Also all the warriors are animals, except for the one who is a talking tree stump...filled with lava. And he dies at the end by setting himself and the snake on fire. Because his master, a purple fox, told him to do that to save everyone. ...Except the SNAKE SURVIVED IT, and they had to fight it again, lose, and wait for Jimmy to show up.
The bull character also sacrifices himself, TWICE, to save everyone else, and both times that doesn't work, either.
The movie ends with Merryland being restored from the devastation of the snake...BEFORE the snake is defeated. It just...gets better, after they resuce an elf girl princess who does...something...? And then the regrown flowers shoot the snake with missiles of some kind. Which ALSO fails to defeat it.
The panda doesn't go home and become human again and nothing is explained. But during the credits there is a fight scene between the little human warrior and his general, in which they get drunk and wrestle and tons of fight animations repeat in a loop for 3 minutes. Is this part of the movie? Are these outtakes? What does this have to do with anything? If this is what happens after he got home, I don't know why or what it means.
...My guess is that the first panda warrior we see was supposed to be his grandfather, as a panda? That was probably the idea? But no one ever says that. The movie doesn't remember to explain that.
This was translated from Chinese. Perhaps the translation is terrible. Or they did a massive reedit of this for the US release. That could explain some of this. ...But then why didn't they cut out the glitch scene, or some of the shots with the bad framerate? There are literal 10 second sequences in this movie where there is no dialogue or music, just a camera sleeping over a scenery to ambient nature sounds. Who reedits a movie for the foreign market and cuts out vital plot scenes, but leaves in shit like that?
...Unless all those vital plot scenes had even worse technical problems. Jesus. That's a terrifying thought.
One positive here. While nearly all of the voice work is as boring and bored as you'd expect, the immortal Tom Kenny is good, with what very little he is given to do, here. The man is a professional.
And here is the weirdest thing: Rob Schneider is really good here as the panda man and Jimmy Ginseng. Like, shockingly good. Like, this is without exaggeration the best performances of this man's miserable life. He is funny, charming, nuanced, he feels like he is reacting properly during what were probably one-sided conversations recorded on different days in different places. It is shocking how good he is in this awful, stupid movie. My only guess is that he was somehow involved in bringing this over and it was going to serve as an audition piece to get him more voice work. In which case, like, fair enough, dude. You nailed it. He is genuinely very good in this very bad movie.
What an odd artifact from 2012. What a waste of time. Why did YouTube recommend this? What do any of us gain from being shown this? I am just flabbergasted.
You're on time out with these movie suggestions, Google.
Also there is a pig who flies who looks like this:
Tumblr media
Those aren't ears, they are just gross misshapen tendrils that bob around as she moves. It's like someone was playing with a stretch tool and then...stopped.
I was gonna end with "Now let's have Jimmy Ginseng play us out," but I can only find this one bad picture of him, and it doesn't show his erhu:
Tumblr media
Here is some nice erhu music from someone else. Something redeeming in this godforsaken post:

Don't Worry Feyre, Darling: the relationship anxiety to coersive control pipeline
CW: emotional abuse, reproductive abuse
Creds: licensed counselor with focus in addiction, trauma, and gay stuff; experience in group and family counseling, mandated DV clients, and abuse victim support.
Before the mob comes: I am not pro or anti Rhys, and I think his contradictions say much more about SJM than anything. I also believe it’s possible for a fandom to reclaim/rewrite a character who has been massacred by an author.
We’re going to begin at Rhys helping Feyre during an extremely dark place in both their lives. We’re going to end at him withholding vital medical information from her for the sake of “protecting her”. But first, some context.
Inside all of the (amazing) drama around the 2022 movie Don’t Worry, Darling , was a story that is pretty well worn at this point: men deciding they know what’s best for women and giving it to them whether they like it or not. In the movie, Florence Pugh’s Alice lives inside a computer simulation where she is the modern equivalent of a 50s housewife: dresses, calisthenics, martinis, “making a roast”. (She also gets eaten out by Harry Styles but that doesn’t seem to be an explicit part of the world’s design.) The problem? She doesn’t know she’s in the simulation. Harry Styles, in between all the cunnilingus, drugged her and put her in the program against her will. Yikes! Why!
The movie explains that he believed their life in the real world was miserable, and that he was saving her from that by giving her this perfect life. She should be grateful, if anything! What he doesn’t tell her, but that we see, is that Harry Styles also seems to struggle with a sense of inadequacy for not being able to provide. He is failing to live up to personal and cultural standards of manhood but, instead of dismantling those standards, he makes it his wife’s problem by kidnapping and brainwashing her consciousness. Hm. Interesting strategy. Let’s see how it works out for him.
With Rhysand, his motives in the beginning are more understandable - he initiates rescuing Feyre from the very real danger of Tamlin and her own mental decline. He feels justified breaking whatever magic law because of his own experiences being trapped and believing people should have a choice about where they go and who they are. He emphasizes over and over that these choices are Feyre’s and that she has freedom with him. We see through ACOMAF that helping her gives him a sense of purpose after the trauma UTM. His friends remark on how Feyre brought him back to life, never questioning and even encouraging this pattern.
But Rhys clearly has a lot of anxiety about his relationships and closeness in general. He mentions on several occasions that people around him tend to suffer because of him, and how afraid he is of doing that to Feyre. She is very receptive to this and puts effort into proving him wrong. He finds safety in the bubble of their relationship that probably feels pretty fucking good. The unfortunate side effect of this is that instead of processing and resolving his own anxiety, he directs it through Feyre and his love for her. Meanwhile, he keeps his anxious maneuvers behind the scenes, like not telling her about the bond, taking her to the Weaver, encouraging her to learn to read, to train. It may be genuinely helping her, but there’s also this sense of ‘I know what you need better than you do’. And again, nobody questions this.
We flirt with this tension at the beginning of ACOMAF when Rhys enforces their bargain from UTM. As the reader, at that point, we are supposed to believe this is cruel of him. He interrupts her wedding for fucks sake, throw your shoe at him girl! But over time we start to feel like it’s okay because Feyre secretly wanted it, it’s ultimately for her own good. Rhys is the most powerful High Lord in history, I’m sure he could’ve figured out a way to break the bargain, but he didn’t. In fact he engineered a situation where she'd be at his mercy. Why? Because Rhys was worried about Feyre, felt her deteriorating through the bond. Because of that, he felt justified in coming to collect. Personally, I have no opinion about whether crashing the wedding was the right or wrong thing to do. But it does set up, at least in the world of the book, that removing someone’s autonomy is okay if it’s for their own good, if the ends justify the means. In fact, that overstep ends up being the road to Feyre’s life in the NC and her love with Rhysand, a love that is so great she willingly tethers her very life to it. Even in ACOWAR we see how their relationship is a way he regulates his anxiety *cough*battlefield blowjob*cough*. He gets used to Feyre’s health and happiness being his source comfort and can continue to avoid dealing with his own shit internally.
In his seminal work Why Does He Do That?, Lundy Bancroft, a specialist in treatment of abuse perpetrators, debunks the various myths about what causes abuse and why it happens. His thesis is disarmingly simple: people abuse because they believe it’s justified. He says one of the signs of abuse escalation is “a growing attitude that he knows what is good for her better than she does”. Bancroft also notes that abuse is so hard to spot because “most abusive men don’t seem like abusers” (emphasis his) and that abusive men have periods of being charming, funny, even kind. Abusive men often don’t see themselves as such, because the strategy works for them - they feel good when they displace their emotional problems onto someone else.(1)
And then Feyre gets pregnant with a baby that could kill her. Besides the fact they really should have talked about this before trying for a baby given Rhys is mixed race (Cassian and Nesta too, but that’s a whole other post), Rhys claims a sense of ownership over his wife and child almost immediately. He’s constantly being described as smug and glowing with male pride. Even when he’s not smarmy, he’s consumed with his own ideas about protecting them and can’t hear the protests of others. We see his anxiety morph into more overt control in attempt to handle the situation. He believes he’s justified in keeping the danger from Feyre because he doesn’t want to stress her out. But that is not about Feyre, that’s about Rhys. HE is scared, HE is lost, and so he makes a decision on her behalf to lessen the burden he’s already carrying, whether he’s aware of it or not. He must keep her in a happy bubble else how is he supposed to go on.
