SHAKES YOU how do you draw taurs. i need help i genuinley cant wrap my head around the anatomy of it. optionally i need help with fat taurs but any kind of taur is okay

Ooh, I love these sorta questions!!!

So there are two main things folks usually struggle with when it comes to drawing taurs as a whole. 1, they struggle with quadrupedal anatomy and 2. connecting the humanoid upper body to the quadrupedal lower body. Obviously there's no shame in either of these things, drawing four legged animals, especially if you're more used to the anatomical structure of something more humanoid is quite tough! And finding the sweet spot where humanoid and quadruped meet to make a taur is a bit of a struggle for folks who're still figuring it out.

So! The first thing you wanna do really is just familiarize yourself with quadrupedal anatomy. Look at the skeleton of the creature you're trying to taur and see how things like their limbs bend differently or how they're just differently naturally posed as compared to someone who walks upright.

This is a very simplified skeleton of a cat, but you can pretty immediately see how differently everything bends. And I'm not saying it's something you have to perfectly master to know how to draw a taur (especially when you get to drawing fat taurs), but i highly recommend becoming familiar with how a quadrupedal body is structured, the silhouette of most animals is quite misleading! And absolutely use reference!

Heck, our first go at drawing taur Riley was super heavily referenced (I'll even share the ref image if anyone is interested!), and this still came out real jank. Practice makes perfect!

As for connecting the upper body to the lower body, this is a little more subjective and up to you, but I'll lay out some general guidelines.

Generally speaking, you wanna put the humanoid torso where the base of the neck is, the front of the torso kinda merging with the rest of the taur body just after the tummy, basically just before the crotch starts.

As for the back, you're gonna want to shoot for just shy of where the butt starts, waist having curved back outwards. It gets a little awkward if you go higher or lower than that. And obviously, you wanna make sure the torso is firmly planted in the center of where the neck should be, ehehe.

That's pretty much the basics though! As always, i recommend looking at how your favorite taur artists draw the creatures and studying off of that! Familiarize yourself with quadrupedal anatomy, and use reference!! You will absolutely get it down with time. I will absolutely cover fat taurs if there's interest in it, and ofc, lemme know if there's anything I missed or need to go over! I hope this helps!

wahh thank you TTT !!! I did sorta give a very simplistic answer here but it was more of my simpler sketchy style so lemme redo that, ill try to be consise and make this understandable ?? its a bit hard cuz it honest to god depends on what Kind of piece im even drawing, cuz for some i go the whole length of doing lineart flats and all that, others i just just fuck around untill it looks right?

i do usually start with a rough sketch or colour draft, especially with more compley pieces this helps with figuring out the feel, honestly i should spend more time drafting properly, figuring out poses and such but im so lazy i just go w the first thing that looks good

then just lines over the colour draft, fixing lots of anatomy and proportion stuff, and depending on how i wanna do the colours ill either keep the colour layers or merge them together and have the edited colours as the base colour (this might not even make sense help)

see this piece at the time gave me an insane ammount of trouble with lighting and colours, so after trying to render i ended up merging everything together....which i dont USUALLY do but the rendering is pretty similar except usually i have colours be seperated by layer,

ANYWAYS sadly i dont have a process on how it got from flats to this specific render for this piece...but i still followed my initial drafts/plans with vibe and colours and just painted over it, its why i make it after all!

but honestly a lot of times its just very simple colours and just trying to mainting good contrast and values !!!! and THEN fucking around with colours and rextures, for other pieces i kinda just paint as i go? i have this timelapse of my justice piece that may be a bit more help!

it includes the initial colour draft, the cleanup/lining process, flats, rendering, and all that so its probs the most accurate timelapse of my morecomplex work processes, with stuff that doesnt include heavier backgrounds, which is a whole OTHER topic honestly

im sorry if i cant explain it more cohesively, i genuinely barely know what im doing most times and go by muscle memory and stuff i Know but cant. Explain? like i know how light and folds work since i observed and studied them but i cannot put it into words at all )--)0

I feel weird giving out unprompted permission statements because I'm making a big assumption that anyone's going to want to use my work. That said I also know people do like to build on other people's art and can't always work up the nerve to ask, so: Anyone is free to use this design if they want to for any reason- I don't own this character anyway. (Although I am hopeful that you do not, you know, monetize it, because i cant do that and if you do that its not fair ;_; ) Feel free to remix, improve, use as basic inspiration, etc. I would appreciate a tag/mention if you use it so I can see what you did!

