thinking about the time I brought my buddy from up north down to the DC area for work + explaining to our boss that gender identity doesn't work the same where we're from and her just being gobsmacked. and I was shocked in return bc you'd think the ppl who dunk on flyover states for being trump country, podunk, dead industry towns would realize that their twitter discourse is like. Not a Thing in these places.

she was really curious (which I appreciate!) about it. the idea that nonbinary or even "gender identity" as a concept isn't a thing up here was so baffling to her. and it explained, to me, why she seemed perplexed by my friend not being sure how to respond when asked for pronouns.

I live in a small community. the whole county has less people than my neighborhood when I lived in colorado springs, which isn't a huge city. the idea that you have an internal sense of man or woman just isn't a thing here. you're identified based on sex and your adherence to traditional gender roles.

city people find it odd when I describe myself as a crossdresser, and I don't love the term transvestite but it's applied to me accurately. I wear men's clothes. people let me hold doors open and walk women to their cars, jobs let me do heavy lifting. this is not the result of some internal identity being affirmed, but the result of my personality, hobbies, and how I present myself being outside the norm for women here. I am still a woman, but I'm not comfortable in makeup, dresses, and I'm not comfortable letting men pay for drinks or hold the door for me unless we're close friends. this isn't progressive, but the result of some weird tacit understanding that develops when you've been in a small community for a long time. they're not really happy about it- there's businesses who don't serve me bc of how I am, I recently won a game of darts (technically) bc everyone forfeited after I mentioned being a homosexual, it can be hard to get a job, and I tend to stay home when I'm here since it's not the safest to go out, both as a woman and as a gender non-conforming person.

still, there is no dependence on internal identity. I'm both recognized as a woman in my community, but given the responsibilities and (sometimes) freedoms allotted to a man. this puts me in limbo. I say I am a woman, but have no feeling of abstract womanhood, and it wouldn't matter anyway bc people's treatment of me and my role in society isn't determined by who or what I say I am, just by what I do.

and so it becomes hard to explain what a gender identity even is to someone who has only known this environment, like my buddy. I am not originally from here, spend much of my time on the road, so I have outside context. he does not. you can't identify into the roles we are allotted- they are communally given. so if someone were to roll up here, say they're nonbinary, it wouldn't materially impact anything because our roles are based off sex and external behavior. there's not cis or trans, but just man, woman, or crossdressing man or crossdressing woman.

so when my boss was confused by this, I was confused. we get told city people are worldly, educated, and know how our communities function and shit on them based off that knowledge. but she didn't know anything. she thought that there are people here who "identify as" smth and are oppressed based off that internal identity when that internal identity isn't smth in the zeitgeist here. she said "but trans people are oppressed in rural, conservative communities." but how can that be a coherent group of people, when most people where I live don't know what a pronoun is, equate "feeling like a woman" to being made to keep house, or "feeling like a man" to shoveling snow or hauling lumber. there's no way to feel that- you can only do those things.

her cultural relativism she spoke often about went out the window. "But so you would be nonbinary?" no, because there isn't a "nonbinary" here. "But that's transphobic" against who? how do we define who is trans in a culture in which gender identity doesn't even exist? and how is lacking that definition of internal identity transphobic? it's not necessary to how we function! it is a small, rural, northern community. what is relevant to us is that the lumber is cut for heat, that restaurants and hotels have staff to take in tourists, that the bills are paid and that the snow is plowed. what place would that identity have in this? it's not relevant. your self-perception here forms in relation to the community - you are assigned a role based on sex, and you can defy that role, but then you must take on other duties. and the defiance of that role is frowned upon, because you are seen as stepping on the toes of those whose duties you take on- men here do not like when I insist on lifting heavy objects myself, because it's their job to do so for ladies. it's an ego thing. it's ass being pinned to a role, and defying that role gets you this "well, fuck you, you can lift that your damn self, woman" shit. I hope anyone reading this understands nuance and that I don't defend the way my community works- it'd be amazing to not hear from neighbors that my family "needs a man of the house," or that I'm "never gonna get a husband acting that way" (not that I'd like one anyway, but people value that here). to be given the role of crossdresser/aberrant woman isn't fun, and I'll describe it to city ppl and they're like cool! progressive! no. it's a testing, constantly, to see if I am fit to wear workboots or play darts with the men or fix my own car.

