There are many jokes floating around the shadowgast nation about the nature of Caleb and Essek's relationship (eggplants and winky faces abound), and most of them are good natured and perhaps true (eventually or at some point). I find most of them entertaining and sweet, but some of what I have stumbled across post-reunion have highlighted that it's only a joke up to a certain point to me.
Please keep in mind that everything in this post is my opinion and my opinion only. I'm not asking that anyone agree with me. This post is mainly for me because I felt like I needed to make it.
I have seen several comments/posts/tags in many different places talking about Essek and Caleb and that scene in the reunion, and describing it as horny or saying they can't keep their hands off each other or following up that conversation with sexual intimacy. I know a lot of these comments or conversations are not malicious or ill-intentioned, and I understand that people are excited for the first new content in nearly 2 years.
But, one thing I have appreciated about Critical Role is the variety of sexuality and genders represented, including various asexual and aromantic identities. Essek is confirmed by Matt on Twitter to be demi (romantic or sexual is unclear to me so it could be taken as either. If anyone has any other sources I would greatly appreciate them). As someone who identifies as aspec, I deeply appreciate the representation that Critical Role has given me.
The shadowgast scene in the reunion was not sexual to me. It's only been six months since the end of c2, which granted, I have not completed yet. As of this writing, I am in the middle of episode 133. Whatever is going on between Caleb and Essek is still very new, especially for two people who thought they would never have love. An aspect of being demi is that it takes time and closenes and a strong emotional bond for romantic and/or sexual feelings to develop. Six months, to me, feels like an incredibly short time for those feelings to take root for Essek even if he is on the path of developing them.
Seeing people make light of Essek's sexual attraction or feelings for Caleb or treat them as common place or casual, even innocuously, has made me feel as though this aspect of Essek really is ignored or forgotten about sometimes. Not by everyone nor, I would even doubt, the majority. Maybe not intentionally or maliciously or maybe it's a lack of understanding about demisexuality or aspec identities.
This is a feeling I have had for a while, and I mean this about nothing in particular but rather a sum of the parts I have encountered over the months.
In addition, I think Essek's sexuality can be overshadowed by how sexual Caleb can be/is. He makes comments throughout the entirety of the campaign that directly or indirectly reveal his sexuality, and that part is clearly important to him, even if he has not acted on it in a very long time.
I am not saying that Essek is NOT sexually attracted to Caleb or that their relationship does not involve sex at some point or at the time of that scene. I do think, at the very least, that Caleb and Essek would have a conversation about it as some point, and I find it likely it would turn sexual. At the very least, Caleb is attracted to Essek. Liam has confirmed that. I would guess those feelings are a combination of romantic, sexual, platonic, etc.
But I cannot imagine, and again this is my opinion, that feeling sexual attraction or acting on it for the perhaps first or second, maybe third time, is not a life-altering moment for him, let alone acting on it. From what see of his character, he's extrmely gaurded, extremely lonely, extremely shameful. Showing his emotions and attraction to Caleb, or to anyone really, is an extreme show of trust and vulnerability, and I don't think it should be taken lightly.
Treating it, at least in those early months, as though it is common or casual, something taken for granted, feels, to me, as though it undermines the importance and gravity of Essek's feelings, whatever they may be. Further, it undermines aspec identities, relegating them to sidelines if it is even acknowledged at all. I feel as though a lot of the jokes ignore Essek's demisexuality and how integral it is to how he builds relationships and interacts with people.
As someone who is aspec, I find it disheartening to see these sort of jokes and offhand comments being circulated about a character who is confirmed, canon aspec whose identity centers on deep bonds that take time to develop. Applying sexual under/overtones to scene where a small chaste kiss and an innocent pet name are shared feels like, in a way, a forced sexualization of a new, developing relationship that may never turn sexual.
There is such little aspec representation in media, and Critical Role does a fantastic job of showcasing a variety of aspec identities which is so, so rare. To turn around and have the fandom ignore or disregard these identities (intentional or not) that the cast and crew work hard to incorporate feels bad. It makes me feel as though I still have to fight for my identity to be seen and understood by people who, theoretically, support and want to understand and respect various identities, who claim to love Essek and Caleb and their relationship. It hurts.
I have spent a lot of time convincing myself that I and my sexuality belong in the queer community, that I deserve to have a voice, that I deserve to be respected and heard. With my feelings about Essek and his demisexuality, I didn't feel right standing by any longer and remaining silent when these portrayals were bothering me.
I am not asking anyone to change their opinions, to agree with me, to change the fic they write, the art they draw. The Critical Role fandom is beautiful and amazing and absolutely incredible. I have met so many kind, caring, wonderful people since joining. It's an experience unlike any other. But, I needed to make this post for me and anyone else who was feeling like me.