This design has evolved a little since I first started drawing it, and I will see people reblogging the original design notes and think 'oh no! those are out of date and I don't have new/accurate ones!'

Reblogging the old one is still an honor- and the first take on a design just sometimes has a different appeal because it's less refined and more chaotic (especially with a character that should be chaotic), so I suspect some people will just prefer the older drawings & they'll still get shared, which is great! But I felt as if the project was a little bit incomplete without an update, since I think I've reached the point where if you see that old post & then come to my blog and look at my current content, there's a noticeable difference.

Also I kind of like making design notes.

If anyone's wondering why things changed, the answer's really simple- 90% of it is just the result of him settling into having more consistent anatomy and facial structure so that I can keep him looking accurate across different angles and poses. If you look at the old drawings you may notice that Gollum has an inconsistently shaped squishy head. That's fine for a concept post but doesn't work as well for maintaining him across different comic panels or in an animatic, at least not the way I work.

In the same vein, while my art is still & will always be heavily stylized, I started giving him more structured semi-sorta-realistic anatomy so that he wouldn't look entirely out of place next to less bizarre-looking characters such as Aragorn. (I feel that's also helpful in nudging Gollum into the uncanny valley where he ought to be, rather than leaving him so abstractified that there's a risk you won't see anything wrong with him having noodle arms.) He also acquired the new-style 'garbage bag' outfit because I found a reference in LOTR to his arms and legs being bare/exposed (it's in one of my favorite passages, the 'an eagle would think Gollum was dead if it came by right now' passage in The Two Towers):

Not even an eagle poised against the sun would have marked the hobbits sitting there, under the weight of doom, silent, not moving, shrouded in their thin grey cloaks. For a moment he might have paused to consider Gollum, a tiny figure sprawling on the ground: there perhaps lay the famished skeleton of some child of Men, its ragged garment still clinging to it, its long arms and legs almost bone-white and bone-thin: no flesh worth a peck.

when it comes to drawing in general, one of the things that helped me the most can be summarized in this tweet 

drawing rhythm doctor fanart for a year unironically helped me with posing, anatomy, coloring and improve with my artstyle which is funny since it's essentially the brainrot keeping me going

the best way i could explain this as advice is to find subjects or topics youre passionate about. it could be making fanart for your favorite media (me </3), making ocs, drawing environments, and just anything youre happy with. while it's important to get out of your comfort zone to learn, it's important to be comfortable with art first 

also!! please!! dont make art *just* for the sake of posting dont be like me during my artstreet days im begging you 😭😭😭. of course this doesnt apply to every artist, since im sure there are people who do need to post consistently. but if you draw solely because you enjoy it, please remember to keep it that way and prioritize yourself! lots of rd art i made are self indulgent that i just so happened to post, which is honestly why i made so much art now that i think about it 💀

one v fun and interesting thing abt pathologic i think is that it has So Many Themes, and a significant amount of the fanbase still do tend to identify it as having one primary theme above others, and its very interesting to see how people respond to the games.

like, a lot of people primarily view pathologic through a philosophical lense. the literal, textual story of the game is not as relevant to them as the moral and philosophical questions the game poses. other people focus primarily on that textual story, and often avoid the metatextual narrative to fully indulge in the world of the story and the characters. some take from pathologic primarily a story about political and social tension during a crisis. some focus more on the themes of life and death, of the idea of the greater good, of utopia. some see the game mostly as an experiment in cruelty - indeed the comparison to the "theater of cruelty" is almost unavoidable. etc

its rly interesting to see what people focus on! ofc most people engage w various themes in the game but ultimately there seem to be a variety of experiences of it that draw people in for very different reasons. like, when i think of pathologic i think about 'oh yes one of my favorite games, colonisation and cultural genocide simulator', and what most draws me into the text is a strong identification with artemys experience and a primary concern for artemy and the kins story and presence; and everything i think about the town, the characters, the story, and ultimately all of the game goes through that lens - im always thinking about indigeneity when making sense of pathologic.