just some thoughts about that exchange - the spiritualist concept of gender identity doesn't exist in a place where material reality is upfront, where it's hand-to-mouth living, and the community is small and personal. I felt odd, both explaining the liberal concept of gender to my buddy, and explaining the lack of focus on internal identity to my boss.

i was going to type a long essay about this but in all truth i think it's like three main reasons.

the first one being a lot of the audience in the west is young gay kids and as it became more popular - the bnha fandom was a lot of shounen dudebros first introduction to fandom culture. bnha is not unique in terms of fandom in any way aside from being popular but a lot of that side of shounen associates it as a the "weird fandom." when rlly its just homos galore. like men who don't know sns has existed since 2006 lol

the other part is that both bkg and deku are extremely polarizing characters ajsdkjsd. deku is completely lacking in shounen mc masculinity. he's a crybaby and a pussy at the start unlike most mcs. he's not particularly skilled or athletic like quite literally a loserboy to the core of his core. he lacks any masculinity so dudebro twt doesn't usually fw him

and then there is bkg who is liked by dudebros usually but hated in the fandom space bc his introduction is a psycho bully and people seem to dickride him endlessly. obviously as a bkg fan i understand getting extremely defensive over him bc well. yk. but for most people they're not particularly interested in his nuance after first impressions. there's also a lot of people who find him to represent a personal bully in their life and hate him for that.

( smth similar happens w enjis arc and how people feel about him. normally that opinion is 100% going to influenced by your relationship to abuse and trauma. im much much more understanding w enji tho bc he is a grown man / abusive parent like most hateful opinions of him r validated to me )

the last reason is the art style is very silly and adorable. like a lot of people just dont fw it. i think s6 sort of changes this but the first like 3 season b cute as hell and ppl dont enjoy it like that. this happens to one piece a lot too i think but this is the least troubling reason to me. it contributes but it is what it is fr

I have never seen so much mishandling as i seen with those three characters 😭😭(like bro i get that the most noticeable arc that ppl retain is the white bone spirit arc bc of OSP BUT THEY DIDNT STUCK TO THAT CHARACTERISTICS IN THE LATER ARCS LIKE CMON NOW—bajie couldn’t even lie about the dragon piss medicine in a later arc, what makes yall think he’s always a fantastic liar. Even if its followed by hella traumatizing moments that no human person would remain sane like that. <hes just barely holding on by his faith, his mission and his disciples. Hmmm I know about the Sun Wukong & Tang Sanzang dunking but is that happening with Zhu Bajie too? Have to say I find that a little surprising given that (if memory serves correctly) Monkie Kid did say Zhu Bajie's main fault (well besides the whole being a man-eating yaoguai thing) was being stubborn, but then lego Patriarch Subodhi said he became one of the hardest workers of the pilgrimage. I guess I was under the impression that people were more light on their criticisms and thoughts about Zhu Bajie, but maybe that's just because he doesn't seem to be a point of great interest in the lego show fandom lol.

Kind of funny story anon but I've been vicariously growing in awareness on how much Zhu Bajie is loved in China through @antidotefortheawkward's posts about the pigman. And yeah, I can see that being in large part because Xiyouji in its totality does give a very different impression of who these characters are and where they end up than a cartoony summary can provide. As a number of people on this site have noted for example, the White Bone Demon Arc can be understood in a much more complex light than "Tang Sanzang & Zhu Bajie hurt poor monkey for nothing" when placed in the context of it being more near the beginning of the journey when the pilgrims were still grating against each other a lot & it happening very soon after the whole debacle with the Ginseng fruit tree. Here after all you can see how the monk has a recent history of getting into serious trouble from the monkey lying and being quick to destruction, so he would be primed to not believe SWK, not to mention he does hesitate to use the headband against SWK more than many give him credit for here. And YEAH given all the things they go through together I am more willing to accept a Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie enemies to friends arc than that put on many another character.