Don’t Worry, Darling is at least critical of this ‘I know better’ motive even if the movie is stupid, and Harry Styles gets some frontier justice in the form of a whiskey glass to the back of the dome. But ACOSF condones Rhys’ actions and even insinuates our main character is deserving of death for calling him out. Bancroft writes that “part of how the abuser escapes confronting himself is by convincing you that you are the cause of his behavior”. He wouldn’t HAVE to do this if you just TRUSTED HIM.
But here’s what I think. I think Rhys has walked down a path of using his relationship to balance his internal conflict. Anxiety is a force in every relationship, but with Feyre he must maintain her beautiful life where she never worries in order to feel safe himself. I can have empathy for this, kind of - he’s suffered significant losses and it’s understandable he feels protective of those he loves. I think about celebrities with non-famous spouses, and how they avoid talking about them because they don’t want the scrutiny. I believe Rhys thinks he’s genuinely doing right by Feyre. But Rhys is so averse to his own anxiety that he can’t let himself trust anyone else to resolve it. He can’t let go of Feyre as his safe space and almost condemns her to die because of it.
And this is how, ultimately, Rhys traps himself. He tries to create a bubble where Feyre can never leave him, and ends up signing both their death warrants. I hope the world of fan fiction can redeem him, because I really don’t think Sarah can.
And yes, I know it’s faerie porn and it’s not that deep. But this is a series marketed toward an audience at risk of abuse and intimate partner violence. Bancroft lays out key points at the end of the book that feel particularly relevant to the larger conversation:
“Once we tear the cover of excuses, distortions, and manipulations off abusers, they suddenly find abuse much harder to get away with.
If Mothers Against Drunk Driving can change culture’s indifference to alcohol-related automotive deaths, we can change culture’s attitude toward partner abuse.
Everyone has a role to play in ending abuse.
If you are trying to assist an abused woman, get help and support yourself as well
All forms of chronic mistreatment in the world are interwoven. When we take one apart, all the rest start to unravel as well.”

This Week in BL
Feb 2023 Wk 1
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
My School President (Fri YT) ep 9 of 12 - WinSound totally won me over in this ep. They were great. Their competitive style of romance, made me really happy. Double tsundere it’s so rare to get and not be annoying or depressing. Of course the mains were adorable too.
Never Let Me Go (Tues YT) ep 8 of 12 - Solid little episode. Perth in the pool, thank U BL gods. Peeling the shrimp to rope, always a favorite of mine. Some awesome couple flirting and a nice romantic sex scene. What’s not to like about this episode?
Hit Bite Love (Sat YouTube) ep 2 of 6 - King is fucking adorable. Burger is clueless and (apparently) entirely straight. Shogun is one of the gayest characters ever put in high school BL. Heda is kinda awesome, basically a chaos wingman. Matteo is interesting. I genuinely like the central friendship between King & Shogun a lot. Queer baby besties! It’s Ming & Wayo-esk but better. Holy KINK FEST outta nowhere, BLman! I’m getting total whiplash with this show. Very Make It Right. What does it want to be? Who tf knows but I’m into it, that’s for sure. It’s accomplishing something, which most pulps don’t.
609 Bedtime Story (Fri WeTV) ep 11fin - my backup computer is down so I haven’t had a chance to watch this yet. Hopefully but next week’s report.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
HIStory 5: Love in the Future (Taiwan Weds Viki) ep 6 of 10 (or 11&12 of 20) - Jonny’s hair is driving me nuts. Hai Yi’s behavior is confusing me too. Office boys remain totally adorable. Very doomy mid run ep 6. Ah Taiwan, how unpredictable you are.
Candy Color Paradox AKA Ameiro Paradox (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 7 of 8 - these weirdos make for very strange boyfriends. Frankly? K seems like a useless bit of business, if you ask me.
Individual Circumstances (Korea Thurs Viki) ep 5-6 of 8 - I’m just annoyed with Mr. Tsundere at this point, he’s gone from grumpy to mean. I just want him to have a really good reason for having disappeared without saying anything, and good does not mean “sensitive pathetic authorial feels.” You don’t abandon your best friend just because you fell in love with them, that’s an unforgivably shitty thing to do.
The End Of The World, With You AKA Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu (Japan Sun Gaga ep 1 of 8 - Stars Toshiki Seto (Senpai, This Can't Be Love). The world is about to be destroyed by a meteor, so Masumi visits his old uni library to read as much as he wants until the end. There he meets Ritsu, his player ex. It’s a bit awkward, and I’m not sure about the premise (it scares me that it might be sad). It’s racier, gayer, and has better kissing than i was expecting (again a sign it might go dark). Also Is Ritsu a big time bi-slut player or is that Masumi’s perspective? Regardless I’m intrigued if wary.
Tumblr media
Finished this week
The New Employee (Korea Weds Viki) ep 7fin - They are so cute it’s unbelievable. I thought it was a good office romance ending, if not a great Bl ending. All in all this is a darn near perfect nugget of an office romance BL, sweet and much gayer than we have any right to expect from Korea. Rainbow rice cakes forever! 9/10
Between Us (Sun iQIYI) ep 12fin - It’s a serviceable series about hot swimmers flirting and dealing with family drama in a sweetly earnest manner, but ultimately it squanders the talent in play. I would’ve preferred a cleaner narrative arc, less angst and more plot, fewer couples, and a shorter series. That said, there’s nothing objectively wrong, sub-standard, or off-putting about this show. And it has lots of consent and other good qualities. It’s fine. Watch along here. 8/10
I Will Knock You (Fri Gaga) ep 12fin - I did think a lot over why I disliked this one. Because on the surface it’s just your standard slightly terrible Thai pulp, and I’m usually not that mean about them. I think in the end it comes down to the uke who just seemed to never warm to the boy pursuing him, and never really actually wanted to be his boyfriend. Also terrible dead fish kiss. 5/10
Gossip
Apparently we have new scions (waves goodbye to BrightWin) - GeminiFourth: The Crown Princes of BL. If you’re wondering how their chemistry is so good (My School President), this article may explain it.
In Case You Missed It
Tumblr media
Caught up on 2020′s The Reason Why He Fell In Love With Me. (Gaga picked it up and I’ve been wanting to see it since it got announced in 2019.)
TRWHFILWM Series 1 - 2 teachers who work together at the same high school, one outgoing and the other reserved, start an affair. Gave me Ossan’s Love vibes and that is my least favorite kind of JBL. It’s just far too cartoonish and slapstick and I don’t like it. That said, it has several kisses, a happy ending, and they are cute together. So if you can this style BL, it you might like it.
TRWHFILWM Special - Completely ignores the first couple and the teacher premise, carrying over just one main character, and should have been a new BL (Boys Love flashbacks). I understand 2021′s season 2 continues this tactic. But I’ll watch it eventually.
Next Week Looks Like This:
Tumblr media
Not a lot actually, which is cool, I still got some 2022 catching up still to do. Why You Y Me, may be?