on the other hand, ive seen like, a bunch of reviews or takes on the game where people talk about the theme of colonialism and indigeneity, but mostly as a secondary theme to what to them is the main story or point of the game, and that always blows my mind, bc i cant imagine coming out from this game and not being profoundly and personally shaken by these themes and artemys story. probably other peoples focus on the game i similarly dont understand or really consider bc i didnt resonate w it as much. just v cool to me that this is one of those pieces of media that rly invoke the idea of a story being a dialogue between the author(s) and the reader

OKAY OKAY OMG WHERE DO I START

so first of all the people working w her are SO nice like her manager and i were wearing the same sweatshirt so we had a nice little laugh about that and he was actually so nice talking to everyone in line waiting for the m&g

but ANYWAYS so i did end up doing a drawing of her (!) and it was big so i brought it in a cardboard box and the guy who was sending people into the m&g wanted to see and he was like that's fucking RAD and he was so sweet he was like "maggie's so nice, don't be nervous she's going to love it" and he was RIGHT bc she was SO NICE

i got into the meet and greet and she was so polite and nice and asked what was in the box so i pulled out the drawing for her and her jaw DROPPED and she was like "this is so fucking sick your style is insane!!!" and handed it to her manager to take care of it (and he was like ur drawing is sick) and she gave me a hug - i also told her how grateful i am that she makes the music that she does, especially now that she can make what she wants and not like the bubblegum pop her former label was trying to force her to do, and how i always cry to loner, different, and we never even dated in my car and she was like "omg im sorry!!!!" and i was like "no dont be they're good tears bc i feel seen!!!!" and we took our professional photo together and she threw up a peace sign so ofc i did too and i asked her to take a selfie so i gave her my phone and she took a few selfies w me (i dont look that good in them bc i fr do not know how to pose for selfies but that's not the point and she looked stunning so who cares) and then i headed out

like she was SO nice and i wasnt rushed but i was so nervous i did the same thing as when i met mads and forgot to tell her my name lol - i was going to ask her if i could take a pic of her holding the drawing i did of her but i got nervous and forgot to so i didnt but there's always next time :) 10/10 would meet and greet again 🥰🥰🥰

also the concert itself was so good?!?!?!? i mean no shock i knew that when she opened for mads but STILL!!!!! i cant wait until the professional photos come out so i can get it printed and situate it next to my m&g photos w mads and sabrina like the holy trinity is complete 😌

hmmmmm not sure tbh i cant rly think of anything / i think of too many things that it cant rly be catergorized into anything coherent. a lot of my style was rly influenced by artists that i grew up on but i think ive gone thru a lot over the years and some of that influence has rly faded :( i used to be into rly cartoony artists like kasey golden a long time ago and i kinda miss how like, unique and not-same-face-syndrome-y i used to draw characters. i do tend to have a lot of design flairs that im still rly attached to and youll see them around from time to time LOL

7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate

uhhh oil painting? or like, painting in general i guess, im really terrible at it but i love it sm its so cool. its the opposite for charcoal tho its pretty fun to mess around with it but i have no appreciation for works with it :/// i dont rly like it especially if its like, just realistic stuff i think its boring if its just like. a straight up portrait with nothing else creative abt it 😭

9. What are your file name conventions

i usually just have it named w the charac im drawing in it and then with a number if theres more than one file w the charac so like scar.mdp, scar + timbertie.mdp, ace.mdp, YAMA3.mdp, str6.mdp, 2sgr3.mdp, or sometimes like, doodles.mdp doodles1.mdp doodles3.mdp doodles4.mdp doodles6.mdp usually when theres more than one character in the file. i used to put just number 1, 2, 3 etc as the file names so that theyd show alphabetically but it was rly better to have at least a name of what was in the drawing

11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what

i listen to music At All Times. first thing i do when i open my laptop i immediately open youtube to play music. i dont really have like a specific playlist for when im drawing something specific but sometimes i do get like. really into and obsessed w a song and just play that on loop. ive been rly obsessed recently w zild and the amazing devil

14. Any favorite motifs

i looooove love love love love yellow and the sun and sunflowers not quite as a specific motif but like. to show/ joy. happiness. hope. i eat that shit up 💛🫶

Either hands or legs. I know I’m getting better at hands but still they annoy me so much. And then legs are so confusing to me. Pants are a nightmare cause I have no idea what to do.