Also LMAOOOOO Tang Sanzang DOES seem to have quite a few lines where he tries to comfort terrified individuals by telling them that the pilgrims are good people even with their rancid looks (ugly pilgrim rights <3). And oh dang anon you are so right about how even if Tang Sanzang is much more of a static character in comparison to SWK it's kind of a shame more attention isn't given to the series of horrifying events he goes through and what effect that would have on him so that he gets a little more depth than "weepy monk who's mean to the Monkey King & falls off his dragon horse" in the popular western imagination. But then again I can understand why the monk's trauma is largely downplayed in western cartoony retellings, given that said lighthearted cartoony retellings probably wouldn't be the best medium to even touch on stuff like human butchery, death threats, sexual assault, and the consequences thereof.

I wasn't going to respond to this but I'm doing some work stuff and it's on my mind.

I think there are two things when it comes to abuse and abuse apologism in the fandom.

SJM addresses it very poorly narratively and the readers pick up what she's saying. Sometimes I think she likes to sprinkle in a little sexual assault/domestic violence just to make things spicy but she doesn't want to follow through with it. So Rhys/Lucien are suffering...but only when it's narratively convenient and then they're not. Everyone KNOWS they're suffering...until it doesn't serve her anymore. And that's a problem because why should the fans care if, say, Feyre thinks that Lucien did nothing to help her or what he did wasn't enough? She thinks it, the author wrote that and even if we're not meant to agree (and I think we were), it gets said and people genuinely DO feel that way. Which takes me to my second point

this fandom fucking has 0 ability to address nuanced topics. Look at how Gwyn has been spoken about, how sexual assault gets weaponized for ships, and how people truly buy into "perfect victim" narratives, or the media shiny belief that you're somehow "broken" or "damaged" or otherwise incapable of moving forward once this happens. For Lucien specifically, he often gets painted with the "your parents are abusers so naturally you are too" brush and SJM uses it LIBERALLY all over the place.

Tomas Mandray is said to be a bad option for Nesta because his dad hits his mother (though we later find out this is true, he's a bad person not BECAUSE he has abusive parents). Eris (and his brothers) are merely extensions of Beron's worst impulses. The fandom loves to dunk on Lucien as being just like Beron and I've seen many, MANY bad takes where someone is calling Lucien out for being like Beron/drawing comparisons between Elain and the LOA. And part of that isn't even unreasonable because those are the authors opinions, too (though Lucien is Helion's son, which distances him from Beron and I know people like to pretend that's not canon)

Additionally, I do think a lot of people just don't think men can suffer from abuse and if they do, it's not as bad. So Lucien and Feyre are both suffering but hers is worse and Lucien is complicit for not killing Tamlin. Again, there is no nuance and if you attempt to inject it, people get angry because they take these books too personally. But these are real-life attitudes merely magnified in fiction which is why I'm always harping that analysis for these books too heavily focus on individual readers and not the authors on attitudes or the attitudes of the society we live in. SJM is merely reflecting the world we live in. Lucien just didn't try hard enough. He sided with Tamlin, he helped Hybern, blah blah blah.

Lucien lacks power across the board. He's the only person who helps Feyre in tangible ways when she's human and beneath the mountain- from screaming BEHIND YOU with the worm, to refusing to give up her name knowing he's going to die, and fixing her face and giving her a blanket in her cell, Lucien puts his body in front of Feryes over and over and over again. He does it because she is part of his court but in ACOWAR Lucien also says he's her friend. He's the only person, between the push-pull of Rhys and Tamlin, who is doing things because he is concerned about HER and not because he wants to fuck her.

And I know the criticism in ACOMAF is he tried to drag her back to Tamlin and ignored her letter, but Lucien didn't fucking know Rhys wasn't a piece of shit. In her mind, Feyre condemns him for thinking Rhys is, but the last interaction Lucien and Rhys have is Rhys in his mind about to kill him, and the time before that is him taunting Lucien about his dead love and his mother getting assaulted by his father. The author likes to ignore the things she wrote, but in order to prop Rhys up in ACOMAF, she just...ignores huge sections on ACOTAR.