Starting:
Moonlight Chicken (Weds? YouTube) 1 of 8 -
My Beautiful Man S2 - ??? sorry I’m scared of this one and not really paying attention, it being Japan and a desirable property, I’m assuming it will either be impossible to find or just show up on my dash in 2 places at once.
Feb releases list is here.
2023 forthcoming BL master post. (see comments some are inaccurate, NOT UPDATED)
THIS WEEK’S BEST MOMENTS

i really thought fans who hate ascend astarion got his ending and then hated it. They are so pissed off about vampire bride groom thing saying it’s not canon, but then scream that he lied that tav/dark urge will hurt a bit when becoming a spawn. But it is true that it only hurt a bit, so i’m so confused. They refuse to see the evidences in the scene and how there was “ascend astarion still has soul” but no “tav/dark urge is not vampire bride groom.”
the bride theory exists in this weird state of canonisity where there are a lot of similarities in game to draw the conclusion, but because it isnt outright stated in game or by the devs to be true. i think thats intentional, its an rpg so they would want to leave some elements ambigious so you, the player, can decide what the story is based on your actions via roleplay. in this perspective, all theories have a certain level of validity in regard to canon.
as for it being painful, like. no duh? being ensanguinated isnt going to be pleasant. that doesnt make it morally wrong, and plus if your pc accepted lovitar's blessing its thematically satisfying (which is why i almost always choose "make it hurt" over "be gentle", you know its going to hurt. you welcome the pain. the pain becomes pleasure and vice versa. ascention and becoming his spawn is wearing the pain of trauma on your sleeve and not being ashamed of it.)
which, this really gets me when it comes to the idea that aa is inherently abusive. you could read it that way, but its just as well you can read it as two sickos being weird about their attachment to eachother. the rejection of the idea the player character can be an enthusiastic participant has somehow led to this, frankly insulting and cartoonish, depiction of a!astarion as a wife-beating rapist and the player character as a meek damsel. which i think is so wildly out of character. write a!a as toxic all you want, he is literally neutral evil, but for some reason people think an evil character has to be the most extreme characature possible, rather than the complex web of motives, flaws, sympathies, and personal standards a!astarion is.
this also denies the agency of actual people to extrapolate their own personal mean from the experience, what of a player character that would sacrifice anything just because astarion asked? what of a player character that was just as obsessed with him as he is with them? these ideas just dont compute in the minds of folks who insist you have to read astarion the One True Way
this got really rambly, but ultimately my point is that it is up to interpretation, intentionally so, and the team (welch not widthstanding lol) have pretty much expressed this exact sentiment. again, duh, because its a roleplaying game that encourages you to self insert.

HEY, SLEEPYHEAD
genre. fluff. warnings. subin overworks a lil. mention of food (meat stew). pairing. subin x fem!reader. wc. 678. request. no. a/n. for @chewryy my fav subin addict 🤓🤓
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Hey, I made dinner! Subin?” You called out from the kitchen, frowning when you heard no response from your boyfriend. You turned off the stove where a spicy meat stew was bubbling and wiped your hands on a towel. You hadn’t really seen Subin all day, you realized. You had said goodbye to him in the morning when he was rushing off to work, and by the time he got back home a little after lunch, you were out running some errands. He had shut himself in his study to work some more, and you knew he didn’t like to be disturbed.
You made your way to his study in search of him, pushing the door open wider than the small crack that was left to give Mimi easy access wherever she pleased. The first thing you saw was his computer playing the screen saver, colours swirling around in spirals.
You walked up to the desk chair, finding Subin curled up in it, his head supported by the comfortable headrest. You smiled at the scene of your boyfriend sleeping peacefully with Mimi in his lap, curled up in a comfortable ball. He must have had an exhausting day at work if he had fallen asleep this early.
You brushed your hand over his forehead, checking his temperature just in case. He didn’t usually get sick this time of the year, but you were sometimes a bit over conscious. The temperature seemed normal, though, so you relaxed a bit. You fixed some of his raven coloured hair that had fallen over his eyes and contemplated whether to wake him up or not. On one hand he looked so peaceful, and knowing how hard he worked, he probably needed the sleep badly. But he also needed to eat. You weren’t even sure if he had eaten lunch or not.
It seemed like you ultimately didn’t have to make a choice one way or the other, for Mimi chose for you. She got up and stretched, looking as grumpy as ever, but you adored her. She looked up at Subin and you followed her eyes. And then she rubbed against his head, occasionally kneading biscuits on his stomach. You chuckled at her behaviour.
The movement was enough to wake up a groggy Subin. He started petting her while still half asleep, resulting in her letting up on the headbutting and starting to purr instead.
“Hey, sleepyhead.” You said fondly, resting a hand on top of his head and giving it a loving rub. He normally hated it when you messed up his hair, but with how tired he was, he couldn’t bring himself to complain. It honestly felt pretty nice to feel your touch after the full day of work.
“I made dinner— the soup that you liked last time.” You had started massaging his shoulders gently as you talked, making him sigh and lean closer to your touch. His muscles seemed so tense, even as you worked out the knots, which made you frown. You’d have to lecture him about not working so hard again.
“That sounds nice.” He murmured, pressing a kiss to Mimi’s head before closing his eyes again, clearly having no intention of getting up.
You giggled fondly, “I’ll bring you a bowl. Just stay there.”
He hummed, mindlessly petting Mimi to stay awake. She rumbled softly, purring at the action. When you walked back into the room with a bowl of the steaming stew, the smell was enough to get your boyfriend to open his eyes. You heard his stomach rumble, making you both laugh.
“I didn’t realize how hungry I was.” He said truthfully, taking the bowl from you and taking the first spoonful into his mouth. You watched him eat, a small smile on your face the entire time. Even though you hated when he worked himself so hard he crashed in the middle of the day, you loved that you could make his day better with a hot meal, or a massage, or even just a hug. It was the least he deserved.

Fullmetal Alchemist Chapter 107
I've never commented on any of the title pages but I really want to talk about the one for this chapter.
Tumblr media
When I first saw this image, I made it my computer background for a long while. There's just something about people coming together for a united and just cause that makes me emotional.
And there's just the wonderful touch that this includes EVERYONE who is united under this cause, including those who could not or did not make it. We can see the hands (and hairbun) of Hughes, Foo, Havoc, Pinako, Winry, Buccaneer, and ...
Tumblr media
KIMBLEE!?! So yeah, Pride's actions last chapter disgusted Kimblee so much that he opted to throw his full support (meager as it was for he was just a single soul in Pride's body at that point) into stopping Father. If he was still alive, he more than likely would have fought alongside the heroes in the final battle.
An alternate joke interpretation: They're all playing rock-paper-scissors and Xiao Mei won cause she was the only one who chose paper while everyone else chose rock.
What's the point of having powers if you can't use them for more mundane purposes like protecting yourself from bits of debris.
Tumblr media
And that's a nice little detail that Greed is protecting Lanfan from it as well. He doesn't get along with her at all, but he's still going to protect her because it's just in his nature.
And look at the elegant craftmanship that could only be created by the beauty of Alex Louis Armstrong's Alchemy.
Tumblr media
Olivier Mira Armstrong finally trusts her brother to lead.
Tumblr media
There is so much out-of-context Royai bait this chapter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Major General Armstrong didn't get the memo that Scar is on her side. Her troops all have guns pointed at him.
Tumblr media
Now that there's nothing else for her to do, Olivier is able to take time to process Buccaneer's death and grieve.
Tumblr media
Before there was Smash Ultimate, this fight was where the phrase "Everyone is Here!" applied. Anyone who could make it participated in the final battle and it was the most hype thing ever.