8. what's the most fun and the least fun parts about your process

I want to say deciding the posing is my favorite part. Trying to see what works and doesn’t work is so fun. As for least favorite part I think is sketching. Which may sound weird but it’s always 50/50 for me. If i don’t like the sketch I find it hard to continue. I’ve had drawings where i liked the lineart more than the sketch. But there’s just a lot of pressure I put on myself cause if i don’t like it it’s most likely not gonna get done.

8. what do you like most about your own work?

it feels so weird to praise yourself… uhmm i like how simple it is yaknow? i tend to be drawn to more simplistic artstyles that are still able to evoke alot of emotion or body language, that say alot without actually saying much, i just find it impressive and i think (i hope) i’m able to do that as well sometimes. I also like my posing, i really try to make my poses somewhat interesting to look at even if it’s just a standing normal guy pose yaknow? and i feel like i do that pretty well too

23. Do you listen to music or watch shows while you work? If so, what’s your favourite?

I love listening to shows/movies or youtube when i draw, i’ll put on the batman more than any other movie, i really don’t know why it’s just my go to when i cant figure out something else to listen to. or i’ll put on gltas, btas, or stas, any of those. for youtube, i always go to markiplier’s fnaf series or just jerma comps LMAO. if im not watching something then it’s music, and my music is full of SOOOO many different genres, like a very very wide range of music styles so it’s hard to pick a majority but i’d guess that MOST of it is old rock n roll, like 70’s-early 90’s old shit

Okay so I do have a certain habit of creating mutiple sketches and never finishing them so I decided to post them and add some context as well because why not?

1. This drawing is just a ship art from the cartoon pilot of 3 Dog Band which was a pilot that submited along with some other pilots on a contest to see which one would make it to a show and Regular Show won. I did watch Regular Show but I was unaware there was a competition with also other pilots and that 3 Dog Band even existed, I rrally like the concept and my favorite is the german blonde dog seen in my ship art with a random fox lady that was present dancing in the pilot. This is another ship art this time from french comics named "Les Nombrils"(The Bellybuttons in english)which is about 3 friends and their dramas Jenny,Vicky and Karine. Its really good to read and I have read it online and love it, and this girl in blue Vicky is in love with the goth girl that her parents forbid her to be with because they are homophobic. Not much to explain, I created a SU gem called "moonstone"the basic backstory about gems that live on the moon completly unaware of human life, they also seem to be directly created by moon dust and rocks. However, they are not happy about the regime in the gem empire and decided to stay hidden on the moon.

A sketch about 2 of my OCs that I lost inspiration to continue, they were dacing,they ar a sheep who is a singer named Hilda and a mean wolf called Arthur who is a mafia boss and rules over the city(this takes places in the 50-60s). Hilda is requested to sing at a night bar in visit of Arthur who is considered someone really important and dangerous, so Hilda is forced to sing and Arthur begans to have interest in her and later fall in love with her.

(Not gonna give up spoilers about the full story but there is a plot twist in it)

I like Euphoria and Metal family and once I saw the actor of Cassie doing a photoshoot to Paper Magazine I could only think of Lydia so I decided to draw Lydia as her. They look realy alike.

This might sound immature but when I was little I used to watch a lot o LPS and even own some (I used to own 50 to 60 LPS but ater gave them away as I grew up), and recently rewatched the whole LPS Popular series and still liked it.I was suppose to make Savannah and Brooklyn as human in their prom outfits(I also ran out of inspiration on this one after finding out theres a massive cliffhanger and the series were left unfinished 3 years ago and to this day theres not much information about it continuing ever again so.)

