I'm a different anon, but I kinda suspect part of the reason the impression of Drizzt as an edgelord and general hostility to him is because to an unfortunately sizable part of the tabletop l roleplay scene the genetic determinism is a good thing. 'Why would you play a drow to be good? Just make an elf like everyone else, you just want a traumatic backstory' kind of thinking. I've unfortunately known many a RP community where you would be laughed out and ostracized if if you played stuff outside of its assigned role: drows can only be evil, orcs can only be brutes, and don't even ask them about their opinion on tieflings.
I have seen what seem to be the most boring motherfuckers on god's green earth go "you need REASONS to have characters other than human, otherwise just MAKE THEM A HUMAN!" and those were also self proclaimed Realmslore nerds, so like. Yeah, I can buy that as a reason. Lots of people still proudly say that 3rd edition is their favourite lorewise despite 3rd edition being legendarily horribly hardline in a number of ways including strict rulings on alignment and which kinds of races you 'should' play 9_9 I've also heard from folks active in the oldguard scene that Drizzt was uhhhh real fucking controversial among the people who considered themselves vocally the 'main audience' (ie gatekeepers lol) to the point people got aggressively opposed to 'good drow' existing and used Drizzt as a bludgeon to be like NO, DRIZZT IS THE ONLY GENETICALLY GOOD DROW, YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE A GOOD DROW, SHUT UP ABOUT DRIZZT, which is the exact opposite of his books in a really depressing way;;;
So I can see why people would cling to determinism as a way to filter out people who have character concepts they don't like, unfortunately :/

HOW HARD IS IT TO CHECK THE SHAPE OF DROPPED SCALES? THE COLORS? THE SHARPNESS?
I CAN'T BELIEVE WE DIDN'T SEE IT SOONER. SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR THE NUMBER AND CONFIGURATION OF TOES. OR EVEN WHAT THE DAMNED FACE LOOKED LIKE.

the zombie boy, the worst man alive, objectively just some guy, no one but me gets him because i've poured an unhealthy amount of 'hey, just like me!' on him <3 he's a stinkbug in human form and i love him, i WOULD switch sides on the street to not have to meet him under a 2m circle, he's that rancid, xo
booker
Tumblr media
booker! what can i say except that he's particularly pathetic which is entertaining but also weirdly competent in that high-functioning depression way that makes him interesting. i wish the fandom took more time to think about characters in shades of grey instead of absolute because he is a cool character!! and he's good because he's done terrible things and because he was justified in his own eyes

WIP Intro: Tales of the Old Forest (Tales 2)
Welcome to The Tales, a series with an ending but no true beginning. For the sake of finding them on here, they’ll be numbered, but start where ever you like!
This is the intro for “Book 2″
All works on this writeblr are 18+. Read at your own discretion.
Working Title: Tales of the Old Forest
Genre: Fantasy/LGBTQ+
Slice of Life-ish/Lore & World Building Heavy
Story Warnings: mild fantasy violence, some blood, mentions of arson, mentions of death, alcohol use, details descriptions of anxiety/panic attacks, night terrors, and PTSD related symptoms.
Summary:
Cedric knows how wide the world is. He’s spent his entire life within the walls of Oldguard pouring over the countless stories, botanical manuals, and detailed maps of what lies beyond the narrow library window. He’s seen glimpses of the sky and it’s different shades, and he’s heard about the different seasons and how things change throughout a year.
And now, finally, he has been given his first assignment as a mage and will set forth into that same world he’s read so much about.
The assignment brings him to Willowwick, a cliff-side hamlet beside a lake that’s seen an increase in strange phenomena. But the longer Cedric stays there, the more secrets he unearths, and the more he digs, the darker those secrets become.
Except those secrets have nothing to do with the peaceful little hamlet.