Imagine you're playing an RPG where you only ever get to use 5 party members max during the whole game. Then you go into the final battle and you pick your 5 mains. And when you press Confirm, a message pops up saying "All party members must be selected."
This is a fight where the hype is due to how everyone is getting to participate. And it does an excellent job because the entire strategy is keep Father on the defensive and burn out his stone. He cannot attack and defend at the same time so it will take a whole army to beat him because anything less will not be able to keep up the consistent pressure.
Once again, I feel like a page is missing in the chapter. Ed is pinned and Father is going to try stealing his soul. And Al immediately decides to trade his soul so Ed can regain his arm. Maybe I'm just spoiled because the final battle in the anime managed to be even more hype and we have a scene of Al screaming and trying to crawl his way toward Father only to realize his bloodrune was about to be damaged by the crack in his armor.
Tumblr media
He understands his soul is about to get separated permanently, so he might as well use it to give Ed a fighting chance.
Every shot of Ed's right shoulder after really makes me wince. The metal socket for his automail is still there. His arm was just attached over it. He's going to need surgery after this is over.
Tumblr media
Ed transmuted the exact same spear he made in chapter 1 and he finally got to use it.

And seeing all this, this "ultimate power" being utterly defeated and everyone putting their hopes on Ed, Greed has a moment of self-reflection.
Tumblr media
He's spent his life trying to get that power Father has gained, and it is nothing. But he hears everyone cheering Ed on and he realizes that's what he'd like.
Greed is his own person, but he still has many of Father's faults. In particular, he can't feel content with anything because he's always looking up at those with more than him.
He wishes he had friends and companionship so strong that everyone would put their trust in him.
I used the below image and NASA's simulation of the 2023 eclipse to estimate how long it took the heroes to beat Father.

He was defeated roughly 35 minutes after achieving a goal he'd spent over 350 years working toward.

Never scare me like that again (Okiotaru) (KNY redraw) (Post swordsmith village arc)
Tumblr media
"Heh........Sure you will. Silly."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It them
So, yes, Vox took over my computer for a while, so that's why this took so long to post. But, I'm pretty sure I got it fixed & he's gone now
So, to celebrate my return, here's the cuties cuz I love them & Okiotaru forever
This takes place after the events of season 3. So, I'm sure we all know about what happened in season 3, so after that took place, Okimi took quite a beating as Kanamori noticed just how bad her injuries were from Gyokko & Zohakuten. So, she was recovering in the village infirmary for a long time. This wasn't the butterfly mansion
Okimi & Hotaru were both fine, & he was recovering just as much, but the entire time he wanted to know where she was & if she was okay & stuff like that. Ultimately making some injuries of his worse due to his worry LMAO
She was passed out for a while & when she came to, she saw him in the doorway & just waved at him, causing him to dart over to her to make sure she was alright. & she was!
Just.........AAAAAAAH! The way she looks at him makes me weak 😭😭😭
Here's the original scene, BTW:
Tumblr media
God, I love these two so much TwT
Really surprised to see people criticising the new TV show for its messaging (e.g. the Jobs episode overtly critiquing western work structures) when the YouTube episodes did... exactly the same thing?
Episode 1 (Creativity), Episode 3 (Love [read: religion]), 4 (Computers), and 5 (Food) were all commentaries on their subject matter. The fifth episode is the most obvious with its use of the "health shape" (versus the food pyramid) and the contradictory, confusing guidance on what food is "healthiest" to eat.
Episode 2 (Time) also kind of counts, but that's the more existential of the subjects, the overall point being to just not take time for granted because it moves on inexorably no matter what.
I think people get so lost in the theory-making with the YouTube shorts though that there's not enough focus given to the commentary happening in each individual episode. Nobody really talks about what Healthy was trying to achieve, fans instead obsess over Duck's image being on the food cans, the horror of Yellow Guy appearing to have eaten his friend, the fact Red is missing having had his mind blown in the previous episode... But on the surface, the creators are poking fun at the way food is advertised and talked about.
The behind-the-scenes narrative was something adopted by the fans, not really the true creative intent. I've always felt that, personally. And I think it's very telling that the creators didn't vibe with Wakey-Wakey if we keep that in mind. DHMIS on the surface has always been about commentating on current affairs (or topics that are prevalent in Western culture).
The reason it's difficult to pin down one single over-arching theory for the YouTube series is because each episode can exist independently, with the exception of episode 6. And the TV series repeats this. To put it simply, it feels a bit like a way of saying that the "lore" implications are a last thought, and not necessary to enjoy the series as a whole. If DHMIS wanted to expand its world and lore, it could have started with episode 6 and given us a very different series. What we got was how the YouTube series initially started but with a longer runtime per episode and more chance to the develop the three main characters. The extra set of stairs Yellow Guy misses before going back to his friends, however, feels like an invitation to keep theorising anyway, because it was the internet's obsessive need to find meaning in DHMIS that ultimately bought it its popularity.
But again, this then takes away from the "British-ness" of the series, which is really under-appreciated (and really being torn down by the loudest critics over here). I hope the series does well outside of fan interactions because as a jumping-in point for the uninitiated, it hits all the right beats for a quirky British comedy akin to The Mighty Boosh. It's just a little sad Channel 4 have parked it in an 11PM slot and right behind a Jimmy Carr-led panel show...
But yeah... YouTube's Episode 5 beats the audience over the head with its message just as much as Jobs does... The format is very similar too - even so far as Duck's discomfort with the subject matter that is being taught via the song not matching up with what is actually happening. He is the only one in Jobs to resist whilst Yellow Guy gets caught up (as he did in the YouTube episode) and Red Guy is for the most part, MIA (out in the "real world", playing his part as the company's manager).
The only key difference between the YouTube shorts and the Channel 4 programme is that, with a 23-minute run-time, the songs can't take up the entire episode and so as a consequence they aren't the most iconic takeaways.
What we've lost in quirky musical format, we've gained in character and relationship development for the trio though, and I'd argue that's not such a bad trade-off...
Anonymous asked:
I would love to meg's overblots
The first thing Idia noted was that his game lagged. A lot. The first time he didn’t question it but when the whole computer glitches, followed by flickering lights of the room, he knew something was wrong. That never happened, not in Ignihyde. He saved his progress then switched over to the security system he’s hard wired into and what he saw made him freak.
The monitor screens were all glitchy, some cameras not even working whatsoever. Idia started to work to fix the problems but didn’t get very far. All the electricity gave one flicker then turned off. The only light in his room were the blue cast from the flames of his hair. There was a backup generator but that wasn’t kicking in. Why wasn’t it kicking in?!
The house warden didn’t get much a chance to even ask himself that when he heard yelling from outside his room. Something was severely wrong and he didn’t want to leave the security of his room, but there’s no point in staying there when nothing worked! He gathered up courage and left his room to find utter chaos. The students were gathered in the halls and the common room but what stood out was he caught the familiar silhouette of her.
Idia let out a sigh of relief. She’s fine, the system was just malfunctioning (it shouldn’t, holy seven it shouldn’t be) but he stopped in his tracks at the sight of her.
Only one light worked and it cast its glow over her, which made everything much more dramatic. It’s like a scene from a horror movie, with panic all around the dorm but the antagonist was the Center of the storm. Idia always had been struck by her appearance, the curly brunette locks, the striking violet eyes, the hourglass figure. Even now, despite how scared he was, he was struck again.
The damsel locked eyes from across the common room. She was obviously overblotted, one could tell from the heavy aura that emitted from her. Meg was dressed in a deep purple dress adorned in gold accents, much like a Greek queen would wear. Even from the single light all the details were clear: he could see the unmistakable details of a skeletal arm of her left, the chains wrapped her right and draped around her waist like a belt. A cock of her head and she took a step towards him, as if locking in on him despite hundreds of other potential targets.