I miss reading and commenting shit on fics, tbh i havent been nerding it out and im kinda gloomy about it. so, right now i'll just ramble about whatever.

So about the recent finn doodle i made, I felt like pent up LOL that i had to whip out all the fucking power I have to create that man. BOY IM INSANE ABOUT HIM,, ahhh my favorite guy.. I cant wait to draw a full body of him.. all painted up,, in a sexy pose maybe.. but also the car LOL. I havent been drawing og finn, nor even having the FEEL to draw cars in gen ( or vehicles for that matter) because I've feel rusty and repetitive in some kind. aka i was finding my own poses boring. I only had a very clear SEXy idea of what Finn's face would look like but the others are very vague.. like for leland, IDK how his face still should be and how it has to complement like idk his carself. Also i keep imagining what him and finn would look like with each other but ughh finn is so handsome and leland is so too but he's all blurred up in my imagination which is fucking me UP anyway. About sidd, i had a fleeting idea that him and leland are Somehow Related or just close because they have the same VA lol. atr nouveau REALLY likes things like curvy lines and floral patterns, with a lot of inspiration from celtic and japanese designs. everything about it is supposed to feel decadent, like all the paintings have been (metaphorically) dipped in gold. its SOOO pretty and UGH i cant get enough of it. Theres a LOT of ones that i adore but ill show you my two favorites

this one was made by Alphonse Mucha, and GOD look at those lines!! the majestic flip of the hair!! the meandering lines of the smoke!!! there's so much movement and the lady looks so graceful and regal!! everything about this speaks of eloquence and luxury <333

and THIS one is absolute FIRE my man!! it was made by Hans Christiansen and it is a BANGER. Literally HOW cool do you have to be to draw a lady surrounded by fire with a GIANT SNAKE obeying her?? I wouldnt say this one perfectly encapsulates art nouveau in its entirety (specifically in the way of colors) like the previous one does, but it most CERTAINLY leaves a lasting impression. And, once again, look at those organic lines!! the movement of every single element in this picture!! the fire, the snake, the dynamic pose of the lady!!! GOD this art slaps so much holy shit.

ALSO! here's a link to someone who makes art nouveau stuff! I would have included one in here as my favorite but i didn't think it really counted because it is a modern artwork + theyre still alive and stuff BUT its just so good i had to at least mention it. its SOOOOO pretty oh my GOD.

things i learned from rare pair week

back when i hosted ramyatta week, drawing so much and so consistently for a few weeks helped me improve a lot. i feel like ive probably gotten the same thing from rare pair week. specifically...

-lineart is my fav part of the process, i like indicating heavy shadows with solid blocks of black or very dark brown.

-my fave types of brushes to ink with are fineliner mimics with a bit of dithering. while brushes with more pressure are nice, i think i honestly prefer just painting and carving into my lines. its why doing lineart properly takes me hours and hours but i really like the results...

-coloring is my least favorite part. but i hate how solid flat colors look. therefore... we have a problem.

-I NEED TO USE REFERENCES MORE like im just not good enough to build a pose from form construction alone! i wont be for ages so why am i trying this hard??

-i do not fucking like drawing people. like i just dont. idk what but the only pieces i had motivation on were the ones with an omnic involved. maybe thats why i quit a decade ago. but i cant force myself to draw humans if i dont like it, no matter how much i wanna draw zarya being sexy or mauga being beefy (still lesbian hes just super fun to draw in small bursts bc he is so Shaped)

i was not destined to be a beefy woman artist...

while i was working on my day 4 i actually was also rewatching tengen toppa gurren lagann with a friend and honesty... i might try to just steal whats going on in those eyecatches. the big, blocky shadows, the feathering at the shadow edges, and the pale and just slightly desaturated colors...

yeah... ive been thinking about these a lot. my brain was already primed to go in this direction since i started reading idw1 transformers. a lot of mtmte/ll is rendered this way regarding shadows and how they indicate form. actually, i think a lot of transformers art is.