Excerpt below the cut:
Cedric emerged from the treeline into a wide glade with a dry dip in the earth where a decent-sized pond once was. The ground here was barren in comparison to the village with its tall grasses and wildflowers. There were no such flowers here. Dying yellow moss clung desperately to stones and other surfaces. The earth was bare dirt. He could sense the rushing of water, but it was deep and hidden. Even the trees at the edge of the glade seemed like they were starting to suffer. Whatever sickness was here was seeping into the rest of the forest.
Surely, this was the source of everything that was beginning to go wrong in the village. He thought of recording this and leaving. Reporting it and calling his mission complete. After all, it was Oldguard’s place to deal with such matters. A mage's job was just to identify and report, never to intervene.
But at the back of the glade was the yew tree he had seen in The Blackness from Bau's home. The branches stretched up to the sky, beyond all the other fingertips of the surrounding trees. He could tell it had once been a beautiful tree that glowed with life and shared that life with the lands around it, but now it was sorrowful and slowly dying. He couldn’t bring himself to turn away from it.
Cedric approached and ran his fingers over the bark. It had once been a rich brown but was now fading to a sickly yellow streaked with gray-brown patches. The leaves still managing to cling to the branches overhead were twisted and curled and orange. There were no berries to be seen in its branches. No nests of birds. No singing insects. The tree bled death around it, warding away others that might become ill as well.
Cedric's heart ached for the tree. He flattened his hand against its trunk and leaned his forehead against the bark, closing his eyes. "What can I do for you?" he asked softly, his voice a whisper on the breeze.
Power pulsed at his feet, a faint and weak but very present heartbeat. In the Blackness, he saw tendrils of soft blue-green and green-yellow energy. It was warm and beautiful and held stories that it wanted to share but this tree was too weak to speak. When he reached out to the energy, pain and sadness weighed his stomach and filled his throat, choking him. He opened his eyes, tears beginning to stream down his cheeks. It couldn't ask him for what it needed, only weep.
Duty called him back to Bau's. To make his report. To prepare to leave.
But this yew was crying to him, pleading with him, begging for help.
And, selfishly, he wasn't ready to return to the walls and narrow windows of Oldguard.
He wanted to stay.
“I’ll help,” he promised and patted his hands on the tree. “But... No magic,” he added as he looked over his shoulder at the barren glade, wondering how hard farm work could be.

My Series is here! The Tales
Bonjour!
I’ve finished plotting out my series at last! I don’t have any big WIP intro put together to share, but I got excited and wanted to share the list of titles in the series and talk a little bit about it (speaking of talking about it, send me asks! feel free to spam me with questions, I’ve been gone for so long from writeblr and am excited to be back).
So first, the different books within the Tales:
Tale(s) of...
1. Wolves
2. Two Kings
3. The Necromancer
4. The Sky Pirates
5. The First Enchanter
6. Aravir and the Afterworld
7. The Last Enchanter
8. The Old Forest
9. Oldguard
10. The First Professor
11. The Guardians
12. Varlais
13. Clockwork Cities
14. The Assassin
15. The Heart Thief
16. The Artificer
17. The Ram
Ram!? (one, why is your name there) you might be asking, I’ve read some of these, I know there’s an order, is this the order? Why isn’t it in order?
Because while the events in this series are chronological, the series itself is not. You could read this in any order and fully understand what’s happening in each book. But why write a series like that? Don’t you wanna control the cameos, the knowledge, the bread crumbs?
No. No, I don’t. I was inspired to write a series like this because I played all my favorite video game franchises out of order. And you know what? I loved the emotional impact. I loved watching friends play in different orders and have a whole different experience. I loved the feeling of reveal that came with it. There were moments that made me cry because of the order I learned about the game’s world in. And so, I attempted to put that in a book series. Will it be successful? I dunno, you tell me!
I’ll be self-publishing this series, starting with the first 3 completed stories. Which 3? Your guess is as good as mine, I’m writing them all at once.
See ya in the excerpts! And again, have no fear of that ask box. I’ll be waiting.
Ciao!