Idia gulped and thought of hiding back in his room and locking the door. It’s then he remembered what her ultimate magic was when a turret of once blue lights in a side panel of the wall suddenly glowed it’s brightness only to explode in a shower of sparks. A cackle left the princess as the light above her exploded in similar fashion, which caused more yells from the other two Ignihyde students. She took a few more steps forward, and the lights on the walls mimicked the actions of the first as she walked passed them. Some machines roared to life, only to break down, the sound drowning the panic of everyone. The smell of smoke filled the air but Meg didn’t seem to notice.
“Eep! H-hey, Meg! You’re wrecking everything!” The housewarden stammered as fingers clutched the fabric of his dorm jacket. His heart raced, almost threatening to escape his chest. Deep down he knew he could bring her back before she dies - except he also knew she already died.
Another laugh Met his words and he made a mistake of looking away as someone ran past him. When he looked back, he gave a small yell to find his girlfriend one foot away. Up close he can see just how dead she truly was: a rotting corpse. A member of the undead. “And what are you going to do about it, hot shot?” Meg challenged, her voice without its usual warmth it held when speaking to him. Idia swallowed thickly. His mind whirled with all the possibilities but she was unpredictable. This wasn’t a final boss in a game. She was the final boss in real life. He isn’t prepared for any real life situations! Yet it’s his job as both house warden, boyfriend, and guardian of the underworld to stop her. To save her.
But how? He never had any interactions with the previous overblots when they happened, he just heard second hand! So to face one himself - “I -“ The Shroud gulped, unable to turn away. “I’ll stop you!” Swallowing hard he reached out to grab both her hands and almost let go. Clammy skin combined with the cool, dryness of bone. She’s just the final boss. Idia suddenly grinned with a sudden burst of confidence. “I’ll save the princess and win this level!”
And he better do this fast. Before the fire spreads and before the overblot destroys her completely.
The first plan he’s forming is his mind was put on hold by her words. “You can’t save this princess. She’s already lost.”
I've finally finished an entire play through of Baulder's Gate 3, and boy what a ride the final portion is.
First off, the Wyrmway.
What.The.Fuck. Somehow this twist shocked me more than anything else in the game. Made me want to stab the Emperor even more than I already did.
Ultimately though, I decided to keep him around because I didn't want to deal with going to the House of Hope or dealing with the devil to get the other ending. Technically this is the Emperor's fight after all, might as well let him have some glory. Lets me not become illithid either.
Astarion's little ending scene makes me so sad though. Since I romanced him I thought there might have been a choice afterwards that maybe shows us two figuring out things that night. There was that book in Cazador's castle that detailed some research into curing vampirism, my character read it and everything that could have been a little easter egg for those who did all that. Or like I'm a sorcerer, and Gale is there too, there has to be some magical way to cloak Astarion in darkness.
In the end though, I ended up almost crying at Karlach's scene and made her bring us to Avernus so she could live. I guess my headcanon for my Tav is that she spent her time split between gallivanting around Avernus with Karlach, maybe getting back in touch with Dammon and maybe seeing if Raphael was willing to help us out in exchange for details of where the Netherstones and crown fell to fix Karlach's engine. And then we make it back to the city to meet up with Gale, Halsin, Jaheria, Minsc, and Lae'zel who in the meantime have been researching ways to cure or manage vampirism and then one night I end up coming across Astarion again and its a happily ever after. As for Wyll, honestly don't care but I assume he took over some of his now-dead father's duties.
Anyways, I was going to do a Dark Urge play through but... this play through alone took 90 hours. My previous not-finished play through was around 85 hours. Steam says I've been playing BG3 for over 200 hours, which I guess means the amount of failures in attempts of one battle or another is over 20 hours (rip me). My computer storage is struggling mightily. Also, Stardew Valley is getting another update with new events and I haven't tried any of the mods yet and watching youtube videos about the game is resparking my interest in doing a slow-life play through of all the popular mods. Also my storage is at critical capacity and I need to get back my over 190 GB of space.
I'll probably eventually come back to BG3, especially if they release any DLC. But the idea of having to slog through another round of Moonrise Towers makes me kind of want to vomit. Also my DU play through would probably have way less allies for the final battle and I barely managed to scrape by with as many as I had this time around.
Anyway 10/10 game, probably my game of the year. Shout out to the writing team for how much content they packed into a $60 game, its only eclipsed by a few jrpgs, and the character writing is frankly much better than most jrpgs. Although huge shout out to the voice actors, everyone absolutely killed it, no notes, it was fantastic. Also amazing queer representation, and not just player-sexual romance options. You can be non binary in character creation, you can be trans in character creation too, everyone's player-sexual, there's a good amount of poly representation (oh I forgot to mention up above but I also slept with Mizora lol Astarion didn't seem to mind), and Dame Aylin and Isobel are peak lesbian, not to mention the various amounts of other NPC queer relationships (especially among the gnomes). Fantastic game. It has a learning curve with mechanics, but highly recommend everyone to give it a try, there's also an easy mode too if even the normal difficulty fights are rolling your party (I had to drop it to easy mode for a few fights here and there, but usually normal isn't too hard).
20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by @feralkwe (thank you!)
How many works do you have on AO3?
11. I also have various ones scattered on ff.net, as well as lost to time on livejournal and a graveyard on my googledrive.
What’s your total AO3 word count?
77246. In terms of fic writing output, I’m one of those little pilot fish that hangs around friendly sharks.
What fandoms do you write for?
Mostly Dragon Age and the Arcana mobile game. I want to write more Mass Effect and I’ve done a Yasmin/Thirteen Dr Who ficlet. I used to write a lot of stuff for Naruto in my teens.
What are your top five fics by kudos?
A Little Tender Loving Care - Arcana. Smut. Giving Nadia a massage.
A Little Stronger You Thought - Arcana. A sparring practice with Nadia gets a bit hot and sweaty. Not actually smut this time.
Won’t You Cleanse My Soul - Arcana. And we’re back to Smut. The bathroom scene taken to a conclusion not in the game.
Not So Clean - Mass Effect. Smut again! Shepard and Traynor share a shower.
Alone At Last - Dr Who. After Ryan and Graham leave the TARDIS, Yasmin and Thirteen finally push past a barrier in their friendship.
Do you respond to comments?
Yes. I didn’t used to, but I love giving energy back to the people who took the time to write.
What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Back in my ff.net days, Leliana grieving after losing the Warden to the Ultimate Sacrifice. It implies Leliana dying as well. The angiest one on AO3 is Let it All Out, with Hawke spilling her guts to Leliana over everything that’s happened since they last saw each other in Lothering.
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Probably Alone At Last. Most of my one shots have a happy ending but this in particular.
Do you get hate on fics?
I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid it, although I have had a couple of ‘helpful’ comments telling me what I should do with the characters next (which is a guaranteed way to make me go in the opposite direction, not least so the commenter can’t claim credit for the idea).
Do you write smut?
Cough. See above.
Do you write crossovers?
I sort of am between Dragon Age games as I like bringing characters from one game and putting them in the setting of another. I’ve also been picking at a ‘Shepard crash lands on the Wounded Coast’ fic which I’m not sure will ever see the light of day.
Have you had a fic stolen?
Not as far as I know.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I’ve co-written a lot of storylines on forums, some of which have sprung out into me working on fics separately, but not collaborated on a fanfic before.
What’s your all-time favourite ship?