I think Astarion goes from Neutral Evil to Chaotic Neutral in the Spawn ending, but does Ascended Astarion become Lawful or Chaotic Evil? Or does he stay Neutral Evil? 🤔

Okay so im watching witch from mercury and like. Im very much enjoying it. But like, its not actually very good. Like tons of shit happens and just makes no sense. Like, an unignorable amount of stuff makes very little sense.
And also i need people to stop saying its like, legitimately gay. I agree its probably going to end up there, but right now it very much falls in the land of plausible deniability. Suletta and Miroine havent kissed, havent even gone on a date, ans nothing theyve said has been even slightly explicitly romantic.
To be clear i am enjoying it, i just need tumblr to stop acting like its an amazimg, revolutionary, queer anime
(Also i just finished s1, so no s2 spoilers please).

Mordred is a Trans Man
from Mordred’s FGO bio:
Dealing with Mordred is easy. Don't insult King Arthur. Don't praise King Arthur. Don't treat Mordred as a woman. Don't be too obvious about treating Mordred as a man. Don't be too formal. Don't be infatuated with other Servants. Listen to what Mordred says. See? Simple, right?
I’ve bolded the operative words here.  Mordred isn’t offended by being treated as a man, but by being patronized about it.  The point of the entire paragraph is that he’s irritable and wants things exactly the way he likes it.
(As a footnote, any English translation of Japanese that uses 3rd person pronouns is 95% of the time an extrapolation by the translator because for the most part Japanese doesn’t use 3rd person pronouns at all.)
Mordred wearing clothes that show him having boobs doesn’t make him less trans.  A basic part of trans ideology is that when you get down to the nitty gritty there’s no such thing as “male clothes” or “female clothes”.  I’m also a pre-op trans man who sometimes wears clothes that show that I have boobs.  It happens.
And saying “Mordred acts as a man because his father traumatized him” is straight up TЕRF rhetoric.  TЕRFs often say that trans men are just lesbians traumatized by their father or another man.
Being trans isn’t a zero sum game, FGO having other trans characters (particularly trans women and NB people, who aren’t the same thing) doesn’t make Mordred less trans.

I have no clue what's going on but, what I do know is that I hope you feel ok soon.
I’m all right, anon, thank you. There’s been a few things lately that have just… left a sour taste in my mouth. Between that and sorting out some health stuff. Been a weird couple days. But I am ok and will be ok. I have some plans with friends this weekend and some good things coming next week, too. Thank you for checking in and I hope you’re doing ok as well!

I don't mean to talk out of my ass, and am saying nothing about how alcoholism works in the real world, but when it comes to the fictional world of the show I really don't think they ever meant to imply Dean has a dependency issue when it comes to alcohol. I think what the show is actually doing is using short hand for either "Dean is in a bad mental state and self medicating" or, separately and not related to that, is using alcohol as a glamorized "cowboy who can put away his liquor" shorthand. For contrast, I'm watching House right now and (regardless of if it does a good job depicting addiction, which I feel absolutely unqualified to comment on) it does want the audience to understand that House is an addict.
I think the issue is there is a lot of room to bring your own personal experiences with alcohol to interpreting the show, and obviously if those have been bad it's easy to apply that to Dean, who does drink frequently in show. As do Sam, Cas, Bobby, Rufus, Ellen, etc. I don't know why people focus in on Dean specifically, though.
I think the funniest thing about this disk horse (which I consider to be over btw—using this as a springboard for closing thoughts) is that I never said at any point that Dean has never abused alcohol. I didn't even say there's no point in the show at which he can be described as an alcoholic (Dean describes himself as one in 10.12 "About A Boy"). I didn't even say I would never believe that Dean has ever driven drunk ever in his entire life, or that headcanoning that Dean has driven drunk before at some point is somehow some horrible evil thing.
All I did was respond to mail asking me if I remembered times in the actual show where Dean was shown drunk driving, because my anon heard a claim that it is shown to us "All of the time" in the actual show, and didn't remember that, and they were looking for someone with a more recent memory who could corroborate. So I said I don't remember that happening explicitly in the show either, and invited people to provide examples if they remembered an example.
I think if the show wanted to say Dean is a frequent drunk driver— specifically—the show would show me Dean being a drunk driver. It wasn't a problem for the show to quite overtly show me Sam driving drunk in 4.09—it wasn't something they shied away from showing. If (to your point—which you are absolutely right about) alcohol is used as a signal of our characters current mental states (Bobby in 4.01, Sam in 4.09, Cas in 5.17, Dean in 10.22, etc) then there's no reason the show would refuse to simply show me Dean being a frequent drunk driver. I'd be happy to explore it if I thought frequent drunk driving was a genuine facet of Dean's character. I just don't think it is, because the show doesn't show me that. And people can say all day long that "Dean drinks a lot" + "Dean has a car and is often in the drivers seat" = "Dean is a frequent drunk driver" until they're blue in the face. I am still holding out my hand, palm up, waiting for an actual example instead of whiney voices crying and whining insisting it simply HAS to be true because they think it should be.
I think you're right at the end of the day that the show isn't worried about Dean being an alcoholic as much as the show uses upticks in each character's drinking to indicate they're going through something—you're 100% right there. I also understand and respect that some people legitimately—with well-meaning intent—want to explore Dean's relationship to alcohol, because it's absolutely in theme imo and I think there's more attention ultimately put on it with Dean than any other character (though this is not true up to season 4 in my current rewatch). I just can't say I'm sitting here wringing my hands over Dean's relationship with alcohol in the actual canon of the actual show. I'm just not. The fact is, our characters have extremely limited options in terms of coping tools, and have trauma more extensive in breadth and length and diversity than anyone in real life has experienced ever, and are almost perpetually existing in a war zone. The fact that they self-medicate in various ways in order to cope isn't remotely surprising and I don't think there's anything shameful and evil about it either especially given their circumstances and utter lack of options. I just also... don't think Dean is a frequent drunk driver.