(learning Italian now too, long story, see the boyfriend tag)

There’s a load of weird sexism towards female muses in roleplay. As far as the eye can see. However, I’ve only seen one flavor talked about – the dismissive or creepy behavior FROM other roleplayers. Which is fine to address. But we’re doing female characters a huge disservice by not talking about the other one: when the writer is at fault for creating a one-dimensional stereotype. Usually a boring satellite love interest with no goals or desires of their own outside of a ship, with the personality of an over-inflated sex doll. Whenever I have the misfortune of encountering characters like that, I whisper to myself, “I’m so glad you think this is what women are.” I’m not against women having their own sexual agency (as long as it’s not sexualized – think of what an oldguard sci-fi writer would do and do the opposite) but the amount of worth I see writers put on their female character’s vaginas rather than a personality or interesting backstories is both disappointing and disgusting. Do better.

Future of work
Tumblr media
Here is one more short write-up on much debated topic of times - how will work be done in future and the management styles that are appropriate. Read….
The articles on future of work and management styles seem to be garnering lot of interest from people across the board. And that’s not surprising, given the impact it has on the lives of the working people and not just work life.
A large section of people denounces ‘command and control’ style as not being in synch with the current realities. They instead recommend leaders / managers to be coaches and enablers.
Not that antiquated idea of 'command and control' have not been called out in the past. But it is so much more topical today. That explains the level of traction around this discourse and the opportunity to bring about sustainable change. It's somewhat like #technology and #digitilization that had been advocated for more than a decade, as a critical lever for the modern day businesses. But progress around adoption was painfully slow. And about an year into the pandemic, these penetrated and found their place in the vitals of business, not to speak of the support services. So, necessity is not only the mother invention. It’s also a mother of adoption. Gen Y and Gen Z grow up in an environment of freedom and choices available to them. The parents also connect with them as friends. It's no surprise that they have been clamouring for similar environment at workplace, much to the displeasure of some of the #oldguard , not in terms of age but the #mindset . The experience of the last two years has debunked any myth about close #supervision helping productivity. The young workforce is not willing to buy this argument any more. No wonder that the question - Is #WFH available in your company ? has become so common in #interviews. Gen Y and Gen Z are the #workforce of the #future . Not acknowledging their expectations and aspirations would be like trying to swim against the tide. Hope the good sense prevails and the #managers and #leaders #unlearn the #mindset of #command and #control and #relearn to be #enablers and #coaches . And if we we take it seriously, we can make it happen. The adoption of technology and digitization during pandemic is a case in point. Love to hear your perspective.

Hello, I was wondering if you had any adventure prompts or lore having to do with the Battle Master archetype. What kinds of quests would include learning new maneuvers and become a student of war?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ally: Dulcin of Daelford, last of the Oldguard
“The Songs all speak of a warrior’s strength, but let’s not kid ourselves; Its wits that’ll carry you through the battle youngster, wits and control and pure dumb luck. Master those three things and by the time you’re my age all you’ll need your strength for is to carry your grief for those who didn’t.”
Setup: Locals know Dulcin as a trustworthy if untalkative neighbor, who’s taken up the unenviable job of maintaining the signal house half way up the mountain, keeping watch for marauding giants or other great threats. Those that know him well speak of an upright soul of military bearing, quick to lend a hand on those rare occasions he makes his way down from his lofty perch to town for supplies.
What few suspect is that Dulcin is in fact an unsung hero of the past age, a steadfast warrior who put his life on the line time and time again to ensure that generations that followed would grow up in a time of peace and plenty. Dulcin fought dark lords and demon queens and traveled to the far corners of the world following forgotten prophecieis, only to return home once his adventuring days were done to keep vigil over his mentor’s grave.
The old hero has a few battles left in him, and if the party encounters him in their journey and tell him of the threats they face, they can expect to see him counted among their allies when they face down their final villain.
Adventure Hooks:
Half buried under an unexpected blizzard while trying to cross the mountains, the party is rescued from the scouring winds by Dulcin on one of his patrols through the peaks. Inviting them back to his signalhouse to wait out the storm, the party can swap news with this leathery old veteran and enjoy some of the fine vintage he’s put away for just such an occasion.