That’s a tough one. I adore Isabela/F Hawke, and ship Leliana very specifically with my jabby Siali Tabris, but if I was to pick one it would be Korra/Asami. When the first season of Korra came out I made a post on tumblr commenting on the chemistry between the two and really liking the idea of them together, but stating that the network would never, ever let it happen. (Child of the mid-2000’s ‘bury your gays’ wars here.) Having it come true was huge from a cultural standpoint, and I remember sitting at the computer sobbing my eyes out at the finale. It was so important to me so for that reason, I think they’ll always been my OTP even if I never write a fic for them.
Which now I want to. Dammit.
What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I really, really want to write more of Aliyah Hawke’s story. I love DA2 but Hawke as a protagonist never grabbed me by the brainstem in the way my Warden and Inquisitor did. I want to build her up some more. She has five chapters up on AO3 and I want to save her from the ashes.
What are your writing strengths?
I’m told I’m good at distinctive character voices. I like to switch around POVs a lot during fics to give different perspectives on familiar scenes, and the way I write inner monologues is very specific to the character who is the focal point at that time.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I’m not an especially funny writer. Some people have a real knack for turns of phrase that leave you rolling on the floor, and sadly I am not one of those people.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I have done this a lot as Nicolette is either Orlesian or French depending on what world she’s inhabiting at the point I’m writing her, and in reference to her faceclaim also has Indian/Rivaini ancestry, so I’d sprinkle her speech with bits of whatever her mother tongue is. I’ve learned to be increasingly careful about this because a) a lot of free translation tools are absolute arse and b) context is very important.
Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
I’m actually currently writing it. ‘I Cannot Fly, So Let Me Sing’ started as a joke of me taking my very pacifist wandering minstrel character who I have been playing for years and playing with the canon like a ball of yarn until I could justify making her Inquisitor. It has been great working her into the story and also trying to weave in other character POVs, but I am currently taking a bit of a break as I have two bridging/important infodump chapters to write before I can move onto the next bit and I am STUCK.
P1Harmony as your Boyfriend
Tumblr media
Hello friends! It's been a minute but I wanted to write this new scenario for Keeho's birthday, this group has become so special to me and I got the honor of seeing them live for the first time back in May! So here we go!
Warnings: mild language mild pg-13 content
Scenario: boyfriend, romance, fluff, slight angst if you squint, comedy
🖤Keeho🖤
Tumblr media
There's 2 sides to this boy
Keeho
And Stephen
Keeho is the fun, goofy, silly romantic boy
Loves fun dates with you
He will drop everything for you if it's possible
Laughs with you at stupid memes
Listens to music with you
The Sass!!!
But the other side
Stephen Yoon is a totally different person
He's passionate
Definitely the more bad boy side
Intense make out sessions
Usually his jealous side
You love both sides really
Fights with Keeho aren't common but they can happen
and Keeho looks scary when he's pissed
But they never last
Like you walk out and he gets mad.
Then it's like 3 in the morning and he's at your door step
Hooded up and as soon as you look at him
He's walking Inside, holding your face in his hands
Laying his head on yours
Repeatedly apologizing and telling you how much he loves you
"I think I'm gonna go crazy if I have to sleep alone"
🥴
🖤Theo🖤
Tumblr media
Taeyang is absolutely adorable
Like sweet as pie
So you've already got the best boyfriend ever
He's always cracking jokes with you
And making you laugh
He's the funniest member
He seems kind of shy at first
Which is how he was
But as you two started going out more
He started feeling more comfortable to be himself around you
Theo is definitely the kind of boyfriend to just wrap his arms around you and give you a quick kiss
It may be a couple of kisses that trails all over your face just to make you laugh
He will use this maneuver when you're having a bad day
Theo has a bit of a sassy side to him as well
So he's not afraid to roast you like a marshmallow at the camp fire!
Fights can one of both ways for Theo
You two are bickering and everything slowly blows over
Or you two are arguing and have to take some time away from each other
Either way it usually ends with one of you saying sorry
And then he won't let you go for a while after
"I know I have practice soon but i just want to hold you a little bit longer
🖤Jiung🖤
Tumblr media
My sweetest boy ever!!!!
Jiung is the ultimate boyfriend
I'm not being biased
Like he's the sweetest
He's so full of energy
So he'll have endless energy for you
He's definitely an arcade date guy
And you love watching him turn into a little kid when he's there
Jiung is always working on his computer, so he makes room for you too
He'll show you all the new songs he's working on for his sound cloud
And that voice
Melts you
Jiung will let every single person on this earth know how much he loves you
He's never afraid to show you off
You love it
Fights with Jiung are also rare
He can't stand to be away from you
But he won't let you leave
He'll close the door as soon as you open it and just wrap his arms around your shoulders
He'll hold you like it's the last time
"Can we please just forget about this stupid fight now?"
🖤Intak🖤
Tumblr media
There's only 1 way to describe Hwang Intak
A freaking flirt!
This boy knows he's good looking
So do you
But that's how he gets away with so much
He's always calling you Beautiful, pretty, and angel
"How is this beautiful person my girlfriend??"
You always blush and try and shake him off
And boy does he just love the shit out of you
Like you're his everything
You love watching him dance
Sometimes he'll have random dance sessions with you in the living room or kitchen
Like he loves just having you close
You definitely cried during his scene in the debut movie
If you know you know
Now a fight with Intak honestly isn't much
Again like little bickers
He loves you too much to give up on you guys
He just can't let you go
And eventually he'll just try to shut down the fight
"Jagiya... why are we even fighting?"
🖤Soul🖤
Tumblr media
Haku
Shota....
Buckle up honey
You're in for one hell of a ride
Keeho said
"He's just a strange kid"
Boy was he right 😐
Pretty sure Soul crash landed from another planet
He's a total weirdo
But! ☝️
He's your weirdo
From his ant tank, down to his weird obsession with hair dryers
You love every strange inch of this boy
He's definitely not afraid to be himself around you
In fact you're the one person he feels the most comfortable around
Soul may be particularly odd
But he's also like the sweetest thing alive
I have a feeling he'll fall asleep only of he has you in his arms
Like he can't let you go
If you move from those arms he starts making all these weird noises until you come back
So with that being said, can you actually fight with this kid?
Answer
Probably not
He just loves you too much .
🖤Jongseob🖤
Tumblr media
Okay Jongseob may be the maknae
But he's not baby
Not the way he spits straight fire
But like most Maknaes
Especially around his age
I always look at them as a first love troupe
So Jongseob and you have only been dating for a couple months
He asks his hyungs for everything
Like everything
The best kind of flowers
When's the best time to hold her hand
How to stop being nervous for a date
Things like that
Man does this boy love you though
Like he's so happy when you're with him
He loves subtle dates
Like you two just in the dorm having a movie night
His hyungs watching from across the room like proud dads
If you two get in any kind of fight
He's gonna panic
Run to his hyungs begging for help
They'll tell him exactly what to do
He will do everything they told him to do
Show up and tell you he was sorry
Maybe give you some flowers
Or a stuffie
Or both
Something to show how sorry he is and how he wants to make things work with you
And of course you can't say no to that face
No one can!
Hope you guys enjoyed this one! I'm working on some other scenarios and some time of day ones as well! P1Ece out my sunshines!
Watching the new episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution again.
Under a Read More for those avoiding spoilers.
+ Point of clarification: did they retcon that JJ & Will never moved to New Orleans, or are we to believe they moved away then back at some point? -> answered in Ep 2 Will says "since we got back".
+ Garcia's "I used to be good at that" re: putting on English mannerisms made me smile bc callback to when Emily was at Interpol
+ Luke is a sweet sweet guy. I like him a lot, though to be honest I don't pay that much attention to him (because my attention is elsewhere *cough* Prentiss).
+ something really rubs me the wrong way about those "hers" antidepressant ads. They seem kind of creepy / dystopian?