I don’t want to invite Discourse so I should not reblog this post about filk music (love filk music!) that repeatedly recommends Leslie Fish (fantastic musician! Terrible person!) to be like uh do y’all not know that she is incredibly incredibly racist and transphobic and she wrote a whole song that she still performs and was recently released on Spotify about how “smoker is the n****r of the world” because she was mad about not being allowed to smoke at cons anymore. Like her music is amazing but she’s a terrible person and also a fair amount of her music reflects some really questionable views
Like that post recommended the song Freedom of the Snow and yes okay musically good song. But also it’s about how the narrator wants to go back to the snowstorm where they had the freedom to kill a “junkie” with an axe. And that is not her only song that’s basically drooling over circumstances where she could commit murder without consequences.
Also, Queen Isabella is really fucking catchy but it positions Columbus “discovering” America as a good thing and Queen Isabella as someone we need more of. Which I just.
Okay I kind of accidentally made the post anyway, but not as a reblog, and I’m turning reblogs off on this because I do NOT want the disk horse.

The Japanese Goddess of the Sun, Sister to Susanno and Tsukuyomi (Her Husband). She is known for being the Ruler of the Heavenly Realm (Takamagahara) and together with her own Brothers they are known as the “Three Precious Children”.
Her name was derived from the word “Amateru” which means “Shining in Heaven”. She was famously known for having her own Descendants such as Ninigi-No-Mikoto. She received the privilege of taking care of the Sun. She even had some maids as together they created beautiful clothing for all of the Gods, even if the Maids would always create new clothing every day to represent each of the Weather’s colors.
She is often represented with a Solar Disk for her Power always helped the Growth of Plantations.
In Japanese Mythology, after when Izanagi failed to bring his Wife/Sister (Izanami) back, he cried in tears which resulted in the creation of Other Mythical Creatures and even the Birth of The Three Precious Children (Amaterasu, Susanno, and Tsukuyomi).
In the Myth of how the Sun and the Moon were always separated together, she was once a consort to one of her Brothers (Tsukuyomi, Japanese God of the Moon) as the Sun and the Moon were always together in the Sky.
Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi were invited to a Banquet by Ukemochi (The Goddess of Food). But considering that Tsukuyomi was so disgusted when Ukemochi revealed how she created food (by puking it out to create food) which caused Tsukuyomi to slice her head off clean.
Amaterasu felt terrified of what her Husband did to Ukemochi which made the Two split up as they were hardly seen together in heaven which is why we always see the Sun and the Moon separate away from each other.
In Another Japanese Myth, Susanno (The Japanese God of the Storm and Seas) decided to visit his Solar Sister and asked her to challenge themselves in a duel of God-Making (Amaterasu created Three Female Deities while Susanno created Five Male Deities).
They both claim to be the Winner, but in the course of their Argument, Susanno throws a temper over his Sister as he throws a Horse into Amaterasu’s weaving hall, which causes one of Amaterasu’s attendants to drop dead. She moved into the Cave which made the Sun to be no longer in the Sky thanks to her Trickery Storm Brother.
Without the Sun, the Plants and the Crops wouldn’t grow and even Demons from Yomi (The Underworld) would start to appear on Earth. So the Gods decided to figure out many plans to convince Amaterasu to leave out her own Cave.
However, all of those plans to make Amaterasu leave the cave failed because none of the Gods’ ideas didn’t work (First was the Chickens and the Second was the Mirror).
A Final Plan was left when the Gods convinced Amenouzume (The Goddess of Fun, Partying, and the Dawn) to lure Amaterasu out with a Strip Tease. To lure the Solar Goddess out of the Cave, Amenouzume was naked as she danced around waiting for Amaterasu to come out of the cave as she came to see what was going on.
The Gods immediately closed the Cave so that Amaterasu wouldn’t vanish anymore as the Sun was now back in the Sky during the Daytime again. Susanno was banished for causing the whole mess as he left to the Mortal Realm for awhile until when he found a sword (the Kusanagi No Tsurugi), she gifts it to her Sister as an Apology as her own Sword that her Brother gave went pass down from generation to generation by Amaterasu’s descendants.