Dulcin will take an interest in the more martial characters of the party, and will offer to show them a couple tricks that’ve got him through some tough scrapes from time to time. The old dog isn’t the best teacher, but he knows the material backwards and forewords, always pairing his lessons with hardwon advice on the de-glorified, practical side of a battle. Catching opponents unaware, stripping them of offensive and defensive capabilities, forcing them onto the backfoot without ever over extending yourself: these are all lessons that he’ll attempt to drill into his student head again and again.
Like all heroes, Dulcin has had his share of magical artifacts, and while most have been lost over time or passed on to the more deserving, he still keeps one in reserve: The Hand of Tyr, an adamantine gauntlet said to have once been the possession of the god of righteous battle himself. The old champion never QUITE figured out all of the gauntlet’s abilities, but it seemed to be able to halt foes in their tracks with a gesture, as well as break any weapon it gripped, without hurting the wielder. Knowing it was something special, Dulcin hid it in a cave that is only accessible during the dangerous mountain thaws.
Having traveled with quite a few other heroes in his time, Dulcin is interested in seeing where his old party ended up. Perhaps these youngsters could go check in on an old friend or two? If they’re in the area of course.

gonna be briefly petty on main here cause i've blocked this person since I got into this fandom and i never want to interact with them ever, but I genuinely do not know why you'd trust the person w/ the canon artemis url when they keep dressing up their opinion as fact, cherrypick citations if they use them at all, and keep going onto the posts of new people to be like ACTUALLY THE BOOKS SUCK AND THE AUTHOR SUCKS in what seems to be some bizarre attempt to control new folks' reading experience.
Like I know they're an oldguard BNF and all but holy shit, if I'd interacted with that person literally at all upon getting into the fandom I would have been turned off these books forever. Genuinely don't get it tbh.

Greetings Mr. Briarworth and associates,
Ever since your report upon your domesticated bullfango, Timtim, my two young daughters have kept requesting that I "get a Timtim update" from you. They have not seen a full grown bullfango as our village hunters are quite adept at keeping the herds away from our grazing fields and farmlands.
Sometimes I fear that they'd sneak out one day and somehow catch a rather angry bullfango as a pet. If you have the extra time, (I know you are all quite busy with your sanctuary) I would appreciate an update on Timtim for my kids. Maybe words from a person who works amongst monsters will convince them a monster is not a pet or friend.
Sincerely, a tired father
Leo sleeps with a pig.
Tumblr media
No, like literally sleeps with that pig. He let that thing sleep at the foot of the bed once and we haven't had peace since. -Oleander
Oh for goodness sake Ollie, people are going to think I condone domestication of wild animals with how you write about Tim Tim.
Tumblr media
Tim Tim is now a rather large Bulldrome and we're very pleased to keep him at the sanctuary for his hard work as a guard hog and a truffle tracker; however he's not actually that tame that he should be inside a house let alone allowed to sleep on a bed. That of course doesn't stop him breaking in and shoving his snout in my face at dawn. The problem with creatures Tim Tim's size is that it's very hard to stop them doing what they want; and gets harder the larger they get. Same with people really. Despite how "cute" it looks, it would actually be very easy for Tim Tim to do me harm - possibly even kill me just by accident. Those tusks are no joke, and even a friendly nuzzle could end with him piercing my intestines. We're rectifying this behavior by having Tim Tim run outside all day so he sleeps properly at night in his own holding pen; but unfortunately today we were too busy with our workload and Tim Tim's pen was left with the door wide open. Something I will try to make sure doesn't happen in the future; as will Oldguard.
- Leo Briarworth

Not strictly nile&joe&oldguard related, but I have an oc with KikiLayne's type of hair and I was wondering what would be the best long term on the road in fantasy land hairstyle?