+ I hope we get to know some of Penelope's new friends a bit.
+ it still really cracks me up that Garcia uses such tricked out GUIs on her computer. That shit takes up RAM and makes everything hard to see. Because computer nerd on (network) TV. But also, good for her.
+ the whole SOAR concept is too funny. No one born before the millennium has access besides PG? Does she code and maintain the whole thing all by herself (obvs not)? Are the engineers also only 22 and younger? (this would become a legal issue of ageism in hiring!) Also "unhackable"...so there's some kind of elaborate and potentially invasive verification system to prevent catfish accounts? Really. And once you age out of SOAR are you just thrown to the 30-50 feral hogs with the rest of us?
+ EMILY PRENTISS YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL GORGEOUS SHOWSTOPPING I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU
+ second time around I continue to appreciate AJ Cook's well muscled shoulders.
+ I'm very happy they got Zach Gilford for this role. Who knows if the writing will ultimately be good (lmao), but he has the range.
+ Director Noodle at it again, throwing a tantrum because Emily Prentiss did not bow to his will. Section Chief Foxiest Silver Fox does not simply roll over and obey (in her professional life at least).
+ lmao the not-an-Oscar-Wilde-quote quote attribution is so unnecessarily dumb
+ Emily & Tara are a great duo. Friends, crime-fighters, (etc!), they just stand up well to one another. The vibes are fabulous. It's the dynamic closest to what Emily had with Derek, that comfortable teasing and trust.
+ also noting that Tara asks Emily if she knows Rebecca Wilson, and apparently she does - enough to know she's at the DOJ. Perhaps they've worked on case(s) together before. Orrrrr maybe they met at some LGBTQ Feds networking event. 😏 Emily does give her a very warm smile when Rebecca shows her face at the BAU.
+ The way Zach Gilford asked unsub #2 "are you disobeying me?"............I don't know, it made my ears perk.
+ in the Garcia / Rossi scene, there is much to enjoy. The insight into Garcia's mindset. Rossi's resigned "I did. I kept falling asleep." I can't help but laugh at PG fully saying "Licensed Clinical Social Worker." I appreciate the specificity, but it's a whole mouthful!
+ fucked up that Garcia's login credentials still work. Any self respecting agency would make you change your password every 3-6 months at least, not to mention she's No Longer Employed There. But who needs real administrative mess when you can have loony toons (plot-based) administrative mess?!
+ Tara wearing a lot of plaid and window pane patterns. Aside from the obvious, it's just a nice costuming choice that remains kind of conservative but sets her apart from the others.
+ Most of the wardrobe is in blues and browns and grays. I wonder if this will change as time goes on (i.e. will Garcia bring the color back) or if that's going to remain through the whole season.
+ Okay, but did y'all also catch the weird look that Rebecca & Luke exchanged in this briefing room scene? It seemed like more than "close the door". Is there some kind of history there?
+ Oh this show is so silly!!!!! So silly, and it still makes me happy. Incredible.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: 9/10
James Gunn has crafted a terrific trilogy that transcends the MCU, forging its own unique and highly influential legacy. This "finale" for the original group is a satisfying and emotionally affecting entry, filled with incredible action setpieces, character moments, and Gunn's twisted sense of creativity and humor and impeccable needle-drops.
It is incredible that Gunn has managed to take a character like Rocket Raccoon (an obscure D-list character in the Marvel pantheon) and make him into, not only a household name, but an emotional core of series. Vol. 3 focusing on Rocket's tragic backstory helps to provide a unique trajectory for the film, mostly avoiding the "stop the bad guy from destroying/conquering the universe" trope in exchange for a smaller, more personal story of revenge, trauma, and redemption. The middle of the film meanders a bit with protracted side-quest, and new characters such as Adam Warlock feel a bit sidelined, but ultimately the film coalesces into a fantastic third act, providing everyone with some moments to shine. The High Evolutionary is also such a wretched and effective villain with no redeeming qualities. Despite being less powerful than other antagonists, he is by far one of the most interesting that the guardians have faced, and there isn't any attempt to make him sympathetic or relatable. Those sensitive towards depictions of animal cruelty are warned. He does some absolutely heinous stuff, making you understand why Rocket is (according to Gunn) the "saddest creature in the universe".
The entire cast do their best work yet in each of their respective characters. Nebula in particular has always been a favorite of mine, and watching the character's growth across multiple Guardians and Avengers films is one of the most interesting aspects of the entire MCU. Gamora is given an interesting role here, having turned into a complete a-hole due to the time-travel shenanigans from Avengers Endgame. The film thankfully avoids giving her a sappy boyfriend-girlfriend reconciliation with Peter Quill. Drax continues to be a doofus, but shows his worth as a kind parental figure in the end. Mantis is given a new familial relationship with Peter (thanks to the Holiday Special), which changes their dynamic quite a bit, also allowing her to mature. Kraglin and Cosmo the Dog also make a fun pairing in their scenes, and are given greater emphasis than before.
Special mention must be made of the wonderful practical effects on display here, showcasing a variety of fun creatures and aliens and settings. The computer effects also stand out here by providing Rocket (and other CG characters) with genuine pathos and expression. This is the most polished looking live-action comic book movie in recent years, avoiding the poor compositing and rushed looking VFX that plagued Quantumania and Wakanda Forever.
There is a fantastic "oner" hallway fight in the third act that is perhaps the best action scene in the MCU, and it perfectly encapsulates the unique cinematic joy that Gunn infuses into these movies that so many other MCU entries lack. These are James Gunn films first and foremost. It should be no surprise that when directors are allowed to use their own creative voices in their work, that the work becomes enjoyable beyond mere franchise appeal. Of all the MCU entries since Endgame, this one feels the most like an actual movie made by someone with a clear vision.
On a closing note, I will never hear "The Dog Days are Over" by Florence + The Machine the same way again.
X2: X-Men United (2003)
Tumblr media
There have been A LOT superhero movies since the genre really blew up in 2000 with X-Men. The fact that X2: X-Men United remains one of the best means a lot. There aren’t many sequels which top their predecessors but this is one of them. Full of great character moments with the characters we've come to love and with plenty of contestants for new favorites, it’s got action, suspense and many reasons to come revisit it over and over again.
After Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) - a teleporting, blue-skinned mutant - attempts to assassinate the U.S. President (Cotter Smith), he allows William Stryker (Brian Cox) to shut down Charles Xavier’s school for mutants. Actually, Stryker's goal isn't merely to capture the mutants; he wants Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and his mutant tracking computer, Cerebro. With their leader gone and the students on the run, the X-Men have no choice but to turn to Magneto (Ian McKellen) for help.
Tumblr media
When we met Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), the film took us for a loop by revealing that the most important mutant at Xavier's school was Rogue (Anna Paquin), not him. This twist made us even more eager to learn about Logan’s past. Was his adamantium-laced skeleton and those mechanical retractable claws (the series hadn’t yet retconned these to be a natural part of his mutation) some kind of ultimate weapon program gone wrong? Something forced upon our amnesiac hero? The answer comes in the form of the mutant-hating Stryker, a great baddie that poses an extreme threat because he’s smart and ruthless. There are some deliciously gross and squishy moments waiting for you as you piece together the lengths he’ll go to. It gives me the willies thinking about what he did to his mutant son - almost as much as learning what his son did to his mother.
There are many scenes to make your skin crawl. Magneto’s escape from his plastic prison (a favourite moment of mine), the final battle between Wolverine and Lady Death Strike (Kelly Hu), Stryker’s domination of Magneto…. you probably didn't expect those fom an action superhero film. Neither did you foresee the emotional blows. Bobby “Iceman” Drake (Shawn Ashmore) betrayed by his brother, the children being taken away by Stryker’s forces in the middle of the night, Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) teasing Wolverine with her shapeshifting powers, Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) sacrificing herself... There’s a lot going on. A lot to love.