And I think, finally, Feyre is the one who invites Lucien to Velaris. He keeps her secret all through ACOWAR when he knows she's lying. He teams up with her against his best friend on more than one occasion and out of everyone serving beneath a High Lord, Lucien is consistently the only person who defies orders in order to give Feyre help/information (Cassian and Azriel and Amren all hide that pregnancy, but Lucien defies Tamlin with the bogge and again when they just leave Spring behind after Ianthes hands get wrecked).

Anyway, I didn't mean to offer such a passioned defense of Lucien but if you stan Feyre and not Lucien RIP i guess. She considers him her friend, she brought him to Velaris with her, and Lucien still goes to Spring even though Tamlin uses him like a punching bag in order to ensure HER safety. He's the person who goes back when they find out she's pregnant to keep Tamlin from doing something foolish. He's keeping the human lands together for HER and HER court.

What made you ship it? uh.... somehow I don't actually remember what exactly made me ship it? like I was very aware that Q was into Picard tho and I think it was gradually growing on me as I watched thru TNG the first time. Q & Picard's last scene in "All Good Things" definitely kinda made it click I think, with Picard thanking Q for his help and Q admitting that he did indeed choose to help him, and then when Q leans in to whisper something in Picard's ear but then backs away with that little fond grin...like that interaction really did make me go yea. yea this is something i like a lot

What are your favorite things about the ship? They're older men, for one, which is kind of a breath of fresh air bc most prominent mlm ships you see floating around are younger dudes and it's just nice to see older ppl finding each other. i need to know love is out there for ppl who are not young. kind of a cheesy reason to love them haha. and they are both very physically attractive to me Awooga so that's a bonus hehe. and again like I said for Wolfwood & Milly it's the balancing each other out aspect. Q, a chaotic being who is trying (and failing) to keep to the orders in the Continuum, and Picard, a very orderly man who is actually quite chaotic. They are both kind of seemingly-aloof at first but they really do care a lot about others in their own ways. Q is always challenging Picard and in the midst of them Picard manages to challenge Q in return. they've just got such a great dynamic interacting with each other, building off each other. and man they are both very very lonely people and the lonely people finally finding connection in each other thing means everything to me aagh.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? i think this ship would be infinitely more popular if both Q & Picard were younger, conventionally attractive-looking men (ala the 2009 trek reboot movie lmao). like i've literally seen posts in the pas where ppl are dunking on their appearances for being bald/having receding hairlines like NO THAT IS NOT UGLY FUCK OFF!! (it especially upsetting to me to see sentiments like that as a guy who has receding hairline and probably going to go bald sooner rather than later haha). but like too bad for them i guess they are missing out by not being able to look past looks/signs of aging and aging is not a bad thing at all geez louise.

there was a post that popped up on my dash not too long ago that said something along the lines of "if you're only reading YA and fanfiction, you're not reading, you're consuming tropes" and i wanted to comment on it but i didnt want to reblog it because 1.) i didnt want to clog ops activity any more than it already was 2.) i dont....fully disagree, and 3.) if this point im making does end up being totally inane and the majority of ppl disagree i dont want to become the victim of a snarky comment from op that leads to me being dunked on for several reblogs

Like i said, I don't fully disagree with that point, not at all. theres a reason why filters and tags exist on fanfiction sites, and its so ppl can literally look for specific tropes. There are the occasions where you find a fic thats such a unique and well written concept you forget its not an original novel- but that's rare.

my only hold up is....thats okay? not everyone likes/enjoys reading, and fic is a good way to mentally engage in it without committing to a book.

The reason why i got hung up on this is because of a specific story from my aunt, who has been an middle-high school english teacher for over 20 years now, and from what i can tell, is a damn good one

My aunt works in a low-income area with lots of farming town kids, so its pretty conservative and VERY underfunded

and she has a rule for her classroom: you MUST bring something to read for silent reading (i think once a week but im not sure)

And she tells her students "i dont care what you bring, just bring something"

A lot of students bring whatever books, magazines, anything. She has had snarky kids bring in books obviously meant for little kids; and she doesn't say a word.

It doesn't always lead to something, but she's had several students who REALLY struggled with reading grow to love it because....they can read whatever they want and not get shamed by her. She had a high school senior bring in dogman comics and she was like hell yeah! I've heard those rock! She's had students who never read for fun tearing through series because it's easy and they aren't embarrassed to be reading them anymore.