(she's an exiled princess, so I want her to look the part, but I also want her to have it be realistic/practical as well, I've always drawn her with braids to keep her hair off her face and then naturally curly/afro at the back - which is probably not sustainable on the road form what I've gleaned, but idek and I don't want to get it wrong)
Thankyou
The short answer is: braids (or another style with similar results like twists or threading) + any sort of head covering! This will be a bit long, so more details under the cut:
The long answer: coily/kinky hair, due to its shape, tangles and knots very very easily, and it shrinks a lot when left unstretched, which leads to more tangling. Braids, and any method that consists in making the hair stay contained while retaining its length, are the easiest way to avoid having to manipulate it too much, so they're amazing when you have to be active. They can also be left in for more than a couple of weeks (you can even wash the hair with the braids in!), making them very low maintenance!
Now, as to which style, I can't answer you, because braids are also SO versatile. There are infinite styles you can choose from, but a tip I can give you is: most modern braid styles are achieved by using synthetic hair to give length and volume, so unless you character has access to these resources (and it's possible in an historical context, people have been using hair extensions since forever!), you can search for braids with no feed-in!
I'm gonna throw in a few examples for you now:
Bantu knots. Not braids, just the hair twisted, but very easy to do (and really pretty in my opinion).
Tumblr media
Braids, let's bring a few. Starting with fulani! (sorry for using children's pics, they're easier to find the styles without too full extensions) They usually have a braid right in the middle, and one or two above the ears braided back to front, and you can style them in a lot of ways:
Tumblr media
Halo braids in infinite designs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I simply cannot illustrate cornrows, and simple braids enough, they ARE infinite. Another option with just as many possibilities is twists! Here you have a few examples:
Tumblr media
You still have the option of locs, which can be natural forming (stop detangling the hair and let the strands lock around each other as they go) or directed (by twisting or braiding the hair and not undoing them, letting the hair set). It's taken care of much like braids, and can be styled just like braids, depending on the kind:
Tumblr media
Over any of these you can throw turbans, head wraps/scarves, that help keep the hair free of dust or any sort of dirt, besides keeping it neat!
I recommend following black hair salons, or black hair care bloggers, to get a feeling on how to deal with this kind of hair on the daily! It's not more complicated than straight/wavy hair, but it is different, with different needs and care. I personally love TasalaHQ, educatednaturalqueen, naturalblackgirlie, dreadedvoyage and game_of_fros! @quiquimora also brought up this post which might be interesting for you!
Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if I should make this the finale post or not to be honest because I plan on playing some of the DLCs soon, so I'll make this a 'light' finale post because I'm sure I've said more than enough through my playthrough.
Morrowind genuinely surprised me. I heard all the oldguard TES fans saying it's way different and some claiming it was miles better.
Specifically I remember when Oblivion came out I heard from somewhere that Oblivion was just "dumbed down Morrowind" and kid me was like "What the heck are you talking about, Oblivion is the best game in the world (right now)???"
But man, they weren't wrong, but that's hardly what I'd point at in Morrowind in comparison.
Then again my memory of Oblivion is all rose tinted nostalgia and half memories.
What Morrowind is to me today is a fantastic fantasy game with some really interesting lore, a villain I love, a world that feels alien, troubled, imperfect and intriguing, and a gameplay cycle that felt really satisfying to me from the very start to roughly level 20 or so.
I REALLY like how pitiful and overwhelmed I felt at the start of this game- it felt fucking awesome to me and I know for some that's a weird statement and others it's the most obvious thing in the world but man is it true.
Level 1 in Morrowind as a newbie who doesn't know up from down is like waking up in the woods naked with the sound of hungry wolves all around you.
It's brutal, and exciting- every little victory- a potion, a new dagger, a new piece of armor- feels like the world to you.
I LOVED the early game in Morrowind, more than I ever liked it in Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Skyrim, or Fallout 4 (yeah I'm looping the bethesda engine NV in).
Because I constantly felt like I was punching up at a behemoth but I was getting away with it from time to time until I started to feel more on par with the behemoth, and eventually I overcame and hit end game and really became the behemoth and that was fun in its own right.
But I've been "mega end game god" in like 900 dang games at this point, it's always fun! And feeling like I earned it (like here) makes it feel better! But the journey often beats it and Morrowind's journey was so fun to me.
But yeah, beat the main quest. I did a lot in this game, and barely scratched the surface.
Beating it immediately made me think of how fun it would be to challenge myself to beat it- or another objective- right from the start without dumping hundreds of hours into leveling because that early game is a treat.
About the only things I didn't fully love were most of the quest designs showing their age.
Nothing super egregious, but there really was a lot of extremely simple "fetch thing" "Kill thing" "Walk to place" quests that didn't hold additional story value to make up for it.
Not to say simple is bad, but to say having a LOT of my playtime being killing various creatures for no real story reason beyond being asked to makes some actions feel pointless and like busy-work.
There were also quests that DID tie story in, which was really nice to see- things like inter-guild relations becoming a thing for some quests, or some quests having consequences further down the quest chain depending on how you completed it, and of course (as implied) some quests having multiple solutions with some of those solutions being interesting in how you find out about them.
I mean I think it's really neat how the fighter's guild has like 4 quest givers and if you blindly follow them you'll be doing all kinds of questionable stuff with questionable end goals, but if you talk to each of them you'll find that one of them is much more trustworthy and honorable than the rest, and it becomes a common loop to be sent on a quest for the FG and swing by him to ask if the quest sounds legit- AND MANY AREN'T! AND HE OFFERS ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS! THAT'S COOL AND LET'S YOU MAKE THE MISTAKE OF BEING TOO LOYAL AND FORGETTING YOUR MORALS BECAUSE YOU ARE "JUST PLAYING A GAME" BUT REWARDS YOU FOR QUESTIONING THAT LOYALTY AND SEEKING ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS! THAT'S AWESOME! Though the solution almost always being "just talk to the good guy before you do the quest" was slightly lacking, but such a cool idea.
But there wasn't a ton of this, but there also wasn't not a lot of this- it was an idea they clearly considered playing with and did when they could- I just wish there were both more and that it was used more on the menial tasks you're asked to do as well. I'm a sucker for multiple solutions is all, and consequences appearing later and altering how events play out or quests line up is always cool and I think it only happens a couple times in some guild quests if I'm not mistaken-
But again, I didn't do much in the grand scheme of things lol.
A TON of time invested and still, a metric fuckton to do including 100% of both expansions lol.
So- Morrowind. I really like this game :)
I think it's my favorite TES game, though I might change my mind whenever I revisit TES4, but I can at least say it's my favorite early game BY FAR and PROBABLY my favorite TES game.
I wonder if I can get buff enough to kill Dagoth Ur with like potion abuse. I haven't looked into it, all I know about him (and I knew before this gameplay also, I was just attacking out of curiosity) is that phase 2 rapidly regens health at like 2 billion a second or something, so you have to one shot him if at all possible.
Also I knew that he was supposed to be weaker depending on how many ash vampires you killed, but that that wasn't properly implemented (and I don't think the morrowind code patch bothers fixing it?).
Anywho- great game. I've been playing a lot of good games lately now that I think of it. I mean most of this blog is me playing good games, but I feel like, and I could be mistaken, but I feel like there was a stint there where I was playing "complicated" games and "games I don't enjoy but want to see the merit of so I'm being a sourpuss while I play".
Now I feel like the last 10 dang games were strictly good and or great. Can't say that's a bad thing :)
If you haven't ever played Morrowind before but you're familiar with say Skyrim, I'd honestly say give it a look. A look first- because it's a thick game to begin and you might be able to discern it's not for you based off a look- but a look none the less.
It's Skyrim with more RPG nonsense going on and a more brutal "rags to riches" hero story for your protag. Might be up your alley as much as it ended up being up mine :)
So up next is EITHER an entirely different game with some ocassional Morrowind posts as I touch on the expansions, or more direct Morrowind content as I emphasize the expansions until I finish them, but I'm leaning towards the former.
I think beating the main quest has earned Vaksten the Idiot a short break.