It’s hard to pick a favourite thing about this follow-up. You suddenly find yourself routing for the mutant terrorist Magneto because we’ve been given an even bigger, more sinister foe for our heroes. That’s no small feat. X2 is a confident picture with a lot of balls in the air and director Brian Singer (who’s fallen out of favour today but was a wizard behind the camera) keeps them all afloat, all perfectly distanced to keep the balance and the excitement flowing smoothly.
Tumblr media
What’s there NOT to like in X2? It builds on the success of the first in so many meaningful ways. You see the younger X-Men grow into adults, the love triangle between Jean, Wolverine and Scott “Cyclops” Summers (James Marsden) get even more tangled, heroes like Storm (Halle Berry) in a whole new light and villains suddenly become heroes. This film gives you a lot to digest, making it a superhero adventure you eagerly return to over and over. (On Blu-ray, May 19, 2019)
Today I'm Thinking About...
I've been so busy I haven't been able to keep up on this even thought I'm definitely Still Thinking About Things but I do want to get back to it but I really shouldn't now BUT I love last night's idea SO MUCH that I'm going to scrawl down at least a few words of it.
(note for various trigger warnings, but this is 2ha and if you've read the book, well, it's no tws that weren't in the novel. except the mentions of drug use/addiction, I guess)
Modern 2ha AU where Mo Ran has a really messy teen years/young adulthood. (read more)
His first crush, Shi Mei, ends up drawing him into a lot of toxic behavior, coerced sex work, drugs, you name it, he's a fucking mess. The worst part is it fucks with his memory; some things he did, he remembers, other...not so much...and a lot of them, he has the vague sense/knowledge He Did Something Terrible but he can't recall the details (which is probably for the better, sometimes). Finally, he of course gets arrested...and he gets lucky. Hell, he gets about as lucky as a disaster like himself can get (spoilers: it's not luck). He gets a great public defender and a lenient judge and while initially he's on the hook for all kinds of charges (not least of which - sex work, drug dealing, possession with intent to sell, aggravated assault, theft, rape...) most of the charges end up dropped or reduced, and because of a clear history of how this abuse started when he was young, he's sentenced to community service and rehab instead of prison. It especially helps that the assault and rape charges end up getting dropped (Mo Ran tells his lawyer, who tells him NOT to tell anyone else, that he remembers just enough to be POSITIVE he's guilty of both).
He gets to start over, fresh, in his mid-20s, with his fragmented memories and his regrets and a bone-deep determination to help other people. His community service, done at an all-service non-profit in a poor neighborhood, offers him a job in the soup kitchen after, and he ends up one of their best advocates - he's great looking, charismatic, insanely hard working, a skilled chef, brilliant, strong - and he helps them build relationships with organizations that can help them, bring in donations, distribute what they get, the whole package. And, of course, he gets friendly with the other people who work there.
Like Xue Meng, the incredibly gruff son of the head of the non-profit's board who acts like a dick but actually really gives a damn.
And Ye Wangxi, the trans man who runs the organizations LGBTQIA+ outreach program.
And Nangong Si, the dilettante rich boy who Definitely Isn't Helping with fundraising and Definitely Doesn't Have Feels for Ye Wangxi.
The list goes on and on, but of course there's...
Chu Wanning. Who has to be the LEAST charismatic, personable, friendly person in the entire organization. He's standoffish, aggressive, often off-putting, and generally forbidden from attending charity events and really anything public, but who behind the scenes is one of the hardest working SoBs there. He's in charge of tech for the organization - both their internal technology and their tech-for-the-public program, which helps the people who come there with everything from vehicle repairs through providing free computers/tablets/smart phones through tech support (Xue Meng ends up doing a lot of the actual tech support, because as tsundere as he is, he's still easier to talk to than Chu Wanning). The organization wouldn't function without Chu Wanning.
Initially, Chu Wanning wants nothing to do with Mo Ran - talk about a man too pretty for his own good (as if that couldn't refer to CWN too...) - but Mo Ran is nothing if not a persistent, overly friendly husky, and ultimately Chu Wanning ends up genuinely befriended, largely against his will, though when he finally gets fed up and says as much, and Mo Ran finally leaves him alone for a while, Chu Wanning of course ends up missing him and ultimately seeks him out again. That's about the point when, to Chu Wanning's shock, Mo Ran explains that if they ARE going to spend time together again, Chu Wanning needs to understand that Mo Ran's feelings are way beyond platonic, that he'd love to have a more personal, ideally romantic and/or sexual, relationship with Chu Wanning, and that while he doesn't need Chu Wanning to reciprocate, he'll feel disingenuous if he continues to be Chu Wanning's friend without knowing.
(From Mo Ran's point of view, he's been insanely obvious about this, but also he's been terrified of saying it explicitly because he knows in his heart that he is A Bad Person, all the appearance of virtue with none of the actual virtue, the perfect inverse of the stoic Chu Wanning who everyone sees as cold and aloof but who actually has a heart of gold and has never done wrong in his life.)
(From Chu Wanning's point of view, he has never been more blind-sided in his life. Who. Could POSSIBLY. Have Feelings. For HIM????)
After a little deliberation, and after an initial "no," Chu Wanning finally does take the hand that Mo Ran has offered him, and they start tentatively, hesitantly dating. Neither of them has ANY experience at this (Chu Wanning has always been single; Mo Ran's only relationship, while long, was so abusive that if anything he aims to model "always do the opposite of what I did then"), so it's definitely rocky. Especially so because, though Chu Wanning can't bring himself to admit it, he's only not a virgin because he's a rape victim - a stranger assaulted him one night when he was walking him, forced themselves on him, left him shattered and he's been slowly putting himself back together ever since.
But, despite all the hurdles, little by little, they grow close, they fall in love, they decide to be physically intimate...
...they're in Mo Ran's bedroom...
...they're taking off each other's clothes...
...Mo Ran is saying the sweetest, most genuinely affectionate words, and while Chu Wanning is constitutionally incapable of saying such things back, he absolutely feels them, he is as completely in love as he is loved...
...and there, on Mo Ran's revealed chest, is a long ragged scar that is all too horrifyingly familiar to Chu Wanning.
Because he made that scar himself.
When he tried to fight off his attacker, his rapist.
And then he can see it, so clearly, how that emaciated, sunken-eyed youth has, a decade later, grown into this man before him.
And this man, Mo Ran now, is wonderful.
And, unbeknownst to Mo Ran, most of the reason Mo Ran has had the opportunities he had is that Chu Wanning advocated for him (...he was a young public activist/non-profit worker then, and very passionate...), helped arrange him having competent representation, dropped the assault and rape charges, couldn't bring himself to take the stand but wrote a letter in favor of lenient sentencing that was read to the judge and jury and entered into evidence.
In that instant, ALL this reality crashes in on Chu Wanning - that this is his attacker, that he's in love with his attacker, the cruel irony of them reuniting, getting friendly, becoming a couple, all the memories of that awful night that he's tried, with mixed success, to process, and it's so much, too much...
...and, for Mo Ran's part, while he doesn't deserve much in the way of sympathy all things considered, there is something awful about the heartbreaking moment when Chu Wanning takes one look at Mo Ran's bared body and goes catatonic in a panic attack.
Needless to say, it takes them a LONG time to recover from this.
But...they get there eventually, of course.
File this under "story ideas I definitely will never have time to write but that will definitely be entertaining me a lot for several weeks to come."