My little sister went to a really snooty, up-its-own-ass charter school for years and its festered a literal hatred of reading in her. She wasnt allowed to bring anything "pop culture", no harry potter or hunger games, DEFINITELY not comics or graphic novels, nothing besides "classics" (my brother can testify, it was the fucking worst)

So yeah, I agree that people only reading trashy-romance ya or fanfic aren't really "reading books". Totally. And I agree that anti-intellectualism (which was forged on this website in response to people shaming anyone they deemed "not smart" which honestly was mostly just internalized misogyny“im not like other girls” behavior) Is an actual real problem, but I don't think people reading mostly fic is this horrible thing that's gonna lead to the end of intelligence online

Anyways, yeah. Read what you want. If you have the motivation, check out a book you've never read. Or read articles when they pop up on your timeline, that's what I like to do.

But don't let anyone shame you for reading, I think. Whatever you've got motivation to do, I'm sure it's still keeping your brain stimulated and helping your vocabulary.

I just heard someone say Wuko is only shipped by straight ppl. And then they went on to say korrasami is only shipped by the gays as if the majority of Wuko shippers don’t actively enjoy korrasami too. Like first of all I’ve seen a lot of queer ppl (including myself) ship wuko. Secondly they act like wuko shippers won’t touch korrasami with a ten foot pole. When it’s the complete opposite. There are so many fics/ fan art that have both pairings in it. It’s like if you dislike the ship just say so and move on instead of covering a chunk of the fandom in a cishet blanket. Ok. So at first I was going to answer this quick and simple, but then my brain started thinking about the history and context and it made me wonder if it goes deeper than people not liking the ship and wanting to dunk on it for being "for the straights". Is there more to it than that?

I agree with you. Wuko is not just a ship for straight people. And Korrasami is not just for queer people. And many people ship Wuko as a companion to Korrasami or vice versa, so it's really not accurate to say one is for straight people while the other is for gay people. There's a lot of crossover, regardless of one's gender and sexuality. And it’s kind of exhausting to be told something is “for straight people” and then feel like you have to ‘prove’ you are ‘queer enough’.

All that being said; I wonder if the person/people making this claim has to do with the history of straight women fetishizing gay men, in real life (like the cliche trope of the “gay best friend”), and in anime/manga fandoms (are "yaoi fangirls" still a big thing?).

It's a complicated topic that I don't have a full handle on, so I’m not here to give anyone a lesson on it. I just do my best to listen to the experiences of gay men and avoid behaviors that fetishize or infantalize them. Maybe if we look at it from the perspective of someone has been directly harmed by the fetishization of gay men, I wonder if it could be a defense mechanism to write it off as a ship as being for straight people?

In the real world, there isn't a lot of solid representation of popular, original content depicting gay men in a positive way. Much of the mlm fanwork out there is made by women, for women. Not all, just a lot. A lot of those women are attracted to men- either straight or bi. You can see how hard it may be for a gay man trying to find content that represents his own, lived experiences when much of it made by women who, consciously or unconsciously, create content that is made for other women who are attracted to men.

So, maybe it's just someone who doesn't like the ship, or feels Korrasami is a superior ship. Or maybe it's coming from a place of valid cynicism from the history of straight women fetishising gay men in online fandom spaces. Lesbians and bisexual women have been harmed by exploitive pornographic content made for and by straight men, so I can fully empathize with gay and bisexual men feeling similarly harmed by fandom content.

For the record, I ship Wuko and Korrasami. I am queer. And I identify as a woman. (Maybe. I might be nonbinary but my questioning my gender is not a topic for my Wuko sideblog 🤣). So lots of people, of all genders and sexualities, ship Wuko. I think the important thing is to enjoy the ship and all the fanworks while paying attention to the way we portray them-are we enjoying them as fully developed characters, with realistic flaws and strengths and interactions? Or are we turning them into caricatures of what we imagine gay and bisexual men to be and exploiting the ship for little more than its sexual appeal?