SBSP Universe
Amaterasu is The Japanese Goddess of the Sun and even the Sister of Susanno and Kagutsuchi. She is also the Daughter of Lady Izanami and Lord Izanagi as well as the Ex-Wife of Tsukuyomi.
She is a Wise, Kind, Noble, and Devoted Goddess as she is the Main Ruler of Takamagahara (The Heaven Place of All Shinto Deities), her Brother (Susanno) is the Second Ruler considering he also rules the Skies like her Sister as a Sky Emperor. Although despite her Brother’s trickery that she often doesn’t like, she still loves him very much. She often takes responsibility and passion over her duties of taking control of the Sun.
She doesn’t often mind their Younger Brother (Kagutsuchi) despite his fire havoc flaws.
After when her Mother (Izanami) gave birth to their Younger Sibling (Kagutsuchi), she felt sad that their Parents went through a divorce as life was sure rough at first dealing with their own Parents’ divorce when Izanami became the Current Lady of Yomi (The Japanese Underworld). But when Amaterasu grew, she became the Ruler of Kagutsuchi as an Honor for their Father.
She was once married to the Japanese Moon God (Tsukuyomi) after they eventually fell in love they decided to get married. However, their Love was sadly short-lived when Ukemochi (The Goddess of Love) tended a feast over at her own place with the Other Japanese Gods including the Solar and Lunar lovebird deities.
One Night, when Tsukuyomi saw that Ukemochi was preparing the Food by puking it all up to create her own perfect recipes, Tsukuyomi was instantly disgusted by the way that Ukemochi created her own food through her Mouth so he decided to burn all of her hard work in making the food which instantly ruined the Whole Banquet that the Gods were having which heartbroken Poor Ukemochi.
Amaterasu felt sorry for what Ukemochi tried to do on her best work on making the Food as She and her Husband have a fight which lead to a huge break-up as Amaterasu never wanted to hear from Tsukuyomi ever again after what he did for running the Whole Banquet (causing the Sun and Moon to split up).
One Day, Susanno wanted to ask his Sister up for a Clever Challenge in which they can create their own Art and bring it to life. Susanno drew a Dragon while Amaterasu drew a Kirin as they both claimed themselves to be the Winner which led into a pointless argument to see which one of the Siblings won first. Susanno instantly threw a temper over his Sister as he threw at a fight of Rage by his own Thunderstorms which zaps one of the Places in the Mortal Realm.
Having enough of her Brother’s Temper, Amaterasu decides to stay in a Cave for awhile until Susanno controls his temper and calms himself after the incident that he did.
But as Amaterasu hid in the cave, it caused the Sun to disappear which made all of the Crops and Plants lose their growth causing the People to starve and want to have more sunlight so the Gods figure out a plan to convince Amaterasu to get out of the Cave. They first let out Chickens so she could hear their clucking to make the Sun appear but it didn’t Work. They then try out a Mirror to make her out of the Cave so that she’d see her reflection but that didn’t work as well.
All of the Gods have tried to bring their Ruler back just so that she can continue her duties of taking care of the Sun again so that it may shine on Earth. One of the Gods asked Amenouzume to lure Amaterasu out of her Cave by singing a Silly Song while dancing just so that Amaterasu can hear the call. When Amenouzume does that, it wakes Amaterasu up as she sees all the commotion outside of the Cave which surprises her as she apologizes to her People for abandoning her own duties and continues her own Job as the Sun Goddess again as she brings the Sun back to Earth.
Susanno on the Other Hand was punished for all the trouble he caused as he wandered in the Mortal Realm for a while and even gave Amaterasu her own Sword as an Apology. For that own Sword of hers (The Kusanagi) which passed on from Generation to Generation until when the Modern Times hit.
She does happen to like Neptune because of how he takes good care of the sea but she’s very neutral towards Poseidon (due to his own Vanity). She would certainly like Sandy because of her Intelligence and Strength but she also would like SpongeBob because of his own Great Kindness despite his own flaws.