Thank you for reading as I got way off track from the original topic of your ask! You are queer, and you ship Wuko. Someone else implying that you're not queer enough because you ship a pairing that's allegedly for straight people isn't ok, and your queerness and place in the LGBTQ+ community is valid. Great point from that anon on the lack of substance behind his tweets when you actually look at them. Last week in the Ace interview the host complimented him on being vocal, I believe, on BLM and I was like 🤔🙄🥴 was he? Granted it’s certainly not his time to be the loudest voice but I wasn’t exactly impressed with his activism on literally anything in 2020/ 2021 considering he paints himself as quite the ally. It was like 1 tweet or 1 Instagram story. He also has been silent on Georgia and other voter suppression efforts which seem like slam dunk easy causes to speak up about considering he throws out “everyone get out and vote” anytime he’s backed into a corner on question or with ASP criticism. He can use his platform and his voice however he wants, but for someone who paints himself as and is seen as a politically vocal person he doesn’t actually do all that much. If he truly did care that much about these causes and ASP would prevent that I don’t see why he would even start the website. Put your money into voter registration or vocally support gun-sense or prochoice or progressive candidates. (mental health, death & grief tw) pamela always struggled w her mental health but george ws great n understanding n knew how to help her thru this... nyla didn’t get it too greatly at a very young age bt they knew their mum got “the sads” sometimes (how their dad wld explain tht she needed to lay down in the quiet for a while or why she’d stood at the stove n let the dinner burn until the smoke detector went off without doing anything abt it). when nyla was 14 they got home one day to a police car in the driveway n came prancing in exuberantly as they always did. immediately hugged the legs of an officer bc this is hw they wld greet everyone they ever met. they only realised something was wrong when they let go n saw their mum sat at the table crying. essentially there ws an accident at the construction site george worked at n :/ yeah. 

(jst mental health & grief tw now) this rly had an intense ripple effect on everyone tbh. pamela’s mental health deteriorated quite a lot without george there as her rock n nyla sort of had to step in as best they cld but it was....... hard. some days she ws better bt some days nyla had to sit her in the bath n stroke a wet sponge over her back bc they didn’t know how else to calm her down. nyla always had a very overactive imagination which george encouraged bt it ws like. losing him rly opened a window in nyla’s head n all rationality went floating out of it. their dreams seemed more real than being awake. fantasy wasn’t jst the way they coped bt it was the way they thought n the way they saw. everything on earth was alive. the trees n the clouds n the wall with a brick missing at the bottom of her road n especially their dad. their dad was alive in everything in nyla’s head. the sun shining extra bright in the morning was george. ponds were a veil they could dunk her head under and find george waiting on the other side. reality rly just pulled the plug n said bye tbh n they were ok w that <3

things kind of blew up in their friendship group n they fell out w their best friend raya bc she slept w this guy aj who nyla hd been madly in love w for yrs.... he was a Stinker n honestly so ws their best friend so good riddance i say bt obviously it felt like having their entire world flipped upside dwn fr nyla.... they split after this came out bc they just did Not want to b around these ppl any more n they decided to leave w this guy frm a band they barely knew tht much save fr a one night stand to tour w them..... this ws another whirlwind. jst chock full of them. it ws similar to being on a teacup ride at a carnival n spinning round n round n only knowing u were surrounded by lots of lights. tht’s how they’d best describe their time on tour.

SO in terms of them coming to irving 8 months ago they came w the band.... they honestly did pretty well on tour n wound up renting a big beach house on dorado as a kind of “retreat” sort of place fr them to shack up in while they worked on writing and recording their first big studio album (they gt signed w a label so it’s all vry exciting stuff). nyla among like 3 others were allowed to stay w them too bc they hd a lot of fun on tour. literally jst. taken on as professional groupies essentially. nyla loved it bc they’d never seen the ocean n when they first got there they jst threw off all their clothes n ran straight into the water. it was 3pm on a tuesday afternoon. they got arrested fr public indecency n didn’t get why bc they were like but i just wanted to hug the ocean u silly little oinker? i picture the beach house as like. the loudest one on dorado.... comes alive like a jungle at night..... they r probably bad neighbours. anyway. onto personality puts hand on hip.

PERSONALITY:
